Cut 12 sky triangles from background
20 geese triangles from background
4- sky triangles and 24 geese triangles from print
Sew a sky background to a print geese as shown
Next sew a background geese to the previous unit as shown.
Continue with this process unit you have 4 strip with 6 print geese, 5 background geese and finish off with a sky background. Also make 4- half square triangles with remaining sky pieces.
Sew a geese strip to each side of your center. To the two remaining geese strips sew a half square triangle to each end as shown.
Sew these to the top and bottom of your center. Cut 3 width of fabric 1 1/2" strips of background. Sew these end to end. Sub cut into 2- 28 1/2" strips and 2- 30 1/2" strips. Sew the 28 1/2" strips to the sides of your center. Sew the 30 1/2" strips to the top and bottom. Now your ready for next month. Your center should measure 30 1/2" squares.

On Tuesday February 5th, my daughter Rachel Anne Williams Bennett gave birth to a healthy baby boy. His name is Cova New Bennett and he weighted 8lb and 1 oz and was 20 inches in length. He is the prettiest baby you have ever seen!
Rachel is married to Joshua Bennett and they live in New Orleans and have lived there about five years, moving to New Orleans shortly after they got married. Cova was born at 10AM on Tuesday. I flew down and was there by about 5PM and got to hold my new grandson. I spend the night and visited the hospital again the next day and flew back to Nashville Wednesday evening. Due to my wife being an invalid and needing constant and total care, it can be difficult to get away. I appreciate Louella's care giver, Sue Deuss, for working around the clock so I could make the trip. I am so glad I did not miss this glorious event. I hope I get to return often to see him as he grows, even if my stays are short.
Rachel is my only child and I was beginning to think I was not going to be a grandfather. I am so happy!

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With two starters out and another not feeling well, and each team favored in five bouts apiece, something had to give somewhere.
Penn State didn't waste any time waiting to see how it would all unfold, as Roman Bravo-Young and Nick Lee scored back-to-back, match-opening upset victories which sparked the No. 1 Nittany Lions to an easier-than-expected 28-9 victory over No. 6 Ohio State Friday night before nearly 13,276 fans in St. John Arena.
If ever a team proved it was No. 1 and virtually unbeatable, the Lions were it. In each of their seven bouts pitting ranked wrestler against ranked wrestler, including two ranked higher, Penn State was the winner.
"We believe in our guys, obviously, but, yeah, they wrestled a great match," Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said outside the locker room after Penn State's 56th straight dual meet victory. "We've got a lot of matches left. This was a great atmosphere but we're happy with the way our guys came in and wrestled today," for sure.
Ohio State coach Tom Ryan was pretty stunned and said Penn State's first two wins took energy out of the Buckeye team. "No, I didn't envision it going this way, I thought we were ready to win,'' he said. "We thought we were. What we thought and what happened tonight were tragically different. I did not think that this would happen.''
MEN OF THE MATCH: Pretty much everyone but Bravo-Young and Lee were the obvious heroes. Bravo-Young's apparent strategy was to make No. 6 Luke Pletcher shoot, which Pletcher did just once. And he almost made it count in the opening overtime period when he put Bravo-Young high in the air but was unable to stop an extremely athletic shoulder roll to freedom by Bravo-Young.
Bravo-Young escaped in six seconds and then had to ride out Pletcher to win. Pletcher's known for his mat wrestling but Bravo-Young rode for the first eight seconds before going out of bounds. He then took a stalling warning by hanging on Pletcher's legs which stopped the clock with eight seconds left. He completed the ride for the win but too enthusiastically slammed his headgear to the mat and caused Penn State to lose a team point.
"He has a lot of talent and he works hard and he's been grinding every day trying to get better and it's starting to pay off for him," Penn State's Jason Nolf said about Bravo-Young.
Sanderson thought Bravo-Young was playing things a little cautious because of his knee injury. "But he can win close matches, he's a tough kid. Great competition tonight and we're happy with our guys' effort,'' Sanderson said about Bravo-Young and the team in general.
Lee trailed 5-2 after two periods against No. 2 Joey McKenna but escaped in the third and took down McKenna just four seconds later. Sensing McKenna, now 14-1, was tiring, Lee cut him free and maintained pressure on McKenna's legs, scooting around off an initial single-leg shot for the winning takedown with 33 seconds left and completing the ride for a 7-6 win.
"I think everyone was yelling on our bench to cut him; he needed to get another takedown," Sanderson said.
TURNING POINT: Bo Nickal's fall wasn't the turning point, it was the exclamation point. He fended off two semi-decent shots from No. 2 Kollin Moore before striking with a single-leg and immediately slapping on a tight overhead cradle and ultimately adjusting his own position to flatten Moore.
"Bo always expects to pin his guys which is a great mentality," Nolf said. "He went out and did what he wanted to do and that's Bo."
Sanderson agreed. "He was ready to go,'' Sanderson said about Nickal. "Bo's a big-match guy and all of our guys...this was a big match for them and they wanted to wrestle well and they did.''
Not surprisingly, as coaches do for their own team, Ohio State's Ryan saw things a bit differently. "That's guy's a pinner," Ryan said about Nickal. "One of the top pinners that program's ever had. "Would I sound silly to say that Kollin Moore can win that match four or five or six weeks from now? I don't think that's silly at all. He got caught and we just have to learn from it and move on.''
BIGGEST SURPRISE: That the Buckeyes not only lost the first two but that Ohio State's Joey McKenna gassed in the third period. He was returning from injury and Ryan said McKenna was a little heavy and his weight cut was bigger than he wanted it to be. "When you wrestle somebody and even though it seems seven minutes isn't that long...when you wrestle somebody who makes you fight for every morsel, you can break down. And you saw Joey as the match went on, he broke down,'' Ryan said.
WHAT WE LEARNED: Name the last team you've seen that can deliver in the clutch better than this Penn State squad. Even Ryan heaped praise on the Lions. "This is one of the great teams,'' Ryan said about the Lions. "I've been in sports for a long time and they have four guys on that team ... they're four of the best college wrestlers that I've seen in the last 25 years. Credit to them. Nolf. Nickal. Vincenzo. Mark Hall. These are all guys who are really at an elite level. This is a really good team (Ohio State) and that (Penn State) was a special team.''

Los Angeles, Feb 10 (IANS) Actress Gillian Anderson says ageing is something one needs to find a way to embrace.
Anderson told Vogue: "If you watch yourself on film, there is a certain point where you see yourself change. It's arresting. It can either be completely traumatic or something that instigates a shift of consciousness towards thinking about what's important.
"But you have to go through that trauma first, to mourn."
The 50-year-old star has grown to accept that she cannot do anything to halt getting older so is celebrating the changes instead, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

For the first time on a large scale, Americans are debating whether to allow the existence of billionaires.
The ensuing arguments about his piece were about what you'd expect: ad hominem attacks and the pitting of capitalism against socialism. A Fox News panel called Manjoo "an idiot" and dismissed the critique of inequality as an attack on capitalism. Readers raised examples of "good billionaires."
Democrats have been arguing for years now about the value of socialism, but as Ocasio-Cortez's policy adviser Dan Riffle — known for his Twitter handle "Every Billionaire is a Policy Failure" — alluded to in a tweet, even if AOC, Sen. Bernie Sanders, or Warren are too radical for you, just look at what Trump-appointed Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell is saying.
"We want prosperity to be widely shared. We need policies to make that happen," Powell said on Wednesday, according to the Washington Post. "The U.S. lags now in mobility. And that's not our self-image as a country, nor is it where we want to be. ... We have some work to do to make sure that the prosperity we do achieve is widely spread."
Regardless of an ideological lens, there's a growing consensus: The United States needs a course correction, and decreasing inequality is crucial.
The rich are clearly getting richer
The French economist Thomas Piketty wrote that, "the incomes of the top 1% collectively made up 11% of national income in 1980, but now constitute above 20% of national income, while the 20% of US national income that was attributable to the bottom 50% in 1980 has fallen to just 12% today."
Additionally, he wrote, "while average pre-tax income for the bottom 50% has stagnated at around $16,000 since 1980, the top 1% has experienced 300% growth in their incomes to approximately $1,340,000 in 2014. This has increased the average earnings differential between the top 1% and the bottom 50% from 27 times in 1980 to 81 times today."
It's not wild, then, to call the moment we're in America's "second Gilded Age," referring to the post-Civil War era of robber barons and industry, where the wealthy kept living better and the poor kept getting worse.
Occupy Wall Street remained relatively small in the wake of the financial crisis, but it did make income and wealth inequality, the language of the 99% and the 1%, a prime topic of discussion. Populist sentiment increased throughout the country, and Vermont's democratic-socialist senator and New York's celebrity real estate billionaire did better in the 2016 election than anyone predicted. The latter, Donald Trump, became president and right-wing rhetoric won, but it also brought with it standard conservative policies, like tax cuts for the rich.
'Abolishing billionaires' isn't as radical as it seems
In his article in the Times and during a followup on Twitter, Manjoo proved to be less into the notion of going so far as to virtually capping how much money Americans could make — not even Ocasio-Cortez has advocated for that —but he is in support of significantly higher taxes on the rich. And you don't have to be a radical for that. There have been many polls that show the majority of Americans at this point are in favor of the same thing.
While "abolish billionaires" is an eye-catching phrase with radical implications, raising taxes to pre-1980s levels is certainly not radical, said Stephanie Sterling, vice president of advocacy and and policy at the Roosevelt Institute.
Sterling told Business Insider that questioning the role of billionaires in our society "is an important contribution to the debate," because it's focusing on structural changes that need to take place, to keep extreme wealth from harming the economy.
What the country needs, she said, is "robust antitrust policy, meaningful limits on stock buybacks, much higher tax rates, and the meaningful restoration of the ability to form and join unions." If getting riled up about billionaires leads voters to elect officials who support those policies, that will successfully correct for what she considers to be the mistakes of the past 40 years.
"I think we're all passengers in a billionaire hijacking," author and critic Anand Giridharadas told Business Insider about how the US got to a boiling point. "We were all drugged on the plane, and these guys are now terrified in the cockpit because they're realizing that in the back there we just woke up."
The billionaires themselves are taking sides
Potential presidential candidates and fellow billionaires Howard Schultz and Michael Bloomberg are not fans of Ocasio-Cortez's call for a 70% tax rate for income above $10 million or Warren's call for a 3% wealth tax for fortunes above $1 billion, and have used phrases like "un-American" and referred to chaos in Venezuela as proof of where these policies would lead.
Investor and progressive activist Nick Hanauer, however, saw this coming. Hanauer, whose fortune must approach $1 billion considering he signed Warren Buffett and Bill Gates' Giving Pledge, famously wrote in Politico a few years ago that "the pitchforks are coming."
He told Business Insider that he's been seriously considering the notion that every billionaire is a policy failure, saying "there can be no doubt that the thrust of the argument is correct — that in a country where so many people are barely getting by, or not getting by at all, an economy that mints billionaires is structurally deficient. There is no reasonable moral or practical justification for these disparities in wealth and income."
Hanauer noted that even with significantly higher taxes, America's wealthiest would remain on top, and their buying power would remain relative.
"I also feel strongly that the Neoliberal contention that me getting immensely wealthy does not harm you, and that your objection to it is just petty jealousy is also wrong," he said. "The richer the rich get, the farther apart the rungs of opportunity are stretched. An economy dominated by a few people with infinite wealth is characterized by arms races for status that benefit no one and harm most people."

Gossips took a little hiatus from sharing the articles from Margaret Schram's series Columbia County's Sleeping Dragon. Now it's time to resume. Readers will remember that the articles, which appeared in The Independent in the summer and fall of 1988, explored the properties of Lake Albany clay and the problems--historic and potential--created by the clay. My motivation for sharing Schram's research is to make people aware of the problems in the hope that Lake Albany clay, which is a geological factor in Hudson and throughout Columbia County, can be a consideration when proposals for new construction and changes to existing structures come before Hudson's regulatory boards. The following article, which is the eighth in the series, was published in The Independent on August 25, 1988.
The Collapse of the Claverack Bridge, February 27, 1918
Adjoining the area of the Knickerbocker Plant disaster, the "Claverack Bridge" crossed the Claverack Creek on what was known as "the Claverack state highway," now Route 23B. The first bridge built over that section of the creek was in the early 1800s, when the Columbia Turnpike was constructed from Hudson to Hillsdale. Prior to that, the route to Claverack was over "Keeler's bridge" off Spook Rock Road (Route 29) and into Claverack by Webb Road. The meadow just west of the creek was frequently flooded, so double bridges were built: one over the creek connected to another over the hollow. For nearly 100 years, until the state took over the highway, two wooden bridges spanned the creek and field.
When the state constructed the concrete structure just about eight years before this event, they built a 240-foot cement slab bridge over the creek and the hollow. It consisted of eight 30-foot spans, and the bridge was supported by piles 65 feet long, driven into the creek. Heavy abutments supported each end.
Might Be Trouble
At the time it was built, "one or two local contractors had pointed out that there might be trouble later on."
Snowfall had been unusually heavy during the winter months of 1918, and a late February thaw sent the Claverack Creek over the banks, filling the hollow next to the bridge with high, swirling waters. The evening of February 27, a heavily loaded truck passed over the bridge and noticed nothing out of the ordinary. Three Hudson residents were returning to Hudson from Claverack shortly before 9 p.m. on that same evening driving "along at a rapid rate in a high powered runabout," when they started over the bridge.
Yawning Chasm
They discovered that the center of the bridge was a "yawning chasm," with two sides holding together at the bottom, each slab at a 45 degree angle.
On the Hudson side, the massive concrete structure had pulled away from the abutment, leaving an opening of over seven feet directly over the surging waters. The driver accelerated and sped down the first incline, flew over the gaping crack and up the inclined western slab. The car was going so fast that when it cleared the top of the tilted slab on the Hudson side, it was suspended momentarily in the air, and then plunged to the ground. The force of the crash catapulted the occupants some 10 to 20 feet. The three escaped serious injury, but the car was totally wrecked.
Two Spans Sank
The bridge section on the western side continued to sink at a rate of six inches an hour. During the next day, it continued to slump until the two spans sank beneath the waters. The abutments on each side were holding, but only the reinforcing steel cables held the sunken spans, estimated to weight 1,000 tons. The bridge was closed to all traffic.
On March 4, a committee from the Towns of Claverack and Greenport met to solve the problem of the bridge. If they waited for the state to repair the damage, it would require official approval and 30 days bidding time, with no bridge in place before summer.
The following day, the combined group drafted a resolution. (This is courtesy of the Town of Greenport minutes of 1918. I have taken the liberty of abridging, especially removing innumerable uses of "whereas" and "the said.") "The gap must be filled by commissioners of both Towns with consent of both Towns--To make a fill by both Towns is legal and both Towns take the responsibility of paying half."
Towns Rebuild
The resolution read: "The Towns of Claverack and Greenport are now jointly liable to make and maintain a bridge across the Claverack Creek. On the 27th day of February 1918 the western portion of the bridge from the extremely westerly abutment, extending to the second abutment easterly had collapsed and fallen down by means of a freshet or otherwise, and it is therefore wholly destroyed and impassable."
The resolution went on to describe the inspections and "also the question of converting the space spanned by the fallen portion into a solid approach. . . . Resolved that to meet the emergency it is not expedient to build the fallen portion as a bridge--but to extend the westerly approach to meet the portion still intact."
The solid fill over the hollow (and the sunken bridge) was to be 34 feet wide, 12 feet deep, and 54 feet long. The roadway was to be of stone and cinders and level from the existing road to the bridge span over the creek.
$944 Cost
An expenditure of $800 was approved by both boards, but the bid came to $944, which included guardrails on each side of the new section. That amount was authorized. The work was done as soon as the flood waters receded, with plans for a more permanent roadway "when the frost has left the ground."
On March 22, 1918, the new road was opened to traffic. "Users are cautioned to proceed slowly over the bridge. . . . The Towns, however, assume no liability pending the completion of the repair and legal opening of the closed highway."
The next time you drive over that bridge remember that, for a least 50 feet beyond the western edge, there once was another bridge, and that its remains most likely lie deep under today's highway.
Quicksand Blamed
Again residents blamed quicksand for the collapse, but it was Lake Albany clay up to its usual tricks. Geologists reported that the stratified gravel near the surface slipped on the saturated clay beneath. The weight of the bridge, combined with the pressure of the flood waters against the piers, caused the piers to slip and fail; the two spans of the bridge were carried down. There was little or no damage to the concrete slabs themselves; the problems originated in unstable foundation of the bridge.
Today's Questions
My questions today are: Has the bridge and the surrounding area been stabilized so that an event such as this cannot recur?
Between August 1953 and May 1954, New York State "completely rebuilt the "Claverack Bridge." It was widened from a narrow two-lane structure to the present width. A great deal of time was spent in sinking adequate pilings to hold the weight of the bridge.

The bridge on Route 23B was most recently repaired in the summer of 2013, when the bridge deck was replaced with concrete, the steel beneath the bridge was repaired, and new railings were installed. In my search to confirm the nature of the repairs made in 2013, I stumbled upon this picture on the Town of Claverack website, which shows the bridge in September 1938, after it had been washed away during a hurricane.

It appears it will be played at Black Wolf Run and Whisting Straits...two amazing courses by most golfers standards. Did anyone else register that is a FJA? Hope to see lots of you there again in 2019!
I won't be able to make it this year, either, Chris. The 28th will be our 53rd anniversary and I've missed too many over the years to add another one at this point. We did discuss the idea of her accompanying me, but decided that just does not work. I would want to spend my time visiting with you and the others I've met over the years, leaving her on the outside looking in. Maybe next year. Have a great time and post lots of pictures.

During Friday's edition of Tucker Carlson Tonight, the eponymous host discussed some of the provisions of the Green New Deal, including the idea that the Federal government will pay anyone who is "unwilling to work." I answered that first part earlier. There are many misconceptions/errors in those statements above. Our only request apart from being on the deed is a spacious private apt with separate entrance. As both our son and DIL will continue to work it only makes sense that we would be there to help with grandchildren as would her parents that live nearby. Taking care of us as we get old does not preclude the need for nursing home car of course. I eventually had to put my mom in one after she lived with us for quite a while. We are not parasites....lol. As far as the use of the space when we are not there we clarified that our bedroom/ computer area is off limits. Vanguard shows an option to "Convert to Roth IRA" and requires filing 8606, but honestly not sure how to handle that.
You convert it now, then you deal with the paperwork.
When you do your 2018 taxes you add Form 8606 Part I to document the non-deductible contribution and add a statement explaining the recharacterization.
When you do your 2019 taxes you report the conversion on Form 8606 Part II.
If you don't convert all of your TIRAs, you need to fill out Pt I also.

I think at a high level what you have is very reasonable even if it might not be what I would use if I was setting up a portfolio from scratch.
If this is in a taxable account there would likely be some capital gains to pay if you tried to move the money around to make some small improvement in the mutual fund selections. That likely would not be worthwhile so leaving it the way that it is would be pretty reasonable if this is in a taxable account.
If it is all in retirement accounts where taxes are not an issue then using the Vanguard Target Retirement Income fund would be a reasonable choice too.
There is a lot that we do not know about your situation like your tax bracket, if you have have a pension or a lot of home equity, or if these investments are in a taxable account or a retirement account. That makes it pretty hard to give you suggestions on how your might fine tune your investments.
The main thing I would be concerned about is that with four mutual funds it may be difficult to manage ten years from now when you are 93 and may not be as financially capable as you are now. When you start spending the money you might want to first sell off all of the two bond funds when you need money. Once those are sold off you would only have the Wellesly and the money market account which would be easier to manage.
I will request a RESPA. Best way is to see for each payment what is being applied to what.

Now if you made an extra payment each year of $907.33, that would go to the principal and after 60 months it would be $4536.65 paid to the principal so one would owe $162,949.07 and have paid $37,485.75 in interest and $21,490.93 to the principal.
If we look at a $184,440.00 loan at 4.25% for 22 years, after 5 years/60 months paying $1,076.57 a month, one would owe $156,194.21
and have paid $36,348.40 in interest and $28,245.79 to the principal.
The difference between $1076.57 a month and $907.33 is $169.24
$169.24*12 = $2030.88 So are we really talking about an extra payment of $2030.88 a year? I'm not seeing how an extra payment each year of $907.33 is essentially changing a 30 year loan into a 22 year loan.
On $184,440 at 4.25% for 30 years, you are paying $142,200.22 in interest. If you add an extra $907.33 per year as an extra payment, you pay
$119,929.04 in interest.
$907.33 / 12 = $75.61
$75.61+ $907.33 = $982.94
If you pay $982.94 a month for 30 years you are paying $119,253.57 in interest. It's actually better to pay the $982.94 a month than the $907.33 a month with a once per year additional payment of $907.33 You save $675.47 on interest after 30 years.
A 22 year loan at 4.25% is $99,774.43 in interest and you are paying $1076.57 a month instead of $907.33, so again, I'm not seeing how one equates a 30 year loan to a 22 year loan simply with an extra monthly payment each year. The total interest paid doesn't match up and the difference in monthly payments each month doesn't add up.
An even $100k would be nice but it seems like it's best to do this in Roth IRA than a taxable account or Rollover IRA. I wouldn't want to do this in a Rollover IRA right?

Flying SPIRIT airlines. Departing flight was delayed 4 hours. Didn't think it could get worse until we flew home and that flight was delayed 12 hours. Wish I had just flown the big carrier that the rest of the extended family took.

It appeared that when the mechanics gave the wing exit seat more room, they simply moved that row backwards toward, you guessed it, my seat. In other words, the row of seats behind the exit row had decidedly less room than the other seats in the plane (which weren't very big to start with). Worse, the person in the exit seat figured out how to recline their seat which is not supposed to be possible on Spirit. My nose was about 2" from the seat back for a flight from D.C. to Seattle. I could not even reach down to get my reading material from under the seat in front of me.
Later, my wife ran out of the water she brought from the airport. I thought we could afford it after saving so much money on the flight, so I paid $3 for a bottle of water for her. When she found out she was furious at my waste of money. She made me return it, which was a bit awkward. But the nice thing about Spirit is that the flight attendants are sort of in on the misery the airline inflicts and grin and bear it. Living comfortably in retirement is not my goal. My goal encompasses the entirety of what retirement can mean in terms of the potential for my life. So I have intentionally made my "Wildly Important Idea" (per Cal Newport) to make retirement the most financially, materially, emotionally, and psychologically fulfilling time of life. I have most recently dubbed this project as "High Performance Aging" as I intend to take it into the end of my life.
I will never succeed in this project if I am only obsessed with the very narrow fields of investing, personal finance, and microeconomics. Complex adaptive systems such as human beings usually fail when focusing too narrowly. Liability matching has freed me to be unconcerned with these areas in order to place my attention on much more important aspects of living.
To each their own.I would say on this topic most people would put financial freedom first because having enough money enables you to do what you want, eliminates the stress of worrying about money and creates freedom.When you have enough of it there’s no reason to be obsessed or narrowly focused on it.

Either way, you might want to shift your TIAA holdings to TIAA traditional serve as a bond substitute rather than Vanguard bond funds. Move the Vanguard bond funds to equity funds to just Vanguard TSM and Total Intl stocks.
You would need to decide if you want TREA as a diversifier in your portfolio. But in a nutshell, move out of TIAA equities and into traditional. Use Vanguard equities as much as possible in your AA.
With the combination of 403b options and 457b options I thought you might be in academia.
You are single which would leave me inclined to use a tax deferred 457b for at least some of your income, especially income above the 12% tax bracket. After that contribute to a Roth403b if possible.
By the way, it is best to hold your bond allocation in tax deferred and your stock allocation in Roth to the extent possible. If you have good low cost options that is a better approach than using Target Retirement funds in each.

- Tax time 2018, find our 2017 AGI was ~$187K, so a little bit into the Roth IRA phase-out window for MFJ.
- Mar 2018 I work with Vanguard. They calculate the excess plus earnings, and that total, minus a little bit of taxes withheld, is withdrawn. Total's around $1K for each of us. No recharacterization or conversion (existing tIRAs), just straight removed the excess plus earnings. Vanguard says nothing else to do for now, you'll get a 1099-R in early 2019.

- Tax software says "This distribution was taxable in 2017, not 2018" and you'll need to amend your 2017 return.

Yes, the earnings returned with your excess removal is taxable for the year IN WHICH you made the contribution, which was 2017. As such the 1099R you received would be coded P in Box 7, and probably code J as well if you are under 59.5. Therefore, the Box 2a amount is taxable in 2017 and unless you qualify for a penalty waiver you owe a 10% penalty on the amount in Box 2a.
To report this, you would need to file a 1040X (amended return) for 2017, adding the taxable income and paying the penalty, if applicable. On the other hand, since this applies to 2017, you would NOT report any of this with your 2018 return.
You might also find that the Box 2a amount if large enough, when added to your 2017 AGI FURTHER reduces your allowed Roth contribution for 2017, and leaves you with a small 6% excise tax for 2017. Vanguard probably did not explain this, and while they did not have the amount of earnings returned at the time, they might have mentioned this "chicken and egg" scenario. Again, the further reduction depends on the amount of earnings and the rounding rules that determine the allowed regular Roth contribution. If you owe any 6% excise tax, then you will need a Form 5329 with the 1040X to document the amount of excess. This is not costly, but is definitely a reporting hassle.
You can eliminate the hassle of the MAGI phaseout range by doing a back door Roth if you do not have a non Roth IRA balance. That avoids any excess contributions due to income phaseout.

The 1099Rs are indeed coded PJ in box 7. I have filled out a 1040x amended return for 2017. I have $138 earnings to add to my 2017 AGI, which increased my tax liability a whopping $38. This seems straightforward so far, like I could just mail this plus a check, until we get to the tax penalties you mention. I'm reading pub 590.

Since I withdrew contributions+interest back in March 2018 before the tax filing deadline, I read the above "treated as an amount not contributed" as indicating there wouldn't be a penalty on it. No?
I see what you're saying with the chicken-and-egg thing with reduced Roth contribution limits. By my math, the extra $138 income just re-lowered each of our Roth IRA contribution limits for 2017, from $4570 to $4490. Looks like Vanguard removed enough, after accounting for the earnings, to put our 2017 contributions at $4565, so it would appear as though we're now sitting on an overcontribution of $75 each, after re-calculating everything. Can I just pay 6% on this in Part IV of a 5329 and be done? Sure hope I don't have to go back to Vanguard and re-do this whole process over such a small amount of $.
I have zero concerns with paying 10% or 6% or anything on the small amounts involved here, just want to do everything right, and as clean as possible. If the answer is "just to be safe, i'd file a 5329 and pay 10% on all Box 2 earnings in plus 6% in Part IV" and be done with it, that's fine. If the answer is go back to Vanguard and re-do this for $75, well I don't like that answer but if it's gotta happen...
PS - We have tIRAs that impede Roth conversions. That sure would have been nice, to avoid all this.
You're in great shape to buy at the range you listed. I might recommend to put down only 20% and retain the rest to beef up the emergency fund. Although the silver essentially gives you the same comfort.
Most large firms have been trying to determine customer lifetime value, the net present value of a specific customer to a firm, for at least a decade now. It actually makes great business sense. You should go more out of your way to help a customer that's worth $10k to you than one that's worth $10, and the difference can easily be that great.
On a related note, a study done about 15 years ago showed that many customers who remain with a firm for long periods of time are actually not profitable at all. Hence, customer "loyalty" isn't all that it's cracked up to be, and tracking customers' value can be highly useful, as many firms have now discovered.
That being said, firms still have an ethical obligation to treat all of their customers well.
Thanks, good to know. I never really understood the point of “amount billed”. I thought the institution was being pro-active in switching reporting methods but I see now that they had to.
There was a lot of fraud going on with the Education Credits. It was easier for colleges just to show amount billed in Box 2 of the 1098-T and there was not a requirement to report the amount paid in Box 1. As you could imagine taxpayers were claiming they paid the amount billed, minus scholarship/grants reported in Box 5, with their funds/student loans to maximize the education credit. Several years ago the IRS came out with the requirement that the colleges had to show the amount paid during that tax year in Box1. That requirement kept getting pushed back until 2018, where now they have to show the actual amount paid for QUALIFIED EDUCATION EXPENSES, “qualified” meaning payments received during year that qualify for an education credit like American Opportunity Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit.

FRIENDS! The Musical Parody at the City Theatre, running now through February 10th, is a fast-paced parody comedy that will leave you laughing throughout the entire performance. Based on the popular 90's sitcom, the parody show is as much nostalgic as it is wacky.
This fast-moving musical takes on the daunting task of tackling all ten seasons of the show within a two-hour performance. While the characters of Ross, Rachel, Joey, Chandler, Monica, and Phoebe are the focus of the show, many other featured characters make appearances in the show. Of these include Janice, Gunther, and Richard. The script of the show is perfectly written to play on the oddities, mannerisms, and weird traits that each of the characters from the sitcom have. The musical pokes a lot of fun at these traits and mannerisms through original songs written for the parody show. Of these include "How You Doin?", "The Chick and The Duck Song", and "We Were on a Break!".
The show moves incredibly fast but does not miss a beat in terms of touching on all of the major events that happen in the sitcom. The show begins with Rachel entering Central Perk in her wedding dress right after she left her husband at the altar, which is exactly the way we meet Rachel Green in the sitcom. The costume design of the show is exceptional. Each of the characters are dressed very close to how they are in the sitcom.
Though the songs written for the musical are funny and poke fun at the characters, one of the final songs in the second act touches on the engagement of Chandler and Monica, happening near the end of the seasons in the sitcom. "Could I BE Anymore...in Love with You" is a heartfelt ballad in which Chandler professes his love for Monica. In a show with mostly comedic songs, this song succeeds in delivering a true and heartfelt message.
All of the cast members have a great onstage chemistry that helps keep the audience engaged during the entire performance. In addition to chemistry onstage, the cast plays out the comedic timing of the show exceptionally well.
Sami Griffith, playing Rachel Green, truly mastered Rachel's voice and mannerisms from the sitcom. From the moment she steps onstage she is believable. The onstage chemistry between Griffith and Tyler Fromson, playing Ross Geller, really shines through in the second act.
Another standout in the show is Aaron C. Rutherford as Chandler Bing. In addition to playing Chandler, he also plays several other characters throughout the show. Along with Chandler, Rutherford shines when playing Janice, Chandler's girlfriend. Rutherford sings "Oh. My. God. It's Janice!" with a hefty amount of energy and poise.
Fans of Friends will find this parody musical hilariously unique, as well as nostalgic. The musical does a great job of poking fun at the characters that we have all fallen in love with. Whether you have watched Friends ten different times or have jut finished the series for the first time, you will be laughing out loud throughout the entire show.

A one-woman play titled AGLIO E OLIO will be staged in the Bakers' kitchen Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 14-17. In the play, the narrator tells the story of her father's final days while preparing the food that was an integral part of her upbringing in an Italian family.
The semi-autobiographical play was first developed by actress Meg Persichetti and film director Laura Gilkey, who is an Adrian native now living in New Jersey. In the Croswell's production, the character originated by Persichetti is played by Maria Portaro-Mohler of Lambertville. The play is directed by John MacNaughton.
"It's an intimate remembering of the events surrounding her father's passing," MacNaughton said.
The play aims to create a sense of community among the people who attend by having them sample the dishes prepared by the narrator at the end of the show.
"Food brings people together," Portaro-Mohler said. "Even if you have nothing in common, you now have something in common because you're sharing this meal."
Because the play ties the narrator's childhood memories together with the story of her father's death, Portaro-Mohler said she hopes the play pushes viewers to remember the good times they had with people they have lost in their own lives.
Setting the play in a kitchen is a reminder, MacNaughton said, that theater takes many forms.
"Theater doesn't have to happen in a building with a proscenium and a curtain," he said.
"Aglio e Olio" runs from Feb 14-17, with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. and a Sunday performance at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 each and must be purchased in advance, and directions to the home will be provided at time of purchase.

A collaboration between UPS and TerraCycle results in the creation of a reusable shipper, the Loop Tote, optimized to flow smoothly through UPS’s transportation process and provide consumer convenience.
One of the key components of the Loop circular shopping platform is the transportation logistics that enable the products to be delivered to the consumer’s doorstep and the packaging to be picked up and returned to TerraCycle for cleaning. Since mid-2017, long-time TerraCycle partner UPS has been involved both with the design and testing of the Loop Tote as well as testing primary package designs for e-commerce shipment.
“We’ve been working with UPS for such a long time, it was natural they would be our partner for this platform,” shares TerraCycle VP of Global Business Development Toni Rossi. “They were really great in steering us toward questions and things to consider while developing the tote.”
According to UPS Package Engineering Manager Quint Marini, UPS has experience helping customers design packages for one-way shipping. But the Loop Tote was unique in that it required a design that would allow it to be used “over and over and over again.” He says the first step was learning what TerraCycle needed the tote to do and then explaining to them the UPS transportation process.
One consideration was balancing the weight of the products inside the tote. “A lot of times when there’s a weight shift, it affects other containers inside,” says Marini. “So you really have to devise a nice, internal divider system to keep things away from one another number one, and number two, to keep the weight shifts from occurring.”
Other considerations included the durability of the materials, the closure method, and how and where the shipping information would be displayed to allow the package to flow smoothly through the network and ensure barcode readability.
Says Rossi, first and foremost was ensuring the tote would be as durable as the primary packages it was designed to transport. “Creating this type of platform and then having single-use packaging for the shipping is not in the spirit of what we’re trying to create,” he says.
The TerraCycle design team led the project in-house, and when expert knowledge on packaging materials and components was required, it worked with its suppliers. Once TerraCycle had a prototype, UPS tested the tote at its ISTA-certified Package Design and Test Lab in Aurora, IL, to identify weak points in the packaging. After going back and forth two or three times with testing and design tweaks, Marini says the tote was ready for field testing. “The field testing helps us really evaluate the whole system, but more importantly, the shell of the Loop package,” he explains.
The resulting tote measures 19 in. L x 16.5 in. W x 15.5 in. H and is made with a washable, heavy-weight nylon fabric. Inside, a flexible foam grid holds products of varying sizes in place. The tote uses a zipper closure with a tamper seal that is removed by the consumer. On top of the tote is a clear pouch in which the shipping label is placed. Handles on both sides of the tote make it easy to lift and carry.
Through field testing, TerraCycle realized the need to make the tote and the dividers collapsible. “When we are looking at the markets where we’re launching—New York and Paris particularly—space is not a luxury most people have. Creating a tote that can collapse and can be easily stored away was something that was important, so we built it into our design,” Rossi says.
For the frozen supply chain, TerraCycle uses a two-pronged approach. First is the design of the primary packaging. For example, Nestlé created a double-walled, stainless-steel container with thermal properties for its Hägen-Dazs ice cream that, along with the tote, “keeps the ice cream fresh and cold from the moment the canister is filled until it is delivered to the consumer’s home,” says Nestlé. The second part is a component, almost like a cooler, with reusable eutectic plates inside, that slips into the tote. “So, when you couple the thermal capabilities of the package and you add it to that frozen chamber, that allows us to ship something frozen, and there’s no waste whatsoever,” explains Rossi.
UPS also helped TerraCycle with guidance on primary package design for e-commerce shipment. During testing, UPS identified solutions to mitigate material breakdowns, product leaks, exterior packaging design that shows signs of fatigue after limited use, and scratches on metal containers caused by metal closures. Among its recommendations were the use of multi-threaded closures for product containers and a modified capping approach to reduce the risk of leaking products.
From this, TerraCycle’s Loop design department developed a brief for its brand owner partners with design suggestions, such as the types of materials that work well and those to avoid. “Our advice is to steer clear of, for instance, using a thin-walled sodium lime glass, because we know it’s going to break in transit. Use a thicker glass, such as borosilicate glass,” says Rossi. “All of those suggestions are definitely part of the process we use to on-board new partners into the Loop platform.”
Part of the goal of the trials in Paris and New York in spring 2019 will be to continually test the durability, the shippability, leakage issues, and cleanability of brand owners’ package designs, so that by the time a final design is reached, “all those boxes have been checked,” says Rossi.
Through UPS, the totes will be delivered to consumers and picked up within 24 to 48 hours after the order is placed. As with the packages inside, the tote will require a deposit from the consumer. That amount has not yet been finalized, but will be announced before the May rollout.

In late February at the World Economic Forum, in Davos, Switzerland, Tom Szaky, Founder and CEO of TerraCycle, Inc., unveiled what could be one of the most significant and disruptive advances in packaging to date. Along with a number of the world’s largest Consumer Packaged Goods companies and retailers, TerraCycle has created Loop™, a first-of-its-kind shopping platform that will enable consumers to responsibly consume products in customized, brand-specific, durable packaging that is collected, cleaned, refilled, and reused.
The platform will launch in France and in the northeastern U.S. this spring as a pilot, offering more than 300 products in reusable packaging from such heavy-hitters as Procter & Gamble, Nestlé, Unilever, PepsiCo, Mondelēz International, and Danone, to name a few, as well as from smaller companies. The products will be available through the Loop e-commerce site as well as through retail partners’ e-commerce sites and brick-and-mortar locations.
The Loop platform is designed to transform the relationship between consumers and packaging, with the consumer now borrowing the package from the brand owner, much like the milkman model. Through its circular system, Loop offers the convenience of single-use packaging while at the same time removing the responsibility from the consumer of disposing the empty packaging. It gets to the root of packaging waste, rather than trying to manage waste through recycling and other methods after it’s been created.
Loop is also proving to have an extraordinary effect on package design. “It’s not just about eliminating waste; it’s about enabling the future,” says Szaky. “What brands have really started to see is that this is a platform through which they can commercialize innovation in packaging that was never possible in a disposable package—it was not even conceivable.”
Metal containers for Häagen-Dazs ice cream that keep contents cold, toothbrushes with removable, replaceable heads from Oral B, and a stainless-steel Clorox package that keeps wipes wetter longer are just some of the innovations created for Loop. Enhancing the consumer experience, reimagined packaging for products such as Pantene, Seventh Generation, and Crest transform the products into premium, luxury items.
A vision for a world without waste
For 15 years, recycling company TerraCycle has promoted and advanced the idea of a world without waste. It offers a range of free programs for the collection and recycling of hard-to-recycle materials, creating new products from the waste. Its most recent project was to establish the world’s largest supply chain for collecting and recycling ocean plastics, which are used by P&G for its Head & Shoulders haircare product bottles and its Fairy dish soap containers, as well as for packaging for Unilever’s prestige REN Clean Skincare line.
While these efforts are critically important, Szaky says they are not enough to reach the goal of a world without waste. Hence, TerraCycle created Loop—a circular economy shopping platform whose time has come. “It was far less difficult than I thought it would be to get CPGs and retailers to invest in the platform,” he shares. “It’s like the world is ready for it.”
Szaky says he believes there were three factors that influenced the decision by CPGs to participate, even though it involved a complicated and expensive commitment. First was their trust in TerraCycle, built through longstanding relationships. “They knew we were not just a ‘fly-by-night’ operation,” he says.
Second was the packaging crisis brought on by the issue of ocean plastics—a topic that didn’t exist three or four years ago. “People always cared about waste, but it’s more of a crisis now,” Szaky says. “And companies at their board levels are declaring it as a crisis in a way that’s never been done. In addition, there’s also a lot of legislation in the pipeline around anti-disposability [of packaging].”
The third factor, as mentioned earlier, was brand owners’ realization of the functional and aesthetic innovation opportunities afforded by reusable packaging. “What packaging people love about this is that now it’s not a race to the bottom on a price per unit, which it sort of was before. It was always how to make the pack cheaper,” says Szaky. “With Loop, cost is not the primary question. The primary question is, how durable is it?”
Design for reuse
To enter Loop as a manufacturer, the first “rule,” Szaky explains, is that you must move to a reusable package—“that’s simply not negotiable,” he adds.
Each CPG partner is responsible for their own package design, aided by guidelines and best practices developed by TerraCycle and logistics partner UPS. Through testing procedures conducted at its Package Design and Test Lab in Addison, IL, UPS identified solutions to issues related to shipping primary packaging via e-commerce. TerraCycle enumerates some of these suggestions in a design brief it provides brand owner partners when they sign on to Loop.
What TerraCycle looks for in a finished package design is durability, cleanability, and a positive Life Cycle Analysis. “Those are the three things we watch for,” says Szaky. “But then everyone gets to do everything they could ever want to in a pack. You get a far greater range of design choices, because you’re not restricted to a tiny little price. So, a $1 package with 10 uses is 10 cents per use, but a $5 package with 100 uses is 5 cents per use. That’s actually pretty neat in the sense of being able to change the relationship with the economics of packaging.”
The goal for a Loop package is to be able to withstand 100-plus uses, which is not such a stretch if you consider how many times a consumer might refill a reusable water bottle. “Here’s the point,” says Szaky, “once you get to 100 uses, it’s actually not that hard to get into the thousands. It’s hard to know, because we haven’t been able to prove 10,000 uses. For now, we’re aiming for 100 or more uses for every container.”
The three most common types of materials being used for Loop packaging are, in order, stainless steel and aluminum, glass, and engineered plastics such as polycarbonate. So far, materials such as flexibles, disposable plastics, fibers, or leathers have not shown up in any Loop packaging.
Given that the aim of Loop is zero waste, the tote in which products are delivered and empty containers are returned is also reusable.
Consumer convenience
Another factor that makes Loop so timely is consumers’ growing acceptance and use of e-commerce for CPG products. Loop will have its own e-commerce sites—Loopstore.com in the U.S. and maboutiquelook.fr in France—and Loop products will also be available on some CPG and retail partner websites.
Retail partners such as Carrefour in France, Tesco in the U.K., and others will also be selling Loop products in their physical stores. In fact, Carrefour is so enthusiastic about the system it has put many of its private-label products into reusable packages.
In the case of products ordered through e-commerce, the “loop” begins when a consumer places an order online. Their products are then delivered to their doorstep in the reusable Loop tote. When they are done with a product, the consumer places the empty package in one of the totes and alerts Loop to pick it up. (Both products ordered through Loop as well as through its partners’ sites are collected by Loop.) For staple products the consumer wants replenished immediately, the pickup triggers a new shipment.
Consumers who purchase Loop products at a brick-and-mortar store can bring their empties directly back to the store.
The beauty of the program at end of use is that consumers don’t have to clean or sort the empties. “It’s a completely disposable experience,” says Szaky. Sorting and cleaning is done by TerraCycle, which not only has the technology for straightforward cleaning jobs (e.g., cleaning rigid containers), but is also developing a range of technologies to handle more complex packaging components such as trigger sprayers and pumps. The company plans to have a warehousing and cleaning facility in every region in which Loop products are sold.
With Loop, zero waste also means zero product waste. So when TerraCycle receives the containers for cleaning, it evaluates the leftover or used product to see if it can be recovered or recycled. Products are categorized as non-recoverable, as in the case of orange juice or window cleaner, or recoverable. “For recovery, there are two types of products,” Szaky explains. “The first is a product you can recover, but it would be unreasonable to reuse it, such as a razor blade or a toothbrush, which we then recycle. The other is a product, such as the casing of a pen, that it’s not unreasonable to reuse.”
The final stage of the loop is the return of empty, clean packages to brand owners for refilling. The loop is closed when consumers receive new products.
To ensure consumers return the empty packaging and the Loop totes, they pay a deposit for the items when they order the products. “This is key, since these are expensive packages,” says Szaky. “They are never owned by the consumer; the consumer borrows them. And, like anything you borrow, you put a deposit around it.”
When the consumer returns the package, they receive 100% of the deposit back—no matter the shape in which they return it. TerraCycle’s view is that the durability of the package is not the consumer’s responsibility; it’s the responsibility of those who made it.
Will Loop succeed?
There are many reasons Loop should succeed—and in a big way. Among them, the furor over disposable, single-use packaging, the ease of e-commerce, the enhanced consumer experience allowed through higher-quality packaging, and Loop’s appeal to CPGs that are pushing to meet their own aggressive sustainable packaging goals. But will it take off?
Szaky says signs are good. As more of the world’s largest CPGs join the platform, momentum is building, spurring others to join or be left behind. In just one week, he shares, SC Johnson with its Method and Ecover brands, global snacking company Pladis, and Reckitt Benckiser signed on. “And it wasn’t even a unique week,” he says.
Another sign boding well for Loop is the response it has received from the 25 families in New York and the 25 in Paris that have already trialed the platform. Szaky says TerraCycle learned from these trials that once consumers start receiving their products in reusable packaging, they start getting “allergic” to disposability. “The question is, what is the tipping point?” he questions. “Do 20 percent of the products in your life have to be durable for you to say, ‘Forget disposability, I’m done.’”
Compared with other strategies launched to reduce or eliminate packaging waste, such as “package-free” stores and self-dispensing systems, Loop celebrates packaging, enhancing its many functions, such as beauty, product protection, and convenience.
“Packaging isn’t evil,” declares Szaky. “Neither is the idea of plastic or metal or paper. The evil, I think, is spending a lot of effort creating something awesome and then using it once and throwing it away.”

Well, I get ahead of myself. But I figured it would be a task needing fortitude but not like the penultimate scenes to When Worlds Collide or Deep Impact, or maybe half that bad. At most.
But how do you prepare yourself for something you've never seen and couldn't therefore envision? That you can't intellectually encompass because you have nothing to compare it to?
The store was thronged, to be sure, but it was channelled chaos; bumpy but negotiable. Wife finds us a handy parking spot; with her awareness of human nature, while every last parking spot in the lot in front of the store was taken, the spots on the side near the Shari's were NOT all full. People think of the area in front and everyone (including me) gets that tunnel-vision; they don't think about the small lot on the side.
Getting a cart was another challenge. There was not a free cart to be had. We had our library and Powell's City of Books bags and we went to work.
The first real clue that we were not operating under normal rules came in produce, when we found that there was not one bunch of bananas left in the place. At Whole Foods, they came for the kale, first. Here in more proletarian Outer East Portlandia, first they came for the 'nanas.
Walking off to bulk foods, we sang bars from "Yes, We Have No Bananas". because that's the way we roll.
The rest of the trip was uneventful if not for the immense crowd. The 122nd WinCo is laid out like most WinCos; the dairy is at the back.
As was the end of the line to the checkout. Down the dairy case on one side of that aisle; another proceeding the other way in front of the frozen foods case on the opposite side of that aisle. For a short time I worried it was all *one* line and I was going to be coming back that other way, but the WinCo logistics were immaculate; That line went to one end of the register line, our line to the other.
WinCo planning for this was straight-up rockstar, in other words.
Numerous incidences of simple human friendliness. This is when Oregon Nice comes out, in the transition between normal operations and crisis; oh, sure, if the apocalypse extends any more than a few days we'll be eating each other alive, but for the first few days, at least, we'll be cool with each other.
My wife comes back with a cart after I, having secured a place in the line with a few groceries already, had moved out of the dairy aisle alongside the bottled water area, which was by now as dry as the Atacama. The only cat litter available was in a 40-pound bucket, at which point an estimable gentleman donated his cart to her after concluding that he could carry what he had out to his car in his arms.
And I'll never have the opportunity to thank him, alas. Well, we paid that forward in our turn anyway. So that goes.
We waited in the line for check out, chatted philosophical (I can't speak for my spouse but I'm definitely in that phase of life) and exchanged conviviality with the others in the line ... and we checked out of Checkstand 1.
That's how you know this was a capital-E EVENT. Because, my friends, Checkstand 1 at your average WinCo is the one farthest away from the entrance. It's in the booneys, as the WinCo layout has it.
In that way, it's a shame that me and my spouse never had kids. We'd have grandkids who were infants by now, and in a few years, we'd be able to tell them the tale.

These are the settings we have used to get perfect prints on our printers. Printers vary as do different types of filaments and how prints behave in different types of weather! You will need to get comfortable with your printer and how it prints in the hot, cold, and humidity. Regardless of the printer you choose, I recommend keeping your room cool and dry. In Berlin, meanwhile, diplomats have been poring glumly over The Virtue of Nationalism, a book by the Israeli writer Yoram Hazony, which Mr Mitchell had told them was the key to the Trump administration's Europe policy.
Mr Hazony's book -- published in 2018 to fervent applause from conservative commentators in the US -- purports to provide the theoretical gloss on Mr Trump's tweets: nationalism as the cure to "liberal imperialism". The two main "empires" he has in mind are post-cold war, liberal-interventionist America and the EU.
Teutonic brows are furrowing presumably at passages from the book such as this: "The European Union is a German imperial state in all but name . . . Should the United States ever withdraw its protection . . . a strong European executive will be appointed by Germany." Mr Hazony goes on to write that a "German-dominated EU" is an "imperial order", that "will work to delegitimise and undermine the independence of all remaining national states".
Never mind that this is spectacularly misinformed about the status of nation states in Europe or Germany's power over them and the EU. Repress, if you can, the realisation that Mr Hazony thinks the EU could succeed where the Nazis failed. And try to ignore the question implied by both Messrs Pompeo and Hazony: to what imaginary golden age of nationalism exactly should Europe's clock be turned back? 1989? 1945? 1918?
Most Europeans could list a litany of genuine ills afflicting governance in Europe at all levels that this cod-philosophical take misses by a mile. Mr Hazony blithely disregards the complexity and depth of economic, social and technological integration across national boundaries. And, of course, disassembling the EU would not solve the problem of German preponderance -- it would exacerbate it.
But the real value of this and other prescriptions for a new divide-and-rule US policy for Europe lies in the piercing new light they throw on the Trumpian mindset. The nationalism it peddles is not the inclusive, civic kind practised by, say, Canada. On the contrary, this is an ethno-chauvinist nationalism premised on the rule of a majority nation "whose cultural dominance is plain and unquestioned, and against which resistance appears to be futile", as Mr Hazony puts it. That is a framing entirely compatible with the thinking of Hungary's Viktor Orban, the Kremlin or, for that matter, Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany party.
