Dear Shawn, string theory's loop diagrams are not just renormalizable. They are finite. No short-distance divergences arise at all.

It's fundamentally because the strings are extended objects, whose "average radius" is never really shorter than some typical distance scale, the "string scale", which is why two or more strings can never come too close to each other, and the "ultraviolet" region of the integrals is therefore totally omitted, while keeping the theory consistent.

Equivalently, you may rephrase string theory as a string field theory which is close to a quantum field theory with infinitely many "point like fields". In that description, the cancellation of the divergences may also be considered a result of interplay between the infinitely many fields. A funny thing is that this is not a "generic theory with infinitely many fields". String theory relates all their masses and interactions basically in a unique way - so while there are infinitely many fields and/or corresponding particle species (excited strings in a particular vibrational pattern), the theory that includes them is much more predictive than theories with a finite number of fields.

String theory really explains how these infinitely many component fields co-exist and team up to produce a consistent theory. The interplay - the calculation of their properties from the string diagrams - is basically both a necessary and sufficient condition for the consistency of the theory.

The loop diagrams in string theory may normally be written as "thickened Feynman diagrams", like pants connected with other pants by sewing the cylinders in various ways etc. When they're thickened, which comes from the extended stringy character of the particles, they cannot get infinitely thin or singular. Effectively, the set of possible "unequivalent shapes of the pants-like diagrams" is compact and has no regions from which the divergences could arise.

An Internet pedophile ring with up to 70,000 members — thought to be the world’s largest —has been uncovered by police, a security official said Wednesday.

The European police agency Europol said in a statement that “Operation Rescue” had identified 670 suspects and that 230 abused children in 30 countries had been taken to safety. More children are expected to be found, Europol said.

It said that so far 184 people had been arrested and investigations in some countries were continuing. Most of those detained are suspected of direct involvement in sexually abusing children.

They include teachers, police officers and scout leaders, AP reported. One Spaniard who worked at summer youth camps is suspected of abusing some 100 children over five years.

Europol director Rob Wainwright said Wednesday the ring, which communicated using an Internet forum, was “probably the largest online pedophile network in the world.”

Cori Bassett, a public affairs officer for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said in an email that there had been five arrests and four convictions in connection with Operation Rescue in the U.S.

“Arrests so far have been made in Georgia and Connecticut. ICE continues to pursue the leads provided by Europol,” she added.

The website was shut down following the three-year investigation, Europol said.

1880 On 10 February 1880, an article ran in the Daily Times (of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) describing a remarkable invention recently demonstrated by a local inventor, Dr. H.E. Licks. The invention allowed images to be transmitted by telegraph. In other words, it resembled what people today would recognize as a television. However, Licks called his invention a "diaphote," from the Greek dia meaning "through" and photos meaning "light".
Despite the excitement it generated, the diaphote turned out to be a hoax. However, it wasn't until 1917 that "Dr. H.E. Licks" revealed the hoax in a book, Recreations in Mathematics. Licks himself is believed to have been the pseudonym of Mansfield Merriman (1848-1925), a professor of engineering at Lehigh University. *Museum of Hoaxes

1914 The Girl Scout’s patent the trefoil design for their membership badge. The badge was designed by the founder of Girl Guides (renamed in 1913), Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low who began the program in Savannah, Ga. with a group of 18. 1946 War Department revealed the development of ENIAC, an electronic numerical integrator and computer. It is 1000 times faster than human computation. *VFR

In 1958, radar signals were bounced off the planet Venus by MIT engineers at Lincoln Laboratories in experiments conducted during an inferior conjuction with Venus. A maser installed at the Millstone Hill radar site, Westford, Mass., was used. The return echoes were distinguished from the background noise using digital signal processing. The results were confirmation by other researchers, and together led to a more precise determination of the value of the astronomical unit (AU), the Earth's mean distance to the sun. A new value of the AU, 149,600,000 km was adopted at a general meeting of the International Astronomical Union in Hamburg (1964). Radar was also bounced off the Sun (7 Apr 1959). 1747 Aida Yasuaki (February 10, 1747 – October 26, 1817) Japanese mathematician who published about 2000 works. Aida compiled Sampo tensi shinan which appeared in 1788. It is a book of geometry problems, developing formulae for ellipses, spheres, circles etc. Aida explained the use of algebraic expressions and the construction of equations. He also worked on number theory and simplified continued fraction methods due to Seki. *SAU

1785 Claude Louis Marie Henri Navier (10 Feb 1785 in Dijon, France - 21 Aug 1836 in Paris, France) Claude-Louis Navier was a French mathematician best known for the Navier-Stokes equations describing the behaviour of a incompressible fluid. We should note, however, that Navier derived the Navier-Stokes equations despite not fully understanding the physics of the situation which he was modelling. He did not understand about shear stress in a fluid, but rather he based his work on modifying Euler's equations to take into account forces between the molecules in the fluid. 1885 Hardy Cross (10 Feb 1885; died 11 Feb 1959 at age 73) U.S. professor of civil and structural engineering whose outstanding contribution was a method of calculating tendencies to produce motion (moments) in the members of a continuous framework, such as the skeleton of a building. By the use of Cross's technique, known as the moment distribution method, or simply the Hardy Cross method, calculation can be carried to any required degree of accuracy by successive approximations, thus avoiding the immense labour of solving simultaneous equations that contain as many variables as there are rigid joints in a frame. He also successfully applied his mathematical methods to the solution of pipe network problems that arise in municipal water supply design; these methods have been extended to gas pipelines.

1888 Selig Brodetsky (10 February 1888 - 20 May 1954)was educated at Cambridge and Leipzig. He became a lecturer at Bristol and later lecturer and professor at Leeds. He worked on fluid flow with particular emphasis on aerodynamics. He was President of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for a short time. *SAU

1901 Richard Dagobert Brauer (10 Feb 1901; 17 Apr 1977 at age 76) German-American mathematician and educator, a pioneer in the development of algebra theory. He worked with Weyl on several projects including a famous joint paper on spinors (published in 1935 in the American Journal of Mathematics). This work provided a background for Paul Dirac's theory of the spinning electron within the framework of quantum mechanics. With Nesbitt, Brauer introduced the theory of blocks (1937). Brauer used this to obtain results on finite groups, particularly finite simple groups, and the theory of blocks would play a big part in much of Brauer's later work. Starting with his group-theoretical characterisation of the simple groups (1951), he spent the rest of his life formulating a method to classify all finite simple groups. *TIS

1907 Agnes Mary Clerke (10 Feb 1842, 20 Jan 1907) Irish astronomical writer who was a diligent compiler of facts rather than a practicing scientist. Nevertheless, by 1885, her exhaustive treatise, A Popular History of Astronomy in the Nineteenth Century gained international recognition as an authoritative work. In 1903, with Lady Huggins, she was elected an honorary member of the Royal Astronomical Society, a rank previously held only by two other women, Caroline Herschel and Mary Somerville. Her publications included several books and 55 pieces in the Edinburgh Review. DEATHS
1576 Wilhelm Xylander (born Wilhelm Holtzman, graecized to Xylander) (December 26, 1532 – February 10, 1576) was a German classical scholar and humanist.
Xylander was the author of a number of important works. He translated the first six books of Euclid into German with notes, the Arithmetica of Diophantus, and the De quattuor mathematicis scientiis of Michael Psellus into Latin. *Wik

1865 Heinrich Friedrich Emil Lenz (24 Feb 1804, 10 Feb 1865 at age 61) was the Russian physicist who framed Lenz's Law to describe the direction of flow of electric current generated by a wire moving through a magnetic field. Lenz worked on electrical conduction and electromagnetism. In 1833 he reported investigations into the way electrical resistance changes with temperature, showing that an increase in temperature increases the resistance (for a metal). He is best-known for Lenz's law, which he discovered in 1834 while investigating magnetic induction. It states that the current induced by a change flows so as to oppose the effect producing the change. Lenz's law is a consequence of the, more general, law of conservation of energy. *TIS

1868 Sir David Brewster (11 Dec 1781; 10 Feb 1868) Scottish physicist noted for his experimental work in optics and polarized light (light in which all waves lie in the same plane.) He is known for Brewster's Law, which relates the refractive index of a material to its polarizing angle (which is the incident angle at which reflected light becomes completely polarized. He patented the kaleidoscope in 1817. Later, he used lenses to improve three-dimensional images viewed with a stereoscope. 1891 Sonya Kovalevsky (Sofya Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya) (15 Jan 1850; 10 Feb 1891) professor of mathematics at Stockholm. In her youth, her bedroom was wallpapered with the pages of a text from her father’s schooldays, namely, Ostrogradsky’s lithographed lecture notes on the calculus. Study of the novel wallpaper introduced her to the calculus at age 11. She became the greatest woman mathematician prior to the twentieth century. *VFR a Russian mathematician and novelist who made valuable contributions to the theory of differential equations.*TIS She died of influenza in 1891 at age forty-one, after returning from a pleasure trip to Genoa. She is buried in Solna(Stockholm suburb), Sweden, at Norra begravningsplatsen (Northern Cemetery). Alfred Nobel is buried in the same cemetery.

1923 Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (27 Mar 1845 - 10 Feb 1923 at age 77) was a German physicist who discovered the highly penetrating form of radiation that became known as X-rays on 8 Nov 1895. He received the first Nobel Prize for Physics (1901), “in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by the discovery of the remarkable rays subsequently named after him.” This high-energy radiation, though first called Röngen rays, became known as X-rays. 1927 Alfred George Greenhill (29 Nov 1847 in London, England - 10 Feb 1927 in London, England) graduated from Cambridge and became Professor of Mathematics at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. His main work was on Elliptic Functions but he published widely on applications of mathematics to practical problems. He became an honorary member of the EMS in 1908. *SAU

1936 Eleanor Mildred (Balfour) Sidgwick, (11 March 1845 – 10 February 1936) was an activist for the higher education of women, Principal of Newnham College of the University of Cambridge and a leading figure in the Society for Psychical Research.
She was born in East Lothian, daughter of James Maitland Balfour and Lady Blanche Harriet. She was born into perhaps the most prominent political clan in nineteenth-century Britain, the 'Hotel Cecil': her brother Arthur would eventually himself become prime minister. Another brother, Frank, a biologist, died young in a climbing accident.
One of the first students at Newnham College in Cambridge, in 1876 she married (and became converted to feminism by) the philosopher Henry Sidgwick. In 1880 she became Vice-Principal of Newnham under the founding Principal Anne Clough, succeeding as Principal on Miss Clough's death in 1892. She and her husband resided there until 1900, the year of Henry Sidgwick's death. In 1894 Mrs Sidgwick was one of the first three women to serve on a royal commission, the Bryce commission on Secondary Education.
As a young woman, Eleanor had helped (John William Strutt, who was married to her sister, Evelyn) Lord Rayleigh improve the accuracy of experimental measurement of electrical resistance. She conducted several experiments in electricity and with him published three papers in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.
She subsequently turned her careful experimental mind to the question of testing the veracity of claims for psychical phenomena. She was elected President of the Society for Psychical Research in 1908 and named 'president of honour' in 1932. Her Husband, Henry, her brother and future Prime Minister, Arthur, and Lord Rayleigh all were also Presidents of the Society.)
She was a member of the Ladies Dining Society in Cambridge, with 11 other members.
In 1916 Mrs Sidgwick left Cambridge to live with one of her brothers near Woking; she remained there until her death in 1936.
She was awarded honorary degrees by the universities of Manchester, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Birmingham.Most of her writings related to Psychical Research, and are contained in the Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research. Que las hazañas y momentos históricos de los últimos cincuenta años queden plasmados en una instantánea no es del todo extraño, teniendo en cuenta la generalización y normalización de las cámaras, pero no era algo tan habitual a principios del siglo XX. Pero el milagro sucedió en 1927 al reunir a figuras como Albert Einstein, Erwin Schrödinger o Marie Curie en una sola fotografía.

Como cabe pensar únicamente con sólo estos tres nombres no se trata de algo casual y sí, algo tiene que ver la física y la efervescencia de planteamientos, teorías y descubrimiento que ésta y otras ciencias estaban experimentando durante la primera mitad del siglo pasado. Una instantánea que reúne a numerosos genios históricos y más de 15 Premios Nobel, conteniendo así importantes pedazos de la Historia de la ciencia y la humanidad.

La protagonista implícita: la física cuántica (y su establecimiento)

Ahora nos suena a algo casi habitual el concepto "cuántico", de hecho aquí hablamos de manera relativamente frecuente de los progresos que hay en la computación cuántica. Pero esto no era algo que se tenía tan claro hace unos cien años, cuando se empezaba a formular la mecánica cuántica a raíz del concepto "quantum" de Max Planck y otras grandes teorías posteriores como las de la relatividad de Einstein (1905 y 1915), que completaban las ideas de Planck.

Otras figuras y propuestas importantes vinieron en los años posteriores, como los de Louis De Broglie (estableciendo la dualidad onda(materia) o los de Erwin Schrödinger, ya que antes de lo del famoso gato había formulado la ecuación bautizada con su propio apellido y que le dio el Nobel en 1933. Y en un contexto de ebullición científica de este calibre no estaba de más reunir a los principales pensadores y ponerlos a pensar en conjunto.

Las conferencias Solvay nacieron con la intención de reunir a los principales científicos del momento para propulsar el avance de la física cuántica

De ahí nacieron las conferencias Solvay, fundadas por el químico e industrial belga Ernest Solvay en 1912. Un mecenas que tuvo a bien organizar un congreso que reuniese a los principales científicos del momento con el fin de propulsar el avance de la física cuántica, y la idea cuajó tan bien que se hizo posteriormente para tratar problemas abiertos en física y química hasta 2005.

Y fue la quinta, celebrada en 1927, la que reunió a las figuras que observamos en la fotografía. Un congreso celebrado en octubre de ese año con el fin de hablar sobre los electrones, fotones y ese micromundo que trata de explicar la Teoría Cuántica al ser donde empieza a fallar la física clásica.

Los Nobel que había y los que estaban por venir

"Electrones y fotones" era el título de esa conferencia de 1927, en cuyo excepcional plantel merece la pena pararse un poco para repasarlo. Hemos mencionado algunos nombres, pero como decíamos desde un principio se trata de una foto histórica por la asistencia de figuras consagradas en la física y en otros campos, así que veamos quién está en esa singular estampa.

  • En la fila trasera, de izquierda a derecha: Auguste Piccard, Émile Henriot, Paul Ehrenfest, Édouard Herzen, Théophile De Donder, Erwin Schrödinger, Jules Emile Verschaffelt, Wolfgang Pauli, Werner Heisenberg, Ralph Fowler, León Brillouin.
  • En la fila del medio, de izquierda a derecha: Peter Debye, Martin Knudsen, William Lawrence Bragg, Henrik Anthony Kramers, Paul Dirac, Arthur Holly Compton, Louis de Broglie, Max Born, Niels Bohr.
  • En la fila delantera, de izquierda a derecha: Irving Langmuir, Max Planck, Marie Curie, Hendrik Lorentz, Albert Einstein, Paul Langevin, Charles-Eugene Guye, Charles Thomson Rees Wilson, y Owen Richardson.

A modo de resumen, citamos los principales logros de cada uno, lo cual en algunos casos resulta bastante difícil de resumir (o innecesario en cierto modo):

  • Auguste Piccard: el francés fue profesor de física en las universidades de Zurich y Bruselas, pero lo más conocido fue su labor como inventor y explorador, ascendiendo a la estratosfera en una cápsula presurizada, estudiando los rayos cósmicos y estratos ionizados de la estratosfera e inventando el batiscafo en 1948.
  • Émile Henriot: un físico y químico suizo que detectó la radiactividad natural del potasio y el rubidio. Sus métodos de estudio fueron precursores para el desarrollo de las ultracentrífugas y fue pionero en el estudio del microscopio electrónico.
  • Paul Ehrenfest: físico austriaco cuyas principales contribuciones se produjeron en la teoría del Cambio de estado, la relación de la física estadística con la mecánica cuántica y un teorema que recibe su propio nombre.
  • Edouard Herzen: químico belga que fue uno de los principales exponentes del desarrollo de la física y la química durante el siglo XX, participando en seis conferencias Solvay.
  • Théophile de Donder: matemático y físico belga considerado el padre de la termodinámica de procesos irreversibles, candidato en dos ocasiones al premio Nobel de física (de hecho, uno de sus estudiantes, Ilya Prigogine, se llevó el Nobel de química).
  • Erwin Schrödinger: físico y filósofo austriaco que desarrolló la ecuación que describe la evolución temporal de una partícula subatómica masiva de naturaleza ondulatoria y no relativista (que quedaría como ecuación de Schrödinger) y que también realizó importantes contribuciones en el campo de la termodinámica, recibiendo el premio Nobel de física en 1933 por dicha ecuación (compartido con Paul Dirac), y que propuso su famoso experimento mental del gato.
  • Jules Emile Verschaffelt: físico belga que participó en seis de las conferencias Solvay.
  • Wolfgang Pauli: un físico teórico austríaco autor del principio de exclusión, según el cual es imposible que dos electrones (en un átomo) puedan tener la misma energía, el mismo lugar, e idénticos números cuánticos. Hay un cráter lunar y un asteroide (13093) conmemorando su nombre.
  • Werner Heisenberg: físico y filósofo alemán autor del principio de incertidumbre, que afirma que es imposible medir simultáneamente de forma precisa la posición y el momento lineal de una partícula, y recibió el Nobel de Física en 1932.
  • Sir Ralph Howard Fowler: físico y astrónomo británico que trabajó en termódinámica y física estadística y fue el primero en nombrar el Principio cero de la termodinámica.
  • Léon Nicolas Brillouin: físico francés que introdujo el concepto de zonas de Brillouin, relacionado con la propagación de ondas de electrones en redes cristalinas. Desarrolló técnicas de perturbación en el campo de la mecánica cuántica que dieron lugar a la fórmula Brillouin-Wigner, siendo fundador de la física de estado sólido moderna y encontrando una solución al problema del demonio de Maxwell.
  • Peter Debye: ingeniero y profesor universitario estadounidense que realizó numerosos trabajos relacionados con la mecánica cuántica. Extendió la teoría de calor específico de Einstein incluyendo los protones de baja energía y ganó el Nobel de química por contribuir al conocimiento de las estructuras moleculares en 1936.
  • Martin Knudsen: físico danés que realizó contribuciones importantes sobre el flujo molecular de los gases y la teoría cinética molecular. Hay numerosos instrumentos y conceptos científicos que reciben su nombre (flujo de Knudsen, número de Knudsen, capa de Knudsen, medido de Knudsen, etc.).
  • William Lawrence Bragg: físico británico galardonado con el Nobel de Física por su trabajo en el análisis de la estructura de cristales usando difracción de rayos X, junto a su padre.
  • Hendrik Kramers: físico neerlandés que fue asistente de Niels Bohr y trabajó con Werner Heisenberg en trabajos sobre la aplicación de la teoría cuántica a las propiedades de la materia.
  • Paul Dirac: ingeniero eléctrico, matemático y físico teórico británico que formuló la ecuación que describe el comportamiento de fermiones bautizada con su apellido, con la cual se predijo la existencia de la antimateria. Contribuyó de forma notable al desarrollo de la mecánica cuántica y la electrodinámica cuántica y le hemos mencionado antes ya que recibió el Nobel de física junto a Schrödinger en 1933.
  • Arthur Holly Compton: físico estadounidense que estudiando los rayos X descubrió el cambio de longitud de onda de la radiación electromagnética de alta energía al ser dispersada por los electrones, lo cual fue llamado efecto Compton. Recibió el premio Nobel de física en 1927 por este descubrimiento y por sus investigaciones en rayos cósmicos y reflexión, compartiéndolo con Charles Wilson.
  • Louis de Broglie: físico francés que recibió en Nobel de física en 1929 por el descubrimiento de la naturaleza ondulatoria del electrón (la hipótesis de Broglie), lo cual ayudó a justificar la ecuación de Schrödinger.
  • Max Born: matemático y físico alemán que contribuyó a la física cuántica de manera notable con su interpretación probabilística de la función de onda de Schröndiger. Obtuvo el Nobel de Física en 1954 por su labor en mecánica cuántica, compartiéndolo con Walter Bothe.
  • Niels Bohr: físico danés cuyo famoso modelo del átomo (basado en el de Rutherford) planteó el concepto de orbital, de modo que introdujo la teoría de las órbitas cuantificadas, por la cual el número de electrones de cada órbita aumenta desde el interior hacia el exterior. Obtuvo el Nobel de física en 1922.

  • Irving Langmuir: ingeniero, físico yu químico estadounidense que recibió el Nobel de química en 1932 por sus labores en la química de superficie.
  • Max Planck: físico y matemático alemán, padre de la Teoría Cuántica, la cual le dio el Nobel de física en 1918. Descubrió una constante fundamental que recibiría su nombre, usada para calcular la energía de un fotón, al proponer que la radiación no podía ser emitida y absorbida de forma continua, sino que los intercambios energéticos sólo podían ocurrir en determinados momentos y pequeñas cantidades a las que llamó "quantum".
  • Marie Curie: científico polaca, pionera en el campo de la radiactividad (un término que ella misma acuñó) y descubridora de los elementos polonio y radio. Obteniendo el Nobel de física en 1903 (compartido con Pierre Curie y Henri Becquerel) y el de química en 1911 fue la primera persona en recibir dos premios Nobel en distintas especialidades (física y química)​ y la primera mujer en recibir uno.
  • Hendrik Lorentz: físico neerlandés que recibió el Nobel de Física el año 1902 junto con Pieter Zeeman por su investigación en la influencia del magnetismo en la radiación, dando pie al descubrimiento del efecto Zeeman. Fue un pionero de la formulación de las bases de la teoría de la relatividad junto con Henri Poincaré y J. C. Maxwell.
  • Albert Einstein: archiconocido físico alemán que publicó la teoría de la relatividad especial siendo aún empleado en la Oficina de Patentes de Berna, a raíz de la cual dedujo la ecuación de equivalencia masa-energía (E = mc²). Autor de la teoría de la relatividad general y de numerosas explicaciones sobre el efecto fotoeléctrico, recibiendo el Nobel de física en 1921 por todo ello.
  • Paul Langevin: físico francés, fue uno de los organizadores de los congresos Solvay. Conocido por su teoría del magnetismo, desarrolló la ecuación Langevin y las dinámicas también con su mismo nombre.
  • Charles-Eugène Guye: físico suizo, siendo uno de los profesores de Einstein en la Universidad de Ginebra. Llevó a cabo experimentos que buscaron demostrar la dependencia de la masa del electron de su velocidad, cuyos resultados fueron fundamento de las predicciones de Einstein y Lorenz.
  • Charles Thomson Rees Wilson: físico escocés que recibió el Nobel de Física en 1927 por la invención de la cámara de niebla.
  • Sir Owen Willans Richardson: físico británico que obtuvo el premio Nobel de física un año después de Wilson por su trabajo en la emisión termoiónica, estableciendo sus bases gracias a las investigaciones que realizó sobre la pérdida de electrones por los cuerpos calientes en el vacío. Autor de la Ley de Richardson o ecuación de Richardson-Dushmann.

Así, como vemos de los 29 asistentes a la conferencia de Solvay de 1927 un total de 17 eran o iban a ser premios Nobel. De ahí que esta edición fuese tan significativa y que la foto sea probablemente la que más genios reúna en un mismo momento y lugar.

Como curiosidad, como apuntan en Naukas el propio Ernest Solvay no fue a la universidad nunca, pero con sus patentes químicas reunió dinero suficiente como para vivir acomodado y emplear parte de su suma a organizar este congreso científico trianual. En ese encuentro fue donde Einstein, discutiendo sobre el principio de incertidumbre de Heisenberg con Bohr, acuñó su famosa frase "Dios no juega a los dados", a lo que Bohr respondió "Einstein, deja de decirle a Dios lo que ha de hacer".

Lời nói đầu. Tôi có may mắn tháp tùng GS Gerard ‘t Hooft và phu nhân, từ phi trường Tân Sơn Nhất lên Đà Lạt, và chuyến tham quan thành phố, cũng như buổi thuyết trình tại đại học vào đầu tháng 5 vừa qua. Dưới đây là bài viết của tôi ghi lại một số sự kiện của chuyến đi, đời thường cũng như khoa học. Tôi có thêm đôi chút ý kiến riêng trong phần khoa học như một sự bổ sung, cũng như những cảm nghĩ và mơ ước thô thiển cá nhân. Trong mạch này, tôi kể lại chuyến thăm có nhiều hệ quả của Einstein ở Buenos Aires, thủ đô của Argentina, năm 1925, cũng như hai nước khác của Nam Mỹ. Hôm nay chúng ta có một chuyến đi rất vui, một buổi nói chuyện khoa học thật thú vị. Hãy mơ, và nuôi dưỡng, chấp cánh cho giấc mơ để một ngày nào có một sự đổi thay tốt đẹp cho Việt Nam. NXX

Nghệ thuật quan trọng nhất của người thầy là đánh thức niềm vui sáng tạo và nhận thức.A. Einstein
Như đã được báo trước trong Thông cáo báo chí, Giáo sư Gerard ‘t Hooft có hai ngày thăm thành phố Đà Lạt. Ông đến chiều tối ngày 5/5, tham quan ngày 6/5, nói chuyện tại ĐH Đà Lạt ngày 7/5 và rời Đà Lạt chiều hôm đó đi Nha Trang và Quy Nhơn.
Chuyến đi thăm Đà Lạt của GS ‘t Hooft là một sự kiện rất ư thú vị cho thành phố. Từ 125 năm qua khi thành phố được khám phá bởi Bác sĩ Yersin, Đà Lạt là thành phố của quan quyền Pháp Việt, nơi nghĩ dưỡng của họ, thành phố của giới trung lưu sang trọng, của nhà thờ, tu viện, trường học, các villa đẹp, và của hoa. Vào thời Việt Nam mở cửa kinh tế, có một người khách lạ đầu tiên đến vùng đất này, đã đem lòng yêu nó, và đầu tư mà cơ sở ngày nay được biết đến là Cty hoa Đà Lạt Hasfarm. Ông là người Hà Lan. Và hôm nay thành phố được tiếp một vị khách đặc biệt, nhà vật lý giải Nobel rất tên tuổi Gerard ‘t Hooft, cũng từ Hà Lan. Ông không phải nhà đầu tư như thường lệ, mà mang đến cho Đà Lạt tri thức, và muốn đánh thức các tài năng.
Cái ‘duyên’ GS ‘t Hooft đến Đà Lạt có được là do ‘ông tơ bà nguyệt’ Trần Thanh Vân và Lê Kim Ngọc ‘se’. GS ‘t Hooft quyết định thăm “thành phố cao nguyên”, từng được ví là một “Paris nhỏ”, nằm cao 1.500 mét trên mặt biển. Ông có thể xem trên mạng, nhưng có lẽ chưa hình dung về thành phố thanh lịch và đáng yêu này.
Hôm đi máy bay từ Sài gòn lên phi trường Liên Khương, do bị trễ, ông bà không thấy gì không gian ngoài bầu trời tối. Ông bà được đội tiếp tân của Edensee resort tiến đón với hai vòng hoa choàng cổ, và hai hàng người hoan nghênh chào đón. Sau đó họ được đưa lên xe limousine về resort. Trời tối nên chỉ thấy qua ánh đèn xe những khoảnh nhỏ rừng thông hai bên đường trong sự tĩnh mịch. Tại Edensee resort, ông bà được hai vợ chồng doanh nhân Việt kiều Đức, anh Tiêu Như Phương và chị Bạch Mai, chào đón trọng thể với tất cả lòng hiếu khách và sự quý trọng. Resort này đẹp và sang trọng có lẽ thuộc loại “đệ nhất đẳng” tại Đà Lạt, tọa lạt tại một vị trí độc đáo bên bờ hồ Tuyền Lâm, có lẽ là resort đầu tiên của khu hồ. Resort có sức phục vụ các hội nghị “ma-mút” rất lớn, nhưng trong những ngày ít khách, nó chìm trong không gian lắng đọng thần tiên. Đã từng có một đoàn khách Thái Lan từ Chiang Mai đến nghỉ, để được thiền với vài vị sư của họ, bởi họ tìm thấy ở đây một không khí lý tưởng cho việc hành thiền!
Tôi hôm đó, vợ chồng GS ‘t Hooft được chiêu đãi một bữa cơm Việt Nam thanh lịch rồi đi ngủ sớm sau một chuyến bay mười nghìn cây số. Khách mời tiệc tối là TS Phạm S, phó chủ tịch UBND tĩnh Lâm Đồng phụ trách khoa học công nghệ. Ông là người ủng hộ tích cực cuộc thăm viếng của GS ‘t Hooft.

Sáng hôm sau, tôi chắc rằng khi vén các bức màn cửa sổ để nhìn ra khung cảnh bên ngoài, ông bà t’ Hooft sẽ cảm nhận một cảnh “thần tiên” có thật: trước mặt là hồ Tuyền Lâm nước xanh lung linh, xung quanh là rừng thông hàng hàng trên các sườn đồi lượn khúc xen lẫn những tia nắng vàng ấm áp đầu tiên của ngày. Mặt trời, rừng thông xanh, sự tĩnh lặng bao trùm, một cảnh tượng hài hòa thánh thiện biết bao. Chắc phải vui lắm đối với ông bà, giúp mau quên nỗi đi xa mệt nhọc. Ở “thiên đường” đâu ai bao giờ biết mệt. Đất nước của ông bà là đồng bằng. Cái “núi” đầu tiên ông thấy ở tuổi thơ, như được kể trong tự truyện (Tiểu sử Giáo sư Gerard ‘t Hooft), chỉ là một cái đồi cao hơn 100 mét ở Anh!
Điểm tâm xong, ông bà ‘t Hooft, với sự phối hợp với Sở du lịch tỉnh Lâm Đồng, được đưa đi tham quan một số nơi và giải thích về thành phố “Paris nhỏ” này. Xe chạy ngang qua hồ Xuân Hương vào khu trung tâm cho biết. Thành phố tương đối khang trang hơn trước, tuy cũng có vài kiến trúc “hiện đại” không mấy phù hợp lắm với cái nền cổ điển. Ông bà đi thăm một số nhà thờ kiến trúc xưa, trong đó có “nhà thờ con gà”, tức nhà thờ chính tòa đường Trần Phú (tên xưa St Nicholas of Bari Cathedral), nhà ga xưa Đà Lạt, trường Cao đẳng sư phạm Đà Lạt (tên xưa Petit Lycée Dalat), tất cả có kiến trúc Pháp ấn tượng. Và trưa hôm đó ông bà đến thăm làng nuôi dạy trẻ mồ côi SOS của vợ chồng GS Trần Thanh Vân & Lê Kim Ngọc gầy dựng. Buổi thăm trẻ mồ côi có lẽ là một sự kiện thú vị và sinh động nhất đối với ông bà. Khoảng 150 em, cùng với những “bà mẹ nuôi” tề tựu trong sân làng SOS để đón tiếp hai vị khách quý. Họ chụp ảnh lưu niệm và ăn trưa chung trong sân làng. Mọi người đều cảm thấy niềm vui lạ. GS ‘t Hooft nói ý nghĩ của ông, làm sao để các em được giáo dục sớm đến với khoa học. Tôi thầm nghĩ, một chuyến tham quan ở planetarium Quy Nhơn sắp khai trương sẽ là một cuộc khám phá truyệt vời trong đời thơ ấu của các em! Việt Nam làm gì có? Làm gì có những công trình giáo dục khoa học kỹ thuật như thế? Làm gì có được những “cánh cửa sổ” mở ra thế giới khoa học công nghệ, những thứ đã định hình nền văn minh phương Tây, và từ lâu đã tràn qua châu Á?
Buổi chiều trời mưa nên tiết mục chèo kayak trên hồ Tuyền Lâm bị hủy. Tối đến ông bà đi dự buổi chiêu đãi của Sở Văn hóa và Thông tin và nghe nhạc cồng chiêng. Ông bà đã tham gia nhiệt tình vào sinh hoạt văn nghệ với các nghệ nhân dân tộc nam nữ trong những bộ đồ và dụng cụ âm nhạc đặc trưng của họ. Từ hạt Higgs thâm sâu, và các hạt cơ bản ông trở về sống với những cảm giác của nhân loại xa xưa và mộc mạc.
Khác với vợ, GS ‘t Hooft lúc nào cũng ít nói, tập trung. Ông chăm chú ngắm các công trình kiến trúc Pháp và chụp ảnh các loài hoa lạ. Ông không dễ để ngoại cảnh kéo ra khỏi thế giới của ông. Ông giống một “absent-minded professor”, nhưng không phải “đãng trí”, mà luôn luôn sống trong “chánh niệm” trong thế giới của ông.

Sáng hôm sau chúng tôi đến trường Đại học Đà Lạt. Ngài hiệu trưởng Nguyễn Đức Hòa, Phó chủ tịch UBND tỉnh Lâm Đồng, TS Phạm S, Phó hiệu trưởng Nguyễn Văn Kết và nhiều vị lãnh đạo khác đã có mặt sẵn lúc 9 giờ, rất đúng hẹn. Họ mời GS ‘t Hooft và chúng tôi vào phòng riêng để chào mừng, và giới thiệu hoạt động của đại học, cũng như nhân sự. Có vợ chồng GS Trần Hà Anh và chị Hà Ngọc Mai, những Việt kiều Pháp đã gắn bó với đại học từ những năm hòa bình lập lại. Có GS Phù Chí Hòa, người làm vật lý lý thuyết thuộc thế hệ hòa bình, đồng thời là trưởng khoa sư phạm, GS vật lý rất trẻ Nguyễn Đăng Chiến. Tất cả buổi nói chuyện cũng như thuyết trình sau đó đều được thông dịch bởi một người chúng tôi được biết dưới cái tên Tú Anh, duyên dáng và rất chuyên nghiệp. Cô tốt nghiệp tiến sĩ vật lý tại Hàn Quốc, và là trưởng phòng quan hệ quốc tế của đại học. Cô đã góp phần quan trọng trong sự thành công của buổi diễn thuyết.
Hiệu trưởng Nguyễn Đức Hòa đánh giá cao sự hiện diện của GS ‘t Hooft thông qua tổ chức Gặp gỡ Việt Nam của GS Trần Thanh Vân. GS ‘t Hooft là nhà khoa học đạt giải Nobel đầu tiên đến thăm và nói chuyện, đó là một vinh dự rất lớn cho Đại học, ông nói.
Phòng diễn thuyết đại học lớn vừa phải, có sức chứa khoảng hơn 100 người. Khi chúng tôi đến, phòng đầy ắp người, phần lớn các bạn trẻ, trong một không khí náo nức. Chỉ hơi tiếc một điều, hôm đó là thứ hai, các em học sinh cấp III, nhất là của các trường chuyên, phải đi thi, nên các em không thể có mặt, điều GS Trần Thanh Vân lấy làm tiếc.

Bài thuyết trình của GS Gerard ‘t Hooft là rất thú vị cho những người yêu vật lý, vẻ lên một cầu vòng ngủ sắc của vật lý hiện đại đã diễn ra nửa đầu và nửa sau thế kỷ trước. Ông đi từ thế giới phân tử, thế giới nanao, sang thế giới hạt cơ bản như quark, lepton và gluon, và các lực chi phối, lực yếu, lực điện từ và lực mạnh, tất cả tạo thành cái gọi là Mô hình chuẩn mà ông là một trong những người cha khai sinh. Mô hình này đã hình thành rõ nét những năm đầu1970 và có thể gải thích tất cả các hiện tượng vi mô hoàn toàn khớp với các kết quả thí nghiệm. Cao điểm là hạt Higgs, và cơ chế BEH (Brout-Englert-Higgs), cơ chế đã tạo ra khối lượng cho vật chất, mà nếu không có, sẽ không có gì hết, kể cả chúng ta. Thế giới hạt cơ bản được qui định bởi cơ học lượng tử và thuyết tương đối hẹp Einstein.
Những vẫn còn một lực còn nằm ngoài mô hình trên. Đó là lực hấp dẫn, lực cực kỳ yếu so với ba lực nguyên tử trên, nhưng lại có “quyền năng” điều khiển các khối lượng vật chất cấp hành tinh, thiên hà. Lực này được giải thích lần đầu tiên bởi Isaac Newton thế kỷ 17 như định luật hấp dẫn vũ trụ, tỷ lệ nghịch với bình phương khoảng cách. Hơn 250 sau lực này được Albert Einstein “tinh luyện” bằng thuyết tương đối rộng với hệ thống các phương trình trường diễn tả lực hấp dẫn như độ cong của không-thời gian là thế giới thực chúng ta đang sống. Thuyết này có khả năng diễn tả lực hấp dẫn chính xác hơn ở những nơi mà lực này thất bại với Newton.
Chính từ thuyết tương đối rộng này người ra rút ra những hệ quả mang tính “kỳ dị” khó tin: big bangvào buổi sơ khai của vũ trụ, và lỗ đen nơi “chôn vùi” ngay tất cả những gì đến gần nó.
Lỗ đen là những vật thể lạ lùng, do mật độ vật chất tập trung cao độ nên nó có thể hút tất cả vật chất, cả ánh sáng nào đến gần nó, và không cho bất cứ cái gì thoát đi. Nhưng các thăng giáng lượng tử (quantum fluctuations) trong một trường hấp lực mạnh − và đây là khám phá độc đáo của Hawking những năm đầu 1970 − lại cho phép bức xạ thoát ra khỏi quyền năng của hấp lực vô cùng mạnh mẽ, tạo thành bức xạ Hawking một cách yếu ớt với một nhiệt độ nhất định. Lỗ đen, do đó, với thời gian sẽ tự mất dần năng lượng và khối lượng của nó. Đó là một nghịch lý, và cũng là nghịch lý giữa lực hấp dẫn và cơ học lượng tử. Các lỗ đen càng nhỏ, dòng hạt phát ra càng mạnh, làm cho lỗ đen càng nhỏ hơn, cường độ tiếp tục tăng lên cho đến khi bùng nỗ!
Tại đường chân trời (nơi không có điểm trở về), thời gian ngừng chảy đối với người quan sát từ xa, nhưng đối với một người bước vào đó, thì anh ta vẫn nghĩ thời gian vẫn tiếp tục. Hãy tưởng tượng điều gì xảy ra khi chúng ta xem xét cơ học lượng tử trong sự hiện diện của các lỗ đen? Những điều lạ lùng xảy ra đối với các hạt. Còn không gian, thời gian thì sao? Trên nguyên tắc, các lỗ đen có thể nhỏ hơn những hạt căn bản nhỏ nhất đã tìm thấy trong các phòng thí nghiệm.
Các lỗ đen có phải chính chúng là những hạt cơ bản không? Đâu là các phương trình cho một lỗ đen? Lỗ đen sẽ dẫn ta đến một “thế giới khác” bằng “cầu nối Einstein-Rosen” (ký hiệu ER)? Sự hiện diện của “thế giới khác” dẫn đến các vấn đề. Thông tin có thể rò rĩ sang thế giới kia, và trở lại chăng?
Nếu thế thì một lỗ đen riêng lẽ tự nó không thể tuân thủ các phương trình cơ học lượng tử. Nhưng chẳng phải chúng ta đã sử dụng cơ học lượng tử để khám phá các hạt Hawking hay sao? “Không thể được”, theo Leonard Susskind (Quyển sách tham khảo: The Black Hole War – My Battle with Stephen Hawking to Make the World Safe for Quantum Mechanics của Leonard Susskind)
Bây giờ chúng tôi tin tưởng rằng cầu Einstein-Rosen đơn giản nối các điểm đối ngược nhau của cùng một lỗ đen. [Juan Maldacena và Leonard Susskind gợi ý rằng ER = EPR, nghĩa là cầu nối Einstein-Rosen có tính chất thực hiện sự vướng víu lượng tử giữa hai miền của lỗ đen. Lỗ đen là một không bào (vacuole): bên trong nó, không-thời gian không phải rỗng. Và cũng không có chút không-thời gian nào trong đó!
Nếu bạn có thể vượt qua đường chân trời với tốc độ lớn hơn ánh sáng, bạn sẽ xuất hiện lại bên kia lỗ đen! Bởi vì lỗ sâu (wormhole, như cầu ER) kết nối lỗ đen với chính nó. Nhưng bạn xuất hiện với sự đảo ngược-CP (CP-inverted; C phép biến đổi liên hợp điện tích (charge conjugation), P phép biến đổi chẵn lẻ điện tích (parity transformation), và đảo ngược-T (sự đảo ngược thời gian, time reversal). Lúc đó sẽ có “hệ quả quan sát được”: sự vướng víu lượng tử đối cực của các hạt Hawking [antipodal entanglement (EPR) of the Hawking particles]. Có thể các thăng giáng lượng tử dẫn đến các “lỗ đen ảo” (virtual black holes) khắp mọi nơi!

Tôi nghĩ, mọi người hôm đó “ngỡ ngàng” trước bức tranh của vũ trụ diễn ra trước mắt, và có nhiều điều không hiểu. Nhưng tôi tin chắc rằng thính giả Đà Lạt hôm nay hiểu nhiều hơn các thính giả thời Einstein đối với thuyết tương đối một trăm năm trước! Nhưng sự thu hút và truyền cảm hứng mãnh mẽ của mới là điều quan trọng hơn. Có nhiều câu hỏi, nhất là từ các bạn trẻ, đã được nói ra, cũng như chưa được nói ra. Tiếc thời gian đã không cho phép. Về câu hỏi làm sao để trở thành một nhà vật lý lý thuyết giỏi, GS ‘t Hooft cho rằng cần phải có đủ độ đam mê  hoài bão, nếu không muốn nói cháy bỏng, như những điều kiện tiên quyết. Và lao động cật lực. Điều hàm ý phải có một cuộc sống khác, nếu không muốn nói trong “cô đơn và tự do” của Humboldt. Ông đã và còn đang thiết kế một trang mạng “thích học vật lý” giúp sinh viên, người đam mê tự học thêm, và ở đó ông liệt kê những lãnh vực của vật lý hiện đại mà các sinh viên có hoài bảo có thể tham khảo (xem Giáo sư vật lý giải Nobel Gerard ‘t Hooft thăm Đà Lạt: Thông cáo báo chí)
Dường như sau Einstein, chúng ta đang di chuyển đến cột mốc Hawking quan trọng như một bản chỉ đường trong cuộc chinh phục vũ trụ. Trong chốc lát, khám phá của Hawking kết nối ba miền khoa học với nhau: lực hấp dẫn, hay thuyết tương đối rộng, cơ học lượng tử, và khoa học nhiệt. Lỗ đen có thể là viên đá rosetta của vật lý học như dấu hiệu nóng phục vụ cuộc săn lùng bản đồ của Chúa mà Einstein từng trăn trở.
Lỗ đen quả thật chất chứa rất nhiều bí ẩn, khiến các nhà vật lý hàng đầu tập trung vào đó. Bekenstein và Hawking khám phá rằng các bit thông tin chứa trong lỗ đen không hề tỷ lệ với thể tích như thông lệ, mà với diện tích (!), nghĩa là chúng được phân bổ bên trên bề mặt của lỗ đen! Điều đó cho thấy các độ tự do (degrees of freedom, tương ứng với entropy) trong trường hấp lực tỉ lệ với diện tích, khác với những trường hợp không có hấp lực thì tỉ lệ với thể tích. Điều đó có nghĩa là lỗ đen tuân thủ nguyên lý toàn ảnh (holographic principle, ‘t Hooft 93, Susskind 94). Năm 1997, Juan Maldacena chứng minh điều này cho cặp không gian đối ngẫu (duality) /hay tương ứng (correspondence) AdS/CFT. AdS (anti-de Sitter space) có thể hình dung là phần trong của một quả cầu nhiều chiều, một dạng của vũ trụ giới hạn, trong khi CFT (Conformal Field Theory) là bề mặt của nó. Đối ngẫu, hay tương ứng có nghĩa rằng cả hai là tương đương. Cho nên, nếu vũ trụ là một thực thể giới hạn, thì các quá trình vật lý diễn ra trên bề mặt của nó tương đương với những gì diễn ra trong lòng thể tích nó!

Đàm Thanh Sơn và các cộng sự nghiên cứu một loại nhớt, và tìm thấy lỗ đen có một độ nhớt vô cùng thấp. Do tính chất tương ứng toàn ảnh nói trên, các hạt quark và gluon tương tác mạnh ở nhiệt độ cao cũng sẽ có độ nhớt rất thấp. Kết quả lý thuyết này đã được kiểm tra là đúng tại phòng thí nghiệm Brookhaven, xác nhận nguyên lý toàn ảo và sự hữu ích của lý thuyết dây đã được sử dung ở đây. Kết quả này có tiếng vang rất lớn trong cộng đồng vật lý. Maldecena có nhắc đến kết quả này trong bài viết The Illusion of Gravity (Ảo giác Hấp dẫn) trên tạp chí Scientific American, 2007.
Tranh luận về thông tin của vật thể khi rơi vào còn hay mất vẫn còn tiếp diễn sôi nổi, cũng như về bản chất không-thời gian, mối quan hệ của nó và hiệu ứng EPR (vướng víu lượng tử Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen). Hệ thức ER=EPR giữa cầu nối Einstein-Rosen và vướng víu lượng tử EPR được Leonard Susskind và Juan Maldacena đề nghị năm 2013, là một tiên đoán nói rằng các hạt vướng víu được nối nhau bởi một cầu ER (hay lỗ sâu), và hệ thức đó có thể làm nền tảng để thống nhất thuyết tương đối rộng và cơ học lượng tử. Lỗ sâu có tác dụng phi cục bộ (nonlocality), nghĩa là có tác dụng như EPR. Người ta nghĩ rằng giữa các hạt vướng víu nhau có thể có một lỗ dâu bé tí nối liền để thực hiện hiệu ứng vướng víu phi cục bộ. EPR, gắn liền với các tên gọi “phi cục bộ”, hay “tác dụng ma quái từ xa” (spooky action at a distance) như Einstein gọi, một thời gian dài bị bỏ quên, rồi được khám phá có thể có những ứng dụng siêu cao cấp trong công nghệ lượng tử, giờ đây có thể trở thành một chìa khóa quan trọng để hiểu bản chất của không-thời gian và cơ học lượng tử! Trong mạch này, tiên đoán Ryu-Takayanagi của hai nhà vật lý Nhật Bản nói rằng entropy vướng víu (entanglement entropy) có một ý nghĩa hình học cho không-thời gian trong một trường hấp lực, cho thấy có mối quan hệ mật thiết giữa vướng víu và hình học của không-thời gian. Hy vọng qua entropy, các phương trình Einstein của thuyết tương đối rộng có thể được tìm thấy lại (Mark van Raamsdonk). Người ta tin rằng EPR sẽ tạo ra không gian. Không có vướng víu, sẽ không có không gian như chúng ta đang sống. Những điều vô cùng thú vị! Ở đây chúng ta nhớ lại rằng “tác dụng từ xa” của lực hấp dẫn Newton ngay từ đầu không thể giải thích được, đó là chỗ lúng túng của ông, làm cho nhiều người bán tín bán nghi. Giải pháp tạm bợ của ông là giả thuyết có một môi trường ether trong không gian làm trung gian cho lực truyền. Mãi 250 năm sau, lực huyền bí này mới được giải thích bằng độ cong của không-thời gian trong thuyết tương đối rộng của Einstein! Và tác dụng của lực không phải là tức thì như tác dụng ma quái từ xa của EPR, mà chỉ được truyền đi từ vật thể này đến vật thể khác theo vận tốc ánh sáng.
Nếu hai phần của vũ trụ vướng víu càng nhiều với nhau, chúng sẽ tiến gần hơn làm thành một khối. Và nếu ngược lại, không gian sẽ tan rã. Có lẽ cũng đúng cho xã hội, trong đó “vướng víu” là các sinh hoạt dân sự kết nối nhau dưới muôn vàn hình thức. Càng có nhiều vướng víu dân sự, quốc gia càng phát triển và vững bền. Bức tranh ngộ nghĩnh của hai sumo khủng và bé hạt tiêu có thể minh họa cho sự khác biệt của lực hấp dẫn, gravity, thứ chuyển động những vật thể khổng lồ như hành tinh, thiên hà, đối lập với cơ học lượng tử, thứ chuyển động các vật thể nhỏ bé như nguyên tử và các hạt cơ bản. Sự kết hợp của chúng tạo ra bức tranh vũ trụ hôm nay. Người ta vẫn chưa hiểu giữ chúng có điểm chung nào, lại càng không thể thống nhất chúng.
Con người vẫn đi tiếp để thấu hiểu và thống nhất lực hấp dẫn và cơ học lượng tử. Nhưng bất chấp khó khăn, mặc cho lời “cảnh báo” của Wolfgang Pauli: không nên tìm cách thống nhất những gì Chúa đã tách ra, các bộ óc tài năng vẫn đi tìm cái mắc xích còn thiếu. Cái toàn thể, như Hegel nói, mới là chân lý tối hậu. Mục tiêu thống nhất có thể là chuyện thần thoại, nhưng chẳng phải chuyện thần thoại đã từng nuôi dưỡng khoa học hay sao? Và sự thống nhất bao giờ cũng đem lại những kết quả mới hoàn toàn ngạc nhiên, như sự thống nhất điện-từ, với sự tiên đoán sóng điện từ và giúp hiểu bản chất ánh sáng, hay sự thống nhất hai lực yếu và điện từ, gọi là lực điện-yếu, tiên đoán bốn hạt boson không khối lượng của lực, những thứ được tìm thấy sau đó. Chính lý thuyết mới quyết định cái gì có thể quan sát được, như quan điểm triết lý của Einstein!

Ngày hôm đó, tôi có cảm tưởng, trên bầu trời Đà Lạt xuất hiện một vì sao chổi, sao chổi của tri thức  ánh sáng. Nếu nhìn xa hơn, chỉ cách đó vài trăm cây số, người ta sẽ còn thấy một nơi mà các sao chổi xuất hiện từng chùm: Quy Nhơn. Hãy chiêm ngưỡng, và biến năng lượng bên trong thành tác phẩm. Khoa học nói cho cùng là tác phẩm của óc tò mò vô hạn.
Từ nghìn năm, người ta nhìn thấy sao chổi trên trời mà không lý giải được. Isaac Newton, người huyền thoại, đầu tiên lý giải được bằng thuyết sức hấp dẫn vạn vật, tính được chu kỳ thăm viếng của sao chổi. Và chính ông đã trở thành một sao chổi trên bầu trời khoa học thế giới. Khoa học đã tạo ra nhiều sao chổi, có những cái họp nhau từng chùm. Sao chổi Newton chiếu sáng cả bầu trời cho nhân loại hơn 250 năm, trước khi một vì sao chổi khác vĩ đại không kém xuất hiện: Albert Einstein. Thời đại Einstein là thời có lẽ xuất hiện nhiều sao chổi nhất trong lịch sử chỉ trong ba thập niên đầu thế kỷ 20, như một trận “sao băng”.
Để hiểu tầm quan trọng của GS ‘t Hooft, chúng ta hãy nghe Leonard Susskind, một nhà vật lý học lớn của Đại học Stanford nói về ông:
Gerard ‘t Hooft là một người Hà Lan. Nếu đo lường ở số lượng những đóng góp to lớn cho vật lý theo đầu người, thì người Hà Lan chắc chắn là những nhà vật lý lớn nhất của thế giới. Christiaan Huygens, Hendrick Antoon Lorentz, Willem de Sitter, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, George Uhlenbeck, Johannes Diderik van der Waals, Hendrik Gerhard Casimir, Martinus Veltman, Gerard ‘t Hooft, họ chỉ là một số ít những tên tuổi lịch sử lớn nhất. Lorentz và ‘t Hooft có thể nói là những khuôn mặt lịch sử lớn nhất của vật lý. Đối với tôi, ‘t Hooft, hơn cả một nhà vật lý đương thời nào, tượng trưng cho tinh thần của Einstein, Lorentz, và Bohr. Mặc dù ông trẻ hơn tôi sáu tuổi, tôi luôn luôn kính sợ (in awe) ông.
Tôi vui mừng mà nói rằng ‘t Hooft không chỉ là một trong những anh hùng của tôi nhưng còn là một người bạn quý. Mặc dù ông giỏi hơn tôi nhiều về phương diện toán học, tôi luôn luôn cảm nhận trong những đồng nghiệp của tôi, ông là một người mà tôi thấy gần gủi nhất về mặt quan điểm. Trải qua năm tháng, chúng tôi cùng làm việc về những bài toán khó, bị khổ sở vì cùng những nghịch lý, và có những dự đoán tương tự về giải pháp cho những bài toán này. Tôi nghĩ, cũng như tôi, Gerard là một nhà vật lý rất bảo thủ, người không chịu chấp nhận một giải pháp triệt để nào cho một bài toán trừ khi ông cảm thấy tất cả những con đường khác đều vô ích. Và khi đó, ông không biết sợ hãi là gì.

Chiều hôm đó, rời Đà Lạt chúng tôi lên đường QL27C để đưa ông bà ‘t Hooft đi xuống thành phố biển Nha Trang. Con đường này được viền hai bên bằng núi và vách đá, thỉnh thoảng có những con suối rất dốc, trông rất ngoạn mục. Mùa mưa chắc còn ngoạn mục hơn nhiều lần. Tối đó chúng tôi có một bửa cơm do bạn bè của anh chị Tiêu Như Phương thếch đãi trong không khí hết sức vui vẻ và cơi mở. Sáng hôm sau tại Nha Trang chúng tôi đưa ông bà đến thăm viện bảo tàng Bác sĩ Yersin nằm trong Viện Pasteur do ông thành lập một thế kỷ trước, một cuộc tham quan rất thú vị, một con người sống vị khoa học, khám phá – cho Việt Nam. Sau đó chúng tôi đi Quốc lộ 1A thẳng ra Quy Nhơn. Đường tương đối tốt, cảnh quang thú vị. Trên đường chúng tôi ghé thăm “Ghềnh đá đĩa” nằm sát biển, một cái tên nghe lạ, nhưng là nơi hàng vạn cọc đá dài hình khối xếp san sát nhau thành một cảnh quan rất lạ mắt. Ông bà ‘t Hooft dừng lại và thưởng ngoạn rất lâu. Tại cầu Bình Phú, nơi rẽ vào thành phố Quy Nhơn khoảng 30 km, đoàn chúng tôi ngạc nhiên được một đoàn xe đặc biệt của thành phố gửi ra để dẫn đường và hộ tống, vừa chạy vừ kéo còi, đèn hiệu chớp chớp, công an ra dấu để xe giao thông phải tránh! Quả là thành phố Quy Nhơn đã dành cho GS ‘t Hooft một cuộc tiếp đón hết sức trọng thể như một chính khách. Khi xuống xe trước khách sạn, nơi các vị khách sẽ ở trong hai ngày tới, nhiều phóng viên báo đài đã trực sẵn. Hai ông bà được một vị Phó chủ tịch UBND Quy Nhơn và GS Lê Kim Ngọc đón tiếp và trò chuyện thân mật, xen lẫn với những cuộc phỏng vấn của báo đài.

Ở tuổi 72, GS ‘t Hooft có thể nghỉ ngơi và “gác kiếm”, “vui thú điền viên”, như người Việt Nam quen nói. Nhưng không, ông vẫn miệt mài theo đuổi những vấn đề vật lý ở biên giới tri thức, giống như Einstein cho đến những ngày tháng cuối cùng. Ông không xem khoa học như một nghề để sống, mà xem khoa học như một tiếng gọi, một sứ mệnh ông có nhiệm vụ khám phá và truyền bá. Ông xem khoa học như một lý tưởng sống, đúng như tinh thần của Humboldt, và ông cũng sống “cô đơn và tự do”. Ông là người đi gieo hạt, như hình ảnh trong bức tranh Người gieo hạt buổi sáng của danh họa Vincent van Gogh, một đồng hương của ông cuối thế kỷ 19. Ông cũng không phải là trường hợp riêng lẻ, mà cả nền văn hóa của phương Tây là như thế. Họ sống với khoa học cho đến trọn đời. Khoa học chính là lẽ sống. Họ nghiêm chỉnh với khoa học, điều cần thiết như GS ‘t Hooft nói, cho nên họ mới có khoa học. Khoa học quá thú vị, và “thiêng liêng” để “gác kiếm”, hay hưởng nhàn. Con mắt của các nhà khoa học kết nối với “con mắt của Chúa” như nhà thần học Đức Meister Eckhart thế kỷ 13 diễn tả khi ông bàn về bản chất của quan hệ con người với Chúa: “Con mắt mà qua đó tôi nhìn Chúa cũng là cùng con mắt mà qua đó Chúa nhìn tôi. Mắt của tôi và mắt của Chúa là một, và cùng một cái nhìn, và một tri thức, và một tình yêu.” Phải có con mắt sâu sắc như thế mới nhìn thấy Chúa, thấy vũ trụ. Làm sao không “thiêng liêng”, đầy cảm hứng và thôi thúc được?

Xin mở ngoặc: chúng ta nhớ rằng năm 1925 Einstein có một chuyến viếng thăm ba nước châu Mỹ La tinh Brazil, Uruguay và Argentina kéo dài hai tháng, đặc biệt tại Rio de Janeiro, Brazil và Buenos Aires, Argentina. Mục đích của chuyến đi là truyền bá các ý tưởng khoa học, quan điểm hòa bình, và tranh thủ các cộng đồng Do Thái ủng hộ Đại học Hebrew. Ông có một chương trình làm việc dày đặc. Ông được các tổng thống và bộ trưởng tiếp đón. Ông diễn thuyết về thuyết tương đối cho các nhà khoa học cũng như những người-không khoa học. Ở những nơi cho đại chúng, có cả các quan chức tham dự, đưa cả gia đình con cái theo. Hiểu khoa học không quan trọng bằng nhìn thấy và nghe con người đặc biệt này để được truyền cảm hứng. Thời điểm đó, Argentina đã có những sinh viên được đào tạo tại Đức, nên một số nhật báo đã đưa lên trang của mình toàn bộ bài nói chuyện mà sinh viên ghi lại được cho công chúng. Argentina là quốc gia có nền khoa học phát triển nhất ở châu Mỹ La tinh. Cuộc thăm viếng tại Argentina cũng đã được chuẩn bị từ nhiều phía, từ nhà triết học José Ortega y Gasset, chuyên gia thuyết tương đối và bạn thân của Einstein, Paul Langevin, và nhà toán học Rey Pastor, người đã quen Einstein tại Berlin và hết lòng vận động cho chuyến thăm của ông. Tại Buenos Aires, ngoài buổi nói chuyện trước cộng đồng Do Thái, Einstein có 7 hội nghị tại phân khoa các khoa học tự nhiên, vật lý và chính xác, và một bài diễn văn về “chủ nghĩa thực chứng và chủ nghĩa duy tâm: hình học và không gian hữu hạn và vô hạn của Thuyết tương đối rộng” tại khoa triết và văn chương.
Chuyến đi của Einstein đã có những tác động đặc biệt lên cộng đồng đại học Argentina, lên các giới chính trị có trách nhiệm thiết kế các chính sách văn hóa, làm cho họ hiểu rằng nghiên cứu trong các ngành khoa học cơ bản, toán học, vật lý lý thuyết cũng là một bộ phận cấu thành của văn hóa, cái đã bị sao lãng trong quá khứ. Các khoa học cơ bản chính là cỗ máy dẫn đến những thay đổi cơ bản về hiểu biết của con người đối với thế giới và tự nhiên. Các ý tưởng khoa học của Einstein cho thấy cần phải tư duy lại mới về bản chất của tri thức khoa học, và thực tại vật lý. Những điều trên diễn ra sau Phong trào cải cách Đại học năm 1918 nhằm làm cho đại học có quyền tự chủ, một phong trào có ảnh hưởng lên toàn khu vực. Ngày nay, Argentina, đất nước không phải chỉ nổi tiếng về bóng đá với Maradona và Messi, đã có người khổng lồ Juan Martín Maldacena (sinh năm 1968) trên tuyến đầu của vật lý lý thuyết thế giới. Ở độ tuổi ba mươi, ông đã có ảnh hưởng lớn nhất lên ngành vật lý lý thuyết hơn bất cứ ai cùng thế hệ ông. Chính ông là người đã biến Nguyên lý toàn ảnh trở thành một khoa học hữu ích. Ông có nhiều đóng góp toán học cho vật lý, như Witten, và có ảnh hưởng lớn lên sự diễn giải vật lý của toán học, như Polchinski (Susskind). Ông được trao tặng các huân chương dang giá Dirac, Lorentz và các giải thưởng Fundamental Physics, Pomeranchuk. Người ta tính đến nay, trong 21 người được giải Lorentz có 11 người được giải Nobel. Chắc chắn đến lược mình, ông sẽ tác động mạnh mẽ lên sự phát triển vật lý hiện đại ở Argentina và châu Mỹ La Tinh nói chung. Phải chăng đã có một “vướng víu lượng tử” nào đó qua nhiều thế hệ giữa Einstein và Maldecena? Và chúng ta có quyền mơ một vướng víu như thế cho Việt Nam?

The United States Department of Defense is interested in discovering innovative capabilities to advance the Department's modernization priorities and their enabling capabilities.  The Department of Defense Rapid Reaction Technology (RRTO) Innovation Outreach Program will conduct a Solutions Meeting in the Washington, DC area in summer 2019.  The Solutions Meeting will provide selected innovative companies an opportunity to make short technical presentations to government representatives about their technologies and/or products.  There is potential that companies may be selected for pilot projects or experimentation if their technology appears to match the needs described below.

Monetary policy: Return of the Zimdollar

THE Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor John Mangudya is due to release the monetary policy and the policy position is highly anticipated against the sustained monetary related macro-economic deficiencies. As a symptom, the economy has endured a southward gravitation of the exchange rate, including a sharp loss of value through inflation.

Prices of most basics have risen by over 200% since September 2018, and the parallel market has discounted Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and bond notes by 75% over the past 24 months, with most of the value having been shed over the last three months. Broadly, the market continues to be starved of hard currency as well as local money in notes for day-to-day transactions. These challenges are deep-rooted in a weak fiscus and to a lesser extent, the abdication of monetary policy flexibility in a dollarised economy.

The government believes that challenges being encountered on the monetary front are a derivation from fiscal imbalances that has resulted in excessive local borrowing, among other factors. While the prognosis is widely shared by pundits, there is a clear disagreement in terms of what remedies should be adopted to end the crisis. In his 2019 budget, the Minister of Finance Mthulisi Ncube introduced austerity measures to cut back on government spend (as a percentage of income) and increased taxation to spur government revenue.

Over the last two months of 2018, government went on to record firmer revenue numbers ahead of target based on a higher taxation and a surge in inflation, which shows mixed signals in terms of policy measures effectiveness.

Why has local money continued to lose value against the USD if austerity is expected to improve and stabilise the fiscus or is it too early to determine. Indeed, local money has been on a sustained downward spiral although the rate of decline has moderated since December. Part of the reason why exchange rates have stabilised was because of a sharp slowdown in money supply growth rate. In fact, in October, for the first time since January 2018, money supply actually came off, which is a negative growth.

This decline meant government did not inject more money into the economy through Treasury Bills issuances and that it lived within its means, which is commendable.

However, as is the case in most analyses there is a lack of appreciation of costs attached to undertaking certain policy measures.

The October improvement on the fiscus did not represent any firming fundamentals, in-fact, it was mainly an impact of inflationary growth and speculative buying of goods at higher prices. With prices doubling, so did value added tax on sales, among other taxes, as shown in Zimra’s full year numbers. This revenue boost cushioned government’s expenditure bill, which did not necessarily come off. The downside of such a revenue boost is that real income is eroded.

Measures such as the 2% tax on all electronic transactions have had a similar impact of raising tax revenue while exerting a premium on notes, notably hard currency.

Although industry production was generally up in 2018, the extent of income growth was partly a consequence of firming prices, which colours the picture.

Local money has continued to lose value because the net position on most fundamentals remains weak, if not worse-off. The mop-up of excess liquidity has been too minute and thus less effective so far. At the going rate of money supply slowdown, no significant slowdown in exchange rate worsening should be expected.

Likewise, most indications are pointing towards a weaker industry performance in 2019 due to forex shortages and a slowdown in aggregate demand as incomes lose value.

The net balance of payments largely derived from the trade balance is worsening. Exporters have shown a disapproval of the current retention rate and this has dampened production and export receipts, a trend likely to deepen in 2019 if the currency matter is unresolved.

From this, it is apparent that the fiscus leg in isolation does not have the power to solve the economic crisis, neither does it effectively solve the monetary crisis.

There is need to urgently address the economic monetary front to salvage forex receipts, demand and production lest the economy falls into a depression, since a

recession is now most likely in 2019. Austerity globally has, however, never succeeded in isolation of a flexible and weaker monetary regime. If pursued in isolation, as shown earlier, austerity could result in inflationary growth and mid-term overshoot in spend, relative to income.

Whereas government is slowly coming to this realisation, the hanging question is if government was to intervene, through the expected monetary policy, what form of intervention would best be suited for the economy?

There is a high likelihood that through the monetary policy, government will reintroduce the Zim dollar and do away with the multi-currency regime. This projection is based on recent utterances by the Minister of Finance, who said the USD is unsustainable and that Zimbabwe should expect a new currency within a year, a date he later revised downwards three days ago. Similar sentiments were, during the election campaign period, shared by Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, who hinted on a pending

Zimdollar return.

Then Deputy Finance minister Terrence Mukupe shared similar sentiments in one of his Twitter posts. And barely 24 hours ago, the Minister of Mines Winston Chitando, while presenting at the ongoing mining indaba in South Africa, said the monetary policy due to be released would tackle currency issues.

The above is overwhelming evidence of the policy direction the government is due to take with regards the currency. The evident sharp economic losses currently being experienced may have prompted a sooner than anticipated response.

What form or a de-dollarisation could we expect; outright or partial? The government is prepared and adamant to reintroduce an exclusive local currency and do away completely with the multi-currency. LINK

Zimbabwe: Zim On Course to Clear Debts

Zimbabwe is on course to clear obligations to international financial institutions (IFIs), with the Government already in talks with creditors over bridging finance to settle the debts, Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube has said.

Prof Ncube said this in an interview on the sidelines of his presentation to students of Defence Course Intake 7 of 2018, at the Zimbabwe National Defence University in Mazowe.
He said the arrears clearance plan was tied to economic reforms, which are anchoring President Mnangagwa's administration as he seeks to lead Zimbabwe towards attaining Upper Middle Income status by 2030.

"We just need to work harder to make sure that we access the bridging resources for that," said Prof Ncube. "In terms of the bridging resources themselves, of course we are having conversations with the creditors themselves because that is where we can get the cheapest funding. "The cheapest funding you can ever get is from themselves (the World Bank, IMF and African Development Bank) and there are mechanisms through which this can be done and we are working on that; we are having a conversation on that."

Talks for bridging finance can take up to a year, said Prof Ncube, which requires that in the interim, the country should stick to other means of survival. Zimbabwe's arrears to the African Development Bank (AfDB) are $610 million, over $1,16 billion to the World Bank and $212 million to the European Investment Bank. The arrears have to be settled with all the multilateral financial institutions for Zimbabwe to start accessing funds from them.

Prof Ncube said the first step to solving the arrears issue was economic reforms, which started off with the crafting and launching of the Transitional Stabilisation Programme (TSP). The TSP has been widely accepted by the creditors and foreign governments as a "credible document".

Prof Ncube said the issue now was the implementation of the TSP, "and the first test is really through the Budget, that is your implementation instrument and also resource allocation". "The Budget was passed by Senate on the 29th (of January) so that process is complete. We are now going into the implementation phase for the next few months and that's when we will show the track record in walking the talk on our economic reform agenda.

"I must say that from where we sit as Government (and) as Treasury, the path is still clear, we are carrying on with the reform agenda because if you think about it, what's beginning to happen is that we are beginning to really experience some of the pain without completing the reform agenda. "So it is important to complete (the reforms) so that the pain is then worth the investment."

Prof Ncube said they were working closer with the World Bank, IMF and the AfDB. A team from the World Bank has already visited Harare while an IMF team is currently in the country.

Officials from the AfDB are expected in March to speak about the arrears clearance plan. ". . . in terms of interacting with the institutions, the arrears clearance road map involves closer working relationships with the IMF, World Bank and the African Development Bank. "As I speak, this week they (IMF team) are visiting Zimbabwe, I just met them before I came to speak here, at the (National) Defence College (University) and we have been very open, very transparent, very constructive in our conversations about our reform agenda (and) where the economy is headed. "All that is part of the arrears clearance road map, you cannot get to the road map without talking to the three institutions, so arrears clearance, is part of the road map."

Phase three of the arrears clearance will see conversations being deepened with the multilateral lenders. Said Prof Ncube: "So my view is that we are on track. Of course, it doesn't mean that any turbulence we face in the country, does not tamper with our plan. "When you are piloting an aircraft, when you are going through turbulence you must work harder to keep on course because sometimes it feels like, but you need to keep focus on the destination, and they (creditors) are very supportive of us, in getting to that destination. "Equally, those that we owe money are equally supportive, so we are on course."

He emphasised that it was imperative that Government stayed on course regards the reform agenda as it was a "package", together with the arrears clearance plan. Zimbabwe has failed to access a lot of credit lines because of failure to settle its arrears with the World Bank. Prof Ncube said each time local banks try to borrow; they fail to get money directly unless they got a Government guarantee. Local bank's inability to obtain lines of credit directly limits the quantum of funds to support the productive sector. LINK

Les Moonves, fired by CBS over claims of sexual misconduct, has created three new companies under the banner "Moon Rise," according to a filing with the California Secretary of State.

The filing says that Moon Rise Unlimited, Moon Rise Technologies and Moon Rise Productions have been registered since Oct. 30, and the presumed parent company lists Moonves as the lone manager.

Who is going to work with that creep?  I can't believe that.  I thought both he and his trashy wife would be humiliated enough to just live in the shadows.  Instead, he's setting up shot and she's back to hosting BIG BROTHER.

Friday, February 8, 2019.  Joe Biden contemplates a run as the press attacks Tulsi Gabbard.

Starting with US politics, Aime Parnes (THE HILL) observes:


Former Vice President Joe Biden's words and policy positions on the Iraq War could come back to haunt him if he enters the race for the White House.
Biden is popular with Democrats, polls show he leads most of his competitors in the 2020 field and a survey this week found more than 60 percent want him in the race. He routinely leads polls of Democrats asked to pick their favored presidential candidate.
But his words on Iraq from nearly two decades ago sound out-of-step with the increasingly left-leaning party he would be seeking to lead. 
Biden backed the resolution giving President George W. Bush the authority to invade Iraq, and he also praised the president in a Senate floor speech at the time for his handling of the case for war.


Joe did not have the problems that Hillary Clinton or John Edwards had when it came to Iraq.  As the late Elizabeth Edwards noted, John Edwards came clean on Iraq and apologized for it but Hillary refused to take accountability for her support for the Iraq War (saying she was tricked by Bully Boy Bush is not taking accountability, it is saying "I"m so stupid even an idiot can fool me").

Parnes notes 2008 in one sentence but never addresses why it wasn't an issue for Joe when he last attempted to be the Democratic Party nominee.

There are several reasons.  First among them, the Iraq War wasn't his focus, he was focused on partitioning Iraq or creating a federalist system.  He repeatedly denied this was partitioning Iraq.  Many Iraqis disagreed.  During his brief 2007 and January 2008 campaign for the nomination, he was repeatedly on the defense about this issue.  Seeking votes in Iowa in the last stages of his campaign, he was still having to face the issue and clarify or expand on his previous remarks.

It is true that CODEPINK was bird-dogging Hillary Clinton over her vote and support for the Iraq War at this time (and only bird-dogging her) but Joe's mess at that time was being the face of US imperialism announcing that Iraq should be three different government under a federalist system.  This was not what Iraqis were calling for at the time and here was this non-Iraqi from a country that started the war now insisting what would be done next.

Beau Biden is another factor.  Beau served in Iraq.  Chelsea Clinton did not serve in Iraq (though she did support the Iraq War, a reality she tries to lie about today).  With a son in Iraq, the hypocrite label was a little harder to hang on Joe.

There's also the fact that no one really thought Joe Biden stood a chance at the nomination.  He was gaffe prone.  He infamously 'borrowed' from another for a big speech in a previous run.  He wasn't seen as a viable candidate by the press.

What's different now?

Sexism will be called out.  I'm not just referring to Anita Hill (Parnes covers that).  I'm also referring to the media itself.  In New Hampshire, speaking publicly, Hillary's eyes well.  She does not cry, she does not sob.  But Bill Moyers, Jesse Jackson Jr. and countless others mocked her for that, ridiculed her for that, etc.  Months later, Joe Biden, then on the ticket as Barack Obama's running mate, starts crying on stage in the middle of a speech.  It's not even one day's coverage, let alone the weeks of coverage Hillary endured.

Things have changed and they won't help Joe.  Most of all, his Iraq-free card won't exist this time, not after he shamed himself by publicly praising Bully Boy Bush at an awards ceremony last year.  Joe's popularity is as an idea.  As an actual person?  If he runs, his popularity will plummet.

We heard attacks from warmongers in politics/media before. Those opposed to Iraq/Libya/Syria regime change wars are called “dicatator-lovers” or “cozy” with evil regimes. Rather than defend their position, they resort to name-calling & smears. American people wont fall for this.





US House Rep Tulsi Gabbard is running for the 2020 Democratic Party nomination and you know she makes some tremble by the vicious media attacks she's already enduring.




Last Saturday, she officially launched her campaign.




Tulsi Gabbard officially announced her candidacy for President of the United States and kicked off her campaign on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, in Hawaii. She was introduced by Ryan Soon, a fellow member of the Hawaii National Guard who served with her in Iraq and Kuwait. Tulsi's friends, family, and supporters gathered to hear her vision for the future of our nation. More than 3,500 private and public watch parties across the country were coordinated by grassroots supporters to take part in the live-streamed event.
In her remarks, Tulsi Gabbard said, "When we raise our right hand and volunteer to serve, we set aside our own interests—to serve our country and to fight for ALL Americans. We serve as one—indivisible and unbreakable, united by this bond of  love for each other and love for our country. It is this principle of putting service above self, that is at the heart of every soldier, every service member. And it is in this spirit that today I announce my candidacy for President of the United States of America.


"I will bring a soldier's values and principles to the White House—restoring the values of dignity, honor, and respect to the presidency. And above all, love for our people and love of country. I ask you to join me, in this spirit of putting service before self, to stand up against the forces of greed and corruption."

Possibly some of the press attacks stem from the press fear that Tulsi will bring Iraq into the conversation.  Parnes, for example, is convinced that Iraq's not an issue in 2020.

A foreign policy that works for all Americans must also be driven by honest assessments of the full costs and risks associated with going to war. All three of my brothers served in the military, and I know our service members and their families are smart, tough, and resourceful. But having a strong military doesn’t mean we need to constantly use it. An effective deterrent also means showing the good judgment to exercise appropriate restraint. 
Over the past two decades, the United States has been mired in a series of wars that have sapped its strength. The human cost of these wars has been staggering: more than 6,900 killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, another 52,000 wounded, and many more who live every day with the invisible scars of war. By financing these conflicts while cutting taxes, the country has essentially charged the costs of war to a collective credit card for future generations to pay, diverting money that could have been invested in critical domestic priorities. This burden will create a drag on the economy that will last for generations. 
The costs have been extraordinarily high, but these wars have not succeeded even on their own terms. We’ve “turned the corner” in Afghanistan so many times that it seems we’re now going in circles. After years of constant war, Afghanistan hardly resembles a functioning state, and both poppy production and the Taliban are again on the rise. The invasion of Iraq destabilized and fragmented the Middle East, creating enormous suffering and precipitating the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. The region remains a tangled mess—the promise of the Arab Spring crushed, Iran emboldened, Syria devastated, the Islamic State (or ISIS) and its offshoots stubbornly resilient, and a massive refugee crisis threatening to destabilize Europe. Neither military nor civilian policymakers seem capable of defining success, but surely this is not it.
A singular focus on counterterrorism, meanwhile, has dangerously distorted U.S. policies. Here at home, we have allowed an imperial presidency to stretch the Constitution beyond recognition to justify the use of force, with little oversight from Congress. The government has at times defended tactics, such as torture, that are antithetical to American values. Washington has partnered with countries that share neither its goals nor its ideals. Counterterrorism efforts have often undermined other foreign policy priorities, such as reinforcing civilian governance, the rule of law, and human rights abroad. And in some cases, as with U.S. support for Saudi Arabia’s proxy war in Yemen, U.S. policies risk generating even more extremism.
As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I have seen up close how 17 years of conflict have degraded equipment, sapped forces’ readiness, and forced the postponement of investment in critical military capabilities. It has distracted Washington from growing dangers in other parts of the world: a long-term struggle for power in Asia, a revanchist Russia that threatens Europe, and looming unrest in the Western Hemisphere, including a collapsing state in Venezuela that threatens to disrupt its neighbors. Would-be rivals, for their part, have watched and learned, and they are hard at work developing technologies and tactics to leapfrog the United States, investing heavily in such areas as robotics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, and quantum computing. China is making massive bets in these and other areas in an effort to surpass the United States as a global technological power. Whether the United States will maintain its edge and harness these technologies for good remains an open question. 
It is the job of the U.S. government to do what is necessary to protect Americans, but it is long past time to start asking what truly makes the country safer—and what does not. Military efforts alone will never fully succeed at ending terrorism, because it is not possible to fight one’s way out of extremism. Some challenges, such as cyberattacks and nuclear proliferation, require much more than a strong military to combat. And other dangers, such as climate change and the spread of infectious diseases, cannot be solved through military action at all. The United States will spend more than $700 billion on defense in the 2018–19 fiscal year alone. That is more in real terms than was spent under President Ronald Reagan during the Cold War and more than all the rest of the country’s discretionary budget put together. But even as Washington spends more and more, U.S. military leaders point out that funding a muscular military without robust diplomacy, economic statecraft, support for civil society, and development assistance only hamstrings American national power and undercuts any military gains. 
As a candidate, Trump promised to bring U.S. troops home. As president, he has sent more troops into Afghanistan. On the campaign trail, Trump claimed he did not want to police the world. As president, he has expanded the United States’ military footprint around the globe, from doubling the number of U.S. air strikes in Somalia to establishing a drone base in Niger. As a candidate, Trump promised to rebuild the military, but as president, he has gutted the diplomatic corps on which the Pentagon relies. He promised to reduce the threat of nuclear proliferation, but he has undermined a successful nuclear deal with Iran, has failed to roll back the North Korean nuclear program, and seems intent on spurring a new nuclear arms race with Russia. 

These actions do not make Americans safer. It’s time to seriously review the country’s military commitments overseas, and that includes bringing U.S. troops home from Afghanistan and Iraq. They have fought with honor, but additional American blood spilled will not halt the violence or result in a functioning democratic government in either place. 


We've noted that several times before.  We've also noted that foreign policy will be an issue in the 2020 election.  How much of an issue, I don't know.  Even I was shocked by (see Wednesday's snapshot) the "CBS NEWS poll showed that the most pressing topic on the mind of Americans was foreign policy and national security.  Respondents ranked that the number one issue (93%) with jobs and economy second (92%) and healthcare third (80%)."

For a large class of gauge theories in Lorentzian globally hyperbolic space-times, we derive an identity in renormalized perturbation theory which expresses the commutator [QL, −] in terms of a new nilpotent quantum BRST (Becchi, Rouet, Stora, Tyutin) differential and a new quantum anti-bracket which differ from their classical counterparts by certain quantum corrections. Quantum functional inequalities (e.g., the logarithmic Sobolev and Poincaré inequalities) have found widespread application in the study of the behavior of primitive quantum Markov semigroups. The classical counterparts of these inequalities are related to each other via a so-called transportation cost inequality of order 2 (TC2). The latter inequality relies on the notion of a metric on the set of probability distributions called the Wasserstein distance of order 2. (TC2) in turn implies a transportation cost inequality of order 1 (TC1). In this paper, we introduce quantum generalizations of the inequalities (TC1) and (TC2), making use of appropriate quantum versions of the Wasserstein distances, one recently defined by Carlen and Maas and the other defined by us. We establish that these inequalities are related to each other, and to the quantum modified logarithmic Sobolev- and Poincaré inequalities, as in the classical case. We also show that these inequalities imply certain concentration-type results for the invariant state of the underlying semigroup. We consider the example of the depolarizing semigroup to derive concentration inequalities for any finite dimensional full-rank quantum state. These inequalities are then applied to derive upper bounds on the error probabilities occurring in the setting of finite blocklength quantum parameter estimation.

Training attention for conscious non-REM sleep: The yogic practice of yoga-nidrā and its implications for neuroscience research.

Abstract
The study of consciousness within cognitive neuroscience has been dominated in recent years by investigations originating from collaborations between neuroscientific investigators and Buddhist meditation practitioners. The results have been remarkable, particularly when quantitative and qualitative research methods have been combined as they are in the neurophenomenological methodology originated by Francisco Varela. The addition of qualitative data about the experience of the subject greatly enriches the interpretive potential of quantitative data and honors the ultimate subjectivity of all phenomena, if we accept consciousness as the universal first principle as some quantum physicists now do. This remarkable progress, however, has dropped a thread of inquiry begun in the late 1960s by the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas (the United States) under the leadership of Elmer and Alyce Green. Their studies of the conscious control of involuntary processes drew on collaboration with an Indian master of yoga meditation, Swāmī Rāma of the Himālayas, which opened a number of intriguing possibilities, which have yet to be followed up in detail with the most recent research tools and methodologies. Among these is the ability to enter the deepest, non-REM delta wave sleep while maintaining awareness both internally and of one's surroundings (yoga-nidrā). The particular interest in this ability lies not only in the benefits that accrue from especially deep relaxation and an especially pure experience of mindful awareness, but also from the yogi's description of this as a way to gradually learn to enter the deepest states of meditation (samādhi) and remain there even when otherwise active in the world (turīya). This chapter is one of a series hoping to elucidate that state from both traditional and contemporary descriptions of the state of yoga-nidrā, draw measurable hypotheses from these descriptions and discuss the methodological problems of conducting these investigations with sufficiently competent samples of subjects. The focus of this chapter is on training subjects who can become capable of entering the state of yoga-nidrā.

Starting with US politics, Aime Parnes (THE HILL) observes:


Former Vice President Joe Biden's words and policy positions on the Iraq War could come back to haunt him if he enters the race for the White House.
Biden is popular with Democrats, polls show he leads most of his competitors in the 2020 field and a survey this week found more than 60 percent want him in the race. He routinely leads polls of Democrats asked to pick their favored presidential candidate.
But his words on Iraq from nearly two decades ago sound out-of-step with the increasingly left-leaning party he would be seeking to lead. 
Biden backed the resolution giving President George W. Bush the authority to invade Iraq, and he also praised the president in a Senate floor speech at the time for his handling of the case for war.


Joe did not have the problems that Hillary Clinton or John Edwards had when it came to Iraq.  As the late Elizabeth Edwards noted, John Edwards came clean on Iraq and apologized for it but Hillary refused to take accountability for her support for the Iraq War (saying she was tricked by Bully Boy Bush is not taking accountability, it is saying "I"m so stupid even an idiot can fool me").

Parnes notes 2008 in one sentence but never addresses why it wasn't an issue for Joe when he last attempted to be the Democratic Party nominee.

There are several reasons.  First among them, the Iraq War wasn't his focus, he was focused on partitioning Iraq or creating a federalist system.  He repeatedly denied this was partitioning Iraq.  Many Iraqis disagreed.  During his brief 2007 and January 2008 campaign for the nomination, he was repeatedly on the defense about this issue.  Seeking votes in Iowa in the last stages of his campaign, he was still having to face the issue and clarify or expand on his previous remarks.

It is true that CODEPINK was bird-dogging Hillary Clinton over her vote and support for the Iraq War at this time (and only bird-dogging her) but Joe's mess at that time was being the face of US imperialism announcing that Iraq should be three different government under a federalist system.  This was not what Iraqis were calling for at the time and here was this non-Iraqi from a country that started the war now insisting what would be done next.

Beau Biden is another factor.  Beau served in Iraq.  Chelsea Clinton did not serve in Iraq (though she did support the Iraq War, a reality she tries to lie about today).  With a son in Iraq, the hypocrite label was a little harder to hang on Joe.

There's also the fact that no one really thought Joe Biden stood a chance at the nomination.  He was gaffe prone.  He infamously 'borrowed' from another for a big speech in a previous run.  He wasn't seen as a viable candidate by the press.

What's different now?

Sexism will be called out.  I'm not just referring to Anita Hill (Parnes covers that).  I'm also referring to the media itself.  In New Hampshire, speaking publicly, Hillary's eyes well.  She does not cry, she does not sob.  But Bill Moyers, Jesse Jackson Jr. and countless others mocked her for that, ridiculed her for that, etc.  Months later, Joe Biden, then on the ticket as Barack Obama's running mate, starts crying on stage in the middle of a speech.  It's not even one day's coverage, let alone the weeks of coverage Hillary endured.

Things have changed and they won't help Joe.  Most of all, his Iraq-free card won't exist this time, not after he shamed himself by publicly praising Bully Boy Bush at an awards ceremony last year.  Joe's popularity is as an idea.  As an actual person?  If he runs, his popularity will plummet.


We heard attacks from warmongers in politics/media before. Those opposed to Iraq/Libya/Syria regime change wars are called “dicatator-lovers” or “cozy” with evil regimes. Rather than defend their position, they resort to name-calling & smears. American people wont fall for this.





US House Rep Tulsi Gabbard is running for the 2020 Democratic Party nomination and you know she makes some tremble by the vicious media attacks she's already enduring.




Last Saturday, she officially launched her campaign.




Tulsi Gabbard officially announced her candidacy for President of the United States and kicked off her campaign on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, in Hawaii. She was introduced by Ryan Soon, a fellow member of the Hawaii National Guard who served with her in Iraq and Kuwait. Tulsi's friends, family, and supporters gathered to hear her vision for the future of our nation. More than 3,500 private and public watch parties across the country were coordinated by grassroots supporters to take part in the live-streamed event.
In her remarks, Tulsi Gabbard said, "When we raise our right hand and volunteer to serve, we set aside our own interests—to serve our country and to fight for ALL Americans. We serve as one—indivisible and unbreakable, united by this bond of  love for each other and love for our country. It is this principle of putting service above self, that is at the heart of every soldier, every service member. And it is in this spirit that today I announce my candidacy for President of the United States of America.


"I will bring a soldier's values and principles to the White House—restoring the values of dignity, honor, and respect to the presidency. And above all, love for our people and love of country. I ask you to join me, in this spirit of putting service before self, to stand up against the forces of greed and corruption."

Possibly some of the press attacks stem from the press fear that Tulsi will bring Iraq into the conversation.  Parnes, for example, is convinced that Iraq's not an issue in 2020.

Senator Elizabeth Warren's running for the nomination and she's contributed a major paper to COFR's FOREIGN AFFAIRS:




A foreign policy that works for all Americans must also be driven by honest assessments of the full costs and risks associated with going to war. All three of my brothers served in the military, and I know our service members and their families are smart, tough, and resourceful. But having a strong military doesn’t mean we need to constantly use it. An effective deterrent also means showing the good judgment to exercise appropriate restraint. 
Over the past two decades, the United States has been mired in a series of wars that have sapped its strength. The human cost of these wars has been staggering: more than 6,900 killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, another 52,000 wounded, and many more who live every day with the invisible scars of war. By financing these conflicts while cutting taxes, the country has essentially charged the costs of war to a collective credit card for future generations to pay, diverting money that could have been invested in critical domestic priorities. This burden will create a drag on the economy that will last for generations. 
The costs have been extraordinarily high, but these wars have not succeeded even on their own terms. We’ve “turned the corner” in Afghanistan so many times that it seems we’re now going in circles. After years of constant war, Afghanistan hardly resembles a functioning state, and both poppy production and the Taliban are again on the rise. The invasion of Iraq destabilized and fragmented the Middle East, creating enormous suffering and precipitating the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. The region remains a tangled mess—the promise of the Arab Spring crushed, Iran emboldened, Syria devastated, the Islamic State (or ISIS) and its offshoots stubbornly resilient, and a massive refugee crisis threatening to destabilize Europe. Neither military nor civilian policymakers seem capable of defining success, but surely this is not it.
A singular focus on counterterrorism, meanwhile, has dangerously distorted U.S. policies. Here at home, we have allowed an imperial presidency to stretch the Constitution beyond recognition to justify the use of force, with little oversight from Congress. The government has at times defended tactics, such as torture, that are antithetical to American values. Washington has partnered with countries that share neither its goals nor its ideals. Counterterrorism efforts have often undermined other foreign policy priorities, such as reinforcing civilian governance, the rule of law, and human rights abroad. And in some cases, as with U.S. support for Saudi Arabia’s proxy war in Yemen, U.S. policies risk generating even more extremism.
As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I have seen up close how 17 years of conflict have degraded equipment, sapped forces’ readiness, and forced the postponement of investment in critical military capabilities. It has distracted Washington from growing dangers in other parts of the world: a long-term struggle for power in Asia, a revanchist Russia that threatens Europe, and looming unrest in the Western Hemisphere, including a collapsing state in Venezuela that threatens to disrupt its neighbors. Would-be rivals, for their part, have watched and learned, and they are hard at work developing technologies and tactics to leapfrog the United States, investing heavily in such areas as robotics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, and quantum computing. China is making massive bets in these and other areas in an effort to surpass the United States as a global technological power. Whether the United States will maintain its edge and harness these technologies for good remains an open question. 
It is the job of the U.S. government to do what is necessary to protect Americans, but it is long past time to start asking what truly makes the country safer—and what does not. Military efforts alone will never fully succeed at ending terrorism, because it is not possible to fight one’s way out of extremism. Some challenges, such as cyberattacks and nuclear proliferation, require much more than a strong military to combat. And other dangers, such as climate change and the spread of infectious diseases, cannot be solved through military action at all. The United States will spend more than $700 billion on defense in the 2018–19 fiscal year alone. That is more in real terms than was spent under President Ronald Reagan during the Cold War and more than all the rest of the country’s discretionary budget put together. But even as Washington spends more and more, U.S. military leaders point out that funding a muscular military without robust diplomacy, economic statecraft, support for civil society, and development assistance only hamstrings American national power and undercuts any military gains. 
As a candidate, Trump promised to bring U.S. troops home. As president, he has sent more troops into Afghanistan. On the campaign trail, Trump claimed he did not want to police the world. As president, he has expanded the United States’ military footprint around the globe, from doubling the number of U.S. air strikes in Somalia to establishing a drone base in Niger. As a candidate, Trump promised to rebuild the military, but as president, he has gutted the diplomatic corps on which the Pentagon relies. He promised to reduce the threat of nuclear proliferation, but he has undermined a successful nuclear deal with Iran, has failed to roll back the North Korean nuclear program, and seems intent on spurring a new nuclear arms race with Russia. 

These actions do not make Americans safer. It’s time to seriously review the country’s military commitments overseas, and that includes bringing U.S. troops home from Afghanistan and Iraq. They have fought with honor, but additional American blood spilled will not halt the violence or result in a functioning democratic government in either place. 


We've noted that several times before.  We've also noted that foreign policy will be an issue in the 2020 election.  How much of an issue, I don't know.  Even I was shocked by (see Wednesday's snapshot) the "CBS NEWS poll showed that the most pressing topic on the mind of Americans was foreign policy and national security.  Respondents ranked that the number one issue (93%) with jobs and economy second (92%) and healthcare third (80%)."

Abstract:
We introduce a clean cluster spin chain coupled to fully interacting spinless fermions, forming an unconstrained Z2 lattice gauge theory (LGT), which possesses dynamical proximity effect controlled by the entanglement structure of the initial state. We expand the machinery of interaction-driven localization to the realm of LGTs such that for any starting product state, the matter fields exhibit emergent statistical bubble localization, which is driven solely by the cluster interaction, having no topologically trivial noninteracting counterpart, and thus is of a pure dynamical many-body effect. In this vein, our proposed setting provides possibly the minimal model dropping all the conventional assumptions regarding the existence of many-body localization. Through projective measurement of local constituting species, we also identify the coexistence of the disentangled nonergodic matter and thermalized gauge degrees of freedom, which stands completely beyond the standard established phenomenology of quantum disentangled liquids. As a byproduct of self-localization of the proximate fermions, the spin subsystem hosts the long-lived topological edge zero modes, which are dynamically decoupled from the thermalized background Z2 charges of the bulk, and hence remains cold at arbitrary high-energy density. This provides a convenient platform for strong protection of the quantum bits of information, which are embedded at the edges of completely ergodic subsystem; the phenomenon that in the absence of such proximity-induced self-localization could, at best, come about with a prethermal manner in translational invariant systems. Finally, by breaking local Z2 symmetry of the model, we argue that such admixture of particles no longer remains disentangled and the ergodic gauge degrees of freedom act as a “small bath” coupled to the localized components.
