Donald Raab: Leverage Information Chunking to scale your Java library package design      Cache   Translate Page

Organizing and grouping your packages can help make your library easier to navigate, comprehend and grow over time.

Grounds for Sculpture, Hamilton Township, NJ

Scaling Java library package design is hard

Java gives us packages to organize related classes and interfaces. Packages are extremely useful, but can be hard to leverage effectively because every package requires a name. Naming things is hard. Organizing things effectively into a hierarchy can be a challenge. Renaming and moving things may be easy in your IDE, but can be extremely hard on your clients if they have to manually replay the rename and move refactorings in their code when they upgrade your library.

It may seem a trivial decision to put everything in the same package and jar when the number of classes in your library is less than ten or twenty. But what do you do if the number of classes and interfaces you have is much more than that? If you have a large number of interfaces and classes in your library, consider splitting your API and implementation classes into separate packages. Also, if you want to enable others to implement your API without having to include the default implementations, having a separate API jar is helpful.

I will explain the Information Chunking strategy that we leverage in Eclipse Collections. Our package hierarchy evolved significantly over time as the library grew. The package design decisions we made consciously before we open sourced Eclipse Collections have made it possible for us to continue to grow the library over an extended period of time.

How Information Chunking works

The human mind can remember seven plus or minus two things at a time. This is why phone numbers are seven digits long in the United States. Humans can more effectively manage a large set of information if related concepts are grouped together in chunks of seven plus or minus two things. Sometimes sticking strictly with this number isn’t possible without exploding the number of packages unnecessarily. For instance, organizing every primitive type container into its own package would probably be overkill. Alphabetic sorting of interface and class names gives us a visual grouping within a package so we can more quickly focus or ignore things based on their prefix.

Recommendation: Don’t make me scroll. If you make me scroll to see all of the classes in a package, then it is too many.

The Eclipse Collections Package Strategy

  • Separate Interfaces from Implementation
  • Organize top-level packages by container type
  • Organize container type specializations with container types (e.g. sorted)
  • Organize impl packages by Interface type (e.g. Mutable, Immutable)
  • Organize primitive types into a separate package
High-level concerns in Eclipse Collections

Separate Interfaces from Implementation

Eclipse Collections has separate packages and jar files for API interfaces and implementation classes. This allows for clients of our library to understand both the API and implementation separately and group both into a similar mental model by container type.

Eclipse Collections org.eclipse.collections.api/impl packages

Eclipse Collections has separate modules and package names for api and implementation. The api packages are on the left, and the impl packages are on the right.

Eclipse Collections API and Implementation Package Structures

Eclipse Collections is a large library, but has a manageable number of high level concepts grouped into packages. We have organized Eclipse Collections so that it is easy to explore the supported container types and dive into additional detail as necessary.

Having the API interfaces separated from implementation classes has resulted in extra benefits for the library. The implementation classes depend on the API interfaces, but not the other way around. When API interfaces and implementation classes are in the same packages and located in the same jar, it becomes possible to introduce unwanted dependencies between interfaces and their implementation that are hard to remove later.

JDK java.util package

The interfaces and classes contained in the JDK java.util package are shown below.

JDK java.util package

This is a lot of classes and interfaces for a single package. You can differentiate interfaces and classes by their icons, but there is no way to understand the relationship between any of these utility classes. There are collections, exceptions, formatters, comparators, statistics, optionals, calendars, date, service loader, string related stuff, time zones, timer classes, and other utilities all in the same package. This is a bag of interfaces and classes sorted alphabetically by name.

The java.util package has become a parking lot for things loosely classified as “utility”. Ideally, there should be a java.util.collection package which contains only classes and interfaces that deal with collections. Because of the backwards compatibility guarantee of Java, the only reasonable way forward is to introduce new concepts in new packages like java.util.stream.

Google Guava com.google.collect package

These are the classes and interfaces in Google Guava’s com.google.collect package.

Guava package com.google.collect

There are a lot of classes in this package, but they are all related to collections. There is a visual grouping that happens due to the prefix of some classes (e.g. Filtered, Forwarding, Immutable, Regular) but it is hard to focus on the interfaces vs. the implementations to understand the overall focus and scope of the library.

Apache org.apache.commons.collections4 package

The last library I will compare with here is Apache Commons Collections, which is the oldest third-party Java collections library.

Apache package org.apache.commons.collections4

Apache Commons Collections organizes its implementations by container type, but does not split its API interfaces and implementations into separate packages.

Eclipse Collections is the only Java collections library out of the four that has split its API and Implementations into separate packages and separate jar files.

Organize packages by container type

When we decided to add immutable container types and implementations to Eclipse Collections, we knew we needed to reorganize the library. We knew it would not work well if we had over a hundred classes and interfaces in a single package. We also decided it would be good to separate our API interfaces into a separate package structure. We then chose “container type” as the high level package grouping.

This is the set of high level containers we had to figure out how to organize in our API and implementation packages.

Eclipse Collections container types

Each container type then had a set of additional concerns that needed to be addressed in the package hierarchy.

This is what it looks like when you expand the List container type package in both the interface and implementation packages.

Interfaces in API package drive the package hierarchy in implementation package

Organize container type specializations with container types

Eclipse Collections has sorted versions of Bag, Set, and Map. Each of these container types have a sub-package named sorted. This strategy can be used with other container type specializations as needed.

Bag, Set and Map all have sorted versions

Organize impl packages by Interface types

There are three primary interface types for all container types in Eclipse Collections. They are Mutable, Immutable and Iterable (a.k.a. Readable).

Symmetry across container types — Iterable, Mutable, Immutable

For the List container type, there are implementation classes for the interface types of Mutable, Immutable and FixedSize. FixedSize is currently limited to List, Set and Map container types, and is for achieving memory efficiency for Mutable container types that are are like arrays. That is they can be modified, but they cannot be grown.

Object List implementations organized by FixedSize, Immutable and Mutable

Organize primitive types into a separate package

Primitive containers are organized below the container type packages in the API jar and below the Mutable and Immutable packages in the implementation jar.

API packages (left) and Impl packages(right) for List container type and Mutable Implementations only

We could have split the primitive collections into separate packages by primitive type. This would have resulted in eight packages for each of the primitive packages. We decided not to do this because the alphabetic sorting of class names with their prefixes provided enough of a visual grouping in the primitive packages.

Enough is enough

You need to eventually make a decision when you have enough packages in your hierarchy, and it may not work perfectly with the magical number seven in mind.

The mutable collection implementations have a few extra concerns to deal with — Synchronized, Unmodifiable and MultiReader. We felt these concepts did not warrant their own packages. There is no good name we could come up with to group them together in a package. A name like “mutable.other” would not be terribly useful. So we stopped at list.mutable and list.mutable.primitive on the implementation packages.

When is it time to restructure the packages?

We reorganized the packages in Eclipse Collections when we added Immutable Collections to the library (#10), right before we open sourced the library as GS Collections. Immutable Collections significantly increased the number of concepts we had to manage in our packages.

Package restructuring happened around item #10

The next point where we introduced something large to the ecosystem that had to fit into our package hierarchy was with primitive collections (#13). We were able to accomplish this without a complete restructuring by inserting primitive packages into the existing hierarchy below their object counterparts.

The parent packages changed again from com.gs.collections to org.eclipse.collections when the library was migrated to the Eclipse Foundation and became Eclipse Collections. We open sourced a separate library to help users of GS Collections convert to Eclipse Collections — https://github.com/eclipse/gsc-ec-converter

Final Thoughts

Java packages are a solution to help with the problem of name spacing and logical grouping. When you’re evolving and growing a library, you should be prepared to optimize your package structure to allow for better logical grouping and information chunking.

Eclipse Collections is open for contributions. If you like the library, you can let us know by starring it on GitHub.

DeGov is here for all the Government websites Vasundhra Fri, 02/08/2019 - 11:13

Today, our interactions with the digital world have surpassed the human interactions so much that the need for the user interface to be appealing and friendly plays an important role in terms of progression.

Government websites are no different.

The first connection which they have with their citizens is more likely to be an engaging website. One of the most essential tools for meeting the needs of your people or citizens.

So, it has to be the best. Right?

Image of a .gov text where the dot is red in color and the text is blue in color

Creating a functional website with easy navigation not only help officials do better in connecting with their constitutes but also ensures that the public stays well informed all the time.

Drupal is one such platform which helps you achieve all of this in one go.

How is Drupal in Government sector performing?

Drupal is gaining popularity in government sector all over the world. The solidity and flexibility of the platform is the primary reason why the government is moving its online portals to Drupal. Government websites like the white house, Federal IT Spending Dashboard, Data govt. has specifically chosen Drupal for its efficiency. The reason why most of the govt. Websites are choosing Drupal over any other platform is also due to the facts that it is:

  • Secure

Drupal has an excellent track record when it comes to solving and maintaining security issues. The security team (Drupal Community) that works together with other councils watches and ensures that its users are getting the best security practices

The fact that The White House entrusts Drupal as its platform is enough to prove that it is highly secure CMS. There are several security modules that make it a highly reliable platform. Modules like:

Login Security: Drupal sites that are available in both, HTTP and HTTPs provides the user with a lockdown in the login page, and submits the other forms securely via HTTPS. Hence, it prevents passwords and other sensitive user data from being transmitted.

Password Policy: This module forces a user to forcefully create a strong and powerful password.

Captcha: It is the response test which is specifically constructed for determining the user. To check whether the process is being done by a human and not by a robot.

Security Kit: It provides Drupal users with various security hardening options. This doesn’t let the website compromise the data and information to the hackers and other foreign users. Security Kit presents particular mitigation for cross-site request forgery, cross-site scripting, and clickjacking, among other issues.

Two-factor verification: The two-step verification is a procedure that implicates the two-step authentication method, which is performed one after another to verify the requesting access.

Image of a lock, shield, monitor and a cloud placed on a blue background. The text on the image is Drupal 8, A secure way for web development

  • Accessible

Government websites are those kinds which are used by everyone, and by everyone, I mean the visually impaired too. Each citizen should be able to access the government website quickly and seamlessly and according to WACG 2.0 (web content accessibility guidelines), every website should provide equal standards to all the people.
Drupal is one such platform which adheres to each and every WACG guidelines with its different modules and provides accessibility to everyone.

Alt text: This is one of the most important modules when it comes to providing accessibility to a website. With this module, the search engine understands the text of an image or a page and screen readers read it loudly to the user.

Content accessibility: This module checks all the type of fields where the user can enter formatting. Below the content section of the accessibility page, the user is provided with the option to turn the tests on or off using the tab that would appear below the page.

Accessibility in WYSIWYG: This type of module integrates the accessibility configuration with the WYSIWYG or CKEditor modules, which provide the user with a new button while they are editing the content that checks the work for accessibility issue.

Image of the blue Drupal drop which has stick images of a person on a wheelchair and a person spreading its arms

  • Economical

The government budget for software developments cannot be compared to the budget of large enterprises for the same purpose. The government needs to opt for a high-quality solution that does not cost a fortune. High development and maintenance costs may be considered as an obstacle to finding high-quality website solutions.

Thus, Drupal meets these and many other requirements are the reason why the government chose it as there CMS. The Drupal development price is relatively low when it is compared with other CMS in the market.

  • Scalable

Another great feature of Drupal8 is its perfect scalability. The CMS is suitable for both small survey website as well as the content-rich websites with gigabyte information.

At the same time, Drupal is capable of handling high traffic issues and problems. Web solution built on this tool is available even when the traffic volume jumps sky high. A great example of the same is UNESCO and CERN web channels. These Drupal-based websites offer a great user experience and thousands of people use it on daily basis.

  • Easily Customized

When we say government websites we automatically imagine something grey, black, white or something really boring. But one has to remember that these website services both political and non- political purposes. Thus, user interaction and engagement then here becomes a crucial aspect.

Better user engagement is made possible with Drupal and its modules. The administrator can add blogs, articles, write-ups that contributes highly opportunities and solutions. Not only this but Drupal also gives its user the power to personalize their website according to their needs and requirement, making it a flexible and reliable CMS.

  • Has superb integration capabilities

A powerful web solution should integrate seamlessly with third-party applications. Publishing tools, data repository, and other features belong to the list of necessary interactions.

The integration capabilities offered by Drupal is enormous. It provides numerous options so that the user is able to integrate any type of third party service.

Drupal Distribution: DeGov to the rescue

DeGov is the first Drupal 8 open source distribution focussing entirely on the needs of the governmental organizations. It is intended to provide a comprehensive set of functionalities that are commonly used only of the applications that are related to government.

What DeGov is not?

The DeGov distribution is not a commercial CMS ( developed as well as owned by a single company, and the users usually need to buy a license) and it is not a finalized product. Meaning, DeGov is not a ready solution. The reason is that there are a lot of functionalities and ideas in backlog and hence it is a daily work off process.

DeGov is an idea to realize the benefits in the public sector with the idea of open source.

Use case related to DeGov

DeGov has 6 use cases and extends its valuable functions to meet certain scenarios.

  • Publishes information for all the websites that are government based organizations of all level.
  • Service-oriented E-government portals, that closes the gaps between the users/ citizens and administrator.
  • Citizen engagement portals to decline and discuss online.
  • Open311 portal for civic issue tracking.
  • Open Data portal for publishing and creating communities data

Intranet and Extranet of government employees.

An infographic with 6 parts describing the use case of DeGov.

Beneath the Canopy of DeGov

DeGov is the sub-profile of the lightning distribution.

Lightning allows you to create sub-profiles that are entirely based on default lightening distribution profile. Creating a sub-profile enables you to customize the installation process to meet specific needs and requirements.

By combining DeGov and lightening distribution, it delivers configuration that is specialized to start new projects. Building on top of Lightning, DeGov leverages in a true open source manner that allows focussing on functionalities for the public sector.

Which problems does DeGov solve?

Editor

DeGov solves the issues that are all related to complex backends, missing workflow, multi-language as a pain, missing modernity etc. It allows the editors with highest design flexibility in the maintenance of the website as well as simple editing of the content.

With the help of “Drag and Drop” function, you can easily structure your page even without the help of programming. Predefined page type helps in easy maintenance. In the central media library, all types of media are managed no matter what form or type it is (pictures, PDFs, videos, posts)

DeGov distribution also helps in easy integrating of the social media. Likewise, you can allow the users to easily share the content in form of articles, blogs, and other write-ups. DeGov uses the privacy- compliant integration of social media share buttons.

Customers and clients

DeGov solves the issues that are related to the features and high ownership with old and propriety technologies.  It a user-friendly web front with attractive designs. It is responsive and thus adapts to any device and its size.  The use of HTML/CSS makes a website accessible. Likewise, the page can be made translated into several languages. A language switcher and an automatic screen reader translate the workflow easily.

DeGov websites receive a powerful search function for the website content as well as the documents. This is particularly convenient for the authorities: The administrator search engine and NRW  that is connected to the service so that users can also search the content outside their area of responsibility.

Companies and developers

It solves the issue related to high-cost updates and the functionalities that are related to it. The distribution is based on opensource software, as a result, you pay neither for the license nor you purchase it.

Drupal is used in numerous projects thus the basic functions and the functionalities are constantly updated and expanded from time to time. This fixes all the bugs and vulnerabilities quickly.

Implementations with DeGov

Websites

The DeGov distribution has the ability to release, federal and state portals, as well as internet sites for ministries, authorities, districts, and municipalities. The web pages and the target group-specific portals (or topic pages) can be created easily by DeGov.

Participation Portals

With participation portals to let the citizens participate in decisions and proposed measures, DeGov distribution has opened doors in terms of communication. Here you can notify, discuss with users, gather valuable suggestions or create polls. From participatory budgeting through bills to constructing methods - portals obtained by DeGov give citizens as a voice.

E-Government Portals

DeGov distribution is a great way to implement entire eGovernment portals. Less stress is laid on the editorial content than whole specialist procedures. In this way, DeGov allows the digital processing of administrative processes. The project Gewerbe.NRW was implemented with the help of DeGov distribution.

Why DeGov with Drupal 8?

DeGov modules are Drupal modules which are carefully fit together. This means that the whole system benefits largely with its functionalities. The reasons why Drupal 8 should be with DeGov is because:

  • It is based on Symfony and it uses composers.
  • It is Git accessible for config files.
  • It is cloud-ready and runs like a modern PHP solution

Better projects with DeGov

Image of a table having the list of all media types

A case study on Gewerbe-Service-Portal.NRW

The new "Gewerbe-Service-Portal.NRW" has been providing citizen friendly services by allowing company founder in German federal state North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) to electorally register a business from home. Its main aim was to provide aid of a clearly arranged online form, commercial registration and that can be transmitted to responsible citizens.

In addition to the business registration, the portal provided with information to the topic “foundation of an enterprise”. Furthermost all the users had access to Einheitliche Ansprechpartner NRW. Also, the online service supported specialized staff in taking up a service occupation.

The portal was developed on the basis of the content management Drupal-based system DeGov and nrwGOV. They chose Drupal because of that fact that it was cost-effective and new technologies could be adapted to the Drupal community. Apart from this Drupal provided with:

  • Higher safety and better quality
  • Independence
  • Comprehensive option
  • Accessibility

The portal aimed at providing more flexibility to the entrepreneur that is eligible to start there own business by saving time through digitization. The electronic forwarding and processing of the application by authorities ensured effective processing within applications. The result was effective and user-friendly communication between the citizens and authorities. Whereas in the near future the Gewerbe-Service-Portal.NRW will develop a comprehensive service platform so that the administrative process could be carried out at home.

In the Nutshell

So how important is the government website to you?

The answer might have been crystal clear by now.

As important as it is to have a website, maintaining it a whole different task. Yes, Drupal is making it easy for you by its functionality and distribution.  But the definite art of maintaining it is as important as creating it.

Ping us on hello@opensenselabs.com our services would not only get the best out of Drupal but would also but would also help in enhancing your development and industrial standards.

Drupal blog: Drupal helps rescue ultra marathon runner      Cache   Translate Page

This blog has been re-posted and edited with permission from Dries Buytaert's blog.

I'm frequently sent examples of how Drupal has changed the lives of developers, business owners and end users. Recently, I received a very different story of how Drupal had helped in a rescue operation that saved a man's life.

The Snowdonia Ultra Marathon website

In early 2018, Race Director Mike Jones was looking to build a new website for the Ultra-Trail Snowdonia ultra marathon. He reached out to a good friend and developer, Rob Edwards, to lead the development of the website.

A photo of a runner at the Ultra-trail Snowdonia ultramarathon

Rob chose Drupal for its flexibility and extensibility. As an organization supported heavily by volunteers, open source also fit the Snowdonia team's belief in community.

The resulting website, https://apexrunning.co/, included a custom-built timing module. This module allowed volunteers to register each runner and their time at every aid stop.

A runner goes missing

Rob attended the first day of Ultra-Trail Snowdonia to ensure the website ran smoothly. He also monitored the runners at the end of the race to certify they were all accounted for.

Monitoring the system into the early hours of the morning, Rob noticed one runner, after successfully completing checkpoints one and two, hadn't passed through the third checkpoint.

A photo of a runner at the Ultra-trail Snowdonia ultramarathon

© Ultra-trail Snowdonia and No Limits Photography

Each runner carried a mobile phone with them for emergencies. Mike attempted to make contact with the runner via phone to ensure he was safe. However, this specific area was known for its poor signal and the connection was too weak to get through.

After some more time eagerly watching the live updates, it was clear the runner hadn't reached checkpoint four and more likely hadn't ever made it past checkpoint three. The Ogwen Mountain Rescue were called to action.

Due to the terrain and temperature, searching for the lost runner on foot would be too slow. Instead, the mountain rescue volunteers used a helicopter to scan the area and locate the runner.

How Drupal came to the rescue

The area covered by runners in an ultra marathon like this one is vast. The custom-built timing module helped rescuers narrow down the search area; they knew the runner passed the second checkpoint but never made it to the third.

After following the fluorescent orange markers in the area pinpointed by the Drupal website, the team quickly found the individual. He had fallen and become too injured to carry on. A mild case of hypothermia had set in. The runner was airlifted to the hospital for appropriate care. The good news: the runner survived.

Without Drupal, it might have taken much longer to notify anyone that a runner had gone missing, and there would have been no way to tell when he had dropped off.

NFC and GPS devices are now being explored for these ultra marathon runners to carry with them to provide location data as an extra safety precaution. The Drupal system will be used alongside these devices for more accurate time readings, and Rob is looking into an API to pull this additional data into the Drupal website.

Stories about Drupal having an impact on organizations and individuals, or even helping out in emergencies, drive my sense of purpose. Feel free to keep sending them my way!

Special thanks to Rob EdwardsPoppy Heap (CTI Digital) and Paul Johnson (CTI Digital) for their help with this blog post.

Railroader: Security static analysis tool for Ruby on Rails (Brakeman fork)      Cache   Translate Page

I’ve kicked off the Railroader project to maintain a security static analysis tool for Ruby on Rails that is open source software. If you are developing with Ruby on Rails, please consider using Railroader. We would also really love contributions, so please contribute!

A security static analysis tool (analyzer) examines software to help you identify vulnerabilities (without running the possibly-vulnerable program). This helps you find and fix vulnerabilities before you field your web application. Ruby on Rails is a popular framework for developing web applications; sites that use Rails include GitHub, Airbnb, Bloomberg, Soundcloud, Groupon, Indiegogo, Kickstarter, Scribd, MyFitnessPal, Shopify, Urban Dictionary, Twitch.tv, GitLab, and the Core Infrastructure Initiative (CII) Best Practices Badge.

In the past the obvious tool for this purpose was Brakeman. However, Brakeman has switched to the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 Public License (CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0). This is not an open source software license since it cannot be used commercially (an OSS license cannot discriminate against a field of endeavor). Similarly, it is not a free software license (since you cannot run the program as you wish / for any purpose). You can verify this by looking at the Brakeman 4.4.0 release announcement, the SPDX license list, Debian’s “The Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG) and Software Licenses”, Various Licenses and Comments about Them (Free Software Foundation), and Fedora’s Licensing:Main (Bad Licenses list). Railroader conitinues using the original licenses: MIT for code and CC-BY-3.0 for the website. MIT, of course, is a very well-known and widely-used open source software license.

If you are currently using Brakeman, do not update to Brakeman version 4.4.0 or later until you first talk with your lawyer. At the very least, if you plan to use newer versions of Brakeman, check their new license carefully to make sure that there is no possibility of a legal issue. This license change was part of a purchase of Brakeman by Synopsys. Synopsys is a big company, and they definitely have the resources to sue people who don’t obey their legal terms. Even if they didn’t, it is not okay to use software when you don’t have the right to do so. Either make sure that you have no legal issues… or just switch to Railroader, where nothing has changed.

Unfortunately, it is really easy to “just upgrade to the latest release” of Brakeman without realizing that this is a major license change. I suspect a lot of people will just automatically download and run the latest version, and have no idea that this is happening. I only noticed because I routinely use software license checkers (license_finder in my case) so that I immediately notice license changes in a newer version. I strongly recommend adding static source code analyzers and license checkers as part of your continuous integration (CI).

We assume that “Brakeman” is now a trademarked by Synopsys, Inc, so we’ve tried to rename everything so that the projects are clearly distinct. If we’ve missed something, please let us know and we’ll fix it. The term “Railroader” is a play on the word Rails, but it is obviously a completely different word. Railroader shares a common code base historically with Brakeman, and that’s important to explain, but they are not the same projects and we are expressly trying to not infringe on any Brakeman trademark. It’s obviously legal to copy and modify materials licensed under the MIT and CC-BY-3.0 licenses (that’s the purpose of these licenses), so we believe there is no legal problem.

I think I have a reasonable background for starting this project. I created and maintain flawfinder, a security static analysis tool for C/C++, since 2001. I literally wrote the book on developing secure software; see my book Secure Programming HOWTO. I even teach a graduate class at George Mason Univerity (GMU) on how to develop secure software. For an example of how I approach securing software in an affordable way, see my video How to Develop Secure Applications: The BadgeApp Example (2017-09-18) or the related document BadgeApp Security: Its Assurance Case. I have also long analyzed software licenses, e.g., see The Free-Libre / Open Source Software (FLOSS) License Slide, Free-Libre / Open Source Software (FLOSS) is Commercial Software, and Publicly Releasing Open Source Software Developed for the U.S. Government.

While Railroader is a project fork, we hope that this is not a hosttile fork. We will not accept software licensed only under CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0, since that is not an OSS license. But we’ll gladly accept good contributions from anyone if they are released under the original OSS licenses (MIT for software, CC-BY-3.0 for website content). If the Brakeman project wants to cooperate in some way, we’d love to talk! We are all united in our desire to squash out vulnerabilities before they are deployed. In addition, we’re grateful for all the work that the Brakeman community has done.

So, again: If you are developing with Ruby on Rails, please consider using Railroader. We would also really love contributions, so please contribute!

Testing Java Microservice by Alex Soto, Andy Gumbrecht      Cache   Translate Page
With traditional software unit tests, there's never a guarantee that an application will actually function correctly in the production environment. And when you add microservices, remote resources that are accessible over a network, into the mix, testing is more tricky. To make things even harder, microservices typically need to collaborate with additional network-based microservices, making testing even more challenging. In this session you'll learn test strategies that solve the most common issues you are likely to encounter when writing tests for microservices architecture. Also you'll learn how tools such as Arquillian, JUnit, Docker or techniques suck as service virtualization or consumer-driven testing can help you on this task.           Google Pixel 4 будет двухсимочником      Cache   Translate Page

Google Pixel 4

  • Databricks Continues To Grow Big Data Platform For Enterprise Apps

Demand for advanced data analytics is helping to push Databricks and the open source Apache Spark project forward.

At the core of many modern enterprise apps and services is a fundamental need for data analytics. It's a need that Databricks and the open source Apache Spark project that it leads both help to fill.

It's also a need that a lot of organizations are willing to pay for. On Feb. 5, Databricks announced that it now generates over $100 million in annual revenue. Databricks still wants to grow more, and to that end the company raised a $250 million Series E funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, Coatue Management, Microsoft, and New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Total funding to date for Databricks now stands at $498.5 million, and the company has a publicly stated valuation of $2.75 billion.

  • HP’s Ink Subscription Has DRM That Disables Your Printer Cartridges

In mid-2016 I was running into a recurring issue. I was always out of printer ink, and new cartridges were expensive. Laser printers can be cheaper for many people, but my household does print as many color photos as it does text documents, which means they’re not a good choice for me. So I purchased a new inkjet printer on the promise of HP’s easy-to-use ink subscription service. For a low cost, I would always have all the ink I needed—as long as I kept to a page limit, that is.

Now, years later, I’ve realized there was one other price of admission. The ink they’ve sent me isn’t mine; it’s theirs. And if I cancel the subscription when the billing cycle ends, the printer won’t use the ink anymore, and HP requires I send it back to them. I have to buy new ink to replace the ink that is already in my house.

  • FOSDEM 2019 and Plasma Mobile Sprint

FOSDEM was fun and inspiring as usual, even if actually getting to see talks has become almost impossible, due to the limit amount of space and the ever growing amount of attendees. However the real value of FOSDEM for me is meeting people anyway, you can’t move a few meters without running into someone you know and want to catch up with.

Adrian and Agustín have already written about KDE’s presence. My personal highlight was Alistair’s work of bringing Plasma Mobile to RISC-V. Open Source harware and Free Software are a perfect team, and it was also very nice to see our work on bringing KDE components to Yocto being used for this.

  • The Browser Tutorial

Last week I was invited to give a talk at the first edition of the “Jornadas Tecnológicas Insert Coín” in Coín (Málaga, Spain) to the students of the high school I.E.S. Los Montecillos and other high schools of the area. The subject of the talk was cross-platform development with KDE and Qt. I think the talk was very well received and the students seemed to like it (at least, I think they did). I organized the talk in two sections, first some slides about Qt and KDE (mostly about KDE Frameworks), and then some “live” development to show how use Qt Creator to develop a small web browser with Qt in C++ and then how to use KDevelop to develop the same application in Python.

first of all HI Sean The main goal is to push the open source Technology for the propuse of the movie. Unreal is no free because is only for noncommercial use and sencond unreal is not 100% raytrace I can tell you that because, I worked for epic and now, I work for EA, I know pretty well how game engines work. Cycles has the power to compete with all the big boys in the industry the mainproblem in the industry right now is that there is a lot of people using maya and other commecial softwares and those people always say that the transition is long to change to another software in small words people is lazy. As a professional in the insdustry, I work with maya max an modo BUT, I prefere Blender in my outsource freelance projects, I work all the time with blender and then, I just migrate the files into maya or max and thats it. Cycles can compete very easy agaisnt vray, arnold or redshift. The main problem in the industry is ignorance people think because is free it can not do something good but fanboys are extremely wrong. People most give a chance with a small period of time to blender and then people will understand why is a good software. Cheers
Dual SIM      Cache   Translate Page

Cache   Translate Page

image

image

MACRO (GET_CURRENT_YEAR RESULT)
   EXECUTE_PROCESS(COMMAND "cmd" " /C date /T" OUTPUT_VARIABLE ${RESULT})
   STRING(REGEX REPLACE ".*(..)/(..)/(....).*" "\\3" ${RESULT} ${${RESULT}})
ENDMACRO (GET_CURRENT_YEAR)

改为:

MACRO (GET_CURRENT_YEAR RESULT)
   EXECUTE_PROCESS(COMMAND "cmd" " /C date /T" OUTPUT_VARIABLE ${RESULT})
   STRING(REGEX REPLACE "\n" "" ${RESULT} ${${RESULT}})
   STRING(REGEX REPLACE ".*(..)/(..)/(....).*" "\\3" ${RESULT} ${${RESULT}})
ENDMACRO (GET_CURRENT_YEAR)

接下来打开 libnfc-1.7.1\libnfc 下面的 nfc-internal.c 文件,找到:res->allow_intrusive_scan = false;

image
Finish
image
image
image

PCRE_LIBRARIES 修改为 pcrelib 目录下面的 libpcre_dll.a

image

image

image
image

image
image

image

image

pacman -S mingw-w64-x86_64-gcc make automake mingw-w64-x86_64-gcc cmake git
image
image
image

LIBS=/mingw32/lib/libnfc.a ac_cv_header_endian_h=/sys/endian.h ./configure PKG_CONFIG=:
image

image

image

LIBS=/mingw32/lib/libnfc.a ac_cv_header_endian_h=/sys/endian.h make

image

image

I asked why not more automotive companies embrace open source. Abe feels the biggest problem is their lack of understanding of the licensing process. Open source is about taking and giving back. That can be daunting for many focused on bottom line return on investment (ROI). Mostly, certain carmakers feel more comfortable with an off-the-shelf product with a straightforward support system. Unfortunately, that is an expensive solution for the consumer. To do a good job, a mobility company needs to dedicate an entire team to open source.

How Open Source Can Make Mobility More Efficient & Lower Costs

Asked about Byton’s security philosophy, Abe feels most in the automotive industry rely on IT scripting and applies it to the auto industry. From his personal experience, it can’t always work well. It has to be part of a core, in-house automotive security foundation that is developed from a mobility standpoint. He used the analogy of how it’s one thing to hack into a phone or computer and lose data. It’s another thing when it comes to a car and human lives are at stake. Automotive security has to be part of the original design and not an afterthought. There is no such thing as 100% security, but you can put into place compensating technologies as well as redundant systems to come as close as possible to that.

  • Yosemite X announces first open-source public blockchain without native cryptocurrency

Businesses can reap the benefits of blockchain, without the risks commonly associated with cryptocurrencies

Yosemite X, a blockchain technology company, today announced the release of its open-source public blockchain that operates without a native cryptocurrency, giving developers and businesses the ability to build solutions and reduce costs, without the price volatility of crypto.

This approach enables companies to reap the benefits of blockchain – greater transparency, enhanced security, increased efficiency, speed of transactions at scale – and pay for their network usage with more stable fiat currencies.

While the idea of using the blockchain technology to cut down the cost of operation has intrigued many businesses, few have proved to be practical due to the technology’s reliance on volatile native cryptocurrency. Even those that have been implemented in enterprises are often based on permissioned blockchains, which are really a glorified centralized server system with shared access to the control room amongst agreed/pre-determined partners. With Yosemite Public Blockchain, which is designed to operate and transact with fiat-backed stablecoin, businesses can – for the first time on a public blockchain – accurately project their operating costs, which are expected to be significantly lower than other financial transaction systems.

  • Engineer Spotlight: Open Source Signal Integrity Engineering with Davi Correia and David Banas

Signal Integrity Engineers David Banas and Davi Correia share their thoughts on the future of electrical engineering, the freedom of giving code away for free, and the importance of professional curiosity.

The electrical engineering community is a tightknit group full of cooperation and support, and two great examples of that are David Banas and Davi Corriea. They've achieved a high level of success in their careers, but they also give back to their fellow engineers. Banas, of Haskware and eASIC, is the developer of PyBERT, an open-source serial communication link bit error rate tester, and Correia, of Carlisle Interconnect Technologies, developed many tools to automate parts of the product design process, increasing efficiency for his company and the EE community at large.

  • Should your company be open to open sourcing its software?

Developing software can be a long, expensive process for a company, yet there are many advantages to open sourcing, which may seem counterintuitive at first.

For Salesforce, sharing means a lot more than caring. In fact, last year, Salesforce announced that it was open sourcing the machine learning technology behind its Einstein AI platform.

“Three years ago when we set out to build machine learning capabilities into the Salesforce platform, we learned that building enterprise-scale machine learning systems is even harder,” stated Shubha Nabar, senior director of data science on the Salesforce Einstein team, in a detailed Medium post.

Nabar went on to explain why Salesforce decided to bring this project to the open source (OS) community stating, “Machine learning has the potential to transform how businesses operate, and we believe that barriers to adoption can only be lowered through an open exchange of ideas and code. By working in the open we can bring together diverse perspectives to continue to push the technology forward and make it accessible to everyone.”

  • The ‘Big Bang’ of Data Science and ML Tools

The tools used for data science are rapidly changing at the moment, according to Gartner, which said we’re in the midst of a “big bang” in its latest report on data science and machine learning platforms.

  • Databricks’ Recent $250 Mn Funding Shows How The Spark Creators Are Ahead In The AI Game

If there is one key takeaway from Databricks’ recent and much talked about $250 million funding — that there is a dramatic increase in venture financing of big data, cloud and AI technologies. In fact, analysts have pointed out that these three sectors — artificial intelligence, big data and cloud — have significantly exceeded valuation since the technology holds tremendous potential to transform a wide range of industries.

Ali Ghodsi and Matei Zaharia, inventors of Spark and the founders of Databricks, capitalised on the shifting nature of big data by providing a unified analytics platform. In fact, last week the San Francisco-based company saw another blockbuster funding round of  $250 million, which put Databricks’ valuation at $2.75 billion. Interestingly, the company that has been dubbed more “evolutionary rather than revolutionary” in terms of putting Spark in the cloud and also providing tools tailored for AI pipelines and multi-cloud environments has managed to stay current by keeping a pulse on where the market is heading and what customers required.

School Shooters: What's Their Path To Violence?       Cache   Translate Page

It's hard to empathize with someone who carries out a school shooting. The brutality of their crimes is unspeakable. Whether the shootings were at Columbine, at Sandy Hook, or in Parkland, they have traumatized students and communities across the U.S.

Psychologist John Van Dreal understands that. He is the director of safety and risk management at Salem-Keizer Public Schools in Oregon, a state that has had its share of school shootings. In 2014, about 60 miles from Salem, where Van Dreal is based, a 15-year-old boy shot one student and a teacher at his high school before killing himself.

"Someone went out of their way to target and kill children who look like our children, teachers who look like our teachers — and did it for no other reason than to hurt them," says Van Dreal. "And that's very personal."

Still, Van Dreal and other psychologists and law enforcement agents do spend a lot of time thinking about what it's like to be one of these school shooters, because, they say, that is key to prevention.

How many school shootings?

Tallying up all shootings and instances of school violence is difficult, researchers say; there's no official count, and various organizations differ in their definitions of school shootings.

For example, an open source database put together by Mother Jones suggests there have been 11 mass shootings (where four or more people died) in schools since the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado in 1999, and 134 children and adults died in those attacks.

Psychologists and law enforcement agencies have been analyzing how these sorts of multivictim attacks came to be, because of what they tell us about many other people who are at risk of becoming violent in schools and the ways we might intervene early, before anger becomes violence.

In the two decades since the Columbine High School shooting, researchers have learned a lot about school shooters. For one thing, many are themselves students, or former students, at the schools they attack. A significant majority tend to be teenagers or young adults.

"There's no one thing, [but] maybe a couple of dozen different things that come together to put someone on the path to committing an act of mass violence," says Peter Langman, a clinical psychologist in Allentown, Pa., and the author of two books and several studies about school shootings.

Multiple factors contribute in each case

Most shooters in these cases had led difficult lives, the studies find.

"Adolescent school shooters, there's no question that they're struggling and there have been multiple failures in their lives," says Reid Meloy, who is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego.

Many struggle with psychological problems, says Meloy, a forensic psychologist who also consults with the FBI.

"We know that mental health issues are very much in the mix," he says. "The child might be just, you know, very depressed. We also found in one of our early studies that you've got this curious combination of both depression and paranoia."

Studies by the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service have also found that many of the shooters were feeling desperate before the event.

"Whether or not they've been diagnosed, or whether or not they're severely mentally ill, something is going on that could [have been] addressed through some kind of treatment," says Langman.

But most never got that treatment.

The role of mental health problems

Mental health issues don't cause school shootings, Van Dreal emphasizes. After all, only a tiny, tiny percentage of kids with psychological issues go on to become school shooters.

But mental health problems are a risk factor, he says, because they can decrease one's ability to cope with other stresses. And studies have shown that most school shooters have led particularly stressful lives.

Many, though not all, of the perpetrators have experienced childhood traumas such as physical or emotional abuse, and unstable families, with violent, absent or alcoholic parents or siblings, for example. And most have experienced significant losses.

For example, the defendant in the case of the Parkland, Fla., shooting last year had lost his adopted mother to complications from the flu just a couple of months before the school attack. His adopted father had died when he was a little boy.

Feeling like an outcast at school may also play a role.

"A lot of these people have felt excluded, socially left out or rejected," says Van Dreal. Studies show that social rejection at school is associated with higher levels of anxiety, depression, aggression and antisocial behavior in children.

A 2004 study by the U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Department of Education found that nearly three-quarters of school shooters had been bullied or harassed at school.

Marginalized kids don't have anchors at school, says Van Dreal. "They don't have any adult connection — no one watching out for them. Or no one knows who they are anymore."

And the absence of social support at the school, Meloy says, is a big risk factor.

"People who do these kinds of targeted attacks don't feel very good about themselves, or where they're headed in their lives," says Van Dreal. "They may wish someone would kill them. Or they may wish they could kill themselves."

For example, Dylan Klebold, one of the perpetrators of the Columbine shooting, had been depressed and suicidal two years prior.

"About half of the school shooters I've studied have died by suicide in their attack," says Langman. "It's often a mix of severe depression and anguish and desperation driving them to end their own lives."

Of course, most people who feel suicidal don't kill others.

So what makes a small minority of kids who have mental health issues and thoughts of suicide turn to violence and homicide?

Meloy and Van Dreal think it's because these individuals had been struggling alone — either because they were unable to ask for help or their cries went unheard when the adults in their lives didn't realize the child needed support.

When despair turns to anger and a desire for revenge

When someone has been struggling alone for a while and failing, their despair can turn into anger, the researchers say.

"There's loss. There's humiliation. There's anger. There's blame," says Meloy.

That sort of anger can lead to homicidal thoughts, Van Dreal says.

They start out fantasizing about revenge, says Meloy.

"So the fantasy is one where the teenager starts to identify with other individuals who have become school shooters and have used violence as a way to solve their problem," he says.

These days, Meloy adds, it's easy for a troubled kid to go online and research how previous shooters planned and executed their attacks.

Easy access to guns — one of the biggest risk factors — then turns these fantasies into reality.

Psychologists say these attacks can be prevented — they are often weeks or months in the planning.

The keys to prevention are to spot the earliest behavioral signs that a student is struggling, Langman says, and also to watch for signs that someone may be veering toward violence.

Some signs can seem obvious in hindsight. "So, I've stopped being the kid who went to Boy Scouts, and church and loved his grandmother," Van Dreal says, "and now I want to be that kid with camouflage who's isolated and attacks people and hurts them."

But sometimes, even professionals who see the signs miss their significance.

About a year and a half before he attacked students at Columbine High School, Dylan Klebold, who was a gifted student, started to get into trouble.

He and some friends hacked into his school's computer system. Then, a couple of months later, he and his friend Eric Harris broke into a van and stole some equipment. They were arrested at that point and sent to a diversion program — an alternative to jail for first-time juvenile offenders — that offered counseling and required community service.

Sue Klebold, Dylan's mother and subsequent author of the book A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy, tells NPR she was upset and concerned to see the sudden change in her son's behavior. She says she asked the diversion counselor if his behavior meant something and whether he needed a therapist. The counselor asked Dylan, and Dylan said no.

Sue Klebold says she never realized how deep the problem was.

"The piece that I think I failed [in] is, we tend to underestimate the level of pain that someone may be in," Klebold tells NPR. "We all have a responsibility to stop and think — someone we love may be suffering, may be in a crisis."

Beware pitfalls in the search for a solution

The solution, according to psychologists who study kids who become violent, isn't to expel or suspend a student like Dylan — though that is what happened to him in the fall of 1997, after he hacked into his school's computer system.

A student like that who's expelled "can now be bored, can be isolated at home, can be living in a dysfunctional family, and can be ruminating and thinking all the time about how he's going to avenge what has happened to him," says Meloy.

Eric Harris, who was Dylan Klebold's friend and fellow killer that day at Columbine, didn't seem depressed; he was self-absorbed, lacked empathy and was prone to angry outbursts, according to those who analyzed his journals and earlier behavior.

While Klebold's journals were "full of loneliness and depression," Langman says, the writings of Harris were "full of narcissism and rage and rants against people — a lot of contempt."

Harris' contempt extended to himself. Significant surgeries during his early teen years to correct a birth condition contributed to self-loathing, Langman's study of Harris' journal suggests.

"I have always hated how I looked," Harris wrote in his journal. "That's where a lot of my hate grows from." In his last journal entry, Harris refers to himself as "the weird looking Eric KID."

"Anyone contemplating getting a gun and killing people needs to be seen as a person in crisis," says Langman. "And that's why it's so important to reach out and connect with that individual."

Time and time again, psychologists and educators have found that surrounding a young person with the right kind of support and supervision early on can turn most away from violence.

Connecting with these students, listening to them and supporting them, getting them the help they need, these researchers say, can help prevent future attacks and make schools a safer place for all children.

When I was sleepy      Cache   Translate Page

Back in 2005 I joined my first job, in a software company in Bangalore. It was a backend of a big foreign bank. We trained heavily on different parts of software development during the first few months. At the same time, I had an altercation with the senior manager (about some Java code) who was in charge of the new joinees and their placement within the company. The result? Everyone else got a team but me, and I had to roam around within the office to find an empty seat and wait there till the actual seat owner came back. I managed to spend a lot of days in the cafeteria on the rooftop. But, then they made new rules that one can not sit there either, other than at lunch time.

So, I went asking around, talking to all the different people in the office (there were 500+ folks iirc) if they know any team who would take on a fresher. I tried to throw in words like Linux, open source to better my chances. And then one day, I heard that the research and development team was looking for someone with Linux and PHP skills. I went in to have a chat with the team, and they told me the problem (it was actually on DSpace, a Java based documentation/content repository system), and after looking at my resume decided to give me a desktop for couple of weeks. I managed to solve the problem in next few days, and after a week or so, I was told that I will join the team. There were couple of super senior managers and I was the only kid on that block. Being part of this team allowed me to explore different technologies and programming languages.

I will later write down my experiences in more detail, but for today, I want to focus on one particular incident. The kind of incident, which all system administrators experience at least once in their life (I guess). I got root access to the production server of the DSpace installation within a few weeks. I had a Windows desktop, and used putty to ssh in to the server. As this company was backend of the big bank, except for a few senior managers, no one else had access to Internet on their systems. There were 2 desktops in the kiosk in the ground floor, and one had to stand in a long queue to get a chance to access Internet.

One day I came back from the lunch (a good one), and was feeling a bit sleepy. I had taken down the tomcat server, pushed the changes to the application, and then wanted to start the server up again. Typed the whole path to startup.sh (I don’t remember the actual name, I’m just guessing it was startup.sh) and hit Enter. I was waiting for the long screens of messages this startup script spewed as it started up, but instead, I got back the prompt quickly. I was wondering what went wrong. Then, looking at the monitor very closely, I suddenly realised that I was planning to delete some other file and I had written rm at the beginning of the command prompt, forgotten it, and then typed the path of the startup.sh. Suddenly I felt the place get very hot and stuffy; I started sweating and all blood drained from my face in the next few moments. I was at panic level 9. I was wondering what to do. I thought about the next steps to follow. I still had a small window of time to fix the service. Suddenly I realized that I can get a copy of the script from the Internet (yay, Open Source!). So, I picked up a pad and a pen, ran down to the ground floor, and stood in the queue to get access to a computer with Internet. After getting the seat, I started writing down the whole startup.sh on the pad and double checked it. Ran right back up to my cubicle, feverishly typed in the script, (somehow miraculously without any typo in one go.) As I executed the script, I saw the familiar output, messages scrolling up, screen after joyful screen. And finally as it started up, I sighed a huge sigh of relief. And after the adrenalin levels came down, I wrote an incident report to my management, and later talked about it during a meeting.

From that day on, before doing any kind of destructive operation, I double check the command prompt for any typo. I make sure, that I don’t remove anything randomly and also make sure that I have my backups is place.

The easiest and most cost-effective approach would be to find something that already exists (either as an Access template or a commercial product or an open source product) and tweak it if necessary.

If you tell us more about what you need the database to do we might have some specific suggestions. In the meantime, here are some Access templates:

The first two lists are from Microsoft:

10 Best Free Linux Synthesizers      Cache   Translate Page

A software synthesizer, also known as a softsynth, is computer software which creates digital audio. Computer software that generates music is not a recent arrival. However, with processors that offer multiple cores and faster clock speeds, software synthesizers can complete tasks that previously needed dedicated hardware. The advantage, of course, of software synthesizers is that they are less expensive than dedicated hardware, and simpler to integrate with other types of music software.

Synthesizers are often controlled with a piano-style keyboard. Several other forms of controller have been developed to mimic guitars, organs, stringed and wind instruments. A real analog synthesizer has a lot of knobs and switches which give immediate access to all important parameters of the generated sound.

Linux has a good range of open source software to be a serious contender in music production without having to venture into the commercial software world. Some of the software featured in this article provide operation similar to analog synths from the 1970s, such as the Moog Minimoog and Roland Juno-60.

  • Google open sources ClusterFuzz, a scalable fuzzing tool

Google made its scalable fuzzing tool, called ClusterFuzz available as open source, yesterday. ClusterFuzz is used by Google for fuzzing the Chrome Browser, a technique that helps detect bugs in software by feeding unexpected inputs to a target program. For fuzzing to be effective, it should be continuous, done at scale, and integrated into the development process of a software project.

ClusterFuzz can run on clusters with over 25,000 machines and can effectively highlight security and stability issues in software. It serves as the fuzzing backend for OSS-Fuzz, a service that Google released back in 2016. ClusterFuzz was earlier offered as free service to open source projects through OSS-Fuzz but is now available for anyone to use.

  • Video: OpenHPC Update

In this talk I want to give an introduction about the OpenHPC project. Why do we need something like OpenHPC? What are the goals of OpenHPC? Who is involved in OpenHPC and how is the project organized? What is the actual result of the OpenHPC project? It also has been some time (it was FOSDEM 2016) since OpenHPC was part of the HPC, Big Data and Data Science devroom, so that it seems a good opportunity for an OpenHPC status update and what has happened in the last three years. In addition to previous mentioned topics I would also like to give an outlook about upcoming releases and plans for the future.”

If you missed out on last weekend's FOSDEM event for your fix of Linux technical talks or are just looking for a Linux/open-source event taking place in the beautiful Scandinavia, FOSS-North is coming up now in less than two months.

FOSS-North 2019 is running from 7 to 10 April in Gothenburg, Sweden. While I haven't attended this event personally, many Phoronix readers have and encouraged mentioning this year's event.

K4NT 4.1.1 (1813030025) Firstly sincere apologies for my complete lack of knowledge (i.e zero) regarding writing scripts! I have searched the forum and open source for some help and i have seem similar threads and have tried to cobble something together for several weeks already! PROJECT ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am looking to use a K4NT to display a random black & white line drawn comic strip which will change one or twice daily (and work on battery alone). I currently have a jailbroken K4NT with the screensavers hack and basically I am trying to write a script that will just do the same as a human pressing the power button twice at a set time during the day (thus changing the screensaver to another random image before going to sleep again). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have been trying to use/adapt parts of other contributors scripts such as those by peterson and _nico https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=235821&page=3 where _nico is managing to get the following results with his Kindle KT3 on a single charge "57 eips updates a day, 30-35 days". I have also poured over the onlinescreensavers hack and the kindle weather display and https://www.linux.com/learn/wake-linux-rtc-alarm-clock%20 As a test I have been trying to set the K4NT to wake using the RTC (RTC1 as there is no wakealarm in RTC0) to wakeup after 100 seconds have lapsed using the code below which I start via the CLI when connected to the K4NT via SSH. Code: --------- #!/bin/bash lipc-set-prop com.lab126.cmd wirelessEnable 0 echo Current Time : `date` `date +%s` ENDWAIT=$(( `date +%s` + 100 )) echo Wake Up Time : $ENDWAIT echo 0 > /sys/class/rtc/rtc1/wakealarm echo Readback time: `cat /sys/class/rtc/rtc1/wakealarm` echo $ENDWAIT > /sys/class/rtc/rtc1/wakealarm lipc-wait-event -mt com.lab126.powerd '*' --------- This produces these results but doesn't seem to wake the Kindle back up. I also found that following command will carry out a simulated press of the power button on the K4NT. Code: --------- lipc-send-event com.lab126.powerd.debug dbg_power_button_pressed --------- Any help/advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Over at Argonne, Nils Heinonen writes that Researchers are using the open source Singularity framework as a kind of Rosetta Stone for running supercomputing code almost anywhere. "Once a containerized workflow is defined, its image can be snapshotted, archived, and preserved for future use. The snapshot itself represents a boon for scientific provenance by detailing the exact conditions under which given data were generated: in theory, by providing the machine, the software stack, and the parameters, one’s work can be completely reproduced."

What do you do with the glycerin? ---- My first choice would be car and tractor fuel. Initial tests show that it is more flammable than diesel fuel. We are currently developing an open source steam engine construction set. We hope to use the glycerine with a Babington burner - and power LifeTrac and other steam power devices. This means our biodiesel reaction would have 100% fuel yields. Yesterday we got 20% glycerine and 80% diesel yields. We are also considering soap and detergent production. Right now we are saving this gold in containers, until future testing with the Babington burner. Any comments on suitability with the Babington?
