Science Round-up: Data visualization literacy, adding art and design to STEM, dieting mosquitoes      Cache   Translate Page

The Proceedings of the National Academies of Science has an entire issue focused on two of my favorite topics: The overlap of science and creativity, and the value of citizen science. And, appropriately enough, most of these articles are available in full, so I would encourage you to head over and explore.

Here are some samplers:

Creativity and collaboration: Revisiting cybernetic serendipity

Abraham Lincoln founded the US National Academy of Sciences in 1863 by way of an Act of Congress. The National Academy of Sciences Congressional Charter stipulated a nongovernmental advisory organization of scholars whose role was to “investigate, examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art.”

That charter, which combined “science and art” came at a time in which those disciplines were seen as closely related, maybe still infused with the spirit of Renaissance thinkers, such as Leonardo da Vinci, whose brilliant integration of art, design, science, and engineering produced astonishing breakthroughs and bold creations that have endured for 500 y. Leonardo’s training as an artist enabled him to make more accurate medical drawings, see the movement of bird wings, understand the dynamics of flowing water, and much more.

Citizen science frontiers: Efficiency, engagement, and serendipitous discovery

Citizen science has proved to be a unique and effective tool in helping science and society cope with the ever-growing data rates and volumes that characterize the modern research landscape. It also serves a critical role in engaging the public with research in a direct, authentic fashion and by doing so promotes a better understanding of the processes of science. To take full advantage of the onslaught of data being experienced across the disciplines, it is essential that citizen science platforms leverage the complementary strengths of humans and machines. This Perspectives piece explores the issues encountered in designing human–machine systems optimized for both efficiency and volunteer engagement, while striving to safeguard and encourage opportunities for serendipitous discovery. We discuss case studies from Zooniverse, a large online citizen science platform, and show that combining human and machine classifications can efficiently produce results superior to those of either one alone and how smart task allocation can lead to further efficiencies in the system.

Before we pop below the line, I want to give a shout out to the Daily Bucket, Dawn Chorus, and all the other citizen science activities that take place on Daily Kos on a regular basis. Good on you, people. Also, I love Zooniverse and am a regular participant. I’ve spoken with the folks there several times about focusing some of DK’s energy on their site, and I certainly intend to do just that in the near future.

Some of the biggest challenges our society faces are related to climate change and the impact this will have on the environment and on our own activities. The increasing concentration of the greenhouse gases is a prominent driver of a changing climate, but the extent of their impacts is sector dependent and generally more difficult to characterise. In order to build a climate proof society, we need to improve the way in which climate datasets are processed and used to inform decisions in different businesses and societal sectors. The Copernicus climate change service (C3S) has been developed to meet these needs, aiming at supporting policymakers, businesses and citizens through the provision of high-quality usable information. The Service consolidates many years of preparatory research and development and delivers through the Climate data store a long list of quality-controlled and operationally-produced climate relevant datasets. This ITT is about setting up and demonstrating downstream applications, known as “Demo-Cases”, using one or more of the C3S products as input. It aims at demonstrating the full potential of the C3S infrastructure, including the diverse set of datasets in the CDS catalogue and the CDS toolbox. This ITT will facilitate the creation of indicators, tools and visualisations that do not necessarily have a sustainable business case, but are excellent communication tools and will show-case the CDS and, hence, increase uptake. ECMWF expects that individual bids in the range between 50 000 and 150 000 EUR will be adequate to achieve the objectives of this call, depending on the scope of the proposed demo case. Nevertheless, ECMWF may consider bids outside of that range if duly justified by the bidder. The ITT call is open to all demo-cases addressing any societal sector and C3S products. Notwithstanding the above, ECMWF is looking forward selecting a number of proposals related to data visualization and scientific communication through the arts, as they offer a strong potential to enhance the uptake of the C3S service with wide communities. Please see Volume I (Instructions and Conditions) of the ITT documents Please see Volume V (Contract for Procurement - Services for Copernicus) of the ITT documents ECMWF will only enter into a contract with a single legal person/entity. Due to the need to include performance and compliance obligations in the contract, ECMWF will contract only with a single legal person or entity which is competent to undertake and commit to these obligations. ECMWF recognises that some bids will involve a number of organisations which may wish to work together to deliver the contract requirements. In such cases, these organisations must identify a lead contractor who will sign the contract with ECMWF and who will be responsible for putting in place legal arrangements to ensure that it can guarantee that all other organisations will also meet the contract obligations. ECMWF will not enter into multiple contracts with individual members of consortia or groups of service providers. See Volume V (Contract for procurement — Services for Copernicus) and Volume II (Specification) of the ITT documents. Tenders will not be eligible unless they are submitted by persons or entities based or registered in a member state of the EU or in a member state of ECMWF. Bidders will be informed about the outcome of the evaluation within six weeks following each closing date. Reminders on the evaluation dates will be posted on the C3S website (https://climate.copernicus.eu/) at regular points in time. As an outcome of each quarterly evaluation, bids will be either selected for negotiations in that round, rejected, or included in a reserve list for future consideration. 6 weeks upon each evaluation date, ECMWF will update the C3S website with an overview of the sectors and C3S products for which a use-case has been selected.           Menteri Jonan Incar Investasi Energi Terbarukan USD 1,9 Miliar      Cache   Translate Page

SpeedTree Games Indie 8.3.0 | 494.6 mb
IDV, Inc is pleased to announce the availability of SpeedTree Games Indie 8.3.0. SpeedTree for Games is an Award-winning 3D Procedural vegetation middleware product with fine-tuned art controls.  Includes Modeler, Compiler, Tree Library and full-source SDK.

What's new in 8.3.0:

New Features
- New release: SpeedTree Games Unity Subscription
8.3.0 marks the first time SpeedTree v8 for Unity has been made publicly available.
- New product: SpeedTree Games Indie
SpeedTree Games is now available with features from our top end modeler at a lower price. FBX/OBJ export, photogrammetry tools, and the full power of SpeedTree integrations at indie pricing.
- EULA changes
Revenue caps have been added to several product offerings as shown below:
. SpeedTree Subscription ($19/month): Limited to studios/teams with yearly revenue under $100K
. SpeedTree Indie ($999/year): Limited to studios/teams with yearly revenue under $1M
. SpeedTree Full License (Per title/platform): For UE4 custom licensees, studios requiring a site license, or with a yearly revenue of over $1M
- "Lock to Parent" added to Mesh generators
This option, when checked, forces meshes placed on branches to fit themselves to the length of the branch. Uncheck this option to allow variable sizes.
- "Flip normals on backside" application preference
When this option is not enabled, the backsides of two-sided materials are rendered with flipped normals in order to be more compliant with PBR rendering. This can result in jarring lighting on some models. This application preference has been added to control this behavior and will be used during billboard rendering.
Bug Fixes
- [CRASH] Growth export
A bug that caused crashes on a subset of models during animated growth exports has been fixed.
- Orphaned generators
Models saved from earlier releases could have deleted generators present but not visible in the Generation Editor. This situation caused errors in generator layout and has been fixed.
- Materials in XML exports
A bug has been fixed that was preventing material information from being saved in XML exports.
- Leaf reference material IDs in XML exports
A bug has been fixed that was preventing leaf reference material IDs from being updated in unwrapped XML exports.

Power BI – Fixing Dates from Sharepoint Lists (converting UTC Dates to Local Dates)      Cache   Translate Page

Originally posted on: http://tostringtheory.com/archive/2019/02/01/power-bi-ndash-fixing-dates-from-sharepoint-lists-converting-utc.aspx

So the problem below was in relation to working with dates from a Sharepoint 2013 List, but the same technique should be applicable any time you want to convert UTC/GMT datetime fields to a local time.

When Sharepoint exposes datetime values from lists using its REST API it converts them to the UTC timezone. I suppose a lot of the time this makes sense, specially if you are dealing with data entry across multiple time zones. But if you are just working in a single timezone this can be frustrating to deal with. The with bringing this data into Power BI is that the column in Power BI does not get tagged as being UTC which can lead you to think that something has gone wrong. Because if your are in any timezone other than GMT you will see dates/times being offset when you bring them in to Power BI. I live in UTC+10 so this effect is quite marked often shifting dates back to the prior day.

If you look at the data from the Webservice calls to Sharepoint you can see that it’s returning the dates in UTC format, not as they were entered in the UI. The images below show you an example of this.

1. Is the data visible in the Sharepoint list

image

2. Is the data coming from the Sharepoint Webservice API ( the trailing ‘Z’ indicates that this date/time is now in UTC) and you can see that 11 hours have been subtracted from time (the date used above is during daylight savings in my local timezone which is 11 hours ahead of UTC)

image

3. Show how the data appears in Power BI, which is how it was sourced from the Sharepoint REST API.

image

To fix this so that you can view the dates in the local timezone we can go into the query in Power BI and do the following:

1. Click on the date column and then in the “Transform” tab click on the DataType setting and change this to “Date/Time/Timezone” – this will correctly tag the column as being in UTC+00:00

image

2. Then in the “Add Column” ribbon click on the “Custom Column” option and give this new column a name like “TxnDateLocal” and then enter the following formula where the text in red is the name of the column from sharepoint that we changed the type of in step 1

= DateTimeZone.ToLocal( [TxnDate] )

image

3. Repeat the above for each DateTime column and then use the “local” versions of these column in your model. It’s probably also a good idea to go back and delete the original version of these columns from the query after we have added the new local versions to prevent them being used accidentally.
