COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With two starters out and another not feeling well, and each team favored in five bouts apiece, something had to give somewhere.

Penn State didn't waste any time waiting to see how it would all unfold, as Roman Bravo-Young and Nick Lee scored back-to-back, match-opening upset victories which sparked the No. 1 Nittany Lions to an easier-than-expected 28-9 victory over No. 6 Ohio State Friday night before nearly 13,276 fans in St. John Arena.

If ever a team proved it was No. 1 and virtually unbeatable, the Lions were it. In each of their seven bouts pitting ranked wrestler against ranked wrestler, including two ranked higher, Penn State was the winner.

"We believe in our guys, obviously, but, yeah, they wrestled a great match," Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said outside the locker room after Penn State's 56th straight dual meet victory. "We've got a lot of matches left. This was a great atmosphere but we're happy with the way our guys came in and wrestled today," for sure.

Ohio State coach Tom Ryan was pretty stunned and said Penn State's first two wins took energy out of the Buckeye team. "No, I didn't envision it going this way, I thought we were ready to win,'' he said. "We thought we were. What we thought and what happened tonight were tragically different. I did not think that this would happen.''

MEN OF THE MATCH: Pretty much everyone but Bravo-Young and Lee were the obvious heroes. Bravo-Young's apparent strategy was to make No. 6 Luke Pletcher shoot, which Pletcher did just once. And he almost made it count in the opening overtime period when he put Bravo-Young high in the air but was unable to stop an extremely athletic shoulder roll to freedom by Bravo-Young.

Bravo-Young escaped in six seconds and then had to ride out Pletcher to win. Pletcher's known for his mat wrestling but Bravo-Young rode for the first eight seconds before going out of bounds. He then took a stalling warning by hanging on Pletcher's legs which stopped the clock with eight seconds left. He completed the ride for the win but too enthusiastically slammed his headgear to the mat and caused Penn State to lose a team point.

"He has a lot of talent and he works hard and he's been grinding every day trying to get better and it's starting to pay off for him," Penn State's Jason Nolf said about Bravo-Young.

Sanderson thought Bravo-Young was playing things a little cautious because of his knee injury. "But he can win close matches, he's a tough kid. Great competition tonight and we're happy with our guys' effort,'' Sanderson said about Bravo-Young and the team in general.

Lee trailed 5-2 after two periods against No. 2 Joey McKenna but escaped in the third and took down McKenna just four seconds later. Sensing McKenna, now 14-1, was tiring, Lee cut him free and maintained pressure on McKenna's legs, scooting around off an initial single-leg shot for the winning takedown with 33 seconds left and completing the ride for a 7-6 win.

"I think everyone was yelling on our bench to cut him; he needed to get another takedown," Sanderson said.

TURNING POINT: Bo Nickal's fall wasn't the turning point, it was the exclamation point. He fended off two semi-decent shots from No. 2 Kollin Moore before striking with a single-leg and immediately slapping on a tight overhead cradle and ultimately adjusting his own position to flatten Moore.

"Bo always expects to pin his guys which is a great mentality," Nolf said. "He went out and did what he wanted to do and that's Bo."

Sanderson agreed. "He was ready to go,'' Sanderson said about Nickal. "Bo's a big-match guy and all of our guys...this was a big match for them and they wanted to wrestle well and they did.''

Not surprisingly, as coaches do for their own team, Ohio State's Ryan saw things a bit differently. "That's guy's a pinner," Ryan said about Nickal. "One of the top pinners that program's ever had. "Would I sound silly to say that Kollin Moore can win that match four or five or six weeks from now? I don't think that's silly at all. He got caught and we just have to learn from it and move on.''

BIGGEST SURPRISE: That the Buckeyes not only lost the first two but that Ohio State's Joey McKenna gassed in the third period. He was returning from injury and Ryan said McKenna was a little heavy and his weight cut was bigger than he wanted it to be. "When you wrestle somebody and even though it seems seven minutes isn't that long...when you wrestle somebody who makes you fight for every morsel, you can break down. And you saw Joey as the match went on, he broke down,'' Ryan said.

WHAT WE LEARNED: Name the last team you've seen that can deliver in the clutch better than this Penn State squad. Even Ryan heaped praise on the Lions. "This is one of the great teams,'' Ryan said about the Lions. "I've been in sports for a long time and they have four guys on that team ... they're four of the best college wrestlers that I've seen in the last 25 years. Credit to them. Nolf. Nickal. Vincenzo. Mark Hall. These are all guys who are really at an elite level. This is a really good team (Ohio State) and that (Penn State) was a special team.''

THEY SAID IT:

-- "No. We had to hold our ground in the five weights that we were favored and we didn't hold our ground. The smallest things make the biggest differences. When you land somebody, you've got to be ready for them to pull you up off their hips. That was a tough first one. The team knew we needed that and it took a little bit of energy out of us and the crowd.''--Ohio State coach Tom Ryan on 133-pounder Luke Pletcher allowing Roman Bravo-Young to roll out of his takedown attempt in overtime.

--"Roman's a tough kid. I think he's still in that stage where he' realizing how good he is and his potential. This should be great for his confidence.'' - Penn State coach Cael Sanderson on Roman Bravo-Young

NOTES: Eight of Friday night's 20 wrestlers - four from each team, actually - are among the top 14 in Flo's PFP (pound for pound) rankings. That alone made this dual meet the country's most significant of the season. ... The crowd of 13,276 was a St. John Arena record for wrestling. ...

I am wondering their treatment of customers is based on how well they value the customer...

I have a feeling that this is what determines what happens when things go bad.

Yep, apparently we all have a customer’s lifetime value score.

https://bgr.com/2018/11/04/secret-custo ... treatment/

Most large firms have been trying to determine customer lifetime value, the net present value of a specific customer to a firm, for at least a decade now. It actually makes great business sense. You should go more out of your way to help a customer that's worth $10k to you than one that's worth $10, and the difference can easily be that great.

On a related note, a study done about 15 years ago showed that many customers who remain with a firm for long periods of time are actually not profitable at all. Hence, customer "loyalty" isn't all that it's cracked up to be, and tracking customers' value can be highly useful, as many firms have now discovered.

That being said, firms still have an ethical obligation to treat all of their customers well.

Croswell Opera House Stages One-woman Play AGLIO E OLIO in Blissfield Home      Cache   Translate Page

The Blissfield home of Frank and Brenda Baker will be the site of an immersive theater experience produced by the Croswell Opera House this weekend.

A one-woman play titled AGLIO E OLIO will be staged in the Bakers' kitchen Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 14-17. In the play, the narrator tells the story of her father's final days while preparing the food that was an integral part of her upbringing in an Italian family.

The semi-autobiographical play was first developed by actress Meg Persichetti and film director Laura Gilkey, who is an Adrian native now living in New Jersey. In the Croswell's production, the character originated by Persichetti is played by Maria Portaro-Mohler of Lambertville. The play is directed by John MacNaughton.

"It's an intimate remembering of the events surrounding her father's passing," MacNaughton said.

The play aims to create a sense of community among the people who attend by having them sample the dishes prepared by the narrator at the end of the show.

"Food brings people together," Portaro-Mohler said. "Even if you have nothing in common, you now have something in common because you're sharing this meal."

Because the play ties the narrator's childhood memories together with the story of her father's death, Portaro-Mohler said she hopes the play pushes viewers to remember the good times they had with people they have lost in their own lives.

Setting the play in a kitchen is a reminder, MacNaughton said, that theater takes many forms.

"Theater doesn't have to happen in a building with a proscenium and a curtain," he said.

"Aglio e Olio" runs from Feb 14-17, with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. and a Sunday performance at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 each and must be purchased in advance, and directions to the home will be provided at time of purchase.

To purchase tickets or for more information, go to croswell.org or call 517-264-7469.

Global CPGs embrace transformative Loop circular shopping platform      Cache   Translate Page
A metal container for Häagen-Dazs ice cream keeps contents frozen.
With reusable packaging as its foundation, the ground-breaking Loop shopping platform enables zero waste, unleashes packaging innovation, and enhances consumer convenience.

In late February at the World Economic Forum, in Davos, Switzerland, Tom Szaky, Founder and CEO of TerraCycle, Inc., unveiled what could be one of the most significant and disruptive advances in packaging to date. Along with a number of the world’s largest Consumer Packaged Goods companies and retailers, TerraCycle has created Loop™, a first-of-its-kind shopping platform that will enable consumers to responsibly consume products in customized, brand-specific, durable packaging that is collected, cleaned, refilled, and reused.

The platform will launch in France and in the northeastern U.S. this spring as a pilot, offering more than 300 products in reusable packaging from such heavy-hitters as Procter & Gamble, Nestlé, Unilever, PepsiCo, Mondelēz International, and Danone, to name a few, as well as from smaller companies. The products will be available through the Loop e-commerce site as well as through retail partners’ e-commerce sites and brick-and-mortar locations.

The Loop platform is designed to transform the relationship between consumers and packaging, with the consumer now borrowing the package from the brand owner, much like the milkman model. Through its circular system, Loop offers the convenience of single-use packaging while at the same time removing the responsibility from the consumer of disposing the empty packaging. It gets to the root of packaging waste, rather than trying to manage waste through recycling and other methods after it’s been created.

Loop is also proving to have an extraordinary effect on package design. “It’s not just about eliminating waste; it’s about enabling the future,” says Szaky. “What brands have really started to see is that this is a platform through which they can commercialize innovation in packaging that was never possible in a disposable package—it was not even conceivable.”

Metal containers for Häagen-Dazs ice cream that keep contents cold, toothbrushes with removable, replaceable heads from Oral B, and a stainless-steel Clorox package that keeps wipes wetter longer are just some of the innovations created for Loop. Enhancing the consumer experience, reimagined packaging for products such as Pantene, Seventh Generation, and Crest transform the products into premium, luxury items.

A vision for a world without waste

For 15 years, recycling company TerraCycle has promoted and advanced the idea of a world without waste. It offers a range of free programs for the collection and recycling of hard-to-recycle materials, creating new products from the waste. Its most recent project was to establish the world’s largest supply chain for collecting and recycling ocean plastics, which are used by P&G for its Head & Shoulders haircare product bottles and its Fairy dish soap containers, as well as for packaging for Unilever’s prestige REN Clean Skincare line.

While these efforts are critically important, Szaky says they are not enough to reach the goal of a world without waste. Hence, TerraCycle created Loop—a circular economy shopping platform whose time has come. “It was far less difficult than I thought it would be to get CPGs and retailers to invest in the platform,” he shares. “It’s like the world is ready for it.”

Szaky says he believes there were three factors that influenced the decision by CPGs to participate, even though it involved a complicated and expensive commitment. First was their trust in TerraCycle, built through longstanding relationships. “They knew we were not just a ‘fly-by-night’ operation,” he says.

Second was the packaging crisis brought on by the issue of ocean plastics—a topic that didn’t exist three or four years ago. “People always cared about waste, but it’s more of a crisis now,” Szaky says. “And companies at their board levels are declaring it as a crisis in a way that’s never been done. In addition, there’s also a lot of legislation in the pipeline around anti-disposability [of packaging].”

The third factor, as mentioned earlier, was brand owners’ realization of the functional and aesthetic innovation opportunities afforded by reusable packaging. “What packaging people love about this is that now it’s not a race to the bottom on a price per unit, which it sort of was before. It was always how to make the pack cheaper,” says Szaky. “With Loop, cost is not the primary question. The primary question is, how durable is it?”

Design for reuse

To enter Loop as a manufacturer, the first “rule,” Szaky explains, is that you must move to a reusable package—“that’s simply not negotiable,” he adds.

Each CPG partner is responsible for their own package design, aided by guidelines and best practices developed by TerraCycle and logistics partner UPS. Through testing procedures conducted at its Package Design and Test Lab in Addison, IL, UPS identified solutions to issues related to shipping primary packaging via e-commerce. TerraCycle enumerates some of these suggestions in a design brief it provides brand owner partners when they sign on to Loop.

What TerraCycle looks for in a finished package design is durability, cleanability, and a positive Life Cycle Analysis. “Those are the three things we watch for,” says Szaky. “But then everyone gets to do everything they could ever want to in a pack. You get a far greater range of design choices, because you’re not restricted to a tiny little price. So, a $1 package with 10 uses is 10 cents per use, but a $5 package with 100 uses is 5 cents per use. That’s actually pretty neat in the sense of being able to change the relationship with the economics of packaging.”

The goal for a Loop package is to be able to withstand 100-plus uses, which is not such a stretch if you consider how many times a consumer might refill a reusable water bottle. “Here’s the point,” says Szaky, “once you get to 100 uses, it’s actually not that hard to get into the thousands. It’s hard to know, because we haven’t been able to prove 10,000 uses. For now, we’re aiming for 100 or more uses for every container.”

The three most common types of materials being used for Loop packaging are, in order, stainless steel and aluminum, glass, and engineered plastics such as polycarbonate. So far, materials such as flexibles, disposable plastics, fibers, or leathers have not shown up in any Loop packaging.

Given that the aim of Loop is zero waste, the tote in which products are delivered and empty containers are returned is also reusable.

Consumer convenience

Another factor that makes Loop so timely is consumers’ growing acceptance and use of e-commerce for CPG products. Loop will have its own e-commerce sites—Loopstore.com in the U.S. and maboutiquelook.fr in France—and Loop products will also be available on some CPG and retail partner websites.

Retail partners such as Carrefour in France, Tesco in the U.K., and others will also be selling Loop products in their physical stores. In fact, Carrefour is so enthusiastic about the system it has put many of its private-label products into reusable packages.

In the case of products ordered through e-commerce, the “loop” begins when a consumer places an order online. Their products are then delivered to their doorstep in the reusable Loop tote. When they are done with a product, the consumer places the empty package in one of the totes and alerts Loop to pick it up. (Both products ordered through Loop as well as through its partners’ sites are collected by Loop.) For staple products the consumer wants replenished immediately, the pickup triggers a new shipment.

Consumers who purchase Loop products at a brick-and-mortar store can bring their empties directly back to the store.

The beauty of the program at end of use is that consumers don’t have to clean or sort the empties. “It’s a completely disposable experience,” says Szaky. Sorting and cleaning is done by TerraCycle, which not only has the technology for straightforward cleaning jobs (e.g., cleaning rigid containers), but is also developing a range of technologies to handle more complex packaging components such as trigger sprayers and pumps. The company plans to have a warehousing and cleaning facility in every region in which Loop products are sold.

With Loop, zero waste also means zero product waste. So when TerraCycle receives the containers for cleaning, it evaluates the leftover or used product to see if it can be recovered or recycled. Products are categorized as non-recoverable, as in the case of orange juice or window cleaner, or recoverable. “For recovery, there are two types of products,” Szaky explains. “The first is a product you can recover, but it would be unreasonable to reuse it, such as a razor blade or a toothbrush, which we then recycle. The other is a product, such as the casing of a pen, that it’s not unreasonable to reuse.”

The final stage of the loop is the return of empty, clean packages to brand owners for refilling. The loop is closed when consumers receive new products.

To ensure consumers return the empty packaging and the Loop totes, they pay a deposit for the items when they order the products. “This is key, since these are expensive packages,” says Szaky. “They are never owned by the consumer; the consumer borrows them. And, like anything you borrow, you put a deposit around it.”

When the consumer returns the package, they receive 100% of the deposit back—no matter the shape in which they return it. TerraCycle’s view is that the durability of the package is not the consumer’s responsibility; it’s the responsibility of those who made it.

Will Loop succeed?

There are many reasons Loop should succeed—and in a big way. Among them, the furor over disposable, single-use packaging, the ease of e-commerce, the enhanced consumer experience allowed through higher-quality packaging, and Loop’s appeal to CPGs that are pushing to meet their own aggressive sustainable packaging goals. But will it take off?

Szaky says signs are good. As more of the world’s largest CPGs join the platform, momentum is building, spurring others to join or be left behind. In just one week, he shares, SC Johnson with its Method and Ecover brands, global snacking company Pladis, and Reckitt Benckiser signed on. “And it wasn’t even a unique week,” he says.

Another sign boding well for Loop is the response it has received from the 25 families in New York and the 25 in Paris that have already trialed the platform. Szaky says TerraCycle learned from these trials that once consumers start receiving their products in reusable packaging, they start getting “allergic” to disposability. “The question is, what is the tipping point?” he questions. “Do 20 percent of the products in your life have to be durable for you to say, ‘Forget disposability, I’m done.’”

Compared with other strategies launched to reduce or eliminate packaging waste, such as “package-free” stores and self-dispensing systems, Loop celebrates packaging, enhancing its many functions, such as beauty, product protection, and convenience.

“Packaging isn’t evil,” declares Szaky. “Neither is the idea of plastic or metal or paper. The evil, I think, is spending a lot of effort creating something awesome and then using it once and throwing it away.”

Large Dichroic Glass Vortex Marble intense Wig Wag Illusion Orb Spiral Aqua Blue by Tim Mazet by VortexGlassWorks      Cache   Translate Page

155.00 USD

Large Dichroic Glass optical illusion 'Wig Wag' Vortex Marble
Lampworked (flameworked) with durable Borosilicate (Pyrex) Glass
  made by Timothy Mazet

SIZE:
1.85 inches (47.2mm) Diameter!

This intense " Wig Wag" Vortex Marble features 'Rainbow Gold' Dichroic Glass with bright bands in opaque color in Cobalt blue, Aqua, White and Black. The bands change direction two times ( "wig wag" ) before spiraling off into infinity.

The dichroic colors sparkle and change colors when viewed from an angle! The camera can not capture the luminosity of the dichroic glass, so the colors are much brighter and richer in person.
The back of this marble has a blue under-water like pattern.

There is an amazing depth to this marble, the vortex seems to go WAY beyond the back of the marble.  You must see this in person to fully appreciate this optical illusion.

This marble is perfectly round and smooth.
KILN ANNEALED overnight for Maximum durability.
signed and dated on the side: MAZET 18
This Marble comes with an acrylic stand.

Glass marbles can be displayed anywhere, even under water in a aquarium! This marble can also be used as a meditation tool. Much like a mandala, gazing into the vortex is a great way to relax or focus the mind and "unwind" some of the pressures of Time and Space.
-all other items combined to this purchase ship for free!

THIS PIECE SPARKLES IN THE LIGHT AND LOOKS EVEN BETTER THAN THE PICTURE, %100 MONEY BACK GUARANTEE.
NOTE: The Photos are enlarged to show the details and colors, please see the actual size above.

"There's A Lot Of Big Stuff Going On Right Now" - Observations On The "Purely Absurd" Markets      Cache   Translate Page

Authored by Jeffrey Snider via Alhambra Investment Partners,

Big Things: The Hoard Gets Bigger

I’ve observed a lot that’s purely absurd the last eleven years, trying hard to write up as much of it as I can. It’s worth the effort in terms of education but also to reveal what’s really going on. The catalog is too long to republish here in its entirety.

One of the most ridiculous anecdotes, however, was pieced together in March 2016. The dollar world was a smoldering wreck, and because of that global bond yields were still falling. Liquidity hedging was prevalent as anyone might honestly expect.

As a consequence, US primary dealers were hoarding UST’s coupons and bills. Their reported (net) holdings of these most prized instruments so very clearly rise and fall with each deflation/reflation cycle.

But there is no such thing according to the Fed narrative. There cannot be because four QE’s caused so much “money” to be “printed” something like that would be unthinkable – if it was ever the real thing it would reveal the whole corrupt nature of moneyless monetary policy. It didn’t matter the global downturn and how the US economy was pushed right up to the edge of recession, there was no liquidity problem in dollars they all said.

How, then, to explain what dealers were doing with all those UST’s?

As the world’s biggest bond dealers — including banks such as Bank of America Corp., Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and JPMorgan — struggled to get rid of the burgeoning pile of debt, the premium for the newest, easiest-to-trade Treasuries soared to the highest since 2011. The firms’ efforts to hedge all the Treasuries collecting on their balance sheets also roiled the futures market and a crucial corner of the financial system where traders lend and borrow securities overnight. [emphasis added]

The first business of any dealer is to warehouse securities; to purchase them in the primary market and then sell them off over time to brokerage customers. It is these dealers who buy at the federal government’s auctions in order to then distribute the bonds, bills, and notes out to the investing public.

That, of course, means they have to hold those bonds on balance sheet while the process plays out. It seems plausible that if the public doesn’t want to buy what’s being warehoused, including US government paper, the dealers will reluctantly have to hang on to, and finance, that paper.

But this was March 2016. The idea that dealers were in any way struggling to place UST’s was so very blatant nonsense. At the time I noted in reply:

The story has problems on both ends; to start with, why are dealers supposedly buying up UST inventory that they will only get stuck with? That has never been a money dealing function, as if there is ever great imbalance it is for dealers to manage but largely get out of the way and let price action take care of it. In other words, primary dealers would likely have been only buying enough to maintain orderly markets, not so much that they suddenly became bloated warehouse units of unhedged risk. It strains credibility already.

The second part is even worse. These banks are supposed to have had trouble selling UST’s during a period when everyone was buying them?

If anything, demand for treasuries was overwhelming. Dealers holding such a large portion back meant only one thing – a conscious choice about their own books. But QE and Janet Yellen’s “resilient” financial system.

That’s why dealer holdings follow the rhythm of the Euro$ squeezes. When it gets bad, they purposefully hold on to what’s in inventory because of perceived liquidity risks arising from all the other things dealers do (repo and FX just the start). After Bear, AIG, Lehman, et al, nobody’s going to be so unprepared for when BONY Mellon comes calling for collateral.

As noted during last December’s chaos, this dealer hoarding took on absolutely immense proportions. It’s like nothing we’d seen before, even during 2008 (admittedly, dealers were still learning about the downside of illiquidity and prudent matching leading up to that big week in September). As of last week, Jan 30, reported holdings (therefore hoarding) surpassed the record set the week of Christmas (when every market was a huge mess, except UST’s).

Are primary dealers having trouble selling their accumulated stock again? Of course not. Global bond markets are on fire, even more so than stocks. There is huge demand for pristine collateral types.

Not only that, both the eurodollar futures and UST curves exhibit absolutely brutal liquidity hedging going on. While everyone is fixated on UST 2s10s, the space between the 12-month bill and 5-year note has gone bananas – during the exact same timeframe dealer hoarding skyrocketed.

Sorry Bill Dudley, massive liquidity risks everywhere – and therefore an overwhelming number of potential buyers for what dealers are holding but won’t sell. Record hoarding. Even more hoarding to start February 2019.

Falling LIBOR and bond yields, confused and dazed central bankers, greater distortions to the major curves; as I wrote yesterday:

What does it say about the state of the world when those hugely contradictory expectations are being fulfilled? Rate cuts, official rate cuts, may be closer than you think.

There’s a lot of big stuff going on right now.

Or, sure, maybe there really is no one to buy all these UST’s piling up on exposed dealer balance sheets. On a totally unrelated note, I’m sure, interesting time for Bill Gross’ retirement announcement.

The Great Japanese Gold Trade Of 1859      Cache   Translate Page

Authored by JP Koning, via BullionStar.com,

The price of gold is $1,300 per ounce right now. But imagine if there was one place in the world – say Japan – where you could buy an ounce of gold for a fraction of that, $450.

By exporting and selling it at the world price, you’d have earned an easy $850 per ounce. This might sound too good to be true, but it’s precisely what happened in Japan in 1859. This post is about one of the greatest gold trades ever.

To understand how the greatest gold trade ever played out, we first need to delve into the years that preceded it.

Two centuries of isolation

By the early 1850s, Japan had been isolated from the rest of the world for over two hundred years. At the beginning of the 1600s, the ruling Tokugawa clan had adopted a policy of barring foreigners from entering the nation. The only point of Western contact was the Dutch trading post Dejima, an artificial island in the port of Nagasaki. But Western powers like the U.S. were anxious to trade with Japan too, so in 1853 U.S. commodore Matthew C. Perry was dispatched to negotiate a trade agreement.

Using the threat of force, Perry brought the Tokugawa shoguns to the bargaining table. In 1854, Perry managed to secure an opening of the ports of Shimoda and Hakodate to U.S. vessels. This was a coaling agreement: it only allowed for the resupply and refueling of steam ships. A general commercial treaty would have to wait.

One of the complications that Perry ran into was determining how American ships were to make payments for coaling. For centuries, international trade had been dominated by the Spanish silver dollar (otherwise known as the Mexican dollar, pillar, eight real, or piece of eight), which was minted in Mexico as well as at several South American mints.

The Spanish “pillar” dollar, with the Pillars of Hercules on its reverse side

But Japan, having been closed off, did not typically deal in Spanish/Mexican dollars. It had its own unique set of coins and measurements. Prices were set in ryobu, and shu, with 1 ryo = 4 bu = 16 shu. The ryo was represented by a gold coin referred to as a koban. An ichibu silver coin was worth one bu, with four ichibus equal to 1 ryo, or one gold koban.

What was needed was an exchange rate between the dollar and the Japanese coins. To pay for the fueling of his ships at the newly-opened port of Hakodate, Perry ended up accepting the rate offered by his Japanese hosts: one Mexican dollar to one ichibu. Since four ichibus were equal to a gold koban, this meant that a Mexican dollar was worth 1/4 koban.

The main Tokugawa coins, including the koban (top left) and silver ichibu (top right). Source: Wikipedia

This arrangement didn’t satisfy the Americans. A Mexican dollar weighed about three times an ichibu. Each dollar contained 25 gram of silver whereas an ichibu contained just a third of that, 8.5 grams of silver. Exchanging one Mexican dollar for one ichibu thus meant that the Americans were giving up two-thirds of the dollar’s silver content for free, or at least so it appeared to them.

With Perry having secured a small foothold on the island, Townsend Harris – the first US consul general to be appointed to preside in Shimoda – was tasked with prying Japan completely open to trade. In addition to negotiating a commercial treaty with the Tokugawa shogunate, Harris would also tackle the exchange rate controversy. Harris figured that if the exchange rate was set on a weight-for-weight basis, then one Mexican dollar would be the equivalent of three ichibu. In that way the silver bullion content of the two opposing coins would be equated, which to him only seemed fair.

Upon his arrival in September 1856, Harris immediately began to send letters to officials protesting the already-established one ichibu-to-one dollar exchange rate (Hanashiro, 1999). But he was unable to make much headway. For their part, the Japanese had excellent reasons for preferring the one ichibu-to-one dollar rate. When pressed by Perry and Harris, Japanese officials rightly pointed out that the ichibu was not like the Mexican dollar, which was valued according to its silver content. Rather, the ichibu was a token coin.

Token coins vs bullion coins

For readers of this post, token coins will be second nature. This is because all modern coin are tokens. A one-euro coin, for instance, weighs 7.5 grams, 75% of this copper, 15% nickel, and 10% zinc. The market value of this metal is around €0.05, far less than the coin’s face value of €1. This €0.95 gap between its commodity value and its face value is what qualifies the one-euro coin as a token.

Imagine that an alien beamed down to earth in 2019 and offered a Parisian the following deal. It will buy each of the Parisian’s 7.5 gram one-euro coins with a blank copper-nickel-zinc disc that weighs 7.5 grams. Would the Parisian take this offer? Of course not. She’d be giving up coins that trade for €1 a piece for discs that are worth a fraction of that amount.

In the same way that our Parisian would not want to accept the alien’s discs, the Japanese were understandably loath to trade away ichibus on a weight-for-weight basis. Like a euro coin, the ichibu’s value was supported not by its metal content but the authorities’ promise to accept it at a rate that far exceeded it bullion value. Selling ichibus to American on a weight-for-weight basis dramatically undervalued them, just like selling euro coins to an alien for metal discs would undervalue the euro.

It is possible that Harris and his American colleagues simply didn’t grasp the concept of token coinage. At the time, silver coins in the U.S. passed at their bullion value.  Or perhaps they willfully ignored the ichibu’s status as a token. Whatever the case, Harris pressed his case until the Tokugawa government bowed to his demands. In the 1858 Treaty of Amity and Commerce, the Japanese accepted a weight-for-weight exchange rate between the two types of coins, or three ichibus-to-one dollar.

This new relationship between the dollar and the ichibu destroyed the token status of the ichibu. Not only that, it created a terrific arbitrage opportunity between the Mexican dollar and the gold koban, thus laying the path for the 1859 gold mania.

The silver-gold arbitrage

At the pre-Harris exchange rate of one ichibu-to-one dollar, there was no arbitrage opportunity between Mexican dollars and Japanese koban. An American trader could convert four dollars into four ichibus, which in turn could be traded at the Tokugawa shogunate’s official rate for one gold koban. A koban contained around 6.3 gram of yellow metal (Bytheway & Chaiklin, 2016).

After melting the koban and exporting it, the trader could sell this 6.3 grams of gold for silver at the world silver-to-gold ratio of 15.5:1, netting himself 98 grams of silver. With one Mexican dollar containing 24.5 gram of silver, 98 grams was the equivalent of four Mexican dollars. Thus, having originally spent four Mexican dollars in Japan, the American trader ended up with four dollars. There was no profit in carrying this trade out. Below at left, I’ve illustrated how things balanced out.

The profitability of selling Mexican dollars in Japan

Harris’s 1859 weight-for-weight rule dramatically tipped the calculus of this trade in favour of the American side. Where before an American could convert four dollar into just four ichibus, now they were entitled to twelve ichibus. These twelve ichibu could in turn purchase three kobans, which together contained 19 gram of golds (6.8 grams each). On the international market, 19 grams of gold was worth 294 grams of silver, or 12 Mexican dollar (294 grams divided by 24.5 grams/per coin).

Thus, at the new rate, an American trader could magically turn four Mexican dollar into twelve Mexican dollars. By constantly recirculating silver and gold between the world market and Japan, it was theoretically possible to make infinite profits.  (To understand the profitability of this trade, see calculation above at right). Below, the Bank of Japan Museum has provided a nice portrayal of this trade.

The great gold trade illustrated. Source: Bank of Japan

Delay tactics

The Treaty of Amity and Commerce took effect on July 4, 1859. But the great gold trade did not take off yet. Anticipating that foreigners would flock to exchange a dollar for an equal weight of Japanese silver coins, leading to a flood of gold out of the nation, the Japanese suddenly introduced a new coin, the nishu-gin. They had carefully calibrated the nishu’s specifications such that two nishus weighed as much as one Mexican dollar. So when it came to trade dollars for Japanese coins on a weight-for-weight basis, as stipulated in the Harris Treaty, Japanese officials could provide two nishu per dollar instead of three ichibus.

Source: Bank of Japan

The nishu was given a face value of two shu. This meant that whereas it took just four ichibus to get a gold koban, it would take eight nishus to get a koban (1 koban = 1 ryo, and 16 shus = 1 ryo). Introducing the nishu effectively reestablished the pre-Harris exchange rate. An American trader’s four Mexican dollars could now be converted into eight nishus, and eight nishus into a koban. But the amount of gold in a koban was only worth four Mexican dollars in the world market, which was the original quantity of dollars spent to buy nishus. Having removed the gain to be made by selling dollars and purchasing kobans, Japanese officials had short-circuited the great gold trade.

The Americans were indignant, so the wary Japanese pulled the nishu off the market just a few weeks after introducing it. Now they relied on other tactics to cut off the great gold trade. Officials decreed that locals were not to sell gold kobans to foreigners. But this was evaded since kobans were easy to hide. They also limited the amounts of ichibus they made available. Huge lineups at official Japanese exchange offices developed as Westerners submitted claims to convert dollar into ichibus. But using money mules and straw names, traders could avoid their quotas:

“In October 1859, Thomas Eskrigge applied for three hundred and fifteen million dollars on behalf of Messers Bank, Rake, Nelly, Smell-bad, and No-nose… Another petition simply said, “Please change for me today $250,000,000 and much oblige.” (Frost, 1970)

By the fall of 1859, the gold mania was in full flight. Ships left China for Japan with cases full of Mexican dollars and returned laden with kobans. Below is a list of the vessels dispatched by Jardine, Matheson & Company – a large British trading firm – including the quantity of koban exported (McMaster, 1960).

Source: McMaster, 1960

Estimates for the total number of koban sent out of Japan are wide-ranging. According to Bytheway & Chaiklin (2016), Japanese scholars have set a lower bound for koban exports of 100,000 (0.63 tonnes of gold) and an upper one of 20 million koban (126 tonnes). Let’s assume that 25 tonnes of gold was exported. Twenty-five tonnes of gold may not be much gold these days, but back in the 1860s this was quite a bit. Total above ground gold supply had only reached 7,000 tonnes of gold by the 1860s, and the world was only producing around 190 tonnes per year (Turk, 2012). Thus the amount of kobans that left Japan constituted a significant share of that year’s production.

The speculation comes to an end

Japanese officials brought the mania to an end after a few months. Foreigners were still allowed to convert their dollars on a weight-for-weight basis, and four ichibus could still be swapped for one koban. But the koban coin itself was now updated. The new koban that debuted in early 1860 contained just a third the gold that the old koban had contained. The image below illustrate the size of the debasement. This monetary reform had the effect of reducing the amount of gold that a dollar could purchase, thus cutting into the profit of a round-trip between China and Japan. The great gold trade was over.

The 1860 reduction of the koban gold coin. Source: Wikipedia

The 1859 Japanese gold trade was great for all the westerners who profited from it. But it wasn’t so great for the Japanese. The Tokugawa government had earned much of its revenue through the issuance of token coins like ichibu. With token coins being replaced by less profitable bullion coins, that revenues source was gone. Faced with violent opposition, the last Tokugawa prince would resign in 1867.

The gold trade also pressured Japan’s feudal class structure. In an effort to accommodate themselves to foreigners’ conception of coinage, the Japanese government imposed a huge fall in the purchasing power of both the ichibu and koban. Anyone who earned an income denominated in these coins was suddenly much poorer. The Samurai warrior caste, many of whom lived off fixed stipends, was particularly hard hit. Samurai revolts would become a recurrent theme over the next few decades.

Many decades later, Japan remains an important gold market.  The Tokyo Commodity Exchange, or TOCOM, is one of the largest gold trading venues in Asia. Following the liberalisation of the Japanese gold market in the 1970s, Japan became one of the world’s largest importers of gold during the 1980s and 1990s, fueled in part by an investment boom. But don’t go to Tokyo expecting to buy gold for $450 an ounce.

Chase Bank Abruptly Bans Proud Boys Leader       Cache   Translate Page

Chase Bank has notified Proud Boys Chairman Enrique Tarrio that they will no longer do business with him, and he has until April 1st to move his money out, according to a letter obtained by Big League Politics.

Enrique Tarrio (left)

While the bank hasn't stated why they are shutting Tarrio's accounts, the letter comes "just days after Chase Bank’s payment processor, Chase Paymentech, de-platformed him on a website he runs that allows groups and charities to sell merchandise, and raise money for causes," writes Big League Politics' Waldo Crane

The website, 1776.shop, is most known for selling the famous “Roger Stone Did Nothing Wrong” shirts which Stone was spotted in during the late-night arrest at his home. -Big League Politics

Tarrio - who is Cuban and Black, was prominently featured in a September article in the Daily Beast highlighting young men of color joining "White-Supremacist groups." Of note, the Proud Boys - a fraternal organization founded by Gavin McInnes, has been labeled a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center, for which McInnes is currently suing them

Since the Daily Beast report, Tarrio says he has been deplatformed by a number of services, including: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Airbnb, FirstData, Square, Stripe and PayPal.

"My political views pretty much mirror those of President Donald Trump," Tarrio tells Big League Politics. "But the media, and groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center, smear me trying to tie me, an Afro-Cuban, to ideologies that would force me out of my own country if they went into effect. It’s completely asinine and based completely outside of reality."

Tarrio is worried that he won't be able to function in the 21st century if he continues to be blacklisted.

"How am I supposed to get food to feed my family? Are taking the directions of the Governor of Virginia and trying to abort me 34 years after birth," he said in a statement. "They are essentially denying my existence, and trying to force me into homelessness, and ultimately death."

Tarrio thinks President Trump should do something about the deplatforming.

"He needs to step in, not only because if he doesn’t he will lose in 2020 with all of his supporters being kicked off social media, but because it’s the right thing to do."

The Proud Boys made headlines last year after scuffling with Antifa during political rallies for which the fraternal organization had legally obtained permits.
