It has been two months since Quadriga founder and CEO Gerald Cotten died and took the keys to his crypto exchange's cold-storage wallets to the grave (at least, that's the official version of events relayed by the company and Cotten's widow to a bankruptcy court in Canada, where Quadriga is seeking protection from a flurry of customer lawsuits). And as a growing number of analysts and amateur sleuths call bs on the company's narrative - leading some to wonder whether Cotten might have faked his own death in a foreign land and run off with $150 million of his clients' money - the first stories of people who lost their entire life savings in the imbroglio are beginning to emerge.
Enter Tong Zou, a 30-year-old Canadian software engineer who had been working in Silicon Valley for the past seven years as a software engineer. After deciding to move to Vancouver last year, he decided he'd try and save a few bucks on transfer fees when converting his USD life savings into Canadian dollars. To accomplish this, he first converted his money into crypto on Quadriga's platform, then traded it for the Canadian dollar equivalent and tried to transfer the proceeds to his Canadian bank account.

What happened next is pretty much the definition of "wrong place, wrong time."
Suffice it to say, around this time, Quadriga ran into the "liquidity issues" that are the subject of its current bankruptcy filing. As a result, Zou's transfer has been pending for months.
He believes he won't ever see the money - some $422,000 he had saved over the past seven years.
"It’s all my savings, so I’m just living on what little I have left and trying to start over," Zou said in a phone interview Friday from Vancouver, where he has been living out of an AirBnB for the past month. “It pretty much took everything away from me."
Zou is one of Quadriga’s 115,000 clients who are out of luck after the sudden death of the firm’s founder left C$190 million in cryptocurrencies protected by his passwords unretrievable. The exchange has halted operations and was granted protection from creditors on Feb. 5 in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Halifax.
Zou considers himself "one of the largest affected individual users" - according to an affidavit he filed this week as part of the court proceedings. He bought Bitcoin in the U.S. and transferred it over to Quadriga CX and immediately sold it for Canadian dollars, which was supposed to be deposited into his Canadian bank account. That was in October. He’s still waiting.
"I wasn’t using it for trading - I just wanted to move my money over to my Canadian bank account," Zou said in the interview. "What I didn’t know was that my withdrawal would be pending or incomplete and it never got deposited in my bank account. I’ve been waiting four months so far."
Now, Zou is stuck in an Airbnb in Vancouver, and struggling to figure out his next move, according to an interview with BBG.
And he's not the only one.
"A lot of other people are in the same situation as me," he said.
Meanwhile, Cotten's ex-wife and his fellow executives at Quadriga claim that outside cybersecurity experts brought in to try and penetrate Cotten's encrypted phone and laptop have achieved only "limited success", and the wallet keys remain nowhere to be found.
Yet, as we noted the other day, there has been some movement of coins from wallets believed to be controlled by Quadriga. Though these could have been automatic transfers set up before Cotten's death, the issue has certainly added fodder for certain 'conspiracy theories' about Cotten, as some question the official narrative that he died in Jaipur, India while on a trip to set up an orphanage.

Comunicat de presă DIICOT În urma unei cereri de asistență judiciară internațională, transmisă de către Secret Service (Statele Unite ale Americii), prin intermediul Department, procurorii D.I.I.C.O.T. – Structura Centrală au efectuat investigații faţă de mai mulţi cetăţeni români, sub aspectul savarsirii infracţiunilor de constituire a unui grup infracţional organizat, fraudă informatică și spălare de bani. În fapt s-a reţinut faptul că, începând cu anul 2016, mai multe persoane din București, Cluj, Craiova și Alexandria au fost implicate în săvârşirea de fraude informatice care au avut ca țintă cetățeni americani, prejudiciul cauzat fiind de aproximativ 34.000.000$. Activitatea infracțională a suspecţilor a constat într-o schemă de fraudă online a licitațiilor, concepută pentru a înșela utilizatorii care doreau să achiziţioneze produse online. Prin intermediul unor site-uri de comerț electronic, membrii grupului au postat anunțuri cu marfă care în realitate nu exista. Victimele interesate să cumpere bunurile inexistente erau îndrumate să contacteze „vânzătorul” prin telefon sau email. Suspecţii operau „centre de comandă” unde ofereau explicaţii pe larg a motivelor pentru care bunurile din anunţuri erau la un preţ scăzut şi precizau că acestea trebuie să fie comercializate cât mai rapid. De asemenea, suspecţii oferau explicaţii despre modalitatea în care trebuie efectuată plata pentru aceste bunuri, convingând victimele să transmită sumele de bani, fie în valută USD, fie folosind metode de plată care efectuau imediat convertirea în USD. Ulterior, suspecţii contactau un procesor de plăţi american care efectua conversia în bitcoin precum si transmiterea criptomonedei către procesoare de plăţi străine aparţinând suspecţilor. În urma solicitării din partea autorităților competente din Statele Unite ale Americii, la data de 11.12.2018, procurorii D.I.I.C.O.T.- Structura Centrală împreună cu ofiţeri de poliţie judiciară din cadrul structurilor de combatere a criminalității organizate din București, Craiova, Cluj, Ploiești, Pitești, Olt, Ilfov, Ialomița, Teleorman și Vâlcea, au efectuat 27 de percheziții pe raza municipiilor Bucureşti, Teleorman,Craiova şi Cluj-Napoca şi a judeţelor Ilfov, Teleorman şi Olt, la domiciliile și reședintele persoanelor vizate, ocazie cu care au fost ridicate sau indiponibilizate 51 de telefoane mobile, 8 HDD –uri, 40 de memory stick-uri, 32 de laptop-uri, 12 tablete, 5 de unități centrale P.C., 86 de medii optice (CD/DVD), un aparat foto, 11 carduri bancare, 3 carduri de memorie și 2 autoturisme (în valoare aproximativă de 61.000 de euro). De asemenea, au mai fost ridicate sumele de 207.600 de lei, 24.500 de euro, 5.000 de USD și 5.500 CHF. Procurorii DIICOT – Structura Centrală au dispus instituirea sechestrului asigurator asupra a 10 bunuri imobile (7 terenuri, o casă și 2 apartamente), cu o valoare totală estimată la suma de 310.000 de euro. Trebuie subliniat faptul că, în premieră pentru autoritățile de aplicare a legii din România, au fost indisponibilizate criptomenede RIPPLE și BITCOIN, cu valoare aproximativă de 5.000 de dolari. În cauză, au fost identificate și conduse la sediul D.I.I.C.O.T.-Structura Centrală şi la sediile brigăzilor de combatere a criminalității organizate din Cluj și Craiova,un număr de 18 persoane. Totodată, faţă de 14 suspecţi, Curtea de Apel Bucureşti a dispus, in baza mandatelor internaționale de arestare,extradarea acestora în Statele Unite ale Americii. Suportul de specialitate a fost asigurat de către Direcția Operațiuni Speciale. The farce of consent as currently deployed is probably doing more harm as it gives the misimpression of meaningful control that we are guiltily ceding because we are too ignorant to do otherwise and are impatient for, or need, the proffered service. There is a strong sense that consent is still fundamental to respecting people’s privacy. In some cases, yes, consent is essential. But what we have today is not really consent.
So long as a data collector can overcome sampling bias with a relatively small proportion of the consenting population, this minority will determine the range of what can be inferred for the majority and it will discourage firms from investing their resources in procedures that help garner the will- ing consent of more than the bare minimum number of people. In other words, once a critical threshold has been reached, data collectors can rely on more easily observable information to situate all individuals according to these patterns, rendering irrelevant whether or not those individuals have consented to allowing access to the critical information in question. Withholding consent will make no difference to how they are treated!

Last year, internet searches for Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) numbered approximately 100 per month; in the years and decades before that, the weekly total searches numbered mostly in single digits. Yet in the first few weeks of this year, searches have topped 100 per day and seem to be on an uptrend. People who’ve never heard the term “chartalism” are speaking — and acting — as if a new and groundbreaking discovery has been made; “a new kind of science” in the realm of economics, situated neatly upon the doorsill of a new decade. It’s perplexing to see a theory which holds that governments can’t really go broke because they can always create more currency capture imaginations, if still largely on the periphery of discourse.
For years, Austrian School perspectives have been taken to task for failing to “predict” (which, in fact, they have and continue to). Yet MMT not only doesn’t predict anything; it fails to explain the state of nature better than existing, prevailing models. Social science, like its physical counterpart, advances by virtue of two key determinants: phenomenological explanations which are demonstrably superior to existing ones, and funerals. Even neoclassical economists, regularly critical of Austrian, monetarist and other views, hold that — as has been demonstrated in every era, within every culture, and upon every continent — bad monetary and/or fiscal policies ultimately result in economic breakdown and destitution.
Whether the rapid decline and ultimate disappearance of the individual propensity to hold a fiat currency are purely monetary, entirely psychological, or a combination of the two, the circumstances leading to it reappears consistently throughout history. Every one of the scores of known cases of hyperinflation dating back over 700 years bears witness to a reckless, breakneck campaign of money creation preceding it.
Blaming psychology for hyperinflationary episodes also, and far more ominously, hints at the same conclusion which virtually all collectivist governments come to after their starry-eyed schemes initially fail: that human nature, not the hubris that attends attempts to overthrow the fundamentals of supply and demand, is at fault. And thus that human beings, and not policy, needforcefulreadjustment.
Holding that inflation — of either the ‘vanilla’ or hyper- varieties — is overwhelmingly the product of wars or exogenous events is also wholly misleading. It is always and only the political reaction to exogenous events which determines economic outcomes.
Such an approach also bypasses the issue of the garden variety of inflationary outbreak. To be sure, while it would surely not be as ruinous nor as fast-acting as classic hyperinflation, a rise in inflation to a “mere” 8%, 15%, or 20% per annum would have a sizably adverse impact upon individuals living on fixed incomes, financial markets, and general economic calculation: the functioning of firms, markets for goods and services, and the financial choices of families, communities, and organizations.
Furthermore, MMT is invariably (and almost exclusively) invoked proximate to incomprehensibly expensive government program proposals: a so-called Jobs Guarantee (estimated cost approaching, and likely exceeding, $1T per year), “Medicare for All” (estimated cost: $32T over ten years), and a “Green New Deal” (estimated costs ranging from $7T to $13T to $49T to implement).
(Also: considering that MMT contemplates a “closed loop” whereby money is created and later taxed away, it is likely that any practical implementation will necessarily subsume cashlesseconomydiktats.)
Add to all of this the bunker mentality of many MMT proponents, who frequently refuse to discuss the assumptions upon which MMT operates by dismissing those who question them as disingenuous – and there is more than enough reason to suspect that MMT is not new, far from scientific, and explains nothing. It is at best a scientistic vehicle that exists only to provide an academic imprimatur for unlimited government spending.
Yet I’m not worried about MMT.

History demonstrates that betting against the willingness of people - Americans, specifically, who have the greatest record of fawning over political and economic views which defenestrate the very basis of the prosperity which gives both the leisure time and technological reach to permit intellectual flights of fancy - to embrace that which flies in the face of demonstrable evidence, is a sucker's bet.
One of the major dangers of powerful states - indeed, states in general - is that with a single vote or the stroke of a pen a lot of damage can be done. But any pain will only be temporary.
It comes down to one word: Bitcoin. Actually, I should be more specific: crypto.
At this very moment, there are hundreds of independent teams of developers in dorm rooms, garages, basements, apartments, rented offices, and other such locations working on both subtle tweaks to existing cryptocurrency issues and wholly new coins and assets: thousands, maybe tens of thousands of individuals, all over the world, silently but inexorably expanding the bounds within which individuals can extricate and divorce their personal lives from the inimical policy implementations of expanding states.
At ten years old, the list of places where Bitcoin — and crypto more generally — has been the single bulwark between people and utter ruin grows annually. As long ago as 2013, Bitcoin (then less than $100) surged as individuals banked in Cyprus used it to escape the bank levy — a ploy in which politicians explicitly sought to seize private deposits in order to paper over their policy errors and banks’ losses owing to them.
All across Africa, South America, and Asia — and regardless of Bitcoin's exchange rate at the time — the unbanked have, owing to the ubiquity of mobile and cell phone ownership, been able to engage in saving, consuming, remittances and entrepreneurialism despite previously insurmountable sanctions, financial surveillance, and fees associated with transfers, banking, etc.
In Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Turkey, and anywhere else that economic hardships have surfaced — over time, or overnight — Bitcoin and crypto more generally have given individuals the opportunity to safeguard their economic liberty and in some cases their verylives. In places where economic life is viable but burdensome, cryptocurrency access provides an outlet.
Time may prove this incorrect, but at present MMT seems to be little more than a pernicious, academically-garbed attempt to overcome the unwelcome (and repeatedly evinced) fact that governments are as tied to economic limits as firms and individuals are. But a more fundamental truth precedes this: if implemented, and whether at that time Bitcoin, another crypto issue, or another, yet-undiscovered innovation has surfaced, liberty will always find a way to triumph — even when the utopian plans of authoritarian regimes are briefly in control.

Kashmir Hill wanted Amazon out of her life, completely.
It was the first week of a six-week experiment in living without tech giants. She had a virtual private network, or VPN, that would keep her devices walled off from any Amazon product. She would avoid Whole Foods and power down her Kindles.
But she had a problem. A small, chipper problem.
Alexa.
She couldn't connect her Amazon Echo to the VPN. But if she just unplugged the smart speaker, someone, like her husband, might forget and plug it back in.
Then a colleague suggested that she hide it. Say, in a drawer.
Hill was so used to Alexa's constant presence, the convenient timers and music on demand, that she hadn't even considered putting the device away.
"We've only had it for two years, and it already has the level of prominence where I couldn't have imagined just taking it off the counter," she told NPR's Weekend Edition. "I just can't believe that, especially since I'm a privacy reporter."
Last fall, she decided to try cutting off Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Apple — each for a week, and then all at once. She wrote about her attempt for Gizmodo.
"People will say, if you don't like the company, just stop using their products," Hill said. "I wanted to find out if that was possible, and, spoiler, it's not possible."
Beyond a surface level boycott, like deleting her Facebook account, Hill tried to sever any ties that usually funnel her data, money and attention to the five companies. Each publishes a list of IP addresses they control, so technologist Dhruv Mehrotra built her a VPN that essentially blacklisted those addresses.
Armed with that VPN and unmitigated determination, Hill put Alexa in a drawer and started her Amazon week. And it was as though a vast tract of the web blinked out.
"When I started pulling stats about Amazon, I was shocked," she said. The company reportedly controls nearly half of all online commerce. But the company's most profitable business is Amazon Web Services, or AWS, its cloud-computing arm that hosts apps and websites.
"They basically control kind of the backbone of Internet infrastructure," she said. "They're not just shipping packages out all over America. They're also shipping a ton of data to people's computers."
Netflix, HBO Go and AirBnB are among the many websites hosted by AWS, and therefore were off-limits to Hill during her Amazon week (though she would have been free to browse NPR.org). Work tools were also forbidden: AWS hosts Gizmodo's website, as well as the messaging platform Slack. At one point, her daughter cried over the digital entertainment blockade.
Other companies presented unexpected challenges. Blocking Google meant she couldn't use Lyft or Uber, which rely on Google Maps. Going into any given coffee shop put her at risk of coming into contact with Microsoft, if the shop used Windows to operate its payment system. Cutting off Facebook left her feeling strangely isolated, pining for connection even at the cost of pervasive data surveillance.
And there were slip-ups, like when she ordered an item off eBay instead of Amazon, only to have it show up at her door in an instantly recognizable package. The seller had used Amazon to fulfill the order.
"The big thing I learned is that it's not possible to navigate the modern world without coming into contact with these companies," she said. "It made me certainly sympathetic to some of the critics who are saying these companies are too dominant in their spaces."
The exception? Apple. Hill says when she gave up her iPhone and stepped out of Apple's "walled garden," she had no trouble staying away from the company — and it wasn't collecting data on her.
But giving up her iPhone posed another challenge when she tried to block all five companies at once in the experiment's final week.
"Google and Apple have a duopoly on the smartphone market," she said. "So when I went out trying to find a smartphone that was not made or touched by either tech giant, it wasn't possible."
After searching in vain, she settled on a "dumb phone." She chose the Nokia 3310, an orange brick with T9 texting that has spawned countless memes — and perhaps even ensured its own continued existence — by being essentially indestructible.
"I went back to the '90s!" Hill said, laughing. "This experiment was a time machine."
A time machine, and a lesson, too. Before the experiment, the first thing she would do every morning, before touching her husband or talking to her daughter, was stare at a screen.
"I would grab my iPhone and just start scrolling," she admitted. "It's how I started the day, every day."
There was nothing worth scrolling through on the Nokia 3310, so she didn't bother. The smartphone fast broke her habit. Now she turns her phone off each evening, and she doesn't turn it on in the morning until she needs it.
"I got out of some bad tech habits," she said. "And I'm just kind of looking at screens less. So, if nothing else, I'm glad I did this experiment in terms of becoming a healthier tech user."

Apagar inmediatamente el equipo tras detectar la infección y aislarlo de la red.
Seguir los pasos del siguiente apartado para limpiar la infección y proceder a recuperar las Volume Shadow Copies.
Proceder a la restauración de las copias de seguridad.
Intentar recuperar los archivos con herramientas forenses.
Nota: Ten en cuenta que todo el software que aconsejo usar para eliminar este ransomware Blower@india.com Bloweres gratuito. Estos pasos están probados y deberían eliminar esta amenaza en los principales navegadores de Windows. Debes seguir todos los pasos en el orden indicado para eliminar satisfactoriamente Blower@india.com Blower.

FASE 1: Eliminar Blower@india.com Blower con HitmanPro Kickstart
PASO 1: Eliminar Blower@india.com Blower con MalwareBytes Anti-Malware
Esta es una de las mejores herramientas gratuitas para la detección de malware que nos permite estar protegidos de las posibles infecciones de virus, gusanos, troyanos, rootkits, dialers, spywares y malwares.
Primero descargaremos Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (gratuito) desde mi sección de AntiMalware.
Ejecutaremos el instalador descargado y pulsaremos Ejecutar. Nos va a mostrar la pantalla de bienvenida donde pulsaremos Siguiente.
Instalaremos el programa y seguiremos cada uno de los pasos indicados sin modificar ningún parámetro predeterminado. Cuando termine la instalación chequearemos la opción Habilitar prueba gratuita de Malwarebytes Anti-Malware y Ejecutar Malwarebytes Antimalwarey luego pulsaremos Finalizar.
Una vez iniciado el programa va a realizar un chequeo de la base de datos y la actualizará en el caso que esté desactualizada.
Una vez terminada la actualización podremos realizar un análisis del sistema para encontrar posibles amenazas. Podemos pulsar el botón Arreglar ahora o el botón Analizar ahora para iniciar el análisis.
Empezará el escaneo del ordenador y esperaremos a que termine. Durante el proceso puede detectar algunas amenazas en nuestro ordenador.
Una vez terminado el análisis nos mostrará las amenazas detectadas. Para eliminarlas clicaremos el botón Eliminar seleccionados.
Después de esto Malwarebytes puede pedirnos reinicar nuestro ordenador para que tengan efecto las acciones realizadas.
Luego podemos ir al Historial y podemos eliminar permanentemente las amenazas que tengamos en Cuarentena. (En mi caso todas).

PASO 2: Analizar el sistema con HitmanPro en busca de otras amenazas
HitmanPro nos va a permitir escanear el sistema en busca de una segunda opinión, diseñado para rescatar a nuestro equipo contra el malware (virus, troyanos, rootkits, etc.) que han infectado el equipo a pesar de todas las medidas de seguridad que ha tomado (como software antivirus, cortafuegos, etc.).
Descargamos HitmanPro (lo podéis descargar desde mi sección de AntiMalware) y lo guardamos en el escritorio. Descargaremos la versión de 32 o 64 bits dependiendo del sistema operativo que tengamos.
Haremos doble clic en el archivo y veremos la pantalla de inicio, como podemos ver en la imagen.
Clicaremos en el botón Nexto Siguiente para instalar el programa. Dependiendo si queremos analizar el sistema una sola vez o si queremos mantener el programa, seleccionaremos la siguiente opción y pulsaremos Siguiente o Next.
HitmanPro va a empezar a analizar el sistema un búsca de posibles infecciones.
Cuando haya terminado, nos mostrará un listado con todas las infecciones encontradas. Haremos clic en el botón Siguiente o Next, para eliminar lo que haya detectado.
Si nos interesa mantener y seguir usando el programa, clicaremos en Activate free license y usemos la prueba gratuita de 30 días.

OPCION 1: Restaurar los archivos cifrados por el ransomware Blower@india.com Blower con ShadowExplorer
En algunos casos vamos a poder recuperar versiones anteriores de nuestros archivos cifrados. Esto lo podremos hacer con funciones como la de Restaurar el sistema o mediante programas epecíficos como ShadowExplorer.
Una vez instalado realizaremos un doble clic en el icono del escritorio.
Una vez en el programa podremos ver en el desplegable las distintos puntos donde se han realizado las copias. Escogeremos uno donde estén los archivos correctamente.
Buscaremos los archivos o las carpetas que deseemos recuperar, lo seleccionaremos, pulsaremos el botón derecho y le diremos Export.
Escogeremos la carpeta donde queremos recuperar los archivos o carpetas. En el caso de que exista nos pedirá si la queremos sobreescribir.
Repetiremos la operativa tantas veces como queramos hasta recuperar todos los archivos o carpetas que nos interese.

Cuando Blower@india.com Blower cifra un archivo le hace una copia, encripta esta copia y elimina el original. Es por esto que podemos usar programas de recuperación de archivos.
Una vez instalado realizaremos un doble clic en el icono del escritorio.
Al ejecutarlo por primera vez, vamos a seguir su asistente y pulsaremos Siguiente.
Nos va a aparecer una pantalla donde seleccionaremos que tipo de archivos queremos recuperar. Luego pulsaremos Siguiente y continuamos hasta que empiece a buscar.
Cuando termine nos mostrará una pantalla con los resultados de búsqueda y seleccionaremos los archivos que queramos recuperar y pulsaremos el botón Recuperar.
Nos va a pedir donde queremos guardar los archivos a recuperar, seleccionaremos la carpeta y aceptaremos.
Al finalizar mostrará un mensaje con la información de los archivos recuperados.

The NZDUSD opens at 0.6741 (mid-rate) this morning.
Safe-haven currencies outperformed last week with investors concerned about the lack of progress in the China-US trade negotiations and slowing global growth.
On Friday President Donald Trump told reporters he will not meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping before a crucial March deadline when tariffs on Chinese goods are set to increase automatically. Trumps comments came after White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told reporters that the US and China have a "pretty sizable distance to go" before reaching a trade deal.
Over the course of week the Bank of England, European Central Bank and the Reserve Bank of Australia all cut their growth forecasts for 2019, with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand like to follow suit at Wednesday afternoon’s meeting.
The CAD spiked higher on Friday after data from Statistics Canada showed that the employment surged by 66.8k jobs in January following an increase of 9,300 jobs in December. The result was well ahead of economists’ forecasts of a 5k increase in jobs.
Direction for the NZD will be dictated by Wednesday’s RBNZ monetary policy statement with inflation expectations and a press conference following shortly after. On the international front the UK GDP report for Q4 is due to be released tonight while the US monthly inflation and retail sales reports are due for release in the second half of the week.
Global equity market closed out the week mixed, - Dow -0.25%, S&P 500 +0.06%, FTSE -0.26%, DAX -1.05%, CAC -0.48%, Nikkei -2.01%, Shanghai Closed.
Gold prices were unchanged on Friday, closing out the week at $1,313 an ounce. WTI Crude Oil prices pushed higher on Friday rising 1.7% closing at $53.09 a barrel.

Maybe the local foreign exchange market was already looking for a reason to sell the Kiwi dollar last Thursday 7th February, therefore the employment/wages statistics for the December quarter released that day provided the convenient catalyst to send the NZD/USD rate lower.
Ahead of the softer employment data, the Kiwi had failed to hold above 0.6900 for the second time this year, thus the currency was already in retreat mode.
The surprising and unexpected increase in the unemployment rate to 4.3% (up sharply from the record low of 3.9% in the September quarter - which was subsequently revised up to 4%) provided fuel to argument that a weaker economy would tip the RBNZ into cutting the OCR interest rate sooner rather than later i.e. Kiwi dollar negative.
The dramatic turnaround in the employment trend in late 2018 looks very suspicious to me, as the anecdotal evidence from around the country across industries and business firms is that they all continue to struggle to find enough workers to do the job.
It feels like a “rogue” number and in time my view is that it will be proven that the labour market did not suddenly turn soft in the December quarter.
The evidence in the accompanying quarterly Employment Survey (employers surveyed) and Labour Cost Index numbers is that finally business firms are having to pay higher wages to retain and attract staff.
The supply/demand equation for the labour market remains a shortage of supply. The RBNZ will not read too much into one quarterly increase in the unemployment rate, particularly as the inflationary implications from the 3.1% increase in wages over the last year in the Quarterly Employment Survey cannot be ignored.
The 4.3% unemployment rate comes from the Household Labour Force Survey which is a random survey of 15,000 households that asks if they are in work or not. Stats NZ have made major revisions and adjustments to the December 2018 quarter’s unemployment data, so caution is the word in reacting to this data.
The NZ dollar FX market appears to have over-reacted to this jobs data by selling the Kiwi down to 0.6740. The recent incomprehensible revisions to New Zealand’s net migration data does not instil confidence that Stats NZ are accurately measuring supply and demand in the labour market.
The net result from these potentially dodgy economic numbers is that the FX market may be somewhat disappointed that the RBNZ is not as bearish on the economy as many expect when the Monetary Policy Statement is released this Wednesday 13th February.
RBA turns neutral and revises economic forecasts lower
The news has been totally negative for the Aussie dollar over recent weeks, culminating with the Reserve Bank of Australia adjusting their official stance on monetary policy settings from “next move in official interest rates is up” to a “neutral” outlook and revising down their GDP growth and inflation forecasts.
After recovering up to near 0.7300 against the USD a week ago, the Aussie dollar has depreciated to 0.7080. Over the last six months to AUD rate against the USD has found a strong level of buying support around the 0.7050 level (apart from the “flashcrash” on 3 January 2019).
My forward view on the AUD continues to be that all the bad news is now fully priced into the current exchange rate and all the currency speculators who wanted to sell the AUD as a result, have already done so. In other words, the “short-sold” market positioning in the AUD is exhausted and the more likely scenario is buying of AUD’s on profit-taking when it fails to record new lows.
The FX markets have been ignoring the recent increases in gold, iron ore and copper prices that would normally send the AUD exchange rate higher. Iron ore prices have jumped from US$65/MT to US$90/MT following the Vale mine/dam burst in Brazil that reduces global supply and inventory. Global inventory levels have been reducing sharply in many metal and mining commodities that Australia exports.
Ultimately, the resources industries determine Australia’s economic performance and the outlook for their mining sector looks positive. The AUD/USD exchange rate divergence from their commodity prices is not sustainable. For this reason the AUD recovery will drag the Kiwi up from the bottom-end of its trading range at 0.6700/0.6750. The NZD/AUD cross-rate should continue to ease back to 0.9300 as the AUD out-performs the NZD against the USD over coming months.
Brexit permutations….
It would be a very brave person who predicts the UK Brexit outcome over coming weeks in terms of the impact on the GBP exchange rate.
From the current exchange rate of $1.2950 against the USD the Pound could strengthen to $1.4000 if PM Theresa May convinces the EU to adjust the Irish border backstop arrangement, or alternatively the Pound could weaken to $1.2000 if no deal is struck and we have a “hard” Brexit and extensive turmoil come 31 March.
The implications for local exporters in GBP (wine and sheepmeat exporters mainly) is that the NZD/GBP rate in three months’ time could be anywhere between 0.4800 and 0.5700.
Where sharp movements both ways are highly probable, the appropriate hedging strategy for local exporters is to buy three and six month NZD call options against the GBP at a strike rate of 0.5300.
Global equity markets have weakened and the USD has strengthened in recent days as it seems President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will not have the opportunity to meet on trade before the end of the month.
How the financial/investment markets will react will depend on how much progress is made at trade negotiations in Beijing this week. Chinese Vice-Premier Liu He will join US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin in the high-level talks. If the meeting communique is positive on resolving the trade wars the equity markets will rally and the USD will weaken back to $1.1500 against the Euro from the current $1.1325 level.
The medium term view on the USD remains the same, weaker in 2019 due to the Fed U-turn on interest rates, larger US fiscal deficits and the trade wars ending.
The implications for the NZD/USD rate would suggest higher towards 0.7000, and that is before even mentioning the return of whole milk powder prices to US$3,000/MT last week.
Global markets traded with a risk-off tone for most of Friday after Trump said he wasn’t planning to meet President Xi before US tariffs on China are due to step-up on March 1st. Equity markets fell across Asia and Europe, although a late bounce in US equities left them marginally higher on the day. The NZD was little changed on the day, but NZ rates experienced another sizable fall, with the 10 year NZ government bond yield hitting a record low level.
Sentiment remained negative for much of the Friday trading session, with global equities extending the sell-off from Thursday. Trump told reporters that it was unlikely he would meet President Xi face-to-face before the March 1st deadline date which would see tariffs raised on Chinese imports. While this doesn’t preclude an extension of the trade ceasefire if the two sides can make sufficient progress in the talks, and Trump said he would “maybe” meet Xi at later date, the market took the news negatively. Concerns around US-China trade, with the clock ticking on the March 1st deadline date, added to pre-existing market worries around the state of global, and in particular Chinese, growth. US Trade Representative Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin visit China this week for further trade talks. Also not helping sentiment were reports in the German media that the US Administration was considering car tariffs, with a variety of options under consideration, including tariff rates of 10% and 25%.
Asian and European equities fell across the board, extending Thursday’s declines. The Nikkei fell 2% and the Hang Seng opened almost 2% lower, although it later recovered most of its earlier falls. European equities were down between 0.5% and 1%. The negative sentiment extended into the US trading session, with The S&P500 down almost 1%, before a late rally left it 0.1% higher on the day (and close to flat on the week). There was no obvious trigger for the turn-around in US equities, although some commentators cited comments by San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly, who raised the possibility of using QE as a more regular policy tool, as helping to boost the market. Daly said “you could imagine executing policy with your interest rate as your primary tool, and the balance sheet as a secondary tool, but one that you would use more readily”, although she added that no decision had been made. There was no immediate reaction in bond or currency markets to the Daly comments however. The US 10 year Treasury yield was 3bps lower on the day to 2.63% while the 10 year German bund fell 3bps to just 0.085% and the 10 year Japanese government bond was down 2bps to -0.03%.
Amidst relatively modest currency movements, the USD ended Friday marginally higher. The USD indices were up around 1% on the week, leaving them at their highest levels since early January, although they remain well contained within the broader trading ranges of the past six months. Recent economic data continues to paint a picture of relative US economic strength compared to other G10 currencies, even as the overall pace of US growth is slowing.
The top performing currency on the day was the Canadian dollar (+0.3%), which was boosted by a much larger than expected increase in employment in January. The Canadian unemployment rate ticked up, due to an increase in the participation rate, but wage growth was also higher than expected. The safe haven Japanese yen and Swiss franc were also slightly higher against the USD on the day, amidst more cautious risk sentiment.
The AUD came under pressure immediately after the release of the RBA’s Statement of Monetary Policy (SoMP). Despite Governor Lowe foreshadowing the downgrades to growth and inflation at his speech earlier in the week, the AUD fell from around 0.7090 before the release to 0.7060. The Statement noted that the probability of cutting or hiking was “more evenly balanced than previously”, although in the Outlook section, six of the seven risks mentioned were to the downside. There was no sense of policy change urgency, including no suggestion of a cut in the near future. The AUD retraced those losses over the remainder of the trading session to close the week at 0.7090, with a further surge in iron ore prices (to $94 during the Asian trading session – the highest level in 4½ years) assisting its recovery.
The NZD traded a relatively tight range on Friday, consolidating after the sharp fall in the wake of the disappointing NZ employment report on Thursday. It closed the week at 0.6745. Despite limited moves in the NZD, NZ rates continued to move sharply lower on Friday. NZ swap rates were 3 to 4.5bps lower across the curve, while the 10 year generic NZ government bond yield reached a record low of 2.1%. The decline in Australian rates on Friday after the SoMP and growing OCR rate cut expectations (the market almost fully-prices an OCR cut by the end of the year) fuelled the moves in NZ rates. Incredibly, the 5 year swap rate, at 1.9475%, is now trading a mere 4bps above the 90 day bank bill rate. The RBNZ MPS on Wednesday is the key event risk for both the NZ rates and currency markets, with the market priced for dovish messaging from the Bank.
Besides the RBNZ MPS, the week ahead sees the release of US CPI and retail sales while in Australia the NAB business survey is released. Australian business conditions fell sharply in December, pointing to a subdued growth outlook, and the survey will be closely watched for any potential bounce-back in January. Another weak reading would add to RBA rate cut expectations, and probably OCR rate expectations too. In politics, the US government is heading for another shutdown on the 15th unless a funding deal can be agreed beforehand (or President Trump uses his emergency powers). Talks between Republicans and Democrats to avert a shutdown broke down over the weekend according to Bloomberg.
Here's our summary of key events overnight that affect New Zealand, with news China is back after a long holiday only to find the cost of a core commodity it needs is very much higher.
But first, it is groundhog day in Washington with negotiations to fund the US Federal Government stalled just days before funds run out on their three-weeks-old previous agreement. The same sticking point; funds for extending the border wall.
Wall Street ended last week back where it started, unable to hold earlier gains. Earlier, European markets were lower. The week closed even lower in Tokyo which was down -2.0%. Shanghai will be back later today after their national holiday week, but if Hong Kong is a guide, they will return with not much net change.
In Canada, employers added +66,800 jobs in January, far better than the gain of +8,000 that analysts expected. The Canadian jobless rate ticked up however to 5.8% as more people sought work. The Canadian currency rose on the news. It was also bolstered by better-than-expected housing starts data.
And there was data out in Europe. The German trade data actually came in a bit stronger than expected with both exports and imports rising while their trade surplus eased back a bit. But French industrial production data was weak as expected in December but not as weak as the prior month. Italian industrial production data was similar.
China is returning to normal today after their Spring Festival week-long holiday. The mood will be interesting to assess. Many indicators are weak, but not all. The pace of official stimulus will get special attention. And China loves public-private partnerships (PPPs). They are reporting that in 2018, a total of 8,654 PPP projects had been registered, worth NZ$2.9 tln. The projects for which construction has started totaled 2,237, with these adding up to NZ$700 bln in investment.
The price of iron ore, especially in the key Chinese market, is rocketing higher. This is despite the China slowdown. The dam disaster in Brazil has triggered a sudden supply shortage, extended by Brazilian outrage at the miner which may further reduce shipments from more mines there while remediation work is undertaken. Brazil is Australia's largest supply rival to China.
But on the flip side, this now means there is a sudden drought in demand for iron ore carrying ships. The Baltic Dry index, which measures ship charter pricing, has plunged, now down to 2016 lows. This is a sudden -56% drop since the beginning of 2019.
In India, a general election will be held in the next 60 days or so and the reelection of prime minister Modi is not a certainty. With India rising as an economic power, more international attention will be focused on this likely-to-be fractious campaign. One aspect to watch is the extent that relationships with rival China play out. Another is growing unease over the pace of job creation.
The OECD is reporting that gross borrowings of member governments from the financial markets are set to reach a new record level in 2019 by exceeding US$11 tln. But the increase is confined to a few countries, particularly the United States. As QE is wound back, governments are switching to market funding sources. New Zealand is among a small group of members (including Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden) where the debt load is considered at "very low levels". If it wasn't for the US's voracious debt-funding appetite, the OECD would be reporting good overall progress in reducing this budget load.
The UST 10yr yield is lower at 2.63% and back to where it was at the end of January. Their 2-10 curve is just on +17 bps. The Australian Govt. 10yr yield is at 2.10% and holding at its new lower levels. The China Govt. 10yr yield will open this week at 3.15%, while the New Zealand Govt. 10yr yield is at 2.11% and a new all-time record low.
In fact, local wholesale swap rates fell sharply again on Friday and every duration out to seven years is also at new all-time record lows. We are being infected by an assumption that our OCR is more likely to follow the RBA down.
Gold is up +US$4 at US$1,314/oz.
US oil prices are unchanged at just under US$53/bbl while the Brent benchmark is just over US$62/bbl.
The Kiwi dollar is starting the week little changed in offshore markets at 67.4 USc. On the cross rates we are at 95.1 AUc, and at 59.6 euro cents. That leaves the TWI-5 at 71.9, about where it has been for a few days.
Bitcoin is up +7.5% to US$3,611 and taking it back over NZ$5,000 for the first time in two weeks. This rate is charted in the exchange rate set below.
