6 times Macron gave other leaders advice, while boasting an approval rating of… under 30% Cache Translate Page | French President Emmanuel Macron is not shy about dishing out advice to his international counterparts but, with an approval rating at home hovering in the late 20s, is he really the person to be doling out instructions to others? No matter the international crisis, Macron has been there to impart his wisdom, giving guidance and schooling to other world leaders on their domestic problems. When it comes to criticisms directed at him, however, it appears Macron is less receptive. This week, after French anti-government Yellow Vest protesters met with top Italian officials who criticized his leadership (admittedly in undiplomatic terms), Macron instantly recalled France’s ambassador from Rome, the critiques having gotten under his skin. Here’s a look at six times Macron was the one dispensing unsolicited advice. 1. Venezuela’s Maduro is ‘illegitimate’Macron has been quick to denounce Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as “illegitimate” and to throw his support behind opposition leader Juan Guaido. As we’ve seen, though, expressions of doubt about his own legitimacy are shot down by Macron’s government as “outrageous” – despite the French president commanding a domestic approval rating of around 30 percent. In fact, his approval rating dipped as low as 18 percent in early December. 2. Lectures on ‘human rights’ in EgyptOn a recent visit to Cairo, Macron warned his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to do more to protect “human rights” and “individual dignity.” Meanwhile, back in France, anti-government protesters were being violently beaten on the streets, in scenes which Macron surely would have condemned had they taken place anywhere else. It looks as though his lecture on human rights was all talk, anyway, considering that France still serves as Egypts top supplier of military and security equipment. 3. Wading into Japanese legal mattersMacron also chided Japan for the “too long and too hard” detention of Carlos Ghosn, the former Nissan chairman and French citizen who was detained there in November for allegedly underreporting his income and transferring personal losses to the company. If the tables were turned, it’s likely Macron would regard similar comments about decisions of the French justice system as foreign meddling. Macron also confidently suggested a replacement for Ghosn in comments that irked Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, who told reporters that governments shouldn’t be getting involved. 4. ‘Timely’ decision to mark Armenian GenocideIn a move that angered Turkey, Macron on Wednesday declared April 24 a day for the commemoration in France of the Armenian genocide, saying that France was a country that “knows how to look history in the face.” While the genocide commemoration is not shocking in itself, given that many countries, including Russia, recognize the Armenian Genocide (which Turkey disputes), Ankara accused Macron of exploiting the issue for political gain. Macron happened to be “afflicted by political problems in his own country and is trying to save the day by turning historical events into a political matter,” Turkish Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalın noted. 5. Chastising Trump over Syria withdrawalMacron slammed US President Donald Trump’s decision in December to withdraw troops from Syria, saying he “very deeply” regretted Trump’s decision. Macron said that, as allies, France and the US should “fight shoulder to shoulder” and that “an ally should be dependable.” Trump has not been reluctant to criticize Macron either, however, even tweeting about the French president’s dismally low approval rating. 6. ‘Arrogant’ advice fest in AfricaMacron also faced major criticism on a trip to Africa last year, during which he advised Algeria to stop focusing on its colonial past and mocked Burkina Faso’s president over the country’s energy problems – comments which his former presidential rival criticized as “arrogant” and “bordering on racism.” On the same trip, Macron told a student that she should “applaud” French soldiers, said the continent’s problems were “civilizational” – and told African women that they have too many children. https://www.rt.com/news/450929-macron-lectured-venezuela-egypt-africa-trump/ |

Obviously some culinary fashions change. We no longer eat roast swan, as the Elizabethans did, and are more likely to have Christmas turkey than Bob Cratchet's goose. But yes, we still eat roast lamb. (In Tallinn's old city, you can even enjoy a decent bowl of elk stew.) And people did eat potatoes centuries ago; it's just that those people were in the new world, not Europe. The potato is indigenous to the new world.
So the short answer is that you have no idea whether hamburgers will survive 200 years from now. My guess is they will, because Russian kotlety and Lebanese kofta-kebabs. The idea of ground/tenderized meat appears in lots of cultures.
Oh, and methinks the TNG characters would be a lot less vegan if they couldn't synthesize meat. (There is a startup in the Bay Area that claims to be able to synthesize meat at a molecular level now.) Indeed, we saw them eating fresh eggs in one of the season two episodes. |

Crawling to the Americans Cache Translate Page | The May Government’s recognition of the American lackey, Juan Guaidó, as ‘interim president’ of Venezuela is the latest episode in what some British politicians still shamefully call the “special relationship” with the USA. The weakness of the British Government makes this meaningless gesture, which was given in the hope of future reward from the Trump administration, pointless. But crawling to the Americans comes as second nature to those sections of the ruling class who believe that their global interests are best preserved through the might of US imperialism. Though the Trump administration has widened existing divisions within America’s ruling circles over immigration and minority rights, the entire American ruling class wants to establish US hegemony over the world. What divides them is how to achieve it. Democrat leaders still believe in the ‘new world order’ although they now prefer to call it ‘globalisation’. Trump, on the other hand, represents circles who want to cut back US military expenditure in Europe and north-east Asia so that they can concentrate on controlling the global energy market by taking over the entire Middle East and restoring US imperialism’s hegemony over south and central America. This is why they’re itching to get their greedy hands on Venezuela's vast oil reserves, the biggest in the world. When it suits them American, British and Franco-German imperialists will bang the drum of “human rights”. So reading from the American script the Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, says that: “The people of Venezuela have suffered enough. It is time for a new start, with free and fair elections in accordance with international democratic standards. The oppression of the illegitimate, kleptocratic Maduro regime must end. Those who continue to violate the human rights of ordinary Venezuelans under an illegitimate regime will be called to account. The Venezuelan people deserve a better future.” The usual lies. But few are taken in these days. Attempts to build another “international coalition” to justify American military intervention and “regime change” have failed at the United Nations and the Organisation of American States. Ten members of the European Union have refused to endorse Juan Guaidó’s empty claim and Turkey has broken ranks with NATO to back the elected Maduro government that is also supported by Russia, People’s China, India, Cuba and Democratic Korea, as well as most of the Third World. Those in favour of imperialist aggression are the most aggressive and greedy sections of the capitalist and landowning class. They looted and enslaved Africa and Asia in the 19th century, killing millions on their way. They are the people who sent millions to their deaths in two world wars to preserve and increase their fortunes. They started the Korean War and the American interventions in Indo-China during the Cold War. These are the people who brought death and destruction in the name of “regime change” in Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya. They are the ones behind the sectarian gunmen who tried the same in Syria. They are the kind who live the life of Roman Emperors in their grand houses whilst workers slave in their factories for pennies and die broken and destitute in the slums of the great cities of the imperialist heartlands. Now they want to push the clock back in Venezuela. The governance of Venezuela is a matter for the Venezuelan people alone to determine. They’re going to fight to defend their revolution, We must stand by them and the legitimate government of the Bolivarian republic. |

Comment on We’re all Jewish Supremacists Now: Israeli politics, a guide for the perplexed by YoniFalic Cache Translate Page | It is necessary to review basic legal principle before discussing
1) Nuremberg IMT,
2) why the State of Israel is a criminal state founded after Auschwitz and after Nuremberg IMT, and
3) why the colonial-settler invader-genocidaire conglomeration must be removed completely to give relief to the native population that suffered and continues to suffer genocide at the hands of the criminal conglomeration.
Anglo-American criminal law follows the principle of criminal liability as Edward Coke stated it in the 17th century.
An act does not create culpability unless intent be (characteristically) culpable.
Because "sit" is characteristic subjunctive, this principle should be stated without negations in English.
An act creates culpability (in proportion) as the intent is culpable.
Example.
Homicide receives different or no punishment if the intent is found to be:
1) intentional with premeditation,
2) intentional without premeditation,
3) voluntary without premeditation but with mentally defective intent,
4) involuntary without premeditation without intent but with recklessness,
5) etc.
All the crimes with which the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal charged Nazis were well defined at the time of Nuremberg IMT, and those punished met existing customary and covenantal international legal standards of actus reus and mens rea.
The prosecution pointed out either implicitly or explicitly that the criminal mens rea was beyond what had previously charged to accused war criminals, and in some cases the judges agreed in written decisions.
Raphael Lemkin wrote this mens reior or even mens reissima into his proposed international definition of genocide.
Thus we consider Nuremberg IMT the starting point for the international anti-genocide legal regime.
Caselaw of judges of international tribunals from the time period between the Nuremberg IMT and time point at which the International Convention for the Prevention and the Punishment of the Crime of Genocide went into effect is customary international antigenocide law.
States and individuals had committed the crime of genocide before the Nuremberg IMT, but the mens rea had never been defined.
One example is Czarist treatment of the Circassian Muslim population.
Sometime Turks argue that the three Pashas during the WW1 period did not have requisite intent and thus there was no Ottoman genocide. That claim is crap. The problem probably lies in disparate discussion of the different victims of the time period. Balkan states, whose citizens were former Ottoman Christian and Muslim subjects committed an orgy of genocide on their Muslim citizens on independence. Until people begin to discuss Muslim victims of genocide as Christian victims of genocide are discussed, Turkey (and Turks in general) won't acknowledge the genocide of Armenians.
While the white racist European Slavo-Turk invaders committed acts of genocide before 1947-8 (Zionist murder gangs and death squads of 30s provide numerous examples), in 47-8 Zionists put into effect plans that they had been developing since the 1880s. Zionist acti rei and mens rei are well documented -- actually much better than German Nazi acti rei and mens rea.
[Of course, only a moron, ignoramus, or liar denies German Nazi mens rea associated with genocidal acts before the Holocaust or associated with the Holocaust itself.]
Zionists of 47-8 were in every way as culpable as German Nazis. An international military tribunal should have been convened, and a lot of the Zionist leadership should have been hanged just like many of the German Nazi leaders were hanged.
And here is the problem with failing both to abolish the white racist genocidal Slavo-Turk invader state and also to remove the criminal colonial-settler invader-genocidaire population.
How can the world take the international anti-genocide legal regime seriously as long as white racist genocidal European Slavo-Turks receive a pass to commit genocide?
There is no statute of limitations on genocide.
The criminal conglomeration is just as guilty today as it was in 48 (already after the starting point of the international anti-genocide legal regime). The criminal conglomeration must be removed because to do otherwise says that genocidaires win if they can delay their punishment long enough.
<b>Creating respect for the international anti-genocide legal regime requires abolishing the State of Israel. There is no way around this point.</b>
As for US citizens that relocate to the State of Israel, 18 U.S. Code § 1091 (Genocide) is explicitly clear. Those that don't take part in violence might not be guilty under § 1091 (a), but they are certainly guilty under § 1091 (c) & (d).
If I were the prosecutor, I would prosecute such people to the maximum, and I would expect the judge to sentence such people to the maximum.
We already have an example of the result if such prosecution and punishment does not take place.
The USA would be much better off today if 50 - 100,000 irredentist former Confederates had been hanged in the decade after the Civil War. |

Sigh. In my prayers Cache Translate Page | I had heard Asia Bibi had found asylum in Canada with her family, but now AlJ says that the authorities are stopping her from leaving even though the courts said she could. (She had been sentenced to death for blasphemy in Pakistan.. full story at link). ----------------------------------- China is not only persecuting the Chinese house churches and making the newfangled Catholic church put Chinese values over God's laws, but the persecution of their Muslim Uighur minorities are worse: they are being sent to "re-education camps. ALJ link. --------------------------- the spin on late term abortion of babies who could live outside their moms is criticizing those who say they are killing babies, including pointing to the remark of the Pediatric neurologist who is governor of Virginia. The "fact checkers' say they aren't killing babies, but if you read what the governor said, it implied if the kid was born alive, they would not "resuscitate it" or treat it if mom didn't want the kid to be treated. Fact check: what the governor describes often means putting the kid into the utility room with the medical waste until it dies of hypothermia, not cutting it's spinal cord a la Gosnell, so technically their fact check is true. GetReligion blog discusses how the press distorts the story. Oedipus, call your office. The fine line between rejecting treatment that won't work and providing only comfort care and not aggressively treating a person (not just babies but the handicapped and elderly) is a delicate line, but I won't bore you with the nuances here, or relate many sorrowful stories of those I have cared for. |

Mental Health and Mitzvot: A Source Sheet Cache Translate Page | Yes, I know I haven't posted here in forever. It's not for lack of things to say... In any case: I'm scheduled to give a shiur this Monday evening on "Mental Health and Mitzvot". Specifically, I expect to look at four ways in which halachah addresses mental illness as a reason for exemption from the Torah's obligations. Because I'm including some material which people may not be familiar with, I thought I would post the source sheet here, for those who still frequent these cobwebbed webpages. I expect to post a recording of the shiur on YUTorah.org. Cases (1) Susan, age 14, is undergoing nutritional rehabilitative therapy for life-threatening anorexia; her treatment team helps her develop healthy eating habits through regular meals, while she works on her underlying emotional issues. Yom Kippur is coming; must Susan fast? (2) David, age 55, has been in counseling for 30 years for anxiety attributed to lifelong emotional abuse by his father. The abuse was largely verbal, through criticism and insults, from early childhood through the present. David’s father passes away; is David obligated to sit shivah? (3) Samantha, age 25, is hospitalized with schizophrenia; her doctors believe that her delusions place her at risk of self-harm. Is Samantha’s family obligated to arrange kosher food for Samantha? (4) Avraham, age 18, experiences severe OCD, with a particular manifestation in the area of prayer. He cannot complete key lines, like the Shema, without hesitation and repetition which drag on for more than an hour at a time. During the treatment process, Avraham’s psychologist would like to try ERP, instructing Avraham to recite prayers just one time, even if the pronunciation or level of concentration are halachically inappropriate, and keep going. Is this acceptable? Argument 1 for Overriding Halachic Imperatives: Halachah Endangers Health 1. If someone is pursued by non-Jews, bandits or ruach raah, for any of these someone [else] may cause himself suffering by fasting [on Shabbat]. Rashi: The spirit of a sheid enters him, and he runs about; [one prays] lest he drown in a river or fall to his death. 2. Perhaps there is room to debate regarding his illness: If doctors were to identify a life-saving issue, such as that he might respond to pain with suicide, or that he might violate civil law, not listen to the police, and resist such that they might kill him, or that the illness itself is dangerous such that his brain is damaged, and he can only be healed there… 3. Regarding a woman who became insane after the birth of her two children, such that the doctors forbid further pregnancy. May she use contraception? Certainly, his honour is correct; insanity is dangerous not only for herself, but also for her small children. Even one whose insanity does not currently incline toward harm could still change, wanting to harm herself or her children, Gd forbid, and one cannot stand guard for this. Therefore, one should permit her… 4. And in Haameik She’eilahhe explains that their debate depends upon the debate of Ben Petura and Rabbi Akiva [regarding choosing between saving one’s self and saving others]… This is very shocking for me, for one could not say that this case involves actual danger to life, that the others would die of thirst! How could Rabbi Yosi say that their laundry precedes the survival of others? And even though dirty clothes can trigger depression, still, this is not at all “imminent danger” and it is not even considered potential danger, but something which could evolve into danger… 5. Still, we conclude that from most authorities it seems clear that keeping him with non-Jews is not the same as personally feeding him [non-kosher food]… If so, one may do this, so long as they remove him when he reaches 13 and one day. 6. One may trample snow without concern, even though some snow must melt when he walks. Still, since this is the way of walking, prohibiting this is not relevant; we would be locked inside all winter, and they did not make such decrees… 7. I saw that Rabbi Isser Yehudah Unterman wrote the following, after distinguishing between [the levels of danger involved for] a blind person and an epileptic: I then thought that one should not distinguish between them, and there is substantive danger for the blind person as well, such that healing him of blindness would be called 'saving a life'. It would be impossible for the blind person to stay at home eternally, and various dangers would lie in wait for him on the street. Further, he must ascend and descend stairs, and danger is not absent… 8. In truth, a great scholar pointed out to me that if withholding tefillin could pain the patient, as he is depressed about [missing] the chance to don tefillin, and he is intensely Gd-fearing, and he is concerned about being in the category of “the head that does not don tefillin”, Gd forbid, and this depression could catalyze weakness of the patient’s health, then one may be lenient to bring tefillin with him. And he showed me that the Lubavitcher Rebbe wrote thus to him regarding a patient where there was a question of permitting him to learn and study… Argument 2 for Overriding Halachic Imperatives: Halachah Imposes a Great Burden 9. Rav Yehudah said, citing Rav: One who finds shaatnez in his own garment should remove it, even in the market. "There is neither wisdom nor understanding nor counsel opposite Gd (Proverbs 21:30)" – where there is desecration of Gd, we do not give honour to the great. But we have learned, “After burying the body, when returning, if they have two paths, one tahor and one tamei, if [the mourner] takes the tahor path then they escort him on the tahor path, if he takes the tamei path then they escort him on the tamei path, for his honour.” Why? Cite Proverbs 21:30! Rabbi Abba explained: This is a beit hapras, which is only impure rabbinically. 10. See the Pri Megadim, who contends that the law permits cutting the splinter by hand to pick one's teeth where he has no other way to pick his teeth. It is as we have written, that cutting the splinter by hand is only rabbinically prohibited. 11. With the laws of chatzitzah, one should not be overly strict, seeking doubts with which to disqualify immersion for minor matters. There would be no end to this… One should not insert his head into serious doubts, which are interminable. 12. Rabbi Yochanan said: All must rise for the nasi, other than a mourner or one who is ill. Argument 3 for Overriding Halachic Imperatives: The Patient is Exempt 13. “Who is a shoteh? One who travels alone at night, and who sleeps in a cemetery, and who tears his clothing.” Rav Huna said: One who displays all of these at once. Rabbi Yochanan said: Even one of these behaviours. But what is the case? If he acts apparently irrationally, even one [act] should suffice! If he does not act irrationally, even all of them would not suffice! No; this is where he acts apparently irrationally, but one could explain [each symptom in a rational way]… Once he performs all of them, it is like an animal that gores an ox, a donkey and a camel; it is now identified as dangerous for all. Rav Pappa said: Had Rav Huna heard the lesson, "Who is a shoteh? One who destroys that which people give him," he would have recanted. Does Rav Pappa mean he would have recanted from listing the trait of tearing his clothing because it is similar, or that he would have recanted from all of them? This remains unclarified. 14. Rabbi Yosef Karo (16th century Israel), Beit Yosef Even haEzer It would appear that one of the four behaviours mentioned in the Talmud would render a person a shoteh, but performing other irrational acts would leave a person in his presumed status of sanity… but from the Rambam, who did not mention these acts and only said, "one whose mind is torn… in some matter," it sounds as though the four items taught here are not specific, and are only examples, and other behaviours could also do it. It appears that he was driven to state thus from the fact that the former source listed three behaviours and did not list "destroys that which people give him," and the latter source listed "destroys that which people give him" and did not mention the other three… 15. Certainly, there is a difference between a shoteh and one who is exceptionally unintelligent – for being a shoteh is not about powers of understanding his affairs. Even one who is able to understand matters may have a confused, torn mind, meaning that he knows and understands that there are differences between the things he sees, but he errs in his delusions, and his delusions change in very brief periods of time… 16. Rabbi Yosef Karo (16th century Israel), Shulchan Aruch Choshen Mishpat 35:8 שוטה, פסול. ולא שוטה שהוא הולך ערום ומשבר כלים וזורק אבנים בלבד, (אלא) כל מי שנטרפה דעתו ונמצאת דעתו משובשת תמיד בדבר מהדברים, אף על פי שהוא מדבר ושואל כענין בשאר דברים, הרי זה פסול, ובכלל שוטים יחשב. A shoteh is disqualified [from testifying]. This is not only a shoteh who wanders without clothing and breaks implements and throws stones, but anyone whose mind is torn, so that his mind is confused perpetually on some matter, even though he speaks and inquires on point in other areas. He is disqualified, and considered a shoteh. 17. Rabbi Moshe Sofer (18th century Hungary), Chatam Sofer Even haEzer 2:2 הנה לדון בדיני השוטים א"א כ"א בראיית עיני הדיין המבין מה טיבו ומהותו וא"א לברר בכתב מה ענינו וטבעו ומהותו וכמ"ש הרמב"ם פ"ט מה' עדות ואין לדיין אלא מה שעיניו רואות Judging in the matter of shotimis impossible other than through the eyes of a judge who understands his nature. One cannot clarify his nature in writing. As the Rambam wrote), "The judge only has what his eyes see." 18. Rabbi Baruch Frankel-Teomim (18th-19thcenturies Galicia, Moravia), Ateret Chachamim, Even haEzer His honour’s wish to innovate that if irrationality derives from illness of black bile, which we call ‘melancholy’, then he is not a shoteh, is not clear to me. The class of ‘melancholy’ includes people who are entirely irrational, as is known to anyone who has some knowledge of the texts composed about this… As a result, if someone with ‘melancholy’ displays perpetual behaviour in a matter which demonstrates a torn mind, he certainly is within Rambam’s category of shoteh… regardless of the cause. 19. Those who are especially foolish [peti], who do not recognize contradictory statements and do not understand matters as other normal people do. Also, those who are confused and hasty in their minds, and those who are especially foolish, are in the category of shotim. It is as the judge sees it; one cannot specify a mindset in writing. 20. Rabbi Yehoshua Falk (16th century Poland), Sefer Meirat Einayim, Choshen Mishpat 35:22 המבוהלים והנחפזים בדעתם והמשתגעים ביותר "Those who are confused and hasty in their minds, and who are especially foolish" – It appears that the meaning of all of these is that they are not patient in their affairs. They perform all of their deeds hastily, not understanding the end of the matter and goal of the act. Therefore, this is also considered foolishness and irrationality. 21. Rabbi Shemuel de Medina (16th century Turkey), Even haEzer It appears that none are more confused and hasty than a person who is struck with powerful fever; he is a shoteh, biblically disqualified. 22. People of black bile who do not perform any irrational acts, but only sit in sadness, far from human company, and do not seek to eat but do eat when given food, and do not initiate conversation but respond a little when addressed, and do not speak irrationally, one should analyze whether they have the status of shoteh, or not. Logically, there is no sign of irrationality here, only a disease of sadness. It depends on the court’s view, to understand his ways and their causes. Argument 4 for Overriding Halachic Imperatives: Enabling Future Observance 23. If the deduction [teaching that we violate Shabbat to save lives] is from “’And he shall live by them’ – and not die by them,” this includes healing the emotionally ill, for Devarim 30 speaks explicitly, “to love Hashem your Gd, to listen to His voice and adhere to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days.” As long as he is a shoteh, he is exempt from all of the Torah’s mitzvot… And so is clear within the other exegesis brought in Yoma, from Rabbi Shimon ben Menasya, who learns the law of overriding Shabbat to save lives from Shemot 31, “And the Children of Israel shall observe Shabbat” – Desecrate one Shabbat for him, so that he will observe many Shabbatot. It is explicit that the license to save lives is to enable future fulfillment of mitzvot, for if we would not overturn the debris for him, he could not fulfill mitzvot in the future. If so, in a case where he is physically healthy but emotionally ill, and today he cannot fulfill mitzvot because a shoteh is exempt from all of the mitzvot, it is a mitzvah to desecrate Shabbat for him, so that he will observe many Shabbatot. This is simple and clear, according to this exegesis. Application to our cases 24. Rabbi Asher Weiss (21st century Israel), Halachik Challenges in Dealing With Mental Illness, 11/24/16 https://www.yutorah.org/sidebar/lecture.cfm/867170, 21:40-22:50 Many times in the past I paskened that girls suffering from anorexia could eat normally on Yom Kippur. Not l’shiurim [minimal amounts, below the standard of ‘eating’]. Because even though there is no direct sakkanah [danger], it’s a terrible ailment, and people, and girls, die from anorexia, to my dismay. I personally know a few families that lost children to this terrible malady. And the way to treat them is difficult, and it’s a long haul, and it takes a long time to design a plan of eating. And any interference, any interruption with that pattern could set the patient back months, or years, and ultimately could endanger the patient’s life. So it does seem to be a chiddush [novelty] to many, and some rabbonim didn’t really agree with my psak, but my psak was that girls suffering from anorexia, Yom Kippur, should eat in the normal pattern that was worked out in the personal, tailored plan for them, and they should not try to eat l’shiurim. 25. Rambam (12th century Egypt), Mishneh Torah, Laws of the Mourner 1:1 ואין אבילות מן התורה אלא ביום ראשון בלבד שהוא יום המיתה ויום הקבורה, אבל שאר השבעה ימים אינו דין תורה... There is no biblical law of mourning other than on the first day, if it is the day of death and burial. The rest of the seven days are not biblical law…

Co-Sponsors: UN Watch, Stand With Us, Association Suisse-Israël (& many more coming soon) On March 18, 2019, the U.N. Human Rights Council will launch an unprecedented assault on Israel and their own founding principles: • The UNHRC will release the report of their Commission of Inquiry into Israel’s “large-scale assault” on “civilian” Palestinian protesters at the Gaza border. • The UNHRC will release a report on their Blacklist of companies who do business over the Green Line, a thinly veiled form of anti-Israel BDS. • The UNHRC will release another five reports singling out Israel — the only democracy in the Middle East — and yet none on gross abuses committed by China, Turkey, Cuba, and other of the world’s worst regimes. Enough is enough. It’s time for us to stand up and cry out against the injustice of the U.N.’s relentless bias and demonization of the Jewish nation, against the betrayal of their own founding values. On March 18th, we need you to stand up and be counted. Join us in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday, March 18, 2019, at 12:30 pm, at the Place des Nations facing the UN Human Rights Council. Why MMT (Ultimately) Doesn't Matter Cache Translate Page | Authored by Peter Earle via The American Institute for Economic Research, Last year, internet searches for Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) numbered approximately 100 per month; in the years and decades before that, the weekly total searches numbered mostly in single digits. Yet in the first few weeks of this year, searches have topped 100 per day and seem to be on an uptrend. People who’ve never heard the term “chartalism” are speaking — and acting — as if a new and groundbreaking discovery has been made; “a new kind of science” in the realm of economics, situated neatly upon the doorsill of a new decade. It’s perplexing to see a theory which holds that governments can’t really go broke because they can always create more currency capture imaginations, if still largely on the periphery of discourse. For years, Austrian School perspectives have been taken to task for failing to “predict” (which, in fact, they have and continue to). Yet MMT not only doesn’t predict anything; it fails to explain the state of nature better than existing, prevailing models. Social science, like its physical counterpart, advances by virtue of two key determinants: phenomenological explanations which are demonstrably superior to existing ones, and funerals. Even neoclassical economists, regularly critical of Austrian, monetarist and other views, hold that — as has been demonstrated in every era, within every culture, and upon every continent — bad monetary and/or fiscal policies ultimately result in economic breakdown and destitution. Whether the rapid decline and ultimate disappearance of the individual propensity to hold a fiat currency are purely monetary, entirely psychological, or a combination of the two, the circumstances leading to it reappears consistently throughout history. Every one of the scores of known cases of hyperinflation dating back over 700 years bears witness to a reckless, breakneck campaign of money creation preceding it. Blaming psychology for hyperinflationary episodes also, and far more ominously, hints at the same conclusion which virtually all collectivist governments come to after their starry-eyed schemes initially fail: that human nature, not the hubris that attends attempts to overthrow the fundamentals of supply and demand, is at fault. And thus that human beings, and not policy, needforceful readjustment. Holding that inflation — of either the ‘vanilla’ or hyper- varieties — is overwhelmingly the product of wars or exogenous events is also wholly misleading. It is always and only the political reaction to exogenous events which determines economic outcomes. Such an approach also bypasses the issue of the garden variety of inflationary outbreak. To be sure, while it would surely not be as ruinous nor as fast-acting as classic hyperinflation, a rise in inflation to a “mere” 8%, 15%, or 20% per annum would have a sizably adverse impact upon individuals living on fixed incomes, financial markets, and general economic calculation: the functioning of firms, markets for goods and services, and the financial choices of families, communities, and organizations. Furthermore, MMT is invariably (and almost exclusively) invoked proximate to incomprehensibly expensive government program proposals: a so-called Jobs Guarantee (estimated cost approaching, and likely exceeding, $1T per year), “Medicare for All” (estimated cost: $32T over ten years), and a “Green New Deal” (estimated costs ranging from $7T to $13T to $49T to implement). (Also: considering that MMT contemplates a “closed loop” whereby money is created and later taxed away, it is likely that any practical implementation will necessarily subsume cashlesseconomy diktats.) Add to all of this the bunker mentality of many MMT proponents, who frequently refuse to discuss the assumptions upon which MMT operates by dismissing those who question them as disingenuous – and there is more than enough reason to suspect that MMT is not new, far from scientific, and explains nothing. It is at best a scientistic vehicle that exists only to provide an academic imprimatur for unlimited government spending. Yet I’m not worried about MMT. Actually, I am - a little. History demonstrates that betting against the willingness of people - Americans, specifically, who have the greatest record of fawning over political and economic views which defenestrate the very basis of the prosperity which gives both the leisure time and technological reach to permit intellectual flights of fancy - to embrace that which flies in the face of demonstrable evidence, is a sucker's bet. One of the major dangers of powerful states - indeed, states in general - is that with a single vote or the stroke of a pen a lot of damage can be done. But any pain will only be temporary. It comes down to one word: Bitcoin. Actually, I should be more specific: crypto. At this very moment, there are hundreds of independent teams of developers in dorm rooms, garages, basements, apartments, rented offices, and other such locations working on both subtle tweaks to existing cryptocurrency issues and wholly new coins and assets: thousands, maybe tens of thousands of individuals, all over the world, silently but inexorably expanding the bounds within which individuals can extricate and divorce their personal lives from the inimical policy implementations of expanding states. At ten years old, the list of places where Bitcoin — and crypto more generally — has been the single bulwark between people and utter ruin grows annually. As long ago as 2013, Bitcoin (then less than $100) surged as individuals banked in Cyprus used it to escape the bank levy — a ploy in which politicians explicitly sought to seize private deposits in order to paper over their policy errors and banks’ losses owing to them. All across Africa, South America, and Asia — and regardless of Bitcoin's exchange rate at the time — the unbanked have, owing to the ubiquity of mobile and cell phone ownership, been able to engage in saving, consuming, remittances and entrepreneurialism despite previously insurmountable sanctions, financial surveillance, and fees associated with transfers, banking, etc. In Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Turkey, and anywhere else that economic hardships have surfaced — over time, or overnight — Bitcoin and crypto more generally have given individuals the opportunity to safeguard their economic liberty and in some cases their very lives. In places where economic life is viable but burdensome, cryptocurrency access provides an outlet. Time may prove this incorrect, but at present MMT seems to be little more than a pernicious, academically-garbed attempt to overcome the unwelcome (and repeatedly evinced) fact that governments are as tied to economic limits as firms and individuals are. But a more fundamental truth precedes this: if implemented, and whether at that time Bitcoin, another crypto issue, or another, yet-undiscovered innovation has surfaced, liberty will always find a way to triumph — even when the utopian plans of authoritarian regimes are briefly in control. |

Comment on Mother’s Day Cake by JD Mosello Cache Translate Page | Mother's Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of Mother's Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914.
Origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. But the roots of Mother's Day history can also be traced in UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US. Traditionally children brought with them gifts and a special fruit cake or fruit-filled pastry called a simnel.
Today Mothers Day is celebrated in several countries including US, UK, India, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Mexico, Canada, China, Japan and Belgium. People take the day as an opportunity to pay tribute to their mothers and thank them for all their love and support. There is a tradition of gifting flowers, cards, cakes and other culinary treats to Moms on Mother's Day. |

Bolivia rejects Guaido's welcoming of US military intervention in Venezuela Cache Translate Page | [Bolivia], Feb 10 (ANI): Bolivia has rejected self-proclaimed President Juan Guaido's openness towards a US military intervention in Venezuela amid the ongoing political turmoil in the South American nation. "We reject the statements by the self-proclaimed Juan Guaidó who welcomes a US military intervention in Venezuela. I wonder what the brother Presidents who recognised him have to say about such incitement to war in Latin America," Evo Morales Ayma, President of Bolivia, tweeted on Sunday. Ayma's statement comes close on the heels of Guaido refusing to completely eliminate the possibility of authorising the United States for a military intervention to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. On January 23, Guaido proclaimed himself to be the President of Venezuela, amid cheering protesters who supported Maduro's ouster. The United States immediately lent their support to Guaido, recognising him as the official interim President, a move which has since been backed by several Latin American and European countries. However, countries like China, Russia, Turkey, amongst others, have slammed foreign intervention in Caracas' internal affairs while supporting Maduro's leadership. (ANI) |
Death toll rises to 21 in Istanbul building collapse Cache Translate Page | [Turkey], Feb 10 (ANI): Twenty one people died after an eight-storeyed building collapsed in Istanbul, the Turkish Interior Ministry reported on Saturday (local time). Xinhua quoted Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, while addressing a crisis centre near the affected site in Kartal district, as confirming that at least 14 injured were rescued from the wreckage since the incident took place on Wednesday. The Interior minister added that rescue operations were continuing for almost 74 hours after the incident, as cranes carrying heavy boulders of concrete kept on clearing the spot in order to reach out to the injured as soon as possible. Earlier on Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan paid a visit to the site and blamed the authorities need to learn a lesson from the unfortunate incident. "We have a great number of lessons to learn from this," channel NewsAsia quote the President while addressing to the media, adding, "We will take the necessary measures". Later, the President also visited the victims in the hospital and condoled their loss of property as well as their near and dear ones. The local media further reported that the three storeys out of the total eight in the apartment were built illegally and without the permission of municipal authorities. (ANI) |

Escobar: Are The Neocons Ready For Their Tropical Vietnam? Cache Translate Page | Authored by Pepe Escobar via The Strategic Culture Foundation, Cold War 2.0 has hit South America with a bang – pitting the US and expected minions against the four key pillars of in-progress Eurasia integration: Russia, China, Iran and Turkey. It’s the oil, stupid. But there’s way more than meets the (oily) eye. Caracas has committed the ultimate cardinal sin in the eyes of Exceptionalistan; oil trading bypassing the US dollar or US-controlled exchanges. Remember Iraq. Remember Libya. Yet Iran is also doing it. Turkey is doing it. Russia is – partially – on the way. And China will eventually trade all its energy in petroyuan. With Venezuela adopting the petro crypto-currency and the sovereign bolivar, already last year the Trump administration had sanctioned Caracas off the international financial system. No wonder Caracas is supported by China, Russia and Iran. They are the real hardcore troika – not psycho-killer John Bolton’s cartoonish “troika of tyranny” – fighting against the Trump administration’s energy dominance strategy, which consists essentially in aiming at the total lock down of oil trading in petrodollars, forever. Venezuela is a key cog in the machine. Psycho killer Bolton admitted it on the record; “It will make a big difference to the United States economically if we could have American oil companies invest in and produce the oil capabilities in Venezuela.” It’s not a matter of just letting ExxonMobil take over Venezuela’s massive oil reserves – the largest on the planet. The key is to monopolize their exploitation in US dollars, benefitting a few Big Oil billionaires. Once again, the curse of natural resources is in play. Venezuela must not be allowed to profit from its wealth on its own terms; thus, Exceptionalistan has ruled that the Venezuelan state must be shattered. In the end, this is all about economic war. Cue to the US Treasury Department imposing new sanctions on PDVSA that amount to a de facto oil embargo against Venezuela. Economic war reduxBy now it’s firmly established what happened in Caracas was not a color revolution but an old-school US-promoted regime change coup using local comprador elites, installing as “interim president” an unknown quantity, Juan Guaido, with his Obama choirboy looks masking extreme right-wing credentials. Everyone remembers “Assad must go”. The first stage in the Syrian color revolution was the instigation of civil war, followed by a war by proxy via multinational jihadi mercenaries. As Thierry Meyssan has noted, the role of the Arab League then is performed by the OAS now. And the role of Friends of Syria – now lying in the dustbin of history – is now performed by the Lima group, the club of Washington’s vassals. Instead of al-Nusra “moderate rebels”, we may have Colombian – or assorted Emirati-trained – “moderate rebel” mercenaries. Contrary to Western corporate media fake news, the latest elections in Venezuela were absolutely legitimate. There was no way to tamper with the made in Taiwan electronic voting machines. The ruling Socialist Party got 70 percent of the votes; the opposition, with many parties boycotting it, got 30 percent. A serious delegation of the Latin American Council of Electoral Experts (CEELA) was adamant; the election reflected “peacefully and without problems, the will of Venezuelan citizens”. The American embargo may be vicious. In parallel, Maduro’s government may have been supremely incompetent in not diversifying the economy and investing in food self-sufficiency. Major food importers, speculating like there’s no tomorrow, are making a killing. Still, reliable sources in Caracas tell that the barrios – the popular neighborhoods – remain largely peaceful. In a country where a full tank of gas still costs less than a can of Coke, there’s no question the chronic shortages of food and medicines in local clinics have forced at least two million people to leave Venezuela. But the key enforcing factor is the US embargo. The UN rapporteur to Venezuela, expert on international law, and former secretary of the UN Human Rights Council, Alfred de Zayas, goes straight to the point; much more than engaging in the proverbial demonization of Maduro, Washington is waging “economic war” against a whole nation. It’s enlightening to see how the “Venezuelan people” see the charade. In a poll conducted by Hinterlaces even before the Trump administration coup/regime change wet dream, 86% of Venezuelans said they were against any sort of US intervention, military or not, And 81% of Venezuelans said they were against US sanctions. So much for “benign” foreign interference on behalf of “democracy” and “human rights”. The Russia-China factorAnalyses by informed observers such as Eva Golinger and most of all, the Mision Verdad collective are extremely helpful. What’s certain, in true Empire of Chaos mode, is that the American playbook, beyond the embargo and sabotage, is to foment civil war. Dodgy “armed groups” have been active in the Caracas barrios, acting in the dead of night and amplifying “social unrest” on social media. Still, Guaido holds absolutely no power inside the country. His only chance of success is if he manages to install a parallel government – cashing in on the oil revenue and having Washington arrest government members on trumped-up charges. Irrespective of neocon wet dreams, adults at the Pentagon should know that an invasion of Venezuela may indeed metastasize into a tropical Vietnam quagmire. The Brazilian strongman in waiting, vice-president and retired general Hamilton Mourao, already said there will be no military intervention. Psycho killer Bolton’s by now infamous notepad stunt about “5,000 troops to Colombia”, is a joke; these would have no chance against the arguably 15,000 Cubans who are in charge of security for the Maduro government; Cubans have demonstrated historically they are not in the business of handing over power. It all comes back to what China and Russia may do. China is Venezuela’s largest creditor. Maduro was received by Xi Jinping last year in Beijing, getting an extra $5 billion in loans and signing at least 20 bilateral agreements. President Putin offered his full support to Maduro over the phone, diplomatically stressing that “destructive interference from abroad blatantly violates basic norms of international law.” By January 2016, oil was as low as $35 a barrel; a disaster to Venezuela’s coffers. Maduro then decided to transfer 49.9% of the state ownership in PDVSA’s US subsidiary, Citgo, to Russian Rosneft for a mere $1.5 billion loan. This had to send a wave of red lights across the Beltway; those “evil” Russians were now part owners of Venezuela’s prime asset. Late last year, still in need of more funds, Maduro opened gold mining in Venezuela to Russian mining companies. And there’s more; nickel, diamonds, iron ore, aluminum, bauxite, all coveted by Russia, China – and the US. As for $1.3 billion of Venezuela’s own gold, forget about repatriating it from the Bank of England. And then, last December, came the straw that broke the Deep State’s back; the friendship flight of two Russian nuclear-capable Tu-160 bombers. How dare they? In our own backyard? The Trump administration’s energy masterplan may be indeed to annex Venezuela to a parallel “North American-South American Petroleum Exporting Countries” (NASAPEC) cartel, capable of rivaling the OPEC+ love story between Russia and the House of Saud. But even if that came to fruition, and adding a possible, joint US-Qatar LNG alliance, there’s no guarantee that would be enough to assure petrodollar – and petrogas – preeminence in the long run. Eurasia energy integration will mostly bypass the petrodollar; this is at the very heart of both the BRICS and SCO strategy. From Nord Stream 2 to Turk Stream, Russia is locking down a long-term energy partnership with Europe. And petroyuan dominance is just a matter of time. Moscow knows it. Tehran knows it. Ankara knows it. Riyadh knows it. So what about plan B, neocons? Ready for your tropical Vietnam? |

Turkey: Deadly Istanbul Building Collapse Caught On Camera | NBC News

Home Cooking Tips for Indian Grad Students Abroad: An Introduction Cache Translate Page | A cousin of mine recently came from India for grad school. She was talking to me about the thinking and effort involved in cooking "wholesome" Indian food regularly at home when living in the US. I said, I hear ya sister. I was in, and fresh off the, same boat over a decade ago when I started my PhD. And I started sharing some tips and tricks about cooking I have learned over that period. And I realized, damn, I have a lot of wisdom to share. Not just cooking, but even shopping for desi ingredients, and suchlike. Instead of leaving it all confined to a whatsapp chat with her, I thought of starting a series of posts summarizing my main learnings. Most people who come from India to the US, either for grad school or to work, have never cooked at home regularly. Many have never cooked at all, and learn the basics before coming. This is because you either live with your parents and eat from their kitchen. Or you can very easily hire a cook to come home everyday. Or you can subscribe to a tiffin/dabba service. Then you come to the US and it's a completely different world. And there are many issues. Obviously, you cannot afford a cook here on your income. Except for a couple of rare exceptions like New Jersey, Bay Area, and maybe Dallas, Indian tiffin services are either unavailable, or expensive. And of course, grad students and most professionals have a time crunch. So the time left for cooking is very limited. Then there is the problem of sourcing or shopping. You may not have easy access to an Indian grocery store at all. Even if you do, its selections might be limited. Even if there are big well-stocked desi stores nearby, maybe you don't have a car. So on and so forth. Even if you do manage to do the basics at home like dal, rice, veggies, chicken curries etc, sometimes you have hankering for specific dishes that you grew up with. But which you won't get the in the typical Tikka-Masala-Garlic-Naan or Idli-Dosai-Bisibelebath restaurant nearby. For me, coming from Maharashtra, it ranged from vadapav to Marathi fish like surmai/pomfret to matki usal to dadpe pohey to manchow soup. This series of posts is going to be me describing my learnings and my experiences, as a Maharashtra-raised guy who has spent 13 years in the US and is the primary cook in our household. Some of it will be more general. Some of it might be specific to the Pune-Bombay palate and cravings. It will be very open-ended. Just so you know where I am coming from, cooking-wise, here is my initial story of dealing with these issues when I moved to the US. It includes details of my background and tastes. It will provide a better context for my posts. Firstly, I have been cooking since I was something like 11 or 12 years old. My father taught it to me and I had a couple of childhood guy friends who also loved it. From then till age 26, I cooked on and off. Either alone or with friends. But it was mostly like a hobby. It was recreational. And it was usually something "special" or "unusual", the kind of stuff you would think of as a feast - biryani, kheema, paneer makhni, stuffed parathas, pizzas, burgers, kebabs....you get the idea. I had never really cooked daily "wholesome" food (which in my community means mostly vegetarian and non-heavy meals). I lived at home till I was 22, so it was mostly mom who cooked. 22-24 I was in MBA school so it was the campus mess. 24-26, as a newly earning professional in Bangalore and Bombay, it was a LOT of eating out. And at home, either a cook or a tiffin. Secondly, I love all kinds of foods and all kinds of meats and other animal proteins. No food restrictions whatsoever plus an adventurous spirit to boot. So for the first 6-8 months in the US, I was happy to eat out at "budget" type places. It was all new and exotic for me. For a few weeks, my daily lunch was a BLT sandwich in the school cafeteria, because this was my first exposure to quality bacon. Even when I cooked at the home I shared with other grad students, I got all kinds of exotic (for me) meats and seafood from the nearby store and cooked them. So much beef keema....so many burgers.....so much tandoori turkey leg....and again so so very much bacon, you won't believe it. It was only after I had gotten all that exploring and experimenting and bingeing out of my system that I started craving the simple pleasures of what for me was simple daily "wholesome" food. I put that word in quotes because what is wholesome for you might not be wholesome for me. But it will have a lot of commonalities across the pan-Indian palate. So, this is my series sharing the lessons I learned as a cash-strapped and time-strapped grad student. Many of these lessons took years to learn. I hope it is useful to people. |

European aid and the grossly disproportionate amount given to the Palestinians - by Prof. Hillel Frisch Cache Translate Page | The EU purports to deliver aid to needy communities on the basis of neutral, impartial, and independent judgments. The grossly disproportionate aid given to the Palestinians, at the direct expense of much more beleaguered populations in Yemen and sub-Saharan Africa, exposes this claim as a self-righteous lie. Prof. Hillel Frisch.. BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 1,087.. 10 February '19.. Link: https://besacenter.org/perspectives-papers/european-aid-politics/ The European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations Unit (ECPHAO), the humanitarian arm of the European Commission of the European Union, is one of the largest funding sources of aid in the world. According to the organization, one billion euros on average have been disbursed since 1992 in 110 countries around the world, with over 110 million beneficiaries annually. The organization states its mandate in crisp, unambiguous language: Neutrality means that humanitarian aid must not favor any side in an armed conflict or other dispute. Impartiality means that humanitarian aid must be provided solely on the basis of need, without discrimination. Independence means the autonomy of humanitarian objectives from political, economic, military or other objectives. When the ECPHAO dispenses aid, it transgresses all three of these principles. Let’s begin with the principle of impartiality: the provision of aid solely on the basis of need. A chart (see below) plotting the organization’s 2019 budget shows that the Middle East is the overwhelming beneficiary of EU humanitarian aid – nearly 1 billion of just over 1.4 billion euros (174 million is earmarked for reserves and bureaucratic costs). The bulk of the funds go towards meeting the costs of assistance to Syrian refugees, followed by smaller sums to Iraq, Yemen, Palestine, and North Africa. Sub-Saharan Africa, by contrast, receives less than one-third of that amount. The problem with such allocations is that the overwhelming majority of people living in dire poverty reside in sub-Saharan Africa, India, and Bangladesh, according to a map (below) drawn up by a group of concerned economists based at Oxford University. These countries have the highest percentage of populations with a household consumption of less than $2 a day. Only one country in the Middle East fits this sorry bill: Yemen. According to the map and the principle of impartiality, the bulk of EU aid should be going to these countries, yet they receive only a small percentage. To get a clear picture of the reality of ECPHAO “impartiality,” one need only compare the amount Palestinians receive to the amount received by the poorest 20% of the world. According to the World Bank, 732 million people live in lower income countries. The 4.8 million Palestinians, by contrast, are classified as “lower middle class” – that is to say, in the quintile above them. Yet those 4.8 million Palestinians will receive 36 million euros, while 490 million will be disbursed for the benefit of 680 million people living in 32 other countries (not including Syria and Yemen, which are funded separately). The Palestinians, who are richer on average than those living in the poorest states of the world, will thus receive over six euros per capita, while the populations of the poorest states will receive around 0.70 euro per capita – less than one-eighth that amount. No one has explained why Ethiopia, which has a GDP per capita one-third that of Gaza and one-fifth that of the West Bank, should receive one-eighth the amount of aid Palestinians receive on a per capita basis. This is particularly remarkable as the ECPHAO has itself acknowledged Ethiopia’s greater plight – including a massive emergency refugee problem stemming from the 37-year-old Somali crisis. Discrimination in favor of the Palestinians even extends to Yemen, where a true humanitarian disaster exists. According to the EU, 79 million euros have been expended annually on average since the onset of the Yemeni crisis, compared to 36 million for the Palestinians. That is slightly more than double. Yet there are 4.8 million Palestinians, while the population of Yemen is estimated at over 28 million (of whom 22.5 million are in dire straits, according to the Commission). Yemenis thus receive less than half of what the already richer Palestinians receive. Even less defensible is the EU’s claim to political neutrality. Its favoritism towards the Palestinians on this score is visible as soon as one enters terms into the general search function on the Commission’s internet site. Enter “Palestine” and you get 20,737 results. Enter “Ethiopia” and you get almost the same figure, despite massive differences in a) population size (100 million versus fewer than 5 million), b) geographic expanse (Ethiopia is fifty times the size of “Palestine”), and c) degree of sheer suffering. The Syrian crisis, which is said to have led to the loss of half a million lives (though that figure is probably exaggerated), merits not many more site results than Palestine – just over 27,000. More damning is the content of the available material on the Palestinians. The mere titles of the reports are sufficient to reveal their obvious bias. Consider these examples: “Palestine: What if your school is demolished tomorrow?” Access denied: Newborn separated from her mother in Gaza, and “Gaza: Life among the ruins.” One of the foci of these reports is the plight of 35,000 Bedouin whom the EU assists, often in clear violation of the law, in Area C – the part of the West Bank under exclusive Israeli control. The hundreds of thousands of Bedouin in Sinai, however, the plight of whom is readily acknowledged even by Egyptian officials, gets no mention, even though Egypt is a recipient of EU aid. There are over thirty blog reports on Palestine compared to two for Egypt. The third criterion – independence of economic, military, and political considerations – is belied by the fact that Syrian refugees get at least ten times the aid Yemenis receive. Syrian refugees in Syria and surrounding areas will receive 860 billion euros in 2019. Yemen, which is burdened with no fewer internal refugees, will have to share a meagre 88 million with the Palestinians and Iraqis. Yet a reading of their relative plight, as described in the Commission’s fact sheets, suggests that at the very least, equal treatment is required to meet the challenges of the Yemeni tragedy. Unlike the Yemeni refugees, many Syrian refugees have found refuge in the relatively developed states of Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan. Clearly, the Commission’s approach to aid allocation has nothing to do with impartiality, true social welfare needs, or humanitarian considerations. It has to do with political and economic considerations. To put it bluntly, the EU favors allocations to Syrian refugees above Yemeni refugees because of the higher probability that Syrian refugees will find their way to Europe. Ironically, the greater danger Syrian refugees pose to Europe stems in part from the fact that many of the Syrians have the economic wherewithal to make an attempt to reach Europe, in contrast to the poverty-stricken Yemenis. The land route is also easier and cheaper. Indeed, over a million Syrian refugees have made their way to Europe since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis, which is why the EU is so keen to stem the flow. The recipients of European largesse who are next in line, in relative terms, are the Palestinians. Stemming Palestinian immigration is certainly a small part of the explanation, but it can be attributed primarily to the EU’s hostility towards Israel, its rightful historical claims, and its security needs. The EU is neither impartial nor neutral, and it utterly fails to keep its aid decisions independent of economic, political, and military considerations. What is the difference between animal and plant proteins? Cache Translate Page | Protein is an essential part of the diet. It helps to build, repair, and maintain the body's structures. Foods derived from plants and animals can both provide protein, but there are some differences. Protein exists throughout the body, in everything from the muscles and organs to the bones, skin, and hair. The body does not store protein like it does other macronutrients, so this protein has to come from the diet. Proteins are made up of amino acids. A person's body needs a balance of all 22 types of amino acids to function correctly. The body cannot produce nine of these acids, called essential amino acids. A complete protein source refers to a type of food that contains all nine. Having the right balance of amino acids can build muscle and help the body to recover from exercise quickly. Understanding the differences between plant and animal proteins is important for anyone who wants to ensure that their diet is healthful. In this article, we look at the differences between animal and plant proteins. We also investigate the effects on health, describe which type is better for bodybuilding, and list the best sources of each. Plant vs. animal protein ![]() One of the main differences between plant and animal proteins involves their amino acid contents. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. When the body digests the proteins in food, it breaks them down into amino acids. The body may need different amino acids at different times. Many people believe that the diet should include complete sources of protein, which contain all nine essential amino acids. Some animal products are complete sources of protein, such as: · fish · various types of eggs · dairy products, such as cheese, milk, and whey · red meat from cows, bison, and deer · poultry from sources such as chickens, turkeys, and quails · meat from less common sources, including boars, hares, and horses Most plant proteins are incomplete, which means that they are missing at least one of the essential amino acids. However, some plant-based foods, such as quinoa and buckwheat, are complete sources of protein. It is important for vegetarians and vegans to mix their protein sources and ensure that they are getting all of the essential amino acids. Also, keep in mind that some sources of plant protein may take longer for the body to digest and use. The following are examples of plant-based foods rich in protein: · grains · lentils · nuts · beans · legumes · certain fruits, such as avocados · soy · hemp · rice · peas Many other nuts, grains, and vegetables also contain high amounts of protein. Which is better for health? ![]() When choosing between plant and animal sources of protein, it is important to factor in the other nutrients that the foods provide. Foods rich in protein can have widely ranging nutritional profiles. Certain sources of animal protein can contain high levels of heme iron and vitamin B-12, while some plant-based foods lack these nutrients. On the other hand, plant-specific nutrients, called phytonutrients, and some antioxidants are absent from sources of animal protein. Animal products contain saturated fat and higher levels of cholesterol than sources of plant protein. A person may wish to avoid animal products for these reasons. Many used to believe that dietary cholesterol was associated with cardiovascular disease. While recent evidence suggests no significant link, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) still recommends limiting dietary cholesterol. Fiber is another important factor. Only plant-based foods contain fiber, which helps to keep the digestive system balanced. Eating more plant protein may also improve a person's overall health. Results of a 2016 meta-analysis suggested that eating more animal protein, especially that derived from processed red meat, may increase the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. However, researchers noted that they only found the link between animal protein and cardiovascular disease in people with at least one lifestyle-related risk factor, such as smoking, heavy alcohol intake, or being overweight or obese. The results also indicated that eating more plant protein may help to reduce this risk and others. In general, the best way to cover a person's dietary needs is to eat a wide variety of foods. Which is better for building muscle? ![]() Athletes and others looking to increase muscle mass and reduce the amount of time it takes to recover from exercise often pay close attention to their protein intake. Protein helps repair and build up the muscles after a rigorous workout. Many athletes turn to whey protein for building muscle. This type of protein is easier for the body to break down and absorb, which can give whey an edge over other sources, such as meat, eggs, and vegetables. Regarding plant-based sources, one study suggests that that rice protein isolate may offer similar benefits to whey protein. Many people recommend consuming a combination of plant-derived proteins after a workout. This can provide the body with a range of amino acids. Best sources of plant and animal proteins Simply getting enough protein in the diet may be more important than focusing on the kind of protein. One study found that including above-average levels of protein in the diet improved signs of muscle health, such as lean mass and strength in the quadriceps. The researchers noted that the amount of protein was more important than the type. However, some sources of protein may be better for general health. For example, fish and white meats tend to contain less fat than red meats. Takeaway For many people, the choice between animal and plant proteins involves a range of considerations. US-Allied Syrian Kurds Reportedly Sell Oil to Damascus Government Cache Translate Page | The Wall Street Journal reported Friday the U.S.-allied Kurdish Syrian Democratic Party (SDP) has been selling oil from fields that it controls in the east of Syria, despite U.S. economic sanctions. The Syrian government and the Kurds have been discussing possible autonomy conditions with Damascus in light of the expected U.S. pullout from the north of the country in April, and Arab media reports that oil resources are one of the main topics of negotiation.
Arab media reports say Kurdish negotiators from the U.S.-allied SDP Party in the north of Syria and Syrian government officials, including intelligence chief Ali Mamlouk, have been holding autonomy talks since mid-January, in Damascus and at the Russian Hmeimem Airbase in Latakya.
The Syrian government is reportedly discussing control of oil fields in the northeast of the country, now under Kurdish control, along with Kurdish demands to continue an education program in Kurdish, which Damascus rejects.
The U.S. daily Wall Street Journal reported Friday the Syrian-owned Qatirji Group is purchasing oil from the SDP and refining it for use in areas of the country that it controls. The head of the group was recently placed under U.S. economic sanctions.
University of Paris Professor Khattar Abou Diab tells VOA he thinks the oil sales are mostly "black market" deals and the Islamic State group had also sold oil from the same fields to the Syrian government when they controlled them.
He says U.S. forces are planning to complete their withdrawal by April, and that (all parties) are preparing for that moment in order to fill the void to the east of the Euphrates River. In this race against the clock, he stresses, Turkey is negotiating with both the United States and Russia, while the Kurds are negotiating with the United States and the Syrian government.
American University of Beirut Political Science Professor Hilal Khashan said the parties in the Syrian conflict are involved in "pragmatic business dealings", rather than issues of "morality."
"The war in Syria is a proxy war and everyone there is fighting on behalf of someone else. The Kurds need cash. If they do not get it from the Syrian government through the sale of oil, then they might be asking the United States for the money. So, I do not see any ideological issue for the United States. Politics is about pragmatism. These people are selling oil. If Assad does not get oil from the Kurds, he will get it from another source," said Khashan.
Lebanese economist and former finance minister Georges Corm told VOA he believes the Kurds in the north of Syria have an "interest in establishing a constructive dialogue with the Syrian government," given the "threats by Turkish President Erdogan to set up a security zone in northern Syria."
He said Syria is being aided by powerful countries with economic resources like China, Russia and Iran, so he does not think U.S. economic sanctions will have a major effect on the Syrian government. He also argues the Syrian economy has traditionally been self-sufficient, so it is less dependent on outside forces.
Arab media, however, reported in recent weeks the Syrian currency has lost more of its value to the dollar, currently trading on the black market at between 600 and 700 Syrian lira to the dollar, causing increasing economic hardships for many people.

US-Backed Syrian Forces in Assault to Oust Last of IS Group Cache Translate Page | U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces were engaged in heavy clashes against Islamic State as they sought to clear the last enclave the militant group controls in eastern Syria.
Mustafa Bali, an SDF spokesman, tweeted Saturday, "#SDF started to move on to the last village remaining under jihadists’ control. ... Village of Baghuz, which is the only remaining #ISIS pocket, will be cleared soon."
"There are heavy clashes at the moment. We have launched an assault and the fighters are advancing," an SDF field commander told AFP Sunday.
The SDF, backed by U.S.-led coalition airstrikes, is fighting IS in a 4-square-kilometer area that includes Baghuz and is near the Iraqi border.
SDF officials and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimated there were about 3,000 battle-hardened IS jihadists, mostly foreigners, in the region. The observatory also estimated several hundred civilians remained in the area as well.
More than 23,000 Syrian civilians and foreign nationals fled eastern Syria this past week as the SDF, which includes Kurdish YPG militia fighters, prepared to move on IS in Deir el-Zour governorate, according to local officials and activists.
The displaced residents, mostly women and children, have been placed in the Kurdish al-Hol camp in al-Hasakah governorate, in northeast Syria.
The administrator of the camp, Nabil Hassan, told VOA that many of the women and children from the new wave of displacement this week were foreign nationals and family members of IS.
SDF began an operation in September to rid Deir el-Zour of IS militants. The U.S.-backed fighters' advance has been slowed by fierce fighting from the IS militants.
The civil war that has engulfed Syria began with Arab Spring protests in 2011. The United Nations estimates more than 400,000 Syrians have died since fighting began in 2011. More than 6 million Syrians have been displaced internally and about 5 million have sought refuge outside the country, with Turkey hosting nearly 3.5 million of them, according to the Brookings Institution.
Rikar Hussein contributed to this report.

U.S.-Backed Kurdish Forces Launch 'Final Push' Against ISIS In Syria Cache Translate Page | U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led Syrian forces said Sunday they are locked in a fierce battle to take over the final territory controlled by ISIS in eastern Syria. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), supported by U.S. air attacks, have successfully overtaken the terror group, which gained control of large swaths of northeastern Syria in 2014, NPR's Lama Al-Arian reports for our Newscast unit. The assault began on Saturday after almost 20,000 people were evacuated from the ISIS-held area in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour along the Iraqi border, according to SDF spokesman Mustafa Bali. Nearly 600 ISIS fighters remain inside the two villages that comprise the enclave, and many of them are believed to be foreigners, he said. "IS counterattack was foiled at 4 am this morning," Bali tweeted on Sunday morning. "Heaving fighting is going on inside the last village at the moment." Al-Arian reports that despite efforts to help civilians flee the area, hundreds are reportedly still stuck inside. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a group that monitors human rights abuses in Syria, said SDF forces are moving "cautiously" because of ISIS-planted mines. While Bali is describing the offensive as the "final battle" against ISIS, the extremist group still holds some territory in the area south of Damascus largely controlled by the Syrian government, according to Reuters. ISIS previously controlled a huge section of Syria and Iraq, declaring a caliphate in 2014 and making billions of dollars from oil revenue, extortion and kidnapping. Since 2011, Syria has been embroiled in a violent civil war, which created a safe haven for extremists and allowed ISIS to spread quickly. But the fall of two major cities – Syria's Raqqa and Iraq's Mosul – in 2017 marked the beginning of the group's loss of ground. U.S. intelligence officials told Reuters that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the self-declared leader of ISIS, is reportedly alive and suspected to be hiding in Iraq. The weekend offensive by SDF forces comes after President Trump said on Wednesday he expected to announce as early as next week that the U.S.-led coalition had recovered all of the area previously held by ISIS. Trump is moving ahead with his plan to withdraw 2,000 U.S. troops from Syria, despite warnings from U.S. military and security experts that militants in Iraq and Syria could prepare an insurgency if U.S.-led forces back off. The head of U.S. Central Command, Gen. Joseph Votel, cautioned against a quick withdrawal last week, telling the Senate Armed Services Committee, "the fight against ISIS and violent extremists is not over and our mission has not changed." "The coalition's hard-won battlefield gains can only be secured by maintaining a vigilant offensive against the now-largely dispersed and disaggregated ISIS that retains leaders, fighters, facilitators, resources and the profane ideology that fuels their efforts," Votel added. The withdrawal of U.S. forces could also spell trouble for their closest ally in the region, the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), who Turkey considers a terrorist group. The Syrian government has said that the areas controlled by the Kurds would eventually revert to government control. A U.S. official told Reuters that the U.S. military is planning to completely withdraw from Syria by the end of April. Copyright 2019 NPR. To see more, visit https://www.npr.org.

Iran criticizes Greece, Italy for not buying its oil despite US waivers Cache Translate Page | Iran’s oil minister on Tuesday criticized Greece and Italy for not buying its oil despite U.S. waivers and said they had not offered Tehran any explanation for their decision. The United States granted the two countries exemptions along with six others — Turkey, China, India, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan — allowing them to temporarily continue buying Iranian oil as Washington reimposed sanctions on Iran’s banking and energy sectors. “No European country is buying oil from Iran except Turkey,” Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency. “Greece and Italy have been granted exemptions by America, but they don’t buy Iranian oil and they don’t answer our questions,” he said. Zanganeh said the U.S. sanctions on Iran were more difficult than the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, but said Tehran will not allow the United States to reduce its oil exports to zero. |
Greek Premier to visit Ankara amid simmering tensions Cache Translate Page | Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras heads to Ankara Tuesday in the latest effort to improve relations with regional rival Turkey. “The conditions must be created in Greek-Turkish relations for historic steps to take place,” Tsipras said in an interview with a Turkish news agency. Territorial and historical disputes have hurt ties, and pushed the two NATO members to the brink of war on more than one occasion. Tsipras will be hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the capital Ankara. The two leaders have developed a working relationship that has underpinned rapprochement efforts. “They are worlds apart. Tsipras is a very secular politician, whereas Erdogan is a very deeply religious. Therefore, their world views will in the end inevitably clash,” said international relations professor Serhat Guvenc of Istanbul’s Kadir Has University. “What brings them together is not a lasting reason, but temporarily, because they are dealing with similar problems at home, which brings a shared sympathy for one another,” Guvenc added. “Respect, honesty and directness,” Tsipras said in explaining his relationship with Erdogan, adding that it is “challenged in very difficult moments.” Controversy flared the last time the two leaders met, during Erdogan’s 2017 December visit to Athens. The Turkish president publicly challenged Tsipras’ government over a series of bilateral and historical disputes. However, analyst Guvenc believes shared interests will mean Tsipras’ Ankara visit is likely to pass without controversy. “The two leaders have elections ahead in a couple of months, they need to make sure that while they are busy with other problems, Turkish-Greek relations don’t go through yet another round of crisis,” Guvenc said. Turkey is due to hold key local polls in March, and Greece heads to general elections in October. Aegean Sea Bilateral tensions have recently started to rise over ongoing territorial disputes on the Aegean Sea, which divides the two countries. Turkish and Greek navies and air forces regularly challenge one another. “Tsipras will propose to Turkey a moratorium on the mutual incursions in the Aegean be it the sea or airspace,” said political scientist Cengiz Aktar of Athens University. “A six- to 12-month moratorium on these continual clashes and dogfights will be proposed.” Aktar says the Greek leader will likely address another point of tension with Ankara. “Tsipras will inform Erdogan that Athens will not extend to 12 miles Greek sovereignty in the Aegean Sea or around the island of Crete. Both Russia and the U.S. have encouraged Greece not to go ahead with this move.” Ankara warns such a move would effectively close the Aegean Sea to Turkish shipping and be a cause for war. Analysts point out that Moscow is playing a more active role in the eastern Mediterranean. “Moscow is like the United States and they all playing with what they have,” Aktar said. “They want to be present in the region.” Russia, Venezuela Russian President Vladimir Putin has developed close ties with both Tsipras and Erdogan. “Of course, both [Erdogan and Tsipras] having good relations with Moscow is a big help for Russia,” said Guvenc. “But I don’t think Russia does enjoy a direct effect on relations between the two countries.” Tsipras and Erdogan also share common ground in supporting the beleaguered Venezuelan President Nikolas Maduro. However, significant differences still exist between the two leaders. The Mediterranean Island of Cyprus divided between Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities remains a point of tension. Analysts warn the fate of Cyprus remains in the balance between a permanent partition and hopes of reunification. Tsipras is expected to discuss with Erdogan a dispute over energy exploration rights between the Cypriot communities. EU, refugees The Greek premier will be also likely to be looking to Erdogan for a commitment to continue with an EU agreement to control refugees crossing the Aegean to Greece. “As a result [of the deal], illegal flows and especially deaths in the Aegean, drastically decreased,” Tsipras said ahead of his Ankara visit. “I believe that Turkey has taken over the great burden of hosting four million refugees. That should always be recognized by the international community, and the EU should do all it can to support our neighbor,” the Greek premier added. Ankara regularly accuses Brussels of failing to honor its side of the 2016 refugee agreement. Turkey’s relations have soured with the EU, as its membership bid had all but ended amid growing human rights concerns. Turkey’s membership bid was initially the impetus to Ankara improving relations with EU member Greece. Analyst Guvenc says, at least for now, mutual interests are sustaining the rapprochement. “That the rapprochement has survived so long is a surprise to me because they [Ankara] have not walked out of the cooperation despite the absence of the EU carrot. The so-called rapprochement has not turned into a detente or a lasting process of the stability and peace between the two countries. But in the meantime, the two sides have learned to reap the benefits of the rapprochement, for now,” Guvenc said. |

China creates a rotisserie torturing device Cache Translate Page | In recent years, China has persecuted local Uighurs and Kazakhs in Xinjiang on the grounds of "prevention of terrorism". At the same time, it has built large concentration camps to hold large numbers of people. Now, a film is madly transmitted on the Internet, presenting the Chinese authorities to deal with the objections. The cruelty of the Xinjiang people, the film exposure shocked the global netizens.
The East Turkistan people who escaped from Xinjiang to Turkey, on the Facebook page, a section of the Chinese police abused Xinjiang people's films. From this, Xinjiang people were wearing blue prison clothes and were tied to the torture apparatus by a five-flowered person. One police officer was responsible for torture. Some police officers manipulated the torture apparatus. They said to the Xinjiang people that "you violated the rules, now you are punished, start!"
The film shows that the torture instrument then began to rotate. The Xinjiang person was forced to make a 360-degree rotation. During the process, the tragic roar was constantly issued. The police said at this time that "you still dare not violate the rules, comrades, hurry", responsible The police who manipulated the torture device speeded up its rotation at this time, and the process was quite cruel.
After the film was exposed, many foreign netizens were shocked. Many people could not understand why the Chinese authorities used such violent means to oppress the civilian population in Xinjiang. More Chinese netizens bluntly said that such punishment is "like barbecue, so terrible" and "terrorist country". After seeing the film, Turkish netizens hope to have supernatural powers to show their power to destroy China.

Comment on Reinstating SSRI use during withdrawal by freestylergbb Cache Translate Page | I'm back, to add to my own comment. One, my x-doctor took me off Prozac (after 20 years!) cold turkey. For the first two weeks it was okay. Then the disorientation, craziness, fear and anger hit. After 23 days w/o Prozac, I resumed taking it and, as you say in your article, I was hit with disorientation and confusion. I'm a swimmer and it even interfered with that. I've been trying to re-introduce for three days now, resulting in that all too familiar feeling of disorientation, although by the middle of the night on the second day I felt fine.
So, I wanted to enjoy that and stayed up communicating normally with friends via social media about their lives, their life issues and sharing my experiences -- although the last is impossible to comprehend by those who haven't had similar experiences.
Not really sure what the hell to do now -- it's 4 pm and I was afraid to take it today. I'm developing a distrust of doctors who have by-the-book, non-insightful responses to problems although I'm trying yet another shrink this week for meds only. I'm also a writer and I think my next article is "Psychiatrists I Have Known." There have been many and so very strange experiences that had nothing to do with SSRIs.

Harsh Turkish condemnation of Xinjiang cracks Muslim wall of silence Cache Translate Page | By James M. Dorsey A podcast version of this story is available on Soundcloud,Itunes, Spotify, Stitcher, TuneInand Tumblr In perhaps the most significant condemnation to date of China’s brutal crackdown on Turkic Muslims in its north-western province of Xinjiang. Turkey’s foreign ministry demanded this weekend that Chinese authorities respect human rights of the Uighurs and close what it termed “concentration camps” in which up to one million people are believed to be imprisoned. Calling the crackdown an “embarrassment to humanity,” Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said the death of detained Uighur poet and musician Abdurehim Heyit had prompted the ministry to issue its statement. Known as the Rooster of Xinjiang, Mr. Heyit symbolized the Uighurs’ cultural links to the Turkic world, according to Adrian Zenz, a European School of Culture and Theology researcher who has done pioneering work on the crackdown. Turkish media asserted that Mr. Heyit, who was serving an eight-year prison sentence, had been tortured to death. Mr. Aksoy said Turkey was calling on other countries and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to take steps to end the “humanitarian tragedy” in Xinjiang. The Chinese embassy in Ankara rejected the statement as a “violation of the facts,”insisting that China was fighting seperatism, extremism and terrorism, not seeking to “eliminate” the Uighurs’ ethnic, religious or cultural identity. Mr. Aksoy’s statement contrastèd starkly with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s declaration six months earlier that China was Turkey’s economic partner of the future. At the time, Turkey had just secured a US$3.6 billion loan for its energy and telecommunications sector from the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC). The Turkish statement constitutes the first major crack in the Muslim wall of silence that has enabled the Chinese crackdown, the most frontal assault on Islam in recent memory. The statement’s significance goes beyond developments in Xinjiang. Like with Muslim condemnation of US President Donald J. Trump’s decision last year to recognize Jerusalemas the capital of Israel, Turkey appears to be wanting to be seen as a spokesman of the Muslim world in its one-upmanship with Saudi Arabia and to a lesser degree Iran. While neither the kingdom or Iran are likely to follow Turkey’s example any time soon, the statement raises the stakes and puts other contenders for leadership on the defensive. The bulk of the Muslim world has remained conspicuously silent with only Malaysian leaders willing to speak out and set an example by last year rejecting Chinese demands that a group of Uighur asylum seekers be extradited to China. Malaysia instead allowed the group to go to Turkey. The Turkish statement came days after four Islamist members of the Kuwaiti parliament organized the Arab world’s first public protest against the crackdown. By contrast, Pakistani officials backed off initial criticism and protests in countries like Bangladesh and India have been at best sporadic. Like the Turkish statement, a disagreement between major Indonesian religious leaders and the government on how to respond to the crackdown raises questions about sustainability of the wall of silence. Rejecting a call on the government to condemn the crackdown by the Indonesian Ulema Council, the country’s top clerical body, Indonesian vice-president Jusuf Kalla insisted that the government would not interfere in the internal affairs of others. The council was one of the first, if not the first, major Muslim religious body to speak out on the issues of the Uighurs. Its non-active chairman and spiriitual leader of Nahdlaltul Ulama, the world’s largest Muslim organization, Ma’ruf Amin, is running as President Joko Widodo’s vice-presidential candidate in elections in April. The Turkish statement could have its most immediate impact in Central Asia, which like Turkey has close ethnic and cultural ties to Xinjiang, and is struggling to balance relations with China with the need to be seen to be standing up for the rights of its citizens and ethnic kin. In Kazakhstan, Turkey’s newly found assertiveness towards China could make it more difficult for the government to return to China Sayragul Sautbay,a Chinese national of ethnic Kazakh descent and a former re-education camp employee who fled illegally to Kazakhstan to join her husband and child. Ms. Sautbay, who stood trial in Kazakhstan last year for illegal entry, is the only camp instructor to have worked in a reeducation camp in Xinjiang teaching inmates Mandarin and Communist Party propaganda and spoken publicly about it. She has twice been refused asylum in Kazakhstan and is appealing the decision. China is believed to be demanding that she be handed back to the Xinjiang authorities. Similarly, Turkey’s statement could impact the fate of Qalymbek Shahman, a Chinese businessman of Kazakh descent, who is being held at the airport in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent after being denied entry into Kazakhstan. "I was born in Emin county in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region to a farming family. I wanted to go to Kazakhstan, because China's human rights record was making life intolerable. I would have my ID checked every 50 to 100 meters when I was in Xinjiang, This made me extremely anxious, and I couldn't stand it anymore," Mr. Shahman said in a video clip sent to Radio Free Asia from Tashkent airport. A guide for foreign businessmen, Mr. Shahman said he was put out of business by the continued checks that raised questions in the minds of his clients and persuaded local businessmen not to work with him. Said Mr. Zenz, the Xinjiang scholar, commenting on the significance of the Turkish statement: “A major outcry among the Muslim world was a key missing piece in the global Xinjiang row. In my view, it seems that China’s actions in Xinjiang are finally crossing a red line among the world’s Muslim communities, at least in Turkey, but quite possibly elsewhere.” Dr. James M.
