The scene: the Winco 122nd And Halsey store. Me and The Wife™ leave the Mighty Multnomah County Library midland branch after enjoying a recharging day amongst the books complete with Dutch Bros Coffee because that's the way you Library Day, and we decide we want to get a few absolute necessities before Snowzilla comes to town.

The commute is pretty much normal for 1800 on a Friday night. I had heard, via staccato signals of constant information, that the stores in the Seattle area were getting astoundingly mobbed. Saw the pictures. Astounding. And, I figured the impending trip to the grocery was going to be a bit of an endurance trip but not ...

Well, I get ahead of myself. But I figured it would be a task needing fortitude but not like the penultimate scenes to When Worlds Collide or Deep Impact, or maybe half that bad. At most.

But how do you prepare yourself for something you've never seen and couldn't therefore envision? That you can't intellectually encompass because you have nothing to compare it to?

The store was thronged, to be sure, but it was channelled chaos; bumpy but negotiable. Wife finds us a handy parking spot; with her awareness of human nature, while every last parking spot in the lot in front of the store was taken, the spots on the side near the Shari's were NOT all full. People think of the area in front and everyone (including me) gets that tunnel-vision; they don't think about the small lot on the side.

Getting a cart was another challenge. There was not a free cart to be had. We had our library and Powell's City of Books bags and we went to work.

The first real clue that we were not operating under normal rules came in produce, when we found that there was not one bunch of bananas left in the place. At Whole Foods, they came for the kale, first. Here in more proletarian Outer East Portlandia, first they came for the 'nanas.

Walking off to bulk foods, we sang bars from "Yes, We Have No Bananas". because that's the way we roll.

The rest of the trip was uneventful if not for the immense crowd. The 122nd WinCo is laid out like most WinCos; the dairy is at the back.

As was the end of the line to the checkout. Down the dairy case on one side of that aisle; another proceeding the other way in front of the frozen foods case on the opposite side of that aisle. For a short time I worried it was all *one* line and I was going to be coming back that other way, but the WinCo logistics were immaculate; That line went to one end of the register line, our line to the other.

WinCo planning for this was straight-up rockstar, in other words.

Numerous incidences of simple human friendliness. This is when Oregon Nice comes out, in the transition between normal operations and crisis; oh, sure, if the apocalypse extends any more than a few days we'll be eating each other alive, but for the first few days, at least, we'll be cool with each other.

My wife comes back with a cart after I, having secured a place in the line with a few groceries already, had moved out of the dairy aisle alongside the bottled water area, which was by now as dry as the Atacama. The only cat litter available was in a 40-pound bucket, at which point an estimable gentleman donated his cart to her after concluding that he could carry what he had out to his car in his arms.

And I'll never have the opportunity to thank him, alas. Well, we paid that forward in our turn anyway. So that goes.

We waited in the line for check out, chatted philosophical (I can't speak for my spouse but I'm definitely in that phase of life) and exchanged conviviality with the others in the line ... and we checked out of Checkstand 1.

That's how you know this was a capital-E EVENT. Because, my friends, Checkstand 1 at your average WinCo is the one farthest away from the entrance. It's in the booneys, as the WinCo layout has it.

In that way, it's a shame that me and my spouse never had kids. We'd have grandkids who were infants by now, and in a few years, we'd be able to tell them the tale.

About how the weather was so bad, back in Feb of '19, that we checked out of WinCo at Checkstand 1.

And so it goes.

Of you commenters suck. Maybe one in a blue moon has something worth reading but for the most part, it’s all garbage.
I remember when there was wit, humor, and some intelligence to be had, now it’s all criticism.
Never does anyone side with the rant or rave, ALWAYS opposing from whatever angle available. And the put downs, when needed, aren’t even good!
This column sucks and I blame the mass exodus of true, original, commenters.

Btw- I’m not gonna even read the comments so fuckoff in advance, bitches.

@3 No, I don't long for the days of yore with regard to internet comments. I long for the days of yore when there was no internet and assholes were easily avoided and ignored. Also I've mentioned this before. IA is for the passive aggressive. That is the entire reason it exists. I am not now, nor have I ever been, passive aggressive. Anything i have to say online I would say to one's face and I don't say anything anonymously. Anonymity is for trolls, losers, liars, and cowards.

Re: Should You Sell Your Car?      Cache   Translate Page

Since I live close to my usual places, including work, I can walk or bus. But we've kept our car, even though it remains in the carport most of the time. Why? Because when you live in an 800 sq. ft. space with three other people (After the kids grew up and left, the family elders came rolling in. My spouse and I will never have an empty nest), you have to escape to a solitary space once in awhile if you don't want to be a candidate for the insane asylum. The car doesn't even have to go anywhere; just being alone can be enough. But it also makes a great practice room - no one complains about my shrieky pennywhistle or thumping bodhran anymore.

On the 50th anniversary of the first successful prosthetic mitral valve replacement, how far has cardiac surgery come, and where are we headed? Tune in to hear Dr. Albert Starr, co-founder of the first artificial mitral valve, medical director of the Providence Heart and Vascular Institute, and director of Academic Affairs & Bioscience Development for Providence Health & Services in Portland, Oregon, recounts his first foray into the field of valvular disease and the extraordinary process of inventing the first artificial mitral valve. What complications did Dr. Starr encounter during the design process, and what breakthrough allowed for success in long-term artificial valve replacement? He also discusses the development of what was perhaps one of the first ventures into outcomes research, with the creation of a system for long-term follow up of patients receiving valve replacement. What does Dr. Starr see as the "next big thing" in cardiac surgery? Dr. Janet Wright hosts. Produced in Cooperation with

Bullet Points: Hunkered Down Edition      Cache   Translate Page
It’s been more than a couple of months since I’ve taken on the task of  compiling crime-fiction news bits that don’t necessarily merit posts of their own ... which means I have a lot of information to impart. Fortunately, Seattle is heavily socked in with snow today, so I have little interest in spending much time outside in the cold. Better to snug in with a cup of coffee and my computer keyboard. Let us begin ...

• Lisbeth Salander fans, take note: BookRiot reports that “An unseen investigation by Stieg Larsson, the late journalist and author of the Millennium Trilogy, has come to light and will be revealed in a new true-crime book. Larsson was a leading expert on antidemocratic, right-wing, extremist organizations.” The site goes on to synopsize the plot of the new book, which is due out from AmazonCrossing in October:
On February 28, 1986, Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme was shot dead in Stockholm. The crime is still unsolved today. It’s now known that Larsson began his own investigation into the assassination—continuing the search until his own death. In 2014, journalist and documentary filmmaker, Jan Stocklassa gained access to the 20 boxes of Larsson’s research into the case.
To quote from an associated press release:
In The Man Who Played with Fire: Stieg Larsson’s Lost Files and the Hunt for an Assassin, Stocklassa reveals new facts about the case and reveals the hitherto unknown research of the best-selling author in a fascinating true crime story. For the first time in many years, the police in Sweden have taken active measures to investigate a new suspect in the murder case and are pursuing leads based on the research revealed in Stocklassa’s book.
• What matters most is making money, right? The New Yorker reported recently that Dan Mallory, the book editor turned author who—as “A.J. Finn”—penned last year’s best-selling The Woman in the Window, has made a variety of false assertions regarding his health, his education, and his career achievements. Mallory has since sought to excuse his actions, but his deceptions have left many folks in the publishing industry wary of the author. In The Washington Post, critic Ron Charles wrote: “If James Frey taught us anything with his infamous memoir, it’s that autobiographical claims can collapse into a million little pieces of exaggeration and deception. Mallory’s situation is different, though, if more bizarre. How do we reconsider a work of fiction—or any work of art—when confronted with troubling information about its creator?” Despite all of this controversy, Mallory’s publisher, HarperCollins, says it is holding firm on plans to bring out his sophomore novel in January 2020—a San Francisco-set yarn The New Yorker describes as “a story of revenge … involving a female thriller writer and an interviewer who learns of a dark past.”

Julie Adams, an Iowa-born actress who co-starred opposite an amphibious “Gill man” in the 1954 movie The Creature from the Black Lagoon before going on to a long and prolific TV career, passed away in Los Angeles on February 3 at age 92. Among her many television roles were appearances on Hawaiian Eye, Perry Mason, Darren McGavin’s The Outsider, Ironside, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Ellery Queen, Mannix, Cagney & Lacey, Murder, She Wrote, and Diagnosis: Murder. An interesting tidbit: Adams’ fleeting first marriage was to Leonard B. Stern, a screenwriter and producer responsible for such memorable series as Get Smart, McMillan & Wife, and The Snoop Sisters.

Via Shotsmag Confidential comes news that Karin Slaughter’s 2018 novel, Pieces of Her, will be turned into an eight-episode Netflix series starring Lesli Linka Glatter. “The story,” explains the blog (quoting from a press release), “follows as an adrift young woman’s conception of her mother is forever changed after a Saturday afternoon trip to the mall together suddenly explodes into violence. As figures from her mother’s past start to resurface, she is forced to go on the run and on that journey, begins to piece together the truth of her mother’s previous identity and uncovers secrets of her childhood.”

• With Series 6 of Endeavour scheduled to debut in Great Britain tomorrow, February 10, ITV Magazine—a consumer periodical just launched last month by the show’s principal broadcasting network—has published a rather satisfying article about what viewers can expect from Endeavour’s latest four episodes. Chris Sullivan has posted scans of that piece in his blog, Morse, Lewis and Endeavour. Meanwhile, he has embedded a new morning TV show interview with a bushy-bearded Roger Allam, who plays Detective Chief Inspector Fred Thursday on the program opposite Shaun Evans, starring as Detective Sergeant Endeavour Morse.

From B.V. Lawson’s In Reference to Murder:
USA Network has picked up to series its drama pilot Dare Me, based on Megan Abbott’s 2012 novel of the same name. Set in the world of competitive high school cheerleading, it follows the fraught relationship between two best friends (Herizen Guardiola and Mario Kelly) after a new coach (Willa Fitzgerald) arrives to bring their team to prominence. While the girls’ friendship is put to the test, their young lives are changed forever when a shocking crime rocks their quiet suburban world.
• Lawson also reportsthat “ABC has ordered the drama pilot Stumptown, inspired by the graphic novels published by Oni Press. It follows Dex Parios, a strong, assertive, and unapologetically sharp-witted Army veteran working as a P.I. in Portland, Oregon. With a complicated personal history and only herself to rely on, she solves other people’s messes with a blind eye toward her own.”

• As an unflagging fan of Lou Grant, the 1977-1982 CBS-TV series starring Ed Asner as the sometimes crusty city editor of a fictional Southern California daily newspaper called the Los Angeles Tribune, I was pleased to discover at least the vast majority of that show’s episodes are available for free on YouTube. The picture quality is sometimes less than ideal, but until I drop the dough for Shout! Factory’s DVD releases of all five seasons, it’s probably the best I can expect. If you want to learn more about this drama series—which was a spin-off from The Mary Tyler Moore Show—check out The Canonical Lou Grant Episode Guide. And I’ve added the main title sequences from the first three seasons of Lou Grant to The Rap Sheet’s YouTube page.

• Speaking of vintage shows, The Spy Command alerts me to the fact that La-La Land Records will soon release “Jerry Goldsmith[‘s] music to a mostly forgotten 1975 TV show, Archer.” Wikipedia explains that this is “a limited-edition soundtrack containing the one episode … Goldsmith scored (paired with a re-issue of the score to the film Warning Shot, from newly discovered better elements).” If you, too, have difficulties remembering Archer, let me point out that it was a short-lived NBC mid-season replacement series starred Brian Keith (Family Affair) as L.A. private investigator Lew Archer, the character so masterfully developed over three decades by Ross Macdonald. Keith’ show wasn’t awful, without ever being really good; I much preferred Peter Graves’ portrayal of the same protagonist in an unsuccessful 1974 TV pilot based on one of Macdonald’s later yarns, The Underground Man. And though, as one TV critic observed, Keith was mustered up “weary cynicism” enough to play Archer, he did not seem to respect the source material. In fact, Keith even had visions of moving the series’ setting from the City of Angels to Honolulu! Regardless, I’d like to get my hands on the six episodes of Archer that were originally broadcast, if only for nostalgic reasons. I might even be willing to purchase La-La Land’s presumably high-quality cut of Goldsmith’s Archer theme, if only because the version I have—and which is featured in The Spy Command’s post—is terrible.

(Above) J. Kingston Pierce and Chelsea Cain enjoy a bit of fun at Bouchercon 2011, high above St. Louis’ Gateway Arch.

• I have many fond memories of attending Bouchercon 2011, which took place in St. Louis, Missouri. But one of the few captured on film was my meeting with Portland, Oregon, author Chelsea Cain, who turned out to be personable, downright funny, and nowhere near as dark-spirited a woman as her fiction might suggest. So I was pleased to read that her 2014 novel, One Kick, has been adapted as a 12-part TV series titled Gone, scheduled for broadcast on WGN America, beginning on 9 p.m. ET/PT on Wednesday, February 27. Deadline Hollywood sums up the plot this way: “Gone follows the story of Kit ‘Kick’ Lannigan ([played by] Leven Rambin), survivor of a highly publicized child-abduction case, and 20-year veteran Frank Novak ([Chris]Noth), the FBI agent who rescued her. Years later, he recruits her to join a special task force dedicated to solving abductions and missing-persons cases. Paired with former Army intelligence officer John Bishop (Danny Pino), Lannigan uses her intuitive wit and martial arts skills to solve cases and bring victims home.”

• Yet another Agatha Christie yarn appears due for big-screen treatment, with a possible 2020 release date. The Killing Times reports that UK screenwriter Sarah Phelps (The A.B.C. Murders, Murder by Innocence, And Then There Were None) “has signed up to adapt Christie’s [1961] stand-alone novel, The Pale Horse.”

• Also to be filmed: Stephen King’s Mile 81.

• Ann Cleeves closed out her nine-volume Shetland Islands/Jimmy Perez series with last year’s Wild Fire. Fear not, though, for EuroCrime says she’s “turning her hand to a new series set in Devon.” The first of those new books, introducing Detective Matthew Venn, will be The Long Call, due out from Minotaur in September.

• Two other far-off releases to watch for: Kate Atkinson’s Big Sky (Little, Brown), her fifth novel starring Cambridge private eye Jackson Brodie, is scheduled for publication on both sides of the Atlanticin June; and Anne Perry will inaugurate a brand-new, pre-World War II series, starring “intrepid photographer” Elena Standish, with the September release Death in Focus (Ballantine).

• Before we leave Ann Cleeves too far behind, a reminder should be issued that Series 5 of Shetland, starring Douglas Henshall as Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez, will debut in the UK on BBC One next Tuesday, February 12. There’s no word yet n when those six new episodes will become available to Netflix users in the States.

• Among the digital audio series CrimeReads contributing editor Emily Stein showcases on her list of the “8 True-Crime Podcasts to Listen to in 2019” is The Murder Book, which premiered on January 28, and which Stein says “is the first podcast produced by bestselling crime novelist Michael Connelly.” She continues:
In Season 1, “The Tell Tale Bullet,” Connelly returns to his roots as a crime beat reporter to investigate a real, 30-year-old cold case of a fatal carjacking in Hollywood, and of a murderer who walked free. Connelly promises that every season of Murder Book will end with a crime solved; to get there, he employs a wide array of sources, including court recordings, wiretaps, and interviews with witnesses and detectives.

Complete with hardboiled narration and a jazzy soundtrack,
Murder Book is the perfect podcast both for fans of true crime, and fans of classic noir. It also takes a serious look at the limitations and flaws of our criminal justice system, which leaves the listener with the unavoidable impression that in the past three decades, far too little has changed.

• One podcast that isn’t mentioned in Stein’s wrap-up is We Never Solved Anything. No, I’d never heard of it either, until its hosts e-mailed me an invitation to listen. As they explain, “It is a funny podcast where we explore a new unsolved mystery theme each week such as serial killers, spontaneous human combustion, and medical mystery stories.” Find the 11 existing episode here.

• The Winter 2018/2019 edition of Mystery Readers Journal—built around the theme “Mystery in the American South—“is available now as a PDF and will shortly be available in hardcopy …,” writes editor Janet Rudolph. “We had so many articles, author essays, and reviews, that we had to split this themed issue into two.” A list of contents for this new issue, plus info on buying a copy, can be found here.

• I periodically like to revisit episodes from the classic NBC Mystery Movie series Columbo. Knowing whodunit, and sometimes remembering exactly how the rumpled Los Angeles police lieutenant pins the blame, doesn’t spoil the re-watching one iota. Not long ago I came across this piece The Columbophile, revealing which four among the almost 70 episodes of that show were star Peter Falk’s favorites. “It might come as a surprise to fans,” writes the blog’s anonymous editor, “that pivotal episodes ‘Etude in Black’ and ‘Murder by the Book’ don’t feature here—particularly ‘Etude,’ which starred Falk’s BFF John Cassavetes. Instead, all of Falk’s personal favourites come from Seasons 3 or 5, when the show was more firmly established. Notably, three of the four are from Season 5 alone. What does this tell us? Well for one thing it suggests that Falk was at his happiest in the crumpled raincoat once he had a couple of full seasons under his belt.”

• As we prepare for the June release of James Ellroy’s This Storm (Knopf)—book two in his “Second L.A. Quartet” (following 2014’s Perfidia)—Steve Powell, a British student of that author’s work, feels compelled to ask, “is James Ellroy losing his touch?” Writing in his blog, The Venetian Vase, Powell continues: “I’ve decided to broach the subject as the critical response to Ellroy’s last novel Perfidia was mixed, as were the reviews for his novel before that Blood’s a Rover. … I’ve sensed a certain weariness about Ellroy’s recent efforts when I talk with fans of the author. … So Ellroy cannot expect his new novel, This Storm, to be met with universal acclaim as critical opinion has started to shift. In fact, the opposite may be the case. Ellroy may have to win back some critics who are getting cynical about the author’s once unassailable reputation.”

• What a terrific couple of short-story titles, from classic crime-fiction magazines found here and here. On top of that, both of these publications feature cover art by the great Norman Saunders.

• Mystery Tribune chooses the “45 Best Cozy Mystery Novels.”

• New York bookshop proprietor and anthologist Otto Penzler continues to count down what he contends are the “Greatest Crime Films of All-Time.” Most recently he has considered The Ipcress File (1965), The Kennel Murder Case (1933), and The Glass Key (1942). Keep track of this developing series here.

• While we’re on the subject of Penzler, it should be mentioned that he will be partnering with Pegasus Books to launch Scarlet, an imprint “specializing in psychological suspense aimed at female readers.” Publishers Weekly explains: “The new venture has [tapped] Luisa Smith, longtime buying director at Book Passage, a Corte Madera, Ca., bookstore, to be Scarlet editor-in-chief. Nat Sobel, founder of the Nat Sobel Associates literary agency, will act as a consultant to the imprint. Scarlet will launch in winter 2020 with six to eight titles. The Scarlet list will be distributed by W.W. Norton, which also distributes the titles of its parent companies, Penzler Publishing and Pegasus Books.” Although there’s been some grumbling about the name Scarlet being applied to a literary line intended to promote women’s fiction and female authors (shades of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter!), and Penzler’s heated objections to the Mystery Writers of America’s decision to deny Linda Fairstein a Grand Master Award due to her involvement in a 1990 New York City rape-case prosecution left some authors questioning his compassion toward women, I look forward to seeing what Scarlet can contribute to the already rich field of psychological suspense novels.

• A similarly promising venture comes from Polis Books, which has announced the creation of Agora, an imprint designed to “focus on diverse voices, putting out between six and ten books per year.” Chantelle Aimée Osman will serve as the editor of this line, which plans to begin releasing books in the fall of 2019. • I’m not a big social-media user, but over the years I have established a Rap Sheet presence on Facebook, on Twitter, and on Google+. Now it appears that last page is set to vanish forever. I was recently given this warning:
In December 2018, we announced our decision to shut down Google+ for consumers in April 2019 due to low usage and challenges involved in maintaining a successful product that meets consumers’ expectations. We want to thank you for being part of Google+ and provide next steps, including how to download your photos and other content.

On April 2nd, your Google+ account and any Google+ pages you created will be shut down and we will begin deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts. Photos and videos from Google+ in your Album Archive and your Google+ pages will also be deleted. You can download and save your content, just make sure to do so before April. Note that photos and videos backed up in Google Photos will not be deleted.

The process of deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts, Google+ Pages, and Album Archive will take a few months, and content may remain through this time. For example, users may still see parts of their Google+ account via activity log and some consumer Google+ content may remain visible to G Suite users until consumer Google+ is deleted.
I don’t remember when I signed up for Google+, but I know I only did so because fellow blogger Bill Crider already had. Thankfully, my contributions to The Rap Sheet’s page there have been minimal. I’ll keep updating it for as long as possible, but if you notice that the Google+ link available from the right-hand column of this blog disappears in the next couple of months, you’ll know why.

Mark Taylor hired as CCO of California agency MeringCarson      Cache   Translate Page

Mark Taylor has spent his career making groundbreaking creative work, having been involved in iconic campaigns such as Mini Cooper’s ‘Let’s Motor,’ ‘Subservient Chicken’ for Burger King, and ‘Lamp’ for Ikea. Now, California-based agency MeringCarson has landed Taylor as its chief creative officer.

The 100-person California-based agency has offices in Sacramento and San Diego, and clients include Visit California, The Islands of Tahiti, Merlin Entertainments (Legoland), Pebble Beach Company, and San Diego Tourism Authority, among many others.

Not only has Taylor worked on some of the most prominent campaigns in advertising history, but he also served as the lead on multiple accounts, driving business results and revenue across every category for brands such as the US Air Force, American Express, Bayer, BMW, Brawny, Bud Light, GMC, KFC, S.C. Johnson & Son, Marshalls, Nestlé Waters, Norwegian Cruise Line, Southwest Airlines, Windows Phone, and Wrigley Company.

Taylor spent a good chunk of his career at Crispin, Porter + Bogusky (CP+B) where he was responsible for creating some of the agency’s most iconic work, such as the reincarnation of the King for Burger King and the ‘Small Business Saturday’ work for American Express, which won 10 Cannes Lions, including two Grand Prix awards.

“The most exciting moments in my career revolved around developing creative platforms that used bold brand purpose and action to drive consumer engagement,” said Taylor.  “So, I was naturally drawn to MeringCarson because of its similar focus on using experiences and social movements to achieve business results. (Founder) Dave (Mering) and I are aligned in our belief that it isn’t enough to simply be a good storyteller. In order to truly become a brand engrained in culture, you need to stand for something and consistently express it in everything you do.”

MeringCarson founder and chief executive Dave Mering said: “It isn’t often that you find someone with Mark’s marketing and creative chops, who is also humble. During the process, it was clear that he will not only add value to our clients’ businesses but that he will also help me continue to provide our employees with an outstanding place to do incredible work.

“Mark stood apart from other candidates because he lined up with our intention to expand our client roster and footprint in the US. We believe Mark’s work across multiple categories will attract marketers in key growth areas and that he will expand our profile outside of the California market. This is going to be an exciting time for our company and I am thrilled he will help us lead the agency over the next many years.”

Taylor most recently ran his own firm, Mark Taylor LLC, where he worked with agencies including BBDO, Digitas, FCB, Leo Burnett, mcgarrybowen, Publicis, VMLY&R, and others, leading campaigns or new business pitches for brands such as 3M, Blue Bunny, Ford, GMC, Goose Island, Indeed, Intel, Jeep, and Kia.

Prior to his own firm, Taylor served as executive vice-president and chief creative officer at Energy BBDO. During that time, the agency developed award-winning work including Bud Light’s ‘Up for Whatever’ campaign and the ‘Real-Life Pacman’ Super Bowl commercial, along with Extra’s ‘Sarah & Juan,’ an internet sensation that racked up 74 million views in its first week online.

Taylor replaces Greg Carson, who recently became partner/chief creative officer at Crown & Greyhound.

Blah blah blah. What does it make me? Somebody who stands behind her convictions.

I would NEVER declare that I yearned for the days before the internet as I REPEATEDLY commented on an anonymous forum from an anonymous account that i claimed was really me(again, Christina Rae dot com? Yep, you are just as anonymous).

So don’t claim you yearn for the days of yore, just claim you wish you weren’t so addicted to internet. That’s more truthful. Christina Rae is just as fake as an account as Aurelius, someguy, runner, flavio and all those other clowns, just because you picked a more real sounding name doesn’t mean you are any different or REAL.

You troll-a-lol like the rest of the dawgs here so don’t EVEN deny that crock-o-crap.

Sorry you are disabled and as far as isolation goes, YOU brought that on yourself and are dealing with it in the same manner as the rest of these dawgs. Rough rough.

Oh @16 I knew you'd be back! Did I hijack the thread? I mean the OP said they weren't going to read the comments, so what would be the point? I posted once and then people started posting directly to me, so I thought what the hell, why not respond. Now that I think about it, Relax started the pointed commentary directed at me, so maybe it's Relax that has all of the time to make up fake names and write comments to me. Though there have been quite a few people that used to be on this forum that got kicked off for trolling. Could be anyone. There are so many losers out there hiding behind their computers with nothing better to do than attack people they don't know online.

Regardless, whatever is said about me here (unless I post it) is pure conjecture. It's interesting to see how unimaginative it is though. I mean you take the time to make a new fake name and post a new comment at me and the best you can come up with is that I am an internet addicted, anonymous, hypocrite, bimbo and kook?

I do spend a lot of time online. I am physically disabled, I am unable to work and am isolated as my friends all live in other states and all have full time jobs. Blogtown PDX is one of the sites I read regularly. I guess you're just going to have to deal with me posting as much as I want and "hijacking" all the threads I want to hijack. It will certainly keep you occupied, making up new fake names and posting hateful comments directed at me. (If I'm addicted to the internet and you keep coming back to post comments about and to me over and over and over and over and over, what does that make you)?

European colonizers killed so many indigenous Americans that the planet cooled down, a new study reveals      Cache   Translate Page

Columbus

  • Following Christopher Columbus' arrival in North America in 1492, violence and disease killed 90% of the indigenous population — nearly 55 million people — according to a new study.
  • Diseases like smallpox, measles, and influenza, which colonizers brought to the Americas, were responsible for many millions of deaths.
  • The new research also reveals that following this rapid population decline and the subsequent reduction in land use, there was a global cooling trend.

Prior to Columbus's arrival in the Americas in 1492, the area boasted thriving indigenous populations totaling to more than 60 million people.

A little over a century later, that number had dropped close to 6 million.

European contact brought with it not only war and famine, but also diseases like smallpox that decimated local populations. Now, a new study published in the journal Quarternary Science Reviews shows that those deaths occurred on such a large scale that they led to a "Little Ice Age": an era of global cooling between the 16th and mid-19th century.

Researchers from University College London found that, after the rapid population decline, large swaths of vegetation and farmland were abandoned. The trees and flora that repopulated that unmanaged farmland started absorbing more carbon dioxide and keeping it locked in the soil, removing so much greenhouse gas from the atmosphere that the planet's average temperature dropped by 0.15 degrees Celsius.

Typically, experts look to the Industrial Revolution as the genesis of human-driven climate impacts. But this study shows that effects may have began some 250 years earlier.

"Humans altered the climate already before the burning of fossil fuels had started," the study's lead author, Alexander Koch, told Business Insider. "Fossil fuel burning then turned up the dial."

More than 50 million indigenous people perished by 1600

Experts have long struggled to quantify the extent of the slaughter of indigenous American peoples in North, Central, and South America. That's mostly because no census data or records of population size exist to help pinpoint how many people were living in these areas prior to 1492.

To approximate population numbers, researchers often rely on a combination of European eyewitness accounts and records of "encomienda" tribute payments set up during colonial rule. But neither metric is accurate — the former tends to overestimate population sizes, since early colonizers wanted to advertise riches of newly discovered lands to European financial backers. The latter reflects a payment system that was put in place after many disease epidemics had already run their course, the authors of the new study noted.

So the new study offers a different method: the researchers divided up North and South America into 119 regions and combed through all published estimates of pre-Columbian populations in each one. In doing so, authors calculated that about 60.5 million people lived in the Americas prior to European contact.

Once Koch and his colleagues collated the before-and-after numbers, the conclusion was stark. Between 1492 and 1600, 90% of the indigenous populations in the Americas had died. That means about 55 million people perished because of violence and never-before-seen pathogens like smallpox, measles, and influenza.

According to these new calculations, the death toll represented about 10% of the entire Earth's population at the time. It's more people than the modern-day populations of New York City, London, Paris, Tokyo, and Beijing combined.

The disappearance of so many people meant less farming

Using these population numbers and estimates about how much land people used per capita, the study authors calculated that indigenous populations farmed roughly 62 million hectares (239,000 square miles) of land prior to European contact.

That number, too, dropped by roughly 90%, to only 6 million hectares (23,000 square miles) by 1600. Over time, trees and vegetation took over that previously farmed land and started absorbing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

brazil indigenous

Carbon dioxide traps heat in the planet's atmosphere (it's what human activity now emits on an unprecedented scale), but plants and trees absorb that gas as part of photosynthesis. So when the previously farmed land in North and South America — equal to an area almost the size of France — was reforested by trees and flora, atmospheric carbon-dioxide levels dropped.

Antarctic ice cores dating back to the late 1500s and 1600s confirm that decrease in carbon dioxide.

That CO2 drop was enough to lower global temperatures by 0.15 degrees Celsius and contribute to the enigmatic global cooling trend called the "Little Ice Age," during which glaciers expanded.

Lingering doubts

Not all scientists are convinced by Koch's explanation.

"The researchers are likely overstating their case," Joerg Schaefer from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, told Live Science. "I am absolutely sure this paper does not explain the cause of the carbon dioxide change and the temperature change during that time."

Koch said that some of the drop in carbon dioxide could have been caused by other, natural factors like volcanic eruptions or changes in solar activity. But he and his colleagues concluded that the death of 55 million indigenous Americans explained about 50% of the overall reduction in atmospheric carbon dioxide.

"So you need both natural and human forces to explain the drop," he said.

Koch said the findings revise our understanding of how long human activity has been influencing Earth's climate.

"Human actions at that time caused a drop in atmospheric CO₂ that cooled the planet long before human civilization was concerned with the idea of climate change," he and his co-authors wrote.

But they warned that if a similar reforestation event were to happen today, it wouldn't do much to mitigate the Earth's current rate of warming. The drop in atmospheric carbon dioxide that happened in the 1600s only represents about three years' worth of fossil fuel emissions today, Koch said.

"There's no way around reducing fossil fuel emissions," he said, adding that reforestation and forest restoration remain crucial, too.

@22 Hey SlateGrey! I never imagined commenting on an I, Anonymous column would garner so much attention. Someone actually takes the time to create (and then delete after they post their comment) a new hate account every time they post! Highly motivated trolling, for sure.

Re: Most, if not all....      Cache   Translate Page

Why the CR hate? The comments CR leaves are articulate, thoughtful, and actually encourages discourse, as opposed to the majority of the other whiny edgelording piss baby ones. Like someone literally made a hate account?
Hey Christina, keep it up, you're really getting under their papery thin skin and it is funny as hell.

Or stand firm in your convictions. I stand firm in my conviction that you are a troll. And the more you write and misspell words and use incorrect grammar, I am beginning to tell myself a story about you (since I don't know anything, not for sure) that you are young and dumb.

Oh and I forgot to say, one stands BY their convictions, not behind them. : D

Re: Most, if not all....      Cache   Translate Page

@18 So you are different than I am and woudn't think or behave like me, so what? You can say I am fake, but I am not, Christina Rae is my name. Oh so you don't believe me and keep saying I am fake and I'm supposed to do something to prove otherwise? I don't think so.

Nor did I bring my disability upon myself. What a weird thing to say.

Your insistence on returning and upping the nastiness factor of your comments is so fascinating. I can't imagine (nor will I make up a story) what it is that motivates to you to do what you are doing. I did notice how you claim to be female, interesting touch.

All of the people posting here are strangers to each other. Some people who post real thoughts and commentary on the IAs posted and many just troll and post comments on the comments and the commenters and in general do their best to get a reaction from people.

Keep coming back, I'll respond every time. You clearly want attention. Do you want me to respond in a specific way? I haven' given you what you want yet, you haven't gotten what you''re looking for or trying to get or you'd be done. It's unlikely you'll be satisfied.

Shall we go all night? What else do you have to say? Will you come back with yet another retort? What? Huh? Sorry, I need you to speak up. I can't hear you.

Re: Anti-vax is a particularly ugly form of privilege      Cache   Translate Page

In Oregon daycares follow the same rules as schools—so they are required to collect and report vaccination status, but a student can get a waiver based on medical, religious, or philosophical reasons. Vaccination rates are reported for each vaccine for all licensed centers, in home and otherwise, but no names are attached. My son is in infant care and I have to drive a long distance and pay even more $$$ to attend a center with a >99% vaccination rate. I considered a few closer to my home (I live in an affluent part of Portland) and the rates were disturbingly low. Presumably a center could refuse to honor non-medical exemptions, but the state does not require that.

Hi There,

How's your day going? Smoothly I hope!

Things are going pretty well here. The reason I wanted to reach out to you is to discuss your organization's online presence.

I'm sure you already know it's essential to make a good first impression; and online, that's your website. To give you an understanding of what's possible today, I like to offer businesses a free mockup of their homepage.

No commitment or anything from you. Just your permission to create a sample of your site in Photoshop so you can see what a few updates can do.

Let me know what you think and I can have something to you within a week.
Thanks so much for your time,

Regards,
Chris Lanello

Venezuelas nationella peak oil      Cache   Translate Page

Participants A relative sample (parents, spouses, close others; n = 134) derived from a statewide cohort of people with TBI recruited to the multicenter Brain Injury Outcomes Study. Setting A consecutive series of referrals over a 2-year period to the 11 adult units of the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program in New South Wales, Australia. Main Outcome Measures Relative measures included General Health Questionnaire–28 (psychological distress), Family Assessment Device (family functioning), and BIOS Family Needs Questionnaire (perceived adequacy of support). The degree of impairment and level of participation of the person with TBI were assessed by the Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory and Sydney Psychosocial Reintegration Scale, respectively. Analysis Path analysis examined the varying contribution of impairment, participation, and support variables to both relative distress and disturbances in family functioning. Results The overall model accounted for substantial proportions of the variance in psychological distress and family functioning. Importantly, the distress experienced by relatives was not due to the direct impact of the neurobehavioral impairments, but the effect of these impairments was mediated by the degree of community participation achieved by the person with TBI. Conclusions The model highlights the impact on families when the person with TBI experiences restrictions in participation. Clinically, a greater focus on the provision of respite or case management services may assist in reducing relative distress.

          Nopocalypse '19      Cache   Translate Page
It was actually snowing as the sun shone under a bright winter's sky.
As if to say, "Ha, WeatherDude, you failed."

Deke's Note: Sometimes, you just gotta drink until the pain goes to a place that doesn't bother you. No, I'm not an alcoholic. I wait until my week is done, then I tip a few whiskeys (or whiskys) to alleviate the aches and pains of an aging bus operator. This is simply a writing exercise performed following a 54-hour week behind the wheel. I'm under the influence now, but not then. Here's my take on the snowstorm that never was, or might still happen when the weatherman is under the influence and feeling invincible.

When I was a newbie, each day was an adventure. Now it's a race to see if I can make it to the end of another day of driving. The past few days have been an exercise in faith (of my own intuition) vs. the sensationalism of (fake) news weathermen wreaking havoc with hysterical weather forecasts. I should trust myself more than I do them. While January was nice and dry/sunny for this time of year in Portland, I knew something would come about to slap us upside the head weather-wise in February. Here it is, and instead of the face-slam, we were treated to a HAHA in which the weatherman was drastically incompetent... again.

Mr. Weatherman gave the grocery stores a windfall when he predicted "14-18 inches of snow on Saturday and Sunday." Even that dreadfully-tasting hipster kale was stripped of Freddie's shelves by Friday night, not to mention the cheapest 18-racks of brewskies. Knowing the folly associated with heeding the predictions of Portland's overpaid weather dudes/ettes, this Homey didn't buy into that game. We've been burned by sensational forecasts before, only to have a real snowstorm catch us by surprise when nothing was forecast. Besides, my apartment's management is too cheap to provide us with a freezer big enough to simultaneously stock much more than a few bags of veggies or fries. It's more cost-effective to wait it out, then walk over as necessary and purchase whatever remains on the shelves. (They couldn't even give us a fridge with a rack inside the freezer, let alone one that's wider than my pansa.)

There's a grammatical error here...
Picked up my bus today just under 10 minutes late. Kudos to the driver I relieve. That's pretty good, considering she was running with full chains on dry pavement all morning. (Thanks, Mr. Weatherdude Failure.) I can't blame management (this year) for making the call to put hard chains on our duals, because every channel seemed to be screaming "SNOWFALL OF THE CENTURY." Turns out, a few flurries here and there, but nada everywhere else. I just shook my head and told myself, "you've got this Deke, whatever Ma Nature feeds us." Turns out it was just another Super Sale advertisement for the grocery stores. As a newbie, I might have shivered a bit in anticipation of a rough day. Now, it's an exciting challenge to ensure I avoid sliding into trouble. It turned into a disappointing chunka-thunka roll into unnecessary bondage.

I rolled hard chains onto dry streets all day. It was 25mph the duration of my 12-hour roll. Luckily, my normal onslaught of Saturday passengers chose to stay cozy at home, and I ran on-time about 90 percent.

Waking earlier than usual after my late-night weekday run, I stumbled out of dream nirvana shortly after the first snooze alarm to squint through the blinds. Whiteness flurried about, my car sitting under four inches of powder. Big freakin' deal, I thought. Still, it didn't mean I could slack. No telling what the rest of town looked like after last night's Snowmageddon '19 forecast. Better get there early and not risk an oversleep if something en route to work slowed me down.

After a scant five hours of pillow time, I stumbled into the shower and dressed myself a full 45-minutes earlier than I normally do. Gotta get to work, it's the transit operator's code, I said to myself. No snow days for bus drivers. Those are for corporate wussies, not front line transit workers. It's a matter of pride to a seasoned operator: show up no matter the conditions, and do your job. We take working America to work, and take pride in it. And they depend upon us to get them there. Nurses, maids, construction workers, doctors, restaurant personnel, transit management... we get you there. Corporate America, students, teachers... you can take the day off if an errant snowflake drops into your yard, but everyone else is expected to be there. And we're your ride.

As I rattled along the dry pavement all day, I marveled at how few people believed the forecaster. My bus was only half as full as a normal weekend day. Just as well. At 25mph maximum, I rolled along on time all day until the end. My last run just happens to be the final full-length run of my line, so running late is okay. I don't want to leave anyone behind, or they can expect an expensive Uber or Lyft ride home in freezing temps. So late I am, on the last run. No big deal anyway... I get paid by the minute either way.

Rolling to my road relief 45-minutes earlier
than usual.... it was all for naught.
Most people were simply the normal "thank you" riders. It seemed our weather was a total letdown. All the preparation and hype warranted not a single "thank you for working today." It was just business as usual. "You got me there, good enough," was the vibe I felt from the passengers. Nothing special, just another weather anomaly, nothing to get excited about. Just as well... after 40 hours on a Jerry Springer route, this is my chillaxation roll.

SNOWpocalypse '19... so far, it's "NOpocalypse." I could be wrong, but my bones tell me it's just gonna be business as usual in Portland the next few weeks. My forecast: cold, windy and wet. The rest is pure speculation. Typical Northwest weather. But mark me: next winter holds a special sequence of slippery shit. We're due for a big one. Just not this year.

Don't slip when you happen to diss the weather dude, y'all. It might hurt ya.

My mom worked at a high end woman's clothing store downtown. We kids loved the indoor swiming pool and our mom loved the roof top bar. Several years ago i stopped in to see it. Sadly the pool bar resturant are all gone. It's low income apts. It was a great place to live.. walk to all the movie houses on Broadway and a short buss ride to see the Portland beavers play, or oaks amusement park.

Co-workers 'A' & 'M' went on a couple dates. Then A put the kybosh on things, which is fine, but also began repeated hostile episodes towards M in the workplace, often noticed by other co-workers.

After several weeks of on-and-off hostilities, M feared interactions with A and started counseling to cope with the hostilities. M was advised to minimize unnecessary contact beyond simple greetings.

In response, A became angrier with more hostilities, often noticed by co-workers. M then suspected A might be suffering extreme jealousy since finding out M has friends (though only friends) of the opposite sex. M felt bad, tried everything from pouring M's heart out (dumb-ass M, but ignored by A) to backing-off and saying no more than 'hello'. This again angered A causing more hostilities, which A refused to acknowledge or explain.

After a YEAR of A's on-and-off hostilities, M was desperate to end the 'persecution games' and asked A to either a) remove the kybosh if that's the issue (stupid M), b) commit to being civil and stop the hostilities, or c) worst case avoid unnecessary contact going forward. Again A denied the hostilities, not even agreeing to try to be civil, and started bad-mouthing M to co-workers. M then believed A was unable to control A's hatred and hostility, and that it may never end. M began tuning-out and ignoring A, waiting until A can at least commit to being civil (yeah, like that's gonna happen).

YEARS go by. They have work-related conversations, but otherwise M STILL instinctively tunes-out A for fear of triggering hostilities. Is M a super-wus or what? Meanwhile, A STILL refuses to commit to being civil or otherwise resolve things. Who does that? Is A schizo or just sadistic?

Two very f'd-up people.

Stay away from kids- they don't need your input. You are a bad influence.

          DTMFA?      Cache   Translate Page
I have this friend, who is a complex character that I have seen a therapist about and THEY didn't know what to make of him. He's costing me my mental health with a ganja habit that has very clearly, for years, been terrible for me to be around - words that have come out of my mouth - and there are too many behaviors to ask for behavior changes. And he is my roommate now because Life and Stupidity. How do I DTMFA with my circumstances?

This friend, let's call him O, met me in March 2014. We quickly bonded over - oh yes, smoking weed. At the end of 2014, O asked me to move in to replace his roommate, who had to leave because him and her had a thing/didn't have a thing ... ?

It was odd. I let it slide. There was ganj to distract me from the first, gigantic glaring warning sign this person has some issues around boundaries. To this day, I'm wondering if he did the coercive sexual assault thing and can't quite wrap his mind around "That's what I did" and maintain a cohesive sense of self identity as a good person.

We move in and he's like whoa, martial arts? So I taught him some martial arts ... yowch. I got my face shoved against a wall hard enough to leave some PTSD triggers around neck and facial massage, practicing martial arts with other people, and him.

I moved out in a panic, wrecked mess when our lease ended. My life fell apart in the subsequent year. He was, after a few months, there - one of two friends who was. Patiently listening, doing some of the emotional labor pieces we belabor men to do here on MeFi.

It took a while - October of 2016 before I move into a home, April of 2017 to move out of the first immediately apparent abuser's living room for my mental health ... and the whole time, he's there, always supportive and supplying the ganj as we pave our way to having a good time together. We train for an ultramarathon, try for it, fail together, play guitar together, pave our way through the solar system in Warframe together ... the best of friends again. My craftiness, my queerness even - by proximity of who he hangs out with - is pushed to the side for this relationship. I love those pieces.

I assert a boundary around substance somewhere between the first 3 month ultra thing and the second one. Just need space from it, I said. I caved in the end, but there's pressure there too that in retrospect I cannot own.

Time flows on. He meets this girl at work! The girl is 17, but living on her own without parental support when they meet, and they start hanging out a lot. He confesses that he read her journal entry, and I'm still silent about it to this day even though as they're cuddled up now, in the other room, I can't help but think about the metaphor of building a house on quicksand.

She turns 18, and they're dating. YAAAY! I flip out because in the process of getting to know her as a coworker, I quickly saw she had some fear of intimacy stuff and was catfishing around sexuality at work. I do not feel safe, now, with her proximity to my life. Her behaviors match the woman who did not nice things to my brain a little more than I'm comfortable.

Life goes on, as it does, and suddenly it's December of 2017 when - plot twist- O has a really big problem. In his work as an massage therapist, sometime really early on in his career, he'd met this client and they'd had this thing ... where she paid for his apartment partially, helped him buy his truck, bought him a 1000$ guitar as a graduation gift? I had always wondered about all of the above ...

For the record, I had to edit the above the line post here and rather than ask for simple "Help?" make it clear that this ... this is already waaaay too much as I'm typing it out. DTMFA should have happened years ago. Like right then. When I tried!

I SNAP when I find this out because the woman comes into work. NOPE NOPE NOPE what a DUMPSTER FIRE and NO MORE DUMPSTER FIRES NEAR MY LIFE I tell myself as I block him on all social media and make it clear to friends what he'd done was NOT OKAY. I think his girlfriend is insane for staying with him, and mock him openly in front of her at work for a few weeks before settling into a weird, fucked up silence.

Outside of that, I go on a music writing spree over three months the likes of which I hadn't seen in a decade, notice the profoundity of my relationships increase as I suddenly am not using substance, and feel like my sleep habits/mental health stuff starts to stabilize! I feel giddy as life begins to crystallize.

Friends, universally, take his side. She was abusive. She stalked him after. She was ... you bring on the hot takes, they said it directly or indirectly. You should talk to him. He misses you. I hadn't made any new friends outside of work, sighed, and tried to pick it up again. Substance immediately came with it, and has to this day.

Final pieces: at the end of last year, a van drove into my living room. If this has read like an episode of Arrested Development, it feels like one from where I'm standing. I was taken in by family, and because Oscar's lease was up, he was going to get a place! Yay! The first place we applied, we were denied. But he REALLY WANTED IT so he applied on his own ... and here I am, off the lease because I'd rather deal with all of the above shit than my extremely abusive aunt who will destroy every part of me that's sacred in her need for control over people around her. Wait, is this her or O? Anyway, I'm left wondering when I consented to this particular apartment and REALLY would love to have yet another conversation in my life where I go, "So this thing?" "You're an asshole for bringing that up?" and instead of dropping it, hound him. Be low grade psychologically abusive and taunt him about it if he can't cope with being asked a challenging question around consent. Is that a fair conversational tactic around something this big? As you can hear, I'm used to being shut down when these kinds of questions come up and finding ways to slide sideways through it.

Anyway, that's him. Onto me - what a hot mess!

I clearly have a problem with the ganj. I spent 80$ this check that should have gone towards feeding me on it, and it's REALLY dumb luck I have meals for the rest of the pay period. The ounce I bought on 1/30/19 is gone ... by any standards, that's a REALLY big problem. I've had the conversations with him before, as noted above. I'm up to 3 times now - once at the end of when we lived together, once between the two rounds of ultra training, and once after I invited him back into my life after shutting him out at the end of 2017. I'm grateful for the quiet place he's provided, but I'm just as triggered as when I lived in the roach infested shithole with the ex convict who made gay sex advances and was generally one of the creepiest pieces of shit I've ever known. Because I'm sick of being hungry, and sick of being fogged over while I try to do the emotional work for my PTSD, and sick of his bad boundary bullshit, I've snapped where the drug habit is concerned as of a few hours ago, sleeping only 4 hours because cannabis is a REM inhibitor. Waking up angry from PTSD ... I better learn to cope, to love and accept that the anger is there to keep me safe, and not make it anyone elses' problem because masking it this way sure as shit ain't workin. I mean, what a dumpster fire O is, and he's not the worst dumpster fire who smoked weed that's entered my life!

My family isn't willing to have me stay or will compromise my mental health to just drop O like he's hot and stay with them, universally. I've asked already. Cuz, gotta be real mefites, as I typed this out it's as crystal clear as it gets that DTMFA is in order for this dumpster fire of a boundary mess and I am too old to be playing with fire this way.

Currently, out of the roughly 1500-1800/mo (commission based income) I make, 800-850 of that goes right to Oscar for living expenses. Another 400 goes right into my face because of an autoimmune/inflammatory response to all 8 of the most common allergens (had bloodwork, self tested repeatedly as I told myself, "The bloodwork's full of shit," and watched my health magically improve only when I adhere to the diet super strictly. I am aware of the psychological elements concerning diet, reading studies here on mefi and all, and don't care to deal with systemic joint pain/3 day long dull headaches/puffiness/inability to heal from the stresses of massage on the joints). That remaining amount goes into student loans (150/mo because I want it out of my life), cell phone and two subscription services (gym and Spotify), and (has in the past) gone towards some tiny measure of entertainment, which somehow went over budget and ate into food when ganja or other addictive habits (not substances) are concerned. I live and work in the west side of Portland - you know, the expensive side. Yaay for societal pressures that we post about daily on MeFi. The list of mefites who have posted about the intersection of politics and mental health, combined with Johann Habi's Lost Connections book, helped me put my mental health issues into a greater context.

Handling the social consequences will be easy, once the initial breakup is over. "How is O? I haven't heard from him in a bit, and he's bad about texting. What's he up to these days?" goes a long way towards (A) Maintaining the fiction of warmth (B) Using subtext to be clear, "We haven't talked in a while," and directing the conversation away from why we haven't talked and towards him and his life. I do wish him well, just ... whoa, maybe I shoulda dealt with the abusive aunt an extra month to get out of this mess. Wait, her 19yo son uses too, and is happy to share!

Anyway, enough scathing commentary about my life. I want a living space that's cleanable, quiet, where I can fucking wear a skirt and not have to deal with a stoner. Is all 4 of those too much to ask? I'm at my wits end. How do I get him out, ASAP, and not have to sleep outside again? Budgetary, social and boundary commentary, and self emotional work to look at related to this all appreciated.

Examining the Low FODMAP Diet for Functional Bowel Disorders       Cache   Translate Page
Host: Kathy King, RDN
Guest: Patsy Catsos
FODMAPs are short chain carbohydrates (oligosaccharides), disaccharides, monosaccharides and related alcohols that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine. For patients with irritable bowel syndrome, Celiac disease, or inflammatory bowel disorders, ingestion of these carbohydrates can significantly worsen disease symptoms. How are low FADMAP diets constructed to control this nutritional issue, and where do patients need help and guidance maintaining these diets? Host Kathy King welcomes dietitian Patsy Catsos, author of IBS Free at Last. Ms. Catsos has a private practice in Portland, ME and has been an early adopter of the FODMAP approach for patients with functional bowel disorders.

The Icy Touch (Grimm, Bk 1)      Cache   Translate Page

There once was a man who lived a life so strange, it had to be true.  Only he could see what no one else can: the darkness inside, the real monster within.  And he's the one who must stop them.

This is his calling.  This is his duty.  This is the life of a Grimm.

When a torched body is found in an underground tunnel, Portland Police Captain Sean Renard takes one look at the victim's burned claws and assigns the case to homicide detectives Nick Burkhardt and Hank Griffin.  They soon discover that a criminal organization known as The Icy Touch is threatening Wesen into joining their illegal drug-smuggling operation, and brutally murdering those who refuse.  But as Nick closes in on the gang's charismatic and rithless leader, the Grimm uncovers an ancient -- and deadly -- rivalry...

In fact, authorities say that more any other problem, residents are calling the emergency hotline to complain about homeless people even when immediate danger is not present. And we’ll be gathering for a party protest to say: NO to culture-washing, NO to pink-washing, NO to Eurovision being hosted in Apartheid Israel! Come through! Bring flags, placards and energy for singing along to Palestine solidarity versions of Eurovision and pop classics! For more information on the global Boycott Eurovision campaign: https://bdsmovement.net/boycott-eurovision-2019 ** Love Eurovision, Hate Apartheid! Protest at the BBC Join the protest at the Eurovision: You Decide event, taking place from 4pm on Friday 8th February at MediaCityUK, the BBC Headquarters in Salford Quays, calling on the BBC to withdraw from the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest hosted by Apartheid Israel. The demonstration will begin when the audience of the show arrives soon after 4pm and we invite you to join us for Palestinian music and a rally with Palestinian cultural figures that will run until 7pm, so people can come and participate after work. The public will be choosing who goes through to the final in a live TV show, Eurovision: You Decide. We will urge contestants, hosts and BBC workers to heed Palestinian civil society’s call for the boycott of Eurovision hosted by Israel’s apartheid regime, which continues to massacre Palestinian protesters in besieged Gaza and imprison the Palestinian population under a decades-long illegal military occupation. We are urging all participants follow the example of British group The Tuts, who courageously announced they had refused an invitation to enter the UK’s Eurovision contest. https://twitter.com/TheTutsBand/status/1088465070714167296 We are appealing to all the singers and songwriters to boycott the contest hosted by Israel, just as they would have boycotted the South African apartheid regime. We are also calling for an end to the BBC’s complicity in “Brand Israel”, the Israeli government’s official policy of artwashing its crimes against the Palestinian people. Israel regularly uses culture to cover up, justify and distract from its oppressive regime of military occupation and apartheid against the Palestinian people. Just days after Israel’s Eurovision win, Israeli forces massacred 62 Palestinians in Gaza, including six children, as they demonstrated for freedom and refugee rights. Since the Great Return March protests began on March 30th 2018, at least 205 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the besieged Gaza Strip. More than 18,000 others have been injured, including thousands shot with live sniper fire. Join the protest and take a stand against BBC artwashing apartheid.
