Amazon and Hulu's algorithms are recommending conspiracy theory films, and the consequences could be more serious than you might think      Cache   Translate Page

Amazon conspiracy theory 2_1

  • Amazon and Hulu continue to host and algorithmically suggest conspiracy films.
  • This comes as platforms like Roku and YouTube are removing conspiratorial accounts or preventing their search and recommendation algorithms from surfacing them.
  • Experts warn that hosting this type of conspiratorial content could spread misinformation, and even encourage people to commit violence.

"There is a sinister and secret group of people who roam the globe," an omniscient narrator says. "They control everything from banks to the media. They own the world."

That claim invoking the New World Order conspiracy theory comes from a film called "A Conspiracy To Rule: The Illuminati," available for streaming on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.

Both Amazon Prime Video and Hulu categorize the film as a "documentary." Hulu put it in the site's "conspiracy" section, which is mostly populated by films about aliens.

The willingness to stream such material, and the fact that the companies have made no public moves against conspiracy content, stands in contrast to the torrent of tech companies that have made efforts to reject certain conspiracy-oriented and misleading content, and shows a rift in how they treat misinformation published on their platforms.

Broadly, companies like Facebook, YouTube, and Apple have claimed to have made efforts to suppress misinformation on their platforms following the revelation that Russia had weaponized such content in an effort to influence the 2016 election. Amazon Prime Video, despite hosting user-submitted content, has made no public moves against misinformation. Nor has Hulu.

Last year Roku, Facebook, Apple, Spotify, and YouTube kicked notorious conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his InfoWars show off their platforms.

Apple said it did so because the company "does not tolerate hate speech." Facebook said Jones had violated its policies on hate speech and graphic violence by "glorifying violence" and "using dehumanizing language."

But Amazon Prime Video's algorithm still recommends conspiracy films, including Jones' own, to streamers. The 9/11 conspiracy film "Loose Change," which baselessly claims that the 2001 tragedy was a false flag operation, is a recommended "documentary" on Prime Video, despite presenting a thesis that most experts have contradicted.

Those who study misinformation warn that the consequences of offering conspiracy films could be serious, ranging from the spread of hate to enabling nefarious state actors to promote their own agenda.

Neither Amazon nor Hulu responded to INSIDER's requests for comment.

The films feature debunked and discriminatory arguments

A Conspiracy To Rule: The Illuminati

On the front page of Amazon Prime Video, "Loose Change" appears as a "recommended Documentary Movie" for some users.

The 9/11 conspiracy film fits into the larger "puppet master" theme found in most conspiracy media, and generally spreads assertions based on pseudoscience that have been largely discredited.

According to the anti-Semitism watchdog Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the film "draws from the American Free Press, a wellspring of anti-Semitic 9/11 propaganda, as well as the work of anti-Semitic writer Christopher Bollyn, as sources to bolster its claims about the alleged government cover-up of the 9/11 attacks."

Loose Change conspiracy film Amazon Prime Video

The conspiracy films available on the streaming platforms go beyond kooky tales about alien abductions (though they have those too), and present arguments framed as truth that have largely been debunked as misinformation or even been shown to be derived from hateful ideology.

"Zeitgeist: The Movie", which proposes that 9/11 was a conspiracy orchestrated by bankers to better leverage control over the masses, is also available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, and is labeled a "documentary."

In 2011, Tablet Magazine described the film as "steeped in far-right, isolationist, and covertly anti-Semitic conspiracy theories." ABC News interviewed a former friend of Gabrielle Giffords' shooter Jared Loughner who said the film had "a profound impact on Jared Loughner's mindset and how he views the world that he lives in."

"A Conspiracy To Rule: The Illuminati," which is featured on Amazon and Hulu, traces the roots of a supposed global, elite conspiracy to control the world through coded messages.

Andre Oboler, law lecturer and CEO of the Online Hate Prevention Institute, told INSIDER that streaming services offering such films boosts interest in the conspiracy theories they promote.

"The underlying antisemitic conspiracy theory at play here is that of Jewish power, be it accusations about controlling governments, banks and financial markets, news and media, or international events," he said.

And such ideas can have real-world consequences. A similar anti-Semitic conspiracy theory appeared to be the driving force in the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting.

Robert Bowers, who reportedly shouted "all Jews must die" before killing 11 people, seemingly made numerous posts on social media about a Jewish conspiracy to bring immigrants into the country as part of the migrant caravan. In the weeks before the shooting, he posted conspiratorial gifs and videos from Zionist Report, a publication that makes content that supposedly "questions the prerogative of the Zionist movement" by posting numerous conspiracy theories involving Jews and Israel.

Screen Shot 2019 02 04 at 3.01.05 PM

"A Conspiracy To Rule," which traces a vague conspiracy that supposedly continues to this day, finds the origins of the conspiracy in "system of Jewish philosophy," Jewish mysticism, and Kabala.

"There haven't been any Illuminati for over 200 years, any suggestion that any Illuminati existed after the mid-1780s is absurd, and if there is such a suggestion, then we're talking about fantasy," Michael Barkun, an expert on conspiracy theories at Syracuse University, told INSIDER.

"It's always dangerous when false ideas are presented as fact," Barkun added. He said the biggest risk associated conspiracy theories is "people taking action on the basis of false and dangerous beliefs."

Amazon Prime Video streams numerous other documentaries connecting Jewish history and the Rothschilds to world domination, including "One World Agenda: The Illuminati" and "Illuminati: The Grand Illusion."

Illuminati Amazon Prime Video

ADL extremist expert Mark Pitcavage told INSIDER that while movies such as "A Conspiracy To Rule" may not be explicitly anti-Semitic, they still pose a danger.

"Conspiracy theories lure in the credulous and can sometimes make them not merely believe but act on their beliefs," he said. "Over the years we have seen a number of violent incidents ... that were the result of people being motivated to take violent action as a result of conspiracy theories."

Barkun also noted a more subtle risk of conspiracy theory media — disillusionment.

"People may draw the conclusion that conventional politics is meaningless. If they genuinely believe that what happens in the world is a result of the hidden hand of some mysterious elite, then presumably ordinary political activity is meaningless as are the decisions of lawmakers and officeholders," he said. "This kind of material may alienate people from the political process and political participation."

Amazon and Hulu stand apart as platforms that have continued to feature conspiracy theories

Loose Change Amazon Prime Video

Amazon and Hulu's hosting and recommendation of conspiracy theory media are becoming increasingly unique.

In January, YouTube announced that it would work to prevent conspiracy theory videos or those containing misinformation from being included in its recommended videos, to avoid serving users conspiracy content users weren't seeking out. They continue to host plenty of conspiracy content, however.

The makers of "Loose Change" said in September that they had to remove the film from YouTube, but that it was still available on Amazon Prime Video and Google Play.

Amazon shows the potential echo chamber that recommendation algorithms can create.

Alongside "Loose Change," a series of other 9/11 conspiracy films are promoted for streaming, including "Conspiracy of Lies: Flight 3370 to 911", and "9/11: Ten Years of Deception."

Amazon recommendation conspiracy films

Hulu similarly suggests its conspiracy offerings after you consume any film in the category.

In August 2018, numerous tech companies took a step toward clamping down on conspiracy content, effectively removing the accounts of InfoWars and Alex Jones, who was one of the most popular conspiracy theorists on the internet.

Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Apple, Spotify, and others moved to remove Jones' accounts from their platforms in quick succession, with many saying his content violated their hate speech policies.

Amazon, on the other hand, continues to host numerous videos from Jones that it classifies as documentaries, including "The Obama Deception," and "Police State 4: The Rise of FEMA."

Conspiracy films could violate Amazon's hate speech policy

Amazon Prime

Out of the major streaming platforms, Amazon appears to recommend the most conspiracy material. A cursory search of "Illuminati," "New World Order," and "9/11" yielded over 35 results that suggested conspiracy, compared to 14 films in Hulu's conspiracy section, and 4 Netflix films that focus on aliens and the moon landing. Amazon's issue could be due in part to its Prime Video Direct service, which allows content creators to directly upload content.

Amazon, like many platforms, has a loose set of guidelines dictating what users are allowed to upload to its platform. "Graphic sexually explicit or violent acts" and content featuring "gratuitous nudity and/or erotic themes" is not allowed.

The company also has a hate speech policy that could potentially be applied to certain conspiracy films. "Content that promotes hate speech, incites racial or gender hatred, or promotes groups or organizations that support such beliefs," is not eligible according to Amazon.

Hulu does not have a publicly accessible policy against hate speech.

When Alex Jones and InfoWars were kicked off of numerous platforms, Apple, Facebook, and YouTube referenced similar hate speech policies as their basis for doing so.

Infowars youtube takedown notice

Amazon has faced scrutiny in the past for lax enforcement of rules on Prime Video and on its general site, and for allowing users to sell items like neo-Nazi children's books and swastika pendants on its marketplace before they were removed.

"Unfortunately, platforms tend to be reluctant to remove such content or to accept that it is a breach of their hate speech policies," Oboler said. "The bottom line is that such content attracts eyeballs, which translates into revenue."

Jennifer Grygiel, a communications professor at Syracuse University who specializes in emerging media and corporate social responsibility, told INSIDER the user-driven nature of Prime Video makes it dangerous, especially if users design content that is "at the edge" of the policy.

"Some viewers might be viewing this through Prime not realizing that it's another user, and they might give it more weight as a documentary than if it were on YouTube. It could actually give the air of more legitimacy if they assume it's being produced by an actual studio," Grygiel said. "There's potential even for state actors to go in and create this stuff — this could become targeted."

Grygiel said that without proper moderation, conspiracy theories and the latent hate within them could spread.

"They're tapping into memetic frameworks. As they're shared, they get strengthened over time," said Grygiel. "Not engaging in moderation makes it worse. It will grow and spread and become problematic."

Michael Thomas, Cameron Heyward and Denzel Ward Crack the Pro Football Focus Top 101 Players List      Cache   Translate Page

The NFL season is over, which means it's time to reflect on some of the league's best performances.

Pro Football Focus put together their annual list of the top-101 players based solely on their performance during the 2018-19 season.

The ratings system weighs each position equally, even though quarterback is arguably the most valuable position. And unlike other lists, it also takes playoff production into account.

When the dust settled, three Buckeyes cracked the top-101. Here's a look from Pro Football Focus:

89. DENZEL WARD, CLEVELAND BROWNS

Top 101 appearances: New entry

The second-highest-graded rookie cornerback this year, Ward lived up to his top-five billing. He allowed a catch rate of 53.7 and passer rating of 70.7 to transform the Browns’ secondary. We’ll be seeing his name on this list for years to come.

...

57. CAMERON HEYWARD, PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Top 101 appearances: 2

Heyward recorded an overall grade of 84.9 this year, the 16th-best mark among interior defenders and his second consecutive grade of 80.0 or higher. As usual, he was a force as a pass rusher and generated 59 total pressures on the year, the fifth-most among players at the position.

...

6. MICHAEL THOMAS, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

Top 101 appearances: 3

Thomas continued his emergence as one of the best wideouts in the league with his best season to date. His overall grade of 91.6 was second to only DeAndre Hopkins this year, and his WR rating of 124.0 was ninth-best.

A couple Buckeyes were notably missing from this year's edition of the list.

Joey Bosa was excluded for the first time and came it at No. 28, though he missed a substantial portion of the season with injury. Marshon Lattimore also made last year's list at No. 29, but did not make it this year. Ezekiel Elliott was another perceived snub as he led the league in rushing but did not crack the top-101 players.

Gang of serial killers murdering youg white men in the U.S      Cache   Translate Page

It's suspected the group might have already claimed hundreds of victims. Yet police agencies are uninterested in ferreting out the truth and instead write the killings off as accidents or undetermined. So say three retired NYPD detectives and a criminal-justice professor who have been investigating the deaths. The Daily Beast introduces the story, writing that on "the evening of Dec. 15, 2016, Dakota James called his friend Shelley in a panic." "He was cold, disoriented, and scared out of his mind, wandering the streets of downtown Pittsburgh, trying to find someone - anyone - who would help him," the site continues. "'I don't know where I am,' he told her, sobbing. 'I'm so cold. Please help me. I'm lost.'" James said the cops wouldn't help him. Confused, he told Shelley (her last name is kept confidential) he was on Pittsburgh's North Side when the cellphone location services he'd enabled with her put him on the South Side. What happened next was equally odd. Shelley drove to James' location, at a Springhill Suites on Water Street. "As she pulled up to the hotel," writes the Beast, "she saw a dark SUV in the wrong lane, facing the wrong direction. And Dakota was walking out of the hotel and straight toward the SUV." "'I pulled up not even 10 feet away from the SUV,' she said. 'I said, 'Dakota!' He turns, looks back then comes over to me, got in my car, and we left,'" the Beast also relates. James didn't appear drunk, Shelley says; he was walking straight and wasn't slurring words. Yet he didn't know how he'd wound up on the street and had lost four hours, between heading to some bars with coworkers at 7:15 p.m. and calling Shelley at approximately 11:15. So she suspected he'd been drugged. Yet James didn't want to talk much about the incident and the next day dismissed it as a bad hangover. Shelley might have done the same - except that James disappeared five weeks later. Forty days after that was found dead, floating in the Ohio River. Nonetheless, the Beast writes, his death was ruled an accidental drowning by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office. But a team of retired detectives and a gang expert believe he's one of about 100 victims of the Smiley-Face Killers, an alleged organized gang of serial killers that communicates on the dark web, with cells in dozens of cities across the United States. An additional 250 cases might be connected, but they can't prove it, they say. James fits the profile of the other suspected victims: smart, athletic, popular, college-age white men who went out drinking and never came home, they say. More recently, some alleged victims have been openly , like Dakota. Like him, weeks later, their bodies were discovered in lakes or rivers with smiley-face or other graffiti specifically connected to the group spray-painted nearby. So far they've connected about 70 deaths with similar graffiti nearby. About 30 of the men, including Dakota James, had the date- drug GHB in their system, according to the autopsy reports. "Dakota was clearly murdered," Kevin Gannon, a retired New York City police sergeant who has devoted his life to solving these cases, told The Daily Beast. There were a number of indications this was so, including what appeared to be ligature marks around James' neck, indicating strangulation (the Beast provides more detail). Moreover, it's now theorized that the SUV occupant(s) might have been stalking James or doing a test run and that he might have disappeared Dec. 15 if Shelley hadn't arrived when she did. Gannon's quest to track down what he calls "one of the most dangerous domestic terrorist groups in the United States" began in February 1997, when he was an NYPD detective investigating the death of 20-year-old white man Patrick McNeil, who was found floating in the East River. Two more men the same approximate age were found dead during the next 15 months. Gannon retired in 2001, but continued investigating the cases after promising McNeil's that he wouldn't stop till he found her son's killer(s). He enlisted the aid of his former partner, Anthony Duarte and, after watching a news report about similar deaths in the Midwest, also teamed with Dr. Lee Gilbertson, a criminal-justice professor and gang expert at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. It's certainly a curious case. "The so-called Smiley Face murders first burst on to the public scene in April 2008 when Gannon, Duarte, and Gilbertson held a news conference in New York City about the deaths," the Beast tells us. Yet they know far more about the group today. "'The level of sophistication of the group is a lot greater than we'd imagined,' the Beast relates Gannon as saying. 'Now we know they communicate with each other on the dark web. We know there's surveillance and counter-surveillance.'" Moreover, "Each city has its own cohort or cell, said Gilbertson." The professor emphasizes that at issue is a serial-killing gang, with perhaps 12 individuals per cell. Five will go and commit a murder; the next time it's a different five. It's continually evolving, too, as members age out and leave the fold. Consequently, "They're constantly recruiting," he says In fact, the Beast also quotes Gilbertson as saying, "Years ago, we were on their dark-web webpage but it was asking us to turn on a video camera so they could see who was about to type in the password and there's no way we were doing that. And we didn't even have the password. We'd just been given their URL, so [we] went to it because we were told that's how they communicate." So how can this group continue operating? Gannon and his team have evidence and suspects, but Gilbertson says that since law enforcement won't investigate the cases as murders, there's no pressure on gang members to snitch. They can remain on the Dark Web and in the shadows. Of course, law enforcement states the evidence is insufficient to reopen the cases. And while it's not politically correct to say (just correct to say), homosexuals do live a higher-risk lifestyle in general, sometimes frequenting seedy bars, attending orgies, and consorting with perhaps dangerous people. Yet it appears that many if not most victims were not homosexual. Then there's the elephant in the room. Is it a coincidence that every alleged victim is not only young and male, but white? Were there even the allegation that perhaps hundreds of black men were being murdered by a serial-killer gang, it would be huge national news (and likely blamed on the Trump era). Yet the closest the Beast comes to even mentioning the clear racial angle is, "The motives for the murders range from gang initiation to hate crimes, Gannon said." This brings something to mind. In the Rotherham child -gang scandal, the sexual abuse and torture of approximately 1,400 white British girls by primarily Muslim perpetrators was allowed to continue for 16 years because cowardly British authorities were afraid of "racism" accusations. They even went so far as to force a whistleblower into "diversity training," warning her that she must never again implicate Muslim men. So assuming Gannon's theory is correct, could the same phenomenon be evident here? Could American authorities be turning a "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" blind eye to these killings for fear of political correctness' bite? We already know this fear causes reluctance in many authorities to label "hate crimes" against whites just that. Yet Gannon is undeterred. "He has mortgaged his home and maxed out his credit cards trying to solve these cases," reports the Beast. Reflecting his dedication, victim Patrick McNeil's , 73-year-old Jackie, told the Beast that Gannon "is amazing.... On the anniversaries he'll call and say, 'I'm thinking about you.' I consider him a good friend." However valid Gannon's theory, it will finally be getting more attention. He, Duarte, Gilbertson, and another retired NYPD detective, Mike Donovan, will now be the stars of a television show, "Oxygen's Smiley Face Killers: The Hunt for Justice (video below), a new six-part limited series that premieres Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.," reports the Beast. "'It's been a difficult road and that's why we had to choose TV, to go to the court of public opinion,'" the Beast quotes Gannon as saying. "'We felt like there was no other option.'" The team hopes the publicity will inspire authorities to act.

Lawmakers’ Clairton Coke Works hearing draws suggestions, criticism over fire response      Cache   Translate Page

Steelworkers and residents near U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works packed a hearing Thursday afternoon that Democratic state lawmakers convened over recent air quality problems stemming from a December fire at the facility near Pittsburgh.

The fire damaged pollution control equipment, and a nearby air monitor has since detected several spikes of sulfur dioxide, an irritant that can cause respiratory issues.

Dr. Karen Hacker, director of the Allegheny County Health Department, told lawmakers that her agency is installing several new monitors in the area.

“We all are entitled to clean air,” she said to the panel, which was a joint Senate-House Democratic Policy Committee that met in Clairton.

She offered a host of recommendations to legislators and said her office is already working on them with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and legislative staff.

Among her suggestions are new policies to allow for the immediate shutdown of facilities whose emissions exceed air quality standards at monitors, as well as requiring that coke plants and other industrial facilities reduce production on days with bad air quality. She also asked for rules requiring  industry officials to notify communities affected by problems that could impact public health, and ones increasing monetary penalties for air quality violations.

“That’s precisely what we’re trying to get to, ways in which we can make it easier for you to do your work and be able to do what needs to be done to make sure these facilities are in compliance,” said Sen. Jay Costa, D-Forest Hills.

Jim Kelly, the county’s deputy director for environmental health, said the health department will levy an enforcement action against U.S. Steel once it has finished analyzing the recent air quality problems.

Lawmakers on Thursday also heard from union members, U.S. Steel representatives and environmental and health advocates.

Dr. Deborah Gentile, a local pediatric allergy and asthma expert, said Mon Valley residents have spent a month under an alert from the county health department urging them to limit outdoor activity. She has monitored local children’s health during that time, and she called for more specific guidance.

“Sports seasons are around the corner,” she said. “It’s going to be baseball season, track season, and these kids aren’t going to be able to go outside and play and do what they should be able to do.”

Other advocates renewed calls for Clairton Coke Works to go on “hot idle.” The facility would remain running, but it would not produce any coke, which is the product of heating coal at high temperatures. Coke is then used to make steel.

Michael Rhoads, plant manager of Clairton Coke Works, said if officials ordered the plant to idle, it would take several months to prepare. He said workers would need to install significant amounts of scaffolding and piping, as well as go through many detailed procedures.

“If you don’t do it right, the potential for an explosive atmosphere in the piping is significant, so it’s a big deal and we’ve got to make sure it’s done safely,” he said.

Union members expressed concern about the economic toll idling would place on steelworkers and others in the surrounding communities.

Don Furko, president of United Steelworkers Local 1557, represents 1,200 workers at Clairton. He said the coke produced at the plant feeds every U.S. Steel blast furnace.

“Simply put, if U.S. Steel ends up idling batteries, our members will lose their jobs,” he said. “This will begin a chain of events that will have a devastating impact on them, their families and our communities across the Mon Valley.”

Legislators said they want to better communication and collaboration from U.S. Steel. Several expressed disappointment that it took two weeks between the fire on Dec. 24 and a notice from the Allegheny County Health Department on Jan. 9 letting the public know about air quality concerns. Lawmakers themselves were in the dark.

U.S. Steel representatives did notify the health department the day of the fire, but health officials say it wasn’t clear how the incident was affecting air quality until days later.

“I’ll take the responsibility,” U.S. Steel director of governmental affairs and public policy Chris Masciantonio told the legislators. “I should be notifying each of you, and we’ll set up a system in the future to do that.”

Pittsburgh Public Theater Presents THE TEMPEST      Cache   Translate Page

In her directorial debut here, Marya Sea Kaminski surprises with her magical and moving take on Shakespeare's classic. Starring Tamara Tunie as Prospero.

Pittsburgh Public Theater is thrilled to begin 2019 with Marya Sea Kaminski's new adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Tempest. The play also marks Marya's directorial debut at The Public, where she has been Artistic Director since August. Starring acclaimed actress Tamara Tunie as Prospero and a company of women, The Tempest runs January 24 - February 24, 2019 at the O'Reilly Theater, Pittsburgh Public Theater's home in the heart of Downtown's Cultural District. For tickets call 412.316.1600, go to ppt.org, or visit the Box Office. The Tempest is Presented by PNC.

The Tempest begins in silence in a patient's room on the surgical oncology floor of a Pittsburgh hospital. In the bed is Prospero (Tamara Tunie), who is battling late-stage breast cancer. In Shakespeare's play Prospero is enraged because his brother and the king stole his dukedom. In Marya's version, the betrayal Prospero suffers is her family's abandonment during her illness. As Prospero begins to dream, both she and the audience are transported to a magical island where Shakespeare's story unfolds, but now with a new resonance.

After an incredible winter storm, we meet the residents of the island. Prospero's daughter Miranda (Kerry Warren), the sprite Ariel (Janelle Velasquez), the enslaved creature Caliban (Shammen McCune), and nymphs Ceres and Iris (Julia de Avilez Rocha and Emma Mercier). Shipwrecked during the storm are Prospero's deceptive sister Tonio (Rami Margron), Queen Alonso (Deena Aziz), her child Ferdinand (Rad Pereira), Alonso's sister Sebastian (Aryana Sedarati), and advisor Gonzalo (Laurie Klatscher). Also on board are the jester Trinculo (Jamie Agnello) and the clownish cook Stefano (Bethany Caputo). Members of the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus will sing and play the spirits of the island.

In addition to Marya's surprising story line, a lot happens on the island of The Tempest, much of it hilarious physical comedy and magic. But for Marya, Prospero's spiritual journey from betrayal to forgiveness is the heart of the play. Audiences will find it remarkable how well these feelings transpose from an exiled duke to a contemporary woman coming to terms with her fate. "These stories are not old and dusty," Marya says. "They are living."

The design team for The Tempest is L.B. Morse (Scenic and Projections), Nephelie Andonyadis (Costumes), Nicole Pearce (Lighting), and Andre Pluess (Sound and Original Music). Erika Chong Shuch is the Choreographer, Pamela Brusoski is the Production Stage Manager, and Phill Madore is the Assistant Stage Manager. Casting is by Pat McCorkle. Brandon J. Simmons is the Assistant Director.

From Ian:

Bret Stephens: The Progressive Assault on Israel
To say, as progressives sometimes do, that Jews are “colonizers” in Israel is anti-Semitic because it advances the lie that there is no ancestral or historic Jewish tie to the land. To claim that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, when manifestly it is not, is anti-Semitic because it’s an attempt to Nazify the Jewish state. To insist that the only state in the world that has forfeited the moral right to exist just happens to be the Jewish state is anti-Semitic, too: Are Israel’s purported crimes really worse than those of, say, Zimbabwe or China, whose rights to exist are never called into question?

But the most toxic assumption is that Jews, whether in Israel or the U.S., can never really be thought of as victims or even as a minority because they are white, wealthy, powerful and “privileged.” This relies on a simplistic concept of power that collapses on a moment’s inspection.

Jews in Germany were economically and even politically powerful in the 1920s. And then they were in Buchenwald. Israel appears powerful vis-à-vis the Palestinians, but considerably less so in the context of a broader Middle East saturated with genocidal anti-Semitism. American Jews are comparatively wealthy. But wealth without political power, as Hannah Arendt understood, is a recipe for hatred. The Jews of the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh are almost surely “privileged” according to various socio-economic measures. But privilege didn’t save the congregants of the Tree of Life synagogue last year.

Nor can the racial politics of the United States or any other country be projected onto the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as some have desperately sought to do. Nearly half of all Jewish Israelis have Middle Eastern roots; some, in fact, are black. Martin Luther King Jr. preached nonviolent resistance; Yasir Arafat practiced terrorism. The civil rights movement was about getting America to live up its founding ideals; anti-Zionism is about destroying Israel’s founding ideals.

As for the oft-cited apartheid analogy, black South Africans did not have a place in the old regime’s Parliament, as Israeli Arabs have in the Knesset; nor were they admitted to white universities, as Israeli Arabs are to Israeli universities. Israel can do more to advance the rights of its Arab citizens (just as the United States, France, Britain and other countries can for their own minorities). And Israel can also do more to ease the lives of Palestinians who are not citizens. But the comparison of Israel to apartheid South Africa is unfair to the former and an insult to the victims of the latter. (h/t Elder of Lobby)
Khaled Abu Toameh: Why Palestinians Oppose an Anti-Iran Coalition
Osama Qawassmeh, a spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's ruling Fatah faction, also lashed out at Iran:

"Iran has not provided anything for the Palestinian people. It is shameful that some think that the economic crisis in Iran is because of its support for the Palestinians. We never heard that Iran helped build a school or hospital or university or any other developmental project."

Iran's support for Hamas and Islamic Jihad, he explained, does not mean that it supports the Palestinian people. "This is a huge misconception and mistake," he said.

In addition, Abbas loyalists have accused Iran of supporting Hamas's violent takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2007. One official claimed that the Hamas terrorists who staged a coup against the Palestinian Authority back then had received military training in Iran and "some Arab countries."

Another sign that the Arab countries have turned their backs on the Palestinians was provided by the recent convening of Arab foreign ministers in Jordan to build a consensus among Arab states on regional security issues. The Palestinians were not invited.

The Palestinian Authority in the West Bank city of Ramallah should ask itself why is everyone disparaging the Palestinian cause," said Palestinian political analyst Fayez Abu Shamaleh. "Why is the Palestinian cause no longer at the center of the attention of Arabs and Jews? Even the candidates running in the Israeli election have ignored the Palestinian issue."

The Palestinian fears do not seem unjustified. Several Arab countries appear completely fed up with the Palestinians, particularly the continued bickering between Fatah and Hamas. Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other Arab countries have tried in the past decade to help the two rival parties resolve their differences, to no avail. Egyptian intelligence officials have devoted years trying to convince Hamas and Fatah to work together for the benefit of the Palestinians.

Instead of doing so, however, Palestinian leaders are preoccupied with blocking Arab participation in a conference that could see the creation of a coalition against Iran -- the same country that Abbas and his loyalists hold responsible for the ongoing divisions among the Palestinians. Might it be possible that the Arab countries are finally rousing themselves from their long slumber and beginning to seek better lives for themselves and their neighbors?
Michael Lumish: "Palestinians" and BDS
Note the use of "Palestinian" in quotes by the creator of the image below.

The reason for this is because he understands that the Arabs who live in the Land of Israel -- which is to say, the land of the Jewish people -- only came into recognizable existence around the time that Paul McCartney was writing "Yesterday."

The people who we call "Palestinians" come from throughout the entire Arab world and that world is a world of conquest by Arabs against non-Arabs. This is not a matter of debate. It is a matter of fact.

It is a matter of known historical knowledge.

Were Israel to be the twenty-third Arab-Muslim state, rather than the lone, sole Jewish state, it would be hailed as the most enlightened country throughout the Middle East. It is only hated by Arabs and their western-left allies because it is the single Jewish state.

Thus, many of us who favor the ongoing well-being of the Jewish people in an entirely hostile world often put the word "Palestinian" in quotes.

Bernie Sanders Has His Own Ben Rhodes
A master's degree in creative writing, followed by a stint writing reports and speeches for an ex-congressman heading a think tank, is generally considered inadequate experience to then serve as the president's deputy national security adviser. Yet that is the path that Ben Rhodes walked to become who writer David Samuels once described as "the single most influential voice shaping American foreign policy," aside from Barack Obama. Perhaps it is because of that unconventional route that Rhodes developed visceral contempt for the foreign-policy establishment, which he called "the Blob" and whose ideas he sought to buck—primarily because of the chaotic landscape in the Middle East and, relatedly, an obsessive disgust with the Iraq War.

As Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), who is expected to announce a 2020 presidential run, makes foreign policy one of his principal focuses, in part to counter critics who considered him ignorant of international issues during the 2016 campaign, he has acquired his own Ben Rhodes. Weeks after Donald Trump was elected president, Sanders hired Matt Duss as his foreign-policy adviser. It is no coincidence that, since then, Sanders has been more vocal about foreign affairs, articulating a progressive vision for America's role in the world.

Duss also shares Rhodes's deep contempt for the so-called Blob, as Klion's title suggests. Most notably, while working at the Center for American Progress, or CAP, from 2008 to 2014, Duss waged a campaign against the pro-Israel community in Washington. He called out the Washington Free Beacon among other media outlets and organizations that were critical of his misleading and outrageous claims about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

That brings us to the policy positions that Duss and Rhodes share: disgust with the Iraq War, support for the Iran nuclear deal and an American tilt toward the Islamic Republic, deep hostility toward Israel—in Duss's case bordering on anti-Semitism because of his fallacious demonization of the Jewish state—and Saudi Arabia, and a general aversion to deploying American soldiers abroad, among others.

"Rhodes … is the most obvious example of the kind of role that Duss might be expected to play in a Sanders administration," Klion writes.

But as far to the left as Rhodes is, Duss is further out there, a true believer who drank every drop of the progressive Kool Aid. Duss "does identify as a man of the left," Klion notes, "a strong social democrat perfectly at home with Sanders's political program."
GOP leader promises ‘action’ against Democrats accused of anti-Semitism
The Republican leader in the US House of Representatives said he would take action against two Democrats who have sharply criticized Israel if the Democratic majority did not do so.

“If they do not take action I think you’ll see action from myself,” Kevin McCarthy of California, the minority leader, said according to Capitol Hill reporters writing for a number of newspapers. “This cannot sustain itself. It’s unacceptable in this country.”

McCarthy noted that he had recently taken action to isolate Republican Representative Steve King of Iowa, who has long associated with white supremacists. The precipitating event for McCarthy was when King wondered in an interview why terms like “white supremacy” were stigmatized.

Statements by freshmen Democrats Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota were equal to King’s and “more so,” McCarthy said. He did not say what action he might initiate against them.

It’s not clear what statements McCarthy particularly found offensive, but both lawmakers embrace the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement targeting Israel, and both have been accused of tweets that cross the line to anti-Semitism: Tlaib in January when she appeared to accuse senators of dual loyalty for advancing a bill that would protect states penalizing commercial Israel boycotts; and Omar in 2012 when she said Israel was “hypnotizing” the world. Omar has in recent days apologized multiple times for that tweet.

Palestinians Reject Invitation to Attend US Mideast Meeting in Poland
Palestinian officials have been invited to a US conference on the Middle East hosted by Poland next week, a senior American official said on Friday, but top Palestinian officials said they would not attend.

The senior administration official told reporters White House senior adviser Jared Kushner would discuss plans for peace between the Palestinians and Israelis at the event.

Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas has called on the US to reverse its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel‘s capital and cuts in aid to the Palestinians, saying these had undermined efforts to reach a two-state solution to the longstanding conflict.

“As noted we have asked the Palestinian Authority to send representatives to this event,” the US official said.

Kushner, who is US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, “will discuss the administration’s efforts to advance peace between Israel and the Palestinians and also take questions from the audience,” the official noted.

“We would very much welcome the Palestinian Authority’s perspectives during the discussion, but I do want to emphasize this is not a negotiation but a discussion, and we look forward to fostering a constructive conversation in Warsaw,” he added.

Chief PA negotiator Saeb Erekat quickly rejected the invitation, writing on Twitter: “Regarding statements that we have been invited, we can say that only today there was some contact from the Polish side.

“Our position remains clear: We are not going to attend this conference and reiterate that we have not mandated anyone to talk on behalf of Palestine.”
Palestinian Authority calls on Arabs to boycott U.S. conference in Warsaw
PLO Secretary-General Saeb Erekat said in response to the US invitation that the Warsaw conference “is an attempt at bypassing the Arab Peace Initiative and destroying the Palestinian national project.” Erekat said the Palestinians will not attend the conference and have “not mandated anyone to talk on behalf of Palestine.”

Another PA official, Hussein al-Sheikh, also rejected the invitation, and said the PLO was the only party mandated to represent or talk on behalf of the Palestinians. Fatah spokesman Osama Qawassmeh warned that any Palestinian or Arab who accepts Trump’s “deal of the century” would be accused of betraying Jerusalem and Islamic and Christian holy sites. He too emphasized that the PLO was the only party which has the authority to speak on behalf of the Palestinians.

The PA, which has been boycotting the Trump administration since December 2017, has expressed fear that the Warsaw conference’s main goal would be to promote normalization between Israel and some Arab countries.

In the past two weeks, several PA officials have called on the Arab countries to boycott the upcoming conference and to remain committed to the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, which calls for normalizing ties between Israel and the Arab countries only after a full Israeli withdrawal to the pre-1967 lines.

Qawassmeh warned on Saturday that any Arab leader who meets with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Warsaw conference would be “stabbing Jerusalem and our Palestinian people.” The Palestinians, he added, are opposed to any form of normalization “with the Israeli occupation entity because that would be a free gift to Tel Aviv.”
Foreign Ministry said to see little chance of breakthrough in Israeli-Saudi ties
Saudi Arabia will not normalize ties with Israel or support the Trump administration’s peace plan without significant Israeli concessions to the Palestinians, according to a classified Foreign Ministry document reported by Israeli television Friday.

Israel in recent years has worked to improve ties with Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, which, despite having no diplomatic relations with Jerusalem, share a common foe in Iran.

Though Saudi Arabia has stated it will not establish ties with Jerusalem in the absence of a Palestinian state, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said improved relations with the Arab world could better the chances of reaching a peace agreement with the Palestinians.

Citing an unnamed Foreign Ministry official familiar with the document, Channel 13 news reported that the memo, drawn up in mid-December, contradicts Netanyahu’s position, arguing the chances of such an “inside-out” formula resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict were remote.
Palestinians Approach UN Seeking ‘Top Billing’ in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (satire)
A delegation representing the Palestinian Authority has appeared before UN leadership requesting the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict to be renamed. As PA representative Mahmoud Said told the UN, “For too long, we’ve been told that we don’t deserve top billing in this conflict. For too long, our children have grown up in a world where they are billed second to the Zionists. Don’t they deserve to live in a world where their biggest problem is the ‘Palestinian-Israeli Conflict?’”

According to Said, the request has less to do with the Palestinian or Israeli contributions to the decades-old conflict, and more with the self esteem of the Palestinian people. “Our children are already told they are second-class citizens, why should they also be branded as coming second in the name of the struggle with Israel when we’re equal shareholders?”

Israel has also sent a delegation to the UN with the expressed goal of retaining top billing. “We’ve worked hard to establish ourselves as the leading name in this ongoing war. We won’t sit idly by and let the Palestinians use bureaucratic trickery to ruin all that we’ve worked for,” commented Israeli Government representative Avigdor Benrimon. “‘Palestinian-Israeli Conflict’ just doesn’t have the same ring to it, why should anyone care about a conflict without a snappy name? The Balochistan Conflict has been going on as long as ours, but no one’s ever heard of them. You know why? The name is terrible. They should fire whatever PR person thought of it.”
Praising Hezbollah, Russian envoy claims US could spark new Israel-Lebanon war
Russia’s ambassador in Beirut said US policies toward Iran could set off a fresh war between Israel and Lebanon, while championing the country’s Iranian-backed Hezbollah terror group.

Though he said renewed fighting between the sides remained uncertain, Alexander Zasypkin accused the United States of inciting “new conflicts” that he said could draw in countries and actors throughout the Middle East.

“As for a conflict between Israel and Lebanon, nothing can be predicted with certainty because the region is at a crossroads. Peoples are demanding the settlement of existing crises, the return to a peaceful life, the development of cooperation,” Zasypkin told the state-owned Sputnik news agency in an interview published Saturday.

“A negative alternative to this is the incitement of new conflicts by the Americans, which could involve many countries as well as ethnic and religious forces,” he added.

Zaspykin also claimed the US stance toward Iran and Hezbollah was further destabilizing the region.
Suspect in the murder of Ori Ansbacher arrested near Ramallah
IDF and police forces have arrested a Palestinian suspected in committing the brutal murder of 19-year-old Ori Ansbacher, according to the police spokesperson's unit.

The suspect was been arrested near Ramallah, and was reported to be living in Hebron.

"The joint investigation of the Israel Police and the General Security Service led the Border Police unit of the Border Police, the Shin Bet security forces and the IDF to carry out operations in Ramallah, in the framework of which a suspect was arrested in the murder of Ori Ansbacher in Jerusalem," the Border Police spokesperson said in a released statement.

"From the moment that the body of Ori Ansbacher, 19, was found in the Ein Yael area of Jerusalem, a joint investigation team of the Israel Police and the General Security Service to work together to locate every piece of information and evidence that could lead to the identity of the suspect."

"The suspect was arrested in Ramallah, and the suspect, a resident of Hebron, was interrogated by the GSS. There is a gag order on every detail of the investigation, except for what is written in this notice," the statement concluded. (h/t Elder of Lobby)
Police: Forensics at scene led to Palestinian suspect in murder of Israeli teen
Israeli police investigating the brutal murder of Israeli teen Ori Ansbacher in Jerusalem said on Saturday that forensic evidence unearthed at the scene of the crime led forces to the arrest of a Palestinian suspect Friday night.

Ansbacher, 19, was found dead in the woods at Ein Yael in south Jerusalem late Thursday, with what police said were “signs of violence,” after she was reported missing earlier in the day.

Israeli security forces arrested the Palestinian suspect in Ramallah late Friday for the murder of Ansbacher, who Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said was killed with “shocking brutality,” and police sources were quoted as saying had been stabbed multiple times in the upper torso.

Police said the forensic evidence at the scene tied the suspect to the murder “without question” and that there would be no need for a confession, according to a Channel 13 report Saturday. The arrest of the suspect was “very quiet,” the police added.

Ansbacher’s family was notified of the arrest over the course of Saturday.

The suspect, a Palestinian resident of Hebron, was taken for questioning by the Shin Bet security services after a raid in the West Bank’s Ramallah/el-Bireh area on Friday night.

According to PA news outlet Wafa, IDF troops searched two residential buildings and the Jamal Abdel-Nasser Mosque, where a 30-year-old employee was arrested. The report said the Israeli troops confiscated security camera footage from the neighborhood, as well as from the mosque.

The raid sparked clashes with some local residents, who hurled rocks at the troops. The Palestinian Red Crescent said two Palestinians were treated for light injuries at hospitals in Ramallah.
Danon to UNSC President: Condemn PA's terror in light of Ansbacher's death
"Condemn the barbaric murder and act firmly against the PA's culture of terror" Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon demanded of the UN Security Council President on Friday.

Following the brutal murder of 19-year-old Ori Ansbacher, whose body was found in Ein Yael in Jerusalem on Thursday, Danon called for an urgent meeting with Anatolio Ndong Mba, the Equatorial Guinea ambassador to the United Nations, currently serving as the president of the Security Council, and demanded that the Council publicly condemn the terrorist attack in Jerusalem.

"The Security Council's silence will not help in this fight against terrorism, and will only allow the waves of hatred to grow unchecked," said Danon, adding that "while this silence continues, the PA maintains its policy of paying salaries for terrorists and educating its youth with incitement, and a 19-year-old girl was brutally murdered in Israel.

"The Security Council has the responsibility and moral duty to make a clear condemnation of this barbaric murder and to act firmly against the culture of terror in the Palestinian Authority, the very culture that undermines stability in the region and destroys innocent lives," Danon concluded.
Police urge public to stop spreading ‘horrific’ rumors about Jerusalem murder
Police on Friday urged the public to stop spreading “horrific” and baseless rumors on social media surrounding the murder of a teenager whose body was discovered on the outskirts of Jerusalem.

Ori Ansbacher, a 19-year-old from the West Bank settlement of Tekoa, was found dead Thursday with what police said were “signs of violence” after she was reported missing earlier in the day. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Ansbacher had been killed with “shocking brutality,” and police sources were quoted saying she had been stabbed multiple times in the upper torso.

“Since the murder that took place yesterday, there have been different publications and reports, especially on social media, regarding the circumstances of the case, including horrific descriptions that are irresponsible,” police said in a rare statement.

“We are clarifying that these publications are baseless and hurt the honor of the victim and her family while misleading the public,” police added.

Police stressed they were doing everything in their power to track the perpetrator(s).

“We call on the public not to spread false rumors or disinformation from unauthorized sources,” police said.
IDF Troops Face Off Against 8,000 Palestinian Rioters in Latest Gaza Border Unrest
IDF troops faced off against around 8,000 Palestinian rioters on the Israel-Gaza Strip border on Friday, as weekly Hamas-orchestrated unrest continued.

According to Palestinian health officials, two rioters died in the latest clashes.

The Israeli military said it had opened fire in response to explosives and rocks hurled at the border fence.

More than 220 Gazans have been killed in border violence since last March.

Last July, an IDF soldier was shot dead by a sniper on the frontier with the Hamas-ruled coastal enclave.

An Israeli military spokesperson said soldiers on Friday used riot dispersal equipment and opened fired “in accordance with standard operating procedures.”

The IDF tweeted about Friday’s events, “What prevented 8,000 violent rioters in Gaza from infiltrating into Israel? Some barbed wire & brave IDF soldiers. As rioters threw grenades + explosives into Israel today, our troops stood guard, ensuring innocent Israelis living minutes away stayed safe.”

Hezbollah terror chief chides Israelis for not recycling, in mock ad campaign
An Israeli recycling company has chosen an unlikely star for its environmental ad campaign, Hezbollah terror group chief Hassan Nasrallah.

The terror leader’s face appeared on a towering billboard on the Ayalon Highway in Tel Aviv Wednesday and in a video put out by the ELA Recycling Corporation, encouraging Israelis to recycle plastic bottles.

In the ad, an animated Nasrallah says “I don’t recycle bottles,” with text stating that he has been stuck in a bunker for 12 years, and asking Israelis, “What’s your excuse?”

In the mock video, Nasrallah is speaking Arabic, accompanied by Hebrew subtitles. He introduces himself as a “Youtuber” and public figure.

“Let’s talk for a second about our shared future, Israel. I haven’t recycled in 12 years, but what about you? What am I investing in tunnels for?” he says.

“If only I could leave [my bunker] to recycle bottles,” he laments.

The ELA Recycling Corporation is a nonprofit promoting recycling in Israel.

BDS's binding ties with terrorists
The ugly face of the anti-Israel BDS movement just got uglier. Or, to put it another way, a study of the Boycott, Sanctions and Divestment movement removed its mask to reveal some very nasty characters.

According to an 80-page report published this week by the Strategic Affairs Ministry, there are more than 100 different connections linking terrorists groups to organizations that promote anti-Israel boycotts, including “the employment of 30 current and ‘retired’ terror operatives.”

The report sports the catchy title “Terrorists in Suits,” and, as I suspected, beyond BDS’s useful idiots – Roger Waters and his ilk – lies an even darker layer of BDS-ers who are terrorists all dressed up. Connecting the dots, you can trace a line from “terrorists in suits” to terrorists in suicide vests. The lines crisscross through organizations professing to deal in human rights, spreading across continents.

This goes way beyond attempts to shoot down Tel Aviv as the host of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. This is about shooting down Israel, period.

As Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan put it: “Terrorist groups and the anti-Israel boycott campaign have united in their goal of wiping Israel off the map. Terrorist groups view boycotts as a complementary tactic to terror attacks.”

The report shows how Hamas and the PFLP (the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) have ties to at least 13 anti-Israel NGOs. This includes 20 members now occupying senior positions in NGOs who have previously sat in jail, some for murder. The report “shows how boycott organizations and terrorist designated organizations raise finances together, share the same personnel, and showcases that contrary to popular belief, these officials have not abandoned their support for terrorism, but instead, continue to maintain organizational, financial and active ties with terrorist groups.”

Follow the money trail and you’ll find the BDS organizations have received millions of euros in funding from European countries and philanthropic foundations, in addition to funds raised through crowdfunding, banks and other means.

Search for the femme fatale and you’ll find Leila Khaled, one of the stars of the study.
BBC World Affairs editor misleads on women’s rights in Iran
In contrast, here is an excerpt from an article by the BBC’s world affairs editor John Simpson which appeared in the ‘features’ section of BBC News website’s Middle East page on February 1st under the title “The plane journey that set Iran’s revolution in motion”.

“Today, Iran is a lot more easy-going than most outsiders imagine.

The rules about women’s dress are sometimes enforced harshly, but the Islamic Republic has never clamped down on women’s rights in the way you see routinely in Saudi Arabia.

Iranian women run businesses, own property, drive cars and play an important part in politics.

The present government is probably more liberal than any other since the revolution.”

The World Economic Forum publishes an annual ‘Global Gender Gap Report’ which ranks countries in terms of women’s economic participation, educational attainment, health, and political empowerment. The 2018 report put Iran in slot 142 out of 149, with Saudi Arabia one place higher. Despite Simpson’s claim that “Iranian women…play an important part in politics”, the WEF’s sub-index on political empowerment ranks Iran 141 out of 149. Saudi Arabia is ranked 127th.
BBC ignores developments in story it reported in 2014
BBC audiences have not seen any follow-up reporting on that story despite the fact that following a 2015 change in government policy, 1,300 Falash Mura immigrated to Israel in 2017. In October 2018 the Israeli cabinet authorised a plan to bring a further 1,000 members of the community to Israel and the first group arrived this week.

“The first 83 immigrants from Ethiopia, out of a total of some 1,000 approved last year for entry into Israel, arrived at Ben-Gurion Airport on Monday night after waiting in Gondar for an average of 15 years.

In October, the government approved for immigration 1,000 members of the Falash Mura community in Ethiopia who have children currently living in Israel. […]

The immigrants were welcomed by Jewish Agency Chairman Isaac Herzog and Aliyah and Integration Minister Yoav Galant, as well as by several well-wishers, including a delegation from the Jewish Federation of Chicago.”

The BBC has to date not found those developments in the story it reported in 2014 worth covering.
Texas museum stands by ownership of painting; Jewish family claims it’s looted
A Houston museum said Friday it “stands by its ownership” of a painting on loan to an exhibition in Germany which is being claimed as Nazi-looted art.

Henri Edmond Cross’ “Regatta in Venice” was loaned by Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts for a show on the French artist at the Barberini Museum in Potsdam, just outside Berlin. Heirs of Jewish French collector Gaston Levy say it was stolen from their family by the Nazis and have filed a legal request for its return.

The Texas museum said it made a legal filing in Potsdam on Thursday. It said in a statement that “based on the facts of the provenance research, the museum stands by its ownership of ‘Regatta in Venice.'”

It said in its filing that no proof has been presented that the plaintiffs are Levy’s rightful heirs, and that Levy didn’t claim compensation for the piece in 1956 when he filed claims for other pieces in his collection, among them other pieces by Cross.

A lawyer for the heirs, Christoph Partsch, said last week that the painting was confiscated by the Nazis in 1940. He said his clients had found out only now about the existence of the missing painting and were demanding its return. He said the family lives in Europe, but didn’t want to further identify them.
21 iconic Israeli movies that you must watch
A melting pot of many different peoples, Israeli culture can be hard to grasp fully through anything but movies.

From classics films that paint a picture of what life was like for Jewish immigrants in the 1950s and ’60s, to portraits of communities often left out of the mainstream, movies let you immerse yourself in Israeli life, if only for a short while.

This list has it all: film series immortalized in Israeli pop culture; cult comedies; wartime movies; films about religious Jews, Soviet immigrants, and Bedouin tribes; and Israeli films that have received international acclaim.

Watch and enjoy as you learn a little bit more about the complicated society that is Israel. We’ve included websites where you can find the movie with English subtitles.
Spray painting a pro-Israeli message with Artists 4 Israel
Graffiti artists are disgusted by the antisemitic and racist graffiti springing up across college and university campuses in the United States, and have formed a rapid response team to combat the problem through art.

Despite the recent surge in BDS efforts, Artists 4 Israel (A4I) has grown exponentially over the last 10 years showing that Israel’s support of the arts and free speech is recognized and having a significant impact. Artists 4 Israel now represents more than 8,000 artists from 26 different countries who are united to overcome bigotry against Israel, the Jews or any other persecuted group. The recent rash of scrawled hate speech and depictions of swastikas is particularly upsetting to urban artists.

“Hate has no place in graffiti and I refuse to let anyone disrespect my chosen art form for such terrible purposes” says Shayne Tuthill, an artist who joined A4I on a mission painting memorials to slain IDF soldiers in Israel. Shayne and others under the coordination of Artists 4 Israel have offered to reclaim the name of street art and defend against the bigots and vandals.

Swastikas and other hateful symbols have been found most recently on the American Federation of Teachers building. This follows incidents at Columbia University, Duke University, Goucher, Cornell, Pomona, UC Davis and far too many other colleges and universities.

Graffiti and street art can and should unite people and beautify communities. Since its inception, Artists 4 Israel has found that to be a core value of most graffiti artists. Originally focusing only on advocacy initiatives in New York City, it was the artists themselves who suggested traveling to Israel to paint over the bomb shelters in Sderot. There, artists from around the world gathered to heroically dodge rockets and defy a war to create murals across the city. When finished, bomb shelters, those distressing reminders of danger, were transformed into an outdoor art gallery that soothed the populace and has become a tourist site that lasts to this day. The artists received the Key to the City of Sderot for their efforts as well as thousands of hugs, kisses and heartfelt thanks from the local community.
How a curious love triangle spurred UK’s cabinet to pass the Balfour Declaration
There was only one Jewish member among the British Cabinet when it debated Chaim Weizmann’s request that it back the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine during the summer and autumn of 1917.

But Edwin Montagu, who was born 140 years ago this month, was not, as might have been expected, the strongest advocate of what soon became known as the Balfour Declaration. Actually, he was its most bitter adversary.

He railed against the “mischievous political creed” of Zionism, attacked the very notion that Jews were a nation, and ridiculed the idea that, in such a state, Jews “drawn from all quarters of the globe” would even be capable of communicating with one another.

In an angry memo to his fellow Cabinet members in August 1917 he went so far as to declare that the proposal before the government would be “anti-Semitic in result [and] will prove a rallying ground for anti-Semites in every country in the world.”

As the historian Jonathan Schneer wrote: “Ironically, a Jew represented the greatest remaining obstacle to Cabinet acceptance of the Balfour Declaration.”

Inadvertently, however, Montagu would play a possibly critical part in the realization of the Zionists’ dreams. That role had nothing to do with high politics or great principles. Rather, it resulted from the fallout of a bizarre love affair involving Montagu’s political mentor, prime minister Henry Herbert Asquith, and his future wife, Venetia Stanley.

We have lots of ideas, but we need more resources to be even more effective. Please donate today to help get the message out and to help defend Israel.
NC State Pushes Past Pitt, 79-76      Cache   Translate Page
On a day in which the Pittsburgh Panthers (12-12, 2-9) tried to get another notch in the win column, they couldn’t get out of their own way early in the game. Despite an early 6-5 lead, Pitt turned the ball over on their next three possessions which allowed the North Carolina State Wolfpack (17-7, 5-6) to go on a 5-0 run. NC State looked to get some separation early until guard Jared Wilson-Frame drilled a step back three-pointer. Forward Terrell Brown followed that up by connecting on his second three-pointer of the season to tied the game at 14 all going into the under-12 media timeout.
'Thank U' Text: Ariana Grande's Collaborators Break Down The Artist's Latest Album       Cache   Translate Page

Ariana Grande has gone through a lot in the past year and half. From dropping her charting-topping fourth album, sweetener, to dealing with public breakups and deaths, the 25-year-old star has remained open with her fans while processing these highs and lows. And throughout the processing, she never stopped making music.

Knowing painfully well the meaning of love and loss, Grande retreated to her designated places of solace in the second half of 2018: studio booths, the arms of her friends and even some champagne-aided visits to Tiffany & Co. It was in these moments of retreat that Grande channeled grief and confusion into music. Now, in the wake of some chaotic life changes, Grande has released her fifth studio album (and second album in less than a year), thank u, next.

On the 12-track project, Grande wades through a mixed bag of emotions and braces herself for hard-learned truths. "7 rings," the album's second official single, dissects retail therapy as a substitute for actually facing unresolved feelings. "ghostin" addresses mourning the death of ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller while trying to hold on to her relationship with ex-fiancé, Pete Davidson. "fake smile" deals with the balancing act of appearing stable for the sake of others.

With a diverse collection of tracks, the album is a reflection of not only Grande's state of mind, but also of the people who flocked to support her during her hardships. From its conception to its arrival, a central narrative of thank u, next has been the collaborative spirit that seems to underpin the new music.

The team of creatives who worked on thank u, next — from producers who have worked with Grande throughout her career to the talented group of girlfriends who co-wrote "7 rings" and "thank u, next" — are as vital to the record as the stories being told on it.

Three of Grande's collaborators, producer Tommy Brown, songwriter Justin Tranter and singer-songwriter Njomza, spoke to NPR Music about their experiences working on thank u, next and their respective relationships with Grande, an artist determined to evolve in real time.

The dynamic of the studio sessions:

Tommy Brown: A lot of the songs on the album, like, they're clever, but they are very 'Say what you mean, mean what you say,' you know? So, [Ariana] was very deliberate. She was like, "OK, let's take two weeks and go into a room everyday and create." We recorded all our songs in two weeks.

We had a whiteboard in the room and every time she would have an idea, she would go up and write it on the whiteboard. Ideas just came pouring out of her. I was like, "She's really feeling something."

Njomza: Me and Mac were really close. He was one of my best friends. So [Ariana and I] were just around each other all the time because of him. ... So after Mac passed, she was really hurt. I was really hurt. And I think it kind of brought us together a little bit closer because of what we were going through. We could understand each other. She surrounded herself with people who could understand.

The songs were written really, really fast. From [September to October], it was almost like a song a day. ... Ideas were just getting shouted out and people were just like adding on with other stuff. It's really cool. It was a lot of really amazing, boss, female energy.

I loved stepping into her world. I loved hearing her story and turning it into songs, that was honestly my favorite part.

Justin Tranter: It was it's so inspiring to me to see how in charge and how involved she is every step of the way, from the writing to the vision to the storytelling and to even engineering and compiling her own vocals.

It was just so cool to see Ariana just being the captain of this ship of all these publicly talented people. You see this young superstar 100 percent leading the way, 100 percent knowing exactly what she wants to say, knowing what she wants it to sound like. When you see any creative person in that element, you know that they're nailing it, you know that they've found their vision and their story and they're executing, it's just such a cool thing to witness.

The story behind "7 rings"...:

Njomza: One morning, [Ariana] was like, "Do you want to go to Tiffany's? And I was like, "OK, sure." Me, her and her friend Courtney. And we went and they were like literally feeding us champagne, like it was their job to feed us champagne. We got turnt up on accident and then she was like, "You know what? I want to buy everybody a gift for working on the album."

It was a very important time for her. She felt comfortable with all of us. She wanted to gift everybody, which I thought was like one of the nicest things of all time. Also, one of the craziest things! Just buying, like, seven diamond rings.

We got back in the car on the way to the studio and I literally looked at her and I was like, "You have to make a song about this. Like we have to make a song about how you just like literally spent that crazy amount of money at frickin' Tiffany's in a morning." It was like 10 or 11 a.m.

I feel like a lot of people wouldn't expect her to come out on a song and own the fact that she's this rich boss, you know, and she rapped on it. Literally, it was such an out of the ordinary kind of record for her.

... and the controversy surrounding it:

Njomza: There's always going to be an issue with something, no matter what the whole situation is. I feel someone's gonna find something wrong with something. And I'm just gonna leave that at that.

I know I like it but I don't really remember that day, we were drunk. ... I don't really remember who exactly brought that flow on. But I mean, once the flow was there, nobody was mad at it.

The inspiration for "fake smile":

Tranter: It all happened in one day; the writing had all happened in one day and in one session. It was one of Ariana's favorite tracks that [Andrew 'Pop' Wansel] had made and it had that great sample in it ["After Laughter Comes Tears" by Wendy Rene.]

We just kind of started talking about stuff in our lives and the song just kind of fell out. And then once it was done, she immediately cut a vocal because she was so excited about what we had all written together.

It's for sure emotional and for sure honest as f*** and really heartfelt, but at the same time, the track bangs. The sample definitely inspired that heartfelt tone — that '60s kind of heartbreak.

The turning point for Grande:

Brown: It's different than all her other albums because fans can now listen to her story. So much has happened in her life and she's just being open and specific about it. I think other artists are afraid to do that.

Njomza: We were all helping each other. She was going through a lot at that time, so we were all just trying to make each other feel better and realizing how powerful it is to be a woman and we wanted to portray that through all this music.

I don't think people have seen this side of her, you know? And I think it's just her being completely transparent and honest.

2/10 Through the 1960’s: Bagby Joins; No Mo' Spitball; Cocky Klinger; HBD Larry, Digger, Country Jake, Cot, Bill & Jim      Cache   Translate Page
    • 1857 - UT Jim Keenan was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He spent 10 years in the show with an 1882 stop with the Alleghenys, hitting .219 as a bench catcher and outfielder (he played every position but 2B during his career). Jim was one of the better catchers of the 1880s, spent mostly with the Cincinnati Red Stockings. He caught barehanded (ouch!) and is also noted as being one of the few players of that rowdy era to kick the booze habit during his playing days. Keenan caught the first Pittsburgh Alleghenys game (by extension, the first game in Pirates franchise history), a 10-9 win over his future mates, the Red Stockings, played on May 2nd, 1882 at Cincinnati's Bank Street Grounds.
    • 1893 - RHP Bill Evans was born in Reidsville, NC. He spent his entire three-year MLB stint with the Bucs (1916-17, 1919) as a fringe hurler, going 2-13 with a 3.85 ERA. Evans went into the military and missed all of the 1918 campaign. He worked seven games for Pittsburgh in 1919, then spent the next decade toiling in the minors.
    Cotton Tierney 1922 American Caramel
    • 1894 - 2B James “Cotton” (because of his light blond hair) Tierney was born in Kansas City, KS. He started his pro career in Pittsburgh (1920-23), mainly as a second baseman but also seeing time in the outfield and at the hot corner. He hit .315 for Pittsburgh and was the main piece in the 1923 trade for P Lee Meadows. Cotton was remembered when in 2005, his great-great-nephew Jeff Euston created the popular website Cot's Baseball Contracts, named after his MLB uncle.
    • 1900 - SS “Country Jake” Stephens was born in Pleasantville (or nearby York), Pennsylvania. Jake played in the Negro leagues for 17 years, with stops with the Homestead Grays (1929-31) and Pittsburgh Crawfords (1932). The SS wasn’t much of a batsman - the curve befuddled him - but he was a fast and acrobatic fielder with a rifle arm. As loaded with bats as the legendary local clubs were, carrying a glove at shortstop was a no-brainer. His leather earned him spots in Pittsburgh and York sports halls of fame.
    • 1920 - The spitball, shineball, and emeryball were outlawed by the AL/NL Joint Rules Committee. Seventeen pitchers, including off-and-on Pirate Burleigh Grimes, were grandfathered so they could continue to toss a wet one. Grimes, who finished his career in 1934 with Pittsburgh, was the last man to legally throw a spitter.
    • 1932 - RHP Billy “Digger” O’Dell was born in Whitmire, South Carolina. He closed out his 13-year career (twice an All-Star) with the Pirates in 1966-67, going 8-8-4/4.44. Digger retired and left baseball, coaching Legion ball and earning a spot in the South Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. He got his nickname from the radio/TV show “The Life of Riley” that featured a character named Digby “Digger” O’Dell - an undertaker.
    Bob Klinger 1941 Double Play
    • 1939 - RHP Bob Klinger exhibited his flipper to Pittsburgh Press beat writer Les Biederman and told him that “You are now looking at the arm that belongs to the fellow who is going to win 20 games...this year.” Klinger had gone 12-5/2.99 in 1938 with a gimpy arm, then underwent off season treatment for neuritis. He did get 33 starts, but finished 14-17/4.36 and 0-1 as a prognosticator. Apparently his arm remained chronically cranky. The Pirates switched him to spot starter/reliever in 1940, and he didn’t rejoin the rotation full-time again until 1943. He was in the Navy from 1944-45, then went to the Boston Red Sox at age 38 and was their closer from 1946-47 as part of the Bosox 1946 World Series club.
    • 1947 - RHP Jim Bagby Jr. was purchased from the Boston Red Sox for a little more than the $10,000 waiver fee. Bagby had been a two-time All-Star for Cleveland in 1942-43, but the 30-year-old was on his last legs in Pittsburgh, going 5-4/4.67 in ‘47 in 38 games (six starts), which proved to be his final season after 10 years in MLB. His father blazed a similar path, ending his big league days as a Bucco in 1923 after a nine-year tour of duty.
    • 1954 - LHP Larry McWilliams was born in Wichita, Kansas. The sixth overall pick of the 1974 draft by the Braves, he worked for the Pirates from 1982-86. Larry had three strong years as a starter, then faded and was shipped back to his original club, the Braves. His line with the Bucs was 43-44-2 with a 3.86 ERA. Per Wikipedia, he was nicknamed Spaghetti by Tony Pena. "That's what I call him. Take a look at his legs. They look like spaghetti...” his battery mate said.

2/10 From 1970: Ramon Deal; Judy HoF; Jason DD; HBD Jeanmar, Duke, Luis, Justin, Cesar & Ruben      Cache   Translate Page
    • 1971 - The Pirates made one of their better deals when they sent minor league lefty Danilo Rivas to the Mexico City Reds for LHP Ramon Hernandez. The southpaw was a bullpen anchor from 1971-76, going 23-12-39 with a 2.51 ERA before being sold to the Red Sox in 1976. The trade was a homecoming of sorts; the Pirates had originally signed Hernandez as an 18-year-old out of Ponce De Leon, Puerto Rico, in 1959.
    Ramon Hernandez 1973 Topps
    • 1975 - 3B Judy Johnson was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Negro League Committee. Playing in the 1920s and 1930s, Johnson was a defensive whiz who batted .309 over a 17-year career, including stints with the Homestead Grays and Pittsburgh Crawfords. He was inducted on August 18th. His nickname came from his first Negro league club, the Hilldale Daisies, because he resembled Chicago American Giants’ player Judy Gans.
    • 1978 - OF Ruben Mateo was born in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic. Mateo was highly touted, but after breaking his leg in 2000 never seemed to regain his edge and became a AAAA player, suiting up for four teams in six MLB campaigns. He made a brief, 19-game stop in Pittsburgh, hitting .242 in 2004 before being sold to the Royals; it would be his last big league stop at the tender age of 26. He spent the next dozen years playing in the minors, Korea, Dominican Republic, Venezuela and mainly in the Mexican League before retiring after the 2015 season.
    • 1980 - SS Cesar Izturis was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. He spent 13 seasons in the big leagues, with a stop in Pittsburgh in 2007. He hit .276 after the Pirates bought his rights from the Cubs in mid-July but was released after the year (Jack Wilson was the #1 guy with Brian Bixler in the pipeline) and signed with St. Louis. He had three strong seasons left in him with the Cards and Orioles before becoming a bench guy in 2011; 2013 would be his last MLB campaign.
    Cesar Izturis 2008 Topps Gold
    • 1980 - Coach Justin Meccage was born in Billings, Montana. After a brief minor league pitching career and a couple of college coaching stops, he was hired by the Bucs as the pitching coach for the Bradenton Marauders (2013-2014), was promoted to Altoona (2015-2016), became the minor league pitching coordinator in 2017 and was named assistant pitching coach as Ray Searage’s right hand man for the big team for 2018.
    • 1984 - SS Luis Cruz was born in Navojoa, Mexico. He was signed as a minor league free agent by Pittsburgh in 2008 and spent most of his two-year stay in the minors, seeing action in 27 games for the Bucs and hitting .214. He did have an auspicious start to his career, smacking a single in his first MLB at-bat off Aaron Harang. Luis played for the Brewers, Dodgers and Yankees before going international in 2014, playing four seasons in Japan before returning home to suit up in the Mexican League this year.
    • 1986 - RHP Duke Welker was born in Kirkland, Washington. A second round pick in the 2007 draft, the 6’7” pitcher was a hot prospect who never panned out. He got into two games with the Bucs in 2013, then was involved in a bizzaro trade. He was sent to the Minnesota Twins as part of the deal that had brought 1B Justin Morneau to Pittsburgh. The two teams changed their minds a few weeks later, and in November, Welker was sent back to the Bucs in return for P Kris Johnson. But fate trumped his return as Duke had TJ surgery in 2014. The Bucs released him, and he was signed and cut by the Giants in 2016.
    Duke Welker 2008 Bowman Prospects
    • 1988 - RHP Jeanmar Gomez was born in Caracas, Venezuela. The long man went 5-2-1 with a 3.28 ERA in 78 outings for Pittsburgh from 2013-14 after coming over from the Indians. Gomez became a free agent in the 2014 off season and signed with the Phillies; this year, he’s with the White Sox.
    •  2001 - C Jason Kendall was honored as the Dapper Dan 2000 Sportsman of the Year. He made rehabbed a gruesome ankle injury and came back to hit .320, score 112 runs and steal 22 bases, then made a long-term commitment to the Pirates by signing a six-year/$60M contract extension. He was the first Pirate to win the award since Jim Leyland in 1990.

Comment on Pimping Le’Veon Bell by Waterboy      Cache   Translate Page
I can't blame Bell for shutting it down in Pittsburgh if they weren't willing to pay him what he felt he deserved. In the real world you're always welcomed to quit your job and go elsewhere if you're not getting paid what you feel you deserve but in sports your locked into a contract and even when you complete your contract term teams still have built in mechanisms to keep you on year to year deals. He played thru a franchise tag last season there was no need to put the extra mileage on his body without any longterm commitments from the team. Now with that said I wouldn't dedicate 16 mil in cap space to a RB. I'd rather have 2 good RB's making 8 mil each rather than 1 great RB making 16 mil.

    • Tinder can be too aggressive for someone fresh out of a 20-year marriage, while Bumble can give an older woman control over her preferences and allow her not be bombarded by messages, women say.
    • Some find apps catered to their age group, like eHarmony and Match, "too old" and others like Happn too "trendy."
    • Despite frustration, many are leaning into the apps, using them as means to meet people and explore their new single lives.

A few weeks ago, my mom came to me with a question: She was becoming increasingly frustrated with dating apps. Were other single women her age feeling that way, too?

What she was searching for was innocent enough: someone who she can have fun with, travel with, and ultimately be in a long-term relationship with. Marriage? No, thank you. Kids? Been there, done that. A one night stand? TMI.

She's over 55, has been married, had kids, owns a home, and has been providing for herself for years. She was no longer looking for someone to take care of her — she was doing a fine job already — but someone to love and be loved by.

She moved to Abu Dhabi in 2015 and was teaching at a university there, when a female colleague two decades younger introduced her to Tinder. It was exciting and unlike any other dating experience she had before.

"What was exciting was I was meeting people I would never meet," she told me over the phone recently. "It is different when you are in a foreign country, you have people from all over the world, and unless you are going out to clubs and bars, it is difficult to meet people."

So, she swiped right. And she swiped right a lot. One man she met she described as a multimillionaire who picked her up in a Jaguar limo and took her to the Dubai opera. Another asked her to be his fourth wife after only a couple of dates. There were lots of late nights out dancing, followed by cozy nights in chatting online, getting to know someone.

At this point, my mom estimates she's been on nearly 50 dates — some with men 20 years younger. And though she didn't join Tinder with specific expectations, something wasn't clicking. After a year of using the app, she deleted it.

"No one I met on the app, none of them, wanted a committed, long-term relationship," she said. "A lot of them are looking for threesomes or just want to have a conversation, but what about me? What am I getting out of that other than having a date once in a while?"

As an older woman, my mom was confronted with a simple fact: she was now living in a society where the most popular way to date catered to younger generations and fully embraced hook-up culture.

So, what's an older lady to do?

This is also a truth Carolina Gonzalez, a writer in London, came face-to-face with after her 28-year marriage ended.

At 57, she downloaded Bumble — Tinder seemed too aggressive, she told me. She's also tried Happn and OkCupid, but quickly trashed them because she didn't find a big enough pool of users in her age range, or found the app to be too trendy. Sites like eHarmony and Match, she said, seemed "a little too old" and hard to "get a full sense of who is available.”

She enjoyed the control Bumble gave her, and the ability to not be bombarded by messages but to make the first move instead. It seemed noncommittal, she said; clean, in fact. The variety, though, "can be scary."

"When you just get out of a long marriage or a long relationship, it is weird to go out with anybody," Gonzalez told me. "Though there is still a hope you will meet someone and fall in love, but I am probably never going to meet someone and have what I had before."

But that, she said, was also liberating. She was free to have 15-minute coffee dates, be vulnerable, and feel sexy. At her age, Gonzalez said, she feels much more confident in who she is — a trait, she said, that younger men find appealing.

My mom said this, too. She frequently matched with men 10 to 15 years younger than her because, she said, she was able to "hold a conversation."

For Gonzalez, dating apps only proved to her that her life wasn't missing anything, except maybe the cherry on top. Bumble lets her go out to the movies and dinner with people and form relationships, even friendships, with men she would have never met before. She's in a place where she is not doing anything she doesn't want to do, and experimenting with dating apps as a way to have fun as a 50-something divorcée. Her life is not shutting down with age, she said, but opening up.

She did, however, see that the options available to her younger girlfriends were much more plentiful. Peaking over their shoulders, she saw her younger friends swiping with much more fervor and not running up against the spinning wheel — an indication the app is searching for more people with your age range and location.

"This is a big business and they are missing out," said Gonzalez, referring to popular dating app companies who don't cater to older people.

Tinder declined to comment when asked to provide its app's age demographics and whether or not it thought its platform catered to older users. Match, eharmony, Happn, and OkCupid did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Jess Carbino, a sociologist for Bumble, told Business Insider in a statement that out of its female users over 40, 60% believe the app will "most likely to lead to the type of relationship they desire."

But how many swipes must a single lady swipe to get there? My mom compared it to panning for gold. (I swear she is not that old.) "You really have to dig in the dirt for that speck of gold, you have to go through hundreds of different profiles," she said.

Though, she questioned, this may not be entirely the fault of dating apps, but how people use them.

"Dating apps work for men, and older men, but don’t work for older women," my mom said. "Most women who are older are not looking for hookups, where most men are looking for whatever experiences they can get. How do you find those few men who are out there who are looking for a relationship?"

That is a question Crystal, 57, has been asking for the 15 years she's been single. (Crystal declined to have her last name published.) She's a single mom living in Pittsburgh, and she's tried it all: eharmony, Match, OkCupid, Plenty of Fish. Just before the holidays, she canceled Bumble, finding it all to be too stressful.

She's hopped from app to app like most people do — hoping to find a new pool of available people. But what she found was just recycled profiles.

"Whenever I go out, I see all these license plates from states all over and think, 'There has to be some available people here!'" said Crystal. "I am self-sufficient, I just prefer not to be alone. I guess the idea of the long-term relationship scares people away."

Crystal wants to try Silver Singles after Valentine's Day and plans to change her profile to say "just looking to date."

Her best advice to other ladies her age on the apps: don't list yourself as looking for an activities partner.

"That is when all the weirdos come out of the woodwork," she said.

    The takeaway

I have to admit: as a 25-year-old, the kind of dating the 50-plus ladies I spoke with described is the only dating I have ever known. However, I grew up in the digital era, where you can be flaky in real life, flirty over text, have low expectations, and shallow notions.

This is a new frontier for older women like my mom. She's living in a world where society tells older men that they're silver foxes, and older women to take up knitting. It's not the best message to take into the next chapter of her life — one where she is newly single and searching for something not so vapid, all the while playing the dating game with rules made up by a younger generation and tools that condone it.

In light of that, she's gotten a lot more specific. She realized she didn't have to feel frustrated so often if she just leaned into it.

These days, she refuses to date Cancers — or any water sign, for that matter. And that is why she recently re-downloaded Bumble: she gets to see right away if a potential match has an unappetizing astrological sign.

I asked her why she decided to do it all over again.

"If I didn’t have the apps, I would have no options," she said, laughing. "The benefit is it gives you options. You get frustrated and get off it and then get lonely and get back on. It’s a cycle. It's like anything else, you run the gauntlet. That's life."

Self-driving cars could actually make congestion much worse      Cache   Translate Page

    uber self driving car

    • Self-driving cars may eventually eliminate the need for personal vehicles, but they may not lessen road congestion
    • New research from the Journal of Transportation Policy suggests traffic could even get worse as self-driving cars cruise empty on streets awaiting their next rider.
    • The findings could be more fuel for those seeking to implement congestion charges in more cities.

Where does your self-driving car go after it has dropped you off?

That’s the question Adam Millard-Ball set out to answer in his latest research — and the results of his investigation could throw cold water on some of the promised benefits of self-driving cars.

As the University of California, Santa Cruz environmental studies professor lays out in his research set to publish next month in the Journal of Transportation Policy, autonomous vehicles have three choices when it comes to what to do between rides: park, go home, or circle aimlessly to kill time.

"In practice, the decisions by AVs regarding parking location and where to park or cruise are likely to be economically driven," the paper says. And the cheapest option is likely to be cruising for more than 40% of trips, Millard-Ball found.

Read more: Waymo One passengers reveal what it's really like to ride in Alphabet's self-driving taxis

Circling aimless while waiting on their next trip means not having to feed a parking meter, which would be difficult with no human passengers anyway. In order to keep costs low, that driving is likely to be done at low speeds, too.

"Cruising, counterintuitively, would have a greater impact on congestion than on vehicle travel, given that cruising AVs have the incentive to travel as slowly as possible and thus would drive relatively few kilometers," writes Millard-Ball.

AVs are even more reason for congestion pricing

The idea of charging drivers to enter a central business district or congested area is starting to gain steam in the United States, particularly in places like New York and Los Angeles. Millard-Ball suggests that self-driving cars will only exacerbate the need for such a scheme.

If cars can avoid parking charges by cruising, keeping an eye out for parking enforcement, or simply moving as dictated by timed zones, a congestion charge may be the only way.

"The parking behavior of autonomous vehicles would land cities with a twofold blow," says Millard-Ball. "A dramatic drop in the cost of parking that encourages more trips by car, and greater vehicle travel and congestion from each trip due to cruising, returning home, and traveling to free on-street spaces."

In London, one of the proponents’ top examples of success is that total traffic volume dropped 10% after the charge was implemented, and generated 1.2 billion GBP for the region’s transportation agency. Millard-Ball proposes a two-tiered structure: a charge to use public right of way in addition to a distance-based or energy-based charge to account for the "other externalities" involved in driving.

"Congestion pricing makes economic sense in any urban future," says Millard-Ball. "But even more so in a world of autonomous vehicles."

2015 NL Champion Mets Catcher: Travis d'Arnaud (2013-2019)      Cache   Translate Page
Travis d'Arnaud was born on February 10, 1989 in Lakewood California. The six foot two catcher grew up a Los Angeles Dodgers fan & Mets Hall of Famer Mike Piazza was his favorite player.

His older brother Chase d'Arnaud is a shortstop with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

After attending high school at Los Alamitos, Ca. Travis went to Pepperdine University playing baseball for there for one season. He was then signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 37th round, of the 2007 first year player draft.

In 2008 he played in the A ball,New York Penn. League batting .309 in 48 games played. He finished the year at A ball Lakewood batting .297 in 16 games.

In 2009 he remained with the Lakewood Blue Claws, made the All Star team & won the South Atlantic Championship. His batting average fell off to .255, but he began to show some power hitting 13 HRs & 38 doubles in 126 games. He was already considered a solid minor league player with a good future.

Trivia: In one game, his brother Chase attempted to steal three bases, getting nailed all three times. Two of those times he was thrown out by his brother Travis.

In 2010 he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays organization in the Roy Halladay deal.

In 2010 d'Arnaud dealt with back issues while playing in the Florida State League seeing action in just 71 games. He hit .259 with 6 HRs & posted a .996 fielding % behind the plate, while throwing out 30% of would be base stealers. His level of play got him a mid season & post season All Star selections.

In 2011 he began to develop into a top prospect, he batted .311 with a boost of power to his bat, hitting 21 HRs 33 doubles 78 RBIs & a .371 on base % while playing at AA New Hampshire.

Behind the plate he posted a .993 fielding % making just four errors in 424 chances, throwing out 27% of would be base stealers. He once again received dual All Star Honors & was named the Eastern League's MVP. He was named the best defensive catcher in his league & the number two prospect behind Bryce Harper. d'Arnaud went on win his second Championship with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

In 2012 at AAA Las Vegas (now the Mets affiliate) of the Pacific Coast League, he was named to the Futures Game, but soon suffered a knee injury limiting him to 67 games. The injury had him fall to the 23rd Top Prospect from #6.

In that time he batted .333 with 16 HRs 21 doubles 52 RBIs & a .380 on base %. In 55 games at catcher he threw out 30% of would be base stealers & posted a .991 fielding %.

On December 17th 2012, d'Arnaud came to the New York Mets along with Noah Syndergaard, John Buck & Wuilmer Becerra in exchange for Cy Young Winner R.A. Dickey, Josh Thole & Mike Nickeas.

After playing Spring Training with the Mets he was optioned to AAA Las Vegas . He soon suffered a foot fracture & missed three months of action, after a slow recovery.

He played six games with the Gulf Coast Mets (batting .318) then seven games at AA Binghamton (.222) getting to AAA Las Vegas again in August, where he hit .304.

d'Arnaud make his much anticipated debut on August 17th, drawing two walks in an 8-2 loss at San Diego. On August 20th, he got his first career hit (a double), coming off the Braves Luis Ayala in a 5-3 Mets win over the Braves. On August 25th, he hit his first career HR, it came off the Detroit Tigers Rick Porcello in a terrible 11-3 Mets loss.

d'Arnaud saw ample playing time in September splitting time behind the plate with Anthony Recker. In 30 games he had a perfect 1.000 fielding %, making ten assists, making no errors throwing out 5 of 19 base runners attempting to steal (21%).

On September 15th, he singled off the Miami Marlins Ryan Webb to break a scoreless 12th inning tie, bringing in Lucas Duda with the games winning run.

He was batting under .200 but hit safely in five of his last six games to get to .202. Overall he was 20 for 99 in 31 games with one HR, three doubles, five RBIs & a .286 on base%.

The young Mets pitchers have already praised his pitch calling, knowledge of their styles & ability to make low pitches look like strikes. Many baseball folks believe he has the potential to be one of the games best backstops.

At the plate he needed to show more patience, something former Mets hitting coach Dave Hudgens heavily taught.

He started out the 2014 season very slow, batting just .202 with two HRs & six RBIs by May 12th. That night he helped the Mets to a 9-7 subway series win, with a HR. But the next day he suffered a concussion, the third of his career when he was hit in the head with a back swing from Alfonso Soriano. He missed over two weeks of action.

On June 6th he was sent back down to AAA Las Vegas to fine tune his hitting. In the 15 games after his demotion, he hit .436 with 6 home runs. On June 24th he was called back up to the Mets and resumed his role as starting catcher. He started out with a seven game hit streak, hitting safely in 15 of 17 games.

On July 4th, he broke a top of the 9th inning 4-4 tie in Texas, with a two run double off Aaron Poreda. The Mets went on to a 6-5 win. Over the next four games he hit HRs against the Rangers & the Atlanta Braves while driving in four runs.

On July 18th, he led the Mets to a 5-4 win in San Diego, with a top of the 9th inning tie breaking RBI base hit. On July 28th, he had a three hit, three RBI game against the Phillies in a 7-1 Mets win.

In August he hit four HRs & kept his average up near .230, an improvement from the .200 mark.

On September 5th, he hit a three run HR & drove in another run helping the Mets in a 14-5 win over the Reds in Cincinnati. He finished the year at .242 with 13 HRs, 22 doubles & 32 RBIs.

Defensively he played in 105 games at catcher, posting a .990 fielding % although he did make nine errors (3rd most in the NL) & led the league with 12 passed balls.

2015 opened up with excitement & expectations for the Mets to win & make a playoff run. Little did any one know how well they would do, making it to the World Series. d'Arnaud started out the season well, on Opening Day he collected a pair of hits, including a 7th inning RBI triple off the Nats Max Scherzer, which sealed the Mets 3-1 win at Washington.

d'Arnaud would have a tremendous start, in his first eleven games he would bat .319
hitting safely in eight of them & driving in at least one run in all but two. On April 15th he hit his first HR of the season, it came at home against the Philadelphia Phillies in a 6-1 Met win.

On April 19th, he was hit on the hand by a pitch from the Miami Marlins A.J. Ramos & wound up missing two months of action with a fractured hand. He came back to the line up in June but after just eight games, he was back on the DL again until July 31st. In those eight games he hit two HRs & drove in seven runs.

By the time he came back the Mets were in first place & defending their spot on top of the NL East. Rookie Kevin Plaweki had taken over the catcher spot & did a fine job in d'Arnauds absence, although his bat was certainly missed.

In the final two weeks of August he played in 12 games hitting 3 HRs with 12 RBIs. On August 24th he had three hits with a HR & three RBIs in the Mets 16-7 crushing of the Phillies in Philadelphia.

On September 5th, in a game against the Marlins in Florida, d'Arnaud hit a three run HR in the 1st inning. It was followed by a Wilmer Flores solo shot. In the 2nd inning, he added an RBI single to earn himself his biggest RBI day of his season. In the first two weeks of September he drove in another 11 runs adding to the Mets high run production.

Since July 31st, The Mets run production was much higher from the first half of the season. This was mostly due to the fact of the addition of Yoenis Cespedes & Michael Conforto as well. Also Kelly Johnson & Juan Uribe's additions helped too. But some what over looked is Travis d'Arnaud returning to the line up healthy.

He finished up the year playing in 67 games, batting .268 with a .340 on base % (23 walks). He hit 12 HRs with 14 doubles & 41 RBIs. Behind the plate in 64 games he threw out 33% of runners trying to steal. According to baseball reference his range factor per game for 2015 was 2nd in the NL (9.08).

2015 Post Season: NLDS After going hitless in the first two games of NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, d'arnaud had a big Game #3. In the 2nd inning with the Mets down 3-0, d'Arnaud started a rally by driving in the Mets first run of the game.

He then scored on Curtis Grandersons bases loaded three run double. The next inning d'Arnaud added a two run HR scoring Yoenis Cespedes as the Mets went on to a big 13-7 win.

In the final Game #5 clincher at Dodger Stadium, d'Arnaud tied up the game with a sac fly foul ball down the right field line, off Zack Greinke, scoring Daniel Murphy.

2015 NLCS: On October 17th, in Game #1 of the NLCS at Citi Field, d'Arnaud hit a 6th inning solo HR off the Chicago Cubs Jon Letser, putting the Mets up 3-1. They went on to a 4-2 victory. d'Arnaud had two hits that night & another in Game #2.

In Game #4 at Wrigley Field, d'Arnaud followed Lucas Duda's three run HR with a solo shot of his own, putting New York up 4-0 as they rolled on to an 8-3 win going to their first World Series since 2000.

2015 World Series: In Game #1 of the 2015 World Series against the KC Royals, d'Arnaud tied up the game with a 4th inning single off Edinson Volquez. The Mets went on to lose the game 5-4 in extra innings. In Game #3 he added a double & two hits in the Mets 9-3 win behind Noah Syndergaard's pitching.

Overall in the post season he played in all 14 games, going 10-55 (.182) with 3 HRs 7 RBIs & one double. He struck out 17 times & did not walk.

In 2016 d'Arnaud was the Mets Opening Day catcher & scheduled to be their main guy behind the play. It did not turn out that way & was a very disappointing year for him.

At the end of April the injuries began & he would miss two months returning in late June.  That gave Rene Rivera the chance & he beat out Kevin Plawecki as the main backstop. d'Arnaud would return to the Mets after stints in St. Lucie & AAA Vegas. He return to Citi Field & would finally hit above .200 by the end of June.

On June 24th he had a three RBI day in an 8-6 win over the Atlanta Braves. On July 4th he hit his first HR & another two days later leading the Mets to wins both days. When he returned he gave up his uniform #7 back to Jose Reyes & took on #18 in honor of retired NLF Quarterback Peyton Manning.

In August he hit just two HRs with four RBIs and played sparingly in September.

He finished the year playing in 75 games, with 4 HRs 7 doubles 15 RBIs & a .307 on base %. Behind the plate he threw out 23% of would be base stealers & posted a .998% fielding %.

In the off season the Mets did not peruse a catcher, in January they agreed to giving d'Arnaud a one year deal worth $1.8 million.

He arguably may have had his best year at the plate in 2017, batting .244 with career highs in HRs (16) & RBIs (57). He also 19 doubles with 85 hits but posted a poor .293 on base %.

On April 11th, he hit his first HR of the year while collecting three hits. Two games later, he had a four hit day with another HR & four RBIs. On April 29th he had his biggest game of the year, hitting two HRs off the Nats Matt Scherzer, while driving in five runs in a 7-5 Mets win, snapping a five game losing streak.

In mid May he made yet another trip to the DL, missing three weeks of action. In June hit four HRs then took five more weeks until he hit another.

He had a big September with 19 hits 6 HRs & 19 RBIs. He started out the month hitting safely in 10 of 13 games, rassining his average ten points.

On September 22nd, he had another two HR game & his third game of the year with at least four RBIs. Three days later, he hit a two run HR leading the Mets in a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves. Two games later he had a three RBI day in a 7-1 Mets win over the Phillies.

In 2018 he started out as the Opening Day catcher, but tore his UCL in his right elbow, missing the rest of the entire season. He played in just four games at the big league level going 3-15 with a HR & 3 RBIs.

The Mets realizing that they could not rely on d'Arnaud, quickly went after catchers in the off season, landing veteran Wilson Ramos as their main backstop. They gave him a one year deal at the end of the season, so he is in their plans as a back up & possibly a utility man in other positions.

In his six year career in 397 games he is batting .245 with 327 hits 47 HRs 65 doubles & 162 RBIs. He has walked 110 times & struck out 248 times with a .306 on base %.

Behind the plate he has thrown out 21% of would be base stealers, with a .994 fielding % in 369 games.

Family: His brother is infielder Chase d'Arnaud. He has played seven years in the major leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2011-2014) Philadelphia Phillies (2015) Atlanta Braves (2016) Boston Red Sox & San Diego Padres (2017) San Francisco Giants (2018). He is a .222 lifetime hitter with 5 HRs & 40 RBIs in 236 career games.

In November 2017 Travis married his wife the former, Brittney Cobain. They live with their beloved dog, in Long Island City in what is described as an amazing view of Manhattans skyline apartment.

I'm 25, and I talked to 3 single women in their 50s about what it's like to use dating apps like Tinder and Bumble. Their experiences surprised me      Cache   Translate Page

    older women dating apps4x3

    • Single women over the age of 50 are finding themselves discouraged with dating apps that tend to cater to younger generations and embrace hook-up culture.

"This is a big business and they are missing out," said Gonzalez, referring to popular dating app companies who don't cater to older people.

    bumble dating app

    Tinder app
