I am the proud grandfather of a baby boy. Cache Translate Page
On a personal note:

I am the proud grandfather of a baby boy!

On Tuesday February 5th, my daughter Rachel Anne Williams Bennett gave birth to a healthy baby boy. His name is Cova New Bennett and he weighted 8lb and 1 oz and was 20 inches in length. He is the prettiest baby you have ever seen!

Rachel is married to Joshua Bennett and they live in New Orleans and have lived there about five years, moving to New Orleans shortly after they got married. Cova was born at 10AM on Tuesday. I flew down and was there by about 5PM and got to hold my new grandson. I spend the night and visited the hospital again the next day and flew back to Nashville Wednesday evening. Due to my wife being an invalid and needing constant and total care, it can be difficult to get away. I appreciate Louella's care giver, Sue Deuss, for working around the clock so I could make the trip. I am so glad I did not miss this glorious event. I hope I get to return often to see him as he grows, even if my stays are short.

Rachel is my only child and I was beginning to think I was not going to be a grandfather. I am so happy!

Pelicans balancing Davis’ playing time with future concerns Cache Translate Page

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Even with one foot out the door, Anthony Davis is showing he can still produce prolific statistics for the New Orleans Pelicans. He only needed 25 minutes to score 32-points in his first game for New Orleans since requesting a trade nearly two weeks ago. Davis also had nine rebounds and […]
Comment on Parks on Translation Again. by John Cowan Cache Translate Page
Really a shame this only works in English. I finally figured out what this meant — it was too subtle for this low-context American. But no, the fictional Hadrian VII is English; he gave himself that name after Hadrian or Adrian IV, the very real English Pope (1154-59), born Nicholas Breakspear(e), the Pope who authorized the Norman invasion of Ireland, crowned Barbarossa, and very nearly reunited the Eastern and Western Churches (the case foundered on temporalities as well as the usual problem of papal authority). On covers: Judy Collins's "Both Sides Now" is a beautiful soundscape, but as a piece of singing it's what Joni said it was, soulless. On the other hand, I will always prefer Arlo's "City of New Orleans" to Steve Goodman's original. When I myself sing "MTA Charlie" I compromise: I restore the original (and factual) "Walter F. O'Brien" instead of "George O'Brien", but I shout the words "CHARLIE A SANDWICH", which is derived from the Weavers' version. I don't go so far as to change "MTA" (historically correct) to "MBTA", though.

On Friday's podcast, I opened the show reacting to the moves that were made (and weren't made) before Thursday's NBA Trade Deadline. Now that Anthony Davis remains in New Orleans, will the Boston Celtics land him this summer? And would Jayson Tatum be part of the package? What about Kyrie Irving's status after this season? The C's are about to have an interesting summer. Plus, I shared some afterthoughts on the Patriots' Super Bowl championship (42:00), discussed a huge MLB trade that made minimal headlines (52:45), and reacted to Kenny Omega choosing AEW over WWE (55:42).

Michael Thomas, Cameron Heyward and Denzel Ward Crack the Pro Football Focus Top 101 Players List Cache Translate Page

The NFL season is over, which means it's time to reflect on some of the league's best performances.

Pro Football Focus put together their annual list of the top-101 players based solely on their performance during the 2018-19 season.

The ratings system weighs each position equally, even though quarterback is arguably the most valuable position. And unlike other lists, it also takes playoff production into account.

When the dust settled, three Buckeyes cracked the top-101. Here's a look from Pro Football Focus:

89. DENZEL WARD, CLEVELAND BROWNS

Top 101 appearances: New entry

The second-highest-graded rookie cornerback this year, Ward lived up to his top-five billing. He allowed a catch rate of 53.7 and passer rating of 70.7 to transform the Browns’ secondary. We’ll be seeing his name on this list for years to come.

...

57. CAMERON HEYWARD, PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Top 101 appearances: 2

Heyward recorded an overall grade of 84.9 this year, the 16th-best mark among interior defenders and his second consecutive grade of 80.0 or higher. As usual, he was a force as a pass rusher and generated 59 total pressures on the year, the fifth-most among players at the position.

...

6. MICHAEL THOMAS, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

Top 101 appearances: 3

Thomas continued his emergence as one of the best wideouts in the league with his best season to date. His overall grade of 91.6 was second to only DeAndre Hopkins this year, and his WR rating of 124.0 was ninth-best.

A couple Buckeyes were notably missing from this year's edition of the list.

Joey Bosa was excluded for the first time and came it at No. 28, though he missed a substantial portion of the season with injury. Marshon Lattimore also made last year's list at No. 29, but did not make it this year. Ezekiel Elliott was another perceived snub as he led the league in rushing but did not crack the top-101 players.

INTERVIEW: Jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis talks about focusing on emotion Cache Translate Page

In addition to playing with giants like Art Blakey and Miles Davis, he's spent years touring with solo-era Sting, performed with Harry Connick Jr. and the Grateful Dead, and fronted the jazz-rock-funk mash-up Buckshot LeFonque.

He also acted in movies and on TV and led "The Tonight Show" band in the early Jay Leno years. But saxophonist Branford Marsalis's four-decade-and-counting career colors far outside the lines of the jazz tradition he embodies and defends.

His eclectic genre-transgressing career was in sharp contrast to his slightly younger, equally virtuosic but more conservative brother Wynton. But if Wynton was more of a household name, Branford was always cooler and edgier, the Rolling Stones to his brother's Beatles, or at least the Lennon to his McCartney.

The onetime young lion is now 58, leading a quartet that has mostly been together since the turn of the century. The newest member, drummer Justin Faulkner, joined in 2009. Its most recent recording is "Upward Spiral," a 2016 collaboration with premier jazz singer Kurt Elling. On March 1, it is releasing "The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul," its first all-instrumental recording in seven years.

Style spoke by phone with Marsalis, who is performing at the University of Richmond on Feb. 15. There is an extended portion of the interview following the article.

Style Weekly: The new album title is from Pablo Neruda's "Sonnet XVII." How does it relate to the music?

Branford Marsalis: I just like the way it sounds. I play instrumental music, so it doesn't have to have any meaning. All of the songs on the record are about emotions, they are not about data. The first song is angry and aggressive. The second song is melancholy. The third song is happy. I can't remember what the fourth song is. I read a lot of poetry for enjoyment. Certain things jump out at me. I don't question it, I just know it. I thought it was a really cool-ass phrase.

When people talk about love they always talk about it sophomorically. It requires a certain amount of depth of thought to use words to talk about the unknown things. It takes a really talented person to use words to describe what words can't describe. You have to have a super-vivid imagination, which he clearly did. The writing is quite beautiful, in a way that is surprising.

You've said that working with singers like Kurt Elling has made your own playing more concise.

Well, we got better is all. Playing with Kurt was great for the group. I had been in singing bands before, the rest of the guys hadn't. You have to suddenly play a solo that gets to the point and gets out. You can't play too long, or you kill the momentum.

We focus on emotion. The music system is limited … like having a language that only has 12 syllables. You only have 12 notes. You can put them in all these combinations, but it is still the same 12 notes. There are languages without a tremendous number of syllables. They are complicated to understand. What a word means is based on where it is put and how it is said.

The change in your band is a continuous process?

If you have the right musicians, yes. … A lot of players learn a particular style and then force it on every situation. You need to have people who are musically curious enough and disciplined enough to allow whatever you are doing to change the way they perceive sound. I am lucky that Eric, Joey and Justin are fantastic players, but on top of that fantastic musicians. They were happy to do this for a while. There is an inflection point, then you can't wait to get out and play again. Everything is changed.

How do you keep the audience engaged?

My dad told me when I was 15 and playing in an R&B band, that most audiences are the same, they hear with their eyes. It was entertainment. It was the '80s, so we had costumes and I had to learn dance steps. That is something I am not good at. I always tried to hide behind the better dancers.

It's the same now. After a show people come up and say that they didn't understand what we played, but they loved seeing us have so much fun playing it.

They could tell there was information flying back and forth. But they can't tell you what the information is, but my argument is that they shouldn't have to. It may always be a challenging listen, but we will always play a couple of songs that everyone can totally relate to.

The Branford Marsalis Quartet plays the Modlin Center on Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $45, with discounts for seniors, groups and students.

Extended interview:

How did you choose the covers that are included on the CD?

Branford Marsalis: The song, the way it sounds and what it represents. The Andrew Hill song [“Snake Hip Waltz”] is a happy song. It is quirky because it is in ¾ and what he tried to do is write a series of three-bar phrases in a society where we write four-bar phrases for everything. He couldn’t get all the way to the end without writing a four-bar phrase, but the trying was really cool. We needed a song that had that happy go-lucky emotion.

And “Windup,” the Keith Jarrett composition from his European band?

Eight years ago when my daughter was ten, she was sitting at the kitchen table and I was playing “Well You Needn’t” from the album “Monk’s Music.” I was listening to it, trying to come up with this serious idea about Monk’s music. She’s not a jazz kid, but she said “Who’s that? I like this song. It sounds happy.”

It had never occurred to me to apply emotion to the data I’d been studying. The more I listened I was like, shit, it is happy. If you listen to modern jazz, it’s anything but happy, it’s cynical. That one interaction made me listen differently. I can hear that the song is happy.

I think [Keith Jarrett’s] group was more interested in playing it in the Ornette Coleman style. Keith spent a lot of time listening to Ornette. There are a couple of YouTube videos of him playing saxophone that are interesting. He is a hell of a good saxophone player. They were trying to play a style that they hadn’t listened to or studied a lot. They were playing to not make mistakes, very defensively.

I always said this was one of those great songs I would like to play. I was listening to the record one day on the plane [and] I took out my pencil and sketched it out. Filled it in when I got to the piano at the gig, and said we are playing this tomorrow night. Everyone knows it already, it is a refresher course, we have all heard it enough times. Justin put this New Orleans beat on it. He was living in New Orleans, working on a film that is probably never going to come out. But he met some of the great drummers who were there. They taught him this New Orleans beat. It was great, do your thing. The arrangements happen organically with us. We play songs, you have to allow things to happen. I am happy doing that. The guys are creative.

I learned a lot listening to Jan [Garbarek]. Particularly that melancholy shit. The tone is a little sharp for my ear, but the stuff he is playing. It is some happy-ass music. The good thing about emotion: We are playing some crazy shit, but we play it happily, so it sounds happy.

We are a big listening band. Our sound vocabulary is huge. Modern players rely more on harmonic vocabulary than sound vocabulary. We have a lot of sonic references we can draw from. As a result, we can take a song and make it sound really big, or really small. We have a lot of sonic options that [the Keith Jarrett band] didn’t have. They existed in one particular space, even if it was a really cool-ass space. [Our quartet] can occupy lots of different space.

Why was there such a long break between Quartet albums?

We have been working steadily, but it is foolish to send a lot of jazz records out there. Jazz records don’t sell a lot anyway. Throwing them out eight months apart really cripples your chances of selling anything. So we did the “Four MFs Playin’ Tunes” record, and then a solo record, that I never expected to come out. We switched distributors, they wanted something new and that was the only product we had. I didn’t even know if it was good or not. That wasn’t a musical choice, it was a political necessity.

After that came the Kurt Elling record. It wasn’t a deliberate thing, but we had to give come air between releases. Ironically as a band we needed some time anyway. When you do a project like the Kurt record it completely changed the DNA of the band. When we started playing the tunes, we were trying to play them like it was 2015, but it was 2017. We couldn’t go back. We had to give the music some time to figure out our new sound.

Does that kind of experience always reshape the band concept?

If you have the right musicians, yes. [Maybe not] if you don’t. A lot of players learn a particular style and then force it on every situation. You need to have people who are musically curious enough and disciplined enough to allow whatever you are doing to change the way they perceive sound. I am lucky that Eric [Revis], Joey [Calderazzo], and Justin [Faulkner] are fantastic players, but on top of that, they are fantastic musicians. They were happy to [work on the new approach] for a while. There is an inflection point, then you can’t wait to get out and play again. Everything is changed.

A lot of guys, their version of change is not through jazz. They move to New York to play jazz. He plays in clubs and makes a jazz record. The first record doesn’t sell. He makes a second record. Second record doesn’t sell. The third record is a funk record, which will not sell because he is not a funk player. But there is this thing that jazz guys believe, that anything with a backbeat sells. There are literally millions of records over the last 45 years that verify that everything with a backbeat does not sell, but there is this weird mindset that people who have gone from jazz to playing popular sounds, while never having done that in their lives, and are not connected to it in anyway, that music has no choice but to come across as cynical. It is not an earnest decision.

Having grown up playing classical music first, popular music second, and jazz music third, I thought that any kind of change in the band must come through jazz. Not playing another style of music and calling it jazz.

Funk is the new swing? Everybody has to do it the way they need to do it. I think there is an established sound to jazz that has existed for 100 years. Now you have a bunch of people who don’t like jazz, but like the idea of liking jazz. So they will like jazz as long as it has improv and a beat they are familiar with. There are people who do that and do quite well for themselves. Bravo to them .... When Herbie Hancock did “Headhunters,” that is not a jazz record. For a lot of my friends it was. There was no way to explain to them why it was not a jazz record. Then I have to sit down and make them listen for months to music they can’t stand. Then they come to the realization that “maybe this is not a jazz record, but I like this better.” Which is fine. I am not saying everyone should like the music.

But there is a this whole pattern that has existed since I was a kid. They like calling jazz a big tent, but one of the key tenets of the big tent is that the thing that is actually called jazz they know nothing about. They think it should be jazz because they like it.

It’s not a war you can win. Not a war [I'm] interested in winning. I am just interested in getting with my guys and playing. How I feel about it is expressed in our records and how we play on the gigs ...

When my pipes go bad, I call the plumber. They don’t ask me how to do it. We need to lay this music. It is our job to communicate to them. They pay us money, they go home happy.

But there are a lot of musicians that somehow believe that their music is so sophisticated that it is above the heads of most people, and it is incumbent on people to rise up to where they are. That is the most unsuccessful formula I have ever heard. You can read articles about the musicians that jazz writers say are really great, go to the concerts and they are half empty.

Because if a musician really is a genius- and I hate that word- they will find their way to get their point across, no matter how complicated- to people, regular people.

That is the challenge, not developing some system that no one can decipher. The attention in jazz tends to go to that nerdy way of thinking. So, the music writ large is put in this position where people say they hate jazz, but it is not jazz they hate but the way people play it. It may always be a challenging listen, but we will always play a couple of songs that everyone can totally relate to. We are here to play for you. We will give you some of our thoughts, but we will also play things you can completely identify with. We do both.

Back in the day, Wynton was the approachable Beatles and you were the edgier Rolling Stones.

Right. Although I like the Beatles better than the Rolling Stones. But I hear you.

It took me a while to get to the Stones. I am there now, I get it. If you sit around and study music all day long, and study structure. What is the [complex] song structure of a Beatles tune in comparison to the Rolling Stones’ most simple structure? The irony was that when I was a kid, I was playing R&B and rock and roll, all simple structures. When I was in school, I was learning all this other stuff.

We all come around, or we should. Most of the times I use the Rolling Stones in my music class, rather than the Beatles.

Who thinks Keith Richards is a great guitar player? No one. Suppose you say I have a song that is almost good, and I need a lick that is so infectious that it will take it right over the top? Who do you get? The better guitar player? No, you get Keith Richards. That’s what the music is about.

Steve Vai is certainly a better guitar player, but most people would want to be Keith Richards.

Anthony Davis #23 of the New Orleans Pelicans looks on during the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Smoothie King Center

On Thursday, the 2019 NBA trade deadline came and went with Anthony Davis not being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers or any other team in the league. He is still a member of the roster of the New Orleans Pelicans and will be at least until this summer. On Friday night, he returned to the court for the first time in weeks after suffering a finger injury, and it ended up being very different than what he’s been used to at the Smoothie King Center.

Not only was this Davis’s first game in a while due to injury, but it was his first game since publicly requesting a trade from the Pelicans. Many wondered just how things would go with him being with the team through the remainder of the season, but it worked out well for the Pelicans as they defeated the T-Wolves 122-117.

The New Orleans Pelicans May Be Sticking It To The NBA By Playing Anthony Davis Exactly 25 Minutes A Night Cache Translate Page

Anthony Davis appears before an NBA game.

The NBA reportedly told the New Orleans Pelicans that they wouldn’t be allowed to keep Anthony Davis stashed on the bench the rest of the year, and that they would have to play the superstar at least 25 minutes a night.

In his first game back since the trade deadline passed, the Pelicans did that — exactly 25 minutes, no more.

Davis has caused a stir and drew a fine from the NBA by publicly demanding a trade out of New Orleans and dictating a list of teams he would like to go to, causing some major tension with the Pelicans front office and reportedly prompting the team to consider shutting him down for the year to conserve trade value. That led the NBA to speak to the Pelicans, bringing up the possibility of a $100,000 fine and leading the team to come to an agreement with Davis about playing time, ESPN reported.

Although the Los Angeles Lakers put on a united front as they edged the Boston Celtics, 129-128, on Thursday night, numerous reports ahead of the NBA’s trade deadline hinted at tension behind the scenes. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, it was even speculated that the New Orleans Pelicans had stretched out negotiations for their All-Star big man, Anthony Davis, and spread trade rumors to sow discontent among Los Angeles’ younger players, all in revenge for the Lakers’ alleged tampering with Davis.

School closures appear to slightly lower test scores Cache Translate Page

Complete report

Chalkbeat reviewed 17 studies published over the last decade, which look at how closures affected students’ academic performance in different cities and states. (You can find all the studies here.) They help answer a key question for those who fear closures hurt students academically — though they can’t capture other impacts of school closing on a community.

1. In many places, closures hurt students academically; in some others, they helped. Nationwide, closures appear to slightly lower test scores.

In a few cases, students whose schools closed benefitted in at least some way. That was true in four studies Chalkbeat reviewed: in Ohio, for instance, students saw major jumps in test scores post-closure; in New Orleans, closures boosted high school graduation rates by about 20 percentage points.

But these results were more exception than rule. In several other places, displaced students were harmed in measurable ways.

In Milwaukee, for instance, high school closures caused steep declines in high school graduation and college enrollment rates. A recent Chicago study — focusing on the highly controversial round of nearly 50 school closures in 2013 — showed that affected students had lower math scores even four years after the closure. (There were no clear effects on suspension or attendance rates.)

In another handful of studies, students’ academic performance declined but eventually bounced back, suggesting the closures were disruptive but the effects were temporary. A Michigan study looking at nearly 250 closures over a few years found a drop in math scores for displaced students after one year, though by year three the negative effect had faded away.

Based on these divergent results, it’s not a surprise that a major national study lands somewhere in between. This 2017 paper looking at over 1,500 closures across 26 states found, on average, very small negative effects in math and reading on displaced students.

Anthony Davis admits being booed by home fans was 'awkward' Cache Translate Page
Anthony Davis returned to the New Orleans Pelicans lineup on Friday night, but not all fans were happy to see him. Davis was booed audibly by some of the fans in New Orleans, but he still posted 32 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes in a Pelican victory. Still, the atmosphere created an odd game, and Davis admitted that it was strange to hear booing from those who had supported him the most in the past. Davis discussed the situation, via Michael C. Wright of ESPN: “That was definitely awkward. Boo? OK. It doesn’t matter to me. I’m going to go out there and play basketball. I was [surprised]. But hey, that’s life, man. Some people are not gonna like me. I’m just happy to be back on the floor playing the game that I love.” Davis’s public trade demand clearly bothered a lot of Pelicans fans, and the fact that he didn’t get his wish just makes things more uncomfortable. The Pelicans have been left with no choice but to play him, and it’s likely that this initial awkwardness will pass, but it’s still going to

Mavs patzen trotz Dreier-Show - Nowitzki blass Cache Translate Page

Review

As a die hard audiobook fan, it's always SUCH a pleasure when a favorite author and a favorite narrator team up for the first time. As any avid (or rabid, depending on your word preference!) listener knows, a narrator can make or break a story. Sometimes a narrator can bring the characters to life in such a way that they resonate on a deeper level than just reading the words on a page and other times, if the narrator and the author and characters don't mesh well, the audio falls flat. In the case of Mary Calmes' His Consort, Scott Smith did more than deliver a stellar performance. He made me fall in love with Jason Thorpe and Varic Maedoc all over again and left me wanting more.

Scott Smith is one of those special narrators that just brings so much to add to your listening experience. The tone of his voice, the accents he uses, the pacing and cadence of the story combined with his unique inflections and the emotions that come through loud and clear in each scene all add to the enjoyment of listening to him. I'm a big fan of accents when they're done well, and Scott Smith is one of the best. He has a very unique way of making each voice match the character which is really what you want from a voice actor. Mary's books always wind up on my list of favorite audio books, and His Consort is no different. I am sure I'll listen to this one many times to come.

Pelicans reportedly would have been fined $100,000 per game sitting Anthony Davis Cache Translate Page
The NBA was planning to fine the Pelicans $100,000 per game if they sat Anthony Davis to protect his trade value. The New Orleans Pelicans announced they plan to reincorporate star Anthony Davis back into their lineup after not trading him before the deadline on Thursday. Many assumed the Pelicans would simply sit Davis through the rest of the season as a way to keep him healthy and protect his value as a trade asset — which would be a completely logical thing to do, as he's made it clear he wants to be traded and will not re-sign with the team in 2020. If Davis gets hurt, his trade value will plummet.

DistribuTech Spotlight: Hawaii’s Interoperable Grid Communications and Next-Gen Grid Planning Cache Translate Page

Distributed energy integration is the watchword for this year’s DistribuTech conference in New Orleans, even if the number of utilities diving headlong into DERs as an integral part of their power grid are relatively few, and the move is mainly driven by necessity.

Take Hawaiian Electric, the utility serving the country’s most solar-saturated power grids, each literally islanded from the other, and heading toward the state’s 100 percent by 2045 clean energy mandate. The utility is grappling with the integration of distributed PV, large-scale solar and wind, in-front-of and behind-the-meter batteries, electric vehicles, and other potentially disruptive technologies — and better ways to manage all of them.

At this week’s DistribuTech, HECO announced its partner for this next-generation set of smart grid communications capabilities: Landis+Gyr. The Swiss metering giant will “provide connectivity to participating customer accounts, as well as offer grid and distributed energy resource management capabilities,” as part of the five-year, $86.3 million Phase 1 of HECO’s grid modernization plan, which is now awaiting approval from the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission.

HECO’s grid modernization plan — its roadmap for the technology it needs to deploy to support this panoply of DERs — has gone through some changes since it was first introduced in 2016. In early 2017, the Hawaii PUC rejected its first plan, which called for $340 million in spending and included smart meters deployed across its service territory. HECO returned with a leaner $205 million plan, approved by the commission last year, that called for smart meters to be deployed more “strategically,” to customers with private rooftop solar on saturated circuits, or those who want to participate in demand response or variable rate programs.

Phase 1 calls for advanced smart meters capable of supporting the more complex data collection and communications needs of HECO’s Smart Export, Controlled Customer Grid Supply Plus, and Demand Response programs, along with a meter data management system that can perform analytics on both “scheduled and an on-demand basis” and support a customer portal for energy data access.

It also requires an “interoperable, scalable telecommunications network, which enables the communication path for both advanced meters and field devices for distribution sensing, control and automation.” These capabilities fit well with HECO’s need for sensors and control systems on its most solar-saturated distribution circuits, which can experience extended periods of reverse power flows as PV-generated power exceeds demand — a condition most grids weren’t designed to handle.

A different kind of AMI

This is a very different kind of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) deployment than the mass-market, mesh-networked systems deployed in California, Texas and other early markets in the late 2000s.

Over the past decade, Landis+Gyr and its chief AMI competitor, the combined Itron-Silver Spring Networks, have both made major advances in embedding distributed intelligence and multi-modal communications capabilities in their devices. It's part of an effort to expand beyond utilities into streetlights, traffic sensors and other internet-of-things applications.

HECO will also rely on this communications network to take on the novel task of actually controlling some behind-the-meter assets directly. Under its Controlled Customer Grid Supply Plus tariff, for example, customers must have an “acceptable telemetry interface” to allow for communication between the PV system and the utility-supplied meter, to allow the utility to curtail solar feeding onto the grid when conditions require it. Landis+Gyr’s platform, like Itron’s, can manage cellular connections for these devices if they’re separated from its mesh networks, using a single unified network management platform.

HECO’s agreement with Landis+Gyr is also noteworthy for being among the first to be able to claim it’s built on Wi-SUN Alliance-certified equipment. While Landis+Gyr and Itron are competitors, they’ve also been working together for years — largely driven by big utility customer Tepco — on an open specification for their IEEE 802.15.4g field area mesh networks, dubbed Wi-SUN.

After years of wrangling, the alliance launched its first Wi-SUN FAN Certification Program in October, laying the groundwork for Monday’s announcement of its first wave of members to complete interoperability testing: Cisco, Itron, Nissin Systems, Kyoto University, Landis+Gyr, Renesas and Rohm.

GTM has covered HECO's work with solar installers, smart inverter makersenergy storage providers and distribution grid power electronics providers to manage its increasing share of renewable, intermittent energy. All of these systems will require utility monitoring at the very least, and potentially a much more fine-grained level of control than utilities have ever undertaken at the edges of their distribution grids.

"We wanted a flexible communications component that could support our current and future needs for advanced metering, distribution automation and distributed energy resource integration, while being able to support multiple vendors and protocols," Ron Cox, HECO’s senior vice president of operations, said in a statement.

From real-time communications to integrated distribution planning

Granular, real-time orchestration of DERs to manage the distribution grid requires more than the devices and communications networks to enable that control. It also requires a much more high-fidelity understanding of the distribution network itself, both in terms of real-time operations, and in planning how the grid should be designed for a much more DER-integrated future.

Integrating DERs into distribution grid planning is a challenge for utilities, given the relative lack of clarity on their low-voltage systems. Utilities often have to clean up decades of data on repairs, improvements and alterations on their low-voltage systems before they can even begin the kind of power flow modeling required to enable the most sophisticated grid edge controls.

Over the years, we’ve been tracking a handful of startups with technology to make sense of this chaotic and largely dark portion of the utility electricity distribution network. One of them is Opus One Solutions, an Ontario, Canada-based startup that’s been providing real-time, two-way power flow modeling of distribution circuits for projects including National Grid’s distributed system platform pilot in Buffalo, N.Y., and transactive microgrids in Ontario and Maine.

At DistribuTech this week, Opus One revealed that it’s been working with HECO on a new application of its grid analytics — modeling the grid of the future. That’s the purpose of its GridOS Integrated Distribution Planning (IDP) product, a web-hosted, automated grid planning software suite that targets the entire ecosystem around distribution planning from utilities to consulting firms, system integrators and product partners, "ensuring cost-effective and reliable service to customers through advanced software applications.”

Wednesday’s commercial launch announcement highlighted the work Opus One has done with HECO to develop the IDP product. “With our enterprise, automated, and scalable web-based IDP solution, HECO was able to evaluate grid hosting capacity, power quality and investment options from operational planning to long term planning,” Opus One CEO Joshua Wong wrote in a Wednesday blog post

HECO’s island-by-island grids face a range of distribution grid planning challenges that most utilities don’t face. In 2017, HECO proposed an Integrated Grid Planning process to take on this challenge, extending the traditional utility integrated resource plan, which examines long-range needs for generation and transmission assets, into a view of the “needs at all levels of the system: customer, bulk power resources, transmission, and distribution.”

At GTM's Grid Edge World Forum conference in 2017, Wong hinted at this week’s HECO partnership reveal, telling us that the company had landed a “large U.S. investor-owned utility” to test out its distribution planning platform. Opus One’s technology for operational insight can also help utilities in the planning sphere with “how they might use DERs for non-wires alternatives, how they could defer infrastructure expense by doing DER placement in strategic areas of their grid, and helping them to develop programs to promote DER growth where it helps the grid as well as customers," Wong said.

Apocalyptic Sounds In The Sky: No Explanation For "Mysterious Booms And Flashes Of Light" All Across America Cache Translate Page

Authored by Michael Snyder via The End of The American Dream blog,

For weeks, Americans all over the country have been rattled by extremely loud booming sounds that seem to have no explanation, and they are often accompanied by “mysterious flashes of light”.

These strange booms are shaking homes and rattling windows, and some witnesses say that they sound like cannons being fired. And even though the “mystery booms” and accompanying flashes of light have been captured on camera all across the nation, so far the authorities do not have a reasonable explanation for why they are happening. Unfortunately, it does not appear that this strange phenomenon is going to go away any time soon. In fact, the Sun is reporting that the frequency of these “mystery booms” appears “to have gathered pace over the past week”…

MYSTERY booming sounds have been shaking houses and terrifying residents after “flashes of light” were spotted across America.

Experts have been left baffled by a spate of seismic booms from Arizona to New York that appear to have gathered pace over the past week.

Over this last weekend, this mystery started to get much more national attention after an incident in Rhode Island on Saturday was followed by one in New York City on Sunday

On Saturday, loud bangs were reported in Rhode Island, where Jeremy Braza’s doorbell captured a video and audio of a loud noise over a three minute period.

“The whole house shook,” he told TurnTo10.com. “It woke my wife up, woke up all my children.”

The following night an explosion was heard in New York, accompanied by a mysterious flash in the sky.

“What the heck was that boom or explosion in park slope Brooklyn?”, asked Matt Wasowski on Twitter.

But of course this is not just an east coast phenomenon. For example, a “loud boom” that was reported in Tennessee on January 31st was heard across three separate counties

It began on January 31 when residents of three separate counties in Tennessee reported hearing a loud boom around 11:30 a.m. Local chemical plants were contacted but reported nothing anomalous. Authorities in Bradley, McInn, and Polk counties are still investigating what could have caused such a powerful noise.

And during that same time frame, numerous North Carolina residents called authorities to report “unexplained loud blasts and booms”

That same day, local news in North Carolina reported that people in Wake and Franklin counties have been calling law enforcement agencies to report unexplained loud blasts and booms that keep them awake at night. Two homeowners even reported that the booms are so powerful that they have briefly lost power as a result of the tremors. So far, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office has been unable to pinpoint the source of the booms.

A few days later, “strange explosion-like sounds” were being reported by numerous residents in New Orleans

The mystery surrounding the strange explosion-like sounds heard by residents in the metro area continues to grow. Late Monday night, several were heard in Lakeview, one of which was caught on camera by Eyewitness News.

A story that began in Mid-City, has taken crews to Harahan, River Ridge and Wagaman. Now we go to Lakeview, where late Monday night, the mysterious ‘booms’ were heard again.

Are you starting to see a pattern?

Large booming sounds are being reported all over the nation, and often those large booming sounds are being accompanied by massive flashes of light. But in every case, the authorities have absolutely no idea what is causing this to happen.

And in case you were wondering if this was just happening in the eastern half of the country, here is a little taste of what has been going on in Tucson, Arizona

Faye DeHoff wrote, “first it was a major rattle…like a huge truck about to plow into my home…then the boom..that shook my windows…I was sure some of them were broken but they didn’t…my dog jumped up! I’m at River & Campbell.”

Ray C. Merrill wrote, “Oracle and Roger, it was shaking pretty good, and long enough for me to watch the blinds dance around, then get up and walk to the doorway, and it was still shaking.”

There was a similar sensation last week on Thursday, Jan 31 at 8:51 a.m. The same phenomenon; a rumble causing homes to shake and windows to rattle. I felt this one too on the northwest side and once again, so did so many others on Facebook all across Tucson and surrounding areas.

Some news reports are referring to these strange sounds as “seismic booms”, but there are no corresponding seismic events to back up that claim.

At this point we have a complete and total mystery on our hands. On YouTube, Jason A has done a great job of compiling news reports about these “mystery booms” from all over America, and you can watch his video right here.

We have entered a period of time when we should expect the unexpected. Things are strange and they are going to get a whole lot stranger. We aren’t always going to be able to explain what is happening, but without a doubt our planet is becoming increasingly unstable, and that growing instability is going to cause great chaos in the months and years ahead.

I wish that I knew what was causing all of these “mystery booms”, but I don’t. Thankfully they don’t appear to be causing any serious damage, and hopefully that won’t change.

Let’s just hope that all of this “shaking” is not leading up to something much bigger, because it isn’t going to take much to push America into a state of utter chaos right now.

US opposes withdrawal of guilty plea in officer's shooting
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Federal prosecutors oppose a man's effort to withdraw his guilty plea on charges related to the 2016 shooting of a Louisiana law officer.

Jarvis Hardy recently moved to withdraw his guilty plea on drug and firearm charges. The plea was part of a deal that included dropping of an attempted murder charge and a major firearms charge in the shooting of federal task force member Stephen Arnold. Hardy's motion says he accepted the deal and a negotiated 35-year sentence because he faced a minimum 45-year sentence if convicted as charged.

Now, his lawyers say changes in federal law could mean a lower minimum sentence.

Prosecutors say in a Friday filing that Hardy made the plea knowingly and that it should stand.

A hearing is set for Thursday.

New Orleans Charter Schools Must Include Parents/Alumni as Board Members

If school choice is about empowering parents (also see here and here and here), it seems that charter school boards would necessarily– automatically– definitely– include among their memberships the very parents who have been supposedly empowered.
New Orleans schools have been a showcase (albeit a controversial one) for charterization since the fall of 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated the area. By 2022— 17 years post-Katrina– the last local-board-run public school in New Orleans will be completely phased out, making New Orleans a 100-percent charter school district.
What is surprising, however, is how long it has taken lawmakers to require New Orleans’ charter schools to include parents and alumni– locals invested in the community– on the charter school boards.
It’s a shame that charter school boards must be forced to include locals in the actual roles of empowered decision-making. But so it goes.
The 2018-19 school year was the first in which New Orleans charter schools were required to include at least one parent or school alumnus on their boards. In 2019-20, all New Orleans charter schools (except those drawing from the entire state) must be comprised of boards in which both gender and racial makeup of the board must reflect that of the locality of the school– with at least 60 percent of board members being locals.
From legislation in Louisiana passed in 2018, regarding the boards of charter schools located in major cities (i.e., New Orleans):
Beginning October 1, 2018, the membership of the governing or management board of each charter school located in a parish with a population of between three hundred twenty-five thousand and three hundred seventy-five thousand persons, based on the most recent federal decennial census, shall include at least one member who is a parent, legal CONTINUE READING: New Orleans Charter Schools Must Include Parents/Alumni as Board Members | deutsch29

The AAF Is a Sensible Alternative to No Football at All Cache Translate Page

If you’re still buzzing from the punting bonanza that was last week’s Super Bowl, the Alliance of American Football is here to help take the edge off. The AAF (not to be confused with ALF, which was a television show about an alien and is spelled differently) makes its debut on Saturday night with two inaugural games. It follows in the footsteps of the USFL and XFL to provide spring football to the masses, though its creators don’t carry the same delusions of grandeur as their forbearers. The AAF is intended to supplement the NFL, not usurp it, and some games will even be broadcast on the NFL Network. In theory, it’s a relatively sensible endeavor—at least as sensible as something featuring a team called “The Salt Lake Stallions” can be.

The AAF has ten teams and, with the exception of the aforementioned Salt Lake squad, all of them are located in the southern part of the country. Franchises get dibs on players who went to colleges nearby, which ostensibly gives them a foothold in local markets. (For example, former Florida and Florida State stars are assigned to the Orlando Apollos). The first two games are on Saturday night, and CBS will be carrying television coverage throughout the ten-week regular season.

The AAF features a strong collection of vaguely familiar players and coaches. It might not be enough to make you buy Birmingham Iron season tickets, but the sight of Trent Richardson in pads may get you to stop flipping channels for a few minutes. The league allows its players to accept call-ups to the NFL (and vice versa), and San Diego Fleet quarterback Josh Johnson left his AAF team to start for Washington in key games during the NFC East playoff race.

Spring football leagues have a dire track record. The USFL was too ambitious and folded after three years, while the XFL barely made it through its flamboyantly stupid and concussion-filled inaugural season. The most intriguing thing about a spring football league isn’t whether or not it lasts, but rather what parts of it survive beyond its inevitable demise. Both the USFL and XFL featured innovations that would eventually be adopted by the NFL. The XFL introduced Skycam to the world, and the NFL cribbed its current instant replay review system from the USFL. With this in mind, here are a few AAF rule changes that may, one day, make it big.

No extra points.
Teams have to go for two. There are no kickoffs, either, and teams will instead get possession on their own 25-yard line. Kickers are barely involved. Speaking of which…

Onisde kicks are replaced by one fourth-and-12 play on the team’s own 28-yard line.
This is a terrific idea that I endorse wholeheartedly.

Overtime is kind of similar to the college system.
Except each team gets the ball on the 10-yard line and you aren’t allowed to kick field goals.

The play clock is 35 seconds instead of 40 seconds.
There will also be no TV timeouts. The aim is to keep games under two and a half hours.

There will be a “sky judge.” (This is not a euphemism for God.)
The officiating crew includes a ninth referee who sits in the booth and constantly reviews game action. The sky judge has the power to make calls or overturn penalties in case the on-field officials miss them. This is perhaps the AAF’s most intriguing wrinkle. Assuming it works as intended, it seems like it could be a common-sense solution to some of the NFL’s most glaring officiating issues. New Orleans would have certainly appreciated the presence of a sky judge during the NFC Championship game.

If you hate kickers and blown calls, the AAF might be for you. At least, until the NFL kicks off again and makes you totally forget about the existence of ALF or whatever it’s called.

A Look Back At the Mets AAA Affiliate Tidewater Tides Cache Translate Page
In 1969 the New York Mets changed their AAA affiliate from Jacksonville, where the Jacksonville Suns played,to Tidewater, Virginia.

Tidewater is located in the area of southeast Virginia (Norfolk & Portsmouth) & northeastern North Carolina . The area got its name because of the changing tides in local rivers, sounds & the Atlantic Ocean. The Tides would play at Metropolitan Memorial Park from 1970-1992.

The Tides became familiar to Mets fans of the seventies & eighties, as we knew that's where the players who hadn't been traded, or later signed as free agents, came from out of the minor leagues.

The Tidewater Tides got to the playoffs in their first season. After two years of losing in the first round, they got to the finals & became league champions in 1972 under Hank Bauer. Pitchers like Buzz Capra, Harry Parker (14 wins), Brent Strom, Tommy Moore (11 wins), Chuck Taylor (9 wins) & Barry Raziano (10 wins). Dave Schneck, Don Hahn, George Theodore & Jose Morales made up the offense.

In 1975 the Tides were league champs under manager Joe Frazier who would get the Mets big league managerial position the next year. His MLB results weren't as good as with the Tides. Players like Roy Staiger (81 RBIs) Brock Pemberton (.297 Ave) Bruce Boisclair, Mike Vail, Ron Hodges & Benny Ayala made up the offense.

Although they had limited MLB action, they never matched their minor league success. As was typical with Mets minor leagues, they had a soild pitching staff, consisting of Craig Swan (13 wins), Nino Espinosa (8 wins), Randy Sterling (10 wins), Dwight Bernard (9 wins) & Bill Laxton (11 wins).

Over the next six years, the Tides would make the playoffs three times but be eliminated in the first round each time, under managers Frank Verdi (twice) & former Met Jack Aker. Aker would skipper the team to league champs in 1982 & then as the team repeated in 1983, Davey Johnson took over the helm. Many of these players were part of the Mets 1986 Championship team & quality teams of the mid to late eighties.

Pitchers like Ron Darling (10 wins) Walt Terrell (10 wins) Tim Leary (8 wins) & a guy named Jeff Bittiger (12 wins) led the staff. On the field Darryl Strawberry, Wally Backman, Kevin Mitchell, Rafael Santana, Ron Gardenhire, Jose Oquendo, Mike Fitzgerald, with guys like Rusty Tillman & Mike Howard who never made it big in the majors.

In 1986 Mets coach Sam Perlozzo took over & as the big league team won the World Series, the Tides got to the playoffs but fell in the first round.

Mike Cubbage would take over & get to two finals in a row but lost both times. Cubbage was always being looked at as the Mets future manager, but it never turned out that way, except for a brief period in 1991.

In the early 1990's Steve Swisher managed for two years. Then Clint Hurdle, who became a very successful MLB manager, took over as the last skipper of the Tidewater Tides.

In 1992 a new ownership took over, the team moved to Harbor Park & for marketing, as well as political reasons, the changed their name to the Norfolk Tides. The next year they introduced the mascot, Rip Tide.

The Tides were the Mets AAA affiliate for 38 years, ending the relationship in 2006, when the Mets AAA team became the New Orleans Zephyers (2007-2008). They then moved to Buffalo (2009-2011) & then Las Vegas (2013-2018).

Exteriors Shotgun Shack Cache Translate Page

The 'Shotgun Shack' style of house was popular in the US for many years. These houses were built with the rooms and doors in a straight line, and the name 'shotgun' reputedly came from the fact that the occupant could open all the doors and fire a shotgun through the house without hitting anything. The whole house is raised 2-3 feet off the ground to avoid flooding, (reflecting its New Orleans origins).

The Shotgun Shack has a highly detailed exterior in wooden siding and stone, with a corrugated metal roof. It includes a wooden front porch with steps and railings, posable upper & lower sash windows with wooden storm shutters, and front and back doors, plus back steps. Extra details include water and gas pipes, roof aerial and chimney, cables and front porch light. The shack also has a full interior with 2 rooms and a small bathroom area, all with posable doors, wooden floorboards, and room lights with switches and cables. All body parts, including walls and roof, can be switched off/on for easy camera access.

The yard area (13.5 x 8.5 meters) is textured with scrub grass and bare earth, and is bordered at the back by a brick wall topped with cement coping, wooden fences on low brick walls at the sides, and a picket fence with a posable gate at the front. A flagstone path leads to the front porch, and a mailbox prop is included.

Bonus Figure - No porch would be complete without a rocking-chair, and this figure was based on a 1920s style chair. It has an ERC slider to produce an authentic rocking movement, and is textured in weathered wood.

The Shotgun Shack is a complete environment with lights included, and loads as a full scene with all props in place. It comes in Daz Studio or Poser versions with native geometry, materials and lighting.

Compatible with:
Daz Studio 2.3.146 or higher (Inc. Daz Studio 3.0)
Poser 6 or higher

Experience the thrill of the Mardi Gras carnival as seen only in New Orleans, the fascinating waterfront in enchanting Florida and the pathos of the homeless in Greater St. Louis in this fascinating video. The origins of Mardi Gras or "Fat Tuesday" can be traced to medieval Europe. Long before Mardi Gras was introduction to America, ancient Romans were celebrating Lupercalia, a circus like festival not entirely unlike the Mardi Gras we are familiar with today. When Rome embraced Christianity, Christian leaders thought it better to retain some of the pagan festivals instead of abolishing them completely. Thus, Mardi Gras was slated as a carnival time that preceded the penance of Lent, and justifiably labeled as a Christian festival.

It was the French explorer Iberville who brought Mardi Gras to America in 1699. Thus, Mardi Gras came to New Orleans through its French heritage in the same year. Throughout the years, the city of New Orleans added to the celebration by establishing krewes (organizations) which host parades and balls. The Carnival quickly became an exciting holiday for both children and adults.

Magic take advantage of Antetokounmpo's absence, rout Milwaukee Cache Translate Page

Jonathan Isaac scored 17 points and Nikola Vucevic and Terrence Ross each added 15 as the Orlando Magic cruised past Milwaukee 103-83 on Saturday night and snapped the Bucks' six-game winning streak.

The Bucks played without All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who sat out with right knee soreness after scoring 29 points and grabbing 17 rebounds in Milwaukee's win over Dallas on Friday night.

Aaron Gordon chipped in with 14 points as Orlando prevented Milwaukee form sweeping the three-game season series.

The Bucks, who have the league's best record at 41-14, lost for just the second time in 14 games.

The Magic led by as many as 25 in the fourth quarter and held the Bucks to their lowest scoring output of the season. Milwaukee's previous low was 87 in a loss to Miami on Dec. 22.

Eric Bledsoe had 19 points and Malcolm Brogdon 14 for Milwaukee, which struggled mightily throughout the game with their leader on the bench in street clothes. Milwaukee shot just 33 percent overall and made only six of 35 shots from 3-point range, tying their fewest number of threes made in a game this season.

The Bucks took an early 8-0 lead, but Orlando answered with a 20-4 run and held a 20-19 lead after the first quarter. Milwaukee shot just 30 percent in the period.

Orlando led 59-49 at the half, shooting 53 percent.

TIP-INS

Magic: Ross had 13 points in the second quarter. ... Rookie C Mo Bamba missed a fourth straight game with a stress fracture of his left tibia.

Bucks: Khris Middleton returned after sitting out Friday night to rest. ... With Antetokounmpo out, Tony Snell started. ... Scored a season-low 15 third-quarter points. The team's previous low was 17 on Oct. 22 against the Knicks.

GIANNIS SITS

Antetokounmpo missed his fourth game this season. "The soreness and the pounding of his body is pretty significant," coach Mike Budenholzer said. "I don't think it's a long-term thing, but I think a back-to-back, and the loads his puts himself through for us, he needs this."

MIROTIC ARRIVES

Nikola Mirotic, acquired from New Orleans in a three-team trade near the trading deadline, donned a Bucks uniform for the first time but didn't see action as he continues to recover from a right calf strain. The fifth-year forward missed his last seven games with the Pelicans and wasn't with the Bucks for their game at Dallas on Friday. "We were very, very excited for him to be in our gym this morning, shooting and working," Budenholzer said. "We'll just see how the next days go."

Magic: At Atlanta on Sunday

Bucks: At Chicago on Monday. Milwaukee has won four in a row against the Bulls.

Enjoyed it - I've warmed to Bert. Favourite was Cotton Pickers Congregation. This morning found me in an antiques centre rummaging through some 78s with one or two names I recognise from earlier posts. It surprised be how cheap they were but who plays them these days? CDs or YouTube are easier.

Le Garçon Scandaleux - Part 1 Cache Translate Page

Bonjour Y’all. I am thrilled to present the first installment of Le Garçon Scandaleux {The Scandalous Boy} a very special collaboration and co-production with PINK TV in France. There are very few places in the world that hold on to and are imbibed with the glorious history of its past. I was lucky to grow up in one such place, New Orleans, and ever since I was child, I was always told tantalizing and scandalous tales from our sister city — Paris. Paris, always the mysterious enchantress, beckons even the most cynical among us, and easily seduces the wide-eyed hopeless romantics like me. For all the times I have been there, I still cannot capture what it is about the city that makes it so special. All I know is when I am there, I feel ALIVE. Every part of me is engaged — sight, sound, taste and feel — all pulsating and tugging at every part of me; it’s an Orgy of my senses, and for a brief moment in time, all is right and good in the world. It is this “Sense of Place” that has brought me back to Paris again and again, and why CockyBoys has returned to shoot and play there over the years — but those trips have been brief and hurried at best. So, I was beyond thrilled when the team at PinkTV / PinkX asked if I was interested in collaborating with them to create a special project shot in Paris and using & supporting French talent from their Gay Porn Community. Both RJ and I jumped at the opportunity to creatively work with a team that steadfastly and lovingly supported our work over the years. Every time I come and enjoy the delights of Gay Paris, I am blown away by its playful and joyful sexuality and the absolute freedom and openness to sexual freedom! Naturally this was a perfect place to make a movie dedicated to inspiration it has given me and many others over the years. The following is a fun and sexy romp through Gay Paris, and I was thrilled to be able to shoot it and feature some of my favorite places in the city: Les Mots A La Bouche, Le Depot, SunCity Spa, Gym Louvre, and (of course) you know I love a good cemetery — so go to Père Lachaise Cemetery and say hello to Oscar. Keep an eye out for these places, and when you visit Paris go by and tell them CockyBoys sent you! Nous t’embrasse, JJ & RJ - Ben Masters, Carter Dane, Paul Delay & Sean Ford
