          Here's What Happens In The Original, Terrible 'Game Of Thrones' Pilot That Never Aired      Cache   Translate Page      

“One of the most painful experiences of my life.”

That’s how David Benioff once described seeing friends test-screen his and co-showrunner Dan Weiss’ original “Game of Thrones” pilot in 2010. After that viewing, more than 90 percent of the episode was supposedly reshot before it aired on HBO in April 2011, eventually leading to the phenomenon that the series is today.

But that first terrible, horrible, no good, very bad pilot ― called a “piece of shit” by the showrunners’ screenwriter friend Craig Mazin ― never saw the light of day. It became legend, something that could live only in Old Nan’s stories. Or so we thought.

It’s an oft-forgotten fact that George R.R. Martin, whose A Song of Ice and Fire novels serve as inspiration for “Game of Thrones,” has been depositing old copies of his writing to Texas A&M’s Cushing Memorial Library in College Station for more than two decades. He is said to have fallen in love with Cushing’s sci-fi collection and its archival system during visits to AggieCon as far back as the 1970s and decided to make the quiet spot in Texas a home for his massive catalog of original manuscripts.

The resulting collection at the library takes up multiple walls, the first of which is properly called the Wall. It’s a collection so vast, it’d make Samwell Tarly’s head spin, staffed by a team of dedicated librarians and professors who serve as a kind of Night’s Watch. Among the archive’s many files are manuscripts for the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, and ― as I learned during a trip to Texas over the summer ― a box containing a production draft of that painful “Game of Thrones” pilot. 

An early version of the pilot script supposedly surfaced online years ago, but the script’s authenticity was never officially verified. No one seemed to know how similar it was to the rejected pilot that HBO shot or how much it differed; scripts often go through various rewrites, so the mysterious version floating around online could have been from any phase of revisions. 

I had three days to spend in Texas, but it took only five minutes to realize the script online and the one at Cushing are different. There are reasons to believe that the version in Texas is similar to the pilot script that HBO shot: The production draft at Cushing is dated Oct. 22, 2009, right around the time the unaired pilot started filming. The Cushing script credits the unaired pilot’s original director, Tom McCarthy, who was later replaced in reshoots by Tim Van Patten. Plus, in terms of content, the Cushing script contains storylines that have been rumored to be in the unaired pilot script (as we’ll get into below) ― key story departures, dialogue alterations and location changes that cast the Seven Kingdoms in a different light.

“Game of Thrones” isn’t returning until April 2019, but fans are already bracing for a final season full of callbacks to early moments in the show, which will complete its eight-year “massive jigsaw puzzle,” as it was described by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime Lannister.

In advance of the season premiere, we exhaustively rummage through the secrets hidden in the pilot script from Martin’s collection, involving everything from an unreleased Cersei Lannister moment to a really drunk Jon Snow making a scene. Here’s what Westeros might have looked like if that “piece of shit” pilot had aired:


The Cersei scene that might ruffle some feathers

Let’s begin with a defining scene between King Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark in the Winterfell crypts. 

The scene that aired on HBO is slightly different from the scene in the Cushing script, but the gist is the same. Robert asks Ned to be his new Hand of the King, a position left open after Jon Arryn’s death. That’s when Robert places something small but highly symbolic on a statue of his onetime betrothed, Lyanna Stark: a feather. 

And that pretty much sums up the sequence you saw in Season 1:

But in the script found in the Cushing library, Queen Cersei plays a pivotal role in this exchange’s aftermath ― so much so that her involvement would have changed a Season 5 episode, the recent Season 8 teaser and possibly more. 

The following scene is written into the pilot script found at Cushing and involves Cersei visiting the crypts right before the feast at Winterfell:

Cersei exits the crypts, crosses the courtyard and walks into the antechamber between the kitchen and the Winterfell great hall. The celebration for the king’s arrival is underway, and servants are rushing past her with food. The queen’s handmaidens make adjustments to her outfit and remove her heavy fur.

Then Cersei reveals something she has inside her sleeve:

Why does it matter?

The episode that aired on HBO gave no indication that Cersei was aware of the feather Robert placed on Lyanna’s statue, let alone that she removed it to be burned.

Without this intervention, the feather goes on to play an important role in HBO’s recent Season 8 “Game of Thrones” teaser, falling to the ground as Jon Snow walks by and freezing when a wave of cold air rolls over it.

Even before that, the feather was featured in Season 5, Episode 4, “Sons of the Harpy,” when Sansa Stark visits the Winterfell crypts and comes across the token Robert placed on the statue years ago.

The series’ creators, Benioff and Weiss, acknowledged the feather’s station in the crypts to Making of Game of Thrones, explaining that, after all this time, the feather would surely still be there because there “hasn’t been a janitorial crew going down and vacuuming.”

“We thought it would be kind of a great thing,” they added, “to have Sansa wondering about it.” 

Why Sansa? And why a feather?

If you’ve been living under a Casterly Rock your entire life, you might’ve missed the curious role that birds play in “Game of Thrones.” There’s Varys’ spy network of “little birds,” there’s the High Sparrow, there’s the Three-Eyed Raven, and then there’s Sansa, who is often referred to as a “little bird” or “little dove.” These characters have a few things in common: They’re misunderstood, underestimated and often hold powerful information.

The feather could hint at how Lyanna, too, was a misunderstood character, another little bird. It could also serve as a symbol for her secret, her child, Jon Snow.

Now remember, in the Season 5 episode in which the feather reappears, viewers still think Lyanna had been kidnapped and raped by Prince Rhaegar. It hadn’t been revealed that she and Rhaegar were actually in love, married and had a baby — a secret that, with her dying breath, she made her brother Ned promise to keep.

The connection to Jon is reiterated in that Season 8 teaser when he looks back at the feather. Could Cersei’s burning the feather in the scrapped pilot script have been a hint at something else on the way? Will she do the same to Jon?

With Dany’s dragons flying around and Cersei having blown up part of King’s Landing with wildfire, it’s not much of a stretch to imagine a fiery run-in between Cersei and Jon in the future.

The cut feather scene is perhaps the first small hint of Cersei’s penchant for burning her enemies’ “cities to the ground,” as she likes to say. Considering HBO’s “Dragonstone” teaser from late in 2018, which shows a fire engulfing the signature Lannister lion, more flames are likely in the Lannisters’ future. And, just possibly, Jon Snow’s.


The much more consensual sex scene between Dany and Khal Drogo

One of the more substantial differences between the script at Cushing and the episode that aired on HBO can be observed in the writing of Daenerys Targaryen’s marriage consummation scene.

In the Cushing script, Dany has a lot more control. She smiles when she realizes Drogo can say only the word “no” in her language, she helps him take rings out of his hair and, most important, she ultimately consents to sex: 

This is far from the scene that aired on HBO, in which she cries as he undresses her, then has sex with her from behind. The more consensual framing of the scene is straight out of Martin’s books, which explains why it was included in an earlier version of the script; the pilot script at Cushing tends to hew closer to Martin’s words.

The version of the scene that aired, however, is traumatic. Daenerys is raped. Her relationship with Drogo eventually grows into love, but that doesn’t erase the fact that he raped her — and does so time and time again.

She addresses these rapes in her first conversation with Jon in Season 7, telling him, “I’ve been shamed and betrayed, raped and defiled. Do you know what kept me standing through all those years in exile? Faith, not in any gods, not in myths and legends. In myself, in Daenerys Targaryen.”

Why does it matter?

Though a consensual scene would have been less traumatic to watch, Daenerys actress Emilia Clarke spoke about her character’s rape to Glamour in 2016, explaining some possible reasoning behind the scene:

At the heart of it, we’re telling a story; you need that part of the story to feel empathy for Daenerys. You see her attacked by her brother, raped by her husband, and then going, “F―k all of you, I’m gonna rule the world.” That’s where we are now.

A rape scene is hardly necessary to build empathy for Dany’s plight, but as Clarke said, it underscores the terrors Dany overcame and her transformation from a scared, abused child into the khaleesi.

Somewhere between her rape and her decision to sleep with Jon, aka King of the Squats, in Season 7, a completely different Mother of Dragons has emerged.


The much more confusing sex scene between Jaime and Cersei

After watching the “Game of Thrones” premiere on HBO, fans are well aware that Jaime and Cersei are related. It’s a pretty pivotal plot point. Interestingly, one of the most prominent critiques lodged against the unaired pilot was that this info wasn’t clear enough. Early viewers didn’t know Jaime and Cersei Lannister are brother and sister.

Perhaps that’s why a scene featuring the incestuous siblings talking at King’s Landing was added to the episode that aired. In it, the two basically chat about how very, very related they are and how if anyone discovered their secret affair, their heads would be on spikes.

“As your brother, I feel it’s my duty to warn you, you worry too much,” Jaime explicitly states. This scene is not in the Cushing pilot script or the script previously available online, as io9 points out.

Keeping in mind that many viewers of the original pilot didn’t understand the Lannister twins’ relationship, a scene in the script at Cushing would have made it even more complicated. (Get out of here, Bran. You don’t want to see this.)

In all versions of the pilot, Bran Stark climbs the exterior of a tower at Winterfell and happens upon a window, through which he peeps a naked man and woman (Jaime and Cersei). In the script at Cushing, however, the encounter reads slightly differently, with Cersei telling Jaime to stop:

Why does it matter? 

In the episode that aired, Cersei objects to Jaime only after she spots Bran inadvertently being a little creep in the window.

In contrast, in Martin’s book and the script at Cushing, she protests much sooner. It’s confusing to Bran and possibly would’ve been confusing to TV viewers too.

Consider how this scene would have affected Jaime’s triumphant moment in Season 7, when he chooses to walk away from a power-hungry Cersei. Until that point, audiences are meant to believe he has always been under Cersei’s control; only then is he able to break free from her influence. The Cushing version of Jaime and Cersei’s sex scene could have made this harder to swallow.

In a show riddled with constant backstabbing, endless subplots and so many characters you remember as What’s His Name and Who’s Her Face, the less confusing a scene, the better.


The White Walkers who wouldn’t shut up

The Cushing pilot script opens a lot like the episode that aired: Three men from the Night’s Watch are tracking down wildlings when they are ambushed by White Walkers. Things don’t go well.

In the early pilot script, one of those men, Will, realizes the bodies of the dead wildlings have vanished and proceeds to climb a tree to get a better view. He does this right before the Walkers arrive, and his decision is a lifesaving one. In contrast to the aired episode, which shows a Walker sparing a member of the Watch from death for some unknown reason, it’s Will’s position in the tree that prevents him from being killed along with the others.

The White Walkers descend on the other two men, all the while speaking a language of ice:

Will stays in the tree. He’s going to let this one just play out.

Why does it matter?

At this point, White Walker dialogue is well documented. It just has never shown up on TV. However, it’s in the books, it’s referred to by Vanity Fair writer Joanna Robinson after she reviewed a number of “Game of Thrones” scripts, it shows up in the pilot script floating around online and it’s also in the one from Martin’s collection at Cushing.

I asked “Game of Thrones” language creator David Peterson about the White Walker dialogue, which he named Skroth, in a previously unpublished portion of a 2017 interview.

Reflecting on early plans for the White Walkers to speak, he told me he originally put something together for the opening scene of the show.

“I came up with basically some dialogue. I recorded it, and then I suggested to them, ‘Here’s how you might modify it digitally to give it a unique sound,’” he said. Peterson wanted the language to sound like it was described in Martin’s books, like “the cracking of ice on a winter lake.” Though, we imagine that could’ve possibly looked like a White Walker whose mouth is filled with pop rocks.

“It didn’t get used for the pilot, and then there was discussion they were thinking about using it in Season 2,” he said. “They said they tried it, and it just wasn’t working out, so they abandoned the idea.”

Peterson sent me a pre-effects example of the White Walker dialogue, which he previously played at conventions and gave us permission to include. Here’s an early version of what a White Walker would’ve sounded like:

At the time, he said, “Game of Thrones” sound designer Paula Fairfield was still hopeful they could use it one day, but that obviously hasn’t happened.

It’s not the only language casualty. Peterson said he created a full language for the Children of the Forest in Season 6, but for a variety of reasons (a desire to avoid the need for subtitles during action sequences, stunt people having difficulty with their lines), they “were either cut or shortened, and all of them were turned into English.”

“It was an idea. They tried it. It just didn’t work,” he said.


The time Jon Snow got wasted

In the “Game of Thrones” pilot that aired, Jon does not make an appearance in the memorable great hall scene. Instead, he stays outside, heeding Catelyn Stark’s wishes that Jon — who she and almost everyone else believes is Ned’s bastard son — not be present.

But in the pilot script at Cushing, he sits inside. He’s not at the highborn table, but he manages to have a drunken conversation with Benjen Stark in the great hall anyway.

Our guy is left alone to drink more wine and eventually causes a scene:

The scene in the Cushing pilot script is almost exactly the same as the scene in Martin’s novel A Game of Thrones. From the book:

He must have drunk more wine than he had realized. His feet got tangled under him as he tried to leave, and he lurched sideways into a serving girl and sent a flagon of spiced wine crashing to the floor. Laughter boomed all around him. 

Beyond the exclusion of Snow’s drunken escapade, the Cushing version of the sequence was drastically rearranged to form the scenes that aired on HBO. For example, in the episode that aired, the confrontation between Ned and Jaime in the great hall ends after Ned says, “I don’t fight in tournaments because when I fight a man for real, I don’t want him to know what I can do.”

Jaime replies, “Well said.”

But in the Cushing pilot script, as well as the one that has been online, the moment continues long enough for Jaime to remind Ned of how his brother and father were killed:

It continues:

A flashback of Ned’s brother Brandon being killed also purportedly existed in an early version of the filmed pilot (a screenshot exists online), but this is not included in the script at Cushing (though it could have fit in around this conversation). 

The Cushing version of the scene goes even further, with Ned leaving and Tyrion, who overheard everything, telling Jaime, “If it came down to it, Brother, I’d bet on you ― but I wouldn’t bet much.” Tyrion then downs another tankard of wine, realizes he drank too much, staggers out of the hall and eventually talks to Jon outside.

Why does it matter?

While it would’ve been fun to see the future King in the North get shitfaced (you know nothing about holding your alcohol, Jon Snow), it’s so much extra character interaction to digest that you could be left feeling as dizzy as Tyrion. 

There are a few moments that are really important from the Winterfell feast scenes, and Jon’s conversations with Tyrion and Benjen are at the forefront. The conversation with Tyrion is referred to in Season 7, when Tyrion writes Jon a letter that includes “All dwarves are bastards in their father’s eyes.” It’s a line Tyrion says in their first chat, and it seemingly convinces Jon he’ll be safe when he travels to see Daenerys.

Of course, with Benjen he talks about going to serve in the Night’s Watch at the Wall, which he clearly does and then lives happily ever after. 

The other character interactions, while entertaining, could have distracted from the truly important moments, so let’s all pour one out for Jon’s long-lost wasted scene.


The weird Catelyn who wanted Sansa to be queen

Catelyn and Daenerys were originally played by different actors — Jennifer Ehle and Tamzin Merchant, respectively. Before Michelle Fairley took on the role of Catelyn, the character’s personality was a lot different too.

For example, in a bedroom scene in the pilot script, Catelyn urges Ned to accept Robert’s offer of betrothal between Joffrey and Sansa and to head south with the king.

Maester Luwin then enters with the note from her sister Lysa, saying that the Lannisters murdered her husband, Jon Arryn. Ned has no choice but to take up his old friend Robert’s request to be the new Hand of the King and go to King’s Landing to figure out what’s going on.

In the episode that aired, however, Catelyn urges Ned to stay in the North, claiming that she’ll confront Robert and tell him, “Listen, fat man. You are not taking my husband anywhere. He belongs to me now.”

You tell ’em, Cat.

Why does it matter?

In terms of the differences between the pilot script at Cushing and the episode that aired, Catelyn is my pick for most improved character. Benioff and Weiss were smart to realize that fans have pages and pages to get to know the Catelyn in the books but only a few scenes to get to know her on the show. The Cushing script might have made Catelyn seem a bit title obsessed, like Season 1 Sansa, who was, objectively, the worst.

Just ask Season 1 Arya Stark.

Instead, the showrunners chose to lean into the image of the Stark matriarch as a protective mother and wife who would later fend off an assassin in an effort to save her injured Bran.

It’s also worth noting that after reading Lysa’s letter in the Cushing script, Catelyn says to Ned:

In the episode that aired, Catelyn stops after saying Jon Arryn was murdered by the Lannisters. She doesn’t say, “By the queen.”

John Standing, the actor who plays the dearly departed Jon Arryn, once said the original pilot included a “lunatic” scene in which Cersei watches his character die. Though this scene isn’t included in the script at Cushing, a line about Jon Arryn being killed by the queen paves the way for the bit to have been added later.


The time Joffrey Baratheon, First of his Name, was a jerk from the start

When “Game of Thrones” begins, you don’t realize Joffrey is quite as turdish as he is until Episode 2, when Tyrion slaps him silly for not going to the Starks to offer sympathies after Bran’s fall. But in the pilot script at Cushing, you get the impression that Joffrey is a walking, talking pile of human excrement right away.

At a training session between the Lannisters and Starks, Bran has just finished pummeling Tommen Baratheon with a wooden sword, and Ser Rodrik, Winterfell’s master-at-arms, asks Robb Stark and Joffrey if they’d like to go another round. Robb’s in, but Joffrey complains that he’s “tired of swatting at Starks with a play sword.” He suggests “live steel,” and Rodrik is just not cool with that.

While the pilot script gives Robb this early interaction with Joffrey, it omits many other scenes that made their way to air — the Winterfell scene where Bran is learning archery with his family, the scene in which Sansa and Arya are practicing their stitching, the scene in which Sansa begs Catelyn to let her go to King’s Landing and the infamous shaving scene in which the Stark boys stand around shirtless and flexing.

Why does it matter?

The Joffrey moment could have added tension later in the series — for instance, during the War of the Five Kings skit at Joffrey’s wedding, which features someone riding around with a wolf’s head to represent the decapitated Robb. But it seems likely that some minor scenes like this were cut in order to make room for more vital moments, such as getting to know the Starks. And, frankly, more Starks and less Joffrey sounds like a winning formula, bare-chested flexing and all.

The final takeaways

In addition to the cut scenes, there were quite a few subtle differences between the script available online and the one from Martin’s official collection in Texas. In the version online, Tyrion pets the Stark direwolf Ghost, his brothel scene takes place at King’s Landing (not in the North), and there’s a long scene meant to describe a now-discarded title sequence.

But none of this happens in the script at the Cushing library. (In fact, as far as the credits go, the script there describes an opening sequence with just the words “TITLE CARD: GAME OF THRONES.”)

There are some less significant but amusing details sandwiched into the script at Cushing too. Ned, who’s about the grimmest dude around, makes a joke in the crypts:

The line was taken out and given to Jaime in Season 1, Episode 3: 

Various shooting locations changed as well. For instance, Dany’s wedding was originally filmed in Morocco and featured a cameo from Martin himself as a Pentoshi (something that could have easily fit into the Cushing script, since it mentions “Merchants of Pentos” gathered for the ceremony). However, when Clarke was brought in as the replacement Daenerys, the subplot was altered and reshot in Malta.

The Cushing script alone doesn’t reveal exactly why the original pilot was such a “massive problem,” as Mazin put it. Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow, touched on that version’s “mistakes,” telling The Guardian, “It didn’t look right, didn’t feel right.” The devil is likely in the scene execution details, which we might never see, although he said the showrunners would threaten to release the pilot on YouTube when he pissed them off. Perhaps the early drunk scenes weren’t the King in the North’s finest hour.

Still, reading the script at Cushing, I got a sense of how even small changes would have led to a vastly different show. One of the most interesting aspects for me ― a moment that would’ve changed the way some future “Game of Thrones” scenes unfold and added some foreshadowing ― was Cersei’s cut scene. As the adage goes, where there’s smoke, there’s ... Cersei trying to light something on fire.

Actress Sally Fraser who appeared on television and in numerous films died in Harrison, Idaho on January 13, 2019. She became best known for appearing in low-budget science fiction films of the 1950s. Born in Williston, North Dakota on December 12, 1932, Fraser moved to Southern California with her family after spending a few years in Minneapolis. She was spotted after singing on a local TV show and was encouraged to take drama lessons and eventually gained experience in stage plays. On television she appeared opposite Tyler MacDuff in the episode "The Saga of Clement O'Toole" of the western series, Annie Oakley. She also appeared on Guy Madison's series, The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok. She was in the 1954 TV presentation of A Christmas Carol starring Fredric March, in the role of "Belle, sweetheart of Scrooge's youth, and as the Spirit of Christmas Past."

On May 27, 1954, Fraser was part of the Anderson family in a pilot for the television version of Father Knows Best. The pilot was broadcast as an episode of Ford Television Theatre. Fraser played the older daughter but (as with all others in the family except Robert Young) was not cast as part of the regular series.

In 1955, Fraser (along with Jil Jarmyn) completed two pilot episodes of Behind the Scenes (not to be confused with a latter Public Broadcasting Service series of the same name), a series about the "adventures of two girls trying for movie careers in Hollywood."

Fraser eventually became typecast in low budget 1950s sci-fi films. She played a wife possessed by aliens in the Roger Corman film “It Conquered the World” (1956), the sister of the titular monster in “War of the Colossal Beast” (1958), and a mother protecting her baby in “Earth vs. the Spider” (1958). She was briefly onscreen as the United Nations receptionist who introduces Cary Grant's character to Philip Ober's Lester Townsend in Hitchcock's “North by Northwest” also appeared in “Giant from the Unknown” (1958).

She continued to work on television and the stage into the 1960s until she decided to retire to raise her family. Fraser moved to Harrison, Idaho in the 1980s and lived on a ranch with her husband Allan Johnson.

Beza kokosowa:

Sposób przygotowania:

Masło ucieramy z cukrem pudrem, dodajemy żółtka oraz jajka. Do jednolitej masy dodajemy mąkę przesianą z proszkiem do pieczenia. Mieszamy do połączenia i wykładamy na blaszkę. Ciasto smarujemy dżemem, posypujemy wiśniami i rodzynkami.

The May Government’s recognition of the American lackey, Juan Guaidó, as ‘interim president’ of Venezuela is the latest episode in what some British politicians still shamefully call the “special relationship” with the USA. The weakness of the British Government makes this meaningless gesture, which was given in the hope of future reward from the Trump administration, pointless. But crawling to the Americans comes as second nature to those sections of the ruling class who believe that their global interests are best preserved through the might of US imperialism.
Though the Trump administration has widened existing divisions within America’s ruling circles over immigration and minority rights, the entire American ruling class wants to establish US hegemony over the world. What divides them is how to achieve it.
Democrat leaders still believe in the ‘new world order’ although they now prefer to call it ‘globalisation’. Trump, on the other hand, represents circles who want to cut back US military expenditure in Europe and north-east Asia so that they can concentrate on controlling the global energy market by taking over the entire Middle East and restoring US imperialism’s hegemony over south and central America. This is why they’re itching to get their greedy hands on Venezuela's vast oil reserves, the biggest in the world.
When it suits them American, British and Franco-German imperialists will bang the drum of “human rights”. So reading from the American script the Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, says that: “The people of Venezuela have suffered enough. It is time for a new start, with free and fair elections in accordance with international democratic standards. The oppression of the illegitimate, kleptocratic Maduro regime must end. Those who continue to violate the human rights of ordinary Venezuelans under an illegitimate regime will be called to account. The Venezuelan people deserve a better future.”
The usual lies. But few are taken in these days. Attempts to build another “international coalition” to justify American military intervention and “regime change” have failed at the United Nations and the Organisation of American States. Ten members of the European Union have refused to endorse Juan Guaidó’s empty claim and Turkey has broken ranks with NATO to back the elected Maduro government that is also supported by Russia, People’s China, India, Cuba and Democratic Korea, as well as most of the Third World.
Those in favour of imperialist aggression are the most aggressive and greedy sections of the capitalist and landowning class. They looted and enslaved Africa and Asia in the 19th century, killing millions on their way. They are the people who sent millions to their deaths in two world wars to preserve and increase their fortunes.
They started the Korean War and the American interventions in Indo-China during the Cold War. These are the people who brought death and destruction in the name of “regime change” in Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya. They are the ones behind the sectarian gunmen who tried the same in Syria.
They are the kind who live the life of Roman Emperors in their grand houses whilst workers slave in their factories for pennies and die broken and destitute in the slums of the great cities of the imperialist heartlands. Now they want to push the clock back in Venezuela.
The governance of Venezuela is a matter for the Venezuelan people alone to determine. They’re going to fight to defend their revolution, We must stand by them and the legitimate government of the Bolivarian republic.

Sem Rasidnak, sem Esőcseppnek nem jött álom a szemére csak forgolódtak, a gondolatok csak úgy kavarogtak a fejükben. A félelem befészkelte magát az agyukba, már nem voltak azok a határozott magabiztos fiatalok többé. A reggel gyorsan eljött, indultak legeltetni, velük ment Gaspar is. A nap az utazás jegyében telt el. A félelmük csökkent, kezdtek bizakodni az út sikerében. Esőcsepp arra gondolt, ha Gaspar képes volt hazajutni, akkor ők ketten, a biztonságosabb úton, csak el jutnak Európába.
Egy reggel apjuk ennyit mondott: - ma utoljára mentek legeltetni, búcsúzzatok el a tájtól, mert lehet, hogy soha nem látjátok viszont a szülőföldeteket. A két fiatal megilletődve indult el, Esőcsepp a torkában gombócot érzett, de nem mert sírni, ám kint a völgyben, mikor egyedül volt, csak úgy rázta a zokogás. Nézte ezeket a kopár hegyeket, képtelen volt másféle tájat elképzelni, a szeme ezt szokta meg. A szíve elszorult, bármennyire űzte a vágy az új világ felé, érezte, hogy az itt hagyott élete lesz számára örökre, a gondtalan gyermekkor boldog emléke. Este mindketten kimentek a temetőbe, elbúcsúztak a halottaiktól, kérve őket, hogy segítsék az útjukat. Másnap pakoltak, készülődtek, Gasparral vitatkoztak, kérdéseikkel ostromolták. A következő napon, már pirkadatkor talpon volt mindenki, a tevét felmálházták, Rasid fogta a kantárját, Esőcsepp lehajtott fejjel állt a tevéje mellett. Elsőnek Marad és felesége lépett oda hozzá, megölelték, Marad csak annyit mondott - ha boldogtalan leszel, gyere haza, itt mindig lesz számodra hely. Majd Gáspártól búcsúztak el, mindent megköszönve. Végül apjuk állt előttük, Esőcsepp látta, hogy a szeméből folyik a könny.
- Vigyázzatok egymásra, soha ne felejtsétek, hogy az életetek a legfontosabb. Az ételnél mindig fontosabb a víz, ha gyorsan kell cselekedni, a szívetekre hallgassatok, ha terveztek, hallgassátok meg egymás véleményét és az eszetek diktáljon.

     Skazani na cierpienie

Szacunek i miłość, na to zasługuje każdy człowiek. Jednak historia już wielokrotnie pokazała,  jak łatwo ludzie zapominali  o tych wartościach, bądź nawet nie brali ich pod uwagę. W tym poście chciałabym  opowiedzieć  o losie osób chorych psychicznie w okresie od XV  do  XX wieku. Był  to czas niesprawiedliwy i okrutny, ponieważ chorzy byli umieszczani w szpitalach psychiatrycznych,  w których panowały bardzo trudne warunki bytowe. Pracownicy obchodzili się z pacjentami brutalnie, często traktując  ich jak zwierzęta. Wydawałoby się, że szpital powinien zapewniać bezpieczeństwo i spokój, tymczasem był koszmarem, a nawet piekłem dla wielu chorych.
Należy pamiętać o niskim poziomie medycyny w poprzednich wiekach. Dlatego jedną z najpopularniejszych metod leczenia chorych psychicznie była terapia rotacyjna. Polegała ona na usadzeniu chorego na krześle, które następnie unoszono na hakach podczepionych do sufitu, wprawiając krzesło w ruch obrotowy. Pacjent mógł obrócić się nawet sto razy w ciągu minuty. To powodowało wymioty, które miały oczyścić organizm, miały również – podobno  -  właściwości terapeutyczne. Wierzono także, że choroba opuszcza organizm dzięki spuszczaniu krwi. Do tego sposobu leczenia stosowano pijawki i okaleczano pacjentów. Pod koniec XIX wieku często do leczenia wykorzystywano hydroterapię, która polegała na zanurzeniu chorych w wannie z lodowatą bądź bardzo gorącą wodą. Pacjenci byli przywiązywani do ścian i unieruchamiani za pomocą łańcuchów. Znęcano się nad nimi, torturowano i bito, a oni czuli przerażenie. Bolesne i okrutne metody leczenia były nieskuteczne, pacjenci czuli się po nich osłabieni, a ich stan psychiczny pogarszał się. Terapie, które miały poprawić stan ich zdrowia, często były przyczyną śmierci chorych.
W szpitalach psychiatrycznych nie dbano o czystość, pacjenci żyli w brudnych pomieszczeniach. Nie mogli też liczyć na odpowiednią dietę, więc często byli niedożywieni, a nawet głodzeni. W niektórych ośrodkach pozwalano na ich zwiedzanie i oglądanie chorych, co przypominało wycieczkę po zoo, a sami pacjenci czuli się zwierzęta w klatkach.

Wśród bezlitosnych sadystów, którzy znęcali się nad pacjentami, pracowali także pełni empatii i zrozumienia lekarze. Zmienili oni życie wielu chorych, a  jednym z tych altruistów był Philippe Pinel. Ten francuski lekarz, żyjący w epoce oświecenia, jako pierwszy zaczął godnie traktować chorych psychicznie. Uważał, że każdemu człowiekowi przysługują te same prawa -  do wolności oraz decydowania o swoim życiu. Przyczynił się do powstania rehabilitacji społecznej, wprowadzając  terapię zajęciową  i aktywność fizyczną w leczeniu pacjentów.
Ludzie cierpiący na choroby psychiczne nie wybrali swojego losu. Nie mieli wpływu na to, co dzieje się z ich psychiką. Niektórzy zostali skazani na ten ciężki los od urodzenia, inni przeżyli tragedie, które zmieniły ich na zawsze. Osoby z zaburzeniami psychicznymi cierpią na stany lękowe, depresję, napady paniki, fobie, bezsenność, doświadczają urojeń i omamów. Inaczej  niż ludzie zdrowi postrzegają świat,  który jest dla nich bardziej brutalny i trudniejszy. Dlatego zasługują na szczególną opiekę i troskę. Jednak zamiast tego  spotykali się z odrzuceniem przez rodzinę i przyjaciół, a potem z nieludzkim traktowaniem przez pracowników szpitali. Stali się bezbronnymi istotami wobec bestialskich katów takich jak Henry Cotton, John Haslam czy Bryan Crowther. Na pacjentach przeprowadzano wiele eksperymentów, poddawano ich torturom, traktowano jak zwierzęta. Znęcanie się psychiczne i fizyczne nad chorymi doprowadzało do ich śmierci. Czym się kierowali  ich dręczyciele?  Może poczucie władzy i przewagi nad słabszymi? Wtedy tacy ludzie wykorzystują innych, łamią ich prawa i powoli zapominają o człowieczeństwie.
Mój post jest nieprzyjemny, ale taki właśnie miał być. Podjęłam się tego tematu, ponieważ chciałam pokazać niezasłużony los osób cierpiących na choroby psychiczne w dawnych czasach. Mam nadzieję, że ten tragiczny rozdział historii nigdy się nie powtórzy.

Last night No. 9 Ohio State shelled the net but struggled to solve Beaver goalie Lauren Bench. Following the game, Nadine Muzerall remained positive about her team’s effort, saying the same game on another night would have brought a victory. Looks like the Buckeye coach was right.

On Saturday afternoon the Bucks squared off with Bemidji State once again. They opened up another barrage on Bench. This time they struck five times and chased the BSU netminder from the game. 

"Actually we had ten more shots attempted today compared to yesterday with a total of 70," said Muzerall. "They were bound to get through and on net. We were just plugging away."

Rebecca Freiburger fired home the first Buckeye goal less than a minute into the game. Charly Dahlquist followed with her eleventh tally of the season. It would turn out to be the game winner.

Bemidji cut Ohio State’s lead to 2-1 late in the first period. That margin held through a scoreless second period. Then Bucks seized absolute control of the game in the final frame. 

Dahlquist crushed her second goal of the game less than a minute in. Top sniper Emma Maltais converted a penalty shot. Freshman Sophie Jaques polished off the Beavers with a power play strike to seal a 5-1 OSU victory.

"I’m just really glad that we won a must-win game," Muzerall admitted. "We’ve lost quite a few games this year when we completely outplayed our opponent. Coming in, I didn’t question if we would have the effort and control the game, but you never know how the outcome’s going to end. It was very nice to see us take the W." 

Buckeye goalie Amanda Zeglen made 18 saves to collect her fourth win of the season. Today’s start marked her sixth appearance in net this year. She owns a 4-1-0 record along with a 2.70 GAA and .890 save percentage. 

Today’s victory brings Ohio State’s overall record to 18-12-0. The Bucks are 12-10-0-0 in the WCHA. They have a bye next week before heading out to finish the regular season at No. 2 Wisconsin on February 22-23.

"We’re just going to take the time of rest and recovery," said Muzerall. "We always think hockey, hockey, hockey but they’re student athletes too and they’re busy and they’re stressed out and it’s midterms. We want to make sure they’re recovered and fully energized by the time we take off to Madison."

Balzan FC will be sending young players Neil Frendo and Zak Grech for a loan spell to Serbian side OFK Belgrade, the Times of Malta can reveal. Grech, an 18-year-old defender, and midfielder Frendo, 19, are two promising young players who have represented Malta at youth level over the years. Grech and Frendo are due to leave Malta on Friday on their way to the Serbian capital where they are expected to join OFK Belgrade on loan until the end of the season. “He aquí que veo a mi padre, he aquí que veo a mi madre, a mis hermanas y mis hermanos. He aquí que veo el linaje de mi pueblo hasta sus principios. Y he aquí que me llaman, me piden que ocupe mi lugar entre ellos, en los atrios de Valhalla, el lugar donde viven los valientes para siempre.”

Un viejo adagio afirma que la Historia la escriben los vencedores. Normalmente esto suele ser normal, sobre todo en el caso de los vikingos. Hay que recordar que en la Edad Media, y sobre todo en su comienzo, los guardianes del saber eran los monjes. Por lo tanto si estos fueron atacados de continuo por razias vikingas es normal que en sus escritos estos quedaran inmortalizados como demonios salidos del infierno que venían a exterminar a la humanidad. Un ejemplo de ello es lo que reflejó uno de los monjes que consiguió escapar del saqueo de la abadía de Lindesfarne en el 793: “Este año los bárbaros llegaron del norte con sus barcos. Eran como punzantes avispas, se propagaban en todas direcciones como horrendos lobos, devastando, robando, saqueando y matando no solo animales sino también curas, monjes y monjas. Llegaron a Lindesfarne, segaron todo rastro de vida, profanaron los altares y se llevaron los tesoros del sagrado recinto”.  Ese año fue el acto presencial de aquellos guerreros que venían de las frías brumas del norte. Y por eso quedaron retratados de esa manera, como si ninguna otra civilización hubiera cometido actos de pillaje. Ello hizo que siempre les quedara el estigma de seres violentos y sin pasión ávidos de sangre y riqueza. Tiempo después el Romanticismo dulcificó su imagen y poco a poco con el paso de los años historiadores y arqueólogos han ido sentando las bases de un nuevo relato vikingo, más actual, en la que las ansias guerreras y comerciales se unificaron mostrándonos una realidad distinta a la que nos habían acostumbrado los temerosos monjes. Así pues les animo a acercarse de nuevo a la historia vikinga a través del libro Breve Historia de la Mitología Nórdica, escrito por Carlos Díaz Sánchez (Nowtilus, 2018) con el que podrán degustar la rica cultura de estos pueblos norteños y sus fascinantes mitos que tanto han influido en civilización actual.

La idea de los dioses y su posterior conversión en religión institucionalizada no es un proceso que se cree de la nada. Para ello ha de haber una sociedad organizada que fomente el proselitismo entre sus ciudadanos. Carlos Díaz Sánchez, en su libro, tras iniciar al lector en la historiografía nórdica lo lanza a conocer cómo vivían los vikingos en sus asentamientos y cuáles fueron los adelantos marítimos que les afianzaron como señores de los mares en los primeros siglos de la Edad Media. Nos informa de cómo estaba estructurada la sociedad entre señores, las personas libres o bondi, y los esclavos tomados o bien en los saqueos propiciados en lejanas tierras o bien por antiguos señores que habían caído en desgracia por cuestiones económicas o legales. Los vikingos no decidían los hechos de la vida a tontas y a locas sino que se organizaban en torno al thingo asamblea plenaria en donde se tomaban diferentes tipos de decisiones ya fuera para planificar nuevos emplazamientos o saber que rutas marítimas tomar para buscar riquezas a través del comercio o del pillaje. El autor también nos informa de cómo eran los centros religiosos, la mayoría en bosques sagrados y como era el culto a la muerte que profesaban, como por ejemplo la famosa ceremonia de quemar a un jefe determinado en una especie de barco para que fuera directamente a la morada de los dioses.  Y, finalmente, en este punto, antes de adentrarnos en el mundo del más allá, Carlos Díaz Sánchez nos aclara como eran los tipos de barcos que surcaban los mares en pos de fortuna. La orografía del terreno escandinavo, montañoso y en muchos casos helado, propició que esta civilización se lanzara al mar, a conquistarlo con la intención, como ya he indicado antes, de comerciar y saquear. Para ello crearon uno de los símbolos más importantes de su cultura: el temible navío vikingo. Alargados, maniobreros, prácticos y desmontables para usarse tanto en mar como en ríos, los distintos barcos que usaban se adaptaban a diferentes usos fuera cual fuera la latitud. Por ejemplo tenemos el langskip (barco largo, también conocido como skeid) que usaban en acciones de guerra y saqueos rápidos. En cambio para cuestiones comerciales de larga distancia tenemos los llamados Knörr que tenían una gran capacidad de carga y material. Esta disparidad de tipos de embarcación nos lleva a pensar de nuevo en la concepción de vida de un vikingo, es decir, en que no eran seres infernales salidos de lo más hondo del infierno que no paraban en el hogar y que solo vivían para degollar a otras personas. El hombre del norte era algo más: granjero, comerciante y guerrero sin par.

A partir de este punto es cuando ya nos adentramos en el meollo del libro: la religión y mitología de los pueblos nórdicos. Ésta ha influido tanto en el acerbo cultural europeo que hoy día sigue presente en nuestra cultura. Podemos leer sobre ella en la literatura, como por ejemplo en la obra de Tolkien en el Señor de los Anillos; deleitarnos los oídos con su belleza en las operas de Wagner; o disfrutar con la espectacularidad de sus mitos en las propias películas y cómics de Marvel. Esta Breve Historia que les presentó nos sumerge de lleno en lo más profundo de esta mitología, desde sus orígenes al crearse el universo en el Ginnungagap hasta el ocaso de los dioses con la llegada del Ragnarök. La religión nórdica se vio fuertemente influenciada por la llegada de tribus germánicas a la península de Jutlandia (hoy Dinamarca) y con ellos trajeron un sin fin de mitos y dioses que cristalizaron en aquellas latitudes tan frías. Carlos Díaz nos enseña cómo se crearon los dioses y los humanos, los nueve mundos anudados al Ygdrassil en donde deidades, humanos o gigantes, luchaban y convivían por la eternidad y donde moraba cada uno de ellos.

Los vikingos creían que los dioses intervenían en todas las decisiones que tomaban y por ello los invocaban continuamente. Dioses y hombres se necesitaban, unos porque tenían que reafirmar su autoridad mientras que los segundos debían agradarles porque soñaban con entrar en el Valhalla, al eterno banquete donde los aguerridos guerreros combatirían por toda la eternidad. A través de las sagas y eddas sabemos las andanzas de los dioses principales, ya fueran de la casta de los Aesir o los Vanir, y disfrutaremos de sus hazañas e historias. Odín el todopoderoso, el fuerte Thor con su martillo Mjollnir, el sacrificio del gigante Ymir, la belleza de Freya, la carga de las valquirias, o las ocurrencias del escurridizo Loki, son solo un ejemplo de las mil y una gestas que nos trae este libro y que desde la antigüedad vikinga nos siguen encandilando. Igualmente sabremos de las leyendas claves que corrían entre los fiordos y conoceremos las increíbles aventuras de Beowulf y su lucha contra Grendel o la espectacular hazaña que mantuvo Sigurd (Sigfrido) contra el temible dragón.
Breve Historia de la Mitología Nórdica, es un apasionante viaje a los mitos vikingos. Unos mitos que tanto han influenciado la cultura actual (si incluso el último God of War está ambientado en ellos) Sabremos de dioses, brindaremos por las hazañas de sus héroes y temeremos la llegada del Ragnarök acompañado del temible aullido de Fenrir el lobo. Así pues les animo a adentrarse en un libro que nos da una nueva visión del mundo vikingo, más equilibrado y justo en el modo en que estos contemplaban la vida y sus divinidades. ¡Skol!

A continuació teniu un resum de la segona part del ple ordinari de gener, amb les respostes de l’equip de govern als nostres precs i preguntes.


1.- Informació de Batlia.

- S’informa de la notificació d’un auto i dues sentències.

2.- Dació de compte de resolucions de Batlia.

- 7 nomenaments de lletrat i procurador per diversos contenciosos administratius.

3.- Precs i preguntes.

1.- Al passeig Saralegui 44 abans hi havia un convent de monges, i ara hi ha una escola concertada i un restaurant. S’han emès els corresponents rebuts d’IBI, taxes, arbitris, etc d’acord amb la nova situació?

El batle dona per fet que és així, però en cap moment ha afirmat que ho hagi confirmat, cosa ben senzilla de fer i que ve a ser la seva obligació i la forma correcta de respondre a una pregunta registrada amb dies d’antelació

2.- Beneficia d’alguna manera als treballadors pollencins el premi del SICTED que TOURESPAÑA ha concedit a Pollença? No pensa aquest equip de govern que així comes dediquen recursos i esforços a això, se’n podrien dedicar a la millora de les condicions laborals dels treballadors del sector turístic? Tenen cap proposta d’actuació?

Diu el regidor que el sistema també beneficia al treballador perquè s’implanten sistemes de qualitat i s’estableixen protocols d’actuació que garanteixen una estabilitat i una fiabilitat, i que les empreses compromeses amb sistemes de qualitat també ho són també amb els seus els equips de feina i els seus treballadors.

Són unes paraules molt boniques però que en realitat no sabem en quins beneficis concrets es reflecteixen.

Pel que fa a la millora de les condicions laborals, diuen que l’Ajuntament no hi té competències, sinó que són els sindicats els que negocien els convenis amb les patronals, però va recordar que el conveni a les Illes és dels millors. I a més l’any passat es va aprovar un nou conveni que suposa entre d’altres un augment d’un 17% d’augment salarial fent que es reparteixi un poc més la riquesa.

Sense negar que la firma del nou conveni sigui beneficiosa, escoltant al regidor sembla que els treballadors del sector a les Illes, i per descomptat del nostre municipi siguin uns privilegiats.  

I sobre la proposta d’actuació, diuen que aquesta està emmarcada en el PDTM (Pla de desenvolupament turístic municiapl), al qual hi ha un capítol sencer dedicat a la formació, que segons ells és la millor eina que li poden donar al treballador per millorar a la feina.

Si algú llegeix el PDTM de Pollença, veurà que la figura del treballador i la millora de les seves condicions, no en són cap prioritat.

3.- Ens poden informar de en quin estat està l’execució de l’ordre d’execució dictada a la propietat de la Fàbrica de Can Morató?

Presentaren el projecte d’obres per complir l’ordre d’execució que es va enviar tant a la Direcció General de Recursos Hídrics com al Departament de Patrimoni. De Recursos Hídrics s’informà favorablement i dia 21 de gener han rebut de Patrimoni l’autorització al projecte i ara està en procés de comunicació als propietaris perquè procedeixin a executar-lo.

Esperem que així sigui i el més aviat possible. Per desgràcia a aquest ple no s’ha aprovat el Catàleg de Protecció d’edificis d’interès històric, artístic, arquitectònic i paisatgístic del terme municipal que establia la inclusió de la Fàbrica.

4.- Han començat a fer passes per comprar cases, edificis o solars per incrementar el patrimoni municipal del sòl i dedicar-ho a habitatge protegit? Què han fet?

Segons ells l’ajuntament no pot anar comprant de qualsevol manera i que ho ha de fer mitjançant concurs públic. S’han posat en contacte amb l’IBAVI, que els ha explicat com fer-ho, i els ha enviat exemples de plecs per fer aquests concursos d’adquisició d’immobles, i de quina manera es poden acceptar oferiments directes.

Amb el poc temps que queda, i amb l’interès que ha mostrat l’equip de govern per aquest tema sembla difícil veure que es farà alguna cosa en aquest sentit. Almenys ja saben com fer-ho.

5.- Poden informar sobre si les empreses elèctriques han respost a la petició d’informació per part de l’Ajuntament sobre el consum elèctric dels habitatges de Pollença? Quines seran les seves properes actuacions i amb quins terminis?

Han contestat dues empreses, Iberdrola i Viesgo (Repsol). Iberdrola no en té, però Viesgo si que en té bastantes. Donaran 10 dies més per veure si contesten les altres.

Estarem atents a aquestes respostes, i en cas de no produir-se demanarem a l’equip de govern actuï en conseqüència. I en cas de produir-se, es disposarà una radiografia molt completa sobre els edificis buits de llarga durada al municipi, i es podran executar mesures per fer que aquests entrin al mercat de lloguer, i millorin la situació de l’habitatge.

6.- Poden informar sobre en quin estat es troba el catàleg de camins?

Sobre els camins que estaven en investigació, una vegada fet l’informe del Consell, els serveis jurídics municipals consideraren que s’havien de comunicar als “propietaris” de cada un dels camins, i així s’ha fet, obrint-se un període d’al·legacions que ha acabat fa poc, i ara s’estan resolent. La idea és que una vegada resoltes, s’aprovi definitivament.

Esperem que aquestes al·legacions es resolguin ràpidament i que abans d’acabar la legislatura es pugui aprovar de forma definitiva.

7.- Al passat ple, el batle va dir que després de Sant Antoni es reuniria amb l’oposició per parlar del pressupost. Aquesta reunió no s’ha convocat. Que pensa fer l’equip de govern al respecte dels pressuposts del 2019.

Casi tots els regidors tenen la seva proposta casi llesta, i amb l’interventor han abordat els punts bàsics, i en una setmana o 10 dies esperen poder fer aquesta reunió per rebre propostes dels diferents grups de l’oposició.

Veurem si aquesta vegada els terminis s’acaben complint, o passa com és habitual que s’esgota el temps i no s’han realitzat les reunions.

Une nouvelle croix à la place de l'ancienne
Parmi ceux dont s'occupait le Père Benoît se trouvaient huit étudiants dont il prit en charge les frais de scolarité. Il recevait cet argent de bienfaiteurs, mais à un moment donné, il commença à se sentir mal à l'aise de leur causer des inconvénients. Il devait trouver 12 000 drachmes. En fin de compte, il réussit à récolter la quasi-totalité du montant, bien qu'il lui manquait 1500 drachmes pour l'un des élèves. Ne pensant à aucun autre moyen d'obtenir la somme manquante, le Père Benoît décida de vendre sa seule croix pectorale ! Son assistant protesta :

"Si tu vends ta croix, je te quitterai ! Ce ne sera pas une tragédie si certains restent sans éducation. Après tout, nous ne sommes pas responsables de l'éducation de tous les enfants du monde !"

Mais le Père Benoît vendit la croix en secret. Et l'assistant remarqua la disparition de la croix après que le Père Benoît ait prêché des sermons sans la porter pendant deux semaines de suite.

"Père, où est la croix ?" demanda l'assistant.

"Elle a trouvé sa place, mon enfant. Ne t’inquiéte pas ! Je peux prêcher la Parole de Dieu sans croix."

Quelques jours plus tard, le Père Benoît attrapa la grippe. Quand son assistant vint le voir, le Père Benoît lui donna une notification de colis. L'assistant se rendit au bureau de poste et revint avec une petite boîte. Quand ils l'ouvrirent, ils trouvèrent un étui avec une croix pectorale d'archiprêtre absolument neuve. Il s'avéra que la croix avait été envoyée par le métropolite Dorothée de Trikki et Stagoi. Le métropolite avait déjà eu un accident de la route, et le seul prêtre qui lui avait envoyé un télégramme pour s'enquérir de son état était le Père Benoît ! D'autres n'avaient pas écrit un mot pour se renseigner sur le métropolite qui avait échappé de justesse à la mort ! C'est donc en signe de gratitude envers le prêtre aimant, le Père Benoît, que le métropolite Dorothée lui avait envoyé cette croix pectorale.

"Ô gens de peu de foi ! J'ai donné mon ancienne croix et le Christ m'en a envoyé une nouvelle."

I am deeply honored to have, on July 16, 2018, delivered the 5th Annual Edmund W. Gordon Distinguished Lecture as part of the Reimagining Education Annual Summer Institute at Teachers College Columbia University in New York City.  My talk was titled, “Liberating Ways of Knowing: The Struggle for Ethnic Studies and the Educators We Need.” Below is a short story they did on my talk, as well.

This year's Reimagining Education Summer Institute—which I highly recommend for practitioners —will feature Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings.  I am so pleased to have had a message that resonates and incredibly honored to be in such amazing company, as well.

Heartfelt thanks to Phillip A. Smith, Associate Director for the Reimagining Education Summer Institute and Dr. Amy Stuart Wells who is not only a member of the faculty at Teachers College, but also the 2019 President of the American Educational Research Association.

The talk reflects a lot of my current work and thinking with respect to Ethnic Studies and how, if done well, it encourages other, more liberatory ways of knowing and being in education. 

For those you who know Dr. Ted Gordon, Associate Professor in the University of Texas at Austin Department of African and African Diaspora Studies and Vice Provost for Diversity, Edmund W. Gordon is his father that you can learn about here.   

Again, thanks to Amy and Phillip for your outstanding leadership together with this wonderful opportunity to share the great work that we're doing in Austin, Texas, as well as to the renowned Dr. Edmund W. Gordon whose pathbreaking scholarship I have read and admired over the years.

This year’s summer institute on understanding race and education seeks to unite strands of a broader movement
Teachers College will hold its third annual Reimagining Education summer institute on July 16-19th.
As in past years, the Institute’s main thrust is understanding race and education, says its director, Amy Stuart Wells, Professor of Sociology & Education. Created by TC faculty and students across six of the College’s 10 departments, Reimagining Education is first and foremost a professional development forum that provides the nation’s predominantly white teaching force with hands-on strategies (and continuing education credits) for making subject matter relevant for America’s students, the majority of whom are of color. The approaches range from using hip hop to teach science to training entire schools on how to create college-going cultures for all students.
“TC is becoming the go-to place, nationally and internationally, for this kind of work. No other school of education could pull this off, because no other school of education has the breadth and depth of knowledge to do this work. And while other institutions discuss these issues, only we give teachers the opportunity and the credits to use this for professional development.”

But this year’s Institute also breaks new ground in seeking to unite two strands of the broader movement to diversify and personalize education that thus far have been separated by geography and differing ethnic contexts. The keynote address (which is also TC’s annual Edmund W. Gordon Lecture) will be delivered by Angela Valenzuela, Professor of Educational Leadership & Policy at the University of Texas-Austin, who is a leader of the Latina/o-based Ethnic Studies movement that has arisen in the American Southwest.  [Note: The Gordon Lecture, which is sponsored by TC’s Institute for Urban & Minority Education, is free and open to the public. COMING TOGETHER This year's Institute unites champions of strategies such as culturally relevant pedagogy with leaders of the more Southwest-based Ethnic Studies movement like Angela Valenzuela, who will deliver TC's Edmund W. Gordon Lecture.
“Ethnic studies has presented itself as a content area, while culturally relevant pedagogy and culturally sustaining leadership, which is what we tend to talk about more in the Northeast, is presented as more of a strategy,” Wells says. “As a result, to some extent, they’ve been more successful in the Southwest than we have here in changing education at the policy level.”
Wells also believes that this year’s Institute takes on heightened relevance in the wake of highly publicized battles over Mayor Bill de Blasio’s proposal to change the policy for admitting students to the city’s eight “selective schools.”
“People are fighting over seats in these schools because of the way the system is set up, but we really need a different starting point for the discussion, because right now even the winners aren’t happy,” she says. “If we can change the way we think about teaching and learning to reflect a broader understanding of what constitutes ability, then the admissions criteria we use for kids now would no longer make sense to us. It would no longer be a zero-sum game.”

  I don’t doubt many politicians have done things worthy of regret, but it is becoming difficult to keep up with the sorry spectacle. I would like to share with you this story, please take some few minutes to read it.

“A group of people were travelling in a boat. One of them took a drill and began to drill a hole beneath himself. His colleagues said to him: “Why are you doing this?” The man replied: “Why are you concerned about it? Am I not drilling under my own place?” They said to him: “But you will flood the boat for all of us!” 

Imagine being a passenger on this boat, and one person, without concern for you or others, endangers  your safety and security. The person drilling a hole on the boat may have valid reasons for doing so. Perhaps they want to drop a fishing line because they are hungry. Maybe they want to use the water to cool their feet or wash. Maybe the boat is on a lake and they want water to drink. It is true that patriotism has lost feeling for most of politicians, the hierarchy of importance has been Self, family, friends and finally Country. Self interests has driven politicians to the extent of setting their peaceful Countries to war, for example in 1992 Angola ,more than 300,000 people died, in 1994 more than 800,000 died in Rwanda. I believe under President Magufuli’s administration this will not happen, he promised to protect Tanzanian and he is walking the talk.

Tindu Lissu may have valid reasons for what he is currently doing , touring abroad and tarnishing our Country’s image, he might be revenging against the so called “unknown people” thinking that the government is behind them for the tragedy incident which happened to him in Dodoma. He may also have hidden intentions such as trying to win a Presidential nomination from his political party and therefore gaining popularity through western media. However no matter how rational the reason may seem to him, spoiling your Country’s reputation globally has absolutely no excuse, and therefore he needs to apologize to Tanzanians for what he has done to our beloved Tanzania.

For a mature politician who was born and raised up in Tanzania, studied in Tanzania where education by the time was free, and he was paid by the Government at University level, cannot be pushed this far by circumstantial evidence of the tragic incident that happened to him. The wise thing is to cooperate with the police and other security organs to allow intensive investigation of the incident and send the suspects to the court of law.

Moreover, you seem to be in a fit state to come back home and continue with your responsibility of representing your constituency, bearing in mind in several occasions people have believed in you and voted for you to represent them in Parliament, it is not that you are very special among other people in your constituency, but the person your people used to see inside you before becoming greedy and start drilling the boat Tanzania to fulfill your desires. The cost of doing what you’re doing in western media will be reflected in vote ballot in 2020! be careful for the citizens of Tanzania love President Magufuli because he is working for them.

Another important advice, please learn to appreciate, too much demanding is not going to help you, there are so many good things the people and Government of Tanzania has done to you, the Government has paid for your medical expenses with taxpayers money when you were in Nairobi, more than Tsh 246.7 million has been paid in Belgium.

Now letting you destroy the plate in which more than 50 million Tanzanians are served including yourself by spreading malicious lies against Tanzanians and the Government is unacceptable. Who doesn’t know what the current Administration has done, in three years time? We have corruption in the Country going down and public embezzlement diminishing faster than ever.

President Magufuli has revived the public airline which had only one plane with six brand new airplanes which has facilitated local and international trade, major projects with significant impact to ordinary people’s income are underway like Stigler’s Gauge, SGR project, Port expansions and road networks to name a few.

My fellow Tanzanian Mr.Lissu, as you may be aware in fighting corruption and bringing about real economic transformation for a developing country like Tanzania there are serious challenges, this shift will never bring smile to those who are greedy and those who want to see us as a receiving Country other than a donor Country.

Those who believe that this positive transformation Tanzania is going through is a threat to their interests will never stop fighting to undermine the efforts of our beloved President Dr John Magufuli. It is true that corruption in most of African countries have benefited a few people, record shows how much politicians like you have benefited from minerals contracts,and other contracts when working in different parliamentary committees as well as the foreign countries.

I would therefore advice my fellow Tanzanian Mr Lissu, that it seems he is one of the very few people in Tanzania who have a notion that, Tanzania is still under colonialism and not a free country. It is high time you realize that Tanzania is a free Country and can choose between what is democracy and what is violence, what is free speech and what is hate speech, as well as crime. We are governed by a Constitution and the rule of Law.

Most of our people and good friends of Tanzanian appreciates what Dr Magufuli is doing, the benefits of trade can be enjoyed in a peaceful and democratic state, and democracy can be exercised in a peaceful environment. One cannot exercise true democracy where there is no peace.We are sailing in this boat together , therefore we will never allow you to drill a hole and flood our Boat Mr.Tundu Lissu.

    Όταν διατηρείτε τις πατάτες σε κάποιο πολύ υγρό ή πολύ ζεστό περιβάλλον, πιθανώς να έχετε προσέξει κάτι ιδιαίτερο που συμβαίνει: έχουν την τάση να βγάζουν φύτρες και να παίρνουν μια πρασινωπή απόχρωση.
    Σίγουρα μπορείτε απλά να κόψετε αυτές τις φύτρες από τις πατάτες σας και να μαγειρέψετε το υπόλοιπο κομμάτι τους, αλλά αυτό δεν συνιστάται. Το σώφρον είναι να πετάξετε τελείως κάθε πατάτα που έχει πάρει πράσινη απόχρωση σε κάποιο σημείο της.
Τι είναι η σολανίνη στις πατάτες
    Αναρωτιέστε γιατί; Επειδή, αν έχει συμβεί αυτό, τότε έχει παραχθεί μέσα στην πατάτα ένα δηλητήριο που ονομάζεται σολανίνη. Πρόκειται για μία πολύ τοξική ουσία, ακόμα και σε πολύ μικρές ποσότητες.

    Η αλήθεια βέβαια είναι, ότι ένα άτομο 45 κιλών (
πχ ένα παιδί) θα πρέπει να καταναλώσει 450 γραμμάρια πράσινης πατάτας, για να αρρωστήσει ουσιαστικά. Έτσι, με μια απλή μπουκιά, για παράδειγμα, αν και δεν συνιστάται, το πιο πιθανό είναι ότι δεν θα πάθετε κάτι.
    Είναι λογικό, λοιπόν, ότι οι περισσότεροι θάνατοι από σολανίνη έχουν καταγραφεί σε περιόδους πείνας, όταν οι άνθρωποι αναγκάζονται να τρώνε ό, τι μπορούν για να αποφύγουν την πείνα - ακόμα κι αν είναι πράσινες πατάτες.
    Σύμφωνα με την ιρλανδική Αρχή για την Ασφάλεια των Τροφίμων, ο τρόπος για να καταλάβετε αν έχετε πάρει επικίνδυνη ποσότητα σολανίνηςείναι εάν αισθανθείτε πόνο στο στομάχι και υπνηλία, μετά την κατανάλωση πατάτας.

    Από την 27η Αυγούστου, αρχίζει η δημοσίευση  αυτοτελών διηγημάτων από τις «ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΙΚΕΣ ΙΣΤΟΡΙΕΣ» του Γεωργίου Μόδη, γραμμένες στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα, τότε που ο Μακεδονικός Αγώνας ξαπλώθηκε σε όλη τη Μακεδονία.
    Ο Γεώργιος Μόδης (14 Μαΐου 188718 Ιουνίου 1975) ήταν πολιτικός και ένας από τους κυριότερους συγγραφείς του Μακεδονικού Αγώνα, στον οποίο έλαβε μέρος μόλις αποφοίτησε το 1906 από το Γυμνάσιο του Μοναστηριού Πελαγονίας, ως μέλος του ανταρτικού σώματος του Γεωργίου Βολάνη. Στα βιβλία του, μια συναρπαστική σύζευξη εντέχνου λόγου και ιστορικής αλήθειας, ξαναζωντανεύει η μαρτυρία ενός από τους κρισιμώτερους της φυλής μας Εθνικούς Αγώνες. Ο ίδιος, έχει προσφέρει και την δική του αγωνιστική παρουσία, από τον καιρό που έφηβος, πολεμούσε στα μακεδονικά βουνά με το τουφέκι.
    Η συγκεκριμένη σειρά, αποτελείται από 20 βιβλία, τα οποία μας τα έδωσε η Σχολή Ευελπίδων τον Ιούλιο του 1973, όταν αποφοιτήσαμε. Τα διάβασα όλα με ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον, και από τότε μπορώ να πώ ότι κατάλαβα τι ήταν ο Μακεδονικός Αγώνας, αφού στο σχολείο αυτό το κεφάλαιο έλαμπε με την απουσία του!
    Συνιστώ ανεπιφύλακτα την ανάγνωσή τους, ιδιαίτερα στους νέους, αφού έχει αποδειχθεί πως ο Μακεδονικός Αγώναςείναι μια περίοδος της Ελληνικής Ιστορίας που διατηρήθηκε σκόπιμα «ομιχλώδης» από το ελληνικό κράτος.

    Θέλοντας να ξυπνήσω τις αναμνήσεις και το παιδί που κρύβεται μέσα σε όλους, κάθε εβδομάδα, θα βάζω ένα τεύχος από την έκδοση ‘’ΓΕΛΙΟ ΚΑΙ ΧΑΡΑ’’ ( ή ΜΙΚΥ ΜΑΟΥΣ όπως τα λέγαμε πιτσιρικάδες ), από την προσωπική μου συλλογή, για να αναπολήσουν τις μέρες που τρέχαμε στο περίπτερο την ημέρα κυκλοφορίας του. Έκανε μόνο 3 δραχμές.
    Η ποιότητα του τεύχους, είναι ανάλογη του χρόνου και της καταστάσεως, αφού η αρχή τους έγινε την δεκαετία του ’50. ( 1954)
    Σήμερα, σας έχω το τεύχος «ΓΕΛΙΟ ΚΑΙ ΧΑΡΑ α/α 221   Τομ και Τζέρρυ σε δύο ιστορίες (Το κακό ποντίκι και Το σπάνιο πουλί). Κι ακόμα ο Φούζυ και ο Γούζυ (Σκληροί άντρες) και ο Σάμυ κι ο Γουάφ (Το αγκαθωτό οχυρό). Κυκλοφόρησε Σάββατο 13 Αυγούστου 1960

    Λευκός καρχαρίας; Λιοντάρι; Σκορπιός; Φίδια; Πεινασμένοι λύκοι; Άγριες αρκούδες; Κι όμως, κανένα από αυτά τα ζώα δεν είναι τόσο απειλητικό για τον άνθρωπο, όσο ένα πλάσμα που θεωρείται περισσότερο ενοχλητικό, παρά φονικό.
    Παρά ταύτα, τα κουνούπια είναι υπεύθυνα για το θάνατο περισσότερων από
725.000 χιλιάδων ανθρώπων κάθε χρόνο, σύμφωνα με τον Παγκόσμιο Οργανισμό Υγείας, ο οποίος τα κατατάσσει στα πιο επικίνδυνα πλάσματα του κόσμου.
    Φυσικά, τα κουνούπια και τα τσιμπήματά τους δεν είναι θανατηφόρα, ωστόσο, ως φορείς πολλών ασθενειών προκαλούν περισσότερους θανάτους από τα σαγόνια του καρχαρία ή το κεντρί του σκορπιού.
    Μόνο η μαλάρια σκοτώνει ετησίως περίπου
600.000 ανθρώπους, ενώ άλλες σοβαρές ασθένειες που μεταφέρονται από τα κουνούπια είναι ο δάγκειος πυρετός, ο κίτρινος πυρετός και η εγκεφαλίτιδα.
    Ακόμα χειρότερα, τα κουνούπια προσαρμόζονται με μεγάλη ευκολία σε διαφορετικά περιβάλλοντα, πολλαπλασιάζονται με μεγάλη ταχύτητα και οι πληθυσμοί τους κορυφώνονται σε διαφορετικές περιόδους σε όλο τον πλανήτη.
    Για να γίνει αντιληπτό πόσο επικίνδυνα είναι τα κουνούπια, τα αμέσως πιο επικίνδυνα ζώα -
πλην ανθρώπου- είναι τα φίδια (50.000 θύματα το χρόνο), τα σκυλιά (25.000)  και η μύγα τσε-τσε (10.000 θύματα).

    Στο εδώλιο σκοπεύει να στείλει τους γονείς του ένας 27χρονος από την Βομβάη επειδή εκείνοι αποφάσισαν… να τον φέρουν στον κόσμο χωρίς τη συγκατάθεσή του.
    Απίστευτο και όμως αληθινό.  Η ιστορία του 27χρονου Ράφαελ Σάμιουελ κάνει τον γύρο του κόσμου, με τον ίδιο να δηλώνει ότι είναι «αντι-γενετιστής» και πως πριν κάποιος γίνει γονιός θα πρέπει να ρωτά το αγέννητο παιδί αν επιθυμεί να έρθει στον κόσμο!
Θέλω να πως σε όλα παιδιά της Ινδίας ότι δεν χρωστούν τίποτα στους γονείς του. Αγαπώ τους γονείς μου, έχω μια εξαιρετική σχέση μαζί τους, αλλά με έχουν κάνει για δική τους ευχαρίστηση» δηλώνει και προσθέτει: «Η ζωή μου είναι εκπληκτική, αλλά δεν καταλαβαίνω γιατί πρέπει να φτιάξω τη ζωή μου μέσα από τον παραλογισμό των σπουδών και της καριέρας, ειδικά όταν δεν ερωτήθηκαν αν θέλω να έχω ύπαρξη»!
    Έτσι λοιπόν ο 27χρονος σκοπεύει να καταφύγει στη δικαιοσύνη έχοντας απέναντί τους τους ανθρώπους που τον έφεραν στη ζωή ώστε να αποκαταστήσει την αδικία. Πάντως, προς έκπληξη όλων, λέει πως οι σχέσεις του με τους γονείς του είναι εκπληκτικές.

    Πρόκειται για αμερικάνικο λιοντάρι. Το περιστατικό συνέβη σε δάσος του Κολοράντο. Ένας άνδρας έκανε πεζοπορία μέσα στο δάσος στο Φορτ Κόλινς όταν άκουσε έναν ήχο πίσω του. Γύρισε και διαπίστωσε ότι τον ακολουθούσε ένα αμερικάνικο λιοντάρι το οποίο ήταν έτοιμο να ορμήξει.
    Το αιλουροειδές έκανε την επίθεση του και άρχισε να χτυπάει τον άνδρα με τα χοντρά πόδια του, να τον καρφώνει με τα νύχια του και να θέλει να καρφώσει τα δόντια του στο λαιμό του.
    Η αντίδραση του άνδρα δεν ήταν εκείνη που θα περίμενε κάποιος από το θύμα. Έχωσε τα χέρια του στο λαιμό του λιονταριού και το έπνιξε.
    Στη συνέχεια αιμόφυρτος πήγε με τα πόδια μέσα στο χιόνι σε κοντινό νοσοκομείο. Μόλις είπε τι συνέβη ενημερώθηκε ο σερίφης ο οποίος μαζί με κάποιον κτηνίατρο έφτασε στο σημείο και βρήκε το λιοντάρι νεκρό.    Ο κτηνίατρος ύστερα από εξέταση του ζώου είπε ότι ευσταθεί η ιστορία του άνδρα και ότι πράγματι το ζώο έχει στραγγαλιστεί.
    Επιθέσεις από λιοντάρια της Αμερικής ή λιοντάρια του βουνού  θεωρούνται σπάνιες. Συνολικά 16 άνθρωποι έχουν τραυματιστεί και 3 έχουν χάσει τη ζωή τους από το 1990 μέχρι σήμερα.
    Ειδικοί εξηγούν ότι ο καλύτερος τρόπος για να αντιμετωπίσει κανείς μια τέτοια επίθεση είναι να κάνει πολύ θόρυβο, να κοιτάει συνέχεια το λιοντάρι, να υποχωρεί σιγά-σιγά και να μην το βάλει στα πόδια.

    Την έντονη αντίδραση της Πανελλήνιας Ομοσπονδίας Πολιτιστικών Συλλόγων Μακεδόνων, προκάλεσε η προαναγγελία ίδρυσης κόμματος από συνδιοργανωτή των συλλαλητηρίων για την Μακεδονία και η χρησιμοποίηση εικόνων από τις μεγάλες διαδηλώσεις για το Μακεδονικό.
    Την ανακοίνωση για την δημιουργία ενός νέου κομματικού φορέα, με την ονομασία «Ελληνική Πολιτική Συνείδηση» (ΕΠΟΣ) έκανε ο Μιχάλης Πατσίκας, ένας εκ των διοργανωτών των συλλαλητηρίων ενάντια στη Συμφωνία των Πρεσπών.
Η Πανελλήνια Ομοσπονδία Πολιτιστικών Συλλόγων Μακεδόνων ως μέλος του δικτύου των Παμμακεδονικών Ενώσεων Υφηλίου, εκ των βασικών διοργανωτών των μεγάλων συλλαλητηρίων, ΟΥΔΕΜΙΑ ΣΧΕΣΗ έχει με την ίδρυση κόμματος που διατείνεται ότι προέρχεται από το κίνημα των συλλαλητηρίων για την Μακεδονία» αναφέρει η ανακοίνωση που εξέδωσαν οι Παμμακεδονικές Ενώσεις.

Είναι ΑΠΑΡΑΔΕΚΤΟ να χρησιμοποιούνται εικόνες των μεγάλων συλλαλητηρίων ως μέσο διαφήμισης ενός νεοϊδρυθέντος κόμματος. Είναι ΑΠΑΡΑΔΕΚΤΟ να καπηλεύεται ο αγώνας κι η αγωνία αγνών πατριωτών δίνοντας την αλγεινή εντύπωση ότι όλα έγιναν για να δημιουργηθεί ένα κόμμα» σημειώνεται σε αυστηρή γλώσσα.

Δεχθήκαμε τόνους χημικών και άφθονη βία από τις δυνάμεις καταστολής κατόπιν εντολής της κυβέρνησης. Σταθήκαμε ΟΡΘΙΟΙ…το ίδιο θα πράξουμε και ΤΩΡΑ! Ο αγώνας για την Μακεδονία θα είναι μακρύς και δύσβατος. Ο αγώνας για την Μακεδονία ΠΑΡΑΜΕΝΕΙ ΕΘΝΙΚΟΣ και όχι κομματικός. Σε αυτόν τον αγώνα θέλουμε ΟΛΟΥΣ τους Έλληνες ΕΝΩΜΕΝΟΥΣ».

    Χαμένοι όσον αφορά τη δωρεάν πρόσβασή τους σε γιατρό είναι, τουλάχιστον μέχρι σήμερα, οι ασφαλισμένοι του ΕΟΠΥΥ από την εφαρμογή του οικογενειακού γιατρού και του νέου συστήματος Πρωτοβάθμιας Φροντίδας Υγείας.
    Σύμφωνα με την Ενωση Ιατρών ΕΟΠΥΥ, η επιλογή του υπουργείου Υγείας να καταγγείλει τον περασμένο Ιούλιο τις συμβάσεις του οργανισμού με παθολόγους, γενικούς γιατρούς και παιδιάτρους, σε μια προσπάθεια να τους πείσει να συνεργαστούν ως οικογενειακοί γιατροί, είχε ως αποτέλεσμα τουλάχιστον 1.000 γιατροί να απομακρυνθούν από το δίκτυο των συμβεβλημένων και συνεπώς να «χαθούν» από τον
Αύγουστο έως σήμερα περίπου 1.500.000 δωρεάν επισκέψεις για τους ασφαλισμένους του ΕΟΠΥΥ. Μάλιστα, η Ενωση Ιατρών ΕΟΠΥΥ υπολογίζει ότι, για να καλυφθεί αυτό το υγειονομικό κενό, οι ασφαλισμένοι κατέβαλαν τουλάχιστον 15.000.000 ευρώ ιδιωτική δαπάνη για επισκέψεις στους «απολυμένους» από τον ΕΟΠΥΥ γιατρούς, τους οποίους έως πριν από λίγους μήνες επισκέπτονταν δωρεάν.
    Εως και τον Ιούλιο, ο ΕΟΠΥΥ είχε συμβάσεις πανελλαδικά με περίπου 1.700 παθολόγους, γενικούς γιατρούς και παιδιάτρους και οι οποίοι κάλυπταν δωρεάν 200 επισκέψεις ασφαλισμένων τον μήνα με 2.000 ευρώ μηνιαία αμοιβή (
μεικτά). Το υπουργείο Υγείας απηύθυνε πρόσκληση στους γιατρούς αυτούς να ενταχθούν στο σώμα των οικογενειακών γιατρών του νέου συστήματος Πρωτοβάθμιας Φροντίδας Υγείας (ΠΦΥ), αλλάζοντας τους όρους της συνεργασίας. Θα είχαν υπό την ευθύνη τους 2.250 πολίτες και για τον λόγο αυτό θα δέσμευαν το ιατρείο τους για τέσσερις ώρες την ημέρα, που στην πράξη σημαίνει 320 δωρεάν επισκέψεις τον μήνα, αλλά με τις ίδιες αποδοχές. Στο ανοικτό αυτό κάλεσμα έχουν ανταποκριθεί έως σήμερα 700 ιδιώτες γιατροί, που μαζί με τους 500 γιατρούς των 110 Τοπικών Μονάδων Υγείας αποτελούν το κύριο σώμα των οικογενειακών γιατρών. Από το υπουργείο Υγείας έχει χαρακτηριστεί το προηγούμενο σύστημα των 200 επισκέψεων τον μήνα αναποτελεσματικό και καθόλου εξυπηρετικό για τον πολίτη, με δεδομένο ότι οι επισκέψεις εξαντλούνταν τις πρώτες ημέρες του μήνα και όσοι δεν έκλειναν νωρίς ραντεβού αναγκάζονταν να πληρώσουν από την τσέπη τους. Ωστόσο, και σήμερα εκατομμύρια ασφαλισμένοι μένουν ακάλυπτοι, ενώ ολόκληρες περιοχές δεν διαθέτουν οικογενειακό γιατρό.
    Η Ενωση Ιατρών ΕΟΠΥΥκατηγορεί το υπουργείο Υγείας ότι
«σκόπιμα αποκρύπτει το γεγονός ότι χάθηκαν πάνω από 1.500.000 δωρεάν επισκέψεις από το δίκτυο των συμβεβλημένων γιατρών» και σημειώνει πως «από τη μια το υπουργείο θεωρεί στρεβλό και μη αποδοτικό το σύστημα των 200 επισκέψεων τον μήνα, χωρίς “πραγματικό” ιατρικό έργο αλλά μόνο υπηρεσίες “συνταγογράφησης”, από την άλλη καλεί τους ίδιους αυτούς “μη χρήσιμους” γιατρούς να συμβληθούν εκ νέου με τις νέες συμβάσεις οικογενειακού γιατρού, με τεράστιο εργασιακό φορτίο και την “ελκυστική” αποζημίωση του ενός ευρώ ανά ασθενή τον μήνα».
    Η Ενωση Ιατρών ΕΟΠΥΥ, αφού τονίζει ότι οι ασφαλισμένοι είναι «
όμηροι της στρεβλής εμμονής του υπουργείου», καθώς κλήθηκαν να καλύψουν το υγειονομικό κενό των δωρεάν επισκέψεων, ζητεί την επαναφορά των παλαιών συμβάσεων, υποστηρίζοντας ότι οι 200 δωρεάν επισκέψεις τον μήνα με αμοιβή κατά πράξη και περίπτωση είναι «ο πιο αποδοτικός τρόπος παροχής υπηρεσιών ΠΦΥ, με την πληρέστερη γεωγραφική κάλυψη πληθυσμού ανά την επικράτεια».

વાત એ વખતની છે જયારે દશરથરાજા યુવાનીને ઉંબરે પહોંચ્યા હતા.હજી તેમનાં લગ્ન થયા નહોતાં.ધનુર્વિદ્યામાં તે અતિ પારંગત હતા,આંખ મીંચી,માત્ર અવાજ પરથી તે ધાર્યું નિશાન વીંધતા હતા.આ શબ્દ-વેધી બાણ- વિદ્યાનો તેમને બહુ ગર્વ પણ હતો.ઘણીવાર કુમાર દશરથ એકલો,નદીના કિનારે કે ઉપવનમાં ફરવા નીકળી પડતો અને ક્યાંક સંતાઈને માત્ર અવાજ પરથી વન્ય-પશુના શિકાર કરતો.
એવી એક ચોમાસાની સાંજે કુમાર દશરથ હાથમાં ધનુષ્ય-બાણ લઇને મૃગયા રમવા,સરયુ નદીના કિનારે,એકલો નીકળી પડ્યો હતો.ફરતાં ફરતાં રાત પડી ગઈ,એટલે કુમાર દશરથ એક વૃક્ષની ઓથે છુપાઈને,નદીમાં પાણી પીવા આવતા કોઈ પશુનો અવાજ સાંભળવા કાન માંડી ને બેઠો.
ચારે તરફ અંધારું હતું,અને કશું દેખાતું નહોતું.દશરથ કેટલોક વખત આમ સંતાઈને બેસી રહ્યો હતો,
એવામાં પાણીમાં તેણે બડબડ-બડબડ અવાજ સાંભળ્યો.તેણે ધાર્યું કે કોઈ જંગલી પશુ પાણી પીવા આવ્યું લાગે છે,તેથી તેનો વધ કરવા તેણે તરત જ ભાથામાંથી ઝેરી સર્પ જેવું બાણ કાઢ્યું,ને ધનુષ્ય પર ચડાવ્યું.

પોતાની શબ્દ-વેધી બાણ-વિદ્યા પર તે એટલો મુસ્તાક હતો કે,તે લાંબો વિચાર કરવા રોકાયો નહીં,
સનનન કરતુ બાણ છૂટ્યું ને બરોબર નિશાનમાં જઈ ને ચોંટ્યું.
ત્યાં જ કોઈ મનુષ્યના ગળાની ચીસ સંભળાણી.એ સાંભળીને દશરથને ફાળ પડી.
શું બન્યું છે? તેની તપાસ કરવા તે અવાજની દિશાએ આગળ વધ્યો,ત્યાં એણે મનુષ્યનો વિલાપ સંભળાયો.
“અરેરે,મને કોને આ બાણ માર્યું?ઓચિંતાનું કોણ મારું વેરી જાગી પડ્યું?
મેં તો જીવનમાં કોઈનું કંઈ પણ બગાડ્યું નથી તો અહીં ક્યાંથી મારું મોત ટપકી પડ્યું?
મારું તો ઠીક પણ મારા વૃદ્ધ માતા-પિતાનું શું થશે? મારા વગર તેઓ કેવી રીતે જીવશે?
અરેરે,મને હણનારે એક સાથે ત્રણ જીવ ની હત્યા કરી છે.

આ સાંભળી દશરથનાં ગાત્ર ગળી ગયાં.તેનું શરીર થર થર ધ્રુજવા લાગ્યું.હાથમાંથી ધનુષ્ય-બાણ પડી ગયાં.તેને બીક લાગી કે પોતાને હાથે નિર્દોષનો વધ થઇ ગયો લાગે છે. તે દોડતો નદી કિનારે પહોંચ્યો અને જઈને જુએ છે તો એક જટા-વલ્કલ-ધારી કુમાર,જમીન પર પડ્યો છે ને બાણ તેની છાતીમાં ખૂંપી ગયું હતું.દશરથે તેની પાસે જઈ અને પોતાના અપરાધની ક્ષમા માગી.

કિશોરે કહ્યું કે-મારું નામ શ્રવણ છે,મને મારું દુઃખ નથી,પણ મારાં માત-પિતાનું શું થશે તેનું મને દુઃખ છે.તેઓ વૃદ્ધ અને અંધ છે,અને તરસથી પીડાય છે,તુ જલ્દી એમની પાસે પહોંચી જઈ,તેમણે પાણી પાઈને પ્રસન્ન કર.મોડું થશે અને મારા મરણની તેમને શંકા થશે તો તે તને શાપ દેશે.અને વૃદ્ધ,અંધ,માત-પિતાની કકળતી આંતરડીનો શાપ તને જંપી ને રહેવા નહીં દે.માટે વહેલો,જા, અને એમને શાંત કર.

દશરથ મૂઢ બની ગયો હતો,શ્રવણના બાણની વેદના, શાંત કરવા તેણે બાણ ખેંચી કાઢ્યું,
પણ શ્રવણના પ્રાણ બહુ ટકી શક્યા નહિ,અને તે મોતને શરણ થયો.
પછી દશરથ નદીમાંથી કમંડળમાં પાણી ભરીને શ્રવણના વૃદ્ધ માત-પિતા પાસે ગયો.
પગરવનો અવાજ સાંભળી,શ્રવણની માતા એ કહ્યું-કે બેટા પાણી લાવ્યો?
દશરથ કંઈ પણ જવાબ આપતો નથી ને,કમંડળ ભરેલ પાણી તેમના હાથમાં આપ્યું.

શ્રવણ ના પિતા કહે છે કે-બેટા,તુ કેમ કંઈ બોલતો નથી? તુ નહિ બોલે તો અમે પાણી પીવાનાં નથી.તુ અમ અંધ ની લાકડી છે,અમે તારો શો અપરાધ કર્યો છે કે તુ અમારી સાથે બોલતો નથી? તુ રોજ અમને વેદ-પાઠ સાંભળવનારો આજે કંઈ બોલતો કેમ નથી?
દશરથની આંખોમાંથી હવે ટપ-ટપ આંસુ માંડ્યા.મા એ હાથ લાંબો કર્યો અને દશરથને અડકતાં જ,
તેમણે ખબર પડી કે –આ એમનો દીકરો શ્રવણ નથી.એના શરીરે મૃગ-ચર્મ નથી,માથે જટા નથી.

ભયભીત થઇ દશરથે કહ્યું કે હું આપનો પુત્ર નથી,પણ હું દશરથ નામનો ક્ષત્રિય છું,રાતે મૃગયા રમવા નીકળ્યો હતો,ત્યાં વનચર પ્રાણી સમજીને અજાણથી શબ્દ-વેધી બાણ છોડ્યું,તે આપના પુત્રને વાગતાં તેનું મરણ થયું છે,મારાથી અજાણ્યે અપરાધ થઇ ગયો છે,મને ક્ષમા કરો,હું આપનો પુત્ર બનીને જિંદગીભર આપની સેવા કરીશ.પણ પુત્ર ના મરણના સમાચાર સાંભળતાં જ શ્રવણના માતા-પિતા બેભાન થઇ ગયાં.થોડીવારે જયારે તે ભાનમાં આવ્યા ત્યારે,તેમણે કહ્યું કે –અમને અમારા લાલ પાસે લઇ જા.

દશરથ બંનેને નદી-કિનારે દોરી લઇ ગયો.શ્રવણના મૃત શરીરને હાથ લગાવી ને વૃદ્ધ-વૃદ્ધા કલ્પાંત કરે છે.અને શ્રવણના ગુણો ને અને તેની સેવાને સંભાળી –સંભાળી ને તેમની આંખો અનરાધાર વહે છે.
દશરથે કરગરીને કહ્યું કે –અજાણતાં થયેલો મારો અપરાધ ક્ષમા કરો.મારા પર દયા કરો.
ત્યારે વૃદ્ધે કહ્યું કે-તેં તારો અપરાધ કબૂલ કર્યો છે ને અમારી સેવા કરવા તત્પર થયો છે,તેથી તુ બચી ગયો છે.પણ અજાણ્યે પણ ઝેર ખવાઈ જવાય તો તે ઝેર તો તેનું કામ કરે જ છે અને મૃત્યુ તો આવે જ છે.
તેથી હું તને કહું છું કે-પુત્ર વિયોગમાં આજે જેમ અમારું મરણ થાય છે તેમ તારું મરણ પણ પુત્ર વિયોગમાં જ થશે.દશરથે માથું નમાવીને શાપ માથે ચડાવ્યો.પછી વૃદ્ધે,દશરથને ચિતા સળગાવવાનું કહ્યું અને ચિતા તૈયાર થતા,વૃદ્ધ-વૃદ્ધાએ પણ પુત્રની પાછળ ચિતામાં પ્રવેશી ને પ્રાણ ત્યાગ કર્યો.

મંત્રી સુમંત્ર પર શોકની એટલી બધી અસર થઇ છે કે,તેમની દ્રષ્ટિ મંદ થઇ ગઈ,કાને સંભળાવાનું ઓછું થઇ ગયું,ને બુદ્ધિ જાણે બહેર મારી ગઈ,જીવતા છતાં જાણે મૂવા જેવા થઇ ગયા.જાત સાથે જ વાતો કરતા હોય તેમ બબડે છે-અયોધ્યા ના લોકો પૂછશે તો તેમને હું શું જવાબ આપીશ? કૌશલ્યામા,વાછરડીને મળવા ગાય દોડી આવે તેમ દોડી આવશે તો તેમને હું શું જવાબ આપીશ? મહારાજાને હું કેવી રીતે આશ્વાસન આપીશ? રામજી વનમાં જ રહી ગયા તેવું હું કેવી રીતે બોલી શકીશ?

રથ તમસા નદીને કિનારે આવ્યો..સુમંત્રે જીવને કાઠો કરી ને,સાથે આવેલા નિષાદોને વિદાય કર્યા.પણ હજુ તમને અયોધ્યામાં પ્રવેશ કરવાની હિંમત ચાલતી નથી.એટલે આખો દિવસ નગરની બહાર બેસી રહ્યા અને સાંજ થઇને અંધારું થયું ત્યારે ગૂપચૂપ નગરમાં પેઠા ને રાજમહેલ બાજુ ગયા.

એવું બનેલું કે ,રામજીએ વનમાં પ્રયાણ કર્યું તે પછી દશરથજીએ કહ્યું કે-મારે કૈકેયીના ભવનમાં રહેવું નથી મને કૌશલ્યાના ભવનમાં લઇ જાઓ.એટલે તેમને કૌશલ્યાના ભવનમાં રાખવામાં આવ્યા હતા.સુમંત્રને જોઈને દાસદાસીઓ ભેગાં થઇ ગયા અને તેમને ખબર આપી કે મહારાજા કૌશલ્યાના ભવન માં છે. સુમંત્ર જાણે બેભાન અવસ્થામાં જ ચાલે છે. તેમણે દશરથ રાજાને “રામ-રામ-સીતા સીતા” એમ બોલતાં-વિલાપ કરતા જોયા.સુમંત્ર ને જોતાં રાજાના જીવમાં જીવ આવ્યો,એકદમ ઉભા થઇ ને સુમંત્રને ભેટી પડ્યા અને પૂછે છે કે-
સુમંત્ર મારો રામ ક્યાં? સુમંત્રની આંખોમાંથી પણ દડદડ આંસુ પડવા માંડ્યા.

રાજાનું હૈયું બેસી ગયું.તે બોલી ઉઠયા કે-સુમંત્ર મારા રામ-સીતા પાછા ના આવ્યા? અરે,સુમંત્ર,હું રામ જેવા દીકરાનો બાપ થવા માટે લાયક નથી..તુ મારું હિત ઈચ્છતો હોય તો,મને અત્યારે ને અત્યારે રામની પાસે
લઇ જા.નહિ તો હું તને સત્ય કહું છું,મને જીવવાનું મન નથી,હું જીવી શકીશ નહિ.
સુમંત્ર રાજાને આશ્વાસનના બોલ કહે છે-મહારાજા,આપ તો જ્ઞાની છો,તમે ધીર છો,વીર છો.તમે ક્યાં નથી જાણતા કે,જન્મ-મરણ,સુખ-દુઃખ,લાભ-હાનિ,મેળાપ અને વિયોગ એ બધું યે કાળ ને વશ છે,બધું,
રાત-દિવસની ઘટમાળ ની જેમ આવે છે ને જાય છે.પણ મહાપુરુષ એ ઘટમાળથી લેપાતો નથી.

પછી સુમંત્રે રામજીની યાત્રા નું વર્ણન કર્યું,નિષાદરાજજી સેવાની વાત કરી.ને છેલ્લે તેમણે પોતે રાજાનો સંદેશો રામ-સીતાને કહ્યો હતો તે પણ કહ્યું.અને તેના જવાબમાં રામજીએ કહ્યું હતું કે-
મારા પિતાજીને મારા પ્રણામ કહેશો,અને કહેજો કે આપના પ્રતાપથી અમે સર્વ કુશળ છીએ.
સીતાજીએ સંદેશો આપ્યો હતો કે-હું અયોધ્યા નહિ આવી શકું,મારા પતિ વગર હું જીવી નહિ શકું.
મારા સાસુ અને સસરા ના ચરણ માં મારા પ્રણામ કહેજો.

બોલતાં બોલતાં સુમંત્રની વાણી અટકી ગઈ,અત્યંત શોકથી એ વિહ્વળ બની ગયા.
સુમંત્રનાં વચન સાંભળતાં જ રાજા,હે,રામ-હે,રામ બોલતાં પૃથ્વી પર પડ્યા.અને જળની બહાર માછલું તરફડે તેમ તરફડવા લાગ્યા.આસપાસનાં બધાં પણ વિલાપ કરવા માંડ્યાં.
કૌશલ્યા મા પણ રડતાં હતાં પણ હૈયું કાઠું કરીને રાજાને આશ્વાસન આપવાનો પ્રયાસ કરવા લાગ્યા.
“મહારાજ,રામ-વિરહનો મોટો સાગર પાર કરવાનો છે,હિંમત રાખો,ધૈર્ય ધારણ કરો,નહિ તો બધું ડૂબી જશે.
વનવાસની મુદત પુરી થતાં રામ જરૂર પાછા આવશે.

રાજાને જાણે છેલ્લું વાક્ય “રામ જરૂર પાછા આવશે” એટલું સંભળાણું.એમને આંખ ઉઘાડી ચારે-કોર જોયું,
ને ફરીથી બોલવા માંડ્યું કે-સુમંત્ર,મને લઇ જા,મને રામની પાસે લઇ જા,રામ વગર મારું જીવવું નકામું છે.
અને આટલું બોલતાં બોલતાં તો રાજા ફરીથી બેભાન થઇ ગયા.મધરાતે તે એકાએક ભાનમાં આવ્યા,ને નિસાસો નાંખી કૌશલ્યાને કહેવા લાગ્યા કે-માનવી જેવાં કર્મ કરે છે તેવાં જ ફળ તે આ જન્મમાં જ પામે છે.
કૌશલ્યાજી સાંભળી રહ્યાં,તેમને થયું કે-આ રીતે પણ રાજા પોતાના મનને આશ્વાસન આપે તે સારું છે.

દશરથરાજા કહે છે કે-હે,કૌશલ્યા,અત્યારે હું સ્પષ્ટ પણે જોઈ શકું છું કે-મારાં કર્મનું જ ફળ હું ભોગવી રહ્યો છું.મને અત્યારે યાદ આવે છે કે-અજાણે મારા થી એક ઘોર પાપ થઇ ગયું હતું,તે પાપનું ફળ અત્યારે હું ભોગવું છું. પાપ જાણીને થાય કે અજાણે થાય તેનું ફળ ભોગવવું જ પડે છે,
મનુષ્ય અજાણ્યે પણ જો ઝેર ખાઈ જાય તો તે મરે જ છે.
કૌશલ્યાજી શાંતિ થી સાંભળી રહ્યાં છે ને દશરથરાજા પોતાના પાપ નો પ્રસંગ કહી સંભળાવે છે.

Depois de uma discussão que demorou horas, o Conselho da União Europeia chegou a acordo sobre o artigo 13 da proposta de directiva para os direitos de autor, um documento que – se aprovado – vai definir novas regras para os conteúdos que são publicados em plataformas como o YouTube e o Facebook. Um dos grandes objectivos é diminuir a pirataria online.

Há semanas que o documento estava empatado com as negociações Conselho que não conseguia definir a dimensão das plataformas abrangidas pelas novas obrigações. É agora preciso retomar as negociações com o Parlamento Europeu e a Comissão Europeia (as restantes entidades envolvidas no processo legislativo Europeu) para chegar a um texto final, antes da data limite de 14 de Fevereiro. “É bom ver os países da União Europeia a encontrar novamente uma voz comum sobre a reforma dos direitos de autor”, comentou Andrus Ansip, o vice-Presidente da Comissão Europeia responsável pelo Mercado Único Digital, numa publicação no Twitter no final da reunião do Conselho.

Na proposta aprovada esta sexta-feira, que já tinha sido divulgada no começo da semana pelo site Politico, as plataformas mais pequenas (com uma facturação anual inferior a dez milhões de euros e até cinco milhões de visitantes mensais) que estejam há menos de três anos a disponibilizar os serviços no espaço europeu ficam excluídas de algumas das obrigações do artigo 13. É de longe o ponto mais controverso da proposta, por obrigar as plataformas a garantir que conteúdo para o qual não pagam uma licença não estará disponível nas suas plataformas.

Na prática, isto quer dizer que muitos sites podem ter de optar por mecanismos de monitorização e filtragem de conteúdos, semelhantes aos que o YouTube já usa, para detectar conteúdo pirateado. As plataformas mais pequenas também continuam a ter de retirar conteúdo para o qual não tenham licença se forem notificadas para isso. Esta é uma das razões que leva os críticos do artigo 13 da directiva a compará-lo a uma “máquina da censura”, mesmo com o Conselho a sublinhar na proposta que as regras não devem evoluir para que “os Estados-membros imponham uma obrigação de monitorização geral.”

Há hora de publicação desta notícia, não havia detalhes sobre a posição dos diferentes representantes dos Estados-membros quanto à proposta aprovada. “Não vamos revelar mais esta noite”, disse ao PÚBLICO Leonidas Karamountzos, assessor de imprensa do Conselho da União Europeia.

A proposta de directiva de direitos de autor ainda pode vir a mudar durante as próximas discussões com o Parlamento Europeu e a Comissão Europia. Mas o tempo para grandes discussões começa a escassear.

“Gostava de ver uma votação final em Março, mas estamos sob uma grande pressão de tempo”, admitiu ao PÚBLICO o eurodeputado alemão Axel Voss, relator da versão do texto do Parlamento Europeu que foi aprovada em Setembro. É também um dos grandes defensores dos objectivos do artigo 13. “Temos de chegar a um texto para a semana ou perdemos a quantidade de atenção que se está a gerar em torno do tema. O momentum”, explicou Voss. “Agora, todos estão informados sobre a directiva e sobre o que está em causa com o artigo 13 para tomar uma decisão.”

Voss não comenta a decisão do Conselho. Diz apenas que existem vários pontos com que discorda. “É algo que vamos ter de debater depois.”

A eurodeputada Julia Reda, uma das grandes críticas do artigo 13 da directiva, é mais incisiva sobre os problemas com a directiva. “[Com o acordo do Conselho] a inovação europeia na Internet será desencorajada devido aos novos custos e riscos legais para startups – mesmo que apenas entrem em vigor quando as plataformas fazem três anos ou começam a ter sucesso”, escreveu Reda esta semana no seu site, numa publicação que voltou a partilhar no Twitter esta sexta-feira. “Sites estrangeiros e aplicações que não podem suportar os custos de armadas de advogados também serão motivadas a bloquear todos os utilizadores da União Europeia do seu site para estarem seguras.”

Para Reda, a maioria dos europeus com menos de 25 anos está contra a directiva. "Mas os eurodeputados são mais velhos... É preciso alertá-los sobre a forma como os votantes mais jovens pensam", escreveu esta sexta-feira no Twitter.

O próximo trílogo está marcado para a tarde da próxima segunda-feira, com a reunião final planeada para quarta-feira. “Mesmo que todos concordemos com a versão do Conselho do artigo 13, o resto do texto tem de ser adaptado ao compromisso. Não pode haver apenas uma exclusão para as micro-empresas num artigo”, disse o eurodeputado alemão Axel Voss.

Críticas à directiva crescem
Sem um acordo sobre um texto final durante a reunião nas próximas semanas, torna-se impossível avançar antes das legislativas europeias. Nesse caso, um dos cenários possíveis é a Comissão Europeia desistir da directiva. É uma posição que começa a ganhar apoiantes. Várias organizações de artistas na União Europeia – até então maioritariamente a favor da directiva – estão agora a pedir que a proposta seja interrompida com base na proposta do Conselho.

“Lamentavelmente, com estas condições, preferimos não ter qualquer directiva do que uma má directiva. Pedimos, por isso, que as negociações não continuem com base nas propostas mais recentes do Concelho”, lê-se numa carta aberta aos eurodeputados, publicada esta semana, com base na proposta que foi discutida em Conselho esta sexta-feira. Foi assinada por organizações como a Federação Internacional de Indústria Fonográfica e a IMPALA, que reúne as associações de empresas musicais independentes.

Em Portugal, vários YouTubers, a eurodeputada Marisa Matias, e o historiador Rui Tavares, juntaram-se esta semana para criar uma campanha contra a proposta de novas obrigações para as plataformas online. Um dos problemas apontados é que a nova directiva responsabiliza as plataformas pelo conteúdo pirateado que disponibilizam, por vezes acidentalmente, em vez dos utilizadores que lá o colocam.

A um dia de uma reunião importante do Conselho da União Europeia para tentar resolver o impasse com a nova directiva dos direitos de autor, a eurodeputada Marisa Matias, o historiador Rui Tavares, o popular youtuber Wuant, e alguns outros opositores do artigo 13 juntaram-se numa campanha contra a proposta de novas obrigações para as plataformas online.

Um dos problemas apontados na campanha “Diz não ao Artigo 13” é que a proposta de directiva responsabiliza as plataformas, e não os infractores, pelo conteúdo que alojam, e cria uma obrigação de monitorizar o conteúdo que as pessoas põem na Internet.

 “Estamos numa fase crucial das negociações em que se deve tentar influenciar e tirar esse mecanismo de censura”, diz a eurodeputada do Bloco de Esquerda Marisa Matias, num vídeo disponível no site da campanha. Junta-se o testemunho do fundador do Livre e colunista do PÚBLICO Rui Tavares, que também pede que o artigo seja “revisto, corrigido ou até abolido” por “introduzir uma espécie de sistema de censura prévia ou automática”.

A campanha está a ser coordenada pela associação portuguesa D3, que luta pela defesa dos direitos digitais, e pela produtora de conteúdo audiovisual Thumb Media.

Desde que a directiva começou a ser formulada em 2016 que o artigo 13 é o mais controverso da proposta. Actualmente, as plataformas online não podem ser responsabilizadas directamente pela disponibilização de conteúdo não licenciado. O artigo 13 pretende mudar isso: foi criado para garantir que as plataformas digitais pagam aos autores pelo conteúdo que alojam, mesmo que seja carregado por utilizadores.

Sites como o YouTube e alguns fóruns online seriam obrigados a impedir a disponibilidade de conteúdo com direitos de autor (vídeos, livros, arte digital) para o qual não tenham uma licença. Em muitos casos, isto implicaria o uso de mecanismos automáticos.

“Não deve ser imposto às plataformas um regime de responsabilidade que as torne tão responsáveis como quem comete objectivamente uma infracção, ou seja, o utilizador que envia conteúdo não autorizado”, lê-se numa petição contra o artigo 13, disponibilizada no site da campanha, e que há hora de publicação deste artigo tinha sido assinada por cerca de 200 pessoas.

Entre os apoiantes estão também vários youtubers, como Inês Magalhães (criadora do canal Mathgurl, que explica conceitos matemáticos de forma divertida), Ângela Costa (do canal de beleza Angie Costa) e Paulo Borges (conhecido por Wuant), que em Novembro lançou uma crítica viral contra a directiva.

Do outro lado do debate, também há muitos autores a defender o artigo 13. Em Agosto, artistas e associações ligadas à indústria criativa em Portugal enviaram um apelo conjunto aos eurodeputados portugueses a apoiar a proposta da directiva dos direitos de autor. Para Paula Cunha, administradora da Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores, que está em causa é uma remuneração justa dos criadores em ambiente digital com a criação de legislação que leva as grandes tecnológicas como o YouTube a licenciar o conteúdo que disponibilizam. “É pois falso que exista qualquer ‘filtro de censura’”, frisou Cunha, na apresentação do apelo. A posição é a mesma de artistas internacionais.

Mas para os críticos o artigo 13 também pode vir reforçar a posição dominante de algumas empresas. O YouTube é uma das plataformas que já usa um sistema de filtragem para impedir conteúdo pirateado de circular. Contrariamente ao Google (que é dono do YouTube), a maioria das plataformas online não tem dados suficientes para educar sistemas de inteligência artificial que façam a filtragem.

Este ponto tem levado a directiva dos direitos de autor a estar empatada desde o final de Dezembro. O Conselho da União Europeia (no qual estão representados os governos dos vários Estados-membros) ainda não conseguiu definir a sua posição sobre a dimensão das empresas a abranger. A França e a Alemanha têm as posições mais fortes. Enquanto os franceses pretendem que todas as empresas estejam sujeitas às novas obrigações independentemente do tamanho, a Alemanha pretende uma fasquia de facturação de 20 milhões de euros. A proposta actual – que vai ser debatida em Conselho na sexta-feira – propõe um compromisso ao excluir empresas com uma facturação anual inferior a dez milhões de euros, que estejam a disponibilizar os serviços no espaço europeu há menos de três anos e não tenham mais de cinco milhões de visitantes mensais.

Caso não se chegue a acordo, a directiva pode não vir a ser aprovada de todo (com ou sem artigo 13). Para uma votação do texto final em Parlamento, que será o último passo do processo, é preciso que o Conselho apresente a sua proposta da directiva em trílogo (uma reunião entre Parlamento Europeu, o Conselho, e a Comissão Europeia). Sem uma reunião nas próximas semanas, torna-se impossível avançar antes das legislativas europeias. Nesse caso, um dos cenários possíveis é a Comissão Europeia desistir da directiva.

 Council ready to continue negotiations on the worst version of Article 13 yet
Tonight, the EU’s national governments adopted as their common position the deal struck by France and Germany on the controversial EU Copyright Directive that was leaked earlier this week.

While Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland and Luxembourg maintained their opposition to the text and were newly joined by Malta and Slovakia, Germany’s support of the “compromise” secretly negotiated with France over the last weeks has broken the previous deadlock.

This new Council position is actually more extreme than previous versions, requiring all platforms older than 3 years to automatically censor all their users’ uploads, and putting unreasonable burdens even on the newest companies (see my previous blog post analysing the deal).

The German Conservative–Social Democrat government is now in blatant violation of its own coalition agreement, which rejects upload filters against copyright infringement as disproportionate. This breach of coalition promises will not go down well with many young voters just ahead of the European elections in May. Meanwhile, prominent members of both German government parties have joined the protests against upload filters.

The deal in Council paves the way for a final round of negotiations with the Parliament over the course of next week, before the entire European Parliament and the Council vote on the final agreement. It is now up to you to contact your MEPs, call their offices in their constituencies and visit as many of their election campaign events as you can! Ask them to reject a copyright deal that will violate your rights to share legal creations like parodies and reviews online, and includes measures like the link tax that will limit your access to the news and drive small online newspapers out of business.

    Sábado a la noche y mientras definimos a dónde nos vamos de joda, no está mal sentarse a escribir (o a leer) unas reseñitas.
    Completé mi traspaso de comic-books a TPBs de The Invisibles, la serie que en 1994 lanzara Grant Morrison en el sello Vertigo. Para festejarlo, la pienso leer toda de nuevo, exceptuando por supuesto el Vol.7, que fue el que nunca completé en revistas y cuya reseña ya apareció acá en el blog el 20/05/13. Pero el Vol.7 es el final y hoy me toca hablar del principio.
    Un principio duro, muy cuesta arriba. El primer arco tiene más de 100 páginas en las que pasa MUY poco. Acá Morrison presenta el planteo general de la serie, recién a cuatro páginas del final nos brinda un primer pantallazo del elenco completo con el que va a trabajar, y todo el resto está centrado en la iniciación de Dane McGowan, un chico rebelde y kilombero, elegido por los Invisibles para convertirse en Jack Frost. El encargado de convertir a este adolescente sublevado en un soldado de King Mob será Tom O´Bedlam y en la gran mayoría de las escenas sólo veremos la interacción entre Dane y Tom, que por momentos se hace MUY aburrida. Hay conceptos copados, hay diálogos ingeniosos y hay pequeñas chispas de acción. Pero en general, resulta denso, estirado, falto de dirección. Y encima el dibujante es Steve Yeowell, un mediocre sin alma, sin onda, sin talento, cuyo mejor trabajo vimos en la reseña del 28/05/13. Este probablemente sea de los peores trabajos de este dibujante británico al que (por motivos que no logro descifrar) Morrison siempre bancó a muerte.
    El segundo tramo se titula “Arcadia” y acá tenemos una dibujante mucho más presentable: la hoy consagrada Jill Thompson, a la que acá le hacen un grotesco gang bang entre el entintador y el colorista, para que se luzca poco. Pero Jill resiste, y claro, al lado de Yeowell esto es la Capilla Sixtina. A nivel argumento, también hay más sustancia. Pasan muchas más cosas. De hecho, pasan demasiadas cosas. Morrison se va de mambo e introduce una cantidad de elementos narrativos totalmente excesiva para una saguita de 96 páginas. Arcadia tiene mucha acción, viajes en el tiempo, varias secuencias narradas en paralelo, una infinidad de referencias literarias, los primeros hallazgos en materia de interacción entre los protagonistas, bizarreadas geniales como la aparición de la cabeza de Juan el Bautista cantando un tema de Dead or Alive (el clásico “You Spin Me”), y toda una arista de perversiones sexuales mezcladas con violencia extrema, cortesía del legendario Marqués de Sade. Evidentemente, acá Morrison deja en claro que esta serie no era para cualquier tipo de lectores y nos advertía que de verdad, en estas páginas podía pasar cualquier cosa. De hecho, en 1994 yo no había visto nunca en comics de DC escenas de sexo con sangre y torturas como las que dibuja acá Jill Thompson, por supuesto desenfatizadas, casi borroneadas por el trabajo del colorista Daniel Vozzo, al que le deseo cáncer en un testículo. Leída hoy, esta aventura barroca y pretenciosa llamada Arcadia tampoco me resulta satisfactoria, pero bueno, me consta que para el Vol.2 esto mejora bastante.
    Hace un año y una semana me tocó leer Poncho Fue (ver reseña del 02/02/18), la que hasta ahora es la obra más importante de Sole Otero. Ahora voy con un librito que recopila los chistes que Sole hacía para las redes sociales: Siempre la Misma Historia. Lo único que no me cerró del libro es que, en medio de decenas de chistes de Blancanieves, Caperucita, Pinocho y Ricitos de Oro, aparecen tres o cuatro chistes de Batman y Robin. ¿Por qué mezclar, de golpe, cuentos de hadas con superhéroes? ¿Y por qué un sólo superhéroe? En fin, vamos a lo importante, que es el talento de Sole para el humor gráfico, para condensar una pequeña situación humorística en una única imagen. Acá evidentemente garpa toda esa montaña de trabajos que realizó la autora en el campo de la ilustración. Pero además están buenas las ideas. Sole encara para el lado de la ucronía, de introducir en el contexto de los cuentos de hadas clásicos toda la temática de las redes sociales, los hipsters, la publicidad, el psicoanálisis, la inseguridad y la miseria que ganan los jubilados. De ese choque entre personajes y ambientación clásicos y problemáticas actuales, salen chispazos sumamente cómicos y bastante originales.
    El estilo de dibujo se parece bastante al de Poncho Fue, con ese trazo muy suelto, muy expresivo, ideal para ser coloreado con acuarelas, y con la novedad de que acá en vez de bares y calles porteñas, Sole dibuja bosques y palacios de reinos lejanos. Incluso cuando recurre a la secuencia, y arma una pequeña historieta con varias viñetas chiquitas, el grafismo está cuidado y se pone al servicio de contar esas mini-historias sin la menor dificultad. Recomiendo mucho Siempre la Misma Historia a los fans del comic humorístico, de los cuentos de hadas, de Sole Otero, o a los que estén buscando algo copado para regalarle a gente que habitualmente no consume historietas.
