The Green New Deal Is Here. And It's Great for Food & Farming!      Cache   Translate Page

Alexis Baden-Mayer

The Green New Deal (GND) has arrived! You can read the inspiring resolution here.

The GND is so good it speaks for itself. Among the several goals and projects deemed necessary to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, the GND includes:

(J) removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and reducing pollution, including by restoring natural ecosystems through proven low-tech solutions that increase soil carbon storage, such as preservation and afforestation

Now that we’ve passed the dangerous tipping point of 350 parts per million (ppm) carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (we’re at 410 ppm), we have to figure out a way to draw down that CO2—or we will continue to suffer the cascading impacts of global warming even after we’ve eliminated greenhouse gas emissions.

The safest and most effective way we have of doing this is to increase the carbon content of our soils in farmland, pasture land, forests, wetlands and coastal marine ecosystems. This can be done on working lands through regenerative organic agriculture techniques that increase fertility and control pests by replacing chemicals with management practices. These include holistic planned grazing, composting, no-till, cover cropping, diverse crop mixes and rotations, and the incorporation of crops that return nutrients and organic matter to the soil.

This is the piece of the puzzle that most climate activists and legislators are unaware of. That’s why it’s so important that this is included in the GND, and why we need to get Congress to support it!

But wait—there’s more! The GND also calls for:

(G) working collaboratively with farmers and ranchers in the United States to eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector as much as is technologically feasible, including—
(i) by supporting family farming;
(ii) by investing in sustainable farming and land use practices that increase soil health; and
(iii) by building a more sustainable food system that ensures universal access to healthy food

This is a plan for food and farming that could solve the economic crisis facing family farmers, the diet-driven health crisis, and the climate crisis—while also addressing the pollution and soil loss caused by industrial agriculture!

‘Supporting family farming’

We’re encouraged that “supporting family farming” is at the center of the GND’s plan to eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture.

With farm prices where they are now, family farms lose money with every bite of food we take. Thousands of farms are lost each year, and the situation is probably worse than reported.

As long as our country’s struggling family farmers teeter on the edge of foreclosure and bankruptcy, it’s going to be very difficult to prevent them from selling their land to developers or factory farms, or to get them to adopt climate-beneficial farming practices.

Any future legislation that attempts to implement the GND must begin with a program to end the loss of family farms by guaranteeing farmers fair prices from their buyers. As the National Farmers Union describes it, a fair price is “a return of the cost of production plus an opportunity for reasonable profit.” (For more on what “supporting family farming” could mean, read Elizabeth Henderson’s “Why Sustainable Agriculture Should Support a Green New Deal.”)

In addition to the sections of the resolution that are specific to agriculture and land use, the GND contains a number of mechanisms that would be useful in the transition from greenhouse gas- polluting industrial agriculture to climate-beneficial regenerative organic food and farming.

‘Millions of jobs’

The GND aims “to create millions of good, high-wage jobs and ensure prosperity and economic security for all people of the United States.”

How many of these jobs will be in agriculture? Eliminating pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture means farming without fossil fuels on smaller farms that send food shorter distances. It means replacing off-farm inputs (pesticides, synthetic fertilizers) with management-intensive practices for fertility and pest-control. It means replacing patented seeds from companies like Monsanto with locally adapted seeds from local breeders. It means getting animals out of factory farms and onto pasture. It means trading massive gas-guzzling tractors for vehicles powered by on-farm electricity and biofuels.

Each of these shifts will require more hands and, more importantly, more brains. Richard Heinberg estimates the shift might require as many as 50 million U.S. farmers.

Jobs, unionization & employment rights for all workers

The GND calls for treating workers right, including all workers in the food chain, by:

(H) guaranteeing a job with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations, and retirement security to all people of the United States;
(I) strengthening and protecting the right of all workers to organize, unionize, and collectively bargain free of coercion, intimidation, and harassment;
(J) strengthening and enforcing labor, workplace health and safety, anti-discrimination, and wage and hour standards across all employers, industries, and sectors

It’s easy to see how this would make a difference for farm workers who are left out of many important labor protections enjoyed by most other workers in this country.

Did you know that the food system is our country’s largest—and worst—employer? According to the Food Chain Workers Alliance 2016 report:

The U.S. food system has grown by 1.5 million more workers in the past five years and continues to be the largest employer in the country–employing a total of 21.5 million workers. That’s 14 percent, or 1 out of every 7 workers, of the nation’s workforce. At the same time, the U.S. food system is the worst employer in the country in terms of wages and working conditions, paying the lowest hourly median wage of $10. This leads to a higher rate of food insecurity for food workers compared to workers in all other industries. In fact, food workers use food stamps (SNAP benefits) at over the double the rate of all other US workers.

While most food system workers are U.S. born, a substantial number are immigrants, some of whom lack legal status. As Farm Aid reports:

Farmworker Justice estimates that 70-80 percent of farmworkers are immigrants (between half and three-quarters of whom are undocumented). The USDA however, has a slightly lower number, citing that about 60 percent of all agriculture workers are foreign born. These discrepancies speak to the veiled nature of the work, number of undocumented workers, and power inequities embedded in the industry. Crop production employs the most immigrants, as 85% of fruits and vegetables are harvested by hand.

Repairing ‘historic oppression’

The GND aims to:

(E) to promote justice and equity by stopping current, preventing future, and repairing historic oppression of indigenous communities, communities of color, migrant communities, deindustrialized communities, depopulated rural communities, the poor, low-income workers, women, the elderly, the unhoused, people with disabilities, and youth (referred to in this resolution as ‘‘frontline and vulnerable communities’’)

The “historic oppression” caused by the U.S. food system is well known. It begins with the Europeans’ theft of Western Hemisphere lands from Indigenous Nations and their enslavement of African Americans. As the Union of Concerned Scientists recently pointed out:

The Europeans who colonized North America stole land from a tremendous diversity of peoples and communities, each with their own sophisticated understanding of how to grow food and manage landscapes that, with few exceptions, allowed them to provide for their needs without degrading the soils, rivers, and forests on which they depended.

Beginning in the 1600s, [destructive European-style agriculture] was powered by forced labor: first with indentured servants from Europe, then increasingly with the labor of enslaved African people. … Following the abolition of slavery in 1865, sharecropping kept profits flowing while prolonging the servitude of many formerly enslaved people. At the same time, the footprint of colonial agriculture spread west along with a flood of settlers, enabled by the violent displacement of indigenous people, and extending the footprint of destructive agricultural practices.

The U.S. has never compensated Native Americans or African Americans for these crimes, and the impact has only been exacerbated. As Leah Penniman writes in “Farming While Black” (you can read a free excerpt here):

About 24 million Americans live under food apartheid, in which it’s difficult to impossible to access affordable, healthy food. This trend is not race-neutral. White neighborhoods have an average of four times as many supermarkets as predominantly Black communities. This lack of access to nutritious food has dire consequences for our communities. Incidences of diabetes, obesity, and heart disease are on the rise in all populations, but the greatest increases have occurred among people of color, especially African Americans and Native Americans.

Brutal racism—maiming, lynching, burning, deportation, economic violence, legal violence— ensured that our roots would not spread deeply and securely. In 1910, at the height of Black land ownership, 16 million acres of farmland—14 percent of the total—was owned and cultivated by Black families. Now less than 1 percent of farms are Black-owned.

Our Black ancestors were forced, tricked, and scared off land until 6.5 million of them migrated to the urban North in the largest migration in US history. This was no accident. Just as the US government sanctioned the slaughter of buffalo to drive Native Americans off their land, so did the United States Department of Agriculture and the Federal Housing Administration deny access to farm credit and other resources to any Black person who joined the NAACP, registered to vote, or signed any petition pertaining to civil rights. When Carver’s methods helped Black farmers be successful enough to pay off their debts, their white landlords responded by beating them almost to death, burning down their houses, and driving them off their land.

In her book, Penniman lists a number of policies the Northeast Farmers of Color Network has proposed to end racism in the food system. The policies serve five goals: 1) Real Food for Our People; 2) Dignity for Farm Workers; 3) Community-Based Farmer Training; 4) Economic Viability for Farmers; and 5) Reparations for Stolen Land and Wealth.

The GND resolution lays out a plan that has the potential to accomplish all of the these goals. But it’s success ultimately depends on us. Without a social movement to give it power and direction, the GND will fail. Please check out these actions you can take to help garner support for the GND.

All good drama needs a villain. Without one the drama tends not to function, and whether it is Richard III, or Joe Pesci in Goodfellas, we all love a villain. The reason we know football is more sophisticated than anything either the Bard or Hollywood ever produced, is that no one wears a black hat and everyone gets to pick their own personal villain. A decision that can be deferred indefinitely, and well beyond the final whistle. Friday night's drama was a pre-eminent exemplar in the realm of dramaturgy, where the role of villain changed hands several times, before the denouement was finally concluded, Gordian knot fashion, in the fifth minute of added-time. The travelling Yorkshire contingent picked their villain early on, as they rehearsed for the pantomime season yet to come, by booing Tyrone Mings, Villa's classy-looking debutant, and mostly stuck with him until they were offered a better candidate late in the game. As for the home crowd, they were confronted with multiple candidates to blame for Villa's abject early showing. Manager Smith, Kodjia, Taylor and Jedinak were all on the short-list, as Villa were totally outplayed by a team showing why they are strong promotion contenders, which they were determined to confirm by topping the table, and no one could deny that Villa were making them look pretty convincing. On eleven minutes United scored and a new candidate for villain number-one stepped forward in the person of referee Harrington, who pronounced that the ball had crossed the line, when he was in no position to make a decision of any certainty. He was certainly further away from from the goal line than he was when he decided he couldn't see Mings's or McGinn's shirts being pulled, later in the game. And, by the time the referee had imperiously waved away Kalinic's appeals that Sharp had kicked the ball out his hands, for his second goal, which seemed to secure the points for the Blades, the referee hardly deserved any benefit of the doubt. United made it three-nil nine minutes later, as Sharp, with a shove on Hutton and close-range header, completed his hat-trick. There looked to be no way back for Villa and even though they pressed, it all seemed futile, as I enjoyed a good sulk and started throwing toys out of the pram, figuratively speaking, that is. Villa had been poor and United had been better, but it couldn't be denied that some lousy decisions had made the scoreline far more emphatic than it should have been. Like the Baggies' handball goal in another crucial game, it seemed that referees' selective-purblindness was conspiring against us. When Mings scored with a towering header in front of the Holte, it looked like a consolation goal which crowned a fine debut, but it did seem that the Blades' players were blaming goalkeeper Henderson for it, when he'd done pretty well to keep out Hourihane's free-kick. Villa continued to press as United started to look uncertain. Even as Tammy nipped in for a tap-in at the far-post, it still looked like a consolation goal which only deserved celebrating as his history-making, Peter Withe-equaling, historical milestone. There was a few looks exchanged amongst the Villa contingent, suggesting the question: It couldn't, could it? With United getting men behind the ball, and with Villa's prior delivery in mind, it looked highly unlikely. However, it seemed that we had forgotten all about that well-known theatrical device, deus ex machina. For there, seemingly flown in for the purpose, was Andre Green, who had been planted by the football gods, to be perfectly placed to meet El Ghazi's perfect cross and bury it in United's net. The crowd roared. Billy Sharp looked gutted. Villa fans smiled and the Sheffield United fans shook their heads. Dean Henderson took the blame. It had been football drama at its best. I moaned about the referee all the way home. UTV!

The Black and White Minstrels (1958-1978)      Cache   Translate Page

The Black And White Minstrel Show nostalgically harked back to the popular music hall minstrel show and was an endless flow of traditional American 'Deep South' and Country songs, usually performed with the men in blackface, and with ladies in lavish costumes. In between sets there were comedians to amuse the audience. The combination between white dancers with black-faced singers was thought by George Inns, the program’s producer, to make visually striking television. (The original Minstrels wore red make-up which made them look black on camera.) In the 19th century minstrel shows were the leading vehicle for popular music in the U.S. The banjo music influenced the development of ragtime, and the clog dancing evolved into tap dance.

Two popular forms of entertainment merged: the popular acts of white actors giving comedic costumed impersonations of black people between acts of plays or during circuses; and black musicians who sang, with banjo accompaniment, in city streets. The minstrel show was born. The "father of American minstrelsy" was Thomas Dartmouth "Daddy" Rice (1808–60), who between 1828 and 1831 developed a song-and-dance routine in which he impersonated an old, crippled black slave, dubbed Jim Crow. This routine achieved immediate popularity, and Rice performed it with great success in the U.S. and Great Britain, where he introduced it in 1836. Soon there were bands of entertainers who eagerly took on the minstrel guise including a group called the Christy Minstrels, headed by the actor Edwin P. Christy (1815–62).

The Christy Minstrels set the pattern for Minstrel stage shows. The entertainers were seated in a semicircle on the stage, with a tambourine player (Mr. Tambo) at one end and a performer on the bone castanets (Mr. Bones) at the other; the singing of songs with harmonized choruses; the exchange of jokes between the end men and the performer in the centre seat (Mr. Interlocutor). To conclude the bill there was always a special variety act. After the Civil War black entertainers (usually in blackface makeup) became more prominent. The most famous of the black minstrel’s composers was James Bland (1854–1911). The "Nigger Minstrel" entertainment tradition was kept alive in the music-halls and vaudeville but its popularity declined after the First World War as audiences craved more up-beat entertainment.

The Black and White Mistrals ran from June 1958 until July 1978 on BBC1 and featured the Mitchell Minstrels with solo performers Tony Mercer, Dai Francis, and John Boulter. Leslie Crowther, George Chisholm, and Stan Stennett provided the humour and glamour and choreography was graciously given by The Television Toppers (formation dancers). The variety show slotted into a regular 45 minute show on Saturday evenings. The variety series could almost always guarantee an audience of at least 16 million, but frequently managed to top 18 million viewers. At a time when the variety show was a popular television genre for the whole family, The Black And White Minstrel Show established itself as one of the world's greatest musical programmes on television. At the time there was no thought given to the impropriety of portraying coloured people.

George Mitchell, (1917- 2002)

He was Scots and came from Stirling and was a lifelong Glasgow Ranger’s supporter George was a pianist before the War and afterwards formed the George Mitchell Choir for BBC radio. After several name changes the ensemble became the George Mitchell Minstrels in 1957.

George Chisholm, (1915-1997)

A trombonist from Glasgow, he was comic genius and used his music to raise a laugh. In his spare time George was a first class jazz trombonist who was well respected as a musician and recorded with the legendary Fats Waller in London in 1938. George had worked with the Goons and enjoyed comedy routines so when he was invited to join the B&W cast in 1961 he jumped at the opportunity.

Margo Henderson (1929 - 2009) and Leslie Crowther (1933-1996)

Margo Henderson was a Scottish comedian and impressionist Leslie Crowther (1933-1996) Leslie Crowther was from England but had been a Bevin boy and was sent to Rothesay in the Firth of Clyde during the war. There the young Crowther stayed with his aunt and socked up the West Coast humour of the Scots which made his a very competent performer.

He is best remembered for his renditions of Al Jolson. Francis appeared in every Minstrel Show throughout its 21-year television run, and in almost 6,500 performances over 10 years at the Victoria Palace Theatre, for which seven million tickets were sold.

John Boulter (tenor)

Eric Whitley
Eric replaced John Boulter on the 1964 tours of Australia and New Zealand.

The Comedians

The comedians acted as "fillers" between the slick song and dance routines. The list was impressive with Leslie Crowther, George Chisolm, Stan Sennett (Harry Silver Cross Roads), Margo Henderson, Don Maclean (Crackerjack and toured Australia in 1971), Keith Harris (Orville and Cuddles), and Sir Lenny Henry. Sir Lenny later expressed regret in appearing in the show.

Stage Show

Robert Luff's production opened at the Victoria Palace Theatre in 1969 and established itself in The Guinness Book Of Records as the stage show seen by the largest number of people. After leaving the Victoria Palace in 1972, the show toured almost every year to various big city and seaside resort theatres around the UK,. This continued each summer until 1987, when a final tour of three Butlins resorts (Maidenhead, Bognor Regis and Barry Island) saw the last official Black and White Minstrel Show on stage. Touring companies did continue the traditions until 1992 and now there are retro Minstrel style shows packing them in.

B&W Australian Tour
There were two major tours in 1964 and 1969. The BBC show was very popular with Australian audiences.

Culture Sensitivities

Many felt that a large part of "minstrel humour" was based on caricaturing black people and depicting African Americans as both stupid and credulous. This image was felt to be insensitive and inappropriate in an increasingly multi-racial and multi-cultural Britain. Ultimately, its removal from the air coincided with the demise of the popularity of the variety genre on British television. The show was attacked as racist, a "cultural obscenity", by some, from the early 1960s. However the programme was not generally perceived as racist at the time by people outside the United States, and it was sold to many parts of the world, including Australia and many African countries. Under increasing pressure the show tried a 'whiteface' variant in the late 1960s entitled Masquerade and swapping the black faces with masks, with a resulting loss in viewing figures.

The boss praises Gini for playing well despite illness. Gini Wijnaldum was superb against Bournemouth yesterday, and yet he almost didn’t play. Suffering a bad illness, it was touch and go for whether the Dutchman would be available, Klopp admitted. “We had difficulties”, the manager said of his midfield options. “Before the West Ham game, we had Hendo [Jordan Henderson] out, Gini out, and then Milly [James Milner] was not in the team hotel because he was ill, but he played. Then we didn’t perform that well and people were talking about him. “Then last night Gini was not in the team hotel because he had pretty much everything you don’t want to have the night before a game! ”That’s the news you get in the morning, before the last session of the week. "Accomplishments"

At home: It is perhaps astounding that Trainspotting, a film dripping in Scottish argot, based on an Irvine Welsh novel (not an obvious adaptation), about heroin addicts, would become a hit, but there it is. It isn't just a tent pole of 90s pop culture, but made stars out of Ewan McGregor, Kelly Macdonald, and director Danny Boyle, whose fearless visual style managed to capture Welsh's metaphors while still allowing the raw truth of addiction to be depicted. McGregor rummaging around the Worst Toilet in Scotland cannot be deleted from memory. A large part of the appeal is the soundtrack, which is perhaps better remembered than the film itself (something it shares with Garden State, I think), but that's definitely not the only thing going for it. Though all the characters are screw-ups of the highest order, all but Begbie (let's call him the villain) are sympathetic, and we're well happy to spend a couple of hours listening to McGregor's rendition of Welsh's acid narration as their comedies and tragedies play out.

They say you can't go home again, but T2 Trainspotting manages it. It can't be the icon the original film was - that's really a matter of time and generation - but it's fun catching up with the crew 20 years on (yes, they somehow survived). Definitely of a piece with the original, it has Boyle trying lots of visual tricks, a good balance of comedy and drama, at least one early disgusting moment, a similar musical vibe, and revisits the sins of the first film. It has its own story to tell, about recovery, the power of addiction, and forgiveness, but I think just the right amount of call backs to make old fans smile right to the end. I might have to watch myself lest I start singing that "1690" song (from the BlackKklansman sequence). And if you're afraid it's all going to end in the bleakest of ways - because SUBJECT MATTER - I can assure you it doesn't, though you'll have a lot of scares along the way.

Let's make it a trilogy, shall we? Filth is, like Trainspotting, an Irvine Welsh novel adaptation, and it seems Trainspotting is the template for how you should carry an Irvine Welsh novel to the big screen. Hallucinatory moments, savagely funny voice-over, fast-paced editing, the whole lot. Unlike Trainspotting, the lead character isn't all that sympathetic though. James McAvoy plays Bruce Roberston, a corrupt Edinburgh cop who cares more about his promotion than solving crimes, but his ambitions might be waylaid by a mental breakdown. McAvoy is well supported by a cast full of recognizable faces (even when a character doesn't actually have lines), most prominently Jim Broadbent* as a psychiatrist with a giant cranium, Imogen Poots as maybe the only good person on the police force, John Sessions as the restrained but bigoted boss, Shirley Henderson as the victim of Bruce's dirty phone calls, and Downton's Joanne Froggatt as perhaps the only purity in his life. So it's unfortunate that the movie doesn't always work. The ending is messy. And lot of the visual inventiveness comes from images that seem random (unless you read the book, presumably). I like many of the moments - as dark and offensive as it gets at times - but the adaptation from the novel could have used a bit more work.

It was interesting watching Michael Curtiz's The Adventures of Robin Hood with people essentially raised on Mel Brooks' Men in Tights because it seemed more like an archaeological artifact to them. So much of that movie is taken from Adventures that it's almost a remake with more jokes rather than a parody or spoof. Anyway, the 1938 classic is like a storybook come to life - it gives you all the story beats you know, has Robin Hood laughing in what you could call camp acting, and is almost impossibly colorful. None of the gritty realism they try to do these days. There's still a high body count in the first act, but it's a bloodless affair. Errol Flynn has a lot of fun, it shows, and there's plenty of swashbuckling action to keep one entertained as we go from set piece to set piece. It's interesting that the Sheriff of Nottingham is sidelined in favor of the more sinister Guy of Gisbourne (Basil Rathbone, we're in good hands), though I could use a taller Little John. The most influential Robin Hood movie in film history, but it may seem a little shallow to modern eyes.

I almost saw Bicycle Thieves in a Film History class, but I was exhausted that day (college life) and slept through it. Not a comment on the film, I had my head on the desk before the first five minutes. So I was happy to finally see it this week, though it's really one of those pieces of cinema that's been quoted several times over the years (most recently - and extensively - in an episode of Master of None). Like its namesake, Bicycle Thieves creeps up on you. It shows you systemic poverty in post-war Italy, with characters struggling for subsistence but still giving in to costly temptation. And you're fine. It evokes deep poignant ironies like the need for a bicycle to get a job but money to get a bicycle, and the victim turning thief as one might expect. And you're fine. It has a great relationship between father and son (non-actors both, which seems incredible given their performances) and you're still fine. Or so you think. In the last few minutes, it all hits you, not in what is said, but what is left unsaid. The thieves have taken this man's bicycle, and with it his livelihood, and finally, his dignity. And if you don't feel for him, you feel for his son, sole true witness to the unraveling of his father. And suddenly, I'm not fine anymore. FAVORITE OF THE WEEK

Truffaut's Les quatre cents coups (The 400 Blows) is cousin to his early short film Les Miston (The Brats), similarly semi-autobiographical and about young boys misbehaving. And it's incredibly well-observed and truthful in its depiction of young people, and how they might bear the brunt of the generation gap. Antoine is on the young side of adolescence, disinterested in school, prone to truancy, and at home, an annoyance to his parents. Without ever glorifying his behavior, the film puts us on his side as he interacts with uncaring authority figures at school, home and the justice system. This may be the first and best film about systemic ageism (seniors like to think ageism victimizes them, but having worked with youth groups for decades, I can tell you young people get it as bad or worse). Every kid has felt the adult world's unfairness, but as they grow up and become unfair themselves, they tend to forget how it used to be. Truffaut doesn't and does his best to remind us. A note on the title: In French (and this isn't an expression I've ever heard in Canada), "les 400 coups" is part of an expression that means "raising hell", but it's also a pun implying "blows" or "knocks", all the things beating Antoine down (and yet not corporeal punishment, which would have muddied the point). The English title gets the pun, but doesn't rotate back to the "mischief" meaning of "coups".

One of the few books I remember reading off my dad's shelf when I was a kid was James Clavell's King Rat, based on the author's own POW experiences in the South Pacific. It makes an engaging film, with George Segal as the title character, an enterprising prisoner who essentially runs the camp through capitalist ventures and scheming, rank be damned. It's hard not to admire King's ingenuity, but there's a cold, pragmatic callousness to him as well, and under the surface, there's an indictment of the Western way of life for which the soldiers have fought for. Corruption of ideals. False friendships (though there's an ambiguity to King's final rejection - he might be freeing his friend from an actionable association). Cruel manipulation. The novel ended with rats eating each other, after all. The film belies its 1965 release date with its setting and (often gorgeous) black and white, so I think they could have gotten away with that final image. They instead go with something more actorly, which is fine.

Operation Crossbow's best idea is to give Sophia Loren top billing despite her not being in the movie very much - I'll let you find out why. Otherwise, it's a bit of a Frankenstein's monster. The first act feels like a slow procedural, setting up a mission to destroy WWII Germany's rocket program by taking it at least three steps before a normal "special ops" movie would. It also means at least half the movie is in German, for realism's sake. I'm happy to see women play important roles on both sides of the conflict however. The second act is the best. Things finally get going and there's plenty of Mission: Impossible type tension as things start to go wrong, with unexpected results. The third act feels more like standard movie fare, with lots of gunfire, explosions and a ticking clock. There are really three different movies hidden in there. Operation Crossbow needed to settle down and pick one of them.

The Caine Mutiny gives you a lot of context before getting to the heart of its subject matter, so by the time Bogart's Captain Queeg rows in, you're familiar with ship personnel and operations, and you've experienced more than just his command style. He's a tragic figure as well as a villain, but the film maintains an ambiguity about his competence that perhaps reflects your own relationship to authority. By the time we get to the third act, we've probably chosen a side, and we'd be punching the air along with the other characters the same way we might have in A Few Good Men during the JAG sequence. But that's not the final word, is it? The climax resolves a bit after that, giving the characters - and the audience that was, in a way, part of the plot - much more to think about. Things are not so cut and dried as they might be in a more formulaic movie. What attitude do we take in the epilogue, knowing what we now know? I've seen the influence this film has had on a lot of stories put to the screen since (including a couple of standout Star Trek episodes), but it takes nothing away from the original. If it doesn't get a perfect score, it's that the romantic subplot is totally surplus to requirements.

I've seen a number of Gene Kelly movies at this point, and I'm always impressed by his physical prowess, but do all his characters have to be jackasses? I'm often wondering if that's him, his type-casting, what the era considered to be a leading man, or what. And yet, he always finds a way to redeem himself by the end. He's the cad that only needs the love of a good woman, and he'll mend his ways. Maybe I've just answered my own question. That's a fantasy for at least some women. I may also be exaggerating, but Anchors Aweigh is certainly in that mold, and worse than most. It's a bit too long for a sailors-on-leave musical, with many sequences you could cut without affecting the story structurally or emotionally. But could we really lose the first ever live action-cartoon integration scene in cinema history? (Oh, and Tom and Jerry?! I didn't expect celebrity toons! And wow, Jerry's a real good dancer too!) I guess it also takes time to give Kelly a proper ethical out to go after his buddy's girl (Frank Sinatra was never so thin nor so timid). Bonus Dean Stockwell as a kid; that's so weird.

Dr. Seuss wrote a live action musical that was made in 1953 - The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T. It's quite something. The movie takes a sort of Wizard of Oz approach, with young Bart having a nightmare about his tyrannical piano teacher, translating him, his mom, and the plumber/mom's romantic interest into a fantasy world the likes of which Seuss may well have drawn. It's entirely loopy and the songs aren't half-bad. Some of them even have Seuss' trademark nonsense rhymes. Those two roller skaters who share one beard are definitely a Seussism. The very best sequence, for me, was the basement dungeon number where the non-pianists have improvised all manner of instrument. It's amazing. Bottom line: A fun, colorful all-ages fantasy filled with dream logic and tapping into something you don't need to be a child to get. Anything that's a chore is a drag, man!

Blithe Spirit, based on a Noel Coward play, is more or less a four-hander in which Rex Harrison's stiff upper lip is unmoved by the arrival of his dead wife's ghost after a catastrophic seance. Thing is, he's remarried, and the ladies don't really get along. I'm really not to sure about Kay Hammond's green make-up as the ghost, or her drunken slur, for that matter, but you get used to these conventions. Despite the macabre streak in the story, it's all quite amusing (and saucy! they couldn't say THAT in an American film of the time!), and it only gets in trouble when it overdoes it. The Margaret Rutherford's muscled medium is quite kooky, but I find a lot of her physical business a bit trying. Similarly, while I enjoyed the crazy (if not entirely unexpected) turns the film took in the third act, there's an awful sense by that point that wit has entirely replaced emotion, and it's hard to care when no one onscreen seems to. Fun, but not entirely successful.

I'm not sure Poltergeist knows what poltergeist are, but that's not my main gripe with the 1982 horror classic (great title, if anything). What bugs me is that it looks great, is well shot for creepiness, and its iconic status in pop culture can't be disputed, but frustratingly, I can't give it a favorable review. For one thing, it treats the supernatural in the same way Close Encounters treats UFOlogy (note Spielberg's hands on approach to producing this thing). The ghosts are essentially extra-dimensional aliens, and the epileptic strobing could be right out of an alien encounter movie (compare it to E.T., for example). Which is fine. Horror tropes reexamined through the lens of science-fiction. But after what normally would be the climax, there's an extra reel, and that one IS from a straight horror film. It was aliens from the beyond, and now it's Indian burial ground revenants, and who the heck knows anymore? It's a little like the idea that you'd call in a psychic investigator, and later, you'd call in ANOTHER psychic expert - isn't that really the same role? - who contradicts the first one, but not really... Was that all a manifestation of the struggle between director Tobe Hooper and his overlord?

Eugène Bigel a Caiena

Eugène Bigel a Caiena

Being the diary of a schoolboy in the South Atlantic (1936), relat d'un viatge que havia fet dos anys abans amb son pare a l'Argentina i al Senegal. Abandonà l'escola i sa mare, aleshores retirada, l'educà a casa. New directions in european art and letters. En aquesta època publicà nombrosos textos anarquistes, com ara Peace and disobedience (1946); On this side nothing (1949), fortament influenciat per Albert Camus, autor a qui admirava; i Authority and delinquency in the modern state. A criminological approach to the problem of power (1950). Lectures on the sociology of sex from the standpoint of anarchism, basat en un cicle de conferències que realitzà al London Anarquist Group (LAG, Grup Anarquista de Londres). The Alex Comfort song book. Life and Letters To-Day, New Statesman and Nation, Now, One World, Peace News, Public Opinion, Resistance, etc. A més de les obres citades, és autor de No such Liberty (1941), Three new poets (1942, amb Roy McFadden i Ian Serraillier), Into Egypt. Jacques Roux

Belmonte Will Bowl for 10th Major Title as Top Qualifier for PBA Tournament of Champions Stepladder Finals      Cache   Translate Page

FAIRLAWN, Ohio  – As top qualifier for the stepladder finals of the 54th PBA Tournament of Champions, four-time PBA Player of the Year Jason Belmonte of Australia will have to win one match in Sunday’s live FOX telecast for his 10th PBA Tour major which would tie him for the majors record with PBA Hall of Famers Pete Weber and Earl Anthony.

The finals telecast will air Sunday on FOX at 4:30 p.m. ET from AMF Riviera Lanes.

The 35-year-old two-hander from compiled a 16-8 match play record and 10,097 42-game pinfall total, including match play bonus pins, at the end of Friday’s final match play round to finish 224 pins ahead of four-time tour winner Marshall Kent of Yakima, Wash., who qualified second for the finals with a 9,873 pinfall and 18-6 match play record.

“When you have a big lead you can get complacent so my goal was just to keep a good steady pace,” said Belmonte who owns 18-time PBA Tour titles and averaged 229 for the tournament. “If I could just bowl some solid 220s or 230s and win a few matches along the way, the other guys were going to have to shoot 250s and 260s consistently to catch me and that’s hard to do.”

For Belmonte and whoever ends up as his opponent in the title match there will be more on the line than winning a major title as the Tournament of Champions will be the first of four tournaments during the 2019 Go Bowling! PBA Tour season that will pay a $1 million bonus if a player bowls a 300 game in the title match.

Belmonte will also be trying for his third Tournament of Champions title, which would tie him with Jason Couch and Mike Durbin for most titles in PBA’s signature tournament that requires a player to own a PBA title to compete. Belmonte, who finished fourth in 2018, won the Tournament of Champions back-to-back in 2014 and 2015.

“I just have to do my job to the best of my ability, hit my target and bowl the 10 best possible frames I can,” Belmonte said. “The priority is to win the tournament, but hopefully I can start with at least a few strikes to make it exciting.”

The 26-year-old Kent will be making his first telecast appearance of 2019 and will be trying for his first major title.

Also making his first telecast appearance of the season, 26-year-old EJ Tackett of Bluffton, Ind., a 12-time tour winner including the 2017 Tournament of Champions, won his last seven matches of the final eight-game match play round Friday to take the No. 3 seed for the finals. The 2016 PBA Player of the Year finished with a 14-10 match play record and 9,766 pinfall.

Qualifying fourth for the finals was three-time tour winner Josh Blanchard of Mesa, Ariz., with a 13-10-1 match play record and 9,658 pinfall.

Sean Lavery-Spahr of Pasadena, Texas, who qualified fifth for the finals will try to duplicate what 2018 Tournament of Champions winner Matt O’Grady did last season and that is qualify for the tournament through a pre-tournament qualifier and win all four stepladder matches for the title. Lavery-Spahr, a four-time PBA regional winner, had a 10-13-1 record and 9,608 pinfall.

Why We Need Special Prosecutors....It's Not For Harassment      Cache   Translate Page
Ken Starr, Archibald Cox, Leon Jaworski, Lawrence Walsh, and Robert Mueller. These names are almost as familiar as the Presidents they investigated. What does that say about the role of Special Prosecutors, the power the have, t
he evolution of their role in history and how we should see them today?

When a lesser know name, John Henderson was the special prosecutor pursuing Ulysses S. Grant in 1875 we didn’t have a 24/7 new cycle, and hundreds of former US Attorneys, commenting on his every move.

So once again, the question has to be asked, does this important safeguard of democracy even work in our current political, media and partisan environment.

Of course the best way to know is to examine the history. That what Andrew Coan does in Prosecuting the President: How Special Prosecutors Hold Presidents Accountable and Protect the Rule of Law

Adam Smith’s Beautiful Reductio ad Absurdum, by David Henderson      Cache   Translate Page

I’m about to leave for home from an excellent Liberty Fund colloquium on “Free Trade and Liberty” in La Jolla. Thanks to Liberty Fund, discussion leader Sandra Peart, organizers Pierre Lemieux and Liberty Fund’s Hans Eicholz, and the other participants.

One of the readings is from Adam Smith’s An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. Here’s a great passage where he does a really nice reductio ad absurdum to make the point that, for a given quality, it makes sense to buy where it’s cheapest:

The natural advantages which one country has over another in producing particular commodities are sometimes so great that it is acknowledged by all the world to be in vain to struggle with them. By means of glasses, hotbeds, and hot walls, very good grapes can be raised in Scotland, and very good wine too can be made of them at about thirty times the expense for which at least equally good can be brought from foreign countries. Would it be a reasonable law to prohibit the importation of all foreign wines merely to encourage the making of claret and burgundy in Scotland? But if there would be a manifest absurdity in turning towards any employment thirty times more of the capital and industry of the country than would be necessary to purchase from foreign countries an equal quantity of the commodities wanted, there must be an absurdity, though not altogether so glaring, yet exactly of the same kind, in turning towards any such employment a thirtieth, or even a three-hundredth part more of either.

A few years ago, I was in a Staples to buy paper clips. A customer younger than me was in the same aisle, picking up boxes of paper clips and throwing them down in disgust. An employee approached him and asked if there was something wrong.

“None of these paper clips are made in America,” he said. “Do you have any paper clips made in America?”

“No,” answered the employee.

“Well, are there any stores in town that sell paper clips made in America?” said the customer.

“I’m pretty sure there aren’t,” said the employee. “Pretty much all paper clips are foreign-made.”

The man walked out in disgust. I picked up one of the boxes of paper clips and went to the cash register, where I bought them

Then it occurred to me that I should do the same thing at other stores that this man did at Staples. I thought: I’ll go to Safeway, pick up a bunch of bananas and ask the store employee where they’re from. When she says Honduras or some other foreign country, I’ll throw them down in disgust. Then, since I’ll be on a roll, I’ll go to Starbuck’s and say that I want coffee made in America. When they tell me that they don’t have any, I’ll leave the store in disgust.

Did You Catch All These Orange Is the New Black Actors in Russian Doll?      Cache   Translate Page

The new Netflix series Russian Doll is the latest in the streaming giant's comedy arsenal. Following a woman who finds herself stuck reliving her 36th birthday party over and over - and dying at the end of every night - the series already has people buzzing. It turns out, though, that it shares quite a bit in common with its fellow Netflix comedy Orange Is the New Black: namely, several cast members!

Russian Doll stars Natasha Lyonne, aka Orange Is the New Black's snarky, sometimes seductive, sometimes romantic Nicky Nichols. Lyonne is a supporting cast member no more: not only does she star as Russian Doll's intrepid protagonist Nadia Vulvokov, but she also created the show herself. It's a new horizon for Lyonne, but it's always so much easier to blaze a new path when you're already surrounded by familiar and friendly faces. That's just what Lyonne has done with her cast, reuniting enough actors from Orange Is the New Black that you'll start wondering where all the prison jumpsuits went.

One of the most easily recognizable faces in the cast? That would be Dascha Polanco (above), who plays the secretive Beatrice. Polanco has been one of Orange Is the New Black's main cast members since the Netflix series began in 2013, and she was promoted to series regular in 2015. Her character, Daya Diaz, has definitely had some ups and downs over the years, including secretly having a baby with one of the prison's officers. OITNB was her first professional acting gig, but Polanco has since branched out, appearing in feature films such as Joy and The Perfect Match, as well as tackling a more dramatic role in the FX crime drama American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace.

Rebecca Henderson (below, left), another Orange Is the New Black alumna, also pops up on Russian Doll. Here, she plays Lizzy, one of Nadia's best friends. On OITNB, she played Alice Denning. Although Alice was a somewhat minor character, she was connected to the main antagonists of the show's sixth season: she was the mother of the Denning sisters, the two feuding sisters who try their best to create chaos at the prison throughout the season, but eventually wind up killing each other instead.

Even guest stars from Orange Is the New Black have been tapped to appear on Russian Doll. For instance, as Lyonne's Nadia struggles through a Groundhog Day-esque time loop that always ends in her dying, she discovers she's not the only one with this bizarre problem: Alan Zaveri, played by Charlie Barnett (above, right), is Beatrice's boyfriend who is suffering a similar mysterious, repetitive fate. Barnett appeared as Wes Driscoll on the 2017 OITNB episode "The Reverse Midas Touch."

Recycling actors is actually a pretty common practice, with many actors starring in multiple Netflix shows or working with the same writers or directors over and over again. While Russian Doll is only in its first season, we'd guess that, if it continues on, we'll probably see more Orange Is the New Black stars joining the party again!
