Gang of serial killers murdering youg white men in the U.S      Cache   Translate Page

It's suspected the group might have already claimed hundreds of victims. Yet police agencies are uninterested in ferreting out the truth and instead write the killings off as accidents or undetermined. So say three retired NYPD detectives and a criminal-justice professor who have been investigating the deaths. The Daily Beast introduces the story, writing that on "the evening of Dec. 15, 2016, Dakota James called his friend Shelley in a panic." "He was cold, disoriented, and scared out of his mind, wandering the streets of downtown Pittsburgh, trying to find someone - anyone - who would help him," the site continues. "'I don't know where I am,' he told her, sobbing. 'I'm so cold. Please help me. I'm lost.'" James said the cops wouldn't help him. Confused, he told Shelley (her last name is kept confidential) he was on Pittsburgh's North Side when the cellphone location services he'd enabled with her put him on the South Side. What happened next was equally odd. Shelley drove to James' location, at a Springhill Suites on Water Street. "As she pulled up to the hotel," writes the Beast, "she saw a dark SUV in the wrong lane, facing the wrong direction. And Dakota was walking out of the hotel and straight toward the SUV." "'I pulled up not even 10 feet away from the SUV,' she said. 'I said, 'Dakota!' He turns, looks back then comes over to me, got in my car, and we left,'" the Beast also relates. James didn't appear drunk, Shelley says; he was walking straight and wasn't slurring words. Yet he didn't know how he'd wound up on the street and had lost four hours, between heading to some bars with coworkers at 7:15 p.m. and calling Shelley at approximately 11:15. So she suspected he'd been drugged. Yet James didn't want to talk much about the incident and the next day dismissed it as a bad hangover. Shelley might have done the same - except that James disappeared five weeks later. Forty days after that was found dead, floating in the Ohio River. Nonetheless, the Beast writes, his death was ruled an accidental drowning by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office. But a team of retired detectives and a gang expert believe he's one of about 100 victims of the Smiley-Face Killers, an alleged organized gang of serial killers that communicates on the dark web, with cells in dozens of cities across the United States. An additional 250 cases might be connected, but they can't prove it, they say. James fits the profile of the other suspected victims: smart, athletic, popular, college-age white men who went out drinking and never came home, they say. More recently, some alleged victims have been openly , like Dakota. Like him, weeks later, their bodies were discovered in lakes or rivers with smiley-face or other graffiti specifically connected to the group spray-painted nearby. So far they've connected about 70 deaths with similar graffiti nearby. About 30 of the men, including Dakota James, had the date- drug GHB in their system, according to the autopsy reports. "Dakota was clearly murdered," Kevin Gannon, a retired New York City police sergeant who has devoted his life to solving these cases, told The Daily Beast. There were a number of indications this was so, including what appeared to be ligature marks around James' neck, indicating strangulation (the Beast provides more detail). Moreover, it's now theorized that the SUV occupant(s) might have been stalking James or doing a test run and that he might have disappeared Dec. 15 if Shelley hadn't arrived when she did. Gannon's quest to track down what he calls "one of the most dangerous domestic terrorist groups in the United States" began in February 1997, when he was an NYPD detective investigating the death of 20-year-old white man Patrick McNeil, who was found floating in the East River. Two more men the same approximate age were found dead during the next 15 months. Gannon retired in 2001, but continued investigating the cases after promising McNeil's that he wouldn't stop till he found her son's killer(s). He enlisted the aid of his former partner, Anthony Duarte and, after watching a news report about similar deaths in the Midwest, also teamed with Dr. Lee Gilbertson, a criminal-justice professor and gang expert at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. It's certainly a curious case. "The so-called Smiley Face murders first burst on to the public scene in April 2008 when Gannon, Duarte, and Gilbertson held a news conference in New York City about the deaths," the Beast tells us. Yet they know far more about the group today. "'The level of sophistication of the group is a lot greater than we'd imagined,' the Beast relates Gannon as saying. 'Now we know they communicate with each other on the dark web. We know there's surveillance and counter-surveillance.'" Moreover, "Each city has its own cohort or cell, said Gilbertson." The professor emphasizes that at issue is a serial-killing gang, with perhaps 12 individuals per cell. Five will go and commit a murder; the next time it's a different five. It's continually evolving, too, as members age out and leave the fold. Consequently, "They're constantly recruiting," he says In fact, the Beast also quotes Gilbertson as saying, "Years ago, we were on their dark-web webpage but it was asking us to turn on a video camera so they could see who was about to type in the password and there's no way we were doing that. And we didn't even have the password. We'd just been given their URL, so [we] went to it because we were told that's how they communicate." So how can this group continue operating? Gannon and his team have evidence and suspects, but Gilbertson says that since law enforcement won't investigate the cases as murders, there's no pressure on gang members to snitch. They can remain on the Dark Web and in the shadows. Of course, law enforcement states the evidence is insufficient to reopen the cases. And while it's not politically correct to say (just correct to say), homosexuals do live a higher-risk lifestyle in general, sometimes frequenting seedy bars, attending orgies, and consorting with perhaps dangerous people. Yet it appears that many if not most victims were not homosexual. Then there's the elephant in the room. Is it a coincidence that every alleged victim is not only young and male, but white? Were there even the allegation that perhaps hundreds of black men were being murdered by a serial-killer gang, it would be huge national news (and likely blamed on the Trump era). Yet the closest the Beast comes to even mentioning the clear racial angle is, "The motives for the murders range from gang initiation to hate crimes, Gannon said." This brings something to mind. In the Rotherham child -gang scandal, the sexual abuse and torture of approximately 1,400 white British girls by primarily Muslim perpetrators was allowed to continue for 16 years because cowardly British authorities were afraid of "racism" accusations. They even went so far as to force a whistleblower into "diversity training," warning her that she must never again implicate Muslim men. So assuming Gannon's theory is correct, could the same phenomenon be evident here? Could American authorities be turning a "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" blind eye to these killings for fear of political correctness' bite? We already know this fear causes reluctance in many authorities to label "hate crimes" against whites just that. Yet Gannon is undeterred. "He has mortgaged his home and maxed out his credit cards trying to solve these cases," reports the Beast. Reflecting his dedication, victim Patrick McNeil's , 73-year-old Jackie, told the Beast that Gannon "is amazing.... On the anniversaries he'll call and say, 'I'm thinking about you.' I consider him a good friend." However valid Gannon's theory, it will finally be getting more attention. He, Duarte, Gilbertson, and another retired NYPD detective, Mike Donovan, will now be the stars of a television show, "Oxygen's Smiley Face Killers: The Hunt for Justice (video below), a new six-part limited series that premieres Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.," reports the Beast. "'It's been a difficult road and that's why we had to choose TV, to go to the court of public opinion,'" the Beast quotes Gannon as saying. "'We felt like there was no other option.'" The team hopes the publicity will inspire authorities to act.

(Has mi día)

Re: Wins and Lessons with the Cavs: Koby Altman had a solid trade deadline      Cache   Translate Page

Kudos to Altman for the rebuild. He was thrust into a tough spot last year, having to pick up the pieces from Griffin and balance between possible rebuild and keeping Lebron happy for one last run. He immediately dealt with having to trade Kyrie with few options, so it's hard to blame him for the dismal return. Having to jettison a bad Iman Shumpert contract he inherited (4/$40m) was a big win.

He's played his limited cards as well as could be expected this year...getting the most he could out of what they had to offer. And on that note, kudos to Gilbert for a willingness to spend and take on bad contracts, to turn those into assets (netting the Rockets' first rounder). Not every owner is willing to spend to generate draft picks.

The Weekend Review - February 9th-11th      Cache   Translate Page

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It's a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

If you'd like to participate with The Sunday Salon, it is now a Facebook group.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading is a meme with a new host!  It's now being hosted by Kathryn at Book Date. This is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between! This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from!

I'm also linking to  Stacking The Shelves which is hosted by Team Tynga's Reviews.

Happy Weekend!

Our weather has been pretty nice this week.  A little chilly, but sunny.  They are saying there's a possibility of snow next week.  We'll see.  We've been pretty lucky and haven't had too much snow this season.

This was the first full week at my new job and it's pretty much been taking up all my time.  I'm not getting much reading in and I wasn't able to keep up with the Tuesday and Friday weekly memes.  Hopefully I can get back on track soon.  Fortunately, I had already scheduled posts for some of my upcoming blog tours and I'm going to try and pre-schedule others for this week too.  I will try and make time for commenting as well.

I did manage to get some Kindle freebies.  I don't know when I think I'll have time to read them.  LOL

I am trying to listen to a cozy mystery on audio to and from work, but I get too distracted.  Maybe I need a non-fiction book to listen to.  Anyone have any suggestions?

I hope you all have a great week!  Happy Valentine's Day!

Yvonne

Watch Lucille Ball demo a 1939 ancestor of the "talk box" famously used by Peter Frampton      Cache   Translate Page

In this 1939 newsreel, the great Lucille Ball demonstrates the Sonovox, a device that brings amplified sound effects from vinyl records into the throat where the tongue and lips modulate it. Here's the patent for the Sonovox, invented by Gilbert Wright and used in TV advertisements, the movie Dumbo (1941) for Casey Junior the train's voice, and the "days of the week" radio jingle that was included on The Who Sell Out (1967).

Of course the Sonovox begat the "talk box" that routes an amplified instrument's sound from a small speaker into the musician's mouth via a rubber tube so they can shape the tone as if they're speaking. In the rock arena, Peter Frampton made the talk box famous on the track "Do You Feel Like We Do" (1973).

More on all this in my post last year featuring Pete Drake's beautiful pedal steel "talk box" tune "Forever" from 1963, long before Peter Frampton showed us the way.

For Sale

I have a CPC1100 for sale that is in like new condition. It is 2 years old and I have only used it half a dozen times. I will include everything that originally came with it: 9x50 finder, hand controller, power cord, eyepiece (40mm, I think, I will have to look), anything else I may have forgotten, etc.

In addition I will include:
12v AC adapter
f/6.3 Celestron focal reducer
f/3.3 Meade 4000 CCD focal reducer - not sure if I ever used it.
OPT 99% reflective 2" mirror diagonal
Astro-Zap dew shield
padded canvas carrying case with handles (shown)
Over sized reflective daytime cover (don't have picture because it's in my RV in storage. I'll have to go get that) It's large enough for a 14" SCT so you don't have to remove the finder to put on the cover.

I have the original shipping containers and will ship at buyer's expense but I prefer pick-up. Because of the carrying case and cover there would be a third box to ship.
Prefer cash or PayPal.

Will consider reasonable offers.

Thanks for looking!

New Line Premieres Gilbert and Sullivan's Long-Lost BLOODY KING OEDIPUS      Cache   Translate Page

New Line Theatre, "the bad boy of musical theatre," has announced a free public reading of Gilbert and Sullivan's BLOODY KING OEDIPUS, Monday night, Jan. 6, 2020, at 7:00 pm at the Marcelle Theater, in the Grad Center Arts District.

After shocking the music and theatre worlds by rediscovering Gilbert & Sullivan's lost masterpiece The Zombies of Penzance in 2013, and then staging and publishing the controversial original opera, in 2018, now New Line Theatre artistic director Scott Miller has done it once again. This time, Miller has unearthed Gilbert & Sullivan's even darker and funnier BLOODY KING OEDIPUS, an opera no one even knew existed until now, based on Sophocles' iconic Greek tragedy of murder, incest, disfigurement, and suicide.

The legendary British team of librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan together wrote fourteen comic operas between 1871 and 1896. Or is it sixteen? After rewriting their original Zombies of Penzance at the insistence of producer Richard D'Oyly Carte, the team premiered The Pirates of Penzance in 1879. Until now, scholars believed that their next project was the pastoral satire Patience. We now know that isn't true. After the huge success of HMS Pinafore and Pirates, the team decided to tackle something a bit weightier. According to personal papers found with the manuscript, it was Gilbert who suggested two unlikely possibilities, Dante's Inferno, and the classic Greek tragedy Oedipus the King, set in Thebes, a Greek city-state in the 13th century BC.

They both agreed Inferno would make a less than satisfying comic opera.

Gilbert stayed curiously faithful to the plot and characters of Sophocles' ancient tragedy - until the end of the show, when Gilbert evidently couldn't restrain himself from adding a comic, Gilbertian twist, upending everything that's come before, as usual. It's safe to say Sophocles would not have sanctioned Gilbert's much more comic ending. The score included song titles like "We've Been Very, Very Sick," "I Can See Now I Was Blind," "Now This is Quite Awkward," "So Our King Just Might Have Murdered Our Last King," and "He Hasn't Taken It Too Well."

As he had done with The Zombies of Penzance, Richard D'Oyly Carte refused to produce the gory Bloody King Oedipus, convinced that Gilbert & Sullivan's audience did not want to see the hero of the story gouge both his eyes out after his wife has hanged herself, beautiful music and clever rhymes or not. Gilbert was enraged, but eventually gave in (again) and wrote an entirely new libretto to Sullivan's finished score, now as the gentle satire Patience, leaving nothing of the original text.

In 2018, Miller was contacted by an American college student in London, who had come across the original manuscript of the full score of Bloody King Oedipus, while cataloguing some newly discovered private papers of Richard D'Oyly Carte's cousin Maud. There among the correspondence was a letter written by the outraged producer, though evidently never mailed, to the Archbishop of Canterbury, insisting on the excommunication of Gilbert from the Church of England due to his "second un-Christian opera in a row," Bloody King Oedipus.

The discovery of this second lost Gilbert & Sullivan horror opera now forces a reexamination of the team's entire output, and what we thought we knew about their taste in source material.

And now, at long last, King Oedipus, Queen Jocasta, General Creon, Tiresias the Blind Seer, Milo the Herald, and all of Thebes will make their comic opera debut. Miller has painstakingly reassembled these rediscovered materials into their original form; and St. Louis composer and orchestrator John Gerdes is reconstructing Sullivan's music, after doing the same with The Zombies of Penzance.

New Line Theatre will present a free public reading of the rediscovered show January 6, 2020. The company has not yet announced a full production.

New Line Theatre is a professional company dedicated to involving the people of the St. Louis region in the exploration and creation of daring, provocative, socially and politically relevant works of musical theatre. New Line was created back in 1991 at the vanguard of a new wave of nonprofit musical theatre just starting to take hold across the country. The company has given birth to several world premiere musicals over the years and has brought back to life several shows that were not well served by their original New York productions. Altogether, New Line has produced 86 musicals since 1991, and the company has been given its own entry in the Cambridge Guide to American Theatre and the annual Theater World. New Line receives funding from the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.

New Line's 28th season continues with La Cage aux Folles in March, and the St. Louis premiere of the new rock musical Be More Chill in June.

The Zombies of Penzance script, piano score, and live original cast album are all available on Amazon.com and other online retailers and streaming services.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton / Para Hilaire Belloc      Cache   Translate Page

Dios hizo especialmente las estrellas;
Los bebés las contemplan asombrados
Y las ven enredadas en un árbol;

No te asustes demasiado, amigo mío.

Y la Muerte baile con la Libertad;

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (Londres, 1874-Beaconsfield, Inglaterra, 1936), The Napoleon of Notting Hill, John Lane/The Bodley Head, Londres, 1904. Proyecto Gutenberg
Buenos Aires Poetry, enero 18, 2019

TO HILAIRE BELLOC

For every tiny town or place
God made the stars especially;
Babies look up with owlish face
And see them tangled in a tree;
You saw a moon from Sussex Downs,
A Sussex moon, untravelled still,
I saw a moon that was the town’s,
The largest lamp on Campden Hill.

Yea; Heaven is everywhere at home
The big blue cap that always fits,
And so it is (be calm; they come
To goal at last, my wandering wits),
So is it with the heroic thing;
This shall not end for the world’s end
And though the sullen engines swing,
Be you not much afraid, my friend.

This did not end by Nelson’s urn
Where an immortal England sits–
Nor where your tall young men in turn
Drank death like wine at Austerlitz.
And when the pedants bade us mark
What cold mechanic happenings
Must come; our souls said in the dark,
‘Belike; but there are likelier things.’

Likelier across these flats afar
These sulky levels smooth and free
The drums shall crash a waltz of war
And Death shall dance with Liberty;
Likelier the barricades shall blare
Slaughter below and smoke above,
And death and hate and hell declare
That men have found a thing to love.

Far from your sunny uplands set
I saw the dream; the streets I trod
The lit straight streets shot out and met
The starry streets that point to God.
This legend of an epic hour
A child I dreamed, and dream it still,
Under the great grey water-tower
That strikes the stars on Campden Hill.

Gilbert kickstarts 2019 season at Tour de la Provence      Cache   Translate Page

Philippe Gilbert will start his season at the Tour de la Provence next week, headlining a Deceuninck-QuickStep team that is looking to add to the four victories that they’ve already racked up in 2019.

Gilbert is building towards the Classics where he hopes to revive his ‘strive for five’ challenge of winning all the monuments. This will be the first time that he has ridden the four-day Tour de la Provence, which begins on Thursday, February 14.

Joining Gilbert will be Belgian national champion Yves Lampaert, who is also riding for the first time this season. The remainder of the team is a mixture of youth and experience with Rémi Cavagna, who started his season at the Tour Down Under, Kasper Asgreen and Florian Senechal, alongside Tim Declercq and Pieter Serry.

Deceuninck-QuickStep have already been on the top step of the rostrum this season and they’re eyeing up a number of stages to increase their tally, starting with the opening day prologue.

"After a nice training camp in Algarve, all the riders are sharp and ready to start in La Provence, a well-organised race which schedules on the opening day an ITT that suits several of our riders. Powerhouse Tim Declercq will keep the break under control the following day and hopefully we’ll be in the mix for the stage victory, in case it will come down to a bunch sprint,” said directeur sportif Brian Holm.

"As always, we are motivated and will fight for stage wins and the general classification with our strong rouleurs and puncheurs. The hilly and winding course is very much to our team’s liking, so we are really looking forward to kicking off things in a couple of days."

Texas Historical Markers - El Capote Ranch      Cache   Translate Page
Jose de la Baume was a French Army officer during the American Revolution. After that, he joined the Spanish Army and for his services there was granted this 27,000 acre ranch from Spain in 1806. He became the first owner of the title to this land and he had his title to it affirmed after Mexico won independence from Spain. It was confirmed that he did own the land. The next owner was Michael Erskine, from 1840 to 1870s. This was during the great cattle drives that made the image of the Texas cowboy famous. The third change in land ownership included Theodore Roosevelt's 2nd wife, Edit Kermit Carow, who was deeded a portion of this ranch. The horse, named Seguin, that Col. Roosevelt rode to further fame up San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War was a horse bred and raise on this El Capote Ranch! The land of the ranch went to Judge Leroy Gilbert Denman upon his purchase of it in 1897. As of 1976, Judge Denman's descendants still owned it. This historical marker appears beside a main entrance gate opening onto FM 466, locally named Capote Road. It is opposite the nearby junction of Guadalupe Hills Lane and Capote Road. Raw video shows CNN was tipped off by Mueller before SWAT raid on Roger Stone
Raw video posted to Twitter by a CNN cameraman reveals that Mueller’s FBI colluded with CNN so they could capture the Roger Stone SWAT-style raid last Friday.

Footage posted by freelance cameraman Gilbert De La Rosa shows CNN parked right in front of Stone’s house waiting for the FBI to show up early Friday morning. When the FBI arrive they ignore him as he got out of his vehicle to film, instead of treating him as a potentially armed hostile actor or innocent bystander.
Thegatewaypundit.com reports: That the FBI completely ignored De La Rosa as he got out of his vehicle when they arrived indicates FBI agents were told in advance a CNN cameraman and reporter would be on scene waiting to film the pre-dawn raid and arrest of Stone.
Those instructions would have come from higher ups showing that CNN,  the FBI Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s office colluded to put CNN front and center for the raid.
Watching the video, it is stunning to see De La Rosa roll down his window and then step out of his vehicle as the FBI agents pull up and exit their vehicles in tactical gear with weapons drawn–and not one FBI agent points his weapon at De La Rosa. They don’t even speak to him to check him out. It’s like he’s part of the FBI team.
Here’s how CNN reported their exclusive on the raid early Friday.

CNN producer David Shortell described in a video report how he and De La Rosa were close enough to see Stone answer the door wearing pajamas and eyeglasses and and hear him identify himself to the agents during the pre-dawn raid. Shortell said he and De La Rosa were moved away from Stone’s house shortly after that. During his report for CNN, Shortell is seen standing in daylight across from an intersection to Stone’s street that is blocked by police cars.

So sorry to see you go, ninobepresent, don’t let the door hit you on the way out. My parting advice would be, give up on the book and use your savings to visit Oregon House, California 95945 instead. If you hang around the store, you are almost bound to run into a Man #5 or a Man #6, they are that thick on the ground. Maybe even, if you are lucky, Solartype him or herself! Anyway, someone as advanced as yourself will certainly be able to pick up on the special vibes, and vice versa, so introduce yourself and take it from there. Remember, you will be expected to be able to spout a few words about non–dualism, but a couple of minutes study of the literature will suffice to get you in the door. Just keep to generalities. And I’d practice the thousand–yard stare into the Empyrean Blue, that will impress them no end. Here Asaf Braverman shows exactly what I’m talking about: https://beperiod.com/en/project/setting-aims/ And who knows, maybe you’ll get to realize your ambition to give Conscious Bob a blowjob after all!

Op Ed - Twitter Tweeters Need to Chill Before They Spill      Cache   Translate Page
Deck:
Feelings can fuel a fiery tweet...
Topic:
Main Image:

Body:

Do you have a Twitter account? It is a powerful internet tool with instant access to other humans.

Twitter, created in 2006, is an online social networking service where users post messages known as “tweets.” No chirping, cheeping, peeping birds—only humans.

Twitter is designed to elicit frequent, unprompted, spontaneous, and unfiltered thoughts from its users, who come into conflict with one another as in no other medium, sometimes tweeting things they quickly regret,” according to a 2018 article in The Atlantic.

Feelings can fuel a fiery tweet. Chill before you spill the beans. Flaming words tweeted in the heat of emotions can get you fired or arrested. Are you a hot-headed tweeter? Then be a quitter with your Twitter—before a FBI or CIA agent knocks on your door. Enroll in an anger management class before you crash.

Are you a fellow that is bitter with their Twitter? Revenge tweets can invite word fights. And ping-pong profanity is gasoline to word fights. Tame that brain before you write. Stop that impulse. Knee-jerk reactions can spark fireworks. Boom! The entire Twitter world knows what you just texted. “But I clicked the privacy button!” And people will put a spin on what they think you meant. And our perception is our reality. “But that’s not what I meant!” Too late—the Twitter patrol has blasted you. Don’t litter on your Twitter—trashy words are offensive. And you must abide by the Twitter rules.

Insensitive tweeting can stir up support from human rights activists across the globe. Walk a mile in another person’s tweeting shoes before you judge her/his person-hood.

Controversial opinions can flare tempers. Posting abusive comments can get you sacked and word smacked. Media mobs will demand your resignation.

Nowadays, one must be careful about joking via Twitter—not all senses of humor are alike. Joking about natural disasters where death occurred can have repercussions. Just ask Gilbert Gottfried. He lost the Aflac duck job for tweeting a joke pertaining to the tsunami. And he is a comedian who is paid to be funny and sarcastic. His tweeting goose got cooked by foul fingers.

Hush-hush. Tweeting secrets about the workplace, the boss, and coworkers is not wise. A gossip guru may retweet your responses. Confidential information revealed over the tweeting airwaves is not a prudent decision. And your dirty laundry could go viral. Keep your underpants under your pants.

Some adults squabble like young children on Twitter with accusations and name-calling. “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but tweets will never hurt me.” Wrong. Tweets can devastate. Tweets can cause harm. Tweets can get you ostracized.

And the continuous question: Should President Trump tweet? I say no—what say you? Using Twitter as a political playground is twaddle.

It appears the First Amendment does not apply to Twitter tweets. “Social media has turned into a freelance surveillance state. Let’s give each other a break,” opined Megan McArdle, a Washington Post columnist.

Haven’t we all blurted out something regrettable? Does a sincere apology warrant a shunning? Do Twitterites show no mercy for mistakes, blunders, and faux pas?

Tweeters only get 280 characters to say what they want to say. So no long boring stories allowed. Can typed words travel faster than the speed of light? I don’t know but slow down those thumbs or fingers. Pause, breathe, and think before you tweet. Inhale and exhale prior to pressing “send.” Read it before you tweet it. Read it again before you send.

Nonetheless, Twitter isn’t good or bad—it’s neutral. It’s how humans use it that makes it a wand or a weapon. Twitter is full of people with interesting things to say; sharing ideas, opinions, and reflections. Diverse viewpoints are presented. Twitter is a platform for communicating.

Nonetheless, once you tweet it—it’s etched in stone. So be cautious, cognizant, and careful when tweeting.

One Flown After Rollover Crash near Frackville Overnight      Cache   Translate Page
One person was injured in a rollover crash near Frackville overnight Saturday into Sunday.

Just after 2:00am, emergency personnel were dispatched to the Frackville-Shenandoah Highway (Route 924) between Frackville and Gilberton, near the Rock Fence, for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment.

When crews and police arrived, they found a truck that had overturned with one male trapped inside.

Gilberton's Fire and the West End Fire Company from Mahanoy City responded along with police.

The victim was cut from the vehicle after removing the roof and taken to a waiting helicopter and flown to an area hospital.

Luciano Bivar, presidente do PSL

Ever wanted the inside scoop on crashing that exclusive party, getting better than average dope, and spending the night with someone you'd be ashamed to be seen with the next morning?

Filmmaker Paul Sapiano answers your questions on these and many other critical areas of the party lifestyle in this satiric comedy. Presented in part as a faux-documentary and in part as the story of a typical night in the life of a handful of Los Angeles nightlife mavens.

The Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down offers "useful" advice on getting into the club, scamming free drinks, tipping the bar staff, dealing with uncooperative drug dealers, talking your way into an all-star after party, how to attract women by pretending to be gay, and getting rid of last night's pickup in the cold light of the morning.

The Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down received its world premiere at the 2006 Los Angeles Film Festival.

Stars: Jessica Ross, Kat Turner, Dennis Haskins, Jeff Davis, Benny Ciaramello, Brendan McNamara, C.C. Henry King - The Gunfighter - 1950
(Univers du western)
Had not seen this one starring Gregory Peck as the outlaw Jimmy Ringo. Always a pleasure to see the great Millard Mitchell, here he stars as Marshal Mark Strett, once a dirty son of a bitch and now a marshal. Stunning black and white photography by Arthur C. Miller. Very good film.

Oren Moverman - The Messenger - 2009
(rewatch)
Starring Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson. An important contemporary film worth more than one viewing, I also like Moverman's other film with Woody Harrelson; Rampart.  Also worth a look for fans of Samantha Morton and Steve Buscemi, both give strong performances. Very nice color palette in the film as well, gives a subtle ambiance throughout the film you wouldn't necessarily be able to pinpoint but is strongly present.

1.25.2019
André De Toth - The Indian Fighter - 1955
(Univers du western)
Another fifties western I had not seen. I am a big fan of De Toth, Kirk Douglas  and Walter Matthau but I couldn't get into this one. Maybe worth it to see Hank Worden and Elisha Cook Jr. (as a Edward S. Curtis type photographer).

Christopher Nolan - Memento - 2000
(rewatch)
Recently I watched Soderbergh's The Limey from 1999 and both films have a quality of transition between the 1990s and the 2000s. Each decade (in popular) cinema had a very distinct style, and looking back one sees some films that have this strange uber-90s quality (90s films on drugs), a quality that becomes very common in films from the 2000s decade.  Other works could include Paul Thomas Anderson's Hard Eight and Boogie Nights from the late 90s, Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket from 1996, and Todd Solondz's Happiness from 1998. One could also include Fincher but his Fight Club is really one shite film, written by an author who's popularity truly boggles the mind.  Besides the brief bit of negativity, I wonder what are some other transitional films? On re-watching Memento after almost 10 years, an observation is that the story is basically not interesting and gets in the way. Obviously the films novelty lies in the way it is told, that sounds all good and proper but one wonders if this kind of alternative linear story telling works better in literature? Raymond Queneau's Exercices de style is a great example of a story with basically no interest transforming into a page turner.  Contemporary director's obsession with Kubrickian structure is something that is hard not to criticize, for this viewer at least (Tarantino, Nolan, etcetery). Directors that are definitely important but can one really say their experiments with structure are what make their films worth watching?  Some of the experimental editing in The Limey really stood out as dated and sophomoric, and got in the way of the film. Regardless of this criticism, I did enjoy this film, it is one of those films I have watched over the years starting from around age 23 and here I am approaching middle age. Not unlike the madeleine cookies method of film viewing (cookie pluralized for extra emphasis).

After writing the above text, some more transitional 1990/2000s film came to mind :  The Sixth Sense (1999), L.A. Confidential (1997), The Big Lebowski (1998), and The Truman Show (1998). Very much related to the early 80s films that are like uber 70s films.

1.26.2019
Ingmar Bergman - Wild Strawberries - 1957
(rewatch)
This is the Berman film I have seen the most, not necessarily my favorite but I owned the DVD for a time and would watch it often. The nightmare/dream sequences had much to do with the constant re-watching, also the character and performance of the director Victor Sjöström.  Gunnar Fischer's photography is so very enchanting here, perhaps not as moody and extreme as Sven Nykvist's but equally engaging, more subtle in a way. My friends and I had a musical collective for a while primarily rotating around the mood of Bergman films. Our moniker came out of hearing "ingenting" repeated so often in his films, I caught it once in Wild Strawberries from Ingrid Thulin. Such a lovely word in Swedish.

1.24.2019 - 1.26.2019
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season two

1.27.2019
Michael Cimino - Thunderbolt and Lightfoot - 1974
(rewatch)
Second time seeing this but it has been a long time. Mostly remembered the absurdity of it, a strange sense of humor like with the rabbits in the trunk and "fuck a duck". Humor reminds me more of Clint Eastwood films like Every Which Way but Loose, which this viewer watched over and over as a kid. Such a sad ending, I can understand Jeff Bridges getting an Oscar nomination for this film. Also it is always a pleasure to see Geoffrey Lewis on the big screen.

Nicole Holofcener - The Land of Steady Habits - 2018
Didn't like this film but watched it because I am an enthusiast of Ben Mendelsohn.

1.28.3019
Lewis Gilbert - Alfie - 1966
(rewatch)
Goddamn great film, and also such pleasure to hear the lovely Burt Bacharach song. Michael Caine has some subtle moves, from Harry Brown to Get Carter, his talents go far beyond catching birds.

1.29.2019
Sophie Huber - Harry Dean Stanton Partly Fiction - 2012
Really nice film, and a great portrait of one of the greatest.

Martin Ritt - Hud - 1963

Two films this week with Melvyn Douglas, this and The Tenant.

1.30.2019
Robert Redford - Ordinary People - 1980
(rewatch)
Saw this in middle school and I am sure the story was too complicated for me. Film has a good feel to it but a bit dated. Timothy Hutton didn't really grab me with his acting but visually was perfect for the role.

George Roy Hill - The Sting - 1973
(rewatch)
Solid film.

Roman Polanski - The Tenant - 1976
(rewatch)
Polanski sure makes an homely women. Recently watched Topor in Nosferatu the Vampyre, and it made me want to watch this film. The novel is really something quite strange that I have looked at from time to time. Great film even if not one of his best.

1.31.2019
Jack Hill - Coffy - 1973
No me gusta.

Matthew Saville - Felony - 2014
(rewatch)
Didn't hit me the second time around. First time I enjoyed as I wasn't familiar with Joel Edgerton, but I like him in other films more.

2.1.2019
Steve McQueen - Widows - 2018
Started with a bang but lost momentum, story too complicated. McQueen sure has a great visual style that makes it worth watching. Shame, Hunger and 12 Years a Slave some of the best contemporary films that leave most in the dust.

Damien Chazelle - First Man - 2018
I couldn't get too far into this film, sorry for the bad joke but it didn't have The Right Stuff. Didn't like La La Land either but a tad better than this one. Whiplash isn't bad but the music being some disneyesque contemporary jazz makes it hard to take seriously despite the fine qualities.

Richard Donner - Lethal Weapon - 1987
(rewatch)
Richard Donner - Lethal Weapon 2 - 1989
(rewatch)
Hadn't seen these since I was in middle school/high school. Glover is real good in them, Gibson hard to deal with. Richard Donner made some good films, the best being Inside Moves with John Savage and David Morse. Superman and The Omen also very good. I prefer 48 Hours, but it was worth it to see Arjen Rudd's "diplomatic immunity" at the end of the 2nd film, which has stayed in my mind since I first saw it.

2.4.2019
John G. Avildsen - Save the Tiger - 1973
(rewatch)
This is one of those great underrated 70s films, not perfect but the problems only add to the quality.  Has some really uncomfortable moments which are a strong part of the 70s experience, and also a strange LA film, with a different kind of Angel experience (similar to the New York in The French Connection). Avildsen's next big film was Rocky.

Samuel Fuller - Forty Guns - 1957
(Univers du western, rewatch)
A classic one, always loved the high contrast photography by Joseph F. Biroc.

2.5.2019
Nicholas Ray - Johnny Guitar - 1954
(Univers du western, rewatch)
A few times seeing this film, this current time I found the Emma Small character to just be a bit too much, perhaps the psychological motivations behind her actions not subtle enough to stand up to multiple viewings, a great film regardless. Any excuse to see Sterling Hayden play guitar and shoot a fire arm at a punk-ass kid.

Peter Collinson - The Italian Job - 1969
(rewatch)
Noël Coward, Benny Hill and Michael Caine. Good stuff.

2.6.2019
George Stevens - A Place in the Sun - 1951
(rewatch)
Montgomery Clift is up there in the top 10 greatest pursuers of actorshippe. This film drags a tad and is at many times almost too intense to watch but worth it for his and Elizabeth Taylor's performances.

Anton Corbijn - A Most Wanted Man - 2014
(rewatch)
John le Carré, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Vicky Krie, Rachel McAdams, and Willem Dafoe. The German accents though, not sure if they work? Nice ambiance in this film.

2.7.2019
Hal Needham - Smokey and the Bandit - 1977
(rewatch)
Very colorful language from Jackie Gleason, yet he won't abide cussing in his presence. Film moves in a way that is rare these days. Really surprised the shit out of me seeing Hank Worden for half a second (image above).

Ron Shelton - Bull Durham - 1988
Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins. Good names for the two male leads; Nuke and Crash.

2.8.2019
Rob Cohen - Daylight - 1996
No me gusta

Francis Ford Coppola - The Conversation - 1974
(rewatch)
It hadn't dawned on me previously that Caul's own phone at the end is the devise used to bug his apartment and the destruction of that fine SF apartment was mostly a waste... also hadn't noticed previously all the beautiful layers of gaudy wallpaper exposed by his violence, not unlike the French art where layers of street posters intermingle. I am use to seeing this film on a television screen, but projected (as was done last night) many details emerge. Besides Gene Hackman, this film has three really overwhelmingly strong performances; Allen Garfield, Michael Higgins, and of course John Cazale. A misconception would be that these three guys spent a lot of money on hair grease. Allen Garfield's crease paved the way for many actors seeking a left handed approach to acting. Purchased the fine soundtrack and spent a few evenings listening which suggested watching this classic 70s film. In 2007 this blog featured a list of must see films from the 1970s found here.

Walter Hill - 48 Hrs - 1982
(rewatch)
Walter Hill did some fine films, mostly this one, The Warriors, The Driver, and writing for Aliens, The Getaway, and The MacKintosh Man. Have seen this a few times the last 2-3 years, it is just one hell of a good film with the cowboy bar scene being one of the funniest from the decade. Includes some actors from The Warriors - James Remar and David Patrick Kelly. Kelly is a favorite actor of mine, his performances in Twin PeaksThe Longest Yard and The Funeral are memorable. Pretty funny that he was cast as the therapist in Louie, as he is always the craziest sob in the room!

2.9.2019
Wachowski - The Matrix - 1999
(rewatch)
Rewatched this trying to remember why I have hated the film so much over the years. Thought it was dated as hell when it came out, a bit like an avocado starting to go brown. Putting it together now; the third tier poser goth aesthetics just didn't feel right back in old '99. The editing and stylistic elements of the film are just tasteless and heavy-handed. An example is a quick movement happens in the frame after a quick edit, and the filmmakers adds in a movement sound just in case some viewer out there didn't get it. The lie of the "hacker" as some kind of well meaning anarchist is a load of horse pucky, the reality is they are melonfamers out there trying to rip off the poor and the elderly. There must be other people out there that equally despise these directors?

Chad Stahelski, David Leitch - John Wick - 2014
(rewatch)
Definitely a more enjoyable Keanu Reeves experience. Starts out with a great idea and remains heavy the entire film with a great cast. Was sad to read that Michael Nyqvist, who plays Viggo Tarasov, had passed away. His sympathetic heavy role is kind of unique and he plays it brilliantly. Great actor.

Oh Vinnie, you’ll never get the ‘conscience’ thing, will you? Explaining conscience to someone who doesn’t have one is like trying to explain ‘violet’ to a blind person. So be it, just a fact of life. Apparently, Nino and you and Solartype and Burton can use and abuse and discard just as they like, without many observable consequences. But I get it, it must be very, very satisfying to observe fools like me trying to ameliorate the damage you leave in your wake in our own (very limited) way, and warn others of the dangers that sociopaths pose. What idiots!

Vendetta 1. a private feud, as formerly in Corsica and Italy, in which the family of a murdered person seeks vengeance by killing the slayer or one of the slayer's relatives. 2. any prolonged and bitter feud, rivalry, contention, or the like. Lark, I think you are wrong when you suggest there is a vendetta going on. I have never met Asaf, he arrived after my time. I can only go by his own words and actions, and only those available to the public and some videos and such circulated amongst the Fellowship of Friends laity while he was Burton’s right–hand man. I doubt he has heard of me, and even then, it would only be in passing. Ergo, there can be no rivalry or feud. However, he is a current and active spiritual offspring of Burton and the Fellowship of Friends, and he and his organization follow in the steps of many such others, such as the Spiral of Friends, and they have all ended in grief, even prison terms. And lots of disappointed and even bankrupt or suicidal followers. Think about it, Burton started off with a small group, just like Alex Horn, Asaf Braverman, James Randazzo or the Kuziaks (who split off from Randazzo in turn and formed the New American Wing). I happen to think that groups like this are started by folks who have inherent weaknesses, as well as, of course, strengths and charisma. But the weaknesses, as far as my researches can determine, inevitably overcome the strengths. (And hey, I would be glad if you would point out instances to the contrary.) The primary weaknesses were blindness to their own faults, and thinking that they were suitable to become teachers. In the case of Burton, he was also a narcissist, suffered from satyriasis, and a terminal case of materialism, as he has demonstrated over his entire career. So, I think it very fair to point out that Asaf Braverman has spent most of his adult life learning all these behaviors. It is also evident to me that Asaf is very vain, and it is evident—to me—that his weaknesses were encouraged in the Fellowship. The biggest encouragement, of course, was being picked out by Burton as being someone very special with a golden destiny. So, he was corrupted, supported corruption for decades, and in my opinion, is unlikely (!) to have somehow miraculously reformed himself since he left. This is not to mention his sexual relationship with Burton and the damage that caused him personally and as part of the ongoing normalization of such relationships, his arranged marriages (including to his present wife), the co–invention of the Sequence and foisting of that on the laity, and so on. I have gone into this in much more detail in previous posts, so that should suffice for now, I hope. The other question you asked is that when Asaf charges, as you say, $$$$$, why is he in any way different from all those other ‘gurus’? To me, this illustrates the revolting normalization of the whole phenomenon. Now, seekers and ‘gurus’ alike expect there will be big financial payment. But it wasn’t always this way, and to my mind, the exchange of money that is beyond covering reasonable expenses is deeply corrupting in of itself. But, it is part of the western culture of monetizing ‘everything’, so no, it is not surprising that Asaf wants to live off his ‘students’, it’s the norm. Lark, I’ve answered your questions as best I can, so I think it is fair to expect answers to my questions of you. Why are you so defensive of Asaf Braverman? But, more importantly, how do you think he could have possibly escaped being corrupted by his experiences in the Fellowship, by copying the one–way hierarchical transmission of ‘knowledge’ Burton taught him, which can only lead to uncritical adoration from his followers and to unwarranted unloading of responsibilities onto him that he is ill–equipped to handle? And by the money he is earning? In other words, having learned ‘how to run a cult’ from Burton for twenty years, how can he NOT follow in Burton's footsteps on the road to ruin, and take others with him? ______________________________ WYLTK, thanks for the research, and for the correction, 95962 it is! What’s in a name? Nino said he is from ‘the Balkans’ and certainly Cryllic is used in Serbia, and even in the Latin–based alphabets in the rest of the Balkans, there are several extra characters we in the U.S. would not recognize. So, plenty of room for error.

Virginia Is For Lovers, Part II      Cache   Translate Page

Part I can be found here and I don't want to repeat anything. Instead, I want to start with a few Sunday thoughts from Rev. William Barber's Washington Post OpEd:
If Northam, or any politician who has worn blackface, used the n-word or voted for the agenda of white supremacy, wants to repent, the first question they must ask is “How are the people who have been harmed by my actions asking to change the policies and practices of our society?” In political life, this means committing to expand voting rights, stand with immigrant neighbors, and provide health care and living wages for all people. In Virginia, it means stopping the environmental racism of the pipeline and natural gas compressor station Dominion Energy intends to build in Union Hill, a neighborhood founded by emancipated slaves and other free African Americans.

Scapegoating politicians who are caught in the act of interpersonal racism will not address the fundamental issue of systemic racism. We have to talk about policy. But we also have to talk about trust and power. If white people in political leadership are truly repentant, they will listen to black and other marginalized people in our society. They will confess that they have sinned and demonstrate their willingness to listen and learn by following and supporting the leadership of others. To confess past mistakes while continuing to insist that you are still best suited to lead because of your experience is itself a subtle form of white supremacy.

At the same time, we cannot allow political enemies of Virginia’s governor to call for his resignation over a photo when they continue themselves to vote for the policies of white supremacy. If anyone wants to call for the governor’s resignation, they should also call for the resignation of anyone who has supported racist voter suppression or policies that have a disparate impact on communities of color.

While we must name and resist white supremacy, we can also recall that we are never alone in this work. During the 19th century, there were anti-racist abolitionists-- black and white-- who worked to subvert and transform a system that considered some people chattel. In the new dawn of Reconstruction, black and white men worked together in statehouses across the South to reimagine democracy. During the 20th century’s movements for labor unions, women’s suffrage, and civil, human and environmental rights, fusion coalitions of black, white, brown, Native and Asian worked together to pursue a more perfect union that both acknowledges our original sin and holds on to the hope that we might yet live up to the better angels of our nature. Whenever we ask what repentance means, we don’t have to start from scratch. We have a long tradition to draw on, full of examples of what true repentance must look like.

In his 20s and 30s, Democrat Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia was a recruiter for the Ku Klux Klan, serving as the exalted cyclops of his local chapter. He continued to support the Klan into the 1940s, but Byrd later said joining the Klan was his greatest mistake. He demonstrated what repentance can look like by working with colleagues in Congress to extend the Voting Rights Act in 2006 and backing Barack Obama as his party’s candidate for president in 2008. “Senator Byrd and I stood together on many issues,” wrote Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), who nearly died fighting for voting rights in Selma, Alabama In our present moral crisis, we must remember that real repentance is possible-- and it looks like working together to build the multiethnic democracy we’ve never yet been.
Virginia has been looking bluer and bluer. The state went for Nixon twice and then voted for Gerald Fiord, Reagan twice, George H.W. Bush twice, Dole, George W. Bush twice... Hopeless? In 2008, Obama beat McCain 52.6 to 46.3 and then went on to beat Romney. Even Hillary won the state (albeit with a plurality). 4 of the last 5 governors of the state were conservative Democrats (Mark Warner, Tim Kaine, Terry McAuliffe and Ralph Northam). And since John Warner retired in 2008, Virginia has had 2 Democratic senators. Despite severe gerrymandering, the state's delegation to Congress has went from 8 Republicans and 3 Democrats in the 113th and 114th Congresses to 4 Republicans and 7 Democrats in the 116th. The Republicans hoped the change the dynamic by starting a coordinated series of scandals beginning with Gov. Ralph Northam's yearbook picture in blackface.

Now, as Politico pointed out yesterday, Republican strategists and activists are abuzz about their chances this November, when the party’s slim control of both state legislative chambers are in jeopardy in Virginia’s off-year elections. Republicans have a two-seat majority in the Senate, which has flipped back and forth between the parties four times during the past decade. Four Republican seats had been considered vulnerable this fall, compared to just two Democratic seats. In the House, Democrats made massive gains in 2017 and nearly took control. They were favored to make more gains in the House, where Republicans hold a three-seat majority with one vacancy."
“The entire executive branch of Virginia is apprised of Democrats and all of them are embroiled in their own respective scandals at this point so yes, that has obviously done damage to them,” Republican House Majority Leader Todd Gilbert said. Still, he added, “The damage this has done to Virginia is a much larger issue than these secondary political implications.”

Even if they hang on, the three top leaders won’t be of much help to down-ballot Democrats. Normally they would be among the most powerful Democratic surrogates to appear at campaign rallies or raise money.

After this week, Republicans said they expect to recruit more formidable candidates, while Democrats wonder who they’ll have to run for statewide races in in 2021, the next time the seats are up. Fairfax and Herring had both been expected to run for governor.

"Candidate recruitment for the GOP is being made a lot easier thanks to the events of the last two weeks,” said John March, a spokesman for the Republican Party of Virginia, referring to the scandals and Northam’s controversial comments about late-term abortions.

Some Democrats dispute the consequences, saying the focus will quickly turn back to Trump and national politics.

“Six months from now, everything is going to be in the rearview mirror and the focus on D.C.,” state Sen. Scott Surovell said.

Other Democrats lamented they had only hurt themselves by acting so quickly on Northam, who said he was in his yearbook photo then reversed course, but did admit to donning blackface on another occasion.
Bleak? Yes. But deadly? Perhaps not. First of all, the sanctimonious Republicans have their own problem. Their Senate majority leader, Tommy Norment-- who already has a very strong general election opponent in progressive Democrat Herb Jones, has been exposed as an arch hypocrite. Norment, who was screaming for Notham's head, turns out to be the former managing editor of a college yearbook that contains ugly racial and ethnic slurs and, of course, images of people in blackface. And the news got worse for Virginia Republicans. "Students in a college course Norment taught at the William & Mary say that he routinely made racially insensitive and transphobic comments, forced students of color to defend Confederate iconography, and even defended the university’s defunct Brafferton Indian School that educated Native American kids-- often without their family’s consent-- in the 1700s."

Last week Dahleen Glanton, an African-American reporter for the Chicago Tribune wrote two OpEds on the Virginia scandals, If Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam resigns over racist photo, who wins? on Monday and As of today, let’s forgive everyone who has ever appeared in blackface. But anyone who does it tomorrow will get no mercy. on Friday. First, she identified the problem as political, "little to do with African-Americans... If there ever was a case that pointed out both parties’ shallow interest in pushing forward an agenda addressing racial equality, it is this made-up angst over a picture that appeared 35 years ago in a medical school yearbook in Virginia. Virginia, of all places. Everyone knows the racist history of that state. It is where much of the Civil War was fought. Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy, for Christ’s sake... Is it really so shocking that someone who grew up on a farm in a county with such strong ties to slavery might have put black shoe polish on his face at one time or another?"
Northam says he didn’t realize the harm he’d done by dancing in blackface until he had a conversation about it later with a person of color.

“He let me know why this was offensive,” Northam said at a news conference Saturday. “I apologized to him, and I will never do it again.”

This is what a conversation on race looks like. Someone does something racially insensitive. He discusses it with someone he has hurt and he comes away understanding why this seemingly innocent act is so painful to others.

These are the kinds of interpersonal discussions that can move our nation forward, not the angry, hate-filled rhetoric Trump has encouraged Americans to spew onto each other.

I will not pretend to speak for every African-American, but for many of us, there is simply no outrage over that blackface photograph on Northam’s yearbook page. Of course, it’s racist and offensive. But many of us who live in blackface every day aren’t shocked to learn that a white politician has racist skeletons in his closet. What many African-Americans care about is what Northam has done for them lately.

Apparently, black people in Virginia thought he would be their best ally when 87 percent of them turned out to vote him into office in 2017.

He agreed with them that Confederate monuments have no right in public spaces. Since taking office, he has worked to expand Medicaid to serve the poor. He has helped restore voting rights to felons, politically empowering more black men.

The African-Americans in Virginia have a right to feel betrayed by a friend. But the question they and black people across the country should be asking themselves is: What purpose would Northam’s resignation serve?

As our country engages in a bitter dispute over race, African-Americans have to figure out what we want the end game to be. If it is to enlighten white people about issues of race and help them to understand what it is like to walk in our shoes, then we must allow second chances.

While each case is different, we must consider whether to hold someone hostage as a racist for life because of a mistake made before they became aware. We must decide if it is in our best interest to have someone who has worked to make amends over the years standing with us against those who refuse to accept change... [O]n the larger, more important, issue of racial reconciliation, Northam’s resignation would achieve nothing.

Republicans, on the other hand, would get to rejoice that a racist was unveiled in the Democratic Party. They could point to Northam whenever someone brings up Rep. Steve King’s defense of white nationalists or Florida’s former secretary of state, Michael Ertel, who was forced to resign last month after a picture of him in blackface as a Hurricane Katrina survivor surfaced.

For Democrats, the reward is more calculating. By declaring zero tolerance for a racist act that occurred three decades ago, they’d get to throw African-Americans a small token of appreciation for years of loyalty. That will come in handy when they’re out on the campaign trail in Virginia fighting to keep this important swing state blue.

Trump, though, would get the greatest reward of all. A president known for stoking racial fear and ignoring the truth gets to call a Democrat a liar on Twitter.

After a game of golf with Tiger Woods on Saturday, Trump tweeted that Northam’s denial of being in the blackface photo after first apologizing for it is “unforgivable.”

What’s unforgivable, Mr. President, is how people like you use racism as a political pawn.
The second column she wrote that "racism is bipartisan. It’s not Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative. It has permeated red states as well as blue states. It has always been part of this country’s moral fabric. It is rooted as deeply in America’s political history as the Founding Fathers, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Racism is part of the foundation on which our country was built. Blackface is a symbol of that racism, whether intended or not. It is merely a symptom of the larger, more complicated issue. Focusing on blackface alone is like pulling one rotten tooth when the whole mouth is decayed. Why would African-Americans still struggling to overcome the devastation of slavery, Jim Crow laws and systemic social and economic injustices spend a minute worrying that a politician, trusted or not, once wore blackface?... The way I see it, there is only one way out of this mess. As of today, black people have to forgive every white person who has ever worn blackface. But if anyone does it tomorrow, we’re coming after you."

Yesterday, in an interview with the Washington Post yesterday, Northam said he will spend the rest of his time in office-- 3 years-- remedying ongoing inequities related to race in his state. "It’s obvious from what happened this week that we still have a lot of work to do. There are still some very deep wounds in Virginia, and especially in the area of equity... There are ongoing inequities to access to things like education, health care, mortgages, capital, entrepreneurship. And so this has been a real, I think, an awakening for Virginia. It has really raised the level of awareness for racial issues in Virginia. And so we’re ready to learn from our mistakes." When will Trump look inward and decide to learn from his mistakes?  Yeah, I know. But what about state Senator Norment?

Orlando Apollos rout Atlanta in AAF debut, 40-6      Cache   Translate Page

It couldn’t have been a better debut for the Orlando Apollos on Saturday.

Quarterback Garrett Gilbert went 15 of 25 passing for 227 yards and three total touchdowns (2 passing, 1 receiving) to help lead the Apollos to a dominant 40-6 win over the Atlanta Legends at Spectrum Stadium on the first night of the Alliance of American Football league.

Gilbert’s 26-yard touchdown pass in the first minute of the second quarter to Jalin Marshall not only put Orlando up, 7-3, but it was the first touchdown in AAF history.

Orlando built a 22-6 lead at halftime and never looked back to win its season opener.

Next up for the Apollos is a game at San Antonio next Sunday.

Senators who won’t be in the 9th assembly      Cache   Translate Page

Following the final list of candidates that will contest the February 16 national assembly elections across the country, the fate of some prominent senators are now sealed as they will definitely not be returning to the upper chamber at the expiration of the 8th assembly next June.

AS the date for the February 2019 presidential and national assembly elections draw closer, it is now clear that some prominent members of the red chamber of the national assembly will not be returning back to the senate after the expiration of the current assembly in June. The final confirmation of the end of their stay in the upper chamber came when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released what it call the final list of national assembly candidates for the 2019 general elections.

While a little more than 60 senators who made INEC’s list of national assembly contenders have chances of being part of the 9th assembly as they will now slug it out with their opponents on February 16, more than 40 of their colleagues have no hope of ever being part of the next senate as their names are not on the list of those that will be participating in the nationwide elections that will produce members of the 9th assembly.

The affected senators will not be contesting the 2019 elections for various reasons. While a number of them voluntarily decided to ‘retire’ from the senate and allow others take their place, there are those who opted to seek the governorship tickets of their various parties in their various states. While some succeeded and are now guber candidates, others failed in their bid and will not be competing in the elections altogether.

There are also some of the senators who lost their seats to the senatorial ambitions of their state governors. As a result of the loss of senators in this categories, seven serving governors now have the possibilities of joining others as senators when the next assembly is inaugurated. Among serving governors now seeking senate seats are Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun state and Rochas Okorocha of Imo state.

Others include Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state, Kashim Shettima of Bornu state, Ibrahim Dankwabo of Gombe, Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara state and Ibrahim Geidam of Yobe state. While a few of these governors emerged as the candidates of their respective parties through peaceful consensus arrangements that saw the incumbents stepping down for them, others had to wage fierce political wars against erstwhile political associates to pick the tickets.

The ‘retirees’

Among current senators who decided they have had enough of the national assembly is former senate President and the indisputable longest serving senator in the country today, Senator David Mark. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator represents Benue South senatorial district of Benue state in the national assembly. He is currently serving his fifth term as a senator having been first elected in 1999.

Mark, who was elected Senate President in  and remained in that position till 2015 when his party, the PDP could not win enough seat in the upper chamber to be in the majority and had to cede the seat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Although he remained a respected member of the chamber, not much was heard of his since the inception of the 8th assembly. Comrade Abba Moro, a former Interior Minister, is the candidate of the PDP in the district for the next election.

Similarly, Senator Jonah Jang (PDP Plateau North), who is also a former governor of Plateau state, has willingly decided that he will not be returning to the senate after just a term in the chamber. The PDP senator, according to sources close to him, considered running for the presidential ticket of his party but later jettison the idea. He may have decided to retire from gunning for elective positions even.

Senators Shaaba Lafiagi (PDP Kwara North) and Demola Adeleke (PDP Osun West), are two other legislators who didn’t bother to seek the ticket of their party for re-election into the national assembly. While it was gathered that Lafiagi, a former governor of Kwara state decided to rest on account of old age, Adeleke may have been forced to jettison a return to the senate by an ongoing trial bothering on alleged examination malpractices.

There are also Senators Ahmed Sani (APC Zamfara East), Bukar Abba Ibrahim (APC Yobe East) and Kaka Gabbai (APC Borno Central), who voluntarily opted out of the race to allow their state governors take their seat at the senate in the 9th assembly. While Governor Abdulazeez Yari is still battling in the courts to get his name into the INEC list, Governors Geidam and Shettima are now slated by INEC to battle other candidates for senate seats.

Guber hopefuls

Featuring prominently among senators that will not be returning to the national assembly as members of the 9th senate are those who decided to gun for the governorship seats in their various states. Following the various primary elections of political parties across the country, while some of them are now flying the banners of their parties as guber candidates, others let out in the race.

Senators Jeremiah Useni (PDP Plateau South ) and Abdulaziz Murtala Nyako (ADC Adamawa Central) are two senators who made it into INEC’s list of governorship candidates. As such, the duo will not be returning to the national assembly in 2019. While Useni is now the gubernatorial candidate of the opposition PDP in Plateau state, Nyako, son of a former governor, is flying the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the Adamawa state governorship race.

Similarly, Senators Usman Bayero Nafada (PDP Gombe North) and Hope Uzodinma (APC Imo West) were successful in their quest for the governorship tickets of the PDP and APC respectively in their homes states of Gombe and Imo. The duo will not be rerunning to the senate for now. While Nafada emerged as the choice of Governor Dankwambo in Gombe, Uzodinma waged, and is still waging the political battle of his life with Governor Okorocha to clinch the guber ticket.

Senator John Enoh (APC Cross River Central) is another member of the national assembly that will not return for the 9th senate. He sought the governorship ticket oft eh APC in his home state of Cross Rivers and made it to the final list of INEC although his candidature is strongly being challenged by another chieftain of the party in the state. Safe for an unfavorable court judgement, Enoh currently looks good to contest the guber polls.

Defeated

Not all the senators willingly surrendered their tickets to the contenders who replaced them. Many of them put up fierce resistance even when it was obvious that they forces against their reelection into the senate were formidable. But in spite of their struggle to wade off opposition to their candidacies, a good number of the senators lost at the various primary elections of their parties.

Good examples are Senators Gbenga Ashafa (APC Lagos East), Lanre Tejuoso (APC Ogun Central), Fatima Raji Rasaki (APC Ekiti Central), Sola Adeyeye (APC Osun Central) and Babajide Omoworare (APC Osun East). Ashafa was trounced by Hon. Bayo Osinowo, a ranking member of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA) while Rasaki lost the APC ticket to former House of Reps member, Opeyemi Bamidele.

In Osuns state, both Senators Adeyeye, current chief whip of the senate, and Omoworare, could not convince their constituents to allow them return to the senate for another term. Rather, members of the APC in Osun central and Osun East rejected their re-election bids and instead gave the party’s tickets to  Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Osun State, Dr. Ajibola Basiru and Ajibola Famurewa, director-general of the campaign of Governor Gboyega Oyetola.

Senators Aliyu Sabi (Niger North) and David Umaru (Niger East) will also not be returning to the senate largely because Governor Sani Bello fought vehemently against their re-election. While the duo gave good account of them in the struggle for the tickets of the ruling APC in the state during the primary elections, the political structure of the governor across the state ensured they both lost at the primaries.

Others national assembly members who couldn’t suppress oppositions to their re-election during the primary elections and had to surrender their party’s tickets to other people include Senators Gilbert Nnaji (PDP Enugu East), Emmanuel Paulker (PDP Bayelsa Central), Ben Murray Bruce (PDP Bayelsa West), Fosta Ogola (PDP Bayelsa South) and Ahmed Abubakar (APC Adamawa South).

Locked out

In a bizarre twist in the race towards the 9th senate, some senators have been locked out of the struggle by INEC due to certain technicalities. And unless something unforeseen happens, all the senators representing Zanfara and Rivers states in the national assembly may remain automatically disqualified from returning to the upper chamber after the general elections.

In the final list released by the commission, no candidates were listed for the APC in Rivers and Zamfara states. Earlier, INEC had said it would not allow the APC field candidates in Zamfara because the party did not hold primaries within the stipulated time. Infighting and disagreements among leaders of the party in the state led to the inability to hold the primaries within the stipulated time.

Two separate courts in Abuja and Zamfara recently gave conflicting judgements on INEC’s insistence that the party cannot field candidates in the state. While the court in Abuja said the commission acted right, another one in Gusau ruled that the APC did conduct primaries and INEC should ensure the party presents candidates for the general elections. The electoral commission, after all said and done, chose to abide by the judgement of the Abuja court.

In Rivers, the same scenario played out among party leaders, leading to the inability of the party to conduct acceptable primary elections to all the factions and the INEC. The party is divided into two factions loyal to the transport minister, Rotimi Amaechi, and Senator Magnus Abe respectively. The commission say based on an high court ruling, it will not recognize any of the two factions.

Rather than resolve the differences and hold primary elections joint within stipulated time, the infighting continued. What followed is a litany of court cases. Recently, a federal high court recently ruled that the APC disobeyed a high court order on its congresses and so the primaries that produced its candidates were null and void. Thus, the three senators in the state will not be returning to the chamber if the situation remains the same till February 16.
