With R233,000 you can say “Goodbye Eskom” Going off-grid solar system      Cache   Translate Page

Eskom load shedding is here to stay, if you are homeowner this is the time to start considering investing in solar energy, even if going off-grid.

An off-grid solar system isn't connected to the electricity grid and needs battery storage. Off-grid solar systems should be appropriately designed to get enough power throughout the year and have the required battery capability to satisfy the installed locations electricity needs or demand.

More South African homeowners are electing to move to solar panels thanks to increasing affordability and therefore the big selection of advantages they offer.

Where to start?

“Installing a solar system isn't simply a matter of sewing up a couple of panels and adding a few batteries, there's no normal system, every system must be properly sized to suit the necessities of every home,” Hutchinson same.

“Make positive the company you're managing is a longtime company with an honest reputation and may offer the proper advice and service back up.”

Hutchinson added that it's vital to prioritise, reducing your most massive masses first, as this may deliver the best savings:

  • Start by replacing the home’s light bulbs with energy economical lighting.
  • Replace your home’s geyser with a setup, or solar geyser. An extremely insulated hot water storage system can even cut the homes electricity prices by an estimated 50%.
  • A solar photovoltaic (PV) system will offer up to 30% of an average home’s energy. It's vastly helpful in the long-run and should be viewed as an investment. However, before embarking on this, it's vital to grasp whether or not the home’s upper side has been designed to accommodate the best number of panels.
  • Lastly, homeowners will select a complete integrated system. A hybrid inverter and battery, like Energy Partners’ own ICON Home Energy Hub, allows property house owners to integrate power from their solar PV panels, the national grid and batteries. It additionally incorporates a mobile app to track energy usage and savings in real time.

Solar system for a large house

The solar system which provides power to most appliances in a large home – excluding a heater and geyser – will cost around R233,000.

This system includes 24 solar panels, inverters, a battery bank, cabling, and installation costs.

The following infographic provides an overview.

As Statista's Martin Armstrong points out in the chart above, a fair share of these countries do still require a visa on arrival, meaning that purely in terms of simply walking through passport control, Singapore passport holders have the easiest time in the most countries.

TopRank Marketing’s Top 10 B2B Content Marketing Trends & Predictions for 2019      Cache   Translate Page

It’s that time of year, B2B marketers. As the holiday seasons kicks into high gear and the countdown to a new year accelerates, we all find ourselves looking into our figurative crystal balls to gauge what the new year will bring, and how we’ll improve ourselves and our content marketing strategies, capitalize on opportunities, and adapt or side-step new challenges as they come.

2018 was a big year for content marketers—from the implementation of new data privacy and security regulations like GDPR to the rise of promising new tools and technologies to enhance personalization, measurement, and data analyzation. And from our perspective, 2019 is on track to bring even bigger changes, presenting both opportunities and challenges for B2B marketers.

So, what does the future hold for content marketing in the B2B space? Here are our top 10 B2B content marketing predictions and trends marketers should know now and keep an eye on into the new year.

#1 - The Trust Factor

From security scandals and privacy concerns to consumers’ dwindling confidence in the world’s core institutions, trust is in crisis. In fact, the last two Edelman Trust Barometer surveys have revealed declining consumer trust toward business, media, and government, and NGOs to “do what is right.” This was the first time a decline was reported since the inception of the report nearly two decades ago.

Couple general distrust with historical skepticism of marketing and advertising messages, and it will be even more imperative for B2B marketers to focus on building trust and credibility with buyers and prospects.

This means doubling down on marketing with authenticity to create more meaningful audience connections will be critical going forward.

“Fostering a truly authentic reputation in this faceless digital world, while combating the instinctive consumer tendency to distrust corporate messaging, presents a very real challenge,” Nick Nelson, TopRank Marketing Content Strategist, said not too long ago. “Those brands that are ready to meet it with gusto will become champions of the new era.”

[bctt tweet="Brands that are ready to meet authenticity with gusto will become champions of the new era. - @NickNelsonMN #ContentMarketingTrends #ContentMarketing" username="toprank"]

This also means striving to be the best answer for your audience, delivering quality, relevant content that informs, educates, and inspires. This means leveraging the right data, at the right time, for the right purpose to show audiences they can trust your brand.

“Great content answers questions and solves problems for your customers,” Amanda Todorovich, Senior Director of Content & Creative Services, Cleveland Clinic, told us. “When you do that—no matter what platform or format—it works and generates engagement every time.”

Finally, this also means taking the initiative to align yourself with credible, relevant voices (e.g. influencers) and collaborate on creating incredible, insightful, trustworthy content. (We’ll get into more detail on that later.)

Now for the curve ball.

In 2019 and beyond, building trust cannot be limited to your prospects and customers. Building trust also has to happen within the organization—especially at the C-suite level.

A study from Fournaise Group found that 73% of CEOs say marketers lack business credibility and the ability to generate sufficient growth. Furthermore, 80% of CEOs simply don’t trust marketers at all, yet a whopping 91% do trust CIOs and CFOs.

“Marketing done well with a clear why, measurement and purpose creates the kind of value that both customers and business leaders will trust, ensuring credibility and investment far into the future,” our CEO Lee Odden wrote earlier this year.

#2 - Goodbye “Consumable” Content; Hello Personalized Experiences

In 2018, talk of “content personalization” and “creating content experiences” has been growing louder. And in 2019, it’ll likely hit a fever pitch.

Econsultancy and Adobe’s 2018 Digital Trends report revealed that delivering personalized experiences in real-time is the most exciting opportunity for digital and marketing professionals. Furthermore, optimizing customer experiences across multiple touchpoints is a top priority over the next few years.

This means that in 2019 and beyond, B2B marketers have to stop thinking about how audiences “consume” content, and start thinking about how audiences want to experience content and how they can deliver.

More than likely, to deliver tailored experience you’ll need to embrace proven and emerging marketing technologies such as those driven by AI and machine learning that can help enable personalization and enhance experiences.

In addition, this will require you to align different stakeholders/departments across the organization.

“First and foremost, personalization is a group effort which cuts across all functions of the content supply chain: strategy, planning, creation, assembly, and delivery,” Peter Krmpotic, Group Product Manager at Adobe, told us in an interview. “Establishing and aligning these functions with each other is the first block in a strong foundation.”

[bctt tweet="Personalization is a group effort which cuts across all functions of the content supply chain: strategy, planning, creation, assembly, and delivery. @PeterKrmpotic #ContentMarketing" username="toprank"]

Finally, it’s seems as if “disposable” content fits in here, too. Instagram Stories. Facebook Stories. Snapchat Stories. These tactics are part of the experience you can create, offering an in-the-moment conversation or touchpoint with your audience.

“When it comes to social media content, B2B marketers need to go beyond links to their blog posts,” Joshua Nite, Senior Content Marketing Manager at TopRank Marketing, shared. “Think about Stories on Facebook, Instagram & Snapchat, for example. It's about an ongoing conversation with your audience."

#3 - The Breakdown of Data Silos

Every marketer has data--some may even say they need or want more of it. However, access to so much data is still relatively new, and every marketer wishes they had the ability to draw more insights that lead to action. And being able to draw that insight is critical to success.

“The success of your content marketing efforts hinges on your ability to empathize and connect with your target audiences,” Annie Leuman, Content Strategist at TopRank Marketing, said. “As a result, you absolutely want to use data insights to develop a more holistic picture of your target buyers—their interests, problems, behaviors, and preferences. Taking the time to do this can help you ensure your strategy is built on data, not gut feel or assumptions.

Thankfully, rising and more established marketing technologies have the potential to make a big impact in that area in 2019 and beyond.

In April 2018, more than 6,800 marketing technology solutions were on the market, which was a 27% growth from the year before. And you can bet the number of solutions did and will continue to grow, and sophistication and refinement will happen as well.

It’s my prediction that forward-thinking brands and marketers will stop being satisfied with using only a fraction of the data they have. The hungriest marketers will be prioritizing their data and insight needs, and paying attention to and seeking out technology or partners that can help.

[bctt tweet="The hungriest marketers will be prioritizing their data and insight needs, and paying attention to and seeking out technology or partners that can help. @CaitlinMBurgess #ContentMarketingTrends" username="toprank"]

#4 - The Evolution of Content Marketing Sophistication

Content marketing is no longer a shiny object—it’s a core strategy and tactic for most B2B marketers. Content marketing is simply “marketing” in the modern digital era. In fact, in this year’s B2B Content Marketing 2019: Benchmarks, Budgets, and Trends—North America from Content Marketing Institute (CMI) and MarketingProfs, the percentage of marketers engaging in content marketing wasn’t called out in the opening slides. Instead, key insights centered on success drivers, tactical mixes, and so on.

To me, this signals that B2B content marketers are intimately aware that content marketing is a viable strategy and they’re committed. And that means more will be committed to growing their sophistication in 2019 and beyond.

However, marketers need to be aware that growing sophistication is rooted in “mastering simplicity.” Every content marketer wants to level-up their content marketing skills and results, but some may not have mastered the basics yet, like committing to a documented content marketing strategy, setting measurable goals, and putting a process in place for measuring and analyzing performance.

The CMI and MarketingProfs report makes one thing clear: As organizations grow in their content marketing maturity (i.e. drive sophistication), success grows, too.

via GIPHY

In 2019, B2B marketers who want to grow will need to do a gut check to ensure they have “the basics” locked down. And then, you’ll need to set measurable goals—goals that align with your overall objectives—for how you’ll grow content marketing maturity.

[bctt tweet="#ContentMarketing is no longer a shiny object—it’s a core strategy and tactic for most #B2B marketers. @CaitlinMBurgess" username="toprank"]

#5 - Mastering “Always-On” Promotion Will Further Enable Content Marketing Success

Marketers know that promotion and amplification is the culmination of all their other marketing efforts. But many haven’t adjusted their strategies to account for declining organic visibility, the rise of answer boxes in search, the increasing demand for more visual, engaging, and experiential content, and more.

Essentially, we all know the digital landscape and the types of content that are in demand have changed—and they’ll continue to evolve. That means how we promote content needs to change. And in some ways, that means going back to basics.

For TopRank Marketing, this means renewing (or beginning) a commitment to always-on promotion in 2019 and beyond. An email nurture and a few social posts simply can’t give your content the exposure it needs.

“Today’s world of information overload and the multitude of device options for consuming information makes standing out even more challenging,” Lee said recently. “Content promotion can’t be effective if it’s an afterthought.”

#6 - The Expansion of What’s Considered “Content”

Text. Images. Video. Audio. These are arguably the core content “categories” most B2B marketers are comfortable with. But, if they haven’t already, B2B marketers will have to look beyond these forms in 2019 and consider the role of content in emerging technologies. Namely, content that is delivered through IoT devices such as smart watches, cars, appliances, bots, and smart speakers.

While IoT devices are largely looked at under the consumer lens, consider these statistics for a moment:

  • 51% of the world’s top marketers say that they believe IoT will revolutionize the marketing landscape by 2020. (Source: Marketo)
  • 127 new devices connect to the internet every single second. (Source: McKinsey)
  • A whopping 75 billion devices are expected to be connected by the year 2025. (Source: Statista)

This means there’s an opportunity for all marketers to build data-driven relationships with customers in real-time, allowing you to tailor content to enhance experiences, resolve unreported problems, and create targeted offers based on behavior.

#7 - Democratized Content Creation Is Growing

For years, Lee has said: “Everyone is influential about something.” In 2019 and beyond, we’ll see this come to more vivid life.

With ubiquitous internet connectivity and a myriad of devices, everyone is empowered to publish and attract like-minded networks. For B2B marketers, this means developing networks of expert and/or influential collaborators to create content with for maximum impact.

“Influencer generated content has evolved past working with celebrities and brandividuals to engaging micro-influencers and nano-influencers, which are essentially all of us,” Lee notes. “Brands that create smart networks of collaborators will be not only scale the quantity of quality content they can create, but involve the very audience they’re marketing to in its creation.”

[bctt tweet="Brands that create smart networks of collaborators will be not only scale the quantity of quality content they can create, but involve the very audience they’re marketing to in its creation. @leeodden #ContentMarketing" username="toprank"]

#8 - The Undeniable Rise of Interactive

As I previously mentioned, the bar for content experiences was raised in 2018 with an increase in interactive and experiential content. Why? It’s no longer enough to inform buyers. Instead, you must provide story-driven content that connects on intellectual and emotional levels.

As consumer expectations (remember consumers are your buyers) increase, brands will need to invest in content quality and experience. From producing episodic content with production values near those seen in traditional media to interactive content that works across channels.

When it comes to interactive content, we’re not just talking about quizzes and polls. We’re talking about hyper-relevant, immersive, visual experiences that pull people in and allow them self-guide the journey. If you’re not convinced yet, the statistics speak for themselves:

According to the Content Marketing Institute (CMI) and Ion Interactive 2017 Interactive Content Study:

  • 87% of marketers agree that interactive content grabs the attention of the reader more effectively than static content.
  • 77% of marketers agree that interactive content has reusable value, resulting in repeat visitors and multiple exposures.
  • 73% of marketers agree that interactive content, when combined with other more traditional content marketing tactics, enhances message retention among their audiences.

Furthermore, we’ve seen it in action. Take a peek at this interactive piece centered on AI in Finance from our client, Prophix.

Example of Interactive Content from Prophix

You could get the same information across in a static eBook, of course. But this provides an experience—and results. Within the first 90 days after launch, we saw a 642% increase in asset engagement and a 10% conversion rate to the asset.

#9 - The Continued Rise of Influencer Integration

Influencer marketing has long been seen as a stand-alone promotion or PR function. But we believe that view is changing as more B2B brands dip their toe in the influencer marketing waters.

But the biggest trend and opportunity in 2019 will be investing your influencer efforts in content collaborations.

“As brands mature their approach to working with influencers from transactional campaign based engagements to ongoing relationships, the opportunities for influencer collaboration will expand beyond the marketing and PR departments to any department in an organization that produces public-facing content,” Lee said.

He added: “Content is both the vehicle to develop influencer relationships and an output as a result of those relationships. Influencer integration with content marketing will become a characteristic of successful marketers in 2019 and beyond.”

[bctt tweet="#Influencer integration with content marketing will become a characteristic of successful marketers in 2019 and beyond. @leeodden #ContentMarketingTrends" username="toprank"]

#10 - Demystified Content Marketing Measurement

According to the aforementioned CMI and MarketingProfs benchmarking study, a top challenge for marketers is measuring the performance of content. And this will undoubtedly continue to be a challenge in 2019 and beyond. But that doesn’t mean you can’t overcome barriers.

As with any type of measurement, it’ll important for you to determine what your metaphorical ruler will be. The success metrics of an individual piece of content will be different from your content ecosystem as a whole.

“The way you measure the success of a blog post, for example, will be different than your metrics for an eBook or product page,” Tiffani Allen, Senior Account Manager at TopRank Marketing said. “Start with your overall goals, then determine how each piece of content fits into those goals, and how you will measure progress.”

And as more B2B brands begin to document or refine their content marketing strategies and the associated metrics, even more headway will be made towards utilization of the analytics capabilities of content marketing platforms and analytics tools.

“This will allow marketers to go beyond the traditional analytics measures of pageviews, bounce rate and time-on-page,” Tiffani said. “For example, you can employ techniques like heat mapping to determine if there are particular areas of interest, conversion or drop-off within your visitors. Or, integrate your CRM data with your analytics data to track movement of prospects through the funnel.”

[bctt tweet="In 2019, more #B2B marketers will be have the strategy in place to go beyond traditional analytics, integrating techniques like heat mapping or #CRM integration to track movement of prospects through the funnel. - @Tiffani_Allen #ContentMarketing" username="toprank"]

Ready. Set. Bring it, 2019.

The digital landscape is in constant flux. And the form content takes and how it’s delivered is changing. But one thing that will never change is the importance of quality, insightful, and relevant content for informing, engaging, and inspiring your buying audience.

“Put your customer first,” Carla Johnson, President of Type A Communications, told us earlier this year. “Creating content that delivers value to them will always align your time, talent and resources with what delivers the best ROI.”

As I've been reading the series, I've been frequently wondering if one could do a simple infographic in one of two forms: a. From the perspective of an educational institution (more of a before and after pic) to show what piece of the pie AC is trying to grab; and/or, b. From the perspective of a writer/creator of the original content and how they can get / are paid. It seems like both would show shifting pathways, and NONE of the numbers that AC is trying to push. Either would seem like semi-powerful submissions to the Board.

(SmallTalk) 10 Tips for preparing a successful Business Creation Project in the Executive MBA - colineddie05      Cache   Translate Page

Any MBA or postgraduate study requires the completion of a final Master's project in which the student can demonstrate their worth through the knowledge learned during the training period. In the case of the Executive MBA of the Chamber of Commerce of Seville, this is also true and there are many future MBA graduates who ask how to do the Project easily and efficiently. As we know that it is a long and tedious task we have decided to help all of them by compiling 10 tips that we suggest in the preparation of the Master's thesis of the Executive MBA of the Chamber of Seville . You can read them below. 10 TIPS FOR MAKING A MASTER END JOB To carry out a Final Master Project, which is always carried out in work teams, which will surprise your teachers and colleagues, we make ten recommendations: 1. The choice of the sector and the project. Choosing the project sector is the most interesting stage for the student, which should focus on issues related to their professional profile, interests and experience. We must be clear about the sector of the Master MBA Sevilla project, in order to decide later on what the concrete project we want to develop will be. The totality of the subjects that are studied in the Seville MBA are of great relevance to carry out the project successfully, but we recommend that the subject be interesting and motivating for the student, which will influence the motivation and learning in the development process of the same. It is important to consult with the teachers of the Master to obtain advice about the viability of the Master project for this subject or sector. It can be a good point to know how to approach it from the beginning or to tell them the general idea to get some feedback. 2. The definition of objectives. Once the student is clear about the sector and the theme of their project, it is time to recognize that the main objective of the Master's thesis, in the case of the Executive MBA of the Chamber of Seville, is to prepare a Business Creation Project , along with other colleagues of the Master, that allows us to understand the importance of each area within the company and learn to make the right decisions. The student has to put himself in the shoes of a manager before the different situations that will arise during his Project. 3. Planning: research, analysis and documentation The student must prepare a calendar to plan the different tasks and phases that will be carried out throughout the time that the Master's thesis ends for the Executive MBA of the Chamber of Commerce of Seville. For this, it is important to search for information, research, data analysis and the corresponding planning. In the research process, the student collects as much information and documentation as possible about the sector, competitors, customers, etc. 4. Choice of structure Any final Master project must have a structure that brings together the different areas of the company , among other things. The student must mark a structure from the beginning and follow it to take his Project in an orderly and correctly planned manner. The Academic Department proposes a structure , which includes the main areas of the company: Company Strategy, Market Study, Marketing Plan, Operations Plan, Human Resources Plan and Financial Plan. The monitoring of the proposed structure or the generation of a new structure is left to the students' choice, as long as they justify the change for reasons of content, methodology or exposure. 5. Analysis of the subject: introduction, analysis of the sector, fundamentals, why it is interesting ... It is essential to start the Project with a powerful introduction that is able to attract the attention of both peers and teachers who will evaluate the final work. The introduction must state in a precise and concise way the points of the structure that the work will have. We must ask ourselves what is the reason for the unmet need that we find in the market and that justifies the realization of the Master MBA Seville project. From the introduction, the subject should be developed in an orderly and simple manner so that it is interesting for the recipients of it. To do it correctly, the sector should be studied and the most important proposals should be developed that will affect the main activity of the Project company in the short, medium and long term. 6. Development and writing of the project. With all the previous ideas clear, and after making the corresponding analysis and data structuring , it is time to move on to the development of the final MBA Master project of the Chamber of Commerce of Seville. The best recommendation that can be made is to expose and develop all the points of the project with the data that has been collected. Once this is done, all the data must be presented objectively and in the most professional way possible. The Project must present only objective results and show the application of the concepts and knowledge that students have acquired during the course. 7. Final conclusions. Every Project must have some conclusions and these should be clear enough. The first thing: we must make clear how the company will act in the different areas and the financial repercussions that it will have. Our work should be reflected in the Financial Plan , which will indicate if the Executive MBA Project of the Chamber of Commerce Sevilla is likely to be a profitable project and in what estimated amounts. For this it is important to avoid the detours and analyze all the areas of the created company, to determine how the different business techniques used have been applied. 8. Sources of information. In our Project of Creation of Company must be present all the places and the sources of information that have been necessary and have been used to be able to carry out the work. 9. Preparation of the oral presentation. The development of the work is important but the oral presentation will be its presentation , so it must be precise, persuasive and realistic. The members of the group that have been part of the Project must be coordinated and be coherent with each other. The final presentation of the Master MBA Seville Final Project takes place in work groups, so it is essential to carry out group presentation tests, coordinating all the members so that all the members are blended. It is time to demonstrate what you have learned and what you have been able to do. 10. Exhibition and end of the Master's final project The defense of the Project will last a maximum of 30 minutes and must include the oral presentation and additional specific material that serves to understand the project in the best possible way: tables, graphs, infographics, calculations and everything related to the activity of the company projected Finally, we recommend you to be calm the day of the presentation. If the student follows all these basic stages and has followed the Master with attention and dedication, he will have no problem in overcoming the Project of Creation of Company .

The rise of populist nationalist leaders is a turning point for global climate talks      Cache   Translate Page
The election of Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil is a turning point for the global politics of climate change.

The election of Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil not only marks the rise of another populist nationalist leader on the world stage. It’s also a turning point for the global politics of climate change.

When the new president takes office in January 2019, by my estimate at least 30 percent of global emissions will be generated from democracies governed by populist nationalist leaders.

As climate policymakers meet at this week’s UN climate conference in Poland (a country itself governed by a populist nationalist party) people who care about achieving the Paris Agreement goal should push for and develop new strategies for advancing policies to reduce emissions within countries headed by these leaders.

Populism and cutting national emissions

What is populist nationalism? Although both populism and nationalism are contested terms, political scientist Francis Fukuyama, offers this tidy synthesis of the characteristics associated with populist nationalists leaders in democracies.

Firstly, these leaders define “the people” narrowly to refer to a single national identity which is oftentimes anti-elitist. Secondly, they promote policies which are popular among their selected people, or base of support, in the short term but may not be in the long-term economic, social or environmental interests of the country. Thirdly, populist nationalists are expert at capitalizing on their supporters’ cultural fears about a loss of status in society.

Over the past five years there have been several populist electoral victories in countries that are among the highest emitters of greenhouse gases. This includes the U.S., India, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland and the Philippines. While these regimes each represent a different brand of populist nationalism, they exhibit the basic characteristics I’ve just described.

From my perspective as a scholar focused on global energy and climate policies, it’s clear that the political structure of populist nationalism makes introducing policies to reduce, or mitigate, emissions in democracies difficult.

Mitigation policies require leaders to expend short-term political capital for long-term economic and environmental gains. However, populists have shown a particularly strong disinterest for doing so, particularly if those short-term costs would affect their prioritized group of the people.

Perhaps the clearest example of this is President Donald Trump’s unwinding of the Clean Power Plan. It may bring short-term benefits to his base, which includes coal miners and related interests, but it is not aligned with long-term energy market trends in the U.S. toward natural gas, wind and solar for generating electricity and away from coal.

Resistant to global pressure

Secondly, as several country-level case studies have shown, developing policies to reduce national emissions is often a top-down and elite-driven activity. This is particularly true in high-emitting middle-income democracies like Mexico or Indonesia. In these countries, mitigation policies, like carbon taxes, have not emerged by way of large scale social movements but by top-down policy processes supported by international donors and nongovernment actors. In these countries, climate mitigation is at risk of being overridden by policies with more popular appeal.

In a forthcoming paper on Mexico, a colleague and I investigate incoming President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s (AMLO’s) mitigation policy. The AMLO administration has publicly committed to reduce emissions through a little-known set of carbon pricing policies, while at the same time responding to a popular demand to reduce fuel prices by increasing domestic oil refining. In the contest between the top-down mitigation policy and the widespread popular demands for low gasoline prices, it is likely that the latter will take priority.

A third issue relates to the international governance of climate mitigation. Under the Paris Agreement, governments are asked to progressively ratchet up their emission reduction goals. This mechanism assumes political leaders will respond to international pressure to increase their ambition. However, populist nationalists have shown that they are not motivated by international reactions to their climate policies.

Take Indonesian President Joko Widodo, for instance, who was elected into office in 2014. As I have described elsewhere, one of his first moves in office was to shut down a US$1 billion mitigation policy program funded by the Norwegian government. This decision to close the agency breached the bilateral agreement between Indonesia and Norway, and points to the disregard shown by some of these leaders to international political pressure.

As these short anecdotes suggest, the mechanism by which populist nationalists hold and retain political power makes it difficult to introduce climate mitigation policies. Their interest is to prioritize short-term programs which favor their select group of the people, rather than longer-term mitigating policies which have widespread economic and environmental benefits. Also, because they don’t comply with traditional norms of international relations, it will not be possible to coerce this group into meeting the Paris Agreement goals.

However, there are some ways countries that want to make reach consensus on global climate policies can better engage these leaders.

Ways to engage

As a starting point, it is important to emphasize the short-term benefits of climate mitigation policy to populists.

I believe policymakers and advocates would be well-served in drawing attention to how clean energy may bring multiple short-term benefits to the people on whose support these leaders rely, including lowering domestic air pollution, low cost energy, improved health outcomes and less reliance on foreign fuel imports. Indeed on some of these points, Bolsonaro, has recently said that he will increase the country’s hydropower and nuclear capacity.

Further, recent research suggests the cultural dimension of populist nationalism is of central importance. Rather than reducing emissions and tackling global climate change, it may be better to frame mitigation as part of a large-scale effort towards modernization; that is, modernizing energy systems, transportation systems and infrastructure. A narrative built around modernization, highlighting the economic and societal benefits for all, may resonate more with the disaffected middle classes who have led the rise of populist nationalism.

At the international level too there may be some approaches to ensuring the international governance regime continues in the face of this current wave of populist nationalism. As scholars David Victor and Bruce Joneshave recently argued, it may be useful to form small groups – or clubs – of countries which share similar interests to focus on clean technology and policy innovation. Focusing on shared interests within small clubs may work better than trying to push populist nationalists to comply with broad international agreements.

Populist nationalist leaders, like Bolsonaro, are the consequence of deeply entrenched economic, political and cultural shifts that have occurred in democracies over decades. These leaders, in other words, are likely to be a feature of democratic politics for some time into the future.

To continue to make progress on global climate agreements, I think it’s crucial that negotiating countries meet national populist leaders on their own terms for ongoing attempts to save the climate.

Trump predicts 'incredible' results from sentencing drug dealers to death — and shows why his sadistic strategies will only make things worse      Cache   Translate Page
Trump’s gleeful celebration of death is surreal.

This article was originally published by Filter, a magazine covering drug use, drug policy and human rights. Follow Filter on Facebook or Twitter.

A little before 9 am on December 5, President Trump tweeted the following about his recent fentanyl agreement with China:

One of the very exciting things to come out of my meeting with President Xi of China is his promise to me to criminalize the sale of deadly Fentanyl coming into the United States. It will now be considered a “controlled substance.” This could be a game changer on what is.......

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 5, 2018

.....considered to be the worst and most dangerous, addictive and deadly substance of them all. Last year over 77,000 people died from Fentanyl. If China cracks down on this “horror drug,” using the Death Penalty for distributors and pushers, the results will be incredible!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 5, 2018

People immediately pushed back against that figure of over 77,000 supposed fentanyl deaths. It’s incorrect. It seems likely that Trump got “70,000” from federal data released last week—the number of people who died from all drug overdoses in the US last year, not just fentanyl—and added 10 percent for good measure, to hype up support for his inconsequential “deal” with China.

Synthetic opioids like fentanyl were in fact involved in approximately 30,000 deaths in the US in 2017—still a staggering number, but less than half of the figure that Trump blithely shared with his 56.1 million followers.

Could Trump have been referring instead to some kind of global figure? Well, no. It’s impossible to find accurate global estimates of fentanyl-related fatalities, as definitions and reporting vary so much by country. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime states in its 2018 report: “Some 450,000 people died in 2015 as a result of drug use. Of those deaths, 167,750 were a direct result of drug use disorders [mainly overdoses], in most cases involving opioids.”

Worse than statistical innaccuracy, by describing fentanyl as a “horror drug,” Trump continues to exploit the US overdose crisis to rationalize brutal policies—whether advocating for the death penalty in China or the US, or for human rights abuses against refugees arriving from Mexico. “STOP THE DRUGS,” Trump tweeted on December 3, as a rationalization for building “the Wall.”

We would save Billions of Dollars if the Democrats would give us the votes to build the Wall. Either way, people will NOT be allowed into our Country illegally! We will close the entire Southern Border if necessary. Also, STOP THE DRUGS!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 3, 2018

Trump’s gleeful celebration of death is surreal, though not new. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called the death penalty“barbaric,” and demanded that the US—the world’s eighth most enthusiastic executioner—abolish the practice. “The death penalty has no place in the 21st century,” he said in October 2017. Among US citizens, support for the death penalty is at an all-time low.

China carries out the highest number of known executions in the world—thousands in 2017, although exact figures are hard to come by due to state controls. Four other countries—Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Pakistan—accounted for 84 percent of the confirmed executions in the rest of the world in 2017.

With no regard for the American people or the UN’s perspectives, Trump has repeatedly said that he “loves” the idea of the death penalty for drug dealers. He has also expressed an affinity for Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, whose murderous drug war has resulted in the killings—without trial—of over 12,000 peoplesuspected of drug-law violations. In 2017 Trump reportedly congratulated the Philippine president for doing an “unbelievable job on the drug problem.”

Despite Trump’s inaccurate number, he’s correct that the fentanyl overdose crisis is real. His sadistic strategies, however, will only make things worse.

SYRIAN WAR REPORT – DEC. 4, 2018: 270 SYRIAN ARMY ELIMINATED 270 ISIS MEMBERS IN AL-SUWAYDA PROVINCE      Cache   Translate Page

Government forces have eliminated more than 270 ISIS members as well as seized a large amount of weapons and munition, including 12 TOW anti-tank guided missiles, in the province of al-Suwayda since middle November, Oleg Makarevich, a spokesman for the command of the Russian task force in Syria, announced on December 3.
“The terrorists had been there for a long time, flocking to the area for several months. Among them were militants who were able to leave Yarmouk and Damascus in advance and also arrived from al-Tanf. Another difficulty was that tanks and heavy artillery have very limited maneuverability there, while the militants had many grenade launchers, anti-tank missiles and 82mm mortars,” the spokesman stated.
380km2 in eastern al-Suwayda was declared fully liberated from ISIS by the Syrian state media on November 17. Despite this, according to local sources, some number of ISIS cells still hide in the desert area south of al-Safa. Furthermore, a large presence of ISIS can observed in the Homs-Deir Ezzor desert. Therefore, claims of some pro-government sources that the terrorist group was fully eliminated on the western bank of the Euphrates are premature.
The US-controlled zone of al-Tanf is being actively used by ISIS terrorists as a safe haven to hide from Syrian Army attacks and to re-locate its forces in eastern Syria. While it exists, it’s not likely that ISIS cells could be fully wiped out in this part of the country.
From its side, the US-led coalition is contributing every possible effort to prevent any security operations of the Syrian Army near the al-Tanf zone. On December 2, the coalition shelled Syrian Army positions near the al-Ghurab mount at the border with Iraq. The US-led force reportedly employed M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) deployed at the al-Tanaf base.
The formal reason of the attack is unknown but US forces had repeatedly attacked Syrian Army units pursuing terrorists in the area on the edge of the so-called security zone near al-Tanf.
On December 3, the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) released a statement claiming that 11 Turkish-backed militants had been killed by the group in two fresh attacks in the Syrian area of Afrin.
On December 2, a YPG unit attacked a Jaysh al-Islam patrol in the village of Dermishmishe, near Afrin city. 5 Jaysh al-Islam members were reportedly killed and 3 others were wounded in the attack. Their vehicle was also destroyed.
On the same day, YPG fighters destroyed a military vehicle stationed at the headquarters of Ahrar al-Sham in the town of Jinderese. 6 Turkish-backed militants were killed and 8 others were wounded, according to the YPG report.
YPG attacks in Afrin will likely continue until the Turkish military and its proxies establish an effective security network in this part of Turkish-occupied Syria. However, a widely known incompetence and corruption within Turkish-backed militant groups delay and in some case even sabotage these Ankara-led efforts.

Cache   Translate Page

* The Crusades: an Arab Perspective

* The Crusades: An Arab Perspective -

'Flying to Hajj'

'Divided Jerusalem'

이외에도 웹툰 형태로 꾸민 'Lost childhoods: Nigeria's fear of 'witchcraft' ruins young lives'도 있고, 게임 형태를 한 'Coding like a girl'도 있다.

예를 들면 'Two Koreas: History at a glance' 기사에서는 한반도가 남북한으로 갈라지고 지금까지의 역사를 간략하게 그래픽으로 보여준다. 특히 팔레스타인은 수시로 다양한 형태로 역사를 요약한 기사를 내보낸다 (예: Palestine: What has been happening since WWI).

* History News

‘Fortnite’ developer will challenge Steam with its own digital game store      Cache   Translate Page
Steam isn't the only digital PC game store, but it has long been the dominant player in the industry. Many developers have attempted to break the Steam stranglehold with their own proprietary offerings -- Origin, Uplay, Battle.net -- but those stores are typically limited to games from the developers that run them. There simply aren't any true competitors to Steam, but on Tuesday, a new platform was unveiled that will undoubtedly grab Steam developer Valve's attention. In a blog post on its website, Fortnite developer Epic Games announced that it will soon launch its own online store for digital distribution, one which will feature its own games as well as a wide variety of games from other developers. And it has one hugely important advantage over Steam. "Developers receive 88% of revenue," said Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney in the post announcing the new store. "There are no tiers or thresholds. Epic takes 12%. And if you’re using Unreal Engine, Epic will cover the 5% engine royalty for sales on the Epic Games store, out of Epic’s 12%." Just to put this number into perspective, Valve takes 30% of the revenue from game sales on Steam. That's a fairly massive amount of money developers would be saving by selling their games on the Epic Games store instead of on Steam. Valve just announced a new system that will allow developers to take home more of the revenue when they meet certain thresholds, but even the top threshold isn't as generous as Epic's split. But that's just part of what makes the Epic Games store stand out. Epic also revealed that anyone who buys a game from a developer will be signed up for their newsfeed, and receive game updates and news about upcoming projects on the front page. Epic is also expanding its Support-A-Creator program beyond Fortnite. Now any developer can give a creator a cut of the sale when they when refer new players to buy the game. Developers will get their own game pages, there won't be any paid ads in search results, all game engines are welcome on the store, and Epic even plans to add support for "Android and other open platforms" in 2019. That said, Epic wasn't ready to announce a release date for the Epic Games store quite yet.

Are You Creeping Out Your Customers?      Cache   Translate Page

When does personalization become too personal? Research shows your current efforts could be creeping out your customers.

InMoment surveyed 2,000 consumers and 1,000 brands in the United States to find out where both groups aligned or disconnected on various customer experience (CX) topics. One topic that stood out was personalization, and their research found that brands' attempts to create personalized customer experiences weren't quite having the effect they imagined.

This infographic explains the ideas of approaching your audience in a less invasive manner that attracts customers rather than scaring them away.

Included in this infographic:

  • Personalization horror stories
  • How do customers react to brand creepiness?
  • How brands can avoid the "creepy" factor
