CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — After a two-year chase, a NASA spacecraft arrived Monday at the ancient asteroid Bennu, its first visitor in billions of years.

The robotic explorer Osiris-Rex pulled within 12 miles (19 kilometers) of the diamond-shaped space rock. It will get even closer in the days ahead and go into orbit around Bennu on Dec. 31. No spacecraft has ever orbited such a small cosmic body.

It is the first U.S. attempt to gather asteroid samples for return to Earth, something only Japan has accomplished so far.

Flight controllers applauded and exchanged high-fives once confirmation came through that Osiris-Rex made it to Bennu — exactly one week after NASA landed a spacecraft on Mars.

"Relieved, proud, and anxious to start exploring!" tweeted lead scientist Dante Lauretta of the University of Arizona. "To Bennu and back!"

With Bennu some 76 million miles (122 million kilometers) away, it took seven minutes for word to get from the spacecraft to flight controllers at Lockheed Martin in Littleton, Colorado. The company built the spacecraft there.

Bennu is estimated to be just over 1,600 feet (500 meters) across. Researchers will provide a more precise description at a scientific meeting next Monday in Washington.

About the size of an SUV, the spacecraft will shadow the asteroid for a year, before scooping up some gravel for return to Earth in 2023.

Scientists are eager to study material from a carbon-rich asteroid like dark Bennu, which could hold evidence dating back to the beginning of our solar system 4.5 billion years ago. As such, it's an astronomical time capsule.

A Japanese spacecraft, meanwhile, has been hanging out at another near-Earth asteroid since June, also for samples. It is Japan's second asteroid mission. This latest rock is named Ryugu and about double the size of Bennu.

Ryugu's specks should be here by December 2020, but will be far less than Osiris-Rex's promised booty.

Osiris-Rex aims to collect at least 60 grams, or 2 ounces, of dust and gravel. The spacecraft won't land, but rather use a 10-foot (3-meter) mechanical arm in 2020 to momentarily touch down and vacuum up particles. The sample container would break loose and head toward Earth in 2021.

The collection — parachuting down to Utah — would represent the biggest cosmic haul since the Apollo astronauts hand-delivered moon rocks to Earth in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

NASA has brought back comet dust and solar wind particles before, but never asteroid samples. Japan managed to return some tiny particles in 2010 from its first asteroid mission , also named Hayabusa.

Both Bennu and Ryugu are considered potentially hazardous asteroids. That means they could smack Earth years from now. At worst, Bennu would carve out a crater during a projected close call 150 years from now.

Contact with Bennu will not significantly change its orbit or make it more dangerous to us, Lauretta stressed.

Scientists contend the more they learn about asteroids, the better equipped Earth will be in heading off a truly catastrophic strike.

The $800 million Osiris-Rex mission began with a 2016 launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Its odometer read 1.2 billion miles (2 billion kilometers) as of Monday.

Both the spacecraft and asteroid's names come from Egyptian mythology. Osiris is the god of the afterlife, while Bennu represents the heron and creation.

Osiris-Rex is actually a NASA acronym for origins, spectral interpretation, resource identification, security-regolith explorer.

OSIRIS-REx, la nave

El estudio de los planetas es tan útil como interesante pero no sólo éstos pueden aportar información de gran valor científico. Como vecinos también tenemos un gran número de asteroides y ahora OSIRIS-REx ha llegado a Bennu, uno de éstos, pero no uno cualquiera.

La nave ha completado así un viaje de unos dos años desde que se lanzase el día 8 de septiembre de 2016. No se trata de una de esas sondas que morirá por la ciencia como Cassini, sino que su regreso es muy importante ya que nos ha de traer de vuelta una muestra de ese particular asteroide al que ya ha conocido de cerca.

Un viaje de ida y vuelta y un asteroide "especial"

Los asteroides son rocas de tamaño, forma y movimiento variable, sin atmósfera, cola o algún otro elemento propio de cometas o planetas. Pero pese a su aspecto yermo resultan ser un objetivo interesante para lo de siempre: conocernos mejor a nosotros mismos, o mejor dicho a nuestro origen, el del sistema solar y el de la Tierra.

¿Por qué entonces viajar hasta Bennu y no hasta cualquier otro? Porque aunque haya tantos asteroides muchos de ellos no se conocen bien a nivel de superficie y composición, y al final pocos, muy pocos, pasan los filtros que sólo Bennu logró pasar:

  • Proximidad: Bemmu está relativamente cercano a la Tierra (unos 2.000 kilómetros), lo cual en este caso era aún más importante al tratarse de una misión de ida y vuelta.
  • Órbita: Bennu se mueve de manera circular y no orbita irregularmente como otros asteroides, lo cual sería más inseguro para la misión.
  • Tamaño: cuanto más grande sea el asteroide, mejor, ya que los más pequeños rotan más deprisa y suelen proyectar materiales que podrían dañar a la sonda.
  • Composición química: como decíamos antes el objetivo es conocer mejor la historia del sistema solar y la Tierra, y por este motivo la composición química reducía los candidatos a doce (a los que se les conoce dicha composición), y de ésos sólo cinco eran propicios para tomar muestras al ser ricos en carbono, lo cual es importante de cara a encontrar moléculas orgánicas. De éstos se eligió Bennu porque estaba más estudiado, de modo que se tenía más certeza de que su superficie fuese conveniente para aterrizar y recoger muestras.

¿Y qué hará exactamente OSIRIS-REx? Antes vayamos con las presentaciones, porque para variar los estadounidenses han hecho su magia con las siglas para que quede este nombre que nos recuerda a reyes y dioses. Se trata de la nave Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer, encargada de llegar hasta el asteroide para hacer un estudio sobre él y recoger muestras.

Ahora se encuentra a unos 19 kilómetros de la superficie de Bennu para realizar una exploración preliminar del cuerpo celeste, aproximándose hasta unos 7 kilómetros, con lo que se podrá redefinir la masa, la tasa de giro y la forma del asteroide. Esto servirá para determinar los sitios potenciales para la toma de muestras: 60 gramos de regolitos (es decir, rocas y polvo sobre una superficie inalterada).

60 gramos de récord para la NASA

El principio y el fin de nuestros tiempos siguen siendo dos de los pedales de aceleración que sugieren nuevas misiones espaciales, como es el caso de ésta. La idea es no sólo intentar conocer mejor la formación de planetas, sino también poder determinar con mejor grado qué ocurriría si un asteroide impactase en la Tierra.

Por otro lado está la presencia de ciertos componentes y lo que ya planteamos hace unos meses con esa "fiebre del oro" que parece estar renaciendo más allá de la exoesfera. Los asteroides contienen componentes orgánicos, agua y metales entre otros, lo cual se mira con ojos con sed de exploración y desarrollo económico por parte de numerosas empresas.

Si todo va bajo lo previsto OSIRIS-REx orbitará Bennu el 31 de diciembre a unos 492 metros, con lo cual el asteroide pasará a ser el objeto más pequeño orbitado jamás por un vehículo de construcción humana. Y si finaliza la misión volviendo sano y salvo en septiembre de 2023, será la primera misión estadounidense en tomar muestras de un asteroide y devolverlas a la Tierra, así como recoger la muestra más grande desde la era Apollo.

WASHINGTON. Una aeronave de la NASA llegó hoy a la órbita de Bennu, un asteroide primitivo compuesto de las moléculas que dieron origen a la vida en la Tierra y que podría aportar nueva información sobre la historia del Sistema Solar.

“Bennu está cubierto de material carbónico y principios orgánicos, las bases constructoras de la vida”, explicó la científica adjunta del proyecto Amy Simon durante la retransmisión de la llegada de la aeronave.

La misión, apodada OSIRIS-REx, tiene como uno de sus objetivos principales la extracción de una muestra de este asteroide para enviarla a la Tierra, señaló la Agencia Espacial Estadounidense.

Para hacer llegar a la Tierra esa pieza, la aeronave cuenta con un dispositivo que propulsará una cápsula con la muestra en su interior y que deberá cruzar la atmósfera de nuevo hasta aterrizar entre los estados de California y Nevada (EE.UU.).

“Es algo muy emocionante y que nunca antes hemos hecho”, afirmó el científico instrumental de OSIRIS-REx, Dennis Reuter.

Los científicos de la NASA consideran que este asteroide primitivo se formó en una colisión cósmica contra un protoplaneta hace aproximadamente mil millones de años.

La aeronave acompañará a partir de ahora a Bennu como si fuera su satélite para así conocer cómo funciona el movimiento de los asteroides que viajan por el Sistema Solar sin una onda gravitatoria definida.

Después, en 2020, extraerá la muestra, que no llegará a la Tierra hasta 2023, calculó la directora de aeronaves de esta misión, Sandy Freund.

“Después de dos años de viaje y más de una década de planificación y trabajo estoy aquí. Pero la llegada es solo el principio”, publicó en Twitter el perfil de la misión en su cuenta oficial @OSIRISREx.

Los ingenieros y técnicos han seguido esta fase crítica del proyecto desde las oficinas de control Lockheed Martin, en el estado de Colorado.

El responsable de la iniciativa, Javier Cerna, dio por concluida la llegada de la aeronave en torno a las 12.00 local del Este de EE.UU. (17.00 hora GMT) con exitoso resultado.

A Osiris-Rex, sonda de exploração do espaço profundo da Agência Aeroespacial dos Estados Unidos (Nasa), chegou na segunda-feira (3) a uma distância de poucos quilômetros de seu destino, um asteroide do tamanho de um arranha-céu que pode ter compostos orgânicos fundamentais para a vida –e também o potencial de colidir com a Terra em cerca de 150 anos.


Lançada em setembro de 2016, a Osiris-Rex iniciou a missão inédita de sete anos para analisar de perto o asteroide Bennu, coletar uma amostra de sua superfície e levar o material de volta à Terra para estudos.

O Bennu, uma massa rochosa de cerca de 500 metros de largura, orbita o sol praticamente à mesma distância da Terra, e pode ser rico em moléculas orgânicas baseadas em carbono que datam dos primeiros dias do sistema solar. A água, outro componente vital para a evolução da vida, também pode estar presente nos minerais do asteroide.

Cientistas acreditam que asteroides e cometas que caíram na Terra em seu período inicial liberaram compostos orgânicos e água, semeando o planeta para a vida, e análises atômicas de amostras do Bennu podem ajudar a provar essa teoria.


Mas existe uma outra razão, mais existencial, para se estudar Bennu.

A Osiris-Rex ajudará os cientistas a entenderem como o calor radiado do sol está conduzindo o Bennu em uma rota cada vez mais ameaçadora através do sistema solar.

Humanos ancestrais acasalavam (e muito!) com neandertais

Descendentes de ancestrais que migraram para fora da África possuem fragmentos de DNA neandertal, e agora uma nova análise de dados de ancestralidade genética humana mostra que os humanos ancestrais se acasalavam frequentemente com neandertais.

O estudo indica que o acasalamento interespécies acontecia bastante durante os 30 mil anos em que as duas espécies se sobrepuseram na história do planeta Terra, e esses trechos de DNA neandertal que são encontrados ainda hoje em nossa genética são resultado disso. "Não foi uma só vez que humanos e neandertais se cruzaram; eles se sobrepuseram por dezenas de milhares de anos e ocorreram interações múltiplas", explicou Joshua Schraiber, pesquisador e co-autor do estudo.

Já era sabido que humanos e neandertais procriaram uns com os outros, mas o novo estudo mostra que isso aconteceu em uma escala muito mais ampla do que o imaginado.

Empresas privadas em novo programa lunar

Nove empresas foram reveladas pela NASA como as competidoras para fazer parte do novo programa lunar da agência espacial, que será uma iniciativa público-privada para desenvolver tecnologias de exploração na superfície da Lua.

A empresa escolhida construirá veículos de lançamento e robôs exploratórios nos próximos 10 anos, arcando com parte do investimento de US$ 2,6 bilhões. A partir de 2022, a NASA quer construir um laboratório espacial na órbita lunar, que será uma espécie de "pit stop" para futuras missões.

Sucesso com lançamento de astronautas à ISS com o foguete Soyuz

Depois de um acidente ocorrido em outubro, que exigiu o retorno emergencial da equipe de astronautas que estava indo à Estação Espacial Internacional, agora a Rússia conseguiu fazer um novo lançamento de sucesso. Três astronautas chegaram em segurança à ISS, onde viverão por seis meses e meio e, temporariamente, trabalharão com os astronautas que hoje ainda estão por lá.

Telescópios combinados detectam mais de 100 exoplanetas

Uma equipe internacional de astrônomos combinou telescópios terrestres e espaciais para detectar mais de 100 exoplanetas em apenas três meses de pesquisa. A equipe investigou 227 candidatos a exoplanetas usando a combinação de telescópios, confirmando que 104 deles eram mesmo planetas orbitando outras estrelas além do Sol.

Entre as descobertas, estão sete cujos períodos orbitais são menores de 24 horas, e muitos planetas rochosos de baixa massa, além de sistemas planetários com múltiplos exoplanetas.

Estudando o asteroide Bennu

Enfim, depois de dois anos de jornada, a sonda OSIRIS-REx da NASA chegou a seu destino: o asteroide Bennu. A 20 km acima da superfície, a sonda vai começar a mapear a superfície do objeto para encontrar o melhor local onde coletará amostras de solo e rocha, trazendo-as para a Terra posteriormente.

A ideia é estudar o asteroide a fim de entender um pouco mais sobre a formação do Sistema Solar. Além disso, Bennu está na lista de candidatos potencialmente perigosos, pois há o risco de ele entrar em contato com a Terra nos anos 2100. Por isso, a sonda foi enviada para lá, especificamente, e não para qualquer outro asteroide. A missão durará 7 anos no total, com previsão de retorno à Terra para setembro de 2023.

Curiosity avista misterioso objeto brilhante em Marte

Explorando o Planeta Vermelho desde 2012, o rover Curiosity segue caminhando por lá em busca de novas descobertas. Agora, o rover avistou um objeto brilhante que ainda é misterioso para a NASA, podendo ser, na verdade, um meteorito.

Contudo, será necessário fazer uma análise química para bater o martelo de que o objeto brilhante é mesmo um meteorito. Para isso, a agência usará o instrumento ChemCam do rover. Além deste, outros dois objetos encontrados pelo Curiosity também serão analisados para que saibamos do que se tratam.

NASA vai mapear as florestas da Terra

Por meio de um instrumento de reconhecimento de imagem de alta tecnologia enviado à Estação Espacial Internacional, a NASA vai criar um mapa 3D sem precedentes das florestas da Terra. O objetivo é criar projetos para estabilizar o clima do planeta.

O GEDI (Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation) conta com um altímetro a laser e nos dará as melhores estimativas da biomassa das florestas, bem como quanto carbono elas armazenam. Com desmatamentos e outros distúrbios, certas florestas acabam perdendo seu poder de absorver carbono da atmosfera, liberando o elemento, que fica concentrado na atmosfera e, consequentemente, há o efeito estufa. Então, precisamos entender melhor esse balanço global de carbono, entendendo como ele está distribuído espacialmente nas florestas.

Identificadas quatro colisões de buracos negros

Quatro novos casos de colisões de buracos negros foram identificados por físicos, com essas colisões enviando ondas gravitacionais em direção à Terra. Entre elas, está a maior colisão já registrada.

Quando dois buracos negros colidem, eles se combinam e criam um buraco negro ainda maior, liberando o excesso de massa como energia — energia esta que viaja pelo espaço no formato de ondas gravitacionais. Usando dados do LIGO e do Virgo, os pesquisadores identificaram esses quatro eventos que aconteceram em 2017 a uma distância entre 1,044 bilhão e 8,97 bilhões de anos-luz.

Uma dessas quatro colisões, inclusive, resultou em um buraco negro com 80 vezes a massa do Sol — quase duas vezes a média de massa observada em buracos negros resultantes de estrelas colapsadas. Uma explicação para um buraco negro tão massivo pode ser a seguinte: dois buracos negros se fundiram e, então, houve a colisão com um terceiro.

La sonda OSIRIS-REx alcanzó el asteroide Bennu en una de esas largas misiones que nos tendrán en vilo durante años así como los dos que tardó en llegar al encuentro con esta roca de curiosa forma y un diámetro aproximado de 500 metros.

El objetivo es primero explorar la superficie durante un año y medio, luego "tocar" apenas el asteroide y llevarse una porción de pocos gramos de éste. La idea es volver a la tierra con la preciada carga.

Bennu es un asteroide interesante, mucho contenido de carbono, mucha información para entender el origen del sistema solar ya que se estima su origen de hace unos 4.500 millones de años y, de paso, uno de esos objetos que en algún momento de su vida podrían llegar a ser una amenaza seria contra la Tierra o cualquiera de los planetas interiores porque pasará MUY cerca de nuestro planeta en los próximos cien años (si, ya se, no algo de lo que deberíamos preocuparnos todavía :P ).

Luego de un año de esta exploración la muestra deberá recorrer el camino de retorno durante otros dos años hasta alcanzar la Tierra y descender. Si todo sale bien será la primera muestra física de un asteroide, algo ya de por sí remarcable.

Shadows of Kilforth: February 2019!!

Now that the printing of Lifeform has begun, we're just a few short months away from the games and expansions finally arriving in your hands. We've also submitted the print files for our landmark game Gloom of Kilforth and its expansions, which will be landing in Quarter 1 next year too. And our second game 1066, Tears to Many Mothers has just landed in backers' hands to fantastic reviews too.

Next year we'll be launching 1565, St Elmo's Pay (the successor to 1066, TtMM) and Sublime Dark (a gruesome horror game), but first we'll be launching Shadows of Kilforth: A Fantasy Quest Game (previously known as Touch of Death). So it is with delight and giddiness that I can tell you we're going to hit the launch button for our next game Shadows of Kilforth in February next year!

To those waiting for Lifeform first instead: that's totally cool too, just don't mind us whilst we crack on, and hopefully we'll see you in the pledge manager later on once you have fallen in love with your evil alien goodies...

Sonda OSIRIS-REx zakończyła w poniedziałek swoją 2-letnią podróż na asteroidę Bennu. Statek kosmiczny został wysłany przez agencję NASA celem zbadania potencjalnie niebezpiecznej dla Ziemi planetoidy.

 

Sonda OSIRIS-REx została wystrzelona w przestrzeń kosmiczną 8 września 2016 roku z pomocą rakiety nośnej Atlas-V z Przylądka Canaveral na Florydzie. W poniedziałek, 3 grudnia 2018 roku, dotarła do swojego celu. Statek kosmiczny przebywa około 19 km nad powierzchnią Bennu, która posiada średnicę około 500 metrów, i rozpocznie teraz wstępne badania planetoidy. OSIRIS-REx wykona niskie przeloty nad biegunami oraz regionem równikowym asteroidy.

 

Głównym zadaniem sondy kosmicznej jest ustalenie dokładnej masy planetoidy Bennu i jej ruchu obrotowego oraz stworzenie precyzyjnego modelu jej kształtu. Dane te pozwolą wybrać odpowiednią lokalizację dla pobrania próbek gruntu.

Po uzyskaniu odpowiednich informacji o tym ciele niebieskim, sonda OSIRIS-REx rozpocznie manewr wejścia na orbitę Bennu, co powinno nastąpić 31 grudnia. Będzie to mieć kluczowe znaczenie dla przyszłych badań asteroidy oraz pobrania próbek, które następnie zostaną dostarczone na Ziemię.

 

Misja kosmiczna agencji NASA pozwoli nie tylko lepiej zrozumieć proces formowania się planet i asteroid. Naukowcy będą mogli dokładniej przyjrzeć się potencjalnie niebezpiecznej planetoidzie. Według obliczeń, Bennu może uderzyć w Ziemię w latach 2169-2199, gdy zbliży się do naszej planety aż ośmiokrotnie. W grę wchodzą także minerały, które NASA zdobędzie dzięki sondzie OSIRIS-REx. Statek kosmiczny pozostanie na orbicie Bennu aż do marca 2021 roku i powróci na Ziemię we wrześniu 2023 roku.

Las buenas noticias son que es bastante improbable que algún objeto del espacio exterior impacte contra la Tierra. Así que estamos seguros. Por ahora.

Gema Parreño protagoniza este vídeo de Google en el que explica que se dedica a «detectar fraudes bancarios durante el día y asteroides por las noches». Una peculiar doble vida que la llevó a presentarse junto con su equipo al concurso Space App Challenge de la NASA con un software que llamaron Deep Asteroid y que además quedó entre los mejores.

Desarrollado con TensorFlow porque es un desarrollo que necesita mucha potencia para analizar conjuntos masivos de datos, el software en sí es un modelo que estudia los conjuntos de datos que recoge la NASA. Mediante aprendizaje automático aprende a detectar si si los NEOS (Objetos Cercanos a la Tierra) como los asteroides cambian de color, forma o composición, para predecir lo que sucederá a continuación. Cuantas más capas de datos puede analizar, mejor, porque más afinados son los resultados (que luego se pueden enviar a los científicos oportunos).

El vídeo muestra algunas escenas grabadas en el Real Observatorio de Madrid, emblemático paraje donde los haya. Parreño no es la única cazadora de asteroides del mundo, y es bueno saber que esa cifra sigue creciendo porque es uno de los peores problemas –y desde luego con peor solución– a los que podría enfrentarse nuestro planeta en algún momento del futuro.

Después de algo más de dos años y dos meses de viaje la sonda Osiris-REX de la NASA ha igualado su órbita con la del asteroide Bennu, que es el destino de la misión. En los próximos días la sonda sobrevolará los polos y el ecuador del asteroide para para medir con exactitud el tamaño del asteroide y hacer un cartografiado preliminar de Bennu para que el equipo de navegación adquiera los puntos de referencia necesarios para planear al detalle las siguientes maniobras.

La sonda va a Bennu en detalle con los instrumentos de a bordo, que consisten en tres cámaras, un altímetro láser que le permitirá crear un mapa topográfico detallado de su superficie, y tres espectrómetros que servirán para estudiar su composición. Pero el objetivo final de la misión es traer una muestra de al menos 60 gramos del material de su superficie, aunque puede llegar a ser de hasta dos kilos, para que sea estudiada en Tierra.

La toma de muestras está prevista para julio de 2020, pero antes de eso Osiris-REX habrá tenido que estudiar Bennu desde pocos cientos de metros para escoger primero cuatro puntos candidatos para la toma de muestras y finalmente uno según la composición que revelen los instrumentos.

Correrá a cargo de Tagsam, de Touch-And-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism, un mecanismo que permitirá a la sonda coger ese máximo de 2.000 gramos de material de Bennu para traerlos de vuelta a la Tierra.

El viaje de vuelta lo emprenderá en 2021 y llegará de vuelta a principios de 2023, cuando, cuatro horas antes de su máxima aproximación a la Tierra, soltará la cápsula de muestras, que aterrizará en el desierto de Nevada convenientemente frenada por unos paracaídas. Si todo va bien será la primera misión de la NASA en traer de vuelta muestras de la superficie de un asteroide. Y si se trae los dos kilos completos establecerá un récord de peso en lo que se refiere a traer de vuelta muestras de cualquier tipo desde los tiempos de las misiones Apolo

Bennu fue escogido de una lista inicial de 7.000 objetivos potenciales. Tenía cuatro cosas a su favor: estaba relativamente cerca de la Tierra, gira relativamente despacio, su forma parecía relativamente suave, y químicamente resulta interesante; es como una muestra del sistema solar conservada desde sus tiempos primigenios.

Eine Wanderung von Weltraumtitanen, Plasmastürme, Asteroiden oder Weltraum-Raubtiere sollen für mehr Abwechslung auf den Schlachtfeldern sorgen.

Die Weltraum-Schlachten mit Imperium (Imperiale Flotte), Space Marines, Adeptus Mechanicus, Necrons, Chaos, Eldarkorsaren, Eldar-Weltenschiffe, Dark Eldar, Handels- und Schutzflotten der Tau, Orks und den Tyraniden sollen am 24. The Geminids are unusual meteor shower in that their parent body is 3200 Phaethon, an asteroid, rather than a comet. It is speculated though that Phaeton is actually a "gassed out" comet, and so the debris that makes up the Geminids may still be cometary particles, but is more likely broke rock fragments from its close approach to the sun.

The Geminids are a fairly reliable meteor shower and this year moonlight will not significantly interfere. Some decent meteors rates should be seen.

Unlike the Leonids, where there is a very narrow peak of high activity, the Geminids have a broad peak and will show good activity well before and after the peak, and on the day before and after. The peak is December 14, 12h 30m UT. That is 23:30 pm AEDST December 14 in Australia.  This is just before the Moon set, and before the radiant is high enough for decent rates, but there will still be very goor rates from around 2-3 am AEDST (1-2 am AEST) on the morning of the 15th in Australia. As the radiant doesn't rise until just before midnight (daylight saving time) in most of Australia, so you will still have to disturb your sleep for this one.

Australians should see a meteor every two to three minutes under dark skies in the early morning of the 15th, between 1:00 am and 4:00 am local daylight saving time. You can find predictions for your local site at the meteor flux estimator (choose 4 Geminids and date 14-15 December, don't forget to change the date to 2018). I have also made a table for major citiess below.

Unfortunately, both Chrome and Firefox have changed their security settings to prevent plugins from running, and the flux estimator only runs under Internet Explorer now.

At 1.00 am in the morning AEDST (midnight, AEST) Castor (alpha Geminorum) is about two hand-spans above the horizon and 10 hand-spans to the right of due north. Pollux, the other twin, is less than a hand-span to the right again. The radiant is just below Pollux.

When you get up, allow at least 5 minutes for your eyes to adjust and become dark adapted (even if you have stumbled out of bed in the dark, here's some hints on dark adaption of your eyes so you can see meteors better) and be patient, it may be several minutes before you are rewarded with you first meteor, then a couple will come along in quick succession (a meteor every three minutes is an average, they won't turn up like a ticking clock but more or less randomly).

Choose a viewing spot where you can see a large swathe of sky without trees or buildings getting in the way, or with street lights getting in your eyes. The darker the spot the better (but do be sensible, don't choose a spot in an insalubrious park for example). While the radiant is where the meteors appear to originate from, most of the meteors will be seen away from the radiant, so don't fixate on the radiant, but keep your eye on a broad swath of sky roughly centred just above the radiant (as the radiant doesn't rise very high, looking exactly at the radiant will mean you miss some higher up).

A lawn chair or something similar will make your observing comfortable (or a picnic rug spread on the ground and a nice pillow), and having a Thermos of hot coffee, tea or chocolate to swig while watching will increase your comfort. Despite it being summer, make sure you have a jumper or something as the night can still get cold

As well, Orion and the Hyades will be visible and bright Venus, rises an two and a half hours before sunrise. So it will be a quite nice morning for sky watching. Keep an eye out for satellites!

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft was launched in 2016, but today it will begin to orbit its destination: the asteroid Bennu. When it does, Benniu will break the record for the smallest object ever orbited by a manmade spacecraft. NASA announced today that its Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer, known as OSIRIS-REx, has rendezvoused with the asteroid Bennu. Utah State University’s Space Dynamics Laboratory provided the detector assemblies for the OSIRIS-REx Camera Suite, called OCAMS, instruments.

Launched on September 8, 2016 aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, OSIRIS-REx has traveled more than two billion kilometers to the asteroid and will bring a small sample back to Earth for study. Encapsulated samples of the asteroid will land in Utah in 2023. These samples will help scientists answer questions about the formation of Earth and our solar system. Asteroids are the residual remains of the solar system formation process and can teach us about the history of the sun and planets. Traveling at 63,000 miles per hour, Bennu is classified as a Near Earth Object with an orbit that comes relatively close to our planet.

“We’ve been proud of our participation on this great mission and pleased with the performance of the OCAMS detector assemblies during the initial two-years. Beginning with images of Earth and our Moon during the early stages of OSIRIS-REx’s flight, then to our first images of Bennu, and up to today, the detector assemblies have been working as designed,” said Jed Hancock, SDL’s executive director of programs and operations and SDL program manager for OSIRIS-REx. “Over the next year, NASA will use the cameras to map the surface of the asteroid and help locate a suitable location for sample collection operations.”

SDL partnered with the University of Arizona who provided the three-camera suite which includes PolyCam, an 8-inch telescope that acquired the asteroid from about two million kilometers away. As it approached Bennu, PolyCam imaged the asteroid at high resolution. MapCam has been searching the area around Bennu for natural satellites and outgassing plumes. It will map the asteroid in four colors, determine the exact shape of it and will provide a high-resolution image of the sample site. SamCam will document the sample acquisition and the spacecraft’s touch-and-go maneuver.

Bennu was chosen by NASA for the OSIRIS-REx mission because if its proximity to Earth, its size and its composition. At the time of the mission’s asteroid selection in 2005, there were only 192 asteroids classified as Near Earth Objects that met NASA’s proximity requirements. 

Asteroids with small diameters rotate more rapidly than those with large diameters. Asteroids less than 200 meters spin so rapidly that the loose material on its surface, known as regolith, can be ejected from it. Of the 192 NEO asteroids, only 26 had a diameter larger than 200 meters. NASA also looked for primitive asteroids – those that are carbon-rich and have not significantly changed since they formed nearly four billion years ago – that contain organic molecules, volatiles, and amino acids that may have been the precursors to life on Earth. Only five asteroids met all criteria.

With a diameter of about 500 meters, Bennu completes an orbit around the Sun every 1.2 years, and every six years comes very close to Earth. According to NASA, these close encounters give Bennu a high probability of impacting Earth in the late 22nd Century.

·       RBI has liberalised the norms governing external commercial borrowings for infrastructure creation.

·       Justice S K Seth, senior-most judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
·       Justice Sanjay Karol, the most senior judge of Himachal High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court.
Appointment of CJs of 4 HC cleared – I
·       The government of India cleared the appointment of Chief Justices of High Courts of Allahabad, Patna, Madhya Pradesh and Tripura on 10 November 2018.
·       Justice Govind Mathur, a senior judge of Rajasthan High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court.
·       Justice A P Sahi, senior judge of Allahabad High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Patna High Court.
·       Peter inducted into Agricultural Hall of Fame
·       Peter Dhillon, a Canadian Sikh farmer, has been inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame. He has joined the company of great Canadians who have made their mark in agriculture and agro-food business. He is also the current Chairman of Ocean Spray, a marketing cooperative of cranberry farmers in the U.S. and Canada.
NASA to send organs on chips to space
NASA is planning to send small devices containing human cells in a 3D matrix — known as tissue chips or organs-on-chips — to the International Space Station (ISS). This will help in knowing how the cells respond to stress, drugs and genetic changes. Tissue chips are made of flexible plastic. They have ports and channels to provide nutrients and oxygen to the cells inside them.
VP inaugurated war memorial in France
On 10 November 2018, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated a war memorial in France to pay tribute to thousands of Indian soldiers who died in the World War I. The memorial is the first-of-its-kind built by India in France. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu is in Paris to represent India at the Armistice of World War I centenary commemoration.
National Education Day observed on November 11
National Education Day is celebrated in India on November 11. The day is celebrated as a mark of respect to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He was a freedom fighter and independent India’s first Education Minister (served from 1947 to 1958). He was an eminent scholar of Urdu, Persian and Arabic. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

‘Quad’ to meet in Singapore on 14 November
Officials from Australia, India, Japan and the United States will hold the third ‘Quadrilateral’ or Quad meeting in Singapore on 14 November 2018. The meeting will be held on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit. The meeting will focus on infrastructure projects, maritime security cooperation and discuss regional challenges including development.
Scientists discovered two planets
Astronomers have discovered two new rogue planets that do not have stars to orbit. Researchers found the planets in the regions called the Galactic bulge and disk. As planets don’t orbit stars and are ‘free-floating,’ it’s difficult to determine the size. One planet could be similar in size to Earth, while another one may be similar to Jupiter.
NASA spotted new iceberg in Antartica
NASA has spotted an enormous new Antarctic iceberg while on a mission to survey the region’s shifting sea ice and glaciers. NASA’s Operation IceBridge flight spotted the giant berg which broke off from Pine Island Glacier in October 2018. The US National Ice Centre estimates the iceberg named B-46, is 66 square nautical miles (87 square miles) in size.
ISRO invites foreign experiments
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has taken its first step towards its mid-2023-planned mission to Venus. It issued an announcement of opportunity (AO) to the international space community to propose their scientific payloads to be carried on the mission. This AO for space-based experiments to study Venus is open to international scientists from various space agencies.
ISRO looking at pool of 10 experiments
After the announcement of Gaganyaan mission, ISRO has now drawn up a list of experiments to be conducted ahead of the mission. ISRO is looking at a pool of 10 experiments to be conducted in low earth orbit, where it plans to send astronauts. The experiments could include testing of medical equipment to micro-biological experiments such as biological air filters and biosensors.
Cyclone Gaja to cross Tamil Nadu & Andhra
A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm named Cyclone Gaza. It is likely to cross the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast on 15 November 2018. It is moving at a speed of 12 kmph is likely to intensify into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’. The coastal areas of north Tamil Nadu would experience moderate rainfall and heavy rainfall.
Voting began in Chattisgarh
The voting for the first phase of the assembly election in Chhattisgarh began on 12 November 2018. The Election Commission has set up five all-women polling booths called ‘Sangwari’ booths in various constituencies of Chhattisgarh. This will encourage women voters to exercise their franchise in the Assembly elections. These women friendly booths are being manned by all-female staff.
ASEAN countries inked 1st e-commerce agreement
Economic ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on 12 November 2018 signed an agreement to facilitate cross-border e-commerce transactions within the region. The agreement is the grouping’s first agreement on e-commerce. It also aims to deepen cooperation among ASEAN member states so as to spur the use of e-commerce as a way of driving regional economic growth.
Kochi signed a MoU with Vilnius
Kochi Corporation and Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 10 November 2018. The MoU is a part of the European Union (EU) project ‘International Urban Cooperation’. The primary focus of the cooperation would be urban planning, corporate planning, transport, solid water management and water management.
Power Minister inaugurated INSPIRE 2018
R K Singh, Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy inaugurated the ‘International Symposium to Promote Innovation & Research in Energy Efficiency’ (INSPIRE 2018) on 11 November 2018. It is being organised by Energy Efficiency Services Limited and World Bank. It will focus on enhancing grid management, e-Mobility, and technologies for energy efficiency in India.
India and Morocco signed an Agreement
An Agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters was signed between the Government of India and Government of the Kingdom of Morocco. It will strengthen bilateral cooperation with Morocco. It will provide a broad legal framework for the prevention, investigation and prosecution of crimes as well as in tracing, restraint and confiscation of funds meant to finance terrorist acts.
Delhi’s air quality in severe category
Delhi’s air quality continues to be in a severe category. An Air Quality Index between 401 and 500 is considered as severe. There are 6 AQI categories, namely Good, Satisfactory, Moderately polluted, Poor, Very Poor, and Severe. The AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality. AQI focuses on particulate matter, ground-level ozone, Sulphur Dioxide, Nitrogen Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide.
WEF Global Future Councils began in Dubai
The two-day annual meeting of World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Future Councils began in Dubai on 11 November 2018. The objective of the Annual Meeting of the Global Future Councils is to convene the world’s best network of experts to identify new ideas and models that can be applied to critical global challenges. The theme of the meeting is ‘Globalisation 4.0’.
Six-month ban on fish import
Goa government introduced a six-month ban on fish import effective from 12 Nov 2018. The decision has been taken in view of continuing uncertainty about the presence of formalin in imported fish in Goa. The decision has been taken by Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane. This is the second ban this year on fish import, the earlier one was for fifteen days in July.
