Grip on Sports: The M's that were will not be the M's of next year      Cache   Translate Page

A GRIP ON SPORTS • Nothing is final until it’s final. Didn’t Yogi Berra say that? Well, he should have. I do know one thing. If Yogi had been a Mariner this season, Jerry Dipoto would have traded him and his malapropisms to the Nationals or someone. And thrown in money to help cover his contract. Read on.

••••••••••

• If you are a Mariner fan, you might want to pull out a legal pad and start making notes. The roster the franchise has today looks nothing like the one it had on opening day last season. And probably doesn’t resemble the one it will have on opening day next year.

The Robinson Cano Epoch is over. So is the Jean Segura Era. And the eras of Mike Zunino, Edwin Diaz and almost any other recognizable player you can name.

Dipoto blew it all up. To quote an old TV show, he blew it up real good.

James Paxton? Gone. James Pazos? Gone. Juan Nicasio? Gone.

It’s Dec. 4, the Winter Meetings aren’t even here yet and Dipoto has shed most of the M’s biggest contracts, most-veteran players and even a couple of youngish, under-control guys. In return he’s picked up a few overpaid vets – and a bunch of prospects, a couple of which cause some baseball people to drool uncontrollably. In other words, Dipoto is rebuilding the roster, the farm system and the fans’ expectations.

Will any of those things bounce back? Not this season. It’s going to be a get-folks-experience year.

Oh sure, Kyle Seager will still man third base. We think. It seems, considering how he’s fallen off the planet the past two year, it would be hard to get anyone to take his contract. So he's the starting third baseman.

Dee Gordon will be at second. Mitch Haniger should be in right field, though he’s a tradeable asset and Dipoto seems to be like a guy in Vegas on a hot streak right now. He is in such a zone he may throw Haniger into a trade without even knowing it.

If Haniger survives, we know he’ll be backing up Marco Gonzales, Mike Leake and Wade LeBlanc as they make starts. Maybe even Felix Hernandez, the franchise’s senior member, will bounce back. There is no chance he will be traded, but the other three guys could be.

You just never know with Jerry and this franchise-changing spree. Stay tuned. There is probably more to come.

Gonzaga: The No. 1 team in the country strengthened its hold on the top spot in this week’s Associated Press basketball poll. Jim Meehan has all the numbers. … Josh Perkins is this week’s WCC Player of the Week. … So is Chandler Smith. Jim Allen has that news within a second look at the Bulldogs’ win over Stanford, which propelled the women into the Associated Press Top 25. … The men have a rivalry game coming up this week. Well, sort of. Washington has been so inept in the series its not much of a rivalry. … Around the WCC, despite some visible votes of confidence recently, BYU’s Dave Rose may need to win some games to stay in his position.

WSU: No, Gardner Minshew is not headed to New York as a Heisman finalist. He didn’t make the cut for the final three, this year’s number of invitees. But he did win the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, an award for the best upperclassmen quarterback. Theo Lawson has stories on both. … The Pac-12 announced its all-academic teams and the Cougars were well represented. Theo runs down those selections. … Theo also explains his AP basketball poll picks. He should. UCLA? C’mon man. (Actually, I agree with his picks but I had to give him a hard time about at least one of them.) … Finally, Theo spoke with Larry Weir about a lot of subjects for the latest Press Box pod.

Elsewhere in the Pac-12, we start with football, a sport in which the conference’s reputation is in tatters, so to speak. It cost WSU and it showed in the attendance and ratings in the title game. … It also showed in how the public reacted to Larry Scott. … The conference announces its awards today. Gardner Minshew seems like a lock as offensive player of the year, but will Kyle Whittingham outpoint Mike Leach as coach of the year? … Colorado is still looking for a coach. … Arizona State will play its bowl game without its best player. … Arizona didn’t make a bowl. That is no surprise. … Ohio State is announcing today former Utah coach Urban Meyer is retiring (again). … Utah faces a familiar-looking foe in the Holiday Bowl. … In basketball, California is helping out the other Bay Area colleges by playing, and in most cases, losing to them.

Seahawks: The Hawks’ playoff chances have improved, but they need to keep winning of course. Yes, there are games with Arizona and the 49ers, but this week’s home battle with Minnesota is important as well, what with the Vikings also vying for a wild-card spot. … The Hawks will be without D.J. Fluker, but get Mychal Kendricks back. … A lot went right against the 49ers.

Mariners: The roster has undergone such a makeover, if I were a free agent, I wouldn’t sign unless I got a percentage of the program sales for the first homestand next season.

•••

• OK, winter isn’t officially here. But the ice on the deck this morning tells me it is unofficially here. Maybe it’s time to pick up the leaves? (Just kidding. Got them last week. Just in the nick of time.) Until later …

There are frequent flyer programs, and there are frequent flyer programs…      Cache   Translate Page
As anyone who knew my husband for more than, oh, 30 seconds, can attest, Jim was a frequent flyer savant. Or obsessive. Or junky. All would apply. And he stuck with it to the end. At one point, when we were meeting with his surgeon maybe 6 months before Jim’s death, Jim went on a major rattle  about how to acquire lots of frequent flyer miles without actually having to fly anywhere. (The magic is all in the credit cards.) He stopped for a breath and I – sitting there with my list of questions – stepped in and said (pleasantly and with humorous tone, even though I was thinking stick a sock in it), “Oh, Chris has better things to do with his time than hear about frequent flyer miles.” Of course, what I was really saying was I have better things to do with my time. Anyway, Chris waved me off and said, “No. This is really interesting.”

When I’m waiting for a doctor and they’re running late, I always remind myself that, if I were the patient, I would want my doctor to spend the extra time with me. Now that I know that the doctor may, in fact, be listening to a patient blab on about frequent flyer miles, I’m not quite as understanding.

Nonetheless, having been (and continue to be) the beneficiary of Jim’s magnificent obsession, I’m grateful for his diligence, which is, among other things, flying me and my sister Trish to Tucson in January, where my sister Kath and her husband will be renting a place in the sun.

Jim accrued miles through a number of programs, but Aeroflot wasn’t one of them.
We never flew Aeroflot.

We would see their planes on the tarmac at Shannon, which was a refueling stop for them. And at 6 a.m. in the Budapest Airport, we sat next to a group of Russian men who downed a liter of vodka while they waited for their Aeroflot flight. We agreed that, if we were flying back to Russia, we would be downing a liter of vodka, too. Instead, we were on Lufthansa heading to Frankfurt.

But if you are an Aeroflot regular, you’d better watch out.

Seems that they recently instituted a new regulation. If you trash talk them on social media, they can take back your frequent flyer miles and cancel your airline-related credit card
Aeroflot’s chief executive, Vitaly Savelev, responded to criticism with these words:
“People who are insulting on social media should understand they have to be held accountable.” (Source: thebell.io via a retweet of Francis Fukuyama by – I think – Michael McFaul. Got that?)
Held accountable? Huh? Something must be lost in translation…
I don’t think that running Aeroflot puts you in quite the same league as the petrogarch/oligarchs. But it’s a pretty big deal.
Historically, the airline was not just the bridge connecting Russia with the West, but also a cover for Russian intelligence — and former employees of the company have told The Bell that the company is still closely tied to the security services. Until 2009, the company was led by the son-in-law of Russia’s former president, Boris Yeltsin and his successor, Savelyev, has known Putin since the mid 1990s. Private airlines have a hard time in Russia and after each bankruptcy Aeroflot picks up the best routes. Since 2014, its market share has grown from 37% to 47%.
Friend of Putin. Well, say no more! What a swell airline Aeroflot is! The fellow who runs it must be a genius!

But I guess having your card canceled and rewards miles revoked is better than getting Skripaled with a nerve agent, or stabbed with a plutonium tipped umbrella. Still, it does seem unduly harsh.

If I do ever fly on Aeroflot, remind me not to blog about it.

New Indiana / Darkness Sunshine      Cache   Translate Page

Review by DJ Away

Cello, acoustic guitar, gentle duet harmonies, lots of reverberant silence. Peaceful, calming. New Indiana is a New York duo that originally met in Tucson in the late nineties. This reminds me a lot of Low (early Low, not the recent stuff) but also the pastoral lilt of Spanish classical music. If you like early Fleet Foxes’ quieter pieces you’ll find a lot to enjoy too. All songs slow unless noted otherwise. Favorites: 2, 3, 5, 7, 13.

1. (3:41)—Plucked cello, stately classical feel. “Media has so much power.”
2. *(2:48)–Loping rhythm. “Can’t see chance / so very hard / nowhere to go / feel so bad for him.”
3. *(4:08)—Melancholy waltz. Simple and fablelike.
4. (2:22)—Mid-tempo, heartbroken folk song. Fleet Foxes fans may like this.
5. *(3:21)—Deep, droplet-like. Reminiscences about frienship.
6. (2:35)—Bobbing waltz, nice guitar harmonies. Lyrics are just “Adam Weintraub, Adam Weintraub.”
7. *(2:45)—Appropriately hazy alt-folk feel, creeping toward mid-tempo. High drifting harmonies.
8. (3:18)—Jaunty mid-tempo piece. Fun, upbeat.
9. (2:23)—Sweet, smooth, optimistic.
10. (4:09)—Starts as lilting groove, changes to a pacing waltz and back.
11. (2:40)—Pleasant waltz. Lyrics about the Grand Canyon and Bernie Sanders.
12. *(1:56)—Very slow, warm. Like a perfect slow pop miniature.
13. (2:25)—Mid-tempo, upbeat. Reminds me of cowboy vocal groups like Sons of the Pioneers, but more sedate.

TUCSON – The click of container lids and swoosh of zippers filled the air on a still morning in Saguaro National Park East. Tom Orum and his wife, Nancy Ferguson, pulled measuring equipment from the trunk of their dusty white truck, parked in a flat landscape of majestic saguaros towering over teddy bear cholla, prickly.

Extinct ‘Denisovan’ people may have lived on Earth’s highest plateau

Near the archaeological site of Nwya Devu on the Tibetan Plateau
Near the archaeological site of Nwya Devu on the Tibetan Plateau
John Olsen
Humans arrived on the Tibetan Plateau tens of thousands of years earlier than we thought. This raises the possibility that the first humans to cope with the harsh conditions there were not modern humans, but the ancient Denisovans.

The Tibetan Plateau is a tough environment. The average annual temperature is close to 0 °C, and on average it’s 4000 metres above sea level so the air is difficult to breathe. Most researchers assumed that humans didn’t move onto the Tibetan Plateau until just 12,000 years ago – and only occupied it permanently about 3600 years ago.

An archaeological site called Nwya Devu suggests otherwise. The site, which is on the Tibetan Plateau 4600 metres above sea level, has yielded thousands of stone tools, albeit few organic remains.
By using technology that establishes how many years have passed since the soil burying the tools was last exposed, archaeologists estimate that the oldest tools are between 40,000 and 30,000 years old. That means humans first occupied the Tibetan Plateau much earlier than we thought.
Some of the artefacts from Nwya Devu
Some of the artefacts from Nwya Devu
Xing Gao
An extraordinary theory might explain how humans adapted to life so high above sea level. Most Tibetans carry an unusual stretch of DNA in their genomes, which they seem to have gained when modern humans bred with an ancient group of humans called the Denisovans. The Denisovan DNA seems to help Tibetans cope with the limited oxygen supply at altitude.

A 2014 study suggested the Denisovan DNA became more common in the ancestors of today’s Tibetans between about 40,000 and 30,000 years ago, again hinting that modern humans were on the Tibetan Plateau by 30,000 years ago.

But there is an alternative scenario, says John Olsen at the University of Arizona in Tucson, a member of the Nwya Devu excavation team. If modern humans harnessed Denisovan DNA to survive at altitude, perhaps the Denisovans could also survive on the Tibetan Plateau. There are no human remains at Nwya Devu and Olsen says attempts to extract human DNA from the sediment have so far failed. But he says the stone tools might be the handiwork of Denisovans, rather than modern humans.

“What we know is that the Denisovans left their homeland in the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia and eventually trekked all the way to Melanesia [the islands northeast of Australia], taking with them their signature genome,” he says. “One logical route for such a migration may have included passage up and over the Tibetan Plateau.”

In line with this, Olsen points out that the stone tools at Nwya Devu are similar to those seen in southern Siberia, where we know the Denisovans lived, and not much like those made by Stone Age humans in China. But without fossil or DNA evidence, Olsen says we can only speculate on the identity of the first Tibetans.

The Crew 2: Update bringt Demolition Derby und PvP-Modus (Spieler-gegen-Spieler)      Cache   Translate Page
