Comment on Comparing China and America, by Fred Reed      Cache   Translate Page
Well, of course, we can hope so – but the collapse of many schools and other public buildings, next to residential buildings that were left standing, strongly suggests corruption, not just “poverty” as the underlying problem.
I doubt China is much more corrupt than other countries with comparable per capita income.
But why would China be decades behind Japan and South Korea? Both of those countries suffered much more intense destruction by war, and South Korea was dirt poor just a few short decades back, just like China. The reason is they have better work-related ethics – not just “work ethics” as in hustle and bustle, but more honesty and focus on quality.
China has been behind Japan since the Meji Restoration in the 1870s. So it will take China the same amount of effort and time to catch up with Japan as with other Western countries. As for South Korea, it has the same population of Shanghai plus Shenzhen. It is relatively easy to build up such a small country. Shanghai and Shenzhen are as prosperous, innovative, and vibrant as any South Korean cities. While South Korea is ahead in semiconductor (for now) and conventional auto industries, China is ahead in super computer, quantum physics and its application, space (e.g. GPS) and missile (e.g. hypersonic glider) technologies, military aviation (e.g. UCAV, 5th gen. fighters and heavy transport, and soon strategic stealth bomber) and ship-building (e.g. nuclear submarine and aircraft carrier), high speed rail and electric vehicles, just naming a few.
But China also has leveraged the size of its market to entice foreign companies to build factories there, and to compel them to hand over their IP (and that is in addition to outright IP theft). And they STILL could not match the South Koreans for speed of development.
The difference is, foreign companies will never transfer, and China will never be able to obtain, the most critical technologies. This was not the case with South Korea and Taiwan. Both got the most critical technologies in the fabrication of semiconductors from the West and became power houses in this industry. Did you see a pattern here? Both are small U.S. protectorates that will never threaten the West.
Amazing (not). Take a moment to compare the scope of “innovation” coming out of China to that coming of Germany when it burst onto the scene in the late 19th and early 20th century, or out of America in its heyday and even today.
In the era of Germany, scientific and technological breakthroughs were relatively easier to achieve compared to today. So it may not be entirely fair to compare it to today's China. As for the U.S., China is catch up.
I wish the Chinese well, and I sincerely hope they will replace the hopelessly corrupt and thuggish U.S. as the leading world power rather sooner than later. I do respect their accomplishments, as far as they go, but they really don’t lead the world in any desirable quality – they are just big, that’s all.
Unlike maybe even 50 years ago, today's research projects often require enormous treasure and brain power, to be big is an absolute advantage.

Gasoline Ingredient Found in Blood Pressure Meds      Cache   Translate Page

Many of the decisions you make each day, including what you eat and drink, how much you exercise and even how you breathe, have a compound effect on your overall health. Making small changes can pay big dividends. The same is true of the small unhealthy decisions you make.

Lifestyle choices also affect your blood pressure and your risk for heart disease and stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),1 nearly 33 percent of American adults have high blood pressure (hypertension) and another 33 percent have prehypertension — blood pressure higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as high blood pressure.

Only half of those with high blood pressure have the condition under control, and hypertension was a primary or contributing cause of death for more than 410,000 Americans in 2014. This is equal to more than 1,100 deaths every day. High blood pressure costs the U.S. $48.6 billion each year in health care services, medications and missed days of work.2

Medications for high blood pressure, also known as antihypertensives, come with a laundry list of side effects. Those side effects are related to how the medication interacts with your body. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently recalled two antihypertensive medications after it was discovered the active ingredient was contaminated with a known human carcinogen.3

Blood Pressure Medication Recalled Due to Toxic Contaminants

The antihypertensive medication Valsartan is commonly used to control hypertension and heart failure. Only after being recalled by 22 other countries due to concerns over the active ingredient, sourced from China,4 the FDA issued a press release5 alerting health care professionals and patients of a voluntary recall.

The FDA estimates nearly 80 percent of active ingredients used in medications in the U.S. originate abroad, the majority of which come from China and India. The first recall in the U.S. occurred in July after the drug was being recalled across Europe following information that an impurity, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), had been identified as part of the manufacturing process.

NDMA was originally produced in the U.S. and used to make rocket fuel. It was discontinued when the chemical was detected in air, water and soil samples and was found to contribute to the development of liver and lung cancer. Consumption is also known to cause severe liver damage accompanied by internal bleeding, and potentially death.

Not all Valsartan products were recalled, only those from Major Pharmaceuticals, Solco Healthcare and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries. After 22 other countries, including Canada and the United Arab Emirates, had recalled the medications did Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, issue a statement saying:6

"We have carefully assessed the valsartan-containing medications sold in the United States, and we've found that the valsartan sold by these specific companies does not meet our safety standards. This is why we've asked these companies to take immediate action to protect patients."

The active ingredient was produced by Standard Chemical and Pharmaceutical Company in Taiwan. A spokesperson for the company commented in the newscast video above, saying, "We are victims too. The active pharmaceutical ingredient came in. We took it and conducted all the required tests."

Antihypertensive Medications Trigger Dangerous Side Effects

A Danish study, in collaboration with Florida State University, found one of the most popular drugs used to treat hypertension, hydrochlorothiazide, raises your risk of skin cancer sevenfold. The findings published in the Journal of the American Association of Dermatology7 demonstrated an association between the medication and squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas.

They looked at other antihypertensive medications but did not find associations between those and skin cancer. The results were based on data from over 80,000 individuals, compared against 1.5 million healthy control subjects. While squamous cell carcinoma has a low mortality rate, the treatments carry a risk of impairment and potential the cancer may spread.

Antihypertensive medications also increase your risk of more common side effects associated with how the medication works in your body or affects other organ systems. Although experts recommend starting any antihypertensive drug at the lowest possible dose and increasing gradually, even at low doses these drugs can trigger:8

Nervousness

Diarrhea

Constipation

Erectile dysfunction

Headache

Nausea

Vomiting

Skin rash

Weight loss or gain

Dizziness

Cough

The usual course of treatment is to begin with one drug and add a second if your blood pressure measurement does not fall to the desired level.9 As with any chemical added to your body, the more you add, the greater the risk you will experience side effects.

Current Hypertension Guidelines and Potential Measurement Inaccuracies

Maintaining your blood pressure within healthy limits is one of the more important methods of reducing your risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Recently, the American Heart Association (AHA) introduced new blood pressure measurements for the diagnosis of hypertension.10

Using this new criteria, it's estimated nearly half of American adults could be diagnosed with hypertension. Previously, readings of 140/90 and above were considered hypertension, but the newest guidelines lower those numbers to 130/80. Using these new guidelines, it's estimated the number of men and women under 45 with hypertension will triple and double respectively.

Health experts from the organizations who formulated the new guidelines, the AHA and the American College of Cardiology, stressed the importance of getting an accurate pressure measurement to ascertain the necessity for medications. It's also important to have at least two elevated readings on two separate occasions before a diagnosis of hypertension is issued.11

Blood pressure measurements in the doctor's office usually measure the pressure of the brachial artery in your upper arm. Central blood pressure (CBP) is considered a better prognostic marker of cardiovascular disease and indicator of the pressure experienced by your organs,12 but requires an invasive procedure.

Inaccuracies are related to several factors, including the size of the cuff, the placement of the cuff, calibration of the machine, body position and activity. Researchers also encourage health care providers to measure blood pressure once in each arm.

A number of studies have revealed a significant difference between your right and left arm pressure may indicate circulatory problems that raise your risk for stroke, peripheral artery disease or other cardiovascular issues.13 For further discussion of how to get the best blood pressure measurement at your doctor's office, see my previous article, "Blood Pressure Testing Is Mostly Inaccurate."

What Triggers a Rise in Blood Pressure?

Knowing what triggers a rise in blood pressure may assist you in determining the lifestyle choices needed to normalize your readings and reduce the risk of conditions linked to hypertension, such as kidney disease, cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. The health problems associated with hypertension have nearly doubled in the past four decades.

As much as 95 percent of high blood pressure is called essential hypertension, meaning the underlying cause is unknown. However, a number of identifiable factors found globally contribute to the rise in blood pressure. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Insulin and leptin resistance. As your insulin and leptin levels rise, it causes your blood pressure to increase.14,15
  • Elevated uric acid levels are also significantly associated with hypertension,16 so any program adopted to address high blood pressure needs to normalize your uric acid level as well.
  • Poor nutrition in childhood has been shown to raise the risk of high blood pressure in adulthood.17
  • Lead exposure18
  • Air pollution affects blood pressure by causing inflammation while noise pollution asserts an effect via your nervous and hormonal systems. Air pollution19 has been shown to increase your risk of high blood pressure to the same degree as having a body mass index of 25 to 30.

Living in an area plagued by constant noise pollution (busy city streets with night time traffic) has also been shown to increase the risk of hypertension.20

Dietary Changes Can Help Normalize Your Blood Pressure

For an in-depth discussion of how blood pressure affects your body, see my previous article, "An Introduction to High Blood Pressure." As noted by Majid Ezzati, Ph.D., a professor of global environmental health at Imperial College London and author of an analysis21 of worldwide data evaluating blood pressure trends:22

"The perception is that people are not getting enough calories, but the reality is, they're not getting healthy calories. Making fresh, healthy food affordable and accessible for everybody should be a priority."

One of the most important dietary changes you can make to affect your blood pressure is to eliminate or dramatically reduce sugar and processed fructose from your diet. The easiest way is to replace processed foods with real, whole foods.

This not only addresses insulin and leptin resistance but also helps reduce elevated uric acid levels, both of which are significant factors in blood pressure. In one study,23 researchers discovered those who consumed 74 grams or more per day of fructose had a 77 percent greater risk of high blood pressure.

It also increased the risk of a reading of 135/85 by 26 percent and a reading of 140/90 by 30 percent, both which fall in the range of hypertension. By checking your fasting insulin level, you can see whether insulin and leptin resistance is at play.

Aim for a fasting insulin level of 2 to 3 microU per mL (mcU/mL). If it's 5 mcU/mL or above you definitely need to lower your insulin level to reduce the risk of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular health problems.

Nitric Oxide Helps Relax Your Arteries and Reduce Blood Pressure

Your body naturally produces nitric oxide to relax your arterial walls. You lose 10 percent of your body's ability to make nitric oxide for every decade of life, which is why it's important to take steps to improve your production as you age.

Beets contain nitrates that are converted into nitric oxide in your body. Raw beets may also boost stamina24 during exercise, and concentrated beet juice has led to improvements in those suffering from heart failure.25

However, they are also high in sugar, which is why I recommend only limited amounts, or eating them in fermented form. Fermenting beets gives you all the health boosting benefits without the concerns of high sugar content. Dark leafy greens or another good source of naturally-occurring nitrates that are converted into nitric oxide in your body.

You can also increase your nitric oxide levels by doing the Nitric Oxide Dump workout two to three times a day. These short bursts of high-intensity activity help release nitric oxide, relax your arterial walls and reduce your blood pressure. For a demonstration, see the video above. You can read more about each of the movements and the benefits in my previous article, "Incorporate the Nitric Oxide Dump."

Image result for headache

Akhirnya saya buat keputusan cek darah. Macam sekarang.... Boleh lihat sini.

Bila dah dapat result hasil check up....saya dapati HB saya rendah. Maka saya dapatkan konsultasi dari Dr Anya.

Selepas doc tanya diet harian saya...baru saya jumpa kelemahan menu harian saya.

No wonder la selalu pening dan sakit kepala.

Saya kerap amik Cinch Tea Shaklee sebab nak energy dan kurus. Rupanya sehari hanya boleh amik sepeket sahaja ok. Saya dah silap la selama ni....

Sejak dari tu saya tukar cara....

Alhamdulillah atas tips dr Anya, HB saya semakin meningkat dan stabil.

Nanti saya share vitamin apa yang membantu saya cepat recover.

Stay tune.

ICERD: Red Indian Pun Ada Haknya Di Amerika -Subky Latif      Cache   Translate Page

Magic Soul Presents V by Kai-Lun Hu - DVD      Cache   Translate Page
Magic Soul Presents V by Kai-Lun Hu - DVD"V", a brain child of Kai-Lun Hu, means the number Five, Variety, and Victory.

That is, Kai-Lun shares with you Five routines, which are Various and will bring you the Victorious experience in magic performing.

Kai-Lun is one of the top magicians in Taiwan, and he's talented in almost every categories of magic, especially in close-up art. From all his creations in the past 20 more years, Kai-Lun handpicked for you these 5 pieces which are highly entertaining, practical, and magical.

Now, let's follow Kai-Lun to his V-land, where seeing is believing!

I - No more box
The no-box version of the classic Dean's Box effect. Equally amazing but with less props!

II - Co-in Box
The magician throws the playing cards away? With the empty card box, it's show time for the coins, an extravaganza of vanishing and reappearing. However, the playing cards won't be away quietly...What's next?

III - Kai-Lun Roulette
Undistinguishable envelops with bills, only one of them has the real money. Will the real money survive from the heartless Scissorhands? The suspenseful Kai-Lun Roulette.

IV - Bookmark
The probability to predict a selected card from a full deck is at most 1/52, and it's like looking for a needle in a haystack to predict a random phrase selected from a random book by a random audience. "Bookmark" provides a simple and straightforward way for you to challenge the impossible prediction.

V - Holely Monte
The signature of the audience on a card with a punched hole disappeared. Then the hole also disappeared in the blink of an eye. The signed holey card mysteriously re-forms in the envelop put on the table in the beginning. Kai-Lun gives a new touch to the classic 3 Card Monte routine.

Bonus:
Phantom
A super hilarious routine for parlor shows. The magician travels through the space like a phantom. The person on the stage is AMAZED, while the audiences are AMUSED.

Reviews:
"When I performed "PHANTOM" to the magicians from all over the world in Italy, everyone went crazy! If only I could have said, "this is my idea!"." - Lu Chen

The Kunsthalle Wien Prize 2018 goes to two artists who hail from a cultural sphere that has been riven by a sharp political divide since the end of the Chinese Civil war in 1949: from the People’s Republic of China and the island nation of Taiwan (officially known as the “Republic of China”). The two honorees agreed on the title Keep me close to you for their diverse explorations of current as well as historic forms of the transmission of immaterial goods across both countries’ respective political and ideological boundaries. Ting-Jung Chen’s audio installation You Are the Only One I Care About (whisper) conveys a vivid impression of a peculiar phenomenon spawned by propaganda strategies between the poles of projection and appropriation: the artist has reimagined the enormous “broadcast walls” that both socialist and capitalist countries

Comment on Nicaragua Canal Project Dealt New Blow by Duncan Craig      Cache   Translate Page
George is absolutely correct. Read Andre Gunder Franks "Re-Orient" which won the Booker Prize. Getting back to the canal, it was never intended to be built, but was an operation of the Chinese government. Look what transpired shortly after the 'groundbreaking' of the Nicaraguan canal. Panama withdrew its recognition of Taiwan, and entered into favored nation agreements with mainland China. Then Wang Jiang became hard to find and his offices closed. The Nicaraguan canal ceased. These events didn't occur on a geopolitical vacuum.

Comment on Downer’s unfortunate Pacific legacy by Vailala      Cache   Translate Page
Thank you Stephen for an interesting blog-post. I think that there is much to be commended in what you say here. The idea of ‘good governance’ in the context of aid and development has always been somewhat unanchored, lacking a measure of its applicatory relevance. Broadly speaking the institutional focus of the ‘good governance’ concept has been based on an identification of the institutions which are assumed to be supportive of the Pareto-efficient allocation of resources as found in the advanced economies, especially that of the USA. One example of this line of thought in the development context is this World Bank paper discussing the minimal role of labor market contracting among African farmers. The authors assume that because the idealised (market-driven hire and fire) model is not realised in African family-based subsistence farming practice the developmental remedy to the situation is ‘institutional strengthening’ of a ‘good governance’ character - that the institutional and legal framework of labor contract law be improved, thereby bringing actual practices into better alignment with the idealised economic model. You are correct when you describe the Chinese approach to infrastructure development and aid as pragmatic. To understand Chinese pragmatism I think it useful to examine Chinese analysis of the China transformation and the extent to which Chinese analysts see relevance in the China experience to the development issues and problems of low-income countries. In addition to the writings of Wen Tiejun and his associates the analysis of Yi Wen is instructive. Yi Wen proposes a multi-stage model of development with interesting features, including non-linearity. Among the topics Yi Wen discusses is the role of corruption and political patron-clientelism during the early stages of the economic and political transformation process. Yi Wen makes the important point that the elimination of corruption can only be a late development stage issue (as in the UK and USA) because comprehensive political/legal control of corruption carries a very high transaction cost that an early stage developing state simply cannot afford. The implication that ‘corruption’ and ‘clientelism’ is a necessary feature of early development stages is left open. To a considerable extent Yi Wen’s discussion of China’s development mirrors the discussion that took place in the late soviet period among Russian economists. This discussion concerned the ‘system-forming character of capitalism’ in the economies of Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Lao and Japan (see N.A. Simoniya and V. Sheinis). The discussion focused on the diverse ‘multistructurality’ characteristic of low-income countries. That there isn’t a single path, runway and take off to development is also underscored by the Korean economist Keun Lee. Here is a topology-based path analysis that can be contrasted with the standard linear regression analysis found in neoclassical economics. China’s BRI (and the AIIB) will enable the Pacific Island countries to achieve at least some of their development goals, as they choose to conceptualise them and in accordance with their political and fiscal capabilities and capacities.           Gay Dating Apps Weigh In On Grindr CEO's Marriage Equality Debacle      Cache   Translate Page

Last week, the blog INTO, which is owned by Grindr, wrote that Chen had shared an article on his Facebook regarding Cher Wang, the CEO of HTC, who apparently supported anti-LGBTQ organizations in the recent public referendum on same-sex marriage in Taiwan.

Responding to commenters on the post, Chen apparently wrote, in part, “There are people who believe that marriage is a holy matrimony between a man and a woman.”

Many folks took his comment that “marriage is a holy matrimony between a man and a woman” as being anti-marriage equality.

INTO updated its report when Chen later issued a statement saying, in part, “The words I chose related to marriage between a man and a woman were meant to express my personal feelings about my own marriage to my wife – not to suggest that I am opposed to marriage equality.”

He went on to say that he has long considered himself “an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.”

“ I support gay marriage and I am proud that I can work for Grindr,” he added. “I apologize that my words did not clearly convey these feelings.”

Now, other gay dating app companies are chiming in on the subject.

CEO and co-founder of SCRUFF, Eric Silverberg, posted a video message expressing his concern that comments from the leaders of gay-centric businesses can have the power to set LGBTQ progress back in terms of equal rights and representation.

He began his message by stating up front that he is “unequivocally in favor of gay marriage.”

“When leaders in the gay community say these things, they disrespect the decades long work of marriage equality activists and give credibility to far-right politicians who are trying to roll back these rights.”

Silverberg also urged tech leaders to understand and further the moral agenda of the communities they serve.

“Let’s move our swipes and ‘likes’ to online communities led by people who stand behind their beliefs and actions, and who have a moral intuition that reflects our community,” he said in closing.

And dating app Jack’d posted a short video response via Instagram which shows Grindr’s recently announced ‘Kindr’ campaign, but it’s quickly overwhelmed by screen shots of the Chen/Grindr story.

Jack'd ends the message with the words “Love is Love.” Watch below.

La MaMa Announces THE SHELL-SHOCKED NUT      Cache   Translate Page

From December 20 to 23, La MaMa Experimental Theater in association the GOH Productions will present the fourth annual production of East Village Dance Project's The Shell-Shocked Nut, an alternative Nutcracker set in the East Village, featuring an intergenerational cast of dancers and musicians. The piece is recommended for family audiences.

In this unconventional take on the seasonal staple, a wandering child and a war veteran suffering from PTSD take a magical voyage through the East Village. The pair of characters visit Tompkins Square Park, Economy Candy Store, Saint Mark's Place, and other iconic East Village landmarks while exploring themes of loss and recovery.

The New York Times said of the Shell-Shocked Nut, "The East Village has a "Nutcracker" of its own and, fittingly, it's on the gritty side." Time Out NY chose the production as a "Critics' Pick".

The Shell-Shocked Nut is conceived and directed by Martha Tornay and co-directed by Victoria Roberts-Wierzbowski. The pair also spearhead East Village Dance Project (EVDP), a dance development program that has offered after-school classes in ballet, modern and choreography in lower Manhattan since 1997.

The show first emerged as a studio showing in the weeks after Superstorm Sandy created as a means of brightening spirits after a challenging time for the community. "I started thinking about the cathartic process of working through a stressful situation," Tornay said.

The sister and daughter of war veterans, Tornay was inspired to use the structure of the Nutcracker to tell a more personal story of the effects of trauma, while maintaining the accessible, family-friendly nature of the traditional ballet.

In the years following its inception, the piece has grown to a full-scale production, featuring young students from the dance program alongside an array of professional performers, artists and guest choreographers from NYC and beyond. The 2018 Guest Artists include the New Mexico-based Aerial group, Project in Motion; Detroit-based dance artists Shaina and Bryan Baira; and New York City performers Delaney McDonough, Indah Walsh, Chloe London, Xiao Quan, Lauren Kravitz, Ellen Maynard and OBIE-winning scenic designer Donald Eastman.

Local composer Clare Farris created original pieces for the show, based off the Tchaikovsky score. The show also includes sections of Tchaikovsky in its unadulterated state, Massachusetts-based musician/composer Peter Jones, and contemporary tracks by Duke Ellington, David Lowery, Lynn Anderson, Aretha Franklin and more.

The Shell-Shocked Nut will run from Dec. 20-23, Thurs to Sat at 7PM; Sunday at 3PM. Tickets are $20 and $15 seniors, students and children 12 and under, and can be purchased online at lamama.org or at the Box Office: (212) 352-3101

FUNDING: The East Village Dance Project and this project are supported, in part with public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts; and with support from private donors.

GOH Productions' mission is embodied in our logo, GOH, the Japanese character meaning "working together under one roof." That definition informs all the organization's work - collaborative and expansive, stretching the sky to its fullest capacity. GOH began in 1979, during a time of fiscal cutbacks and political turmoil; and faces, head-on, the challenges of nurturing artworks and artistic collaboration, testing the boundaries and borders of all categories. GOH has a primary goal of working with experimental and interdisciplinary artists to clarify their artistic vision and to make possible the production of new works in a variety of genres and in a variety of global landscapes. In the mid-1970s, GOH was founded as 7 Loaves, Inc. a non-profit arts producing and presenting organization in the Lower East Side/East Village of New York City. In 1988 the organization's name was changed to GOH Productions (GOH), and Bonnie Sue Stein became its Artistic and Executive Director, a position she still holds. Stein works with directly with a number of performing artists on the creation and development of collaborative projects in the U.S. and with international partners.

La MaMa is dedicated to the artist and all aspects of the theatre. La MaMa's vision of nurturing new artists and new work remains as strong today as it was when Ellen Stewart first opened the doors in 1961. La MaMa has presented more than 5,000 productions by 150,000 artists of all nations, cultures, races, and identities. Cultural pluralism and ethnic diversity are inherent in the work created on our stages.           Taiwan Expected to Adjust Its Hands-Off Stance Toward China after Elections      Cache   Translate Page
Taiwan is expected to adjust its largely hands-off stance toward political rival China by 2020, following losses for the ruling party in local elections last month, while still holding a middle ground between independence and unification.  The government of President Tsai Ing-wen may take a slightly more accommodating stance toward China, some analysts believe, possibly by focusing on economic relations over politics. Conversely, some say, the government could swing further toward Washington to resist China. Tsai faces pressure to do something palpable before the Taiwan presidential race of 2020. China claims sovereignty over Taiwan, but the island is self-ruled and 83 percent of Taiwanese like it that way, according to government figures. Tsai, elected in 2016, rejects Beijing’s dialogue condition that both sides see themselves as part of a single China, and Beijing responded by cutting off talks. “For the next stage, ahead of the presidential election, I think the roles of Beijing and Washington will be stronger than before, therefore whether it’s the Democratic Progressive Party or President Tsai, it’s required that you make some policy adjustments,” said Andy Chang, China studies professor at Tamkang University in Taiwan. Decisions in Taipei can quickly thaw or chill China-Taiwan relations, which have raised military tension multiple times over the past seven decades. Unhappy with Tsai, the globally powerful Chinese government periodically flies military aircraft near Taiwan and squelches Taiwanese foreign diplomacy. The two sides have been separately ruled since the Chinese civil war of the 1940s, when the losing Nationalists fled to Taiwan and rebased their government. Voters link China, economy Elections of mayors and county magistrates in Taiwan November 24 had little to do with China policy, Tsai said last week. But some voters equate today’s China-Taiwan stalemate with dips in local tourism and trouble exporting agricultural products. A China-Taiwan dialogue could produce agreements that open Taiwan further to the $12 trillion-plus Chinese economy. Election results handed 15 of Taiwan’s 22 top local seats to candidates from the opposition Nationalist Party, which today advocates closer China relations including a resumption of the dialogue that its government carried out before 2016. Tsai will stick to her overall China stance, despite elections, because she has sunk so much time already into straddling the line between keeping distance from Beijing without declaring formal independence, scholars believe. Independence would be a red line for China. Tsai is eligible for reelection in 2020, likely against an opposition candidate who openly backs stronger China ties. “If Tsai makes a change, then her most basic currency is gone,” said Huang Kwei-bo, vice dean of the international affairs college at National Chengchi University in Taipei.  Economic cooperation Ruling party mayors and magistrates have expressed willingness to work with the new Nationalist mayor of the southern city Kaohsiung on developing local tourism for people from China. On Tuesday, the domestic China Times website quoted Taiwan’s chief China policymaker stressing local economic development and “a bit less discussion of politics.” Those moves may herald a “softened tone” toward Beijing’s dialogue condition, said Lin Chong-pin, a retired strategic studies professor in Taiwan. Kinder language may follow, he said. “(It’s) probably a softened tone toward the one-China policy or Taiwanese sovereignty, whatever,” Lin said. “There are many ways of going around. She could express openness toward a one future China or a one historic cultural China.” Resisting Beijing via Washington Decisions in Washington and Beijing will inevitably affect China policy in Taipei, Chang said. China, for example, rolled out a list of relaxed rules earlier this year to lure Taiwanese over for work and study. The U.S. government periodically offers arms sales and sends high-level officials to Taipei. Taiwanese generally prefer a “pro-U.S.” policy over a “pro-China” one, Chang said, and that view will establish direction for Tsai. Taiwan-U.S. relations have leapt ahead this year with supportive legislation in Washington and occasional passage of U.S. navy ships near the island. China disapproves but has taken little counter-action as it struggles with Washington over trade. Leaders in Taipei will reference public opinion to chart any new China policy, said Chiu Chui-cheng, deputy minister with the government’s Mainland Affairs Council. “The government will respect the ideas and suggestions from all circles and do reviews on a rolling basis to enforce related Taiwan-mainland China ties, together maintaining the status quo of peace in the Taiwan Strait,” Chiu said.  China may give Taiwan a break from the diplomatic and military pressure of the past two years as it waits for Tsai to take stock of the November elections, Huang said.

Apple's stock woes are bleeding into its global supply chain.

Shares of iPhone suppliers tumbled on Wednesday after Apple's stock tumbled 4.4% on Tuesday — outpacing a particularly brutal 3.8% drop in the Nasdaq. Apple stock was hurt in part Tuesday by a downgrade by HSBC, which cited an overwhelming dependence on a single product, the iPhone.

"What has made the success of Apple, a concentrated portfolio of highly desirable (and pricey) products, is now facing the reality of market saturation," HSBC said.

Here's a round-up of the damage in Apple's suppliers in Asia:

  • Pegatron, in Taiwan, fell 1.7%
  • The Chinese acoustics technology supplier AAC Technologies lost 3.7%
  • Taiwan's Flexium Interconnect was down 3.9%
  • Taiwan's Largan Precision declined 3.7%

In the US, Lumentum Holdings, an optical products manufacturer, fell 5.5% in regular trading on Tuesday after it cut its outlook last month.

Cirrus Logic closed down 1.9% down — having fallen as much as 5.8% days after it cut its December revenue outlook because of recent weakness in the smartphone market. Apple accounts for about 82% of Cirrus' sales.

Similarly, Qorvo, a North Carolina semiconductor company, dropped 5.3% on Tuesday amid concerns about Apple, which recently lost its status as the world's most valuable business.

Another Apple supplier, Broadcom, which reports earnings on Thursday, fell 4.1%. The company, which designs semiconductors, is believed to make about $10 on each iPhone sold, according to JPMorgan, cited by CNBC.

Other manufacturers, such as Austria's AMS, which develops facial-recognition software, cut its revenue forecast last month as iPhone sales diminished.

India is third largest contributor to Zenith’s 3-year global adex prediction      Cache   Translate Page

MUMBAI: Zenith has predicted that the global ad expenditure will grow 4.5 per cent in 2018, reaching $581 billion by the end of the year. For the coming years, the agency expects the advertising expenditure to grow behind the global economy and its forecast has mentioned 4 per cent growth for 2019, followed by 4.2 per cent in 2020 and 4.1 per cent in 2021.

The forecast for 2019 is slightly down from its September prediction of 4.2 per cent growth.

The report has indicated that regions in ‘Fast-track Asia’ (India, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam) are expecting the growth to rise to an average of 6.2 per cent a year to 2021.

India has been ranked third (followed by USA and China) in the list of top ten contributors to ad-spend growth 2018-2021 and is expected to see $4,506 million in ad-spends, which is 6 per cent of the expected total global advertising expenditure

North American ad-spend will grow 3 per cent in 2019 and will show an average 3.4 per cent growth each year to 2021 as the “ad market has been growing fairly steadily but unspectacularly since 2010”. Latin America is expected to record an average growth rate of 4.1 per cent a year to 2021. Combining “large scale and rapid growth” China will contribute 19 per cent to the global growth rate and will spend $14,461 million for advertisements.

The forecast has further revealed that six of the ten largest contributors will be rising markets (China, India, Indonesia, Brazil,  South Korea and Russia), and they will contribute 37 per cent of new ad-spend over the next three years.

Minerva Project draws notice for its practical, rigorous curriculum and student learning results      Cache   Translate Page

Much of the attention the Minerva Project received around its much-watched launch in 2012 focused on the start-up’s lofty goal of creating an elite “Ivy League 2.0” university, with top traditional-age students doing immersive stints at campus locations around the world while also taking online courses.

But Minerva’s biggest success so far is its curriculum, which the university describes as a systematic rethinking of the liberal arts. The nonbuzzy approach hearkens back to higher education’s roots with a focus on practical, vocational knowledge, and is drawing attention from both traditional academics and would-be disrupters.

“They’re focused on the learning outcomes that we feel are most critical,” said Lynn Pasquerella, president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

Pasquerella praised Minerva’s highly structured curriculum and its emphasis on project-based, hands-on learning, which ensures that assignments become more challenging at each step.

“It’s applicable to all institutions and should be adopted,” said Pasquerella, former president of Mount Holyoke College. “Their results are impressive.”

Minerva has numbers to back up the praise.

In fall 2016, first-year students at the Minerva Schools at KGI took the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA+). The test is a standardized measure of students’ performance in analysis, problem solving, scientific and quantitative reasoning, critical reading and evaluation, and critiquing an argument. While the CLA+ is controversial in some circles, it’s perhaps the most respected assessment of collegiate-level learning.

A previous iteration of the test was used famously for the research that underpinned the 2011 book Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses (University of Chicago Press). The high-profile book found that 45 percent of college students showed no significant learning gains after two years of college.

Minerva’s incoming class in 2016 performed in the 95th percentile on the CLA+ compared to their peers at other colleges. That wasn’t particularly surprising, the university acknowledged, given its admissions rate of just 1.2 percent, which is more selective than Ivy League universities.

However, Minerva gave the same group of students the CLA+ eight months later. They performed in the 99th percentile compared to seniors at other institutions. The university ranked first among all institutions that administered the test.

“They did well, very well,” said Roger Benjamin, president and CEO of the Council for Aid to Education, the creator of the CLA+. The assessment's strength, many have said, is that it attempts to measure the "value add" of a college education, which has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years.

The curriculum and pedagogical approach are behind the high-flying scores, Minerva’s leaders said. The university bans lectures and requires that students be actively engaged at least three-quarters of the time while in their seminar classes, meaning that they must participate rather than passively listen to an instructor. By incorporating the science of learning across the curriculum, Minerva strives to improve how its students think before they move on to the specific subject matter most colleges emphasize.

“A lot of universities are coming to touch Minerva to see if it’s real,” said Ben Nelson, the founder, chairman and CEO of the Minerva Project.

Global University, Global Curriculum

Minerva wants to export its learning model to other universities, particularly for honors programs or for newer, hungry institutions that aren’t bogged down by traditional thinking.

“We are the only university who tells you how to do it, in a box,” said Nelson. “This is our focus. Our goal is to enable structural, broad-based higher education reform.”

One of Minerva’s first big gets was the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, a prestigious research institution. The university in April partnered with Minerva to allow its students to take Minerva’s four “cornerstone” courses, which focus on foundational critical thinking, during their first two years of study. In exchange, Minerva’s fourth-year students will have the option of spending part of their final year taking classes and conducting research at HKUST.

Minerva features two divisions. The for-profit Minerva Project, based in San Francisco, provides technological and other supports to the nonprofit side, the Minerva Schools at KGI, as well as to other institutions. The university division’s name refers to its unusual partnership with the Keck Graduate Institute, a nonprofit graduate university that Minerva teamed up with in 2014 to gain approval from a regional accreditor for its degree programs. Keck is part of the Claremont Colleges consortium, which includes highly selective, traditional liberal arts colleges.

The corporate side of Minerva has substantial revenue potential, experts said, from working with other universities to help them adapt versions of its curriculum or to use Minerva’s online learning technology.

Even so, Minerva isn’t particularly protective of its curricular approach. Nelson and Stephen M. Kosslyn, Minerva’s founding dean and chief academic officer, last year published a book, Building the Intentional University: Minerva and the Future of Higher Education (MIT Press), that they edited on the “blueprint” for the curriculum. (Kosslyn, a high-profile hire who previously worked at Harvard and Stanford Universities and helped develop Minerva, left earlier this year to create Foundry College, which is aimed at adult students.)

“Universities owe it to themselves to try it,” Nelson said.

Pasquerella agreed. While pockets of experimentation with serious curricular revamps can be found across higher education in the U.S., Pasquerella said Minerva’s approach likely will be most appealing in countries like South Korea, which are rapidly adding to their research university capacity.

“There’s a huge interest in applied liberal learning,” she said.

Nelson still has plenty of goals for the Minerva Schools at KGI, which now enrolls 600 undergraduates but has a target enrollment of 10,000 by 2025.

Students at Minerva pay $13,450 in annual tuition, with a total estimated cost of $30,950 per year. That total includes housing in Minerva’s seven residential locations. Undergraduates begin with eight months in San Francisco and then spend semesters in Buenos Aires; London; Berlin; Hyderabad, India; Taipei, Taiwan; and Seoul, South Korea.

Minerva also this fall launched its first graduate program, a master’s degree in decision analysis, with part-time and full-time options. The degree program focuses on “systematic thinking tools,” Nelson said. “That’s what we’re really good at.”

Despite its relative success so far at creating a legitimately groundbreaking university, Minerva faces challenges at getting to scale. The business model is tricky, not least of which because of the high cost of creating residential student living options in expensive global cities.

But it seems like a safe bet that Minerva’s curriculum will have a broad impact. And Nelson tends to think big.

“Our ambition is to change higher education all over the world,” Nelson said. “This is something anybody should be using.”

The 6th Anilao Underwater Shootout      Cache   Translate Page

Underwater photography has always been an awesome niche that I haven’t touched on because for starters, the equipment you need to take shots underwater come at a pretty hefty price and two, I can’t swim. I am a bit sad because our country has the most diverse underwater subjects, creatures, wrecks and just about any fish there is in the ocean and to be in the midst of all these things and not see them at the same time, is just a whole lot of frustration for me. Good thing some of the most amazing photographers from around the world are converging in Mabini Batangas for the 6th Edition of the Anilao Underwater Shootout. This is a competition organized by the Department of Tourism in cooperation with the Local Goverment of Mabini Batangas and the Resort Owners Association of Mabini (ROAM).

Mind you last year they have had 175 participants from 17 different countries like Singapore, China, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, Turkey, Portugal, USA, Switzerland, Germany, Hong Kong, France, Australia, Canada and the Philippines. It was won by Lilian Koh a female photograper from Singapore (Open Class Champion) and PJ Aristorenas from the Philippines who got his Macro shot of a skeleton shrimp win first place.

The prize is not a joke. They’ve got 40,000 US dollars worth of dive packages, diving and photography equipment, gears and accessories. This is part of the reason why they have exceeded the number of participants this year. It’s like the Grand Prix of underwater photography, running from November 28 til December 1, 2018. They had to go through hundreds of photos to choose the champion this year, and boy they didn’t disappoint!

Asec Roberto Alabado III says “For this competition it will showcase our country, our dive spots, as a sustainable tourism destination. Last year, we had about 12% our GDP contributed to tourism. For this year we have 241 participants who come from 24 countries so this is like a mini UN scene you’re seeing.”

Check out the highlights of my trip and the event here!

The judges include John Thet, Ellen Cuylaerts, William Tan, Indra Swari and famed underwater genius Laurent Ballesta. They look at the manner people dive, the quality of the photos, to show the beauty of the animal, to showcase the beauty of Anilao. The judges even said they wanted to learn because the standard here is high. The silent rule is, a right photo is better than a good photo so there will be almost no photo manipulation as we have to be strict about it. True enough there were amazing, it has to be different, to wow, not just taking photographs. A lot of these photographers were inspired so they all came out with beautiful photos. They are all shot naturally, stunning even in their own environment. Every year the competition is getting tougher and the photographers are getting even more skilled, but they never forget nature. The support coming from the resorts are all making this successful because even with that increase of contestants, they still were able to accommodate it. The Department of Tourism is planning to duplicate this in other provinces because this one is successful, so I am really excited about the other emerging sites like Leyte, Dumaguete, and other provinces.

Ellen Cuylaerts says “I was blown away by the diversity, I go from one place to another and say wow again just in Anilao. Everybody works together in making sure this is sustainable, I am glad I am excited until now for you to see what they got from just one place.”

Willam Tan adds “I just arrived yesterday and I dived once and I have seen a lot of creatures that I have never seen before, even if this isn’t my first time, I would be happy to go back!”

Now that it has been a very successful installment this 2018, they have no where to go but up! I am also excited about what the DOT and Dive Philippines has planned for the other parts of the country that have not yet been developed as a diving destination. We really have so much promise, and their people are exemplary in hosting this event, the whole DOT and local government wants this same successful hosting to be replicated in other provinces so they too could be dive havens like Anilao. Make it happen, make it happen real soon!

Thank you so much Dive Philippines and Department of Tourism! This was so much fun for photography people like me, the prizes and the experience is just amazing! Hope to see you next year!

Knowledge and accessibility barriers stand in Fintech’s way: LINE research      Cache   Translate Page

New research from LINE Corporation has revealed that consumers in Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia are among the most ready in the world to embrace a cash-free future.

The situation is different in Japan and other markets surveyed, where consumers are taking more of a wait-and-see approach, despite acknowledging the appeal of certain FinTech products.

The survey explored attitudes towards trust in financial technology (Fintech) through a survey of 5,000 smartphone users in seven key markets. The survey looked at consumers in LINE’s four major markets of Japan, Thailand, Taiwan and Indonesia, plus Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

High trust

Across the seven markets, 64% of respondents agreed that financial technology makes planning and managing their finances easier. Trust in financial technology was generally found to be high, with 63% of survey respondents saying they trust the products and services they are currently aware of and a further 30% feeling ambivalent towards them. Trust also appears to increase with youth, with only 55% of those aged 55 and over trusting Fintech, compared with 69% of 18-34s, indicating greater upside potential for Fintech with younger age groups.

However, in all markets surveyed, respondents’ knowledge of the financial technology related services and products currently available to them was relatively low, with less than half considering themselves knowledgeable in this area (44%), rising to 52% among younger audiences (those in the 18-34 age bracket).

Of those products and services that respondents would be most willing to use a mobile or app-based service to access, savings accounts (65%), money/wire transfers (57%), current accounts (48%) and insurance (48%) were the most popular options given. Life insurance (65%), travel insurance (58%) and home insurance (50%) were selected the top types of insurance respondents wanted to access in this way.

Regions vary widely in Fintech readiness

While respondents in each market had different interests and concerns, Thailand, Taiwan and Indonesia all stood out as being particularly interested in a digital financial future. When asked about the prospect of their market becoming “cash-free”, all three answered well above the survey average of 37%: In Thailand, 57% of respondents said they were “excited” about going cash-free, followed by Indonesia at 56% and Taiwan at 52%. Korea also answered positively, at 45%.

Those markets also responded more positively to purchasing financial products through a mobile-based service. While overall 65% of survey respondents would open a savings account over a mobile app, Thailand led with 83%, then Indonesia at 77% and Taiwan at 69% (Korea also did well, at 75%).

In contrast, respondents in the UK, US and Japan were less eager to stray from traditional methods. Only a small percentage of respondents reported being excited about becoming “cash-free”, with Japan at 24%, the US at 20% and the UK last among the surveyed markets at 19%.

Japan in particular remains behind most developed nations when it comes to cashless payments, but as the government tries to move the country away from its dependence on cash, this is an area with much potential for growth.

The UK, US and Japan were also behind the survey averages for being willing to use mobile to buy Fintech services. Japan had the lowest percentage of respondents say they would be willing to open a savings account, at 49%, then the US at 53% and the UK at 57% (survey average 65%). For making investments over mobile, however, the UK was last at 28%, followed by the US and Japan at 37%, closer to the survey average of 45%.

Japan unhappy with present options, but lacks awareness on new choices

Compared to Thailand, Indonesia and Taiwan, Japan finished last by far among the surveyed markets in terms of trusting and understanding Fintech. Just 38% of respondents saying they trusted Fintech, versus a survey average of 63%. Only 22% reported being knowledgeable of Fintech, versus an average of 44%.

Japanese respondents were the most likely to currently do their banking in person (80%, versus a survey average of 68%) and least likely to use a mobile device to do so (38%, versus 58%). But Japan also finished last by far in terms of how convenient people found current financial services (31%, versus 67%), indicating consumers are ready for change.

Marketing in 2019: Look beyond impressions and click-throughs, says Criteo      Cache   Translate Page

With 2019 just around the corner, what are some ways that marketers can evolve and fine-tune their strategies in the year ahead? Alban Villani, the managing director of Criteo in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, has three tips for readers of CMO Innovation.

Combine your offline and online data

Data integration is no longer a good-to-have, but a priority for brands who want to succeed in the year ahead, according to Villani. Data is key to delivering an exceptional customer experience but serves as the foundation to give marketers the unified view that they need to keep a close eye on the customer journey.

“Since mobile shoppers browse and purchase across devices and channels, skillfully navigating between online and offline channels, it’s imperative for the bottom line that brands and marketers’ access and examine customer data from the point where they start browsing, to actual purchase and payment,” he said.

Look to customer lifetime value

And far from being fixated at legacy metrics such as impressions and click-through rates that are fast becoming outdated, marketers should evolve their measurement metrics with Customer Lifetime Value (CLV), says Villani.

CLV is used to denote the total value a customer brings to a retailer’s business throughout their lifetime, and offers a more holistic, insight-led approach. Increasing customer retention and brand loyalty are two other benefits of monitoring CLV.

Brands should not stop at owned data when it comes to measuring the CLV either but seek expand their data pool by collaborating through anonymized data assets to bring in additional incremental value for their business: “By partnering with a strong advertising platform for CLV analysis, marketers can reconcile customer identities across anonymous and known data sources.”

Keep an eye on upcoming technologies

Finally, marketers can expect artificial intelligence (AI) to continue disrupting the retail industry, as hyper-connected customers continue to demand and expect relevant advertisements that speak to them, he says.

“This forces marketers to rethink their customer engagement approach by investing in automation and machine learning technologies that deliver personalized experiences. Applying these new technologies in the back-end will unearth deeper insights that match customer browsing and purchasing behaviors at unprecedented rate,” he said.

“AI will touch every aspect of customer engagement and drive a new wave of business efficiency,” he summed up.

Razer Blade Stealth updated with a refreshed design, 4K screen, and Windows Hell ...      Cache   Translate Page

Razer is updating one of its most recognizable laptops, the 13.3-inch Blade Stealth, with a new chassis and specs. The updated Blade Stealth can be configured as a full HD, battery-conscious laptop or a 4K touchscreen machine with discrete graphics. Ultimately, this is going to be Razer’s most portable and affordable laptop, putting it in direct competition with machines from Apple and Dell.

The big deal with the Stealth’s fall refresh is its changing footprint. At first glance, I thought the new Blade Stealth was smaller than the previous generation, until I placed them side by side. In reality, the 2.82-pound laptop is actually four-tenths of an inch thicker, with thinner 4.9mm bezels flanking the screen (which are 60 percent thinner than the last gen’s) that make it appear to have a smaller footprint. It also has a smaller power brick for charging over USB-C.

Razer revamped the Stealth’s speaker setup, with four Dolby Atmos tuned speakers (two more than before) on both sides of the keyboard. There’s also a larger windows Precision Touchpad than before, complete with native gesture support.

You might be getting slightly more for your money this year, too: the new Blade Stealth starts with a quad-core processor, but with the same $1,399 starting price. Previously, you’d only get two cores, and $1,499 would get you a quad-core chip.

The new Blade Stealth has an Intel Core i7-8565U quad-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz (Turbo Boost to 4.6GHz), Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics, 8GB RAM, a 1080p matte screen (with 100 percent sRGB coverage), and a slower 256GB SATA SSD.

If that’s not enough power, you can upgrade the Blade Stealth laptop to a 4K glossy touchscreen, a new 25-watt version of Nvidia’s MX150 discrete graphics chip that Razer claims is fast enough to play League or Fortnite (on lower settings) at 1080p or 4K, 16GB RAM, and a faster 512GB PCIe solid state drive. These upgrades push the Stealth’s price tag up to the $1,899 mark.

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

On its own, the Stealth isn’t a gaming laptop (even with the MX150 chip), but both models still have eGPU support. That’ll allow you to use an enclosure like Razer’s own Core dock to attach a desktop-class GPU over a Thunderbolt 3 connection, with four PCIe lanes capable of 40GBps data transfers.

Razer hasn’t retained the individual Chroma key backlighting we’ve seen in the advanced Blade 15 and the last-gen Stealth. Instead, Razer swapped it for the single-zone layout in the base Blade 15 in order to conserve battery life, which company reps claim is “up to 13 hours” on the base 1080p Stealth, or three hours more than previously claimed with the last-gen Stealth. We’ll see how that pans out when we review the new Stealth in the coming weeks.

Razer Blade Stealth updated with a refreshed design, 4K screen, and Windows Hell ...

The new Blade Stealth in matte FHD (left) and glossy 4K (right) screen configurations.

Another new hardware addition is the IR camera mounted at the top of the display that allows you to log in to the Blade Stealth using Windows Hello facial recognition. It’s been a heavily requested feature of mine on previous Blade laptops, so it’s great to see facial recognition finally making an appearance in their lineup.

The new Razer Blade Stealth launches today, starting at $1,399 fromRazer.com and select retailers in the US and Canada. It’s also coming soon to retailers in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, China, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan.

Like a reverse Mayflower covered in hairspray, RuPaul’s Drag Race is coming to the UK. BBC Three and World of Wonder announced on Wednesday that the groundbreaking, Emmy-winning reality competition will be adapted for British television with RuPaul hosting, although hopefully not doing an accent.

“It is a dream come true to extend our royal family to the United Kingdom with our partners at BBC Three,” RuPaul said in a statement. “I am beyond excited to celebrate the massive charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent of the Queen’s queens. And before anyone asks, yes, we would be thrilled to have Meghan Markle join us, as we are already preparing a ‘Royal-Mother-To-Be’ runway challenge.”

Like America, the UK has drag roots deeply embedded in its culture, intricately woven into to the country’s punk history. “Drag in the UK is routed in performance and cabaret, we don't have the same pageant history the US does so there's an instant difference,” says British queen Cybil War, who throws a monthly party in London called Cybil’s House. “There's no denying that Drag Race has had an influence on UK drag but we're a really diverse community that's maintained that punk vibe.”

Over 10 seasons (and soon to be four seasons of All Stars) in America, Drag Race has helped create a new standard for drag that clearly springs from its pageant routes — from wigs to stoned tights to seven-minute performance track mixes, most queens in the U.S. adhere to the type of drag seen on television, although of course a more underground counterculture has long existed and continues to thrive. In the UK, a more punk form of drag is the norm, and British queens like Cybil War are hopeful Drag Race adapts to fit British Drag rather than aiming to change it.

“If you're going to do a UK version of the show you have to honor the essence of what's unique about drag in the UK,” says Cybil War. “The UK's Next Drag Superstar can't and shouldn't be selected by the same criteria as America's Next Drag Superstar. The histories are too different.”

This isn’t the first international edition of the show: earlier this year, Drag Race Thailand premiered on LINE TV with a group 10 contestants, co-hosted by Thai/Taiwanese drag queen Pangina Heals and stylist Art-Araya In-dra.

Whatever the form it takes, queens are excited to see British drag getting the recognition it deserves.

"I’m so excited that Drag Race is coming over this side of the pond — it’s a glimmer of hope and glitter for Brexit Britain," says UK queen and nightlife impresario Jodie Harsh. "I know RuPaul is in for a treat — the queens over here are so talented and diverse."

“I think it's great to see the show finally coming to our shores and can't wait to see our community finally getting it's moment in the spotlight,” adds Cheddar Gorgeous, another UK queen. “2019 will be the year of British drag!”

RuPaul’s Drag Race will premiere in the UK in 2019.

WCM-Q conference explores medical humanities in the MENA region      Cache   Translate Page

The role of the medical humanities in improving understanding of both disease and wellness was explored at a two-day conference organized by Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q).

The Medical Humanities in the Middle East Program brought senior academics in the fields of medicine and the humanities from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and North America together at the Sheraton Hotel to discuss the impact on perceptions of health and disease of a broad spectrum of humanities subjects, including literature, history, politics, religion, art and art therapy, and medical ethics, among others.

The conference began with a keynote speech by Dr. Mohammed Ghaly of the College of Islamic Studies at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) on Islamic perspectives on ethical issues relating to genomics. There then followed a series of presentations by expert speakers arranged in five sessions addressing the arts and healing, humanities and literature, sociological and historical approaches to understanding healthcare, medical ethics, and culture and its impact on the clinic. Academics and professionals were in attendance from institutions including WCM-Q, Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatargas, Boston University School of Medicine, King’s College London, the American University of Beirut, University College London, and many others.

Dr. Alan Weber, professor of English at WCM-Q and a member of the organizing committee of the event, said: “The medical humanities have emerged as important and useful tools for helping medical practitioners, academics and students reconcile the pressing sociological, economic, philosophical and ethical issues that arise in the practice of medicine. This conference brought together experts from all over the world to discuss these issues, with the ultimate goal of discovering how far and in what ways humanistic approaches to medicine and the teaching of medicine can improve patient outcomes.”

The event featured presentations of abstracts of 24 research projects on topics such as the use of art therapy in medical settings for dealing with grief, the role of storytelling in trauma therapy, the impact of fluorescent lighting on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and the challenges of integrating the humanities into medical curricula.

WCM-Q’s Dr. Mohamud Verjee, associate professor of family medicine in clinical medicine/assistant dean for medical student affairs, gave a presentation and submitted an abstract examining the importance and nature of the listening skills deployed by physicians when conducting consultations with patients. Dr. Verjee said: “In the clinical setting, a physician’s behavior and attitude towards a patient are observed, and acknowledged, followed by implicit trust. The capacity to listen to patients’ histories is not limitless. Attentive listening is manifestly important. Not only is it essential to elicit the nature of a visit but what matters to the patient, and how they feel.” Dr. Verjee was also a member of the organizing committee, along with Ms. Jamie Gray, director of the Distributed eLibrary at WCM-Q.

The conference also saw research posters presented by Dr. Linda Miller of Imperial College London on ‘Graphic medicine as a reflective tool for self-efficacy and motivation’ and Dr. Tsai Pi-hua of Mackay Medical College in Taipei, Taiwan on ‘Preparing medical students for the writing of history of present illness: Marching from short story reading and the practice of visual art’.

Ms. Gray said: “Improved understanding of the human context that defines the giving and receiving of healthcare can ultimately lead to improved healthcare outcomes. We are therefore extremely grateful to all who participated in this conference and shared their valuable insights into the ways the humanities can be successfully integrated into medical education programs.”

In Taiwan's upset election, a complicated message for BeijingWhen Han Kuo-yu is sworn in later this month as the new mayor of Kaohsiung, Taiwan's second-largest city, he will be the first politician from the China-friendly Nationalist Party or Kuomintang (KMT) to govern the municipality in 20 years. As the historic cradle of “green” politics that champions Taiwan's independence, Kaohsiung was considered “deep green,” a prize many assumed the KMT could not win back. The sprawling industrial metropolis of 3 million people lies less than 200 miles from the Chinese mainland and had been ruled by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Proton pump inhibitors use and risk of chronic kidney disease in diabetic patients.

Diabetes Res Clin Pract. 2018 Nov 27;:

Authors: Yang H, Juang SY, Liao KF

Abstract
AIMS: Chronic kidney disease consumes a huge amount of medical resources and proton pump inhibitors may be a potential factor for the increasing prevalence. This population-based cohort study investigates the risk of chronic kidney disease in a diabetic population using proton pump inhibitors in Taiwan.
METHODS: This study is based on a specific diabetic database obtained from the National Health Insurance Research Database. Individuals with a new diagnosis of diabetes from 2002 to 2013 were enrolled. "Exposure" to proton pump inhibitors was defined as at least one prescription and dosage over 180 DDD (defined daily dose) in one year after the index date. A multivariable Cox proportional hazard model and competing-risk regression model were applied.
RESULTS: There were 5,994 patients in the final cohort of proton pump inhibitor users and 23,976 patients in the matched controlled cohort based on 1:4 propensity score matching. Compared with no exposure users, PPIs exposure group had more anemia prevalence, anti-hypertension medication and NSAIDs prescriptions. The multivariable Cox proportional hazard model showed that the adjusted hazard ratio of chronic kidney disease was 1.52 (95% CI 1.40-1.65) in diabetic individuals with PPIs exposure, compared with no exposure users.
CONCLUSIONS: Proton pump inhibitors use is associated with 1.52-fold increased risk of chronic kidney disease in diabetic patients when the dosage is over 180 DDD in one year in Taiwan.
