COP24: 'Just transition’ to cleaner, greener, economy will bring benefits to the world      Cache   Translate Page

Christian Aid highlights the opportunity for developing countries to leapfrog the fossil energy systems of the past to modern, clean alternatives.

At the UN climate summit in Katowice, Poland, the host nation is launching a declaration on creating a ‘just transition’ for fossil fuel reliant communities as the world weans itself off climate harming industries like coal.

Christian Aid’s International Climate Lead, Mohamed Adow, said that developed and developing countries have nothing to fear from the transition to a climate friendly economy.

“The opportunities of the green economy are already being felt.  In the USA there are more jobs in the solar industry alone than in generating electricity through coal, oil and gas combined. The solar industry is also creating jobs 17 times faster than the rest of the economy. Around the world there are now more than 10 million people employed in renewables with this figure rising.

“Research from the London School of Economics this year showed that the amount of retraining needed to make people ready for the transition to green jobs is much lower than many realise. Their analysis showed that in the USA, 44 per cent of workers already have the transferable skills needed to contribute to the green economy.”

There has also been recent progress made in countries like Spain that have recently announced a 250 million euro package to help coal miners as part of plans to phase out Spanish coal mines.

Mr Adow said the developing world also had much to gain from the transition away from a carbon-based economy. “As well as tackling climate change the benefits for developing countries to leapfrog the fossil energy systems of the past to modern, clean alternatives, are clear.  Trudging along the dirty development path trod by richer countries will see developing nations stuck in the past and pollute their environments while ruining efforts to limit global warming.

“In order to jump straight to renewables developing countries will need finance and support from richer countries but the benefits will be felt by everyone.”

Don’t Trust the Process      Cache   Translate Page

Four hundred and eighteen days after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, 415 days after Bruce Arena’s resignation from the position, the U.S. men’s national team finally has a new permanent head coach: Columbus Crew manager and former U.S. national team defender Gregg Berhalter.

Berhalter’s first order of business will be stopping the wheels that have been spinning idly since the loss to Trinidad and Tobago that cost the team its qualification. The one squint-real-hard-and-you-might-see-it-if-you’re-the-insufferable-kind-of-optimist silver lining to failing to qualify was that the U.S. would have a 10-month head start on preparing for the 2022 tournament. Since the World Cup in Qatar doesn’t start until November, a promising crop of young talent would have a five-year cycle to grow into the new coach’s system.

That time is now lost. Spain hired its new coach eight days after being eliminated from the World Cup. Egypt and Tunisia, both knocked out by the end of June, made their hires by Aug. 1. (Tunisia has already fired Faouzi Benzarti, even though he won all three of his games in charge and led them to qualification at the 2019 African Cup of Nations.) Meanwhile, the U.S. has waited, first for the election of the new U.S. Soccer president, Carlos Cordeiro, in February; then for the hiring of the new men’s team general manager, Earnie Stewart, in June; then, finally, for the end of the Crew’s MLS season earlier this month. Four hundred and eighteen days. The only thing more depressing than the morass the men’s program found itself in post-Trinidad is how reluctant U.S. Soccer has seemed to pull itself out.

The nets, from what we know of the hiring process, do not appear to have been cast far and wide. New York Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch, perhaps the co-favorite along with Berhalter, took himself out of consideration by moving to RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga as an assistant. Other mooted possibilities, such as Peter Vermes of Sporting Kansas City, said they didn’t get further than preliminary talks. FC Dallas coach Óscar Pareja, who just took a job with Mexico’s Club Tijuana, told reporters in late September that he hadn’t gotten an interview. (He apparently did speak to U.S. Soccer sometime after that, according to Yahoo’s Doug McIntyre.)

Other foreign candidates such as former Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio and Atlanta United manager Tata Martino, formerly of Argentina and Barcelona, said they weren’t even contacted, the latter possibly because of an asinine requirement that the new manager speak English fluently. Earlier this month, Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl reported that former Spain and Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui had reached out to U.S. Soccer via an intermediary to express interest in the job, only to be told it was too close to the end of the process to bring in a new candidate.

Four hundred and eighteen days is a lot of time to spend not interviewing people. U.S. Soccer has yet to convince anyone that Berhalter didn’t have the job all along. This is a slight problem only because his brother, Jay Berhalter, already works high up in U.S. Soccer as the chief commercial and strategy officer, overseeing broadcast and corporate partnerships and event operations. In theory, hiring a new national team coach is well outside Jay’s purview, but the process has not exactly been a model of openness and transparency, and at the very least Gregg’s smooth path into the country’s most prominent job is bad optics. Some U.S. Soccer fans have already spent much of the past decade carelessly crying nepotism. You would think the federation might have an interest in trying to stave that off this go-around.

Awkward family ties or no, Berhalter is a heartening if not exhilarating hire for a program that really needs to get this one right. He comes to the job with—and almost certainly got the job because of—a clearly defined style of play that he’s instituted in Columbus over the past five years, one based on stretching the defense laterally then quickly changing the point of attack to hit the gaps that have been created. The system has coaxed career years out of three different center forwards: Kei Kamara in 2015, Ola Kamara in 2017, and Gyasi Zardes in 2018. Zardes was playing right back for the Los Angeles Galaxy a year ago, and this year he finished tied for fourth-most goals in the league.

The Crew has had up and down years both defensively and offensively since Berhalter took over before the 2014 season. This year it scored the second-fewest goals in the league, though it balanced that out with an organized defense that limited opponents’ transition opportunities. Columbus hasn’t won a trophy during Berhalter’s tenure, though it did finish as MLS Cup runner-up in 2015 and made the playoffs in four of his five years despite a salary budget that’s in the league’s bottom third.

After spending the better part of a decade wandering the tactical wilderness with only Jürgen Klinsmann’s motivational speaking and Bruce Arena’s let-the-old-guys-figure-it-out strategy as guides, literally any coherent soccering system seems like an upgrade for the U.S. Even 2018, the team’s inadvertent gap year free from the responsibilities of a major tournament or qualifying, has been spent toiling in interim head coach Dave Sarachan’s off-the-rack 4-1-4-1, which sacrificed creativity and attacking intent in favor of stability and numbers behind the ball. Same as it ever was, though in Sarachan’s defense he has missed his key source of both creativity and attacking intent for much of the year. Christian Pulisic suited up for the U.S. just three times in 2018 after being given the summer off to rest and picking up small injuries during the first two of the fall international windows.

Without a permanent head coach or the team’s best player, U.S. Soccer leaned hard into the mantra of generational change to gin up interest in its 2018 games. Sarachan trotted out some incredibly young lineups this year, giving 27 total caps to 20-and-under players Tim Weah, Josh Sargent, Weston McKennie, and Tyler Adams, then fed those lineups to the likes of France, Brazil and Colombia, where they’ve won one of their past eight. No matter. “The Future is US,” according to U.S. Soccer’s new, maddeningly vague marketing campaign. What future? When?

It’s the federation’s own “Trust the Process,” a promise that while things may have gotten bad, they are being handled by someone, somewhere. But U.S. Soccer, which drew out the program’s most important decision for 418 days and still managed to bungle its execution, has done little to prove it deserves that trust. (On the men’s side, at least. The U.S. women are rampaging through the present like a T-1000, going undefeated in 2018 ahead of their World Cup next summer.)

Instead the federation is passing the responsibility to make good on that promise—and the promise of its talented young players—on to Berhalter. U.S. Soccer is trusting that his structure will help the team succeed at the international level, and that his results will help fans forget what a shambles the hiring process ended up being.

Cheese Talk: Austin’s John and Kendall Antonelli Pick 3 Top Cheeses (Wine Spectator)      Cache   Translate Page

What are the cheese pros excited about right now? Like wine, the world of cheese is vast and diverse—potentially overwhelming, but rewarding to explore. No one is happier to guide you than your neighborhood cheesemongers. You should talk to them! In "Cheese Talk," we introduce you to a top cheesemonger and ask them for three cheeses to look for this month, as well as what wines or other beverages to pair with them.

Not many labors of love begin with a mid-honeymoon announcement that your new spouse wants to quit his career, but that’s exactly how Kendall and John Antonelli’s journey to the top of the cheese world began.

The couple met as students at Georgetown University. John, from Suffern, N.Y., was chairman of Students of Georgetown, Inc., the student-run business that includes a campus grocery store, coffee shops and more; Kendall, a literal cowgirl who grew up on a ranch in north Texas, served as “The Corp’s” V.P. of grocery. John followed Kendall back to Texas after graduation. When the couple married in 2008, he had a successful career as a CPA at Deloitte; she was practicing immigration law and advocating for human-trafficking victims.

“We were on our honeymoon in Grenada,” says Kendall. “John was reading a sci-fi apocalyptic teen novel and thinking, ‘If the world ends today, was it all worth it?’ and he turns to me and says, ‘I just had the perfect wedding. I have the perfect wife. I love our home. I love our dogs. I love our city. … I just can’t stand my job.’ I said ‘OK … what do you want to do?’ and he said, ‘Something in cheese.’”

It wasn’t completely out of the blue. In high school, John’s older brother had given him a George Foreman Grill. It inspired him to start a grilled-cheese club with his classmates and a few teachers. “We were debating the merits of white Kraft vs. yellow American singles,” laughs John. “We weren’t working with the cheeses we work with now … there was a lot of Velvee.”

Post-honeymoon, John threw himself into cheese. He attended the first-ever Murray’s Cheese Boot Camp in New York. (Kendall’s mother helped talk the specialty retailer into creating the program, and Kendall took the course not long after John.) He interned with legendary affineur Hervé Mons in France, and the couple explored the cheese cultures in Italy and Spain as well.

“Then we started running a gourmet grilled-cheese club out of our house,” Kendall says. “It was a six-course grilled-cheese dinner. And we learned a couple things about ourselves. One, we don’t really like slaving away over the stove. And two, we love being with people and building community through food; we love eating and talking. So we put that together and said, ‘Hey, what if we tell the story of artisanal food?’”

Andrew Bennett
Austin’s favorite mom-and-pop cheese shop

Antonelli’s Cheese Shop opened in 2010, and it’s been full-steam ahead ever since. “Now we have two shops, one with a kitchen,” says Kendall. “We have a warehouse selling wholesale to about 150 chefs and caterers. We have a Cheese House private-events venue hosting more than 200 events a year. We ship cheese nationwide, and we have 30 to 40 employees, but we still consider ourselves a small mom-and-pop. We joke that our cheese shop was our first baby that kept us up for sleepless nights, but since then we’ve had two biological babies. And they love cheese and prosciutto as well!”

Along the way, John was named to the board of directors of the American Cheese Society; he recently concluded a term as president. Kendall is on the board of the American Cheese Education Foundation, a non-profit alliance overseen by the ACS. “American cheeses are gaining a stage in the world market,” says John, “and that will continue, because our cheesemakers are so tremendous at what they do, so creative—it’s amazing.”

Their flagship shop carries 100 or so cheeses, about 70 percent of them domestic, along with jams, fresh-baked bread, charcuterie, pickled goods, mustards, chocolates and more. They also carry about 30 wines, all organic, sustainable or biodynamic, plus a few dozen beers.

“Our goal is that a customer comes in and sees something they know, and that becomes an entry point for us to get them talking and tasting and trying other things,” says Kendall. “Our mission is ‘Do good, eat good.’ We support artisans who make their food in a way that’s great for their animals, their land, the planet, their team and, most important, is delicious.” Each month, through the Antonellis’ philanthropy plan, they select one Charitable Cheese Cause to spotlight and support; this year's recipients have included Big Love Cancer, the Texas Land Conservancy and Keep Austin Fed, among others. They also regularly contribute to charity events and fundraisers, including raising nearly $10,000 for hurricane-relief efforts in 2017.

Oma is made at Von Trapp Farmstead and ripened to perfection at the Cellars at Jasper Hill.

Von Trapp Farmstead–Cellars at Jasper Hill Oma

Milk: Cow
Category: Washed-rind tomme
Region: Waitsfield, Vt.
Age: 10 to 14 weeks
Price: $35 per pound

Kendall says: I love Oma, but especially this time of year. Made by the Von Trapps—yes, relatives of those Von Trapps—on a farmstead operation in Waitsfield, Vt., Oma means "grandmother" in German. And this cheese is like a big ole hug from Grandma. It's comforting, bulging and a little stinky. It's a washed-rind cheese, resulting in an orange-hued rind with a straw-yellow paste that comes from the milk of primarily Jersey cows on their farm. While perhaps [smelling] a little funky, it actually has sweet and nutty flavors with a hint of garlic scapes.

Kendall's recommended pairing: The appearance, the texture, the flavor … it all makes me want to curl up on the couch in front of a fireplace with a plate of cured meats, pickles, mustard and pumpernickel bread with a nice stout—cuddled up in that orange-and-green afghan blanket Grandma made in the ’70s. Waxing poetic? Yes. Overstated description? Perhaps. But that's exactly what this cheese makes me feel. (For the record, my grandmother never crocheted an afghan, but eating this cheese makes me feel like she did.)

Wine Spectator picks: Most tomme-style cheeses (a category of small to medium-size wheels that originated in the French and Swiss Alps) share a nutty characteristic, and Oma is no different. But it also has a washed rind, which gives it a marked pungency. Aromatic whites like dry Riesling, Viognier and Gewürztraminer, as well as Grüner Veltliner and Pinot Gris, are lovely complements to Oma, along with light-bodied reds like Merlot, Pinot Noir (especially Spätburgunders) or Gamay. Try the delicate A to Z Wineworks Pinot Gris Oregon 2017 (87 points, $15, 66,726 cases made) or intense Yalumba Viognier South Australia The Y Series 2017 (90, $13, 19,000 cases imported, 2018 Top 100: No. 56).

The Terre des Volcans imprint of Fourme d’Ambert comes from the cave of French cheese star Hervé Mons.

Fourme d’Ambert Terre des Volcans

Milk: Cow
Category: Semi-firm blue
Region: Auvergne, France
Age: 3 months
Price: $21 per pound

John says: One of the first cheeses I fell in love with was Fourme d'Ambert Terre des Volcans. Sometimes you want a blue that smacks you in the face; sometimes you want a blue that lures you in with a friendly approach and just reminds you what a good, reliable cheese is. This pasteurized cow's-milk blue is the latter, offering even folks who don't love blue a new chance to change their minds with its fudgelike texture that's rich, creamy, milky and earthy. The flavors can range from fruity to mushroomy.

John's recommended pairing: I recently took this home and enjoyed it with a bar of dark chocolate and a bottle of Nebbiolo.

Wine Spectator picks: Blues are perhaps the most strongly, sharply flavored category of cheeses and, not coincidentally, they’re most classically paired with rich and powerfully flavored wines (see: Stilton with Port; Roquefort with Sauternes). Fourme d’Ambert is on the gentler, creamier end of the blue spectrum, which is why it’ll pair beautifully with a young Langhe Nebbiolo like Michele Chiarlo Nebbiolo Langhe Il Principe 2016 (89, $20, 10,000 cases made). But for an eye-opening study in contrasts, try it with a bracingly tart sparkling wine like an extra brut or brut nature (aka “zero dosage”) like Bruno Paillard Extra Brut Champagne Première Cuvée NV (92, $50, 20,000 cases made). The lively acidity and minerally effervescence is a bright foil to a mouthcoatingly creamy, salty blue.

Fat Tailed Tomme matures from a fudgy-textured youth into a firm, almost crumbly Manchego-style Texas original.

Veldhuizen Fat Tailed Tomme

Milk: Sheep
Category: Washed-rind tomme
Region: Dublin, Texas
Age: 3 to 10 months
Price: $36 per pound

John says: If Oma is an everyday fave and Fourme d'Ambert is an old friend, then Fat Tailed Tomme is the novelty that recently came into our lives. Made in Dublin, Texas, by the Veldhuizen family, this is their first attempt at sheep's-milk cheeses, a rarity in Texas—if they existed at all! Stuart and Connie have been making raw cow's-milk cheeses for decades and aging them in their caves built in the side of a hill, and we're excited they've added this to their lineup. When their daughter Rebecca wanted to move back to the family farm, they told her she needed to earn her keep. It was her dream and hard work that launched their farmstead sheep’s-milk creamery.

Taking inspiration from popular Manchego styles, Fat Tailed Tomme is named after the Awassi breed of sheep, known for their high milk production and—you guessed it—fat tails. Made with raw milk, it's aged a minimum of two months, but they're finding that flavor peaks around eight to 10 months, with notes of pineapple and other tropical fruit flavors, as well as hints of pasta. It develops a natural rind that is rubbed with olive oil.

John’s recommended pairing: Pair it with a dry sparkling cider.

Wine Spectator picks: Sheep’s milk has more than twice the fat content of cow’s milk, yielding cheeses with especially rich pastes. Fat Tailed Tomme is a Lone Star tribute to Spanish Manchego, so try it with a late-release Rioja Crianza like Bodegas Faustino 2014 (88, $14, 88,000 cases made), Bodegas LAN 2014 (88, $14, 96,000 cases made) or Cune 2015 (88, $13, 10,000 cases imported).

EU adopts plan on bank money laundering, may delay reforms      Cache   Translate Page
European Union finance ministers on Tuesday adopted a plan to enhance the bloc's defences against money laundering at banks, but the move could slow a legislative reform on banking supervision. The action plan is meant to be the EU response to high-profile cases of alleged money laundering at banks in several EU states, including Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Spain, the Netherlands, Britain and Cyprus. Ministers agreed there was a "need to strengthen the effectiveness of the current framework" to counter money laundering, and proposed some non-legislative actions to implement in coming months. But the plan did not include any recommendation for legislative changes. Nor did it address calls from the European Central Bank to set up an EU-wide agency to counter money laundering. The plan could also delay proposed reforms of money-laundering supervision from the European Commission in September, because ministers first want to assess the recent cases of financial

El Gol Digital report this morning that he “has decided to leave in January” and that Valencia are already close to agreeing a contract. Reports in Italy, however, suggest Fàbregas might move to Milan instead.

China's economy is stable and President Xi is signing 100s of billions of dollars with nation states in the past month from Philippines to Spain Argentina Panama Portugal etc .... in contrast to Trump he appears to be highly frustrated achieving hardly anything. Passenger flights grounded by strikes must be repaid under EU law, warns Civil Aviation Authority

The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority is taking legal action against Ryanair over the airline’s refusal to compensate thousands of UK customers affected by flight disruption over the summer.

Ryanair was hit by its worst ever strikes in the summer, as walkouts by pilots and cabin crew over pay and conditions forced it to cancel flights, including to major holiday destinations such as Spain, Italy and Portugal. Passengers have made claims for compensation to the airline, but these have been rejected by Ryanair on the grounds that the disruption arose from “exceptional circumstances” and therefore exempt.

He was ordained a priest in 1882.He soon became the Salesian provincial superior in Spain, where he opened many new houses and then served as vicar-general of the Salesians before becoming the Rector Major in 1922, Don Bosco’s third successor. His humble and quiet leadership of the order – he preferred to remain in the background of events, unnoticed in the crowd -- combined with his tremendous saintly virtue and apostolic zeal, and a healing miracle attributed to him at the end of the Second World War, prompted his cause for canonization. He died on December 5, 1931 in Turin, and was beatified on April 29, 1990 by Pope John Paul II.“What must you do to have life? Before all else, the first thing you have to do is pray for courage every day to carry the cross the Lord has assigned you.           General Motors is proof to the world that slashing wages isn't the ticket to profitability      Cache   Translate Page
German and Japanese auto manufacturers succeed despite sticking to a high-wage model.

General Motors just gave its workers a lot less reasons to feel grateful, announcing right after the Thanksgiving holiday that the automobile manufacturer planned to cut its salaried workforce by 15 percent, to dump most of its car models and to kill off five North American plants, in Detroit and Warren, Michigan; Warren, Ohio; White Marsh, Maryland; along with its Oshawa, Ontario, plant north of the border. Yes, it’s a globally competitive business, and General Motors, like other American automobile manufacturers, has faced challenges from abroad. Additionally, some of GM’s problems have been self-inflicted, given its patchy record on safety matters and its abhorrent downplay of the resultant accidents. The company also put some of the blame on Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs, which they claimed added about $1 billion in additional costs.

Upon closer inspection, however, the layoffs can’t simply be dismissed as an inevitable byproduct of globalization, or the impairment of free trade. There is something else going on here, a consideration that goes to the heart of GM’s flawed business model. It is tied to financialization, notably the CEO stock market-based compensation, which induces decisions that might elevate the share price in the short term, but often to the detriment of the company’s long-term success (like GE).

Along with the financialization of GM, the decision to offshore manufacturing in relatively low-wage locations hasn’t helped much. Outsourcing manufacturing in this way has, paradoxically, exacerbated GM’s problems. The sedan market (where GM is experiencing a large proportion of its competitive difficulties these days) typifies this conundrum. The lower and middle ends are dominated by Asia, which operate in a market segment where GM can never get its labor costs low enough to compete against them; the high end is dominated by Audi, Mercedes and BMW, German manufacturers that have devoted considerable capital investment so as to shore up the top-of-the-line models. Here, GM is unable to match the German brands, having chosen the soft option of offshoring its labor, avoiding extensive investment that would have otherwise allowed them to upgrade their production.

As Seymour Melman has noted in his work Dynamic Factors in Industrial Productivity, the unremitting focus on low-cost labor, which has been a key component of business models adopted by American corporations such as GM, creates disincentives toward capital investment decisions that would otherwise drive GM’s products further up the technology curve toward higher-margin products (which in turn yield higher profits and are less prone to competitive pressures from low-end car manufacturers, thereby alleviating the need to outsource manufacturing in the first place). It is quite likely that the historic paranoia about labor organizing in the U.S. is the underlying driver for this monomania.

By contrast, the stress on high-quality domestic engineering capability is something that Germany extends to other forms of high-tech manufacturing goods and services. Economists Jesus Felipe and Utsav Kumar have conducted a study illustrating that countries such as Germany have used capital investment to move up the technology curve to all sorts of higher-end products. Hence, it has a market share of 18 percent in the total world exports of the top-100 most complex products, vs. France 3.6 percent, Italy 3.1 percent, and Spain 0.9 percent.

Germany’s manufacturing success, therefore, is not a function of lower wages. Germany’s manufacturing unit labor costs have declined in a relative sense (especially relative to its Eurozone competitors) over the past decade, but in absolute terms, Germany’s manufacturers, including the auto producers, did not resort to a strategy of nominal wage squeezes or extensive offshoring to cheap labor locales such as China. As the economist Servaas Storm has argued: “It was German engineering ingenuity, not nominal wage restraint or the Hartz ‘reforms,’ which reduced its unit labor costs.” Engineering ingenuity largely came about through well-targeted capital investment and enabled German labor productivity to increase some 8 percent relative to its European and American counterparts.

As a result, Germany has become stronger and more productive in high-value-added, higher-tech manufacturing. Although some manufacturing has been outsourced to adjoining Eastern European countries, its leading companies have preserved an industrial ecosystem, which has enabled Germany to conserve more high-end jobs domestically in aggregate.

On the flip side, American manufacturers have generally taken the soft option of outsourcing and “demodularizing” production. As a result, they degraded industrial quality, increased development lead time, and increased unit costs in the process (Boeing’s 787 “Dreamliner” being a spectacular case in point). At this point, the U.S. doesn’t have what you could call a dynamic manufacturing economy. This has led to a perverse situation described last year by business journalist Jim Harger:

“Industry experts say that cadre of talented tool and die makers is growing in short supply in Michigan just as the demand is increasing.

“‘The average tool and die maker is 56 years old,’ says Baron, president and CEO of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR).

“‘We have not been back-filling. We are running out of talent as the cadence for cars is increasing and the launch rate is increasing.’

“About 75 percent of the tool and die makers in the workforce today are expected to retire in the next five to seven years. Meanwhile, it can take up to 10 years to train a master tool and die maker.”

So Detroit was left with production bottlenecks, because of the shortage of tool and die makers, which represented an important missing gap in production.

Of course, if management’s main incentive is to manage the company’s stock price, rather than the underlying business, it tends to do things like offshoring, which helps to juice the short-term quarterly profits. The share price generally follows suit. The long-term cost (which is usually seen well after the stock options have been cashed and the executive compensation has been paid out) is a production deficiency in the future, which can’t be easily replaced, as Professors Gary P. Pisano and Willy C. Shih explained in Harvard Business Review:

“As manufacturing plants closed or scaled back, many people in those occupations moved on to other things or retired. Seeing fewer job prospects down the road, young people opted for other careers. And many community and vocational schools, starved of students, scaled back their technical programs.”

As if by clockwork, GM’s share price initially greeted the news of the plant shutdowns with a 5 percent upward spike (that is, until adverse comments/threats from President Donald Trump, which muted the rise). The initial market reaction is exactly the sort of thing that further incentivizes stock-laden management to continue to formulate strategy with a view toward goosing a share price, rather than focusing energies on the underlying business operations themselves.

Following a classic pattern we have seen since the 1980s, GM’s CEO, Mary Barra, is the highest-paid auto CEO in the world, via a combination of salary and stock awards. In general, highly paid American manufacturing CEOS have been compensated for their willingness to hollow out compensation to their labor force. For the last two years, Barra has earned over $21m annually. Clearly, she has neither suffered the consequences of her company’s defective ignition switches, nor her company’s declining market share in the sedan market (the ostensible rationale for the layoffs).

The GM layoffs should not be blithely dismissed as another inevitable casualty of globalization. Nor are they a parable illustrating the dangers of increased protectionism (even though that is the narrative that GM wants you to believe). In fact, it is part of a much broader story, particularly in the U.S., where workers continue to deal with the consequences of labor casualization (i.e., flexible “alternative work arrangements”), the outsourcing of manufacturing to other countries, and the ultimate blowback to these increasingly financialized corporations, such as GM, as they continue to embrace measures that degrade their workforce, diminishing America’s viability as a source of highly skilled, good-paying jobs as a consequence.

There are other alternatives, as Germany proves. We occasionally get glimpses of the scale of this homegrown deterioration when a big layoff announcement is made. But seldom do we truly examine the underlying causes, the consequences of which continue to be masked by a hitherto ebullient stock market, which has become a wealth recycling machine for corporate CEOs, even as it provides nothing more than the aura of a Potemkin-like economic prosperity for the rest of us.

Comment on Photoessay: Autumn again by Peter Boender       Cache   Translate Page
Although it's certainly a factor, latitude isn't the only thing that determines the weather. It's mainly because of the particular climate of the location (and yes, there can be yearly variations). Tennessee has a land climate, while Tokyo has a sea climate. Sea climates tend to be "softer, more mellow", while land climates are generally a bit more "distinct and extreme". The predominating ocean current flowing along the east coast of Japan is a big influence as well. Other examples of cities on the same latitude: New York, NY and Madrid, Spain. Definitely not the same weather type. Also compare cities on the North American east shores with cities on the European west shores, even those on the same latitude. They're all on the Atlantic ocean, but the European side has a much warmer sea climate than the comparable cities in North America, simply because of the warm gulfstream on the east side of the North Atlantic, whereas Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Massachusetts, Long Island and the like are hit by a cold gulfstream arriving from the polar regions.
Can England win UEFA Nations League? Bookies cast their vote after semi-final draw      Cache   Translate Page

A resurgent Netherlands team is all that is standing between England and a place in the final of the first ever UEFA Nations League, and the bookies are backing the Three Lions to bring the Dutch back down to Earth.

To Win UEFA Nations LeagueEngland7/4£30: Bet £10 Get £30 in Free BetsBet £10 Get £30.

The final four of the Nations League has thrown up a few surprises, none more so than the appearance of a Netherlands team who looked to set to be involved in a battle against relegation from the top tier after being paired with Germany and world champions France.

However, they were able to upstage Les Bleus in order to win the three-team group and advance to the final four, and they will now look to continue their climb back up the international ladder by eliminating an England team that avenged the World Cup exit at the hands of Croatia by eliminating the Croatians and Spain from their group.

The bookies are not expecting that to happen though.

England remain favourites to win the inaugural UEFA Nations League, but they are no longer sole leaders in the market because they are now joined on 7/4 by European champions Portugal, who have been paired with surprise package Switzerland in the semi-finals.

In terms of match betting, England are 13/10 with William Hill to get the better of the Netherlands in 90 minutes, with a victory for the Dutch priced up at 15/8 and the draw available at 11/5 at this time.

The Three Lions are odds-on favourites ‘To Qualify’ for the final at 4/6, with the Netherlands 11/10 to spring an upset and book their first appearance in a major international final since losing the 2010 World Cup Final against Spain.

In the other tie, Portugal are 4/6 to get the job done in 90 minutes and 1/3 to advance from the semi-finals, with Switzerland 9/4 to pull off a shock victory and qualify for the Nations League final.

Tita Llorens Bagur won the 2017 World Open Water Swimming Performance of the Year, but her 101.6 km swim between the Spanish mainland and Cala Colodar on Ibiza across the Canal de Ibiza in 36 hours 16 minutes at the age of 49 was even more impressive.

A great interview in both Spanish and English with Open Water News is posted here.

Llorens is shown above with other WOWSA Award winners Adrian Sarchet and James Harrison of Sea Donkey in Guernsey (World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year), Antonio Argüelles of Mexico (World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year), and Jaimie Monahan of the USA (World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year).

Courtesy of Diego López Dominguez , Southern Ocean along the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica.

Spain's Diego López Dominguez is finally home in New York City after 20 days on the road for his Antarctica trip where he was one of 14 swimmers who successfully completed the International Ice Swimming Association-sanctioned Antarctica Ice Kilometer Swim, finishing third overall in 12:40:90 in the -1.2°C water in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica.

"It has - no doubt - been one of the most, if not the most, amazing experiences in my life, swimming and otherwise.

The conditions, as you heard from Jean Craven and Ram Barkai, were harsh and dynamic throughout the trip. We were basically on standby for the whole trip.

However, it was extremely helpful and inspiring to be in a group, with such a team of incredible ice swimmers from all over the world. Individual success meant nothing until we all finished and returned home with a 14 out of 14 score.

Swimming an Ice Kilometer in -1.2°C water with strong winds and non-stop snow in the open water while sorting icebergs is not easy. And if you add the magic and intimidating landscape of Antarctica, it becomes a really unique experience. Results are very relative, but I was honored to share the heat – and the overall podium with Petar Stoychev and Victoria Mori. What two amazing competitors they are.

Antarctica was my last swim of the year and of the Continents Seven project. It has been an incredible and enriching year that will change my life forever

López - known as the Global Swimmer - is among the nominees for the 2018 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year along with the following individuals:

1. Benoît Lecomte (France/USA)
2. Cameron Bellamy (South Africa)
3. Diego López Dominguez (Canary Islands)
4. Ferry Weertman (Netherlands)
5. Igor Lukin (Russia)
6. Ion Lazarenco Tiron (Republic of Moldava)
7. John Batchelder (USA)
8. José Luis Larrosa Chorro (Spain)
9. Kristóf Rasovszky (Hungary)
10. Lewis Pugh (Great Britain/South Africa)
11. Maarten van der Weijden (Netherlands)
12. Ned Denison (Ireland/USA)
13. Rohan More (India)
14. Vladimir Mravec (Slovakia/Australia)
15. Yaroslav Pronin (Belarus)

López, originally from the Canary Islands, not only completed his Continents Seven in Antarctica, but he also participated in races in Haiti, USA, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Bolivia, England, France, Turkey, and Hong Kong throughout the year - completing 17 swims totalling 257 km on 7 continents.

Spanish Food Vocabulary: A Guide to Spanish Cuisine and Spanish Eating Culture — with Lots of Spanish Vocab      Cache   Translate Page

Can you eat your way to fluency in Spanish? Maybe not, but you can learn all about Spanish food culture, and how to talk about food in Spanish!

If you’re a foodie, then you know that food is the way to the heart of both a person and a culture! Even in your hometown, there may be a prominent food culture, type of food, food etiquette or eating habits that everyone enjoys. It’s an expression of where you live. County Cavan, Ireland, where I’m from, has its very own annual food festival to showcase unique local food.

Spanish cuisine is no exception. Food is a big part of culture in Spain, and it’s often an expression of love and friendship with others.

Everyone likes talking about food; it’s one of those universal small talk topics that most people feel comfortable with. So, understanding food vocabulary in Spanish and the Spanish food culture goes a long way.

That’s why there’s no yummier way to learn Spanish than through food. Exciting, right? You can have your cake and talk about it, too!

While we’re on the topic, I should say that the Spanish word for “food” is comida.

Hungry yet? You will be once we’re done!

Food Culture in Spain

Food habits in Spain are renowned for being quite unique. Eating and drinking are so crucial in Spanish culture, and bars are everywhere. There’s always an excuse to grab some tapas (small-portioned appetisers) and socialise at the local drinking hole! Most bars serve as restaurants and hangouts where Spaniards can enjoy futbol (“football”, or “soccer” in the US) together.

But the biggest difference in Spain's food culture is how and when they eat.

Spanish Manners & Eating Habits

Eating habits in Spain have largely centered around work life… and I do mean life. Currently, Spain runs on an 11-hour workday, although that’s changing in some areas. The workday starts around 9 am and doesn’t finish until 8 pm. Because of that, meal times are much farther apart than what most people expect.

El Desayuno (“Breakfast”)

In the morning, Spaniards enjoy a light desayuno (breakfast) before heading to work. It often consists of café con leche (“coffee with milk”) and a pastry or roll with jam, like bollos (“sweet rolls”).

Because of the very long gap between el desayuno and la comida (literally, “the food” but means “lunch” in this context), many people will often take a break mid-morning for a snack, much like the hobbit eating habit of Second Breakfast or Elevenses. This snack usually consists of tapas, like the famous tortilla de patata (“potato omelette”).

La Comida (“Lunch”)

Also called el almuerzo, Spaniards strongly believe that food should be thoroughly enjoyed, so lunch is no rushed affair. In fact, when workers go to lunch around 2 pm, the workplace typically shuts down for two or three hours so Spaniards can go feast. In Spain, lunch is the largest meal of the day and has three or more courses. It’s even common to drink wine at lunch, and it’s often included in the meal price!

Common lunch foods in Spanish culture include a soup or pasta, a protein-filled dished of meat or fish, salad, and dessert such as flan (vanilla custard) or simply fruit. Coffee, wine, and brandy are common drinks at lunch. You’ll almost always find plenty of bread at every meal to wipe the plate clean.

After the long lunch, it’s common to take a siesta or short nap. In some areas of Spain, siestas are even protected by law. In bigger cities like Madrid, however, this isn’t very common anymore.

La Merienda (“Snack”)

Because of the long work day, it’s not unusual to stop and grab another snack around 5 or 6 pm. La merienda is like afternoon tea in England and consists of something small such as bread, salami, fruit, cheese, chocolate, or other small finger foods.

La Cena (“Dinner/Supper”)

Since the workday finishes around 8 pm, dinner is eaten around 9 or 10 pm. It’s often small and simple compared to lunch, especially because it’s so late. Arroz cubano is a common meal at dinner, which is a fried egg, rice, and a tomato sauce. Dinner still usually includes a salad and small dessert of fruit, cheese, or flan.

Bocadillo de Medianoche (“Midnight Snack”)

The average Spaniard goes to bed around midnight every day, so a bocadillo de medianoche is not unheard of! Churros are often picked up on the way home from a night out socialising at the bar. Or they'll enjoy a nice, warm cup of Spanish hot chocolate.

Sobremesa (“Over the Table”)

It’s rude to eat and dash in Spain. The term sobremesa is used to describe the flow of conversation that happens after the meal is over. Spaniards not only take the time to savour their food, but also each other’s company.

Traditional Spanish Foods You Must Try

So, what are some typical Spanish dishes? The standard Spanish diet is Mediterranean, featuring lots of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats like olive oil. Spain has many unique and flavourful dishes, but these traditional Spanish foods are a must try!

One of the most common and traditional Spanish dishes, paella is a saffron rice dish with beans and meat. There are quite a lot of variations, and it can be topped with meat, fish, shrimp, or veggies. The most traditional dishes use rabbit, chicken, duck or even snails as the main protein, although seafood paella is very common. No matter where you find it, the ingredient that doesn’t change is the saffron rice. It’s most often eaten for lunch and originates from the beautiful city of Valencia.

Served chilled, this tomato-based soup is refreshing in the summer heat. It’s so popular, many eat it every day! Traditional gazpacho also happens to be completely meat-free, making it a perfect choice for vegetarians like me. It’s typically made with bright red, ripe tomatoes, garlic, cucumbers, peppers, bread and olive oil. So delicious! This soup comes from Andalusia, which is in the southernmost part of Spain where it gets very hot and, understandably, no one wants boiling hot soup.

Tortilla Española

Possibly the most popular and oft-eaten food in Spain, this potato omelette can be found anywhere and everyone knows how to make it. Although it sometimes has other ingredients, the traditional version is the potato-and-egg-only omelette.

Jamón Ibérico

Everywhere you go, you’ll find these ham legs on display. There are two kinds, from white pigs (jamón serrano) and black pigs (jamón ibérico), but the latter is more expensive. The meat is thinly sliced off the leg and eaten with bread, as a tapas dish.

Patatas Bravas

Meaning “brave potatoes”, this is a staple on every tapas menu, and a usual go-to choice for vegetarian tapas-lovers. These potatoes are fried and served with a spicy sauce. Spicy food isn’t popular in Spain, but this sauce is the exception to the rule. The sauce varies by region, but the potatoes are always the same.

You may have tried this before since it’s become popular around the world, but ask any Spaniard and they’ll tell you that the best chorizo is found in Spain. This is a spicy and sweet sausage, and usually quite garlicky. You’ll find it in many other recipes to add a depth and richness in flavour. Make sure to bring a breath mint!

Another tapas staple on every menu, these Spanish meatballs are served in a rich tomato sauce. There are some variations, though. In some regions, meatballs might even be made out of squid!

Pollo al Ajillo

Here’s a classic Spanish comfort food. Pollo al ajillo is a garlic chicken dish that’s cooked with rosemary, thyme, and a splash of white wine or sherry to give it a rich, comforting flavour.

[caption id="attachment_24365" align="aligncenter" width="2508"] Spain’s answer to France’s ratatouille, pisto is another amazing vegetarian dish you’ll find all over the country. It’s made with tomatoes, onions, aubergine, courgette and bell peppers, and sometimes served with a fried egg on top. Yum![/caption]

Witty And Stylish, 'Insurrecto' Offers An Inside View Of The Pain Of Colonization      Cache   Translate Page
Ever since I was young, I've loved stories set in the far-flung reaches of the West's many empires — from the British Raj of E. M. Forster's A Passage to India to the surreal Vietnam of Apocalypse Now . And I still love them, though I now realize that they usually look at other cultures from the vantage point of outsiders, even intruders. That's why, these days, I seek out books and movies that show how the world appears from the other side of the colonial looking glass. One of the most original ones I've found is Insurrecto , a dizzying new novel by Gina Apostol, who was born in the Philippines but now lives in the United States. Beginning in a present day Manila overseen by thuggish President Duterte, this witty, sneakily revelatory book dives into something that most Americans know virtually nothing about — the tortuous relationship between the U.S. and the Philippines, which America colonized for 50 years after claiming to liberate it from Spain in the late 19th century.           Advent - A brief history      Cache   Translate Page
Advent is observed in many Western Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting, self-examination, & preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas. The name Advent comes from the Latin word Adventus, which signifies a coming.

Advent has probably been observed since the 4C.  It would seem that Advent could not have occurred, until the Roman Catholic Church & state decided to declare December 25 as the day of the birth of Christ, in 345.  Advent was 1st recorded about 380 AD in Spain.
St. Perpetuus, Bishop of Tours 460-490, from Images of All the Saints of the Year... Paris: Chez Israël Henriet, 1636)

As far back as the 5C, there existed the custom of giving exhortations to the people in order to prepare them for Christmas. The oldest document, the 2nd book of the History of the Franks by St. Gregory Bishop of Tours (536-594), states that St. Perpetuus, one of his predecessors, had decreed a fast 3 times a week, from the feast of St. Martin until Christmas.  St Perpetuus, who died December 30, 490, was the 6th Bishop of Tours, from 460 to 490. It is unclear whether St. Perpetuus established a new custom, or merely enforced an already existing law.
St Gregory, Bishop of Tours (536-594) & King Chilperic I, from the Grandes Chroniques de France de Charles V, 14C illumination.

In the 4C & 5C, Advent was the preparation for the January "Epiphany" rather than Christmas.  It was also a time for new Christians to be baptized & welcomed into the church, while existing members of the church examined their hearts & focused on penance. Religious leaders exhorted the people to prepare for the feast of Christmas by fasting. Early documents show that many church leaders treated Advent as a 2nd Lent.

The 9th canon of the first Council of Macon, held in 582, ordained that between St. Martin's day & Christmas, the Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays, should be fasting days.  In 567, the 2nd Council of Tours enjoined the monks to fast from the beginning of December till Christmas.

The obligation of observing Advent, which, though introduced so imperceptibly, had by degrees acquired the force of a sacred law, began to be relaxed, & the 40 days from St. Martin's day to Christmas were reduced to 4 weeks.

Sometime in 6C Rome, the focus of Advent shifted to the second coming of Christ. In the 9C, Pope St. Nicholas reduced the duration of Advent from 6 weeks to 4 weeks. The 1st mention of Advent's being reduced to 4 weeks is to be found in a 9C letter of Pope St. Nicholas I to the Bulgarians.

After having reduced the time of the Advent fast, the church seemed to change the mandatory fast into a simple abstinence & required only the clergy to observe this abstinence. The Council of Salisbury, held in 1281, seemed to expect none but monks to keep it. On the other hand Pope Innocent III, mentions that, in France, fasting was uninterruptedly observed during the whole 40 days.

By degrees, the custom of fasting fell into disuse; and in 1362, Pope Urban V asked only that the clerics of his court should keep abstinence during Advent.  In his 4th Council, he enjoins the parish priests to exhort the faithful to go to Communion on the Sundays, at least, of Lent & Advent; & he strongly urges them to fast on the Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays, at least, of each week in Advent.

And finally, sometime in the middle ages--approximately the 1500's--an additional focus on the anticipation before Christ's birth was added to that of His 2nd coming.

Today Advent in most Christian churches begins on the Sunday nearest November 30, & covers 4 Sundays. Because the day it begins changes from year to year, so does the length of each Advent season.

California’s first Mencía just released by Lodi’s PRIE Winery      Cache   Translate Page

Silvaspoons Vineyards' young Mencía block in Lodi's Alta Mesa AVA

At the beginning of this month (December 2018), PRIE Winery quietly released its 2017 PRIE Silvaspoons Vineyard Alta Mesa-Lodi Mencía ($33). Only 1 barrrel (adding up to 22 cases) was made; representing, as it were, the first commercial bottling of Mencía grown and produced in California – significant even if a single barrel is less than an eye-drop in the vast ocean of wine produced all around the world each year.

But it means something because, well, big things always start off as an inkling in someone's mind; followed by a first cautious, maybe even shaky, step.

As wine grapes go, Mencía is a relatively little-known red wine varietal, even if cultivated in Spain’s Bierzo region probably since the days of the Roman Empire. While Mencía is not a mainstream varietal, there are more than a dozen different brands imported into the U.S. from Spain. Consequently, over the past twenty or so years, Mencía has become something of a wine geek’s varietal.

When asked why he planted Mencía in his Silvaspoons Vineyards in the first place, Lodi grower Ron Silva told us, in his usual unvarnished style, “It seemed like an interesting thing to do.”

We have written several times over the years of Mr. Silva’s habit of putting carts before horses; that is, planting grapes without really knowning if any winery would be interested in it. Twenty years ago, for instance, he instigated a modest trend by planting Verdelho after finding the grape growing in the patchwork quilt of tiny, lava rock walled gardens in his ancestral home of Ilha do Pico – one of the lonely volcanic islands in the Portuguese Azores. “Somehow, cuttings of Verdelho fell into my suitcase,” he has explained; and today, Silva’s plant material is registered with U.C.Davis’ Foundation Plant Services and available to the rest of the American wine industry.

Silvaspoons Vineyards' Ron Silva

As it turned out, Verdelho – along with Torrontés, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Amarela, and other examples of underappreciated, up-and-coming varieties courageously taken up by Silva –  is now one of many grapes which have found a natural second home in Lodi’s Mediterranean terroirs, adding to the region's growing reputation for "alternative" wines.

Before committing 100% to planting less than an acre of Mencía in his Alta Mesa-Lodi vineyard, Silva did his due diligence by purchasing a mixed case of Spanish produced Mencías from a specialty retail store in California. Says Silva, “I read somewhere that the grape was thought to be related to Cabernet Franc, but the Spanish Mencías I tasted seemed to have a fruit profile with a closer resemblance to Zinfandel than to a Cabernet, only with a rustic quality more typical of European wines.”

PRIE Winery

Mencía, as recent DNA profiling has established, is not related to Cabernet Franc. If anything, its closest relative appears to be a Portuguese grape known as Jaén do Dão, a grape even far more obscure than Mencía (correctly pronounced, incidentally, as men-thee-ah).

As you would expect, wine journalists who revel in geeky grapes have written quite a bit about Mencía. It produces a red wine of sensory qualities so elusive, it invariably inspires somewhat colorful rhetoric. Eric Asimov of the New  York Times, for instance, has described Mencía based reds as “haunting... in all its exotic fruit, wildflower and mineral glory.” In SFGate, Jon Bonné once wrote of the grape’s “primal, sometimes fierce aromas... beautifully sanguine, in addition to floral, spicy, animal scents and powerful mineral... (and) blood is a scent I don’t usually discuss... in polite company.” The Chicago Tribune’s Bill St. John describes Mencía as a red wine like “many colored buddhist prayer flags fluttering in the wind... red and blue fruits... wet black stone, slate stone... and a kind of ‘wine-iness,’ a grape-y sapidity... liquid, juicy in texture...“

PRIE''s John Gash tasting his 2017 Mencía with Ron Silva

It takes far less of a flight of fancy to appreciate the 2017 PRIE Mencía’s intense cherry skin perfume, which comes laced with tea-like scents and tannin, while tasting firmly dry with a tannin/acid edge and sensations suggesting more minerals than fruit.

This past November, PRIE’s married winemaking team of John and Lisa Gash invited Ron Silva to their winery for a final tasting before the launch of their first Mencía in December. Mr. Silva swirled, took a whiff, a sip and said: “The rustic quality of this wine comes across more like a European wine than a California varietal in that there is more on the palate than in the nose. Also like a European wine, there is a nice balance of tannin and acid – nothing soft and fruity about it.”

2017 Mencía clusters in Lodi's Silvaspoons Vineyards

Prompted by Silva’s observation of the wine's low-key aroma, Mr. Gash transfered his pour from a narrow, tulip shaped glass to a round “Burgundy” bowl. Finding, as he expected, more perfume when swirled in the more voluminous glass, Gash commented: “I agree with Ron, but there is also a beautiful, floral quality to the wine – subtle red cherry fruit, with a scent of rose petal.

“Maybe more important,” added Mr. Gash, “this will make a wonderful ‘food wine.’” Silva immediately concurred, saying: “Already I am thinking of dishes made with caramelized onions; maybe in a tart, served with good, aged cheeses... I also think it might be delicious with paellas made with combinations of seafood, meats and sausages.”

PRIE Winery co-owner/co-winemaker Lisa Gash

Commenting on the production, Mr. Gash told us: “The 2017 was aged in one neutral barrel and bottled early, to avoid oxidation and to preserve as much of the subtle fruit qualities as possible. We got double the amount of fruit in 2018, which will allow us to age the wine in a puncheon (i.e. roughly double-sized barrel) – again, to emphasize more of the varietal fruit character rather than the taste of oak.”

Added Silva: “I hope people understand that our Mencía vines are still young – 2017 was its first harvest – although quite often a vineyard’s first harvest is one of its best because of the natural balance of fruit and leaves you get in new vines. But insofar as the wine itself, our Mencía is still a work in progress. As the vines age, I think we'll get more distinct characteristics of the grape, like you find in Spanish Mencías. Still, I think we can all agree, this first vintage is extremely promising!”

El serio aviso de 'The New York Times' a España: "El fantasma se ha hecho carne"      Cache   Translate Page
Santiago Abascal

          Partagas Robusto      Cache   Translate Page
-- Wrapper: Cameroon. Filler: Dominican (Piloto Cubano), Mexican. Binder: Mexico San Andrean. Country of Manufacture: Dominican Republic. Factory Name: General Cigar Dominicana. -- The history: Not long after Jaime Partagas sailed from Spain to Cuba, he founded the cigar brand that bears his name. The year was 1845. Yet the greatest chapters of Partagas history were written by two other men, Ramon Cifuentes and the son who was named after him. Whether working together or alone, it was those two great cigar masters who made Partagas the leading Cuban cigar. But in 196l, two years after Fidel Castro had seized control of the Cuban government, Ramon Cifuentes was forced to flee the island, never to return. Seventeen years later, he was finally able to begin creating his Partagas cigars again, this time in the Dominican Republic, where his unmatched tradition of cigar making remains alive and well. The cigar: The secret of today's rich Partagas cigars lies in their wrapper leaves. Grown in Cameroon, the Central West African country where the steaming, sub-tropical climate unique to the fourth parallel is ideal for growing superb wrapper leaves, Cameroon wrappers have no equals for rich flavor. Indeed, Ramon Cifuentes determined that he could begin producing his Partagas cigars again only after he had discovered, years after the Cuban embargo had begun, that the best wrapper leaves were being grown in Cameroon rather than in Cuba. The experience: So rich yet never harsh, a Partagas cigar has all the flavor and character of the cigar that knew Cuba when.
