A story of grit: How a Bay Area resident is living out her American dream       Cache   Translate Page

Tucked away in La Cocina, a San Francisco kitchen incubator, is a woman living out her American dream. Her name is Nafy, and she came to the United States 10 years ago from Senegal, armed with a promise to her mother to bring back a degree and one to herself to live out her dreams.

The inspiration behind her move to the U.S. is not what you might expect.

“In Africa, we watch a lot of soap operas,” Nafy explained. “One that really influenced me was Beverly Hills 90210. And I’m seeing all of these kids at age 14, 16, working, driving cars, living in their own apartments, and I’m like oh my god, that’s the American dream? I want to dream like that too. So I told my mom, once I finished school, I would like you to help me go there.”

However, much like most things in life, it was easier said than done. In order to obtain her U.S. visa, Nafy had to queue overnight at the U.S. embassy to ensure she’d be the first in line. She arrived at 4 p.m. and was only let in around 9 a.m. the following morning. Nafy ultimately received her visa, and arrived in the United States in 1998.

Nafy holding a baobab fruit, a key ingredient in her products

Nafy went on to graduate with a degree from the University of San Francisco and worked as a marketing manager in Silicon Valley. She eventually got married and in 2009, she and her husband welcomed their baby boy. Unfortunately, her son was born a month early and was in need of medical attention and care. Despite this, she was only given 6 weeks of maternity leave, even though her son was in the NICU for 2 of those weeks. Recounting those times, Nafy said “I went back to work, I was pumping in the bathroom because there was nothing to accommodate new mothers.”

Finally, Nafy could not handle it anymore, “I quit, with no money left, with one income [her husband’s], and a child who needs a lot of help. At the same time, my mother, who by that point has joined us from Senegal, got diagnosed with dementia.”

It was an undoubtedly a hard time for Nafy and her family, and she felt like she had failed her mom.

“To me, the American dream was wearing nice suits, wearing high heels, having an office, traveling, and I didn’t have that anymore,” she said.  “So I felt like I did not achieve my American dream. So I said to my mom, what is another way I can reach the American dream? And she said ‘You don’t have to work for someone, to live the American dream. You can bring something from home, that way you can live the American dream.’ I said, what do you mean? She simply replied, ‘just think, why don’t you make the baobab juices we drink back home, make them here and sell them? You’ve had everyone you’ve made them for, tell you they’re good.’ ”

One thing led to another, and Terenga was born.

Terenga bars and their corresponding ingredients

However, getting a business started from the ground up was not easy, and Nafy knew she needed some help.

“I registered my business in 2016, from there to mid-2017, it was a lot of tasting, giving out free samples. So I wasn’t making much money. Someone told me why don’t you reach out to Kiva. Kiva does this thing where there is no interest, and you can pay back slowly. I thought that was such a good idea because even though I had a really good credit score I knew I could not go to banks and take out a loan for a company that isn’t even a year old yet.”

Today, Nafy’s Terenga energy bars and juices are sold in various grocery stores in the San Francisco Bay Area, and she has plans to expand it further.

Terenga juices can be found in select grocery stores across the Bay Area

When asked what her hope was for this holiday season, she said, “I would love for every American household to have a Terenga product in their kitchen tables. I really hoped to see something like that, either Terenga juice or Terenga energy bars. It would support my suppliers in the Bay Area, as well as those throughout Africa since Baobab grows all the way from Sub-saharan Africa to South Africa.”

Support entrepreneurs like Nafy, and help them achieve their American dreams.

Daily News Links Are Below These Opening Questions And Warnings
How much carbon monoxide are you in when in any motor vehicle?

Did you know that many people do not measure the air they breathe.

After prevention there is no greater awareness than measurement.
Awareness leads to quick thinking. Measurement leads to quick action.

Are you in the know?

Do I know enough about carbon monoxide and carbon monoxide poisoning to justify never knowing how much is in the air I breathe every day, everywhere I go?”

There are some people who want to be notified of the presence of carbon monoxide at levels or concentrations as soon as the gas is present, at concentrations well below those that can instigate poor health symptoms but not be high enough levels to sound the CO alarm they own.

There are some people who do not want to push a button on their CO alarm to see what low, aggravating levels of the poison might be in their home, or anywhere.

We have all been CO poisoned, some more than others
The following link takes you to a site with views from those who have been poisoned. The seriousness of carbon monoxide poisoning, the grief, suffering and disorientations experienced are clearly portrayed with the intent to help others and prevent future poisonings. With respect, please visit: Carbon Monoxide Survivor

What is in the air you are breathing right now?

What will you be doing today; walking into poison?
Who will be responsible for the air you breathe?
You may be the only person who can prevent your own poisoning.
We are all vulnerable to carbon monoxide exposure and poisoning.
Everyone has been poisoned by CO and will be poisoned again. The degree of the poisoning depends upon allowing yourself to be in a situation where someone else controls the air you breathe and the mechanisms for alarming notification.

Please read the alarm information on the package and in the instructions that come with the carbon monoxide alarm. Know that if it is a U.L. 2034 Listed product (or CSA 6.19 Listed), it is a high level alarm that has been tested to alarm no sooner than 70 PPM at the lowest (the alarm must resist for one hour when above this level) and when over 400 PPM before 15 minutes at the highest concentration, after resisting alarming for 4 minutes when over this level.

Know when your fire department and emergency responders begin wearing their breathing apparatus and what their civilian evacuation levels are for carbon monoxide; it may be as soon as the gas is present in your presence. Pregnant women, infants & children, people with heart & respiratory struggles, those suffering depression or chronic headaches and all people of vulnerable health should be alerted as soon as the gas begins to concentrate, around 10 PPM (parts per million) or lower.

You most likely need a low level carbon monoxide detector to sound off when carbon monoxide hazards are just beginning, not after you’ve been exposed to levels that make you have headaches, flu-like symptoms, increased tiredness, heart stresses or worse.

Do not take risks with carbon monoxide. Take responsibility for the air you breathe and the combustion systems you are responsible for. If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for others, unless you think $45.00, high level protection is good enough.

Help prevent injuries and deaths; don’t guess about carbon monoxide. Measure carbon monoxide for safety and knowledge. The more you test the more you learn. GET BUSY

Carbon monoxide may be an important molecule in migraine and other headaches
SAGE Journals - SAGE Publications
Abstract: Introduction - Carbon monoxide was previously considered to just be a toxic gas. A wealth of recent information has, however, shown that it is also an important endogenously produced signalling molecule involved in multiple biological processes. Endogenously produced carbon monoxide may thus play an important role in nociceptive processing and in regulation of cerebral arterial tone. (More)

HP Commits to Educate 100,000 Across Africa in the Next Three Years, Opens HP LIFE Center for Entrepreneurship in South Africa      Cache   Translate Page
  • HP pledges to empower 100,000  learners across Africa in next three years through the HP Foundation’s HP LIFE (Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs) program
  • HP opens a tech-enabled HP LIFE Center in South Africa, aimed at supporting local entrepreneurs
  • Commitment supports HP’s goals to enable better learning outcomes for 100 million people by 2025, and to enroll a million HP LIFE users between 2016 and 2025

At the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, HP (NYSE: HPQ) announced a new commitment to reach 100,000 learners across Africa over the next three years through the HP Foundation’s HP LIFE program, and kicked off the commitment by opening a new tech-enabled HP LIFE Center in South Africa. HP’s pledge supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 and furthers the company’s goals to enable better learning outcomes for 100 million people by 2025 and to enroll a million HP LIFE users between 2016 and 2025, as outlined in the HP 2017 Sustainable Impact Report.

By 2030, Africa will be home to 32% of the population under the age of 30, and the largest working age population by 2035. Yet, today’s youth unemployment in Africa is up to 3x higher than adult unemployment. HP LIFE offers free, online learning for users to gain the skills to start and grow their own business or improve their employment opportunities. Building on the success of this global program, HP is working with partners to open technology-enabled HP LIFE innovation centers to further support entrepreneurship and workforce development across the continent.

“We believe that education is a human right, that technology in the classroom is a critical component for a 21st century education, and that in today’s economy our learning is never done,” said Nate Hurst, Chief Sustainability and Social Impact Officer, HP. “Africa is experiencing rapid urbanization and digitization—and it’s essential that people have access to learn skills for the work of tomorrow. This new HP LIFE Center provides a launchpad for innovation and opportunity across the continent.”

In 2017, on the global stage at the Global Citizen Festival in Hamburg, Germany, HP announced a commitment to enabling better learning outcomes for 100 million people by 2025. The commitment to education is a part of HP’s broader Sustainable Impact strategy – a strategy to use the scope, scale and expertise of HP to drive positive, lasting change for the planet, its people and the communities where we live, work and do business.

“Sustainable Impact is fundamental to our reinvention and core to achieving our vision – to create technology that makes life better for everyone, everywhere,” said Hurst.

HP LIFE

In collaboration with institutions such as the Ekurhuleni West TVET College in Katlehong and its Centre of Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator, HP opened the HP LIFE Center in South Africa on November 30, a technology-enabled hub to facilitate learning, collaboration and entrepreneurship in a physical, face-to-face setting.

Built on the belief that entrepreneurs are the backbone of the global economy, HP LIFE offers 30 free, online courses focused on business and IT skills – from business planning and marketing, to raising capital and design thinking. To date, HP LIFE has reached 744,000 learners in 200 countries and territories. All users need is a computer and Internet connection to access HP LIFE, and the new, physical center in South Africa will create a more formal educational environment. HP LIFE has an enrollment goal of 1 million users between 2016 and 2025.

At the World Economic Forum’s 48th Annual Meeting in January, Youth for Technology Foundation (YTF) and HP Foundation announced a new 3D printing course to be delivered through the HP LIFE platform. 3D printing will fundamentally change the manufacturing industry. $4 to 6 trillion (USD) of the global economy will be disrupted in the next five to 10 years, shifting economic value and jobs across the globe. This new course is helping individuals to learn how to use 3D printing and create entrepreneurial opportunities.

HP and Global Citizen in South Africa

HP has been a proud partner of the Global Citizen movement since 2013, including supporting the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, a first for South Africa. Ahead of the December 2 festival in Johannesburg, HP ran several awareness and engagement building activities to highlight the partnership and HP’s commitment to Sustainable Impact, and to engage customers, employees and the public in acting on pressing global issues.

The Daily Show Remembers Nelson Mandela’s Legacy With a Cribs-Style Visit to Trevor Noah’s Childhood Home      Cache   Translate Page

In honor of Nelson Mandela’s legacy and the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, Trevor Noah took The Daily Show to his hometown of Johannesburg, South Africa to celebrate the impact of the iconic African leader.

The “Self-Deportation Edition” took viewers to Noah’s childhood home to meet his grandmother Coco, making the reunion a MTV Cribs-style visit.

Unlike the classic Cribs episodes before it, rather than highlighting his success by showing off his new life in America, Noah’s visit with his grandmother highlighted just how much Noah and Coco’s lives have been changed by the end of apartheid, and gives two faces to the impact Nelson Mandela had on the lives of his people.

“He was just like our god on Earth,” Coco recalled.

“People had not seen a black man who was a lawyer,” said Noah.

Before apartheid came to an end, Mandela himself was a representation of what Black Africans could strive for.

Touching on the title of Noah’s 2016 memoir, Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, the pair recalled that when he was born, Noah’s very existence as a biracial child in South Africa was illegal. Mandela’s flight not only gave black South Africans a new set of rights but legitimized Noah’s existence in the eyes of the law.

No 2 Artwashing Apartheid

Ethics experts have consistently criticized these arrangements, arguing that they invite those seeking to influence the government to do so by attempting to enrich the president or his family members with favorable business opportunities.

Trump Jr. invested in the startup, a company that grows organic lettuce in a hydroponic greenhouse, last year, records show. Those records don’t state how much money — if any — Trump paid for his 7,500 shares. But the shares would have been worth about $650,000 at the end of last year, based on a formula used by another shareholder in a recent court filing. Neither Trump Jr. nor the company have disclosed his investment publicly. Trump Jr. obtained the stake through a limited liability company called MSMDF Agriculture LLC, which was set up by a Trump Organization employee last fall.

The key ethical question, said Virginia Canter, chief ethics lawyer at the nonprofit Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, is whether Beach’s involvement with Eden Green, and Trump Jr.’s investment in it, are based on the business merits — or on the possibility of cashing in on connections to power. “Why is Trump Jr. being given this opportunity?” she asked. “It definitely has the appearance of trying to gain access by any means to curry favor with the administration.”

The willingness of Eden Green to invoke the Trump name in its business dealings raises further ethical concerns, experts said, particularly if potential customers understand that they are giving contracts to a startup whose success could enrich the president’s son.

Neither Trump Jr. nor his spokesman responded to messages seeking comment on his relationship with Beach and investment in Eden Green. A White House spokeswoman didn’t respond to emailed questions. Alan Garten, the Trump Organization’s top lawyer, said in a statement that Trump Jr.’s investment is a personal one. The entity through which it was made “is not owned or controlled by, or affiliated in any way with, The Trump Organization,” Garten said.

Last fall, Eden Green concluded a deal with Walmart. Today, the giant retailer sells the company’s lettuce, kale and other greens at about 100 stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. (Eden Green’s sole facility is a 44,023-square-foot greenhouse outside Fort Worth, where it grows the greens in 18-foot vertical tubes.)

Walmart interacts with government regulators on an array of matters — everything from labor practices and land use to securities filings — but there is no indication that Walmart is aware of Trump Jr.’s connection to Eden Green. (Separately, Walmart contributed $150,000 to Trump’s inaugural committee. Beach was a finance vice chair of that committee, but a Beach spokesman says he has never met with Walmart executives.)

Molly Blakeman, a Walmart spokeswoman, declined to comment on Eden Green or its investors. “We don’t talk about our relationships with our suppliers,” said Blakeman, who added that Walmart has “supported inaugural activities” in the past.

Andrew Kolvet, a spokesman for Beach and the other Eden Green executives, said it’s “categorically false” that the Trump name was invoked by Eden Green officials. Kolvet cited a corporate policy that forbids discussing investors “with any current or potential client.” He also said Trump Jr. isn’t involved with company operations and bought into Eden Green during “U.S. friends and family fundraising efforts.”

A recent lawsuit asserts that Eden Green is in financial trouble. In October, the company’s largest shareholder, an entity controlled by a wealthy oil and gas family from Midland, Texas, filed suit in state court in Dallas, alleging “gross project mismanagement.” The suit accused Beach and six executives, all of them board members, of paying themselves extravagant salaries (allegedly $250,000 to $300,000 per year) and putting the company “on the precipice of failure.” A financial consultant hired to examine the company’s books asserted that Eden Green executives spent more than $19.4 million in the first nine months of 2018 — a daunting sum for a company that reported having raised a total of $22 million as of June — while generating $9,000 in revenues.

In late November, less than a month after the suit was filed, it was settled on confidential terms. Kolvet disputed the compensation figures asserted in the litigation, saying that the company’s pay is “in accordance with industry standards.” He maintained that Eden Green’s prospects are good. As with many startups, he said, “things don’t go in a straight line.” Kolvet asserted that the company has plenty of operating cash.

Trump Jr., now 40, and Beach, now 43, met at the University of Pennsylvania two decades ago. Both are the sons of wealthy businessmen, one in real estate, one in oil and gas. Beach’s father has since been laid low: Last month he was sentenced to four months in federal detention, plus two years of supervised release, for bankruptcy fraud.

Beach was a groomsman at Trump Jr.’s wedding (Trump Jr. and his wife recently separated). Beach and Trump Jr. like to hunt and once considered buying a hunting preserve in Mexico together. According to a 2010 deposition testimony by Trump Jr., they talked business during lunches at Rothmann’s steakhouse in New York.

Both have struggled in business at times. In 2009, Trump Jr. and others (including one person who pleaded guilty to an unrelated criminal fraud charge in 2010) formed a company that would sell concrete panels for home constructions out of a warehouse in North Charleston, South Carolina. The business quickly became mired in lawsuits seeking payment for unpaid bills. Trump Jr. made the situation more precarious by personally guaranteeing a $3.7 million loan for the project. Days before the note was due, the Trump Organization purchased the debt, eventually taking over the warehouse and selling it all back to Trump Jr.’s original business partner, according to press accounts.

For his part, Beach’s career path has also included some travails. He spent a year or so at Enron and then moved into finance. Beach worked for a hedge fund and remains locked in litigation with it more than a decade later. (He claims he wasn’t paid his full compensation; the fund claims he was “responsible for the destruction of millions of dollars of investor capital.”) Beach now runs a “family office focused on private equity investments” out of a Dallas office that Eden Green uses as its corporate address.

Trump Jr. has at least twice before invested with Beach in deals that didn’t pan out. Trump Jr. put $200,000 in a dry Texas oil well managed by Beach’s father, according to testimony by Trump Jr. He also lost an unknown sum in a failed African mining company affiliated with Beach’s uncle.

But Trump Jr. stuck with his friend. The Associated Press reported this year that the two formed a company last October to pursue technology investments.

Then there was Eden Green. By the time Trump invested last fall, the company had already run into problems. It first launched in 2013 in South Africa with an ambitious mission: to feed the world through a highly efficient indoor farming system deploying patented technology intended to yield 10 to 12 harvests a year, compared with two or three for conventional agriculture.

There’s a market for vegetables grown in controlled greenhouse environments as big retailers increasingly push for cleaner, more reliable and locally grown alternatives. But the challenges are significant. Energy costs run high, and there are myriad difficulties associated with scaling up to an industrial-size system.

That’s what happened in Eden Green’s first iteration, according to a half dozen early backers and associates. The produce may have been sustainable — but the business model wasn’t. The CEO of its European unit wrote in an October 2017 email obtained by ProPublica that the company had “been bleeding money and resources for almost 2 years now.” In the fall of 2017, Eden Green’s founders cemented a deal to hand over majority control to a group of U.S. investors led by Beach, current and former business associates said.

This was the company Trump Jr. bought into. He used an innocuous-sounding limited liability company, called MSMDF Agriculture LLC, to make the investment. ProPublica discovered MSMDF after the Trump Organization listed it in New York City filings among dozens of other entities it controlled. (Because the Trump Organization has contracts with the city to run the Wollman skating rink in Central Park and a golf course in the Bronx, the city requires the company to file disclosures.) The Trump Organization told ProPublica that MSMDF is not in fact owned by the Trump Organization but was included in the disclosure form because it’s controlled by Trump Jr., who was described in the form as MSMDF’s president, secretary and treasurer.

MSMDF was formed by a Trump Organization employee in September 2017 in Delaware, according to incorporation papers. Eden Green Holdings UK, Ltd., an affiliate of the Texas-based company, then listed MSMDF among its roughly two dozen shareholders in a 2018 report filed with British regulators.

The Trump Jr.-Beach connection has been most visible in the political arena. Last year, for example, Trump Jr. publicly thanked Beach and their mutual friend Tommy Hicks Jr., another wealthy investor from Dallas, for their fundraising during the 2016 campaign. “We couldn’t have done it without you guys,” Trump Jr. said of his buddies to a crowd of Republican donors in March 2017. “It was just absolutely incredible.”

In the foreword to a recent book, Trump Jr. reiterated the message, writing that a “rag tag army” — Trump Jr., Beach, Hicks and Charlie Kirk, the firebrand chief of the pro-Trump organization, Turning Point USA — barnstormed the country in 2016, raising “over 150 million dollars in ninety days.”

Watch Donald Trump Jr. Thank Gentry Beach, Tommy Hicks Jr. for Trump Campaign Fundraising

Trump Jr. mentioned Beach and Hicks Jr. at a dinner hosted by the Dallas County Republicans in March 2017 and invested in Beach’s company Eden Green through an LLC created months after President Trump’s inauguration.

Since Trump’s election, Beach has met with top administration figures on multiple occasions. For example, according to the AP, he lobbied National Security Council officials to relax sanctions against Venezuela to create opportunities for U.S. companies. He attended a private lunch with Republican donors and Interior secretary Ryan Zinke.

Beach has denied leveraging his ties to the first family. Last month, Beach told a TV interviewer in Croatia, where he said he was exploring a “truly spectacular” $100 million real estate development, “I don’t need anything from the government, thankfully, except normal police protection in my hometown.”

But newly obtained emails show that Beach wanted government backing for his private business interests at the same time he was running Eden Green. In October 2017, Beach pitched Ray Washburne, who heads the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, a government agency that offers loans and guarantees to American companies looking to expand into emerging markets, according to emails obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. (Before joining OPIC, Washburne was a Dallas investor and a top fundraiser for Trump. He and Beach move in the same circles and have friends in common.)

“The Dominican Republic could really use some US investment and support,” Beach wrote in one email to Washburne, describing his various projects there, which included “a power plant upgrade to an existing tin mine” as well as liquid natural gas infrastructure. He invited OPIC officials to travel with him to the Dominican Republic “If permitted, we would be happy to handle all transportation from DC to DR and back,” he wrote in a follow-up note. (Such a trip never occurred, according to an OPIC spokesperson.)

A month later, the emails show, Beach also lobbied on another project, arranging a call with his business partner and one of Washburne’s top deputies regarding an “India Oppty,” which appeared to involve an energy fund. Separately, Beach also introduced Washburne to the head of oil giant Exxon Mobil’s Africa operations, with whom Beach said he had gone shooting at Blenheim Palace in England, where the Churchill family resided for three centuries. And Beach connected another Washburne aide with a South African mining executive who Beach described as “one of my partners.”

OPIC spokeswoman Amanda Burke said Beach has not submitted any formal applications for agency funding. “OPIC routinely meets with a variety of businesses and stakeholders,” she said, adding that formal applications trigger background and credit checks and “go through several levels of agency vetting and approval.”

Asked whether having a Trump connection would disqualify a person from receiving OPIC support, Burke emailed that “in general, an individual’s personal or legal business interests would not disqualify them from applying. However, certain relationships may cause board members or other decision makers of OPIC to be conflicted out of the decision-making process on potential projects.”

Sesame Workshop just got another $100 million to bring Muppets to refugee kids      Cache   Translate Page

In late 2017, Sesame and the International Rescue Committee earned an initial $100 million grant by winning the MacArthur Foundation’s inaugural 100&Change competition to create programming specifically designed for  Middle Eastern refugees from conflict zones in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria.

Now the Lego Foundation just gave Sesame Workshop another $100 million, doubling its funding for the project. The grant will allow Sesame to intensify its current work creating positive, play-based educational interventions for kids impacted by the Syrian conflict, and expand the program to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

This challenge, though, only continues to grow. In recent years, nearly 69 million people have been forcibly displaced from their homes, about half of whom are children. More than 25 million of those people have become registered refugees. And while there are many aid agencies focused on providing food and shelter, they can neglect the development of the youngest refugees. “The great irony is those who are impacted the most from displacement–young children–are receiving the least,” says Sherrie Westin, the president of global impact and philanthropy for Sesame Workshop.

“Less than three percent of all humanitarian aid goes to education, and a tiny sliver of that goes to early education,” she says. “And yet we know from all of the evidence–from brain science, from epigenetics, you name it–that the most critical time in a child’s development is in those first five years. And that when they experience traumatic events and exposure to prolonged stress, it literally debilitates their brain development.”

Sesame’s current plan for the Syrian response region of Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria, includes developing a culturally specific version of Sesame Street that will feature several new Muppets, some of whom may have backstories loosely mirroring the key issues facing that kids in that region: being uprooted, say, or learning to share your home. The group is also creating supplemental learning materials like storybooks that cover other topics, including why people bully and what it feels like to get bullied–from a kid’s perspective.

In Bangladesh, Sesame will work with BRAC to expand its network of so-called Play Labs that function as safe spaces for children. It will also create new programming, and likely build on the popularity of Sisimpur, a Bangladeshi version of the TV show. Given the mix of languages, Sesame plans to launch some animated, nonverbal content that could be easily used in other, yet unanticipated crises, as well.

While this is Lego’s first crisis response foray, the organization has worked alongside Sesame before in South Africa, India, and Mexico. In general, Sesame’s efforts align with Lego’s own philanthropic philosophy of encouraging learning through play. “The foundation very much deeply believes….that the best way children learn is when their hands and mind really get into a problem, when they can be joyful and playful in the way that they interact, and when they sing and dance and move and really have an active learning environment,” says Sarah Bouchie, vice president of the Lego Foundation.

While Sesame and Lego are still figuring out their exact programming, the grant doesn’t include any mandate to include tiny plastic building blocks. In several cases, that’s just plain impractical, because the number of people in need require solutions that scale easier (like broadcasts), or use household items to make games. “We will design content based on what we are learning the needs are,” says Westin. “Everything we do is based on real research about what is the most effective way to reach these children, and what is the greatest need.”

In addition to encouraging basic education, Sesame’s goal is to find more ways for caregivers to interact with kids, and at the same time give kids, especially ones who have experienced emotional and psychological trauma, a safe way to recognize and express how they are feeling. The success of those efforts will continue to be independently evaluated by Global TIES (Transforming Intervention Effectiveness and Scale) for Children, a research center based at New York University.

Lego will distribute the $100 million over a five-year period as specific goals are met. Bouchie and Westin both hope that seeing Lego double down on MacArthur’s bet will encourage more philanthropists to invest in similar interventions. Increasing the funding and ambition of one hopefully transportable and adaptable solution is a nice start. But it’ll take a lot more to ensure the world’s displaced children grow up healthy.

It’s deja vu for South Africa as a chronic power deficit plunges large tracts of the country into darkness and casts a pall over the already struggling economy. Eskom Holdings, which supplies most of the nation’s electricity, has instituted daily rolling blackouts since November 29 to avert a total collapse of the grid – as it did in 2008 and 2015.           India Australia Test Series Begins on Thursday      Cache   Translate Page

Story 11

NET Bureau

Australia vice-captain and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been dropped for the first test against India as selectors backed the team's three specialist seamers to bowl a full workload at Adelaide Oval.

India will pick their playing XI for the first Test against Australia from the 12 players which was announced on Wednesday.

Marsh's place in the side for the series-opener, which starts on Thursday, has been taken by middle order batsman Peter Handscomb, recalled for the first time since the tour of South Africa in March and April.

Despite scoring a century for Sheffield Shield side Western Australia in the leadup, Marsh pays the price for a poor tour of the United Arab Emirates where he managed 30 runs from four innings with the bat against Pakistan and two wickets at the cost of almost 100 runs with the ball.

“Mitch Marsh probably hasn't been as consistent as he would like and we would like,” captain Tim Paine told reporters at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday, confirming that Handscomb would bat fifth in the order with local favourite Travis Head at six.

“We know he’s good enough to be a genuine all-rounder at test level.

“The quicks are going to have a bowl a bit more and we have full faith that Nathan Lyon can do the job.”

Paine confirmed Marcus Harris would make his test debut and open the batting with Aaron Finch in the opener of the four-match series, Australia's first home test since Steve Smith and David Warner were banned over the Newlands ball-tampering scandal.

“Hes been a really consistent player for the last three years and thoroughly deserves the opportunity,” Paine said of Harris.

“He's an aggressive little player, hell play his shots but hes also improved his defence.”

Australia coach Justin Langer earlier confirmed that batsman Usman Khawaja would take his place in the side despite the arrest of his brother on charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice and forgery on Tuesday.

“We're keeping an eye on 'Uzzie', obviously it was a little bit of a shock for him yesterday,” Langer said on SEN radio.

“A lot of cricketers say this, but the actual sanctuary is out in the middle so while there's a lot going on in his personal life, we're all around him to support him.

“Hell be as cool and calm as usual out in the middle.”

With a scorching 39 degrees Celsius forecast for Adelaide on Thursday, Paine said Australia would be inclined to bat first if he won the toss against counterpart Virat Kohli.

“You want to bat on days when it's 40 degrees,” said the wicket-keeper.

“Normally, Australian teams like to bat first.”

Only a global alliance can reshape the regulatory regime to make it more democratic
Earlier this year, it was revealed that India is facing legal claims from international investors in as many as 23 arbitration cases, before various tribunals. These claims, worth billions of dollars, arise out of bilateral investment treaties between India and other states. One striking feature of such treaties is that they allow international investors (primarily MNCs) to initiate a dispute directly in an international tribunal, bypassing the state’s own constitutional system and its courts. Often, the disputes revolve around measures that were triggered by public health emergencies, economic crises or other matters directly involving public welfare — which would therefore be permissible under the Constitution, but which a corporation believes have negatively impacted its financial interests.

Transnational issues
This reveals an important truth about the contemporary, globalised world: issues that were earlier resolved within a sovereign state in accordance with its constitutional system have now acquired a transnational character. There are other contemporary examples: because of its attempts to make essential medicines affordable through amendments to its Patent Act, India has come under pressure from the U.S. and the European Union (at the behest of prominent pharmaceutical companies), while finding support and emulation in countries like South Africa and Thailand. Indeed, in 2011, the EU seized shipments of life-saving Indian drugs that were being transported to Africa and Latin America, on the basis that it could apply its more restrictive patent and customs laws to goods in transit through its territory.

Clearly, while global problems cannot be solved without nation-states, nation-states cannot solve their problems on their own. India’s battle to preserve affordable access to medicines is part of a larger struggle, where participation in the global intellectual property regime has severely constrained the ability of countries to respond to public health crises. Whatever a country’s Constitution may say about the right to life and the right to health for its citizens, it will still be dragged before an international tribunal if it attempts to forestall or mitigate a public health crisis by lifting patent restrictions upon, for example, a life-saving drug. The point is not only about who finally succeeds in litigation — rather, it is that the final decision is taken by a set of individuals who are beyond the structures of accountability that are established in democratic and constitutional states.

As pointed out above, the transnational character of these issues suggests that the response cannot succeed if it is unilateral. In the latest version of the model bilateral investment treaty drafted by India, for example, the scope of investor-state dispute settlement by international tribunals has been curtailed. But it takes many to tango: until the perils of bypassing national constitutional systems are accepted more broadly, individual attempts will fall short.

The issues are not limited to conflicts before international forums. Recent months have seen clashes between national regulatory authorities and the corporations that drive the new “gig economy”, such as Uber. In October, Uber and Ola drivers in Mumbai called for an indefinite strike over low pay, after a similar strike in Delhi earlier. In the U.K., the EU and various States in the U.S., there has been protracted and bitter litigation over the legal obligations that Uber owes to its drivers. The conflict may take different forms in different countries, but each time there are striking similarities, stemming from Uber’s business model, which is transnational in character. And, like in the case of investment treaties, it is often difficult for one country to tackle the problem alone – especially when the corporation is global in character, and can issue a credible threat of withdrawing substantial levels of investment. Nor is worker power, as long as it is confined within borders, and not trans-nationalised, sufficient to combat the power of MNCs.

The example of DiEM25
It is always helpful to look elsewhere, to see how people in other parts of the world have attempted to engage with such issues. A recent example is that of the Democracy in Europe Movement 25. DiEM25 arose after the debt crisis in Greece had resulted in a wide-ranging “structural adjustment programme” imposed upon that country by the European Commission, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund (or “the troika”). This included severe austerity measures (including cuts to public funding, resulting in mass unemployment) and widespread privatisation, in direct contravention of the publicly expressed will of the people, through both elections and a public referendum.

The central insight of DiEM25 — one of whose co-founders, Yanis Varoufakis, was Greece’s Finance Minister during the debt crisis — is precisely that today a progressive movement oriented towards social justice and fundamental rights cannot succeed if it is constrained within national borders. Many of the fundamental decisions that shape national policy (with wide-ranging consequences) are simply beyond the ken of nation-states themselves. For this reason, DiEM25 identifies as “pan-European”, and isolates a range of issues “currently left in the hands of national governments powerless to act upon them” — including public debt, banking, inadequate investment, migration, and rising poverty. In its manifesto, DiEM25 returns these issues to democratic control, but also acknowledges that the solutions needed to achieve this can only come from transnational action.

Another important insight of the DiEM25 manifesto is that the world today is based on “the reduction of all political relations into relations of power masquerading as merely technical decisions.” For example, what steps a country like India must take to ensure the availability of life-saving drugs (and not only during a public health crisis) is a decision that must be taken democratically and politically, within the constitutional framework. At present, however, it always remains ultimately subject to a “technical decision” (potentially taken by an international tribunal) about whether India has breached its obligations under an international intellectual property rights treaty regime. What needs to be done is to reshape that regime to make it more democratic, an effort that, by its very nature, cannot be undertaken by a single country.

The focus on democracy is particularly important with respect to a third issue: the increasing role of technology in our daily lives. This debate has come to the fore recently, with the long-running conflict over Aadhaar, and the draft DNA Profiling Bill. The relationship between technology and human freedoms will be vital in the future. It is therefore particularly interesting that, through the evolving concept of “technological sovereignty”, DiEM25 has drawn a specific link between technology and democracy, which can help us think through contemporary issues such as platform monopolies, the ubiquity of AI in public decision-making (including on public welfare), etc.

An international new deal
In September, writing for The Guardian, U.S. politician Bernie Sanders called for a “progressive international”: “an international progressive movement that mobilizes behind a vision of shared prosperity, security and dignity for all people, and that addresses the massive global inequality that exists, not only in wealth but in political power.” Mr. Varoufakis responded to this by calling for an “international new deal”. Movements such as DiEM25, which have sprung up in various parts of the world, serve as potential blueprints and models for what a “progressive international” may look like. It is a conversation that progressive movements in India must take heed of, and engage with, if we are to adequately address the transnational problems that face us today.

"But, by 2021, some White and Businless elites will see the disaster that they face ….." Did they see the danger in Venezuela? Chavez came to power and destroyed them. So, don't count out human stupidity and shortsightedness. In the midst of crisis, humans have a tendency to embrace the fantasy (probably a psychological defense mechanism) that their enemy will collapse in front of them at the last moment before destruction: the Athenians thought Sparta would fall before Athens did, WW2 Germany embraced delusions of divisions that didn't exist, and Americans once claimed China would collapse before ascending to global preeminence...all wrong. From the comment above: "Within 20 years, someone like Alexandria Cortez will take over just as Hugo Chavez did in Venezuela and destroy the tech industry through diversity quotas and the coal industry through carbon emissions limitations, putting Red States into the poor house permanently and the economy into a Latin American death spiral." And guys like Tim Cook will be presented with a medal for it, too. Humans have a remarkable capacity for self-destruction. These people will destroy themselves and feel "moral" for having done it. "can Trump get a left wing 3rd party candidate to run to split the anti-T vote?" I'd be more worried about a Gary Johnson type helping the democrats. Trump isn't the 4D chess player his fan base thinks he is. "TRUMP IS MOST PROBABLY THE LAST REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT." True. His election was a minor miracle, as I pointed out to Sailer and others. But even on his blog they ignored those facts and proceeded apace to think their civnat strategy was going to bear fruit with Trump any day. Nope. They should have treated this as an extraordinary opportunity to overthrow the old order like Franco did. But republicans ignored that and went with tax cuts for the rich, more mass immigration, and sanctions on Iran. When even otherwise smart people act stupid, we are doomed. "Or, perhaps their primary process will be so transparently corrupt that new voters stay home." I wouldn't count on it. The ANC wins every election in South Africa, for the most part, despite massive corruption and incompetence; their third largest party calls for genocide against their racial enemies and steals their lands. Having a mass of low IQ racists who vote their tribe's short-term interests over abstract policy proposals that will only come to fruition years or decades hence does wonders for societal decay. America will get a lighter version of that in the near future, plus all the police state stuff.

We Need A Little Christmas! Dave Koz And Friends CHRISTMAS TOUR 2018 Comes To The McCallum.      Cache   Translate Page

The McCallum Theatre presents Dave Koz & Friends "Christmas Tour 2018" on Tuesday, December 18, at 8:00pm as part of the Fitz's Jazz Café at the McCallum series. A holiday tradition returns to the McCallum as Dave Koz and Friends Christmas Tour 2018 brings together a magical combination of musicians to celebrate this special season. Celebrated saxophonist Koz will be joined by special guests Mindi Abair, Jonathan Butler and Keiko Matsui performing their hits and jamming on fresh, lively arrangements of seasonal favorites in a high-energy show for the entire family.

DAVE KOZ
In a career that spans more than three decades, saxophonist Dave Koz has racked up nine Grammy nominations, nine #1 albums on Billboard's Current Contemporary Jazz Albums chart, numerous world tours, playing for multiple Presidents, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and more.

Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, Dave picked up the saxophone as a way to join his brother's band. After earning his degree in mass communications from UCLA, Koz made the decision to become a professional musician. Within weeks, he was a touring member of Bobby Caldwell's band. Koz befriended Jeff Lorber who invited him to play on one of his tours. That stint was followed by a fourteen-month tour with Richard Marx.

Koz released his self-titled debut album in 1990, the first of many best-sellers, including Lucky Man (1993); Off the Beaten Path (1996); December Makes Me Feel This Way (1997); The Dance(1999); A Smooth Jazz Christmas (2001); Saxophonic (2003); At the Movies (2007); Memories Of A Winter's Night (2007); Hello Tomorrow (2010); Summer Horns (2013); 20th Anniversary Christmas (2017); and Summer Horns II (2018).

Outside of recording and performing, Koz is busy with other projects. Late in 2017, Koz appeared as himself in a Hallmark movie called Sharing Christmas which used music from the 20th Anniversary Christmas album. Then, there is the Dave Koz & Friends at Sea Cruise. Koz also co-owns a restaurant in Los Angeles called Citizen. And, he hosts two radio programs: "The Dave Koz Radio Show," on the air for close to 25 years, and "The Dave Koz Lounge" which can be heard on SiriusXM. Koz works with the Starlight Children's Foundation which helps kids who are hospitalized for long periods of time and their families. And, he's made a wine for close to 10 years called Koz Wine that raises money specifically for Starlight; sales of the wine have raised well over a half a million dollars for Starlight. Koz completed a four-year term on the Grammy Foundation Artists Committee and has served as National Trustee for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS).

Koz returns to the road this holiday season for his 21st annual "Dave Koz Christmas Tour 2018." Joining Dave this year are Mindi Abair, pop/blues saxophonist/singer who will be making her first Christmas Tour appearance; South African guitarist/singer, Jonathan Butler, who returns for another wonderful time with Dave; and Japanese keyboard sensation Keiko Matsui. The tour, now in its 21st year, has received nationwide critical acclaim since its 1997 inception.

"Always front and center is the music. It's humbling, this many years in such a fickle business, to still have a career, still be able to go out and tour and make records," Koz says. "Music has been such a blessing to me, and we need it more than ever today."

MINDI ABAIR
One of the most recognized saxophonists/vocalists, two-time Grammy nominee Mindi Abair has been electrifying audiences with her live performances and command of the saxophone since her debut album in 2000. She has garnered ten #1 radio hits, six Top 5 solo records, and two #1 spots on the Billboard album charts. In 2014, after two seasons as the featured saxophonist on "American Idol," Mindi released Wild Heart. This LP showcased a compilation of grittier rock and soul tracks featuring some of the biggest names in music. To help translate this sound to her live shows, Mindi enlisted longtime friend and The Boneshakers founder Randy Jacobs to inject his brand of Detroit Blues Rock. The collaboration was undeniable and it led to a decision to join forces creatively. Mindi Abair and The Boneshakers LIVE in Seattle was released in 2015 to critical acclaim and a 2½ year non-stop tour schedule. In 2017, the band released their first studio record, The EastWest Sessions, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart. The band won 8 Independent Blues Awards including Artist of the Year. Mindi authored the book How To Play Madison Square Garden - A Guide to Stage Performance and serves as a National Trustee for The Recording Academy. The artists she's toured with and/or recorded with are a testament to her talent, including Aerosmith, Smokey Robinson, Duran Duran, Adam Sandler, Lee Ritenour, The Backstreet Boys, Booker T. Jones, Jimmy Webb, Mandy Moore, Max Weinberg, Teena Marie, Bobby Lyle, and Jonathan Butler.

JONATHAN BUTLER
Jonathan grew up in the townships of South Africa and started singing and playing guitar at age seven. He released his first album in 1973 and won the "Best New Artist" Grammy in South Africa the following year at age 12. Jonathan's premiere single became the first by a black artist to be played on white radio stations in South Africa. He earned three Gold records in 1975 as he became a teenager. His first international album went Gold in 1987. He received Grammy nominations for Best R&B Song for "Lies" and for Best Jazz Song for the instrumental "Going Home." His 2004 album Surrender went Gold in South Africa. Jonathan's albums and worldwide concert tours have afforded him a lifestyle far from what he ever could have imagined, but more importantly, it brought him the freedom to follow his passion for music on his own terms. He launched the Jonathan Butler Foundation in South Africa, serving children aged 4-17, to fund music education programs. Jonathan is a powerful performer in headline dates, festival shows and music cruises. He thrives on interacting with his fans, and for the past four years, has led a group of 35 guests each fall on the Jonathan Butler Safari, sharing his South Africa by visiting landmarks in his life and historic locales, including Robben Island prison where Nelson Mandela was jailed. When Jonathan Butler sings, he testifies to the glory and healing power of love. When he plays guitar, his fast fingers innately find notes of passion and divinity.

[UK], Dec 5 (ANI): Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez will bid adieu to the Test cricket after their ongoing third and last match against New Zealand at Abu Dhabi.

The 38-year-old reasoned that he wants to focus more on the limited-over format especially the 2019 cricket World Cup.

"Today, I want to announce my retirement from the Test-match format so that I can focus my energies on playing for Pakistan in the white-ball formats. I am eyeing to represent Pakistan in the ICC World Cup next year. I feel honoured that I represented the country in 55 Test matches, including the opportunity of captaining the team. I feel satisfied that I performed to the best of my abilities in my 15 year-long Test career," ESPNcricinfo quoted Hafeez, as saying.

"I wish the Test team the very best for their upcoming assignments starting with the tour to South Africa, the team management especially the coach and captain have worked very hard in forming an exciting core of players that can serve for long," he added.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ehsan Mani applauded the right-hand batsman for giving some "memorable" and "match-winning" performances.

"Hafeez gave some memorable and matching-winning performances for Pakistan in the Test match format. He lent great balance to the XI with his bowling abilities," Mani said.

Hafeez has played a total of 55Test matches scoring 3644 runs with an average of 37.96 along with scalping 53 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 2.67. (ANI)

India have rested their hopes on the likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Murali Vijay to tackle the Australian pacers on the bouncy tracks.

In the bowling department, India have opted for three specialist pacers - Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, while Ravichandran Ashwin will be at the helm of the spin attack.

Following is the 12-member Indian squad for the Adelaide Test:

Virat Kohli (C), Ajinkya Rahane (VC), KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah.

Belgium's Antoine Kina, Canada's Floris Van Son set to join Hockey WC      Cache   Translate Page

[India], Dec 4 (ANI): Belgium and Canada hockey teams on Tuesday were forced to make changes to their respective Pool C squads in the ongoing Men's Hockey World Cup at the Kalinga Stadium due to injuries to their key players.

Defender Emmanuel Stockbroekx, who sustained a hamstring injury during Belgium's 2-2 draw with India, will be replaced by Antoine Kina, who has 29 caps to his name. Kina was a member of the Belgium U-21 team that went onto claim the silver medal at the Junior World Cup in Lucknow two years ago.

Meanwhile, Canada's Brandon Pereira has also withdrawn through injury, with Floris van Son stepping into the fray. Forward Van Son, who has only 26 caps, has been part of the Canadian squad that competed in last year's Hockey World League Semi-Final in London, the 2017 Pan American Cup in Lancaster and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

As both Belgian and Canadian sides have sought approval from the International Hockey Federation (FIH), Kina and Van Son will be involved in their team's final Pool C matches on December 8, with Belgium facing South Africa and Canada taking on India respectively. (ANI)

How 10 Orphans From eSwatini Helped Write A Prize-Winning Movie      Cache   Translate Page
Liyana may just be the first film in which a group of orphans make up the plot. The original intent of the filmmakers, Aaron and Amanda Kopp, was to make a documentary about children in the New Life Homes orphanage in eSwatini (formerly known as Swaziland). Aaron grew up in eSwatini and had met some of the youngsters before he started filming in 2010. But when the Kopps started on their movie, they had a realization – these kids could make up their own story. And so that's what happened. Ten of the orphans, ages 9 to 12, created a character named Liyana and sent her on an adventure. They were guided by South African storyteller Gcina Mhlophe . The movie is a curious hybrid – there are brief scenes of the real orphans working to tell their story, interspersed with animated segments about Liyana, who lives in a stick and mud house that's painted blue. Clad in a sunny yellow dress, Liyana embarks on a perilous quest to save her younger brothers from thieves who've kidnapped them . She

GroupM reveals 2018-19 ad investment forecast      Cache   Translate Page

MUMBAI: GroupM, the investment group of WPP Media, has revealed its updated 2018-19 ad investment forecasts. The growth projections for 2019 are also mentioned from 3.9 per cent to 3.6 per cent, with total new investment anticipated to reach Rs 1.33 lakh crore ($19 billion) instead of the Rs 1.61 lakh crore ($23 billion) earlier predicted.

The group revealed that the recent US dollar appreciation versus just about every other currency led to the suppression of the predicted growth. Stress on the auto category stood out in feedback from GroupM’s worldwide network, as did the absence of any rebound in CPG investment with traditional media.

While China remains the largest contributor to the group, 2019 will be its sixth successive year with single-digit ad growth and mark its lowest growth rate yet recorded. Following China, the other top contributors are USA and India. India is expected to contribute Rs 9500 crore ($1.35 billion) of growth.

GroupM futures director Adam Smith said, “GroupM’s still strong but slightly fraying 2018 view ties to macro questions: tighter money, China’s slowing growth, and the potential for pricey trade wars.”

He added, “Real interest rates are edging up globally, but serious potential problems remain limited to a fragile five – Argentina, South Africa, Brazil, Turkey, and Venezuela.”

GroupM forecasts that ten countries will provide 83 per cent of all 2019 growth.

An RE developer and lobbyist reacted to my paper, "Corrupted science to justify renewables cronyism". He wrote again to oped editor and his paper was published by BWorld. My reply to this in my next post.

By Eddie O’Connor

MR. Bienvenido S. Oplas, Jr. writes in his Oct. 10 column, “Corrupted science to justify renewables cronyism,” “if wind-solar are indeed that cheap, then will the lobby agree to (a) abolish the priority and mandatory dispatch of wind-solar to the grid, and (b) abolish the feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme of guaranteed high price for wind-solar, other variable REs for 20 years?”

Of course, the developers of wind and solar agree to abolish mandatory dispatch. So long as the system dispatchers continue with the practice of dispatching the next batch of electricity at the lowest marginal price, wind and solar will always be dispatched first. The marginal price of wind and solar is zero. Every system dispatcher in the world dispatches the lowest marginal cost first. Remember that once plants are built every marginal unit of coal costs circa $3.5+ cents depending on efficiency. A unit of electricity from a wind and solar plant, once built, costs 0.

Regarding abolishing the feed-in-tariff. It is not hard to agree to this, as it is already abolished. Thank God. Now perhaps we will get a chance to compete head to head with dirty coal. We can then do what has been done in South Africa, Chile, Mexico, and everywhere auctions are run and hammer coal into oblivion.

Mr. Oplas seems to be unaware that in an experiment conducted in the Royal Institution in London in 1861, the great Irish scientist, John Tyndell, passed radiation through a series of gases and observed that CO2 CH4 and H2O, absorbed radiation while oxygen and nitrogen did not. This experiment is easy to replicate, and any university to which Mr. Oplas has access, can replicate it.

I apologize to non-technical readers for the following but it is the real science which has driven the world to sign the Paris accord.

All radiation is quantized. These quanta, or packages of solar radiation, only interact with certain molecules, whose electrons can be jumped to a more energetic orbital. They then fall back releasing an increment of heat.

The chart here shows the heat buildup due to the absorption of radiation by greenhouse gases (see chart).

The slope of the global heat accumulation graph tells us how rapidly the Earth’s climate is building up heat. Over the past decade, the rate is 8 x 1021 Joules per year, or 2.5 x 1014 Joules per second. The yield of the Hiroshima atomic bomb was 6.3 x 1013 Joules, hence the rate of global heat accumulation is equivalent to about 4 Hiroshima bomb detonations per second.

The data comes from peer-reviewed research (Church et al. 2011) and has also been confirmed by more recent research (i.e. Balmaseda et al. 2013).

That’s nearly 2.7 billion atomic bomb detonations worth of heat accumulating in the Earth’s climate system since 1998, when we’re told global warming supposedly “paused.” That has to be the worst pause ever.

Again let me reiterate. I am alarmed, indeed, devastated by the disappearance of some 60% of species by 2020 due to global warming. I am similarly saddened to observe that even if we can limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees we lose 90% of all the corals in the oceans.

There were those who persisted in believing that the earth was flat for hundreds of years after it was demonstrated by Ferdinand Magellan to be round. I am afraid that Mr. Oplas is a latter day flat earther for denying climate science. Delighted to debate on my next visit in May 2019.

Broadband As Social Determinant of Health – Microsoft’s Plan to Bolster Rural Access      Cache   Translate Page

In the U.S., the highest levels of unemployment are in places that often have the lowest access to broadband connectivity. And, “without a proper broadband connection, these communities can’t start or run a modern business, access telemedicine, take an online class, digitally transform their farm, or research a school project online,” Microsoft President Brad Smith said yesterday as the company announced their continued commitment to expanding broadband in rural America. Microsoft is expanding a program the company launched last year to address the rural broadband gap in the U.S. The Airband Initiative is working from Northwest Georgia to South Africa to bolster partnerships to connect agriculture, education, health, and other sectors in areas under-served by broadband. In 2017, Airband was working with 16 U.S. states; the program will expand to 25 states in 2019. There’s an important backstory to this initiative that has important health and public policy implications. Microsoft has been studying the Federal FCC data on broadband access in America. The company’s findings have led Smith to write in his company blog on 3rd December that, “we’ve learned that an effective solution to this problem requires targeted but limited public sector help.” He asserts that there’s evidence that the proportion of Americans without access to broadband is much higher than the FCC data has shown. “We’ve seen this over the past 17 months in many places and in many ways, including by talking directly to the people who live in rural America. Their real-world lack of broadband access differs sharply from the picture too often painted by inaccurate data in Washington, D.C.,” Smith writes. Microsoft’s position is that the federal government broadband data estimates are doubtful, finding that rural broadband estimates calculated by the Pew Research Group are “far closer to the mark,” Smith concludes. “All of this leaves us with the inescapable conclusion that today there exists no accurate public estimate of broadband coverage in the United States.” Health Populi’s Hot Points:  The map graphic, copied from Microsoft’s Top Ten Tech Issues for 2018, attests that expanding tech in rural communities will “ensure a fair shot for everyone.” People who live in rural America also tend to have poorer health outcomes — largely due to those social determinants that build, or diminish, health. Education, financial and job security, access to nutritious food, transportation, and access to healthcare all bolster individual and community health. The broadband gap is generally reflective of health disparities in rural America. When we consider “health reform,” broadly, it’s not just about hospitals and doctors and drug prices. Investing in the infrastructure and bases for healthy communities would go a long way to improving health status, and in the long game, conserve medical care spending. “We all need to move faster. It took 50 years to electrify the nation. The millions of Americans waiting for broadband don’t have the luxury of time,” Smith concludes his essay.

South Africa Urges Increased Support for Developing Countries in Fighting Climate Change
Xinhua
2018/12/4 10:36:37

South Africa on Monday called for increased support for developing countries in fighting climate change.

South African Environmental Affairs Minister Nomvula Mokonyane made the appeal as she announced South Africa's participation in the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP24) in Katowice, Poland.

"The Katowice Conference should include taking stock of work required to fully implement the Paris Agreement, provide assurances that the political balance of the Paris Agreement is upheld, and that all issues of importance to developing countries will be addressed in the rule-book to be adopted," said Mokonyane.

The focus at COP24 should be on ensuring that commitments by developed countries in the pre-2020 period, including the provision of 100 billion US dollars per annum in climate finance to developing countries by 2020, are honored, the minister said.

COP24 is a critical milestone towards the success of the multilateral approach to addressing climate change at a time when such an approach is being opposed by the United States and further undermined by backtracking on commitments by several other developed countries, Mokonyane said.

The international climate change talks started on Sunday and will last until Dec. 14 under the presidency of Poland.

The mandate of the Katowice Climate Conference is to adopt the Paris Agreement Work Program, setting out the implementation guidelines required to operationalize the Paris Agreement in 2020.

The Conference will also host ministerial-level events, including the Talanoa Dialogue, which aims to raise ambition and accelerate action to address climate change, as well as dialogues on financial support for developing countries and implementation of the pre-2020 agenda under the convention and its Kyoto Protocol.

South Africa has identified a number of priorities for COP24 where it is important to ensure the technical needs and requirements of nations to mitigate and adapt to climate change are comprehensively negotiated.

In 2015, South Africa joined 196 countries in ratifying the Paris Agreement, which came into effect on Nov. 4, 2016.

South African National Assembly Approves Process to Amend Constitution for Land Reform
Xinhua
2018/12/5 8:30:38

The National Assembly (NA), or Lower House of Parliament, agreed on Tuesday that section 25 of the Constitution be amended to make land expropriation without compensation more explicit.

In a sitting, the NA voted in favor of a report submitted in mid-November by Parliament's Joint Constitutional Review Committee (JCRC) which recommends that section 25 of the Constitution be amended to make it explicitly clear that expropriation of land without compensation by the state in the public interest should be one mechanism to address the injustices of the past, inflicted on the majority of South Africans.

The report was approved by 209 lawmakers, while 91 others have voted "No", with no abstentions.

Speaking in the debate before the vote, Vincent Smith, MP of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), said the party believes that the land reform project "is about healing the wounds of the past, restoring our dignity, reclaiming our identity and unlocking the economic resources of our country."

"Without land redistribution, we will never achieve a united South Africa," he said.

Thandeka Mbabama, MP of the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA), said the DA acknowledges that effective land reform must be prioritized and pursued with greater urgency to redress past land dis-possessions, but to address this, "we do not need to change the Constitution, we need to change the government."

"Let us be clear: effective land reform is possible without threatening food security, without undermining commercial farming, without destroying social cohesion and without changing our Bill of Rights," Mbabama said.

The report now goes to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), or Upper House of Parliament, for consideration. If the NCOP approves the report, a bill, which will legalize land expropriation without compensation, may be introduced.

Details of the bill would have to be published in the Government Gazette at least 30 days before it is introduced. This is to allow for public comment.

The NA may consider and vote on the bill only after at least 30 days have passed since its introduction.

Once the legislative process is completed, the bill will be submitted to the President to be signed into law.

RBI keeps repo rate unchanged at 6.5 pct      Cache   Translate Page

Mumbai: In view of the "current and evolving macroeconomic situation" in the country, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Wednesday decided to keep the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 6.5 per cent. The decision was taken at the fifth bi-monthly meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the RBI.

"On the basis of an assessment of the current and evolving macroeconomic situation at its meeting today, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to keep the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 6.5 per cent," said the RBI in a press statement issued after the meeting.

The repo rate is the rate at which the Central bank of India lends money to commercial banks in the event of any shortfall of funds, and which is also used by the monetary authorities to control inflation.

"Consequently, the reverse repo rate under the LAF remains at 6.25 per cent, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the bank rate at 6.75 per cent. The decision of the MPC is consistent with the stance of calibrated tightening of monetary policy in consonance with the objective of achieving the medium-term target for consumer price index (CPI) inflation of 4 per cent within a band of +/-2 per cent, while supporting growth," the RBI further said in the statement.

According to RBI, since the last MPC meeting in October 2018, global economic activity has shown increasing signs of weakness on rising trade tensions. Among advanced economies (AEs), economic activity appears to be slowing in the US in Q4:2018, after a buoyant Q3. The Euro area growth lost pace in Q3, impacted by weaker trade growth and new vehicle emission standards. The Japanese economy contracted in Q3 on subdued external and domestic demand.

"Economic activity also decelerated in major emerging market economies (EMEs) in Q3. In China, growth slowed down on weak domestic demand. The ongoing trade tensions and the possible cooling of the housing market pose major risks to growth in China. The Russian economy lost some traction, pulled down largely by a weak agriculture harvest, though the growth was buttressed by the strong performance of the energy sector," the RBI further said.

"The Brazilian economy seems to be recovering gradually from the economic disruption in the first half of the year. The South African economy expanded in Q3, after contracting in the previous two quarters, driven by agriculture and manufacturing. Crude oil prices have declined sharply, reflecting higher supplies and easing of geopolitical tensions," added the RBI.

"The base metal prices have continued to decline on selling pressure following weak demand from major economies. Gold price has risen underpinned by safe-haven demand triggered by political uncertainty in some geographies, though a strong dollar may stem the rise. The inflation scenario has remained broadly unchanged in the US and the Euro area," said the RBI.

Netstar raises R155 000 for Hearing Impaired      Cache   Translate Page
Tue, 12/04/2018

Netstar, a subsidiary of JSE-listed technology giant Altron, has raised R155,000 for eDeaf, a black woman owned entity that is focused on training and empowering the Deaf . The money was raised at Netstar’s Charity Golf Day held at the Els Club in Centurion.
Netstar is engaged in a number of activities to empower people living with disabilities. This includes a long-standing learnership programme for the deaf which provides deaf learners with the opportunity to develop meaningful careers and expand their skills in the formal job sector. As a result of this programme, Netstar recently employed 11 hearing-impaired individuals as part of its diversity strategy. Prior to becoming full-time employees, the group of learners was supporting the fleets of major truck and bus operators in South Africa as part of a 12-month learnership programme which began in August 2017.

According to Pierre Bruwer, Managing Director of Netstar, “One of the values driving us as part of the Altron Group is embracing diversity and inclusion and our partnership with eDeaf enables us to directly participate in an initiative that improve opportunities for those who previously felt marginalised due to a disability in our society. This time we  brought the charity element into this year’s customer golf day to further support the excellent work that organisations like eDeaf are doing. It also created awareness for their cause amongst our customers and suppliers. Their kind generosity, with the support of our MC and long-time traffic partner, Aki Anastasiou, enabled us to exceed our initial target of R 100,000 for which we are very grateful,” said Bruwer.
According to Nazareen Captieux-Bhana, CEO at eDeaf, the organisation was established in 2007 with the aim of creating change, a change that is systematic, sustainable and for the benefit and upliftment of the deaf community in South Africa. “Partnering with the private sector is one way in which we are able to ensure the sustainable employment of the Deaf. Being Deaf myself, has given me a far greater insight into the needs of the deaf community and being supported by organisations like Netstar goes a long way in ensuring that the Deaf  become valuable members of society.”

Referring to the initiative for people living with disabilities, Bruwer had this to say: “Today, our team of Deaf individuals are now fully qualified monitoring agents. Their monitoring and surveillance abilities are world-class, providing safety and security for drivers and other road users. Their efforts are realising cost savings for many customers, including some who were at the golf event.”

The money raised from the golf day will be used for various projects at eDeaf. This includes the purchase of much needed computer equipment, technical training and funding towards a new bus for candidates and contract teams.

Courtesy of Diego López Dominguez , Southern Ocean along the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica.

Spain's Diego López Dominguez is finally home in New York City after 20 days on the road for his Antarctica trip where he was one of 14 swimmers who successfully completed the International Ice Swimming Association-sanctioned Antarctica Ice Kilometer Swim, finishing third overall in 12:40:90 in the -1.2°C water in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica.

"It has - no doubt - been one of the most, if not the most, amazing experiences in my life, swimming and otherwise.

The conditions, as you heard from Jean Craven and Ram Barkai, were harsh and dynamic throughout the trip. We were basically on standby for the whole trip.

However, it was extremely helpful and inspiring to be in a group, with such a team of incredible ice swimmers from all over the world. Individual success meant nothing until we all finished and returned home with a 14 out of 14 score.

Swimming an Ice Kilometer in -1.2°C water with strong winds and non-stop snow in the open water while sorting icebergs is not easy. And if you add the magic and intimidating landscape of Antarctica, it becomes a really unique experience. Results are very relative, but I was honored to share the heat – and the overall podium with Petar Stoychev and Victoria Mori. What two amazing competitors they are.

Antarctica was my last swim of the year and of the Continents Seven project. It has been an incredible and enriching year that will change my life forever
."

12. Ned Denison (Ireland/USA)
13. Rohan More (India)
14. Vladimir Mravec (Slovakia/Australia)

Ed Sheeran & Beyoncé Sparked Hilarious Memes Over Their Sartorial Differences      Cache   Translate Page
[Click here to view the video in this article]

Ed Sheeran is making waves on social media due to his onstage ensemble—but not for the right reason.

Sheeran together with superstar Beyoncé made an appearance at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 held in South Africa. The duo sang the hit song Perfect, and the audience was quick to notice that their stage outfits weren’t quite in sync.

Beyoncé appeared on stage in a sculptural fuchsia gown, while Sheeran only wore a black t-shirt layered on top of a white long-sleeved t-shirt and jeans.

The sartorial difference was hard to ignore and it instantly became the talk of the town. One Twitter user hilariously wrote, “Ed Sheeran is actually wearing a 3-piece custom tuxedo. That’s just what white people always look like standing next to Beyoncé.” Other Twitter users came out with funny memes that you need to check out below.

A Fan Compared The Lion King 2019 To The 1994 Disney Animation Side By Side

One thousand nine hundred ninety-four was a big year. It was when Nelson Mandela became the President of South Africa, The Channel Tunnel between England and France opened after six years of construction, and, of course, Disney released The Lion King film, which eventually became the highest-grossing animated movie ever (now, fourth).

During the NFL’s traditional Thanksgiving primetime game in the United States, the company released the first teaser trailer of its remake, that is scheduled to come out in the summer of 2019, and everyone is losing their minds.

Many fans were incredibly happy to hear it is narrated by James Earl Jones, that plays king Mufasa in both the 1994 original and next year’s film. However, the most impressive thing about the teaser is how beautiful the visuals look.

To demonstrate how much technology has advanced over the past 24 years, somebody has even created a video that compares shots from the two releases side by side. Scroll down until the end to see the video comparison.

Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran and our expectations of men and women      Cache   Translate Page
The pair performed a duet at a festival but while Beyoncé looked magical, Sheeran dressed like he had come from a lock-in at the student union

Why are people upset about the photos of Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran performing together? Michael, by email

Ahh, to see a world in a grain of sand, as William Blake wrote. Just possibly, he was not referring to Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé, but also he possibly was. Who are we to impose limitations on genius? Anyway, last weekend, two of the biggest pop stars in the world, Beyoncé and Sheeran – Sheyoncé? Beeran? – performed Sheeran’s song Perfect together at the Global Citizen festival: Mandela 100 in South Africa. To use a rather au courant phrase, the optics were bad. There was Sheeran, looking as he always does, as if he just got out of a lock-in at the student union, and there was Beyoncé, looking as she always does, like a magical fairy queen from the land of Oz. She was wearing an extraordinary couture dress by the Lebanese label Ashi Studio that was really more ruffle than gown, on which the low-key part was the multi-layered extra-long train behind her. But, in case you are worried that all this frill and fabric meant Bey’s body was covered, allow me to put your mind at rest: beneath the ruffles was a mini-dress that was left frill-free at the front, so we could gaze upon Beyoncé’s thighs and cleavage. On top of that, there were the obligatory high heels, makeup and hair that looked as if it took at least four hours to style, and giant earrings. She looked, as ever, absolutely amazing.

Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran photo says everything about expectations put on black women versus white men      Cache   Translate Page

A photo of the two artists performing at South Africa’s Global Summit sparked a debate about how women are expected to look and what it all means.

By now, you have likely seen the internet outrage over the contrast between Beyoncé’s dramatic onstage look at South Africa’s Global Summit compared to Ed Sheeran’s trademark scruffy skater uniform. The whole thing serves as a metaphor for the amount of effort expected of black women compared to white men. Or as my former colleague Rich Bellis brilliantly put it: “Imagine Beyoncé trying to be Beyoncé while dressing like Avril Lavigne. You can’t! It’s impossible!” (It should be noted that while Lavigne was at the height of her fame and commercial success during her “Sk8er” look phase, she is now considerably more glam.)

India in Australia: Can Indian batsmen support Virat?      Cache   Translate Page
In the penultimate nets ahead of the first Test in Adelaide, Indian pacers didn't hold back against their own batsmen. Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah let the ball fly on Tuesday afternoon, perhaps they were under instruction from the team management given the likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are waiting for day one of the series.

It was a strange sight, seeing Indian batsmen struggled against their own pacers. KL Rahul was bowled by Bumrah and struggled for timing against the other pacers. Vijay also had to duck a few times and was even hit on the helmet once. It made for a worrisome sight ahead of the first Test for the Indian team that has been beset with opening problems throughout the South Africa and England series.

On those two tours, the Indian team management used four different opening combinations, counting Vijay-Parthiv Patel who opened once in Johannesburg. Overall, Vijay batted thrice with Rahul and twice with Shikhar Dhawan, who has beendropped from the Test side at present. Rahul-Dhawan opened in three Tests in England as well, but the result wasn't considerably different.

In three Tests in South Africa, India's opening pairs averaged only 18.16. In five Tests in England, the opening pairs averaged 23.70. It doesn't help the middle order in overseas conditions if your number three batsman is walking out to bat with less than 50 runs on the board. Not to mention, the Indian middle order hasn't been too impressive either.

Cheteshwar Pujara scored 100 runs in three Tests in South Africa and 278 runs in five Tests in England (only 146 runs in seven innings there). Ajinkya Rahane scored 257 runs in five Tests, but there is an expectation of big knocks from him. He failed to convert his half-centuries in Nottingham and Southampton. Rohit Sharma, for whom Rahane was dropped in South Africa, managed only 78 runs in four innings against the Proteas.

Only one name has stood out from the ruins of six defeats in eight Tests in South Africa and England. Virat Kohli amassed runs by the truckloads in both countries, so much so that the Indian batting has come to be known as increasingly dependent on him. There is an obsession with Kohli in Australia, yet this small fact hasn't goneunnoticed among the hosts' bowling attack.

At the time of writing, India had named their shortlist of twelve players for the first Test, with only four bowlers highlighted. It means there is a long batting order listed for the Adelaide Test with either Rohit Sharma or Hanuma Vihari batting at number six. Is this the right formula for team India going into this series? It is possibly a good idea to buffer the batting because the bowling attack has been doing consistently well in overseas conditions, and despite the absence of Hardik Pandya, four bowlers can theoretically get the job done.

It is a similar thought in the Australian dressing room as well, wherein they have dropped all-rounder Mitchell Marsh from the mix and sent him back to Shield cricket to regain some form for later use in the series. It is a decision based on form and fitness of their bowling attack – including Nathan Lyon no doubt – but it also makes for some wonderment.

In the absence of Steve Smith and David Warner, this Australian line-up will always be considered lightweight. Thus, by playing an extra batsman in Peter Handscomb, they have taken a safety-first approach, which perhaps is a bit unseen in the first Test of the Australian summer. Usually, they come at you, all guns blazing, on and off the field, in strategy and execution. Perhaps they still will, given the noise in the media already, if not so much on the field.

Yet, clearly in the planning stage, skipper Tim Paine feels it right to go with a safety net of an extra batsman so that things do not backfire in the first Test at home after ball-tampering scandal. What about the rest of their batting line-up?

Aaron Finch has only played two Tests in his career and will open with debutant Marcus Harris. It isn't a lot of experience, when you consider that middle-order batsman Travis Head (2 matches) hasn't played too much Test cricket either.

Paine himself has only played 15 Tests, while Handscomb has featured in another 13. That is a sum total of 32 Tests between five of their seven batsmen. Shaun Marsh (34 Tests) and Usman Khawaja (35 Tests) bring some semblance ofrespectability to this otherwise massively inexperienced Australian batting line-up. But here's the thing – even with such an underrated side, they are the hosts.

Playing at home, they are aware of conditions, bounce, how the pitches will behave and play out over five days. Basically, they have grown up playing all their entire cricket on these wickets. That factor alone perhaps adds 20 per cent. Can the Indian batting line-up – barring Kohli – do enough to cancel that out?

Line won't be crossed but competitiveness will remain: Kohli      Cache   Translate Page

Adelaide: Making light of the obsession surrounding him ahead of the Australia Test series, India skipper Virat Kohli on Wednesday said every batsman in the side has the ability to win games single-handedly and the hoopla around him is something he cannot do anything about.

"This (obsession) is something that I don't believe in, at all. Whatever batsmen we have, all of them have so much ability that every one of them can single-handedly turn any game," Kohli told reporters on the eve of India's first rubber here.

"This is something I believe in 120 per cent, and even they have faith in themselves. On the outside what people think, we cannot control. I cannot tell people to not to talk about it or write about it," he added.

A lot of talk has been on how to stop Kohli from getting runs in this part of the world where the World's No.1 batsman has enjoyed enormous success in his last visit.

At Adelaide Oval, Kohli has three hundreds from two Tests.

"I love coming to this ground, the city in general. I really enjoy the city, I don't know what the connection is, but I just feel really good here. Not to say that the performances are always guaranteed in a certain place but yes, coming to Adelaide I feel different from places that I have gone in the world and that's been the case," said Kohli.

The right-hander added that this ground is his favourite outside India.

"It happens to every cricketer, they have a favourite ground away from home. For me, Adelaide has always been special, because I scored my first Test ton here. So, from then on the connection started.

"It's a great place to play cricket in general; the stadium has been redone, the pitch has always been good. So it's about which team plays better, it's been that kind of pitch. They are no-givens on the Adelaide pitch. I have enjoyed my cricket here."

Kohli further stated that good memories here certainly helps build confidence.

"Familiarity certainly will help the fact that we have played quite a few Test matches here before and scored runs. So I think it's even more important to know that you have performed in a place and you know how to get runs there.

"It's all about remembering those good things that we did and applying it here. I know England and South Africa were tougher. Australia can be a great place to bat if the batsmen apply themselves well. But it takes character. It takes grinding out tough situations," he said.

Kohli feels the line won't be crossed by either of the teams.

"I don't see stuff happening, which has happened in the past where both teams have crossed the line. But still it's a competitive sport at the end of the day and it's international cricket. We don't expect guys to just come, bowl and walk back," Kohli said.

Kohli hinted that there could be healthy banter but the 'Code of Conduct' won't be violated like the previous series.

"Obviously, there are going to be times when you have to put the batsmen under pressure. Not necessarily crossing the line, but just get into their heads which you expect from any side in the world, not just Australia. It's going to be there, but it's not going to happen at the level, which has happened in the past, where both teams have lost control," Kohli said.

Asked about the Australian team's mindset post the ball tampering saga, Kohli said: "I don't think, personally, any team should be totally negative after something like that happens (ball-tampering scandal).

"But the competitiveness will be there because you eventually want to get the guys out. If the situation is going your way, and you understand against the important guy in the opposition, you will go hard at that person. Be it your body language or putting in a word or two."

India aim to start Test campaign on a positive note      Cache   Translate Page

Adelaide: Aiming to win their maiden Test series in Australia, India want to start the campaign on a positive note, when they face the hosts in the opening match of the four match series here on Thursday.

World No. 1 India are coming on the back of some good performances at home, thrashing West Indies but were shocked by hosts Australia in the recently concluded Twenty20 International series while fifth ranked Australia had a torrid year due to controversies and poor outings.

India's overseas record is not that impressive as they lost a Test series in South Africa at the back end of last year and fell to England in a five-Test series away from home in the middle of 2018.

The visitors have also lost promising opener Prithvi Shaw as he suffered injury during the warm up game. So India have to come up with something different this time to put up a some challenge.

Skipper Virat Kohli also said that this time around the team is more experienced and players are fit as compared to the previous tours.

The batting department is comprised of some quality batsmen like Virat Kohli, Murali Vijay, Cheteshar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane who on their day can turn the game in their favour.

In the warm-up game against Cricket Australia XI, Indian batsmen were on the mark as all have scored runs.

India have also changed the five bowler strategy as Virat Kohli named only four bowlers for the upcoming match. The pace trio of Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah will be complemented by off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Australia, on the other hand, dropped Mitchell Marsh and handed Marcus Harris his debut in the upcoming match.

The conditions here are best suited for fast bowlers and the hosts are well prepared for it with the likes of Nathon Lyon, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.

The batting department also seemed settled with Aaron Finch, Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb. But the hosts will definitely miss the experienced players -- Steve Smith, David Warner -- who are serving bans for ball-tampering.

With India having struggled -- specially in batting -- during their previous tours to England and South Africa, skipper Kohli wants his boys to adapt quickly to the conditions.

"We are not looking to start tentatively. We all want to express ourselves and go out there and be positive. We want to bring our A-game in the first game and capitalise as the series goes on.

"We don't want to wait to figure out what is happening with the conditions or the pitch. We need to read it really early and alter our game, which we couldn't do in the last two tours," Kohli was quoted as saying by the official website of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday.

"When we have done it, we have won games. We have to do it for longer periods to win a series, which is our goal. We want to be a consistent side and for that, we have to adapt quickly than in the past."

The Indian captain also dismissed the idea that Australia will be easier opponents due to lack of experience in their current squad.

"I personally don't think any Australian side is vulnerable at home. We cannot take any side for granted and more so Australia. Regardless of all the things that have gone by, their skill levels are still there. We'll have to be at our best to get the results that we want here," Kohli said.

"As a side, we're looking to correct the mistakes from the last two tours. The focus is completely on our side."Squads:

India: Virat Kohli (captain), KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wk), R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami.

Australia: Tim Paine (captain & wk), Marcus Harris, Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, Shaun Marsh, Peter Handscomb, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood.

Ind vs Aus: Kohli looking to avoid 'tentative start'      Cache   Translate Page
Acknowledging the slow starting in the recent tours to England and South Africa, Indian skipper Virat Kohli has asked the team not to look for "tentative start" while taking on Australia in their first Test of the four-match series beginning December 6.Indian skipper Virat Kohli, while admitting that they have been slow starters during their recent tours to England and South Africa, asked the team to not look for "tentative start" while taking on Australia in their first Test of the four-match series beginning December 6.The 30-year-old also emphasised on the need to put their "A-game" right from the first Test so that a foundation could be laid for the rest of the series.Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Kohli said: "We are not looking to start tentatively. We all want to express ourselves and go out there and be positive. We want to bring our A-game in the first game and capitalise as the series goes on."Detailing about the team's focus on the game, Kohli said: "We don't want to wait to figure out what is happening with the conditions or the pitch. We have to do it for longer periods to win a series, which is our goal. We want to be a consistent side and for that, we have to adapt quicker than in the past," he added.Measuring the Australian challenge ahead of their first Test, Kohli refused to take their opponents lightly saying no side is "vulnerable" at home. He, however, added that they are focused just on their own performance."I personally don't think any Australian side is vulnerable at home. We cannot take any side for granted and more so Australia. Regardless of all the things that have gone by, their skill levels are still there. We'll have to be at our best to get the results that we want here," Kohli said."As a side, we're looking to correct the mistakes from the last two tours. The focus is completely on our side," he added.Talking about the unavailability of fast bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya for the Test series, Kohli admitted that Pandya was a big loss. However, in the same breath he added that he doesn't see it as a major issue."Every side would like to have a fast bowling all-rounder, which we don't have now with Hardik injured. The workload on the guys who will play in the absence of the all-rounder will be high, which has been discussed," he said."Losing Hardik is obviously a bit of an issue, but I don't see that as a major issue. In Australia, you have to bowl really well even if you are an all-rounder to contain the batsmen," he added.India will kick-start their Test campaign against Australia at the Adelaide Oval.

Comment on The Obsolete Palestinian Authority by Bahram Nooryani      Cache   Translate Page
I am impressed that this issue has been raised by Professor Paul Pillar, a 28 year American veteran of the CIA with direct responsibilities for Middle Eastern Affairs. This article has also significantly increased my considerable esteem for the author's decency, honesty and integrity. He must have had a tough time advising his political masters whose policies on the region have lacked all sense of decency, fairness, honesty or integrity. I think he has been a little too polite using "obsolete" in the article title. Since Arafat's death (possibly assasination), the PA has acted as a tool of Israeli occupation, providing a useful fig leaf for the sham "peace process" that has abetted the continous theft of Palestinian land. He has also been too kind describing the PA as a "self-sustaining organization whose main day-to-day significance is as a source of employment for Palestinians". More accurately, the PA has for a long time provided well rewarded sinecures for a bunch of corrupt officials led by Mahmoud Abbas. No wonder he is in the 14th year of a 4 year term of office. Palestinians should face the long standing reality, drop the Don Quijotian quest for a never to be realized "2 state solution", and fight for equal rights as citizens in the de facto single (Apartheid) state of Greater Israel. Perhaps the world would then pay proper attention to their plight by wider acceptance and support of the BDS movement, as with Apartheid South Africa. A single state and BDS is the only realistic solution for the Palestinians and what the Likudniks & the US fear most.

Ross Douthat Oozing Stupid, Racist Thoughts About George H.W. Bush All Over NYT      Cache   Translate Page

Ross Douthat is getting a lot of heat for his column in today's New York Times (not gonna link it -- wouldn't be prudent). It's as overwrought and stupid as ever but more racist than usual. Douthat wonders if all "the nostalgia flowing since the passing of George H.W. Bush" (told you it was overwrought) is because "we" miss WASPs because "we" feel "that their more meritocratic and diverse and secular successors rule us neither as wisely nor as well." Douthat is very presumptuous in his use of "we." As someone who qualifies as "diverse" and "secular," I don't believe I'm responsible for America's decline ... or not solely, at least.

Based on my Facebook feed, Bush nostalgia seems connected more to Dana Carvey's impersonation of him on "Saturday Night Live," but maybe folks genuinely miss a politician who caved repeatedly to the right wing and famously broke campaign promises. There apparently are no politicians like this anymore. Douthat, of course, is not talking about Bush's actual deeds but his manner. He was the last truly WASP president, if you exclude his son, George W. Bush, which everyone insists on doing. W. Bush attended boarding school in Andover, Massachusetts, where he was a cheerleader, before his family name got him into Yale and Harvard. But he has a Texas accent so he's not some elitist like Barack Obama.

What's so good about WASPs and the days when they ruled the earth like boat-shoe wearing dinosaurs? Was it their throwing back gin-and-tonics while snarling at the help at the club? Douthat is kind enough to tell us in words that were clearly not read by human eyes or edited into coherent thoughts.

The WASP virtues also included a cosmopolitanism that was often more authentic than our own performative variety — a cosmopolitanism that coexisted with white man's burden racism but also sometimes transcended it, because for every Brahmin bigot there was an Arabist or China hand or Hispanophile who understood the non-American world better than some of today's shallow multiculturalists.

I guess if you sometimes transcend the horrors of colonialism, everything else is a-ok. It seems like Douthat is suggesting that WASPs who were really into different cultures somehow understood the "non-American world" better than the descendants or actual members of those cultures. That is advanced-level white supremacy.

Douthat, like most social conservatives, imagines a better world where the culture wars still happened -- the Civil Rights Movement, the women's movement -- but WASPs steered the ship immediately afterward and kept away from the stormy waters of everything about modern culture they detest. Douthat "compliments" Barack Obama by claiming he invokes the "admirable influences" of WASP attitudes and behavior. White supremacy is so ingrained in his thinking, Douthat can't imagine that what makes Michelle Obama and her husband so awesome might have nothing to do with how well they might "imitate" whiteness.

So it's possible to imagine adaptation rather than surrender as a different WASP strategy across the 1960s and 1970s. In such a world the establishment would have still admitted more blacks, Jews, Catholics and Hispanics (and more women) to its ranks … but it would have done so as a self-consciously elite-crafting strategy, rather than under the pseudo-democratic auspices of the SAT and the high school resume and the dubious ideal of "merit."

It's clear here that the establishment is still white men graciously choosing to include in the ranks "more" minorities (and parenthetical women -- just how I like 'em). White men would still rule us all. The self-determination of women and minorities is a horrifying thought to the Douthats, who fear a world without themselves in control. Douthat doesn't comprehend that a WASP-led society that is simultaneously slightly more inclusive would resemble something akin to apartheid South Africa. Remember WASPs dominated a world that excluded pretty much everyone who wasn't a white male. We're not just talking about the Ivy League. Black folks had to get our asses kicked to be served at a lunch counter. The world inevitably changes as more voices are heard. Kirsten Gillibrand expressed this sentiment on Twitter and WASP-enabler Marco Rubio was horrified.

What's strange, beyond Rubio's ability to stand upright without a functioning spinal cord, is that we just had an election last month that ended with the Florida senator's political party becoming even more white and male. This "we're all just Americans" BS is willful ignorance, especially when Republicans are very aware of race and ethnicity. They wouldn't know which polling places to close otherwise.

I doubt I'll find an angry tweet from Rubio about Douthat's column, even though Douthat regularly argues that religion is a key element of the American identity. And not just any ragamuffin religion: He thinks society went wrong when we exchanged "Protestant rigor for a post-Christian Social Gospel and a soft pantheism." (My pantheism ain't soft, buddy.)

To be fair, the historic problem WASPs have with encroaching modernity is not exclusive to social conservatives. It's a serious issue on the left, as well. White folks with white savior complexes aren't accustomed to minorities or women taking up so much space or expressing so many opinions that are their own. If you're not a straight white male, then you might feel just as condescended to by Douthat's liberal counterparts at the Times.

I'm reminded of the annoying and somewhat misogynistic monologue from the recent Aaron Sorkin series "The Newsroom." Sorkin's mouthpiece decries millennials as the "worst generation ever" and dismisses a young woman, based on nothing but her appearance, as a "sorority girl." He then subjects us to middle-aged nostalgia for days when better generations made America the greatest nation in the world. It is impossible to ignore that these supposed greatest generations had fewer, if any, women or minorities in control. What are we to discern from the ongoing not-so-subtle implication that art, culture, and politics were all better off before we got more involved?

Nostalgia, for either of the Bushes or even the Obamas, is never a good thing. It causes us to take our eyes off the road and lose focus on what matters, which is appreciating today and working toward a better tomorrow. As my old friend Prior Walter said, "The world only spins forward."

(I quoted a bunch from Douthat's word diarrhea, so I suppose I am obligated to provide a link, but you can just ignore it like the intro to a show on Netflix.)
