Measles Cases Rise Globally With Spikes In The Middle East, Europe And The Americas Cache Translate Page
Copyright 2018 NPR. To see more, visit MARY LOUISE KELLY, HOST: Measles used to be one of the leading killers of children worldwide. Through the 1950s in the U.S. alone, three to four million people got sick with measles each year. Thousands died. Well, that changed dramatically when a measles vaccine became widely available in 1963. But the number of cases is on the rise again, with the most significant increases in Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. NPR's Jason Beaubien reports. JASON BEAUBIEN, BYLINE: The World Health Organization says there were 6.7 million measles cases in 2017, a 30 percent increase from the year before. Measles deaths are also up significantly. In the Middle East, measles has spiked in war-torn Yemen. In Venezuela, it crept back as the economy and health care systems have collapsed. In Europe, Ukraine is getting hit the worst, but there have also been significant outbreaks in France, Italy, Serbia, and Greece. The WHO warns that anti-vaccination

Al final, no he conseguido gran cosa.

France suspends fuel tax hike; protesters vow to fight on Cache Translate Page
PARIS – The French government’s decision to suspend fuel tax and utility price hikes Tuesday did little to appease protesters, who called the move a “first step” and vowed to fight on after large-scale rioting in Paris last weekend.

In a major U-turn for the government, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced in a live televised address that the planned increases set for January would be postponed until summer.

The backpedaling by President Emmanuel Macron’s government appeared designed to calm the nation three days after the worst unrest on the streets of Paris in decades.

“No tax is worth putting the nation’s unity in danger,” Philippe said, just three weeks after insisting that the government wouldn’t change course in its determination to wean French consumers off polluting fossil fuels.

But demonstrations continued around the country Tuesday.

Protesters wearing their signature fluorescent yellow vests kept blocking several fuel depots and, on a highway near the southern city of Aubagne, protesters took over a toll booth to let vehicles pass for free. They put up a sign by the side of the road reading “Macron dictator.”

“It’s a first step, but we will not settle for a crumb,” said Benjamin Cauchy, a protest leader.

In the nearby port city of Marseille, students clashed with police outside a high school. Student protests blocked or otherwise disrupted about 100 high schools around the country blocked or otherwise disrupted by student protests Tuesday, according to the French Education Ministry. Many of the demonstrations were over a new university application system.

More protests were expected this weekend in Paris.

Last weekend, more than 130 people were injured and 412 arrested in the French capital. Shops were looted and cars torched in plush neighborhoods around the famed Champs-Elysees Avenue.

The Arc de Triomphe, which is home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and was visited by world leaders last month to mark the centenary of the end of World War I, was sprayed with graffiti and vandalized.

“This violence must end,” Philippe said.

Philippe held crisis talks with representatives of major political parties on Monday, and met with Macron, who canceled a two-day trip to Serbia amid the most serious challenge to his presidency since his election in May 2017.

On Tuesday, Philippe announced a freeze in electricity and natural gas prices until May 2019, and warned protesters against more disruptions.

“If another day of protests takes place on Saturday, it should be authorized and should take place in calm,” he said. “The interior minister will use all means to ensure order is respected.”

A soccer match between Paris Saint-Germain and Montpellier, scheduled for Saturday in Paris, was postponed after police said they couldn’t guarantee security there and at protests simultaneously.

The protests began last month with motorists upset over the fuel tax hike, but have grown to encompass a range of complaints, with protesters claiming that Macron’s government doesn’t care about the problems of ordinary people.

In all, four people have been killed and hundreds injured in clashes or accidents stemming from the protests.

Political opponents of the government called Philippe’s announcement Tuesday too little, too late.

“This decision should have been taken from the start, as soon as the conflict emerged,” said prominent Socialist figure Segolene Royal, a former candidate for president, adding: “The more you let a conflict fester, the more you eventually have to concede.”

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen tweeted that the delay in price rises was “obviously not up to the expectations of the French people struggling with precariousness,” and noted sarcastically that it is “surely a coincidence” that the price hikes will now come into effect a few days after EU elections.

The Polish offering also offers customers access to the video libraries of Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., MTV Polska and Comedy Central. CEE is the second region to roll out the Paramount-branded entertainment offering, with a version already available in the Nordics.

The news follows Viacom launching the award-winning Nickelodeon Play VOD app in in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in September 2018. The app debuted in Serbia, and will roll-out in more territories in the near future.

In additional Nickelodeon Europe news, Greek mobile network operator Cosmote TV has enriched its over-the-top (OTT) Cosmote TV Go service with the new package Cosmote TV Go Sports Daily Pass which offers access to 13 sports channels, including 9 Cosmote Sport channels for a whole day. Paramount+ néven új VOD-szolgáltatást indít a Viacom a Magyar Telekommal

Paramount+ néven új video-on-demand szolgáltatást indított Magyarországon a Viacom – jelentette be a Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) hazai képviselete.

Theresa May named world’s second most powerful woman by Forbes Cache Translate Page

Theresa May has held on to her title as the second most powerful woman in the world as she fights to win UK Parliament’s approval of her Brexit deal, according to a ranking by Forbes. The Prime Minister was again behind German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was named the world’s most powerful woman for the eighth straight year. The Forbes magazine list, announced on Tuesday, determines a power ranking for the world’s leading women by applying metrics like money, media and impact. The oldest woman in the top-100 is Queen Elizabeth II, who at age 92 ranked 23rd, while 28-year-old US pop star Taylor Swift was youngest (68th). Notable debutantes include tennis star Serena Williams (ranked 79th) and Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić (91st), while US politician Hilary Clinton dropped out of the list for the first time since it started in 2004. International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde of France ranked third, while US General Motors boss Marty Barra (4th) and philanthropist Melinda Gates (6th), the wife of Bill Gates, also ranked highly. The top-100 women control or influence nearly 2 trillion US dollars in revenue and oversee some five million employees, Forbes said. Forbes executive vice president Moira Forbes said the 2018 list reflects the volatile state of global business and politics. “The world’s most powerful women are leading amidst a tumultuous time where geopolitical tensions are on the rise, key economies are facing instability, and where trust in institutions is at an all-time low,” she said. Merkel, who recently announced she will not seek re-election after 13 years in power in Germany, retained the top spot for the eighth straight year.

UNC BOG MEMBER THOM GOOLSBY CALLS TRUSTEES "COWARDS" OVER SILENT SAM DECISION: The proposal to return the Silent Sam Confederate monument to a new $5.3 million building at UNC-Chapel Hill is “sheer cowardice,” a member of the UNC system’s governing board said. Thom Goolsby, a lawyer from Wilmington and former Republican legislator, released a video on YouTube on Tuesday, sharply critical of the Chapel Hill campus Board of Trustees’ proposal to construct a university history and education center to house the controversial statue. “Neither the right nor the left is happy,” Goolsby said in the video. “If you try to be everything to everyone, you end up being nothing to anyone.” The 2015 state law on the protection of historic monuments requires that the statue should have been put back in its original position, Goolsby said, within 90 days of “the outside radicals tearing it down.” He asked viewers of the video to call their state legislators to demand that they contact the Board of Governors and Board of Trustees to insist that the law be followed.

MORE DETAILS EMERGE IN NC09 AFTER SECOND BALLOT COLLECTOR COMES FORWARD: The two women said they were paid $75 to $100 to pick up 50 ballots a week. Voters filled them out, and the women witnessed them, but the envelopes they were put in weren't sealed. "We did not know it was illegal to pick them up," Kinlaw said, adding that she has no idea what happened to the ballots after they were dropped off. "Once I dropped them off at his office, we assumed he was putting them in the mail." According to documents posted online Tuesday by the State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement, Dowless signed for turning in 580 applications for absentee ballots between Aug. 22 and Oct. 29. About 3,400 requested absentee ballots were never returned across the 9th District, which stretches along the North Carolina-South Carolina border from Charlotte to Robeson County before turning north into Bladen and Cumberland counties, according to elections board documents.

WISCONSIN LEGISLATURE EMULATES NC GOP IN STRIPPING POWERS FROM INCOMING DEM GOVERNOR: The Republican-controlled Wisconsin Senate has passed a sweeping measure taking power away from the incoming Democratic governor and attorney general, and reducing how long early voting can take place. The measure was approved on a 17-16 vote with all Democrats and one Republican voting against it. The Assembly was expected to give final approval later Wednesday morning and send the measure to Republican Gov. Scott Walker, who has signaled his support. The bill would limit the governor's ability to put in place administrative rules that enact laws and give the Legislature the power to control appointees to the board that runs the state economic development agency until Sept. 1. The bill is part of a package of Republican lame-duck legislation designed to weaken Evers and incoming Democratic Attorney General-elect Josh Kaul. Debate on the rest of the proposals was expected to stretch into early Wednesday in both houses.

INDICTMENTS FINALLY EMERGE FROM PUBLICATION OF PANAMA PAPERS BY JOURNALISTS: Prosecutors in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York late Tuesday accused Ramses Owens, a longtime lawyer for Mossack Fonseca, of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit tax evasion and money laundering. Owens’ name appears 96,696 times in the massive database of leaked files maintained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which pulled together reporters across the globe for the undertaking. He left the firm after the April 2016 publication of the Panama Papers. Also charged in the alleged conspiracy, which the indictment said dates back to 2000, are German citizen Dirk Brauer, an investment adviser for Mossfon Asset Management, which worked closely with the parent law firm to invest and manage client money; Richard Gaffey, an American accountant based outside Boston; and Harald Joachim von der Goltz, a German citizen who formerly lived in the United States and paid taxes there. The three financial professionals are alleged to have helped von der Goltz and other Mossack Fonseca clients evade U.S. taxes.

BACK TO THE 90'S: SERBIA THREATENS TO INVADE KOSOVO AGAIN: Serbia's prime minister warned on Wednesday that the formation of a Kosovo army could trigger Serbia's armed intervention in the former province — the bluntest warning so far amid escalating tensions in the Balkans. Tensions between Serbia and Kosovo soared after the Kosovo government last month introduced a 100-percent tax on Serb imports — an apparent retaliation for a failed Kosovo bid for membership in the international police organization, Interpol, after intense Serbian lobbying. Brnabic said that Serbia is losing 42 million euros ($48 million) a month because of the Kosovo tariffs hike. Serbia has been strengthening its armed forces, devastated after the 1999 NATO intervention, mostly with Russian help. An armed intervention by Serbia in Kosovo would trigger a direct clash with NATO-led peacekeepers stationed there. Serbia recently increased its saber-rattling, including raising the combat readiness of its troops over a series of small incidents.

Macedonia | Tikves Wine District | Demir Kapiya | Popova Kula Winery | Prokupec Cache Translate Page

It is my fourth day at the Popova Kula Winery, a Thursday, and I am still the only guest here. I checked on the internet and discovered, however, that this coming Saturday night the place is full-up with no rooms available. Luckily I am checking out Saturday morning. Incorrigible misanthrope that I am, I have been enjoying the solitude. Meanwhile I am continuing my investigations of the local vintages. The winery produces eleven different kinds of wine:
—Stanushina
—Vranec
—Prokupec
—Cabernet Sauvignon
—Merlot
—Sauvignon Blanc
—Temjanika,
—Chardonnay
—Zilavka
— Muscat Ottonel
—Muscat Hamburg
Stanushina, Prokupec, Vranec, Temjanika, and Zilavka are made from grapes indigenous to the Balkan Peninsula; these are the only varieties I am interested in. God forbid that I should come to Macedonia just to drink Cabernet Sauvignon or—horrors!— Merlot!

According to archeological findings, grapes has been grown and wine produced in the area of Demir Kapiya for at least the last 3600 years. The modern history of viniculture in the Demir Kapiya area began in 1927 when King Alexander Karadjordjevic of Yugoslavia (1888–1934) built a winery here to produce wine for the exclusive use of his royal family. Experts assured the king that of all possible locations in his kingdom, which covered a good part of the Balkan Peninsula, including modern-day Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia, this area was the most fertile and best suited for growing grapes and producing wine. He named the property the Winery of The Queen Maria in honor of his wife, Maria Karadjordjevic. The king hired the best vintners available and the winery was soon producing wine of extraordinary quality. Unfortunately King Alexander Karadjordjevic was unable to enjoy the fruits of his vineyards for long. On October 9, 1934, during a state visit to Marseille, France, he was assassinated by Bulgarian revolutionary Vlado Chernozemski.

The subsequent history of the winery is a bit hazy, but apparently it continued producing wine in the decades thereafter, except during the world wars and various local upheavals. After the Second World the Royal Winery, along with other wineries in what was then Yugoslavia, were nationalized. Over 30,000 families who owned small private vineyards continued, however, to supply grapes to these wine making facilities. It was these people who are credited with maintaining the high quality of local viniculture during the following decades. After the breakup of socialist Yugoslavia in the 1990s and the emergence of the former Yugoslavian republic of Macedonia as an independent country most if not all wineries were privatized. The royal winery in Demir Kapiya was privatized in 1994 and is now known as the Royal Winery Queen Maria. The current winery has an on-site restaurant and rents out rooms, apartments, and for high-rollers the former villa of Queen Maria Karadjordjevic.
King Alexander and Queen Maria
The Popova Kula Winery is built on lands that once belonged to the Royal Winery. Construction of the winery itself started in October of 2004 and was completed in August of 2005. Construction of the winery restaurant and hotel was not completed until 2009. The name of the winery, “Popova Kula”, means “Priest’s Tower”. Apparently during the time of the Roman Empire an important road ran through the grounds of the current winery. A large tower served as a checkpoint on the road, and this eventually became known at the Priest’s Tower. This original tower was eventually torn down, but the winery has erected a new 55-foot high tower its honor. This tower has become the easily recognizable symbol of the winery.

The “Priest’s Tower” of Popova Kula
Curious about this Roman road, I went down to the lobby and questioned the receptionist, a charming woman in her thirties. She in turn questioned one the local workmen who happened to be handy, and this guy said the Roman road in question was the famous Via Egnatia dating to the time of the Roman Empire, which ran from Durrës in what is now Albania east 696 miles to Constantinople, right across the heart of the Balkan Peninsula. This was certainly intriguing. I had already visited numerous cities and towns on the old Via Egnatia, including Thessaloniki, Kavala, and Kastoria in Greece and Orhid in Macedonia but I was under the impression that the old Roman road passed through the Balkans a good bit south of Demir Kapiya. The receptionist called the local wine museum and the woman at the museum suggested I stop by for more information. So I hiked a mile into town and found the museum, a modest two-room establishment in downtown Demir Kapiya. The woman in charge informed me that the Roman road through Demir Kapiya was not the Via Egnatia itself but a side branch of the main highway. Nevertheless, I was thrilled to discover that Demir Kapiya was in fact linked to the hallowed Via Egnatia. I harbor the sneaking suspicion I have traveled this road in a previous lifetime.
The Via Egnatia in red. The northern extension in green may be the one that passed through Demir Kapiya.

After trekking a mile back from the museum to the winery I retire to my balcony to sample the wine of the day; in this case Prokupec, a wine apparently indigenous to what is now Serbia but also grown in Macedonia.
Prokupec

From my balcony can be seen the Iron Gate, a gap in the mountains through which the Vardar River flows. The Iron Gate marks the southern boundary of the Tikves Wine Region. It also gives its name to the town just to the north—Demir Kapiya, which in Turkish means “Iron Gate”.

Halfway through my first glass of Prokupec my thoughts drifted, perhaps inevitably, to the Persian Poet Rudaki (858 a.d – 941 a.d.), the favorite poet of the Samanids of Bukhara, in what is now Uzbekistan. The Elton John of his Age, at one point Rudaki owned two hundred slaves who attended to his needs, and a hundred camels were necessary to carry his baggage when he traveled. His verses, it was said, filled a hundred volumes; he reportedly wrote 1,300,000 couplets. Almost all of his work has been lost. Unfortunately, the poet came to a bad end. He may have fell under the sway of the Ismaili Sect, considered heretical in the domains of the Samanids, and he eventually fell out of favor with the court. His lament:

Who had greatness? Who had favour, of all people in the land?
I it was had favour, greatness, from the Saman scions' hand;
Khurasan's own Amir, Nasr, forty thousand dirhams gave,
And a fifth to this was added by Prince of Pure and Brave;
From his nobles, widely scattered, came a sixty thousand more;
Those the times when mine was fortune, fortune good in plenteous store.
Now the times have changed--and I, too, changed and altered must succumb,
Bring the beggar's staff here to me; time for staff and script has come!

He reportedly died in abject poverty. Perhaps in his final days he repeated one of his couplets:

Were there no wine all hearts would be a desert waste, forlorn and black,
But were our last life-breath extinct, the sight of wine would bring it back.
Rudaki
A white wine, Zilavka, that I tried earlier. It is also indigenous to the Balkan Peninsula. I am not a big fan of white wine, but this one was not bad at all.

Advent Traditions - The Nativity Fast of the Orthodox Christian Churches Cache Translate Page
Across the centuries, some Christians fast (don't eat anything) during advent to help them concentrate on preparing to celebrate Jesus's coming. In many Orthodox & Eastern Catholics Churches, Advent lasts for 40 days and starts on November 15th & is also called the Nativity Fast. The Nativity Fast is a period of abstinence and penance practiced by the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, & Eastern Catholic Churches, in preparation for the Nativity of Christ, (December 25). The corresponding Western season of preparation for Christmas, which also has been called the Nativity Fast & St. Martin's Lent, has taken the name of Advent. The Eastern fast runs for 40 days instead of four (Roman rite) or six weeks (Ambrosian rite) & thematically focuses on proclamation & glorification of the Incarnation of God, whereas the Western Advent focuses on the two comings (or advents) of Jesus Christ: his birth & his Second Coming or Parousia.
Celebrated during the Nativity Fast. Three Young Men in the Fiery Furnace, celebrated during the Nativity Fast as a reminder of the grace acquired through fasting (15C icon of the Novgorod school). Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego are the 3 pious Jewish youths thrown into a "fiery furnace" by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.

The Byzantine fast is observed from November 15 to December 24, inclusively. These dates apply to those Orthodox Churches which use the Revised Julian calendar, which currently matches the Gregorian calendar. For those Eastern Orthodox Churches which still follow the Julian calendar (Churches of Russia, Georgia, Serbia, Ukraine, Macedonia, Mount Athos & Jerusalem), the Winter Lent does not begin until November 28 (Gregorian) which coincides with November 15 on the Julian calendar. The Ancient Church of the East fasts dawn til dusk from the 1st December until the 25th of December on the Gregorian calendar.

Sometimes the fast is called Philip's Fast (or the Philippian Fast), as it traditionally begins on the day following the Feast of St. Philip the Apostle (November 14). Some churches, such as the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, have abbreviated the fast to start on December 10, following the Feast of the Conception by Saint Anne of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Through the discipline of fasting, practiced with humility & repentance, it is believed that by learning to temper the body's primary desire for food, that other worldly desires can be more easily tempered as well. Through this practice one is better enabled to draw closer to God in the hope of becoming more Christ-like. While the fast influences the body, it is important to note that emphasis is placed on the spiritual facet of the fast rather than mere physical deprivation. Orthodox theology sees a synthesis between the body & the soul, so what happens to one affects the other. The church teaches that it is not enough to fast from food; one must also fast from anger, greed & covetousness. In addition to fasting, almsgiving is also emphasized.

In the Eastern Orthodox Church, the fast traditionally entails fasting from red meat, poultry, meat products, eggs, dairy products, fish, oil, & wine. Fish, wine & oil are allowed on Saturdays & Sundays, & oil & wine are allowed on Tuesdays & Thursdays, except in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

The fasting rules permit fish, &/or wine & oil on certain feast days that occur during the course of the fast: Evangelist Matthew (November 16), Apostle Andrew (November 30), Great-martyr Barbara (December 4), St. Nicholas (December 6), St. Spiridon & St. Herman (December 12), St. Ignatius (December 20), etc.

Orthodox persons who are ill, the very young or elderly, & nursing mothers are exempt from fasting. Each individual is expected to confer with their confessor regarding any exemptions from the fasting rules, but should never place themselves in physical danger.

There has been some ambiguity about the restriction of fish, whether it means the allowance of invertebrate fish or all fish. Often, even on days when fish is not allowed, shellfish may be consumed. More detailed guidelines vary by jurisdiction, but the rules strictly state that from the December 20 to December 24 (inclusively), no fish may be eaten.

The Eve of Nativity (December 24) is a strict fast day, called Paramony (lit. "preparation"), on which no solid food should be eaten until the first star is seen in the evening sky (or at the very least, until after the Vesperal Divine Liturgy that day). If Paramony falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the day is not observed as a strict fast, but a meal with wine & oil is allowed after the Divine Liturgy, which would be celebrated in the morning.

In some places, the services on weekdays during the fast are similar to the services during Great Lent (with some variations). Many churches & monasteries in the Russian tradition will perform the Lenten services on at least the first day of the Nativity Fast. Often the hangings in the church will be changed to a somber, Lenten color.
The Entry of the Virgin Mary into the Temple, the Great Feast which falls during the course of the Nativity Fast (16C Russian icon).

During the course of the fast, a number of feast days celebrate those Old Testament prophets who prophesied the Incarnation; for instance: Obadiah (November 19), Nahum (December 1), Habbakuk (December 2), Zephaniah (December 3), Haggai (December 16), Daniel & the Three Holy Youths (December 17). These last are significant not only because of their perseverance in fasting, but also because their preservation unharmed in the midst of the fiery furnace is interpreted as being symbolic of the Incarnation—the Virgin Mary conceived God the Word in her womb without being consumed by the fire of the Godhead.

As is true of all of the four Orthodox fasts, a Great Feast falls during the course of the fast; in this case, the Entry of the Theotokos (November 21). After the apodosis (leave-taking) of that feast, hymns of the Nativity are chanted on Sundays & higher-ranking feast days.

The liturgical Forefeast of the Nativity begins on December 20, & concludes with the Paramony on December 24. During this time hymns of the Nativity are chanted every day. In the Russian usage, the hangings in the church are changed to the festive color (usually white) at the beginning of the Forefeast.

Two Sundays before Nativity, the Church calls to remembrance the ancestors of the church, both before the giving of the Law of Moses & after. The Menaion contains a full set of hymns for this day which are chanted in conjunction with the regular Sunday hymns from the Octoechos. These hymns commemorate various biblical persons, as well as the prophet Daniel & the Three Young Men. There are also a special Epistle (Colossians 3:4-11) & Gospel (Luke 14:16-24) readings appointed for the Divine Liturgy on this day.

The Sunday before Nativity is even broader in its scope of commemoration than the previous Sunday, in that it commemorates all of the righteous men & women who pleased God from the creation of the world up to Saint Joseph. The Menaion provides an even fuller service for this day than the previous Sunday. At the Vespers portion of the All-Night Vigil three Old Testament "parables" (paroemia) are read: Genesis 14:14-20, Deuteronomy 1:8-17 & Deuteronomy 10:14-21. The Epistle which is read at the Divine Liturgy is a selection from Hebrews 11:9-40; the Gospel is the Genealogy of Christ from the Gospel of Matthew (1:1-25)

Christmas Eve is traditionally called Paramony (Greek: παραμονή, Slavonic: navechérie). Paramony is observed as a strict fast day, on which those faithful who are physically able to, refrain from food until the first star is observed in the evening or after the Vesperal Divine Liturgy, when a meal with wine & oil may be taken. On this day the Royal Hours are celebrated in the morning. Some of the hymns are similar to those of Theophany (Epiphany) & Great & Holy Friday, thus tying the symbolism of Christ's Nativity to his death on the Cross. The Royal Hours are followed by the Vesperal Divine Liturgy of St. Basil which combines Vespers with the Divine Liturgy.

During the Vespers, 8 Old Testament lections ("parables") which prefigure or prophesy the Incarnation of Christ are read, & special antiphons are chanted. If the Feast of the Nativity falls on a Sunday or Monday, the Royal Hours are chanted on the previous Friday, & on the Paramony the Vesperal Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is celebrated in the morning, with its readings & antiphons, & the fasting is lessened to some degree—a meal with wine & oil being served after the Liturgy.

The All-Night Vigil on the night of December 24 consists of Great Compline, Matins & the First Hour. One of the highlights of Great Compline is the exultant chanting of "God is with us!" interspersed between selected verses from the prophesy of Isaiah 8:9-18, foretelling the triumph of the Kingdom of God, & 9:2-7, foretelling the birth of the Messiah ("For unto us a child is born...& he shall be called...the Mighty God....").

The Orthodox do not normally serve a Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve; rather, the Divine Liturgy for the Nativity of Christ is celebrated the next morning. However, in those monasteries which continue to celebrate the All-Night Vigil in its long form—where it literally lasts throughout the night—the conclusion of the Vigil at dawn on Christmas morning will often lead directly into the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. When the Vigil is separate from the Divine Liturgy, the Lenten fast continues even after the Vigil, until the end of the Liturgy the next morning.

On December 25, the Afterfeast of the Nativity of Christ begins. From that day to January 4 (the day before Theophany Eve) is a fast-free Period. The Eve of the Theophany (January 5) is another strict fast day (paramony).

Raw Politics: Is Macron's u-turn enough to quell the 'gilets jaunes' protests? Cache Translate Page
In an attempt to stem the "gilets jaunes" ("yellow vest") protests in France, President Emmanuel Macron put off fuel tax hikes for six months. But is it enough to appease the movement, which is now in its third week of demonstrations? On Raw Politics, Correspondent Anelise Borges spoke to protesters in the northern French city of Lille, who told her they not want to speak to Macron and will continue to protest. In the studio, French MEP for the Les Republicans party, Angelique Delahaye, told the show: "It is a pity for me to see our French citizens in this way of life." She added that the increase in taxes, not just for fuel, is "just a small thing" and that there is "no justice" for them in waiting six months. Brian Maguire, a reporter at Euractiv, said 50% of French people survive on less than EUR1,700 per month, while tax cuts are given to the wealthy. In defence of Macron, ' political editor Darren McCaffrey said protests are common in France and reforms have been an issue before Macron's time in office. The protests have spread across the globe, to Brussels, Serbia, and Iraq. The Cube takes a look at what they are demonstrating against.

EDIFICIO - ALTARE

Sveglio prima dellalbeggiare

sul palmo sanguigno

prese

la prima pietra

e sotto la soglia

per fortuna mise una

moneta doro

e all improvviso vide

che in essa la casa

edificata divenne

monumento e simbolo

crocifero molto più grande

nel sonno che nella veglia

PREGHIERA

Angelo bianco

della parete santa

di Mileševa* 2

scendi tra di noi

e difendici dal male

che ostinatamente fiorisce

nei potenti

sul fondo dellorribile veduta

eri nostra consolazione

fuoco celeste accendi

riscalda i morti

lascia in pace

rami del frutto selvatico

le innesteremo da soli,

esci nella radura

mettiti in campo,

e fatti pietra nel corso del cantare,

nel mio pensiero malefico

non c'è altro,

è l'ultima ora

vattene da dove sei giunto

nel bosco di pietra

dove il gallo non canta

dove il cane non abbaia

SERBIA

Sei una scommessa nella cena del Principe

bandiera nella mano di Boško Jugović *3

ricamo e pianto della sconfortata Jefimija *4

Lettera d'amore nel fondo

di Lazarica e Manasija5

fuoco vibrante ottovocalico

nello specchio cosmico

dolcezza sul volto

della Madonna tri-bracciale

pietra mai strozzata

con nessun battipalo pronto

per il ballo e lo scherzo

con potenti e infedeli

rinchiuso nelluccello

con ali eternamente spiegate

con semi nella mano

benedetta del seminatore

progeneri sempre valletti darmi

dalle vene sante di quercia

INCENDIARIO

Sulla loro lingua

la nostra casa è bruciata

da tempo

per fortuna non sanno

che la nostra altra dimora

si trova nella lacrima

inessiccabile del Signore

con sua progenie della sorte

Hanno bruciato il nido

auto-creato per vedere

quanti eravamo dentro

ma sotto la cenere

non possono contarci

e non se laspettavano

che nellangoscia ci moltiplichiamo

e che il fuoco

è il nostro bersaglio

LETTERA DELLA TRINCEA

Tento di scoprire quante parole

mai pronunciate ci sono ma necessarie

per la tenerezza quanto miracoloso fiato

ad aumentare lamore affinché cresca

nei miei occhi come onda di marea

sospinta da tempesta occulta

mi sforzo di notare quellondeggiare

sul mare nascosto

nella lingua nello spazio indicibile

tra i sostantivi intrisi

con la paura della solitudine antica

la notte apparentemente quieta

come se tutto in questo mondo

si fosse addormentato nella ricerca della speranza

che vivrebbe in qualcosa migliore

e riceverebbe un nuovo nome e volto

sono sdraiato di vedetta nella trincea

accecato dal folgorare

delle stelle lontane credendo

che molto presto nella nostra casa

avremmo quella più brillante

per fiammeggiare nellattimo damore

PAROLA DELL' ASSENZA

Il frutteto fiorisce insieme a me

e senza di me

Quieta ferita

Ma ciò che fiorisce

presto languisce

Della mia assenza

parla a primavera

un ramo

La parola è colma

di rimpianto

e predica

METAMORFOSI

Prima una nuvola oscura

dopo un gregge selvatico

assalito sul prato

lungo il monte magico

in fine sullerba

cade la pioggia dorata

ad aumentare il bagliore

dello specchio addormentato

poi di nuovo il buio

e una tempesta rovinosa

e orrore nellocchio

eternamente inessiccabile

          Perry Robinson (September 17, 1938 - December 2, 2018) Cache Translate Page

On December 2, Perry Robinson, the virtuoso clarinetist and free-minded spirit passed away at the age of 80. Robinson was a real "musician's musician", very sought as a member of bands and possibly the clarinetist of the early free jazz movement in the 60s (next to Jimmy Giuffre who was on a slightly different musical track). His first album was one with Henry Grimes - with whom he's kept a special relationship throughout his career - Paul Motian and Kenny Barron, just to show that excellent musicians find themselves from the start. Then he performed with Archie Shepp, was part of the famous avant-garde jazz big bands of the seventies: the Jazz Composers' Orchestra and Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, while at the same time, across the Atlantic, performing extensively with German reed-player Gunter Hampel.

He performed on more than 120 albums, of which a about a dozen were released as a leader, or one album every five year. That he was highly esteemed by his colleague clarinetists can be demonstrated by his participation in the Clarinet Summit, a multi-country ensemble of some of the best clarinetists around in 1979, including John Carter, Gianluigi Trovesi, Bernd Konrad, Theo Jörgensmann and Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky. It is also not suprising that other clarinetists like Hampel and more recently, Polish clarinetist Waclaw Zimpel, asked him to join their bands.

He was also a citizen of the world, a free spirit, and basically open to play in any type of configuration or jazz genre, and he was even part of Klezmokum, a Dutch klezmer band, created by Burton Greene. This jewish heritage also shone through in his other collaborations with Anat Fort, Rozanne Levine and Waclaw Zimpel.

But whatever the genre, his approach was virtuosic, soft-toned and inherently melodic, often capable of combining tradition and adventurous moments in the very same solo.

We will cherish his heritage.

AGERPRES / (AS - autor: Daniel Popescu, editor: Marius Frăţilă, editor online: Alexandru Cojocaru)
