Winning Play: Karlsson, Goodrow’s desperation      Cache   Translate Page
“The Sharks are flying,” exclaimed San Jose Sharks play-by-play announcer Randy Hahn, during the first period of San Jose’s 3-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. How often have we heard that during the Sharks’ 0-3-1 road trip? Critically, San Jose wasn’t just flying offensively last night — they were literally flying defensively, too. Most importantly, every Shark — from top-pairing defenseman Erik Karlsson to fourth-liner Barclay Goodrow — flew. Let’s start with the superstar. Karlsson (65) expertly jumped the Jonathan Drouin (92) breakout. San Jose, however, fumbled the puck. Drouin earned a measure of revenge, threading it past Karlsson and Evander Kane (9) to Max Domi (13). Domi and Andrew Shaw (65) had what appeared to be a clear 2-on-1. That is, until Karlsson turned on the jets. But Karlsson didn’t just flash speed here, he showcased his defensive capabilities. At his best, he uses his skating and stick to take away offensive options. As Karlsson gained on Domi with body, skating and stretched-out

The night started off well, but the Sharks held on for dear life to end their road trip on a high note. It was a long and frustrating road trip through Buffalo and Eastern Canada, but the San Jose Sharks were able to end it on a high note with a 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Throughout this five-game road trip, the Sharks have chased the score, playing from behind in all their games, never once holding the lead. However, against the Canadiens, the Sharks were able to grab the opening goal of the game and hold the lead for the first time on this road trip. A turnover led to Justin Braun recovering the puck and firing a slap shot past Carey Price early in the first period, for a goal Price certainly wants back. After struggling their first four games, the Sharks looked like a completely different team in the opening period as they took the early lead and seemed to have an extra gear in their skates. The Sharks maintained control of the puck with a 54.55 Corsi For Percentage (CF%) and through the opening

This one may have saved some jobs. The big, scary questions about the Sharks’ future seem to have been allayed for another few days. With a 3-1 win over the Canadiens in Montreal, the Sharks salvage three points out of a five game road trip, and may have saved head coach Peter DeBoer’s job for a while yet. The story of San Jose’s win tonight has to center around Martin Jones. Playing the second road game in as many nights, Jones stood tall, stopping 34 of Montreal’s 35 shots on the night, and withstanding a dangerous push in the third period. The Habs controlled 56% of the game’s five on five shot attempts, a number that was buoyed by a 79% shot attempt share in the third period. After the Sharks outscored their hosts 2-0 in the first period, thanks to Braun and Burns, Jones’ one goal allowed to Jeff Petry in the second was not enough for the Habs to climb back into the game (math!). Joe Pavelski tallied one late in the second to put the game into a place that would turn out to be out of reach. Overall, the

This is a lost Sharks team looking blindly for a solution. When you talk about losing streaks, the magic number is four and the Sharks have hit that magic number in spectacular fashion. The latest debacle, a 6-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators, in a game that was very much in the Sharks’ reach at least for points in the game. The short summary is that on paper, the game looked close. San Jose out-shot the Senators, 38-27. The Sharks won 59 percent of the faceoffs and went one for three on the power play. If you look at the 5-on-5 Corsi courtesy of Natural Stat Trick, San Jose had the better possession. Courtesy: Natural Stat Trick The only problem is, the Sharks didn’t win where it counts, on the scoreboard. If you’re a glutton for punishment, keep reading. If not, I would not be hurt if you stopped here, though I would suggest at least scrolling to see the tribute to Erik Karlsson, courtesy of the Sens. This was Karlsson’s first game back in Ottawa since the team traded him away in the pre-season. Karlsson rece
They Called Her “the Che Guevara of Abortion Reformers”      Cache   Translate Page

There was nothing remarkable about the small woman carrying a box of leaflets—certainly nothing to justify the clutch of reporters waiting for her across from San Francisco’s Federal Building on a July morning in 1966. Still, there they were. She arrived at exactly 9 a.m., greeted them, and began distributing fliers to anyone who passed. There were two of them: One was a yellow slip of paper titled “Classes in Abortion,” listing topics like female anatomy, foreign abortion specialists, and police questioning. The other—which she gave only to the assembled journalists and the five women who signed up for her class that Wednesday evening—described two techniques for DIY abortions. “I am attempting to show women an alternative to knitting needles, coat hangers, and household cleaning agents,” she told the reporters, adding that she had notified San Francisco police of her whereabouts and plans.

The woman was Patricia Maginnis, a laboratory technician and founder of the Society for Humane Abortion, an organization that she ran out of the front room of her small apartment in San Francisco. She’d started the SHA in 1962 (back then, it was called the Citizens Committee for Humane Abortion Laws). Arguably the first organization of its kind in America, its mandate was radical: The SHA sought to repeal abortion laws, endorse elective abortions, and offer women any resources it could in the meantime. These resources would come to include “the List,” an up-to-date directory of safe abortion specialists outside the country, classes on DIY abortions, and symposia where sympathetic doctors could confer with each other about the safest and best abortion techniques. SHA would eventually formalize its legal strategy with a branch called the Association to Repeal Abortion Laws (ARAL, which would form the basis for NARAL), specifically devoted to challenging legislation.

But on this particular day, and on this particular mission, Maginnis claimed she was acting alone, outside of her organization. The leaflets were her way of knowingly violating both a city ordinance and Section 601 of the California Business and Professions Code, which declared it unlawful to distribute information about abortion. She was also flouting Penal Code 276, which made it a crime to “solicit[] any woman to submit to any operation, or to the use of any means whatever, to procure a miscarriage.” The violation was the point: Maginnis had politely informed the police of her every move in advance. The aim was to goad the legal apparatus into an ugly confrontation that it preferred to keep as merely a threat; she wanted to make the system own the consequences of its laws. “I could get arrested for soliciting women to undergo a felony,” Maginnis told the alt-weekly Berkeley Barb, “but I feel it is necessary at this point to have a test case.” To get a law thrown out, you first need to go to court. And to get to court, you must be arrested.

She’d launched her leaflet campaign about six weeks earlier, and the police had so far refused to respond to her provocation (some cops would later tell Maginnis that they knew she wanted to be arrested—implying this was why they’d refrained). Still, things were going smoothly enough this morning; a man named Steve Hooper, writing for the Barb, described the women to whom Maginnis gave leaflets as ranging from neutral to receptive. Some wished her luck. (As for the men, they “seemed indifferent except for one old suit who said he wanted a leaflet for his secretary,” Hooper wrote.)

Then it happened. While the reporters watched, a documentarian named Gary Bentley interviewed Maginnis for 10 minutes with a camera crew. Content with his footage, he asked his cameraman to film as he walked up to Maginnis. Here’s Hooper describing what happened next:

With microphone in hand and cameraman turned on, he said, “I’m placing you under citizen’s arrest for violating Section 188 of the Municipal Police Code. What do you think of that?”

“Excuse me, please,” Pat Maginnis said, and she hurried after one more woman to give her a leaflet.

When the police arrived in response to Bentley’s citizen’s arrest, they did so unwillingly. They tried to argue that they weren’t the ones arresting her even as they helped Maginnis into a cop car. It didn’t matter. Maginnis’ “test case” paid off. San Francisco’s Section 188 would be declared unconstitutional, and the case against her would be thrown out in court. It was the first of her many legal victories.

A social history of American abortion shows two things: 1) that it’s always been around, and 2) that anti-choice efforts tend to intensify in response to women’s perceived “liberation.” This was certainly true when Pat Maginnis came of age. Women had joined the workforce in unprecedented numbers during World War II, and the 1950s were engaged in the genie-rebottling project of fetishizing traditional gender roles. One result, as Leslie Reagan points out in When Abortion Was a Crime, was a sharp increase in the (medicalized) oversight of women’s choices. A system in which abortions were decided between the patient and her doctor or midwife would eventually give way to hospital committees, which debated on a case-by-case basis whether women deserved “therapeutic” abortions. The discussions were humiliating and sometimes even coercive, particularly when they concerned lower-income women and women of color: It wasn’t uncommon for committees to approve the requested abortion if the woman agreed to be sterilized. As medical bureaucracies solidified, hospitals started reporting abortions (and attempted abortions) to police.

That this compromised women’s privacy and subjected their health care to literal policing barely registered in these discussions, which tended overwhelmingly to prioritize the physicians’ perspective rather than women’s needs. Doctors worried about the semilegal status of “therapeutic” abortions, but they also didn’t like committees telling them what to do with their patients. In either case, the debate revolved around doctors’ preferences and anxieties. There were plenty of organizations trying to reform abortion laws, ranging from Planned Parenthood—which in 1955 held an “abortion conference” to address possible reform efforts—to the California Committee to Legalize Abortion. Some abortion activists also chose to work within the existing framework: steering patients toward favorable hospital committees or training women on what to say to get “therapeutic” abortions, whether by emphasizing excessive vomiting or offering up stories that would earn them permission on psychiatric grounds.

Maginnis aimed for more than reform. She wanted a total system overhaul. As a figure in feminist history, Maginnis, now 90 years old, may not loom as large as a Margaret Sanger or a Betty Friedan. But while she’s finally getting some belated recognition, she was never particularly interested in taking credit for her work. Nor was she much invested in making herself or her positions respectable or palatable to mainstream culture. This may have made her an awkward figure for a movement that was then treading delicate territory. And yet, a decade before Roe, with her ungainly activism, her proclivity for wearing clothes she’d found on the street, and her righteous, unquenchable rage, Maginnis helped to fundamentally reshape the abortion debate into the terms we’re still using today. She was the first to take a passionate, public stance arguing that the medical stranglehold over women’s reproductive lives was corrosive. And the Society for Humane Abortion was arguably the very first American organization to advocate a pro-choice position that centered the woman, instead of the legal dilemmas of the physician—specifically, her right to privacy and choice. Rejecting the finicky gatekeeping protocols, the committees and evaluations and red tape, Maginnis proposed that the only question anyone should ask prior to approving an abortion was a simple one: whether the woman wanted it.

Pat Maginnis grew up with six siblings in Okarche, Oklahoma, during the Great Depression. Her father, a veterinarian, barely scraped by. Her family’s troubles were compounded by Catholic strictures: Her mother had converted in order to marry her father and—because birth control was not an option—consequently continued having children long after the doctors advised against it. “She had constant ‘female trouble,’ ” Maginnis says, recalling her mother’s unhappiness and pain. “I don’t know what that meant, but she had constant problems.” Her father, the illegitimate son of an opera singer, was differently scarred by the vagaries of unplanned pregnancy. “My grandma was on her way to be a star,” Maginnis says, “but she got pregnant. And apparently pregnancy was just a killer of dreams.” Her father never got over the humiliating circumstances of his birth. “He was a good soul, but forever tortured because he had been conceived out of wedlock.”

It’s hard to separate Maginnis’ refusal to become a parent herself from the misery that this litany of reproductive events inflicted on her family. Maginnis says that her father was so abusive that her older brother confessed to her that growing up he’d feared for his life more than once. Her family was not, in consequence (and despite its size and religious piety), particularly close. Some years after she started the SHA, her mother sent her a letter: “Dear Patricia,” Maginnis reads now, affecting a formal, slightly prissy voice, “I was thinking you must be about 40 years old. I do think you could do something besides teaching these girls to commit murder. P.S. If you come this way, do look us up. Love, Mother.”

It was a sufficiently chilly relationship—and Maginnis was so eager to get away—that she describes her banishment to a boarding school as a relief and remembers her mother’s trip to visit her in California with some acidity. “I never talked to her about my sex life,” Maginnis says. I’d asked whether she ever discussed abortion with her mother; that her answer took this form surprised me slightly. I wouldn’t necessarily have used the phrase “sex life” (which, to me, connotes pleasure) to include abortions. But Maginnis would; in fact, that was sort of her point. Any campaign for elective abortion is, of course, at least in part aimed at granting that women, too, might find joy and delight in sex (rather than just pain, danger, and obligation). As a guilt-ridden ex-Catholic myself, I was both baffled and impressed by Maginnis’ immunity to the shame that ailed her family: How does a soft-spoken, scrupulously polite Oklahoma girl who attended Catholic schools with strict Catholic parents shed her sexual guilt to become not just sexually adventurous, but a pioneer in activist lawbreaking?

When Maginnis was growing up, the family’s house looked out on a highway where convoys of young soldiers would pass during World War II. The Maginnis girls didn’t date, but, Pat says, “I was bursting with hormones.” She gasps at the memory of a convoy of young men passing her house: “Oh, I was just—I ran in the house, and I grabbed a pink satin bedspread. … In about five minutes, I made a halter.” Her parents came home to find their 14-year-old busily waving at trucks filled with men in her pink halter. When she saw her parents, she ran back inside and changed back into her gray togs, but it was no good: She was sent to a convent school. “I was naughty,” she says. But as with all these sorts of stories, the prudery only half-strangled her desire.

Instead of going straight to college like her sisters, she went to work in a lab at the Bureau of Mines in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and funded her own sea voyage to the Netherlands to meet a longtime pen pal and notional fiancé. They did not marry in the end. (“I knew that the intimacy required and the responsibilities and the thought of children I couldn’t face,” she says. “I decided that marriage was not for me.”) Then, partly because a friend told her the uniforms were cute, she joined the Women’s Army Corps. She was stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina until she was spotted walking with a black soldier: “The captain called me in and scolded me. She said, ‘You’re setting a bad example for young white women who might join the military.’ ” She was shipped off to Panama as punishment.

During those two years in Central America, she experienced a different kind of discrimination. She’d trained as a surgical technician, but instead of being allowed to work in surgery as she’d hoped, she was assigned to the pediatrics and obstetrics wards—the realm of women. There, she was exposed to women suffering from botched abortions, women being forced to give birth, infants with terrible abnormalities. What she didn’t get in surgical experience, she got in perspective. “A general overview of the status of women,” as she puts it to me. “And I wasn’t at all happy with it.” Then she went to college at San Jose State—and got pregnant. She’d been fitted for a diaphragm. Used foam. None of it worked.

Maginnis is amiable and funny. She has a gift for impressions and chuckles ruefully at things I find sad or hard to hear. But when I ask her about her decision to terminate, she speaks with real anger—present-tense anger she still feels, decades later. “I was not in the family-ing business, and a child coming from me was not going to happen,” she tells me. “I simply thought my parents were ruthlessly forced into parenthood, and they … took it. They accepted it,” she says. “My mother would tell you she enjoyed having children. I didn’t go through childhood with that impression.”

She got her first abortion in Mexico and swore to herself that she would never again leave her own country to get medical care. She spent the next decade producing a list of legitimate abortion providers outside the country while also working quietly with those within it. Despite her best efforts, she would get pregnant twice more. But she would continue to have a sex life. And the horror of having to wrestle down her own fertility forged her into the formidable antagonist to the law that she became.

It helped, perhaps, that Maginnis was no longer young by the mid-1960s. She came of age long before the sexual revolution, which meant she had a particular experience of—and a particular fury about—what women had been routinely expected to tolerate. It’s hard for statistics to express just how urgent the abortion conversation was in the 1960s, or how difficult it was to even have the conversation, given the laws. In 1961, Los Angeles County Hospital admitted over 3,500 patients treated for illegal abortions. As of 1967, almost 80 percent of the women who died as a consequence of botched abortions were nonwhite.

From Dorothy Fadiman’s documentary “Motherhood by Choice, Not Chance”

Maginnis can’t pinpoint a single moment that turned her into an activist. She admits to once feeling great sympathy for a celebrity who was pilloried for needing an abortion, but it’s clear that there was no single precipitating incident. Her work, rather, was inspired by a slow and building rage. “What I saw was law, medicine, and religion were largely at fault for our problems,” she says.

When Maginnis launched her leaflet campaign, she chose a location that would maximize her ability to confront a medical community she saw as at best patronizing to women and at worst exploitative and controlling. The state Board of Medical Examiners had gathered at the University of San Francisco to discuss the implementation of hospital committees that would determine whether women could receive abortions. As the mostly male board debated the circumstances under which women could be forced to give birth, Maginnis was outside handing out information on how to abort without the help of the doctors within. She was shocked at how unseriously the board took their mandate. She told the Berkeley Barb that when she’d handed some board members a leaflet titled “Are you Pregnant?” with abortion information on it, they “twittered like a bunch of schoolgirls.”

This, she felt, was the collective effect of the laws and ordinances that made even talking about abortion illegal: The entire concept had become untouchable, a boogeyman. “The word abortion was taboo,” she says. “And I thought: That’s crazy. People won’t talk about abortion! They’re afraid to. I’m going to talk about abortion! ABORTION!” she yelled. “Women weren’t talking about it. They were afraid to talk about it.”

Maginnis wasn’t. She relied on logistical help from two women, Lana Phelan and Rowena Gurner, who joined her to form the Society for Humane Abortion’s central trio, which came to be known as the “Army of Three.” Maginnis was the fire, Gurner the strategist and organizational genius, and Phelan the organization’s eloquent mouthpiece. Gurner, like Maginnis, also worked full time, professionalizing the organization in her spare hours. She spent many nights sleeping on SHA’s floor. Gurner “had polish,” Maginnis tells me, her eyes lighting up. “She gave me $20 once. Now, Patricia!” she says, mimicking her. “You go buy a new dress for this occasion, and don’t bring something that you found on the street or in the thrift store!

Gurner’s gift for strategy and Maginnis’ grit turned the leafleting plan into an all-out, accelerating assault on laws they saw as punitive or unjust—using themselves as bait. “I plan to leaflet for abortion until they get sick of me and arrest me or repeal the law,” Maginnis had announced to the Berkeley Barb when she launched her campaign on June 16, 1966. Her initial plan had been to distribute a thousand leaflets. A week later, when she hadn’t been arrested, she escalated. “My minimum goal is to distribute 50,000 leaflets by July 25, telling women where they can get abortions,” she announced through the press. When she finally was arrested (in late July, thanks to that “citizen’s arrest” by Gary Bentley), she caused the city ordinance under which she was arrested to be ruled unconstitutional. She had no intention of stopping there. “I was arrested under a local ordinance,” she told the Barb in 1966. “Now it’s the state laws that need changing.”

When the San Mateo County district attorney announced that if Maginnis and Gurner showed up, he intended to enforce California’s state law forbidding the dissemination of written matter on abortions, the pair immediately arranged a class in San Mateo that covered abortion laws and DIY abortions. As Gurner put it to the Barb: “We just want to get this law on trial. … We obviously and willingly broke the law. And we did it so that no DA could weasel out because of ‘insufficient evidence.’ ” It worked. They were arrested on Feb. 20, 1967, and faced (according to the Barb) a sentence of five to seven years in state prison if found guilty. While their hearing was in progress—in a courthouse in Redwood City—an unrepentant Gurner and Maginnis advertised that they were still looking for a place in Berkeley they could rent on Thursday nights to hold more abortion classes. (The room needed to hold 50 people, and they were willing to pay $10 a night.)

It took six years from their 1967 arrests for Maginnis and Gurner’s efforts to pay off. Initially, both women were convicted of violating Section 601 of the California Business and Professions Code—the state statute that made it unlawful to advertise abortion. But in 1973, the state Court of Appeals overturned their convictions, ruling that Section 601 was overly broad—for one thing, it “does not distinguish between abortions which are permitted and those which are not”—and thus unconstitutional.

The Army of Three hadn’t been trying to get arrested merely as a matter of strategy: They had real information to distribute, information that was hardest to obtain for women who weren’t rich. Maginnis was incensed by a medical consensus that effectively discriminated against the poor. “The medical profession’s committee idea of legalized abortion is very discriminatory,” she told the Barb. “It will help those with lots of money or contacts, not the majority of women.” Lower-income women suffered—like the third member of the Army of Three, Phelan, who struggled to collect the $50 she needed for an illegal abortion. Women in search of abortions were also easy to exploit. According to Maginnis, some parties whose phone numbers and addresses were being circulated (or sold) as abortion providers weren’t actually doctors. This discovery, and the accompanying stories of botched abortions and sexually exploitative abortionists, spurred her to create “the List.” Essentially a Yelp for abortion seekers, the List offered a continuously updated and reliable list of qualified abortion providers in Japan, Sweden, and Mexico. The Jane Collective in Chicago would follow suit a few years later, performing the abortions themselves.

By 1969, the Society for Humane Abortion claimed to have sent 12,000 women out of the country to get abortions from reliable, trustworthy providers. To give you a sense of just how necessary the List was, here’s an excerpt from one List user’s earlier attempt to obtain an abortion domestically (as printed in a set of letters to ARAL published by the Los Angeles Free Press): “I was two weeks along then and he made me wait until I was 3 months along. Then he said it was too late to get any help from anyone but he would do it if I would sleep with him!” The classes SHA organized instructed women on every aspect of an abortion: how to schedule one, how to prepare, what to expect, how it was done, how to respond to police interrogations if you had to be hospitalized, and how—if you couldn’t travel—to perform your own.

The classes sometimes included DIY abortion kits with items like gauze, a thermometer, cotton, and a syringe. Maginnis was by all accounts a vivid teacher. Newspapers reported that she lectured using an IUD for a pointer and that she “graphically illustrated the dangers of unsanitary abortion by holding up anal bacteria cultures and infected blood samples.” The class taught women female anatomy. It instructed them on how to calculate how many weeks pregnant they were. It instructed them on exactly how to call for an appointment (the woman, not the man, should place the call).

These classes were understood by many to be essential but legally risky. When the Los Angeles Free Press took the bold step of republishing the entire class’s contents across several pages of an October 1967 issue, the layout was anxiously peppered with editor’s notes and legal disclaimers like: “The Free Press can not and does not advise women who are not legally entitled to an abortion to follow the advice of Pat Maginnis.”

The Society for Humane Abortion didn’t interact much with the feminist movement or Planned Parenthood directly, at least at first. “It was too touchy,” Maginnis says. In the SHA’s early days, Planned Parenthood was more invested in advocating for contraception than abortion. Margaret Sanger’s theory was that abortion would become unnecessary if women had sufficient access to contraception. Maginnis disagreed. “Margaret Sanger, bless her,” she says. “We can’t thank her enough for Planned Parenthood, but it isn’t enough.” Under Maginnis’ leadership, the SHA spoke out—and in certain regards, provoked change—in ways Planned Parenthood wouldn’t. “We used to say we made Planned Parenthood respectable,” Maginnis laughs.

Her admiration of Sanger, though, is genuine. “Sanger took rotten eggs and tomatoes and rotten fruit thrown at her when she went out, and I don’t think people know that today,” she says. She understood that an organization with Planned Parenthood’s institutional heft needed to keep some distance from the SHA; Maginnis’ strategy of flagrantly flouting the law had made her something of a too-hot-to-handle legend.

When the Therapeutic Abortion Act was signed into law by California Gov. Ronald Reagan in 1967, the Army of Three planned a program of civil disobedience. The act, an unhappy compromise between groups whose politics hadn’t yet coalesced into well-defined positions like “pro-choice” and “pro-life,” ostensibly aimed to make legal abortion more widely available. (National Review called the signing of this bill Reagan’s “darkest hour.”) Abortion at the time was only legal to save the life of the mother; the act made “therapeutic” abortion legal in cases that would “gravely impair” women’s mental as well as physical health. But it also added a draconian 20-week limitation and required that any medical committee discussion of a prospective abortion for reasons of rape or incest include the relevant district attorney. Functionally, as even some attorneys at the time argued, it meant that wealthy women (who dealt with private hospitals) would have access to abortions, whereas women in public hospitals would be bound by a more conservative take on the law: They would need to show sufficiently “severe” mental distress—like psychosis—to obtain a legal abortion. (“How much for a psychosis?” reads a political cartoon Maginnis once drew, depicting a patient asking a psychiatrist for a diagnosis that would legitimize a therapeutic abortion.)

“We’re going to instruct women in the arts of phony psychosis and false hemorrhage,” Pat Maginnis told reporters. “This unbelievable piece of legislative slop must be violated to the point that the medical profession and legislature is pressured into accepting more modern abortion techniques.” ARAL issued a leaflet asking members of Congress whether they would request permission to get a vasectomy or treatment for venereal disease from a panel of female doctors.

It was a combative stance—and a sign of SHA’s uncompromising position on the right to choose—for a bill that Planned Parenthood, among others, now credits with being among the first to functionally legalize abortion.

The “Che Guevara of abortion reformers,” as alt-weeklies called her at the time, now seems like an unlikely avatar of female rage. When I visited her at her home this summer, I found a 90-year-old woman who laughs a lot and peppers her speech with gentle exclamations. “Oh, my goodness,” she chuckles, remembering the time she invited police to attend a class she was teaching on DIY abortions—and they asked her to pay $3 an hour for a female officer’s time. “I think a policewoman did show up, but more out of personal interest,” Maginnis says wryly. She conveys a bemused mildness I found hard to reconcile with the working-class firebrand I’d expected.

But there’s no real contradiction here: The woman who said “excuse me” to the man detaining her in 1966 is also the woman who faced down the San Francisco homicide squad in 1959 in the hospital while recovering from a self-induced abortion. Had she given herself an abortion? the police asked. “Sure I did,” she replied. “Want me to demonstrate how in court?”

In her 10th decade, Maginnis remains equal parts polite and independent. She lives alone in a house in the San Antonio neighborhood of East Oakland that she bought back in 1979 for a song (the owner had tried to burn it down for the insurance money). Until just a few years ago, when she gave her archives to a library, her house was filled with several decades’ worth of handwritten letters from women telling her about their abortions or asking for help.

In the ’60s, especially given the respectable caution that characterized organizations like Planned Parenthood, there was a radical politics to the matter-of-factness with which the Army of Three openly talked about their own abortions. And that matter-of-factness still feels radical today. The second time she got pregnant, Maginnis recalls, she was deeply frustrated at the prospect of being forced to leave the country again for an abortion. But by then, she says, “I had figured out, if I start just giving my uterus no rest, that fetus is going to fall out.”

Startled, I ask Maginnis to explain. She elaborates that her plan was to “squat down and take my clean, scrubbed fingers and manipulate until I could get it to rebel and kick the fetus out.”

“So you could reach your cervix?” I ask.

“Oh yeah, very easily. You probably could too.”

“Does that work?”

“I manipulated, I worked on it, and finally, at five months, the fetus went into—I went into labor. It took a long time and a lot of work.”

Five months of daily effort to induce an abortion, followed by labor and police questioning—all instead of a simple, fast, safe procedure. In telling me this story, she betrays none of the story’s weight; rather, there is a relationship between her tight understatement and her rage.

In interviews, Phelan was less circumspect and much more graphic about the horrors she endured because safe abortions weren’t easily available. After she had one child, her doctor told her another pregnancy would kill her but didn’t tell her how to avoid getting pregnant. When she did—as a woman, she once said, “you don’t know how to say no to your husband. That silly Bible says you can’t say no!”—it took her so long to gather the $50 she needed for an illegal abortion that by the time she’d saved it, she was four months pregnant. The abortionist—a woman on the outskirts of Tampa, Florida—stuffed her uterus with slippery elm bark and told her not to come back. She was at her sister-in-law’s house when she started to feel extremely ill. She’d told no one, not even her husband. As she recalled in 2004:

This is a thing you do yourself. And if you die and go to hell, it’s you that goes, not anybody else. So I excused myself to go to the bathroom because it was hurting so. When I sat down on the john and looked down, there was a little tiny hand protruding from my vagina and the blood was just flying, and I thought, “Oh my God, what do I do now?”

I didn’t take as long to think about it as Bush did the war … [laughs] I gathered up all the toilet tissue I could get in my hand and stuffed it back inside of me, pushed everything back up inside my vagina and just packed it. And got all the blood off I could and cleaned everything up. And then I went out back inside and said I had to go home because I was so sick, and that was not a lie.

She was 16. First came fear. The anger would follow. This seems to be a pattern: Restrict women’s rights, force them to suffer needlessly, blame them when they fail impossible tests, and you will eventually create unsuspected forces for change. “It seemed to me when I got involved wasn’t really when I got involved [in the abortion rights movement],” Maginnis says. “I’d been involved for years before, just not driven to do anything except be angry. In a constant rage over it. And wondering why women, in addition to myself, were in a constant upheaval.”

Was Roe v. Wade a relief when it was passed? I ask her. “For me it wasn’t a big relief,” she says. It had felt more like the expected course of events—reality inching closer to how things should be. But then she continues: “I thought, yeah, that is a good thing. Now, let’s hope we can at least maintain the healthy ideas of it being available. We don’t have to sneak, we don’t have to beg.”

If the Federalist Society—which supplied the list of judges from which Donald Trump chose Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court—has its way, we’re in danger of returning to the times when women had to sneak and beg. Trump pledged during his campaign that Roe would be overturned “automatically” through the pro-life judges he would nominate. It probably won’t be so straightforward: The route the GOP is taking to greatly restrict women’s access to abortion has been circuitous, with progress marked by legal restrictions, by expanding definitions of fetal personhood, by permitting women to be lied to in the service of a single end goal. As my colleague Dahlia Lithwick has written, “women’s experiences, memories, and suffering don’t matter; their control over the truth of what they themselves have lived through is determined by those who win.”

Faced with a similar orthodoxy half a century ago, Maginnis and her cohort refused to let it stand.

The classes a modern-day SHA might teach would likely be different. There’s the internet, for one. The first time we met, I asked Maginnis what she thought women should be doing now, as the country seems poised once again to try to control our bodies. “I’ve thought about that,” she said then. “If I was going to reinvolve myself at this point, what would be the entry point? Kind of like setting out a map, looking for an entry.” She doesn’t quite have an answer. Yet.

It’s late afternoon on my final visit with Maginnis, and the warmth and long conversation have made the upstairs room where we sit feel especially lived-in. Her compatriots Gurner and Phelan died years ago. It’s not lost on me that I’m talking to someone who fought for reproductive freedom pre-Roe, at a moment when a Supreme Court justice has just been hand-picked to take it away again. In recent months, rage has been much on my mind. If over half of Americans stand to have a committee of men overrule their right to bodily autonomy after a mere 45 years, we can learn a lot from Pat Maginnis—about how women survived, and how they died, and how they fought. So what should we do now? I ask her again, as she raises the blinds to open the window overlooking the street below. “Keep talking about the issue,” she says. “Sure, not everyone is a brilliant speaker, but I think people have to keep talking about it.” She looks at me, her eyes bright. “Don’t you?”

BWW Review: Rodgers + Hammerstein's CINDERELLA is Magical at Broadway San Jose      Cache   Translate Page

Broadway San Jose welcomed the touring company of Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella, which made a short stop at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts bringing with it the magical music of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It also brought some social satire and feminist moxie thanks to a fresh new book by Douglas Carter Beane which was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical in 2013. In Beane's hands, Cinderella is an empowered young woman whose kindness and agency help the prince wake up to the problems that the peasants of his kingdom are facing. Oh, and yes, they fall in love.

Kaitlyn Mayse is enchanting as the plucky Cinderella who, with the help of Crazy Marie, a.k.a., her fairy-godmother, attends the ball in style. Zina Ellis is wonderful as the homeless-woman-turned-fairy-godmother, her soaring soprano as impressive as her magical costume transformations - William Ivey Long won a Tony Award for his designs - which elicited delighted gasps from the audience. At the ball, the prince (a beguiling Lukas James Miller) finds Cinderella not only beautiful but also very kind.

In his research for the show, Beane discovered that the last line of the French version of Cinderella (there are lots of others) read, "And the moral of the story is beauty is a wonderful thing to find in a woman, but kindness is a much greater gift." His deference to this morality is readily apparent, though, in the role of step-sister Charlotte (the delightful Janna Johnson), we still see the coupling of girth with unattractiveness. Still, the focus on kindness and having the demands of the peasants brought to the attention of the prince through the activism of Cinderella and Jean-Michel (an awkwardly wonderful Nic Casaula) are refreshing and welcome additions. While the show was progressive, the casting lacked diversity. It stood out, in this age of Hamilton and Black Lives Matter, but that just might be the next phase for this magical show.

U.S. Tourist Killed on Vacation, Disturbing Twist to Story Puts One Man Behind Bars      Cache   Translate Page

At the end of November, American Carla Stefaniak went missing while on vacation. The 36-year-old woman from Florida was in Costa Rica celebrating her birthday.

Carla was with her sister-in-law, April, for most of the trip. However, April headed back to Florida two days before Carla was scheduled to return. The two were staying at an Airbnb in the San Jose suburb.

https://twitter.com/BBCWorld/status/1070070496908189696

After dropping off April at the airport, Carla reportedly went and explored the city and then returned to her Airbnb. She sent texts to her friends on November 27 that the power had gone out and that it was "pretty sketchy" outside.

The following day, no one heard from Carla. On the 29th when she was supposed to board her flight, she was nowhere to be found. On Tuesday, December 4, a body was found near the Airbnb.

https://twitter.com/BN9/status/1068666420316250114

After an autopsy was performed, local authorities confirmed that the body belonged to Carla. According to reports, she was killed by a blunt force trauma to the head.

Prior to the discovery of the body, the Airbnb host and the local security guard claimed that Carla had gotten into a car on the morning of the 29th with her luggage. However, her family never bought that story.

Now, the security guard has reportedly been arrested in connection with the murder. The 32-year-old guard, Bismark Espinoza Martínez, was taken into custody at around 11 p.m. Monday night for initial questioning.

https://twitter.com/WFLARyan/status/1070031308724822017

According to ABC, the security guard was staying in the apartment next to Carla's. They reported that Martinez has been living illegally in Costa Rica since June 2018.

Please be praying for Carla's family during this horrible time. They must be in absolute shock and filled with grief. Share your prayers here. In other recent news, the man behind one of America's most popular restaurants was just found dead. Please pray for his family as well.

Disturbing Update Released About American Woman Who Went Missing on Bday Vacation      Cache   Translate Page

At the end of November, extremely troubling news was reported about an American on vacation. 36-year-old Carla Stefaniak disappeared in Costa Rica while on a vacation to celebrate her birthday.

According to BBC, Stefaniak was with her sister-in-law, April Burton, in the San Jose suburb of Escazu. On November 27, Carla brought April to the airport as she was heading back to Florida a day early.

https://twitter.com/GlennaWPLG/status/1070039248944869376

April knew that her sister-in-law was taking an Uber to go sightseeing before returning to her Airbnb. Throughout the day, Carla was in communication with her friends back home.

Carla said that it had been raining throughout the day. At around 9 p.m. local time, she text a friend saying that the power in her Airbnb had gone out and that it was "pretty sketchy" outside.

https://twitter.com/WFLARyan/status/1070031308724822017

The following day, on November 28, several friends messaged Carla for her birthday but received no response. The following day, Carla failed to board her flight home.

Now, a week after her disappearance, the Costa Rican police have found a dead body wrapped in plastic near the Airbnb that Carla was staying at. As of 2:45 p.m. EST, police had not confirmed whether or not it is Carla.

According to Radar, the body is "extremely decayed" and therefore no confirmations can be made until an autopsy is performed. However, the Airbnb owner and local security guards are still sticking to their story.

https://twitter.com/Blotter_Report/status/1069930173829709825

They say that Carla left the rental home at around 5:00 a.m. on November 28 with her luggage. Still, Carla's family does not believe that story.

Please be praying for Carla's family during this extremely difficult time, especially as they await the results of the autopsy. Share your prayers here, and we will continue to update as information is made available. In other recent news, the man behind one of America's favorite restaurants was just found dead. Please pray for his family as well.

Verizon isn't the only carrier that'll have a 5G smartphone from Samsung in 2019.

AT&T today confirmed that it will launch a 5G Samsung smartphone in spring of 2019. No other details, like specs or pricing, have been announced, but AT&T says that it'll share more information in the coming months.

AT&T has installed mobile 5G network equipment in 12 markets across the U.S. where it plans to launch its service in 2018. The cities where AT&T mobile 5G will go live this year include Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Louisville, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Raleigh, San Antonio, and Waco. Coverage will expand to parts of Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose in the first half of 2019.

Rumors have suggested that Samsung is prepping a 5G version of the Galaxy S10, and it's possible that that's the device that could launch at AT&T and Verizon. Not only do Samsung's Galaxy S flagships already launch on multiple carriers, but a special Galaxy S10 with 5G connectivity and high-end specs could help convince more consumers to make the jump to 5G.

Austin Residents Saw America's Largest Credit Card Balance Jump In Past Year      Cache   Translate Page

Consumer credit recently hit a new all-time high, mainly on the back of newfound love with credit cards.

In the last 12 months, no major US metropolitan area experienced a surge in credit card balances than Austin, Texas.

It could be a sign that Austinites (mostly millennials) might be struggling with increasing household expenses, stuck in the gig economy: lower wages, horrible benefits, no job security, and heighten debt loads.

The study, published by credit card platform CompareCards, found credit card balances soared 12% from $6,165 to $6,924 during Sept. 2017 to Sept 2018.

CompareCards examined data from My LendingTree to compare the average credit card balance in the nation’s 50 largest cities. Austin was one of three cities that saw double-digit increases in credit card balances during the one year. The others were St. Louis and San Jose, California.

This type of credit growth was widely expected, considering our October report on consumer credit hit record highs. The Federal Reserve data showed that Americans’ revolving credit (credit cards) balances expanded 3.7% nationwide during the same period, hitting to a record $1.041 trillion.

CompareCards provides an analysis of why Austinites are resorting to credit cards at a much higher rate than the rest of the country:

"Austin, Texas — the city with the fastest-growing card debt — has seen years of rapid population and job growth, transforming the Texas capital into perhaps the most expensive big city in Texas. For example, reports showed that rents in Austin hit an all-time high of nearly $1,300 per month in June. Those high cost-of-living expenses, paired with the student loan debt issues that come with being the home of the University of Texas, one of the nation’s biggest colleges, mean that many Austinites may be leaning a little more heavily on credit cards these days."

Cities With The Biggest Percentage Growth In Credit Card Balances, Sept. 2017 to Sept. 2018

Top 20 Cities Ranked By Average Credit Card Balance Change %, Sept. 2017 to Sept. 2018

Matt Schulz, the chief industry analyst at CompareCards, told CultureMap that Austin's growth of credit card debt could be an indicator of consumer confidence.

“If you feel great about your job and your economic future, you may not sweat a little bit of a credit card balance because you firmly believe that you’ll be able to pay it off in relatively short order,” he said.

“Some people may even use credit card debt as a short-term investment, whether you’re remodeling a house or trying to start a business. That’s the kind of thing that could certainly be happening in a booming city like Austin, because people feel emboldened by a good economy.”

Although, when consumers acquire high debt/ savings ratio -- even when the reason is well-intended, their savings levels plunge to extreme lows that could be problematic in the next economic downturn, according to Schulz.

“That’s scary, because that means that when the next downturn comes, people might find themselves in a worse financial situation than they needed to be in, simply because they were overconfident,” he warned.

As economic storm clouds gather ahead of 2019, Austinites seem to be in a tough position of high debt loads, and limited savings, a perfect concoction for deleveraging as credit markets continue to tighten.

SOBRE LITURGIA

CONSILIUM AD EXSEQUENDAM CONSTITUTIONEM DE SACRA LITURGIA
Ciudad del Vaticano, 21 de junio de 1967 “In Natali Papae”
A LOS PRESIDENTES DE LAS CONFERENCIAS EPISCOPALES A LOS PRESIDENTES DE LAS COMISIONES LITÚRGICAS NACIONALES PARA SU INFORMACIÓN.

Excelencia:

al afligido que no tenía protector;

EVANGELIOMc 6, 45-52
Lo vieron andar sobre el mar
Lectura del santo Evangelio según San Marcos.
R.Gloria a ti, Señor.

«Animo, soy yo, no tengáis miedo».

R.Gloria a ti, Señor Jesús.

You are correct, Marleau retires , the Leafs still have his cap hit. The problem with trading him is that ntc.... I don’t see him waiving it to ride off into the Arizona sunset. And I can’t think of many teams that would be willing to absorb his cap hit. The bottom cap teams like Carolina, have their own players to deal with. And The reason he’s in Toronto today and not San Jose is because Sjs refusal to give him a 3 year deal instead of a 2 year deal. So I don’t see SJ making a welcome back retirement party for him. Toronto will more than likely have to deal around him.

The Apo Reef - A UNESCO Nature Park      Cache   Translate Page

Read on the web

The horrible typhoon "Haiyan" passed the Philippines and left chaos and disorder in a broad area. The last the Philippines needs now is a lack of tourists.

"Haiyan" made its way through the Philippines from the landfall in Leyte to its exit in the south of Mindoro. In occidental Mindoro, there is a small resort, the Apo Reef Club, which was fortunate to not have been hit that much. Maybe because of its tectonically beneficial location leeward of the hills and mountains and on the slight turn to the south of "Haiyan".

Whitetip Reef Shark

I spoke to the owner a few days after the typhoon and was happy to hear that nobody was harmed, and besides one roof and some fallen trees, no major damages occurred.

The same good news came for one of the best dive sites in the Philippines: The Apo Reef. It's a miracle that only minor damages occurred. Many mantas and grey reef sharks are around at the moment.

The Nature Park

In the Sulu Sea, 50 km from the west coast of Mindoro (Luzon Island) and in an area of 27.5 ha around Apo Island, lies a pristine reef. UNESCO has been protecting this amazing reef since 1996, as Apo Reef National Park. 158 square km is the core protection zone and 118 square km builds a buffer zone.

Lionfish

The reef is the largest atoll in the Philippines and the second largest single coral reef worldwide. It's incredible that not many divers have discovered this place already. Meeting a dive boat from another resort is quite rare. And the reef is healthy and has a high biodiversity.

Diving the Apo Reef

The Apo Reef is best visited on a two-day trip with the outrigger boat. There are also one-day trips with the speedboat, but, in doing so, you will miss the beautiful twilight or night dive – not to mention the wonderful night on the deck - as well as the very exciting early morning dive.

The reef itself is highly branched, offering dive spots for every weather condition. On the way to Apo Reef, we were accompanied by a group of pilot whales. Pilot whales belong to the family of oceanic dolphins. They are very social and live in family-like groups, led by a dominant female.

The Corals of Mabuti

Arriving in the morning, it's recommended to start with a dive at the outer side, for example at "Apo Out". There is a good chance for seeing big stuff there. As we jumped in, a nice school of tuna welcomed us.

Going inside, many dive places are worth a visit. The next dive we did was at "Action Point". The name says it all: there is action! A lot of sharks are cruising; barracudas, bumpheads, turtles, tuna and much more can also be seen along the reef. Sometimes, dolphins and mantas are there too. Stories about hammerheads are told.

"Action Point" is a place you should dive several times. The scenery in the evening is fantastic. The sun shines with green light through the surface. Trevallies are hunting, and you find yourself in schools of escaping fusiliers.

The next spot is a must, too. It's called "Mabuti" and offers similarly rich life like "Action Point." Not to mention there are huge corals in about 40m depths, and a school of bumpheads that frequently hang around Mabuti.

Bumpheads

Two days trips are closed with a visit of the shipwreck in the southwest. The wreck offers shelter for a rich ocean life. You can spot sweetlips, glassfishes, stingrays, trumpetfish, crocodile fish and much more. Many cuttlefishes linger around the wreck especially in mating season.

Research and Protection at Apo Reef

The Apo Reef is located at the northern tip of the coral triangle, which includes the seas of Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste.

It's not a coincidence that many research teams travel to Apo Island, for example ones from WWF, Greenpeace or the Haribon Foundation.

Local guardians protect the Island and the Nature Park. They collect the entrance fees and are forced to act against illegal fishing including dynamite fishing, which is still present near - or maybe sometimes in - the park.

The protection was quite lazy in the beginning, leaving certain areas not as pristine as described above. In 2007, fishing was completely banned after WWF convinced the local government to force a law. Since then, the Apo Reef has been recovering nicely. But still, there is a lot to do to preserve the beautiful reef.

Getting There

The best way is to fly to Manila and stay overnight. Yes, you have to get up early, as you have to take the short local flight to San Jose (Mindoro) at 6 a.m. And with a short bus drive, you can reach the Apo Reef Club.

The Apo Reef Club in Calintaan provides the most direct connection to Apo Reef. It's a nice paradise built by the Swiss owner Michael Roos. He pioneered this region and built this resort from scratch with a wholesome effort and love of detail. The staff is great, the atmosphere is relaxing, and you feel like part of a big family there.

The traveling distance to Apo Reef is about 50 km; the next resort is 160 km away from Apo Reef, and requires overnight travel to get there.

“My work is a visual dialogue between abstraction and representation. I borrow from the broad vocabulary of contemporary painting, blending geometric shapes, vivid hues, brush marks, and stains with a host of social and environmental concerns seen through flashes of representational elements. I include images such as surveillance cameras, fragments of bodies, the wreckage left behind after natural disasters, military aircraft, and birds in flight. Other references include comic books, Japanese woodblock prints, and camouflage patterns. Endangered species are a recurring theme in my work. I want to depict how our increasingly chaotic, artificial environment is becoming inhospitable to life.” — Kara Maria

“In a single canvas, Kara Maria skips from geometric shapes and well-defined forms to exuberant swirls and vibrant splotches of color. Like a channel surfer, she bounces from one thing to the next, no one gesture or mark being privileged over the other. She carefully builds her canvases, borrowing, reinventing and arranging seemingly unrelated forms and colors. Maria has characterized her paintings as collage-like, ambiguously retro and ‘cheerfully apocalyptic.’” — Kelly Lindner, Director, University Art Gallery, California State University, Chico

Kara Maria received her BA and MFA from UC Berkeley. Her work is held in numerous permanent collections, including those of the Crocker Art Museum, San Jose Museum of Art, di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, and Nevada Museum of Art. She is represented by Catharine Clark Gallery.

The exhibit is located in a space also used for events; please call (510) 643-9670 or email in advance to confirm room availability.

three photos of farmsteads in Lebanon
While searching the stacks for materials related to regional agriculture, we discovered a University of Chicago PhD dissertation among the collections. The text, titled "The Evolution of Land Utilization in Lebanon, New Hampshire," was written by Edward Nathaniel "Nat" Torbert, a member of the Dartmouth class of 1925. The data in this tome, which is nearly three inches thick, explores the ins and outs of farming from 1800 up to the date of its composition.

three photographs of Lebanon including the train roundhouse in West LebanonAlthough Torbert's research is interesting, especially when discussing the move from rural to urban environments in the 1800s, we were most fascinated by the photographic prints that he pasted into the pages of his
dissertation. Images of White River Junction, West Lebanon, and Lebanon abound, and each one provides a captivating portal back to life in a small rural town in the 1920s. Perhaps the photos are so particularly compelling because Torbert went on to be an award-winning amateur photographer.

Torbert was evidently a man meant to be outdoors and in the field. He initially was a professor of geography at San Jose State College, but soon shifted into a more active role: he worked with the Tennessee Valley Authority for several years before moving into successive international positions that revolved around his specialty in economic geography. From 1950 to 1951, he worked on a reclamation program in Haiti. Soon after, Torbert headed to Afghanistan as the chief planning engineer for an irrigation project that was meant to bring water to 3.5 million acres of farmland.

three photographs of Lebanon including the Coburn Park areaHowever, after only a few months there, he contracted bulbar polio, a particularly nasty variant of the disease which attacks the brain stem. At first, he and Elise, his wife, assumed that he had the flu. Within two days, his arms and vocal cords were paralyzed. A week later, after being airlifted out of the country on board the US Ambassador's plane, Torbert passed away in the Seventh Day Adventist hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. In a letter home, his wife said that she was "not prepared for the rapid progress of the disease nor for its fatality," that Norbert never regained consciousness enough to realize he had polio, and that "he remained sweet, patient and cheerful until the very end." Soon after, the United States Department of the Interior awarded him its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award. At the awards convocation, Douglas McKay, Secretary of the Interior, described Torbert as "broad in his thinking, considerate in his approach, firm in his beliefs, skillful in his operations, and unyielding in his devotion to purpose."

Najfajniejszy mecz towarzyski ever. Europa vs. Reszta Świata AD 1997      Cache   Translate Page

Mignęło mi to wczoraj w internetach i aż się rozrzewniłem. 4 grudnia 1997 roku odbył się mecz Europa kontra Reszta Świata. Ach....

maxresdefault1

Europa

1. Andreas Köpke (GER, Olympique de Marseille)
12. Frode Grodas (NOR, Chelsea)

2. Heimo Pfeifenberger (AUT, Werder Bremen)
3. Sorin Colding (DEN, Brondby FC)
4. Alessandro Costacurta (ITA, Milan AC)
5. Fernando Hierro (ESP, Real Madrid C.F.)

14. Slavisa Jokanovic (YUG, CD Tenerife SAD)
15. Mehdi Pashazadeh (IRN, Tehran FC)
16. Gordon Durie (SCO, Glasgow Rangers)

Trener
Franz Beckenbauer (GER)

Reszta Świata

1. Jacques Songo'o (CMR, Deportivo La Coruña)
12. Rubén Martin Ruiz Díaz (PAR, Monterrey)

2. Myung-Bo Hong (KOR, Bellmare Hiratsuka)
3. Javier Margas (CHI, Universidad Católica)
4. Nwankwo Kanu (NGA, Inter)
5. Nourredine Naybet (MOR, Deportivo La Coruña)
6. Marcelino Bernal (MEX, Monterrey)
7. Hidetoshi Nakata (JAP, Bellmare Hiratsuka)
8. Adel Sellimi (TUN, Nantes)
9. Gabriel Batistuta (ARG, Fiorentina)
10. Ronaldo (BRA, Inter), kapitan
13. Hussain O. Sulimani (KSA)

11. Antony de Avila (COL, New York Metrostars)
14. David Nyathi (RSA, St. Gallen)
15. Deon Burton (JAM, Derby County)
16. Eric Wynalda (USA, San Jose Clash)

Trener
Carlos Alberto Parreira (BRA)

Strzelcy: De Avila, Ronaldo 2, Batistuta 2 - Lacatus, Zidane

Poniżej skrót spotkania. Zobaczcie sobie co wyprawiał Ronaldo.

Jeśli ktoś chciałby sobie obejrzeć cały mecz to nagranie znajdzie tutaj.

Przy okazji - listę z innymi meczami reprezentacji "Europy" albo "Świata" znajdziecie tutaj i trochę też tutaj.

A ciekawe dywagacje jak mógłby taki mecz wyglądać w 2017 albo 2018 roku znajdziecie tutaj, tutaj i tutaj.

2) Monopoly Isn’t Always What We Think: “Indeed, crony capitalism is a problem in today’s economy. It is possible that the Left and Right could make common cause on this issue. But not by treating market concentration as the proxy for monopoly power. Crony capitalism is by definition politically-connected capital. Without refined measures of identification, renewed antitrust enforcement would likely take disproportionate aim at harmless monopolies, those effectively replicating competitive equilibria, and would overlook markets in which politically well-connected capital exercises real monopoly power.” https://www.lawliberty.org/2018/11/30/monopoly-isnt-always-what-we-think-it-is/

3) After Promising to Fight Foreign Price Controls, New HHS Rule Adopts Them: “Last week, Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary (HHS) Alex Azar announced the proposed creation of an “International Pricing Index.” This index injects foreign price controls into the payment system for Medicare Part B physician administered medicines.” https://www.atr.org/after-promising-fight-foreign-price-controls-new-hhs-rule-adopts-them

4) New Regulations on “Clean Meat” Would Be Detrimental: “I’m writing to encourage Rep. Rob Bishop and the rest of Congress to drop rider SEC 736 from the Farm Bill. This rider would force the USDA to issue new regulations on ‘clean meat’ or ‘cell-based meat,’ even though the USDA and FDA are already working together to oversee the safe production of these foods.” https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/letters/2018/12/03/letter-new-regulations/

6) A Tale of Two 5G Cities - San Jose and Indianapolis: “Indianapolis has cultivated a 5G-friendly culture and will be one of the first major cities to see extensive rollout of the wireless technology of the future. San Jose, on the other hand, saw the equipment needed for 5G as a revenue source and charged such onerous fees that providers have largely ignored the Silicon Valley city.” https://www.realclearpolicy.com/articles/2018/12/04/a_tale_of_two_5g_cities _san_jose_and_indianapolis_110943.html

7) The Fed Seems Determined to Snuff Out Economic Progress: “President Trump's pro-growth tax and regulatory policies are creating the textbook-theory-expected faster economic growth along with the benefits that go with that faster growth. Meanwhile, Federal Reserve policy appears to be focused on preventing these positive economic effects from continuing through 2019.” https://www.realclearpolicy.com/2018/10/23/the_fed_seems_determined_to_snuff _out_economic_progress_39877.html

Alexis, 1950’lerin sonlarında New York’a taşındı ve moda eğitimi aldı. 1960’ların başlarında genç bir kaçak olan Holly Time’s Square’a kadar otostop çekerek geldi. Holly’nin yolculuğu, Lou Reed’in “Walk on the Wild Side” (Vahşi Taraftaki Yürüyüş) şarkısı ve ikonik yeraltı filmlerinde ile ölümsüzleştirilirken, Alexis’in etkisini yarım yamalak kaydedilen trans birey tarihine yerleştirmek biraz daha zordur. Alexis Andy Warhol’un işlerinde yer almak yerine John Vaccaro’nun Theatre of the Ridiculous’unda, Scott Whitman ve Jack Smith’in filmlerinde rol aldı.

Holly ve Alexis’in yolları her zaman kesişiyordu.

Translara Miras Kalan Tarih

Holly (solda) ve Alexis

Bazen bir markette alışveriş sepetimi sürerken veya bir doktorun ofisinde otururken hafif hafif “Walk on the Wild Side”ın sözlerini duyar gibi olurum. Lou Reed’in bariton sesi Holly Teyze’nin hikâyesinin başlancını şöyle anlatıyor: “Holly, Miami’den geldi, ABD boyunca otostop yaptı, kaşlarını yolda kopardı, bacaklarını traş etti, erkekti kadın oldu. ‘Hey bebeğim, vahşi tarafa bir yürüyüş yap’ dedi…” Çevremdeki insanların çoğu neredeyse 50 yıl önce yazılmış olmasına rağmen bu şarkının önemli bir trans birey olan Holly Woodlawn’ın hayatını anlattığını, hatta Holly Woodlawn’un kim olduğunu bile bilmiyor. Bizden önce gelen efsanelerin isimlerini bilsek de bilmesek de bize dokunuyorlar, içimizdeler, DNA’mızı cesaretle besliyorlar, her zaferimizi kutluyor ve her adaletsizlikte bize destek oluyorlar.

Miss Major Griffin-Gracy

[Little Rock, Arkansas]’a geldiğimden beri her şey harika.

Sonunda Las Vegas’a taşındı ve New York City’nin zengin yirminci yüzyıl ortaları trans tarihi uzmanı.

Sheri Payne

Cruz, Johnson’ın ölümü ile ilgili rahatsız edici koşulları araştırdığı belgesel film The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson’daki (Marsha P. Johnson’ın Ölümü ve Hayatı) rolüyle 2017’de dikkatleri üzerine çekti.

Kanun buydu.

[New York’taki] Julius Bar’ı biliyor musun? 1969’un başlarında, Mayıs’ta, “sip in” diye bir şey oldu. Bazı insanlar Julius’a girdiler, eşcinsel olduklarını söylediler ve bir şeyler içmek istediler. İçki servis eden Julius Bar ise baskına uğradı. Buna “sip in” diyorlardı.

Ceyenne Doroshow

Ceyenne Doroshow, trans bireylerin hak savunucusu ve trans seks işçilerine bütünsel destek sağlayan G.L.I.T.S. örgütün kurucusudur. Hayatı boyunca New York’ta yaşayan Doroshow, LGBTIQ+ topluluğu için çalışan birçok kurulda koltuk sahibi ve toplumdaki trans kadınlara yönelik fırsat eşitsizliği üzerine çalışıyor. Doroshow kraliçe Kusursuz Sabrina’nın (Jack Doroshow) kızıdır ve Cooking in Heels (Topuklularla Yemek Yapmak) yemek kitabının ortak yazarıdır.

“Ailen.”

Any Other Way’i yayınladı. Son on yıldır Shane’in işlerine karşı yükselen bir ilgi var. Shane şu an Nashville’de yaşıyor.

Her yerde. Ülke çapında bir rizom gibi. Bir süre o rizomda yaşadım.”

Tiffany Arieagus

Marvell posts revenue of $851 million, expects growth from Cavium      Cache   Translate Page
Marvell Technology Group posted revenue for the third quarter of its fiscal 2019 of $851 million. GAAP net loss from continuing operations for the third quarter of fiscal 2019 was $54 million, or $(0.08) per diluted share. Non-GAAP net income from continuing operations for the third quarter of fiscal 2019 was $222 million, or $0.33 per diluted share. Cash flow from operations for the third quarter was $299 million.

The company noted that quarterly revenue exceeded the midpoint of the guidance it provided on September 6, 2018.

"In the first full quarter operating as a combined Marvell and Cavium team, we completed key integration milestones ahead of schedule, delivered revenue above the midpoint of our guidance, and generated strong free cash flow at 30 percent of revenue. We also expect renewed revenue growth from the Cavium business in the fourth quarter," said Matt Murphy, Marvell's President and Chief Executive Officer. "Looking ahead, we expect the deployment of 5G will accelerate our growth over the next several years as engagements with a growing list of Tier 1 customers continue to build momentum in this major infrastructure transition."

Interview: Liran Zvibel of WekaIO      Cache   Translate Page

Joakim is the resident interviewer for the D Blog. He has also interviewed members of the D community for This Week in D and is responsible for the Android port of LDC .

Interview: Liran Zvibel of WekaIO
WekaIO is a San Jose, CA based startup with engineering inTel Aviv, Israel, that has built Matrix, the world’s fastest file system , in D. Recently, they posted impressive numbers in the IO-500 Node Challenge . Liran Zvibel, the co-founder and CEO of WekaIO, has been a regular speaker at DConf, talking about their use of D at DConf 2015 , 2016 , and 2018 .

WekaIO is an expression of a design goal of D, that you can write your prototype quickly and easily in D, then continue working on the same codebase until it reaches production quality , as opposed to prototyping in a different high-level programming language. Liran took some time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions about WekaIO and their use of D.

Liran Zvibel at DConf 2018

Joakim: Tell us about the enterprise storage market that WekaIO is in. How do you use D in your product?

Liran: Any compute environment has a mix of CPU power, networking, and storage: this is uniform across many organization types and sizes, and whether the infrastructure is in-house (“on premises”) or in the public cloud (“The cloud is just somebody else’s computer,” as they say).

The storage component provides the current state and also the history needed by compute. While compute is stateless (how many times have you rebooted your computer to fix a problem?) and the network is ephemeral, storage must be able to keep its state consistently and coherently while providing enough performance for the compute to do its job (otherwise the running jobs are IO-bound, and nobody likes that).

There are three main types of centralized storage systems:

Block storage systems, that provide the abstraction of a local drive that sits remotely. Several systems may get access to their own “volume” on the centralized system. The AWS equivalent for such a system is Elastic Block Store. These volumes are usually not shared between more than one server, and the reason to use them is failure resiliency, reliability, and performance (also some advanced features such as taking a point in time, backup, integration into a VM environment, etc.). File systems, centralized storage that is also shared, and allows several
servers on the network to access the same data. This is the kind of system
that WekaIO provides. Traditionally, people have turned to block-based solutions if they needed high performance, then created a local file system based on that shared volume, but with WekaIO we show that we enable a shareable file system that is even faster than a local file system over block storage. Object storage solutions, these enable storing objects with reduced semantics (no ability to modify, data stored is only eventually consistent, etc) to enable cost savings, and generally don’t care about performance.

When I review storage systems here, I talk mainly about block-based and file system solutions as object storage is much simpler and is implemented

using different methods.

Requirements for storage systems are:

Reliability Performance (low-latency IOPS and throughput) Features

Traditionally, these systems have a “data path” that cares about reliability and performance, and then a “control path” or “management path” that takes care of higher-level features and making reliability work at a higher level.

For many storage systems, the data path is implemented in some system programming language, such as C or C++, and the management path is implemented in a higher-level language such as python, Java, Go, etc. Our previous company, XIV (that IBM acquired in 2007) used a private version of C that had polymorphism, generic programming, and integrated RPC, for code that was a mixture of XML, C, and weird header files.

At WekaIO, we use the D programming Language to implement both the data path and the control path, as we can use a single language to get both machine-level access with high performance when needed, and a higher-level language for the features.

Joakim: How did you end up choosing D? You mentioned at DConf that you

initially tried a combination of Python and C++.

Liran: The first part of the work we had done on the C++/Python combo was to work on an efficient in-process RPC mechanism between Python and C++, that would

allow us to refer to the same object from C++ and Python in an efficient way. That way the same object could have run in the C++ context when needing performance, and in Python when needing brevity. The idea was to start implementing the system in Python then convert pieces to C++ as needed, where inter-process communication (inter or intra servers) would be done in C++ only. At that time, we had a prototype of the system implemented in Python and we started working on the C++ part, and the RPC definition first.

When we discovered D, we realized we may be able to get a single language to handle both the high-level and performance requirements, and we started by running some pet projects to verify that this was indeed a working language. The next phase was implementing our RPC over D (which was much more elegant than the C++ version), and a tracing system that would allow us to debug (the tracing system was reviewed in my DConf 2015 talk).

The biggest limitation we had initially was the availability of an optimizing compiler, as the reference compiler, DMD, does not provide assembly that is equivalent to LLVM or even GCC when running on modern x86 processors. After DConf 2015, and with the help of David Nadlinger, we were able to get LDC (the D compiler with an LLVM backend) to compile our code and generate results that met our needs.

Joakim: Andrei Alexandrescu, one of the co-architects of the D language, blogged about visiting you in Tel Aviv : how your code is very compact and that you added new features without growing the codebase much. What key features of D do you use to accomplish this and the speed and other benefits of your storage system?

Liran: The strongest part of D is its generic programming. We use generic programming in two ways, that usually are contradictory but with D they actual
