George H.W. Bush made two 1988 campaign stops in McHenry County      Cache   Translate Page
George H.W. Bush visited McHenry County twice while on the campaign trail in 1988.

Former 32nd District Sen. Jack Schaffer helped make those visits happen. The now 76-year-old Cary resident was chairman of the Bush campaign in McHenry County that year, and he also worked on Bush’s state campaign.

When Bush’s campaign staff in Illinois were determining where the then-vice president should make a stop in the state, Schaffer said he asked them to “give McHenry County a shot.”

“I was kind of like a little kid jumping up and down, saying, ‘We want it, we want it!’ " Schaffer said.

Schaffer got his wish. He was in charge of organizing Bush’s visits in March and October that year at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake.

Bush, the 41st president who died Friday, became the first vice president of the U.S. to visit McHenry County when he made a stop March 12, 1988, at MCC, according to a Northwest Herald story at the time.

Bush was accompanied by his wife, Barbara, then-Gov. James Thompson, U.S. Rep. Phil Crane and Air Force Brigadier Gen. Chuck Yeager. At the time, Bush was President Ronald Reagan’s vice president and was campaigning for the Republican bid to succeed Reagan in the White House. His chief rival in the primary was Sen. Robert Dole.

The Northwest Herald reported that the crowd was “well-behaved and enthusiastic,” and seats on the floor were filled with local politicians while residents “scrambled for seats in the bleachers” in MCC’s multipurpose room. Crystal Lake police officers were on hand, and a band from Crystal Lake Central High School provided music for the visit.

During his 10-minute speech, Bush touched on topics such as taxes, better education and the budget deficit.

“I want to be known as the education president,” Bush was quoted saying at the time. “Let’s vow to make America a literate nation by the end of the first term of the next president.”

Schaffer said he had about 10 days to set up Bush’s March visit.

When the Secret Service came in to prepare before the event, they put duct tape on the floor to mark where Bush would walk – even mapping out his route to the restroom, Schaffer said.

"[The] funny part was that Barbara [Bush], could go wherever she wanted," Schaffer said. "She was down in the crowd."

Schaffer recalled that there were a few thousand people at the March event, with hundreds more outside.

The event went so well that Bush returned Oct. 29, 1988.

The Northwest Herald reported that about 2,000 people showed up for the rally.

“I am not going to let that liberal governor divide this nation,” Bush told the crowd at the time, speaking of his opponent, Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis.

The vice president visited Kane County later that day and spoke at a Gilberts sod farm.

“To loud cheers, Bush came down squarely in favor of voluntary prayer in schools, squarely against federal gun control laws, squarely in favor of the death penalty, squarely against more taxes," according to a Northwest Herald story.

Bush also delivered the line that would come back to haunt him in 1992: “I don’t have to say it again, but just read my lips: No new taxes.”

Both times Bush visited, Schaffer said, the future president and his wife were incredibly gracious and well-received by the crowd.

"I’ve always had a great deal of pride in the man," Schaffer said. "I thought he was an outstanding president and lived a life of service [that was] virtually unparalleled."

Free Will Astrology      Cache   Translate Page
December 5–11 by Rob Brezsny

ARIES (March 21–April 19): When I write a horoscope for you, I focus on one or two questions because I don't have room to cover every single aspect of your life. The theme I've chosen this time may seem a bit impractical, but if you take it to heart, I guarantee you it will have practical benefits. It comes from Italian author Umberto Eco. He wrote, "Perhaps the mission of those who love humanity is to make people laugh at the truth, to make truth laugh, because the only truth lies in learning to free ourselves from insane passion for the truth." I swear to you, Aries, that if you laugh at the truth and make the truth laugh in the coming days, you will be guided to do all the right and necessary things.

TAURUS (April 20–May 20): You have a cosmic mandate and poetic license to stir up far more erotic fantasies than usual. It will be healthy for you to unleash many new thoughts about sexual experiments that would be fun to try and novel feelings you'd like to explore and people whose naked flesh you'd be interested to experience sliding and gliding against yours. But please note that the cosmic mandate and poetic license do not necessarily extend to you acting out your fantasies. The important thing is to let your imagination run wild. That will catalyze a psychic healing you didn't even realize you needed.

GEMINI (May 21–June 20): In my continuing efforts to help you want what you need and need what you want, I've collected four wise quotes that address your looming opportunities. (1) "What are you willing to give up in order to become who you really need to be?" —Elizabeth Gilbert. (2) "Leave the door open for the unknown, the door into the dark. That's where the most important things come from" —Rebecca Solnit. (3) "You enter the extraordinary by way of the ordinary" Frederick Buechner. (4) "Happiness is like a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you" Nathaniel Hawthorne.

CANCER (June 21–July 22): I've called on author Robert Heinlein to provide your horoscope. According to my astrological analysis, his insights are exactly what you need to focus on right now. "Do not confuse 'duty' with what other people expect of you," he wrote. "They are utterly different. Duty is a debt you owe to yourself to fulfill obligations you have assumed voluntarily. Paying that debt can entail anything from years of patient work to instant willingness to die. Difficult it may be, but the reward is self-respect. But there is no reward at all for doing what other people expect of you, and to do so is not merely difficult, but impossible."

LEO (July 23–Aug 22): What does "beauty" mean to you? What sights, sounds, images, qualities, thoughts, and behavior do you regard as beautiful? Whatever your answers might be to those questions right now, I suggest you expand and deepen your definitions in the coming weeks. You're at a perfect pivot point to invite more gorgeous, lyrical grace into your life; to seek out more elegance and charm and artistry; to cultivate more alluring, delightful magic.

VIRGO (Aug 23–Sept 22): You know the expiration dates that appear on the labels of the prescription drugs you buy? They don't mean that the drugs lose their potency after that date. In fact, most drugs are still quite effective for at least another 10 years. Let's use this fact as a metaphor for a certain resource or influence in your life that you fear is used up or defunct. I'm guessing it still has a lot to offer you, although you will have to shift your thinking in order to make its reserves fully available.

LIBRA (Sept 23–Oct 22): Libran rapper Eminem is renowned for his verbal skill. It may be best exemplified in his song "Rap God," in which he delivers 1,560 words in six minutes and four seconds, or 4.28 words per second. In one stretch, he crams in 97 words in 15 seconds, achieving a pace of 6.5 words per second. I suspect that in the coming weeks, you will also be unusually adept at using words, although your forte will be potent profundity rather than sheer speed. I encourage you to prepare by making a list of the situations where your enhanced powers of persuasion will be most useful.

SCORPIO (Oct 23–Nov 21): In May of 1883, the newly built Brooklyn Bridge opened for traffic. Spanning the East River to link Manhattan and Brooklyn, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. But almost immediately, people spread rumors that it was unstable. There was a growing fear that it might even crumble and fall. That's when charismatic showman P.T. Barnum stepped in. He arranged to march 21 elephants across the bridge. There was no collapse, and so the rumors quickly died. I regard the coming weeks as a time when you should take inspiration from Barnum. Provide proof that will dispel gossipy doubt. Drive away superstitious fear with dramatic gestures. Demonstrate how strong and viable your improvements really are.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22–Dec 21): Robert Louis Stevenson published his gothic novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in 1886. It was a best seller and quickly got turned into a theatrical production. In the ensuing 132 years, there have been well over a hundred further adaptations of the story into film and stage productions. Here's the funny thing about this influential work: Stevenson wrote it fast. It took him three feverish days to get the gist of it and just another six weeks to revise. Some biographers say he was high on drugs during the initial burst, perhaps cocaine. I suspect you could also produce some robust and interesting creation in the coming weeks, Sagittarius—and you won't even need cocaine to fuel you.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22–Jan 19): A blogger on Tumblr named Ffsshh composed a set of guidelines that I think will be apt and useful for you to draw on in the coming weeks. Please study these suggestions and adapt them for your healing process. "Draw stick figures. Sing off-key. Write bad poems. Sew ugly clothes. Run slowly. Flirt clumsily. Play video games on 'easy.' OK? You do not need to be good at something to enjoy it. Sometimes talent is overrated. Do things you like doing just because you like doing them. It's OK to suck."

AQUARIUS (Jan 20–Feb 18): Aquarian athlete Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player who ever lived. He was also the first to become a billionaire. But when he was growing up, he didn't foresee the glory that awaited him. For example, in high school he took a home economics class to acquire cooking abilities. Why? He imagined that as an adult, he might have to prepare all of his own meals. His ears were so huge and ungainly, he reasoned, that no woman would want to be his wife. So the bad news was that he suffered from a delusion. The good news was that because of his delusion, he learned a useful skill. I foresee a similar progression for you, Aquarius. Something you did that was motivated by misguided or irrelevant ideas may yield positive results.

PISCES (Feb 19–March 20): The Bible does not say that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute or even a "sinner." There's no mention of her sexual proclivities at all. Delusional ideas about her arose in the Middle Ages, instigated by priests who confused her with other women in the Bible. The truth is that the Bible names her as a key ally to Christ and the crucial witness to his resurrection. Fortunately, a number of scholars and church leaders have in recent years been working to correct her reputation. I invite you to be motivated and inspired by this transformation as you take steps to adjust and polish your own image during the coming weeks. It's time to get your public and private selves into closer alignment.

Homework: Imagine that one of your heroes comes to you and says, "Teach me the most important things you know." What do you say? Testify at freewillastrology.com.

A special to the Asheville Citizen from Marshall, Madison County, says a fight occurred on Shelton Laurel Sunday night in which Everett Shelton was shot and supposed to be mortally wounded by James Stanton, who made his escape. At the same time and place Boss Stanton was shot and killed by Baxter Shelton. At the time he was shot he was making a brutal assault on Shelton with a pistol. Shelton first begged for peace but Stanton was determined to fight. The affray is the result of an old feud.

Madison's Last Tragedy
Particulars Of The Double Killing On Shelton Laurel Sunday Night
E.F. Chandley of this city has received a letter from his brother, J.C. Chandley, who lives on Shelton Laurel, Madison County, near the scene of last Sunday night's tragedy.
From the particulars given in the letter it appears that there were five men engaged in the difficulty, which occurred at "Son" Franklin's house. The five were "Boss" Stanton and Everett Shelton, James Stanton and Rod. Shelton. An old grudge had existed between "Boss" Stanton and Baxter Shelton, and when the men met these two agreed to go outside and talk the matter over.
As the disappeared in the darkness Stanton took hold of Shelton's right arm. Shelton said after the tragedy that Stanton snatched his pistol out of his right hand and fired at his head. Shelton, who, it seems, usually carried two pistols, caught a pistol from his left pocket with his left hand and shot Stanton in the breast. Stanton died in 15 or 20 minutes.
At this time James Stanton and Rod. Shelton were standing near the door. Everett Shelton, who was a short distance from them, stepped toward the door. Stanton warned him not to draw his pistol. Shooting then began between the men in the house, and a bullet from Stanton's pistol took effect in Everett Shelton's breast, causing his death Monday morning. Some 15 shots were fired during the fray. James Stanton and Baxter Shelton were slightly wounded. The letter, which was written Monday, said the men had escaped.
The parties to the terrible affair were not brothers, as at first stated. James Stanton is an uncle of "Boss," and the Sheltons are second cousins.

Madison County Outlawry
Not since the days of "Redmond, the Outlaw," has there been such a reign of terror in Western North Carolina, as has existed in the counties of Yancey and Madison for the past few months. Brief accounts of the several high handed acts of lawlessness by George McCurry and Baxter Shelton have been published in the Gazette. It was hoped that the last tragedy, of a fortnight ago, in Madison County, in which Baxter Shelton figured as chief actor, of serious fatalities, in which he would appear. It seems however that the end is not reached. Hardy Merrell, one of the most responsible citizens of Madison County, called at the Gazette office last night, and reported that he had information that Baxter Shelton was still in the vicinity of Laurel, accompanied by a band of lawless men and defying the officers of the law who have warrants for his arrest. It is reported that this band of outlaws are well equipped with arms and are perpetrating various acts of lawlessness within the vicinity where they live to the terror of the citizens. It is also reported that in Yancey County the notorious George McCurry is still engaged in open violation of the revenue laws and defies any and all officers to disturb him in his operations. It is reported on good authority that Baxter Shelton has shot six men since Christmas and is still at large. Mr. Merrell says that the good people of Madison County are indignant at the recent outbreak of lawlessness in that county, and are determined to see that these desperadoes are brought to justice.

Shelton Laurel area

I found these photos online about Shelton Laurel and hiking some trails there. I thought these showed how dense the mountain laurel could be which is where the area gets it's name and why it was remote and isolated. During the War of Northern Aggression there could be snipers and men behind every bush.

Here are photos of mountain laurel.

Surrounded And Captured
Baxter Shelton, Champ Briggs and Jack Shelton Suspected Of The Crime
Baxter Shelton, Champ Briggs and Jack Shelton are no (sic) exected (sic) of being the murderers of Lemuel Jackson near Greeneville last week.
A gentleman who was in the chase after the murderers told a Journal and Tribune reporter of the latest developments in the case. He preferred for personal reasons that his name not be used.
the above named men were followed by bloodhounds many miles into the mountains to a place known as Shelton Laurel, where the laurel bushes grow so thickly that the trail could not be followed further.
The sheriffs of Greene, Hamblen and Cocke counties were among the pursuers. The bloodhound of the sheriff of Cocke county, which is one of the best sleuths in East Tennessee, followed the trail.
The pursuing party was on foot and following the lead of the hounds passed over spots where the Sheltons and Briggs had been seen. Reaching a creek running from the mountains the trail was for a time lost, showing that the fleeing parties had waded the stream.
The hound followed the bank and where the party came out of the creek she took up the trail anew. She went directly to houses of the Sheltons and Briggs in the mountains. Then the trail was taken up afresh and followed to the Shelton Laurels-an almost impenetrable growth of laurel bushes of miles in extent. The case was there given up.
The Journal and Tribune's informant says that the son and son-in-law of the murdered man have turned up and no one longer suspects them of the crime.
Mrs. Jackson was seen at her home, which is a very nice one and told the story of the murder to the Journal and Tribune's informat (sic). The house has iron bars to its windows and is calculated to confirm suspicion that a large sum of money was kept in the house.
Mrs. Jackson had gone to the woodpile on the morning of the murder when she was accosted by three men with blackened faces, one of whom asked for something to eat, while the other two proceeded toward the house.
Lemuel Jackson, hearing the noise, went to the door. As he did so one of the men said, "We've got you this time," and then commanded Jackson to hold up his hands. One hand went up while the other went behind the door for a gun.
Five shots were fired at him. Mrs. Jackson was then told to tell the whereabouts of his money. She was told that if she would stay away from the telephone, which was in the house, and keep buiet (sic), she would not be hurt. Mrs. Jackson then told them that her husband had some money in a secret pocket of his underwear on the inside of his right leg, near the trunk of the body.
Six hundred dollars was thus obtained, and Mrs. Jackson said the two Sheltons and Briggs had been to the house in the summer and that her husband drove them away with a Winchester rifle.

I could not find where they ever arrested the murderers or got any conviction.

How were all these men related? Jack Shelton was born 4/22/1862 in Madison County, NC to Roderick "Rod" Shelton (DOB 5/1825 in Shelton Laurel, Madison County, NC; DOD 5/18/1921 in ? ) and Mary Polly Mercer (DOB 3/1822 in Madison County, NC; DOD 1906 in Madison County, NC). Capture of Pate
The Man Who Stamped A Woman To Death
He Is Taken By Three Men, Who, Spurred By Offer Of Reward, Track Him Into Tennessee
Asheville, N.C., April 23-John Pate, the Madison County desperado, who it is alleged committed one of the most brutal and dastardly murders ever perpetuated in western North Carolina, and who, in company with ten others, escaped from the Buncombe County jail last October has been recaptured and was this morning brought here and again placed behind lock and key.
The capture was made in the Bald Mountains, in Union County, Tennessee, early Sunday morning by three Madison county men who had heard of Pate's whereabouts and were seeking to obtain the $300 reward offered for his capture. Jim Shelton, Baxter Shelton and Grant Shelton. The men, as quick on the trigger and desperate of chances as Pate himself, heard that the outlaw was hiding in the fastnessess of the Bald Mountains, and Friday morning they left Madison County over the rough trail, going horseback and on foot. House after house was searched in the vicinity of his hiding place and finally the man was located in a dilapidated shack which had every appearance of being deserted, with open windows and crumbling roof. Pate was asleep on a bunk, as was also another man lying in the opposite side of the room, and the alleged murderer was awakened by the flash of a lantern.
He instantly sprang for a table across which were lying two shot guns and some knives, but was as quickly covered and ordered to halt. He and his companion made further effort to reach the weapons but were sternly warned, and while two men outside kept the inmates of the room in check. Baxter Shelton batered (sic) down the door. An entrance having been effected, the men bound their prize and set out to retrace their slow and tortuous way. They stated here today they had slept almost none in the past three days, but that their prisoner had given them no trouble.
Pate appeared unconcerned today. He stated that he has ever since his escape lived in the Bald Mountains.
It has been two years since Pate is alleged to have killed Mrs. Johanna Crowder of California Creek, Madison County, murdering her in a brutish manner that has scarcely a parallel in Madison's criminal annals. It is alleged that he attacked the woman in a lonely place near her home and that he literally stamped her to death. When she was almost in a dying condition he forced from her a promise to state that her condition was due to an accident and compelled her to return to her home. She died shortly after, having stated, however that Pate had killed her. Pate then fled, living on what is aptly known as the Wolfe's Den until about eight months afterwards when he was captured by United States Marshal Barnes and a posse. He was lodged in the Madison jail was then brought to Asheville for safekeeping and subsequently made his escape in the jail delivery.

Shooting At White Rock
The Little Rock baseball team came over from Halewood Friday and played White Rock two games on Saturday. The morning game was 14 to 3 in favor of White Rock. The evening game was 12 to 3 in favor of White Rock.
As we were all coming from the game, I, in company with Baxter Shelton and one of the Little Rock boys, was passing Gordon Gilbert's house. Gordon shot at Baxter. Then Baxter got off his horse and fired on Gilbert and then started toward home. Gilbert then fired several times, one shot hitting Shelton on the right leg, 6" above the knee. Gilbert shot at Shelton as long as he could see him. The boys had some trouble a few days ago over the store account.

Notice that Gordon Gilbert was shooting at Baxter Shelton in 1911 and now Harm Gilbert is with Shelton when Champ Briggs murders him in 1912. Wonder if they were related?

Shot To Death Old Feud Case
Story of Killing Of Baxter Shelton By Champ Briggs Comes From Madison
W.S. Rice of Madison County was in Asheville today and told of a homicide that occurred on Laurel in No. 2 township Saturday afternoon in which "Champ" Briggs shot and almost instantly killed Baxter Shelton. Mr. Rice stated that the killing was the result of an old drudge (sic) about politics; that the two men had met to talk the matter over when the trouble occurred.
According to his statement Shelton had handed his pistol to Briggs to show that he meant no harm. Then, he stated, Briggs began firing at a man named Gilbert, who was with Shelton. Gilbert ran and then Briggs turned the pistol on Shelton shooting him in the chest and neck. Both men were prominent in the section. They were men of property and each had a store.
It is said that Briggs made no attempt to escape and is now in jail at Marshall.

Let's take a moment to look at who Champ Briggs was. Champ Harrison Briggs was born 7/29/1880 in Erwin, Unicoi County, TN to John Logan Briggs (DOB 2/28/1848 in Yancey County, NC to John Lee Briggs and Anna Melissa Garland; DOD 11/22/1934 in Unicoi County, TN)  and Mary Briggs (DOB 8/1849 in TN to Benjamin Franklin Briggs and Nancy McFarland; DOD ? in ? ). Champ Briggs MARRIED A SHELTON, Vianna Shelton. Vianna Shelton was born 4/13/1880 in NC to William Riley Shelton (DOB 12/11/1836 in Shelton Laurel, Madison County, NC; DOD 2/3/1896 in Shelton Laurel, Madison County, NC) and Mary Polly Riddle (DOB 1839 in Shelton Laurel, Madison County, NC; DOD 1875 in Shelton Laurel, Madison County, NC). that means that Vianna Shelton and William Baxter Shelton were brother and sister. Baxter's parents were also William Riley Shelton and his third wife Mary Polly Riddle. The only 2 children of William Riley Shelton and his third wife, Mary Polly Riddle, were Vianna Shelton and William Baxter Shelton. So Champ Briggs was Baxter Shelton's brother-in-law! I'm surprised this isn't mentioned in the newspaper reports?!? I worked on this family for two days trying to figure out the relationships. If you read this blog post thoroughly you will see that the newspaper reports are saying some things and not saying others. I think there was a lot of inner-community and inner-family conflicts and politics. Basically everyone was afraid of the bullies in the community of Shelton Laurel. I think even the sheriffs, judges, newspapers were afraid of them. People in the community probably didn't talk, or even lied, because they had to live in the community. They had to go home and if the police couldn't, or wouldn't, stop them, then they could be the target next. And, someone in the community might take care of the problem in a little mountain justice? As out of control as Baxter Shelton evidently was, is it possible that Champ Briggs was administering a little justice? Maybe that's why he got acquitted of murder? Or was Champ Briggs the bully and everyone was just afraid of him so let him get away with it? The newspaper accounts have Champ Briggs admitting on the stand that he had shot (killed?) 15-22 men since he'd moved from Tennessee to the Shelton Laurel community of Madison County. I can only speculate based on the newspaper reports. I can't really judge. It sounds like they both were pretty messed up and caused a lot of trouble and pain.

Homicide In Madison Co.
Champ Briggs Kills Baxter Shelton Over Political Grudge
Asheville, May 6-W.S. Rice, of Madison County, here today told of a homicide in Laurel, No. 2 township, Saturday afternoon, in which Champ Briggs fatally shot Baxter Shelton. The trouble was an old political grudge. The men had agreed to talk the matter over and Shelton handed Briggs his pistol to show friendliness. Rice says that Briggs first fired at the man who was with Shelton, and then fired twice into Shelton, who died instantly. Briggs made no effort to escape. He is in Madison County jail. Both are prominent locally.

Briggs Case Goes To The Jury Today
Some Of The Lawyers Have Presented Arguments
T.S. Rollins, for Prosecution, and Congressman Gudger, for the Defense Remain To Be Heard
Although Superior Court adjourned yesterday from three o'clock until five in the afternoon so that the jury could attend the lecture of William Jennings Bryan, more progress was made in the trial of Champ Briggs, for the alleged murder of Baxter Shelton, than was hoped for by the attorneys at any time before the case was taken up. After several witnesses testified as to the character of the defendent and the deceased, argument was taken up by the attorneys in the case and when court adjourned last night only two attorneys remained to be heard before the jury will received their charge by Judge B.F. Long.
Guy Roberts was the first attorney to address the judy (sic) for the prosecution and for some time he reviewed the testimony of the chief witness, Harmon Gilbert, the only eyewitness to the tragedy. Mr. Roberts emphasized the fact that it had been testified that Briggs had shot Shelton with his own gun.
P.W. McElroy was the first attorney to speak in behalf of the prisoner and Mr. McElroy made an eloquent plea for the man who is charged with the murder of Shelton. Mr. McElroy featured in his speech the testimony of Briggs himself, who swore that he was forced to kill Shelton in self defense.
Solicitor Robert R. Reynolds began his address to the jury before court adjourned at one o'clock and he outlined the law on the subject of self defense. Mr. Reynolds made a plea for the conviction of Briggs upon the grounds that he is one of the most notorious gunmen of the state. He told the jury that in the interests of justice they were under obligations to every citizen of the state to render a verdict of guilty. Mr. Reynolds had not finished his speech when the court adjourned for Bryan's lecture.
When court reconvened at five o'clock the attorneys seemed to be willing to make short addresses and and each of the lawyers summed the points of his argument up very briefly. J.E. Swain followed Mr. Reynolds with a short argument for the defense. W.W. Zachary of Brevard then made an address on the legal side of the self defense question and also took up some of the testimony. Mr. Zachary said there was no plausible grounds for the plea of self defense in the testimony. None of the attorneys seemed to lay particular stress on the testimony of Briggs who testified for several hours in his own behalf. They deprecated the testimony of the defendant, because he was interested in the matter while it was said that Gilbert, the star witness for the state was entirely disinterested. On the other hand the attorneys for the defense claim that Gilbert was an accomplice of Sheltons and came with Shelton to Briggs' home for the purpose of raising trouble.
Thomas S. Rollins will close for the prosecution this morning with the longest of the speeches and Congressman J.M. Gudger will address the jury for the defense. The case will probably go to the jury after the charge by Judge B.F. Long, about noon.

Kept Pistol In His Room At Jail
Asheville, Dec. 18-That Sheriff Buckner of Madison County, allowed him to keep a pistol in his room at the jail, allowed him to eat at the family table and allowed him to drink whiskey whenever he so desired were the startling statements made on the witness stand yesterday by Champ Briggs, who is on trial here for the alleged murder of Baxter Shelton several months ago. Briggs case was transferred to Buncombe County from Madison because the State insisted that he could not get a fair trial in the latter county.
Sheriff Buckner has not yet taken the stand, and so has had no chance to either confirm or deny the charges made by Briggs. Mr. Buckner is the same sheriff who was recently severely reprimanded by Judge Boyd in Federal court here for arresting a witness and taking him back to Madison county before the Federal court had released the witness. At the time Judge Boyd delivered a severe lecture on the rights of State officials to interfere with Federal cases and only a quick apology saved Sheriff Buckner from serious consequences.
Briggs and Shelton quarreled so it is testified, over political differences and it finally led to the killing of Shelton. Briggs on the stand yesterday, claimed that he shot in self defense, although he admitted having shot six other men in the past twenty two years since he moved to Madison county. He says he has shot at about fifteen men in that time.
About fifty witnesses for the defense remain to be heard.

Hickory Democrat, Hickory, NC, 1/2/1913, Pg 2
Champ Briggs, acquitted in Asheville for the killing of Baxter Shelton, of Laurel, Madison County, testified that he was the star boarder at the county jail of Madison as long as he remained there. He said that Sheriff W.M. Buckner allowed him to keep his gun with him in his cell, drink all the whiskey he wanted and eat at the table with the sheriff and his family.

Now what happened to Ida Bell Franklin? She got into trouble herself. I found these newspaper reports. In the articles it states that Ida Bell Franklin was a "fast friend" of Persada Shelton until they both fell in love with the same man.  But if this is the same Ida Franklin, Ida Bell Franklin was born 1875 and Persada Shelton was born 1891 so there was 16 years difference in their ages.

Persada Shelton was born 5/2/1891 in Madison County, NC to John Robert Shelton, Jr. (DOB 3/16/1862 in Madison County, NC; DOD 3/14/1937 in Madison County, NC) and Nancy Gentry (DOB 12/25/1865 in NC; DOD 12/24/1931 in ? ). If you look back in this post you will see her father mentioned earlier, John Robert Shelton, Jr. was the son of John Robert Shelton, Sr. who was the son of David Eli Shelton.

'What can we say?' French bishops cautious in response to ‘yellow vest’ protests      Cache   Translate Page

Paris, France, Dec 4, 2018 / 09:35 am (CNA).- French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced Tuesday morning that the government would suspend the imposition of a proposed fuel tax increase for six months. The planned increases, originally set to take effect in January, have been at the center of two weeks of demonstrations nationwide, including rioting in Paris.

Catholic leaders have been cautious in their reactions to the demonstrations, expressing sympathy for those bearing the brunt of economic reforms but stopping short of supporting the “yellow vest” movement which has led to cars being burned in the streets of the capital.

Bishop Gilbert Aubry of the Diocese of Saint-Denis de la Réunion, on the small island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean, has been the most forthright in addressing the situation, which has also affected the French territory.

In an article released on local media, Bishop Aubry said while civil unrest and violence were unacceptable, the wider economic climate had to be considered.

“We have 40% of our population living below the poverty line and we have 24% unemployment. Some say they have nothing to eat at the end of the month. This is reality,” Aubery wrote on 21 Nov.

The planned tax, which would have meant a further 6.5 cent tax increase on a litre of diesel and 2.5 cents per litre on gasoline nationwide, is the latest in series of price hikes which have seen fuel costs increase by about 23 percent in the last year. Tighter emissions standards for cars were also meant to be imposed from January. The measures have been suspended for six months in an attempt to quell the civil unrest.

Earlier this year, the government of President Emmanuel Macron brought in a 7.6 cent-per-litre “carbon tax” on fuel as part of the government’s green agenda.

Aubery suggested that the violence seen both on the island and on mainland France is linked in part to a consumerist society, in which people already in tight economic circumstances react to images of unattainable prosperity.

“Consumerist society is exacerbated by advertising. As mirrored dreams cannot be realized, [people feel as though] there is nothing left to lose. These vandals [casseurs], they will attack the symbols of this consumerist society: cars and temples of consumption.”

While condemning the violence, the bishop said thought must be given to its underlying causes.

“We condemn the destructive violence, the riots, and in doing so, we must search for the causes of this violence as well as the necessary remedies,” he wrote.

Aubery also said that it was important not to blame “young people” for the violence which has seen national landmarks like the Arc de Triomphe defaced.

“We cannot speak about young people in a general way and say ‘young people organized the riots.’ Vandals are uncontrollable elements and agitators who benefit from a troubled situation. The vast majority of those we call young people are not vandals,” Aubrey wrote.

According to Le Croix, a French-language magazine, many bishops and Catholic groups find themselves caught between condemning the out-of-control protests, while remaining sympathetic to the economic pressures causing them.

“There is some pressure on bishops to take a position on the yellow vests. But what can we say?” La Croix quotes Bishop Xavier Malle of Gap and Embrun as saying on social media.

The same article goes on to quote Jérôme Deschard, president of the Christian Retirees Movement, as expressing a cautious level of “solidarity” with the protestors and sharing the wider concerns about the decline in purchasing power for those on a low income.

The protesters have been dubbed “yellow vests” as many of the demonstrators wear the high-visibility vests which are required to be carried in all cars under French law.

Ever wanted the inside scoop on crashing that exclusive party, getting better than average dope, and spending the night with someone you'd be ashamed to be seen with the next morning?

Filmmaker Paul Sapiano answers your questions on these and many other critical areas of the party lifestyle in this satiric comedy. Presented in part as a faux-documentary and in part as the story of a typical night in the life of a handful of Los Angeles nightlife mavens.

The Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down offers "useful" advice on getting into the club, scamming free drinks, tipping the bar staff, dealing with uncooperative drug dealers, talking your way into an all-star after party, how to attract women by pretending to be gay, and getting rid of last night's pickup in the cold light of the morning.

The Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down received its world premiere at the 2006 Los Angeles Film Festival.

With continent’s population set to soar, agriculture chief Gilbert Houngbo stresses need to make rural life profitable

Economic migration from Africa to Europe driven by poverty could double in the next decade unless urgent investment is made in job creation for young people in rural areas, the head of a UN financial body has warned.

The global population is forecast to reach 9.9 billion by 2050 – a 29% increase – with most of that growth in Africa, where the population is expected to double to 2.6 billion.

Review: Washington Black      Cache   Translate Page
George Washington Black is an 11-year-old slave on a Barbados plantation. His life changes drastically when his new master's brother takes him under his wing as an assistant for his scientific endeavors. Instead of working in the fields, Wash now spends his days seeing the world through Titch's eyes, as well as learning to read and develop his talent for drawing. But he never feels entirely comfortable; the relationship between the two is certainly unconventional and destined to fall apart sooner or later. That day comes when a man is killed and Wash is blamed. Titch and Wash flee in Titch's hot air balloon and set off on an adventure that will take them around the world to London, Antarctica, and Morocco.

There were parts of this book that reminded me of Elizabeth Gilbert's The Signature of All Things because both books follow a person who was not expected to pursue science in their time. Wash learns about weather and creatures all over the world and later uses his knowledge to sketch and paint the wildlife and even collaborates with making the first aquariums. But there is always that feeling of uncertainty--even in places that are supposedly friendly to free black people, one wrong word or careless moment could mean the end of Wash's life. His relationship with Titch is the thing that took him away from the horrors of slavery, but it also haunts Wash as he wonders if it is possible for his mentor and father figure to think of him as anything other than a worthy cause.

Washington Black is a sprawling adventure that takes readers around the world. Edugyan renders time and place with beautiful specificity and the reader feels as if they could journey up the hill to Titch's balloon and watch the plantation below or see the endless expanse of Arctic snow for the first time. But the thread that runs throughout the entire story is that there is no safe place to be a black person in the 19th century--you can never truly be seen as just a neighbor, a friend, a lover, a scientist, or an artist because of the color of your skin.

Waymo Launch

  • Waymo has officially launched in commercial self-driving service in Phoenix.
  • The service is called "Waymo One."
  • It will be opening initially just to early riders who have been testing the service.
  • Waymo drivers will continue to supervise the Chrysler Pacifica minivans as Waymo One is rolled out.

Waymo is finally hitting the road for real.

After racking up 10 million driverless miles in a decade of history, Alphabet's autonomous technology rolled out commercially in Phoenix on Wednesday.

The launch was low-key — Waymo is limiting initial ridership to a Phoenix group of 400 people that has been testing the service — but the ride-hailing business has a new name. Sort of.

"Today, we're taking the next step in our journey with the introduction of our commercial self-driving service, Waymo One," John Krafcik, Waymo's CEO, said in a statement.

"We’ll first offer Waymo One to hundreds of early riders who have already been using our technology. Over time, we hope to make Waymo One available to even more members of the public as we add vehicles and drive in more places. Self-driving technology is new to many, so we’re proceeding carefully with the comfort and convenience of our riders in mind."

Critically, at this juncture, customers won't yet a see an empty, robot-driven Chrysler Pacifica minivan with a Waymo logo pull up when they summon a ride via the Waymo smartphone app.

Waymo Launch

"At first, Waymo-trained drivers will supervise our Waymo One vehicles," Krafcik said.

The app-based service will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Riders "can use it to get around several cities in the Metro Phoenix area, including Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert," Waymo explained, adding that they'll "see price estimates before they accept the trip based on factors like the time and distance to their destination."

Waymo is one of two fully autonomous ride-hailing services that have planned to launch in 2018 and 2019 — the other in General Motors' Cruise. Valuations for both companies have risen dramatically in the past year, as investors have assessed the potential for driverless taxi services. Cruise is now worth $14.6 billion, and Morgan Stanley has argued that Waymo would be worth $175 billion.

My Sister's Intended (Serendipity Book 1), by Rachael Anderson

For as long as Prudence can remember, it has been understood that her sister will one day wed the eldest son of their nearest neighbor. Such an alliance will benefit both families and bring a great deal of joy to all parents involved.

Unfortunately, Prudence has never been able to feel as joyful. She believes her sister is mad to consider marrying a man she hardly knows, even if he will one day make her a countess. Titles and wealth shouldn't factor into matters of the heart, and as an aspiring romance novelist, Prudence cannot fathom how anyone could even think of settling for less than love. She certainly wouldn’t, and she doesn't want her sister to either.

Unable to stand by and do nothing, Prudence sets out to help the awkward couple discover the best in each other with the hope that they will eventually find love. What she neglected to foresee, however, was the possibility that she might fall in love with Lord Knave herself.

The Headmaster's Wife, by Thomas Christopher Green

Like his father before him, Arthur Winthrop is the Headmaster of Vermont's elite Lancaster School. It is the place he feels has given him his life, but is also the site of his undoing as events spiral out of his control. Found wandering naked in Central Park, he begins to tell his story to the police, but his memories collide into one another, and the true nature of things, a narrative of love, of marriage, of family and of a tragedy Arthur does not know how to address emerges.

Luminous and atmospheric, bringing to life the tight-knit enclave of a quintessential New England boarding school, the novel is part mystery, part love story and an exploration of the ties of place and family. Beautifully written and compulsively readable, The Headmaster's Wife stands as a moving elegy to the power of love as an antidote to grief.

American Heiress: The Wild Saga of the Kidnapping, Crimes and Trial of Patty Hearst, by Jeffrey Toobin

From New Yorker staff writer and bestselling author of The Nine and The Run of His Life: The People v. O. J. Simpson, the definitive account of the kidnapping and trial that defined an insane era in American history:

On February 4, 1974, Patty Hearst, a sophomore in college and heiress to the Hearst Family fortune, was kidnapped by a ragtag group of self-styled revolutionaries calling itself the Symbonese Liberation Army.

The weird turns that followed in this already sensational take are truly astonishingthe Hearst family tried to secure Patty's release by feeding the people of Oakland and San Francisco for free; bank security cameras captured "Tania" wielding a machine gun during a roberry; the LAPD engaged in the largest police shoot-out in American history; the first breaking news event was broadcast live on television stations across the country; and then there was Patty's circus-like trial, filled with theatrical courtroom confrontations and a dramatic last-minute reversal, after which the term "Stockholm syndrome" entered the lexicon.

Eat Pray Love 10th-Anniversary Edition, by Elizabeth Gilbert

In her early thirties, Elizabeth Gilbert had everything a modern American woman was supposed to want—husband, country home, successful career—but instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed by panic and confusion.

This wise and rapturous book is the story of how she left behind all these outward marks of success, and set out to explore three different aspects of her nature, against the backdrop of three different cultures: pleasure in Italy, devotion in India, and on the Indonesian island of Bali, a balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence.

Know Concussion Signs for Winter Sports Winter sports are underway, and with a recent increase in national attention on the possible dangers of head trauma for athletes, it is important for coaches, parents and players to recognize symptoms of a concussion and also help lessen their likelihood of occurring. “Because concussion can affect thinking, the person who suffered the injury might not realize there is a problem,” said Dr. Kathryn Gloyer, a primary care sports medicine physician with Penn State Health. “Be aware of the symptoms of concussion so you can recognize a possible injury in yourself or others, especially young athletes. A concussion is a brain injury resulting from a traumatic force to the head. Concussions can be caused by getting hit in the head with a ball, colliding with another person, falling down or any other incident that delivers a jolt or blow to the head, according to Gloyer. “These forces damage brain cells and cause chemical changes in the brain.” Symptoms of a concussion can show up right away or days later. They can include: Dizziness Confusion Balance problems Mood or personality changes Problems thinking clearly Headache Blurry vision Nausea or vomiting Sensitivity to noise or light Inability to recall what happened before or after the incident   If the injured person loses consciousness, has unequal pupils, has seizures or experiences a worsening of symptoms, seek immediate medical help; these could be signs of a more serious brain injury. “If you suspect that someone has a concussion — especially a child who is not old enough to describe symptoms — make sure he or she sees a health care provider,” Gloyer said. An individual with a concussion may seek care either at an emergency room, urgent care center or at their regular provider’s office. Your provider may order neurological imaging based on the results of simple tests to your memory and concentration to rule out a more serious problem, as CT/MRI scans are typically normal in people with concussions. Some patients might need to stay overnight in the hospital for observation. For a mild concussion, treatment includes physical and cognitive rest. “Give the body a break from sports and other strenuous activity, and allow the brain to rest by limiting reading and similar tasks,” Gloyer said. “A person with a concussion should be able to get adequate rest; and the caretaker should monitor for worsening symptoms.” Once cleared by their provider, athletes should return to their sport gradually, starting with light activity and working up to vigorous play. “If a player returns to activity before the body heals from concussion, a second injury could cause prolonged or worsened symptoms, or second-impact syndrome, a rare and potentially fatal condition in which another concussion causes rapid and severe brain swelling,” Gloyer said. It is impossible to refrain completely from activities that might cause a concussion, since anything from walking down stairs to participating in sports can lead to a fall or collision. However, Gloyer says common sense precautions can lessen the risk. These include: Wearing your seatbelt in vehicles and putting children in age-appropriate safety seats Removing throw rugs and other tripping hazards for seniors Using safety gates at the top of stairs when young children are present Making sure playground surfaces are soft Wearing a helmet or other protective gear indicated for your sport   While protective gear, such as mouthguards and helmets, does not prevent concussion, it does help to protect players from fractures, bruises and lacerations. Be sure that helmets fit properly and are not damaged. Gloyer says anyone who suffers a head injury should see a medical professional before returning to activity. The future is here: Waymo One, a self-driving taxi service by Alphabet's self-driving company Waymo, has officially launched

Unfortunately, to paraphrase sci-fi prophet William Gibson, this future is very unevenly distributed. The service will first be available to "early riders" — people who've already used Waymo technology — and only in Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert, which are all cities near Phoenix, Arizona.

And the cars will actually have a human in the driver's seat — Waymo-trained drivers who will supervise the cars, at least at first.

Forgotten, underrated and underseen erotic thrillers from the 90's      Cache   Translate Page

One thing I don't think I talk enough about is just how much I love the 90's. Granted, I was just a kid back then but I loved everything about it - the music - remember, you could turn on MTV or VH1 and there were actual music videos there? - the clothes, the spectacular hair and the movies that were released back then.

One very distinctive kind of movies we got from the 90's were (mostly) female-led thrillers, usually featuring wild sex scenes, a lot of casual nudity and truly disturbing subject matter. In other words three things we don't see often, if at all, in American movies these days.

There were few attempts to recreate the magic after 2000 - The Resident, awful movie which at least captured the whole elegant tall building with creepy elevators vibe, Chloe which was a mess and of course Obsessed which served us pristine heroine and purely evil villain. They will never bring the genre back because there's this perception that it demonizes women - however Paul Feig did a great job in A Simple Favor this year - ridiculous story, great femme fatale, some kinky stuff and yet he avoided backlash because instead of male co-lead there was a female co-lead who was quite likable in traditional sense

What I observed while making that list is that the actresses from it sort of disappeared which isn't the case for the actors starring in those films. It really shows you how ageist and sexist Hollywood is towards women. Linda Fiorentino and Bridget Fonda completely vanished, Madeline Stowe, Rebecca de Mornay and Drew Barrymore had to look for work in TV and we all read about the problems Ashley Judd and Annabella Sciorra faced. Hopefully, this turns around soon because the amount of talent featured on this list is incredible.

So here comes the list of some of the very underrated films from the 90's. Films like Basic Instinct and Wild Things which are still popular to this day and often written about won't be featured here.

In chronological order: (companion list)

Poison Ivy (1992)
Who can forget the iconic scene of Drew Barrymore, one of the symbols of 90's rebellion, on a swing, with her incredible hair flowing in the wind? The film follows nerdy teen Sylvie (Sara Gilbert) who befriends sexy and spontaneous Ivy (Drew Barrymore). Very soon Ivy stars to focus the attention of Sylvie's father and mother (Tom Skeritt and Cheryl Ladd) on her and things turn murderous. The film is incredibly entertaining and the friendship between Sylvie and Ivy is, at least at first, very charming. The sex scenes in the film are still quite shocking, considering that at the time the movie was made Drew was 16 years old and Skerrit was over 40 years her senior.

Single White Female (1992)
Insecure and brokenhearted Ally (Bridget Fonda) is forced to look for a roommate after her boyfriend cheats on her. Enter Hedy (Jennifer Jason Leigh) - seemingly sweet, charming and friendly girl Ally's age. But when Ally and her boyfriend reconcile and Hedy has to move out, it begins to down on Ally that Hedy's innocence and sweetness were all for show. One thing that is very interesting here is that at least at first Hedy is completely justified to feel hurt because of Ally's reckless actions. I think in part those 90's films were so compelling because often times the hero really deserved the trouble coming their way - perhaps best illustrated by Michael Douglas having an affair with Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. Spoiler warning - this one features extremely unpleasant scene involving a dog.

The Hand that Rocks the Cradle (1992)After her humiliated husband kills himself, an embittered pregnant widow (Rebecca De Mornay) loses her child. Then she embarks on a mission of vengeance against a woman (Annabella Sciorra) who she thinks is responsible for her husband's death. The 90's thrillers had something that is very rare in that genre these days - a villain that you understand and you root for, at least at first. Rebecca De Mornay's performance is in many ways what Pike's work in Gone Girl could have been - she is wronged and you can understand why she wants her vengeance and feels angry about the world, all of that while there is such an amazing mix of innocence and cunning going on inside her. And again, the protagonist is not perfect - who hires nanny this hot? Or the one telling you she cannot have her own kids? That's like a huge warning sign. The film features one of the most clever children I've ever seen in film (played by Madeline Zima in her debut) and also shows the all too familiar world where women suffer because of men's mistakes.

Sliver (1993)
This film is utter trash but it is entertaining - it also features Enigma's awesome song "Age of Loneliness" as well as Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy", albeit the latter is featured in sex scene that is incredibly awkward because of Stone's moans that should have the guy stop what he was doing and ask if she is OK or just straight up call the exorcist. Enigma is featured in another movie from the list - Single White Female, doesn't that band just scream the 90's? And that's not the only similarity - there's also a tall, glamorous building in which shady things happen. Oh and goddess Polly Walker shows up and she serves absolute looks!

The Crush (1993)
Alicia Silverstone was one of the most famous 90's actresses and she has a fair share of cult classics - one of them being this one. The film is bad but it is so much fun because it's purely absurd - there's a scene where she keeps yelling as she chops lemons with a butcher knife in the middle of the night. Fifteen years old (at the time of the making of the film) Silverstone in her feature film debut, plays fourteen years old Darian who has titular crush on a young journalist (Cary Elwes). After he doesn't want to be anything more than her friend, she makes his life a living hell. The film is pure camp and trust me - it features the greatest punch in cinematic history.

Kalifornia (1993)Brad Pitt plays murderous and feral hick in relationship with a sweet, young girl played by Juliette Lewis. Michelle Forbes and David Duchowny play a couple who go on a rod trip trying to write a book about famous serial killings. They split the cost with the "charming" trash couple, unaware that one of them is the actual killer. The film, though not the best, has really cool cinematography and very good 90's soundtrack. Also this is the nastiest Pitt has ever been. We're not talking 'hot' in any way. He is just plain repulsive in this film.

Blink (1994) Emma (the always stunning Madeline Stowe) is a blind violist. She was blinded at the age of 8 when her mother smashed her face in the mirror. She has a surgery that restores her eyesight. Shortly after surgery, when her eyesight is still not working properly - and get this - she sees things a day after they happened (which is apparently a legit medical thing), she sees a guy who is a serial killer, making her the only witness. The film features Aidan Quinn, unsurprisingly playing a detective who falls in love with our heroine and surprisingly playing a jerk of a character. The great thing about the film is the cinematography that shows what Emma sees in a very cool way. And don't worry - her seeing dog is fine in the end in spite of one really distressing scene. The one thing I hate about 90's thrillers is that the pet is always hurt - or worse - in those films.

China Moon (1994)This film (actually filmed in 1991, but stuck in a limbo for few years) features Madeline Stowe playing Rachel, a woman trapped in loveless and violent marriage to her husband (Charles Dance). And then detective Kyle Bodine (Ed Harris) shows up and of course falls in love with her. He is willing to do anything for her, including getting rid of her abusive husband. Bonus - young Benicio Del Toro is also here, even at the beginning of his career playing characters that are shady as fuck.

The Last Seduction (1994)A true classic of the genre, immortalized even more by being referenced in an early Sex and the City episode. Linda Fiorentino (what happened to her? She completely disappeared!) is a revelation as a cold, calculating femme fatale Bridget Gregory who uses the men around her with such ease and cruelty you can't take your eyes off the screen. She steals her husband's drug money and runs away to a little town where she tries to lay low as her husband frantically tries to find her. There she seduces a sweet guy whom she manipulates in all kinds of ways. Believe me, even Amy Dunne would lose a battle of wits with this woman.

Never Talk to Strangers (1995)
Rebecca De Mornay plays a psychiatrist who deals with criminals daily, evaluating whether they are really insane or just pretending. She lives alone, she is single and she has a cat. When she is buying wine she meets a hot stranger (Antonio Banderas, come on, we all know he could get it back then) and begins a romance with him. Of course very soon it turns out her new lover may be very similar to the criminals she is dealing with. The cat unfortunately ends up dead and there is A TWIST that's so insane it almost works.

The Passion of Darkly Noon (1995)
After the death of his strictly religious parents, young man named Darkly (Brendan Fraser) gets lost in the woods. A truck driver, Jude, rescues the exhausted man, who has only a bible for comfort. He brings him to the house of Callie (Ashley Judd) and Clay (Viggo Mortensen), two lovers who live in the forest. While Clay is away in the forest Callie nurses Darkly back to health, and he develops an obsession with her. When Clay returns home and Darkly sees the two lovers kiss, it is too much for him. This film is utterly insane. It starts in a ordinary way but after a while surreal things begin to happen that one has to witness because they are impossible to describe. And Ashley Judd is an absolute goddess here.

Jade (1995)
Linda Fiorentino is back - and singlehandly saves the movie from being a complete disaster - in this utter trash which stars David Caruso of all people in the main role. There's some politics, some lurid sex stuff and an absolutely hilarious hit and run scene. If you liked her in The Last Seduction you may wanna check it out, even though it's nowhere near as good.

Bound (1996)
Made by Lana and Lilly Wachowski this incredibly steamy thriller stars Jennifer Tilly as Violet and Gina Gershon as Corky - two lovers who rip the mafia off in quite an elaborate plan. The film is beautifully shot, incredibly stylish and has a great score. It's easy to see how the directors went on to make The Matrix after that. This is the best film featured on that list and if you haven't seen it yet you should definitely check it out.

Diabolique (1996)
This is a remake - that was torn to shreds critically - of a beloved classic and although it is really bad comparing to the original, it is one of the most rewatchable movies for me. Sharon Stone plays a slutty teacher and her outfits alone are a reason to watch it and Isabelle Adjani plays the abused wife with glorious hair and amazing - in your face "I'm an ex-nun!" - jewelry. Chazz Palminteri plays her jerk of a husband and Kathy Bates shows up as a sassy, fierce detective. There's also J.J. Abrams there playing a nameless character. If that's not enough to sell this movie, I don't know what is.

U Turn (1997)
Oliver Stone's insane, filthy and gorgeously shot thriller has been on my list of favorite movies ever since I saw it. Featuring the astounding cast the film follows Bobby (Sean Penn), a down on his luck criminal. Bobby arrives to the God forsaken little town of Superior and due to a chain of circumstances he is stuck there until his car is fixed. There he meets beautiful Grace (Jennifer Lopez) but since he needs money to pay off his debts he agrees to kill her on behest of Grace's husband Jake (Nick Nolte). The film is nasty, twisted, funny and very dark.

Dark Harbor (1998)
A bickering couple (Alan Rickman and the wonderful Polly Walker) drive to catch the last ferry to their island retreat. They stop, only to find a young boy (Norman Reedus, long before The Walking Dead fame) battered and bruised on the side of the road. An offer of summoning the police firmly rejected, the two help the boy as best they can although it certainly means missing the ferry... and so starts this thriller: a tale of twisted sexual attraction and ulterior motives. There's a scene with Reedus in Marilyn Monroe drag singing "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" and it's insanely disturbing.

A Perfect Murder (1998)This remake of Hitchcock classic features the husband (Michael Douglas) plotting the murder of his wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) after he finds out she has been having an affair with a handsome artist (Viggo Mortensen). Plot twist? He hires the lover to kill the wife, hoping that money will be enough to throw away whatever the artist feels for her. This is slick and very fun to watch thriller, greatly aided by James Newton Howard's gorgeous score and Viggo Mortensen's insanely good looks and some awesome moves.

The textbook view of alternative splicing      Cache   Translate Page
As most of you know, I'm interested in the problem of alternative splicing. I believe that the number of splice variants that have been detected is perfectly consistent with the known rate of splicing errors and that there's no significant evidence to support the claim that alternative splicing leading to the production of biologically relevant protein variants is widespread. In fact, there's plenty of evidence for the opposite view; namely, splicing errors (lack of conservation, low abundance, improbable protein predictions, inability to detect the predicted proteins).

My preferred explanation is definitely the minority view. What puzzles me is not the fact that the majority is wrong () but the fact that they completely ignore any other explanation of the data and consider the case for abundant alternative splicing to be settled.

This bizarre situation is reflected in the textbooks, which means we are training an entire generation of undergraduates to ignore critical thinking and simply adopt some strange ideas that have permeated the scientific literature. I recently purchased a textbook that illustrates my point. It's Genomes 4 (2017), the fourth edition of a book by T.A. Brown that was first published in 1999. The relevant section is in chapter 7 in a section titled "Gene numbers can be misleading."

The section begins by saying that scientists expected humans to have a lot of genes because humans are "the most sophisticated species on the planet." It points out that while we have more genes than yeast, fruit flies, and chickens we have fewer genes than most plants and only about the same number as the nematode Caenorhaditis elegans. The author then offers an explanation,
These gene numbers lead us into an important aspect of genome biology. Before the human genome was sequenced it was anticipated that there would be 80,000-100,000 protein-coding genes, this number remaining in vogue up to a few months before the draft sequence was completed in 2000. This yearly estimate was high because it was based on the supposition that, in most cases, a single gene specifies a single mRNA and single protein. According to this model, the number of genes in the human genome should be similar to the number of proteins in human cells, leading to the estimates of 80,000-100,000. The discovery that the actual number of protein-coding genes is much lower indicates that it is possible for an individual gene to specify more than one protein. This is the case for many of the discontinuous genes in the human genome. When introns were first discovered, it was thought that a discontinuous gene would have just one splicing pathway, in which all the exons are joined together to give a single mRNA. We now know that many discontinuous genes have alternative splicing pathways, which means that their pre-mRNAs can be processed in a variety of ways, to give a series of mRNAs made up of different combinations of exons. Each of these genes can therefore direct synthesis of related but different proteins. ... Alternative splicing is relatively common in vertebrates, with 75% of all human protein-coding genes, representing 95% of those with two or more intron's, undergoing alternative splicing, giving rise to an average of four different spliced mRNA's per gene. Alternative splicing also occurs in lower eukaryotes, but it is less prevalent. In C. elegans for example, only about 25% of the protein coding genes have alternative splicing pathways, with an average of 2.2 variants per gene

Because of alternative splicing, the question "How many genes are there?" has no real biological significance, as the number of genes does not indicate the number of proteins that can be synthesized and hence is not a measure of the coding capacity of a genome. A better measure of the biological complexity of an organism is provided by categorizing the genes, including the splice variants according to function.
This is the consensus view of textbook authors, science journalists, and probably most of the researchers in the field of gene expression although some of the details may differ. In this case, for example, the author claims that the high gene count was based on thinking that humans have 80,000-100,000 different proteins. That's not a rationale for the false expectation of gene number that I've seen before.1 I don't know where it comes from but I do know that current estimates of proteome complexity do not support such a claim. I direct your attention to a recent paper by Tress et al. (2017) who looked at the mass spec data and concluded,
Alternative splicing is well documented at the transcript level, and microarray and RNA-seq experiments routinely detect evidence for many thousands of splice variants. However, large-scale proteomics experiments identify few alternative isoforms. The gap between the numbers of alternative variants detected in large-scale transcriptomics experiments and proteomics analyses is real and is difficult to explain away as a purely technical phenomenon. While alternative splicing clearly does contribute to the cellular proteome, the proteomics evidence indicates that it is not as widespread a phenomenon as suggested by transcript data. In particular, the popular view that alternative splicing can somehow compensate for the perceived lack of complexity in the human proteome is manifestly wrong.
This is not something that was only discovered recently so the textbook author (T.A. Brown) cannot be excused on the grounds that the data came out after his book was in press.

Putting that aside, lets think about what we might be teaching undergraduates. The underlying assumption is that primitive eukaryotes produced only one or two different protein isoforms per gene but over time there was selection for more complexity by evolving alternative splicing to create more isoforms culminating in humans where an average of four different protein isoforms are made per gene. Think about what that means by considering typical housekeeping genes like those involved in glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, amino acid biosynthesis and a host of other metabolic pathways. Think about the genes for all the subunits of RNA polymerase, the subunits of the electron transport complexes in mitochondria, and the 80 or so proteins of the ribosome. The genes for all these proteins have multiple splice variants in the databases so it follows that there must have been selection for each of them to produce, on average, three protein variants in addition to the standard conserved protein seen in bacteria. It's very difficult to imagine why humans would need three additional versions of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase or citrate synthase where each new variant is missing a block of internal amino acid residues or has an extra stretch of amino acids inserted into the middle of the structure. It's even more difficult to imagine why such altered versions of the subunits of complex structures could provide a selective advantage. Nevertheless, this is exactly what we are teaching these days in our undergraduate courses.

I don't get it.

Let's assume that alternative splicing is restricted to just a small number of genes as I claim. How would scientists respond to that if they still think there's a problem reconciling the number of genes with the idea that humans are "the most sophisticated species on the planet"? Would it create such a serious problem for them that they are reluctant to consider the possibility? Is this an idea that undergraduates can't handle so we have to protect them from even thinking about it?

1. Here's the explanation given in the original publication of the draft human genome sequence by Lander, et al, (2001, p. 898).
Previous estimates of human gene number. Although direct enumeration of human genes is only now becoming possible with the advent of the draft genome sequence, there have been many attempts in the past quarter of a century to estimate the number of genes indirectly. Early estimates based on reassociation kinetics estimated that the mRNA complexity of typical vertebrate tissues to be 10,000-20,000, and were extrapolated to suggest around 40,000 for the entire genome. In the mid-1980s, Gilbert suggested that there might be about 100,000 genes, based on the approximate ratio of the size of a typical gene (~3 × 104bp) to the size of the genome (3 × 109bp). Although this was intended only as a back-of-the-envelope estimate, the pleasing roundness of the figure seems to have led to it being widely quoted and adopted in many textbooks (W. Gilbert, personal communication).

Dio riconoscerà i suoi..      Cache   Translate Page

Dio riconoscerà i suoi.

Everyone has pretended to be a pirate at some point. On the coast of Cornwall, a band of tenderhearted pirates celebrates the coming of age of Frederic, who was mistakenly apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday. Now, Frederic has vowed to devote his life to the extermination of piracy - until a ludicrous leap year snag threatens to keep him apprenticed to the pirates for life! Throw in a bevy of beauties, a brash Pirate King, the delightfully stuffy Major-General Stanley and you've got what The New York Times calls "an endearing production with high musical standards and spirited performances".

The NYGASP production of Pirates has been a staple of the Company's repertory for over 40 years, but each season brings fresh new faces joining with seasoned veterans - creating an exciting blend of experience and novelty. This season's cast includes lovely sopranos Sarah Caldwell Smith and Katie Dixon as Mabel, expert comedians James Mills and David Macaluso alternating as pattering Major-General Stanley and pirate side kick Samuel, Angela Christine Smith as ditsy nursemaid Ruth, David Auxier as a limber, but timid, Sergeant of Police, Matthew Wages as the brash Pirate King, tenors Alex Corson and Carter Lynch as duty bound pirate apprentice Frederic, mezzos Amy Maude Helfer, Abigail Benke, Emily Wright, Hannah Holmes and Merrill Grant as the Major- General's daughters adventurous Kate, concerned Edith, and dancer Isabel.

Tickets for The Pirates of Penzance are priced from $25 - $95 with 10 % off for seniors and half price tickets for children 12 and under. Information and tickets can be obtained by calling (212) 772-4448 or by visiting www.nygasp.org.

NEW YEAR'S EVE WITH NYGASP

The best of NYGASP will perform their personal G&S favorites followed by the Company's signature tour-de-force challenge - audience requests from the G&S repertoire performed impromptu. Topped off with a champagne toast to the New Year and a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne! The festivities take place at Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space (2537 Broadway at 95th Street) at 7:30pm. Advance reservations are required - $75 (10 % off for seniors and half price for children 12 and under) and can be made by calling 212-769-1000 or at: www.nygasp.org

Doctor: Attitudes on vaccinations improve over years, some parents still skeptical      Cache   Translate Page
Fear surrounding vaccinations has lessened over the past decade, but some parents still choose not to follow doctors' recommendations, a Northwestern Medicine medical director said.

Health agencies such as the Center for Disease Control and the Illinois Department of Health unanimously recommend parents vaccinate their children against diseases that can be fatal such as measles, polio and the flu. The agencies also recommend adults stay up to date on vaccinations for illnesses such as the flu and tetanus.

But some parents worry that the drugs can cause unintended side effects and harm to their children.

Laura Bianconi is the medical director of pediatrics at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital. Bianconi has 24 years experience as a pediatrician, and she said there has been no valid research that links vaccinations to autism, autoimmune disease, chronic disease, neurological problems or developmental problems.

"These theories have been put forth as to why you shouldn’t vaccinate," Bianconi said. "But there is no proof at all, and it has been studied. What we know about vaccines is they prevent illness that can cause death. I have been vaccinating kids every day of [my] career. I am confident that vaccines are safe and effective at preventing the diseases we don’t want kids to get."

Between birth and age 18, children and adolescents are expected to receive about 14 vaccinations, some in multiple doses over the early months and later years, to prevent a variety of diseases, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics immunization schedule.

Some medical practices, including Bianconi's, won't treat patients who don't vaccinate, she said.

In most Illinois cases, students must present an immunization record prior to registering for public school unless a medical or religious exemption waiver is obtained, according to the Illinois State Board of Education.

No vaccination works 100 percent, which is why everyone that can get vaccinated, should, said Bianconi.

"There is a risk to kids if they are around an unvaccinated person that has an illness," Bianconi said. "And there are some kids who can't get vaccinated because they have immune system problems or some disease. ... They would be at risk if that unvaccinated person caught a disease and brought it into the school."

Vaccines typically have a 96 percent to 99 percent efficacy rate, though the medicine may not work well for people who have immune system problems, she said.

Huntley High School recently saw an outbreak of the mumps, a virus that can be prevented by vaccinations. A student came down with the mumps in October and an additional three cases were discovered in November, according to the health department.

In the 2017-18 school year, 29 students at the school were not vaccinated against the virus, which means the school still had a more than 99 percent immunization compliance rate, according to ISBE records.

Amanda Spitzer, a mother who lives in Gilberts, said she follows doctors orders when it comes to vaccinating her children.

"Some people claim that vaccinating or not vaccinating is a matter of personal choice. That drives me a little crazy because diseases don’t only target people who refuse to vaccinate themselves or their children," she said. "It is socially irresponsible to spread diseases to this population. It is unreasonable to expect unvaccinated people and their unvaccinated children to exclude themselves from public life. ... so it seems that mandatory vaccination is the best solution."

Marengo mother of four Angela Johnson said she prefers a more holistic approach to preventing and combating illness. She said her decision to abstain from vaccinations came from a lot of research, which included the attendance of a CDC symposium on vaccines.

"I believe our natural immunity is the best immunity of all," she said.

The family sees a holistic health chiropractic doctor for many of their medical needs and use supplements, pro- and pre-biotics, enzymes and vitamins to build up that natural immunity, she said.

"I believe in what I am doing for my children," she said. "I believe their immune systems are great and strong."

Johnson now homeschools her school-age kids, ages 13 and 8, after facing immunization requirement obstacles in the public school system, she said. Her older two children are 18 and 24.

Johnson said her concerns surrounding the issue included the growing list of required vaccines and objection to the materials used in the drugs itself such as aluminum and fetal tissue that initially came from abortions.

"I don't want to put mercury and aluminum in my kid," she said. "I don't care if it's all around. I don't want to put it in the blood stream. I don't need to."

The Varicella (chickenpox), rubella, hepatitis A, one version of the shingles vaccine, and one preparation of rabies vaccine are all made by growing the viruses in fetal embryo fibroblast cells, which were initially obtained via two abortions in the 1960s. Those cells have been continually cultured in labs and no further sources are needed, according to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's vaccine education center.
