Netflix Paid $100 Million to Keep Streaming Friends      Cache   Translate Page

This weekend, some Netflix users noticed something concerning: There was an “Availability Until 1/1/19” label on the Friends page. Many alarmist tweets later, pop star Hayley Kyoko, aka “Lesbian Jesus,” stepped in and on Monday the people finally got the response they were waiting for:

But it appears that Friends was at one point in jeopardy of leaving the service at the end of the year. According to The New York Times, Netflix will pay around $100 million for the rights to continue streaming the show through the end of 2019, which is owned by WarnerMedia. This is quite an increase from the $30 million that Netflix paid previously.

Friends fans can feel secure that the show will remain on the streaming service for all of next year, but prospects for Netflix users hoping to re-watch the classic ‘90s series for much longer may be disappointed. Now that AT&T has acquired Time Warner, the company has a plan to start a streaming service of its own, and AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said at an investor conference on Tuesday that Friends constitutes “content we definitely want on our platform.” He also said that the current agreement between Netflix and AT&T is nonexclusive, meaning that both services could theoretically end up streaming the show in 2020.

Teams expect Suns to make Trevor Ariza available      Cache   Translate Page
Having signed a new contract as a free agent over the summer, Trevor Ariza won’t become trade-eligible until Dec. 15. However, rival clubs expect the Suns to make him available after that date, according to Marc Stein of The New York Times (Twitter link). As Stein outlines (via Twitter), teams with interest in Ariza have been hoping that the Suns will take the same route with the veteran forward that they did with Tyson Chandler, simply buying him out and letting him reach free agency. However, Phoenix is expected to field trade inquiries on Ariza in an effort to secure at least one asset in return. Ariza, who is on a one-year, $15M contract with the Suns, isn’t off to a particularly hot start this season, shooting a career-worst 37.2% from the field through 21 games. However, he continues to play solid defense and knock down three-pointers at a respectable rate (35.7%), which will make him appealing to contending teams in need of wing help. His expiring contract should also be favorable to franchises lookin
Report: Teams expect Trevor Ariza to be top player available for trade      Cache   Translate Page
The Phoenix Suns have been one of the worst teams in the NBA for several years and are headed in that direction again this season, and that likely means Trevor Ariza will be wearing a new uniform at some point in the near future. Marc Stein of the New York Times reports that rival teams expect Ariza to be the top player available when players who signed free agent contracts are eligible to be traded on Dec. 15. Many executives have hoped the Suns would buy out Ariza like they did with Tyson Chandler, but they appear to be committed to finding a trade partner. Ariza, 33, is averaging 9.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game this season. He’s still an effective and experienced role player who was a key contributor for some good Houston Rockets teams before he signed with Phoenix, so you can understand why contending teams would want to add him. There was some talk that one of LeBron James’ ex-teammates did him a favor by waiving Chandler, but teams are going to have to be patient with Ariza.

Grip on Sports: The M's that were will not be the M's of next year      Cache   Translate Page

A GRIP ON SPORTS • Nothing is final until it’s final. Didn’t Yogi Berra say that? Well, he should have. I do know one thing. If Yogi had been a Mariner this season, Jerry Dipoto would have traded him and his malapropisms to the Nationals or someone. And thrown in money to help cover his contract. Read on.

••••••••••

• If you are a Mariner fan, you might want to pull out a legal pad and start making notes. The roster the franchise has today looks nothing like the one it had on opening day last season. And probably doesn’t resemble the one it will have on opening day next year.

The Robinson Cano Epoch is over. So is the Jean Segura Era. And the eras of Mike Zunino, Edwin Diaz and almost any other recognizable player you can name.

Dipoto blew it all up. To quote an old TV show, he blew it up real good.

James Paxton? Gone. James Pazos? Gone. Juan Nicasio? Gone.

It’s Dec. 4, the Winter Meetings aren’t even here yet and Dipoto has shed most of the M’s biggest contracts, most-veteran players and even a couple of youngish, under-control guys. In return he’s picked up a few overpaid vets – and a bunch of prospects, a couple of which cause some baseball people to drool uncontrollably. In other words, Dipoto is rebuilding the roster, the farm system and the fans’ expectations.

Will any of those things bounce back? Not this season. It’s going to be a get-folks-experience year.

Oh sure, Kyle Seager will still man third base. We think. It seems, considering how he’s fallen off the planet the past two year, it would be hard to get anyone to take his contract. So he's the starting third baseman.

Dee Gordon will be at second. Mitch Haniger should be in right field, though he’s a tradeable asset and Dipoto seems to be like a guy in Vegas on a hot streak right now. He is in such a zone he may throw Haniger into a trade without even knowing it.

If Haniger survives, we know he’ll be backing up Marco Gonzales, Mike Leake and Wade LeBlanc as they make starts. Maybe even Felix Hernandez, the franchise’s senior member, will bounce back. There is no chance he will be traded, but the other three guys could be.

You just never know with Jerry and this franchise-changing spree. Stay tuned. There is probably more to come.

Gonzaga: The No. 1 team in the country strengthened its hold on the top spot in this week’s Associated Press basketball poll. Jim Meehan has all the numbers. … Josh Perkins is this week’s WCC Player of the Week. … So is Chandler Smith. Jim Allen has that news within a second look at the Bulldogs’ win over Stanford, which propelled the women into the Associated Press Top 25. … The men have a rivalry game coming up this week. Well, sort of. Washington has been so inept in the series its not much of a rivalry. … Around the WCC, despite some visible votes of confidence recently, BYU’s Dave Rose may need to win some games to stay in his position.

WSU: No, Gardner Minshew is not headed to New York as a Heisman finalist. He didn’t make the cut for the final three, this year’s number of invitees. But he did win the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, an award for the best upperclassmen quarterback. Theo Lawson has stories on both. … The Pac-12 announced its all-academic teams and the Cougars were well represented. Theo runs down those selections. … Theo also explains his AP basketball poll picks. He should. UCLA? C’mon man. (Actually, I agree with his picks but I had to give him a hard time about at least one of them.) … Finally, Theo spoke with Larry Weir about a lot of subjects for the latest Press Box pod.

Elsewhere in the Pac-12, we start with football, a sport in which the conference’s reputation is in tatters, so to speak. It cost WSU and it showed in the attendance and ratings in the title game. … It also showed in how the public reacted to Larry Scott. … The conference announces its awards today. Gardner Minshew seems like a lock as offensive player of the year, but will Kyle Whittingham outpoint Mike Leach as coach of the year? … Colorado is still looking for a coach. … Arizona State will play its bowl game without its best player. … Arizona didn’t make a bowl. That is no surprise. … Ohio State is announcing today former Utah coach Urban Meyer is retiring (again). … Utah faces a familiar-looking foe in the Holiday Bowl. … In basketball, California is helping out the other Bay Area colleges by playing, and in most cases, losing to them.

Seahawks: The Hawks’ playoff chances have improved, but they need to keep winning of course. Yes, there are games with Arizona and the 49ers, but this week’s home battle with Minnesota is important as well, what with the Vikings also vying for a wild-card spot. … The Hawks will be without D.J. Fluker, but get Mychal Kendricks back. … A lot went right against the 49ers.

Mariners: The roster has undergone such a makeover, if I were a free agent, I wouldn’t sign unless I got a percentage of the program sales for the first homestand next season.

The Pollies Broaden Out Their Southern Rock Sound on 'Transmissions'      Cache   Translate Page

None

Much gets made of Pollies leader Jay Burgess's Muscle Shoals, Alabama roots. And that makes plenty of sense; there's probably no way a musician grows up in the cradle of a world-changing sound without absorbing some of that famous vibe. But like a lot of modern Southern rock, the Pollies can't easily be tied down to any one school, be it big city, small town, college town, back porch, Shoals vibe, Florida swamp rock, or Memphis indie-by-way-of-Stax. In fact, if you want to namecheck Memphis, start off with Big Star and even that might be more from osmosis than obsessive listening.

To put it more succinctly, there's a lot going on throughout the Pollies' third full-length album Transmissions. Opener "You Want It" is a heady mix of bouncy riffs, breakneck drumming, slightly ghostly background vocals, and pulsing sound effects bookending a squealing psychedelic middle section. Then, just like that, they're on to the straightforward Pettyish jangle and soaring harmonies of "Hold on My Heart". That makes a nice transition into the pointed guitar work of "Summertime Suicide" and the soaring harmonies of "Fell in Love".

None

The Pollies, though, had already established their more straightforward indie rock bonafides on their first two records. What immediately sets Transmissions apart are songs like "Knocking at My Door", which eases in on buzzing sound effects that give way to some classic rock bounce. Throughout the song's five minutes, the Pollies repeatedly blow up the groove in a way that makes you wonder if what's knocking at the door isn't so welcome. The last half is largely a swirl of bangs and noise, but not in a way that feels needlessly self-indulgent. The trippy Beatle-esque tendencies that had lurked in the background of the Pollies' first two records are now stepping out into the open. As a result, centerpieces like "Knocking at My Door" and album closer "Love Is All We Want" sound like the logical culmination of what the Pollies have been working toward.

One reason the Pollies pull off such ambitions can likely be credited to the fact that they've been living on the road honing their chops and getting tighter as a band by backing acts like Dylan LeBlanc and Nicole Atkins. Burgess, along with bassist Spencer Duncan, drummer Jon Davis, and keyboardist Clint Chandler are operating at a new, higher level as a band on Transmissions. Lyrically, Burgess's recent marriage seems to play a large thematic role, so there's plenty of the Pollies' trademark prettiness on display, but its the album's Wilco-esque flights of exploration that make the ears realize the Pollies are venturing somewhere new.

If you've been following the Pollies for a while, there might be a few twists and turns on Transmissions that startle you in the way parts of the record sound like they're coming through a ghostly veil while other parts are right there in front of you. But there's nothing that feels out of place. This sounds like where the band has been trying to go all along and they now have the skills to get there.

NYC Volunteers Prepare to Offer Moral Support to Migrants on the Border       Cache   Translate Page

Sierra Chandler is a student at Rutgers Law school in Newark. At 26-years-old, she said she's too young to remember the Civil Rights movement. But she was reminded of it when she heard U.S. authorities used tear gas on migrants rushing toward the border last month.

"You grow up hearing those stories and you think, 'in that moment would I be the person who buses down to the Jim Crow South to defend people?,'" she asked.

For her, the answer is yes. Which is why she joined about 50 people attending a class on Saturday morning organized by the New Sanctuary Coalition for those who want to assist migrants at the border. In a classroom at NYU Law School, lawyers and immigration activists spoke about how asylum works, and what role volunteers will play if they choose to work on the Mexican side of the border — where migrants are waiting in long lines to be processed by Customs and Border Protection (CPB).

"If you're an asshole to a CBP officer, the CBP officer will take it out on your friend,"warned Sara Gozalo, of New Sanctuary Coalition, which refers to immigrants as "friends."

New Sanctuary leaders emphasized their goal is not to make waves but to accompany asylum-seekers at a difficult juncture and to add more humanity to the process. They are also not allowed to provide legal assistance.

"If someone says to you, for example, 'is this a good asylum claim?' You should say we're going to have a lawyer review all the information," attorney Nathan Yaffe told the morning class.

Those on the Mexican side, in Tijuana, will work at a pro se legal clinic run by New Sanctuary. They'll talk to the migrants and write down their information so lawyers can offer them advice on the asylum process, such as what type of visa they may qualify for. They'll also educate migrants about their rights. But the migrants will be representing themselves.

The Department of Homeland Security has warned that it's against the law to coach an individual on a false immigration claim. But Ravi Ragbir, executive director of the New Sanctuary Coalition, said that's not an issue.

"We don't need to do that, the story's horrible," he said, referring to people fleeing violence and killings in Central America. He said it's up to border agents to decide whether their fears are credible enough to remain in the U.S. until an immigration judge makes the final decision.

However, as an immigrant rights advocate said he disagreed with an asylum law that doesn't allow people into the country if they're escaping solely for economic reasons.

"If your child is crying because they don't have something to eat, what would you do?," he asked.

Volunteers are also gathering in San Diego to help those who cross get wherever they're going. Ragbir said they'll be housed in churches on both sides of the border. By housing them, he said, that means "sleeping bags on the grounds, in the sanctuary, in the assembly halls."

Faith leaders from New Sanctuary and other groups have already started visiting the border, before gearing up for a wave of volunteers expected to arrive in mid-December. Some even officiated a few weddings.

Douglas Concha said he'll be among that first wave of volunteers going to San Diego this week to set things up. The 39-year-old army veteran is the child of Colombian immigrants. He said he joined the protests at Standing Rock two years ago, against the Dakota Access Pipeline, and he's worried about the situation at the border.

"With the teargassing thing the other day, there is a genuine concern with me that the situation could escalate like at Standing Rock into violence that would only harm the migrants more than anyone."

Concha said he can spare three or four weeks away from his work at a nonprofit. But 51 year-old Kelly Smith said she can only go for a week in January. For her, she says, it's about bearing witness.

"I don't speak Spanish, I have a lot of limitations," she said, adding that if she's just there to be a friendly face that will be enough.

"What’s novel about 'Friends,' or what must seem so to a certain subset of New York teenagers of whom so much is expected, is the absence among the six central characters of any quality of corrosive ambition."      Cache   Translate Page
"The show refuses to take professional life or creative aspirations too seriously. What does Chandler Bing actually do? I was never entirely sure. In the series’ ninth season he is an advertising intern. On 'Girls”' you have writers who are trying to be Mary Karr; on 'Friends' you have actors who want to be on 'Days of Our Lives.' The dreamscape dimension of 'Friends' lies in the way schedules are freed up for fun and shenanigans and talking and rehashing, always. 'In the back of our minds we know it’s unrealistic,' Maggie Parham, a 15-year-old who lives on the Upper West Side, told me. The characters 'have nice apartments and lots of free time but there is something about that perfect lifestyle that is fun to watch,' she said, adding, 'They all work, but they seem to be able to get out of work easily.'... [A 17-year-old girl said] 'All they do is hang out in a coffee shop or a really nice apartment... It’s the ideal situation.'"

From "‘Friends’ Has New BFFs: New York Teenagers" (NYT). That's from 2015, but I'm reading it today because it's linked in a new article in the Times, "Netflix Will Keep ‘Friends’ Through Next Year in a $100 Million Agreement," which notes that "the show has found an especially receptive audience on Netflix, where it became available in 2015."

And here's a New York Magazine article rom 2016, “Is ‘Friends’ Still the Most Popular Show on TV?”
The world of Friends is notable, to modern eyes, for what it encompasses about being young and single and carefree in the city but also for what it doesn’t encompass: social media, smartphones, student debt, the sexual politics of Tinder, moving back in with your parents as a matter of course, and a national mood that vacillates between anxiety and defeatism...  Which is why you might expect that Friends, like similar cultural relics of that era, would be safely preserved in the cryogenic chamber of our collective nostalgia. And yet, astonishingly, the show is arguably as popular as it ever was — and it is popular with a cohort of young people who are only now discovering it....
I myself am just watching the show for the first time, going at a rate of about an episode a day, and just getting to the end of Season 3.
Between its various syndicated airings, the show still draws a weekly audience of 16 million in the U.S., a big enough viewership to make it a viable hit on current network TV (and that’s not even including streaming)....

Michelle Cerutti, who lives in Florida, has been a Friends superfan since she was a little kid, even though she was only in kindergarten when the show first aired. “I’m 27 years old now,” she wrote to me in an email. “This connection has never changed.” For a long time, she would fall asleep to DVDs of the show. “When I was 14 years old, going on 15, I went through depression, fights with my own friends, a roller coaster of emotions,” she writes. “The ONLY thing that kept me from crying were the six New Yorkers that I grew up getting to know.”

More than once, when asked about the appeal of the show, a 20-something quoted back to me an iconic line that Monica says to Rachel in the pilot: “Welcome to the real world. It sucks. You’re gonna love it.” They explain that they’ve adopted the line as a kind of generational motto. Which the line was intended to be, sort of, except for a different generation. No matter — the notion has an enduring appeal, especially given that, for 20-somethings now, the real world seems suckier than ever. “The ’90s were a great time,” says Chris Mustacchio, who is 24, works in New York, and estimates he’s seen every episode of Friends more than five times. Like more than a few people I talked to, he describes habitually falling asleep to the show. “If you think about it, back then there was little conflict. It was pre-9/11. You could smoke on airplanes, you could smoke in restaurants. Bill Clinton was in the White House. He was the best president of all time!”...

“Part of the appeal is wish-fulfillment,” says [the show's co-creator Marta] Kauffman of the show’s continued appeal to younger viewers. “And another part of it is because they’re on social media all the time, so I believe they crave human contact. They crave intimacy, and intimate relationships. They’re looking at screens all the time.” The world of Friends is recognizable, yet devoid of today’s most ardent anxieties. On Friends, “in their free time, they all get together in the coffee shop to chat and catch up,” says Stephanie Piko, a 21-year-old fan of the show. “Where nowadays we’ll catch up really quickly, but everyone’s always on their phones. Back then, it’s more of a person-to-person relationship, instead of through technology.”....

I asked Elizabeth Entenman, a 27-year-old Friends fanatic, if you could make a version of Friends about the 20-somethings of today. “No,” she said, “because you wouldn’t find six people doing nothing in the same room.”...

Paulina McGowan, who is 21... says, “It would be awesome to be alive back then, when everything didn’t seem so intense. It just seemed really fun.”

Waymo has launched its commercial self-driving service in Phoenix — and it's called 'Waymo One' (GOOGL)      Cache   Translate Page

Waymo Launch

  • Waymo has officially launched in commercial self-driving service in Phoenix.
  • The service is called "Waymo One."
  • It will be opening initially just to early riders who have been testing the service.
  • Waymo drivers will continue to supervise the Chrysler Pacifica minivans as Waymo One is rolled out.

Waymo is finally hitting the road for real.

After racking up 10 million driverless miles in a decade of history, Alphabet's autonomous technology rolled out commercially in Phoenix on Wednesday.

The launch was low-key — Waymo is limiting initial ridership to a Phoenix group of 400 people that has been testing the service — but the ride-hailing business has a new name. Sort of.

"Today, we're taking the next step in our journey with the introduction of our commercial self-driving service, Waymo One," John Krafcik, Waymo's CEO, said in a statement.

"We’ll first offer Waymo One to hundreds of early riders who have already been using our technology. Over time, we hope to make Waymo One available to even more members of the public as we add vehicles and drive in more places. Self-driving technology is new to many, so we’re proceeding carefully with the comfort and convenience of our riders in mind."

Critically, at this juncture, customers won't yet a see an empty, robot-driven Chrysler Pacifica minivan with a Waymo logo pull up when they summon a ride via the Waymo smartphone app.

Waymo Launch

"At first, Waymo-trained drivers will supervise our Waymo One vehicles," Krafcik said.

The app-based service will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Riders "can use it to get around several cities in the Metro Phoenix area, including Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert," Waymo explained, adding that they'll "see price estimates before they accept the trip based on factors like the time and distance to their destination."

Waymo is one of two fully autonomous ride-hailing services that have planned to launch in 2018 and 2019 — the other in General Motors' Cruise. Valuations for both companies have risen dramatically in the past year, as investors have assessed the potential for driverless taxi services. Cruise is now worth $14.6 billion, and Morgan Stanley has argued that Waymo would be worth $175 billion.

The future is here: Waymo One, a self-driving taxi service by Alphabet's self-driving company Waymo, has officially launched

Unfortunately, to paraphrase sci-fi prophet William Gibson, this future is very unevenly distributed. The service will first be available to "early riders" — people who've already used Waymo technology — and only in Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert, which are all cities near Phoenix, Arizona.

And the cars will actually have a human in the driver's seat — Waymo-trained drivers who will supervise the cars, at least at first.

Book safes are an age old way to stash one’s treasures–the key to a safe, a private document, a flask, cash, jewelry and of course… secret love letters. And you can use them while traveling to hide your ipod, back up cash, or other valuables from would-be thieves. And of course if you end up wrongfully imprisoned, they work as an excellent place to stash a rock hammer for tunneling your way to freedom. Not only are book safes fun to possess, they also make a cool, unique gift.

First some considerations when looking for a book safe. The whole point is to conceal something from prying eyes, so be careful what book safe you choose. You don’t want it to stand out in your book case. If this is for yourself, choose a book that will fit in on your shelf. If you’ve got a shelf full of new mystery paperbacks, a large vintage medical textbook will look suspicious and out of place. Additionally, consider picking a book that people aren’t likely to pull off your shelf out of curiosity. Think “The Economic History of Kazakhstan” instead of “The Secrets of Better Sex”. But if you’re giving the book safe as a gift, choose a volume that suits the personality and interests of the intended recipient. For Whom the Bell Tolls for Dad; Nancy Drew for little sis.

Now about my book safes, what makes them different?
I usually use upcycled used books, never new. This allows the wear and tear of a book add to the charm of your safe while lending a bit of charm to your collection. Besides, cutting up a new, unread book defeats the original purpose of that literary masterpiece. Think of it as a second life for a book that has been enjoyed.
Unlike many home crafted book safes, I have added a few construction design upgrades of my own. Learning from my woodworking experience I experimented and came up with the following improvements. (Technically, a book is “wood” so this is not too much of a departure from what I usually craft.
#1 – These safes have been crafted with “natural” page edges. Meaning that I do not just coat the outer, exposed page edges with a layer of glue. My safes actually appear to be an unaltered book when closed. You can actually thumb the pages and they separate along the edge, just like a regular book.
#2 – Internal reinforcements. (This book is too thin for pins) In larger, thicker books, I have found a way to insert metal pins that keep the book safe square and ridged. These metal pins are totally concealed. Some other book safes tend to “droop” since so much of the internal page material removed to create the cavity.

Note: Any props in the pictures are NOT INCLUDED. Electronics, cash, jewelry and other items are used to demonstrate scale of the book and compartment.

Giants Stun Bears 30-27      Cache   Translate Page
The New York Giants finally have a signature win to carry them through the rest of the season and maybe beyond.

While beating the NFC North-leading Bears wasn't pretty and involved blowing up a 10-point lead in the final 1:13, the Giants showed character in a wild game in the rain highlighted by trick plays — and a reminder of William "The Fridge" Perry.

The Giants (4-8) won for seventh time in 28 games over the past two seasons as Aldrick Rosas kicked a 44-yard field goal in overtime in a 30-27 win Sunday, snapping the Bears' five-game winning streak.

"The takeaway is, and I told the team this, some people are fond of talented people, some people are fond of smart people. I'm fond of tough, resilient people," Giants coach Pat Shurmur said. "When you are trying to flip culture and when you are trying to build something, you have to dig in on that. There was some toughness and resiliency when they came back to tie things up."

Rosas' third field goal of the game came on the opening series of overtime. It was set up by a 29-yard run by rookie Saquon Barkley, who finished with 125 yards on 24 carries.

"It speaks to the resiliency of the guys," Giants left tackle Nate Solder said after the team refused to fold following the Bears' late heroics. "It speaks about the type of guys we have in the locker room and we just got to keep doing it and moving forward and believing in each other and doing it together."

The Giants didn't nail down the win until Janoris Jenkins knocked away a deep fourth-down pass to Taylor Gabriel after quarterback Chase Daniel fumbled on consecutive plays on the rainy afternoon to set up a fourth-and-8.

Chicago (8-4) forced overtime by getting a 21-yard field goal by Cody Parkey and a 1-yard touchdown pass from halfback Tarik Cohen to Anthony Miller as time expired in the fourth quarter. The trick-play touchdown was set up by a recovered onside kick by Daniel Brown on a play Giants star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. did not dive for the loose ball. Then came a questionable pass interference call in the end zone against cornerback B.W. Webb with :03 to go.

"I'm proud of them for fighting to the end. Not every team will do that," Bears coach Matt Nagy said. "We've got a bunch of high-character guys that will fight till the end and that's a credit to them. We've got to figure out how to learn from this. This is part of that callus that goes on."

Besides the Cohen pass on what appeared to be a sweep, the Giants saw Beckham throw and catch touchdowns, and Chicago nose tackle Akiem Hicks dive over on fourth down from 1 yard on a play made famous by Perry in the Bears glory days in the mid-1980s.

The Giants seemed to have it wrapped up when Rosas kicked a 37-yard field goal for a 27-17 lead with 1:49 to play. But the Bears rallied behind Daniel (26 of 39 for 285 yards, a TD and two interceptions) and several mistakes by the Giants, who were called for 12 penalties for 107 yards.

New York had two penalties on the tying drive, which featured a 23-yard, fourth-down pass from Daniel to Cohen to the Giants 9 with 11 seconds left in regulation.

Cohen finished with 12 catches for 156 yards.

Linebacker Alex Ogletree intercepted two passes, scoring on an 8-yard return on the second play from scrimmage. The Giants forced three turnovers and had a season-high five sacks against Daniel, who was starting his second game for the injured Mitchell Trubisky (shoulder).

The Giants made many big plays in the second half. Beckham threw a 49-yard TD pass to Russell Shepard and caught a 1-yard, fourth-down TD from Eli Manning (19 of 35 for 170 yards and an interception) as New York opened a 24-14 lead in the third quarter.

Beckham said primary target Bennie Fowler was double covered and he was about to run until he saw Shepard.

"I saw him down the middle of the field and I was like, this can't be real, and I just launched it to him," said Beckham, who has thrown two touchdowns this season.

A 36-yard field goal by Parkey got the Bears within 24-17 in the third quarter.

"That's definitely not our best," Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan said. "We had moments of it, we just didn't play four quarters, which is what we need to do when we have tough games like this."

Rosas, who kicked a 57-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to make it 14-10, and added a 37-yard field goal after Sean Chandler recovered Gabriel's fumble deep in Bears territory.

The Bears came right back and forced the overtime.

Daniel had a 2-yard touchdown pass by Daniel to Adam Shaheen in the first quarter. Hicks scored in the second.

New York now has won 3 of 4 since its bye week.

INJURIES

The Giants started the game without LB B.J. Goodson out with a neck problem. His backup, Tae Davis, left the game in the first half with an ankle injury. Ukeme Eligwe played and had his first three tackles of the season. WR Shepard had a rib injury in the first half and returned. S Landon Collins was on and off the field with a shoulder problem. He had five tackles.

RECORD

Rosas' 57-yard field goal was the longest in Giants history. The record was 56 by Ali Haji-Sheikh, who converted from that distance twice in 1983.

NOTES

Ogletree, who had a team-high 10 tackles, has four interceptions this season and has scored touchdowns on returns in two straight home games. He tallied on a 15-yarder against Tampa Bay on Nov. 18. ... The Bears fumbled six times and lost one. Daniel had four fumbles and didn't lose any.

Butler, Simmons Spark 76ers Past Grizzlies 103-95      Cache   Translate Page
Jimmy Butler continued his run as Philadelphia's stretch-run shooter, scoring 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead the 76ers to a 103-95 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night.

Butler hit winning shots against Charlotte and Brooklyn in eight days to quickly earn a reputation as Philly's newest sharp shooter. Against a Memphis team trying to steal one on the road, Butler hit big buckets in the waning moments.

Butler didn't need the final-minute theatrics to win this one. But he proved his worth in the fourth.

Ben Simmons, who had 19 points and 12 rebounds, ran up from behind on MarShon Brooks and poked the ball free for a steal. That led to a pair of free throws for Butler that made it 95-89. Butler buried a turnaround jumper for a 97-89 lead that sealed the win.

Butler and Simmons have started wearing white headbands — yes, they are a headband of brothers — as a symbol of their commitment to defense. Butler has tried to take Simmons under his wing and focus more on a defensive toughness. But they've been pretty good on offense since Butler's arrival last month from Minnesota. Butler fed Simmons for a cutting layup in the first quarter and Simmons fed Butler on an alley-oop for an early spark.

With the rest of the NBA on a run-and-shoot style of soaring scores, the Grizzlies are grinding out wins in a methodical manner. They kept within striking distance of the Sixers and pulled to 84-81 in the fourth and Marc Gasol hit a 3 to make it 92-84.

The Sixers had thumped New York by 16 and Washington by 25 as they rolled to the second-most wins in the NBA. They are 13-1 at home and 8-2 since the acquired Butler in a trade with Minnesota last month.

JJ Redick continued his late-career resurgence with 24 points for the Sixers and Joel Embiid had 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Mike Conley scored 21 points and Jaren Jackson Jr. had 17 for the Grizzlies.

TIP-INS

Grizzlies: Had no offensive rebounds out of 17 total in the first half. ... The Grizzlies, coming off a 131-125 double-overtime win at Brooklyn on Friday, used their defense to hold the Sixers to just 26 points in the first quarter. The Sixers averaged a league-best 30.3 points in the first quarter this season.

76ers: Played without starting F Wilson Chandler (thigh). Chandler was not expected to miss another game. Mike Muscala got the start and scored eight points. ... Director M. Night Shyamalan was at the game. ... Embiid has scored in double figures in all 25 games.

UP NEXT

Grizzlies: Host the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night.

76ers: At Toronto on Wednesday night.

On Thursday, November 29, in a square in downtown Gilbert, #LightTheWorld giving machines became available to the public, offering users the chance to make charitable donations for items such as diapers, turkeys, or toys. A ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by Sister Reyna I. The machines will be available throughout the Christmas season.“To be a part of it this year is just great,” he said. “I love the idea that there are items here from a pair of socks for a homeless person to airfare to reunite a refugee child with their family and everything in between. It is very meaningful.”Sunny Arizona got a little brighter this holiday season.“There’s something for everyone,” she said. “It’s a simple way to give as Christ would give.” The giving machines, which opened in Gilbert, Arizona, on Thursday, November 29, offer items ranging from $3 and up. The administrative expenses will be covered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

Reviews: Irish Times crime fiction column, December 2018      Cache   Translate Page
My crime fiction column for the Irish Times this month is an all-Irish affair, and features Kevin McCarthy, Tanya Farrelly, Fiona Gartland, Nessa O’Mahony and Ken Bruen. To wit:

Kevin McCarthy’s first two novels, Irregulars and Peeler, were set against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War, but Wolves of Eden (W.W. Norton) opens in the wake of the American Civil War, with the psychologically scarred Union Army veteran Lieutenant Molloy dispatched to Fort Phil Kearny in the Dakota Territory to ‘put boots on the gallows’ – i.e., investigate the apparent murder of the fort’s sutler and his wife. Molloy being an alcoholic determined to drink himself to death, the investigation is largely conducted by his second-in-command, Sergeant Kohn; woven through Kohn’s attempts to penetrate the code of omertà that pertains at Fort Kearny is a rambling, semi-literate confession written by Michael O’Driscoll, an Irish immigrant who has served with the Union Army during the recent War. A compelling tale of men who were ‘chucked into the roaring flames of history,’ Wolves of Eden is superbly detailed in its depiction of frontier soldiering, with Fort Kearny besieged by Chief Red Cloud and the story playing out against the events which led to the Fetterman Massacre of 1866. Flashing with shards of coal-black humour – Michael’s brother Tom, shot in the face at the battle of Chickamauga, has ‘a face that would make a funeral turn from a main road’ – Wolves of Eden is a brutal, blood-soaked and unsentimental account of the Old West that bears comparison with Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian.
Tanya Farrelly’s When Your Eyes Close (Killer Reads) is an audacious exercise in genre-blending. Nick Drake is an alcoholic who undergoes hypnotherapy in a desperate bid to curtail his boozing, only to witness himself committing multiple murders in what appears to be a previous life. Shaken to his core, and reluctantly believing himself to be the knife-wielding killer John Davis, Nick sets out to investigate what really happened – only to discover that Caitlin, the daughter he orphaned during his killing spree, is struggling to cope with the mysterious disappearance of her husband, David. Where Farrelly’s crime debut The Girl Behind the Lens came coated in gritty realism, When Your Eyes Close revels in its fantastical premise (even if much of Caitlin’s backstory is rooted in the ongoing homelessness crisis). The plot isn’t entirely seamless as Farrelly juggles her parallel time-lines, but the overall effect is an entertainingly off-beat account of a man determined to bring himself to justice.
Big Pharma finds itself in the dock In the Court’s Hands (Poolbeg), the debut thriller from Irish Times journalist Fiona Gartland, which opens with Beatrice Barrington, a stenographer at the Dublin Criminal Court, observing a suspicious liaison in the Phoenix Park between Stephen O’Farrell, the accused in a high profile case, and the forewoman of the jury, Rachel Deere. When Rachel is subsequently found dead in her apartment, Beatrice suspects foul play, and enlists the help of ex-Garda detective Gabriel Ingram to help her investigate. There’s more than a hint of the Miss Marple about the prim, fussy and resolutely moral Beatrice Harrington, and In the Court’s Hands offers a neat blend of the courtroom drama and the amateur sleuth sub-genres, and even tosses in what appears to be an homage to Raymond Chandler as Beatrice, nosing around where she shouldn’t, finds herself drugged and incarcerated in a mental hospital. Regular flashbacks to the younger Beatrice’s life in 1980s Dublin leach tension from the main plot, but they are vividly rendered and contribute handsomely to a promising debut.
Poet Nessa O’Mahony publishes her debut crime novel with The Branchman (Arlen House) which opens in 1925 with Michael Mackey, a detective officer in the newly formed Garda Special Branch, sent to the Garda barracks in Ballinasloe “to root out subversion”. Mackey, a veteran of numerous conflicts, isn’t fooled by the beauty of rural Galway: “It all looked innocent enough, but who knew what old animosities were lurking in those green fields?” There’s enough animosity to deliver a murder, certainly, and Mackey quickly discovers himself investigating the theft of a cache of stolen arms. O’Mahony is particularly strong on the everyday detail of a stranger negotiating a hazardous landscape – the character of Mackey is loosely based on her own grandfather, Michael McCann – and delivers a series of brief, intense chapters which generate a ferocious pace. Most fascinating, perhaps, is O’Mahony’s evocation of the wider political backdrop, that fragile, imperfect peace that took hold in the wake of the War of Independence and the Civil War.
Jack Taylor returns in Ken Bruen’s In the Galway Silence (Head of Zeus), the 14th novel to feature the Galway-based private eye. Commissioned to investigate the bizarre murder of the anti-social Renaud twins, Jack quickly concludes that ‘It wasn’t a mystery as to them being killed but a mystery as to why it hadn’t happened sooner.’ The investigation, however, serves as springboard into a much wider exploration of the country’s ills, as Jack, self-described as ‘a broken PI’, wanders the mean streets of Galway lamenting the state of ‘the new broken Ireland.’ Post-modern to a fault, In the Galway Silence is littered with references to Jack Taylor’s preferred reading, which here includes the cult crime fiction authors Craig McDonald, Eddie Bunker and Daniel Woodrell, and further features the Galway-based author Scott Harden, whose ‘alleged stint in a South American jail had given him preternaturally totally white hair,’ and whose appearance causes Jack to believe that, ‘I could be looking at me fein (myself).’ Located on the literary spectrum somewhere between Charles Bukowski’s Pulp and the wilder extravagances of James Crumley’s private eye C.W. Sughrue, In the Galway Silence exudes a nihilistic thrill in smashing the crime fiction conventions to smithereens. ~ Declan Burke
