Tips on Getting Cheap Tickets to Turks and Caicos

For some people, the actual planning process is one of the most enjoyable parts of taking a vacation. It's always a challenge to hunt down the best flight deals, so here are a few tips:

1. Search for tickets one seat at a time

If you are searching for tickets for your family, if you really want to save money, try searching by one ticket at a time. This is because most automated systems will show you the highest fare for all the tickets. If you try searching one seat at a time, there may be limited seats on sale.

2. Search at midweek

Airlines tend to launch their sales on Tuesdays and end them on Thursdays, so don’t limit your searches to the weekends.

3. Fly on a holiday

It may seem counterintuitive, but the biggest savings can be found by flying on the actual holiday, such as Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. The exception is if you’re traveling over a three-day weekend—then, everyone is looking to fly on the actual holiday, so that’s the perfect time to try and extend your vacation by a day.

4. Fly on a Tuesday, Wednesday or a Saturday

Why? Because planes are least full on these days of the week, these flights usually have the lowest fares.

5. Monitor Twitter, Facebook and airline emails

Follow your favorite airlines on social media in addition to signing up for discount online travel company emails.

Ten Reasons Why Providenciales Was Prince’s Secret Hideaway      Cache   Translate Page

Recently the world discovered that Providenciales is home to a stunning Caribbean hideaway belonging to the late singer Prince. The mansion in Turks and Caicos is an oceanfront property, features 10 bedrooms and a purple driveway, and went on on sale for $12 million following the singer's death in 2016.

And now, two years later, Prince's Turks and Caicos estate is up for auction. Why did Prince and other celebrities choose Providenciales for their secret hideout? Let's take a look.

Prince's mansion has captured the world's imagination

Reason #1: Beautiful Beaches

The Sands - Grace Bay Beach

There is over 230 miles of beach, most of it softest white sands on Earth. Need we say more?

Grace Bay beach is frequently ranked the world's best beach, thanks to its soft sand, clear waters and incredible turquoise hues. Prince's mansion enjoys its own private stretch of shoreline, looking out over the azure sea.

Providenciales itself is also regularly named a top island destination in the world, mostly for its relative seclusion and pristine beauty.

Reason #2: We're off the Beaten Track

[caption id="attachment_2438" align="aligncenter" width="640"]south caicos South Caicos, by Murray Blacomb.[/caption]

We’re quite close to the mainland, yet still remain relatively undiscovered.

The Turks and Caicos Islands are located 575 miles southeast of Miami, Florida, just below the Bahamas chain and to the east of Cuba and the island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti). Although they're less than an hour by air from the mainland, Turks and Caicos are still located in a relatively quiet corner of the Caribbean -- perfect for celebrities who want to remain out of sight.

And there are many opportunities to stay off the beaten track. The Turks and Caicos Islands consist of 40 islands and cays, and each one offers a chance for a celebrity to enjoy a private Caribbean vacation.

Reason 3: We're Sublimely Beautiful

[caption id="attachment_2071" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Chalk Sound Chalk Sound. By Flickr user Tim Sackton. (CC BY-SA 2.0)[/caption]

From beautiful beaches to truly turquoise seascapes, Turks and Caicos is unbelievably beautiful. Why wouldn't Prince want to spend his vacation time here?

The natural beauty is not limited to Providenciales. From the majestic caves of North Caicos to isolated Dragon Cay on Middle Caicos, we're located in an exceptionally beautiful part of the world.

Reason 4: We're Close to the Mainland

[caption id="attachment_2074" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Provo Airport (PLS) By Flickr user Stefan Krasowski . (CC BY-SA 2.0)[/caption]

Providenciales International Airport (PLS) is also centrally-located, and it takes typically less than 15 minutes to travel to any resort on the island, or any private residence.

Celebrities, like anyone else, want to spend less time in traffic and more time enjoying their vacation and the beach.

Reason 5:

sands grace bay guest comments

While Grace Bay Beach may be the jewel in the Turks and Caicos crown, many other spectacular beaches await you here on the island of Providenciales.

The Turks and Caicos Islands themselves are the tips of banks (basically coral atolls) that rise nearly 3000 meters above the ocean floor.

The bank on which our islands sit is made from the remains of ancient corals and shelled creatures. The chalky limestone has gradually eroded over time to give us the beautiful powdery sand that has made Grace Bay Beach a favorite location for so many people around the world.

All this means there are many secluded white-sand beaches to be explored by celebrity and regular visitors alike. Learn more about Turks and Caicos beaches.

What Islands Are in the Caribbean?      Cache   Translate Page

what islands are in the caribbean

What islands are in the Caribbean? And which island is best for planning your perfect vacation?

There are at least 700 islands, reefs and cays in the Caribbean, and every one of them promises adventure for travelers. Some offer all the comforts of home, while others are harder to reach and provide rewards for explorers.

To help you understand where everything is to plan your vacation, let's take a look at the geography of the Caribbean.

Map of the Caribbean

Lesser Antilles and Leeward Islands

When you start researching the Caribbean, you'll encounter two terms: "Lesser Antilles" and "Leeward Islands." These are major island chains in the region, and home to some of the most famous vacation destinations in the world.

But what exactly are they?

Leeward Islands

The Leeward Islands face the open Atlantic Ocean to the east, in the outer, southeast corner of the Caribbean.

The islands get their name from the time when sailing ships were the only form of transportation across the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and its Caribbean colonies. The Leeward Islands include Anguilla, St. Martin, Guadeloupe and other islands.

The Leeward Islands' counterparts are the Windward Islands to their southeast, including St. Lucia, Barbados and Trinidad.

In terms of where each island chain gets its name, in sailing terminology, "windward" means towards the source of the wind, while "leeward" is the opposite direction.

In the Caribbean, the prevailing winds, known as the trade winds, blow out of the southeast. Therefore, an island to the northwest, such as Puerto Rico, would typically be leeward of an island to the southeast, such as Antigua. As well, Antigua would typically be windward of Puerto Rico, but leeward of Guadeloupe and Martinique.

Lesser Antilles

While most people can easily name individual islands and nations that make up the Greater Antilles -- Jamaica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba -- the Lesser Antilles can be harder to identify.

The Lesser Antilles, a chain of volcanic islands stretching along the southeastern edge of the Caribbean, also includes the Leeward and Windward Islands. So, the Lesser Antilles includes popular vacation destinations such as the Barbados, Antigua and the US Virgin Islands.

What About Turks and Caicos?

The islands of the Turks and Caicos aren't technically located in the Caribbean at all. Instead, we're in the Atlantic Ocean, and are part of the Bahama Archipelago, to the north of Cuba and to the east of Florida.

The Turks and Caicos shares many characteristics with the Bahamas, the country and island chain to the northwest of us. We share blue seas, white sand beaches, and a similar culture.

Caicos Islands by Satellite

However, it's Providenciales here in Turks and Caicos that is regularly recognized as one of the top travel destinations in the world. And it's Grace Bay that is also regularly voted the world's best beach.

All together, the islands of the the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles and the Bahamas, including Turks and Caicos, make up the West Indies.

Popular Caribbean Island Destinations

The Caribbean and the West Indies are filled with tropical vacation destinations to suit every wallet and every taste. Generally speaking, your travel budget and accessibility -- how long it will take you to reach your destination -- are two of the biggest considerations when planning a Caribbean trip.

With those considerations in mind, here are several Caribbean destinations popular with people all over the world.

St. Martin

One of the Leeward Islands in the southeastern Caribbean, St. Martin is one island shared by two countries, France and the Netherlands. St. Martin is famous for its airport adjacent the beach, where jumbo jets fly low right over holidaymakers.

St. Martin is a beloved airport destination because of its direct flights from Europe and the United States, and its mix of French, Dutch and Caribbean culture. Unfortunately, the 2017 hurricane season left both the island and the airport significantly damaged.

Haiti

While many travelers visit its neighbor, the Dominican Republic, Haiti is a mostly overlooked Caribbean destination. Although Haiti is quite poor, it has developed into a cruise ship destination with all-inclusive resorts. The history and culture of the country offers many opportunities for more adventurous tourists.

haiti tourism

While Haiti is quite beautiful, because of its location it also tends to experience more than its fair share of hurricanes from September to November. Travel between the airport and resorts can be challenging, so visitors should exercise caution.

St. Lucia

This isolated island hidden away in a remote corner of the Caribbean is a romantic paradise for lovers. Forested mountains tower above pristine beaches, and ultra-exclusive resorts hide among the trees.

st lucia pitons

St. Lucia is one of the more spectacular destinations in the Caribbean, but, even with direct flights from the United States it can be hard to reach -- plan on booking an entire day just on travel. The tree-top resorts are also generally aimed at luxury travelers with big budgets.

Turks and Caicos.. The Perfect Caribbean Destination?

Turks and Caicos, still largely undiscovered by mass tourism, is not only off the beaten track, but is also easy to reach from the mainland. It's about an hour by air from Fort Lauderdale to Providenciales (PLS), with direct flights to Turks and Caicos from other major airports including Atlanta, Boston and New York.

And, what's more, the beautiful award-winning beaches here on Providenciales have to be seen to be believed.

The average temperature ranges between 85 and 90 degrees (29-32 degrees Celsius) from June to October, and in an average year the Turks and Caicos has 350 days of sunshine.

The Sands at Grace Bay is located directly on beautiful Grace Bay, right on the beach. With our pool and spacious suites, we're a family favorite. We're just a short 15 minute drive from the airport, so you'll spend more of your time enjoying your vacation.

Washington’s top dogs: Gonzaga aiming to keep upperhand in rivalry was Huskies      Cache   Translate Page

The renewal of the Gonzaga-Washington men’s basketball rivalry hasn’t exactly renewed the rivalry.

Gonzaga has posted lopsided wins in the last three matchups, the latter two as part of a four-game set that expires after next year’s clash in Seattle. The other meeting came in the 2015 Battle 4 Atlantis when the Zags thumped the Huskies 80-64 in the Bahamas.

Prior to the 2015 meeting, Gonzaga won eight of nine games dating back to 1998, seven of those by double figures. So added up, the Zags have won 11 of the last 12 with only one of those victories by single digits.

The Huskies’ challenge doesn’t get any easier Wednesday against top-ranked Gonzaga (8-0) in the McCarthey Athletic Center. Washington has dropped its last seven to GU in Spokane, dating back to 1944.

However, the Huskies (6-2) do bring a number of positives into the matchup, including four experienced seniors with a combined 420 career games and talented sophomore wing Jaylen Nowell, the team’s leading scorer at 18 points per game.

Washington’s defense, which yielded 97 points to Gonzaga last season in Seattle, has given up 68 or less in every game except an 88-66 road loss to then No. 11 Auburn.

Coach Mike Hopkins has the program moving in the right direction. He was named Pac-12 coach of the year after guiding UW to a 21-13 mark and the NIT in his first season. The former long-time Syracuse assistant coach has implemented the Orange’s extended 2-3 zone and opponents are shooting just 39.8 percent and scoring 66.4 points.

“That’s a heck of an experienced squad,” said Gonzaga coach Mark Few, who has a 35-18 record against Pac-12 foes. “Mike has just done such a great job of giving them a purpose and identity.”

Hopkins has beefed up the non-conference schedule. In addition to Auburn and GU, Washington beat Texas A&M 71-67, lost to Minnesota 68-66 and has an upcoming date with No. 15 Virginia Tech.

The Huskies, who were No. 25 in the preseason AP poll, have been inconsistent. They blasted one-win Eastern Washington but were pushed the final buzzer by San Diego and UC Santa Barbara, a pair of 6-2 teams.

The Zags had few issues against Washington’s zone last year. Gonzaga shot 51 percent and had 26 second-chance points. The Zags also got loose in transition before UW could set up its defense.

Washington, which leads the series 29-17, boasts improved rim protection, swatting 7.0 shots per game to rank fourth nationally. The Huskies were 19th nationally last season.

Gonzaga is 10th in blocks at 6.0 per game. Junior forward Brandon Clarke is third nationally with 31 of GU’s 48 blocks.

Nowell has bumped his shooting accuracy to 57 percent after shooting 45 percent as a freshman. He’s made 48 percent on 3-pointers, up from 35 a year ago.

Matisse Thybulle is all over UW’s record book. The reigning Pac-12 defensive player of the year is No. 1 in steals (227), fifth in blocks (124) and he’s 31 points from joining teammates Noah Dickerson and point guard David Crisp in UW’s 1,000-point club.

Dickerson, an All-Pac-12 selection last year, averages 17.3 points, Crisp 9.1 and Thybulle 6.8, his lowest since his freshman season.

FIBAWC - RD NO SE CONFÍA DE CARA A JUEGO CONTRA CHILE      Cache   Translate Page

Thanks Al. Not really interested in catching triggers, or for that matter bonefish. I will do a day in Honolulu for that and of course in the Bahamas. Regarding permit, I have a pretty good idea of the flies I will fish in the Bahamas. A few years back I picked up 3 fishing rays in the Jolters with an Avalon. Obviously, that worked with cruising fish. I’ll have one rod with an Avalon and the other with the bottom/species specific crab. Thanks for you offer of advice. Still would like to figure out the legs on your crab. I’ve been seeing a lot more commercially tied one with those type of legs, but yours seemed to be better. Steve

• 1847 - Hall of Famer C/3B James “Deacon” (he was a clean-living, religious fellow) White was born in Caton, NY. He played as a 41-year-old for the Alleghenys in 1889, and lasted one more season before ending his 20-year career with the Buffalo Bisons, retiring with a .312 BA. As a member of Forest City of Cleveland, White led off the opening game against the Fort Wayne Kekiongas with a double off Bobby Mathews, considered the first major league hit (the National Association of Professional Baseball Players was the first pro league), and banged into the first double play. Deacon also helped popularize the catcher’s mask and he was the first pitcher to go into a wind-up (he pitched twice, piling up 10 innings of relief work). Sadly, Deacon died on July 7th, 1939, at the age of 91, just after being snubbed for inclusion in the Hall of Fame. It took until 2013 for White to earn a spot in the Hall.

  • 1876 - RHP Roscoe Miller was born in Greenville, Indiana. Roscoe started out on fire, winning 23 games for Detroit as a rookie. He stumbled along for the next couple of years but seemed to have righted the ship with the Pirates in 1904, going 7-7/3.35. But bad luck intervened. Miller was riding with 14 other Pirates in a carriage when the rear wheel collapsed. Several players were hurt when the carriage folded and was dragged on its side by the horses, including Miller, who injured his wrist badly in the accident. That would become his last MLB season, although he spent five years in the minors afterward. Roscoe had a boatload of nicknames, with Rubberlegs, Roxy and Ross among them. "Ross" and "Roxy" are plays on Roscoe, and he was dubbed "Rubberlegs" after moving from Detroit to New York to Pittsburgh in a 14-month span.
  • 1896 - C Mike Wilson was born in Edge Hill, Pennsylvania (Montgomery County). Mike’s entire MLB career consisted of five appearances behind the dish and an 0-for-4 career hitting line in 1921 for Pittsburgh. He is notable, though, as one of the early two-sport players who suited up for the Pirates, as he spent four winters playing football with early pro clubs in Buffalo, Rochester and Rock Island.
  • 1898 - Pittsburgh traded IF Bill Gray and RHP Bill Hart to Milwaukee of the Western League for OF Ginger Beaumont. Gray wouldn’t play in the majors again while Hart tossed one more big league campaign. Beaumont spent eight of his 12 MLB seasons as a Pirate, hitting .321 over that span, winning the NL batting title once and leading the league in hits three times.

  • 1906 - RHP Johnny Welch was born in Washington, DC. Welch tossed for nine seasons, closing out his career in 1936 with the Pirates after being picked up in June from the PCL’s San Diego Padres, where he had been sent by Boston in May. He got a save for Pittsburgh in nine outings with a 4.50 ERA, spent the next season in the minors at St. Paul and hung ‘em up after the 1937 campaign at age 30 - his minor league contract had been sold to San Francisco and Johnny didn’t want to play so far from home. No compromise was reached and Welch walked. He didn’t have much time left - he passed away in 1940 after a nine-month battle with TB.
  • 1934 - UT Andre Rodgers was born in Nassau, Bahamas. He was with the Bucs from 1965-67, batting .257 over that time, playing all four infield spots while seeing action in left field, too. Rodgers was the first Bahamian to play in the major leagues. A talented cricket player who paid his own way for a tryout with the Giants in 1954, he finally cracked the majors in 1957 and played 11 big league seasons, finishing with a .249 BA.
  • 1936 - The Pirates signed 23-year-old IF Lee “Jeep” Handley as a free agent after a strong rookie audition with the Reds. He was a dependable sometimes starter, sometimes bench player for the Bucs over eight seasons (1937-46, with time off for WW2), averaging 105 games per year and hitting .269. It’s been speculated (by the Uniontown Morning Herald of 1938) that he got his nickname in 1936 as a Cincinnati rookie when he apparently reminded the veterans of a new Popeye cartoon strip character, “Jeep.” As Popeye said when gifted with Jeep: "Well, blow me down! A baby puppy!"

  • 1963 - Win some, lose some… The Pirates lost OF Bobby Tolan, who just turned 18 with a season at Class A Reno under his belt, to the Cards in the now defunct first-year player draft. Tolan ended up with a solid 13-year career with a .265 lifetime BA and even made a late stop back to his original Bucco club in 1977. Pittsburgh claimed LHP Luke Walker from Boston in the same draft, and Luke spent 8-of-9 MLB seasons with the Pirates, going 40-42-9/3.42 in 243 games (100 starts) as a sort of an all-around pitching handyman.
  • 1967 - GM Joe Brown worked out a pair of deals, trading minor league 1B/OF Bob Oliver to the Minnesota Twins for 35-year-old reliever Ronnie Kline and selling C Jim Pagliaroni, who had offseason neck surgery, to the KC Athletics the next day. Kline won 12 games and saved seven in a strong ‘68 campaign, then faded the next season and was sent to SF for Joe Gibbons. Oliver seasoned for awhile, then starting in 1969, ran off seven MLB seasons, five as a starter with KC and California, batting .256 lifetime with an OPS+ of 100 on the nose. Pags had two seasons and 120 games left in him, hitting .244 during his last hurrah in the AL.

George Clooney and Rande Gerber have a third partner in their $1 billion tequila company, and he happens to be a real estate tycoon      Cache   Translate Page

Mike Meldman sitting on a paddleboard

  • Mike Meldman is the third partner in George Clooney's billion-dollar Casamigos tequila.
  • He also happens to be a real estate tycoon as owner of Discovery Land Company.
  • Discovery owns 23 properties that cater to "CEOs, presidents, and athletes."
  • To become a member of one of the resorts, people have to buy land on the property and build a home.
  • They boast golf courses, restaurants, bars, and other sports.

George Clooney and multimillionaire Rande Gerber shook up the drinks industry in June 2017 when they sold their tequila company, Casamigos, to Diageo for a whopping $1 billion.

However, the pair actually have a third business partner — real estate tycoon Mike Meldman, who everyone we've asked seems to call "one of the most well-connected people I know."

Meldman's road to success has been an impressive one.

Born in Milwaukee, he told Business Insider that he went to Stanford as a history major with dreams of being a lawyer but "bombed the LSATs" and didn't apply.

"I ended up dealing blackjack in Harrah's Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino," he told BI — though that didn't last long.

"I met a guy who asked me if I wanted to make as much money as I wanted to and work as little as I wanted to, and he hired me [to] his startup commercial real estate company," he said.

He started as a broker selling land and leasing properties in Freemont, California, across the bridge from Palo Alto, where Stanford is.

"I had no training, but I went out and learned how to make deals," he said, adding that within a year and a half he went from a broker working weekends to make money to "selling all of Freemont."

He started taking the money he earned and buying properties to develop himself, which he said had its "ups and downs" in the 80s.

"I bought a ranch outside of Palo Alto with 300 acres and [space] for 35 houses which had every environmental constraint known to man," he said. "It took me 18 years to get 28 lots on the property, [but it] taught me how to develop property through the environment and not kill the vegetation."

And the experience has certainly paid off now.

"I say I got a PhD in property development," he said. "I was able to take that education and experience and move that to other places around the country."

'Everything taken care of in a casual way'

Aerial shot down fairway toward green, silos and Comfort Station_Discovery Land Company

Meldman officially founded Discovery Land Company in 1994.

His first big project was in Pinnacle Peak, Scottsdale, Arizona, where he set out to develop a "massive resort" and ended up with 250 homes.

His next project was also centred around golf, but by the time he set up his third resort in Whitefish Montana, he had two kids, aged six and eight at the time, who were living a city life in San Francisco.

"I figured the golf would sell to the men, but I wanted to do something that the wife and kids would enjoy," he said.

So he started the "Outdoor Pursuits" programme, which allows members to hire local people to teach them things like paddle boarding or take them swimming with sharks. "I wanted to teach [my kids] things I never learned, [like] flyfishing, wakeboarding," he said.

His kids also acted as "guinea pigs" for his next project in Hawaii, where he incorporated surfing and swimming.

"[We] turned it into a way of life, not only for me and my kids but for other families," he said.

Step-by-step, Discovery "exploded" and became 23 real estate projects.

Now, CEOs, presidents, and athletes are among those who own property, according to Meldman, who once called the resorts "frat houses for families."

To become a member of the Discovery resorts, people have to buy land on the property and build a home, which Meldman says "creates a trust and community where you know your neighbour."

The community is private and low-key, providing somewhere that successful people can go and "have everything taken care of in a casual way," from playing sports in the morning to eating and drinking in the afternoon and evening.

The resorts are designed to "take the stress out of vacation planning."

Even the "comfort stations" are "styled like the inside of an editor's closet," according to Meldman.

Here's the outside of one at Silo Ridge Field Club, a private, gated, 800-acre resort 90 minutes from Manhattan which was the first to open on the east coast.

Inside the comfort stations, Meldman says you'll find everything from frozen margaritas to ice cream sundaes and hot dogs.

There are also outdoor bars like this, as well as pools and a hot tub.

Good food is a focus throughout at properties like Silo Ridge, which has a vegetable garden and an executive chef serving up five-star farm-to-table or dock-to-table cuisine "styled beautifully but still casual" — as well as kids' menus.

Still, Meldman claims the resorts — and the golf clubs — are super casual.

"People now go to the Bahamas and even professional golfers play in bathing suits and no shirt," he said.

"A golf club can be very intimidating, but because I wasn't a golfer from a country snob background, I made it a little more casual."

Despite the fact the company claims to have some of the best golf courses in the world, there are "no rules — you don't have to wear a collared shirt, you can golf barefoot, it's fun.

"You're not sitting at a pool like you are at a Four Seasons with people snapping videos with their phones, you're comfortable being yourself."

'George was always entertaining'

It was thanks to this friendly, chilled atmosphere that Meldman met Clooney and Gerber — and with them embarked on the Casamigos journey, now his side project.

"George has a pretty tight-knit group of guys, and every year they go on his birthday golf trip," Meldman said. "A long time ago, they started going to my projects, and I ended up hanging out with them and we all became friends."

"They built their houses in my project in El Dorado... Their houses were two beautiful homes next to eachother that they called Casamigos. George was always entertaining and had his friends around, and we a generous and gracious host, and we were drinking a lot of tequila, and decided to make our own."

casamigos

"We didn't ever really make it to sell it, [we just thought] my projects and Rande's bars and [it being] what George drank would be enough to make it successful."

However, without even realising, the trio were bringing in about 1,000 bottles, and were told by their distiller that they needed to get licensed.

Once they did, the brand "immediately took off" due to word of mouth and started winning awards.

"There weren't roles that were drawn up, but Rande had a creative role and ran things," Meldman said. George, we just put a shirt on. [He thought] "if paparazzi is going to chase me I might as well sell my tequila."

Meanwhile, Meldman was the one with the connections. "For almost every major [restaurant or grocery] chain in the country, either the money behind it or the CEO was a member of one of my projects," he said.

"I don't use the membership for anything because it's a private club, but I was able to at least make a call and ask for favours. Everyone was really nice to us about it, we were able to get into a lot of places faster than we would if we didn't [have those connections.]"

See more: The $1 billion sale of George Clooney's tequila company just made him 2018's highest-paid actor — here's the story of how the brand was set up by accident

'We have money to do things we couldn't do before'

Now, he added: "We are wholly owned subsidiary of Diageo so nothing has really changed that much other than that we have a lot more money. They're trying to open up the rest of the world for us but we're still running the US.

"We have money to do things we couldn't do before... Since we sold to Diageo we doubled our sales."

Gerber also confirmed to Business Insider that the involvement of the trio has remained the same.

"Absolutely nothing has changed... It's business as usual," he said. "George, Mike, and I are passionate about Casamigos and everything we do."

Meldman added: "Casamigos is probably the fastest-growing spirit of all time, and we did it all in four years. It's successful because it's a good product. There are going to be a lot of people who are going to imitate it and try to do it, but it was a lot of work from all three of us — we underestimated the amount of work. If we knew how much effort and work it took I don't know if we actually would have done it.

"For me, it became part of my everyday life but it was a lot of work to get the brand out there, to get distribution."

There's some fun that comes along with being involved with Casamigos, though.

Meldman got to attend the royal wedding of Princess Eugenie to Jack Brooksbank, Casamigos' European Brand Manager, back in October.

The company also continues to throw its annual star-studded Halloween parties each year.

'Successful people rewarding themselves for their success'

Mike Meldman holding a coconutHowever, Discovery, which claims to have consistently sold $1 billion in real estate a year, remains the main focus for Meldman, who now lives in Arizona, where the company's corporate HQ is based.

Discovery launched onto the east cost for the first time last year with its Silo Ridge property and also opened Dune Deck Beach Club in Westhampton, New York.

"We have a lot going on," Meldman said, adding that the company is launching a project called "Driftwood" in Austin, "Troubador" in Nashville, and "Barbuda Ocean Club" in Barbuda, which will start as a hurricane relief effort re-building schools, hospitals, and infrastructure.

Philanthropy has become a big part of the business, and Meldman founded the Discovery Land Foundation in 2007 to support the places and people (particularly children) around the resorts.

The charity claims to put "hundreds of millions a year into the community," contributing funds from Discovery and hosting events and tournaments and the resorts.

Now with three sons, aged five, 28, and 30, allowing successful people an opportunity to connect with their families is a clear focus for Meldman.

"The demographic is really just successful people rewarding themselves for their success, and also investing in their family," he said.

"One of the only regrets a lot of successful people have is not spending enough time with their families, and the clubs are places families want to go."

LuLaRoe supplier demands immediate seizure of $34 million worth of assets after the CEO's alleged threats to 'jump ship' with its riches      Cache   Translate Page

lularoe

  • LuLaRoe's chief clothing supplier, Providence Industries, has demanded that a court immediately seize nearly $34 million in assets from the company.
  • The demand, made in court filings on Tuesday, alleged LuLaRoe CEO Mark Stidham is a flight risk because of his access to a private jet and his alleged threats to "jump ship" with the company's riches.
  • The filings come after Providence Industries sued LuLaRoe last week for nearly $49 million, alleging the multi-level-marketing company has failed to pay its bills for seven months.
  • A sworn statement from LuLaRoe's head designer of five years, Patrick Winget, alleged Stidham has made several alleged threats to flee with the company's money.
  • LuLaRoe did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the filing.

A LuLaRoe supplier has demanded that a court immediately seize nearly $34 million in assets from the multi-level-marketing company, alleging its CEO is a flight risk because of his access to a private jet and his alleged threats to "jump ship" with the company's riches.

The supplier, Providence Industries, filed the demand on Tuesday in California state court, along with a number of sworn statements by key executives from both parties. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Wednesday.

"These are not empty threats," one of the filings states. "Because of the close-knit and largely family-nature of the … business, Mr. and Mrs. Stidham will be able to immediately abscond with all of the cash assets … (as he has threatened to do), particularly because they have ready access to a private jet which they may use on a moment’s notice."

The filings came after Providence Industries sued LuLaRoe last week for nearly $49 million, alleging the company has failed to pay its bills for seven months.

LuLaRoe did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the latest developments in the case. In a previous statement on the lawsuit sent to Business Insider, LuLaRoe said, "We believe the claims in this case are completely without merit and will fight vigorously against them."

The newest filings include a sworn statement from LuLaRoe's head designer of five years, Patrick Winget, in which he said LuLaRoe CEO Mark Stidham had made several alleged threats to flee with the company's money. Winget quit working for the company in September.

"While I was flying with Mark Stidham in his jet in 2018, Mark complained about the conduct and accusations by the retailers, and told me that he could just 'jump ship' from LuLaRoe and that he would take hundreds of millions of dollars from LuLaRoe and move to Wyoming or the Bahamas with DeAnne," Winget said in his statement. "This was not the only time he made such statements to me, and he would frequently tell me that he would leave the company and take its money out for his and his wife’s personal benefits. Mark Stidham told me his goal is for people to ask: 'Have you seen Mark?'"

In another sworn statement, Joseph Choi, the president and cofounder of Providence Industries, said he witnessed Stidham make an alleged threat to flee.

Choi said  in his statement that he and another Providence executive confronted Stidham on September 7, 2018, about bills past due, and Stidham allegedly said, "Look guys, I am not going to pay you guys a f***ing dime unless a judge orders me to pay it, and DeAnne and I will take our two to three hundred million dollars to the Bahamas, and f*** everything."

The filings also allege that LuLaRoe recently contacted a liquidator to sell more than $46 million worth of products. The filings include an email from this liquidator, which details the items LuLaRoe allegedly tried to sell.

"There is imminent risk that Obligors will abscond with the proceeds of this liquidation unless they are restrained from doing so," the filing states.

Claims of mounting debt, fleeing sellers, and a hunt for new suppliers

LuLaRoe Patrick Winget

Providence Industries' lawsuit alleged that LuLaRoe is insolvent, based in part on information from Winget, who was the fifth employee to be hired by LuLaRoe in 2013.

According to Winget's sworn statement, LuLaRoe's monthly revenue abruptly dropped from roughly $250 million to $100 million in mid-2017 after it changed the structure of its bonuses. These bonuses had previously been paid to sellers, also called consultants or retailers, based on how they purchased wholesale from LuLaRoe. The new structure instead based bonuses on retailers' sales to customers.

Over the next several months, a rush of retailers started exiting the company and returning their unsold goods to LuLaRoe for refunds. This is because LuLaRoe had a buyback policy promising refunds for unsold goods.

Business Insider has previously reported on sellers fleeing the company and how hundreds of people are still waiting on refunds months after sending their inventory back to the company.

Between April 2017 and September 2017, Winget said he had weekly meetings with LuLaRoe's chief supply-chain officer and chief financial officer "in which they appeared worried about mounting debts to retailers for returns and LuLaRoe's obligations to repay the retailers," Winget said in his statement.

"By August 2017, LuLaRoe was having difficulties paying the supplier for products ordered, and was concerned that it would be unable to sell all of the pre-cuts it already ordered from the supplier," the statement said.

Stidham allegedly had a plan to revive the business by recruiting more sellers, Winget said.

"Mark Stidham informed me that his plan was to recruit more retailers to try and sell more of the products and to make up for the significant reduction in retailers, sales, and revenues," Winget said in his statement.

Then in June 2018, Stidham allegedly complained that the costs of doing business with Providence Industries were too high, according to the filing. During this discussion, Stidham's son-in-law allegedly said he had found a supplier who could provide LuLaRoe with clothes at half the price of Providence Industries, according to the filing.

Winget said he voiced concerns about factory conditions and clothing quality from a supplier promising such low prices.

"Mark Stidham told me, 'I don’t give a s--- what this new guys’ factory looks like, I just want new product.'"

Winget said in his statement that by the time he left the business in September 2018, LuLaRoe's number of active sellers had dropped to 35,000, down from the more than 77,000 it had in February 2017.

LuLaRoe CEO says the lawsuit is 'just the normal course of business' and he's 'not too worried'

In a video meeting with LuLaRoe sellers on Tuesday, Stidham said he's not worried about the lawsuit.

"I do want to take one brief moment and just address the lawsuit, ok, I think most of you have heard of it or you know something about it," he said, according to a recording of the meeting obtained by Business Insider. "I’m not too worried about what’s going to happen and where things are going to go. This is just the normal course of business."

He said the company is excited about the upcoming year and encouraged LuLaRoe sellers not to be alarmed.

"It’s great to be aware," he said. "Don’t be alarmed. Focus on what your business needs from you and trust me, and trust our legal team, and trust those of us at home office that we will take care of the things we need to take care of so that you can continue to build your business. We’re committed to that. We love you."
