HP Commits to Educate 100,000 Across Africa in the Next Three Years, Opens HP LIFE Center for Entrepreneurship in South Africa      Cache   Translate Page
  • HP pledges to empower 100,000  learners across Africa in next three years through the HP Foundation’s HP LIFE (Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs) program
  • HP opens a tech-enabled HP LIFE Center in South Africa, aimed at supporting local entrepreneurs
  • Commitment supports HP’s goals to enable better learning outcomes for 100 million people by 2025, and to enroll a million HP LIFE users between 2016 and 2025

At the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, HP (NYSE: HPQ) announced a new commitment to reach 100,000 learners across Africa over the next three years through the HP Foundation’s HP LIFE program, and kicked off the commitment by opening a new tech-enabled HP LIFE Center in South Africa. HP’s pledge supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 and furthers the company’s goals to enable better learning outcomes for 100 million people by 2025 and to enroll a million HP LIFE users between 2016 and 2025, as outlined in the HP 2017 Sustainable Impact Report.

By 2030, Africa will be home to 32% of the population under the age of 30, and the largest working age population by 2035. Yet, today’s youth unemployment in Africa is up to 3x higher than adult unemployment. HP LIFE offers free, online learning for users to gain the skills to start and grow their own business or improve their employment opportunities. Building on the success of this global program, HP is working with partners to open technology-enabled HP LIFE innovation centers to further support entrepreneurship and workforce development across the continent.

“We believe that education is a human right, that technology in the classroom is a critical component for a 21st century education, and that in today’s economy our learning is never done,” said Nate Hurst, Chief Sustainability and Social Impact Officer, HP. “Africa is experiencing rapid urbanization and digitization—and it’s essential that people have access to learn skills for the work of tomorrow. This new HP LIFE Center provides a launchpad for innovation and opportunity across the continent.”

In 2017, on the global stage at the Global Citizen Festival in Hamburg, Germany, HP announced a commitment to enabling better learning outcomes for 100 million people by 2025. The commitment to education is a part of HP’s broader Sustainable Impact strategy – a strategy to use the scope, scale and expertise of HP to drive positive, lasting change for the planet, its people and the communities where we live, work and do business.

“Sustainable Impact is fundamental to our reinvention and core to achieving our vision – to create technology that makes life better for everyone, everywhere,” said Hurst.

HP LIFE

In collaboration with institutions such as the Ekurhuleni West TVET College in Katlehong and its Centre of Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator, HP opened the HP LIFE Center in South Africa on November 30, a technology-enabled hub to facilitate learning, collaboration and entrepreneurship in a physical, face-to-face setting.

Built on the belief that entrepreneurs are the backbone of the global economy, HP LIFE offers 30 free, online courses focused on business and IT skills – from business planning and marketing, to raising capital and design thinking. To date, HP LIFE has reached 744,000 learners in 200 countries and territories. All users need is a computer and Internet connection to access HP LIFE, and the new, physical center in South Africa will create a more formal educational environment. HP LIFE has an enrollment goal of 1 million users between 2016 and 2025.

At the World Economic Forum’s 48th Annual Meeting in January, Youth for Technology Foundation (YTF) and HP Foundation announced a new 3D printing course to be delivered through the HP LIFE platform. 3D printing will fundamentally change the manufacturing industry. $4 to 6 trillion (USD) of the global economy will be disrupted in the next five to 10 years, shifting economic value and jobs across the globe. This new course is helping individuals to learn how to use 3D printing and create entrepreneurial opportunities.

HP and Global Citizen in South Africa

HP has been a proud partner of the Global Citizen movement since 2013, including supporting the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, a first for South Africa. Ahead of the December 2 festival in Johannesburg, HP ran several awareness and engagement building activities to highlight the partnership and HP’s commitment to Sustainable Impact, and to engage customers, employees and the public in acting on pressing global issues.

Pushing 3D Printing Forward      Cache   Translate Page
Researchers and students have demonstrated that inks can be used instead of thermoplastic filaments to 3D print functional biomedical devices. Michael McAlpine, Benjamin Mayhugh Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, described such advances in the ESC Minneapolis keynote, “3D Printing Functional Materials & Devices.” A lot of the inks McAlpine’s group uses are nanometer-scale particle inks printed at a line-width scale of 10 microns and above for printing devices at the macro level. They have developed software as well as a high-precision robotic stage whose motion is coordinated with dispensing. Multiple inks, in a variety of viscosities, have been 3D printed on the same platform. Among the br...

85.00 USD

This is Link's wind waker from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

This wind waker is fabricated of urethane resin, with a metal rod embedded in the casting to give it a little heft, and so that it will stay straight and true. It is finished in very high quality icy white, treated with a shimmering pearl finish and clear coated to a hard high gloss. Approximately 15" long.

This item is not fabricated on a 3D printer. This is a urethane casting which was made in a mold from a meticulously hand sculpted original.

The acrylic display stand that is shown in the photos is included when you purchase the wind waker.

None of my items are 3D printed. No computer files, no ABS cord, no topo lines. My items are made of high quality cast urethane. The originals are hand fabricated – meticulously sculpted and machined using only original reference material.

As with all my items, this piece is made-to-order. I do not keep an inventory of this item but would be happy to make you a fresh one. Please let me know if you have an upcoming event for which you would need this by a specific date and I will do my best to be accommodating.
Please be aware that I will do what I can to have your item out to you by the "ship by" date, but as these are handmade items and it's just me here making all this stuff, there are occasions when an item may be shipped up to a few days past the "ship by" date. This of course does not apply if I agreed to get your item to you by a specific date. If that is the case, then you will have your item on time as promised. I anticipate and appreciate your understanding.

I had the same problem and i figured it out. The software you get when you download it from above has the wrong name of the display defined in the configuration.h file (about 2/3 the way down to the bottom). before uploading your sketch, scroll down the configuration.h file until you come across #define REPRAP_DISCOUNT_SMART_CONTROLLER. You will have to put // in front of that line and you have to remove the same 2 forward slashes from the line #define REPRAP_DISCOUNT_FULL_GRAPHIC_SMART_CONTROLLER. This was my fix because my display is the one that is closer to a square. The display that is shaped like a rectangle is the one that was defined in the file. I hope this also works for you!

This is a model that I’ve made using TinkerCAD. A snowman designed for 3D printing on a home 3D printer. It’s been created to approximate G-Scale (1:22.5) for outdoor model railways. It’s also hollow so that you can insert an LED inside and have it light-up (assuming it’s printed with a light coloured PLA) so […]

The Filament Pelletizer For Fused Granular Fabrication      Cache   Translate Page

The ABS and PLA that goes into your 3D printer is sold in two forms. The first, naturally, is filament. The second is plastic granules, the raw material for your filament, and costs an order of magnitude less than the filament itself. For years we’ve been seeing machines that either print directly with plastic granules or are converted into filament with fancy filament-extruding machines. Now we can do it the other way. [Aubrey Woern] and [Joshua Pearce] of Michigan Tech have been working on a polymer pelletizer chopper that takes plastic filament and turns it into pellets.

The system uses …read more

Finland's flagship library Oodi opens to the public in Helsinki      Cache   Translate Page

The new Helsinki Central Library Oodi - Finland's largest and arguably most lavish - opened its doors to the public on Wednesday.

Although it's technically a library, it goes far beyond merely a place to borrow books. The facility features many spaces for meeting people and socialising, and offers the opportunity for people to participate in activities like readings, workshops and special events.

Apart from books and other reading materials, Oodi is also equipped with 3D printing gear and sewing machines for creators, rehearsal rooms for musicians, a small cinema and spaces that can be reserved for a variety of uses. There's also a café as well as the possibility to try out virtual reality technology.

The 98-million-euro facility was designed by Helsinki-based ALA architects, who won the international architecture competition to design the building in 2013, and located in the heart of downtown, near the Music Centre and Kiasma Art Museum in the Töölönlahti district.

The library began its grand opening on Wednesay but the public is invited to continue celebrations at Oodi on Thursday, Independence Day with a range of activities planned.

The new community centre

The significant investment in Oodi represents the central role that public libraries play in Finland. It is also a symbol of how the country has changed from the time the first public library was founded in Vaasa in 1794.

During the 1800s, the number of public libraries increased and the idea was to offer Finns the possibility of learning to read and increase literacy. The libraries of the time were financed and maintained by different foundations and organizations.

”We have had a very strong idea that literacy will take Finland forward. Without libraries our county would not have developed into its current welfare state status,” says Rauha Maarno, Director of the Finnish Library Association.

The period following the First and Second World Wars until the 1980s was the so-called Golden Age of libraries in Finland. Libraries were built at a rapid pace and the number of users grew rapidly.

With the addition of Oodi, there are now 730 public libraries in Finland.

Finnish libraries are also well used and book-borrowing is among the world’s highest. In the Nordic countries, Finland is number one in terms of library usage.

Last year nearly one million people attended events at libraries in Finland last year.

”The use of libraries has changed, but the symbolism is still the same. If we ensure funding, libraries in the future can do even more than just educating and teaching work,” says Maarno.

Despite all of the activities on offer, 99 percent of the library’s investments are still books, Maarno says.

Now Available on Xometry: HP Multi Jet Fusion Technology       Cache   Translate Page

Editor's note: Although this is not sponsored content, the subject, Xometry, is an advertiser at Core77.

Earlier we wrote up Xometry, the online, on-demand manufacturing platform that gives industrial designers instant quotes. With an existing network of producers equipped with machines that can do Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Stereolithography (SLA), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), and PolyJet, they've got digital fabrication pretty well-covered. But in an effort to be as comprehensive as possible, they've recently added yet another process to their offerings: Multi Jet Fusion.

"HP Multi Jet Fusion is an advanced technology that offers a variety of advantages for prototyping and production relative to other 3D printing technologies including faster print speeds, higher part quality, greater material variety and voxel-level design capabilities including new color options. Xometry will offer Nylon 12, Nylon 12 glass-filled, and custom material options at launch."

Check out Multi Jet Fusion's possibilities here.

How to Make a Concrete Firepit With a 3D Printer       Cache   Translate Page

There's something charming about creating your own fire pit or fire ring with pre-cut blocks or natural stone:

But if you're interested in something more designey, Ben Uyeda shows you how to create your own shapes by injecting some digital fabrication into the process. Uyeda CADs up his desired forms and 3D prints them, then creates a mold in which he can cast inexpensive concrete.

We give him extra points for leaving an initial mold mishap in the final cut, as that's something we could totally see happening to a lot of people:

Also note that you don't need a 3D printer to do this; as Uyeda points out, you can form or carve your own shapes out of whatever material you have handy, then make a mold from those. But if you do want to go the 3D-printed route, Uyeda's made the 3D files available for free here.

Since this a part that is very prone to break in a crash and new ones (they are not expensive) take a lot of time to arrive since purchase (and in a future time they will stop selling those), I've decided to create a new one so that every one with a 3D printer can print those and be able to fly again in no time.

also, I'm tired to buy these...
