Facebook’s ad decline continues apace      Cache   Translate Page

It’s crazy what nine months can do. If you’re able to remember that far back–I know, it’s eons ago–that was right before the Cambridge Analytica scandal came to a head. At the time, Facebook was widely considered the smaller part of the digital ad duopoly–the unofficial online empire comprised of the social network and Google. Together, they controlled the lion’s share of digital consumption; they were the online ad kings.

Now, the duopoly certainly still exists, but it’s clear Facebook’s role in the ad game is showing ever-increasing signs of decay. A new report from Pivotal’s Brian Wieser states that digital content consumption on all Facebook properties–which includes Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp–was down 7% in September 2018. Things weren’t so great on the core Facebook platform, either. Though it saw more users this month, those users used the site less. This, wrote Wieser, equated to a “-20% decline in consumption per person of the core platform.” That’s . . . a lot.

While in percentages this is stark, Facebook is still the second most popular digital player. It accounted for 14.3% of all digital consumption, second to Google’s 32.5%. In third was Verizon-owned properties, which accounted for only 3.7% of total digital consumption. Even with Facebook’s decline, it is still the second biggest platform, by a big margin.

Still, the drop is noticeable. Facebook’s consumption share was 16.5% in September 2017; now it’s at 14.3%. This is, perhaps, by design. Over the last year, Facebook has announced that it’s retuning its feed to improve the quality of time spent on the platform; it’s been trying to de-emphasize clickbait or third-party content in the hopes of garnering better user engagement. Months ago, Mark Zuckerberg admitted that he expected some engagement metrics to go down as a result of the algorithm change. As Wieser notes, it’s impossible to know if this drop in consumption is due to the newsfeed tweak, or to the aftermath of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Whatever the reason is, it seems Facebook is experiencing a prolonged downward trend. A year ago, the clear winners were the duopoly. We may now be seeing the dynamics change. The question remains: If Facebook continues to fall, who will take its place?

Parents and students throughout the country have rebelled vs the Summit system b/c the students start to hate school, fall behind and become disengaged from their learning having to stare at computer screens for many hours per day. Moreover, all their personal data is being scooped up by Mark Zuckerberg via his CZI LLC. See the recent NY Mag article or the many blog posts I've written about Summit -including https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2017/08/30/parents-cite-student-privacy-concerns-with-popular-online-education-platform/?utm_term=.991a38a334ee and https://www.studentprivacymatters.org/parents-rebel-against-summitfacebookchan-zuckerberg-online-learning-platform/ and https://www.studentprivacymatters.org/update-on-summit-schools-including-my-visit-to-a-summit-charter-school/ and https://www.studentprivacymatters.org/zuckerberg-and-the-parent-pushback-vs-summit-schools-inbloom-reprised/ and https://www.studentprivacymatters.org/serious-privacy-concerns-with-new-summitfacebook-platform-used-in-100-schools-across-the-nation/

Very interesting. I first met Livingstone when he was the principal at what is now Harvest Collegiate on 14th street. I can not remember the old name of the school but he ran it into the ground and they closed it and changed the name. The parent coordinator there would enter classrooms during class time and yell at teachers. Kids basically did whatever they wanted. He is a very nice and funny person but a horrible principal. He asked me to stay and help fix the school, I declined. I later was assigned to Bread and Roses and they had a principal who put his hands on a student and Hilaire was brought in until a permanent replaced could be recruited by a non-profit involved in the school. He was horrible and spent his time in the office while the school was completely out of control. AP Ali would go around yelling, screaming and cursing at the students and apologize to the student body for his behavior. It was on the chopping block and since has be closed, renamed and the like. Dwyane Clark came in for a staff meeting one time around Christmas and listened to Hilaire stand up routine and everyone laughed their asses off and then we went on break. Came back to a completely dysfunctional learning and teaching environment. That is when I saw how complicit the UFT is/was in dealing with abusive and incompetent school leadership that directly affected their members. While on my ATR tour, I ran across Hilarie consulting principals at Unity HS in the old Norman Thomas, said hi, a little small talk and then he disappeared. I wanted to ask him his secret on staying in the DOE even after all his missteps. Still up to no good.

I don't have the details on what is behind this walkout at this point. I saw something where the students at a school for supposed journalism are complaining about the curriculum. If you have info leave a comment but be patient as I have moderation on.

Part of 15K463 SSJ walkout on 5th November 2018 - despite the Superintendent Janice Ross trying to talk the students out of it.

One of IA Principal Livingstone Hilaire’s cronies who is also a former IA Principal in our school is preaching to the students what the students typed up.

Superintendent Janice Ross is on site at the moment - she was sent by Executive Superintendent Karen Watts to stop the walk out.

5 trends that will reshape media and advertising in 2019, including Facebook's next moves      Cache   Translate Page

mark zuckerberg facebookChip Somodevilla/Getty Images

  • The advertising and media industries will continue to see seismic changes in 2019, according to a new report by market research firm Forrester.
  • AT&T will buy Roku and Google will acquire LiveRamp in 2019, Forrester predicts.
  • Additionally, blockchain will become increasingly mainstream, and hyper-targeting will give way to contextual creative, the report says.

From a bevy of M&A deals and consolidation on one end, to Facebook's Cambridge-Analytica scandal and GDPR on another, there were a lot of shake-ups in the advertising and media industries in 2018.

2019 will continue that trend, according to a new report by market research firm Forrester, which predicts not only more M&A action, but also trends like blockchain becoming more mainstream.

"We feel that there are specific events and trends that will take place in 2019 – specifically around further M&A, blockchain introducing itself into advertising, creative supporting personalization and Facebook having to rely more heavily on Instagram and WhatsApp for growth," Collin Colburn, B2C marketing analyst at Forrester, told Business Insider.

But on a macro level, the biggest battleground for media in 2019 will be control for digital advertising dollars, he said. Amazon, AT&T, Verizon, and Disney have all made moves to counter the Facebook-Google duopoly, and will vie for their position with their technology stacks, distribution, and content capabilities.

"Google and Facebook will start to feel this competition in 2019, and we will be watching to see if cracks begin forming in the foundation of the empires they have both built," Colburn said.

Here are the five events that will reshape media ad advertising in 2o19, according to Forrester:

AT&T will buy Roku to become a TV platform

By snapping up Time Warner, AppNexus, and DirectTV, AT&T pieced together the content, technology, and distribution pipes needed to challenge the duopoly as well as rival TV networks. But to truly become a viable threat, it needs to become a bigger part of consumers' daily lives.

AT&T will do that by acquiring Roku, Forrester predicts, as the acquisition will not only give it tremendous scale but also help it complement its new targeted advertising division, Xandr.

"Buying Roku is a natural next step for AT&T after their acquisitions of Time Warner and AppNexus in 2018," Colburn said.

Instagram and WhatsApp will save Facebook

From the Cambridge Analytica fiasco, to a cyber attack that impacted nearly 50 million user accounts, Facebook battled a spate of brand crises in 2018, severely impacting its brand reputation.

The platform isn't growing at the pace it once was either, with monthly active users (MAUs) being flat in the second quarter of 2018 in North America and falling in Europe, coupled with decelerated ad revenue growth.

But the company can't be dismissed yet, according to Forrester, with Instagram quickly emerging as its shining star with more than 1 billion monthly active users and a user growth rate outpacing Facebook's.

"In 2019, we predict that Instagram will continue to pick up the slack while Facebook hones in on Messenger and WhatsApp to accelerate user and ad revenue growth for the parent company," the authors of the report write. "Messaging apps for one-on-one consumer interactions and advertising are still uncertain territory for brands but are increasing in interest — and Facebook will deliver."

Blockchain will become mainstream in advertising

From ads that get clicked on by bots, to hidden fees and an overall lack of transparency, the digital ad ecosystem has been under fire of late on a number of fronts.

A number of big brands and marketers are attempting to fight that by betting on blockchain, the distributed ledger technology that underpins the cryptocurrency bitcoin.

By the end of 2019, advertisers will be able to follow every dollar that leaves their coffers, Forrester predicts, and be able to see exactly how much they are paying, and for what, at every step of the way.

Big brands like Kellogg's, Kimberly-Clark, Pfizer, and Unilever are already leading the way by participating in a blockchain pilot program powered by IBM and Media Ocean that aims to bring complete transparency to media-buying.

"Blockchain will make an important entrance in 2018, by exposing the value and costs of all the steps in the media supply chain," Colburn said. "But it will be a couple of years before blockchain is ready to make the impact that marketers are really looking for – impression-level reporting that will expose advertising fraud."

Hyper-targeting will give way to hyper-focus on creative

The rollout of GDPR sent many advertisers scrambling, casting a shadow on a future where they could hyper-target media, especially those brands lacking in first-party customer data.

But as the use of consumer data comes under increasing scrutiny, the focus, at least for advertisers, will turn back to powerful creative, according to Forrester.

In 2019, advertisers will start turning to creative adtech vendors like RevJet and Thunder to create contextually relevant ads cued by both first-party data, as well as data around the weather, time of day, and live events.

Creative adtech will also improve ad quality and cross-channel storytelling. More brands will refrain from stalking consumers around the internet with cheap-looking, product-focused display ads, according to Forrester.

"Despite what marketers and advertisers think, the media industry isn't nearly as customer-obsessed as it could be," Colburn said. "I am most bullish on advertisers trading in their hyper-targeting obsession for a hyper-focus on creative in advertising – it will improve both the customer experience and overall results."

A bidding war will break out for LiveRamp, and Google will take the cake

Several players – from Adobe and Salesforce to ad holding companies – have had their eyes on LiveRamp since Axciom's data marketing services were acquired by IPG.

The competition is only going to heat up more, with a huge bidding war breaking out for LiveRamp, according to Forrester.

Forrester thinks the ultimate winner at the end though will be Google, which will outbid everyone with its trove of cash, making LiveRamp's data available for customers using its newly branded and consolidated adtech stack, Google Marketing Platform.

"With these acquisitions, the big keep getting bigger," Colburn said.

Ratusan akun itu dicurigai mencoba menginterfensi pemilihan midterm (paruh waktu) Amerika Serikat (AS).

Pemilu Paruh Waktu AS 2018, Republik Pertahankan Dominasi di Kursi Senat

Partai Republik diproyeksikan mempertahankan dominasi mereka atas Senat Amerika Serikat atau US Senate (DPD) setelah berhasil memperoleh keunggulan kursi dalam pemilu paruh waktu AS (mid-term election) yang diselenggarakan pada 6 November 2018.

Menurut perhitungan awal The Associated Press, Republik memperoleh 51 kursi, sementara Demokrat memperoleh 42 kursi.

  • Facebook says the 115 accounts it pulled down this week for meddling in the midterms may have been linked to notorious troll farm, the Internet Research Agency.
  • Facebook was not categorical in drawing a link between the inauthentic behavior and the IRA, but said there were reasons to suspect a connection.
  • Facebook has been much more vigilant and transparent about suspected meddling than it was during the 2016 presidential election.

Facebook pulled down 115 Instagram and Facebook accounts this week over fears they were meddling in the midterms. Now, Facebook has said the accounts may be linked to Russia's notorious troll farm.

In a statement sent to Business Insider, and first reported by TechCrunch, the company said it removed the 85 Instagram accounts and 30 Facebook profiles because of suspected ties to the Russia-based Internet Research Agency (IRA).

Although Facebook was not categorical in drawing a link between the meddling and the IRA, it pointed to the fact that a website connected to the troll farm published a list of Instagram accounts they claim to have created.

Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, said (emphasis ours):

"Last night, following a tip-off from law enforcement, we blocked over 100 Facebook and Instagram accounts due to concerns that they were linked to the Russia-based Internet Research Agency (IRA) and engaged in coordinated inauthentic behavior, which is banned from our services.

"This evening a website claiming to be associated with the IRA published a list of Instagram accounts they claim to have created. We had already blocked most of these accounts yesterday, and have now blocked the rest.

"This is a timely reminder that these bad actors won't give up — and why it’s so important we work with the US government and other technology companies to stay ahead."

It is not the first time this year that Facebook has pulled down accounts over fears they were linked to the IRA. The social network announced in July it had banned 32 pages and accounts that were engaged in "coordinated inauthentic behavior." At the time, the firm said the accounts behaved in a similar way to the IRA and had "connected with known IRA accounts."

Facebook has been much more vigilant and transparent about suspected meddling than it was during the 2016 presidential election, when Russian operatives created fake Facebook accounts that pushed both right- and left-wing narratives in an attempt to sow political division. Facebook even set up a "war room" to monitor its billions of users in an attempt to weed out inauthentic behaviour.

LONDON (AP) — Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has rejected a request to appear before an international parliamentary committee delving into the questions around fake news. The rebuff came after Damian Collins, the head of the U.K. parliament's media committee, joined forces with his Canadian counterpart in hopes of pressuring Zuckerberg to testify, as he did before the U.S Congress. Facebook rejected the invitation to appear before the so-called "international grand committee" session Nov. 27, arguing it wasn't possible for Zuckerberg to appear before all parliaments. Collins says pressure is building, with counterparts in Australia, Argentina and Ireland having joined the grand committee in the time since Zuckerberg was invited.

Facebook, Google, Amazon, come contrastare i monopoli      Cache   Translate Page

  • Facebook Messenger will soon introduce a feature that lets you delete a message up to 10 minutes after it's already been sent.
  • The new feature was spotted in the release notes for the newest Messenger update, but for now it's still listed as "coming soon."
  • Facebook said in April it planned to add such a feature after the platform was caught quietly deleting messages that CEO Mark Zuckerberg had sent via Messenger.

Facebook will soon allow you to delete messages that you've already sent via its Messenger app.

Plans for the "unsend" feature were found in the release notes for the newest Messenger app update made available to iOS users Tuesday. The note states that users will be able to remove a message within 10 minutes of sending it "if you accidentally send the wrong photo, incorrect information or message the wrong thread."

The release notes say that the feature is "coming soon," but didn't give an exact date for when it would arrive on users' phones.

Facebook first floated plans for rolling out the "unsend" feature back in April. The announcement was in response to TechCrunch's report that the social network had been quietly deleting old messages from its CEO Mark Zuckerberg over fears of future hacks and data breaches. The revelations were met with heavy backlash.

Months passed by without any additional updates from Facebook on the feature, but TechCrunch reported last month that the feature was being tested internally, as evidenced by screenshots posted on Twitter.

Read more: Facebook was caught secretly deleting Mark Zuckerberg's sent messages — here's what it's doing about it

Experts have previously expressed concerns that allowing users to "unsend" messages could have severe implications, since such a feature could allow evidence of harassment and abuse via Messenger to be erased.

But similar features already exist on other apps that Facebook owns: WhatsApp users were given the ability last year to delete messages for up to an hour after they're initially sent, and Instagram has let you "unsend" messages ever since direct messaging was first added to the platform in 2013.

The addition of the "unsend" feature on Facebook Messenger is in addition to the app's "secret conversations" feature, where users can have their messages expire after a set amount of time.

So, that's a "No" RSVP from Facebook.

Facebook has declined the UK and Canadian lawmakers' invitation to Mark Zuckerberg to testify before a joint international committee.

In October, UK and Canadian officials banded together to investigate political manipulation online. They invited Mark Zuckerberg to testify, particularly on Cambridge Analytica.

You can finally take back your ill-conceived messages on Facebook.

Facebook Messenger will soon roll out an unsend feature, which will give users a grand total of ten minutes to unsend a message, wiping it from your chat history. This will remove the message from the recipient's inbox as well.

Facebook announced the upcoming feature in the "coming soon" section of its latest rundown detailing what’s new in the version 191.0 release of Facebook Messenger on the App Store.

Facebook’s release notes read:

Currently, while Facebook users can delete messages that they sent from their own inbox, the recipient of the message can still see them. At least, that’s how its worked for users whose name isn’t Mark Zuckerberg. Read more...

Facebook is the latest company going from clicks to bricks. The Internet giant responsible for social networks Facebook and Instagram has opened nine pop-up stores inside Macy’s locations across the United States to sell products from 100 small businesses and digital-native brands which are present on their platforms.

“Every day, million of people discover brands and products they love on Facebook and Instagram. This holiday season, we’re excited to bring the magic of this discovery into Macy’s retail stores”, said Facebook in a statement. Selected brands encompass several product categories, including apparel, food, beauty and lifestyle.

Facebook has paid the fee for the selected merchants to be able to showcase their products at The Market @ Macy’s, a space for temporary businesses inaugurated earlier this year. However, the company led by Mark Zuckerberg will not take a share of their sales revenue. The initiative probably aims to bring more small entrepreneurs into their social networks and encourage those already present to advertise.

Macy’s customers will be able to find Facebook’s pop-up at Macy’s locations in New York, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, San Antonio, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. The stores will run until February 2.

Facebook users have anticipated a Messenger “unsend” feature for months, but the company still hasn’t provided one.
