          Prairie State did its part in the Great War      Cache   Translate Page
Editor’s note: The Illinois Press Association and the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors present this Illinois Bicentennial feature in advance of the state’s 200th birthday on Dec. 3. Stories published up to this date can be found at 200illinois.com.

Artie Bennett, a Marine from Clinton, Ill., was cut down by a hail of bullets 100 years ago in a far-flung foreign field, giving his life for his country in America’s first global war.

A letter home from a fellow soldier said Bennett, 18, had been attacking a machine gun nest as the Marines fought, successfully, to stem a German advance threatening the French capital of Paris in June 1918, the last summer of World War I.

The fallen Marine had lingered for an hour before dying, one of the first casualties from Illinois. The letter honoring him, typed by fellow Marine Pvt. John W. Olsen, read: “He passed away quietly, without a complaint, and was laid to rest near where he fell.”

Immaculately tended American cemeteries in France, and faded memorials at home, are among the few tangible reminders of the “Great War” that began on July 28, 1914, and ended, after 18 million soldiers and civilians had died on all sides, with an armistice that went into effect at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918.

Now, nearing the 100th anniversary of the war’s end, the push is on to recall and honor the men and women of Illinois, and all across America, who suffered and sacrificed for their nation.

Congress has created a United States World War I Centennial Commission, which is overseeing commemorations and fundraising for a World War I memorial in Washington, D.C.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a proclamation announcing the Illinois National Guard and Chicago’s Pritzker Military Museum & Library will lead the effort to ensure the Land of Lincoln remembers its role in the Great War.

A World War I Centennial Committee has been drafted to aid in that state mission, and it’s chaired by Jeanne Hamacher, who has taught high school history classes. She said the key lesson to learn is that Illinois went to extraordinary efforts to support a war that shaped the world we live in, right up through today.

“When I was teaching, I did a lesson where I could link basically every conflict the United States has had (since World War I) back to World War I in some shape or form,” Hamacher said. She said Illinois had helped win the war, and the war changed the world forever.

“Schools need to teach this, we need to remember,” she added.

The United States declared war on Germany and its Central Powers allies on April 6, 1917, and Illinois became part of the vast conflict that would mark America’s emergence as a global superpower.

The United States sent 4,734,991 soldiers and sailors to Europe and suffered 116,516 deaths, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Records from the Illinois Office of the Adjutant General list more than 351,000 Illinois men who served in the Army, Navy and Marines during World War I, and some 5,000 of them died.

One of every 12 enlistees in the Army hailed from Illinois, and each left a mark.

The American Legion Post in Clinton is Crang-Bennett Post 103, named for the fallen Marine and also Army Sgt. 1st Class Welby Crang, who lived about a block from Bennett and died in France in 1917 from pneumonia.

Ron Devore, 86, is a member of the Post 103 executive board and a former post commander who has fought to keep the memory of the World War I soldiers alive. He said the post was founded in 1919 not just to honor fallen veterans, but to help and lobby for those who returned home alive, if not always in one piece.

“Some of these guys had been gassed, their lungs were burned, they had missing limbs and disabilities; they were messed up for life, and they weren’t getting anything from the government,” Devore said. “Veterans knew that, if there was a bunch of them banded together, they could have a voice in Washington, D.C.”

Devore’s wife, Marjorie, whose father was a World War I veteran, vividly recalls the returned soldiers’ sense of pride despite all their trials and tribulations. She said that pride had been matched by the patriotic fervor of their communities at home. “My dad always said everybody had supported the war effort,” she said.

The civilian push to buoy the troops with maximum support on the home front was extraordinary. Illinois mobilized vast forces of industry, and especially industrialized agriculture, and turned them into an arsenal of democracy that flooded the American war effort with food, war materiel and cash.

Illinois created the State Council of Defense, the job of which was to persuade, corral and control civilian production, from engineering to seed corn, to fuel the war machine. When the council produced its wrap-up report in 1919, it was suffused with pride at the sheer wartime output from the people of Illinois.

It pointed out that the state’s agricultural production for 1918 had been geared to meet the needs of the wartime “national food authorities” and had been the third-largest crop harvest in state history, worth close to $880 million (about $15 billion in today’s dollars).

“Notwithstanding the drain upon manpower, the state in 1918 turned out manufactured products valued at $6 billion. ... Of these, $2 billion-worth were on direct war contracts, but virtually all were war contributions, for Illinois factories are not largely given to the production of luxuries or non-essentials,” the council reported.

It also lauded the generosity of Illinois citizens, who raised $45 million during the war to support everything from the Red Cross to the YMCA and the Salvation Army.

Timothy Kovalcik, associate professor of history at Millikin University, said it’s important to understand the wartime atmosphere gripping Illinois and the entire nation.

“Support for the war was at fever pitch, and the propaganda was incredibly successful,” Kovalcik said.

A state with a significant population of Germanic ancestry (Teutopolis in Effingham County, for example, means “City of the Teutons,” or Germans, and is typical of many towns founded by German settlers) had no trouble raising troops.

“The population of German ancestry volunteered at massive rates to show their patriotism,” Kovalcik said. “They wanted to prove they were true Americans.”

With troops rushing forward and humming factories full of nose-to-grindstone workers who had shunted aside labor grumbles for the greater patriotic good, the State Council of Defense believed it had glimpsed capitalism’s promised land.

“All war undertakings succeeded by virtue of the spirit of cooperation,” it concluded in its final 1919 report. “Since this unity of thought and purpose can be achieved under stress of war, why can it not be approximated, at least, in time of peace?”

But it was not to be. Kovalcik said a big influence that had pushed President Woodrow Wilson to steer America into the war is that much of it on the British side had been financed by American banks. They stood to lose their shirts big time if Britain and its Allies, fatigued with crippling losses by 1917, were defeated. And yet when the American intervention was over and the war won, the demand that had quadrupled the U.S. economy between 1914 and 1917 suddenly collapsed, taking jobs with it.

By the dawn of the Great Depression in the 1930s, jobless and hungry World War I veterans and their families, some 17,000 of them, had marched on Washington, D.C. They were demanding early payment of war service bonuses promised by Congress but not due to be distributed until 1945. On July 28, President Herbert Hoover ordered in the Army to help the police clear the protesters and, in street battles that followed, two veterans were killed.

Finally, in 1936, Congress overrode the veto of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and the veterans were paid their bonuses nine years early.

          Por Favor Vote Hoy-- PorTodo Nuestro Bien      Cache   Translate Page

This isn't a new poll but it could be the numbers we see on our TV screens tonight. Say a prayer. A result like that in Texas today is going to be dependent on, among other things, Latino turnout. Virtually all polling models assume Latinos will not turn out in large numbers. If that changes today, say goodbye to Ted Cruz and... HELLO BETO! Nearly 39% of Texans are Latino. BETO will win if they vote today in larger numbers than has been usual. AND, a big Latino turnout in Texas today could also help in more than a few districts with big Hispanic populations-- here's who has the most to gain:
TX-02- 29.6% Todd Litton
TX-07- 31.5% Lizzie Fletcher
TX-10- 25.9% Mike Siegel
TX-21- 27.7% Joseph Kopser
TX-23- 70.8% Gina Jones
TX-27- 50.8% Eric Holguin
TX-32- 28.3% Colin Allred

California is another state with a huge Hispanic population-- like Texas, around 39%-- where an oversized Latino turnout today could be determinative, maybe even electing a progressive senator, Kevin de León, instead of reelecting the conservative Dianne Feinstein, with a shameful anti-immigrant history unworthy of our state. In California congressional races, a big Latino turnout will make all the difference in 7 close, key races:
CA-10- 40.0% Josh Harder
CA-21- 72.1% TJ Cox
CA-22- 45.9% Andrew Janz (Devin Nunes' district)
CA-25- 37.9% Katie Hill
CA-39- 34.6% Gil Cisneros
CA-49- 25.7% Mike Levin
CA-50- 29.7% Ammar Campa-Najjar
And then there are the key Senate races in Arizona (30.1% Latino) and Nevada (27.1% Latino) which have both tightened up in the last month.

So... has Trump been enough of a determinant to rouse Latino voters up in big numbers tomorrow? All cycle, the answer has been a disappointing "NO!" But that seems to have changed in the last few weeks. Yesterday, Chris Kahn and Dan Trotta, reporting for Reuters, wrote that a new IPSOS tracking poll shows a
marked increase in Latino enthusiasm for voting this week.

Hispanics are more interested in voting this year than in the last U.S. congressional midterm elections in 2014 and their enthusiasm outpaces that of all U.S. adults, according to a Reuters/Ipsos national tracking poll released on Sunday.

The poll also found likely Hispanic voters nearly twice as inclined to support Democrats for the House of Representatives as Republicans in Tuesday's elections.

Voter registration groups are using Republican President Donald Trump's nationalist, anti-immigrant rhetoric as an opportunity to drive up Latino enthusiasm. In an illustration of their passion, one group that is part of an alliance that has reached out to more than 1 million potential voters in Arizona took its name from the Spanish word for "fight."

...Latinos could play a crucial role in several races, from tight Senate battles in Arizona and Texas to Florida's close Senate and governor's races. In California, the flourishing Latino population has helped put in play some Republican-controlled House districts Democrats hope to flip.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, taken Sept. 1 to Oct. 29, found that 36 percent of Hispanic voters said they were "certain" to vote, up from 27 percent in 2014. That increase is nearly double the five percentage point rise in voter enthusiasm among all Americans over the same period, the poll showed.

Enthusiasm appears especially high among Hispanic Democrats.

Forty-two percent of Hispanic Democrats said they were "certain" to vote, up from 29 percent in 2014. Among likely Hispanic voters, 60 percent said they will vote for a Democratic candidate for the House, and 32 percent would back a Republican.

Hispanics are a politically diverse group, with 55 percent of likely voters identifying as Democrats, 31 percent as Republicans and 12 percent as independent, the poll showed.

Just over half, 53 percent, of likely Hispanic voters said they were "very motivated" to pick a candidate for Congress who opposes Trump, compared with 43 percent of all likely voters, 75 percent of likely Democratic voters and 9 percent of likely Republican voters.

...America's 29 million Latinos account for nearly 13 percent of eligible voters this year, but their turnout rate has declined since 2006, according to the Pew Research Center. Only 27 percent of eligible Latinos voted in the last midterm elections in 2014, and only 16 percent of those aged 18 to 35, Pew said.

          The Midterm Elections Show a Major Shift in America's Attitude Toward Charter School Privatization      Cache   Translate Page
It's not hard to find news stories about waste, fraud, abuse and downright theft in the school privatization sector.

For years, the policy window for privatizing public schools has been wide open, and what was once considered an extreme or at least rare idea—such as outsourcing public schools to private contractors with few strings attached, or giving parents public tax money to subsidize their children’s private school tuitions—has become widespread as charter schools are now legal in all but a handful of states, and voucher programs have proliferated in many forms across the country.

Politicians of all stripes have been extremely reluctant, especially at the national level, to lean into a real discussion of the negative consequences of redirecting public education funds to private operators, with little to no regulation for how the money is being spent. Candidates have instead stuck to a “safe boilerplate” of education being “good” and essential to “the workforce” without much regard to who provides it.

But policy windows can be fleeting (remember “the deficit crisis”?), and multiple factors can rejigger the public’s views. Indeed, in campaigns that candidates are waging in the upcoming midterm elections, one can see the policy window on school privatization gradually shifting back to support for public schools and increasing skepticism about doling out cash to private education entrepreneurs.

‘Vulture Schools’

It is the wave of new progressive candidates who appear to be the ones who are shifting the policy window on school privatization.

Take the campaign of progressive superstar Randy Bryce, running for the congressional seat Paul Ryan held in Wisconsin. The Badger State recently expanded statewide a voucher program that was confined to Milwaukee and Racine, and charter schools have expanded significantly under the leadership of Republican Governor Scott Walker.

On his website, Bryce provides the usual bromides about “every child deserves a quality education” and “charter, private and traditional public schools can all thrive,” but he then adds the curious statement that “no student should see money taken from their classroom in order to serve another.” What does that mean?

Click through the “learn more” prompt and you’ll watch a video in which he makes a much stronger statement about the problems of privatizing public schools. “We can’t afford two school systems, a public one and a private one,” he elaborates, and he blasts “vulture schools that don’t have the same accountability and don’t have the same rules.”

The example of the school he brings up that closed after head count day, and the owners “moved to Florida,” is a real school run by a husband-and-wife team who abruptly closed their Milwaukee private school, after taking more than $2.3 million of state voucher money, and moved to Florida to start another one.

These sorts of scandals have become nearly daily occurrences in the privately operated school industry.

Schools for Scandals

The latest scandal breaks from Arizona, where the state auditor found that parents who used the state’s voucher-like education savings program spent more than $700,000 on cosmetics, music, movies, clothing, sports apparel, and other personal items. Some even tried to withdraw cash with the state-issued debit cards. The state has not recovered any of the money. But the state legislature recently passed a bill to expand the voucher program, which is now being challenged by a recall effort on the ballot on Tuesday.

Earlier this month, in Florida, the founder of a company that operated charter schools in seven counties was found guilty of using those schools to steer millions of dollars into his personal accounts. In one school district alone, “nearly 1,000 students were affected by the chaos and disruption that ensued.”

In California, a recent audit of a charter school found the married couple who ran the school made almost $850,000 in less than two years and secretly hired people and created positions without approval from the school’s board.

A video from Florida that went viral shows an African American boy being denied admission to a private school that his parents used public school voucher money to enroll him in. An enormous white cross adorns the school’s front lawn. This and other similar occurrences of discrimination by voucher-funded private schools in the Sunshine State has prompted the NAACP to call for an investigation into all private schools accepting vouchers. Around the same time, an op-ed appeared in a Florida newspaper recounting the scandal of a voucher-funded private school that stiffed teachers and skipped rent payments. Teachers filed formal complaints about a “lack of basic school supplies,” academic “irregularities,” student safety concerns, and inadequate staffing. But when the school was evicted, it simply moved to a new location and started the whole flimflam all over again.

In Georgia, a police investigation of a charter school found the governing board terminated the school’s leader, made no public announcement of the firing, and never told parents why. At another Georgia charter school, parents were told to “watch your bank accounts” after 6,000 school records were mysteriously transferred to a personal email account.

In Nevada, an analysis of the state’s charter school industry found they increase racial and economic segregation by enrolling far fewer low-income kids and far more white and Asian students than public schools do. A state audit of a charter school in New Mexico found tens of thousands of dollars have been stolen by the school’s employees.

Some Regulatory Control, Please

One doesn’t need to “cherry pick” to find news stories about waste, fraud, abuse, and downright theft in the school privatization sector. The above examples all happened within the last month.

Of course, financial scandals happen in public schools too. That’s why they’re heavily regulated. But the notion that “parent choice” can keep charter schools and private voucher schools clean and honest is disproven nearly every day.

In Washington, D.C., there now seems to be an inkling to address the mountain of fraud created by charter schools and voucher programs. Prompted by a massive scandal involving an online charter school in Ohio, Democratic senators want the top watchdog agency for the federal government to investigate the business practices of online charter schools.

Their investigations can’t stop there. A recent analysis of states with the most charter schools and the most charter closures finds the federal government dumps millions into these schools but provides little oversight and guidance for what to do when these schools close, leaving millions of dollars in taxpayer money at risk to scamming.

More Progressive Democrats Against Privatization

The endless revelations of corruptions in the charter school and school voucher racket are now what’s driving policy, more so than dry, empirical studies about whether privatizing public schools “works” academically.

You can see that especially in the campaigns of progressive standouts like Andrew Gillum, who is running against Ron DeSantis to be the next governor of Florida, a state that is rife with charter school and voucher scandals.

While members of the family of U.S. Secretary DeVos are bankrolling the DeSantis campaign to push their agenda for charters and vouchers, Gillum is determined to stanch the flow of public dollars to the state’s many voucher programs and make charters more accountable for how they spend public money.

A review compiled by the Intercept of progressive candidates running for Congress singles out Leslie Cockburn running in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District. Cockburn opposes school vouchers and shows her skepticism for charter schools by noticing their problems with teacher turnover and their lack of oversight. At a recent meet-and-greet, she said, “We want more funding for public schools, not less. We need to not take away funds from public schools and give them to charter schools or private schools.”

Another candidate, Kara Eastman, running in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, says on her website, “We must resist the administration’s political nominees who advertise the benefits of expanding charter schools.”

Among People’s Action’s endorsements in congressional races is Anthony Brindisi, running in New York’s 22nd Congressional District. Brindisi has pledged “to fight any and all attempts to privatize our public education system for corporate gain.”

A candidate endorsed by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), Dana Balter, running in New York’s 24th Congressional District, is a special education teacher turned Syracuse professor who got the endorsement of the powerful state teachers’ union largely because she “understands that giving money away to charter schools is not the right approach.”

Candidates for state houses have similar positions. In the race for West Virginia Senate 1st District seat that pits Democrat William Ihlenfeld against Republican Senate Majority Leader Ryan Ferns, Ihlenfeld says, “I am not a supporter of charter schools … I don’t think charter schools are a good idea for West Virginia. I don’t think we can afford to allow the private sector to come in and profit from precious education resources.”

Of course, some progressive candidates still stick to the old script of “investing in schools” with little regard to who runs them, and a few still cling to the school privatization cause. But the trend that made privatizing public schools an acceptable if not preferential policy has at least stalled, if not completely been thrown into reverse.

          How to Create Generative Art In Less Than 100 Lines Of Code      Cache   Translate Page
What is generative art?

Generative art is the output of a system that makes its own decisions about the piece, rather than a human. The system could be as simple as a single python program, as long as it has rules and some aspect of randomness.

With programming, it’s pretty straightforward to come up with rules and constraints. That’s all conditional statements are. Having said that, finding ways to make these rules create something interesting can be tricky.

How to Create Generative Art In Less Than 100 Lines Of Code
Conway’s Game of Life (Labeled forreuse)

The Game of Life is a famous set of four simple rules that determine the “birth” and “death” of each cell in the system. Each of the rules play a part in advancing the system through each generation. Although the rules are simple and easy to understand, complex patterns quickly begin to emerge and ultimately form fascinating results.

Rules may be responsible for creating the foundation of something interesting, but even something as exciting as Conway’s Game of Life is predictable. Since the four rules are the determining factors for each generation, the way to produce unforeseeable results is to introduce randomization at the starting state of the cells. Beginning with a random matrix will make each execution unique without needing to change the rules.

The best examples of generative art are the ones that find a combination of predictability and randomness in order to create something interesting that is also statistically irreproducible .

Why should you tryit?

Not all side projects are created equal, and generative art may not be something you’re inclined to spend time on. If you decide to work on a project however, then you can expect these benefits:

Experience ― Generative art is just another opportunity to hone some new and old skills. It can serve as a gateway to practicing concepts like algorithms, data structures, and even new languages. Tangible Results ― In the programming world we rarely get to see any thing physical come out of our efforts, or at least I don’t. Right now I have a few posters in my living room displaying prints of my generative art and I love that programming is responsible for that. Attractive Projects ― We’ve all had the experience of explaining a personal project to someone, possibly even during an interview, without an easy way to convey the effort and results of the project. Generative art speaks for itself, and most anyone will be impressed by your creations, even if they can’t fully understand the methods. Where should youstart?

Getting started with generative art is the same process as any project, the most crucial step is to come up with an idea or find one to build upon. Once you have a goal in mind, then you can start working on the technology required to achieve it.

Most of my generative art projects have been accomplished in Python. It’s a fairly easy language to get used to and it has some incredible packages available to help with image manipulation, such as Pillow .

Luckily for you, there’s no need to search very far for a starting point, because I’ve provided some code down below for you to play with.

Sprite Generator

This project started when I saw a post showing off a sprite generator written in javascript. The program created 5x5 pixel art sprites with some random color options and its output resembled multi-colored space invaders.

I knew that I wanted to practice image manipulation in Python, so I figured I could just try to recreate this concept on my own. Additionally, I thought that I could expand on it since the original project was so limited in the size of the sprites. I wanted to be able to specify not only the size, but also the number of them and even the size of the image.

Here’s a look at two different outputs from the solution I ended up with:

How to Create Generative Art In Less Than 100 Lines Of Code
7x7 30 1900
How to Create Generative Art In Less Than 100 Lines Of Code
43x43 6 1900

These two images don’t resemble each other at all, but they’re both the results of the same system. Not to mention, due to the complexity of the image and the randomness of the sprite generation, there is an extremely high probability that even with the same arguments, these images will forever be one of a kind. I love it.

The environment

If you want to start playing around with the sprite generator, there’s a little foundation work that has to be done first.

Setting up a proper environment with Python can be tricky. If you haven’t worked with Python before, you’ll probably need to download Python 2.7.10. I initially had trouble setting up the environment, so if you start running into problems, you can do what I did and look into virtual environments . Last but not least, make sure you have Pillow installed as well.

Once you have the environment set up, you can copy my code into a file with extension.py and execute with the following command:

python spritething.py [SPRITE_DIMENSIONS] [NUMBER] [IMAGE_SIZE]

For example, the command to create the first matrix of sprites from above would be:

python spritething.py 7 30 1900 The code import PIL, random, sys from PIL import Image, ImageDraw origDimension = 1500 r = lambda: random.randint(50,215) rc = lambda: (r(), r(), r()) listSym = [] def create_square(border, draw, randColor, element, size): if (element == int(size/2)): draw.rectangle(border, randColor) elif (len(listSym) == element+1): draw.rectangle(border,listSym.pop()) else: listSym.append(randColor) draw.rectangle(border, randColor) def create_invader(border, draw, size): x0, y0, x1, y1 = border squareSize = (x1-x0)/size randColors = [rc(), rc(), rc(), (0,0,0), (0,0,0), (0,0,0)] i = 1 for y in range(0, size): i *= -1 element = 0 for x in range(0, size): topLeftX = x*squareSize + x0 topLeftY = y*squareSize + y0 botRightX = topLeftX + squareSize botRightY = topLeftY + squareSize create_square((topLeftX, topLeftY, botRightX, botRightY), draw, random.choice(randColors), element, size) if (element == int(size/2) or element == 0): i *= -1; element += i def main(size, invaders, imgSize): origDimension = imgSize origImage = Image.new('RGB', (origDimension, origDimension)) draw = ImageDraw.Draw(origImage) invaderSize = origDimension/invaders padding = invaderSize/size for x in range(0, invaders): for y in range(0, invaders): topLeftX = x*invaderSize + padding/2 topLeftY = y*invaderSize + padding/2 botRightX = topLeftX + invaderSize - padding botRightY = topLeftY + invaderSize - padding create_invader((topLeftX, topLeftY, botRightX, botRightY

How to build a web app using Python’s Flask and Google App Engine

If you want to build web apps in a very short amount of time using python, then Flask is a fantastic option.

Flask is a small and powerful web framework (also known as “ microframework ”). It is also very easy to learn and simple to code. Based on my personal experience, it was easy to start as a beginner.

Before this project, my knowledge of Python was mostly limited to Data Science. Yet, I was able to build this app and create this tutorial in just a few hours.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to build a simple weather app with some dynamic content using an API. This tutorial is a great starting point for beginners. You will learn to build dynamic content from APIs and deploying it on Google Cloud.

The end product can be viewed here .

To create a weather app, we will need to request an API key from Open Weather Map . The free version allows up to 60 calls per minute, which is more than enough for this app. The Open Weather Map conditions icons are not very pretty. We will replace them with some of the 200+ weather icons from Erik Flowers instead.

How to build a web app using Python’s Flask and Google App Engine

This tutorial will also cover: (1) basic CSS design, (2) basic HTML with Jinja, and (3) deploying a Flask app on Google Cloud.

The steps we’ll take are listed below:

Step 0: Installing Flask (this tutorial doesn’t cover Python and PIP installation) Step 1: Building the App structure Step 2: Creating the Main App code with the API request Step 3: Creating the 2 pages for the App (Main and Result) with Jinja , HTML, and CSS Step 4: Deploying and testing on your local laptop Step 5: Deploying on Google Cloud. Step 0 ― Installing Flask and the libraries we will use in a virtual environment.

We’ll build this project using a virtual environment. But why do we need one?

With virtual environments, you create a local environment specific for each projects. You can choose libraries you want to use without impacting your laptop environment. As you code more projects on your laptop, each project will need different libraries. With a different virtual environment for each project, you won’t have conflicts between your system and your projects or between projects.

Run Command Prompt (cmd.exe) with administrator privileges. Not using admin privileges will prevent you from using pip.
How to build a web app using Python’s Flask and Google App Engine
(Optional) Install virtualenv and virtualenvwrapper-win with PIP. If you already have these system libraries, please jump to the next step. #Optional pip install virtualenvwrapper-win pip install virtualenv
How to build a web app using Python’s Flask and Google App Engine
Create your folder with the name “WeatherApp” and make a virtual environment with the name “venv” (it can take a bit of time) #Mandatory mkdir WeatherApp cd WeatherApp virtualenv venv
How to build a web app using Python’s Flask and Google App Engine
Activate your virtual environment with “call” on windows (same as “source” for linux). This step changes your environment from the system to the project local environment. call venv\Scripts\activate.bat
How to build a web app using Python’s Flask and Google App Engine
Create a requirements.txt file that includes Flask and the other libraries we will need in your WeatherApp folder, then save the file. The requirements file is a great tool to also keep track of the libraries you are using in your project. Flask==0.12.3
click==6.7
gunicorn==19.7.1
itsdangerous==0.24
Jinja2==2.9.6
MarkupSafe==1.0
pytz==2017.2
requests==2.13.0
Werkzeug==0.12.1
How to build a web app using Python’s Flask and Google App Engine
Install the requirements and their dependencies. You are now ready to build your WeatherApp. This is the final step to create your local environment. pip install -r requirements.txt
How to build a web app using Python’s Flask and Google App Engine
Step 1 ― Building the App structure

You have taken care of the local environment. You can now focus on developing your application. This step is to make sure the proper folder and file structure is in place. The next step will take care of the backend code.

Create two Python files (main.py, weather.py) and two folders (static with a subfolder img, templates).
How to build a web app using Python’s Flask and Google App Engine
Step 2 ― Creating the Main App code with the API request (Backend)

With the structure set up, you can start coding the backend of your application. Flask’s “Hello world” example only uses one Python file. This tutorial uses two files to get you comfortable with importing functions to your main app.

The main.py is the server that routes the user to the homepage and to the result page. The weather.py file creates a function with API that retrieves the weather data based on the city selected. The function populates the resulting page.

Edit main.py with the following code and save #!/usr/bin/env python from pprint import pprint as pp from flask import Flask, flash, redirect, render_template, request, url_for from weather import query_api app = Flask(__name__) @app.route('/')
def index():
return render_template(
'weather.html',
data=[{'name':'Toronto'}, {'name':'Montreal'}, {'name':'Calgary'},
{'name':'Ottawa'}, {'name':'Edmonton'}, {'name':'Mississauga'},
{'name':'Winnipeg'}, {'name':'Vancouver'}, {'name':'Brampton'},
{'name':'Quebec'}]) @app.route("/result" , methods=['GET', 'POST'])
def result():
data = []
error = None
select = request.form.get('comp_select')
resp = query_api(select)
pp(resp)
if resp:
data.append(resp)
if len(data) != 2:
error = 'Bad Response from Weather API'
return render_template(
'result.html',
data=data,
error=error) if __name__=='__main__': app.run(debug=True) Request a free API key on Open Weather Map
How to build a web app using Python’s Flask and Google App Engine
Edit weather.py with the following code (updating the API_KEY) and save from datetime import datetime
import os
import pytz
import requests
import math
API_KEY = 'XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX'
API_URL = ('http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?q={}&mode=json&units=metric&appid={}') def query_api(city): try: print(API_URL.format(city, API_KEY)) data = requests.get(API_URL.format(city, API_KEY)).json() except Exception as exc: print(exc) data = None return data Step 3 ― Creating pages with Jinja , HTML, and CSS (Frontend)

This step is about creating what the user will see.

The HTML pages weather and result are the one the backend main.py will route to and give the visual structure. The CSS file will bring the final touch. There is no javascript in this tutorial (the front end is pure HTML and CSS).

It was my first time using the Jinja2 template library to populate the HTML file. It surprised me how easy it was to bring dynamic images or use functions (e.g. rounding weather). Definitely a fantastic template engine.

Create the first HTML file in the templates folder (weather.html) <!doctype html> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="{{ url_for('static', filename='style.css') }}"> <div class="center-on-page"> <h1>Weather in a City</h1> <form class="form-inline" method="POST" action="{{ url_for('result') }}"> <div class="select"> <select name="comp_select" class="selectpicker form-control"> {% for o in data %} <option value="{{ o.name }}">{{ o.name }}</option> {% endfor %} </select> </div> <button type="submit" class="btn">Go</button> </form> Create the second HTML file in the templates folder (result.html) <!doctype html> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="{{ url_for('static', filename='style.css') }}"> <div class="center-on-page"> {% for d in data %} {% set my_string = "static/img/" + d['weather'][0]['icon']+ ".svg" %} <h1> <img src="{{ my_string }}" class="svg" fill="white" height="100" vertical-align="middle" width="100"> </h1> <h1>Weather</h1> <h1>{{ d['name'] }}, {{ d['sys']['country'] }}</h1> <h1>{{ d['main']['temp']|round|int}} °C</h1> {% endfor %}
How to build a web app using Python’s Flask and Google App Engine
Add a CSS file in the static folder (style.css) body { color: #161616; font-family: 'Roboto', sans-serif; text-align: center; background-color: currentColor; } .center-on-page { position: absolute; top:50%; left: 50%; transform: translate(-50%,-50%); } h1 { text-align: center; color:#FFFFFF; } img { vertical-align: middle; } /* Reset Select */ select { -webkit-appearance: none; -moz-appearance: none; -ms-appearance: none; appearance: none; outline: 0; box-shadow: none; border: 0 !important; background: #2c3e50; background-image: none; } /* Custom Select */ .select { position: relative; display: block; width: 20em; height: 3em; line-height: 3; background: #2c3e50; overflow: hidden; border-radius: .25em; } select { width: 100%; height: 100%; margin: 0; padding: 0 0 0 .5em; color: #fff; cursor: pointer; } select::-ms-expand { display: none; } /* Arrow */ .select::after { content: '\25BC'; position: absolute; top: 0; right: 0; bottom: 0; padding: 0 1em; background: #34495e; pointer-events: none; } /* Transition */ .select:hover::after { color: #f39c12; } .select::after { -webkit-transition: .25s all ease; -o-transition: .25s all ease; transition: .25s all ease; } button{ -webkit-appearance: none; -moz-appearance: none; -ms-appearance: none; appearance: none; outline: 0; box-shadow: none; border: 0 !important; background: #2c3e50; background-image: none; width: 100%; height: 40px; margin: 0; margin-top: 20px; color: #fff; cursor: pointer; border-radius: .25em; } .button:hover{ color: #f39c12; } Download the images in the img subfolder in static

Step 4 ― Deploying and testinglocally

At this stage, you have set up the environment, the structure, the backend, and the frontend. The only thing left is to launch your app and to enjoy it on your localhost.

Just launch the main.py with Python python main.py Go to the localhost link proposed on cmd with your Web Browser (Chrome, Mozilla, etc.). You should see your new weather app live on your local laptop:)

Step 5 ― Deploying on GoogleCloud

This last step is for sharing your app with the world. It’s important to note that there are plenty of providers for web apps built using Flask. Google Cloud is just one of many. This article does not cover some of the others like AWS, Azure, Heroku…

If the community is interested, I can provide the steps of the other cloud providers in another article and some comparison (pricing, limitations, etc.).

To deploy your app on Google Cloud you will need to 1) Install the SDK, 2) Create a new project, 3) Create 3 local files, 4) Deploy and test online.

Install the SDK following Google’s instructions Connect to your Google Cloud Account (use a $300 coupon if you haven’t already) Create a new project and save the project id (wait a bit until the new project is provisioned)

There are ton of python web frameworks and Flask is one of them but it is not a full stack web framework.

It is “a microframework for Python based on Werkzeug , Jinja 2 and good intentions.” Includes a built-in development server, unit tesing support, and is fully Unicode-enabled with RESTful request dispatching and WSGI compliance .

Installation

To install flask you can go here or just follow below steps:

Step1: Install virtual environment

If you are using Python3 than you don't have to install virtual environment because it already come with venv module to create virtual environments.

If you are using Python 2, the venv module is not available. Instead, install virtualenv .

On linux, virtualenv is provided by your package manager:

//Debian, Ubuntu $ sudo apt-get install python-virtualenv //CentOS, Fedora $ sudo yum install python-virtualenv //Arch $ sudo pacman -S python-virtualenv

If you are on Mac OS X or windows, download get-pip.py , then:

$ sudo python2 Downloads/get-pip.py $ sudo python2 -m pip install virtualenv

On Windows, as an administrator:

\Python27\python.exe Downloads\get-pip.py \Python27\python.exe -m pip install virtualenv Step 2: Create an environment

Create a project folder and a venv folder within:

mkdir myproject cd myproject python3 -m venv venv
Install Flask and create your first web application

On Windows:

py -3 -m venv venv

If you needed to install virtualenv because you are on an older version of Python, use the following command instead:

virtualenv venv

On Windows:

\Python27\Scripts\virtualenv.exe venv Activate the environment

Before you work on your project, activate the corresponding environment:

. venv/bin/activate
Install Flask and create your first web application

On Windows:

venv\Scripts\activate

Your shell prompt will change to show the name of the activated environment.

Step 3: Install Flask

Within the activated environment, use the following command to install Flask:

$ pip install Flask
Install Flask and create your first web application

Flask is now installed:Check out the Quickstart or go to the Documentation .

Create a applcation

So, let's build the most simplest hello world application.

Follow these steps:

As, you are already present in the myproject folder. Create a file `hello.py' and write the below code.

Import the Flask class. An instance of this class will be our WSGI application.

from flask import Flask

Next we create an instance of this class. The first argument is the name of the application’s module or package. If you are using a single module (as in this example), you should use name because depending on if it’s started as application or imported as module the name will be different (' main ' versus the actual import name). This is needed so that Flask knows where to look for templates, static files, and so on.

app = Flask(__name__)

We then use the route() decorator to tell Flask what URL should trigger our function.The function is given a name which is also used to generate URLs for that particular function, and returns the message we want to display in the user’s browser.

@app.route('/') def hello_world(): return 'Hello, World!'

Make sure to not call your application flask.py because this would conflict with Flask itself.

To run the application you can either use the flask command or python’s -m switch with Flask. Before you can do that you need to tell your terminal the application to work with by exporting the FLASK_APP environment variable:

$ export FLASK_APP=hello.py $ flask run //Or you can use $ export FLASK_APP=hello.py $ python -m flask run
Install Flask and create your first web application
Go to http://127.0.0.1:5000/ to see your project running.
Install Flask and create your first web application

          Whither Sri Lankan politics..?       Cache   Translate Page
-By A patriotic Lankan: London-

               Today, 22 million Sri Lankans are worried and concerned about their political future.  Each day is passing with uncertainty and unpredictable outcomes. Some fear that this political chaos will take this beautiful country into dark ages. I’m not a supporter of any political party or any political ideological group but I’m very much concerned about the political road map of Sri Lanka. Where will this political uncertainty take Sri Lanka. It has been reported that business sectors have already begun to suffer due to this man-made political tension. Now, tourists will think twice before they book their holidays in Sri Lanka? This unwanted political move will cost Sri Lankan economy enormously. This unsolicited political strife will inflict a greater damage for Sri Lankan democratic tradition and reputation.

              This political move by Sri Lankan president has divided Sri Lankans into two groups. One group supports president’s move and another one opposes his move to appoint a new PM. We are now at a historical turning point in Sri Lankan political map. It is not about the political future of Maithiri or about the political future of either Ranil or Mahinda.

              It is all about democratic tradition of this country. It is all about people mandate to elect and select whom they wish. It is all about Parliamentary democracy of this country.  It is all about law and order of this country. It is all about civic rights and civil society. It is all about our democratic institutions. It is all about our legal and judiciary institutions in Sri Lanka. It is all about the integrity of our constitution in Sri Lanka. It is all about the consciousness of 6:2 million voters who gave their votes to MS. It is all about the political, economic, educational, legal and social future of 22 million Sri Lanka. We are concerned today not because of changing political leadership from one group to another but we concerned about the fundamentals and foundation of Sri Lankan democracy. They are indeed concerned because all these democratic traditions are at stake today with this move. That is why we are concerned about this abrupt move. The county is fading away from 70 years of democratic tradition into Chinese style dictatorial political system.

           What examples are we setting for the next generation of Sri Lankans.  Are we telling them with this political move it is Ok to grab power by any means? It is a disgrace to see how MPs are bought and sold in public in this political move. The president misused his presidential power to suspend parliament to buy more times to win the majority in Parliament. What type of democracy is this?  Can Maithri fool 22 million Sri Lankans.  He may get the support of some hard-core MR supporters and yet, believe me 80% of Sri Lankans would oppose such a move. 90% of educated people of all communities oppose this type of political move.

                Francis Fukuyama 2011 in his book (Origins of political order from prehumen times to the French revolution) defines the three fundamental components of a modern political order. Accordingly, a strong a capable state, the state’s subordination to a rule of law and government accountability to all citizens are those three components. One of the secrets of the success of western democracy is that western political system managed to subordinate all citizens under the rule of law from Kings, Queens Lords, feudal land lords, elites to ordinary citizens all are equal in the eyes of law. The rule of law is applied equally to all. This was one of the pre-conditions for the success of western democratic tradition. No citizen is above all. That is why even today when MPs break the law in England, they plead guilty, take responsibility and happily accept punishment as dictated by law. Today, in Sri Lanka law makers are breaking their own democratic tradition without any disgrace. What matters is the application of democratic values not mere slogans and words.  China, Russia, and Saudi all claim they are democratic countries, but are they? Do we want to follow their vision of democracy?

            There is no doubt Sri Lanka is trapped in geopolitics of some Asian countries. Sri Lanka is trapped in Indo-Chinese geopolitics. China managed to buy Mahinda with its money. China does not follow western democratic traditions. It does not mind about human rights or ecological and environmental disasters. All what they want is to use Sri Lanka as one of its strategic geopolitical locations. China has been encircling many Asian countries with its mighty economic powers. Unfortunately, Mahinda Rajapaksa had adopted some wrong foreign polices during his two terms in our diplomatic relationship with India and China. Recently, China has been putting many African countries in a debt trap with its mega development projects. Unfortunately, we too became a victim of Chinese geopolitical hegemony.  Unlike many other countries, China uses its diplomatic and political relations to do business with its friendly countries. Knowingly or unknowingly we became a victim of China’s political ploy. It is generally believed that China has played a role in this political chaos in Sri Lanka. Who can challenge China now? who can question China now? For the personal interest of Mahinda family, he put the entire country in hock in the hands of China.

         Unlike in the past, to do politics in this virtual world of information and technological advancement, our politicians too must have some thorough knowledge in geopolitics, diplomacy, rules of law, world order, and other areas of modern world. Sri Lanka badly needs a new generation of politicians to take this beautiful country forward. I’m sorry to say that more than 50% of MPs in our parliament are incompetent politicians to meet the political challenges of 21th century. I suggest some first-class graduates with high level of IQs must enter politics to clean Sri Lankan politics from the grip of these political thugs.

          EFF Unveils Virtual Reality Tool To Help People Spot Surveillance Devices in Their Communities       Cache   Translate Page
Law Enforcement’s Deployment of High-Tech Spying Tools On the Rise

San Francisco—The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) launched a virtual reality (VR) experience on its website today that teaches people how to spot and understand the surveillance technologies police are increasingly using to spy on communities.

“We are living in an age of surveillance, where hard-to-spot cameras capture our faces and our license plates, drones in the sky videotape our streets, and police carry mobile biometric devices to scan people’s fingerprints,” said EFF Senior Investigative Researcher Dave Maass. “We made our ‘Spot the Surveillance’ VR tool to help people recognize these spying technologies around them and understand what their capabilities are."

Spot the Surveillance, which works best with a VR headset but will also work on standard browsers, places users in a 360-degree street scene in San Francisco. In the scene, a young resident is in an encounter with police. Users are challenged to identify surveillance tools by looking around the scene. The experience takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

The surveillance technologies featured in the scene include a body-worn camera, automated license plate readers, a drone, a mobile biometric device, and pan-tilt-zoom cameras. The project draws from years of research gathered by EFF in its Street-Level Surveillance project, which shines a light on how police use, and abuse, technology to spy on communities.

Created by EFF’s engineering and design team, the Stop the Surveillance VR experience can be found at https://eff.org/spot-vr.

“One of our goals at EFF is to experiment with how emerging online technologies can help bring about awareness and change,” said EFF Web Developer Laura Schatzkin, who coded the project. “The issue of ubiquitous police surveillance was a perfect match for virtual reality. We hope that after being immersed in this digital experience users will acquire a new perspective on privacy that will stay with them when they remove the headset and go out into the real world.”

The current version is now being made publicly available for user testing, as part of the Aaron Swartz Day and International Hackathon festivities. EFF will be conducting live demonstrations of the project at the event on Nov. 10-11 at the Internet Archive in San Francisco. Swartz, the brilliant activist and Internet pioneer, was facing a myriad of federal charges for downloading scientific journals when he took his own life in 2013.

EFF seeks user feedback and bug reports, which will be incorporated into an updated version scheduled for release in Spring 2019. The VR project was supported during its development through the XRstudio residency program at Mozilla. The project was also made possible with the support of a 2018 Journalism 360 Challenge grant. Journalism 360 is a global network of storytellers accelerating the understanding and production of immersive journalism. Its founding partners are the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Google News Initiative, and the Online News Association.

          3 Levels of Connectivity K–12 Schools Should Consider      Cache   Translate Page
3 Levels of Connectivity K–12 Schools Should Consider eli.zimmerman_9856 Mon, 11/05/2018 - 11:35

The increasing digitalization of education has put even more emphasis on internet access in K–12 schools, leading more school districts, nonprofits and government agencies to invest in programs and services to ensure each student is connected.

How much speed do you need? It depends on your learning goals, according to EducationSuperHighway.

Here are three different areas of connectivity K–12 IT teams may want to consider when deciding how to configure their schools’ networks:

MORE FROM EDTECH: Check out how K–12 schools are preparing their infrastructures for IoT integration!

1. Individual Classroom Technology Use

Technology has become an integral part of day-to-day classroom activities, used for everything from improving personalized learning initiatives to cutting down on unwanted behavior.

Tools like interactive smartboards are helping teachers engage their students, enticing students to be more actively involved in their education.

“Teachers and students can upload images easily or interact with the display through their personal devices,” the The Tech Edvocate reports. “By integrating personal devices with their interactive board, these companies are creating a way for teachers to combine student-centered methods with their high-tech display.” As connected classrooms become more ubiquitous, schools will need to ensure that individual classes have the necessary bandwidth to incorporate these new tools.

Characterized by bandwidth of 100Kbps per student and one wireless access point per 1.5 classrooms, this level of infrastructure will support media-rich assessments and classroom use — but not for all classrooms at the same time.

2. Everyday 1:1 Technology Use

One-to-one device initiatives have grown exponentially over the past few years. According to a report from K–12 device company Kajeet, the number of mobile devices sold to K–12 schools grew 10 percent year-over-year, with 73 percent of teachers polled agreeing technology has changed classroom dynamics over the past five years for the better.

Students are also using their mobile devices to assist with their education now more than ever. In 2017, the number of students who used their mobile devices for class (58 percent) was nearly equal to the number of students who received a Chromebook from their schools (56 percent), according to ISTE.

With 77 percent of middle schoolers accessing mobile devices during the school day, district IT leaders will need to build an infrastructure that can handle the internet demand from both students and teachers at any time from any place on their campuses. This level calls for bandwidth of 1Mbps per student and 1.2 wireless APs per classroom.

3. Video, Virtual Reality and Other Rich Media Use

Media is proving to be an immensely powerful tool for classroom activities, and one that new generations of learners are demanding be more present in their educations.

Video has proven to be an effective learning tool as well. According to a ViewSonic survey, 75 percent of teachers reported that media improves student engagement, and 72 percent reported that students used video material outside of class to learn on their own.

At the highest level, students engage in technology-enabled learning experiences every day, and video and other rich media are crucial to that.

Teachers are getting behind the movement as well. Eighty-three percent of surveyed educators believe virtual reality can help improve education outcomes, according to a Samsung survey, EdTech reports. As these tools develop and schools explore avenues to integrate this technology, districts will be tasked with establishing infrastructures that can handle the connectivity burden. This calls for bandwidth that exceeds 1Mbps per student.

          Don’t Forget Leah Sharibu! - An Article By Tony Ogunlowo      Cache   Translate Page
On the 19th of February this year, more than a hundred girls were kidnapped from the Government Girls Science and Technology College, Dapchi in Yobe state by a faction of the dreaded Boko Haram. Five weeks later, 105 girls were released, 5 had died in captivity and one girl was held back.

The name of the girl held back is Leah Sharibu, only 14 years old at the time, and her captors refused to release her because she refused to convert to Islam.

Eight months on and she is still being held against her will with her captors threatening to execute her at any time: they have already executed two Red Cross health workers kidnapped earlier this year.

Lai Mohammed, the Minister for Information and Culture, has recently said that the government was doing everything within their power to secure her release: but considering the ongoing Chibok girls saga this can mean virtually nothing substantial is being done. Politicians will always say one thing and do something else – or do nothing at all. Hopefully she won’t be used as a political bargaining tool in the run-up to the 2019 elections.

For such a young girl to put her life on the line for her faith I don’t see any of the so-called ‘Men-of-God’ in Nigeria lining up to fight for her release – or even mention her( Pastor Adeboye only mentioned her briefly in a sermon in March and that was it!). Is this because they are too busy collecting tithes, faking miracles or pocketing backhanders from politicians? Or are they too busy trying to win more souls to their churches (- to pay more tithes!) they can afford to ignore the plight of one deeply religious girl?

By refusing to convert to Islam and facing an uncertain future, Leah has displayed more courage than most people. How many people in her predicament would resist the urge to convert to Islam just to get out of there? ( I know I would! I would convert fast, call myself ‘Mohammed’ and run like a mad-man as soon as they released me!). How many of our so-called ‘Men-of-God’ would be brave enough to hold on to their faith faced with such a predicament? It’s one thing to hold a Bible and preach to a multitude and another thing to be prepared to die for what you believe in.

Recently the kidnappers have issued a demand for N100bn ransom for her release – a ludicrous amount -  and her family are busy running around trying to raise some money to appease her captors. None of our over-paid, under-worked and ‘too-rich’ politicians have stepped in to help. Neither have any of the so-called ‘Men-of-God’ either. It would be good if our pastors, Defenders and Preachers of the Faith, dipped into all the tithes they’ve been collecting from people all these years and find a way to pay her ransom – and help her family financially: it would be the Christian thing to do. Or are they waiting for her to become a martyr so they can use her name to preach?

This poor girl must not be allowed to become another statistic of the murderous Boko Haram campaign !

There are influential politicians out there who can affect her release straight away but they are too busy buying up votes ahead of the impending 2019 elections to do anything. There are top ‘Men-of-God’ out there who have the Presidents’ ear but instead of fighting for her release they are only interested in engaging in  photocalls to further their own popularity .

Something needs to be done.

#FreeLeahSharibu.

How many characters is too many? Ensemble casts can be fun and the interaction between characters can be more interesting than the actual plot of a story! But keeping track of characters from the audience point of view or even from the creator's perspective can be hard when you have a lot. Characters can copy each other and just become bad clones or you can forget what some are meant to be doing and create plot holes, audiences can stop caring about some of them or just become really confused. So how do you keep track? I think breaking them into small groups can be one good way to do it… What are some others?

This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Ray Gun: This one’s a slow burn, like the rise of a distant star over the cold, crater-pocked landscape of a desolate grey moon… This sound is as cool as the environment outside your spacesuit. Blast off and enjoy the view!

I always question the timing of stories and leaks. Who or what is to gain from them. I don't like the mainstream media, nor do I trust them when it comes to unbiased coverage of the CF. Yup, there seems to be a lot wrong in the story, but drunk and stupid isn't a crime. And as time goes by "sexual misconduct" can be virtually anything that a person decides is offensive if it is unwanted. Like anything in life, it is better wait for the full story, and even court testimony, before jumping to any conclusions where the media is concerned.

Ask your agent what the marketing plan to sell your listing is. Set up ground rules - how often you want to be contacted, what you want to know from your agent, what your expectations are. Send it to your agent in writing to discuss and agree upon. This way, you know what to expect from the process. You also know what the time frame is for each part of the process. You may not know, but the agent could have emailed your listing info to his/her database of agents or buyers already, or put it on different internet real estate sites... Main thing: make sure that your house is in great condition, decluttered and staged - ready to be shown. Also - that your marketing program shows your house on as many real estate sites as possible, with lots of visual presentation (the max amount of pictures allowed in your local MLS) and virtual tour. Best of luck! Hope this helps, Irina Karan Beachfront Realty, Inc. IrinaKaran@gmail.com
          Comment on Own Your Religion by Steve Warren      Cache   Translate Page
Excellent article. A Latter-day Saint who believes that the church and its leaders are authorized of God needn’t accept whatever the church puts forth as “gospel.” On the contrary, anyone who wants a better church tomorrow really ought to speak up today. We aren’t potted plants. Let's face it: Malarkey will continue to thrive in the church if members say “amen” to it all. When it comes to the Book of Mormon, however, I believe most of the criticisms cited by Gregory Prince have been adequately addressed by apologists. Some criticisms simply fall into the unresolved category. In my view, those who assert that the Book of Mormon was not translated by the power of God or that it is not a record of an ancient people have at least one virtually insurmountable obstacle; namely, the testimony of the three witnesses. Let us not forget what the three witnesses (and Joseph Smith) testified to: They said an angel appeared to them and showed them the plates and the engravings thereon, that they heard the voice of God, and that the voice confirmed that the plates were an ancient record that had been translated by the power of God. (Additional comments by the witnesses say the angel also showed them such ancient artifacts as the sword of Laban, interpreters and other records, which, along with the plates themselves, underscore the reality of an ancient civilization vs. the notion of the book being merely a well-intended, made-up narrative aimed at promoting faith in God.) The three witnesses had plenty of reasons, time and opportunity to retract their printed and signed testimonies. They never did, not even at gunpoint. Claims by those who have tried to discredit them are surprisingly weak and often border on amusing. Yes, some traditional stories and beliefs about the book are problematic. One of the major problems with certain “traditional” claims about the Book of Mormon is that critics are understandably willing to diminish the book itself because of the false or questionable traditional claims made by church leaders and members. A couple of doubtful but widely accepted traditional claims among believers are that Book of Mormon peoples were extremely numerous and that they originally settled in Central America. I personally believe that they likely numbered only a few million at their peak (most of whom were eventually wiped out) and that they originally settled along the east coast of what is now the United States. I certainly do not believe that Moroni trekked with the plates and other artifacts from Central America to upstate New York. Moreover, Joseph Smith said only that he translated “by the gift and power of God.” He did not call it a “literal” translation, which is noteworthy because anyone who has ever translated from one language to another (me, for example) knows that “literal” is virtually impossible for anything longer than a few words. Also, Joseph did not call it the most “perfect” book; he called it the most “correct” book, a lower standard. I believe that in calling it the most correct book, he intended to compare it only to other books of religion and likely had in mind the correctness of its principles and teachings. And, frankly, if Joseph Smith wrote the book—or, to narrow it down, if he wrote something like Jacob 5—his authorship would have been a much greater miracle than the miracle of translating it by the power of God. I’m certain Emma felt that way.

Abstract
Immune recognition of molecular patterns from microorganisms or self-altered cells activate effector responses that neutralize and eliminate these potentially harmful agents. In virtually every metazoan group the process is carried out by pattern recognition receptors, typically constituted by immunoglobulin (Ig), leucine rich repeat (LRR), and/or lectin domains. In order to get insights into the ancestral immune recognition repertoire of animals, we have sequenced the transcriptome of bacterially challenged colonies of the model cnidarian Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus using the Illumina platform. Over 116,000 assembled contigs were annotated by sequence similarity, domain architecture, and functionally. From these, a subset of 315 unique transcripts was predicted as the putative immune recognition repertoire of H. symbiolongicarpus. Interestingly, canonical Toll-like receptors (TLR) were not predicted, nor any transmembrane protein with the Toll/interleukine-1 receptor (TIR) domain. Yet, a variety of predicted proteins with transmembrane domains associated with LRR ectodomains were identified, as well as homologs of the key transduction factor NF-kB, and its associated regulatory proteins. This also has been documented in Hydra, and suggests that recognition and signaling initiation has been decoupled in the TLR system of hydrozoans. In contrast, both canonical and non-canonical NOD-like receptors were identified in H. symbiolongicarpus, showing a higher diversity than the TLR system and perhaps a wider functional landscape. The collection of Ig-like containing putative immune recognition molecules was diverse, and included at least 26 unique membrane-bound predicted proteins and 88 cytoplasmic/secreted predicted molecules. In addition, 25 and 5 transcripts encoding the Ig-like containing allorecognition determinants ALR1 and ALR2, respectively, were identified. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses suggested the presence of various transcriptionally active alr loci, and the action of recombination-based mechanisms diversifying them. Transcripts encoding at least six lectin families with putative roles in immune recognition were found, including 19 unique C-type lectins and 21 unique rhamnose-binding lectins. Other predicted immune recognition receptors included scavenger receptors from three families, lipopolysaccharide-binding proteins, cell-adhesion molecules and thioester-bond containing proteins. This analysis demonstrated that the putative immune recognition repertoire of H. symbiolongicarpus is large and diverse.

          .NET 4.6.2 Makes WPF For Big Apps Fun Again      Cache   Translate Page

If you have ever tried to create a WPF application which has a larger memory footprint (>500MB) you will notice some random hangs in the UI which become several second hangs for no apparent reason. On a test machine with a decent Xeon CPU I have seen 35s UI hangs because WPF frequently (up to every 850ms) calls GC.Collect(2). The root cause of the problem is that WPF was designed with a business application developer in mind who never gets resource management right. For that reason WPF Bitmaps and other things do not even care to implement the IDisposable interface to clean up resources deterministically. Instead the cleanup is left as an exercise for the Garbage Collector with the Finalizer thread working hand in hand.

That can lead to problems. Suppose a 32 bit application where the user is scrolling through a virtual ListView with many bitmaps inside it. This operation will cause the allocation of many temporary Bitmaps which will quickly become garbage. Because the Bitmaps are small objects on the managed heap but the actual Bitmap data is stored in unmanaged memory the Garbage Collector sees no need to clean things up for a long time. In effect it did happen that your application ran of unmanaged memory long before the Garbage Collector was able to release the bitmaps in the Finalizer. That lead to one of the worst hacks in WPF. It is called MemoryPressure. Lets have a look how it is implemented:

http://referencesource.microsoft.com/#PresentationCore/Core/CSharp/MS/Internal/MemoryPressure.cs
//
// About the thresholds:
// For the inter-allocation threshold 850ms is the longest time between allocations on a high-end
// machine for an image application loading many large (several M pixel) images continuously.
// This falls well below user-interaction time (which is on the order of several seconds) so it
// differentiates nicely between the two
//
// The initial threshold of 1MB is so we don't force GCs when the total amount of unmanaged memory
// isn't a big deal. The point of this code is to stop unmanaged memory from spiraling out of control
// at that point it's typically in the 10s of MBs. This threshold thus could potentially be increased
// but current testing shows it is adequate.
//
// The max time between collections was set to 30 sec because that is a 'long time' - this is
// for the case where allocations (and frees) of images are happening continously without
// pause - we haven't seen scenarios that do this yet so it's possible this threshold could also
// be increased
//
private const int INITIAL_THRESHOLD = 0x100000;          // 1 MB initial threshold
private const int INTER_ALLOCATION_THRESHOLD = 850; // ms allowed between allocations
private const int MAX_TIME_BETWEEN_COLLECTIONS = 30000; // ms between collections
/// <summary>
/// Check the timers and decide if enough time has elapsed to
/// force a collection
/// </summary>
private static void ProcessAdd()
{
    bool shouldCollect = false;

    if (_totalMemory >= INITIAL_THRESHOLD)
    {
        //
        // need to synchronize access to the timers, both for the integrity
        // of the elapsed time and to ensure they are reset and started
        // properly
        //
        lock (lockObj)
        {
            //
            // if it's been long enough since the last allocation
            // or too long since the last forced collection, collect
            //
            if (_allocationTimer.ElapsedMilliseconds >= INTER_ALLOCATION_THRESHOLD
                || (_collectionTimer.ElapsedMilliseconds > MAX_TIME_BETWEEN_COLLECTIONS))
            {
                _collectionTimer.Reset();
                _collectionTimer.Start();

                shouldCollect = true;
            }
            _allocationTimer.Reset();
            _allocationTimer.Start();
        }

        //
        // now that we're out of the lock do the collection
        //
        if (shouldCollect)
        {
            Collect();
        }
    }

    return;
}

/// <summary>
/// Forces a collection.
/// </summary>
private static void Collect()
{
    //
    // for now only force Gen 2 GCs to ensure we clean up memory
    // These will be forced infrequently and the memory we're tracking
    // is very long lived so it's ok
    //
    GC.Collect(2);
}

This beauty is calling GC.Collect(2) every 850ms if in between no Bitmap was allocated or every 30s regardless of how many Bitmaps were allocated. With .NET 4.5 we have got concurrent garbage collection which dramatically reduces blocking all application threads while a garbage collection is happening. For common application workloads a "normal" .NET application gets 10-15% faster by doing no change to the code. These improvements are all nullified by calling a forceful full blocking garbage collection.

To demonstrate the effect I have created a simple test application which allocates on a background thread 1 GB of small objects while on the UI thread we allocate one WPF bitmap every 850ms and compare that to allocating an "old" WinForms Bitmap object also every 850ms.

// WPF allocation
BitmapFrame img = null;
while (true)
{
    myBitmapStream2.Position = 0;
    img = BitmapFrame.Create(myBitmapStream2); // WPF Bitmaps have no Dispose method!
    Thread.Sleep(850);
    if (backgroundAllocation.IsCompleted)
    {
        break;
    }
}

// Winforms Bitmap allocation
Bitmap img = null;
while (true)
{
    myBitmapStream2.Position = 0;
    img = new Bitmap(myBitmapStream2);
    Thread.Sleep(850);
    if (backgroundAllocation.IsCompleted)
    {
        break;
    }
    img.Dispose();
}

If you measure for some heap sizes you quickly see that your application will become dramatically slower the more memory it consumes due to the forced blocking garbage collection caused by WPF. The x-axis shows the managed heap size in MB and the y-axis shows the time needed to allocate 1 GB of small objects in a background thread.

You have a multi GB WPF application and the user experience is just awful and slow? You can google for good answers on Stackoverflow
