EFF Unveils Virtual Reality Tool To Help People Spot Surveillance Devices in Their Communities       Cache   Translate Page
Law Enforcement’s Deployment of High-Tech Spying Tools On the Rise

San Francisco—The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) launched a virtual reality (VR) experience on its website today that teaches people how to spot and understand the surveillance technologies police are increasingly using to spy on communities.

“We are living in an age of surveillance, where hard-to-spot cameras capture our faces and our license plates, drones in the sky videotape our streets, and police carry mobile biometric devices to scan people’s fingerprints,” said EFF Senior Investigative Researcher Dave Maass. “We made our ‘Spot the Surveillance’ VR tool to help people recognize these spying technologies around them and understand what their capabilities are."

Spot the Surveillance, which works best with a VR headset but will also work on standard browsers, places users in a 360-degree street scene in San Francisco. In the scene, a young resident is in an encounter with police. Users are challenged to identify surveillance tools by looking around the scene. The experience takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

The surveillance technologies featured in the scene include a body-worn camera, automated license plate readers, a drone, a mobile biometric device, and pan-tilt-zoom cameras. The project draws from years of research gathered by EFF in its Street-Level Surveillance project, which shines a light on how police use, and abuse, technology to spy on communities.

Created by EFF’s engineering and design team, the Stop the Surveillance VR experience can be found at https://eff.org/spot-vr.

“One of our goals at EFF is to experiment with how emerging online technologies can help bring about awareness and change,” said EFF Web Developer Laura Schatzkin, who coded the project. “The issue of ubiquitous police surveillance was a perfect match for virtual reality. We hope that after being immersed in this digital experience users will acquire a new perspective on privacy that will stay with them when they remove the headset and go out into the real world.”

The current version is now being made publicly available for user testing, as part of the Aaron Swartz Day and International Hackathon festivities. EFF will be conducting live demonstrations of the project at the event on Nov. 10-11 at the Internet Archive in San Francisco. Swartz, the brilliant activist and Internet pioneer, was facing a myriad of federal charges for downloading scientific journals when he took his own life in 2013.

EFF seeks user feedback and bug reports, which will be incorporated into an updated version scheduled for release in Spring 2019. The VR project was supported during its development through the XRstudio residency program at Mozilla. The project was also made possible with the support of a 2018 Journalism 360 Challenge grant. Journalism 360 is a global network of storytellers accelerating the understanding and production of immersive journalism. Its founding partners are the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Google News Initiative, and the Online News Association.

3 Levels of Connectivity K–12 Schools Should Consider      Cache   Translate Page
3 Levels of Connectivity K–12 Schools Should Consider eli.zimmerman_9856 Mon, 11/05/2018 - 11:35

The increasing digitalization of education has put even more emphasis on internet access in K–12 schools, leading more school districts, nonprofits and government agencies to invest in programs and services to ensure each student is connected.

How much speed do you need? It depends on your learning goals, according to EducationSuperHighway.

Here are three different areas of connectivity K–12 IT teams may want to consider when deciding how to configure their schools’ networks:

MORE FROM EDTECH: Check out how K–12 schools are preparing their infrastructures for IoT integration!

1. Individual Classroom Technology Use

Technology has become an integral part of day-to-day classroom activities, used for everything from improving personalized learning initiatives to cutting down on unwanted behavior.

Tools like interactive smartboards are helping teachers engage their students, enticing students to be more actively involved in their education.

“Teachers and students can upload images easily or interact with the display through their personal devices,” the The Tech Edvocate reports. “By integrating personal devices with their interactive board, these companies are creating a way for teachers to combine student-centered methods with their high-tech display.” As connected classrooms become more ubiquitous, schools will need to ensure that individual classes have the necessary bandwidth to incorporate these new tools.

Characterized by bandwidth of 100Kbps per student and one wireless access point per 1.5 classrooms, this level of infrastructure will support media-rich assessments and classroom use — but not for all classrooms at the same time.

2. Everyday 1:1 Technology Use

One-to-one device initiatives have grown exponentially over the past few years. According to a report from K–12 device company Kajeet, the number of mobile devices sold to K–12 schools grew 10 percent year-over-year, with 73 percent of teachers polled agreeing technology has changed classroom dynamics over the past five years for the better.

Students are also using their mobile devices to assist with their education now more than ever. In 2017, the number of students who used their mobile devices for class (58 percent) was nearly equal to the number of students who received a Chromebook from their schools (56 percent), according to ISTE.

With 77 percent of middle schoolers accessing mobile devices during the school day, district IT leaders will need to build an infrastructure that can handle the internet demand from both students and teachers at any time from any place on their campuses. This level calls for bandwidth of 1Mbps per student and 1.2 wireless APs per classroom.

3. Video, Virtual Reality and Other Rich Media Use

Media is proving to be an immensely powerful tool for classroom activities, and one that new generations of learners are demanding be more present in their educations.

Video has proven to be an effective learning tool as well. According to a ViewSonic survey, 75 percent of teachers reported that media improves student engagement, and 72 percent reported that students used video material outside of class to learn on their own.

At the highest level, students engage in technology-enabled learning experiences every day, and video and other rich media are crucial to that.

Teachers are getting behind the movement as well. Eighty-three percent of surveyed educators believe virtual reality can help improve education outcomes, according to a Samsung survey, EdTech reports. As these tools develop and schools explore avenues to integrate this technology, districts will be tasked with establishing infrastructures that can handle the connectivity burden. This calls for bandwidth that exceeds 1Mbps per student.

Day 169: A true origin of my sadness exposed      Cache   Translate Page
It has been around 20 years since I started the journey of self-discovery and over 8 years since I have been walking the process of self-perfection by writing blogs and recording vlogs. However, during this process, I have not felt the increase in my awareness in relation to what I have accepted and allowed to become. Meaning during the process I did look at the past events where I have abdicated my self-responsibility and committed to correct myself. However, I have until recently not felt such shame as I am feeling now. Also in past decades, I felt some sort of undefined sadness that has been noticeable from my facial expression in form of dark baggy eyes. Until recently I assumed that the sadness was about all the traumatic events that I have experienced in my past. However, I see now that what I am actually sad about is what I have allowed and accepted in my life. As far I can remember, I have defined myself as a good person that does not want to harm anybody and that all that happened to me had nothing to do with who I am. I claimed that I am an innocent victim and punished by life for no reason. Boy oh boy was I wrong!

I see my childhood as quite pleasant, with memories of just a couple of unpleasant events. Now the problem with the memories is how we tend to remember mostly bad things and disregard all the good stuff. And it was exactly the same with me. All the abundance, safety, and love that my parent provided I just took for granted. That is what made me turn into a spoiled brat. I understand that my over-protective environment played a role in that but boy it took a long time for me to understand how much spoiled I have become. I and my brother lived for many years in a safe family bubble where were provided by our father with the latest gadgetry. Computers and television then contributed for me to sink into an even more deceptive bubble of virtual reality where I have played god and attacked other from. All the images, especially porn, created layers of energetic addictions. Thus whenever I faced challenges, instead of facing and understanding them, I took refuge in the alternative worlds of emotional and orgasmic experiences. That took me in such separation of life that I am just slowly becoming aware of the real depth of my demise.

Now that I am experiencing some kind of quantum leap in my awareness, I am having a great challenge in deciding what to do. I do not want to be the self-centered spoiled kid anymore, however, I see that such tendencies are still a part of me and it will still take time for me to transform my behavior patterns and energetic addictions. I feel like a heavy train that has been driving towards the cliff with full speed. I have become aware of the cliff and have hit the brakes, however, it will take the train some time to stop completely due to inertia.

I see for example how a photography at first glance is an innocent art that started to become my passion already at my young age. However, one perspective using photography is to manifest points of separation. When looking through the viewfinder, a photographer positions himself on 'the other side of the lens' where all that matters is a framed composition of visual elements in a moment. A photographer does not need to care about what events lead to the current state of reality and what will be the outflow of events in the future. The trapped moment of time is then observed over and over again in form of a photo and in many cases, a deep emotional bond is created to that picture. A photo is an attempt to stop the time and create an experience of eternity. Generally when taking a photo one does not ask or needs to ask for a permission to take a snapshot. So it is also much like stealing something from someone. And also within such stealing, one is being very careful to compose all the shapes and colors with the starting point to entice as strong emotional reaction from the observers of the photo as possible. Sure photography can also function as evidence of past events however generally it functions as an attempt to control something or to gain something.

A camera has played a role of the protective shield also in my life for many years. I have been hiding behind the lens and also behind a TV and computer screen for too long. For so long that I have lost the interest in doing much of the physical work. Because using computer things move much faster and the physical reality takes much more time to manifest. This is why I have also become impatient and restless, constantly needing some pictures, sounds, and information to fill my mind and keep me entertained. For physical labor, I defined myself as someone who is overqualified and would waste my potentials if I engage in some kind of job that does not require a lot of intellectual skills. Consequently, I am keeping myself trapped in computer-related jobs that create a strain on my physical body due to long periods of keeping myself in a sitting position. Sadly it is also the money that influences my business decisions since most of the highest paid jobs are now also related to using computers. On the other hand, the information age is also connecting us again, thought externally, but is enabling us a reflection of what is going on in our minds and serves as a beneficial projection of our internal reality. So the key is to make the best of all this mess and to figure out how to create a future where we would not be enslaved and separate anymore by our own creation.

What I am also dealing with here is a chicken and egg situation. I am quite satisfied with being single and do not have a need to be in a relationship with someone to be happy. So I am asking myself if this is something that is the true nature of my being or a consequence of my upbringing. I see how much I am like my father and have wondered how much of what I am are personalities that I have copied from him as a child. Or it could be just that my father and I have similar nature of our beingnesses that both like to work alone and would not change much regardless of the environment. Well, all that I can do is to continue my process of identifying the points of separation within me and to move towards creating the future based on the principle of what is best for all. It is up to me to challenge and expand myself but to be at the same time careful not to overwhelm myself.
I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed my life to be directed mostly by the energies of good emotions and bad feelings instead of directing myself as life as one and equal. I commit myself to stop all the energy addictions and to direct myself based on the principle of what is best for all.
I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to see other being only as their picture manifestation. And then also comparing them to ideals of perfection and judging any visual imperfection instead of treating them as one and equal as who I am as life. I realize that everything that I am able to observe with my human physical eyes is much more than I am able to see and understand that we are all an equal part of this existence. Thus I commit myself to when and as I am looking at someone and my mind is producing thoughts like: Look at this and that imperfection on their face and their body and how they dress! to stop and breathe. I then place myself into the body of the person that I observe and understand how my life would be if I would be in their body and to have their life experience.
I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to observe women mostly from the perspective of how a sexual experience with them would be. I realize that I have been conditioned by years of watching porn where I have started to associate the appearance of a woman with experience of orgasm. Thus I commit myself to when and as I want to experience a physical orgasm and my mind is producing thoughts like: Look at some woman or a picture of a woman or imagine a woman during masturbation since you will experience the energy of orgasm quicker! to stop and breathe. I commit myself to practice masturbation only as an act of my physical body self-expression within the realization that I do not need to imagine anything let alone having to include any other body to experience an orgasm.
I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to when and as I interact with others for my actions to have the starting point of wanting to impress others in order for them to admire me and then to feel good about myself. I realize how self-centered my interactions with others have been since I mostly wanted to impress others using advance knowledge and information and also other skills that I have gathered. Thus I commit myself to when and as I interact with other and my mind is producing thought like: Just think what great information will you tell them in order to impress them and prove that you know more than they do! to stop and breathe. I then communicate with others from the starting point of equality, share the information that is relevant to them or ask them questions in order to find out how they feel and if there is anything that I can assist them with.
I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to define myself as a perfectionist and to become angry about myself every single time when I notice some imperfection about myself. I realize that tendency towards the perfection is a projection of not accepting myself as who I am as my physical body, mind and the being that all have its limitations and do change over time. Thus I commit myself to when and as I see something about myself and my mind is producing thoughts like: You should have done or looked like this instead of that! to stop and breathe. I then within the realization that everything is changing and that nothing will ever fit the complete criteria of someone's imagination do my best to strive towards my goals but also fully accept how I am and how I perform at this very moment.
I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to compare myself and compete with others where I wanted to prove that I know much more than others and can do things better than others for the sake of feeling good. I realize that self-perfection is supportive however we all have different preconditions, different environments, different bodies, different minds, different beings and can not perfect self by comparing ourselves to others. Thus I commit myself to when and as I observe others and my mind is producing thoughts like: Look at this guy or girl and what they have achieved! to stop and breathe. I then consider only my original and current state of everything that I currently am an have achieved and continue to perfect self in relation only to my own life path.
I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to when and as I observe others how they struggle and experience discomfort and pain to feel good about myself. I realize that any energetic movement within myself when observing others how they suffer is a manifestation of pure evil and separation. Thus I commit myself to when and as I see others in a problematic situation and my mind is producing thoughts like: Look how funny they are when they suffer! to stop and breathe. I then immediately place myself in the position of the individual that I observe and understand that I could equally be in the same position as they are. I then also see what I can do to diminish the suffering that others endure since we are all in this together.

Are You Ready for the Factory of the Future?      Cache   Translate Page

There’s a lot of data tied up in medical device manufacturing processes—but it’s been challenging to capture and process this information from historically independent and disjointed machines and processes, say experts. In addition, skilled operators with a deep understanding of such processes have often served as the keepers of the knowledge.

Connecting those processes and machines so that they can communicate with each other and then collecting and analyzing the data from those processes could yield several benefits. Such connected, highly automated environments—often called smart factories, smart or advanced manufacturing, or Industry 4.0—offer opportunities for process improvements, improved quality, reduced costs, faster fulfillment, and more, said experts at The Medtech Conference by AdvaMed. Speakers explored how medical device manufacturing could be transformed through smart manufacturing in the panel discussion, “International Perspectives on Industry 4.0 and the Medtech Factory of the Future.” Moderated by Seamus Carroll, vice president, medical technologies division, IDA Ireland, the panel included Vivian Farrell, CEO of Modular Automation; Dan Grant, CEO of MTP Connect, based in Australia; Colm Hynes, director of engineering, science, and technology, joint reconstruction, DePuy Synthes, Johnson & Johnson; and Toby Sainsbury, technologist, industrial technologies group, IDA Ireland.

“Once you begin to connect devices, you gain the ability to predict what will happen,” Hynes told the audience. “You can continuously learn as time goes on. You can find patterns and see how the process behaves. You can reduce the cost of quality, and asset utilization goes up.”

It is possible to “connect all the different elements from order entry to component delivery,” added Hynes.

Smart factories “leverage the latest automation technologies to optimize the manufacturing process," Farrell later told MD+DI. "This often results in industrial robots interacting with people to get the task done."

Modular Automation has worked closely with J&J to implement such an approach. “It is very much a partnership—our team working hand in hand with Colin’s team. We’ve shared information and learned from each other, all raising the bar to identify better solutions,” said Farrell. “We allow the flow of data from machines to a central location to be analyzed and identify trends. The goal is to make medical devices faster and safer and more aligned with patient needs, and we all manage risks as we go forward.”

“There’s more productivity in how you produce products and get to patients,” added Hynes. “We build in batches, and [Industry 4.0] allows us to be a single-batch production and reduce inventory.” Such an approach allows manufacturers to produce personalized, patient-specific products, he added. “Speed, agility, etc. are achieved by adoption of information to create improved landscape in manufacturing.”

There’s a “need to arrive at solutions quickly,” added Farrell. She offered the example of high-speed contact lens manufacturing. “To double the output with half the footprint, you can’t achieve that with old thinking. You need to identify new ways to work. [It involves] machines and people working together to deliver products quicker and safer, while reducing waste and improving overall quality.”

Sainsbury told the audience that companies can “derisk in research and development innovation centers in a collaborative environment.” IDA Ireland works to support such exploration while remaining technology agnostic, he said.

Grant said that Australia recognized the importance of Industry 4.0 in 2016 and set up a task force. “We recognized the need to ensure appropriate standards,” he said. “We developed test labs at universities and research labs with links to industry.”

Companies need to evolve, too. “We as an organization have been fortunate enough to create an operations technology group to develop and test and learn. It is important to have the processes and structure to be able to do so,” said Hynes. “Otherwise, it is difficult in a regulated environment. You need the appropriate control system and software that can be validated and managed.”

Companies are also facing the challenge of adding new technologies in a regulated environment, such as augmented or virtual reality, said Farrell. She advises adopting technologies in “bite-sized chunks in a way that is proven safe and mitigates the risk.”

Another key challenge of this evolving manufacturing environment is “developing the workforce of the future,” said Farrell, namely the “makeup of teams and skills needed for the future.”

Sainsbury said the educational system in Ireland is responding. “Universities are offering programs in AI, cybersecurity, autonomous vehicles, and cloud computing,” he said. “As a state we have created funding, fellowships, feasibility studies, and full R&D programs.”

He added that he’s seeing “convergence of biopharma and medical with software, IT, and cybersecurity. Skills around data analytics, but data is one thing. We need security to protect the flow in and out of the data.” Cybersecurity is important for the industry as medtech becomes more mobile and consumerized, he added.

When asked what skills are being sought, Hynes said that “requirements have moved from data scientists” and more toward skills that center around getting the data and “transforming it for decision making.” He said that companies are looking for “curious, determined, adventurous people. . . . We need to allow people to test and learn and fail fast. The industry needs to be conservative from a production and manufacturing perspective but also be adventurous in a separate entity to be able to source an idea, develop a proof of concept, test it, and dump it or keep it. Such a ‘safe environment’ generates huge value. Creating that structure is the biggest step forward.”

Grant added that “STEM is shifting to STEAM so we have the arts in there, for commercialization skills and entrepreneurial skills.”

Seamus asked the panel whether robotics would have an effect on jobs.

“There is a big concern about job loss, but there will be job creation,” Grant said. He offered the example of autonomous dump trucks moving ore in mines. “Dump truck drivers lost jobs, but jobs were created in a call center.”

Grant acknowledged that “less skilled workers will struggle to retrain and redeploy themselves. But the jobs of the future don’t even exist today. Universities need to be more thoughtful in creating programs that support the jobs of the future.”

Carroll summed up the discussion this way: “Industry 4.0 is happening rapidly and is not just a fad—it is a real event. There are tremendous implications for companies and for the skills that people will need to have. In countries like Ireland, for example, there is a lot of practical and financial support, and they’re not alone—there are world-class companies to help them execute."

Rude Audio - Rumble on Arab St

London electronic music outfit Rude Audio have announced 'Rumble on Arab St' as the final single off their new 'Rude Redux' EP, accompanied by a video created by Robert Bell.

This new release sees the band refine their trademark sound, fusing their love of woozy dub with throbbing electronics. Here, house music, flecked with Arab and Indian vibes, also shamelessly cavorts with dub. These five tracks go down easy and brings you into sci-fi trance mode.

Ahead of this release, Rude Audio previewed 'To The Sun', complete with a new virtual reality-inspired video, directed by Ali Ingle, as well as 'To The Half Moon', for which Robert Bell also created the video.

Earlier Andrew Weatherall, premiered several tracks from the new EP on his radio show. This EP appeal to fans of Weatherall himself, as well as The Orb, Future Sound of London, Duncan Gray, Adrian Sherwood, On-U-Sound, Hot Chip, and Jagwar Ma.

Based in South London, Rude Audio is a collective with a history of putting on fantastic underground parties, releasing the occasional dubby Balearic opus, engineering for the disparate likes of Paul Weller, Lemon Jelly and Royal Blood and generally mooching about anywhere that doesn’t have bouncers or operate a dress code. WEBSITE.

We shared 'To The Sun' from the 'Rude Redux' E.P. back in August and commented at the time "If dub or electronic music in any shape or size is of interest to you, then dive head first into Rude Audio's music, your in for a very pleasant musical journey". 'Rumble on Arab St' the final single from the collection, I would suggest confirms that our comments regarding Rude Audio's music were reasonable to say the least.

Buffalo Tom - Overtime.

Ahead of their forthcoming European tour, which starts in Copenhagen on 27 November, Buffalo Tom share the new video for "Overtime", a song that appeared on their recent album Quiet and Peace, out now on Schoolkids Records.

The video was directed by Rachel Lichtman from Network77.com (an absurdist music-and-comedy sketch web series). It was edited by drummer Tom Maginnis' daughter Marlena.

Singer-guitarist Bill Janovitz explains more about the video: "The idea came from the song lyric. Rachel wanted to depict a real woman at various points in her life, from childhood into motherhood. She had some of her own Super 8 footage of her mom Susan. When Rachel loaded it with the music, it just seemed to synch up perfectly. There was this footage of her mom from childhood to motherhood, all Super 8, which has to be a fairly rare case for someone of that generation.

So it is all real vintage footage of one person's pivot points, from young childhood to young adulthood. Also Tom’s daughter Marlena Maginnis edited the video, so its all in the family!"

Quiet and Peace is a compelling 11-song set that finds the trio—singer-guitarist Bill Janovitz, bassist-vocalist Chris Colbourn and drummer Tom Maginnis—simultaneously mining their best-known sonic elements while breaking new ground on emotionally resonant new tunes such as "All Be Gone," "Roman Cars," "Freckles" and "CatVMouse."  Buffalo Tom's first collection since 2011's Skins, Quiet and Peace was mixed by John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth, The Hold Steady) and marks the band's first collaboration with producer and fellow Boston alt-rock legend David Minehan, renowned ex-leader of the Neighborhoods. WEBSITE.

European Tour Dates:
Tue 27 Nov - Copenhagen, DK - Pumpehuset
Thu 29 Nov - Berlin, DE - Bi Nuu
Sun 2 Dec - Amsterdam, NL - Paradiso
Tue 4 Dec - Bristol, UK - Fleece
Wed 5 Dec - London, UK - Electric Ballroom
Thu 6 Dec - Birmingham, UK - Institute 2
Sat 8 Dec - Eindhoven, HOLLAND - Come as You Are Effenaar

'Overtime' typifies the sheer quality of Buffalo Tom's music, in this case as Americana and Alt Rock seemingly merge together beautifully. The video makes for a fine companion.

What are the parallels between South Lake Union and Crystal City? And why might the latter be even more attractive to Amazon?

TGM 359 – Novembre 2018      Cache   Translate Page
Al solito, trovate The Games Machine nelle edicole o in varie versioni digitali.    Clicca qui per il sommario e per ordinare il nuovo TGM! Scarica questa pagina in formato PDF

India: BSNL - WiFi Today, 5G in 2020      Cache   Translate Page

India is speeding ahead in a digital super-highway. The draft National Digital Communication Policy (NDCP) 2018 states following 2022 Goals:
a. Provide Universal broadband coverage at 50 Mbps to every citizen
b. Provide 1 Gbps connectivity to all Gram Panchayats of India by 2020 and 10 Gbps by 2022
c. Enable 100 Mbps broadband on demand to all key development institutions; including all educational institutions
d. Enable fixed line broadband access to 50% of households
e. Achieve ‘unique mobile subscriber density’ of 55 by 2020 and 65 by 2022
f. Enable deployment of public Wi-Fi Hotspots; to reach 5 million by 2020 and 10 million by 2022
g. Ensure connectivity to all uncovered areas

Digital India is already transforming the lives of 1.3 billion people. There is growth in e-governance, there is some progress towards cashless society, smart cities are growing and 'Made in India' smartphones are growing

With a view to narrow the digital infrastructure gap with the developed economies, the government is looking at establishing a ‘National Broadband Mission – Rashtriya Broadband Abhiyan’ to secure universal broadband access. The Draft NDCP 2018 has the following clauses:

(a) Implementation of the following broadband initiatives, to be funded through USOF and Public Private Partnerships:  i. BharatNet – Providing 1 Gbps to Gram Panchayats upgradeable to 10 Gbps  ii. GramNet – Connecting all key rural development institutions with 10 Mbps upgradeable to 100 Mbps  iii. NagarNet – Establishing 1 Million public Wi-Fi Hotspots in urban areas  iv. JanWiFi – Establishing 2 Million Wi-Fi Hotspots in rural areas
(b) Implementing a ‘Fibre First Initiative’ to take fibre to the home, to enterprises and to key development institutions in Tier I, II and III towns and to rural clusters:  i. According Telecom Optic Fibre cables the status of Public utility  ii. Promoting collaboration models involving state, local bodies and private sector as necessary for provision of shared duct infrastructure in municipalities, rural areas and national highways  iii. Facilitating Fibre-to-the-tower programme to enable fiberisation of at least 60% base stations thereby accelerating migration to 4G/5G  iv. Leveraging existing assets of the broadcasting and power sector to improve connectivity, affordability and sustainability  v. Incentivising and promoting fibre connectivity for all new developmental construction  vi. By making requirement for telecom installations and the associated cabling and in-building solutions mandatory in in all commercial, residential and office spaces by amending National Building Code of India (NBC), through Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
(d) Facilitate the establishment of Mobile Tower Infrastructure by:  i. Extending incentives and exemptions for the construction of telecom towers  ii. According accelerated Rights of Way permissions for telecom towers in government premises  iii. Promoting deployment of solar and green energy for telecom towers
(e) Improve international connectivity and reduce the cost of international bandwidth by facilitating setting up of International Cable Landing Stations by rationalising access charges and removing regulatory hurdles  i. Encourage sharing of active infrastructure by enhancing the scope of Infrastructure Providers (IP) and promoting deployment of common sharable, passive as well as active, infrastructure;
There are other clauses related to spectrum that we would not discuss here
State owned Indian telecom corporation Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) announced in March of this year that they had deployed 18,000 hotspots around the country and planned to deploy a total of 1,00,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across India by the end of 2018.

On that day BSNL, in partnership with QuadGen,  launched free wi-fi services at Udwada village, Valsad district in Gujarat. The village has been adopted by Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister Smriti Irani under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana.

Speaking on the occasion, Irani - who is also Minister for Textiles - said,

"With the launch of wi-fi service today in Udwada village, population of 6,000 in the village, as well as its surrounding areas will be benefited. People in Udwada and surrounding areas will be able to use unlimited internet data and Udwada village has become digital village".

The hotspots cover nearly 90 per cent of the village and will service multiple concurrent users at any point of time.

Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha hoped this service as part of the Digital India programme will fuel the availability of affordable data and voice services in the country. He asserted:

"The Digital India movement has ensured that the country has the cheapest data and voice services in the world. Today, India uses more data than the US and China, combined."

More recently  BSNL has entered into a deal with Japan’s Softbank and NTT Communications to rollout 5G and internet of things (IoT) technology in India.

“We have signed an agreement with Softbank and NTT Communications to roll out 5G and IoT products and services in India. Under the agreement, we will look at solution specially for the smart cities,”

Stated BSNL chairman and managing director Anupam Shrivastava in an interview.
He said most of the BSNL competitors are still looking at monetising their 4G services and hence leading companies have started looking at the State-run firm for 5G services roll out. According to Mr Shrivastava:

“We have benefited by lead taken by our minister (Manoj Sinha). He has held various meetings at global level on 5G. We capitalised on those opportunities and signed agreement for the next generation technology. 3G was launched in India after seven years the technology was available in other foreign markets and 4G services after four years’ lag but 5G will be launched in India in 2020 as soon the standards are freezed by ITU."

Telecom minister Mr. Sinha has said that 5G service launch in India will happen at par with other leading nations.

Mr Shrivastava insists BSNL is working to finalise test cases where 5G can be used in India:
“We are in advance stages of starting 5G field trials. Government is in agreement to provide us 5G spectrum for trials. We expect to start field trials very soon,”

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has recommended the auction of about 8,644 MHz of telecom frequencies at an estimated base price of ₹ 4.9 lakh crore. The government is yet to finalise details of allocation of spectrum for 5G services.

Under the agreement with Softbank, BSNL will look at collaborating with the Japanese firm for its satellite constellation which will have around 900 satellites to provide high speed internet services across the globe.

BSNL has signed an agreement with Nokia and Cisco as well for developing 5G ecosystem.

BSNL has also and Swedish telecommunication gear maker Ericsson have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) over 5G and Internet of Things. The two will create a joint roadmap for the development of 5G and IoT in India, a joint statement to the media said. This new partnership with see BSNL and Ericsson develop “5G use cases, knowledge sharing on 5G technology concepts, industry and innovation trends including 3GPP standardisation progress.”

Meanwhile a week ago Nokia announced that it will supply, install, commission and maintain the Smart Telecom Poles across India in all of BSNL's telecom circles.

Under the contract, Nokia will also integrate the poles with smart LED lighting systems, CCTV cameras, digital billboards and environmental sensors that provide strong revenue generation potential for the operator.
The smart pole has been designed for emerging markets and built in India based on Nokia's global services expertise. With its Smart Telecom Pole and services expertise, Nokia will help BSNL provide access to mobile connectivity and smart solutions for citizens while ensuring the poles meet the aesthetic and spatial needs in modern cities. Nokia will optimize the telecom infrastructure to provide a shared, secure and scalable platform that ensures the best use of urban resources and prepares BSNL for the needs of new technologies such as IoT and 5G. The pole can be adapted to diverse geographical environments and climate conditions. It also houses a custom-designed power backup solution to provide continuity of services during power outages.

No doubt with these ambitious deals and plans BSNL is very much competing with Reliance Jio and not taking the roll out of Jio GigaFiber lightly and is doing its bit to maintain its market share in the fiber to the home (FTTH) segment.

BSNL Broadband has apparently once more revised its FTTH broadband plans to now offer more data and faster broadband speeds. BSNL Broadband is offering up to 100Mbps speeds till 750GB, and up to 2 Mbps speed beyond that limit at Rs 1277 monthly and Rs 14,047 annual charges. This facility is available for all users in all circles.

Jio GigaFiber is offering 100Mbps speeds as well but for free for a period of three months at a onetime security deposit fee of Rs 4500.

BSNL Broadband too is taking no charges for activation and installation, but users are required to pay onetime security deposit fee of Rs 500 and ONT along with ADSL WiFi Modem charges come at Rs 200 rental per month and security deposit charges (refundable) of Rs 1500.

BSNL Broadband also recently announced an exciting offer for the Chennai circle. BSNL Broadband plans priced at Rs. 999, Rs. 1,299, Rs. 1,699, Rs. 1,999, Rs. 2,999, and Rs. 4,999, have reportedly been revised and upgraded to offer more benefits with speeds of up to 100Mbps and high speed data limits of up to 3.5TB, refreshed on a monthly basis, according to a report on NDTV.

However, what may give Jio GigaFiber the edge is the fact that they are offering a ‘connected home’, which means that Jio GigaFiber router will be able to connect with the Jio DTH and Reliance Jio enabled smartphones, thus converting a house into a smart home. Reliance Jio is also expected to offer all this at prices as low as Rs 500 per month.

Ultra HD entertainment, multi-party video conferencing, virtual reality gaming, shopping and smart home solutions at an affordable price is what is being offered by Jio GigaFiber. So, how existing broadband players adapt to this challenge can be seen after the commercial rollout of Jio GigaFiber.

Effects of Fruit and Vegetable Feeding Messages on Mothers and Fathers: Interactions Between Emotional State and Health Message Framing.

Ann Behav Med. 2018 Nov 03;:

Authors: Persky S, Ferrer RA, Klein WMP, Goldring MR, Cohen RW, Kistler WD, Yaremych HE, Bouhlal S

Abstract
Background : There is a pressing need to craft optimal public health messages promoting healthy feeding behaviors among parents. How these messages influence such feeding decisions are affected by multiple interactive factors including emotional states, message framing, and gender, but these factors have not been studied in the domain of parents' feeding of their children.
Purpose: To evaluate the role of message framing, emotional state, and parent gender on feeding choices that parents make for their children.
Methods: In 2016-2017, 190 parents (126 mothers) of 4- to 7-year-old children were randomly assigned to an anger or fear emotion induction and read either a gain- or loss-framed message about the importance of children's fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption prior to choosing foods for their child from a virtual reality buffet.
Results: Mothers in an angry state who received a gain-framed message chose relatively more FV for their child in the virtual buffet, F(3, 180) = 4.77, p = .027. However, fathers in this group did not feed more FV, but rather reported greater intention to improve future FV feeding, F(3, 180) = 4.91, p = .028.
Conclusions: Providing gain-framed messages to parents, particularly mothers, in an anger state may be most effective for motivating healthy dietary choices for children.

Wronger than wrong: Graded mapping of the errors of an avatar in the performance monitoring system of the onlooker.

Neuroimage. 2018 02 15;167:1-10

Authors: Spinelli G, Tieri G, Pavone EF, Aglioti SM

Abstract
EEG studies show that observing errors in one's own or others' actions triggers specific electro-cortical signatures in the onlooker's brain, but whether the brain error-monitoring system operates according to graded or discrete rules is still largely unknown. To explore this issue, we combined immersive virtual reality with EEG recording in participants who observed an avatar reaching-to-grasp a glass from a first-person perspective. The avatar could perform correct or erroneous actions. Erroneous grasps were defined as small or large depending on the magnitude of the trajectory deviation from the to-be-grasped glass. Results show that electro-cortical indices of error detection (indexed by ERN and mid-frontal theta oscillations), but not those of error awareness (indexed by error-Positivity), were gradually modulated by the magnitude of the observed errors. Moreover, the phase connectivity analysis revealed that enhancement of mid-frontal theta phase synchronization paralleled the magnitude of the observed error. Thus, theta oscillations represent an electro-cortical index of the degree of control exerted by mid-frontal regions whose activation depends on how much an observed action outcome results maladaptive for the onlooker. Our study provides novel neurophysiological evidence that the error monitoring system maps observed errors of different magnitude according to fine-grain, graded rather than all-or-none rules.

The fabulous, incomparable, brilliant, loving, talented and hilarious Julie Hyzy--and even those words aren't enough--is tackling technology in her amazing groundbreaking new thriller, VIRTAL SABOTAGE. Yes, that Julie Hyzy. The New York Times Best-selling Anthony-winning beyond-successful author of the White House Chef series, and the Manor of Murder series, and so many more wonderful books--has accepted another challenge. You will LOVE this book.

And we are thrilled she's here today to tell us about it.

Technology in crime fiction, friend or enemy?

For crime fiction authors, technology is great.

Except when it isn’t. Which is why I like to think technology is crime fiction’s frenemy: supportive and fun when your manuscript is rolling along but quick to betray you when the going gets tough.

Here’s the tricky thing about devising mysteries and thrillers: A writer needs to give the villain enough room to carry out his nefarious plan and be successful, but in a way the bad guy will eventually be caught. It can’t happen right away, though. The villain needs to have a reasonable expectation of getting away with it. He will, of course. That’s what the story’s all about.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve plotted a fictional murder and realized belatedly—and with great disappointment—that my evil plan won’t work. Most often, it’s because of technology. In one memorable draft of Virtual Sabotage, the key scene I’d envisioned involved an intricate sequence of events and precise timing. The power goes out. The phones don’t work. A character realizes he ought to call for help but can’t. I wrote the scene and was even a little bit proud of it.

When it came to my first revision, however, I wondered why the character didn’t simply use his cell phone. Duh

Okay, fine. I rewrote it. In this version another character surreptitiously pockets the cell so that the first character can’t find it.

But wait. What if the cell phone’s owner received a call or text at that very moment? Murphy’s Law says it could happen. As the author, I could keep the cell silent for the duration of the scene, but that’s not good storytelling. Too much is at stake.

A little research and—voila!—I discovered that there are devices capable of shielding cell phones from sending or receiving signals. Although technology nearly stymied me, technology came to my rescue.

It’s getting harder to commit a crime without an audience these days. Audience = witnesses. Security cameras are perched in virtually all public spaces. At the first whiff of trouble, nearly everyone whips out a phone to start recording. And don’t get me started on Alexa, Siri, or the Internet of Things.

Evidence is everywhere because technology is everywhere.

The immediate identification of criminals —while good for society in real life—can cause serious consternation for a crime fiction writer. A story’s climax may occur in the scene where the killer is apprehended or the criminal mastermind foiled. But readers don’t want the immediate gratification of resolution by chapter two. Where’s the fun in that?

Technology can make it hard to write believable crime fiction.

On the other hand, where would crime fiction be without technology? From magnifying glasses to forensic microscopes; from fingerprint-matching to DNA testing; from dial phones with curly cords attached to the wall to virtual reality, technology has been detectives’ reliable partner for many years. In some ways it’s almost like they’ve grown up together.

Julie and her first...typewriter!
Consider Sue Grafton’s alphabet series and her indomitable P.I., Kinsey Millhone. When the series ended in 2017, it was 1989 in the books. Home computers, as we know them today, were still out of reach. Note cards, a telephone, a typewriter, and a car were the tools Kinsey turned to most often. By contrast, K.J. Howe’s present-day hostage negotiator, Thea Paris (The Freedom Broker, Skyjack) has a veritable arsenal of technology at her fingertips. And what she doesn’t have on hand she can obtain with call to the right person (and her negotiating skills). These women get their jobs done admirably using the tools available to them.

Contemporary crime writers eager to craft a timely and inventive tale must utilize today’s technology or risk appearing clueless. They also benefit, from the fact that as writers of fiction, we’re allowed to expand on current technology and even invent some of our own.

Julie's daughter trying virtual reality
That’s what I’ve done in Virtual Sabotage. I’ve taken today’s virtual reality headsets and given them an upgrade. In my book, virtual reality is significantly more sophisticated than it is today. VR is everywhere in Virtual Sabotage, as ubiquitous as cell phones are now. The illusions in my fictional VR are not merely a simple display. They’re brain-generated immersive experiences that can trigger real physiological reactions from unwary participants. That’s why they need lifeguards for the brain—envoys like my protagonist, Kenna Ward.
Julie tries Virtual Reality

Although the technology isn’t real yet, it soon could be.

Think about the world we live in right now. Things we take for granted would have been considered outrageous and virtually impossible by our ancestors. And yet, here we are.

For writers of contemporary crime fiction, technology is a force that cannot be ignored. Whether it serves as a story’s catalyst or causes a plot to crumble, technology will always be crime fiction’s frenemy. What are your favorite uses of technology in fiction? Or your favorite technology fails? I’d love to hear from you!

HANK: When I was asked to edit my TIME books for new editions, I realized  the plot of AIR TIME depended on...beepers. Yup. Beepers. I fixed it, but there was a moment when I worried I'd been in the midst of an epic techno fail. What about you? And a copy of VIRTUAL SABOTAGE  to one very very lucky commenter!

Julie Hyzy is the New York Times bestselling and Anthony Award-winning author of the standalone thriller, VIRTUAL SABOTAGE(October 23, 2018, Calexia Press),the White House Chef mystery series, the Manor of Murder mystery series and the Alex St. James mystery series.

A new stand-alone thriller from the New York Times bestselling author Julie Hyzy, Virtual Sabotage introduces Kenna Ward, an envoy for a virtual reality company whose implants create a thrilling world that allows people to create daring scenarios in a safe environment. Most of the time, that is. When in the rare instance the human brain mistakes the terrifying event as real, it's up to Ward to enter the scenario and pull them back to reality. But when a key envoy goes rogue and people begin responding in odd and dangerous ways, Ward delves deeper, finding a sinister conspiracy to take over not only the virtual reality world, but the real one as well. Ward must stop it before there are no longer any independent minds left to control.

Mozilla VR Blog: Lessons Learned while Designing for the Immersive Web      Cache   Translate Page
Lessons Learned while Designing for the Immersive Web

In this Q&A, independent UX designer and creative catalyst [Nadja Haldimann](https://twitter.com/TheNadj) talks about how she approached working with Mozilla on the [new Firefox Reality browser](https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2018/09/18/firefox-reality-now-available/) for virtual reality (VR). Before launch, Nadja and Mozilla’s Mixed Reality team worked with Seattle-based [BlinkUX](https://blinkux.com/) to do user testing. Here’s what they learned, and the solutions they found, to create a web browser that people can use strapped to their faces.

How difficult is it to design for an immersive, 3D environment, compared to 2D software?
It’s not necessarily more difficult – all the same design principles still apply – but it is quite different. One of the things that you have to account for is how the user perceives space in a headset – it seems huge. So instead of designing for a rectangular window inside a rectangular display, you’re suspending a window in what looks to be a very large room. The difficulty there is that people want to fill that room with a dozen browser windows, and maybe have a YouTube video, baseball game or stock ticker running in the background. But in reality, we only have these 2-inch screens to work with, one for each eye, and the pixels of just half a cell phone screen. But the perception is it’s 1,000 times bigger than a desktop. They think they’re in a movie theater.

OK, so here you have this massive 3D space. You can put anything in there you want. What did you create?
That was a really big question for us: what is the first thing people see when they open the browser? We built two things for the Firefox Reality home page. First, we worked with digital artists to create scenes users could choose as the background, because, just like on a 2D desktop browser, we found people want to customize their browser window with themes and images that mean something to them. The goal was to create environments that were grounding and inviting, especially for people who might be experiencing an immersive environment for the first time.

Second, we created a content feed to help people find great new 3D experiences on the web. Immersive media is just getting off the ground, so content is somewhat limited today but growing quickly. The content feed showcases quality, family-friendly content that supports the WebVR API, so it’s easy to view on multiple devices.

Lessons Learned while Designing for the Immersive Web

What kinds of limitations or challenges did you run into while designing the browser’s UI?
In VR, the most important thing is to make the user comfortable. In the past, a significant number of people have had trouble with nausea and motion sickness — and women are more susceptible, according to research. You can avoid that by delivering a smooth, responsive experience, where the display can render the content very, very quickly. The best experience is one where the user actually forgets they’re in a VR environment. They’re happy spending time there and they want to keep exploring.

The first problem we ran into was that people felt like they were floating above the floor. Part of that was because we had the camera height set to 5’ 6”, which is roughly the height of an adult standing up. But in user testing, people were sitting down. So there was a disconnect between what people were seeing in the headset and where they knew their physical bodies to be. The other part was that we were using colors to indicate floor, without enough texture. It’s textures that let our brains identify distance in VR. We created low poly environments with limited textures, so people could perceive the floor, and that helped people feel more comfortable in the environment.

Another surprise was how people perceive an app window size in the immersive environment. In 2D, people talk about making a window “smaller” or “bigger”, and everyone knows how to change that. In 3D, users were more likely to say they wanted to put a window “farther away” or “bring it closer”. It’s the same fix, design-wise: you just give people a way to resize the window. But it’s interesting how differently people relate to objects in 3D. It’s a more tactile, interactive mindset.

Who were you designing this browser for?
That’s a good question because, in the beginning, we didn’t know exactly. The Firefox Reality browser is one of the first standalone VR browsers that lets people surf the 3D web, and it is built to work with newer standalone headsets that are super-affordable and wireless, devices like the Oculus Go, HTC VIVE Focus, and Lenovo Mirage Solo (Google Daydream). So it’s a pretty new market.

Based on business and personal use cases, we came up with personas, most of which were familiar with VR and 3D already: Gamers, architects, students, business travelers, and grandparents. But really the market for this product is extremely wide. We expect that VR will create a new genre of media that I believe will become a new standard. And our testing bore that out: People were interested in watching video in VR, with friends, in a theater-like setting, so it’s interactive. One person was excited to watch in bed, because it was easier to stare straight up to the ceiling with his headset on than it was to mess around with a laptop.

Lessons Learned while Designing for the Immersive Web

What was the biggest design surprise?
We ran into a lot of issues with having a virtual keyboard in the interface. People complained that the keyboard was too wide and it was awkward to select the letters. It was too difficult to find special characters like umlauts.

We made a bunch of tweaks so the virtual keyboard was easier to use. We also accelerated our timeline for voice input. In the initial release, we added a microphone icon to the URL bar so the user can click on that and talk to the browser, instead of typing in a search query.

What else did you learn from user testing?
People brought up privacy. Could we add profiles, like Netflix has? Can they save programs for later viewing? Could they have a guest account? Also there’s a need to have parental controls, because adult content is a big interest in VR. VR content is still quite limited, but people are already thinking about how to manage access to it in their homes.

Lessons Learned while Designing for the Immersive Web

What design tools did you use to create a 3D UI?
We’re designers, not programmers and short of learning Unity which has a steep learning curve, we needed to find some in-VR design tools that allowed us to import 2D and 3D objects and place them in space. The design tools for 2D, like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Sketch, and InVision, don’t work for 3D, and there are only a few immersive 3D design tools out there today. We tried Google Blocks, Gravity Sketch, and Tvori before landing on Sketchbox. It’s an early-stage in-VR design tool with just enough functionality to help us get a feel for size, distance, and spacing. It also helped us communicate those coordinates to our software engineers.

What’s next?
We’re now working on adding multi-window support, so people can multitask in a VR browser the same way they do in desktop browsers today. We’re also planning to create a Theater Video setting, to give people an option to watch movies in a theater mode that’s a bigger screen in a large dark room. So it’ll be a lot like a physical movie theater, but in a VR headset. In the next 1.1 release, we’re planning to add support for 360-degree movies, bookmarks, repositioning the browser window, and exploring additional voice input options as well as early design work for augmented reality devices. It’s a work in progress!

India's OTT content market expected to touch Rs 1420 cr by 2020      Cache   Translate Page

MUMBAI: The Indian OTT content market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 26 per cent and touch Rs 1420 crore by 2020, as per the ‘2018 Fast Track India: Reimaging the Content Ecosystem’ forum. In 2017, the market was estimated to be Rs 710 crore.

The 2018 Fast Track India: Reimaging the Content Ecosystem is a knowledge series forum by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce (FICCI).

At the inaugural address, Maharashtra government secretary & director general, information & public relations and special inspector general of police, cyber Brijesh Singh said, “India has a rich cultural history and a vibrant content industry. The time is right for digital content players to showcase India’s soft power through homegrown stories that connect with a global audience. Sectoral regulations and policies will create new opportunities for the domestic industry in addition to boosting innovation and growth.”

Disinformation and integrity of the data ecosystem have raised several questions for the industry and for regulators globally. The heavy dependence on data-based innovation and regulatory responses to privacy challenges, further raise policy questions for India. As governments and market participants seek to devise appropriate accountability and liability frameworks for global media platforms, isolated policy decisions can be detrimental to projected growth outcomes.

On liability regimes evolving globally for intermediary platforms, MPA VP and regional legal counsel, Asia Pacific Michael Schlesinger said, “India stands on the verge of a bright digital future, one in which creators, consumers and intermediaries all function symbiotically in a healthy internet ecosystem. Still, unique challenges like online piracy must be addressed. Thankfully, India is starting to ensure appropriate rules of the road, including site blocking to reduce piracy traffic, an infringing website list to choke ad revenues, and domain seizures by the Maharashtra cyber unit to keep the internet ecosystem in India more honest. Steps like these should accompany others to ensure all players including internet platforms are more accountable.”

Speaking in a panel on online content regulation, Eros International Media Ltd group general counsel Aamod Gupte said, “While we have been discussing the need for self regulation of content by OTT players, in a sense we may have missed the bus. With the institution of the Digital Communications Regulator of India (DCRAI), there is possible regulatory oversight for digital content and that is something we need to watch out for. This is not just a name change but clear policy change.”

India is on track to becoming the second largest video-viewing audience globally; it is expected to reach 500 million by 2020 from 250 million in 2017.

On the ‘Video Market: Harnessing Innovations and Partnerships’ panel, Shemaroo Entertainment Ltd COO Kranti Gada said, “As digital video consumption goes mass and the market gets more and more crowded, audiences will compel us to innovate and this may not be just limited to technology and content but also in collaborations and partnerships. While we at Shemaroo sit on premium content and years of consumer insights, we are of the philosophy that collaborations and partnerships eventually make businesses sustainable and scalable.”

“Viewers have demanded a world of technology innovation where content lives on multiple screens, the exciting task for creators is to now tell innovative stories. We need to weave plots and characters that, as never before, live across traditional media, digital media, and social media,” said TV and virtual reality producer Jonathan Dotan.

The Embodied Church in a Digital Age      Cache   Translate Page

Should we cheer or moan when online churches perform virtual baptisms?

Virtual Reality Church’s first baptism took place in a 3D house with an underground pool and a massive billboard overhead proclaiming “A Special Baptism and Communion service.” Alina Delp, 46—portrayed as a purple, robot-like avatar—stood submerged in the water while Pastor D. J. Soto proclaimed her new life in Christ and her sins washed away. When her avatar floated to the surface, dozens of congregants and family members cheered, their avatars sending heart and clap icons floating skyward.

Delp rarely leaves her house due to erythromelalgia, a rare condition that makes it painful to be outside for longer than a few minutes. Baptism would have been difficult for her in the past. With the virtual baptism, her family members from all over the country were able to witness the event in real time.

“When the opportunity came to me, I just had to do it. I was so excited that church was an option for me, that baptism was an option for me,” she said.

She believes it was a real experience, just like getting baptized in water.

“It was powerful. As D. J. was speaking and I was under the water, I could feel this life I lived before being lifted away, and there was this new, amazing future for me,” she said, getting emotional. “I was there. It counts.”

Virtual Reality (VR) Church is just the newest iteration in a series of digital church trends that have picked up steam in the past few decades—from livestreaming entire church services, to virtual campuses that stream a sermon, to fully digital churches and digital missionaries.

Such technology is increasingly used for evangelism and spiritual identity. More than three-quarters of Americans own a smartphone, and nearly ...
