Think about all the happenings of the past few months: first, the game's launch date was pushed back to finetune and balance the gameUbisoft has modified the game worldwide to appeal to Chinese censors – the community did not take it kindly. The game’s maps and user interface got changed, which is why the game got over fifteen hundred negative ratings on Steam. One example from Cthonic: „A well-known game company to bow his head to a fascist government is disgraceful. Why should every player in the world obey a bully? You’re sending a message that bullying works. Restricting liberty works.” The game’s subreddit is full of this subject – the fact that Ubisoft modified anything in the game to have the game legally launch in China (where there are hundreds of millions of potential players, thus a significant market), is offensive to them. „By adhering to Chinese…

Blind Item: Child star anonymously takes to Reddit for legal advice regarding greedy parents      Cache   Translate Page
Image and video hosting by TinyPic#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

Someone claiming to be a child star ("not a J Law or Swift, [but] in the public eye") recently posted on /legaladvice two days ago, and since then gossip sites like BG and CDAN have reposted the post in an effort to identify who the child star might be (or, more importantly, how to help the child star out which is the only reason they went to Reddit in the first place).

In replies to comments, the user gave their age as 16 and location as CA and said that their father works in the industry.

Obviously, this could all be complete bullshit and an elaborate hoax, but other gossip sites have reposted it already.

The full text is available at the post, which is still up. but here is an excerpt:

Post Title: My father took all of my money and claims he legally can manage it for me because I'm a minor. In addition, he's spending it on himself.

Location: United States of America, California

I am a minor in the entertainment industry. While certainly not a J Law or Swift, I am in the public eye. I still live with my family. Recently (I don't want to say how recent), I've found success, and am now making more money than my parents combined. This doesn't sit well with them. They aren't poor but also aren't rich, I would consider us an "Upper Middle Class" family not counting my income. As time has gone on and I've found more success and as such made more money, they have become increasingly bitter about it. Last week my father stopped just being bitter.

My father created my bank accounts when I was young. He's my parent so I never saw any reason to not trust him, until now. Five days ago my father closed my accounts and transferred all of my money to himself. I told him that was illegal but he said he's my legal guardian and has the right to decide if I'm mature enough to handle my own money or not. He told me my recent purchase of a new three thousand dollar TV (which was for the family living room) was proof I wasn't capable of being responsible with that amount of money, and so he was going to watch over it for me until I was of age. My mother is, if not complicit, in denial. She refuses to talk with me about it and tells me I don't know what I'm talking about.

The most popular guesses are Stranger Things kids (because those are probably the only child actors people can think of). While some of the ST kids are 16, none of them are native to CA or live there. In any case, if this is legit, I hope this kid gets some good advice and gets their money back.

3 Not-So-Important Questions the Fantastic Beasts Franchise Has to Answer      Cache   Translate Page
Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Dark and difficult times lie ahead for the beloved Newt Scamander and his friends in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald as Dumbledore's battle against Grindelwald's rise to power continues to strengthen. Before the line between good vs evil begins to divide our wizarding companions in the latest sequel, there are a few not-so-serious questions that I'd love for the series to answer over the next few films. What moments in Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts history you'd love to see come to live in the spin-off? Let me know in the comments below! (This post is spoiler-free of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald!)

Dumbledore's Scar London Underground

How did Dumbledore get that scar of the London Underground on his leg?

At the beginning of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, we get a little TMI from Dumbledore. In responding to Professor McGonagall's concerns about Harry's scar and if there's anything he could do to lessen its appearance, the Hogwarts Headmaster replies, "Scars can come in handy. I have one myself above my left knee that is a perfect map of the London Underground." Is Dumbledore just exaggerating to put McGonagall at ease, or does he really have this scar and did he get it in a battle against Grindelwald? We definitely see some wand action in The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer, so it'd be fun to see an easter egg of this quip from the first book.

Argus Filch with Mrs Norris

Is Mrs Norris a maledictus?

A big character from Harry Potter has turned out to be a Maledictus - visit this blog post if you want to be spoiled. But basically a maledictus is a female born with a blood-curse who will eventually turn into a beast or an exotic creature. During the Harry Potter series, one squib's bond with his furry companion always sparked fans' curiosity. Throughout the books and in the films, Argus Filch and Mrs. Norris always had a knack for knowing what the other one was thinking and feeling. Many fans became suspicious that Mrs Norris might be more than just a mere cat. Will Fantastic Beasts put this longstanding theory to rest or let it live on?

Newt Scamander Hufflepuff Common Room

What does the Hufflepuff Common Room truly look like?

This isn't so much as a question as a lingering curiosity, but Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is venturing back from the NYC in the first film to our beloved home called Hogwarts. From the look of several film stills and the Comic Con trailer, some characters will be facing new challenges there or confronting important moments from their past. One has to wonder if we're ever going to see the inside of Newt's former common room. Granted, he's not a current student at the school like Harry Potter was, however, it was a shame to see Ravenclaw Tower excluded from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 as apart of Harry trying to find a horcrux during the battle of Hogwarts. If the story leads more into Newt's childhood, it'd be nice to see more of Hogwarts than what we've seen before.

Cache   Translate Page

WORCESTER City Youth secured a notable double over Redditch United.
Free Will Astrology      Cache   Translate Page
November 7–13 by Rob Brezsny

ARIES (March 21–April 19): In 1994, Aries pop diva Mariah Carey collaborated with an associate to write the song "All I Want for Christmas Is You." It took them 15 minutes to finish it. Since then, it has generated $60 million in royalties. I wish I could unconditionally predict that you, too, will efficiently spawn a valuable creation sometime soon. Current planetary alignments do suggest that such a development is more possible than usual. But because I tend to be conservative in my prophecies, I won't guarantee anything close to the $60 million figure. In fact, your reward may be more spiritual in nature than financial.

TAURUS (April 20–May 20): A post on Reddit asked readers to write about "the most underrated feeling of all time." One person said, "When you change the sheets on your bed." Another extolled "the feeling that comes when you pay all your bills and you've still got money in the bank." Others said, "dancing under the rain," "physical contact like a pat on the back when you're really touch starved," and "listening to a song for the first time and it's so good you just can't stop smiling." I bring this to your attention, Taurus, because I suspect that the next two weeks will bring you a flood of these pleasurable underrated feelings.

GEMINI (May 21–June 20): "Beer makes you feel the way you ought to feel without beer," wrote Gemini author Henry Lawson. Do you have any methods for making yourself feel like you've drunk a few beers that don't involve drinking a few beers? If not, I highly recommend that you find at least one. It will be especially important in the coming weeks for you to have a way to alter, expand, or purify your consciousness without relying on literal intoxicants or drugs. The goal is to leave your groove before it devolves into a rut.

CANCER (June 21–July 22): Study the following five failed predictions. (1) "There is no likelihood man can ever tap the power of the atom." —Robert Millikan, Nobel laureate in physics, 1923. (2) "This 'telephone' has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us." —Western Union internal memo, 1876. (3) "Rail travel at high speeds is not possible because passengers, unable to breathe, would die of asphyxia." —Dionysius Lardner, scientist, 1830. (4) "There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home." —Ken Olsen, president of Digital Equipment Corporation, 1977. (5) "Most Cancerians will never overcome their tendencies toward hypersensitivity, procrastination, and fear of success." —Lanira Kentsler, astrologer, 2018. (P.S. What you do in the next 12 months could go a long way toward permanently refuting the last prediction.)

LEO (July 23–Aug 22): German scientists have created cochlear implants for gerbils that have been genetically modified, enabling the creatures to "listen" to light. The researchers' work is ultimately dedicated to finding ways to improve the lives of people with hearing impairments. What might be the equivalent of you gaining the power to "hear light"? I understand that you might resist thinking this way. "That makes no sense," you may protest or "There's no practical value in fantasizing about such an impossibility." But I hope you'll make the effort anyway. In my view, stretching your imagination past its limits is the healing you need most right now. I also think that doing so will turn out to be unexpectedly practical.

VIRGO (Aug 23–Sept 22): Here's useful wisdom from the poet Rumi. "Our defects are the ways that glory gets manifested," he said. "Keep looking at the bandaged place. That's where the light enters you." Playwright Harrison David Rivers interprets Rumi's words to mean, "Don't look away from your pain, don't disengage from it, because that pain is the source of your power." I think these perspectives are just what you need to meditate on, Virgo. To promote even more healing in you, I'll add a further clue from poet Anna Kamienska: "Where your pain is, there your heart lies also." (P.S. Rumi is translated by Coleman Barks, Kamienska by Clare Cavanagh.)

LIBRA (Sept 23–Oct 22): Artist David Hockney is proud of how undemanding he is toward his friends and associates. "People tell me they open my e-mails first," he says, "because they aren't demands and you don't need to reply. They're simply for pleasure." He also enjoys giving regular small gifts. "I draw flowers every day and send them to my friends so they get fresh blooms." Hockney seems to share the perspective expressed by author Gail Godwin, who writes, "How easy it was to make people happy, when you didn't want or need anything from them." In accordance with astrological omens, Libra, I suggest you have fun employing these approaches in the coming weeks.

SCORPIO (Oct 23–Nov 21): I am not currently a wanderer or voyager or entrepreneur or swashbuckler. But at other times in my life, I have had extensive experience with those roles. So I know secrets about how and why to be a wanderer and voyager and entrepreneur and swashbuckler. And it's clear to me that in the coming weeks, you could benefit in unforeseen ways from researching and embodying the roles of curious wanderer and brave voyager and savvy entrepreneur and prudent swashbuckler.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22–Dec 21): "The best thing one can do when it is raining is let it rain." That brilliant formulation came from poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Does it seem so obvious as to not need mentioning? Bear with me while I draw further meaning from it and suggest you use it as an inspiring metaphor in the coming weeks. When it rains, Sagittarius, let it rain; don't waste time and emotional energy complaining about the rain. Don't indulge in fruitless fantasizing about how you might stop the rain and how you'd love to stop the rain. In fact, please refrain from defining the rain as a negative event, because, after all, it is perfectly natural and is crucial for making the crops grow and replenishing our water supply. (P.S. Your metaphorical "rain" will be equally useful.)

CAPRICORN (Dec 22–Jan 19): "Every true love and friendship is a story of unexpected transformation," writes activist and author Elif Shafak. "If we are the same person before and after we loved, that means we haven't loved enough." I bring this to your attention because you're in a phase when your close alliances should be activating healing changes in your life. If for some reason your alliances are not yet awash in the exciting emotions of redemption and reinvention, get started on instigating experimental acts of intimacy.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20–Feb 18): I suspect you will be an especially arousing influence in the coming weeks. You may also be inspiring and disorienting, with unpredictable results. How many transformations will you unleash? How many expectations will you dismantle? How many creative disruptions will you induce in the midst of the daily grind? I hesitate to underestimate the messy beauty you'll stir up or the rambunctious gossip you'll provoke. In any case, I plan to be richly amused by your exploits, and I hope everyone else will be, as well. For best results, I will pray to the Goddess of Productive Fun, begging Her to ensure that the commotions and uproars you catalyze will be in service to love and kindness.

PISCES (Feb 19–March 20): Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson wasn't always a wild and crazy writer. Early in his career, he made an effort to compose respectable, measured prose. When he finally gave up on that project and decided he could "get away with" a more uninhibited style, he described it as being "like falling down an elevator shaft and landing in a pool full of mermaids." I foresee a metaphorically comparable development in your future, Pisces.

PROVOCO: L' ESERCIZIO DI CONSUMAZIONE DEVE POTERSI AUTO SOSTENERE!      Cache   Translate Page

No!

Come?

Stimulants, blood sugar and endocrinology       Cache   Translate Page
I'm looking for high-quality (ideally: peer-reviewed, large cohort) information on the effects of amphetamine stimulants (eg Adderal) on blood glucose levels and insulin response. How does long-term prescription stimulant use affect blood glucose levels?

From looking around, a lot of people are also looking for similar information, but get low-quality responses (anecdotes from non-specialist med students, bullshit woo dieticians, pseudoscience from body builders, etc.). I'm specifically concerned with the effects of amphetamines on glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis, and epinephrine production and response. I'm willing to bet that MeFi's high librarian and researcher quotient will turn up better resources than reddit lift bros. I know that stimulant use can be associated with hypoglycemia, but stimulants also seem to be agonists for insulin inhibition, and I'm interested in the long-term effects of that.

And so it begins (again).

This month I pledge to grow my something of a Pedro Pascal inspired lip-terpillar in the name of raising awareness (and $s) for men's health.

If you enjoy my wholly non-monetized blog, I'd like to ask you to donate to my Movember fundraising efforts. I've kicked them off by donating $100 myself and I'm hoping you'll help me to raise more than last year's $4,500.

Contrary to what some believe, Movember is not a prostate cancer charity per se, and though some of its funds do support prostate cancer research and treatment, Movember supports multiple men's health initiatives including those involving mental health, suicide, body image, eating disorders, testicular cancer, substance use disorders, and more. Regarding prostate cancer, I was pleased to see that Movember encourages patients to speak with their physicians about the value (or lack thereof) of PSA screening, rather than suggesting it's a good idea for one and all.

Donating is easy. Just click here and give! And of course, Movember is a registered charity, so all donations are fully tax deductible.

In return I vow to continue to blog freely, to never allow advertisements, and to regularly post pictures of what might well have been an effective form of birth control in my home had I sported it year round back in the day.

For me the ask is also personal. My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer when I was in medical school, and soon I'll need to start wrestling with whether or not with that strong family history, I should walk the slippery slope of testing. My oldest cousin Marshall - we lost him to opioids.

Every dollar counts, no donation is too small.

(And if you want, you can make your donation anonymously so no one (me included) will know you hang out here from time to time.)

Laundering laws, not racism, may have barred Drake from gambling in Vancouver      Cache   Translate Page

VANCOUVER—British Columbia’s new anti-money-laundering laws, not racial profiling, may have been what prevented Drake from gambling in Vancouver last weekend, according to several sources — including an online post purporting to be from an employee at the casino.

The Toronto rapper, full name Aubrey Drake Graham, just turned 32 on Oct. 24 and has a penchant for visiting casinos around the date, according to previous social-media posts.

On Instagram, Drake wrote: “Parq Casino is the worst run business I have ever witnessed … Profiling me and not allowing me to gamble when I had everything they originally asked me for.”

Drake’s account was disputed by a Reddit user who claimed he is a Parq casino employee, though StarMetro could not independently verify the truth of that claim. The user didn’t respond to an email requesting more information. CTV News, however, said it verified the events described with another unnamed source.

The user, “O-A-N,” alleged that Drake ran afoul of rules requiring he produce proof he withdrew funds of more than $10,000 the same day and declare its source.

“Basically, you need a bank receipt for the same day you buy in,” the Reddit post said. “He was refused service because of (the British Columbia Lottery Corporation’s) policy that requires source of funds from any player trying to buy in for more than $10,000 in cash.

Drake accuses Vancouver casino of racial profiling

“Parq tried to do everything they could to allow him to gamble … including calling up BCLC. Drake and his entourage were well informed of this policy when they were refused service. If Parq allowed Drake to break this law, they could lose their gambling licence.”

According to an update from the same Reddit user, Drake did end up gambling both that night and the next day.

“He was there for at least six hours that I know of,” the user wrote. “Drake did in fact gamble for a while. Not only did he have his own ($10,000) buy-in, he had a friend at one point wire him money to Parq, which they accepted, and he gambled some more.

“When he lost that, he tried to buy in again with cash and he was refused again. Seems like after losing everything, he left and threw and made that post.”

A spokesperson for Parq Vancouver told StarMetro she “can’t comment on specific customers” for privacy reasons but said that “Parq Vancouver is responsible for following all of the regulations set out by B.C. (Lotteries Corp). We follow these guidelines for every customer.”

The casino said in a Saturday post on its Instagram account it is “constantly improving our communications process to ensure that these new regulations are better understood by all guests ... We are operating in one of the most complex, highly regulated industries and are always looking to better our communication and customer service.

“We categorically stand against racism of any kind.”

In a statement on its website, B.C. Lotteries Corporation says it requires reporting of any cash buy-in of $10,000 or more, including the customer’s identification and a bank receipt.

“All cash and bank draft/certified cheque buy-ins for $10,000 or more, in one or more transactions within a 24-hour period, will require a source of funds receipt,” the Crown corporation said. “The original receipt must be from the same day of the transaction and show the financial institution, branch number and account number.

“This information will be required before a customer is allowed to buy in.”

After Attorney General David Eby took office last year, he described being shown video footage of hundreds of thousands of dollars — in elastic-bound $20s — being dumped from duffel bags at casino teller wickets. He responded by ordering a report by former RCMP regional commissioner Peter German.

German’s bombshell report was titled Dirty Money. Compared to other jurisdictions, B.C. had allowed money laundering and organized criminal activity to flourish over a decade in its casinos, the report said, and the previous government had shuttered an anti-money-laundering enforcement unit despite insiders’ warnings about the problem.

As a result, Eby tabled and passed a revamp of B.C.’s casino legislation, including measures to force gaming businesses to flag all transactions over $10,000 to authorities and require them to prove where they got the cash on the same day.

And according to Eby on Monday, the new laws have worked, causing a “remarkable and sharp decline in suspicious transactions,” adding there’s been a “reduction of about 100 times from the peak of suspicious cash transactions.”

For that reason, Eby said, there can be no exceptions regarding disclosure.

B.C.’s rules are by no means unique. Had Drake or any celebrity walked into, say, a Las Vegas casino owned by Parq’s operator, Paragon Gaming, he would have discovered a tight net of laws and regulations also govern cash transactions there.

German visited Las Vegas, the hub of gaming on the continent, and met with enforcement officials and regulators there. His recommendations were largely inspired by Nevada’s model, including encouraging alternatives to cash and requiring identification and detailed record-keeping on large transactions.

“I hypothesized that a box of cash arrived with rubber bands at a cash cage,” German wrote about his meetings with Las Vegas’ deputy chief of the enforcement division and a casino investigator. “What would occur? The officers doubted that this would occur in Las Vegas.”

According to the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (the equivalent of Canada’s FinTRAC), “a casino is required to file a (Currency Transaction Report by Casinos) on currency transactions by or on behalf of any customer that, alone or when aggregated, exceed $10,000 in a gaming day.”

The same law applies to poker players buying in with “more than $10,000 in chips with currency, in a single transaction or a series of related transactions in the same gaming day.”

Violations in the U.S. could cost a casino $25,000 every day of the violation occurring, up to $100,000 per violation.

Drizzy has said nothing beyond his call-out on Instagram. But in his song “Diplomatic Immunity,” released on Jan. 19, he sings about a previous incident at a casino in Detroit:

“I refuse to comply with regulations … Motor City Casino, I’m at the cage with my old licence. They tell me, ‘Don’t worry, I got your money.’”

A History of People Not Understanding How Women's Bodies Work      Cache   Translate Page

undefined

sinner-mon / Reddit

Here's the thing - a lot of men are just woefully ignorant as to the workings and basic anatomy of women's bodies. And the same applies vice-versa - plenty of women have total misconceptions of men's bodies. The truth is that our sexual education curriculum (and really entire means of talking about the issue) is pretty subpar, which leaves a lot of people misinformed or plain ol' left in the dark completely. The difference becomes a bit more stark, however, when one considers that women's bodies are inherently a bit more complicated than men's (generally) - the menstrual cycle alone is a massive part of a woman's life, and there's really no actual equivalent for men.

But again, the entire conversation around anatomy and sex education is pretty awful, so young men shouldn't feel TOO bad about not knowing the full deal. However, it's not difficult to - ya know - just talk to women in your life or do some basic research online to fill in the gaps in your learning. Still, shockingly few actually bother to do this kind of simple legwork to better understand the other 50% of the world on the most basic level, which consistently leads to incredible, baffling examples of pure incompetence.

And thanks to the internet, we have many of these examples forever enshrined in posts - and no longer limited to verbal anecdotes. And...it's pretty disheartening.

But something truly incredible that I had really never considered before was how badly men had been misunderstanding women's anatomy THROUGHOUT TIME. Our modern ignorance towards the subject is not a new thing at all - which brings me to one of the greatest Tumblr threads I've ever seen, outlining the ways many classical artists completely misrepresented women's bodies in ridiculous ways:

A History of People Not Understanding How Women's Bodies Work

So - please - if you're a modern person, either speak to any woman in your life or do some basic research on the internet (which is literally just filled with information on all sorts of things, you should really check it out). And if you're an old-timey artist....well, it's probably too late for you, but what the HELL, dude?

Diablo Immortal and How Hype Culture Can Negatively Impact Game Reveals [Dual Shockers] "Last weekend saw the reveal of Diablo Immortal, a brand new game in Blizzard's long-running series. Unfortunately, it was met with overwhelming negative reception upon its reveal by fans, as it was for iOS and Android and announced when fans were expecting a Diablo remaster or the next main entry in the franchise, Diablo 4. As Diablo Immortal doesn't even look that bad, the negative response to it highlights a larger recurring problem with hype culture and how it can prevent fans from seeing the bigger picture or giving something potentially good a chance." [YouTube][BlizzCon Reactions]

• Blizzard Says It Wasn't Expecting Fans To Be This Angry About Diablo Immortal [Kotaku]
"Backlash to Diablo Immortal, however, has continued to rage across social media, YouTube, Reddit, and other sites since then. It stems, for the most part, from a pre-BlizzCon Blizzard blog post that was meant to temper fans' expectations and clarify that there are multiple Diablo projects in the works, but which did say that "we do intend to share some Diablo-related news with you at the show." The blog post got many fans' hopes up foreven a low-level loot drop of information about Diablo IV. Failing that, they were at least holding out for a remaster of a classic Diablo game. Instead, they got a mobile game that's being developed in collaboration with Chinese company NetEase. Some fans have taken this as a sign that Blizzard has forsaken PC and console in favor of greener mobile pastures—and thus, that they've forsaken the fans that they built their foundation on."
• Diablo: Immortal broke the unspoken rules of Blizzard, and BlizzCon [Polygon]
""The way I've been kind of looking at the mixed comments is what those folks are really saying is they desperately, passionately want the next big thing," Allen Adham, executive producer and Blizzard co-founder told Polygon in a previous interview. "So I actually think that those two items are being conflated ... It's pretty clear to us that there is a huge audience around the world that is gonna love this title. So hopefully we'll get there." I disagree with this assessment, and it ignores the expectations that Blizzard itself has spent decades creating in its fans. So what went wrong with this reveal? How did Blizzard mess up what should have been a fairly standard game announcement? Why is Diablo: Immortal such a bizarre shift for Blizzard, and why is it triggering such rage and anxiety in the audience? You have to look at the big picture to make sense of all this, because there's more logic to this situation than it may appear."
• Diablo Immortal backlash shows once again triple-A publishers are afraid of their audiences [Pocket Gamer]
"Of course, it is perfectly reasonable to dislike the majority of mobile games if they do not fit in with your style. That's a lot of genres to hate, but that's okay. To get so riled up or disappointed with a mobile release of a big IP and start spitting blood seems unreasonable. As if mobile games are so inferior as to be worth no one's time. As if they only exist as a cash grab. It's an opinion stuck firmly in the past. The potential to generate money is no doubt a motivation of course. It's the same motivation that leads these big companies to invest $100 million-plus in a triple-A console game. It's time for people to get with the times and understand that there are hundreds of millions of people who play and enjoy mobile games. Who aren't all gambling addicts. Though that's not to say there isn't a serious discussion to be had about certain monetisation practices (which many Asian countries have cracked down on). It's also quite rich for some websites to decry the toxicity surrounding the Diablo mobile game backlash when those same websites consistently air disappointment about mobile game releases when it comes to big IP. Typical reactions include: "Game has been announced!... but it's for mobile.""

Rockstar Ports Its Old, Antiquated, Flawed Censorial Blacklist For Player Chat Into New 'Red Dead Redemption' Game      Cache   Translate Page

Those familiar with how multiplayer online gaming works know that inter-player chat is both a feature of this gaming genre and one of its primary hellscapes. On the one hand, in-game chat can be both fun when it's part of the game and funny when you get lively banter between players. On the other hand, such chat is also rife with stupid, sophomoric, abusive language casually bandied about by teens and adults alike. Because of this, some game developers have tried to limit what words can be inputted into the game's chat system. The end result of this is mostly spectacular creativity for players dedicated to being assholes in getting around such systems. But for Rockstar, when it came to the online portion of Grand Theft Auto, this chat blacklist was also a place to stupidly blacklist references to illicit gaming sites like "The Pirate Bay", meaning users entering that text would see their words simply disappeared.

But this all gets doubly stupid now that Rockstar is set to release Red Dead Redemption 2, within which it simply ported over its previous blacklist.

As revealed by a user on Reddit, the company has implemented a banned words list, which attempts to deter people from using some of the worst sexual, racial, and religious insults, which is fair enough.

However, the developer has also seen fit to prevent players from talking about sites like The Pirate Bay, with the word ‘PirateBay’ banned from the game. Since the galaxy’s most resilient torrent site is hardly a friend of the gaming industry, the decision is not that much of a surprise. However, the developer goes much further with a whole range of bizarre censoring decisions that start of weirdly and get worse.

Taking them in alphabetical order, first up we have the term ‘BTJunkie’, which refers to a once-prominent torrent indexing site. What’s so special about this platform is that it’s been shut for well over six years. In fact, the site closed down for good in 2012following the massive raid on Kim Dotcom. Safe to say, it’s not coming back.

The examples go on from there. Now, there are a couple of things to say about this. Obviously blacklisting long-dead websites, even if it would have been once understandable that a game developer would want to keep those names out of the game chat, is painfully stupid. I'm not sure what Rockstar thinks it was accomplishing by keeping those site names out of their game chat when those sites were live, but I'm super-certain that they're accomplishing nothing by doing so when those sites are dead. And because, of course, there is the inevitable collateral damage caused by such word-bans.

The initialism ‘VCDQ’ has also made it onto Rockstar’s Great Firewall, which is nothing short of ridiculous. VCDQ – otherwise known as VCDQuality – was a site that reported on freshly-leaked pirate copies of movies and commented on the quality of the release. The site never offered copyrighted content and was a really useful platform. It too has been dead for a number of years.

The other thing to say about this is simply that any company that would so callously treat chat censorship in this way, where the company thinks that a simple port of old blacklists would suffice, is a company that doesn't care much for its own players. Gaming companies can put in these blacklists if they like, and they might be good things when it comes to hateful and abusive language, but they should do so with care. Gamer interaction is kind of a key component of online multiplayer, after all. To treat banning words with so little regard isn't a great look.

So, the end result? Anyone want to place money betting that this censorship of its own customers has made Red Dead 2 free from abusive language and conduct? Or that there aren't more examples of collateral damage out there, specifically since the blacklist also bans the word "Torrent" entirely?

I didn't think so.

Google Maps crash and speed trap reporting now being tested      Cache   Translate Page
Google Maps crash and speed trap reporting

Google Maps is already great at helping you find things to do and getting directions to those things, and now the app is getting even more helpful.

Google appears to be testing crash and speed trap reporting in Google Maps. Some Google Maps for Android users have spotted the feature recently, but Google hasn't made any official announcements about this feature, so it's likely just in small scale testing right now.

When in navigation mode, Google Maps will show a new report button near the bottom of the screen. Tap it and you'll be able to tell the app if you've encountered a crash or speed trap.

Waze is a popular navigation app because it can show you things like crashes and speed traps, and years after buying Waze, it looks like Google is planning to bring one of that app's best features into Google Maps. Crash and speed trap reporting would be great to see in Google Maps since some people prefer that app to Waze. However, since the feature is only in testing right now, it's unclear when or if it'll roll out publicly. Stay tuned.

Spicy Salami Spread (Nduja) – Almost Instant Soft Serve Salami      Cache   Translate Page
I’m not saying this spicy salami spread is as good as traditional nduja, but I am saying this takes about 3 months less time to make, and still delivers most of the characteristics that make this Calabrian delicacy so amazing. And just in case you’re not familiar with nduja, a few of those characteristics are a rich, spicy, super-savory flavor, and soft, luxurious texture.

Finding some decent salami to use should be simple enough, but depending on where you live, the oil-packed Calabrian chilies may not be as easy to acquire. Any decent Italian market will carry them, so ask your Calabrian friends where they shop, but if that doesn’t work, you can find them online as well. Or, you could use another spicy, jarred pepper product like Sambal, or simply use fresh hot chilies like Fresno, or cherry peppers. If it’s spicy, and it’s a pepper, it will work.

You can substitute bacon for the pancetta, but since bacon is smoked, your final product will taste significantly different. Not bad, just different. In any event, the wonderful ways you can use this are extensive. I gave a few ideas in the video, but other highly recommended uses include adding it to pasta sauces, salad dressings, ravioli fillings, and even as a pizza topping.

Having said that, this stuff is so unique, and delicious, your guests might not leave you with much to experiment with, which is fine, since this is so fast and easy to produce. So, with peak entertaining season right in front of us, I really do hope you give this a try soon. Enjoy!

Ingredients for about 2 cups Spicy Salami Spread (Nduja):
4 ounces sliced or diced pancetta, cooked, fat reserved
1/3 cup seeded hot Calabrian peppers
3 tablespoons Calabrian pepper oil from the jar
12 ounces sliced salami
1/4 room temp butter
2 or 3 tablespoons olive oil, or as needed to adjust the texture to your liking

Diablo Immortal and How Hype Culture Can Negatively Impact Game Reveals [Dual Shockers] "Last weekend saw the reveal of Diablo Immortal, a brand new game in Blizzard's long-running series. Unfortunately, it was met with overwhelming negative reception upon its reveal by fans, as it was for iOS and Android and announced when fans were expecting a Diablo remaster or the next main entry in the franchise, Diablo 4. As Diablo Immortal doesn't even look that bad, the negative response to it highlights a larger recurring problem with hype culture and how it can prevent fans from seeing the bigger picture or giving something potentially good a chance." [YouTube][BlizzCon Reactions] • Blizzard Says It Wasn't Expecting Fans To Be This Angry About Diablo Immortal [Kotaku]

Come  Enrico Mentana  vede la politica italiana
 Vero e  falso realismo

Come procedere allora?

Vasto programma, direbbe qualcuno.

Reasons Why Paint Watercolour Is Getting More Popular In The Past Decade | paint watercolour

via WordPress ift.tt/2PNAobu

Whether or not you’re artistically inclined, there’s a acceptable adventitious that you—like millions of added bodies about the world—have been captivated by Bob Ross’s advisory mural paintings and abatement voice. On what would accept been Ross’s 76th birthday, we’re administration 35 facts about the blessed little legend.

Getting Started With Watercolor: What You Need to Know – paint watercolour | paint watercolour

A constant beastly lover, Ross was consistently rescuing blood-soaked animals and nursing them aback to health. As a kid growing up in Florida, this meant one rather aberrant accession to the family: an alligator, which he attempted to abettor aback to bloom in the Ross ancestors bathtub. Alike in his developed life, Ross was consistently arena host to orphaned and afflicted animals, including an epileptic accumulate that lived in his abandoned Jacuzzi.

Ross’s quiet articulation and affable address were two of his best iconic traits, which makes the actuality that he spent 20 years in the United States Air Force and retired with the rank of adept baker all the added surprising. Basically, he was the guy who told anybody abroad what to do.

Before he lent his adapted articulation to The Joy of Painting, Ross spent a lot of time yelling. “I was the guy who makes you abrade the latrine, the guy who makes you accomplish your bed, the guy who screams at you for actuality backward to work,” Ross already said. “The job requires you to be a mean, boxy person. And I was fed up with it. I promised myself that if I anytime got abroad from it, it wasn’t activity to be that way anymore.”

While stationed in Alaska during his assignment in the Air Force, Ross advantaged his artistic ancillary by painting his now-iconic landscapes assimilate aureate pans, which he awash for $25 apiece. Today, they can aback as abundant as $7500 on eBay.

From 1974 to 1982, German painter Bill Alexander hosted an art apprenticeship appearance on PBS, The Magic of Oil Painting, area he aggregate his “wet-on-wet” oil painting technique. Ross apparent the alternation while alive as a bartender, and became an actual fan of the artist. He concluded up belief beneath Alexander, who became his mentor. In fact, Ross committed the aboriginal adventure of his own PBS show, The Joy of Painting, to Alexander. “Years ago, Bill accomplished me this absurd technique,” Ross told viewers. “And I feel as admitting he gave me a adored gift, and I’d like to allotment that allowance with you.”

In the aboriginal 1980s, as Alexander was advancing to retire, he asked Ross to booty over teaching his painting classes. Ross agreed, and set out to bout the country on his own in a motor home, traveling and teaching bodies Alexander’s “wet-on-wet” technique. He told his wife Jane that he’d try it out for one year, and if he didn’t accomplish abundant money, he would acknowledgment to Alaska.

It was during Ross’s time on the alley that he adopted his iconic hairstyle. Back teaching painting wasn’t an acutely advantageous profession, Ross abstruse to amplitude every penny. One way he did this was to save money on haircuts by accepting his locks permed.

Though Ross reportedly hated the coiled hair, he was a agent first, which is why he kept it. “When we got a band of paints and brushes, we put his account on,” Bob Ross Aggregation co-founder Annette Kowalski told Mental Floss. “The logo is a account of Bob with that hair, so he could never get it cut. He wasn’t consistently blessed about that.”

(You can see what he looked like afterwards his brand perm here.)

Though it was Alexander who got Ross started on his career aisle as an artist, it was Kowalski—one of Ross’s students—who put him on the pop ability map. Kowalski, who is generally accustomed as the woman who “discovered” Ross, took a five-day advisory advance with Ross in 1982, and bound became amorous with his abstracted articulation and absolute messages.

In accession to newfound painting skills, Kowalski larboard the chic with a new client: she became Ross’s manager, allowance him agent the accord for The Joy of Painting television appearance with PBS, and later, a band of Bob Ross art supplies.

The Joy of Painting ran new seasons on PBS from 1983 to 1994, so alike at accessible broadcasting ante the appearance charge accept fabricated Ross absolutely a bit of loot, right? Not quite. Ross absolutely did the alternation for free; his assets came from Bob Ross Inc.

Ross’s aggregation awash art food and how-to videotapes, accomplished classes, and alike had a affiliation of traveling art advisers who roamed the apple teaching painting. It’s boxy to anticipate of a bigger advertisement for these articles than Ross’s show.

How did Ross acquisition the time to band all of those shows for free? He could almanac a division about as fast as he could paint. Ross could blast out an absolute 13-episode division of The Joy of Painting in aloof over two days, which freed him up to get aback to teaching lessons, which is area he fabricated his absolute money.

In accession to actuality agitated by about 95 percent of all accessible television stations beyond America, extensive admirers in added than 93.5 actor homes, The Joy of Painting was a hit alfresco of the U.S. as well. The appearance was advertisement in dozens of adopted countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, South Korea, and Turkey.

The Joy of Painting was a big hit in Japan, area it aired alert a day. (His voice, however, was dubbed.) On a appointment to the country, Ross was reportedly chock-full by fans.

“We’re like biologic dealers,” Ross already said of the acceptance of his painting technique. “Come into boondocks and get everybody absolutely absorbed to painting. It doesn’t booty abundant to get you addicted.”

Though he was assuredly a pop ability phenomenon, the art apple didn’t absolutely embrace Ross. “People absolutely apperceive who he is,” Kevin Lavin, a “struggling” painter, told The New York Times in 1991. “In his own way, he is as acclaimed as Warhol.”

“It is formulaic and thoughtless,” sculptor Keith Frank said of Ross’s assignment in the aforementioned article. “Art as therapy.”

“I am abashed by art apprenticeship on television,” added Abstract Expressionist Richard Pousette-Dart, who anesthetized abroad the afterward year. “It’s terrible—bad, bad, bad. They are aloof bartering exploiters, non-artists teaching added non-artists.”

The New York Times paid a appointment to Pearl Acrylic Company, an art accumulation abundance in New York City, area an agent acicular to the “happy little corner” area they kept Ross’s products. “We adumbrate them,” he admitted, “so as not to offend.”

Bill Alexander was one of the artists who wasn’t captivated with Ross’s success, alike admitting he had been his protégé. “He betrayed me,” Alexander told The New York Times. “I invented ‘wet on wet.’ I accomplished him and he is artful me—what bothers me is not aloof that he betrayed me, but that he thinks he can do it better.”

Though allotment of Ross’s address was his communicative tone, none of this allocution of blessed accidents or added blessed little things was ad libbed. “He told me he would lay in bed at night and plan every word,” Kowalski already said. “He knew absolutely what he was doing.”

Though you’d never apperceive it from his painting technique, not all of Ross’s digits were intact. He absent allotment of his larboard basis feel back he was a kid in a woodworking blow while alive with his dad, who was a carpenter.

While copse and wildlife generally helped accompany Ross’s paintings to life, he rarely corrective people. In fact, he admired to accumulate his assignment as people-free as possible.

“I will acquaint you Bob’s better secret,” Kowalski told FiveThirtyEight. “If you notice, his cabins never had chimneys on them. That’s because chimneys represented people, and he didn’t appetite any assurance of a actuality in his paintings.”

The Joy of Painting consistently featured a alternating casting of blessed little animals, with a tiny accumulate alleged Peapod apparently accepting the aggregate of airtime. According to Ross, Peapod admired to sit in his pocket.

Though The Joy of Painting was a admired series, bodies didn’t assume to be watching it to apprentice how to be the abutting Picasso. It was already estimated that alone 10 percent of admirers were absolutely painting forth with Ross.

In 2014, FiveThirtyEight did a statistical breakdown of Ross’s assignment on The Joy of Painting and begin that 91 percent of them included at atomic one tree—by far the best accepted element. (And if he corrective one tree, there was a 93 percent adventitious he’d acrylic a added one—though he referred to any added copse as “friends” on the show.)

On a few occasions, Ross’s son Steve subbed for his dad as a bedfellow host. That aforementioned abstracts set apparent that Steve admired blessed little lakes: 91 percent of Steve’s paintings featured one (as against to Bob’s 34 percent).

Ross attempt 403 episodes of The Joy of Painting and fabricated three near-exact copies of anniversary painting per episode. The aboriginal archetype consistently hid off screen, and Ross referred to it while the cameras formed (none of his on-air paintings were spontaneous). Ross corrective a third archetype back filming finished. This time, an abettor would angle abaft him and breeze photos of anniversary brushstroke; these pictures went into his how-to books.

For all his accepted popularity, there aren’t a lot of interviews with Ross. It has annihilation to do with the artisan actuality publicity-shy—it’s aloof that bodies rarely asked. “I never about-face bottomward requests for interviews,” he already said. “I’m aloof rarely asked.”

For all his hokey-ness, Ross was air-conditioned abundant to be asked to be a bell-ringer for MTV—which he accounted “The acreage of blessed little trees.”

Though some anticipation it was an April Fools’ joke, Nintendo had affairs to actualize a alternation of video amateur based on The Joy of Painting. Unfortunately, the activity ran into assembly problems appealing aboriginal on, so we’ll never apperceive what ability accept been.

In 2001, Bob Ross Inc. media administrator Joan Kowalski told The New York Times how bodies about seemed ashamed to accept that Ross’s articulation was the absolute band-aid to insomnia. “It’s funny to allocution to these people,” she said. ”Because they anticipate they’re the alone ones who watch to booty a nap. Bob knew about this. Bodies would appear up to him and say, ‘I don’t appetite to aching your feelings, but you’ve been putting me to beddy-bye for 10 years.’ He’d adulation it.”

Even today, Ross has become an ASMR star: On the ASMR cilia on Reddit, “Bob Ross” is listed as a accepted trigger. A video of Ross painting a abundance has a amazing 7.65 actor views, with others consistently before 2 or 3 actor views. Of course, not all of those are ASMR viewers, but a ascent online attendance suggests they absolutely deserve some of the credit.

In a 1991 account with The New York Times, Ross claimed he’d fabricated over 30,000 paintings back he was an 18-year-old stationed in Alaska with the Air Force. Yet he was not one to militarist his own work. So what happened to them? Back Ross died of lymphoma in 1995, best of his paintings either concluded up in the easily of alms or PBS.

“One of the questions that I apprehend over and over and over is, ‘What do we do with all these paintings we do on television?’ Best of these paintings are donated to PBS stations beyond the country,” he said. “They bargain them off, and they accomplish a blessed blade with ‘em. So if you’d like to accept one, get in blow with your PBS station, account … we accord them to stations all over the country to advice them out with their fundraisers.”

The actuality that Ross didn’t try and about-face a accumulation from his own assignment doesn’t beggarly that you can’t acquisition one for sale. At one point, added than a dozen of his paintings hit the atramentous bazaar back accession blanket 13 advertence paintings from Ross’s van during the show’s added season.

In the aboriginal 1990s, Ross was attractive to annex out from art and had an abstraction for a kids’ appearance alleged Bob’s World, area he planned to go out into attributes and advise kids about wildlife.

What if she knew that you secretly wished that she'd come and fuck you every night after your man went to sleep? What would you do if she crawled into your bed one night while man was out late working, and told you that she knew everything? What would you do if your woman suggested that you and her should fuck just once, just once to make those unnatural feelings go away?           Michael Snoyman: Proposal: Stack Code of Conduct      Cache   Translate Page

Technical disagreement is not only an inevitable part of software development and community building. It is a necessary and healthy component thereof. Respectful conversations around technical trade-offs are vital to improving software. And these conversations need to be handled with proper care.

I have failed at this in the past, and I’ve apologized for having done so. I’ve strived to do better since. I have encouraged—and continue to encourage—my friends, colleagues, and fellow developers to do the same, and I believe it has been successful.

I think the other extreme—avoiding all discussions of disagreements—is actively harmful. And unfortunately, I see significant confusion in the general Haskell community around what is and is not an acceptable form of technical disagreement.

Outside of my position on the Core Libraries Committee, I do not hold any official position in the leadership of Haskell. I’ve written open source libraries and educational material. I’ve worked on and maintained build tooling. I run a team of Haskell engineers at FP Complete. None of those positions grant me any authority to demand compliance from individuals with any code of conduct.

That said, at many points in the past, I have reached out to individuals whom I’ve been told (or saw myself) were behaving in a non-ideal way. I’ve attempted to remedy those situations privately wherever possible, and have on rare occasions asked people to discontinue such behavior publicly.

I’ve tried to keep this process informal because, as mentioned, I’m not any official authority. The exception to this would be my leadership at FP Complete, but I have a strong policy of avoiding the usage of my position to force those reporting to me to behave a certain way. I do not believe it is appropriate for me to leverage what essentially comes to someone’s livelihood to demand their compliance with my wishes.

There’s been a slow burn of public discussion over the years that has made me consider making a more formal process. But recently, I had a “straw that broke the camel’s back” moment. Someone I like and respect expressed opinions that I think are antithetical to healthy community growth. I won’t call anyone out or refer to those discussions, I’m just explaining why I’m doing this now.

My proposal

I will not in any way claim to have an authority position for the Haskell community. As a result, I’m not going to make any statement for the Haskell community. As the founder of the Stack project, I think I have more of a right (and responsibility) to speak for that project. So I’m going to refer here to the Haskell Stack community. I’m hesitant to do so given that it may be seen as divisive, but I believe the alternative—trying to speaking for the entire Haskell community—is inappropriate. My intent is not to be divisive.

I also have no ability to enforce any kind of behavior on Stack users or contributors. Stack is open source: no matter what statements I make, anyone can use it. I could ask the rest of the maintainer team to block pull requests from specific people, but I believe that’s also overstepping my authority, and so I won’t be doing it.

Instead, I intend to publish two documents, following interaction with people interested in engaging with me on this process. Those two documents will be:

  • A code of conduct. I do not intend to write one myself, but instead use a standard, “off the shelf” CoC. I did this about a year ago for Yesod, and it worked out well.
  • A recommended communication guide. This is something I do intend to write myself, with feedback from others. I intend to write this as an open source project, on a Github repo, accepting issues and pull requests. I intend this to address specific concerns of how the communication I’ve been involved with has broken down.

I am not demanding anything of anyone here. I’m not expecting anyone in other communities (whether within Haskell or outside of it) to participate or change their behavior. And as stated, I’m not willing or able to demand changes from within the Stack community.

What I am hoping is that by clarifying these points:

  • People unsure of how to communicate in certain situations have some clarity
  • We have some better ideas of how to communicate on sensitive technical topics
  • If someone within the Stack community is seen as misbehaving, there’s a mechanism to politely and confidentially raise the issue, and hopefully have the situation improved

Next steps

I’ve created a Github repo. This repo is on my personal Github account, not commercialhaskell, fpco, or haskell. Again, this is my own personal set of content. I encourage others to participate if they feel invested in the topic. I’m considering having a sign-up sheet for the repo after we have a first version, so that people can state that:

  • They’ve reviewed a certain version of the repo
  • They agree with what it says
  • They will strive to follow its recommendations

What to avoid

We’ll get into far more details in that repo itself, but since I anticipate this blog post itself kicking off some discussion, I’m going to make some requests right now:

  • Avoid ad hominems. (Yes, I’ve made mistakes here in the past.) This applies both to someone’s personal history, and to any organizations they are members of, or who they are friendly with.
  • Avoid offensive language. This is actually more complicated than it seems; one of the ways I’ve upset people is my highly sarcastic-by-nature communication style. I’ve worked hard on tamping that down. I point this out because what’s offensive to one person may be normal to others. This is especially true in a global community.
  • We will inevitably have to address some old behavior to know what to include in our recommendations. This is not an invitation to air grievances, as tempting as that may be for some people. Keep the comments non-personal, speak in general terms, and try to avoid any grandstanding. This will be a tough line to walk. But a simple example:
    • Good: “I’ve seen people discredit some people’s opinion because of who their friends are, I believe we should address that in the guidelines.”
    • Bad: “Two months ago, in this Reddit thread, person X said Y about Z. This is horrible, and X needs to either apologize or be removed from the community. They need to be mentioned by name in the guidelines as an offender.”

This is my first time trying to have a discussion quite like this, and I’m guessing the first time many people involved will be participating in one. As one final note, I’d like to request people make an assumption of good will. Mistakes will be made, but we can try to minimize those mistakes, and move on from them when they occur.

Since El Jefe, el muy viejo sargento de la fuerza aérea, has been waxing poetic with pictures of Fall in the Far North East, I thought it best to counter with "yeah, well, 'bout 3 weeks too late!"  The Fall Foliage was rather muted as we sailed the St Lawrence.

But, even a retired fighter pilot and a retired MSgt don't can't reschedule Mother Nature.

Or even moderate her.
Pedernales River near our place.  This is LOW water compared to the Llano River north of us.

Our Stock Pond, a day after the rain stopped. The far side is about 15' deep

However, once the flooding ended down here and the ark came ashore, we were treated to some fall foliage of our own

Our Chinese Pistach Tree is showing its colors quite nicely.  That's our guest house in the background, it will figure later in the post.

So....Fall?  Check.  In the 40's in the morning.  70's in the evening.  Just about perfection especially with the Fall Back aspect of DST.  Much nicer driving in when the sun's up.  Makes the deer easier to see.

As I mentioned last week, the Juvat clan was headed into some major course changes in the ensuing week.
9 g's will turn you around in a hurry, I'd estimate this weeks changes at about 13 g's. Source

Or for you nautical types out there. (You know who you are.)

Coming about Sir! Source

The week started Sunday with Dinner.  Last chance for the gang to get together and wish Little Juvat and his Bride "Bon Voyage".  So we did it up pretty well.

From L to R: DIL, Little J, My Niece, her new son, her Daughter, her Husband, My Sister, Mrs J and some dopey old Fighter Pilot.

Carnitas was the dish, some beer and wine was consumed and a good time was had.  After dinner we adjourned down to the Guest House where some Oak was consumed in the creation of a dessert I'd never heard of prior (S'Mores,  evidently I've led a deprived life never having been a girl scout.)

Did I mention that my phone died in New York City and with it, all my pictures from Boston, Newport and NYC?

So, I'm playing with my new one.  Yes....I went to the Dark Side.  I contributed to the Steve Jobs foundation.  Little Juvat having advised me there was an app that would allow us to communicate directly from his new duty station.

So, my photographic talents still need practice.  Yes, that is my stockinged foot, a glass of single malt scotch and a marshmallow roaster.  My blood sugar was not within acceptable parameters the following morning.  Mea Culpa!

Tuesday, Little Juvat and DIL and my Granddog, Tex, loaded up and drove to Houston.  Wednesday, they blasted off for the Sandbox. Thursday we get confirmation that all had arrived safely.

Tex, resting comfortably on the cool quiet floor of their apartment.
So, that change in course succeeded.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, Mrs J's change in course is a bit more convoluted.  We have to move out of her store.

Did I mention I LOATHE moving?  I've moved (defined as changing zip codes for mailing address) something like 50 times in my life.  That's a lot, but do you know why I LOATHE moving?

It has precipitated every single time.

This time was no different.  We knocked off at about 1900 on Tuesday, 2100 on Wednesday  and Mrs J finished up the last load on Thursday AM.  Final Clearance sales cleared out most of the inventory, quite a few of the racks and other equipment went to St Vinny's and most of the rest was donated to a local children's home.

Some of it however made it home.  Where I'm sure it will mate and reproduce in a manner that will make rabbits blush, consuming all available space in our house.  Millennia from now, archaeologists will discover my remains under it all and say "What a terrible way for a fighter pilot to be buried."

But so it is.

This weekend was our first together in a long time, vacation's excepted.  Suffice it to say we have some adjustments to make.  Our Battle Rhythm is not coordinated yet.

Did I mention that our refrigerator took this moment to croak?  Freezes everything hard as a rock.  Lowes delivered the new one today.  Some genius mis-measured the gap.  Said genius then had to drive back down to Lowes and order another.  This time having measured the gap at least 14 times with Mrs J's supervision on the last 5.

It'll be delivered on Veterans day.  But the floor it will rest on is clean.

Wednesday, I put my retirement papers in. Crickets......Which is fine by me.  I'll spend the last two months doing what I know needs to be done and training my replacement.  However, I'm not sure she's going to stay either.  She's taken some short notice time offs recently.

Some biblical saying about "reaping what you sow", comes to mind.

Friday Night finally arrived and Mrs J, my Sister and I went to "The Club" for a light dinner and some wine.  Rather Nice!

Sarge,  the band was our age, playing 60's and 70's rock.  The Music was great, but the vocalist had a very high pitched voice, almost a falsetto, which detracted.  That having been said, the crowd was entertained and the band had fun.

Maybe a retirement option, Neh?  Keep up the Drum practice.

So, all in all....The Juvat family got through Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes week with flying colors.

5 Best Diabetes Apps to Track Blood Sugar, Calculate Food, and Write Logbooks
By Mihir Patkar,
Make Use Of, 30 October 2018.

About 425 million people in the world have diabetes, with 30 million in the US itself. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or you have lived with diabetes for years, these apps and resources can help you take care of yourself.

There are a few essentials to diabetes management that most of the top apps cover. For example, they will monitor blood sugar, create a logbook of your insulin dosage, track meals, and so on. Even if they’re sounding similar, try out the different apps because you never know which one is perfect for you.

Warning: When it comes to any medical topic, it’s important that you don’t rely solely on websites like MakeUseOf, or search for medial info online. Instead, you need to seek the help of medical professionals who can guide you. Based on the doctor’s advice, use the information in our article to make the best choices for you.

1. MySugr: The Best Diabetes Management App

MySugr (Android, iOS) is the most recommended app for diabetics today, and a huge hit among Reddit communities about health. It has all the features you would need from a diabetes tracker.

The app is mainly a logger for blood sugar, medicines, meals, and other data. It’s a simple matter of keying in the data every time you do any diabetes-related activity, like checking your sugar level. The app includes reminders to check blood sugar so that you don’t forget about the task or about filling the data.

The ease of use is what sets MySugr apart from the rest. It’s easy to understand how to add things to the app. It’s easy to see your data in the form of charts. The app even distills it into simple English for you.

MySugr also has several other features, like a bolus calculator, which figures out how much of an insulin dose you should take. But the free version of the app only lets you calculate this five times before paying for future calculations. Try it out and see if such features are worth paying for.

Download: MySugr for Android | iOS (Free)

2. Diabetes:M: Easy App for New Patients

As easy as MySugr is, it’s a little sad that it puts the bolus calculator behind a paywall. For those who are newly diagnosed with diabetes, figuring out the right insulin dosage is a major struggle. Diabetes:M (Android, iOS) is an all-in-one app that makes life easier for new diabetics.

The logbook tracks all your data, especially the glucose level, at multiple points of the day. You’ll need to add it manually, of course. This is helpful for the bolus calculator too.

To figure out the right insulin dose, you’ll need to add what you’re eating, how much you’re eating, and the measured blood glucose. Diabetes:M uses a database of food products with pre-determined levels of carbs, proteins, fats, and calories. It’s not perfect, but it’s decent enough, much like how fitness apps count calories. Once it has the data, it will calculate the best insulin dose.

Using it for the bolus calculator also has the additional benefit that you track everything you are eating, which is always useful for a doctor. You can view that data in the form of simple charts for free on the phone. But if you want to export them into Excel or PDF for the doctor, you’ll need to buy the premium version of Diabetes:M.

3. Center Health: Smart AI for Diabetes-Related Warnings

wpsD632.tmp

Center Health (Web, Android, iOS) is fairly new on the market and so it has bugs and issues to fix, but with time, it could end up becoming the best app for diabetes management. It has everything that MySugr and Diabetes:M offer, but adds two more elements.

The one you should care about is Aria, a smart AI to analyze your logbook and warn you of trends. It’s more than just a reminder. For example, it will send you alerts when the injection you took might lead to you being hypoglycemic. Or it will look for patterns in your usage and point out when something is off. These are the types of things that might one day help AI diagnose health issues.

The other part that makes Center Health impressive is an add-on glucometer called the Nano, which plugs into your phone. The glucometer tests your blood sugar level and records it directly in the app. You no longer need to log it each time. But of course, this is a paid gadget, and you pay for the strips too.

Center Health also does one other thing right that we love: it plays nice with other apps. Whether you use Dexcom, Medtronic, Fitbit, Google Fit, Apple Health, or any other system, Center Health supports all of them to ensure your data is tracked and synced across platforms.

4. AADE’s Checklists and Guides: Printouts to Manage Your Diabetes

wpsC48B.tmp

The American Association of Diabetes Educators (Web) is largely meant for medical professionals seeking to help patients manage the disease. But the site has a few resources for the patients directly, and they’re invaluable. There are two pages you should check.

The AADE Self-Care Behaviors page is a series of guides for people living with diabetes. The guides are divided into Healthy Eating, Being Active, Monitoring, Taking Medication, Problem Solving, Reducing Risks, and Healthy Coping. Go through each for valuable information that you can trust.

Then, check the Tools and Resources page. The AADE has a series of checklists and handouts to navigate common diabetic issues. This includes everything from medicinal checklists to printouts for healthy holiday eating. These small steps will help in living a better life.

We recommend you always seek out a medical professional for health advice, or only refer to trusted medical organizations like the AADE. If you have a small query that you don’t want to bother a doctor for, then here’s how to safely research health issues online.

5. Diabetes Daily: The Best Forum for Diabetes Discussion and Help

wps5CB5.tmp

With any chronic disease, it’s best to get yourself a support group for the long haul. Seek help in real life, and seek help online through communities and forums. Diabetes Daily (Web) has made a name for itself as one of the best forums for diabetics.

There are different sub-forums to discuss the different types of diabetes, as well as specific parts about the experience, such as daily living factors, complications, non-traditional treatments, money, and insurance, etc. Hop on, be polite, and follow the general rules of asking strangers for help on the internet. You’ll gain some cheerleaders and supporters in no time.

Apart from the forum, the Diabetes Daily website also has essential information about the disorder. You can read the latest news about things related to diabetes, get beginner’s guides and resources, and plenty of information related to diabetic diets.

Make Sure You’re Eating Right

Apart from monitoring your health statistics, the biggest daily task of living with diabetes is managing your food intake. What you eat, and when you eat it, is going to affect your health more than any other aspect.

That’s why we put together a simple guide to cooking for diabetics. Here, you will find websites and apps that give you diabetic-friendly recipes, as well as YouTube channels and tips. Don’t miss this one.

At BlizzCon 2018 last week, Blizzard announced that its shooter Overwatch is getting Ashe, a new playable character, or hero as they're known. Ashe is the 29th addition to Overwatch's expanding roster of heroes.

With Overwatch being over two years old, its heroes form a large part of the community discussion. Some can be too effective while others are perceived to be far from useful. Both tend to ruin the experience of game that's built on the checks and balances of one hero's abilities being able to be countered by another's.

But with 29 heroes and counting, Blizzard has on occasion gone back to the drawing board and reworked certain heroes from the ground up to ensure they remain effective without players feeling like they're up against insurmountable odds. We've seen this with popular heroes such as Symmetra and Mercy with varying degrees of success. Gadgets 360 spoke to Chacko Sonny, Production Director on Overwatch to find out what makes the game's heroes tick.

First up, we had to ask how does the Overwatch team decides on which heroes to add to the game.

"Some people felt Brigitte was a response to [counter] high mobility characters and that certainly would be the case," Sonny tells us of a past addition to the Overwatch roster before stating that game balance wasn't the main reason for bringing Ashe into Overwatch. "In this case with Ashe, she was driven by a cinematic design we all love. We thought the kit, the abilities and the weapon really resonated with us so much that there was not much deliberation on what she should be doing, it was very clear that Bob [her robot sidekick] was something we wanted in the game."

Explaining further, Sonny says that the Overwatch team has a variety of potential heroes to choose from to reveal and add to the game. Though the thought process behind them isn't the same.

"There are five or six different hero prototypes being worked on at any given time," he says. "Some are driven by ideas like 'this would be a great addition to this class' and other times its driven by a cool sketch that we want to turn into [a hero]. I don't want to present a picture that they're all derived in the same way. The inspiration comes from many different places and there's a lot discussion at the time, figuring out what the next hero is and what's the right thing for the game at that point in time."

On that note, we asked if there was a definite hero count in mind for Overwatch. The game launched with 21 heroes and has added eight more since Sonny claims that the studio is driven by what heroes add to the gameplay rather than the sheer number of them at a player's disposal.

"They've all introduced something new and changed the way people play the game," he says. "There have been some cases where we tweak some things post-release, but we think there's some fertile ground to introduce some new hero designs. I know certainly with some of the prototypes that I've been playing recently, I'm super excited for what's coming up."

And while Sonny could not tell us what new heroes are in the works, he did reveal how the Overwatch team uses community feedback and user data to make crucial changes to Overwatch such as reworking one of the game's more effective heroes despite the data suggesting nothing needed to be done.

"I think the best example was prior to the Symmetra rework," he reminisces. "This was one of the stats Geoff Goodman [Overwatch Lead Designer] always gives, was that Symmetra was one of the highest win-rate characters out there so if you're just looking at the data you'd think nothing needs to be done with her, she should be fine."

The data however, is just one piece of the puzzle. Player feedback suggested that Symmetra wasn't as versatile a hero for higher skill play or had much utility outside specific areas of a match.

"It's ultimately a combination of data that we look at, watching trends, understanding how players are using certain characters and what's happening with them as well as their feedback," Sonny says.

It's not just fan feedback either. In fact the Overwatch team depends on several sources of feedback to iterate and improve upon the game.

"We do our own internal play tests twice a day, the entire team," he reveals. "We also have an internal QA group, a group of QA that sits with us and another that has their own space, and there's so much we get from places like Reddit to get feedback from the community on what's working and what's not. That process of balancing the game is something that happens continuously and at times it can be very different from the data."

That said, we wondered why it takes so long for certain hero changes to roll out if the Overwatch team has access to a wealth of information. The answer, it turns out, lies in its ever expanding roster.

"The game has 29 heroes and so the permutations and complexity associated with making a change to one of them requires a lot of iteration around testing and understanding the impact one change might have to the game," he says. "It would not be sufficient for us to make a change and immediately put it in the build and push it out without us very clearly understanding what it does to the rest of the community."

When a change is ready for public consumption, it's put onto the game's public test realm (PTR) for initial feedback before being rolled out to all. Sonny elaborates that this is necessary to ensure any alterations to the game don't have a negative effect.

"We always try to push our changes early to the PTR," he says. "By the time it gets to PTR we've done a ton of testing on our own to be confident it's not going to do weird things. There times we have pushed it out publicly where we got different feedback from the public versus what the team has experienced. It's just a question of exactly what's involved in ensuring that change is not destructive."

The conversation moves on to Overwatch's game modes. At its core, the game remains a six versus six competitive experience, though the developers have experimented with cooperative player versus enemy (PvE) modes for special events based on certain story arcs such as Uprising and Retribution. Expect the trend to continue due to how popular they are with the game's fan base as well as being "really interesting design challenges" for the Overwatch team.

"We've been very pleased with the response to our PvE events, some of our highest engagement are for events like Uprising and Retribution," he says. "We get a clear sense not just from our fans but from those on our team that PvE has long legs. It's super deep and is a different kind of design experience too. We spend so much time thinking about what the six versus experience is and how these characters bounce off each other. With PvE we wonder about where enemies stream in from, how drop ships enter. All these things are really interesting design challenges."

On the topic of Overwatch challenges, we wondered what would happen if Bob, the robot sidekick of new hero Ashe were to be introduced to the game as a hero himself. In the game, Bob is Ashe's ultimate ability - on being summoned he tears opponents down with machine gun fire from his arms. In fact, Bob can be healed and hacked by others and is even treated as a player hero when contesting or capturing objectives in Overwatch's game modes. If Bob were to be added to a game as a playable character, would Ashe's ultimate ability change?

Sonny did not confirm nor deny Bob's addition to the Overwatch roster, plainly stating that "Bob is now her ultimate."

On being pressed further, he left us with this. "In your hypothetical scenario it would probably have to."

Rock, Paper, Shotgun: Bethesda are “actively tracking” some gnarly cheats, exploits and more in the Fallout 76 beta      Cache   Translate Page

War may never change, but a lot can happen in a public beta test, and those braving Fallout 76‘s wasteland early have found some things in need of changing. Bethesda may have warned that there were “spectacular” bugs to be found, but few were expecting this laundry list collated on Reddit – client-side modding, unsecured connections and worse. Also the significant issue of player speed being tied to framerate, (thanks, Eurogamer) – players with uncapped framerates can zoom off by staring at their own feet. Bethesda have partially acknowledged these issues in a statement to Eurogamer today.

The Science Behind Kissing (Why Do We Kiss)
Who do human beings kiss? What makes you want to kiss somebody? What is the scientific explanation behind kissing? We all remember that first kiss. A person who made us feel special, the butterflies in our stomach as we lean forward to touch lips and share a moment of intimacy. This human ritual of touching lips and kissing has been around for generations, and it has different meanings depending on the culture and context. Everything from love, passion, romance, to attraction. But we also share 80 million bacteria when we kiss each other! Wow, that’s quite an exchange for a moment of passion. So what’s it all about? That’s what we’ll be looking at in this episode of The Infographics Show: Why Do People Kiss?           Engadget RSS Feed: Ubisoft sanitizes 'Rainbow Six: Siege' to expand its audience      Cache   Translate Page

Ubisoft wants to bring Rainbow Six: Siege to new Asian markets, and it's sterilizing some parts of the game in the process -- regardless of where you live. It's prepping a Year 3 Season 4 update to the global version of the game that removes numerous references to gambling, sex and certain violent elements. Slot machines, neon stripper signs, blood patches and even skull imagery has been replaced with 'safer' references, even in in the activity feed for kills. There will be a separate build, Ubisoft added on Reddit, but it'll be region-locked even if you try to use a VPN.

QAnon Conspiracy Theorists Warned That Antifa Would Ruin the Election. Mockery Ensued.      Cache   Translate Page

Remember when there was supposed to be an antifa coup last year? The extremely online far-right conspiracy-theory set has spent the past several days warning that anti-fascist activists would once again threaten democracy, this time by wreaking havoc at the polls.

The current idea appears to have gotten its start, at least in part, from Q, the mysterious online figure at the center of the stubbornly persistent QAnon conspiracy theory, which claims that the Mueller investigation is really an effort for President Donald Trump to arrest a vast Democratic pedophile ring. On Sunday, just two days before Election Day, Q warned that antifa could show up to ruin Election Day, writing in one of his or her (or their) regular missives, “If you witness members of ANTIFA or any other people or organizations stationed at ‘key’ voter locations making threats or attempting to use scare tactics [voter intimidation] please contact local authorities immediately and report the incident(s).” It went on to detail how there may be buses dropping off antifa members with a guide, or how there could be “voter prevention” activities afoot, such as odd behavior from officials or faulty voting machines. It urged QAnons to be prepared to take photos and videos of suspicious activity. On Monday, multiple Q followers posted videos to YouTube about the antifa warning. One is 30 minutes long and has racked up nearly 57,000 views. Another, at 19 minutes, has been watched more than 44,000 times.

The same day, a post on the pro-Trump Reddit board The_Donald offered a PSA. “If you see ANTIFA stationed at key voting locations trying to intimidate voters call the authorities,” it read. “Watch for any suspicious activity with staff, officials, machines, unusual groupings of people being dropped off on buses w/guide and/or instructor. See something Say something.” It closely paraphrases the Q post. Redditors seem to be taking it all rather seriously, imploring others to report if they see any problems and offering advice on what to do. “Call the authorities and get photos and video,” one user suggested. “Back all of it up on a PC and then to a thumb drive if you can. Do not keep politically sensitive things in ‘my documents’ or any of the presets and do not rely on the cloud.”

It’s true that the far right does have something to fear from antifa, and not just because some antifa activists have resorted to violence against white supremacists at their demonstrations. People affiliated with the decentralized group have been known to lurk in private alt-right Facebook groups and chatrooms in order to keep tabs on white supremacists. While members of the far right might imagine antifa as their left-wing equivalent, it’s a false equivalency, since antifa isn’t a hate group but rather aims to weaken and disband hate groups. But the idea that it would cause trouble on Election Day is not only inconsistent with its purpose; there’s also been absolutely no evidence that it’s happening.

Which makes the way others have apparently reacted to this far-right antifa hysteria just perfect. “Walked into my polling place wearing a baby and they gave me a 2nd ballot for him. Neat! Anyway off to join my ANTIFA comrades in intimidating the elderly,” reads one tweet from Tuesday. Another tweet from early Tuesday afternoon is even funnier: “just got back from my polling site where antifa had painted a tunnel on the wall and put a sign that said ‘Republicans vote here’. my nose is critically bruised; cant believe chuck schumer, the leader of antifa, would allow this fraud.”

If this was a roast of the QAnons’ dire warnings, it was an apt one. “Wow! I’m not even a citizen and they let me vote! They even gave me a ride to the polling place and some money for doing it! Antifa is alright with me! #ElectionDay #IVoted #VoteBlue #BlueWave,” one read.
Another, from a student-run Democratic Socialist club, reads, “a big thank you to all the antifa running my polling place today! thanks to ya’ll my grandmother was able to cast a vote for the green party from her dead husband.” There are dozens of these.

Look around and you’ll see some Twitter users wondering earnestly where the reports of antifa election meddling are, with a few perhaps even spoiling for a fight. And no one should forget that Q supporters have been known to take things too far in the past. In June, one adherent drove an armored truck to the Hoover Dam with two rifles, blocking traffic while demanding a copy of the “OIG Report,” which Q had promised would bring down the Democrats. But the report in question was already out, and it didn’t really hurt Democrats at all.

So for now, it makes sense to take the QAnons’ dire warnings with exactly as much seriousness as they deserve: none.

Dropbox Introduces Extensions [Video]      Cache   Translate Page

Dropbox has announced the launch of Dropbox Extensions, a series of new integrations that let users start workflows from within the platform.

These no-fuss workflows are only possible because we’ve built deep product partnerships with leading productivity companies that include Adobe, Autodesk, DocuSign, Vimeo, airSlate, HelloSign, Nitro, Smallpdf, and Pixlr. We want users to have the ability to move fluidly from one task to the next without breaking their flow. It should be just as easy to use a combination of tools and apps as it is to use the same suite of tools from a legacy provider.
