SWIFT says suspending some Iranian banks' access to messaging system      Cache   Translate Page
The Belgium-based SWIFT financial messaging service said on Monday it is suspending some unspecified Iranian banks’ access to its messaging system in the interest of the stability and integrity of the global financial system. In a brief statement, SWIFT made no mention of U.S. sanctions coming back into effect on some Iranian financial institutions on Monday as part of U.S. President Donald Trump’s effort to force Iran to curtail its nuclear, missile and regional activities. The SWIFT statement said suspending the Iranian banks access to the messaging system was a "regrettable" step but was "taken in the interest of the stability and integrity of the wider global financial system." Having abandoned the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, Trump is trying to cripple Iran's oil-dependent economy and force Tehran to quash not only its nuclear ambitions and its ballistic missile program but its support for militant proxies in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and other parts of the Middle East.           UPDATE: U.S. targets Iran with fresh round of sanctions; EU seeks to protect its firms      Cache   Translate Page
The United States on Monday restored sanctions targeting Iran's oil, banking and transportation sectors and threatened more action to stop its "outlaw" policies, steps the Islamic Republic called economic warfare and vowed to defy. The sanctions cover 50 Iranian banks and subsidiaries, more than 200 persons and vessels in its shipping sector, and targets Tehran's national airline, Iran Air, and more than 65 of its aircraft. The measures are part of a wider effort by U.S. President Donald Trump to curb Tehran's missile and nuclear programs and diminish the Islamic Republic's influence in the Middle East, notably its support for proxies in Syria, Yemen and Lebanon. Trump's moves target Iran's main source of revenue - its oil exports - as well as its financial sector, essentially making the 50 Iranian banks and subsidiaries off limits to foreign banks on pain of losing access to the U.S. financial system. The administration said it had toughened the sanctions by roughly 300 new designations
U.S. allows eight importers to keep buying Iran oil for now      Cache   Translate Page
The United States said on Friday it will temporarily allow eight importers to keep buying Iranian oil when it re-imposes sanctions on Monday to try to force Iran to curb its nuclear, missile and regional activities. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who announced the decision, did not name the eight, which he referred to as "jurisdictions," a term that might include importers such as Taiwan which the United States does not regard as a country. Having abandoned the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, U.S. President Donald Trump is trying to cripple Iran’s oil-dependent economy and force Tehran to quash not only its nuclear ambitions and its ballistic missile program but its support for militant proxies in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and other parts of the Middle East. On Twitter, in a message designed to emphasize his "maximum pressure" policy toward Iran, Trump included a photograph of himself modeled on a entertainment industry poster with the headline: "Sanctions are coming November 5." Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman laid the foundation stone for seven strategic projects, including a nuclear research reactor, the Saudi SPA news agency reported on Monday. The crown prince also laid the foundation stone for the aircraft manufacturing plant, the publication said. Riyadh seeks to create its own nuclear power plant with two reactors, which will produce from 2 to 3.2 gigawatts of electricity to satisfy the country's demand for electric power. Saudi Arabia, just like any other newcomer in the nuclear industry, sees research reactors as the first step towards the "big" nuclear power industry. Research reactors, in particular, are needed to carry out nuclear medicine projects, to produce of radioisotopes for industry, as well as to train qualified personnel. In February, Russia's Rosatom has submitted an application to participate in a tender for the construction of two NPP units in Saudi Arabia.           Trump boasts about best ever sanctions against Iran, many countries given 'temporary' waivers as new sanctions go into effect      Cache   Translate Page
Touted by Donald Trump as the "strongest" ever imposed by the US, the embargo on Iranian oil has just gone into effect. Washington, however, had to grant several waivers to countries that refused to cut economic ties with Tehran. The sweeping package of sanctions, targeting Tehran's energy, finance and shipping sectors, went into effect November 5. This marks a full reversal of whatever small relief was given to Iranian companies and individuals by Washington following the historic international nuclear deal (JCPOA) in 2015. Even though the US administration, and the president personally, repeatedly trumpeted the embargo as a great achievement at numerous public events in the run-up to midterm elections, Washington had to make significant concessions, as it failed to rally enough international support for its bold move.

A Catastrophic CIA Failure      Cache   Translate Page
Michael Walsh wants us to understand that the Obama administration was in charge of the CIA and national security when intelligence operatives around the world were exposed, compromised and even murdered.

No one cares about the story because the story exposes the rank dereliction of the Obama administration and because it is too complicated for most people to understand.

Walsh points the finger of blame:

A rollup of networks across the world -- an event that began in Iran, where the Obama administration would soon enough be negotiating its much sought-after "nuclear deal framework" -- and ended with numerous deaths is the kind of thing of which intelligence nightmares and national-security disasters are made. One's first instinct is to look back and see who was CIA director during that period: Leon Panetta (Feb. 2009-June 2011); Michael Morell (acting director, July-Sept. 2011); David Petraeus (Sept. 2011-Nov. 2012); Morell again (acting, Nov. 2012-March 2013; and finally John Brennan, who served out the remainder of the Obama administration.

The story was reported by Yahoo! News. Note that everyone familiar with the events describe them as a catastrophic failure:

In 2013, hundreds of CIA officers — many working nonstop for weeks — scrambled to contain a disaster of global proportions: a compromise of the agency’s internet-based covert communications system used to interact with its informants in dark corners around the world. Teams of CIA experts worked feverishly to take down and reconfigure the websites secretly used for these communications; others managed operations to quickly spirit assets to safety and oversaw other forms of triage.

“When this was going on, it was all that mattered,” said one former intelligence community official. The situation was “catastrophic,” said another former senior intelligence official.

It was about the websites that CIA used to communicate with operatives around the world.

From around 2009 to 2013, the U.S. intelligence community experienced crippling intelligence failures related to the secret internet-based communications system, a key means for remote messaging between CIA officers and their sources on the ground worldwide. The previously unreported global problem originated in Iran and spiderwebbed to other countries, and was left unrepaired — despite warnings about what was happening — until more than two dozen sources died in China in 2011 and 2012 as a result, according to 11 former intelligence and national security officials.

CIA knew it and did nothing to repair the problem:

More than just a question of a single failure, the fiasco illustrates a breakdown that was never properly addressed. The government’s inability to address the communication system’s insecurities until after sources were rolled up in China was disastrous. “We’re still dealing with the fallout,” said one former national security official. “Dozens of people around the world were killed because of this.”

It all began in 2009:

One of the largest intelligence failures of the past decade started in Iran in 2009, when the Obama administration announced the discovery of a secret Iranian underground enrichment facility — part of Iran’s headlong drive for nuclear weapons. Angered about the breach, the Iranians went on a mole hunt, looking for foreign spies, said one former senior intelligence official.

The mole hunt wasn’t hard, in large part, because the communications system the CIA was using to communicate with agents was flawed. Former U.S. officials said the internet-based platform, which was first used in war zones in the Middle East, was not built to withstand the sophisticated counterintelligence efforts of a state actor like China or Iran. “It was never meant to be used long term for people to talk to sources,” said one former official. “The issue was that it was working well for too long, with too many people. But it was an elementary system.”

But a sense of confidence in the system kept it in operation far longer than was safe or advisable, said former officials. The CIA’s directorate of science and technology, which is responsible for the secure communications system, “says, ‘our s***’s impregnable,’ but it’s obviously not,” said one former official.

CIA officials knew about the problem and chose not to believe it, until Iran started arresting and executing CIA spies:

By 2010, however, it appears that Iran had begun to identify CIA agents. And by 2011,  Iranian authorities dismantled a CIA spy network in that country, said seven former U.S. intelligence officials. (Indeed, in May 2011, Iranian intelligence officials announced publicly that they had broken up a ring of 30 CIA spies; U.S. officials later confirmed the breach to ABC News, which also reported on a potential compromise to the communications system.)

Iran executed some of the CIA informants and imprisoned others in an intelligence setback that one of the former officials described as “incredibly damaging.” The CIA successfully exfiltrated some of its Iranian sources, said former officials.

At a time when the Obama administration was in full appeasement mode toward Iran, it had no good intelligence from inside the country:

The Iranian compromise led to significantly fewer CIA agents being killed than in China, according to former officials. Still, the events there hampered the CIA’s capacity to collect intelligence in Iran at a critical time, just as Tehran was forging ahead with its nuclear program.

It was an unmitigated catastrophe.

But the events in Iran were not self-contained; they coincided roughly with a similar debacle in China in 2011 and 2012, where authorities rounded up and executed around 30 agents working for the U.S. (the New York Times first reported the extirpation of the CIA’s China sources in May 2017).

U.S. officials believe that Chinese intelligence obtained physical access to the transitional, or temporary, secret communications system used by the CIA to correspond with new, unvetted sources — and broke through the firewall separating it from the main covert communications system, compromising the CIA’s entire asset network in that country, Foreign Policy reported earlier this year.

If you want to know why John Brennan is angry, look at his record.

The United States and the Middle East nations are bracing themselves for the sanctions that will be reimplemented on Iran      Cache   Translate Page
Listen to Today's Program Play

JD: Ken yesterday I got a Twitter from Potus President of the United States Donald Trump he made the statement that the United States was going to re-implement the sanctions on Iran. So I guess now that means that the United States and Middle Eastern forces are going to brace for trouble over these new or renewed Iranian sanctions.

KT: Well it’s certainly possible the Iranians themselves are making a lot of noise about this. They’re calling the United States an illegal power where as they are legal and they are respecting the world order. They claim that we are not because these sanctions have not been approved by the United Nations. But the Iranians also know that they will pay a very high price for any direct attack on US forces in the Middle East.

Now they could attack us indirectly they could for example reinforce those Shabbat militia that I was telling you about in northern Iraq that are outside of Mosul that are in the Nineveh plain. They could also conduct provocative actions along the land bridge into Syria and on to the Lebanese border with Israel. There’s lots of things Iran can do. They have many many military forces throughout the region. I happen to think they’re a little bit over extended but I do not see them launching any kind of direct attack against the US. I think they know very well that the price would be very high.

JD: And that land bridge you’re talking about includes Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon all the way from Iran to the Mediterranean and that’s key for what their plans are for the future.

KT: That’s correct. Absolutely, and they’ve been testing that since last December when they opened it for the first time. We’ve been talking about that regularly here on this broadcast. You don’t hear a lot of people in the national media talk about it but it’s a very important event.

JD: Ken Timmerman and his insights on what Iran’s response may well be as the United States re-implaments the sanctions on the Islamic State of Iran.

We report this information because it is setting the stage for Bible prophecy to be fulfilled.

Remember President Trump withdrew from the Iranian nuclear deal. As of today the United States has applied sanctions once again on Iran. The Middle East nations and the United States are braced for Iran’s reactions. We don’t know what Iran will be willing to do. We do know however that as we move deeper and deeper into the last days Iran will become a major player as foretold by the ancient Jewish prophets Daniel and Ezekiel, that was Daniel 11:44 and Ezekiel 38:5 where Iran is mentioned as Persia.

The stage is set for these prophecies to be fulfilled.

Rakyat Iran Gelar Unjuk Rasa Nasional Mengenang Ambilalihan Kedutaan AS      Cache   Translate Page –Media PressTV berbahasa Inggris melaporkan,” Rakyat Iran menggelar unjuk rasa di seluruh negeri untuk menandai peringatan pengambilalihan kedutaan AS di Teheran tahun 1979.
Demonstran di Teheran berkumpul pada hari Minggu di luar misi diplomatik AS, juga dikenal sebagai "Den of Spionase," meneriakkan slogan-slogan menentang Amerika Serikat.

Demonstrasi serupa diadakan di lebih dari 1.000 kota dan kota di seluruh negara yang luas, dengan peserta meneriakkan "Kematian AS", "Kematian Israel", dan "Hayhat minna az-zilla" (Never to Humiliation).

The Iranian people held a national demonstration to watch the referral of the US embassy

On November 4, 1979, a group of students took over the embassy, which they believed had turned into a espionage center, planning to overthrow the newborn Islamic Republic, and holding 52 American diplomats for 444 days.

The documents found at the mission reinforce claims by revolutionary students that Washington has used the complex to hatch plots against Iran.

The founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, praised the takeover as a "second revolution" after the 1979 Islamic Revolution overthrew the Shah of Iran, which was a close US ally in Iran.

The leader of the Ayatollah Islamic Revolution Sayyid Ali Khamenei said on Saturday that the United States had been trying for the past 40 years to regain control of Iran under the Shah but was unsuccessful.

"There is an important fact here, that in this 40-year challenge, the Americans have lost and the Islamic Republic has won," he said, speaking to a group of students in Tehran.

This year's rally came after the US government decided on Friday to reinstate all revoked sanctions under the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran.

"The aim of America with sanctions is to cripple and hold back the Iranian economy, but the result is that the drive towards self-sufficiency has expanded in this country," Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The chief commander of the Iranian Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) gave a speech in Tehran, saying that the country would defeat US sanctions through resistance.

I agree with the author that the nuclear deal has not lived upto the expectations. But that was bound to happen. For instance, 1999 Kargil between India and Pakistan was after the nuclear tests of the countries.
Comment on How Bad Was Jezebel? by Furienna      Cache   Translate Page
I believe that your comparison between Jezebel and Hitler is awefully interesting, but for a different reason than what you may think: They have only been seen as evil by people after their deaths because... they lost a war. Because if Germany had managed to win the WWII, it would have been much harder for us to judge the Nazis for their actions. There has been some welcome criticism in later years, where it has been shown that the victors were hardly any better than the Nazis: The US treated any Asian-American as a dangerous criminal, not to mention the dropping of nuclear bombs on two Japanese cities. And plenty of German women were raped by Soviet soldiers. But it took us several decades to get even that far, because it has always been true that the victor will write the history of any conflict. Which brings me back to Jezebel. Sure, we can sit here in 2018 AD and feel that she did some horrible things. But what gives us the right to condemn a woman, who had been raised in an old culture with a very different mindset from ours? And furthermore, Elijah and Jehu were just as bad as Jezebel. As a matter of fact, I believe that Jehu had much more blood on his hands than Jezebel ever had. But we're still supposed to see her as the villain and them as the heros. Why? Because (1) Jehu managed to beat Jezebel in a war and was king for 28 years, so he could make sure that all the propaganda made him look good for millennia, and (2) the Books of Kings were written by someone, who believed that Jezebel's faith was objectively wrong, and Elijah's and Jehu's faith was objectively right. It is just as simple as that. It is very much about time that we started to look at these people with less bias, even if that will be hard for anybody who sees the Bible as the holy Word of God. We're looking at a conflict, where everybody was guilty of what we would see as horrible crimes. As a matter of fact, Jezebel might even be less guilty than Elijah and Jehu. Because it's clear that the narrator wanted to see her as an evil shrew, so he could very much have exaggerated and even lied to portray her negatively. And on the other hand, he is very open with that Elijah and Jehu had hundred of people murdered. But that is okay, since God is supposedly on their side anyway.

Remarks by Bill Murphy, Chairman
Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee Inc.
New Orleans Investment Conference
Friday, November 2, 2018

Thanks for taking the time to come by on a bustling Friday night in New Orleans.

What to bring your way of new interest this year was the most puzzling for me than at any other time over the past two decades when first preparing this presentation. Very little has changed over the past year for the precious metals camp except that The Gold Cartel has stepped up their lockdown of the gold and silver markets in the most forceful of fashions. So I thought it might be best to go over the past years and what it ought to portend in the future for gold/silver investors.

But first a bit of a GATA recap as The Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee was set into motion 20 years ago just about now when my colleague Chris Powell responded to my constant complaining about the manipulation of the gold market by various bullion banks.

... Dispatch continues below ...

When you buy bullion through your account, the alliance's network of trusted precious metals dealers launches into action -- and you'll be shown the lowest price for your purchase. Also amazing is the low-cost storage available to you in six non-bank vaults around the world.

Jefferson Financial, promoters of this very conference, had published The Gold Book by my long time friend Frank Veneroso, a consultant to the World Bank and other prestigious organizations. In his book Frank explained that the bullion banks of the world had secretly lent out many thousands of tonnes of physical gold in order to control the gold price. One of his sources for this information was the Bank of England.

Soon after opening my LeMetropoleCafe 20 years ago this past September, the famed hedge fund, Long Term Capital Management, went belly up. They were such a big deal back then their demise threatened the financial system. Mostly because they were short some three or four hundred tonnes of gold (which were lent out to finance other investments) and would have to be covered as part of the liquidation of assets on their books. It then came to my attention that the major bullion banks were collectively selling gold on the Comex to prevent the price from going through $300 an ounce. In essence they were taking the Long Term's gold liability off their books and were making sure they didn't lose money on their new positions. Interestingly enough, the now famous Jim Rickards of the gold world was Long Term's lawyer back then and knows full well what occurred at the time. In addition there were other coinciding events which confirmed the manipulation … Enough to raise a big stink for anyone who could put two and two together.

Anyway, that was two decades ago and my colleague here, Chris Powell, who had become a subscriber to my website, suggested we do something about it. That was how GATA came into being in January of 1999.

What a journey it has been!

We came out of the box on fire.

In February of 1999 I was interviewed by CNBC's Ron Insanna. Course once they heard what GATA had to say that would be the last time we would be on CNBC in the US. In April Dow Jones wrote an extensive story on GATA and presented our views. That was unacceptable to the establishment. How dare they give GATA's discoveries of foul play coverage! Eighteen years later the Wall Street Journal wrote a lengthy front page story about the Fed's gold, but purposely cut GATA completely out of the article, despite lengthy interviews with us.

Then in May of that year I met Congressman James Saxton, head of the Joint Economic Committee, in Washington, who listened intensely. Since then, we met with Speaker of the House at the time, Dennis Hastert. Ironically, he certainly developed a great deal more problems as time passed by than GATA ever had.

Speaker Hastert quickly arranged a meeting with the Subcommittee on Domestic and International Monetary Policy. Over the years ahead we met with very pro-gold advocate Congressman Ron Paul and contacted many other politicians by mail. They all listened intensely. But that is all they did.

Yes, we were off to a very enthusiastic start. Around that time the GATA camp began to contact the gold mining executives to raise funds and garner support. The CEO of Goldcorp, Chris Thompson, sent us $20,000 and we were off to the races. Bobby Godsell, CEO of Anglo-Gold and a major hedger akin to Barrick Gold, was soon shamed to do the same by an ardent GATA follower.

But we soon realized, the task at hand would not be an easy one. We would be taking on the richest and most powerful people in the world. THEY don't like to be messed with and very few people or entities would be willing to take them on. Actually, phrasing it that way is an understatement.

To begin with we soon came to understand the manipulation of the gold market was far larger and more complex than we originally thought. We realized that included in this nefarious activity were other central banks, The Fed, The US Treasury, Exchange Stabilization Fund, and the Bank for International Settlements. AND it included the silver market as well.

How tough would it be to get the gold industry behind GATA to end the price suppression scheme which was hurting THEM so badly?

As far as the gold companies go, this little recap says it all…

* I flew to Vancouver for an arranged meeting Robert Champion de Crespigny, the chairman of Normandy Mining in Australia. After going all that way, he refused to see me.

* The secretary for Newmont Mining's CEO Wayne Murdy returned my email to him saying Newmont never received it. HUH?

* Chris Thompson was to become the CEO of the World Gold Council. When I met him in South Africa at a conference years later, he would not even talk to me.

* And finally Chris, John Embry, and I went to London and met up with the World Gold Council and their new CEO. When we arrived, we had to sign a document that said we were never there. HUH again!

You get the drill. It was going to be an uphill battle recruiting the management of the major gold companies. That said we are very grateful for the financial support we have received from some of the junior/exploration firms.

And, not to be deterred, my colleague CP is making another valiant effort to gain the attention and support of some major gold companies at this very moment.

As far as the politicians go, it is very difficult for them to do anything about the gold price suppression scheme when it is their own government who is responsible for what is going on. The same government which espouses free markets and freedom of speech. Surely part of the rigging scheme is conducted by The Exchange Stabilization Fund. This secretive operation reports only to the President and Secretary of the Treasury and has full, legal authority to do whatever it wishes in the gold and currency markets.

Even the most pro-gold political advocate of all, Congressman Ron Paul will not press very hard about the rigging of the gold price. Chris and I have met him and he is a great guy. But, I will never forget how much work we put into formulating key questions to be asked to a monetary committee way back when, one which was televised. He and his staff requested questions from GATA to be asked. The outspoken congressman just backed down and did not ask one of them.

Then you have the CFTC, the regulatory agency in charge of oversight for the commodities markets. What a farce they are, as most of you know. We have been to Washington and met with them too and then I was able to make a presentation in front of a televised CFTC inquiry into the markets. There were various presentations, all of which were seen by the public. Except mine, which was mysteriously blacked out. You can't make this stuff up, especially when it is all tied together.

The bottom line is this: one of the great lines ever was by Chris when he said the US would rather reveal their nuclear secrets than what they are doing in the gold market. It is that big a deal.

Now, while this has been as frustrating as anything I have taken on in my life, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences imaginable. The people we have met on this journey are the best, some of whom are here now. We have held four international conferences: in Durban, South Africa; Dawson City in the Yukon: right outside of Washington, D.C.; and in London. They all were very successful and the speakers/attendees were awesome.

Yes, while exposing the gold price suppression scheme and making progress to end this rigged farce has been more than aggravating, what we have learned will pay off big time for those who are paying attention. The gold and silver prices have been sent to incredibly low artificial prices. In my opinion the most important thing to know about those prices is that because of what The Gold Cartel has done, they are going to explode in the years ahead.

As a result of The Gold Cartel's antics, numerous investors have fled the sector. Other assets have soared these past many years, while gold and silver have faded and gone nowhere. What should have meant higher prices due to rising budget deficits, surging government debt and zero interest rates have meant nothing.

While gold and silver prices should have taken off, they were battered, and now are incredibly cheap. They should not be here, but they are.

Here is what I think happened over the last 7 plus years.

The Gold Cartel had a plan and this is how they carried it out.

In late 2010 silver began to make its move ... from $16 an ounce to right below $50 at the beginning of May 2011. It was SOME move and IMO engineered by JP Morgan. My colleague CP astutely believes The Gold Cartel wanted to take a more elevated position in the rigging business, but had no physical silver left to help them get the job done. To be fully effective a lousy silver price was needed to confirm a lousy gold price, which is widely regarded as the barometer of US financial market health. As former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker said about gold. "Up is bad, down is good."

So JP Morgan began to buy physical silver, all the way up to the $50 mark. Yes, they were eventually buying high, but that would be insignificant compared to the amount of shorting of derivatives they put on their books as silver was to peak out.

Ted Butler, who covers the silver market thoroughly, is constantly pointing out how JPM took over the short positions of Bear Stearns when that firm blew up. The silver open interest back then in 2008 was around 162,000 contracts. When the silver price began its mega move years later that open interest had fallen to around 133,000 contracts and it was about that level until the very end of the silver move in 2011. It came to my attention after the move that JPM was out of the market. They probably had no short positions, having rid themselves of the Bear Stearns' shorts. Have not heard Ted ever deal with that issue.

So JPM began to sell silver derivatives in size as silver began its approach to $50.

And then they blasted silver for $7 in a day. Stunning. It was some blow to the bull move and it has been downhill ever since. JPM has made a fortune. Yes they bought some now relatively expensive physical silver, but have cleaned up by shorting derivatives at the top of the move in 2011 and ever since then ... many times over their physical holdings. And NOW they had physical silver to belt the price any time they wanted for The Gold Cartel.

That was critical. Mission accomplished.

With JPM (the US Government) having the ability to sell physical silver at will, the price fell below $14 an ounce, below where JPM first took over their short positions from Bear Stearns. And this is key. The silver open interest (the number of longs and shorts in the futures market on the Comex) soared ... to a high of 193,000 for years and then recently it went even more bonkers to 243,000 contracts earlier this year despite the price going into oblivion. This just does not occur in other commodity markets. The norm would be for the open interest to collapse as hedgers on the short side disappear because the prices are too low to hedge and spec longs flee the scene due to lack of interest and expectations. The extraordinarily high silver open interest has been like an anchor around silver's neck for many years now and THE constant sign of excessive suppression.

Interestingly enough, gold did not top out for another six months after silver when it moved above $1900 one month after GATA's London gold conference in August of 2011. A US debt downgrade was the cause for the move of over $250 after our conference. Gold was then blasted lower in the early days of September of that year.

It has been downhill for both metals ever since. Gold and silver could be punished lower in sync now. It seems to me The Gold Cartel forces knew what had to be done to revitalize the US economy and gold and silver had to be put in their place and negate all the fundamental reasons for them to keep going higher by the price action. To repeat, those reasons included enormous budget deficits, soaring government debt, and zero interest rates.

Price action makes market commentary and investors follow suit.

As the years have gone by, interest in the west in the precious metals slowly evaporated.

So here we are, years later, in the weeds. But boy this ought to change in a major league way sometime in the near future.

While gold and silver have remained as dull as dishwater over the past year, the efforts by The Gold Cartel to bury their prices has been as blatant as it could be, or ever has been.

Perhaps the most obvious of all this past year was when gold was blasted done below key support right above $1300 for no apparent reason at all. The whole drill was ludicrous, but fits right into the way The Gold Cartel operates ... one that the financial world refuses to deal with.

Gold fell close to $1160 and then has recovered these last weeks to $1230, which is a ludicrous price relative to the debasement of currencies and financial trauma in the world.

What they have done to the gold price to accomplish their mission is a true farce. Yet what they have done to silver is beyond comprehension and their never-ending capping of any silver price advance has been hideously blatant.

For silver bulls like myself, this is a BIG problem. All the money and power in the world, backed by JP Morgan, says clearly they do not want the price of silver to exhibit any sort of life of other than looking like a nearly dead animal.

Silver is now the cheapest asset on the planet as a result of its manipulation by JP Morgan and The Gold Cartel. What they have done is incredibly obscene and it will end badly for them if they stay the course.

Just recently, GATA supporter James McShirley, a prominent speaker at GATA's 2011 conference in London; lumber company CEO; and highly regarded futures trader, recently noted the following three scenarios for silver:

* If the silver price control is part of a mutually agreed contractual obligation the buyers of physical are getting the deal of a lifetime.

* If the silver price control isn't mutually agreed upon the buyers of physical are still getting the deal of a lifetime, however under hostile circumstances.

* If the silver price control is because of the cartel's total terror of silver getting away from them, and hence gold too then somebody is still getting the deal of a lifetime.

He went on to say. ...

The only question is, whose lifetime? At what point does a massive buyer of silver make their move, and clean up the billions currently there for the taking? In a short squeeze there's no earthly reason why silver couldn't be priced closer to platinum, or even palladium. Daily moves of $10 or more would be more probable that these 1 cent daily comas.

* * *

So well put.

Dealing with the constantly suppressed gold/silver prices while other assets have soared has been tiresome to put it mildly. There was a phrase growing up, "The Seven Year Itch." That is what dealing with the precious metals has felt like the past seven years. Now, after all this time, enough is enough.

The pressures seem to be building within the gold/silver markets to take their prices to much higher levels. Based on what we have seen of late, The Gold Cartel has been as aggressive as ever in stopping price rises. They have pulled out all stops to prevent gold from taking out resistance at $1235 and staying above that key technical level. What they have done to keep silver below the pitifully low $14.70 level is a joke, reported on over and over again in my commentary. Taking out $15 is pivotal for silver, but JP Morgan won't even let it get close to that level.

So why should things change? Increasing inflation pressures due to monetary debasement and stock market turmoil around the world are suddenly attracting investors to the precious metals in the west because they are so artificially cheap, thanks to what The Gold Cartel has done.

The likelihood this Cartel is going to be overpowered by investment demand from around the world is growing ... enough to enforce a major retreat. They certainly are not going away quietly. Over the past months the Commitment of Traders Reports put out by the CFTC revealed the commercials (which includes the Cartel forces) to be as long the futures markets as they have been for decades. Due to the constant interference in the market, the large specs were as short as they ever get. The internet was ripe with calls for short covering squeezes of those spec shorts. Didn't happen. Gold had one unusual 3% rally and then was stuffed. Silver was not allowed to do anything on the upside. It was kept in a tomb, like rarely ever seen in markets. And now the so-called commercials are going heavily short yet again as the specs go long.

For long-suffering and patient precious metals investors this Gold Cartel is going to have to be overpowered, which is just what I believe will occur. Seems to me it is an accident waiting to happen. The tide is going to turn. But the tide ought to look quite a bit different than it did in the years leading up to 2011.

Gold rose 12 years in a row. The Gold Cartel constantly flushed out spec longs in the process, raking in the dough, but the price gradually went higher and higher. But now, after all these years of suppression, we are probably looking at a typhoon instead of a rising tide. The gold price is more than likely going to explode like it did in its blow off top in September of 2011 and keep on going. And it is likely to make new all-time highs sooner than most people think.

The real surprise ought to be moribund silver. I am a big fan of Newton's Law of Equal and Opposite Reactions. As poorly as silver has traded these past years, which has the gold/silver ratio above 84, it should suddenly act that surprisingly well over the coming months. Short term it has to clear $15 to begin its move. But the real key is for its price to take out $21. When done it will be off to the races in a move to $100 an ounce. Seems like a pipe dream after all these crummy years, but it is coming.

As far as GATA goes, we will continue to fight the good fight. Eventually, following severe market turmoil and soaring precious metals prices, the price suppression scandal will break wide open. A decimated investing public will want to know how such a debacle developed the way it did. And the GATA camp will lay it out for them ... in hopes it is not allowed to happen ever again.

Thank you.

The US has re-imposed all of the sanctions against Iran that had been suspended under the 2015 nuclear deal. From airlines to oil firms, the list of companies and people targeted is exhaustive. The sanctions, applied on Monday, reimpose financial penalties lifted under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which promised Iran some sanctions relief in exchange for a halt to its nuclear weapons program. President Trump withdrew from the deal in May, and has since reimposed sanctions in 19 rounds. Described by Trump as the "strongest sanctions our country has ever issued," Monday's penalties target the Islamic Republic's banking, energy and transport sectors, and according to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, aim to "fundamentally alter the behavior of the Islamic Republic of Iran's leadership."
What’s the point of the Liberal Democrats? | Martha Gill      Cache   Translate Page

Britain’s political centre, plus 16 million remain voters, are there for the taking – but the party has to up its game

The Liberal Democrat party: a dead parrot or a phoenix? Political roadkill or cockroach surviving a nuclear winter? Lib Dems themselves don’t quite know. Ask a local campaigner, and the answer will be rather optimistic. The party has done well in this year’s byelections, and the membership, galvanised by Brexit, has recently risen to almost 100,000. Crucially, the memory of the toxic coalition years appears to be fading: the disheartening phrase “tuition fees”, campaigners say, is no longer heard so often on doorsteps.

But staff at its London headquarters are frustrated, not least as the party is now planning to make a quarter of them redundant to save money. They are all too aware of the double opportunity the party has been handed: Britain’s political centre, along with some 16 million remain voters. Here is a chance – one, surely, in several lifetimes – for the party to take a big leap forward. Yet it struggles to rise above 10% in the polls, and its MPs get little airtime. So why can’t the Lib Dems seize the moment?

Analysis of T cell receptor repertoire based on Vβ chain in patients with breast cancer.

Cancer Biomark. 2018;22(4):733-745

Authors: Faghih Z, Deihimi S, Talei A, Ghaderi A, Erfani N

To find out if the T cell repertoire is efficiently and specifically provoked in patients with breast cancer, we have investigated the clonotypes of main T cell subsets (based on Vβ-Chain) in tumor draining lymph nodes. CD4+ helper, CD8+ cytotoxic and (CD4+CD127dimCD25+) regulatory T cells, were negatively selected, and isolated, from lymph node mononuclear cells of 14 untreated patients with breast cancer. Four non-malignant patients, who underwent surgical operation, were also recruited as the control group. Based on sequences and new nomenclature of the T cell Receptor β Variables (TRBVs) available in the international ImMunoGeneTics (IMGT) database, 28 TRBV specific forward primers and two TRB Constant region (TRBC) specific reverse primers were developed to amplify all functional alleles. Fluorescent-labeled PCR products were then run on an ABI PRISM 310 Genetic-Analyzer. The data was analyzed by GeneMapper software version 3.1. Clonotype analysis suggested that activated T cells are present in breast cancer. More TRBV usage were detected among CD4+ helper and regulatory subsets, with Gaussian-like pattern in the majority of functional TRBV families; whereas CD8+ cytotoxic T cells showed oligoclonality in almost all TRBV families with one or two dominant peaks in each family. Similar pattern in some of these TRBVs were also observed among controls. Having no expression or polyclonality in the controls, the oligoclonal pattern observed in the TRBV18, however, appears to be specific to breast cancer patients. This phenomenon may reflect the existence of new antigenic stimulation(s) in BC patients, preferentially activating those clones of T cells that express TRBV18.

The Guardian view on Iran sanctions: not upholding the rules, but overturning them | Editorial      Cache   Translate Page

Current US policy has the clear goal of regime change. Europe must stand firm

The imposition of sanctions on Iran is designed to curb its “outlaw behaviour”, the US says. Donald Trump said the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action “cannot prevent an Iranian bomb” when he announced the US withdrawal from the treaty in May. This week his administration restored all sanctions lifted under the 2015 denuclearisation deal and added more (albeit with a six-month waiver for major oil customers). But the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN body policing the agreement, has verified repeatedly that Tehran has complied with its terms. European co-signatories agree. Meanwhile, Mr Trump has continued to attack the “worst deal ever” – while boasting of progress with North Korea, which already has a nuclear arsenal and is unlikely to reduce it, whatever its nice words. This is not about upholding rules and commitments; it is about imposing might unilaterally.

Tellingly, the administration has shifted its rhetorical justification to a laundry list of more general foreign policy demands which it knows Tehran will not and cannot agree to, however desirable some of those measures might be. Its stated aim of a better treaty does not deserve to be taken seriously. Lord Lamont, the UK’s trade envoy to Iran, says bluntly that the sanctions are aimed at regime change, whatever the US denials. The administration sees ordinary Iranians as an instrument; but “ghost shipments” and barter with countries such as China, Russia and India will probably keep Iran going, and while Iranians will face real hardship, they are more likely to flee than rise against a repressive regime.

November 5, 2018: Former US-backed Militants Switch Sides In Conflict      Cache   Translate Page

Former members of US-backed militant groups are joining forces with the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, operating in Syria, the WSJ reported on November 1. According to the report, approximately 2,000 fighters had joined the forces and have even started receiving salaries. The WSJ claimed that it was due to losing funding from the US. However, the reason pointed out by local experts is that the US strategy in Syria had lost credit even in the eyes of some of its own proxies. In the period from 2016 to 2018, thousands of former members of militant groups had reconciled with the Damascus government. A notable part of them is now serving in the newly formed units of the Syrian military, for example the Shield of Qalamoun.
On November 3rd, US-led coalition carried out airstrikes on the ISIS-held town of Hajin in the middle Euphrates River Valley, according to the Syrian Baladi News outlet. The attacks resulted in the death of 17 civilians, including women and children. The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights reported the airstrikes on ISIS positions, but didn’t report any casualties. The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces suspended its ground operations in the area on October 31st.
On November 3rd, a UN humanitarian aid convoy consisting of dozens of trucks entered the al-Rukban refugee camp near the Syrian-Jordanian border, according to Reuters. This was the first convoy to enter the camp in 9 months. The Russian Reconciliation Center of Opposing Sides announced that a unit of the Russian Military Police and three helicopters of the Russian Aerospace Forces had escorted the convoy. The al-Rukban camp is located within the area occupied by US-led forces.
The Russian military has deployed six RHM-6 chemical reconnaissance vehicles at its observation posts near the Idlib demilitarization zone in Syria, according to Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov who spoke on October 31st. He commented on the possibility of new staged chemical attacks in militant-held areas, with the risk being significantly higher in the province of Aleppo.
On November 3rd, a Syrian Arab Army unit stopped an infiltration attempt of militants from Jaysh al-Izza at the southeastern side of al-Latamia town, towards a military position in the north of Hama city. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, the military killed and injured many militants.
Furthermore, shelling by Hayat Tahir al-Sham continues in breach of the deconfliction agreement around Idlib. As reported by TASS, 2 servicemen were killed and 13 were injured in militant shelling on Syrian troops positions in the Latakia governorate and the city of Aleppo.
The YPG announced that on October 30th that it had targeted a military vehicle of the Turkish-backed Sham legion between the villages of Khezawiye and Biye in Afrin, killing 5 of its members.
The US on November 5th reimposed all pre-2015 Iran Nuclear Deal sanctions on Iran, plus additional ones. By this move, the Trump administration seeks to re-shape terms and conditions of the Iran nuclear deal as well as to impact the foreign and internal policy of Iran. This move will also have implications on the Syrian conflict creating further tensions between the US-Israeli bloc and Iranian-led forces in the war-torn country.

Trump Regime Blames Iran for Its Own High Crimes      Cache   Translate Page
by Stephen Lendman ( – Home – Stephen Lendman)
The blame game is longstanding US policy, blaming other governments for its own wrongdoing – notably its endless high crimes of war and against humanity, along with supporting the scourge of terrorism it pretends to oppose.
The Trump regime’s harshest venom targets Iran, a nation pursuing cooperative relations with all other nations, supporting world peace and stability, involved in combating regional terrorism.
Throughout the 2016 presidential campaign and since taking office, Trump consistently lied about Iran – following script written for him by AIPAC as follows:
“Iran — the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism — remains Israel’s and America’s greatest long-term threat in the Middle East.”
“The United States must confront Iran’s aggression, take firm action to support regional allies, and ensure that Iran can never acquire a nuclear weapons capability.”
“Iran is a radical Islamic theocracy that seeks to export its revolutionary ideology abroad by supporting terrorist proxy groups.”
“Iran continues to provide arms, funding and personnel to…Syria, which has repeatedly used chemical weapons against its own citizens.”
“For more than two decades, Iran has flouted its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and sought a nuclear weapons capability to further its hegemonic aims.”
“The Islamic Republic is rapidly advancing toward a nuclear weapons capability in defiance of mandatory UN Security Council resolutions requiring the suspension of its nuclear program.”
All of the above rubbish are bald-faced lies, AIPAC notorious for proliferating them, ignoring Israeli apartheid viciousness, its regional aggression, inventing reasons to vilify Iran. Legitimate ones don’t exist.
Fact: The US is “the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism” – NATO, Israel, Turkey, the Saudis, and other regimes its junior partners.
Fact: No Iranian “aggression” exists. The nation hasn’t attack another country in centuries – what the US and its imperial partners do repeatedly.
Fact: Iran abhors nuclear weapons, wants them all eliminated. Its legitimate nuclear program has no military component.
Fact: AIPAC, Israel and US hardliners lied, claiming the Islamic Republic is pursuing development of nuclear weapons.
Fact: Israel is the Middle East’s only nuclear armed and dangerous country, armed as well with banned chemical and biological weapons, used in its wars of aggression – all of the above ignored by AIPAC, supporting Israeli high crimes.
Fact: “(R)adical Islamic theocracy” defines the Saudis and other regional despotic monarchies – not Iran.
Fact: Israel is ruled by Zionist zealots, religious fundamentalists, Islamophobes, and warmongering fascists – the state notorious for its “malign activities.”
Fact: Terrorists supported by the US, other Western countries, the Saudis and Israel use chemical weapons repeatedly against Syrian civilians – incidents wrongfully blamed on Damascus.
Fact: Not a shred of evidence suggests Syrian forces ever used CWs throughout years of war. Claims otherwise are bald-faced lies.
Fact: IAEA inspections prove Iran fully observes NPT and JCPOA provisions. Washington and Israel flagrantly breached them. The Jewish state refused to sign the NPT treaty – its nuclear weapons program a longtime open secret.
“Iran’s malign activities” include pursuing Middle East peace and stability, combating the scourge of terrorism the US, NATO, Turkey, the Saudis and Israel support.
Trump is a serial liar. Nothing he says is credible. In his UN address last September, he turned truth on its head, claiming “Iran’s leaders sew (sic) chaos, death and disruption. They do not respect their neighbors, borders, or the sovereign rights of nations.”
“Instead, they plunder the nation’s resources to enrich themselves and to spread mayhem across the Middle East and far beyond.”
He repeated the above Big Lies and others about Iran numerous times, other regime officials doing the same thing.
On Fox News Sunday, Mike Pompeo used its platform to lie about Iran, saying:
Reimposed sanctions aim to deny “the world’s largest state
sponsor of terrorists the capacity to do things like they did this past
couple weeks, an attempted assassination campaign in the heart of Europe” – a bald-faced lie.
Pompeo refused to confirm US waivers granted to China, India and other countries to keep buying Iranian oil, along with maintaining normal relations with Iran.
He lied about the effectiveness of (illegal) US sanctions. For nearly 40 years, they achieved no strategic objectives – nor will new ones.
The world community largely opposes US “maximum pressure” on Iran, including EU and other major countries.
On CBS News’ Face the Nation Sunday, Pompeo boasted about “the toughest sanctions ever placed against the Islamic Republic of Iran” – ignoring their flagrant illegality and world community opposition to the Trump regime’s unacceptable anti-Iran agenda.
He lied claiming the Islamic Republic “threatens Israel.” Polar opposite is true.
He shamefully blamed Iran for “prolonging suffering of the Yemeni people,” including starvation threatening millions. The US, NATO, Israel, the Saudis and UAE bear full responsibility for endless genocidal war – not Iran.
Trump, Bolton, and Pompeo repeatedly lie to the US public and world community about the Islamic Republic and virtually everything else.
They consistently ignore Washington’s responsibility for endless wars of aggression, their mass slaughter and destruction, along with human misery they cause – together with its imperial partners.
Iran is unacceptably vilified for its sovereign independence, refusal to bow to Washington’s will, support for Palestinian rights, along with opposition to Israeli apartheid viciousness and US imperial wars.
Its leadership warrants universal support for being on the right side of these vital issues.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says Iran will break the sanctions imposed by the United States on Tehran as well as on countries that do business with it, shortly after a round of anti-Iran sanctions by America took effect.
Speaking at a meeting with the directors and deputies of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance on Monday, President Rouhani said, “We should break the sanctions very well, and we will do that.”
“With the help of the people, and the unity that exists in our society, we have to make the Americans understand that they must not use the language of force, pressure, and threats to speak to the great Iranian nation. They must be punished once and for all,” the Iranian president said.
The meeting and remarks came shortly after a new round of US sanctions took effect. The new bans target, among other things, Iran’s oil sales and Central Bank. More Iranian individuals have also been targeted by the US Department of the Treasury.
The US measures also include so-called secondary sanctions — punitive measures against third countries doing business with Iran.

US President Donald Trump introduced a first round of “primary” and “secondary” sanctions against Iran and its trade partners in August.
In May, he unilaterally pulled the US out of a multilateral deal with Iran. Two months later, footage reportedly came out in which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed he had personally convinced Trump to withdraw from the Iran deal.
Iran struck the deal with originally six world powers and the European Union (EU) back in 2015, agreeing to curb its nuclear program in return for the lifting of restrictions mainly on its oil sales.
Despite the US withdrawal, Iran has stayed in the deal but has stressed that the other parties to the agreement have to work to offset the negative impacts of the US pullout. Europe has been taking a range of measures to meet the Iranian demand for practical guarantees.
President Rouhani said Europe, too, was angry at US policies.
“Today, what the Americans are doing is merely pressure [ordinary] people, and no one else. It’s pressure [that is being put] on [the Iranian] people, other nations, other [foreign] businesses, and other governments,” he said. “Today, we are not the only ones who are angry at US policies; even European businesses and governments are angered by US policies, too.”
The US had since the May 8 withdrawal designated November 4 as the date when it aimed to bring Iran’s oil sales down to “zero.” However, three days ahead of that much-advertised deadline, the US granted waivers to eight major state buyers of Iranian crude.
President Rouhani said US officials had in fact conceded defeat.
“They (the Americans) saw that they couldn’t replace [Iranian oil on the market]; and even assuming they did not concede defeat and did not grant waivers to countries, we would still be able to sell our oil [because] we have adequate capabilities to do that,” the Iranian president said.
‘Europeans want Trump gone’
In his Monday remarks, President Rouhani also said he believed that America had never before seen as lawless an administration as that of Trump’s.
He said all US administrations had violated international law, but “these (current officials) score on top on the lawlessness rankings.”
“I don’t recall a group assuming power at the White House that was racist as these,” the Iranian president said.
“This is not [just] us who wish for the life of this incumbent administration in the US to become shorter and shorter; their (the Americans’) own European allies have told me in [private] meetings that that is one of their wishes,” President Rouhani said.
‘Dialog needs no intermediary, but US must honor promises’
President Rouhani said that when he was in New York for the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in September, “the leaders of four major countries” sought to broker a meeting between him and the US president. He did not name those leaders.
The Iranian chief executive said, however, that there was no need for mediation.
“Honor your obligations first! We will speak then,” Rouhani said, addressing American officials. “We have no problem with talking. If our interlocutor honors its word and promises, what will be wrong with talking?”

He noted that the unilateral withdrawal from the Iran deal has isolated the US.
“Just look at how many countries support the US move and how many don’t,” he said. “The fact America insists on something and the entire European Union resists that same thing is nothing simple. That means victory for [our] diplomacy and foreign policy.”
Earlier, President Rouhani’s chief of staff announced that Trump had eight times requested a meeting with the Iranian president while he was in New York but had been rejected all eight times.
‘Iran in economic war with US’ & ‘Iran’s economic problems will end’
President Rouhani also said that the Islamic Republic was engaged in “an economic war” with the US.
“We have to stand and fight, and win,” he said. “God will make us win.”
The Iranian president also said the current economic problems faced by Iran will not continue.
“We will re-launch economic growth. No one should think the trend we have been seeing in the past several months will continue like that. This trend will be stopped.”
Iran’s national currency has lost some of its value against the US dollar over the past months. While the Iranian rial has partially rebounded, it continues to be at a low exchange rate against the US dollar.

The Pentagon Realised What It Has Done – the Chinese Put the US Army on Its Knees
November 04, 2018
In the system of national defense of the US a gaping vulnerability was found that is very difficult to close. The reaction of the Pentagon is reminiscent of badly hidden panic, and journalists who examined the results of the research of American experts, who thoroughly studied the condition of the American army and defensive industry, admit that there is iron logic in the recent “strange” actions of president Trump — he wants to save America from transforming into a cardboard tiger with paper claws.
The essence of the problem, according to the retelling of the columnist of the Reuters agency Andy Home, who obtained a copy of the September report of the US Department of Defence on the situation concerning key deliveries necessary for the American army, is reduced to one important figure. More than 300 (!) key elements necessary for the normal functioning of the US Armed Forces and defensive industry are under threat: American producers are either on the verge of bankruptcy or were already replaced by suppliers from China or other countries because of the deindustrialisation of national economy and the relocation of production to the countries of Southeast Asia.
Mr. Home gives as a striking and clear example the amusing (of course, if you are not a US military man) fact from the report: it turns out that the last American producer of the synthetic threads necessary for the production of army tents “died” quite recently. This means that in the event that the US will fall under such a “textile embargo”, for some American soldiers they will seriously face the prospect of sleeping in the open-air. It is difficult not to notice that such a prospect looks slightly humiliating for an army that claims to be the most hi-tech on the planet.
The situation could be considered as funny if it didn’t affect such a wide range of requirements of the American army and military-industrial complex. In the declassified part of the research of the American Department of Defence it is mentioned that in the US there are difficulties with future deliveries of the power switches that nearly all American missiles are equipped with. As officials of the Pentagon report, the producer of these switches was closed down, but the highest military ranks learned about it only after it became clear that the power switches ended. And there is nowhere to take new ones from, because the producer disappeared into thin air a whole 2 years ago. One more striking example: the country’s only producer of solid rocket motors for “air-to-air” missiles, as the American officials write, “encountered technical production issues”, the reasons for which couldn’t be found even after government and military experts were involved. Attempts to restart production failed, and the Pentagon was obliged to employ a Norwegian company to ensure uninterrupted deliveries. Obviously, this indicates a certain technical degradation of the entire American system, because only the loss of some key competencies can explain a situation in which production cannot be restored and the problem cannot even be determined.
Whilst becoming acquainted with the complaints of the leadership of the American army it is difficult to rid oneself of the impression that it isn’t a document of the US Department of Defence dated September, 2018 that is in front of your eyes, but a description of the problems of the Russian army from the era of the dashing 90’s. Literally there is no direction in which there would be no serious or very serious problems, and often they even can’t be solved at the expense of the bottomless military budget.
In the section on nuclear weapon problems the Pentagon complains that in the US there isn’t the necessary number of engineers and technicians who would have the corresponding education, training, and US citizenship that are necessary for working with army nuclear objects. The mention of nationality is of importance, because American higher education institutions produce enough engineers, physicists, and representatives of other technical specialties and exact sciences, however a disproportionately large number of these graduates are foreigners, most often from the People’s Republic of China.
Americans can’t find not only the necessary engineers, but also the necessary microelectronics for nuclear weapons. And they complain that they no longer have the right to trust suppliers of electronic components – after all,
“the supply chain is globalised”. In translation from American bureaucratese into colloquial Russian it means: “the microelectronics for our nuclear missiles are made in China, and we don’t know what the Chinese have stuffed in it”.
There are serious difficulties even concerning issues that should be solved very easily in the conditions of hi-tech American economy. For example, the Pentagon complains about a lack of tools for the development of software, as well as the management of data and production, that could be trusted. The situation is exacerbated by “poor cybersecurity practices by many key software vendors”. This, when translated from American bureaucratese into colloquial Russian, means: “concerning cybersecurity, our vendors are so bad that we don’t know what the Chinese and Russian hackers cram into the software that our military use”.
Main conclusion of the report:
“China represents a significant and growing risk to the supply of materials deemed strategic and critical to U.S. national security. <…> Areas of concern to America’s manufacturing and defense industrial base include a growing number of both widely used and specialized metals, alloys and other materials, including rare earths and permanent magnets”.
In general everything is bad, starting with aluminium and ending with cybersecurity, from power switches for missiles to engineers and drill operators, and from computer numerical control machines to synthetic fabric for military tents. The greed of American business, the ideology of globalisation, and the iron belief that history, as Fukuyama predicted, is about to end collectively caused such damage to the defense capability of the US that the geopolitical opponents couldn’t even dream of. It is precisely by understanding this fact that explains Donald Trump’s attempts to carry out the reindustrialisation of America almost by force.
However, there is every reason to believe that, taking into account the present economic difficulties, it’s unlikely that Trump’s administration will be able to fix what its predecessors broke 20 years. And we [Russians – ed] and our Chinese partners need, on the one hand, not to repeat the mistakes of Americans, and on the other hand — to make the most of these mistakes. Judging by what is happening now on the world stage, this is exactly what Moscow and Beijing are doing.
