'Almost all' Pakistani banks hacked in security breach, says FIA cybercrime head       Cache   Translate Page

In a shocking revelation, the head of the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) cybercrime wing has said data from "almost all" Pakistani banks was stolen in a recent security breach.

"According to a recent report we have received, data from almost all Pakistani banks has been reportedly hacked," FIA Cybercrimes Director retired Capt Mohammad Shoaib told Geo News on Tuesday.

When pressed to clarify, the official said data from "most of the banks" operating in the country had been compromised.

Speaking to DawnNewsTV, Shoaib said hackers based outside Pakistan had breached the security systems of several local banks. "The hackers have stolen large amounts of money from people's accounts," he added.

"The recent attack on banks has made it quite clear that there is a need for improvement in the security system of our banks," he observed.

He said the FIA has written to all banks, and a meeting of the banks' heads and security managements is being called. The meeting will look into ways the security infrastructure of banks can be bolstered.

"Banks are the custodians of the money people have stored in them," Shoaib said. "They are also responsible if their security features are so weak that they result in pilferage."

It wasn't immediately clear when exactly the security breach took place.

According to Shoaib, more than 100 cases are being investigated by the agency in connection with the breach.

"An element of banking fraud which is a cause of concern is that banks hide the theft [that involves them]... and the clients report [the theft] to the banks and not to us, resulting in a loss of people's money," he told DawnNewsTV.

"We are trying to play a proactive role in preventing bank pilferage," he added.

Shoaib said the agency has arrested many gangs involved in cybercrimes and recovered stolen money from them.

A gang was arrested last week whose members used to disguise themselves as army officials and withdraw money from banks after gathering people's data, the official added.

'Data of over 8,000 account holders sold'

The disclosure comes days after around 10 banks blocked all international transactions on their cards, as concerns about a breach of credit and debit card data spread in the banking circles.

Sources told Dawn the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has been informed by several commercial banks that they have blocked international payments on debit and credit cards as a precautionary measure after cyber attacks on their clients’ accounts.

According to a digital security website krebsonsecurity.com, data of over 8,000 account holders of about 10 Pakistani banks was sold in a market of hackers.

A large Pakistani bank sent messages to its clients that online mobile banking services would be terminated for a temporary period from November 3 onwards on ‘technical grounds’.

The first cyber attack was reported by BankIslami on October 27. The bank said that Rs2.6 million was stolen from international payment cards after which it has stopped such transactions and allowed biometrically verified payments only on ATM cards within Pakistan.

Next day, the SBP issued directives to all banks to ensure that security measures on all information technology systems — including those related to card operations — are continuously updated to meet future challenges, ensure real-time monitoring of card operations related systems and transactions and immediately coordinate with all the integrated payment schemes, switch operators and media service providers.

EFF Unveils Virtual Reality Tool To Help People Spot Surveillance Devices in Their Communities       Cache   Translate Page
Law Enforcement’s Deployment of High-Tech Spying Tools On the Rise

San Francisco—The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) launched a virtual reality (VR) experience on its website today that teaches people how to spot and understand the surveillance technologies police are increasingly using to spy on communities.

“We are living in an age of surveillance, where hard-to-spot cameras capture our faces and our license plates, drones in the sky videotape our streets, and police carry mobile biometric devices to scan people’s fingerprints,” said EFF Senior Investigative Researcher Dave Maass. “We made our ‘Spot the Surveillance’ VR tool to help people recognize these spying technologies around them and understand what their capabilities are."

Spot the Surveillance, which works best with a VR headset but will also work on standard browsers, places users in a 360-degree street scene in San Francisco. In the scene, a young resident is in an encounter with police. Users are challenged to identify surveillance tools by looking around the scene. The experience takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

The surveillance technologies featured in the scene include a body-worn camera, automated license plate readers, a drone, a mobile biometric device, and pan-tilt-zoom cameras. The project draws from years of research gathered by EFF in its Street-Level Surveillance project, which shines a light on how police use, and abuse, technology to spy on communities.

Created by EFF’s engineering and design team, the Stop the Surveillance VR experience can be found at https://eff.org/spot-vr.

“One of our goals at EFF is to experiment with how emerging online technologies can help bring about awareness and change,” said EFF Web Developer Laura Schatzkin, who coded the project. “The issue of ubiquitous police surveillance was a perfect match for virtual reality. We hope that after being immersed in this digital experience users will acquire a new perspective on privacy that will stay with them when they remove the headset and go out into the real world.”

The current version is now being made publicly available for user testing, as part of the Aaron Swartz Day and International Hackathon festivities. EFF will be conducting live demonstrations of the project at the event on Nov. 10-11 at the Internet Archive in San Francisco. Swartz, the brilliant activist and Internet pioneer, was facing a myriad of federal charges for downloading scientific journals when he took his own life in 2013.

EFF seeks user feedback and bug reports, which will be incorporated into an updated version scheduled for release in Spring 2019. The VR project was supported during its development through the XRstudio residency program at Mozilla. The project was also made possible with the support of a 2018 Journalism 360 Challenge grant. Journalism 360 is a global network of storytellers accelerating the understanding and production of immersive journalism. Its founding partners are the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Google News Initiative, and the Online News Association.

‘20 under 40’ Class of 2018—John Bekisz Jr.      Cache   Translate Page
11/06/2018
Paul Ragusa

John Bekisz Jr., 31

Systems integration manager, Securitas Electronic Security Inc.

Elmsford, N.Y.

John Bekisz Jr. is a systems integration manager at Securitas Electronic Security Inc. (SES), where he manages the engineering and integration of technology systems for one of the company’s infrastructure transportation projects. The project encompasses a variety of security technology systems including video surveillance, access control, intrusion detection, security systems management, network management and monitoring, blue light stations, and two-way radio communications, to name just a few.

“At SES we have an engineering center of excellence in Elmsford, between the team that I manage, we can provide both expertise in-house and leverage the resources from the center of excellence to really drive our project home for the client and provide them with a successful design, a proven engineering process, through integration and deployment,” Bekisz said.

With a first-responder background—he was a volunteer fireman and EMT for about 10 years—Bekisz said he was interested in law enforcement from an early age. And after earning an electrical engineering master’s degree from Manhattan College in the Bronx, N.Y., he embarked on a career as a security consultant and engineer.

“I focused more and more on security consulting and engineering and once I got into the industry and got a mentor, I learned more about the complexities of risk management and risk analysis—how to effectively and economically select mitigations for those risks,” he explained. “Taking that knowledge and applying my engineering background, I became proficient at designing, recommending and overseeing the implementation of physical and electronic security systems, including video surveillance, biometrics, and control center/command center design.”

Bekisz said his job also involved leveraging new technology for security and safety. “I am keeping a close eye on unmanned robotic systems, cloud based solutions, and advanced computer vision applications,” he said.

He is also doing his part to give back and get more young people interested in security by participating in the mentorship program at Manhattan College.

  • After NLL: Interprocedural conflicts

In my previous post on the status of NLL, I promised to talk about “What is next?” for ownership and borrowing in Rust. I want to lay out the various limitations of Rust’s ownership and borrowing system that I see, as well as – where applicable – current workarounds. I’m curious to get feedback on which problems affect folks the most.

The first limitation I wanted to focus on is interprocedural conflicts. In fact, I’ve covered a special case of this before – where a closure conflicts with its creator function – in my post on Precise Closure Capture Clauses. But the problem is more general.

  • How to speed up the Rust compiler in 2018: NLL edition

Niko Matsakis recently blogged about the Rust compiler’s new borrow checker, which implements non-lexical lifetimes (NLL). The new borrow checker is a really nice improvement to Rust, because it accepts many sound programs that the old borrow checker rejected.

  • Socorro: October 2018 happenings

Socorro is the crash ingestion pipeline for Mozilla's products like Firefox. When Firefox crashes, the Breakpad crash reporter asks the user if the user would like to send a crash report. If the user answers "yes!", then the Breakpad crash reporter collects data related to the crash, generates a crash report, and submits that crash report as an HTTP POST to Socorro. Socorro saves the crash report, processes it, and provides an interface for aggregating, searching, and looking at crash reports.

  • Principles of Mixed Reality Permissions

Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR and AR) — known together as Mixed Reality (MR) — introduce a new dimension of physicality to current web security and privacy concerns. Problems that are already difficult on the 2D web, like permissions and clickjacking, become even more complex when users are immersed in a 3D experience. This is especially true on head-worn displays, where there is no analogous concept to the 2D “window,” and everything a user sees might be rendered by the web application. Compounding the difficulty of obtaining permission is the more intimate nature of the data collected by the additional sensors required to enable AR and VR experiences.

To enable immersive MR experiences, devices have sensors that not only capture information about the physical world around the user (far beyond the sensors common on mobile phones), but also capture personal details about the user and (possibly) bystanders. For example, these sensors could create detailed 3D maps of the physical world (either by using underlying platform capabilities like the ability to intersect 3D rays with a model of world around the user, or by direct camera access), infer biometric data like height and gait, and potentially find and recognize nearby faces in the numerous cameras typically present on these devices. The infrared sensor that detects when a head-mounted device is worn could eventually disclose more detailed biometrics like perspiration and pulse rate, and some devices already incorporate eye-tracking.

  • TenFourFox FPR11b1 available

TenFourFox Feature Parity 11 beta 1 is now available (downloads, hashes, release notes). As mentioned, FPR11 and FPR12 will be smaller in scope due to less low-hanging fruit to work on and other competing projects such as the POWER9 JIT, but there are still new features and improvements.

The most notable one is my second attempt to get unique origin for data: URIs to stick (issue 525). This ran aground in FPR10 and had to be turned off because of compatibility issues with the Firefox 45 version of uBlock Origin, which would be too major an add-on for me to ignore breaking. FPR11 now has a shim in it to allow the old behaviour for data URL access initiated by the internal system principal (including add-ons) but use the new behaviour for web content, and seems to properly reject the same test cases while allowing uBlock to run normally. As before, we really need this in the browser to defend against XSS attacks, so please test thoroughly. Once again, if you experience unusual behaviour in this version, please flip security.data_uri.unique_opaque_origin to false and restart the browser. If the behaviour changes, then this was the cause and you should report it in the comments.

With surveillance technology becoming ever more ubiquitous, it would be useful to know where to look for it. That includes devices like body cameras, automated license plate readers, drones and biometric devices.

10 Astonishing Feats Of Modern Technology
By Julia Crawford,
Listverse, 5 November 2018.

Technology has developed so fast in recent years that we can’t imagine our lives without it. Now, thanks to some innovative and creative minds, the tech industry has the potential to change the course of our future. Whether it’ll revolutionize how we do things or how we treat certain diseases, technology is set to change the world as we know it.

Researchers have recently made some groundbreaking advancements, from a tiny microchip designed for better biometric security to a machine that can make gallons of fresh water straight out of the air. These innovations are impressive and offer us a glimpse at how we can improve our lives and create a more sustainable Earth.

Here are ten of the most astonishing feats of modern technology in recent times.

10. Multipurpose Implants

The people of Sweden have been lining up to get rice grain-sized microchips implanted into their hands. Biohax International is the company behind the chips and is one of the most prominent providers of the technology in Sweden. These microchips improve their users’ daily lives when it comes to accessing their homes, offices, and gyms, all with the simple swipe of a hand. The microchips are also designed to contain emergency contact details, social media profile information, and even e-tickets for events and train trips.

The microchips are inserted right above a user’s thumb using a syringe much like that which is used for vaccinations. The procedure is said to cost about US$180, and over 4,000 Swedes have already adopted the technology. Even Sweden’s largest train company has jumped aboard the new chipping trend by allowing its commuters to use their chips instead of tickets, and there’s even talk that this technology could soon be used to make payments in stores and restaurants.[1]

9. 3-D Metal Printing

3-D printing is a relatively new method of manufacturing which uses various kinds of plastic to make things. Now, companies like HP and GE have taken the first steps toward a making a new kind of additive manufacturing go mainstream by introducing 3-D metal printing products. HP’s 3-D Printing Business has recently introduced the HP Metal Jet, which is specifically made for the high-volume manufacturing of production-grade metal parts, quickly and at reduced cost. Manufacturers such as Parmatech have already deployed the HP Metal Jet for factory production. Some major customers placing orders include Volkswagen and Wilo as well as vertical-market manufacturers like Primo Medical Group and OKAY Industries.

GE Additive has also announced their own large metal printer called the Arcam EBM Spectra H, which is a high-heat 3-D printer meant to print with metals that are prone to cracking. Working at temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees Celsius (1,832 °F), it can print with metals such as titanium aluminide and Alloy 718. It will also be able to support the printing of nickel super alloys starting in 2019. These two printers are set to define a new generation of additive manufacturing and offer a glimpse of the possibilities that lie ahead in the future.[2]

8. Synthetic Embryos

wpsF35A.tmp

Dutch scientists have made a revolutionary breakthrough in embryonic science by creating synthetic mouse embryos without the need for sperm or eggs. This achievement may lead to some promising implications for human infertility. Researchers from the MERLN Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine in the Netherlands used mouse cells that weren’t traditional sex cells to create “blastocyst-like structures.” By using two different types of mouse stem cells, the resulting mass of cells resembled that of a more traditional baby-forming process. When these structures were placed in the wombs of female mice, they grew for several days, which is a medical first.

This kind of biomedical technology can assist in infertility research when it comes to miscarriages that occur at the implantation stage of development. The lead researcher, Dr. Nicolas Rivron, said that his team will now be able to generate large numbers of these embryos to study them in detail. This could help them understand why some embryos fail to implant and possibly screen for drugs that help with fertility. On the other hand, efforts could be stymied, since anything relatable to genetic engineering tends to cause a bioethical controversy.[3]

7. AI Painting Sells For US$432,000

wpsB2D2.tmp

An AI program developed by Paris-based art collective Obvious has produced a painting that sold for US$432,000 at an auction. Before the sale, Christie’s in New York estimated that the painting would fetch only around US$7,000 to US$10,000. The painting was called Portrait of Edmond Belamy, and it was produced using an algorithm as well as a data set of 15,000 portraits painted from the 14th to 20th centuries. The algorithm generated the image by comparing its own work to those in the data set until it couldn’t tell the two works apart.

The sale, which was organized by Christie’s specialist Richard Lloyd, attracted a significant amount of media attention. According to Lloyd, AI is one of several technologies that will have a big impact on the art market in the future, although it may be far too early to predict what that impact will be.[4]

6. Drones That Can Lift 40 Times Their Own Weight

Researchers at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland and Stanford University were able to develop a new line of small flying robots that can move objects 40 times their own weight. These drones are called FlyCroTugs (which stands for “flying, micro tugging robots”) and are equipped with a system of winches, adhesives, and microspines that allow them to latch onto just about anything. Even though the drones have some unchangable parts such as the winch, they are highly customizable to suit any situation. For instance, the grippers can be moved around depending on the landing surface, and additional accessories such as wheels can also be attached when a task calls for it.

Once the drones need to lift something, the grippers are deployed to connect with the object. These are a non-sticky adhesive designed by researchers who took some inspiration from the toes of geckos. The drone grippers create intermolecular forces between their pads and the surface of an object. If that isn’t enough, the microspines (which are a series of metal spikes resembling the point of a fishing hook) can be used. These drones can be used during sensitive situations such as rescue operations. Researchers were able to open a door by lassoing its handle, turning it, and pulling it until the door opened. In another test run, researchers attached a camera to the drone and used it to explore a crumbling structure.[5]

5. The Robot Farm

In San Carlos, California, a start-up company called Iron Ox created a fully autonomous farm. It’s a hydroponic indoor farm that relies on two machines to plant, care for, and harvest the produce. The first machine is a robot about as big as a car and weighs around 450 kilograms (1,000 lb). Its responsibilities include picking up the trays of plants and transporting them around the greenhouse. The second machine is a robotic arm that is responsible for the more refined manipulation tasks such as seeding and transplanting.

Once a tray of plants has grown enough, the mobile robot carries it to the processing area. Once there, the robotic arm moves the baby plants from the densely packed tray to containers with more space. The co-founder and CEO of Iron Ox, Brandon Alexander, claims that the company is able to do the equivalent 30 acres of outdoor farming in just a single acre on its robotic farm. The company wants to expand by building more of these robotic farms near urban centers to make produce that is fresher upon arrival. Currently, Iron Ox is growing leafy greens and herbs, but they plan to start producing other crops such as tomatoes in the future.[6]

4. Road That Charges Electric Vehicles

wps9C87.tmp

Sweden plans to have fossil fuel-free transportation in place by the year 2030, and the Swedish government has just implemented what could be a critical step toward making it a reality. A part of a road near Stockholm has been equipped to charge electric vehicles as they drive on it. The project, called eRoadArlanda, uses technology similar to overhead cables that charge electric trolleys and buses. Yet, the cables are built into the road. Once a retrofitted vehicle senses it’s on the electric road, an arm lowers onto the road and charges the car’s battery. The track works regardless of any kind of weather condition.

Although the system is designed to feed heavy truck loads, it will also be capable of charging cars and buses. The road will be paid for by billing the driver of each vehicle for the amount of electricity they’ve used while on the road. eRoadArlanda has completed 2.01 kilometers (1.25 mi) of the electrified road on a public highway as part of the test and plans to expand this technology to other parts of the country.[7]

3. Boston Dynamics’s First Commercial Robot

Boston Dynamics is well-known for its agile robots. Now, the company is set to release its very first commercial product to the market - a dog-like robot called the SpotMini. The commercial release was announced in May 2018, and plans are in place to start shipping out SpotMini robots in July 2019 at the rate of 1,000 units per year. The ultimate goal is to provide a flexible platform for a variety of applications, such as construction, delivery, security, and home assistance. The Mini’s closest “relative” robot, Spot, stands at 1.2 meters (4 ft) high and weighs about 73 kilograms (160 lb). Videos were uploaded to YouTube displaying its incredible capabilities, from navigating harsh terrain to staying on its feet when kicked.

The SpotMini has a sleek design, stands at about 0.9 meters (3 ft) high, and weighs 25 kilograms (55 lb). It can go wherever larger robots can’t, and with an optional snake-like arm, it can do things like open doors. Third parties will be able to design add-on tools thanks to a universal expansion port. Soon, it’ll become a regular occurrence to see a robot help people with daily tasks.[8]

2. App That Helps Accelerate Cancer Research

wps5C8D.tmp

The DreamLab app is an application that runs in the background of an idling phone which utilizes the wasted processing power to perform complex scientific calculations for research purposes. The Vodafone Foundation has recently announced that the users of the DreamLab app have helped cancer researchers to finish Project Genetic Profile, a project focused on calculating the genetic similarities between brain, lung, melanoma, and sarcoma cancers. The app will now be used to help with Project Demystify, which will ultimately help connect the dots between human physical traits and their genetic basis. The Chief of Informatics at the Garvan Institute, Dr. Warren Kaplan, said that the DreamLab app showed the power of “citizen science,” the collective effort of members of the community to make an impact on research progress.

Cancer is a disease of the DNA, and to understand it better, researchers have to analyze data from sequencing, or “decoding,” the DNA of cancer patients. This is where DreamLab steps in to help, with its users who have collectively contributed a whopping 20 million research calculations. New Zealanders have contributed over 220,000 “dreaming sessions,” which have helped to calculate the data three times faster than it would have originally taken.[9]

1. The Machine That Can Make Water Out Of Thin Air

wps8F33.tmp

A California-based team managed to create machines that can produce hundreds of gallons of fresh drinking water a day straight out of the air, which earned them a handsome US$1.5 million prize. The machines are dubbed “Skywater” and were created by the Skysource/Skywater Alliance, a team of sustainability experts from Venice, California. The machines, which are housed in giant metal boxes, are atmospheric water generators that condense water vapor from the air and turn it into drinking water. These machines can be powered by solar energy or the burning of biofuels. They’re perfect for households, farming, or even emergency relief efforts.

The Skysource/Skywater Alliance team received the prestigious Water Abundance XPRIZE from XPRIZE, a nonprofit organization from California that sometimes runs multimillion-dollar competitions geared toward creating solutions for the world’s problems. It was a two-year contest that sought to find answers to the global water crises by facilitating the development of new technologies.[10]

David Hertz, one of the leaders of the Skysource/Skywater Alliance, said that he’s excited to see what their machines can do for people living in parts of the world where water is becoming scarce. According to him, there’s more than enough water vapor in the air for the machines to extract. In fact, he says that there’s about “37.5 million billion gallons of water” in the atmosphere at any given time, which is more fresh water than all of the rivers on Earth.

Towards smarter classrooms      Cache   Translate Page
Table for Nine by derekbruff, on Flickr
"Table for Nine" (CC BY-NC 2.0) by derekbruff

Classroom technology can be extremely frustrating. Every room I use seems to have different equipment and controls. Some rooms have old-school wall switches and several remote controls that activate the projectors and screens. Other rooms have a touch screen that controls everything. I tend to get to the room at least 15 minutes before the start of the session, preferably 30 minutes, in case the infrastructure doesn't like me. Sometimes everything just works and I am pleasantly surprised but other times I simply can't work out how to get the system to recognise my laptop or in some cases I can't get the blinds to work. Sometimes there are a row of switches with no indication of what they do and so when I try to turn on a light the black-out curtain starts descending. If all classrooms had the same interface that would be fine but they seem to be all different. This takes up a lot of time and energy from the teacher.

I was therefore pleased to read about a project at Indiana University to create smart classrooms as described in an article in Campus Tech, Are 'Smart' Classrooms the Future?. The vision is to have truly smart classrooms that log you in as you walk in the door and then automatically setting up the lighting, screens, browser, slideshows etc according to your preferences. Students can also log into the room and get access to the necessary resources for the session. No mysterious switches or confusing touch screens to negotiate. If you are going to get teachers to buy into using technology then that technology must make life easier for them and free them from irritatingly time-consuming activities. According to Stacy Morrone, IU associate vice president for learning technologies:

"We want to free up faculty from many of the routine tasks they need to complete during every class period to give them more time to interact with their students, starting from the moment they walk into the classroom."

IU invited a number of stakeholders to participate in a working group to brainstorm ideas for realising the smart classroom of the future. Their conclusions can be found in a report, the Indiana University Smart Classroom Summit. Among the ideas was to have smartboard functionality on walls and tables so that students could write and draw anywhere and be able to save everything digitally. Most importantly the technology should become invisible and biometrically or voice-activated.

Even more interesting would be to have classrooms that are designed to fully integrate distance students into the class with smart microphones and cameras that track whoever is speaking in the room as well as allowing distance students to contribute seamlessly. The vital element here is that the online participants are always visible and can participate in all activities. This could mean that they can be assigned to work in a group with classroom students or working as an online group but contributing to the common work spaces shared by  the whole class. In today's classrooms the online students are usually passive spectators.

I look forward to walking into my first smart classroom where everything just works.

Apple Files Patent That Points Towards Wellness Features For New AirPods      Cache   Translate Page

AirPods are wireless Bluetooth earbuds that were released by Apple in December 2016. AirPods feature Apple’s voice assistant, Siri, built into them. The user can tap on the earphones to activate Siri. AirPods also have optical sensors and motion accelerometers that automatically control the audio and engage the microphone. The earbuds are compatible with iOS devices and currently available for $159 at Apple’s online store.

The New AirPods

The second generation AirPods were expected to launch at the 2018 Apple event, which unfortunately, didn’t happen. However, according to a new patent by Apple, details about the upcoming wireless earphones have surfaced. These patents include topics such as “wellness sensors” among other topics. Apple also received a mandatory Bluetooth SIG certificate for the AirPods.

Apple’s new trademark filings cover class 10, 14 and 28. Class 10 refers to wellness instruments and sensors. These include biometric data, heart rate sensors and movement counters. However, Apple won’t be the first company to add a heart rate sensor, Samsung had done this with the Gear IconX. The class 14 refers to horological and chronometric instruments, which could mean better fitness tracking. Lastly, class 28 refers to games and playthings. These trademark filings could expand the scope of AirPods. The AirPods are also Bluetooth 5.0 certified, although, it does not offer much benefit in terms of audio, it does extend the range and connectivity.

All of these patent filings point towards the utility of the new AirPods. The new wireless earbuds would not only be used to listen to music, but could also be used as a wellness device. Rumours also state that new AirPods would also come with support for active noise cancellation, filtering out ambient noises for more focus on music and calls.

The relationship between security and user friction remains problematic. Businesses can increase security by strengthening authentication procedures, for example, by requiring multi-factor authentication in the form of soft tokens or biometric proof of identity. But this invariably makes it more time-consuming and complex for the user. This complexity, usually known as user friction, deters online visitors and encourages in-house staff to seek ways to bypass it.

'The capability': Australia's vast new facial imaging system risks 'profound chilling effect' on dissent      Cache   Translate Page
Civil rights groups have warned a vast, powerful system allowing the near real-time matching of citizens' facial images risks a "profound chilling effect" on protest and dissent. The technology - known in shorthand as "the capability" - collects and pools facial imagery from various state and federal government sources, including driver's licences, passports and visas. The biometric information can then rapidly - almost in real time - be compared with other sources, such as CCTV footage, to match identities. The system, chiefly controlled by the federal Department of Home Affairs, is designed to give intelligence and security agencies a powerful tool to deter identity crime, and quickly identify terror and crime suspects. But it has prompted serious concern among academics, human rights groups and privacy experts. The system sweeps up and processes citizens' sensitive biometric information regardless of whether they have committed or are suspected of an offence.
