Yes, There's Still Something You Can Do Today Besides Voting      Cache   Translate Page

We all want Trump and his servile, enabling Republicans to lose control of Congress. But many of us feel the Democrats are nothing more than the lesser evil, with a leadership that pursues opportunism and careerism rather than the party's values and principles. How do we change that? One way is to elect as many members of Congress we can who are not beholden to the corrupt party leadership. For example, these are progressive candidates who won their primaries and who the DCCC and Nancy Pelosi have refused to support:
Randy Bryce (WI-01)
Ammar Campa-Najjar (CA-50)
Audrey Denney (CA-01)
Kara Eastman (NE-02)
Kendra Fershee (WV-01)
Jess King (PA-11)
Nate MuMurray (NY-27)
J.D. Scholten (IA-04)
Mike Siegel (TX-10)
Dayna Steele (TX-36)
James Thompson (KS-04)
Instead, the DCCC and Pelosi are spending tens of millions of dollars on New Dems and Blue Dogs from the Republican wing of the Democratic Party, consciously shifting the congressional caucus in a sharply rightward.corporate direction-- in the opposite direction the Democratic base wishes it to move.

Today we have to deal with an existential problem-- Trump and his GOP enablers. But we should concentrate on making sure the progressives running for Congress today have every chance possible to win. Think back to when you were in school or the military or at summer camp. Did you have any pals back then who like in Omaha? Can you call them and ask them to vote for Kara Eastman? Sunday Kara told her supporters that her race "is one of the most closely watched in the entire country. Everyone’s eyes are on this district, waiting to see what happens on election day. If we can win here, it’s proof that our common-sense progressive platform can work around the rest of the country as well. We have grown this small grassroots movement into something bigger than all of us. We are ready to make history and create meaningful change in our country. Your vote matters. This race will be incredibly close, and we need you to show up and be counted on election day. Make sure you have a plan to get to the polls on Tuesday, November 6th and make your voice heard. Your vote would be the best birthday gift I could get this year." And her win would be a gift for every progressive in America. Think again... maybe you have a cousin in Omaha? No? Perhaps an old chum you haven't talk to in years who lives in Gretna or La Vista or Papillion? Today, only phone calls can help, not checks; too late for that.

How about someone who lives in Racine or Kenosha or Janesville, Wisconsin? Those are the 3 biggest towns in Randy Bryce's district. A persuasive GOTV call to someone you know, is worth more than any financial contribution right now. Maybe someone who moved to Elkhorn or Burlington? Lake Geneva? Muskego? Or maybe the suburbs south of Milwaukee-- Oak Creek, Franklin, Greendale, Caldonia? This is going to be a close race. Every vote counts.

In western New York, there's a big space with lots of suburbs and small towns between Buffalo and Rochester. Anyone you know up there who you could talk to about Nate McMurray. Most people who hear that Chris Collins is an extreme Trumpist and that he was arrested for corruption charges and is out on bail, are very open to hearing reasons to vote for Nate McMurray.

Same in Escondido, Ramona, Lakeside, Santee and the other suburbs east and north of San Diego. And Temecula... and the eastern parts of El Cajon-- that's all Ammar Campa-Najjar's district, where the incumbent, Druncan Hunter, is also an extreme Trumpist out on bail after being arrested by the FBI.

And on the exact opposite end of California, up in the northeast... maybe you know someone with a phone who moved to Grass Valley? Oroville, Redding, Chico, Paradise, Yreka, Red Bluff? Someone living on a houseboat in Lake Shasta or Goose Lake? That's all part of CA-01, where Berniecrat Audrey Denney is making tremendous headway against Doug LaMalfa and can use every vote she can get.

Don't tell me you don't know anyone in Austin. Everyone does... just think. Mike Siegel's district includes lots of Austin neighborhoods-- The Triangle, Rosedale, Ridge Top, Coronado Hills, St Johns, Broadacres, Brentwood, Oakmont Heights, Balcones Park, Abercrombe, Skyview, Crestview, Allandale, Wooten, North Shoal Creek, Mesa Forest, Quail Hollow, Gracywoods, North Oaks, up into Pflugerville and then out towards Houston in towns like Bastrop, La Grange, Brenham, Sealy, Weimar, as well as towns like Tombatt, Cypress, Prairie View and Fairfield on the outskirts of Houston. Mike's race to replace the Trumpist incumbent-- who helped formulate the babies in cages policy-- is going to depend on getting people to come out to vote today in those Austin neighborhoods, Houston suburbs and everything in between. Know anyone there you could call?

And on the other side of Houston... maybe you know someone from a past life who went to work for NASA? Dayna Steele's race is going to be decided tonight by voters in Seabook, Deer Park, Channelview, Sheldon and Crosby on the outskirts of Houston-- as well as by folks living in La Porte, Baytown, Beach City and up in Lumberton, Liberty, Livingston, Jasper, Bon Wier (right on the Louisiana border), Kirbyville, and in the Beaumont suburbs like Vidor and Rose City.

Maybe you know people in Lancaster, Pennsylvania or up in Ephrata or Elizabethtown or down in Hanover in York County. Call them and persuade them to vote for Jess King.

Is it possible you know someone teaching at Iowa State in Ames? Steve King's district isn't 100% farmland. Anyone in your phonebook from Sioux City? Mason City? Forest City? Rockwell City? How about Fort Dodge or Pocahontas? For J.D. to win today, he's going to need votes from all those places. Think! Anyone? A sister's old boyfriend? The coach of your high school basketball team?

Maybe coach moved to Kansas, not Iowa. James Thomson's district is mostly Wichita and Sedgewick County but he's going to need whatever votes he can pick up in Eureka, Howard nd Sedan in the east, Kinsley, Greensburg, Goldwater in the west and towns like Kingman, Medicine Lodge and Winfield in between.

That leaves us with the toughest district we're trying to flip this cycle, WV-01 (PVI R+19), where Kendra Fershee is running a progressive campaign in a district where Bernie did incredibly well. It includes Wheeling, Parkersburg and Morgantown (West Virginia University's Evansdale campus). Maybe an old babysitter? I used to volunteer at a People for the American Way office and I met a young woman there who helped me figure out what I was doing. She lives in that district now. In fact... she's the candidate!

A friend of mine, Richard Foos, worked with his wife and Ted Lieu and another friend of ours, Jody Uttal, and me, to put on a fundraising event for Ammar Campa-Najjar and Randy Bryce. We raised them each some money but that didn't feel proactive enough for Richard. He wanted to do something way more visceral. So... he called a dozen friends, printed up some voter guides and called up Katie Hill's campaign manager and offered to stand outside a dozen polling places and hand out the guides. He's done it before-- and it works, especially well for down-ballot candidates and propositions on the ballot. I asked him to explain what it's like doing this kind of volunteer work. He told me he believes "that the most effective thing we can do today is to work at a polling place with a three fold plus purpose.
1) hand out voter guides for the congressional Dems (not as important for the congressional race, but very important for down ballot candidates, non-partisan candidates and propositions.
2) Catch any voter irregularities by ensuring all Dems successfully voted on the way out of the polls.
3) Check the voter roles which are posted inside the polling place every couple hours and tell headquarters who has not voted yet so that they can get their GOTV team to remind the ones who didn't vote to do so.
I am going to be doing it for Katie Hill’s campaign and if interested email jake@katiehillforcongress.com/ Otherwise call your local Dem office or congressional candidate’s campaign headquarters."

VCU Rams Men's Basketball Preview      Cache   Translate Page

After crushing UVA-Wise by the score of 87-41 in a preseason exhibition game at the Siegel Center, on Oct. 30, Mike Rhoades knew better than to dwell too much on how pleased he was with his team's performance. After all, record-wise, VCU's men's head basketball coach knew it was a meaningless outing. So did the players. Nonetheless, entering his second campaign on West Broad Street, Coach Rhoades had to enjoy showing Rams fans that this team seems deeper than last season's 18-15 squad.

Rhoades' 2018-19 Rams don't have an established star player, as last year's team did with Justin Tillman, who was named to the all-Atlantic 10 first-team. Yet, at first glance, VCU appears to be blessed with a higher level of overall athleticism this year. That factor will be on display in the Rams regular season opener, on Nov. 6, when they host the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb from the Big South Conference (7 p.m., MASN).

Five returning players started the exhibition game: De'Riante Jenkins, 6-5; Sean Mobley, 6-8; Malik Crowfield 6-4; Marcus Santos-Silva, 6-7; Issac Vann, 6-6. In particular, Jenkins and Santos-Silva turned in solid performances. Running at point guard, Crowfield was steady. He will likely be counted on to fill in with that role until Marcus Evans, 6-2, fully recovers from surgeries on both Achilles tendons.

Evans sat out last year, having transferred from Rice, where he played for two seasons under Rhoades. Averaging 20.1 points per game, Evans was an all-Conference USA selection in both of those years before transferring to VCU. Asked when he will be ready to play, Rhoades said, “Sooner than later.”

Corey Douglas, 6-8, a transfer from Tallahassee CC, also played briefly for Rhoades at Rice, before receiving a medical redshirt from the NCAA. In 15 minutes on the floor Douglas scored 10 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked four shots.

Of the newcomers a second name pops off of the game's statistics sheet – KeShawn Curry, 6-4, who also came off the bench for 15 minutes. He scored 15 points, got four rebounds and made three steals. After the game, De'Riante Jenkins chuckled as he suggested that Curry's contributions were, “just a sneak peak.”

Rhoades has said he wants to use 10 or 11 players in his regular rotation. Look for both Douglas, a sophomore, and Curry, a freshman, to press the returning starters for minutes of playing time.

The coach expressed his hope that this team's depth will allow for a more aggressive defense, especially in the paint. “If you don't play 'D,'” Rhoades said, “the bench is an awesome teacher.”

In its 13-game schedule prior to commencing with 18 conference games, VCU will need its apparent upgrade in depth and athleticism in two noteworthy road games. They are Texas on Dec. 5 and (No. 5) Virginia on Dec. 9. On Dec. 22, the Rams will be visited by Wichita State. All three of those opponents are regular participants in the NCAA postseason championship tournament.

In the A-10's preseason media poll VCU was tapped as No. 7 in the conference, which is understandable for a team that lost 44 percent of its scoring and 46 percent of its rebounding from three players who graduated.

Prior to last season VCU went to seven straight NCAA postseason tournaments. The Rams have notched 18 consecutive seasons with winning records. But Coach Rhoades is well aware that his won/loss mark in his first season guiding the VCU program was the worst in that string. Speaking of records, when the Rams face the Runnin' Bulldogs VCU hopes to record its 118th straight sell-out.

Fifty Years Ago This Week in West Rome - 11/11/1968 to 11/17/1968      Cache   Translate Page
Romans awoke to surprise snow flurries on Monday morning, November 11th, and continued off and on through the day and into the early evening. Minor accumulations of up to 1/2"  were reported in some parts of Floyd County, and there were no cancellations or travel advisories--but there were a few minor traffic accidents caused by the light snow on wet pavement, and one Roman slipped and fell while attempting to gather enough snow to make snow cream.

Roger Weaver was once again tapped as the Rome News-Tribune's Player of the Week for his outstanding performance in the East Rome game. The paper referred to this as "Weaver's finest hour...  There's no doubt that he was the sparkplug that enabled West Rome to end its season on a  winning note." He carried the football 34 times during the game and gained 291 net yards, the best single-game performance by any area back during the season.

Kippy Scarborough and Janice Crider represented West Rome in the Rome Junior Miss Pageant, held on Saturday night at the Rome City Auditorium--and Scarborough was the winner, assuming the title of Floyd County June Miss. Scarborough, a senior at West Rome, was a majorette for four years, a solo twirler for two years, and a member of senior band, Student Council, Tri-Hi-Y, and Drama Club. She was also convention chairman for the Georgia Association of Student Councils.

If you grew up in West Rome, you became very familiar with the "fragrance" of Georgia Kraft (now Inland Container). Their rotten-egg smell of the paper mill frequently wafted across the area when the winds were right, and pretty much no air filtration could keep it out of West Rome homes and businesses. Georgia Kraft insisted that their four recovery units, designed to minimize emissions from the plant, actually reduced the smoke and stink by at least 80%--and to demonstrate how effective it was, the facility turned off just one of the four recovery units on Thursday, November 14th, for about an hour. The immediate result? The light white smoke emitted from the stacks was replaced with a dark, heavy smoke, and the smell increased dramatically. Apparently "See? We could be even worse" was the closest thing to clean air that West Romans could hope for...

After almost a decade of planning and construction, the final segment of the East Rome Interchange was completed. This link extended from Maple Road to Walker Mountain Road, a distance of 2.9 miles, and it cost almost $1.2 million to construct. The interchange, greatly improved traffic flow from Rome to Cedartown--and to the soon-to-be-constructed Floyd Junior College.

With the bond issue a done deal, the Georgia Board of Regents gave official approval to the contract for the construction of a junior college in the Rome area. Plans called for the school to be finished by the fall of 1969.

Harvest Festival Days took place from Thursday through Saturday, offering an array of shopping bargains from stores across Rome and Floyd County, with a particular emphasis on Christmas season shopping. Every retail store on Broad Street announced special sales to commemorate the event, reminding readers that even with large discount department stores coming to Rome (read "Big K"), Broad Street still offered the best selection and great bargains.

Piggly Wiggly  had chuck roast for 39¢ a pound, Maxwell House coffee for 50¢ a pound, and Coca-Cola for 33¢ a 6-bottle carton (plus deposit). Kroger had Cudahy Bar-S bacon for 49¢ a pound, bread for 18¢ a loaf, and oranges for 8¢ each. A&P had sirloin steak for 99¢ a pound, Ann Page salad dressing for 49¢ a quart,  and large eggs for 49¢ a dozen. Big Apple had ground beef for 49¢ a pound, Duke mayonnaise for 49¢ a quart, and a five-pound bag of Dixie Crystals sugar for 39¢. Couch's had chicken livers for 49¢ a pound, Bama jellies for a quarter a jar (and you could use the jar as a drinking glass when you finished up the jelly!), and bananas for a dime a pound.

The cinematic week began with The Paper Lion (starring Alan Alda) at the DeSoto Theatre, The Fox (starring Sandy Dennis) at the First Avenue and Young Runaways (starring Brooke Bundy) at the West Rome Drive-In. The midweek switchout brought The Boston Strangler (starring Tony Curtis) to the DeSoto Theatre, Helga (an adults-only film starring unknown Ruth Gasseman) to the First Avenue, and Five Card Stud (starring Dean Martin) to the West Rome Drive-In.

The Beatles' "Hey Jude" held the number slot for the ninth week in a row, while Diana Ross & the Supremes' "Love Child climbed to #2 this week in 1968. Other top ten hits included "Those Were the Days" by Mary Hopkin (#3); "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf (#4); "Abraham, Martin, & John" by Dion (#5); "White Room" by Cream (#6); "Hold Me Tight" by Johnny Nash (#7); "Who's Making Love" by Johnnie Taylor (#8); "Little Green Apples" by OC Smith (#9); and "Wichita Lineman" by Glen Campbell (#10).

On Sunday, November 17th, NBC broke away from the Oakland Raiders-New York Jets football game at 7pm, with less than a minute to play in the game, to begin their much-advertised TV movie adaptation of Heidi. Unfortunately for NBC, the Raiders managed to score two touchdowns in that final minute and thus won the game--and none of the TV viewers got to see it. The game became known as "The Heidi Bowl," and as a result, non-sports viewers have had to put up with their TV shows being pushed back by slow-play sporting events ever since...

Couple gets life sentences in torture killing of Kansas man
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - A couple has received the maximum sentence for torturing and killing a Kansas man in a crime that the judge called "horrific beyond imagination."

Jeff and Heidi Hillard were recently convicted of participating in the November 2016 killing of 33-year-old Scottie Goodpaster Jr. of Wichita. Both were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 50 years.

Prosecutors say Goodpaster and a woman were kidnapped because of $185 in missing drug money. Goodpaster was attacked at a home in Valley Center with an ax, knife and staple gun, and suffered genital injuries. His body was found hanging from a tree six days later.

Jeff Hillard was sentenced to another 27 ½ years for other crimes, while Heidi HIllard received an additional 44 ½ years. Those sentences will run consecutively to the life sentences.

Attorneys for both defendants say they will appeal the sentences.

Through her career she’s generally created her own art as she created acquaint and pursued her own education.

Morrison confused to Casper to advise grade-school art and became the aboriginal art abecedary at the then-newly congenital Kelly Walsh Aerial School. She afterwards helped architecture and was the administrator of the Discovery Centermost for accouchement at the Nicolaysen Art Museum.

What’s apprenticed her to actualize is the aforementioned afflatus that she’s formed to advance in the acceptance she’s taught, from preschoolers to aerial academy students.

“We are all built-in with the congenital admiration to draw and accurate ourselves visually,” Morrison said.

Life of art

Morrison’s academy had no art classes while she grew up during the Abundant Depression on a aureate acreage in Clearwater, Kansas. But she consistently enjoyed drawing, she said.

She advised home economics and autogenous decorating at Kansas State University. Her aboriginal teaching job was at a inferior aerial academy in a low-income breadth of Wichita, Kansas, breadth the acceptance were at-risk academically and socially, Morrison said. Teaching them started the foundation of what would become her own teaching philosophies, aggressive by an art administrator at the school, she said.

“I abstruse so abundant aloof because of acknowledgment to them and of advance the art administrator who formed into us it’s so important to activate and actuate and encourage,” Morrison said. “And you never do it by saying, ‘Oh, well, you charge to do this differently, you charge to accomplish that attending added real.’ Because that is what squelches our congenital creativity.”

She accustomed in Casper in 1960 to become an elementary art abecedary traveling to altered schools. Later, she became the art abecedary at KW the year it was built. In those days, women who were abundant weren’t accustomed to teach, so she had to abdicate afterwards her babe was on the way.

As she aloft her daughter, Morrison became complex in teaching and alive with preschool children. She advised development of accouchement and the way they actualize art at anniversary stage.

She adored abounding of her daughter’s assets to use as examples for workshops she’d afterwards accord at the Discovery Center.

“I had preschool, I had workshops for agents of how to advance art and workshops on how to accommodate art in the chic but consistently befitting it creative,” Morrison said. “That has consistently been basal line.”

The Discovery Centermost took basis aback again lath affiliate Margo Bean anticipation of a children’s building to add to the circling of shows. It was so acknowledged they absitively to appoint adolescent lath affiliate Morrison to run a new children’s center.

“I don’t apperceive anyone abroad who has such a affection for art and accouchement and that combination,” Bean said, “and it was the absolute atom for her at the absolute time for the art museum.”

When the building confused to its accepted home on Collins Drive, they advised a abstracted children’s breadth alleged the Discovery Center.

Morrison brought account from museums she visited, forth with her abundant energy, Bean said.

“She admired children, and she was so optimistic and peppy, and she accepted what accouchement adulation as able-bodied as absolutely alive the absolute the basics of art so that she was laying a foundation for them,” Bean said. “Just I anticipate that accepted adeptness to transform those above aspects of art into children’s activities was a astounding allowance that she had.”

Retired Natrona County Aerial Academy art abecedary Pat Hopkins was a apprentice of Morrison afore he accelerating from KW in 1967.

“I bethink that she was actual agog about aggregate that we did,” Hopkins said. “And that if you had an idea, you had a concept, you capital to do something, you capital to accurate article she was all over facilitating that and authoritative abiding you had a adventitious to clear what abstraction you capital to get out there.”

The acceptance had a adventitious to try altered mediums, genres and styles. He’d never done copse abstraction before, but he begin himself one day in chic with accoutrement and mallets in his hands, he recalled.

“I’ve never done copse abstraction since, but she was aflame about it and got me aflame about it,” he said.

Hopkins went on to advise art for 23 years at NC and credits Morrison’s chic in ample allotment for alarming his career best and the way he taught. He formed to appearance the aforementioned affection for art Morrison brought to her students.

“She was so aflame about what she was teaching,” he said. “She was so absorbed in what you capital to analyze that it was infectious. So she aloof created a abundant classroom environment.”

Born to create

Though her years of teaching, Morrison created her own art.

Seeing her appearance at Art 321 brought aback memories for Hopkins. Agents analyze a array of art mediums and styles to be accomplished in what they’re teaching, he said.

“The aboriginal affair that addled me was the assortment of her appearance — all the altered mediums and styles and approaches that she has explored,” Hopkins said.

The appearance includes landscapes of the Casper breadth and Wyoming, including a watercolor of Union Lake that she corrective anon afterwards affective to Wyoming. A brace paintings characterize skiing, one of her admired pastimes she’s in Wyoming, she said.

Some of her added contempo art includes prints fabricated by abrading ink on angle and laying them on paper, a address that started in Japan.

She’s created woodblock prints and copse sculptures. Her abstraction accoutrement blow on affectation abreast a board carve of an abstruse fish.

It’s affectionate of a awe-inspiring fish, she said. But she’s never been afraid about accuracy in art.

“That’s why children’s art has consistently been so ambrosial to me,” she said. “It was, ‘Draw whatever you see or feel,’ in whatever the affair was, ‘and don’t anguish one bit about authoritative it attending real.’”

Many of the pieces in the Art 321 appearance were assignments in master’s amount akin art apprenticeship classes she took to advance her teaching certifications. Though she didn’t alpha a thesis, she took all the appropriate classes for the degree.

“I accept all that acquaintance and observation, aloof to appearance that’s what I accomplished — we are all built-in to be artistic,” Morrison said. “And this affair of, ‘Oh, you accept to be talented,’ it’s a agglomeration of baloney.”

It’s accustomed to see shapes in clouds or use acuteness to actualize art, which has annihilation to do with talent, she said. That has annihilation to do with congenital ability. Abounding bodies through the years accept mentioned her aesthetic talent, she said, but she’s advised children’s aesthetic development and acquirements to admit talent.

“And attending aback at my aboriginal assets … I’m absolutely not accomplished at all,” she said.

“So what I’m adage is it all goes aback to: We are all built-in with the congenital admiration to draw and accurate ourselves visually,” she added. “And no developed should say, ‘Oh you charge to do this or that to accomplish it attending added real.’”

One allotment of old, askance copse in the appearance charcoal clear by her tools. She begin it while hiking a brace years ago and leaned it adjoin a arcade bank afraid with her art, aloof for fun, she said.

“But you can attending at it,” she said in a hushed voice. “And you can brainstorm all kinds of things. Can’t you? I’m not abiding what I’ll anytime do with it. I may aloof leave it like that and say, ‘Figure out yourself what it is. Name it yourself.’ It’s the aforementioned assumption that we all accept done (as) kids. You bethink attractive up at clouds and imagining. … It’s aloof natural.”

Elections Over, Thank Goodness      Cache   Translate Page
Congratulations to the winners of the election.
Laura Kelly, Kansas Governor-Elect
I'm always amused by the "what's the matter with Kansas" types who, against all evidence, believe Kansas to be Republican backwater. We elected a female Democratic governor last night (two of our last three gubernatorial administrations have been Democrats) and the first openly lesbian and first native American member of the U.S. House. We are tolerant, open-minded people.

I am a proud Kansan and if you are looking for opportunity there about a thousand great jobs open in the greater Wichita area. Come and check us out!
