Sarfraz determined to break New Zealand jinx       Cache   Translate Page

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed insists his team can end an 11-match losing run to New Zealand when the two sides meet in the first one-day international in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

Pakistan crushed New Zealand 3-0 in the preceding Twenty20 series on Sunday — their second whitewash in a week following a romp over Australia, also in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

But Sarfraz, part of the team in the last 11 one-day internationals all of which Pakistan lost, wants to finally win against New Zealand.

“It's important to break that losing streak and we need to bring improvement in our performance in one-day internationals,” said Sarfraz on Tuesday.

Pakistan lost the last two matches in a 3-2 series defeat in United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2014, before losing 2-0 in 2015, 2-0 in 2016 and 5-0 in January 2018 — all in New Zealand.

“If you look at our losses most of them were in New Zealand where conditions were different and we lost due to top order failure where we need to improve,” said Sarfraz.

Pakistan also failed to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup held in UAE two months ago, losing both their matches against arch-rivals India and going down to Bangladesh in a clash which decided the finalist.

India won the Asia Cup by beating Bangladesh.

Sarfraz said a tough opponent in New Zealand — ranked third to Pakistan's fifth in one-day standings — will help the team build for next year's World Cup in England.

“New Zealand is a good team of this format but we have momentum of the Twenty20 series so we must win this series and that will help towards building towards the World Cup,” said Sarfraz.

The last two matches are in Abu Dhabi (Friday) and in Dubai (Sunday).

Pakistan then play South Africa in South Africa, Australia (in UAE) and England in England -- five one-day internationals each — before the World Cup.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson played down the winning streak against Pakistan, saying it will be a new series.

“It's a new series and a fresh start,” said Williamson. “I guess it's a nice statistic to have but at the end of the day, come tomorrow, its a new series.” Williamson praised Pakistan as a limited over side.

“They are always a strong side and no matter the format,” said Williamson. “They have a lot of depth. We simply know they have been here for some time and they know these conditions and they have had lots of success. We are in here for a tough battle.”

New Zealand will welcome pace spearhead Trent Boult who missed the Twenty20 series due to personal reasons while also adding batsman George Worker and spinner Ajaz Patel (as a cover for injured Todd Astle) in the squad.

Teams

China gave foreign countries and journalists seminars on how to restrict online speech and unflattering news reports      Cache   Translate Page

  • China has been hosting seminars for foreign countries and journalists on how to clamp down on online speech and writing positive news about China's economic policies, Freedom House reported.
  • They include courses on President Xi Jinping's views on patriotism and tours of companies that monitor negative public opinion in the country.
  • Many of them catered to countries that are part of China's Belt and Road Initiative, a massive infrastructure project that aims to link 70 countries around the world.
  • Those courses appeared to work on some of the countries, who issued laws clamping down on online speech after attending the seminars.
  • China has a long record of muzzling free speech in the country.
  • It wields a lot of soft power over its economic allies, largely because of its financial investments around the world.

China has been holding seminars for foreign countries and journalists on how to restrict online speech and write positive news about it, according to a Freedom House report published this week.

The programs — which appear tailored to specific countries and regions — included courses like "socialist journalism with Chinese characteristics" and a class on "the Chinese Dream," Freedom House said.

Those two slogans were popularized under President Xi Jinping, and lay out his view of patriotism and innovation as long as it does not defy the Chinese Communist Party.

The programs appeared to be marketed to countries involved in China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a massive infrastructure project launched in 2013 that aims to link China to more than 70 countries across Asia, Europe, and Africa.

It is one of President Xi Jinping's pet projects, and Beijing has invested between $1 trillion and $8 trillion in those projects since 2013, according to the Center for Strategic and International StudiesMultiple BRI partners have racked up billions of dollars in debt because they couldn't afford to repay China's loans on infrastructure projects.

Here are some of the seminars China hosted over the past year, according to Freedom House.

  • November 2017: A two-week "Seminar on Cyberspace Management for Officials of Countries along the Belt and Road Initiative," where officials toured a company — unnamed in in the report — that monitored, using big data, negative public opinion, and created a "positive energy public-opinion guidance system."
  • May 2018: Prominent journalists and media officials from the Philippines visited China for two weeks to learn about "new media development." What this means exactly is not clear.
  • A similar conference for media staff in Thailand taught attendees about the "Chinese Dream" and how media outlets can report domestic and international affairs, including China's economic development. The date of this conference is not clear.
  • Representatives from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates also attended a three-week "Seminar for Senior Media Staff in Arab Countries" at an unspecified date.

Details about what actually happens during those seminars are scant. But pictures published by the Chinese ministry of commerce of a seminar on the "promotion of international cooperation," held last August for 43 officials from BRI countries, showed delegates attending a lecture by Chinese officials and receiving a "graduation certificate" at the end.

China flexes its soft power

Those seminars appeared to work on the foreign countries.

After Vietnamese officials attended China's seminar on media management in April 2017, it introduced a cybersecurity law that ordered global tech companies — such as Google and Facebook — to store personal data of users in Vietnam in the country.

Uganda and Tanzania also introduced similar laws clamping down on online media dissemination after their officials attended China's seminars over the past year, Freedom House said.

It echoed existing cybersecurity laws in China, which order tech companies to store personal and financial data collected in the country within its borders.

Chinese authorities have previously demanded domestic tech companies to hand over user data and the contents of private conversations.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Public Security announced that law-enforcement officers could obtain and use private conversations on popular messaging app WeChat in legal proceedings.

Beijing has repeatedly proven the strength of its soft power, much of which stems from its immense economic power around the world.

Taiwan also claims that China uses economic partnerships to pressure countries to cut off diplomatic ties with it. Beijing insists that Taiwan is part of China, while Taipei recognizes itself as an independent nation.

Australia's former foreign minister, Julie Bishop, also revealed earlier this week that Australia did not strike a trade deal with Taiwan because her counterpart Wang Yi simply told her not to. China is Australia's largest trading partner, top export market, and biggest import source.

China also clamps down on online speech and thought within the country. Law-enforcement authorities have muzzled free speech in the past by censoring posts and forcefully disappearing people seen to speak out against the regime.

It also ranks citizens' behavior on a social credit system, which doles out punishments and rewards depending on the individual's score.

Crown Prince Launches Saudi Arabia's First Nuclear Reactor On Very Day Sanctions Hit Iran      Cache   Translate Page

In but the latest after an insane month of news featuring the kingdom since the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the AP reports Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman laid the ceremonial foundation stone for Saudi Arabia's first nuclear research reactor on Monday.

The site is the first of 16 planned reactor sites to be built over the next two decades, and is raising fears that it could mark the start of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East, especially given the timing as November 5th was the very day severe U.S. sanctions on Iran targeting the energy industry took effect, precisely over the White House accusation that it is not serious about de-nuclearization.

MbS at the inaugural ceremony on Monday. Image source: SPA

The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported that the reactor is part of seven major projects launched as he visited Riyadh’s King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology. The kingdom is seeking to diversify the way it meets its energy needs, currently driven by oil and gas. The SPA report did not indicate when the research reactor would go online, but did mention it is the start of a 20-year, $80bn project to build 16 nuclear reactors

According to a joint AP/Times of Israel report

Prince Mohammed said in March that if Iran develops a nuclear weapon, Riyadh will do so too. In an interview with CBS television, he likened regional rival Iran’s supreme leader to Hitler, saying he “wants to create his own project in the Middle East.”

Riyadh held deep reservations over the 2015 accord aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions and hailed US President Donald Trump’s announcement in May that the United States was withdrawing from the deal.

During that CBS/60 Minutes interview MbS said"Saudi Arabia doesn’t want to own a nuclear bomb. But without a doubt, if Iran develops a nuclear bomb, we will follow suit as soon as possible.”

No doubt the symbolism of MbS laying the foundation stone for the kingdom's first nuclear reactor on the very day aggressive sanctions on Iran snapped back will not be lost of Tehran.

Given the timing it appears the Saudis were positively celebrating the sanctions and even provoking Iran. All of this means that the nuclear arms race between Iran and Saudi Arabia is officially on, even as much of the Middle East and the world is spotlighting the crimes  of both. However, it will likely come slowly at first and under the guise of "peaceful" energy development of a "research" nature.

And guess which Western country is inking deals with the Saudis for nuclear reactors? We don't expect the global outrage over the murder of Jamal Khashoggi to ultimately halt such deals, even if they slow for the time being. The AP reports:

Trump reportedly refused a March request by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a commitment to halting an emerging deal to sell further nuclear reactors to Saudi Arabia, telling the prime minister that if the US did not supply the reactors, then the Russians or Chinese would.

Netanyahu and his team reportedly requested that, if the Americans insist on going ahead with building reactors, Saudi Arabia be prevented from enriching uranium by itself.

Currently, the only Arab Gulf country to have previously launched a nuclear power project is the United Arab Emirates, which is constructing four South Korea-designed reactors.

Meanwhile Iran has long claimed its own nuclear initiatives were purely to pursue energy needs much like the Gulf countries are seeking to diversify away from sole reliance on oil and gas. While the West has always refused to take Tehran's word for it, it will be interesting to see if there's any eventual shift in opinion concerning the Saudis' pursuit of large reactors given the current scrutiny over the kingdom's dismal human rights record in the wake of the Khashoggi affair.

Is The Anti-Iran Front Still Viable?      Cache   Translate Page

Israel’s current preoccupation with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and the Jamal Khashoggi murder in Istanbul, have diverted attention from the nefarious activities carried out by the Islamic Republic of Iran throughout the Middle East, and particularly in Syria.  For now, the above developments have put on hold the anti-Iran alliance the Trump administration has been pressing for last month, and has given the Iranian regime a respite.  The downing of the Russian spy plane over Syria by the Assad regime, which was initially blamed on Israel, has impacted somehow on the previous understanding between Israel and Putin’s Russia.  In the meantime, Russia has supplied the Assad regime with the S-300 Missile defense system. Israel has significantly reduced its operations in Syria, which enabled Iran to increase its activities inside Syria, and foment trouble in Gaza.

The recently imposed U.S. sanctions against Iran have had a deleterious impact on the Iranian economy.  It has placed the regime of the Ayatollahs in a defensive mode.  A second wave of U.S. sanctions commenced on November 5th, 2018, targeting Iran’s energy, shipping, and shipbuilding sectors, as well as transactions with the Central Bank of Iran.  The aim of this set of sanctions is to deprive the Iranian regime of funds to advance their nuclear program, and the development of ballistic missiles.  The Iranian people, in an unprecedented wave of protests that spread throughout Iran’s major cities, and in spite of severe consequences, demanded that the regime invest in Iran, and the Iranian people.  The protesters charged the regime with enabling the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) to waste the nation’s oil revenue and the $150 billion it received as a “bonus” from the Obama administration (for agreeing to sign the nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) on imperial schemes.  They have argued that the money should be invested at home instead of spending it in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and Yemen.

The Saudi-Qatari rift has also hampered the creation of a unified anti-Iranian bloc.  It has weakened the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).  The Qataris are now allied with Turkey.  Ankara has sent an expeditionary force of 3,000 strong to Doha and in return, received $15 billion from Qatar to cover its swollen debt.  The Saudis have accused Qatar of supporting terrorism, and in fact the Doha regime has been a staunch supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, including Hamas in Gaza.  Turkey’s dictator, Erdogan, has been flirting with Russia and Iran, and has openly exhibited his anti-western sentiments.  He has purchased from Russia the S-400 surface-to-air missiles, and helped Iran launder its oil revenue.  In the initial Trump administration calculation, Turkey was meant to be a part of the anti-Iran coalition, along with Israel and the Gulf states.  Instead, Erdogan is currently busy with embarrassing the Saudis over the Khashoggi murder at the Saudi embassy in Istanbul.

The Islamic Republic is worried that the U.S. might join Israel in its efforts to expel the Iranian extensive presence in Syria.  Iran however, is using this window of opportunity when Israel is limiting its attacks on Iranian targets in Syria, and the U.S. being preoccupied with the mid-term elections, to provide Hezbollah with sophisticated guidance systems that would improve the accuracy of the missiles aimed at Israel.  According to a western intelligence officer, “The Iranians are trying to come up with new ways and routes to smuggle weapons from Iran to its allies in the Middle East, testing and defying the West’s abilities to track them down.”

For too long, the U.S. refrained from confronting the Iranian regime, out of hope that inaction against the Iranian regime would empower the purported moderates in Tehran.  The previous U.S. administration also held an overriding desire to wash its hands of the Middle East.  This entrenchment however, has only encouraged the Ayatollahs regime inherently maligned behavior, including its periodic testing to the limits of the nuclear deal, continued progress on advanced centrifuges, ballistic missile testing, and regional expansion.  In addition, the Tehran regime supports terrorism and the propagation of virulent anti-American ideology.  Ironically, many of these actions make the regime increasingly unpopular at home, and overextended abroad.

According to the U.S. State Department Executive Summary report titled “An Outlaw Regime: A Chronicle of Iran’s Destructive Activities, “The regime’s primary tool to execute this mission since 1979 has been the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC is the most powerful conglomerate in Iran, spreading and consolidating its control over much of Iranian life. Its navy regularly threatens freedom of navigation in the Persian Gulf while its Aerospace Force directs the country’s ballistic missile program in defiance of Security Council resolutions. Its Ground Forces are deployed abroad to bolster the Assad regime and its Basij paramilitary force is mobilized at home to surveil and harass ordinary Iranians. Finally, its extra-territorial IRGC Quds Force (IRGC-QF) leads the Islamic Republic’s destabilizing support for proxies and terrorist groups.”

The Islamic Republic’s illicit activities include undermining the integrity of the global financial system.  The Iranian regime relies on opaque and fraudulent financing activities to fund its proxies and support its proliferation of ballistic missiles and other weapons.  Last year, the IRGC-Quds Force was exposed for using front companies to move funds, procure restricted materials and technologies, exploit currency exchange networks in neighboring countries, and produce counterfeit currency.

Iran’s repeated and systemic abuse of human rights is in violation of international laws and norms.  It persecutes civil society activists and marginalizes ethnic and religious minorities.  The Ayatollah regime denies due process, and regularly falls short of its own legal standards. Its prisons are notorious for mistreatment and torture, and its use of capital punishment is excessive and extends to minors.  Outside its borders, Iran and its proxies have committed numerous human rights abuses, including targeting innocent civilians in Syria, and arbitrarily detaining Sunnis in Iraq.

Last September in New York, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with the foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain, to advance what the administration coined as the “Arab NATO.”  Secretary Pompeo stressed the need to defeat the Islamic State, and other terrorist organizations, as well as ending the conflicts in Syria and Yemen, and “stopping Iran’s malign activity in the region.”  Unfortunately, President Trump’s willingness to remain engaged in the Middle East following the defeat of the Islamic State is questionable.  The burden of compelling Iran to roll back its regional presence, especially in Syria, and interdicting Iran’s military supplies to Hezbollah in Lebanon, falls primarily on Israel’s shoulders.  Saudi Arabia and the Emirates are involved in confronting Iran’s weapons proliferation in Yemen.  U.S. involvement in the anti-Iran alliance is limited to partnering with the Kurds on the ground in Syria and Iraq.  The latter presents a significant obstacle to Iran’s ambitions to dominate both Syria and Iraq.

Without strong military backing from the U.S., Israel might be constrained by Russia from freely operating in Syria against Iran.  The Khashoggi murder, as contemptible as it was, must be put behind us, and allow the Saudis and the UAE to focus on Iran.  The rest of the Sunni Arab states are unlikely to contribute to the anti-Iran alliance, and Turkey’s support in such an alliance is certainly not forthcoming.  The U.S. envisioned anti-Iran coalition can only become a viable reality if the U.S. is ready to actively participate, and commit its military might only when it becomes necessary.

UAE catching up with M’sia as centre of global Islamic economy      Cache   Translate Page
PETALING JAYA: United Arab Emirates (UAE) is fast catching up with Malaysia as the centre of the global Islamic economy, according to new research.

The “State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2018/19” is commissioned by the Dubai Islamic Economy Development Centre (DIEDC) and produced by Thomson Reuters.

The Islamic economy is the Muslim-majority countries that have financial sectors and economies which comply with Islamic law.

“Although Malaysia once again tops the Global Islamic Economy Indicator, the UAE ranks in first place across the remaining five sectors — halal food, halal travel, modest fashion, halal media and recreation, and halal pharmaceuticals and cosmetics — compared to three sectors in 2017/18,” the research said.

The report evaluates the quality of the overall Islamic economy ecosystem, CNBC reported today.

“The Islamic economy sector has grown in importance over the last few years, and the year-on-year growth has been quite significant,” it quoted Abdulla Mohammed Al Awar, the CEO of the Dubai Islamic Economy Development Centre, as saying.

The centre aims to make Dubai the global capital for the Islamic economy, and position Dubai as a leading engine of Islamic finance and a solutions provider for the halal industry, the report added.

European signatories to Iran nuclear deal condemn new US sanctions-France, UK, Germany and EU ‘deeply regret’ American measures, call accord ‘essential for the security of Europe, the region and the whole world’-By AFP-5 November 2018

PARIS — France, Germany, Britain and the European Union issued a joint condemnation Friday of the US move to place fresh sanctions on the Iranian economy, vowing to protect European companies doing “legitimate” business with Tehran.“We deeply regret the reimposition of sanctions by the United States stemming from their withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action,” the statement said in reference to the hard-fought 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.Struck between world powers and Tehran after years of fraught negotiations, the deal was aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear capabilities in exchange for sanctions relief. But US President Donald Trump announced in May that he was walking away from the deal and would reimpose sanctions, leaving the EU scrambling to protect companies that have forged trade links with Iran.Friday’s statement from EU nations defended the deal as “essential for the security of Europe, the region and the whole world.”“Our objective is to protect European economic actors involved in legitimate commercial trade with Iran,” it added.Europe will also seek to “maintain financial channels operational with Iran and to ensure the continuation of Iranian oil and gas exports,” it said.US officials said Friday that Washington was adding 700 individuals and entities to its Iran blacklist and pressuring the global SWIFT banking network to cut off Tehran when expanded sanctions are put in place next week.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the sanctions were aimed at getting Tehran to halt its nuclear activities and what the US says is broad support for terrorism in the region. The EU says 12 consecutive reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency show that Iran has stuck to the terms of the deal.

US reimposes all sanctions on Iran lifted under nuclear deal-Pompeo says new measures aimed at forcing Tehran to give up ‘its well-documented outlaw activities,’ grants temporary waivers to 8 countries-By Matthew Lee-TOI-5 November 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration on Friday announced the reimposition of all US sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, ramping up economic pressure on the Islamic Republic as President Donald Trump completed the unraveling of what had been one of his predecessor’s signature foreign policy achievements. The sanctions, which will take effect on Monday, cover Iran’s shipping, financial and energy sectors and are the second batch the administration has reimposed since Trump withdrew from the landmark accord in May. The rollback ends US participation in the nuclear deal, which now hangs in the balance as Iran no longer enjoys any relief from sanctions imposed by the world’s largest economy.Shortly after the announcement, Trump tweeted a movie poster-like image of himself walking out of what appears to be fog with the phrase “Sanctions are Coming, November 5.”With limited exceptions, the sanctions will hit countries that do not stop importing Iranian oil and foreign firms that do business with blacklisted Iranian entities, including its central bank, a number of private financial institutions, and state-run port and shipping firms, as well as hundreds of individual Iranian officials.pic.twitter.com/nk2vKvHuaL— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 2, 2018-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the sanctions are “aimed at fundamentally altering the behavior of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He has issued a list of 12 demands that Iran must meet if it wants the sanctions lifted. Those include ending support for terrorism and military engagement in Syria and a complete halt to its nuclear and ballistic missile development.“Our ultimate aim is to compel Iran to permanently abandon its well-documented outlaw activities and behave as a normal country,” Pompeo told reporters in a conference call with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. “Maximum pressure means maximum pressure.”Pompeo said eight nations will receive temporary waivers allowing them to continue to import Iranian petroleum products for a limited period as they move to end such imports entirely. He said those countries, which other officials said would include US allies such as Turkey, Italy, India, Japan and South Korea, had made efforts to eliminate their imports but could not complete the task by Monday. The waivers, expected to be announced Monday, will be valid for six months, during which time the importing country can buy Iranian oil but must deposit Iran’s revenue in an escrow account. Iran can spend the money but only on a narrow range of humanitarian items. Pompeo said two of the eight countries would wind down imports to zero within weeks.Mnuchin said 700 more Iranian companies and people would be added to the sanctions rolls. Those, he said, would include more than 300 that had not been included under previous sanctions.“We are sending a very clear message with our maximum pressure campaign: that the US intends to aggressively enforce our sanctions,” he said.Iran hawks in Congress and elsewhere were likely to be disappointed in the sanctions as they had been pushing for no oil import waivers as well as the complete disconnection of Iran from the main international financial messaging network known as SWIFT.One group that has been highly critical of the deal welcomed the new sanctions but said there should be no exceptions.“We encourage the Trump administration to fulfill the promise of a maximum pressure campaign — no exceptions — until Iran permanently and verifiably changes its behavior,” United Against a Nuclear Iran said in a statement. “Oil and gas firms, including those from friendly countries like India, South Korea and Japan, should not be granted sanctions waivers. Similarly, financial entities — including SWIFT — must sever ties with Iranian banks and financial institutions.”Mnuchin defended the decision to allow some Iranian banks to remain connected to SWIFT, saying that the Belgium-based firm had been warned that it will face penalties if sanctioned institutions are permitted to use it. And, he said that US regulators would be watching closely Iranian transactions that use SWIFT to ensure any that run afoul of US sanctions would be punished.Pompeo, meanwhile, defended the oil waivers, saying US efforts to cut Iran’s petroleum revenue had already been successful. He noted that since May, when the US began to press countries to stop buying Iranian oil, Iran’s exports had dropped by more than 1 million barrels per day.Pompeo and Mnuchin both said the sanctions will have exceptions for humanitarian purchases. The 2015 nuclear deal, one of former president Barack Obama’s signature foreign policy achievements, gave Iran billions of dollars in sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program, which many believed it was using to develop atomic weapons. Trump repeatedly denounced the agreement as the “worst ever” negotiated by the United States and vowed to withdraw from it during the 2016 presidential campaign.Trump and other critics of the deal said it gave Iran too much in return for too little, allowed Iran to gradually resume nuclear activity that could eventually be used for weapons development and did not address any of the country’s other problematic activities.Obama-era officials as well as the other parties to the deal — Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the European Union — have vehemently defended it. The Europeans have mounted a drive to save the agreement from the US withdrawal, fearing that the new sanctions will drive Iran to pull out and resume all of its nuclear work.

New defence for Infowars in copyright case? "Pepe the Toad"-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-November 5, 2018

The internet trolls who turned Pepe the Frog into a hate symbol may be disappointed to hear a new claim about the cartoon character's origins, courtesy of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' Infowars website .Infowars' attorneys claim in a court filing Thursday that Pepe the Frog creator Matt Furie based his character on a "pre-existing, strikingly similar" Argentine cartoon character named "El Sapo Pepe," or "Pepe the Toad."That's a new defence for Infowars against a copyright infringement lawsuit that Furie filed in March over the site's sales of a poster copying the character.Infowars' attorneys argue Furie could be precluded from asserting any copyright interest in his creation if Pepe the Frog is an "unauthorized derivative work" based on Pepe the Toad. Or it could "at least severely the scope of copyright protection in the character," they wrote."You've got to ask yourself if Mr. Furie's work is truly original," Infowars attorney Marc Randazza said during a telephone interview Friday. "I think it's at least worth taking a closer look."Louis Tompros, one of Furie's attorneys, said the California-based cartoonist had never heard of "El Sapo Pepe" before receiving a letter from Infowars's attorneys about it."So, it definitely did not inspire his creation of Pepe,' Tompros wrote in an email Friday.A federal judge set a July 2019 trial date for the lawsuit Furie filed against Infowars in Los Angeles. It was the second such case that Furie has brought as part of a legal campaign to reclaim his creation.Infowars' website is the online platform for right-wing radio host Jones. Furie's lawsuit says he didn't authorize the site to sell a poster that depicts the anthropomorphic frog alongside images of Jones, President Donald Trump, far-right agitator Milo Yiannopoulos and other right-wing figures.Jones has described the lawsuit as a "publicity stunt" and said he views it as an expression of political speech protected by the First Amendment."My listeners understand this is all frivolous," Jones told The Associated Press in March.Infowars was selling the Pepe-adorned "MAGA" poster for $29.95 and says it was created by "renowned artist and patriot" Jon Allen. Jones said Infowars has sold about 1,000 of the posters but added that it's hardly one of the site's most popular items.Furie's "chill frog-dude" debuted in a 2006 comic book called "Boy's Club" and became a popular canvas for benevolent internet memes. But the user-generated mutations grew increasingly hateful and ubiquitous more than a year before the 2016 presidential election, when Furie's creation become an online mascot for white nationalists, neo-Nazis and other right-wing extremists. The Anti-Defamation League branded Pepe as a hate symbol in September 2016 and promoted Furie's efforts to reclaim the character.Twitter banned Jones and Infowars from the social media platform earlier this year for abusive behaviour . Jones has been sued by targets of his conspiracy theories, including parents of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012. Jones questioned whether the shooting rampage was a hoax.Michael Kunzelman, The Associated Press.

GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Entering a modal-UN chief warns of famine in Yemen, urges halt to violence-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-November 5, 2018

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Friday that Yemen could face "the worst famine we have seen in decades" and urged the country's warring parties to immediately halt the violence. The UN chief told reporters "the urgency of the humanitarian crisis leaves no room for complacency" and the "building wave of momentum" for peace must be seized.UN humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock warned last week that "there is a clear and present danger of an imminent and great big famine engulfing Yemen" that could affect 14 million people — half of the country's population. The conflict began in 2014 when Houthi Shia rebels toppled the internationally recognized government. A Saudi-led coalition allied with the government has been fighting the Houthis since 2015.Guterres said more and more countries are engaged in helping create conditions for the warring parties to understand the need to cease hostilities and engage in serious negotiations. He urged the coalition and the Houthis "to overcome obstacles and resolve differences through dialogue" at UN facilitated talks later this month.Guterres stressed that "violence must stop everywhere — with an immediate halt around critical infrastructure and densely populated areas.""My objective is to appeal to the parties to the conflict to understand that there is an opportunity that must be seized, and to say that the humanitarian situation is so dire that if that doesn't happen" the world will have to deal with a famine in Yemen next year, he said."I must say, I hope the voice of reason will prevail," Guterres said.

Khashoggi crisis may tip Middle East power balance towards Turkey-October 2 killing inside Saudi consulate in Istanbul, by a team sent from Riyadh, has already severely tarnished Arab state’s reputation-By Ezzedine SAID-TOI-NOV 5,18

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AFP) — The murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi could alter the power dynamic in the Middle East by strengthening Turkey’s influence at Saudi Arabia’s expense as they compete for leadership of the Islamic world, analysts say. This certainly appears to be the goal of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the main regional supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, which Saudi Arabia and its allies Egypt and the United Arab Emirates consider a terrorist group. The killing inside the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul by a team sent from Riyadh on October 2 has already severely tarnished Saudi Arabia’s global reputation. But it is the potential involvement of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, the oil-rich Gulf nation’s de facto leader known by his initials MBS, that could permanently damage Riyadh’s influence in the region. After initially insisting Khashoggi left the consulate unharmed, then saying he died in a brawl, the Saudi regime finally stated he was killed by a “rogue operation” and arrested 18 suspects, some with links to the crown prince.Analysts say Erdogan could use the ensuing crisis to weaken the 33-year-old prince, even potentially leading to the royal family removing him from power — though that seems unlikely.“The killing of Khashoggi has proven to be a golden opportunity for President Erdogan to pressure Saudi Arabia and work towards presenting Turkey as the new leader of the Muslim world,” said Lina Khatib, director of Middle East and North Africa Programme at Chatham House.“The Khashoggi crisis is a big geo-political gamble for Turkey and so far it looks like it is playing the game masterfully. But Turkey alone will not be able to push for the removal of MBS. The ball lies in the American court,” she added. For Erdogan, promoting the Muslim Brotherhood — which Saudi Arabia has sought to marginalize in the Arab world and which was ousted from power and brutally repressed in Egypt in 2013 by current President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi — is at the heart of this power struggle. The Turkish leader could also try to extract concessions from Riyadh for its ally Qatar, facing a Saudi blockade backed by the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt since 2017.“I think that Erdogan sees this as an opportunity to push back against a triple entente in the Middle East that opposes his policies. That triple entente is composed of MBS, MBZ’s (Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan) UAE and Sissi’s Egypt,” said Soner Cagaptay, director of the Turkey Research Program at the Washington Institute.“These three countries, all Arabs, oppose Erdogan’s policies of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. Now Erdogan sees a golden opportunity because MBS is vulnerable.”But Sinan Ulgen, president of the Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy, said “it remains to be seen whether Ankara can continue to leverage this conjuncture and turn it into a permanent advantage raising Turkey’s regional influence to the detriment of Saudi Arabia”.Nicholas Heras, an analyst at the Center for a New American Security, said the Khashoggi case was the “latest chapter in Turkey and Saudi Arabia’s ongoing contest over which country is better” to lead the Muslim world.“Erdogan clearly seems to believe that he can use the Khashoggi crisis as a way to cut Prince Mohammad bin Salman, and by extension, Saudi Arabia, down to size,” Heras added.By not directly pointing the blame at the crown prince over Khashoggi, Erdogan is seeking to keep him under pressure, according to Karim Bitar of the Paris-based French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs think-tank.“Erdogan knows that he still has ammunition that could weaken MBS in the international arena so basically he is rolling the dice these days trying to figure out how to maximise his profit after this huge Saudi blunder,” he told AFP.While the Muslim Brotherhood is important to Turkey, the West — especially the United States — is wary of the group and wants to focus any pressure on the crown prince towards ending the Yemen war and lifting the blockade on Qatar, the experts said.“I expect the blockade on Doha will likely come to an end in the near future and the Saudis find a way to support the UN’s efforts in Yemen,” said Steven Cook of the Council on Foreign Relations.Bitar noted that the US administration relies on Prince Mohammed’s support for any possible peace plan for the Israel-Palestinian conflict as well as containing Iran, long a Saudi foe.Washington could also push the crown prince towards “a rapprochement with Israel and to maintain a hawkish line towards Iran”, Bitar added.

Emerging Gaza ceasefire to significantly ease blockade — report-Lebanese daily says Egypt prepared to slash 70% of its own border restrictions under 3-year truce deal; Israel will be required to grant work permits and expand fishing zone-By TOI staff-NOV 5,18

An emerging cease-fire agreement aimed at calming months of violence on the Israel-Gaza border will last for three years and see a significant easing of the blockade on the Hamas-controlled territory, Lebanon’s Al-Akbar newspaper reported Saturday.According to the report, the deal being brokered by Egypt stipulates a gradual stop to the ongoing, Hamas-orchestrated violent border protests and maritime flotillas over the next two months. In addition, Hamas will be obligated to punish Gazans caught engaging in violent demonstrating along the border with Israel. In return, Egypt will permanently open its Rafah border crossing and lift 70 percent of its blockade on the Hamas-controlled territory, the report said, citing officials familiar with the emerging agreement.Al-Akbar said the deal would require Israel to grant 5,000 work permits for Gazans, and expand the Strip’s fishing zone from nine to 14 nautical miles.Israel had no immediate comment on the report. In addition, the paper reported the Palestinian Authority would pay 80% of the salaries of Hamas officials in Gaza, and would not object to Qatar bankrolling those wages for at least six months, like it has in the past.Within the framework of the agreement, the report said various economic projects in Gaza would be advanced to create jobs for some 30,000 jobs and alleviate the humanitarian situation in the Strip. The truce is slated to last three years and will be under the supervision of the United Nations and Russia. At later stage after the deal is implemented, Al-Akbar said Egypt would work to advance a prisoner exchange deal between Israel and Hamas. The report was released after Friday’s weekly protests along the Gaza border saw a significant decrease in violence.According to the Hamas-run health ministry in the strip, 12 Palestinians were injured from live Israeli fire, and dozens injured from tear gas inhalation. The Associated Press said the figures were the lowest reported since the start of the demonstrations seven months ago.Official Fatah account posts a picture of what it says is a member of the Hamas-run security forces forcibly preventing protesters from approaching the border fence between Gaza and Israel https://t.co/XAgD08xXWL— Adam Rasgon (@adamrasgon1) November 2, 2018-A senior Hamas member said the clashes were scaled down to give diplomatic efforts a chance amid talk of a breakthrough in months of Egyptian-led negotiations. The official Twitter account of PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah faction even posted a picture of what it claimed to be a member of the Hamas-run security forces forcibly preventing protesters from approaching the Gaza border fence during Friday’s protests.Khalil al-Hayya said the terror group was “testing” Egyptian-led efforts to broker a ceasefire to ease an 11-year-old blockade on Gaza, but warned the clashes would resume if the blockade was not lifted. The IDF put turnout Friday at some 7,000 demonstrators with about half of those present approached the border fence, while the rest remained at a distance and did not clash with soldiers. The protest ended earlier than usual. For months, Egypt and UN officials have been engaged in indirect talks between Hamas, the Islamist terror group that runs the Gaza Strip, and Israel.Israel has accused Hamas, which is sworn to the destruction of the Jewish state, of leading the protests and using them as cover to carry out attacks against troops stationed the border.Last week, seven Palestinians were reported killed in the weekly border protests. The bloodshed was followed by rockets launched at Israel by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group, which were met with and retaliatory Israeli airstrikes, dashing hopes of what was expected to be a calmer week in Gaza.Since the often violent protests began on March 30, over 150 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire during demonstrations and clashes along the border, including a number of people who broke through the fence into Israel. Dozens of the fatalities were Hamas members. During that time, one Israeli soldier has been killed by a Palestinian sniper.

Palestinian-American woman detained at airport, to be deported-Immigration authorities say decision to deny Susan Abulhawa entry due to past incident at border crossing and not connected to BDS-By AFP-5 November 2018

A Palestinian-American writer has been detained on arrival at Israel’s main airport and will be deported, Palestinian and Israeli officials said Friday.Susan Abulhawa was refused entry at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport on Thursday evening, said a spokesman for the Palestinian Literature Festival, which Abulhawa had been set to attend. She appealed the decision in an Israeli court Friday morning but her appeal was rejected, meaning she was likely to be deported in the coming hours, the spokesman added.Abulhawa, author of the novel “Mornings in Jenin,” had been due to appear at panel events in both Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Ramallah during the festival, which is co-sponsored by the British Council.Immigration authority spokeswoman Sabine Haddad told AFP the writer was refused entry because of an incident in 2015 when she refused to answer questions by security personnel when attempting to enter though a land crossing from neighboring Jordan.“She was refused entry then and told that the next time she arrived she had to coordinate in advance,” Haddad said in Hebrew. This time “she landed without arranging entry in advance.”Haddad added that Abulhawa’s detention was not related to support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. In March 2017, Israel’s parliament passed a law barring entry to supporters of BDS, which seeks to isolate the Jewish state internationally.Last month an American student spent two weeks in Israeli detention appealing an entry ban over her past involvement in a campus group that supports boycotting Israel.Lara Alqasem was eventually allowed to enter Israel after its Supreme Court overturned a lower court ruling upholding the state’s decision to deny her entry.Alqasem’s detention came after a number of other high-profile cases in which travelers to Israel were questioned over their political views and alleged support for BDS, drawing scrutiny to the law barring boycott supporters.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Egyptian delegation tours Gaza clashes as promised calm largely holds-Hamas member says violence reined in to give Egyptian truce efforts a chance, but warns of escalation if blockade not lifted-By TOI staff and Agencies-5 November 2018

An Egyptian security delegation toured the Gaza border protests Friday, and even though thousands of Palestinians turned up, they were the quietest in several months, witnesses said. The visit came amid efforts by Egypt to broker a ceasefire between Israel and the Gaza Strip’s Hamas rulers. The delegation briefly attended the demonstrations in northern Gaza, a statement from the head of the organizing committee said. Eyewitnesses said a car carrying the delegation briefly drove to a protest site a few hundred meters from the border, before departing.A senior Hamas member said the clashes were scaled down to give diplomatic efforts a chance amid talk of a breakthrough in months of Egyptian-led negotiations.Khalil al-Hayya said the terror group is “testing” Egyptian-led efforts to broker a ceasefire to ease an 11-year-old blockade on Gaza.Fiercer clashes will resume if the blockade remains in place, al-Hayya warned.Israel and Egypt largely sealed their borders with Gaza after Hamas seized control in 2007 from the Palestinian Authority, citing a need to prevent weapons smuggling.Thousands again gathered at multiple sites near the frontier Friday but largely stayed away from the border fence, AFP correspondents said.Security forces loyal to Hamas prevented protesters from approaching the border too closely, the correspondents said. The Haaretz daily put turnout at some 7,000 demonstrators and quoted the Israel Defense Forces as saying about half of those present approached the border fence, while the rest remained at a distance and did not clash with soldiers. The protest ended earlier than usual. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said 32 Palestinians were injured during the protests, including seven by Israeli fire, which The Associated Press said was the lowest casualty figures reported since the start of the demonstrations.Armed factions in Gaza on Thursday had agreed to rein in violence along the security fence in light of the latest Egyptian-efforts to reach a ceasefire with Israel.A senior Hamas member told the Ynet news site groups in Gaza agreed to stop protesters from burning tires, throwing firebombs and approaching the border during rallies until Sunday. He said the protesters would also refrain from launching incendiary devices toward Israel over the weekend.Egypt and UN officials have been engaged in indirect talks between Hamas, the Islamist terror group that runs the Gaza Strip, and Israel.Israel has accused Hamas, which is sworn to the destruction of the Jewish state, of leading the protests and using them as cover to carry out attacks against troops stationed the border-Since often violent protests began on March 30, over 150 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire during protests and clashes along the border, including a number of people who broke through the fence into Israel. Dozens of the fatalities were Hamas members. One Israeli soldier has been killed by a Palestinian sniper. In a statement after a meeting of their leaders in Gaza on Thursday, Hamas and Islamic Jihad said the marches would continue, albeit without violence. Both groups praised Egyptian and UN efforts to broker a deal.A separate statement by Islamic Jihad carried by Israeli media threatened that it would use a “new tactic” along the border, without providing details.A leader of the Iran-backed terror group told Haaretz the Egyptians had agreed to work to curb any Israeli response to the protests over the next three weeks. The unnamed official said the protests could be called off after that period if Israel keeps to its commitment to ease a blockade on the Strip. There was no comment from Egyptian officials.Last week’s clashes, in which seven Palestinians were reported killed, was followed by Islamic Jihad rocket launches at Israel and retaliatory Israeli Air Force raids, dashing hopes of what was expected to be a calmer weekend along the border.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi met on Saturday in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm al-Sheikh, the official PA news agency Wafa reported. The last publicly known time the two leaders held a bilateral meeting was some ten months ago.“The two presidents discussed developments in the Middle East, especially those related to Palestine in light of the dangers the Palestinian issue is facing,” the Wafa report said.Abbas arrived in Egypt on Friday to meet Sissi and attend a conference in Sharm el-Sheikh.The PA president also praised Sissi “for the efforts the Arab Republic of Egypt has exerted” under his leadership, without elaborating.Azzam al-Ahmad, a Palestine Liberation Organization official who attended the meeting between the two leaders, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Egypt has recently made efforts to revive the reconciliation process between Hamas and Fatah, meeting with leaders from the two rival parties for separate talks in the past several weeks. In October 2017, Hamas and Fatah signed an Egyptian-brokered deal to advance reconciliation and bring the West Bank and Gaza under one government, but they failed to implement it.Hamas has controlled Gaza since ousting the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority from the territory in 2007.Egypt, alongside United Nations special coordinator for the Middle East peace process Nikolay Mladenov, has also recently played a key role in attempts to mediate a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.Arabic media reports have said that if achieved, a ceasefire would include at least a partial lifting of Israel’s restrictions on the movement of goods and people into and out of Gaza.Israel holds that its restrictions on movement serve security purposes including preventing the entry of weapons into the Strip.Ramallah-based Palestinian officials have said Fatah-Hamas reconciliation should precede any possible ceasefire. They have also contended that the Palestine Liberation Organization is the sole party with the legitimacy to negotiate a ceasefire with Israel.Egyptian intelligence officials joined Palestinians protesting in the border region between Israel and Gaza on Friday, Deputy Hamas Chief in Gaza Khalil al-Hayya told the London-based Al-Ghad TV.Friday’s rally was largely peaceful. Hayya said the protests were scaled down to give the ceasefire efforts a chance, according to the Associated Press. The protests, which have included many violent acts, have taken place weekly since March 30. Their organizers have said the protests aim to achieve the return of Palestinian refugees and their descendants to lands which are now part of Israel, and pressure the Jewish state to lift its restrictions on the movement of people and goods into and out of the coastal enclave.Hayya suggested efforts to achieve a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas had been making progress.“Their success is becoming visible in the horizon,” he told Al-Ghad TV, referring to the efforts to conclude a ceasefire. On Saturday, the Egyptian Intelligence officials left Gaza through the Erez crossing, according to the Hamas-linked Palestinian Information Center.

U.S. allows eight importers to keep buying Iran oil for now-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Arshad Mohammed, Lesley Wroughton and Patricia Zengerle-November 4, 2018

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States said on Friday it will temporarily allow eight importers to keep buying Iranian oil when it re-imposes sanctions on Monday to try to force Iran to curb its nuclear, missile and regional activities.U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who announced the decision, did not name the eight, which he referred to as "jurisdictions," a term that might include importers such as Taiwan which the United States does not regard as a country.Having abandoned the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, U.S. President Donald Trump is trying to cripple Iran’s oil-dependent economy and force Tehran to quash not only its nuclear ambitions and its ballistic missile program but its support for militant proxies in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and other parts of the Middle East.On Twitter, in a message designed to emphasize his "maximum pressure" policy toward Iran, Trump included a photograph of himself modeled on a entertainment industry poster with the headline: "Sanctions are coming November 5."China, India, South Korea, Turkey, Italy, the United Arab Emirates and Japan have been top importers of Iran’s oil, while Taiwan occasionally buys cargoes of Iranian crude but is not a major buyer.Turkey has been told it will temporarily be allowed to keep buying Iranian oil, its energy minister told reporters, as has Iraq, as long as it does not pay Iran in U.S. dollars, three Iraqi officials said.India and South Korea were also on the list, said a source familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. Under U.S. law, exceptions can be granted for up to 180 days.Oil prices fell on Friday for a weekly loss of over 6 percent, as investors worried about crude oversupply after the U.S. waivers.Brent crude futures fell 6 cents to settle at $72.83 a barrel, while U.S. crude declined 55 cents to end the session at $63.14 per barrel, a 0.86 percent loss.U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin also said Washington had told the Brussels-based SWIFT financial messaging service it was expected to disconnect all Iranian financial institutions that the United States plans to blacklist as of Monday. He declined to name the targeted institutions.Trump set in motion the resumption of sanctions on May 8, when he announced U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 deal between Iran and world powers under which Tehran had agreed to curtail its nuclear program in return for relief from sanctions."This part of the campaign is aimed at depriving the regime of the revenues it uses to spread death and destruction around the world, Pompeo said.ZERO CRUDE-Pompeo said Washington will issue temporary waivers to the eight Iran oil importers "only because they have demonstrated significant reductions in their crude oil and cooperation on many other fronts."Two would stop imports and the other six would greatly reduce them, Pompeo said.He later said the ultimate goal was to stop all Iranian crude exports."We will ultimately move Iran to zero crude oil. That’ll take us some number of months to do that," Pompeo told Fox News according to the transcript of the interview released by the State Department. "We’ve been able to do that in a way that hasn’t had a huge impact on crude oil prices. That’s a good thing for American consumers."Iran said it was not troubled over the re-imposition of U.S. sanctions, which target not only its vital oil and gas sector but also shipping, ship-building and banking industries."America will not be able to carry out any measure against our great and brave nation ... We have the knowledge and the capability to manage the country's economic affairs," Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi told state TV.However, ordinary Iranians fear an even more painful squeeze, from businesses struggling to buy raw materials to the sick and elderly unable to afford life-saving medicines."I cannot even buy rice to feed my children or pay my rent," said elementary school teacher Pejman Sarafnejad, 43, a father of three in Tehran. The European Union, France, Germany and Britain, parties to the nuclear agreement who are trying to keep it alive, said they regretted Washington's decision to re-impose sanctions. The EU is creating a special mechanism that would circumvent U.S. financial sanctions on Iran. The United States is able to pressure other nations to stop buying Iranian oil under a 2012 law that allows the president to cut off foreign banks, including central banks, from the U.S. financial system unless they significantly reduce purchases. The United States believes global oil supplies will exceed demand next year, making it easier for countries to cut Iranian oil imports to zero, Brian Hook, the U.S. special representative for Iran, told reporters.(Reporting by Arshad Mohammed, Patricia Zengerle, Lesley Wroughton; Additional reporting by Timothy Gardner and Humeyra Pamak in Washington, Devika Krishna Kumar in New York; Henning Gloystein in Singapore, Aizhu Chen in Beijing, Dmitry Zhdannikov in London; Hyonhee Shin in Seoul, Osamu Tsukimori in Tokyo, Gulsen Solaker in Ankara and Parisa Hafezi in Dubai; Editing by Susan Thomas, Grant McCool and Tomasz Janowski)

Fearing 'angry mob', lawyer of freed Christian woman leaves Pakistan-[Reuters]-By Saad Sayeed and Asif Shahzad-YAHOONEWS-November 4, 2018

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The Pakistani lawyer who helped a Christian woman overturn her death sentence for blasphemy said on Saturday he had left the country in fear of his life after her acquittal earlier this week sparked street protests by Islamists.Leaders of the ultra-Islamist Tehreek-e-Labaik (TLP) group blocked main roads in Pakistan's biggest cites for three days, calling for the murder of the Supreme Court judges who acquitted Asia Bibi on Wednesday -- urging their cooks and servants to kill them.Saiful Mulook had kept a low profile during the years he represented Bibi, a mother-of-five who has been on death row since 2010, due to the highly sensitive nature of the case. Two politicians who had tried to help her have been assassinated.Mulook told Reuters in a WhatsApp message he had gone abroad "just to save (my) life from angry mob" and because of fears for the safety of his family."I consulted and everybody is of this opinion (that I should leave)," he said, adding that he would return to the country to continue his work on the case if he was given protection by security forces. The TLP called off the protests late on Friday after striking a deal with the government that would see authorities seek to put Bibi on an 'exit control list' barring her from leaving the country.Bibi's whereabouts are unknown, but Islamists have warned the authorities against taking her out of the country."There will be a war if they send Asia out of country," TLP leader Khadim Hussain Rizvi said after the deal was reached.Earlier in the week one of Rizvi's deputies called for Pakistan's Chief Justice Saqib Nisar and two other judges who ruled in the case to be murdered."Whoever, who has got any access to them, kill them before the evening," TLP co-founder Muhammad Afzal Qadri told supporters. The TLP was founded out of a movement supporting a bodyguard who assassinated Punjab provincial governor Salman Taseer after he spoke in Bibi's defence in 2011. Federal minister for minorities Shahbaz Bhatti was also killed after calling for her release.Bibi was convicted of blasphemy in 2010 for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Islam after neighbours objected to her drinking water from their glass because she was not Muslim. She always denied having committed blasphemy. The case has outraged Christians worldwide and been a source of division within Pakistan, where Islamist parties such as the TLP have framed Bibi's release as Pakistan's government caving into Western demands.Bibi's acquittal is being reviewed, though it is extremely rare for a review to overturn a Supreme Court ruling.(Writing by Drazen Jorgic; Editing by Helen Popper)

UAE minister says Iran’s aggression to blame for renewed US sanctions-Anwar Gargash cites Tehran’s ‘aggressive policies’ as largely responsible for reintroduction of punitive measures that were lifted under 2015 nuclear deal-By TOI staff-TOI-NOV 4,18

The United Arab Emirates’ Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash said Saturday that Iran’s “aggressive policies” were “largely responsible” for the US decision to reimpose sanctions against the Islamic Republic, according to Reuters. The UAE along with Saudi Arabia have adopted a more confrontational approach to Shiite rival Iran in recent years, accusing it of supporting terror groups and fueling turmoil in regional countries. The two Sunni states head a military coalition in Yemen aimed at toppling the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group and returning the internationally recognized government to power. On Friday, the US announced that it will reintroduce sanctions against Tehran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal. They are the second batch the administration has reimposed since it withdrew from the international accord in May.The rollback, which will go into effect on Monday, ends US participation in the nuclear deal, which now hangs in the balance as Iran no longer enjoys any relief from sanctions imposed by the world’s largest economy.Shortly after the announcement, US President Donald Trump tweeted a poster-like image of himself in a play on TV show Game of Thrones, with the phrase “Sanctions are Coming, November 5.”pic.twitter.com/nk2vKvHuaL— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 2, 2018-With limited exceptions, the sanctions will hit countries that do not stop importing Iranian oil and foreign firms that do business with blacklisted Iranian entities, including its central bank, a number of private financial institutions, and state-run port and shipping firms, as well as hundreds of individual Iranian officials. The waivers will be valid for six months, during which time the importing country can buy Iranian oil but must deposit Iran’s revenue in an escrow account. Iran can spend the money but only on a narrow range of humanitarian items. Pompeo said two of the eight countries would wind down imports to zero within weeks.

Florida imam: Palestine must be liberated, even at cost of millions of martyrs-Hasan Sabri says ‘Palestine in its entirety is Islamic land, and there is no difference between what was occupied in 1948 and 1967’-By TOI staff-NOV 4,18

During a recent sermon at the Islamic Center of South Florida, an imam called for the “liberation” of Palestine, even at the cost of tens of millions of Muslim lives.“If a land is occupied or plundered, it should be liberated from the occupiers and plunderers, even if this leads to the martyrdom of tens of millions of Muslims,” said Hasan Sabri in a sermon last month translated Friday by the Middle East Media Research Institute.“This is the ruling, and there is no room for discussion or concessions.”Sabri referred to “Palestine in its entirety” as “Islamic land” and asserted that there is no difference between the land captured by Israel in the 1948 Independence War and the 1967 Six Day War. “All of it is Islamic waqf land that was occupied by force. The responsibility for it lies with the entire Islamic nation, and the [Palestinians] should benefit from this land.”Florida Friday Sermon – Imam Hasan Sabri: Palestine In Its Entirety Should Be Liberated, Even If This Leads to the Martyrdom of Tens of Millions of Muslims pic.twitter.com/tbuJNiOSry— MEMRI (@MEMRIReports) November 2, 2018-The Imam also criticized the yet-to-be-released peace plan of US President Donald Trump. “They call it ‘the Deal of the Century.’ Why do they call it a deal?’ Because whoever is involved in this treason is not a man of principles,” Sabri said.“These are peddlers, not men with a cause. All they want are positions and jobs. That is why for them, the cause is nothing but a deal, a matter of give and take. For them, it is nothing but a deal.”

Christians in Egypt bury their dead after jihadist attack-Local Islamic State affiliate claims its gunmen killed 7 Coptic pilgrims in ambush attack near Cairo-By Samy Magdy and Hamza Hendawi-TOI-NOV 4,18

MINYA, Egypt (AP) — Hundreds of Egyptian Coptic Christians gathered Saturday for a funeral service south of Cairo to bid farewell to six of seven people killed the previous day when militants ambushed three buses carrying pilgrims on their way to a remote desert monastery. The service at Prince Tadros church in the city of Minya was held amid tight security and presided over by Minya’s top cleric, Anba Makarios. He and members of the congregation prayed and chanted over a row of six white coffins.Relatives of the victims cried and held each other for support. All but one of those killed were members of the same family, according to a list of the victims’ names released by the church, which said a boy and a girl, ages 15 and 12 respectively, were among the dead. A total of 19 were wounded in the attack, according to the Coptic Orthodox Church. The local Islamic State group affiliate, which spearheads militants fighting security forces in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, claimed responsibility for the attack south of Cairo. It said the attack was revenge for the imprisonment by Egyptian authorities of “our chaste sisters” but did not elaborate. The IS affiliate claimed that 13 Christians were killed and another 18 wounded, but it was not immediately possible to independently verify the claim or reconcile the discrepancy in the number of dead and wounded given by the group and the church. The attack was likely to cast a dark shadow on one of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s showpieces — the World Youth Forum — which opens Saturday in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. The forum is drawing thousands of local and foreign youth to discuss a wide range of topics, with Egypt’s 63-year-old leader taking center stage. The Islamic State has repeatedly vowed to go after Egypt’s Christians as punishment for their support of el-Sissi. As defense minister, el-Sissi led the military’s 2013 ouster of an Islamist president, whose one-year rule proved divisive. The group has claimed responsibility for a string of deadly attacks on Christians dating back to December 2016.El-Sissi, who has made security among his top priorities since taking office in 2014, wrote on his Twitter account that Friday’s attack was designed to harm the “nation’s solid fabric” and pledged to continue fighting terrorism. He later offered his condolences when he spoke by telephone with Pope Tawadros II, spiritual leader of Egypt’s Orthodox Christians and a close el-Sissi ally.In a somber message of his own, Tawadros said in a video clip released by the church that the latest attack would only make the Christians stronger.“I think that this is a terrorist act which is targeting Egypt through playing the card of the Copts,” said Begemy Nassem Nasr, priest of the church of St. Mary in Minya. “We know that … President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi is hosting the youth forum and they meant to embarrass him.”Embarrassingly, Friday’s attack is the second to target pilgrims heading to the St. Samuel the Confessor monastery in as many years, indicating that security measures put in place since then are either inadequate or have become lax. The previous attack in May 2017 left nearly 30 people dead.It was the latest in a string of IS assaults against Christians. Previous ones targeted churches packed with worshippers in Cairo, the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and Tanta in the Nile Delta north of the capital, leaving at least 100 people dead. The attacks led to tighter security around Christian places of worship and Church-linked facilities, where metal detectors and armed police are routinely deployed. They have also underlined the vulnerability of minority Christians in a country where many Muslims have since the 1970s grown religiously conservative and less tolerant of non-Muslims.The Interior Ministry, which oversees the police, said Friday’s attackers used secondary dirt roads to reach the buses carrying the pilgrims, who were near the monastery at the time of the attack. Only pilgrims have been allowed on the main road leading to the monastery since last year’s attack. Some Christians in Minya said police negligence was partly to blame for the latest attack, arguing that they stopped providing armed escorts for pilgrims’ buses headed to the old monastery.“They should have escorted them. They know it is dangerous to leave them alone on that road,” said Youssef Attya, a 38-year-old health worker from Minya. The Interior Ministry said police were pursuing the attackers, who fled the scene.Egypt’s Christians, who account for some 10 percent of the country’s 100 million people, complain of discrimination in the Muslim majority country. Christian activists say the church’s alliance with el-Sissi has offered the ancient community a measure of protection but failed to end frequent acts of discrimination that boil over into violence against Christians, especially in rural Egypt. In Minya, the scene of Friday’s attack, Christians constitute the highest percentage of the population — about 35 percent — of any Egyptian province. It’s also in Minya where most acts of violence, like attacks on churches and Christian homes and businesses, take place.Christians there accuse the local police of being soft on Muslims who attack them and complain that, in their pursuit of keeping the peace between the two communities, they insist on resolving sectarian disputes through tribal-like reconciliation meetings rather than rule of law.

Clocks 'fall back' on Sunday, offering 1 more hour of sleep-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-November 3, 2018

Twice a year, most Canadians change the time of their clocks by an hour.We "fall back," as we'll do this Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2 a.m. And a few months later, on March 10, 2019, we'll "spring forward."We know that the time shift helps us make the most of light in the morning and evening, and that it can temporarily upset our sleep schedules. But why do we do it? The idea was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in the 1770s, but wasn't implemented until around 1915. Germany was the first country to use it, then Britain. It was adopted more widely during the First World War, which is when Canada started using daylight time.Reducing energy consumption and making the best use of daylight hours were the main reasons daylight time was used. There have been changes to the dates when clocks would change over the years, most recently in 2007, when legislation in the United States moved the start of daylight time three weeks earlier in the spring and the return to standard time a week later in the fall. The change was aimed at trying to help save energy. Canada followed the move in the U.S. so the time zones would remain aligned. That means clocks now:Fall back the first Sunday in November.Spring forward the second Sunday in March.Only in some parts of Canada-Most of Saskatchewan has not observed daylight time since 1966, staying on central standard time all year round. Some border towns follow the time schemes of their neighbours in Manitoba or Alberta.Areas of Quebec east of 63 degrees west longitude do not change to daylight time and remain on Atlantic time year round. Pockets of Ontario and British Columbia do not use daylight time.Daylight time is observed in most of the United States. Just two states — Arizona and Hawaii — and three territories — American Samoa, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands — do not participate. There have been debates about whether daylight time remains useful. A March 2013 telephone survey of 1,000 adults by Rasmussen Reports in the U.S., for example, suggested 45 per cent of people thought it had no value, and 19 per cent were unsure.A similar survey of Europeans in the summer of 2018 found 84 per cent want to stop changing their clocks twice a year. That prompted the European Commission to announce in August that it would recommend that European Union member states abolish daylight savings. The time change can also affect sleep cycles. "Falling back," is generally thought to be less physically stressful, because people can get an extra hour of sleep, but studies show that's not always the case.Time changes are not always beneficial to traffic and pedestrians. A study by U.S. researchers found there were more pedestrian deaths during the evening rush hour in November than October as drivers and pedestrians adjusted to the earlier darkness.Upcoming time changes (ET)-2019: Spring forward Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. Fall back Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 a.m.2020: Spring forward Sunday, March 8 at 2 a.m. Fall back Sunday Nov. 1 at 2 a.m.2021: Spring forward Sunday, March 14 at 2 a.m. Fall back Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2 a.m.

Federal ministers defend cannabis rollout after Enquête uncovers ties to organized crime-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-November 4, 2018

Federal ministers defended the rollout of legal cannabis Friday after a Radio-Canada investigation revealed that the financial backers of some producers have links to organized crime. The French-language investigative program Enquête found that two individuals connected to illegal drug trafficking, including one with links to the Rizzuto crime family, were able to invest in a major legal cannabis producer.Another individual with ties to the illegal market was able to sell his cannabis business to one of Canada's biggest legal players in exchange for shares in the company."It's not something that happens overnight, but there are laws in place to ensure that we do everything we can to capture individuals that are involved in organized crime," said Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould.RCMP Supt. Yves Goupil told Enquête that while the police force conducts background checks on those applying to be licensed producers, uncovering everyone who is investing in the venture is a much more costly process. He said the RCMP cannot afford to employ deep surveillance techniques on every producer.Opposition parties said it's a troubling sign that, two weeks into the era of legal cannabis, the black market appears to have infiltrated Canada's legal supply chain."On its face, problems begin to emerge," said Conservative Member of Parliament Gérard Deltell.NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice said it's essential that the government uncover who is financing Canada's legal cannabis producers."They take the patch off their back and put on their jacket and tie and become a legitimate businessmen and continue to profit off drugs," he said.Making the verification process more difficult is the use of trusts, the Enquête report found, which hide the names of beneficiaries from the public."We have robust physical and personnel security screening processes in place for the existing industry designed to guard against infiltration by organized crime," said Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction Minister Bill Blair. He pointed to the fact that all officers and board members of a licensed producer are subject to background checks.Blair said the government has also proposed expanding those checks to board members of any company that controls the corporation doing the actual cannabis production.Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor defended the government's cannabis law, calling the current verification system "exhaustive."She reiterated that Health Canada had found no connections to organized crime in the companies approved to produce cannabis."It's a new regime. We will ensure that the right resources are in place," she said.At a news conference in Churchill, Man., Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged there is still work to do be done the cannabis file, but that he is happy with the rollout so far. With files from Radio-Canada.

Christine Douglass-Williams, Jihad Watch: Saudi Arabia the worst country for atheists, followed by nine other Muslim countries      Cache   Translate Page

Saudi Arabia the worst country for atheists, followed by nine other Muslim countries

The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) released “its seventh annual Freedom of Thought Report at the U.N. General Assembly in New York City.” It listed the 10 best and the 10 worst countries for atheists.
The US ranked among the best, while Muslim countries, and particularly Sharia states, were the worst. No surprise there.
Belgium, the Netherlands, and Taiwan shared the No. 1 spot in the Top 10 best countries for nonreligious people list, followed by France, Japan, Nauru, São Tomé and Príncipe, Norway, the United States, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. Saudi Arabia was identified as the worst country for atheists, followed by Iran, Afghanistan, Maldives, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Mauritania, Malaysia, Sudan, and Brunei.
The IHEU report was in effect, a test of the tolerance of the citizens of various countries worldwide. Let’s keep in mind, meanwhile, that fascists deem freedom of thought and freedom of speech to be threatening to their rule. As we hear tale-bearers in Western societies incessantly tout “diversity,” “multiculturalism,” “tolerance,” and wide-open immigration policies, one wonders if they themselves actually believe what they are saying, since they routinely embrace the worst elements of humanity — those who in fact flatly reject “diversity” and are defiantly intolerant. As a result, Western societies are in grave danger of losing their status as havens of tolerance, pluralism, and freedom, thanks to globalists who think that migrants from the most intolerant nations will magically integrate, give up their faith in the Sharia, and accept Judeo-Christian values as their new norm.
What was the purpose of the study? And what will Western policymakers and so-called human rights activists actually do about it, if anything? The results of this study will likely lead to nowhere. The willfully blind will continue to promote their fanciful utopian worldview and blame truth-tellers for trying to wake people up.
“Top 10 Best, Worst Countries for Atheists Ranked: USA Among Best, Islamic Regimes the Worst,” by Stoyan Zaimov, Christian Post, October 30, 2018:
A secular watchdog group has ranked the best and worst countries for atheists and non-religious people, finding the United States to be among the best, with Islamic regimes making up the worst.
The International Humanist and Ethical Union released on Monday its seventh annual Freedom of Thought Report at the U.N. General Assembly in New York City, which for the first time included national rankings.
“This is a world’s first. For the first time our report will show, with authority and accuracy, the discrimination faced by people around the world because of their nonreligious beliefs. This report paints a dark picture, with significant discrimination faced by our nonreligious friends and colleagues around the world,” said Andrew Copson, president of the IHEU.
“At a time of growing nationalism, we continue to see those who are brave enough to criticize and critique conservative religious leaders demonized as ‘unpatriotic’ and ‘subversive,'” he added.
The rankings included considerations such as the approach to religious freedom by governments, as well as educational, societal, and freedom of expression issues.
“In the worst spot, Saudi Arabia comes into particular criticism for a 2014 law defining the ‘promotion of atheist thought in any form’ as terrorism, and for the prosecution of liberal activists and campaigners generally, including a death sentence handed down in 2017 for an alleged ‘apostate,’ Ahmad Al-Shamri, on the accusation of atheism,” IHEU noted….

Before it’s too late for Western Europe and the United States, which gave birth to the traditions of freedom and equality of rights for all that shine today as lights in the entire world, this must be stopped. Therefore Jihad Watch seeks to bring public attention to:
  • The plight of the dhimmis, an immense but almost completely ignored ongoing scandal that continues in Muslim countries today;
  • The plight of women under Sharia provisions, similar to conditions imposed on dhimmis, in the denial of equal rights and dignity;
  • Slavery in Islamic lands, which continues today, justified by Sharia-‘s dhimmi codes;
  • The integral role of jihad and dhimmitude ideology in global terrorism today;
  • The license that academic and journalistic whitewashes of dhimmitude gives to radical jihadist enemies of human rights for all.
Jihad Watch fights to ensure that deeds done in the darkness for so long will not continue to be done. The light of world attention is anathema to the proponents of jihad and dhimmitude: we have seen in recent years that women sentenced to stoning for adultery, often victims of rape unjustly accused thanks to Sharia laws disallowing rape victims’ testimony, were freed following international outcry. Jihad Watch seeks to provoke similar, continuous and increasing outcry wherever and whenever the Sharia’s institutionalized injustices threaten dhimmis and women.

May the truth prevail.

Robots grow: first police-bot in Dubai      Cache   Translate Page
https://www.aneddoticamagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/Day_239_-_West_Midlands_Police_-_Historic_Image_Police_Pillar_c.1950.jpg

In Dubai is happening what we could call a “technological revolution”.

Airport authorities of the Emirate of Dubai announced the creation of the first police-bot. The debut has happened during the fourth Gulf Information and Security Expo and Conference (GISEC), near the Burj Khalifa. REEM, this the name of the prototype presented, is 170centimetres tall and weighs 100 Kg, has an emotion sensor inside, can recognise gestures and hand movements in a 1.5 metres range. According to what said PAL Robotics, the company settled in Barcelona which have built it with the aid of the police of Dubai, it will be possible to control the machine from the distance or to leave it working on its own: the battery allows it to work eight hours. Even robots, like their human colleagues (but it will be needed only to change their battery in order to charge them to 100%), will have shifts. “The United Arab Emirates and Dubai are preparing to organize some events, like EXPO in 2020, which forces us to recruit and train a great number of policemen” said the general director of the police force of Dubai, the general Khalid al-Razzouqi. But it is possible to appear in Dubai streets now. In a first moment, it will be used by tourists and citizens to ask for information ( it speaks six tongues) and to signal and pay fines.

REEM won’t be used to stalk potential criminals or so, thought: in fact despite having a device for the facial recognition projected by IBM, it will only tell his human colleagues if he finds someone suspicious or problems. T will be able to read machine plates from the distance and look after unguarded objects in highly populated zones. I twill also able to record vocal witnesses from people with whom he will be able to interact through a touch screen that will allow them to talk directly with the central station. Another application ( the term isn’t random because they seem to have a processor similar to that installed in the new smart phones) seems to be that he will signal fires thanks to the installation of a smoke sensor.

“Our objective consists in replacing 25% of the policemen with robots by 2030”, said Khalid al-Razzouqi. It will be introduced in human squads to help fighting the crime. By 2030, according to the Police Services Administration Intelligence director, it will be possible to have a police station completely managed by Cyber-policemen.

In Dubai, always talking about robotics, during the World Government Summit has been presented the first AAV (Autonomous aerial vehicle), a flying taxi drone born from the collaboration between the Route and Trabsport Authority (RRTA) and the Chinese company Ehang. The first tests of Ehang184 seem to have given positive results. “The actual vehicle consists in a version we have already experimented, RTA is putting all his efforts in order to launch it as soon as possible”, said Mattar al Tayer, general director and president of RTA. The vehicle has been provided of a touch screen with the map of all possible destinations. It has a number of default paths: the passenger must only select the destination and the vehicle will do everything automatically, will take off, will set the default flying speed and finally will land in the chosen point.

The vehicle is 3,9 metres long, 4 metres wide and 1,6 metres tall, it weights 250 kg empty and it can carry a passenger (just one) for one hour. The top cruise height is 3000 feet and the recharging time requires one to two hours. Up to now autonomy is still short: the taxi drone can fly for a max of 30 minutes at a top cruise speed of 160 km/hours, with a standard speed in Dubai of 100 km per hour. The ascending/ descending speed is about 6 metres/s.

All in a completely automatic way, even if in the first part of the project everything will be monitored from a centre on the ground to control every operation. The goal is to transform the 25% of the individual trips in automatic drones trips by 2030, according to Al Tayer. Always taking care of safety of passengers: “We have faced and tried the highest levels of security for the development and production of the Ehang184. The vehicle has eight main propellers, so that if one breaks down, there are still seven ready to complete the flight and make a nice landing. In case of eventual malfunction in one of these systems, the control unit will be able to control and orientate safely the drone to the chosen landing point”, said Al Tayer.

Safety is a discussion point every time we talk about robots: Steve Wright, the aeronautic professor at the West of England University, has called himself sceptical about the possibilities of success of the drone presented in Dubai. “The main point is succeeding in creating systems able to resist to possible faults, I would like to see the drone flying for at least a thousand hours before seeing a person in it.”

Another opinion comes from the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority which has participated to the tests which define the standards of safety required for authorizations and inspections of the vehicle. “The drone is projected for working with almost every atmospheric. The vehicle has high-precision sensors with a low chance of error and can resist to extreme vibrations and temperatures”, concluded Al Taver.

But this isn’t all: in order for it to work, this vehicle should be controlled from a control station through a 4G connection and some structures that haven’ t already been seen should be built. The real risk is that this will become more a tourist attraction than an answer to a real problem.

The sample run of the first drone is being done according to the desire of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arabian Emirates and governor of Dubai, of transforming Dubai in the smartest and most technological city in the world. A complete revolution.

Meanwhile, in Europe, the company Airbus Group has also thought about a flying taxi with the autopilot: Vahana, this is the name of the vehicle, should be ready by 2020, and in order to prevent the problems shown by Wright, the technicians of the Airbus have installed in the vehicle a ballistic parachute . Thinking about a airplane-taxi whose design is in the hands of an ex-engineer from the NASA.

Also, in Dubai, there’s already someone who talks about a hyper-fast train, Hyperloop One, which will consist in capsules moving at an extreme speed in a low-pressure tubes. Starting from Dubai, the new train should reach Abu Dhabi in a mere 12 minutes, Riyadh in 48 and Doha in 23. Everything travelling at almost 800 km/hours!

In Sicily, in the meanwhile, it’s being decided what to do to rebuild broken streets and repair interrupted and disconnected streets and what to do for the railway on which run, almost for a half, only trains with oil, because it’s not even electrified…

America Election night party

Here is what you need to know.

The Democrats take the House, and the Republicans hold the Senate. As of 4:50 a.m. ET on Wednesday, the Democrats held 219 House seats (218 needed for a majority), and the Republicans held 51 Senate seats (50 needed for a majority counting a tiebreaker from the vice president) with several seats in both chambers still up for grabs, according to the Associated Press.

Nancy Pelosi signals Democrats won't move to impeach Trump. "I get criticized in my own party for not being in support of it," the House minority leader told PBS' Judy Woodruff. "But I'm not. If that happens, it would have to be bipartisan, and the evidence would have to be so conclusive."

Stocks are rallying. The S&P 500 is on track to open higher by about 1% after a mixed overnight session saw China's Shanghai Composite (-0.68%) slide and Britain's FTSE (+1.22%) gain.

Oil is surging after report says major exporters are considering output cuts for 2109. West Texas Intermediate crude oil, the US benchmark, was up $1, or 1.62%, at $62.77 a barrel after Bloomberg reported delegates would consider boosting production for 2019 at a meeting in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, this weekend. WTI touched its lowest level in seven months on Tuesday.

Hank Paulson warns of an 'economic iron curtain' if the US and China can't find a way to get along. The former Treasury secretary told the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore that the US risked triggering a "full-blown" cold war and isolating itself from the region if it could not mend its differences with China.

One expert says Elon Musk and other short-selling opponents have the situation all wrong. "Just because someone borrowed the stock doesn't mean it finds its way into the marketplace as a transacted short sale," Bob Sloan, the managing partner at the financial technology and analytics firm S3 Partners, told Business Insider. "Those two things are very different from one another. And yet, because of how data has been contributed to the marketplace, those two things — the borrow and the executed short sale — have become conflated as the same thing. And they're not."

AMD spikes after Amazon makes a big bet on its new processors. Shares gained as much as 8.8% Tuesday, and finished up 3.92%, after Amazon said it would use AMD's new processors to give some customers lower prices for cloud services.

I believe they track different indexes and track different countries.
Don't "believe," teach yourself how to check. In a moment I'll do it myself and time how long it takes to get the answer.

First, supposing they do, it's pretty hard to see what difference it's made.

Blue: Fidelity Emerging Markets Index, FPMAX.

Orange: Vanguard Emerging Markets Index, VEIEX.

Green, for comparison, is a Fidelity developed markets index fund, FSIIX.

Presumably you want emerging markets because they have behaved differently from developed markets. It seems to me that the two emerging markets index funds have both been very different from developed markets... and almost identical to each other. To me, the difference would matter at all. If there are index provider and country list differences, they're technicalities. Either fund has done its job adequately.

OK, now let's research. The time is 9:09 am.

By the way, I just did a Google search: the MSCI Emerging Markets Index began including China A shares (whatever they are) just this year, June 2018.

Conclusion: Yes, they track different indexes with different country lists. What is an "emerging market" is a matter of opinion and there are at least six different authoritative opinions. I'm not really sure to evaluate the lists, but the biggest obvious difference is that MSCI thinks Korea is still an emerging market.

Art Review: 'I AM: Contemporary Middle Eastern Women Artists and the Quest to Build Peace,' Cathedral of St. Paul      Cache   Translate Page
It's not often Vermonters get to view artwork by major contemporary women artists of the Middle East. A traveling exhibition of single works by 31 such artists, now on view at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Burlington, is an extraordinary opportunity to do just that. "I AM: Contemporary Middle Eastern Women Artists and the Quest to Build Peace" includes works by Arab and Persian artists who are Muslim or Christian. Seven are from Bahrain; the rest are from Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Iran, Palestine, Yemen, Morocco, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Iraq or Saudi Arabia. The range of mediums represented is gratifyingly diverse, from oil and acrylic paintings to photography, collage, ink on paper, digital prints, scanography, mixed media, sculpture and, in one case, human hair affixed to calf vellum. Some of the artists are based or were trained in the UK, the U.S. or Europe. High-end auction companies Christie's and Sotheby's represent a few of them, and nearly all have been exhibited and collected internationally. All the works are for sale, and these artists' integration in the global art market accounts for why the show would seem at home in any contemporary gallery in any major U.S. city. So, how did it end up on the concrete walls of St. Paul's, an Episcopal church? "I AM" is a peace-building project of Caravan, a nonprofit founded in Egypt in 2009 by Paul-Gordon Chandler, an American Episcopal priest. The son of a minister, he grew up in Senegal "surrounded by other faiths and art," Chandler said during a phone call, and was educated in Côte d'Ivoire and England. He launched Caravan during a 10-year posting in Cairo; its mission is to use the arts to unite people of different backgrounds and faiths in an effort to build sustainable peace. Caravan's art exhibition began as a citywide East-West arts festival in Cairo that continued annually until 2013, when president Mohamed Morsi was overthrown. That year's exhibition traveled to London while Caravan itself moved, with Chandler, to Chicago. Every Caravan exhibition since has also toured the U.S. St. Paul's former dean and rector, the Very Reverend Jeanne Finan, who retired in October, had been following Chandler's work. She emailed him when she spotted an online call for venues for "I AM." Thus Burlington became the last — and smallest — stop on the tour of an exhibition that opened at the Jordan…

Sharjah, the third largest emirate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has shed the spotlight, once again, on the role of the youth in establishing long-term peace in the MENA region. The emirate has hosted key discussions with more than 600 senior officials and 60 key speakers from around the world, who have strongly asserted that this will be possible only when the region’s governments are more participatory, and make the youth equal partners in the decision-making process.           Book explores mobile media disruption in Middle East      Cache   Translate Page

How mobile media are changing the communication landscape in the Middle East is explored in a new book published under a research grant at Northwestern University in Qatar. The book, Mobile Disruptions in the Middle East, co-authored by John V. Pavlik, Everette E. Dennis, Rachel Davis Mersey and Justin Gengler and published by Routledge, offers lessons from the Arabian Gulf, notably Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, and draws on data collected as part of a $726,000 award from the Qatar National Research Fund. Pavlik, a professor of journalism at Rutgers was formerly associate dean for research at NU-Q where Dennis is dean and CEO. Mersey is an associate professor at NU’s Medill School while Gengler is assistant research professor at the Social and Economic Survey Research Center at Qatar University.

As lead author Pavlik states, “The Gulf states are the perfect setting for a study that tests the impact of modern media disruption as the region rapidly adopts mobile media from laptops and smartphones to wearable devices.” Qatar and the UAE have the highest internet penetration in the world with 99 percent of the population covered, according to the 2018 Global Digital report. Mobility, the NU-Q based study notes, “has long been an important aspect of life in the Middle East… [and] has a strong and deep sociological foundation in Qatar and Arabian Gulf with the movement of Bedouin tribes and their traditions shaping the lifestyle and values of the Gulf.” This cultural and historical context for mobile communication, even before the digital age, set the stage for rapid development as these wealthy nations were able to engage with the internet and mobile devices early on, the book suggests. In addition to the Al Jazeera Networks and BeIn Sports, both based in Qatar, the UAE has a notable media city with scores of media companies and other digital enterprises.

Dennis notes that the study “benefits from the collaboration of scholars from four institutions and is aimed at analyzing the advanced media scene of the Gulf States with lessons for the global community. It has the advantage of connecting with the world-wide concern about media disruption in one of the most dynamic digital battlegrounds anywhere,” he said. Commentators in the Middle East have long hoped that advanced communication in the region would lead to a more accurate and nuanced image of the Arab world than is presently seen in Western media and the book aims to break down communication flawed by inaccuracies and misunderstandings that distort the image of the region and its peoples. As the book was a being written a four-nation blockade of Qatar set off an information war between the two states under study in the volume (UAE and Qatar) among others that challenges accurate and reliable information amid fake news and other deliberate distortions. Data for the book was collected before the blockade occurred in June 2017, though interviews with key sources continued after that.

The book looks at audience engagement with mobile media including internet use and such specific content as news—and how media organizations adapt and respond to mobile media while tracking trends in the development of innovative content aimed at attracting and serving individuals and audiences. Set in the context of the convergence of modern, digital media, the authors address the role of disruption innovation and transformation changes based on results from the large-scale study of mobile media disruption conducted over three years by the authors. One goal is “to advance understanding of consumer preferences for different types of content” ranging from news to entertainment, sports, music and games, among others. Mobile Media Disruptions in the Middle East is the first of several reports, this one involving a quantitative survey of consumers paired with interviews, with media industry leaders. Future work includes qualitative testing of consumer engagement with specific mobile media content innovations. With heavy use of social and mobile media as a means of private and public communication in both Qatar and the UAE, the quantitative survey attested to great enthusiasm for new internet content designed specifically for mobile media---as well as growing interest in emerging augmented and visual reality (AR and VR), both new applications that the public now seems eager to adopt and use.

The book is a timely a case study of the conflict between the convergence or coming together of all media that now conquer time and space (thanks to the computer and high-speed internet) with disruption which is an assault on that unification, according to one of the book’s chapters on “Innovation and Media Disruption.”  As the authors put it, the media-rich states of the Arab Gulf are the right setting for what could be a glimpse of the future.  The book includes a detailed assessment of disruption theory first posited by Professor Clayton Christensen of Harvard Business School and several revisionist critiques of his pioneering research.

In considering trends in the next generation of journalism and media, the authors argue that the emergence of mobile media are the dominant platform for public engagement and offer media leaders opportunities to engage in greater innovation. They are urged to develop more extensive original content designed for mobile hand-held media, to make greater use of immersive and interactive mobile content formats such as 360 video and augmented reality on hand-held devices, expand engagement and interactivity for social media networks and to design mobile media content that takes advantage of what is known as geolocation or geographical tracking of messages and images.

The Mobile Disruptions study is part of a multi-faceted institutional research program at NU-Q that includes a distinctive longitudinal study of Media Use in the Middle East and studies of digital technologies and health communication among others.

Trump and Co’s Middle East fiasco      Cache   Translate Page
SAUDI Arabia has been shaken to its core by the gruesome murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Turkish intelligence has leaked that the Saudi journalist, who wrote op-ed pieces for The Washington Post newspaper, was strangled in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, then cut up into pieces for disposal or dissolved in acid. His remains have yet to be found.

Khashoggi's brazen murder has caused a crisis in US-Saudi relations, an angry confrontation with Turkey, and serious questions about the Saudi war in wretched Yemen, which so far had caused 60,000 deaths and left this remote land facing starvation.

Trump and his allies initially supported the Saudi-Emirati war against Yemen, having fallen for the false claim that great Satan Iran was backing the Yemeni Houthi forces. Britain and Israel strongly supported the Saudi war.

In reality, Saudi Arabia's headstrong Crown Prince Mohammed, got his nation embroiled in a no-win war against tough Yemeni tribes who refused to accept a Saudi-imposed figurehead ruler. The United Arab Emirates, a Saudi ally, also got involved to expand its little country-big ambitions around the Red Sea littoral.

But the Saudis lacked a real army to wage war in Yemen. They feared an army might mount a coup against the royal family as happened in Egypt, Iraq and Libya. In the past, the Saudis had rented crack Pakistani troops to protect their palaces and oil. But Pakistan refused Saudi requests to send troops to subdue Yemen.

As Libya's late leader, Colonel Muammar Gadaffi told me, "the Saudis are a small bunch of rich people living behind high walls in terror of their poorer neighbours". The Saudis hated Gadaffi because he kept calling them "traitors to the Arab cause, prostitutes, whore-mongers and crooks".

Instead, the Saudis relied on their US and British-supplied air force to prosecute the war in Yemen by indiscriminate terror bombing and trying to starve the Yemenis into submission.

Villages and schools were flattened, wedding parties rocketed, school buses attacked.

US and British technicians and military experts kept the Saudi warplanes flying and provided bombs and targeting data from satellites. Western mercenaries fly and service the Saudi and Emirati air force.

No one in the West cared about this massacre until the unfortunate Khashoggi was murdered in Istanbul. This crime allowed disgust with Saudi Arabia over its Yemen war, beheadings and crucifixions to finally take precedence over arms sales and tawdry geopolitics.

The US and Britain finally questioned their billions of arms sales to the Saudis who use these mammoth purchases to buy subservience from the western democracies. France and Germany recoiled from major arms sales. Self-righteous Canada prevaricated, trying to get the Saudi cash while ducking opprobrium for arming a cruel, murderous regime.

Washington's most ardent Israel supporters – Security Chief Bolton, and Secretary Pompeo – rushed to support the Saudis. They repeated the ludicrous claim that Khashoggi was a Muslim Brotherhood member and thus worthy of execution. In truth, the Muslim Brotherhood is a venerable, moderate organisation composed of Arab professionals that calls for democracy.

But the most interesting development may have been the flight from London to Riyadh by exiled Saudi Prince Ahmad Abdulaziz. This 70-something younger brother of King Salman was reportedly given security guarantees by the US and Britain that he would not be arrested by Crown Prince Mohammed when he returned to Riyadh from a golden exile in London.

You could almost hear them yelling "bad puppets, bad puppets" at the Saudi royals. Only two weeks earlier, an unusually frank President Trump had even observed that the Saudi 7,000-member royal family would not last "more than a week" without US support.

He was quite right. Since the 1930's, the Saudi dynasty has been defended and supported by first Britain, then the US.

Few questioned the support of the world's leading democracy for a cruel medieval monarchy. There was too much oil money involved. The British government even quashed criminal charges when huge kickbacks to Saudi royals on aircraft orders were revealed. Washington covered up the Saudi role in the 9/11 attacks and financing of anti-US groups.

Back to Prince Ahmad. Has he been chosen by Washington and London to replace the rash, violent Crown Prince Mohammed?

How worried is the US that the Khashoggi murder could set off a rebellion in Saudi Arabia? Or civil war in the royal family? The aged current king, Salman, is reported to have cognitive problems.

The clumsy, ham-handed meddling of Trump in Saudi dynastic affairs propelled the bull-in-a-china-shop Crown Prince into power. The machinations of Trump's son-in- law, Jared Kushner, and his Israeli allies have ignited the current crisis.

Trump and Co have very much to learn about the Mideast. So far, their attempt to play colonial viceroys has been a fiasco.

Member of the board CPM Trading LTD Rolands Peterson (PRNewsfoto/CPM Trading LTD) A new forecast on the economic activity of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was released. In 2018 it was constant.Rolands petersons de facto It was provided by oil production volume, recent business reforms and constant activities in other areas. In 2018 the UAE for the first time overachieved its OPEN oil production goal.Rolands petersons de facto The UAE is preparing for World Expo in 2020, so a big amount of investment is being made to improve infrastructure. The state could expect an increase of tourism area dynamics, but it will need additional investments not related to oil production and crude oil refining.Rolands petersons de facto This country could still be described in terms of development as long as its population grew from 9 million in 2013 up to 10,1 million in 2017; unemployment fell from 2,8% in 2013 to 1,7% last year]. Even though in 2014 many infrastructural projects were postponed, this year they will be continued, moreover there are new general plans for the following two decades. It was calculated that a recently adopted 5% of VAT will help to gain income in the amount of 12 billion euros during the first year of implementation]. All the Emirates, especially Dubai and Abu Dhabi are continuing their efforts to vary the economy and decrease the amount of activities related to oil products. In addition to the infrastructural projects, Abu Dhabi has made significant investments to the alternative energy sources creation, according to Rolands Petersons, a member of the board of Norman Logistics Sp.zo.o. who offers his thoughts on the UAE economy.Rolands petersons de facto Despite having suffered crises, this country is still a demanded business partner among many world economies, it is being forecasted that before the World Expo in 2020 the UAE will become even an more demanded business partner worldwide.Rolands petersons de facto Juergen Thomas Steinmetz has continuously worked in the travel and tourism industry since he was a teenager in Germany (1979), beginning as a travel agent up through today as a publisher of eTurboNews (eTN), one of the world’s most influential and most-read travel and tourism publications.
