TULSA, Okla. – An Oklahoma family is still searching for answers 45 years after their loved one was brutally murdered. In December of 1973, family members learned that Rickey Bickerstaff was bludgeoned to death while serving in the Marines. His body was found in a storage closet at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. “The next morning at formation, his car was in the parking lot and he wasn’t in formation. So they sent some people out looking for him. One […]

INFORMATION ABOUT "SWING LOW, SWEET CHARIOT"
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swing_Low,_Sweet_Chariot
""Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" is an African American* Spiritual. The earliest known recording was in 1909, by the Fisk Jubilee Singers of Fisk University.

In 2002, the Library of Congress honored the song as one of 50 recordings chosen that year to be added to the National Recording Registry. It was also included in the list of Songs of the Century, by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.

History
"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" may have been written by Wallis Willis, a Choctaw freedman in the old Indian Territory in what is now Choctaw County, near the County seat of Hugo, Oklahoma sometime after 1865. He may have been[weasel words] inspired[citation needed] by the Red River, which reminded him of the Jordan River and of the Prophet Elijah's being taken to heaven by a chariot (2 Kings 2:11). Some sources[1][2] claim that this song and "Steal Away"[3] (also sung by Willis) had lyrics that referred to the Underground Railroad, the freedom movement that helped black people escape from Southern slavery to the North and Canada.

Alexander Reid, a minister at the Old Spencer Academy, a Choctaw boarding school, heard Willis singing these two songs and transcribed the words and melodies. He sent the music to the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. The Jubilee Singers popularized the songs during a tour of the United States and Europe.

The song enjoyed a resurgence during the 1960s Civil Rights struggle and the folk revival; it was performed by a number of artists. Perhaps the most famous performance during this period was that by Joan Baez during the legendary 1969 Woodstock festival.

Oklahoma State Senator Judy Eason McIntyre from Tulsa proposed a bill nominating "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" as the Oklahoma State official gospel song in 2011. The bill was co-sponsored by the Oklahoma State Black Congressional Caucus. Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin signed the bill into law on May 5, 2011, at a ceremony at the Oklahoma Cowboy Hall of Fame; making the song the official Oklahoma State Gospel Song.[citation needed]

Traditional lyrics
Chorus:
Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home

I looked over Jordan, and what did I see?
(Coming for to carry me home)
A band of angels coming after me
(Coming for to carry me home)

Chorus:
If you get there before I do
(Coming for to carry me home)
Tell all of my friends, that I'm coming there too
(Coming for to carry me home)

Chorus (3×)"...

*The Wikipedia page for this song [on November 6, 2018] refer to this song as an "American negro spiritual". I've changed that referent to "African American spiritual" because African American is the formal referent that has been most often used (since at least the early 1970s)most often for the population that was referred to as "American Negroes". Also, spelling "Negro" with a small "n" is generally considered (by African Americans and many others) to be highly offensive.

Also note that this is the only African American Spiritual that I know of which has an identified probable composer. To my knowledge, composers for all the other African American Spirituals are given as "unknown".

EXCERPT ABOUT THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS' RECORDING OF "SWING LOW, SWEET CHARIOT"
From https://www.loc.gov/programs/static/national-recording-preservation-board/documents/Swing%20Low%20article.pdf "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”—The Fisk University
Jubilee Quartet (1909)"
Added to the National Registry: 2002
Essay by Toni P. Anderson (guest post)
"In December 1909, the Fisk University Jubilee Quartet, a male foursome carrying on the legacy of the original Fisk Jubilee Singers of the 1870s, entered the Victor Studios in Camden, New Jersey, to record 12 songs chosen from their concert repertory. Ten of the songs would
eventually be released on five different discs. Among the titles was “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” one of the best-known and beloved Negro spirituals now firmly established in the canon of American folksong. In just one or two takes per title, the Victor recording captured the
quartet’s rich blend and sophisticated performance style. These were the first recordings of the artistic, concert versions of spirituals associated with Fisk University and its accomplished musicians.

The unaccompanied recording of the quartet showcased the talent of four Fiskites: John Wesley Work II (1st tenor), James Andrew Myers (2nd tenor), Alfred Garfield King (1st bass), and Noah Ryder (2nd bass). By the time of the 1909 recording session, Fisk University had earned a
reputation as being the “music conservatory” for aspiring black artists, primarily due to the immense fame of the original Fisk Jubilee Singers, who toured in the interest of the university from 1871-1878. Known for their precise, tight harmony, emotional pathos, and refined stage deportment, the Jubilee Singers, under the direction of George L. White and Ella Sheppard, presented a cultivated version of the spiritual to audiences throughout America and Europe."

Spiritual Keys to Open Windows of Heaven and Receive God's Blessings      Cache   Translate Page

November is one of the most glorious months of the year! It is during this time of jubilant holidays we get to escape from work and school, and with Christmas bonuses we are encouraged to think about others and bless them instead of thinking only about ourselves. We see our favorite bell ringers and hear about all of the great work that is being done all around the world for those who are living without basic necessities. It is a joyous time for humanity to come together and celebrate life! And yet for some people, this time of the year has the opposite effect, and they are filled with dread because they shudder at any opportunity to give their money away. Instead of taking joy in the season of giving, they clench their fist tightly around their money and grumble. For these people, tithing is agony, giving is a veritable apocalypse and missions is Armageddon itself.

This kind of giving fear never seems to be connected to the lottery or casinos, both of which depend on people's faith not in God but in luck and chance. Instead of "agony" and "apocalypse," the world uses :"amazing," "astonishing," "awesome" and "awe-inspiring," power words to describe the $1 billion lottery jackpot. If the world can muster the faith to trust a gamble, why can't God's people trust Him to make good on His infinite promise to provide for their needs and to bless them abundantly?

The kingdom of God is full of people of light, love and life. We are the children of His promises, which include abundant living. His track record of faithfulness to carry out His Word stretches back millennia. And yet stinginess and the fear of lack is nothing new among people. Jesus addressed it head-on. He warns us, "You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money" (Luke 16:13b, NLT), and taught that "if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will commit to your trust the true riches?" (Luke 16:11, MEV). He got to the core of the matter when He declared, "for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matt. 6:21). Pastor Craig Groeschel puts it this way: "We give up things we love for things we love even more."

The truth is, God has money for anything He wants done, and He will channel that money through people. Trusting God with our tithing and giving opens up the windows of heaven to allow God to pour out blessings we cannot contain so that we can be a conduit for His provision. If we believe obedience to the Word of the living God can allow us to conquer any adversary; if we believe that being filled with the Holy Spirit and praying faith-filled prayers have the power to change nations, open up doors that no man can shut and release us to be God's witness to the ends of the world; and if we truly desire to live a life of epic, excellent and exciting power, we must understand what the Word of God has to say about giving. Then we must do what it tells us to do.

It is up to us to share with the world the power that can be gained through trusting Jesus Christ, God's Word and the Holy Spirit. But it is also up to us as leaders, servants, pastors and evangelists to correct people's misperceptions about giving. People may have chosen to block out the Word of God and all that it can offer their life simply because someone in the past presented the idea of tithing in a negative way. There are actual people in the world today who believe all God wants is their money and that there is nothing else for them in Jesus Christ or the church. We must be the ones to help eliminate this lie from the world and help people to understand the true nature and power of God's Word. God is not trying to take away from people; He is trying to open people up so He can bless their lives far beyond measure.

This season, it is also up to teach our congregations the importance of a heart-attitude that trusts God enough to love and bless those who are in need freely, as well as tithe into His kingdom. As we present the Word of God, let us be mindful of the power of our words and the effect they can have on people's perception of God. We must present tithing in appropriate terms. We must present salvation in appropriate ways. We must model for them that when we create a lifestyle of helping others to be blessed by God, He shall bless us in the process! As Proverbs 11:25b (NLT) says, "Those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed."

Be refreshed, be renewed and be blessed.

You are beautiful; I see Jesus in you.

Have an awesome week! {eoa}

'REVERENCE FOR LIFE' - A message by Dr. Lachlan Forrow (Humanist Service)      Cache   Translate Page
The message was delivered on Sunday, November 4, 2018, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Dr. Lachlan Forrow, Guest Speaker, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Medical doctor, philosopher, musician, and scholar Albert Schweitzer won the Nobel Peace Prize for his ethical philosophy known as Reverence for Life in 1952. It was his historical and ethical interpretation of Christianity that first led him on a search for a universal concept of ethics. He concluded that ethics was synonymous with reverence for life: "Reverence for Life affords me my fundamental principle of morality, namely, that good consists in maintaining, assisting and enhancing life, and to destroy, to harm or to hinder life is evil." Today, the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship's vision is to create a global corporation of leaders who promote positive change with and in our communities, our health and human service systems, and our world. Please join us to welcome special guest, Dr. Farrow as he carries on Dr. Schweitzer’s philosophy in our times.  SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org
Tulsa storms back on UConn to take a 49-19 victory      Cache   Translate Page

TULSA, Okla. — Seth Boomer threw for four touchdowns and ran for a fifth as Tulsa ended its seven-game losing streak by pummeling UConn in an American Athletic Conference contest Saturday night.

The Golden Hurricane scored on seven consecutive possessions to blow the game open.

The Huskies took a 10-0 lead after David Pindell hit Kyle Buss with an 80-yard touchdown pass. Michael Tarbutt added a 44-yard field goal to set the double-digit lead and added a 50-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Boomer, a freshman, finished 9 of 14 for 168 yards, hitting Keylon Stokes with a 3-yard pass for Tulsa's first score, then scored from the 1 to take the lead for good, 14-13. He added a 26-yard touchdown pass to Keenen Johnson and the Golden Hurricane (2-7, 1-4) held a 28-13 lead at intermission.

Shamari Brooks had 17 carries for 151 yards and Corey Taylor II added 133 yards on 18 carries, scoring on a 6-yard run just before halftime.

Pindell finished 14 of 28 for 232 yards and two touchdowns for UConn (1-8, 0-5).

LARS ULRICH: METALLICA's 'WorldWired' Tour Could Last Through Early 2020      Cache   Translate Page
Lars Ulrich has told The Mercury News that METALLICA's "WorldWired" tour could last through early 2020. The San Francisco Bay Area metal giants have spent the last two years touring in support of their latest album, "Hardwired… To Self-Destruct", which came out in November 2016. The band has seven U.S. shows booked in late November and early December before taking a break for the holidays and resuming the trek on January 18 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. With dates already locked in through next summer, Ulrich was asked if he is tired of touring yet. He replied: "We have the luxury, and we are very fortunate, to be able to set a touring schedule that works really well for us. We kind of set boundaries. We have a two-week rule, so that after two weeks we come home and see our families and kids and get a sense of San Francisco. So, for about a decade, we've had a really good setup in terms of how we balance all of it. It takes longer to play the same amount of dates. But the good news is that our chances for not losing our minds — or for playing all the shows, physically, mentally — are much higher, because we have a pace that we feel is at the right level for us. So, it's good. We still have to go to Australia. We still have to go to Japan. We have a couple of other things planned after Europe." Pressed about whether there is any chance the tour will reach into 2020, Lars said: "This may just dip into the beginning of 2020." Ulrich also talked about the overwhelmingly positive response to "Hardwired… To Self-Destruct", which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and has topped 5 million copies sold worldwide so far. "The greatest thing about that ['Hardwired… To Self-Destruct'] is that we may have made our most successful record in 25 years in terms of reception. Obviously, this record isn't shipping as many units as records did 10 or 20 years ago. But the perception is that it's probably our most well-received record since the Black Album. So, to have that 30-plus years into your career, and to make a record that connects at that level — still — is crazy cool." He continued: "A lot of people are really taking to the new songs. Like, we'll meet people at meet-and-greets and they'll be, like, 'My favorite song is 'Now That We're Dead',' and, 'My favorite song is 'Halo On Fire'.' This record is being received with the same appreciation as any of our other records. That's something that we didn't expect. And that's something that anyone who has been doing this as long as us should never take for granted."

Have an awesome week! {eoa}

Three Thoughts on Tiger Football      Cache   Translate Page
What kind of difference will four weeks make? It seems like a month since the Tigers have taken the field at the Liberty Bowl. (Because it's been a month since the Tigers took the field at the Liberty Bowl.) At kickoff on October 13th (against UCF), the Tigers were clinging to hope in their effort to repeat as American Athletic Conference West Division champs. But the 31-30 loss to the Knights gave Memphis three league losses and all but extinguished those hopes. The Tigers absorbed a drubbing at Missouri the following week, followed by a bye and finally a road win — their first — last Saturday at East Carolina.

The Tigers will host Tulsa (2-7) four days after Penny Hardaway's Tigers tipped off their much-anticipated season and a day after the Memphis women's soccer team hosts Wisconsin in a first-round NCAA tournament game at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Yes, the case could be made that Saturday's football game is the week's third-most significant event involving blue-clad Tigers. And, once more, a weak sister on the other sideline. Add the Golden Hurricane's record to those of the four FBS teams Memphis has beaten and you have a combined mark of 9-35. But it's a Catch 22 this season. The Tiger defense isn't fit to beat prime competition, so a happy exit from the Liberty Bowl for local fans seems to require bottom-feeding competition. It will be interesting to see not just the attendance figure Saturday morning (kickoff is 11 a.m.), but the mood of those in the stands.

The Darrell Henderson story continues to thrill. Henderson ran for 132 yards and scored three touchdowns last week at East Carolina, but it actually didn't feel like a Darrell Henderson game. Perhaps this is because only one of his scores covered more than 50 yards (the others were merely 20 yards and 39 yards). This is how skewed our perspective — or at least my perspective — has become in the season's ongoing highlight reel. Henderson's 1,280 yards are the most in Memphis history (single season) by a man not named DeAngelo Williams. His career total of 2,916 is second only to Williams' 6,026. (Read that latter figure again, in case you've forgotten just how great a college player Williams was.) Henderson has scored 18 touchdowns (tied for tops in the country) and two more trips to the end zone will tie him with Anthony Miller on the Tigers' career chart with 40 (second to Williams's 60). He actually has a chance to break one of Williams's records: 23 touchdowns in a single season (2004).

Henderson is third in the country with 44 plays of at least 10 yards (behind two wide receivers). He's had 15 plays go at least 30 yards and nine at least 50. The numbers are as silly as they seem. Enjoy every Henderson carry (or catch) the rest of the season. He may be playing on Sundays a year from now.

How soft has the Tiger defense become? Well, the numbers (and rankings) are ugly. Out of 130 FBS programs, Memphis ranks 95th in scoring defense, allowing 31.6 points per game. The Tigers are 86th in total defense (417.2 yards per game) and 80th in opponents' third-down conversions (40.4 percent). Memphis has allowed 132 plays of at least 10 yards, also 80th in the country.

The good news? The Tigers are on track to score 500 points for the fourth year in a row, thus the 5-4 record to date. But the U of M requires a significant transformation on the defensive side of the ball before we return to a discussion of Top 25 possibilities.

WINTER PEOPLE Comes to Boston Playwrights' Theatre      Cache   Translate Page

Boston Playwrights' Theatre (BPT) continues its 2018-19 season with Winter People by Laura Neill. Running from December 6-16, this new drama is directed by Avital Shira.

Set in the exclusive enclave of the Hamptons-the idyllic summer playground to the rich and famous on New York's Long Island-Winter People focuses on the fates of five local families after a fire destroys one of the island's summer mansions. Playwright Neill says the work is inspired by the Long Island summer town where she grew up.

"Winter People is a play about the people who actually make up the fabric of the Hamptons, a simmering melting pot that bubbles over with wealth disparity and prejudice," she says.

Each actor plays an entire family and represents one of five key communities on the island.

"I'm exploring the heritages, both physical and emotional, that each family and community carries...and how one's birth plays directly into one's fate.," Neill says. "With this workshop production, I'm excited to explore the triple-casting and find out how it emphasizes the stories of the play. I'm honored to be working with such a talented team, a mix of professional, graduate, and undergraduate artists who come from varied backgrounds and bring their own unique perspectives to the rehearsal room."

A post-show conversation with Winter People's playwright, director, and cast members will follow the Dec. 8 performance.

Neill is a member of the Boston University M.F.A. Playwriting Program class of 2019. Her play DIVAS was commissioned by OperaHub and premiered last summer, and Don't Give Up the Ship was produced by Fresh Ink Theatre Company in 2017. She is currently one of the playwrights commissioned for SpeakEasy Stage Company's The Boston Project to write Just Cause, a horror comedy about gentrification. Director Shira is currently an M.F.A. directing candidate at Boston University and a founding company member of Sycamore Theatre Company. Shira's recent directing credits include Cymbeline (Boston University), Intimate Apparel (Boston University), Lifeboat (Corrib Theatre), Between Friends (Sycamore Theatre Co @ The Brick), and Love's Labours Lost (Post 5).

All of this season's plays were written by the Boston University M.F.A. Playwriting Program class of 2019. These Actors' Equity Association productions will be co-produced with the Boston University College of Fine Arts School of Theatre as part of the New Play Initiative.

BPT's season continues in February with Laughs in Spanish (formerly titled Wynwood) by Alexis Scheer and Dead House (in April) by Beirut Balutis.

ABOUT THE BOSTON UNIVERSITY NEW PLAY INITIATIVE

The BU New Play Initiative (NPI) expresses the Boston University College of Fine Arts' commitment to the School of Theatre's participation in the development of new work. This special initiative provides playwrights, directors, designers, and actors with a variety of developmental options to support the collaborative creation of new work for the theatre. Students, faculty, alumni, and guest artists are given the opportunity to utilize the creativity of the rehearsal room to develop their plays, which are then presented through workshop productions. The life of these new plays doesn't end on the BU stages. Many New Play Initiative productions are often later fully produced by member companies of our Professional Theatre Initiative, including the School of Theatre's professional extension-Boston Center for American Performance. www.bu.edu/cfa/npi

Eric Patrick Clapton (Ripley, 1945. március 30. ? ) a Brit Birodalom Rendje (CBE) kitüntetés tulajdonosa, becenevén ? Slowhand? (? Lassúkezű? ), Grammy-díjnyertes brit gitáros, énekes és zeneszerző. A rock-korszak egyik leginkább megbecsült és legnagyobb hatású gitárosa, akit egyedülálló módon háromszor is beiktattak a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-be. Clapton a rockzene történetének egyik legnagyobb hatású zenésze.
Bár karrierje során többször váltott stílust, zenéje megőrizte a blues hagyományait. Claptont karrierjének több szakaszában is újítónak tartották, ezek közül kiemelkedik a blues rock (The Yardbirds és John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers) és a hard rock (Cream) terén nyújtott teljesítménye. Különböző stílusokban is komoly sikereket ért el: delta blues (a Robert Johnson tiszteletére megjelent Me and Mr. Johnson című album), pszichedelikus rock ("Sunshine of Your Love"), pop ("Change the World") és reggae ("I Shot the Sheriff").

Bixby Bomber Found Not Guilty By Reason of Insanity      Cache   Translate Page
A man accused of detonating a pipe bomb outside an Oklahoma military recruiting station has been found not guilty by reason of insanity. Court records in Tulsa indicate a federal judge handed down the verdict Tuesday to 29-year-old Benjamin Roden. The former Air Force senior airman was indicted for destruction of government property after a pipe bomb exploded in front of an unoccupied Air Force recruiting station near Tulsa on July 10, 2017. No one was hurt. The ruling states psychological examinations of Roden proved he had "a severe mental disease or defect" and didn't understand what he was doing when the offense occurred. Federal prosecutors agreed to the verdict. The judge ordered Roden to remain in federal custody for treatment. Roden has been required to take antipsychotic medication.
Mother Road Market Opening Nov. 2      Cache   Translate Page
The 27,000-square foot Mother Road Market will open Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation President and CEO Elizabeth Frame Ellison said Tulsa’s first food hall aims to do more than be just a new attraction. "We were really looking to help businesses launch and scale in the food industry in a way that wasn’t impossible. Because building a kitchen is very expensive, and starting a business is also very overwhelming and expensive," Frame Ellison said. People just getting their feet wet in the food industry will be side-by-side with well-known Tulsa restaurants trying new concepts. "The established businesses are in a position where they can mentor the new businesses and really give them advice on, 'Here’s how you hire your staff and train them. Here’s the best way to start up when you’re preparing. Here’s what you should look for in your food costing,'" Frame Ellison said. Planning for Mother Road Market started around five years ago, and the Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation’s

Rowdy Plane Passenger Given Probation      Cache   Translate Page
A Washington state man who pleaded guilty to screaming at a flight attendant on a commercial flight and forcing it to make an emergency landing in Oklahoma has been sentenced to probation. Federal prosecutors in Tulsa say 29-year-old Bolutife Olorunda of Vancouver, Washington, was sentenced Wednesday to three months of probation. Olorunda pleaded guilty to a federal assault charge in July and agreed to pay Delta Airlines $9,118 for the cost of diverting the aircraft. Prosecutors say Olorunda verbally assaulted and interfered with a flight attendant on a May 30 flight from Portland, Oregon, to Atlanta, prompting the pilot to declare an emergency and land in Tulsa. The flight eventually continued to Atlanta. The FBI alleged Olorunda sang and screamed during the flight and threatened the flight attendant who tried to quiet him.
Tulsa Officials Turn to Columbus for Ideas on Annual Intercity Visit      Cache   Translate Page
Columbus, Ohio, is where Tulsa officials are looking for inspiration this year on an annual intercity visit. Incoming Tulsa Regional Chamber Chair David Stratton said higher education is one of the things they’re taking a close look at, including Columbus’ community college and ties to Ohio State University. "And just how that helps them attract more people and really make for a diverse workforce, that was a big piece that we looked at," Stratton said. Diversity and inclusion is another area they’re learning more about from Columbus, especially from a leadership group seeking to boost women’s position in the workforce. "Pay equity, promoting women to higher positions. And that was, I think, for us, kind of the last piece that just made Columbus a really nice fit which mirrored a lot of the priorities that we’ve got at the chamber," Stratton said. Support for entrepreneurs is another thing officials are looking at. And the firm developing Tulsa’s Arena District Master Plan is

I was a former employee of Newfield, when we were drilling gas wells in the Arkoma Basin in 2007 and gas prices were the highest they had ever been, it was not cash flow positive. It actually ate all the revenue from the rest of the company. Getting to be in the black for the play was always a year off. a decade later it never got there, they just got more and more debt sold more producing assets to pay for it to keep the shell game going and just got bought by Encanna. I have seen the same at every public company I have worked for, many of them survived the downturn only because costs dropped and so did the cost of debt. Now with increasing costs and cost of debt there will likely be many bankruptcies.
