I baristi vogliono l"esercito.

Chitwood Announced as Candidate for International Mission Board’s Presidency      Cache   Translate Page

IMB CHITWOOD SPEAKSRICHMOND, Virginia—The International Mission Board trustees’ Presidential Search Committee announced Tuesday, Nov. 6, that the committee will recommend Dr. Paul Chitwood, 48, to be elected as the 173-year-old entity’s 13th president.

RICHMOND, Virginia—The International Mission Board trustees’ Presidential Search Committee announced Tuesday, Nov. 6, that the committee will recommend Dr. Paul Chitwood, 48, to be elected as the 173-year-old entity’s 13th president. The vote to elect Chitwood is scheduled for the Nov. 15 plenary session during the Nov. 14-15 IMB board meeting in Richmond.

Paul Chitwood, currently executive director of the Kentucky Baptist Convention, has been nominated as the 13th president of the Southern Baptist Convention International Mission Board.Paul Chitwood, currently executive director of the Kentucky Baptist Convention, has been nominated as the 13th president of the Southern Baptist Convention International Mission Board.A former board chairman of trustees for the Southern Baptist Convention's global mission organization, Chitwood currently serves as executive director of the Kentucky Baptist Convention, the state’s largest religious organization with 750,000 members in 2,400 churches and 70 associations. He has served in the role since 2011.

For 18 years, Chitwood served as the pastor of local churches of varying sizes: First Baptist Church, Mt. Washington (2003-11), where he is a member; First Baptist Church of Somerset (1999-2003); First Baptist Church of Owenton (1995-99); and South Fork Baptist Church in Owenton (1993-95). As a pastor, his churches averaged giving 18.5 percent through the Cooperative Program.

During his pastorates, he served as chairman of the IMB trustees from 2008-10, part of his tenure as an IMB trustee from 2002-10. His overseas short-term mission involvement includes work in Brazil, Peru, India, China, South Africa, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Kenya, England, Spain, Germany and Haiti.

“A decade ago, I had the privilege of working with IMB President Jerry Rankin, Clyde Meador, Tom Elliff, and David Steverson to pen the IMB’s vision statement,” Chitwood said. “While the wording was and is important, it simply captures the vision God has graciously given us in His Word. It’s His vision, and the culmination of the work that He has been doing through His church and, since 1845, through Southern Baptists. Our vision is unchanged: a multitude from every language, people, tribe and nation knowing and worshiping our Lord Jesus Christ.”

‘We need him’

“It is so obvious that God has been preparing Paul for this role in so many ways,” said Dr. Rick Dunbar, chairman of IMB’s trustees and a member of the search committee from Madison, Mississippi. “Examine his work history, denominational experience, trustee background, educational history, leadership and team-building history; hear his heart for missions and the Lord, to be shared with the entire world; listen to his wife as she eagerly anticipates this role — and I think you will agree: We need him.”

Dunbar said the more the search committee talked, prayed and thought about Chitwood, “the more the entire committee has come together united in knowing he is God’s choice for our next president. He has the biblical foundation, a heart for missions and a proven track record of leading a big organization.”

Dr. Chuck Pourciau, chairman of the Presidential Search Committee and senior pastor of Broadmoor Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana, echoed Dunbar’s endorsement.

“Little did the Presidential Search Committee anticipate the meandering path that would be this search,” Pourciau said. “There were many twists and turns, but our commitment remained singular. It didn’t matter what path we took as long as we ended up in the right place. The right place is to locate and recommend to the trustees the person God had already chosen as the next leader of the International Mission Board.

“We are unanimously agreed that we have done just that in recommending to the IMB trustees Dr. Paul Chitwood as our next president. Dr. Chitwood is uniquely qualified to lead us into the next era of Southern Baptists reaching the nations. His missions heart and leadership acumen will serve us well in the years to come. I am eager to watch God work through him as he leads our international missions efforts. Yes, brothers and sisters, we did indeed arrive at the right place, and that right place is Dr. Paul Chitwood.”

‘Passionate about missions’

Paul ChitwoodPaul ChitwoodAs executive director of the Kentucky Baptist Convention, Chitwood has led the organization to a greater focus on strengthening local churches, planting new congregations, evangelizing the unchurched, and shifting more funding to international missions. He identified the need to move more Cooperative Program funds from state mission budgets to the Southern Baptist Convention budget and, ultimately, to the IMB budget. Last year, the convention reported more churches planted and growth in the number of Kentucky Baptists involved in volunteer mission work in Kentucky and around the world.

In consideration of leading the largest denominational missionary-sending body among American evangelicals, Chitwood has stated that he is committed to the organization’s next executive vice president being someone with significant mission-field experience. Chitwood has traveled extensively overseas in support of the IMB and worked alongside IMB missionaries, Dunbar said, which gives him a view into the missionary life and task but also makes him realize how much he will depend on men and women who have long-term overseas experience.

“I am very happy to join with the rest of the Presidential Search Committee in recommending that Dr. Paul Chitwood be approved as our next IMB president,” said Duane Ostem, an IMB field leader from Asia who served on the committee to provide a field-based perspective. “Dr. Chitwood is passionate about missions. He understands the workings of the IMB. He loves missionaries. His humble but strong leadership style will enable him to work well with our Richmond personnel, our field missionaries, and our Southern Baptist churches. His vision for the future will inspire and guide the IMB as we seek to make disciples of all nations.”

By Chitwood’s request, pending trustee approval, Dr. Clyde Meador will remain in the President’s Office as interim EVP during the transition. Meador has served as IMB interim president since Sept. 27, 2018.

“I have known Paul for 16 years and have consistently been impressed by and thankful for his commitment to the spread of the gospel to the ends of the earth, as well as his excellent leadership skills,” Meador said. “When Paul was serving as chairman of IMB trustees, he became an integral part of the leadership team, even to the point of having a significant part in crafting our vision statement that continues as a guide even today.

“Paul’s keen insight, leadership strength, commitment to the Great Commission, humility, and understanding of the lost world that lies before us, as well as unusual knowledge of the SBC, all combine to make him the ideal next president of IMB.”

‘A proven leader’

Chitwood was Kentucky Baptist Convention president in 2005-06; first vice president in 2003-04; and president of the state pastors’ conference in 2002. He was chairman of the SBC Committee on Nominations in 2015-16, and he also has served on several other state mission committees and in associational leadership committees. He has served as a trustee of Crossings Ministries, Sunrise Children’s Services, Kentucky Baptist Foundation, Oneida Baptist Institute, Baptist Haiti Mission, and Bridges to Nigeria.

He is an adjunct professor of leadership at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He previously has been an assistant professor of missions and evangelism at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, University of the Cumberlands and Boyce College.

A native of Jellico, Tenn., Chitwood is a 1992 graduate of Cumberland College (now University of the Cumberlands), where he has served as a trustee. He earned a master of divinity degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1995 and a doctorate from the seminary in 2001. He currently is pursuing a master’s degree in nonprofit administration from the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame.

“As I have studied our IMB history and our past presidents, it is clear that God continues to build on the foundation laid down by so many,” Dunbar said. “I have served as a trustee under Jerry Rankin, Tom Elliff, David Platt and Clyde Meador. They are all different, but I believe that each was called to this position with a unique perspective and giftedness, and we thank God for all of them. Paul brings a unique perspective also. He is a proven leader, motivator, and mobilizer, he is committed to missions, and he gives his all to the pursuit of God’s will.”

Chitwood and his wife, Michelle, have been married for 25 years. Their family includes son Daniel, 22, and daughter-in-law Derrika; daughter Anna, 20; daughter Cai, 12; and a foster daughter, age 6, who they hope will soon join the family through adoption.

“Michelle, his wife, is fully committed to this role, and we see qualities in her that will compliment Paul in the president’s role,” Dunbar said. “She is eager to be an active part and sees this as a calling for her also. She embraces the challenges this role presents. She sees their family’s role not as a sacrifice but an opportunity. She will be a great asset to the IMB. You will love her.”

Transitional activity

On Feb. 12, 2018, former president David Platt asked trustees to begin their search for the next president of the mission entity. The trustees’ presidential search committee accepted presidential nominations through May 15, and a committee of more than a dozen trustees plus a former field leader have worked diligently since February. Trustees will vote on the recommendation of Chitwood as president during their plenary session, scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 15, at 10 a.m. EST.

Prior to the vote, Southern Baptists will honor the appointment of new missionaries during a Sending Celebration in Richmond on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. EST. Join the celebration via Livestream. Forty-two Southern Baptists will be presented as candidates for appointment at the Nov. 14 meeting.

Senegal farmers

The picture often painted for us is that we need corporate seeds to feed the world: they are alleged to be more efficient, productive and predictable. Locally developed farmer varieties are painted as backwards, less-productive and disease-ridden. But those of us with our feet on the ground know that this is not the reality in Africa.

I live in the U.S. Recently, I returned from a visit to Senegal, my third. I no longer stay in Dakar but in locations elsewhere.

Years ago, in Philadelphia, I met a man from Dakar, Abe, who would later allow me to accompany him home. It would be my first trip to Africa.

We stayed in Dakar for a week when he said he had to make a trip home. This meant to his birthplace in a small village very southeast in Senegal. I asked to go and, after great consideration, he said yes. We went by car, bus, car again, and many times on foot, for four days, arriving in his home village, deep in south east Senegal.

In the U.S., Abe rountinely had sex with me. We were about the same age, in our 40s. Abe was 100% total top, and I accomodated him as often as he would let me. While considering myself very much a versatile top, I learned first hand the seduction of hearing an elder African accent pouring out the words "I want to f*** you".

But in Senegal, he would not even discuss it. I understood. I'm causcasian. It's Africa. While at his home, his father and his father's brother, men of 70+ years of age, took me into a small home where, to be blunt, promptly undressed and asked me to bathe them. The broken english was so bad, had they not been naked and rubbing each other out I would not have known what they were saying. I later learned they mistakingly thought I was a servant of Abe's. Once they were confident I got the idea of why I was there, as I performed my chores, they began to talk to each other in Wolof as though I was invisible. Sure, I was very nervous, but no one ever had to tell me what elder meant in Africa.

The next day, I was asked if I wanted to visit a nearby National Park and was told that, where we would be going, we would have to stay overnight, in make-shift tents. We would have to stay just outside the Park. I said sure, and Abe helped me simplify my packing. Abe did not travel with us as I am left to the safety of totally strange men. As I find out 1 hour into the walk, men who do not speak english. And this is a really, really big park.

At this time of year it was very dry, and hot, but at night, it would get somewhat agreeable around 2-5am. The night sky would be so crystal clear it was like you could touch it. You would never know there were so many adult African men. From total strangers walking by, speaking only to others in passing, to men camped in small groups. The night air is what cools them, what frees them to think. And they so do like to walk.

After visiting the Park, the last night in the tents, we had a little too much to drink, and several of the men, in Wolof, said they must walk. One thing led to another and I ended up following them ... at 3am.

We walked for sometime, until I realized I could no longer see them, and soon came upon a small camp, no tents, but with a fire that had just been put out, and was still smoldering. As I looked around into the darkenss, I could hear through my dizzyness from the drink, what I thought were giggles, and whispering.

I walked into the woods. My chest began to pound uncontrollably but I could not turn around. Where would I turn to? For a moment, I thought, no one in the world knows exactly where I am at this very moment, and just as I thought how entoxicating and freeing that is, the thought of Abe not knowing where I am shook me.

As the whispering turned into chanting, singing, I came onto a small clearing, around 30 yards in diameter. It was probably just me, but the moon was so bright, it was like the area was lit up like a room. I literally could not see to the other side of the clearing.

But there stood, before me, two very large men, both at least 250 lbs, basically doing what amounted to a slow motioned coregraphed wrestling match. They were surrounded by the men I had followed, some I saw while walking, and several others, all told about 15-18 men. They were all naked. Except for the two wrestlers, none were younger than me.

Eventually I got the nerve to not try to hide in the small bush I found myself in, when I felt both my arms go limp. I'm talking numb. I was led into the circle, and undressed. I felt sure I was about to faint. The feeling was constant. The chanting became a rhythmic rain eventually blurring me into subconsciousness.

Soon, I was startled by this seemingly disturbing argument between one of the wrestlers and an older man, perhaps in his 60s. I was quickly taken back into the woods and kept there for what seemed like forever, but probably about 20-30 minutes. Each time the voices grew loud and aggressive, I would be petted and held more closely. The scent of African sweat only made me more drunk. Several times I felt myself falling to my knees wanting to orally please anything that came about. I was constantly being held up. As best I remember, that's all that happened in the wooded areas.

Then the most strange thing that has ever happened to me in my life occured. All the men around me slowly walked away, one by one, until all I could see was the well lit area near me. Feeling my vision closing in on me ever so subtly, I walked out of the woods into the clearing.

The wrestler, now completely alone, motioned me to him. As I got close I fainted. When I awoke I was being kissed and caressed. He would not stop looking at my eyes. Every time I went to close them, he would get upset. I could not understand anything he said, most the times he wasn't talking to me anyway, but I understood clearly he wanted my eyes open.

In the end, he had his way with me to completion. He made sure of it. But to say this event was only sexual would be a lasting flaw in my character. He dressed me, walked me for awhile, once I noticed he had disappeared, soon others came about, smiling, waving, pointing the direction for me. No more giggling, no more whispering, no more arguing.

What happen to me that night changed my life.

Two days later, on our way back to Dakar, while resting, I asked Abe, who I thought knew nothing about what had happened, would he ever want me to talk about what I did in Africa. He only shook his head. About three days out we are in another National Park, and while being entertained, a white European couple now living in Cape Verde, makes a point of cautioning the other 'tourists' about wandering near National Parks late at night without escort.

I never felt so un-tourist in all my life.

From www gvnet.com I transfer the fllowing passage.

Human Trafficking and Modern-day Slavery

The Gambia is a source, transit, and destination country for children and women trafficked for the purposes of forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation. Within The Gambia, women and girls, and to a lesser extent boys, are trafficked for sexual exploitation, in particular to meet the demand for European sex tourism, and for domestic servitude. Boys are trafficked within the country for forced begging by religious teachers and for street vending. Transnationally, women, girls and boys from neighboring countries are trafficked to The Gambia for the same purposes listed above. Primary source countries are Senegal, Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Benin. Trafficking of Gambian boys to Senegal for forced begging and Senegalese boys to The Gambia for the same purpose is particularly prevalent. Gambian women and girls are trafficked to Senegal for domestic servitude, and possibly for sexual exploitation. Gambian women and children may be trafficked to Europe through trafficking schemes disguised as migrant smuggling. Reports in the last two years of Gambian, Senegalese, and nationals of other neighboring countries being transported from The Gambia to Spain by boat appear to be predominantly cases of smuggling rather than trafficking. - U.S. State Dept Trafficking in Persons Report, June, 2008 [

Cache   Translate Page

I shared the stage with a beaker of poop in China

It’s not often you stand on a stage next to a sample of human feces.

Yesterday, I used a beaker of poop as a prop during my speech at the Reinvented Toilet Expo in Beijing. It caused some giggles in the crowd—but I brought it out to draw attention to a serious issue that kills more than 500,000 people every year: poor sanitation.

More than half of the world’s population uses unsafe sanitation facilities. The pathogens from their waste find their way into the local water supply and make people sick. Innovation was a key driving force behind China’s economic transformation, and I believe it can do the same for improving sanitation. As I wrote on TGN yesterday next-generation, sewer-less toilets have the potential to transform the lives of millions of people.

I spoke about the potential and promise of these toilets during my speech. Here is the full text of my prepared remarks:

Remarks as prepared

Reinvented Toilet Expo

November 6, 2018

Beijing, China

Good morning, and thank you, Ms. Tian, for that kind introduction. I’d like to thank Mr. Chen Zhou, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, and the China Chamber of International Commerce for co-hosting this event.

It’s great to be in China again, and it’s fitting that we are meeting here for the Reinvented Toilet Expo. In recent decades, China has made great progress improving health and sanitation for hundreds of millions of people. President Xi’s Toilet Revolution underscores China’s commitment to accelerating progress on safe sanitation. And China has an opportunity to help launch a new category of innovative, decentralized sanitation solutions that will benefit millions of people worldwide.

Although the people in this room come from varied backgrounds—government, the private sector, development banks, academia, and philanthropy—we are all here for one reason: because more than half the world’s population doesn’t have the safe sanitation they need to lead healthy and productive lives.

Those of you in government are here because you want to find a way to solve the large and growing problem of what to do about human waste, especially in urban areas.

Those of you in the private sector are here because—with new advances in technology—you see a market opportunity to meet the needs of 4.5 billion people worldwide. Opportunities of that scale don’t come along very often.

You might guess what’s in this beaker—and you’d be right. Human feces. This small amount of feces could contain as many as 200 trillion rotavirus cells, 20 billion Shigella bacteria, and 100,000 parasitic worm eggs.

In places without safe sanitation, there is much more than one small beaker’s worth in the environment. These and other pathogens cause diseases like diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid that kill nearly 500,000 children under the age of five every year.

Unsafe sanitation also puts a huge economic burden on countries that can least afford it. Globally, it costs an estimated $223 billion a year in the form of higher health costs and lost productivity and wages.

And the problem will get worse if we don’t do something about it. Population growth, urbanization, and water scarcity over the next few decades will make it even more difficult for cities in Africa and Asia—cities that are already struggling with inadequate sanitation systems—to break the cycle of disease and poverty associated with unsafe sanitation.

I became interested in sanitation about a decade ago when I stopped working full time at Microsoft, and Melinda and I began traveling more frequently to poor countries.

We visited communities where children were playing in lanes filled with human waste, where pit latrines were emptied by hand, where the stench of community toilets was so bad that people didn’t want to use them, and where families drank water contaminated with human waste.

This was a dimension of poverty we hadn’t seen before, and it motivated us to try to do something about it. It wasn’t just the degradation and suffering that people face every day doing something that’s essential and natural for all human beings. It was also because so much of what Melinda and I seek to achieve in saving and improving lives can’t be accomplished unless people everywhere have safe sanitation.

It became clear to us that if the world was going to continue making progress against the diseases of poverty, we’d have to create a new way of looking at—and eventually solving—the global sanitation crisis.

In 2009, I posed a question to a group of scientists and engineers: was it possible to leapfrog the long-accepted“gold standard”of sanitation: flush toilets, sewers, and treatment plants?

Could we come up with a more affordable approach that could kill pathogens and keep pace with the needs of fast-growing urban areas—without requiring sewer infrastructure or reliance on scarce water resources or continuous electricity to operate?

Some people were skeptical that this was achievable. I get it. it’s hard to envision a totally different way of doing something that is so deeply rooted; that just feels like“the way things are.”

Early in my own life and career, there was a time when“the way things were”in computing  was a big mainframe computer that only large corporations and governments could afford. Some of us had another idea. We dreamed about personal computers that anyone could use. A lot of people told us we were crazy. But we believed in it and found other people who shared our vision. Now, people can’t imagine the world the way it was back in the day of the mainframe.

I believe it is possible to achieve something like this in sanitation, and that’s why we have invested more than $200 million over the last seven years working with partners to develop a new generation of non-sewered sanitation technologies.

There were two main things we knew we had to accomplish. The first was to make it easier and cheaper to effectively manage fecal sludge across the sanitation service chain.

This diagram shows the scale of this problem. In the Global South, 62% of fecal sludge is not safely managed. In some cities, the problem is much worse. In one city in South Asia, 97% of human waste is untreated. And many countries are not yet even reporting how much of their waste is getting treated.

Some of the untreated human waste is in unlined pit latrines that contaminates groundwater around people’s homes. Some is collected manually, or by trucks, and is dumped into nearby fields or bodies of water. And some is collected in sewers but never gets treated. The point is that we are far from the goal the world set in 2015 of everyone using a safely-managed toilet.

To help address this problem, we worked with partners to develop a small-scale treatment plant to process fecal sludge and biosolids from pit latrines, septic tanks, and sewers. The self-powered technology—which can be located almost anywhere—is called the Omni-Processor. It takes in human waste, kills dangerous pathogens, and converts the resulting materials into products with potential commercial value—like clean water, electricity, and fertilizer.

The second challenge was to invent a pathogen-killing toilet that is also self-contained—with a tiny treatment plant built in. We call this the Reinvented Toilet, which is actually a collection of innovative technologies that use different approaches to break down human waste and destroy germs—leaving behind clean water and solids that can be used as fertilizer...or that can be disposed of safely outdoors without further treatment.

The initial demand for the Reinvented Toilet will be in places like schools, apartment buildings, and community toilet facilities.

As adoption of these multi-unit toilets increases—and the cost continues to drop—a new category of reinvented toilets will become available for use in people’s homes—in developing countries where people have limited resources and in developed countries for people who want or need an off-grid household toilet.

Let me show you one example of what the reinvented toilet could look like for household use—designed by the Swiss engineering firm, Helbling.

In addition, partners have made great progress developing other breakthrough technologies to control malodors, separate urine from solids, manage menstrual hygiene, and treat liquids.

I have to say, a decade ago I never imagined that I’d know so much about poop. And I definitely never thought that Melinda would have to tell me to stop talking about toilets and fecal sludge at the dinner table.

But I’m quite enthusiastic about what has been accomplished in just seven years. This expo showcases, for the first time, radically new and pilot-tested approaches to sanitation that will provide effective alternatives for collecting, managing, and treating human waste. The technologies you’ll see here are the most significant advances in sanitation in nearly 200 years.

None of this would have been possible without an exceptional worldwide team of engineers, scientists, companies, and universities committed to reinventing the urban sanitation system.

It’s exciting that solving the problem of unsafe sanitation will also create a new multi-billion-dollar business opportunity.

One of the things we’re able to do as a foundation is invest in the early stage R&D needed to create a path forward for the private sector to commercialize technologies and products that also help us achieve our goals. It’s a real win-win.

Consider just the new generation of reinvented toilets. We estimate that by 2030, this will be a $6 billion a year global business opportunity. If you add the Omni-Processor and related products and services, the market potential for decentralized sanitation solutions is likely much larger.

Like all transformative technologies, the next step is to scale these advances in collaboration with all of you.

Today, I’m pleased to say that a growing number of companies are ready to take orders for Reinvented Toilets and for the Omni-Processor. Companies like Clear, Eco-San, SCG Chemicals, and Eram Scientific Solutions are announcing their first reinvented toilet products. And CRRC, Sedron Technologies, Ankur Scientific, and Tide Technocrats are announcing their Omni-Processors.

Other commercial partners will be announcing the availability of products based on Firmenich’s innovative solution for malodor control.

In total, more than 20 companies are business-ready with innovative, non-sewered sanitation products. And I understand that Lixil, a new partner, will be telling us more about their involvement later this morning. This is the first wave of new sanitation solutions and technologies—with more to come.

But it’s not enough for companies to be interested in making and selling new products. It’s also important for national and local governments to create an enabling environment with policies and regulations that encourage innovative sanitation service models, including with the private sector.

I’m encouraged by the leadership of a growing number of countries that are embracing a smart approach to safe sanitation, such as India, South Africa, Senegal, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

China’s Toilet Revolution and its action plan for accelerating progress on safe sanitation underscores its potential as a launch market for non-sewered sanitation solutions. It’s notable that three of the partners making announcements here—Clear, Ecosan, and CRRC–  are based in China. This highlights China’s interest in commercialization of off-grid sanitation solutions to meet not only the demands of China’s domestic market but also the needs of a global market ready for change.

We look forward to China adopting a high-level standard [ISO30500] for the non-sewered sanitation industry, which will further accelerate its leadership of a new commercial sanitation sector.

There is also positive momentum among finance and development institutions. The World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the African Development Bank are announcingcommitments with the potential to unlock $2.5 billion in financing for City-Wide Inclusive Sanitation projects.

These commitments will help provide people in all parts of a city—including the poorest neighborhoods—with safely-managed sanitation services. And the banks’pledges could help accelerate adoption of off-grid sanitation solutions—like the ones exhibited here—in low- and middle-income countries.

In addition, UNICEF and the French Development Agency will announce new strategies and commitments to accelerate deployment of innovative sanitation solutions. This is all great news.

We try to be thoughtful about the role of philanthropy—and one of the things we’re best placed to do is lower barriers and risk for the private sector and for governments to adopt new solutions to solve big problems.

That’s what we’ve tried to do with our investment so far in sanitation—so others can further develop, pilot, market, and sell these new solutions. We’re committed to supporting these efforts with an additional $200 million for continued R&D to help bring down the costs of new products for the poor, and to support market development in regions where new, non-sewered sanitation solutions can have the greatest impact.

Today, we are on the cusp of a sanitation revolution. It’s no longer a question of if we can do it. It’s a question of how quickly this new category of off-grid solutions will scale. We don’t know exactly how long that will take, but we do know it can’t happen fast enough.

Thank you.

There is a unique space where you can encounter everyone from developers of self-driving cars in Silicon Valley to city planners in Niamey to humanitarian workers in Kathmandu Valley: the global OpenStreetMap (OSM) community. It comprises a geographically and experientially diverse network of people who contribute to OSM, a free and editable map of the world that is often called the “Wikipedia of maps.”

What is perhaps most special about this community is its level playing field. Anyone passionate about collaborative mapping can have a voice from anywhere in the world. In the past few years, there has been a meteoric rise of locally organized mapping communities in developing countries working to improve the map in service of sustainable development activities.

The next opportunity to see the OSM community in action will be the November 14th mapathon hosted by the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR)’s Open Data for Resilience Initiative (OpenDRI). Mapathons bring together volunteers to improve the maps of some of the world’s most vulnerable areas, not only easing the way for emergency responders when disaster strikes, but also helping cities and communities plan and build more resiliently for the future.

GFDRR’s engagement with local OSM communities

[[tweetable]]The 2010 Haiti earthquake served as a wake-up call about the need for access to better quality information for reducing vulnerability to natural hazards and climate change impacts.[[/tweetable]] In the years since, OpenDRI has turned to the OSM platform as an important way to bring people together to create open data, learn new skills, and support the human networks that eventually become key actors for resilience. We can gather people in a room around something exciting, like a mapathon, and start a conversation about sharing information for the benefit of everyone.

[[tweetable]]Any data, technology, or tool is only as valuable as the way and the extent to which people use it[[/tweetable]], and that’s why building sustainable mapping communities is so critical for this work. Even as we engage governments to promote the use of open data and open source tools, OpenDRI also strives to nurture local communities of OSM users and developers from universities, NGOs, and innovation hubs. To that end, OpenDRI supports local OSM communities and conferences like “State of the Map” whenever possible, particularly by funding scholarships for attendees who would not otherwise get to attend, learn, and share knowledge.

Participatory mapping in Asia and Africa

OpenDRI started its work with OSM by supporting the growth of local mapping communities in  Indonesia, the Philippines, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, including through the Open Cities Project. Many of these communities were quick on their feet to respond to the devastating 2015 earthquakes in Nepal. More than 6,000 volunteers helped add data to the OSM platform, mapping up to 80 percent of affected zones, an effort which continues to provide invaluable information to emergency response and preparedness efforts. In the years since, OSM communities across Asia have come together to exchange knowledge and build connections at a series of open source mapping conferences. The fourth “State of the Map Asia” conference will take place in Bangalore, India, this month.

In Africa, the stakes for OSM are even higher, because it is often the only digital map available for many locations. Recent years have brought a rise of participatory mapping communities across Africa, which now total more than 30 active local OSM groups. Africa’s first-ever “State of the Map” conference was held in Kampala, Uganda in 2017.

Building on that momentum, OpenDRI recently launched the Open Cities Africa project, currently supporting the development of teams in 11 cities across Africa. These teams are taking the lead in collecting data remotely and on-the-ground through participatory mapping, thus building mapping capacity in their local OSM communities. They are also collaborating with World Bank teams to use the new OSM data to help address a range of development challenges, from urban flooding in Kinshasa to coastal risk management in Senegal. Drawing on our experiences in Asia, we are incorporating novel approaches in our engagement in Africa, including online learning, gender integration, disruptive technologies, and design research.

What’s next for local OSM communities?

About this series
More blog posts

Local OSM communities are hopeful that the future will see a larger and more diverse population of mappers worldwide – this will be key to improving the “Wikipedia of maps” even further. As technology giants join the global OSM community, we are now exploring how new machine learning mapping techniques might complement and amplify the work of local OSM communities.

Over the past seven years, the OpenDRI team has been hard at work to create local communities around open-source mapping as part of our drive to promote open data for resilience, and that effort will continue.

To discover the OSM community for yourself and learn more about the benefits of using geospatial data for addressing the world’s most critical development challenges, join us on Wednesday, November 14 for the OpenDRI mapathon at the World Bank.

Art Review: 'I AM: Contemporary Middle Eastern Women Artists and the Quest to Build Peace,' Cathedral of St. Paul      Cache   Translate Page
It's not often Vermonters get to view artwork by major contemporary women artists of the Middle East. A traveling exhibition of single works by 31 such artists, now on view at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Burlington, is an extraordinary opportunity to do just that. "I AM: Contemporary Middle Eastern Women Artists and the Quest to Build Peace" includes works by Arab and Persian artists who are Muslim or Christian. Seven are from Bahrain; the rest are from Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Iran, Palestine, Yemen, Morocco, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Iraq or Saudi Arabia. The range of mediums represented is gratifyingly diverse, from oil and acrylic paintings to photography, collage, ink on paper, digital prints, scanography, mixed media, sculpture and, in one case, human hair affixed to calf vellum. Some of the artists are based or were trained in the UK, the U.S. or Europe. High-end auction companies Christie's and Sotheby's represent a few of them, and nearly all have been exhibited and collected internationally. All the works are for sale, and these artists' integration in the global art market accounts for why the show would seem at home in any contemporary gallery in any major U.S. city. So, how did it end up on the concrete walls of St. Paul's, an Episcopal church? "I AM" is a peace-building project of Caravan, a nonprofit founded in Egypt in 2009 by Paul-Gordon Chandler, an American Episcopal priest. The son of a minister, he grew up in Senegal "surrounded by other faiths and art," Chandler said during a phone call, and was educated in Côte d'Ivoire and England. He launched Caravan during a 10-year posting in Cairo; its mission is to use the arts to unite people of different backgrounds and faiths in an effort to build sustainable peace. Caravan's art exhibition began as a citywide East-West arts festival in Cairo that continued annually until 2013, when president Mohamed Morsi was overthrown. That year's exhibition traveled to London while Caravan itself moved, with Chandler, to Chicago. Every Caravan exhibition since has also toured the U.S. St. Paul's former dean and rector, the Very Reverend Jeanne Finan, who retired in October, had been following Chandler's work. She emailed him when she spotted an online call for venues for "I AM." Thus Burlington became the last — and smallest — stop on the tour of an exhibition that opened at the Jordan…

O episódio mostra a performance inaugural/“instauração” dessa galeria.

          Yete      Cache   Translate Page

Senegal's national dish, thieboudienne, has a crucial, pungent ingredient: the fermented flesh of sea snails. Known as yete (alternately spelled yet or yeet), these large marine mollusks are buried in the sand for several days, then sun-dried. Only then are they ready to impart a "signature saline funk" to Senegal's signature fiery fish-and-rice dish.

Some diners say the yete has a leathery texture, a smoky aroma, and a briny flavor that also tastes a bit musky. Though there is no true substitute for snail flesh, in its absence, cooks opt for Southeast Asian fish sauce to impart a comparable brininess. But many claim that yete is less intense than the other aquatic flavoring added to thieboudienne. Guedge, a dried, fermented fish also integral to preparing the traditional dish, is rank enough make yete seem relatively mild.

Zara to bring online sales to 106 new markets through new platform      Cache   Translate Page

From tomorrow, customers from 106 new countries will be able to shop Zara’s fashion online for the first time. The brand’s parent company, Inditex, has announced the launch of a new dedicated online platform (www.zara.com/ww) which will increase the number of markets where Zara is sold online to 202.

Most of these new markets are in Africa and include Angola, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Ghana. The platform will be available in English and French.

Customers will be able to place orders in euros, including applicable shipping costs and customs charges, and pay by PayPal and credit cards. While the orders will processed in Spain, where Inditex is headquartered, the products will be shipped from the closest country to where the customer lives. Zara currently operates stores in 96 countries, with an online presence in 49 of them. According to a company statement, orders are expected to be delivered within three to seven days, depending on the destination.

The launch of the new platform is part of Inditex’s goal to make “all of its brands available online anywhere in the world by 2020”, as stated by its chairman and CEO Pablo Isla during the opening of Zara’s flagship store in Milan, Italy, earlier this year.

Suuf in Senegal      Cache   Translate Page
