Bữa trước, nhân Ngày Đau Thương của Hoa Kỳ (September 11), tôi đem tâm tình của một người Mỹ gốc Việt bị mất quê hương để nói chuyện nước nhà với vị giáo sư người Mỹ có vợ Việt Nam, nói tiếng Việt rất giỏi. rất hiểu tình hình chính trị, văn hóa Việt Nam và đặc biệt rất yêu đất nước Việt Nam. Tôi đã dùng chữ “Anh” để gọi giáo sư cho thân mật.

Hôm nay, nhân ngày 1 tháng 11, ngày đánh dấu nền Đệ Nhất Cộng Hòa bị chính quyền của Tổng thống John Kennedy bức tử vào năm 1963, tôi viết thư này cho giáo sư với tư cách là một người Mỹ gốc Việt quan tâm đến tương lai của Hoa Kỳ.

Người ta thường nói: “Nhân dân nào, Chính quyền đó”. Tôi cho rằng không đúng. Phải nói “Trí thức nào, Chính quyền đó” thì mới đúng. Bởi vì sự thông minh của mỗi người là do Trời ban cho, nên mới có chữ Thiên Phú. Thông minh khiến cho người được thừa hưởng từ Trời mà có tâm chân chính, trí sáng suốt và lòng can đảm thì trở thành người trí thức dẫn dắt nhân dân. Vì tổ tông Việt trên bước đường mở mang bờ cõi đã tiêu diệt dân tộc khác, nên con cháu bị lãnh hậu quả “Đời cha ăn mặn, đời con khát nước”.

Trong một bài viết, tôi đề cập đến câu chuyện của giáo sư Lê Tuyên kể rằng một vị linh mục ở Tây Ban Nha bảo cho biết nước Việt Nam từ lâu đã bị xâm chiếm bởi những oan hồn trở lại trần thế để báo thù. Những oan hồn đó chính là dân tộc Chàm bị diệt chủng!

Những người Việt mệnh danh giải phóng dân tộc, giành độc lập, nhưng đã rước về một tôn giáo của Quỷ với chủ trương tiêu diệt nền tảng gia đình, tôn giáo và tổ quốc. Loài quỷ đó là cộng sản, có khả năng mê hoặc khiến cho những nhà trí thức giống như bị thôi miên, nhắm mắt tôn thờ quỷ sứ mà Tố Hữu đã hô hào toàn dân:

Giáo sư thử nghĩ xem: Nhân dân đang thờ Tổ Tiên, thờ Phật, thờ Chúa… bỗng nhiên bọn Viêt cộng bắt phải đạp bỏ tất cả để chỉ thờ những tên sát nhân, thế mà trí thức ùn ùn đi theo, thì có phải trí thức đã bị quỷ ám hay không? Dân ngu trông thấy trí thức (!) theo thì mình cũng theo; chứ còn chờ đợi gì nữa? Thế là cả nước lần lượt “hân hoan” đi vào … địa ngục Cộng sản!

Thân sinh triết gia Trần Đức Thảo đã than thở: “Nếu trước kia tôi cho anh học nghề thợ mộc, thợ nề thì ngày nay cái thân anh đỡ khổ, cái thân tôi đỡ khổ và cái dân tộc này cũng đỡ khổ”. Câu than thở đó là đủ cho ta thấy người Việt Nam bị quỷ ám, nên càng học thì càng ngu; càng có bằng cấp to thì càng đần. Và cũng vì bị quỷ ám, toàn dân trở nên phản bội nhau, khiến cho họ không nhìn thấy hiểm họa chết người ngay trước mắt.

Trong thư trước, tôi có nói trình độ kiến thức của tôi không đáng là học trò của những nhà thông thái Hoa Kỳ, nhưng tôi có cái nhìn xa hơn họ về tương lai của xứ sở, vì tôi có kinh nghiệm của kẻ mất nước. Các bậc tiền bối dạy: “Biết mà không nói là bất nhân; nói mà không nói hết là bất nghĩa”. Vì vậy mà tôi phải nói và những điều tôi sắp sửa nói sẽ làm cho các nhà thông thái bị chạm tự ái, nhưng thuốc đắng mới dã tật!

Trong dân gian Việt Nam có câu nói được truyền tụng khá phổ biến. Đó là: “Chưa thấy quan tài, chưa đổ lệ” (Without seeing a coffin, nobody ever shed tears”.

Theo sự quan sát và sự nghiền ngẫm của tôi, tôi nhận thấy trí thức Hoa Kỳ cũng đang bị quỷ ám như Việt Nam. Nếu không, tại sao bỗng dưng đảng Dân Chủ lại nỗ lực đẩy nền chính trị Mỹ vào con đường Xã Hội Chủ Nghĩa tồi bại, dơ bẩn bậc nhất mà nhân loại đã lên án và ném nó vào thùng rác lịch sử?

Tôi xin dẫn chứng tại sao Hoa Kỳ bị quỷ ám: Nước Mỹ là quốc gia được dựng lên bởi những người có đức tin mạnh mẽ vào Đấng Cứu Thế Jesus Christ. “In God We Trust” là lời tâm nguyện người dân không được phép xa rời những điều trong Thánh Kinh dạy.

Sở dĩ nền dân chủ của Mỹ xứng đáng cho nhiều quốc gia noi theo, vì bản Tuyên Ngôn Độc Lập và Hiến Pháp được các vị tiền bối Jonh Adam và Thomas Jefferson viết ra là dựa vào tín điều trong Thánh Kinh mà ai nấy đều tuân thủ. Do đó, từ khi lập quốc, nước Mỹ chưa hề có cuộc đảo chánh nào. Không hề có Đệ nhất Cộng Hòa, Đệ nhị Cộng Hòa, Đệ tam Cộng Hòa … như nhiều nước khác.

Thế nhưng, những nhà chính trị trong đảng Dân Chủ, tự cho mình thuộc thành phần cấp tiến, ủng hộ cách sống phóng túng (liberal), phá thai, đồng tính luyến ái, ma túy và chứa chấp tội phạm giết người … (sanctuary city) là những điều đi ngược lại tín lý Thiên Chúa. Tôi tự hỏi: “Tại sao cuộc khủng bố của những tên Hồi giáo quá khích lại xảy ra vào tháng 9 ngày 11? Tại sao nó không xảy ra vào một ngày nào khác, mà lại là Tháng 9 Ngày 11? Con số 911 người Mỹ dùng để kêu cứu trong trường hợp nguy cấp. Phải chăng đây là tín hiệu được Thiên Chúa cảnh cáo nhân dân Hoa Kỳ?”

Nhưng dường như những nhà lãnh đạo tôn giáo, nhà lãnh đạo chính trị không nghĩ đó là sự cảnh cáo. Cách sống (life style) càng hướng về phía phóng túng hơn, được những tài tử Hollywood sa đọa tung tiền ủng hộ những ứng cử viên có xu hướng phóng túng.

Nếu tin rằng “một sợi tóc rơi cũng là ý Chúa”, thì ông Barack Hussein Obama, một tín đồ Hồi giáo (Anti Christ) trở lại đạo tại nhà thờ Trinity mà vị mục sư (Jeremiah Wright) luôn mồm gào thét “God Damn America” lên làm Tổng thống của một nước vừa mới bị quân khủng bố Hồi giáo gây kinh hoàng, cai trị một đất nước “In God We Trust”, phải chăng đấy là một sự cảnh cáo thứ hai?

Tôi biết có một số người nghĩ như tôi, nhưng họ ngại nói ra. Tôi dám nói, bởi vì tôi tin sự quả báo là có thật! Chẳng hạn, Tổng thống John Kennedy ra lệnh giết anh em Tổng thống Ngô Đình Diệm, thì sau đó không bao lâu anh em nhà Kennedy cũng bị giết!

Sau khi đắc cử Tổng thống, ông Barack Obama mới đưa chữ “Hussein” vào tên lót (middle name) của mình.  Ông Obama chỉ là “community leader” may mắn đắc cử Thượng Nghị sĩ của Tiểu bang Illinois, vì ứng cử viên Cộng Hòa, Jack Ryan, đang dẫn đầu, phải rút lui vì bị báo chí tố giác scandale. Nói về kinh nghiệm chính trường, Obama chưa hề có một thành tích gì đáng kể trước khi được bầu làm Tổng thống.

Nước Mỹ đã mất rất nhiều nhân lực, tài lực, vật lực để đánh bại cộng sản. Nay nhân dân Mỹ chọn một nhân vật có tư tưởng cộng sản và Hồi giáo chống Chúa (Anti Christ), thì có phải đó là một sự nghiêm trị của Chúa hay không?

Trong 8 năm làm Tổng thống, ông Obama đã nâng số nợ công từ 10 ngàn tỉ lên 20 ngàn tỉ đô la, bằng tổng số nợ của tất cả các đời Tổng thống gộp lại. Obama đào sâu sự chia rẽ chủng tộc với khẩu hiệu “Black Life Matters”, cúi rạp mình xin lỗi các Quốc vương Hồi giáo ở Trung Đông và Hoàng đế Nhật Bản. Lãnh đạo nước Mỹ bị khinh khi đến độ Tập Cận Bình buộc xuống máy bay đàng sau đuôi, mà cũng lủi thủi vâng lời; chứ không dám phản ứng. Obama cấm không được dùng chữ “Islam Terrorist” và “Merry Xmas” trong dịp lễ Giáng sinh. Obamacare còn ra luật buộc các bệnh viện Công giáo không được từ chối người phụ nữ đến yêu cầu được phá thai … Theo thống kê, mỗi năm có vào khoảng 600 ngàn thai nhi bị giết chết bằng tiền thuế của người dân.

Đảng Dân chủ ngày nay không còn là đảng Dân Chủ của thời Ted Roosevelt, Truman và Kennedy nữa. Đảng Dân chủ dùng tất cả các thủ đoạn y hệt Cộng sản như vu khống, chụp mũ, bôi nhọ … đối phương để giành quyền lực về tay mình đúng với phương châm cộng sản “Cứu cánh biện minh phương tiện”. Chưa bao giờ trong chính quyền Mỹ mà có hiện tượng Bộ Tư pháp, FBI, CIA, NSA biến thành công cụ cho một đảng. Nguyên tắc “If you cannot beat them, join them” không còn được áp dụng nữa! Từ ngày ông Donald J. Trump đắc cử, người ta chỉ thấy đảng Dân chủ tìm đủ mọi cách để phá hoại; chứ không hề thấy họ có một kế sách nào để góp sức làm cho dân giàu, nước mạnh.

Trong vụ Ủy ban Tư pháp Thượng Viện chuẩn nhận Chánh án Brett Cavanaugh vào Tối cao Pháp viện, người ta nhận rõ hành động tồi bại của các Nghị sĩ Dân chủ dàn dựng người làm chứng gian – Tiến sĩ Christine Blassey Ford – tố giác ông Cavanaugh xâm phạm tình dục một cách hết sức bỉ ổi. Luật pháp Hoa Kỳ chỉ xem một người có tội khi Tòa Án có đầy đủ chứng cớ rõ ràng. Nay các nhà làm luật của đảng Dân Chủ bất chấp nguyên tắc đó, tôi xin hỏi giáo sư: nền dân chủ Hoa Kỳ đang bị phá sản, đúng không?

Mới đây bà Tiến sĩ Christine Blassey Ford thú nhận với cơ quan điều tra rằng bà chưa hề gặp ông tòa Brett Cavanaugh. Bà bị xúi giục và muốn nổi tiếng !!!

Vì ám sát là phạm pháp, đảng Dân chủ dùng cái gọi là “Character Assassination” để truất phế Tổng thống mà người ta gọi là “Coup d’Etat” (Đảo chánh). Những thành quả Tổng thống Trump mang lại cho nước Mỹ quá rõ ràng; nhưng đảng Dân chủ không đủ lương thiện để nhìn nhận. Đảng Dân Chủ chỉ biết chống với chống và cản trở lịch trình mà Tổng thống đã cam kết với cử tri mà thôi. Bọn báo chí mệnh danh “mainstream” thì không còn giữ đạo đức nghề nghiệp “Fair – Balance – Accuracy”, chỉ đăng tin một chiều và phịa tin láo để hạ nhục ông Donald Trump, một vị Tổng thống đã tạo được rất nhiều thành tích trong gần hai năm cầm quyền mà mọi người đều trông thấy. Phong trào Walk Away bỏ đang Dân Chủ tổ chức rầm rộ ở Thủ đô Hoa Thịnh Đốn ước lượng có hơn 5 ngàn người tham dự. Nhiều nghệ sĩ Da Đen tố giác đảng Dân Chủ chỉ lợi dụng sắc tộc để giành quyền, chứ không hề có mục đích nâng cao cuộc sống của họ. Báo chí, truyền hình phe tả làm như không hề có sự kiện đó xảy ra.

Kẻ thù cực kỳ nguy hiểm trước mắt của nước Mỹ cần phải đối phó là Trung Cộng; chứ không phải Donald Trump. Đảng Dân Chủ hăm dọa nếu họ chiếm đa số ở lưỡng viện Quốc Hội thì sẽ hạch tội để truất phế Tổng thống, Tôi không tin đảng Dân Chủ đạt được giấc mơ đó; bởi vì tôi hy vọng nhân dân Hoa Kỳ đã sáng mắt, khi chứng kiến những trò bẩn thỉu của đảng Dân Chủ.

Không cần đợi tới lúc Giám đốc FBI, Christopher Wray, nói gián điệp Trung Cộng đủ mọi ngành đang hoạt động khắp 50 tiểu bang Hoa Kỳ, tôi cũng biết điều đó trước rồi. Vì là người từng có kinh nghiệm đối đầu với Việt Cộng, tôi rất hiểu chủ trương xâm nhập, chui sâu trèo cao, thì cộng sản Việt hay Tàu đều giống nhau. Do đó, trong nhiều bài viết tôi đã nhiều lần đề cập “Đạo quân Thứ năm” (The Fifth Column) của Trung Cộng.

Tôi có cảm tưởng các chính trị gia đảng Dân Chủ và bọn truyền thông tả khuynh đều được Trung Cộng rải tiền (rất lớn) ra mua chuộc, nên họ bất chấp sự tồn tại của nền tự do, dân chủ nước Mỹ. Tôi còn nghĩ rằng những từ ngữ “liberal” hay “Extreme Left” là để che giấu hai chữ “Cộng Sản”, giống như Việt Cộng có thời kỳ gọi đảng của chúng là đảng Lao Động để che mắt mật thám Thực dân Pháp. Phương thức hành động của đảng Dân Chủ hoàn toàn rập khuôn theo cái thói lưu manh của Việt Cộng, nếu không ai phản kháng, ngăn chặn thì nước Mỹ sẽ tiêu vong.

Chẳng hạn, Việt Cộng gọi quân cán chính VNCH là ngụy quân, ngụy quyền; trong khi chính Việt Cộng là bọn ngụy. Cũng như dân biểu Maxime Watters hô hào dân chúng tấn công người nào làm việc cho Tổng thống Trump ở nơi buôn bán, trạm xăng, tiệm ăn… và cựu Bộ trưởng Tư Pháp Eric Holder dưới thời Obama thì kêu gọi “When they go low, we kick them”. Thế nhưng, đảng Dân Chủ và truyền thông thiên tả lại cáo buộc  ngôn ngữ của Trump kích động bạo lực nên mới xảy ra vụ thảm sát tại nhà thờ Do Thái ở Pennsylvania! Còn Chuck Schumer khóc sướt mướt khi ông Trump ký sắc lệnh tạm thời ngưng cho dân các nước Hồi giáo Trung Đông vào đất Mỹ mà trước đó, năm 2009, Schumer đòi nghiêm khắc trừng trị người nhập cư bất hợp pháp! Bà Hillary Clinton thì vận động phục hồi nền văn minh (civility) của xã hội Mỹ mà không hề lên tiếng về vụ sinh viên khuynh tả ở Đại học California Berkeley đốt phá cơ sở vật chất, vì nhà trường mời một diễn giả bảo thủ đến nói chuyện! Obama thì giành lấy thành quả kinh tế tăng trưởng của Trump là do anh ta mang lại.

Xin hỏi giáo sư, mai đây đảng Dân Chủ lên cầm quyền, mà thành phần lãnh đạo thì điêu ngoa, tai ngược, không biết xấu hổ và báo chí thì bất lương, rồi nước Mỹ đi về đâu?

Tiến sĩ Paul Krugman, người được giải Nobel về kinh tế, viết trên tờ New York Times rằng nếu Donald Trump đắc cử Tổng thống thì thị trường chứng khoán Mỹ sẽ sụp (crashed) và lạm phát sẽ tăng cao. Lời đe dọa đó, tôi nghi, ông Tiến sĩ Krugman được Trung Cộng đút rất nhiều tiền nhằm đánh đổ ông Trump và giành phiếu cho bà Hillary. Nay ông Trump làm cho kinh tế nước Mỹ đi lên, nạn thất nghiệp giảm, tại sao Tiến sĩ Paul Krugman không có một lời xin lỗi vì sự dự đoán sai của mình.

Tôi xin nhờ giáo sư nói cho những nhà trí thức Mỹ biết rằng người Tàu là vua hối lộ. Đừng vì đồng tiền mà phản lại các cha đẻ nền dân chủ Hoa Kỳ!

Trước năm 1975, tôi vốn khinh bỉ bọn trí thức ở với VNCH, mà lại đi theo Việt Cộng. Ngày nay tôi cũng khinh bỉ những trí thức Hoa Kỳ thiếu lòng tự trọng như ông Tiến sĩ Paul Krugman. Một ứng cử viên Tổng thống như Hillary Clinton vi phạm nền an ninh quốc gia, nói dối như ranh, xóa hơn 30 ngàn email và đập bỏ tất cả dụng cụ điện tử, mà được 10 trường Đại học danh tiếng nước Mỹ “endorsed” thì tôi thấy trí thức Mỹ cũng bị quỷ ám, giống như trí thức Việt Nam.

Phải chi những đại trí thức của Mỹ (tức là của thế giới) khi thấy những thành quả mà Tổng thống Donald Trump mang lại cho nước Mỹ,  ít nhất họ phải có một lời khen tặng và công khai tố giác với quốc dân những hành vị phá hoại của đảng Dân Chủ, mới đúng.

Chiến lược của cộng sản là trường kỳ mai phục. Bọn trí thức Mỹ thân Cộng đã có từ lâu. Khi Tổng thống Reagan, năm 1983, gọi Liên Xô là Đế quốc Ma Quỷ (Evil Empire) thì bọn trí thức tả khuynh vội lớn tiếng yêu cầu Tổng thống Reagan phải xin lỗi Liên Xô! Các trường Đại học danh tiếng của Mỹ đều có xu hướng “Liberal” là có dụng tâm nhồi sọ tư tưởng xã hội chủ nghĩa vào đầu óc tuổi trẻ chưa có kinh nghiệm cộng sản,. Các bậc phụ huynh Việt Nam tị nạn cộng sản, vì bận lo làm ăn nuôi con hoặc vì không đủ tiếng Anh để giảng giải cho con cái về tội ác của cộng sản, rất buồn phiền vì con cái của mình ủng hộ bà Hillary.

Tôi có thể nói mà không sợ sai lầm rằng lãnh đạo đảng Dân Chủ, trí thức khuynh tả, truyền thông “mainstream” đều là những phần tử đạo đức giả.

Họ tỏ ra thương xót đoàn người di dân Nam Mỹ thì tại sao họ không yêu cầu Clinton Foundation, tỳ phú George Soros bỏ tiền ra bảo đảm an ninh, nhà ở, y tế, thực phẩm, việc làm cho di dân? Nếu con cái hay thân nhân bọn đạo đức giả này bị những di dân phạm pháp, băng đảng giết thì họ có ủng hộ hay không? Chắc chắn đoàn di dân đó là lực lượng tấn công Hoa Kỳ do thế lực Ma Quỷ thúc đẩy, xúi giục, vì họ vừa đi vừa đốt cờ Mỹ và đả đạo Donald Trump!

Là người Chống Cộng triệt để, tôi ủng hộ Tổng thống Donald J. Trump, vì ông nhìn thấy âm mưu của cộng sản như tôi nhìn thấy. Đó là một chế độ tàn ác, quỷ quyệt, nghèo đói, phản tiến bộ, biến người dân thành súc vật. Nếu đảng Dân Chủ phá hoại Tổng thống Trump để đoạt quyền hành cai trị xứ sở này, mà trí thức ủng hộ hoặc im lặng, thì tôi bảo đảm danh hiệu nước này sẽ là nước Cộng Hòa Xã Hội Chủ Nghĩa Hoa Kỳ, tự thân làm đàn em hoặc chư hầu của Trung Cộng, giống như Việt Cộng ngày nay.

Xin giáo sư đừng cho rằng tôi bi quan. Tôi là một Phật tử, thờ Phật ở nhà. Nhưng tôi tin bàn tay của Chúa đã dựng lên đất nước này, thì Chúa cũng có thể hủy diệt đất nước này, nếu đám con cái Chúa phản lại giáo huấn của Ngài, ngã theo con đường sa đọa.

Bắt chước Tổng thống Reagan, tôi cũng khẳng định rằng Trung Cộng là Đế quốc Ma Quỷ. Cho nên, tôi rất tâm đắc về việc Tổng thống Donald Trump mớm lời cho vị nữ Tổng thống Đài Loan – Thái Anh Văn – nói lên chỗ yếu của Trung Cộng là đập thủy điện Tam Hiệp. Đó là cách ông Trump mượn bà Thái Anh Văn cảnh cáo Trung Cộng để tránh phe Dân Chủ và truyền thông thổ ta cáo buộc ông hiếu chiến. Nếu Trung Cộng vẫn chủ trương bành trướng, quyết tâm hạ bệ Hoa Kỳ, không chịu chung sống hòa bình trong Cộng đồng Nhân loại thì không khó khăn gì để bị Hoa Kỳ và thế giới xóa sổ.

Giáo sư đã dày công vận động dân chủ, nhân quyền cho Việt Nam, nhưng không thành công, vì bọn cầm quyền Việt Cộng là bè lũ bán nước. Chừng nào chế độ độc tài man rợ Trung Cộng bị sụp đổ vì đòn kinh tế của Tổng thống Donald Trump, lúc đó toàn dân Việt Nam sẽ tống cổ tập đoàn Việt Cộng xuống địa ngục. Bởi vì lúc này Trung Cộng đang cai trị Việt Nam thì dân chúng khó lòng đứng lên.

Tuy là một đệ tử Phật, nhưng hằng đêm tôi cầu nguyện Thiên Chúa rũ lòng thương xót để khai hóa đầu óc ngu muội của lãnh đạo đảng Dân Chủ và trí thức khuynh tả, để không những cứu nước Mỹ, mà cứu cả thế giới này. Cộng sản là quỷ, xin Chúa hãy trừng trị chúng!

Our era has one particular feature where it differs from previous ages: people are more interested in information than in knowledge. The growth of the Internet has meant that we’re bombarded on a daily basis with information and news and aren’t interested to the same extent in the study of spiritual texts, be these Scripture, the Fathers, or theologically beneficial writings. Indeed, we often become defenders of Patristic and ascetic theology, which is a good thing, but without also showing the same enthusiasm for studying the works of the Fathers. This despite the fact that we can now find a large number of them posted on the web. But in this case, Patristic theology ceases to be a way of life and is reduced to a mere ideology. We shall attempt to stress the need for the study of Christian texts, invoking and highlighting two important examples from the life of our Church.

At a young age, Saint Augustine (354-427) was influenced by the degenerate environment in which he lived and was drawn into an immoral life-style. Indeed, in the belief that he’d find the answer to the great problems that were troubling him, he became a follower of the Manichaean heresy. When he was thirty-two, however, he was walking in his garden thinking about what was occupying his mind when he heard a child’s voice saying ‘Take this and read it’. He opened the book of Saint Paul’s Epistles, which was at hand, and his eyes fell on the passage from Romans (13, 13-14): ‘Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh’. These words of Saint Paul’s moved the heart of Saint Augustine and the great and redeeming moment of Divine Grace came to him then: ‘No sooner had I finished reading those few words’, he tells us, ‘than light immediately poured into my heart, bringing with it peace and dispelling the darkness in which my doubts had shrouded it’. At that moment he became a different person. From then on, he would live only for Christ and the Church.

The second example is from the life of the great Russian writer, a giant figure in world literature, Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821-1881). When he was a young man, he was an atheist and, having been involved in political disturbances, was sentenced to four years’ exile in Siberia, in 1849. On the way to exile, a devout Christian woman gave the 28-year-old Dostoyevsky a copy of the New Testament, for comfort. Since he was an atheist, when he was in exile Dostoyevsky would tear out a page of the book to clear out the pipe he used to smoke. Until the time came when he was so bored that he decided to find out what this Christian book actually said. The first passage in the torn-up book was the story of the Prodigal Son. Reading this and then the rest of the New Testament shook him to the core and revealed a new world to him: that of acquaintance with God. This brought about his transformation into one of the most important Orthodox Christian intellectuals.

The above examples reveal the great transformational power available to all of us through spiritual study: study of the Holy Scriptures, Patristic texts, lives of the Saints, hymns of the Church and beneficial books that present and interpret the Church’s teaching. Saint Epifanios of Cyprus says that Christian books are a necessary acquisition, since the mere sight of them makes us less liable to sin and moves us to virtue.

Saint John Chrysostom teaches us that the lines and words of a spiritual book, especially those of Holy Scripture, are Chrsit’s clothing. Just as garments cover us, so the pages of Holy Scripture conceal Christ Himself (see PG 48, 994). Whenever he received an invitation, Abba Sisoï would say: ‘I can’t find the time to come’, because he didn’t want to break off from the spiritual study that gave him divine knowledge (see PG 65, 401A). Saint Seraphim of Sarov read the whole of the Gospel every week. According to Abba Filimon, ‘through uninterrupted prayer and study of the Scriptures, the spiritual eyes of the soul are opened and they see the King of Hosts’ (Philokalia, vol. II). Saint Kallistos Angelikoudis says that reading the Holy Scriptures, and the Saints who explain them, stimulates the mind and helps it to attach itself to God (Philokalia, vol. V).
