Five OKC Schools Selected For Disney Musicals In Schools Program      Cache   Translate Page

Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma is pleased to announce the five new schools that have been selected to participate in the 2018-19 Disney Musicals in Schools program. The program is an initiative developed by Disney Theatrical Productions to create sustainable theater programs in under-resourced elementary schools. The five schools are a part of Oklahoma City Public Schools. The five schools include: Adelaide Lee, Hawthorne, John Rex, Pierce, and Willow Brook elementaries.

The selected schools will begin a 17-week musical theater residency in the spring. Each school will receive performance rights, education support materials and guidance from two teaching artists. The program features a professional development focus, through which participating school teachers partner with Lyric Theatre teaching artists to learn how to produce, direct, choreograph and music direct, culminating in their first 30-minute Disney KIDS musical at their school. As a capstone to the experience, Lyric will host a Student Share Celebration in which each school performs one number from their show on the Oklahoma City Civic Center Music Hall stage for an audience of students, teachers, family, and community members. This mark's Lyric's inaugural year with the program.

Using the unique world of musical theater, Disney Musicals in Schools helps to foster positive relationships between students, faculty, staff, parents, and the community. Students and teachers work in teams, developing the wide spectrum of skills needed when producing a piece of musical theater, including: critical thinking, problem solving, ensemble building, communication, self-confidence, and interpersonal skills.

Disney Musicals in Schools was launched in 2010 in response to Disney Theatrical Production's concern that under-resourced public elementary schools were not afforded equitable access to the arts. After successfully offering the program in New York City schools, Disney Theatrical Productions began partnering with organizations in other communities across the United States.

Disney KIDS musicals, created in partnership with Music Theater International (MTI), are 30-minute musicals designed for elementary school performers and have been adapted from the classic Disney films 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, The Aristocats, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, and Winnie the Pooh.

Report: NBA execs believe Kawhi Leonard prefers Clippers over joining LeBron James on Lakers      Cache   Translate Page
It appears Kawhi Leonard might fall more into the Kyrie Irving school of thought about playing with LeBron James. The Los Angeles Lakers’ entire strategy over the past two seasons has been fairly simple when you get down to the bare bones: Establish a young core, get LeBron James, then get another superstar. With Paul George committed to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Kawhi Leonard is now widely seen as that next superstar the Lakers will be targeting.

KS-Gov: Holy shnikeys!!! MSNBC is calling this race for Democrat Laura Kelly, who is currently beating Republican Kris Kobach, the leading GOP vote-suppression crusader in the country, by a 52-40 margin. This is AMAZING.

Wednesday, Nov 7, 2018 · 3:04:23 AM +00:00 · David Nir

MI-Gov: A great pickup for Dems, as this race is called for Gretchner Whitmer. VA-02: An excellent pickup in a difficult race, this one is called for Dem Elaine Luria. NY-11: Hard to believe, but NBC is calling this one for Dem Max Rose. PA-07: This one is called for Dem Susan Wild. All of the preceding are pickups. WI-01: Republican Brian Steil has held the seat of retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan, beating Democrat Randy Bryce.

Wednesday, Nov 7, 2018 · 3:06:43 AM +00:00 · David Nir

WV-03: This incredibly pro-Trump open GOP seat is called for Republican Carol Miller, who beats Democrat Richard Ojeda. Her current 56-44 margin is much, much tighter than Trump’s 73-23 spread, though.

OK-05: This one is a bit crazy. Democrat Kendra Horn is edging Republican Rep. Steve Russell 50.6 to 49.4 with 78% reporting in a very red seat in Oklahoma City that polls had shown Russell holding.

BẦU CỬ 2018 & NGƯỜI MỸ GỐC VIỆT (Genie Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Giao)       Cache   Translate Page

Genie Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Giao  -  Voice of Vietnamese Amerians
05/11/2018

Attorney criticizes OKC Catholic archdiocese for comments about priest      Cache   Translate Page

By Randy Ellis Staff Writer rellis@oklahoman.com

The attorney for a Catholic priest suspended from ministry by the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City says he is considering filing a defamation lawsuit against the archdiocese.

"Please be advised that I represent Father James Mickus and we are investigating a claim of possible defamation as a result of a talk you gave at the church in Chandler, press statements issued under your authority ..., as well as a letter which it appears you sent to other priests in the Archdiocese," Enid attorney Stephen Jones said Monday in a letter to Archbishop Paul Coakley.

Coakley on Sunday announced the removal of Mickus as pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Chandler and Saint Louis Catholic Church in Stroud pending an investigation into an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor.

Jones said the allegation against Mickus, 74, appears to be the same one that an that archdiocesan review board investigated in 2002 and found not credible.

"Father Mickus made a statement refuting the complaint and denying the allegation," while the accuser declined the opportunity to appear before the review board to support his allegation, Jones said.

Mickus was reinstated in 2003.

Jones said Mickus filed a Garfield County defamation lawsuit against his accuser after the original allegation was made, but dismissed the lawsuit after his accuser failed to file a counterclaim pressing his allegation.

Jones said the accuser later filed an Oklahoma County lawsuit against the archdiocese and Mickus, but the district court dismissed the allegations against the archdiocese and the decision was upheld on appeal.

Republicans Lost the Suburbs      Cache   Translate Page

There’s a geographic signal to Tuesday’s congressional results that bursts through the noise: Congressional Republicans have been routed from the suburbs.

Here are some Democrats who took Republican seats on the outskirts of major cities: Sean Casten (IL-6) in the Chicago collar counties; Sharice Davids (KS-3) in the suburbs of Kansas City; Jennifer Wexton (VA-10) in the D.C. suburbs; Kendra Horn (OK-5) in the suburbs of Oklahoma City; Angie Craig (MN-2) south of the Twin Cities; Joe Cunningham (SC-1) around Charleston; Tom Malinowski (NJ-7), Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11), Max Rose (NY-11) around New York City.

Many of those were among 2016’s 25 “split districts”—GOP-represented districts that voted for Clinton, and made for obvious targets. They’ve been sliding toward Democrats for years. Others lurched left after voting for Trump in 2016. But amid various confusing patterns—the GOP winning big state races in the South; Democrats’ big victories in Michigan and Wisconsin—the trend is clear. Republicans are getting blown out of the places where once, long ago, the party found its most dedicated voters and defined its priorities.

Just look at Texas, where headlines of Beto O’Rourke’s narrow loss disguised how much he did for candidates down the ballot. Two powerful, long-serving Republicans—Houston’s John Culberson and Dallas’ Pete Sessions—were defeated by Democratic challengers. “Everybody is going down in Dallas County if they’re a Republican tonight,” Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith told MSNBC Tuesday night. Later, Pete Sessions gave a concession speech in which he explained what had happened: His conservatism had brought economic growth to Dallas (the so-called Texas Miracle, in which Sessions probably overstates his role), and he paid the price. “Unfortunately, that success was not enough to stem the liberal tide of people who have moved here from across the country.”

That might be right, in some places. Whether they’re leaving high-cost costal cities or low-growth areas in the Rust Belt, Americans keep moving to the Sun Belt. This has changed politics in places like Texas and Georgia. A quarter-million black people moved to Atlanta between 2010 and 2016, a bigger influx than anywhere in the United States. That’s part of what put Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams within striking distance on Tuesday.

That’s not all that’s happening, though. The Republican Party also went nuts, progressively alienating nearly all of its highly educated voters, culminating in the defection of the “Never Trump” Republicans, the last rats off the ship. And the suburbs changed too, as rings of white affluence became increasingly diverse, often home to pockets of poverty. The suburbs are younger now, and the family in the tract home next door is just as likely to have been priced out of the city as to have escaped it.

There’s also reason to expect suburbs everywhere to rally around a Democratic Party that rejects Trump’s reactionary, caustic politics. Things are going well there! In February, I wrote about what’s pulling American metro areas apart from the rest of the country:

Since the financial crisis, these places account for more than 93 percent of U.S. population growth, two-thirds of economic output, and 73 percent of employment gains. All those shares are growing. Those numbers fall rapidly and progressively as you look at midsize cities, small cities, and rural areas.

From the left, there was plenty of criticism for Democrats suburban gains after 2016—especially after Sen. Chuck Schumer couldn’t deliver the promised fruits of a centrist candidate: “For every blue-collar Democrat we lose in western Pennsylvania,” he said that summer, “we will pick up two moderate Republicans in the suburbs in Philadelphia, and you can repeat that in Ohio and Illinois and Wisconsin.” Needless to say it didn’t happen in 2016, and Clinton ran up the numbers in places like Orange County, California, while the party failed to make any gains in Congress. The strategy was derided as a pivot to the donor class.

This time, without any substantial ideological compromises, Democrats translated popularity into power.

The vanishing of the suburban Republican will have consequences in the House. They were federal officials, but they had powerful influence over how business got done in their home districts. John Culberson, for example, played an instrumental role in redirecting an important stretch of Houston’s light rail network away from a busy, popular street, jeopardizing the system’s long-term success.

For good or for ill, suburban Republicans also had a stake in metropolitan issues. So it was that defeated Rep. Leonard Lance, of New Jersey, was a rare Republican voice in the House advocating for support of the Gateway investment to repair critical rail infrastructure under the Hudson River. Sometimes, they dragged their party with them, or enough of it to matter, supporting programs with predominantly metropolitan impacts like the Low Income Housing Tax Credit or the TIGER grants for transportation projects.

They’ve been replaced by Democrats, of course, who should be even more likely to support policies that favor the country’s big metro areas. But if 2016 showed that metropolitan-rural divide in presidential preferences, 2018 shows that split solidifying in the legislature. That means, more than before, that urban policy is now the exclusive concern of the Democratic Party.

The LP is the group's first studio effort with guitarist/vocalist Pepper Keenan in more than a decade. "No Cross No Crown" was recorded in North Carolina with longtime producer John Custer. CORROSION OF CONFORMITY cut the disc in about forty days over the course of a year. CORROSION OF CONFORMITY guitarist Woody Weatherman told Guitar Interactive Magazine about "No Cross No Crown": "This record was approached a little differently than previous [albums]. We didn't spend a lot of… There was, like, no pre-production; we didn't have much of an idea of shit before we all showed up. It was, like, just… we showed up, [and] we'd do four- or five-day sessions." "As we were writing the songs, it started to take shape," Pepper added. "And once again, it was becoming something more than we… as a unit, it became bigger than the sum of its parts. And so once you get to that thing where it's in your head and you're consumed by it, if it ain't right, it's wrong. You've just gotta keep going at it." "There were several things that we threw in the trash," Woody continued. "We'd spend half a day on somebody's idea, and if it wasn't working after half a fucking day, throw it in the fucking trash and move to the next thing." Pepper went on to say that CORROSION OF CONFORMITY's music still sounds as valid today as it did when it was first recorded. "I think we can look back at C.O.C.'s career, you can look at [all the albums] and go… It sounds weird to say it, but they stand the test of time," he said. "And it's really important that it doesn't sound dated. I don't want it to sound like it's the new millennium or the '90s or whatever; it's gotta sound like… when you play it 20 years later, it still sounds correct." "It's been a conscious thought of ours for a long time," Woody added. "'Let's not make a record that sounds like it was made in 1991 or something. Although we're making a record in 1991, let's try not to do that. Let's make it sounds like it's…' Like Pep said, in 20 or 30 years, it still sounds relevant."

Cheat Sheet: Key Race Tracker

Wednesday, Nov 7, 2018 · 3:02:13 AM +00:00 · David Nir

Wednesday, Nov 7, 2018 · 3:09:06 AM +00:00 · David Nir

OK-05: This one is a bit crazy. Democrat Kendra Horn is edging Republican Rep. Steve Russell 50.6 to 49.4 with 78% reporting in a very red seat in Oklahoma City that polls had shown Russell holding.

The meeting at Northwest Classen High School was the second of five community meetings to gather input on the project, which McDaniel said likely will result in schools being closed or repurposed in the coming year.

About 75 people attended Tuesday's meeting, which lasted about two hours and was subdued compared to Monday night's meeting in Spencer.

Only four people other than Chief of Staff Rebecca Kaye asked the superintendent questions.

William Crum Staff Writer wcrum@oklahoman.com

The Oklahoma City Council voted Tuesday to relax zoning regulations on stores carrying adult products, heading off a potentially expensive legal battle.

The vote was 5-3.

The revision eliminates restrictions on the location of stores selling adult novelties, as long as 25 percent or less of the store's display area is designated for sale of such products.

Adult novelties must not be displayed in a way that they can be seen from outside the store.

Current regulations require any stores selling those products to be at least 1,000 feet from churches, schools, libraries, playgrounds and residential property.

Stores failing to adhere to the 25 percent limit on display space will continue to face restrictions, and are expressly forbidden from allowing anyone under 18 inside.

Those businesses will continue to be defined as "adult novelty shops.

Dead brothel owner wins election for Nevada legislative seat      Cache   Translate Page

LAS VEGAS — A Nevada brothel owner and reality TV star who died last month after fashioning himself as a Donald Trump-style Republican candidate has won a heavily GOP state legislative district.

Dennis Hof defeated Democratic educator Lesia Romanov on Tuesday in the race for Nevada's 36th Assembly District, which includes rural communities and large stretches of desert in the southern part of the state. County officials will appoint a Republican to take his place in the seat.

Hof was found dead Oct. 16 after a weekend of parties celebrating his 72nd birthday. Officials are still determining his cause of death, but they don't suspect foul play.

Hof owned a handful of brothels in Nevada, the only state that allows them to legally operate.

He also starred in the HBO adult reality series "Cathouse" and wrote a book titled "The Art of the Pimp," akin to Trump's book "The Art of the Deal."

Hof was found dead at his Love Ranch brothel about an hour outside Las Vegas. His body was discovered by porn actor Ron Jeremy and a prostitute at the brothel.

Hof had spent the four previous days partying with notables from the sex industry and political world celebrating his 72nd birthday.

The brothel where his body was found is where NBA player Lamar Odom was found unconscious in 2015.

About 20 brothels operate in Nevada, mostly in rural areas. They're banned in the counties that contain Las Vegas and Reno. The state doesn't publicize how many are open, and most owners keep a much lower profile than Hof did.

Hof ran for office in 2016 as a Libertarian but lost the race.

This year, he ran as a Republican and earned backing from Trump associate Roger Stone and tax-cut activist Grover Norquist.

He upended Nevada politics this summer when he ousted an incumbent Republican lawmaker in a primary, celebrating at an election night party with "Hollywood Madam" Heidi Fleiss.

He said an anti-brothel push and regulatory problems he faced this year were political retribution.

Nevada's 36th Assembly District has long been a Republican-held seat.

The sprawling assembly district that touches both California and Utah and includes the Nevada National Security Site where nuclear weapons were once tested.

Knicks NBA trade rumors: Will Enes Kanter want out?       Cache   Translate Page

New York Knicks center Enes Kanter is one of the most recognizable, established and talented players on a young roster that isn't expected to go anywhere during the 2018-19 season. Yet he has not been getting starts under new head coach David Fizdale.

The 26-year-old, who is fresh off a massive 23-point, 24-rebound performance on Monday night against the Chicago Bulls, has come off the bench in each of the Knicks' last six games as Fizdale has a new plan for the big man.

Fizdale is eyeing a Sixth Man of the Year award for Kanter rather than giving him regular starts. He started 71 games during his first season with the Knicks last year and 154 over the prior two seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The move obviously has not been favorably viewed by Kanter, who was benched in favor of the 20-year-old and obviously inexperienced Mitchell Robinson.

"I don't worry about [individual] trophies," Kanter said (h/t Stefan Bondy, Daily News). "My thing is we promised this city the playoffs."

In all fairness, that promise most likely is not going to be met this season as the Knicks are poised for yet another season of mediocrity in a weak Eastern Conference whether he was starting or not.

Coming off the bench hasn't necessarily hurt Kanter's numbers, he is averaging 27 minutes per game (up from 25.8 last year) and posting 15.3 points and 11.7 rebounds through 11 tilts. Should he maintain those numbers throughout the year, it would be one of his finest seasons as a pro.

However, being considered a role player now on a non-contender would bruise the ego of any player that was once regularly a starter while entering the prime of his career. Not only that, but it will likely call into question Kanter's standing with the team after this season.

The Knicks are on the cusp of major changes with two max-salary roster slots leaving the door open for big-time stars to take their talents to Madison Square Garden. As they will be added to a roster that is going to be built around Kristaps Porzingis and Kevin Knox, it wouldn't be unfathomable if Kanter saw some kind of proverbial writing on the wall and asked for a way out.

Would Enes Kanter ask for a trade?

In all likelihood, it would be far-fetched to assume that Kanter would want to push his way out of New York. He is often vocal of his love for the city and has made countless promises to Knicks fans that he will help turn things around.

Then it boils down to whether the Knicks want to keep him in their future plans. His contract expires at the end of this season and should the Knicks believe a prospective contract will throw a wrench in their plans of pursuing big stars, not only might they not retain him, but they could look to deal him.

Kanter's name surfaced in trade talks last year around the league's Feb. 8 trade deadline as there was some interest from teams around the league.

Cleveland Cavaliers throw away chance at much-needed win, lose to Magic 102-100: Chris Fedor's instant analysis      Cache   Translate Page

For the most part, Drew pushed that objective to the side on Monday night. He wanted to leave Orlando with a victory so he tried to ride a few of his veterans to the finish line. Only they couldn't close it out.

ORLANDO -- After a furious second-half comeback, with plenty of key plays in critical moments and a brilliant third quarter, the Cleveland Cavaliers threw away their chance at a much-needed win in the closing seconds.

Literally.

Cedi Osman, Kyle Korver and George Hill all made costly mistakes late, leading to a crushing 102-100 loss against the Orlando Magic.

Following JR Smith's clutch 3-pointer with 41.9 seconds to put the Cavs up by five points, what seemed to be the dagger, with Smith validating head coach Larry Drew sticking with him, the Cavs were outscored 7-0 the rest of the way and left Orlando feeling like they squandered a win.

The biggest blunder came from Osman.

With the shot clock off and Cleveland clinging to a three-point lead, Osman turned the ball over. All he had to do was hold on and wait for the Magic to foul him. Make one free throw and it's once again a two-possession game.

Instead, Osman made the play he couldn't, trying to snap a pass into traffic, which gave the Magic life.

Then came an inbounds pass to Korver that was swatted out of his hands. Another turnover.

Korver and the Cavs protested that he was fouled on the play, but to no avail. That miscue led to another Magic tally, as Evan Fournier hit a free throw to tie the game.

The Cavs had another crack at it. They were in the driver's seat still. A missed shot and it goes to overtime. A made basket and it's a victory.

But Hill attacked early, used a Tristan Thompson screen and tried forcing a shot that was blocked by starting center Nikola Vucevic. With 1.8 seconds remaining, the officials overturned the call on the floor, said it touched Hill last and Orlando got the final possession.

The Magic made it count.

Fournier hit the game-winning shot from the top of the key following Osman's overplay -- another untimely error.

Drew said early Monday morning that mistakes are bound to happen, especially with a young team. The goal is to learn from them. To not make the same ones repeatedly.

With a win in their clutches, that proved prophetic.

That late-game collapse put a damper on a night the Cavaliers fought, the kind of competitiveness players have been demanding from one another. It put a damper what could have been a chance for the chaotic Cavs to steady themselves following a tumultuous first month.

Thompson recorded season-highs in points (19) and rebounds (16). He took it upon himself as one of the vets to lead by example. But he also missed a pair of free throws at the 3:39 mark of the fourth quarter.

Hill scored a season-best 22 points on 10-of-12 from the field, hitting a few important baskets in the fourth quarter. But the one he missed, the one that was blocked off him, was the most decisive.

Jordan Clarkson came off the bench for 14 points. But he got in the way of that Osman pass intended for Hill and deflected it to D.J. Augustin before tackling him to the ground and sending him to the stripe.

Smith added 14 as well.

This season is partially about player development. One of the primary goals is to get Larry Nance Jr., Collin Sexton, Osman and other youngsters meaningful minutes in pressure-packed situations, hoping they can grow in that kind of competitive environment, experience that firsthand.

For the most part, Drew pushed that objective to the side on Monday night. He wanted to leave Orlando with a victory, understanding the importance. That's why Drew tried to ride a few of his veterans to the finish line. It looked like the right call, Drew putting his mark on the second win of the season.

Only the old guard couldn't close it out.

Call it another teaching moment, especially for Osman. A lesson on what not to do at the end of a game.

From here, the hope for the Cavs is that Osman learns from it. And next time he's in that same situation, he will make a different decision.

Third-quarter burst

The Cavaliers walked off the floor looking frustrated after a terrible end to the first half. But they quickly turned it around in the third quarter, outscoring the Magic by 20 points and taking a nine-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Cleveland used its feisty defense to spark the comeback, holding the Magic to 12 points in the quarter.

The Cavs also stopped making careless mistakes on the offensive end, which led to a much better defensive effort. Their shoddy offensive possessions have taken a toll on the defense at times, making the numbers look even worse.

After committing eight turnovers in the first half, the Cavs had just three in the quarter. That limited Orlando's transition opportunities as well, holding the Magic to three fastbreak points in the quarter.

Dekker goes down

Sam Dekker, starting in place of the injured Kevin Love, hobbled off the court early in the third quarter after suffering a left ankle injury. Dekker was helped back to the locker room, unable to put any weight on his foot and was quickly ruled out for the rest of the night.

From a depth perspective, this is one injury the Cavs can't afford. They are already thin in the frontcourt, forced to use Osman, Smith and even Korver for stretches in Love's absence. If Dekker misses any time, the Cavs won't have any healthy 4s.

Up next

The Cavaliers return home to play the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night.

Are Today’s Leaders Ready For The Millennial Culture Shake-Up?      Cache   Translate Page
Millennials are most satisfied when they have a voice and when they know their voice has merit.

Millennials are shaking up some established work norms, and leaders should be ready to change. By 2018, the Millennial generation is expected to comprise 50 percent or more of the U.S. labor force. One study (Cabrera, 2015) shows that 45 percent of companies report higher turnover rates among Millennials, who will stay with their employers for an average of three years. These demographic trends have major implications for organizations and the leaders who run them. Organizations must shape and sustain a culture that attracts, engages, and successfully interacts with the Millennial population.

Millennials are less inclined to stay in a job or with an organization where they are dissatisfied. According to one study (Smith and Turner, 2015), Millennials want to work in a culture that:

  • Encourages voice, work-life balance, and flexibility
  • Develops leadership skills
  • Offers mentoring support
  • Demonstrates core values aligned with their own

Organizations that can successfully shape and sustain a collaborative Culture of Voice will have the highest likelihood of retaining and engaging Millennials. This demographic is less encumbered by the trappings of material possessions that appealed to previous generations. Millennials don’t need an unsatisfactory job just to make the car or mortgage payment because they can easily take Uber or rent an apartment.

A recent Northern Arizona University study showed Millennials are rejecting some of the work norms established by previous generations such as extreme work hours (Campione, 2015). According to the study, “anything they perceive as unfair, unreasonable, or unmanageable will cause them to leave” (p. 70). A 2016 Gallup poll reported $30.5 billion is lost to Millennial turnover costs every year, considering the cost of recruitment, evaluation, interviewing, onboarding, training, and lost productivity. These costs are unsustainable, and leaders must begin to understand how to motivate and engage this population. Leaders also must understand the Millennial mindset, worldview, and satisfaction drivers if they are to successfully attract, engage, and retain them.

HOW HISTORY SHAPED THE MILLENNIAL MINDSET

The Millennial generation is the most educated, technologically sophisticated generation ever tracked. Millennials have seen unprecedented events such as the Oklahoma City bombing; the Columbine High School massacre; and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Being exposed to such fear and lack of security led Millennials to value job satisfaction, security, quality of life, and opportunity for advancement as priorities over financial compensation. They are less concerned about saving money or purchasing a car or a large home as previous generations, as their focus is on experiencing life in the moment.

Millennials do not remember a time without mobile devices and the Internet. They tend to value confidence, optimism, civic duty, morality, street smarts, diversity, and technology. They are comfortable using multiple types of technology in the workplace and are good at multitasking, listening to music, texting or “whatsApping” on their smartphones, while simultaneously getting their work done. They tend to consider e-mail and electronic communication to be more efficient; therefore, they prefer texting a colleague versus having a verbal or face-to-face conversation at work. Baby Boomer and Gen X managers tend to prefer verbal and face-to-face interaction to electronic communication, thereby experiencing dissonance with Millennial-preferred interaction norms.

WHAT MILLENNIALS EXPECT FROM WORK TODAY

Millennials want visionary leaders and full transparency. They want clear expectations for their job responsibilities, duties, and how their performance is evaluated and a clear understanding of how their job fits into the organization’s mission and core values. Moreover, Millennials want to feel like they are part of something bigger. They want to know how to move forward in the organization, which includes discussing and acquiring the skills, training, experience, and qualification for higher-level positions.

Millennials expect mentorship, coaching, training, and development opportunities at work, and they want to enjoy what they do, so they often look for opportunities to align their work with their interests. They want to understand the “why” of the tasks they do and how it relates to the bigger picture of the company, as well as how the work they do has an impact on society as a whole.

WHAT EVERY MANAGER MUST DO

Some common and erroneous stereotypes held about Millennials include tendencies of self-interest, entitlement, disloyalty, and overconfidence (Myers and Sadaghiani, 2010). You can find employees who are selfish, entitled, disloyal, and overconfident in any generation, so this is not generation specific.

Outside of being aware of and controlling for naïve attribution and stereotypes, managers must be equipped to motivate Millennials, and there are several practices that are important to master soon.

Our advice is to acknowledge and legitimize your Millennial employees’ values and priorities. There is one best way to find out: ASK them! If you are not used to this type of interaction, you may want to brush up on your interpersonal competencies.

Research shows Millennials have several distinct characteristics relative to previous generations. Most notably are these three:

1. 66 percent of Millennials agree that “they expect to have interaction with their supervisors” (Hershatter and Epstein, 2010).

2. Millennials’ parents often are older because they waited longer to have children. The parents are also typically well educated, and they interacted with their children more than in previous generations (Howe & Strauss, 2000).

3. 58 percent of Millennials are comfortable asking their boss for help when they need it (Hershatter and Epstein, 2010).

The next generation of performance reviews is off and running. IBM, Adobe, Deloitte, Cargill, and GE are moving from the annual review process to a quarterly preview process focused on opportunity for growth and upgrades, versus a review of what went well and not so well in the past. A Cornell University study revealed that Cargill showed a 9 percent increase in personal value perception among the employee population, and Adobe reported a 25 percent reduction in voluntary turnover (Park and Zhou, 2013). At Cargill, 38 percent of employees reported improved conversation quality with their managers.

SHAPING A CULTURE OF VOICE

Managers can shape a Culture of Voice by encouraging voice and interaction. Here are a few practices that most likely will encourage voice:

1. Build up ideas and never tear them down, even if they seem half-baked.

2. Strengthen your tolerance for divergent thinking. Look for and encourage different viewpoints at every opportunity.

Minimize the silence phenomenon by doing these things:

1. Never put down ideas or suggestions in public.

2. Never ignore an employee’s ideas or recommendations. They may not seem significant to you, but they are most likely important to the employee.

3. Pay close attention to even the slightest nonverbal language that sends the message, “That is ridiculous.”

Shaping Cultures of Voice is every manager’s daily work. It is easy to create a Culture of Silence and difficult to unwind it. Millennials are most satisfied when they have a voice and when they know their voice has merit. HR policies must become flexible and tasks meaningful for Millennials. Get to know your employees and what makes them tick. It’s OK to get it wrong; Millennials are not shy and are more likely than previous generations to let you know when they are dissatisfied. Be aware of your every action and inaction, because it has consequences not only for the Millennial but for all your employees.

Benjamin Wallace-Wells in The New Yorker on what wins:

"Each of the three candidates in whom progressives had vested their deepest hopes—Beto O’Rourke, in Texas, Stacey Abrams, in Georgia, and Gillum—now have lost or seem likely to. The story of these races has been told mostly from the Democratic side, as an account of historic candidacies and changing states. But there is a pattern uniting the Republicans who beat them, too. Like DeSantis, Senator Ted Cruz, of Texas, and Brian Kemp, the Republican candidate for governor of Georgia, made themselves into extensions of Trump’s politics. The Republican losses in the House have been concentrated in suburbs, where many voters have expressed horror at Trump, and where the candidates have often been among the Party’s remaining moderates. For other Republicans, the message is clear, if it wasn’t after 2016: Trump’s divisiveness and demagoguery are not characteristics to recoil from. For Republicans, they are what wins."

Read the article here.

Frans Timmermans, lead candidate for European socialists, wrote on Twitter: "Inspired by voters in the US who chose hope over fear, civility over rudeness, inclusion over racism, equality over discrimination. They stood up for their values. And so will we."

Yes, I know the popular vote, but since it's unlikely that the system will change anytime soon you have to operate within the system. If this is the result after two years of Trump there are plenty of reasons to be disappointed.

And as the short article of Mr. Wallace-Wells makes clear: the message of hate is more alive than ever since 1945, except for some suburbs and quite a few big cities including Oklahoma City. The future may belong to Oklahoma City, at least my future.

By the numbers: Of those 27 House seats, 13 went for Clinton and 15 went for Trump. Of the Trump 14, he won 6 of them by more than 5 points. We profile them below.

High Schoolers Host Governor's Debate      Cache   Translate Page
High school students in Oklahoma have organized and moderated a gubernatorial debate in hopes of getting other students interested in politics. Democratic candidate Drew Edmondson and his Republican opponent Kevin Stitt answered students' questions Thursday at Oklahoma City Community College. Three high school students moderated the panel and asked the candidates about health care, education, prison reform, medical cannabis and the economy. The forum was run by a group called "From Now On," which was recently launched by Democratic Rep. Jason Dunnington of Oklahoma City and Republican Sen. Adam Pugh of Edmond. The nonprofit organization aims to encourage young people to vote. "When I heard Oklahoma is 47th in voting turnout, that is shocking to me," said Madelyn Rops, a student at Edmond Memorial High School. "Hearing that only 11 percent of eligible voters from 18 to 24 actually come out and vote is just not good. That's not how I think we should be as a state. For me personally, I

West says about a dozen law officers joined the chase at speeds of 100 miles per hour. West said the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.

ElectionPolitics, Election, Politics

Anyone who thought a big blue wave would fix everything in an instant doesn't understand the history of this nation.

PoliticsSHARICE DAVIDSAmanda Kerri

Today, you’re going to see a lot of pundits and "very deep" on Twitter types tell you that this election was a complete disaster for Democrats and that doom is about to rain down upon all of our cursed heads. I want you to look that person in the eye and then kick them in the ding-a-ling.

Somewhere along the way political punditry figured out that “Democrats in disarray” is a take that is forever renewed with the rising of the morning sun and also pays really well — it’s something editors love to run because it draws eyes and reactions. This election should be etched into everyone’s brain that those predictions of miraculous overwhelming victories only happen in Star Wars movies when they blow up Death Stars, and those unimaginably horrific defeats only happen in Star Wars movies where they don’t.

No, liberals and progressives didn’t win the Senate, but no one really predicted them to. I know everyone thought that Beto O’Rourke was the second coming of Jesus and Kennedy, but he was running in a deep red state. The last guy to lose there lost by more than a 16 percent difference, but Beto closed it to less than 3 percent. Sure, we all wanted him to win, especially all the media outlets who all told us this was the race to follow, but he didn’t. However, now we got ourselves everyone’s favorite new dream candidate for 2020 so I guess that balances out?

Meanwhile, we actually won back the House of Representatives. In order to do that we actually had to flip districts. Here in my own state of Oklahoma, we had a woman, Kendra Horn, flip a district that’s been red since 1975. Nearly half a century of Republican control there ended with her win. And with the big victory in Congress comes all sorts of fun stuff, like the fact that the House has already said they kind of want to see Trump’s tax returns, which we know is going to go over great with him.

Additionally, there were actually a lot of massive victories for LGBTQ people. Massachusetts by a huge margin passed a referendum to keep the law that banned discrimination on gender identity. Colorado elected the first openly gay governor in American history, and Kansas voted for Sharice Davids (pictured), a queer native American woman, to Congress. Additionally, there were a large number of LGBTQ candidates elected to state and local offices all over the country. Yes, quite a few were defeated, but so were some outspoken anti-LGBTQ people like frump queen and homophobic county clerk Kim Davis, as well as Wisconsin governor Scott Walker.

Let’s be real here, this was not going to be a super amazing victory. They’re never super amazing victories. The huge wins in politics are usually once in a decade or more and most of the time they swing back and forth within a moderate window. Yes, some of these losses are heartbreaking and frustrating, but that’s the fucking game.

If all it took was really hoping for a victory to get a victory we would all have literal participation trophies. Making real, lasting change is hard. I know that watching some of these bigotted trash goblins like Steve King in Iowa get reelected, or idiot crooks likes Brian Kemp in Georgia win, makes you think that it’s impossible to ever change people’s minds or make this world better, but let me remind you that not even a decade ago you couldn't get "gay" married in most of this country. Stacey Abrams ran as the first black woman to represent a major party in Georgia, something that honestly you wouldn’t have seen just 20 years ago in that state. Georgia is the state that has Robert E. Lee chiseled into the side of a mountain that the KKK used to hold rallies on as a huge state park. And she still could win if it turns out Kemp rigged the election or if more ballots come in.

I know it may seem incredulous to us that anyone could still vote for Trumpist goons and bigots in this day and age but we know they do. We know they do it all the time. Hell, the majority of history in this country that isn’t about wars is about overcoming idiots and bigots to make things better for everyone. We’ve got a 250-year history of it and we’re not even close to being done.

You’re not going to win each and every election and make change each and every time you want it. It’s not that easy. It’s never been that easy. People who tell you it’s that easy are idiots. When they tell you that because everything isn’t fixed after one election, everything is doomed, or that politicians are all idiots or crooks, they’re trying to sell you on their own agenda and it’s usually centered around listening to them or putting them in charge. There are going to be those folks who are going to take a huge dump over entire parts of the country for not voting how they wanted when some of these races were far closer than they have been in years or even decades. Screw those folks.

It’s been 50 years since Stonewall and while we have the right to marry, we still don’t have national job protections or freedom from discrimination by federal law. And what rights we've attained are being pushed back. But we do have rights that we've fought for over decades of grinding and toil.

Setbacks and attacks are always frightening and stressful, but not winning everything in one shot isn’t a defeat. Change is a grind, a never-ending task that takes years, if not decades to achieve. It shouldn’t be like that, but it is. That’s the way it’s always been because what we consider equal and fair is always changing. This is just the beginning of winning things back and setting them on the right course. Don’t listen to the naysayers or shit-talkers. They’re either already set, trying to sell you something, or too lazy to fight anyway.
