VOX
READ BY JULIA WHELAN
BY CHRISTINA DALCHER

ABOUT THE BOOK:
On the day the government decrees that women are no longer allowed more than one hundred words per day, Dr. Jean McClellan is in denial. This can’t happen here. Not in America. Not to her.

This is just the beginning…

Soon women are not permitted to hold jobs. Girls are not taught to read or write. Females no longer have a voice. Before, the average person spoke sixteen thousand words each day, but now women have only one hundred to make themselves heard.

…not the end.

For herself, her daughter, and every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Christina Dalcher earned her doctorate in theoretical linguistics from Georgetown University. She specializes in the phonetics of sound change in Italian and British dialects and has taught at several universities.

Her short stories and flash fiction appear in more than one hundred journals worldwide. Recognition includes the Bath Flash Award short list, nominations for the Pushcart Prize, and multiple other awards. She lives in Norfolk, Virginia, with her husband. Photo: © B Dalcher

PRAISE FOR VOX:
“Christina Dalcher’s debut novel, set in a recognizable near future and sure to beg comparisons to Margaret Atwood’s dystopian The Handmaid’s Tale, asks: if the number of words you could speak each day was suddenly and severely limited, what would you do to be heard? A novel ripe for the era of #MeToo, VOX (Berkley) presents an exaggerated scenario of women lacking a voice: in the United States, they are subject to a hundred-word limit per day (on average, a human utters about 16,000). Considering the threat of a society in which children like the protagonist’s six-year-old daughter are deprived of language, VOX highlights the urgency of movements like #MeToo, but also of the basic importance of language.”—Vanity Fair

“The females in Dalcher’s electrifying debut are permitted to speak just 100 words a day—and that’s especially difficult for the novel’s protagonist, Jean, a neurolinguist. A futurist thriller that feels uncomfortably plausible.”—O, Oprah Magazine

“In Christina Dalcher’s Vox, women are only allowed to speak 100 words a day. Sounds pretty sci-fi, but the real-life parallels will make you shiver.”—Cosmpolitan

“Vox is a real page-turner that will appeal to people with big imaginations.”—Refinery29

“Fittingly, this book about women being silenced has got everybody talking and calling it The Handmaid’s Tale for 2018.”—Bustle

“VOX is intelligent, suspenseful, provocative, and intensely disturbing—everything a great novel should be.”—Lee Child, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Chilling and gripping—a real page-turner.”—Karen Cleveland, New York Times bestselling author of Need to Know

Jeremiah Hurst Adds His Name To The List Of All Iowa Points Late Model Champions      Cache   Translate Page
In the fifty-second season of compiling the All Iowa Points Jeremiah Hurst becomes the twenty-third different driver to earn the title of Late Model champion. The list of champions includes ten National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame members Red Droste, Verlin Eaker, Ed Sanger, Curt Hansen, Gary Webb, Tom Hearst, Ken Walton, Roger Dolan,  Ray Guss Jr. and Joe Kosiski, and if not for health reasons Hurst might have been an All Iowa champion a few years earlier as he was the point leader mid-season before having to step away from the sport for a bit.

Teaming up with the Roberts Racing Team car #58, a team that won four straight All Iowa Points titles with Ray Guss Jr. from 2009 through 2012, Hurst had a stellar 2018 season taking seven feature wins and finishing in the top five an impressive forty-two times. Seventeen of those were runner-up finishes allowing him to edge out the defending champion Matt Ryan by eighteen points. It was another great year for Ryan with eleven feature victories in thirty-seven top five runs.

Three time All Iowa Points Modified champion Ryan Dolan (2010 - 2012) had his best season in a Late Model finishing in the third position with ten wins to his credit while early season leader Andy Nezworski ranked fourth taking nine feature wins. Todd Cooney who is still chasing his first AIP title despite having the most points accumulated in the division since the 2000 season rounds out the top five with eleven wins this year. Four time champion Rob Toland (2004, 2006-07, 2016) finished tenth.

The "Newcomer of the Year", or the driver who has never had a top five finish in the division until 2018 is Mike Mills who raced in the 9:1 Late Model division in Dubuque this season. Mills was tied for the 53rd position on the list.

We will continue to release the final 2018 All Iowa Points by division as this week goes on with the Modifieds up next.

Michigan 63, Norfolk State 44 Alex Cook November 6th, 2018 at 11:12 PM
[Marc-Gregor Campredon]

In John Beilein's 800th career win, his Michigan team leaned on its defense and suffocated Norfolk State from the beginning en route to a comfortable, if ugly, 63-44 win. It took the Spartans (Not Those Spartans) over seven minutes to score their first points, which came on an unintentionally banked-in long two after Michigan had eased its way to an 11-0 lead. For most of the first half, the Wolverine defense was nearly impeccable, holding Norfolk State to just 0.37 points per possession and affording a misfiring Michigan offense a large margin of error.

Jon Teske was the standout for UM: not only did he lead the team in scoring (with 13 points) and rebounding (with 8, which was tied with Isaiah Livers), his defense in the paint was outstanding, as the 4 blocks he logged in the stat sheet is an insufficient record of how many shots he altered around the rim. After a swat as the help defender midway through the second half, BTN announcer Shon Morris remarked that he was "almost not fair," and it was hard to shake that feeling as he completely smothered any and every Norfolk State drive in his vicinity. Michigan's team will look quite different with Teske replacing Moe Wagner as the starting center, but early returns indicate that an already outstanding Michigan defense will be even more formidable with the surprisingly quick giant deterring opponents and swallowing up their shot attempts.

The wings mostly had rougher season debuts, and were the principal cause of Michigan's offensive troubles. Jordan Poole didn't hit a shot from the field, though he did have a few nice assists early on in the game before Norfolk State switched to its mix of zone defenses; Charles Matthews was active on the offensive glass and chipped in 12 points, but missed all four of his mostly wide open three-point attempts and - more worryingly - all five free throws; Ignas Brazdeikis had a rough first half in his first college game (featuring a rushed, contested two that was blocked after he'd conceded a layup, an airballed three, and a charge in transition) before making a few nice plays in the second. Livers, who played more minutes off the bench than the freshman did, had a nice game: protecting the rim, generating a few extra possessions on the boards, dishing out a few nice assists - including a drive and no-look dish to Brazdeikis for a dunk - and hitting a variety of shots.

That Michigan scored just 0.91 points per possession and still managed to win very comfortably speaks to how utterly overwhelmed Norfolk State was by what could be one of the best defenses in the country. The Wolverines did a good job of moving the ball against the zone and avoided turnovers for the most part (at least until late in the game, deep into garbage time), but just couldn't hit shots: 16/34 on twos (47%) against an undersized opponent and 6/26 on threes (23%). More worryingly, free throws were an issue even aside from Matthews, as Michigan hit just 13-29 of its free throws as a team (45%).

It didn't matter though. Even if most of Michigan's rotation was having an off night on the offensive end, their work on defense made those struggles irrelevant. The three guards, Zavier Simpson, Poole, and Eli Brooks (who played well on offense, hitting two threes and notching four assists to zero turnovers) were disruptive - forcing more turnovers than they were credited with in the box score - and did well to stay in front of Norfolk State's perimeter players. Most of the rare baskets they conceded came on tough shots, including multiple contested step-back twos. That first Spartan bucket was illustrative of simply how hard it was for them to score, as was their first made three, a turnaround deep buzzer-beater in the second half. In the end, Norfolk State scored 0.64 points per possession, a number that was better than all but two of the defensive performances over Michigan's 41 games last season.

Before the last five minutes of the game, when Beilein subbed out Teske for good and put in freshman big Brandon Johns, he went with a tight, eight-man rotation: the same starters as the exhibition (Simpson, Poole, Matthews, Brazdeikis, and Teske), the sixth man, Livers, third guard Brooks, and backup big man Austin Davis, who was active around the basket on the offensive end. By the end, all five freshmen had played, and the Wolverines closed with a lineup of David DeJulius, Adrien Nunez, walk-on CJ Baird, Johns, and Colin Castleton - so there will be no redshirts this season.

Once Michigan's strength of schedule ramps up, it's unlikely that opponents will look so hapless on offense, but it's clear that this team has a ton of potential on the defensive end of the floor - and that starts with Teske, who looked outstanding against an overmatched Norfolk State team, and Simpson, who disrupted plenty of possessions tonight. Michigan's shooting struggles may or may not portend a rough year in that regard (it's far too early to tell) but their defense may rack up plenty of wins either way.

Teske was the defensive MVP of the team. He has altered and blocked so many times that Norfolk pretty much stopped attacking the rim when he's on court. He showed good things on offense and can unlock some things for them once opposing bigs start respecting his jumper.

Austin Davis was solid and clearly is in the main rotation as a backup C while Johns and Castleton are developing. Castleton looked like a freshman on the court and it will take longer for him to develop to catch up.

I'm impressed by the defense overall sans a few moments where there's a breakdown but those are rare. They're going to need them as they figure out the offense. They lost a lot of production and shooting from Moe, MAAR and Duncan.

Norfolk, VA (WTKR) — A Facebook video is being investigated by Norfolk Police after they got a call for service Monday night at the Walmart Neighborhood Market on East Princess Anne.

Eli Brooks looked good. Teske is a player. Poole had some nice passes. And most importantly, the D is still a strength.

Beyond that? Ugly, with embarrassing free throw shooting and weak 3pt shooting. And the less said about the freshmen, the better.

Beilein will coach them up, but he has a lot to do.

I wasn't able to watch much but Livers looked excellent in the few minutes (for 5 min or so of the second half) I saw.  Back-to-back plays in which he drove and dished as mentioned here and then the next play ran the break for another assist.  May have been the opponent, but he looks aggressive and comfortable with the ball in his hands as compared to last year.

Not too worried about the shooting overall, other than Matthews FTs. Woof man.

The 3 pt struggles came mostly from the two guys I would expect to be the best on the team in Poole and Iggy.  So that isn't going to be a regular thing from them.

Impressive that Teske was able to go 27 minutes and block 4 shots with only 3 fouls. He may play more than anyone expected this season.

Biggest concern is this team scoring against zones.  We'll regularly be putting three guys out there that can't shoot (as opposed to two guys last year) and that makes beating a zone more difficult.  Eli Brooks might be the key there.  If he can spell Z some when opponents are going zone, it would get three shooters back on the floor.

I would also expect to see more Iggy at the 3 and Livers at the 4 against zones.

This team will be very good once again.

Michigan Wolverines Looking to Challenge for Big Ten Bragging Rights      Cache   Translate Page

Michigan Wolverines

It has been seven months since the Michigan Wolverines got blown off the court in the National Championship Game against Villanova. For the past two seasons, the Wolverines have secured the Big Ten Conference and have proven to be tough outs in the March Madness. While the team has lost some players, Wolverines Coach John Beilein believes his squad can compete for another Big Ten championship.

"It's going to be a dogfight all year long," said Beilein. "I think the league is as balanced as it's ever been, maybe more than it's ever been. It's going to lead to a lot of excitement all across Big Ten country and around the country as well."

Players Exiting Presents Opportunity for Michigan Additions To Make Impact

Michigan is losing the heartbeat of their offense this season in Mo Wagner. Last season, Wagner generated 14.6 points per game on 39.4 percent three-point shooting, with 7.1 rebounds per game. He started nearly every game last year and was a consistent offensive threat on the pick and pop.

"Michigan will always be this place where, if you work hard enough, and you work together enough-- you can become your best self," stated Wagner upon his departure to the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round.

Michigan's two powerful defenders, Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman and Duncan Robinson, will also be missed this season. Abdur-Rahkman recorded 12.9 points a game and generated shutdown defense on opposing guards. Robinson averaged 9.2 points per game on 38.1 percent shooting, becoming a powerful defender over the course of the season.

While these losses will take a toll on Michigan's defense, which was number three in adjusted defensive efficiency, it presents the opportunity for the new acquisitions to fill the void and make an instant impact. Freshman forward Ignas Brazdeikis from Canada led scoring last summer in Spain, showcasing his athletic playmaking skills and terrific shooting stroke. David DeJulius is ready to be a threat at the point guard position, showcasing his stellar ball control and shooting abilities. And don't forget about Colin Castleton, who at 6-foot-11 could evolve into a potential Mo Wagner successor. With the youth on this team, Beilein believes that Michigan can contend not just in the present but in the future.

"Guys want to learn, they want to get better," Beilein said of his team. "We should have some solid depth, even if it's young. That makes you want to go to that gym every day when you know you're going into an environment that is really positive."

Michigan Will Continue to Maintain Defensive Identity

The Big Ten will once again be a very competitive conference. Michigan State is projected to be the top-rated Big Ten school heading into the season. Spartans coach Tom Izzo has three returning players who averaged double-digit scoring last season. The Indiana Hoosiers have senior forward Juwan Morgan returning, who averaged 16.5 points per game last season and will add offensive depth to this team.

Michigan will look to rely on its stout defensive identity as a recipe for another successful season. The Wolverines don't give up a lot of three-point opportunities and are one of the best teams in the country preventing opposing teams from scoring on the transition. For Beilein, he has emphasized the importance of his offensive stars learning to become two-way players. Sophomore guard Jordan Poole has put in extra work this offseason to become a defensive threat, limiting his mistakes on that side of the ball from last season. Brazdeikis, who is a sharpshooter, is spending a lot of time working with coaches on defense. It is clear that the Michigan coaches are going to be holding their players accountable early in the season, making sure they maintain a strong defense.

“Defense is probably the most important part of basketball, I feel like,” Brazdeikis says, “so I definitely embrace what the coaches are doing.”

Michigan has made the National Championship Game in two of the last five seasons. But both times, they came away with disappointing losses. As the season opens against Norfolk State, the Wolverines should not be taken lightly. They are a well-coached machine who will look to wear teams down with defense, mixed in with some efficient scoring.

"We have to adopt again," says Beilein. "I love embracing change, trying to change your team both offensively and defensively what can work. I think we have a chance to be a good defensive team again, but I think offensively we're a work in progress."

Moving Norfolk County’s hazelnut industry forward      Cache   Translate Page
Norfolk County’s hazelnut industry is deepening its roots, thanks to the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. The Ontario Hazelnut Association (OHA) secured funding for an administrative co-ordinator, its first paid staff position, through the Partnership, a Monday Agricultural Adaptation Council release said. The coordinator will support the organization’s operations and activities, encourage membership and sponsorship, and develop educational resources about hazelnut production, processing and marketing. Estimates peg the demand for hazelnuts to be over 45,000 acres. This demand could generate over $300 million annually in sales and could contribute to an economic impact exceeding $1 billion. Continued research in varietal trials and related subjects are expected to continue at the Simcoe Research Station in Norfolk County through the University of Guelph. To date, the OHA has depended on volunteers. “There are currently no paid positions, and all the board members volunteer their time,” said Eric Beriault, chair of the OHA. “Adding a paid position allows us to work towards the goals of the industry a lot quicker. As a board, we represent our members, and we have established a number of initiatives that we want to move forward with. Having someone working full time, coordinating the different committees, will allow us to accomplish our goals.” Ferrero Inc.’s plant opening in Brantford over a decade ago introduced the industry to the province. The plant announced its interest in using local hazelnuts in its Nutella spread and Ferrero Rocher chocolates, launching the development of best management practices and cultivars resistant to Eastern Filbert Blight in Ontario. “Presently, the vast majority of the hazelnuts that are consumed and processed in Ontario are imported. Our long-term goal is to replace the import market with local product,” said Beriault.
