Toronto is getting a Newfoundland themed store      Cache   Translate Page

Where you want bibimbap, borsch or bannock with bison, there's no shortage of authentic regional cuisine in multicultural Toronto.

Few neighbourhoods exemplify this fact better than Parkdale, where side-by-side, lined up along Queen Street West, you'll find spots specializing in food from Tibet, Japan, Poland, Mexico, India, Nepal, Greece, The Phillipines, Italy, France, French Polynesia, North Africa and now, Newfoundland.

Craig Pike, the East Coast actor-turned-entrepreneur behind Craig's Cookies, is expanding his footprint in Toronto with the creation of another business in Parkdale.

"We busted a hole in the wall to extend our kitchen in the back, and out front is a Newfoundland store!" he said of his new venture by email.

Located directly beside Craig's Cookies at 1537 Queen, the shop is called "NEWFOUNDLAND" — and it's exactly what it sounds like: a place to buy goods imported from Newfoundland and Labrador.

Think caramel logs, naval salt beef, 'Jam Jam' cookies and lots of the spice savoury.

Pike isn't the first person to have this idea in Ontario (apparently, there's some demand here for pickled pork scrunchions and pineapple crush) but his new store will be a unique addition to Toronto's food scene.

An opening date has yet to be announced, but things are coming along fast based on the store's Instagram profile — and customers are rabid for a taste of the Rock.

"Gonna have to learn how to make jiggs dinner for my roommates now!" commented one person on a picture of beef in a tub. "Pot liquor for DAYS b'y," wrote someone else.

I don't know what most of the comments mean, but there are tons of them — which usually means the shop will be poppin'.

Bagaimana ya caranya supaya tetap menjaga akidah tanpa mengorbankan kesenangan perjalanan?

Eits, tenang saja. Chiki Fawzi punya tips bagaimana menyiasati makanan di negara-negara minoritas muslim. "Betul makannya mesti hari-hati. Aku sendiri kalau nggak sayur ya cari seafood. Ikan-ikanan aman lah ya," tuturnya saat dijumpai usia mengisi acara di Indonesia Halal Expo (Indhex) 2018, Kamis, 1 November 2018.

"Ayam kan kita juga nggak tahu bagaimana dipotongnya. Nanti tahu-tahunya pakai mesin.

Terus yang jual bilang, 'Don't touch that! It's pig skin'. Aku terharu sih mereka sebegitu menjaga aku," kata Chiki Fawzi.

You get what you pay for: Schooling incentives and child labor      Cache   Translate Page
You get what you pay for: Schooling incentives and child labor Edmonds, Eric V.; Shrestha, Maheshwor Can schooling promotion deter child participation in hazardous forms of child labor? We examine two interventions intended to promote schooling and deter child labor for children associated with carpet factories in Kathmandu. The first intervention provides scholarships for school-related expenses. The second provides the scholarship and an in-kind stipend conditional on school attendance. Paying for schooling expenses promotes schooling but only at the beginning of the school year when most schooling expenses occur. The scholarship combined with the conditional stipend increases school attendance rates by 11%, decreases grade failure rates by 46%, and reduces carpet weaving by 48%. Financial support lasted one year. Effects on schooling and weaving do not persist past the year of support. “You get what you pay for” when schooling incentives are used to combat hazardous child labor. Teorija un prakse. :chaw:

Viena kundze. :gsmile:

Kohreinas kundze stāvēja pie sava nelaiķa vīra zārka. Viņai blakus stāvēja viņu dēls. Viens aiz otra garām gāja sērojošie, lai atvadītos no aizgājēja.

– Viņam vairs nesāp, – teica Krojas kundze. – No kā viņš nomira?

– Nabadziņš, – teica Kohreinas kundze, – viņš nomira no gonorejas!

Cita sieviete cieši lūkojās uz līķi:

– Viņam jau vairs nav nekādu raižu, viņa sejā ir miers, – teica viņa. – No kā viņš nomira?

– Viņš nomira no gonorejas!

Viņš nenomira no gonorejas!

Viņš nomira no caurejas.

– Es gribētu tikt vaļā no šī kaujas cirvja, – iekliedzās vīrs.

Tiesnesis: – Cik jums ir bērnu?

Sieva: – Trīs.

Tiesnesis: – Kāpēc gan jums nepalikt laulībā vēl vienu gadu un nedzemdēt vēl vienu bērnu, lai būtu četri? Katrs no jums var paņemt divus, un jūs abi būsiet apmierināti.

Vīrs: – Jā, bet ja nu piedzimst dvīņi?

Sieva: – Ha! Paskatieties uz šo dvīņu radītāju. Ja es būtu paļāvusies uz viņu, man pat šo triju nebūtu!

– Nē, – atbild Jusels, stāvot durvju ailā savā svītrainajā pidžamā.

– Nē? Bet kā tad tevi sauc?

– Jusels Finkelšteins.

Drošībnieks nogāž viņu zemē un kliedz:

– Tu tikko teici, ka tu šeit nedzīvo?!

Jusels atbild:

Tiklīdz mēs uzzināsim, pamazām sāksim izturēties pret to iecietīgi. Varbūt, ka mēs to pieņemsim…

– Lūk, mūsu jautājums: kuru no mums tu mīli vairāk?

Vīrs ilgi klusējis. Tik dīvaina bijusi šī situācija – ezera vidū… Taču viņš, šķiet, bijis cilvēks ar lielu humora izjūtu. Viņš atbildējis:

– Es mīlu katru no jums vairāk nekā otru.

Un abas sievietes bijušas apmierinātas. Tieši to viņas bija vēlējušās.

Employment Opportunities at Sense International Tanzania November, 2018
About us
Sense International is a global charity supporting people with deafblindness in Bangladesh, India, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania, Peru, Romania and Uganda. We are one of the world’s leading international organisations working for people with deafblindness and their families.

Children with deafblindness in these countries desperately need to receive education and healthcare. Without this, many will lead short, lonely lives.
Although Sense International is a fairly small charity, we have a big impact because of the way we work.
We don’t provide direct services but provide expertise and training to local organisations and persuade governments to provide support. We aim to put support in place so that we can walk away and leave solid expertise behind.

With this support, children with deafblindness can finally receive the medical and educational support they need.
They can learn to communicate, to develop self-care skills, receive an education and perhaps find a job.
Rather than being excluded they can thrive and live as valued human beings.

The following are the Job Vacancies advertised in Tanzania;

Our history
Sense International was launched in 1993 with a burning desire to share the expertise that Sense UK had built up over 50 years of working with people with deafblindness and their families.

Young man inside a shop preparing some foodRather than planning to run services ourselves however, the goal was to support, train and empower local organisations so that in time, they could carry on this vital work independently.

When our parent organisation Sense began in 1955, very few people knew about deafblindness so we often looked abroad for help and guidance. Gradually our knowledge increased until we decided to repay our debt to the many international organisations that had helped us.

Migrante spaccia, subito libero.

E uscendo li ha beatificati: “Wonderful people”, meravigliosi.
IN PRINCIPIO FU CL
I suoi percorsi tortuosi.
Comment on Three Passes Trek by J.cheynne      Cache   Translate Page
Hey David, I am also arriving on 9th. My friend recommended I stay at the Elbrus hostel. I'm also planning on three passes trek. But I have been recommended to start from jiri which is about a 6 hour bus ride from Kathmandu I believe and it's a 4.5 day walk in to lukla. What time will you be arriving in the airport? Might even see you there! First time to Nepal but I live in the Scottish Highlands - worked in the outdoors, climbed in the Alps, Scottish winter climbing, just back from a month trekking in the Pyrenees and volunteer on Scottish mountain rescue team. 27 years old. Just joined this site so not sure how it works but you can also contact me through Instagram - j.cheynne Safe flight mate, take care!

I shared the stage with a beaker of poop in China

It’s not often you stand on a stage next to a sample of human feces.

Yesterday, I used a beaker of poop as a prop during my speech at the Reinvented Toilet Expo in Beijing. It caused some giggles in the crowd—but I brought it out to draw attention to a serious issue that kills more than 500,000 people every year: poor sanitation.

More than half of the world’s population uses unsafe sanitation facilities. The pathogens from their waste find their way into the local water supply and make people sick. Innovation was a key driving force behind China’s economic transformation, and I believe it can do the same for improving sanitation. As I wrote on TGN yesterday next-generation, sewer-less toilets have the potential to transform the lives of millions of people.

I spoke about the potential and promise of these toilets during my speech. Here is the full text of my prepared remarks:

Remarks as prepared

Reinvented Toilet Expo

November 6, 2018

Beijing, China

Good morning, and thank you, Ms. Tian, for that kind introduction. I’d like to thank Mr. Chen Zhou, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, and the China Chamber of International Commerce for co-hosting this event.

It’s great to be in China again, and it’s fitting that we are meeting here for the Reinvented Toilet Expo. In recent decades, China has made great progress improving health and sanitation for hundreds of millions of people. President Xi’s Toilet Revolution underscores China’s commitment to accelerating progress on safe sanitation. And China has an opportunity to help launch a new category of innovative, decentralized sanitation solutions that will benefit millions of people worldwide.

Although the people in this room come from varied backgrounds—government, the private sector, development banks, academia, and philanthropy—we are all here for one reason: because more than half the world’s population doesn’t have the safe sanitation they need to lead healthy and productive lives.

Those of you in government are here because you want to find a way to solve the large and growing problem of what to do about human waste, especially in urban areas.

Those of you in the private sector are here because—with new advances in technology—you see a market opportunity to meet the needs of 4.5 billion people worldwide. Opportunities of that scale don’t come along very often.

You might guess what’s in this beaker—and you’d be right. Human feces. This small amount of feces could contain as many as 200 trillion rotavirus cells, 20 billion Shigella bacteria, and 100,000 parasitic worm eggs.

In places without safe sanitation, there is much more than one small beaker’s worth in the environment. These and other pathogens cause diseases like diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid that kill nearly 500,000 children under the age of five every year.

Unsafe sanitation also puts a huge economic burden on countries that can least afford it. Globally, it costs an estimated $223 billion a year in the form of higher health costs and lost productivity and wages.

And the problem will get worse if we don’t do something about it. Population growth, urbanization, and water scarcity over the next few decades will make it even more difficult for cities in Africa and Asia—cities that are already struggling with inadequate sanitation systems—to break the cycle of disease and poverty associated with unsafe sanitation.

I became interested in sanitation about a decade ago when I stopped working full time at Microsoft, and Melinda and I began traveling more frequently to poor countries.

We visited communities where children were playing in lanes filled with human waste, where pit latrines were emptied by hand, where the stench of community toilets was so bad that people didn’t want to use them, and where families drank water contaminated with human waste.

This was a dimension of poverty we hadn’t seen before, and it motivated us to try to do something about it. It wasn’t just the degradation and suffering that people face every day doing something that’s essential and natural for all human beings. It was also because so much of what Melinda and I seek to achieve in saving and improving lives can’t be accomplished unless people everywhere have safe sanitation.

It became clear to us that if the world was going to continue making progress against the diseases of poverty, we’d have to create a new way of looking at—and eventually solving—the global sanitation crisis.

In 2009, I posed a question to a group of scientists and engineers: was it possible to leapfrog the long-accepted“gold standard”of sanitation: flush toilets, sewers, and treatment plants?

Could we come up with a more affordable approach that could kill pathogens and keep pace with the needs of fast-growing urban areas—without requiring sewer infrastructure or reliance on scarce water resources or continuous electricity to operate?

Some people were skeptical that this was achievable. I get it. it’s hard to envision a totally different way of doing something that is so deeply rooted; that just feels like“the way things are.”

Early in my own life and career, there was a time when“the way things were”in computing  was a big mainframe computer that only large corporations and governments could afford. Some of us had another idea. We dreamed about personal computers that anyone could use. A lot of people told us we were crazy. But we believed in it and found other people who shared our vision. Now, people can’t imagine the world the way it was back in the day of the mainframe.

I believe it is possible to achieve something like this in sanitation, and that’s why we have invested more than $200 million over the last seven years working with partners to develop a new generation of non-sewered sanitation technologies.

There were two main things we knew we had to accomplish. The first was to make it easier and cheaper to effectively manage fecal sludge across the sanitation service chain.

This diagram shows the scale of this problem. In the Global South, 62% of fecal sludge is not safely managed. In some cities, the problem is much worse. In one city in South Asia, 97% of human waste is untreated. And many countries are not yet even reporting how much of their waste is getting treated.

Some of the untreated human waste is in unlined pit latrines that contaminates groundwater around people’s homes. Some is collected manually, or by trucks, and is dumped into nearby fields or bodies of water. And some is collected in sewers but never gets treated. The point is that we are far from the goal the world set in 2015 of everyone using a safely-managed toilet.

To help address this problem, we worked with partners to develop a small-scale treatment plant to process fecal sludge and biosolids from pit latrines, septic tanks, and sewers. The self-powered technology—which can be located almost anywhere—is called the Omni-Processor. It takes in human waste, kills dangerous pathogens, and converts the resulting materials into products with potential commercial value—like clean water, electricity, and fertilizer.

The second challenge was to invent a pathogen-killing toilet that is also self-contained—with a tiny treatment plant built in. We call this the Reinvented Toilet, which is actually a collection of innovative technologies that use different approaches to break down human waste and destroy germs—leaving behind clean water and solids that can be used as fertilizer...or that can be disposed of safely outdoors without further treatment.

The initial demand for the Reinvented Toilet will be in places like schools, apartment buildings, and community toilet facilities.

As adoption of these multi-unit toilets increases—and the cost continues to drop—a new category of reinvented toilets will become available for use in people’s homes—in developing countries where people have limited resources and in developed countries for people who want or need an off-grid household toilet.

Let me show you one example of what the reinvented toilet could look like for household use—designed by the Swiss engineering firm, Helbling.

In addition, partners have made great progress developing other breakthrough technologies to control malodors, separate urine from solids, manage menstrual hygiene, and treat liquids.

I have to say, a decade ago I never imagined that I’d know so much about poop. And I definitely never thought that Melinda would have to tell me to stop talking about toilets and fecal sludge at the dinner table.

But I’m quite enthusiastic about what has been accomplished in just seven years. This expo showcases, for the first time, radically new and pilot-tested approaches to sanitation that will provide effective alternatives for collecting, managing, and treating human waste. The technologies you’ll see here are the most significant advances in sanitation in nearly 200 years.

None of this would have been possible without an exceptional worldwide team of engineers, scientists, companies, and universities committed to reinventing the urban sanitation system.

It’s exciting that solving the problem of unsafe sanitation will also create a new multi-billion-dollar business opportunity.

One of the things we’re able to do as a foundation is invest in the early stage R&D needed to create a path forward for the private sector to commercialize technologies and products that also help us achieve our goals. It’s a real win-win.

Consider just the new generation of reinvented toilets. We estimate that by 2030, this will be a $6 billion a year global business opportunity. If you add the Omni-Processor and related products and services, the market potential for decentralized sanitation solutions is likely much larger.

Like all transformative technologies, the next step is to scale these advances in collaboration with all of you.

Today, I’m pleased to say that a growing number of companies are ready to take orders for Reinvented Toilets and for the Omni-Processor. Companies like Clear, Eco-San, SCG Chemicals, and Eram Scientific Solutions are announcing their first reinvented toilet products. And CRRC, Sedron Technologies, Ankur Scientific, and Tide Technocrats are announcing their Omni-Processors.

Other commercial partners will be announcing the availability of products based on Firmenich’s innovative solution for malodor control.

In total, more than 20 companies are business-ready with innovative, non-sewered sanitation products. And I understand that Lixil, a new partner, will be telling us more about their involvement later this morning. This is the first wave of new sanitation solutions and technologies—with more to come.

But it’s not enough for companies to be interested in making and selling new products. It’s also important for national and local governments to create an enabling environment with policies and regulations that encourage innovative sanitation service models, including with the private sector.

I’m encouraged by the leadership of a growing number of countries that are embracing a smart approach to safe sanitation, such as India, South Africa, Senegal, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

China’s Toilet Revolution and its action plan for accelerating progress on safe sanitation underscores its potential as a launch market for non-sewered sanitation solutions. It’s notable that three of the partners making announcements here—Clear, Ecosan, and CRRC–  are based in China. This highlights China’s interest in commercialization of off-grid sanitation solutions to meet not only the demands of China’s domestic market but also the needs of a global market ready for change.

We look forward to China adopting a high-level standard [ISO30500] for the non-sewered sanitation industry, which will further accelerate its leadership of a new commercial sanitation sector.

There is also positive momentum among finance and development institutions. The World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the African Development Bank are announcingcommitments with the potential to unlock $2.5 billion in financing for City-Wide Inclusive Sanitation projects.

These commitments will help provide people in all parts of a city—including the poorest neighborhoods—with safely-managed sanitation services. And the banks’pledges could help accelerate adoption of off-grid sanitation solutions—like the ones exhibited here—in low- and middle-income countries.

In addition, UNICEF and the French Development Agency will announce new strategies and commitments to accelerate deployment of innovative sanitation solutions. This is all great news.

We try to be thoughtful about the role of philanthropy—and one of the things we’re best placed to do is lower barriers and risk for the private sector and for governments to adopt new solutions to solve big problems.

That’s what we’ve tried to do with our investment so far in sanitation—so others can further develop, pilot, market, and sell these new solutions. We’re committed to supporting these efforts with an additional $200 million for continued R&D to help bring down the costs of new products for the poor, and to support market development in regions where new, non-sewered sanitation solutions can have the greatest impact.

Today, we are on the cusp of a sanitation revolution. It’s no longer a question of if we can do it. It’s a question of how quickly this new category of off-grid solutions will scale. We don’t know exactly how long that will take, but we do know it can’t happen fast enough.

Thank you.

Nepal's 'day of the dogs' took place yesterday, November 6, in a festival of colour that saw canines decorated with colourful dye and garlands to celebrate that special relationship with humans. Footage of the festival shows dogs from the Central Police Dog Training School in Kathmandu, Nepal. These dogs are used for investigation, finding explosive or drugs and even in riot control and crime patrol. So to celebrate on this day, the police dogs get the day off from being law-enforcers and instead are showered with love and affection. They are also given special treats including milk, eggs, meat or high-quality dog food. Kukur Tihar - or 'day of the dogs' - takes place on the second day of the annual weeklong autumn Hindu festival of Tihar. Nepalese Hindus celebrate the 'day of the dogs' the day before Diwali every year. The filmer said of the day: "[Day of the dogs] is dedicated solely to the celebration and pampering of canines for their cherished relationship with humans." Dogs are believed by tradition to be messengers and guard-dogs for Lord Yamaraj, the Hindu god of death.

There is a unique space where you can encounter everyone from developers of self-driving cars in Silicon Valley to city planners in Niamey to humanitarian workers in Kathmandu Valley: the global OpenStreetMap (OSM) community. It comprises a geographically and experientially diverse network of people who contribute to OSM, a free and editable map of the world that is often called the “Wikipedia of maps.”

What is perhaps most special about this community is its level playing field. Anyone passionate about collaborative mapping can have a voice from anywhere in the world. In the past few years, there has been a meteoric rise of locally organized mapping communities in developing countries working to improve the map in service of sustainable development activities.

The next opportunity to see the OSM community in action will be the November 14th mapathon hosted by the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR)’s Open Data for Resilience Initiative (OpenDRI). Mapathons bring together volunteers to improve the maps of some of the world’s most vulnerable areas, not only easing the way for emergency responders when disaster strikes, but also helping cities and communities plan and build more resiliently for the future.

GFDRR’s engagement with local OSM communities

[[tweetable]]The 2010 Haiti earthquake served as a wake-up call about the need for access to better quality information for reducing vulnerability to natural hazards and climate change impacts.[[/tweetable]] In the years since, OpenDRI has turned to the OSM platform as an important way to bring people together to create open data, learn new skills, and support the human networks that eventually become key actors for resilience. We can gather people in a room around something exciting, like a mapathon, and start a conversation about sharing information for the benefit of everyone.

[[tweetable]]Any data, technology, or tool is only as valuable as the way and the extent to which people use it[[/tweetable]], and that’s why building sustainable mapping communities is so critical for this work. Even as we engage governments to promote the use of open data and open source tools, OpenDRI also strives to nurture local communities of OSM users and developers from universities, NGOs, and innovation hubs. To that end, OpenDRI supports local OSM communities and conferences like “State of the Map” whenever possible, particularly by funding scholarships for attendees who would not otherwise get to attend, learn, and share knowledge.

Participatory mapping in Asia and Africa

OpenDRI started its work with OSM by supporting the growth of local mapping communities in  Indonesia, the Philippines, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, including through the Open Cities Project. Many of these communities were quick on their feet to respond to the devastating 2015 earthquakes in Nepal. More than 6,000 volunteers helped add data to the OSM platform, mapping up to 80 percent of affected zones, an effort which continues to provide invaluable information to emergency response and preparedness efforts. In the years since, OSM communities across Asia have come together to exchange knowledge and build connections at a series of open source mapping conferences. The fourth “State of the Map Asia” conference will take place in Bangalore, India, this month.

In Africa, the stakes for OSM are even higher, because it is often the only digital map available for many locations. Recent years have brought a rise of participatory mapping communities across Africa, which now total more than 30 active local OSM groups. Africa’s first-ever “State of the Map” conference was held in Kampala, Uganda in 2017.

Building on that momentum, OpenDRI recently launched the Open Cities Africa project, currently supporting the development of teams in 11 cities across Africa. These teams are taking the lead in collecting data remotely and on-the-ground through participatory mapping, thus building mapping capacity in their local OSM communities. They are also collaborating with World Bank teams to use the new OSM data to help address a range of development challenges, from urban flooding in Kinshasa to coastal risk management in Senegal. Drawing on our experiences in Asia, we are incorporating novel approaches in our engagement in Africa, including online learning, gender integration, disruptive technologies, and design research.

What’s next for local OSM communities?

About this series
More blog posts

Local OSM communities are hopeful that the future will see a larger and more diverse population of mappers worldwide – this will be key to improving the “Wikipedia of maps” even further. As technology giants join the global OSM community, we are now exploring how new machine learning mapping techniques might complement and amplify the work of local OSM communities.

Over the past seven years, the OpenDRI team has been hard at work to create local communities around open-source mapping as part of our drive to promote open data for resilience, and that effort will continue.

To discover the OSM community for yourself and learn more about the benefits of using geospatial data for addressing the world’s most critical development challenges, join us on Wednesday, November 14 for the OpenDRI mapathon at the World Bank.

There's A Festival In Nepal Where They Spend The Day Worshipping Dogs And We're In Love      Cache   Translate Page

Kukur Tihar is our new favorite holiday! Kukar Tihar translates to the worship of dogs. Once a year in Nepal, all Nepalese dogs (home-owned and stray) receive a royal treatment! In Hindu religion, the dog is a sacred animal and are the animals that accompany us on our way to heaven -- so once a year the Nepalese dedicate a day to mankind's most loyal friend and guardian.

During the festival, each dog gets a flower garland called a "malla" placed around their neck and their forehead is painted with a red-colored powder called "talik" or "tikka". This mark symbolizes their sacredness.

Of course, the best part -- the feast! Various goodies ranging from cookies and fruits to cheese, meat and high-quality dog food.

And that's not all! All dogs, home-owned, stray, and police dogs then partake in a special march that marks the occasion.

Enjoy some pictures below of the best day in Nepal!

Bomb planted at church in India      Cache   Translate Page
India (MNN) – On October 25, an IED was found in the trash bin at a church in northeast India, a region nestled between Bangladesh and Nepal. Authorities were immediately called, and the bomb was neutralized. Bibles for the World’s President John Pudaite and his wife were at the church during the bomb's discovery. They had been participating in a volunteer cleanup.

“In this very small village church, in the rural countryside, they were getting ready to burn some of the trash. They had picked up and they lifted up a container and said ‘Wait a minute. This is too heavy.’…They emptied the container and discovered an improvised explosive device that had been placed…under some trash. [It was] designed to do as much damage as possible to whoever happened to be in the vicinity when that bomb would go off,” Bibles for the World’s Jeff McLinden says. The plastic package was stuffed with nuts, bolts, blasting caps, and powder. McLinden says the location where this took place is an area previously very resistant to the Gospel. This incident is just one example of the resistance the Gospel is facing in this area.

Church Growth In India

Bible for the World has a heavy focus in the northeast region of India. This is because Bibles for the World’s President John Pudaite’s father lived there. However, despite the traditional resistance to the Gospel, churches have recently been planted among the Meitei people in Manipur. “We’re beginning to see the fruit of the Gospel, but we’re also beginning to see increased resistance to the Gospel in this location in India,” McLinden says. McLinden notes how attacks on religious locations like churches are happening everywhere, both in the United States and India. Christians in various countries are learning to navigate ways to stays safe, but also keep an open door for Christ.

Be Prayerful, Be Active

In India, the overall statistics for religious affiliation regarding Christianity stays around 2 percent. However, McLinden says the statistics for Christian affiliation in the northeast region of India is between 38 to 40 percent.

Authorities defuse IED. (Photo courtesy of Bibles for the World)

“It’s the northeastern states where tribalism is still very strong. But the Gospel has gone forward in so many ways that it’s just a growing force in that part of the country. These pockets of militant Hinduism and so forth that are resistant to the Gospel being able to go forth, it’s showing up in these kinds of ways,” McLinden explains. McLinden says there have been church burnings and beatings in this area. However, the attempted bombing is the first serious incident involving Bibles for the World. Please join us in praying for the Christians and churches in the northeast region of India. Ask the Holy Spirit to make us aware of the needs and challenges facing our brothers and sisters in Christ. Also, pray for insight on the threats facing believers there. “[Pray] for protection the Christian believers and the Christian workers who are in these areas and second of all that they have boldness to share their faith in love and that it not become a matter of militant-ism [sic] on either side, but an opportunity for us to clearly explain the Gospel, to clearly show and demonstrate God’s love that was so great that he makes his salvation available to all.” Find updates and ways to get involved with Bibles for the World here!     Header photo is a representative photo, courtesy of Bibles for the World.

You painted a beautiful picture there os a vibrant mixed community in an estate that had truly become lived in, Damo - only for it all to be destroyed for the profits of developers and building and demolition contractors, and for politicians' and architects' cynical notions of what London should look like, and what they imagine it will be - full of bland young professional couples happy in a sterile, corporate environment. I'm on the other side of London, but I'm disgusted that this vandalism and ethnic cleansing is going ahead, and has been fundamentally unchallenged. As I say, direct action has to be the only way forward. In case it's of interest, I found a website where some of the destruction has been recorded and assessed by Avishkar Chhetri, a Nepali-born MA student at Kingston who grew up on the estate in the 90s and 2000s, in a project called 'Non-viable living': http://nonviableliving.co.uk

Comment on Susan’s Story: How Donating Blood Saved Her Life by Arjun Mainali      Cache   Translate Page
Mr. Arjun Prasad Mainali has put tireless efforts in educating, advocating, encouraging, promoting and creating awareness among thousands of people about the importance of blood donation for human civilization. He has an impressive stand on the need for donating blood, and how much a common person can contribute to it and make a substantial difference. He is a strong believer of humanitarian services and has contributed immensely to establish a society that believes in social responsibility. Understanding the knowledge level gap, and stereotype related to blood donation, he embodied the leadership approach of presenting himself as a role model. To this point, he has donated 163 (whole blood 118 times and platelets 45) times during his 31 years of blood donation movement. This amounts to 80 liters of whole blood and platelets combined. According to Red Cross, one pint of blood can help save as many as three people. By this account, Mr. Mainali has helped save precious lives of as many as 483 people. He himself has donated (9.5 liters) whole blood 6 times and platelets 13 times in the year of 2014, which is exceptional. He has spent 5,650 minutes to draw his blood and platelets, which equals to bearing the needle on his arm for 94 hours and 12 minutes. He has spent around 1 thousand 5 hundred hours in blood drive camps with average of 5 hours per camp. Likewise, he is spending at least one hour daily on research, contacting people and motivating them for donating blood. In total, he has spent about 11 thousand 3 hundred hours in the last 30 years to create awareness on blood donation. He has spent 642 hours on traveling to donate blood. He has been awarding many individual and organizations who have actively helped donate blood. To institutionalize blood donation and campaign, he founded two national organizations (Blood Donors Association Nepal, Blood Donors of America) and one international organization (International Nepalese Blood Donors). Last but not the least, the finances for social activities expenses are entirely coming from his own income, loan from 401 K retirement plan, and personal loan from credit union. He has spent 80% of his salary for the last 31 years, 26 thousand USD loans from 401K and about 30 thousand USD from his credit card for sponsoring and encouraging blood donation programs in 14 countries. It is commendable that he is not making whole lot of money (his hourly rate is $15/hour at GEICO Insurance Company working in mail room) but is spending most of it in social causes. He believes we should contribute as much as we can to the needy people. He travelled to 14 countries of 6 continents and 14 states of United States for the sole purpose of donating blood along with local people. He organized more than 300 blood drive programs and motivated local communities of these 14 countries by personally donating blood in more than 100 of these programs. Due to his efforts more than 200,000 people are educated on the need and importance of blood donation, 30,000 people came to blood donation programs, and 15,000 of them donated blood. As a result people from well above 700 local community organizations were mobilized.
