Animal health emergencies continue to erupt around the world at an ever-increasing pace. Increased global travel, human migration and informal trade of animals and animal products continue to intensify the risk of disease spread. Infectious diseases and other animal health threats have the potential to move rapidly within a country or around the world leading to severe socio-economic and public health consequences. For zoonoses that develop the ability for human to human transmission, an early response to an animal health emergency could prevent the next pandemic. As the demands continue to evolve for effective and efficient management of animal diseases, including emerging diseases and zoonoses, the Emergency Management Centre for Animal Health (EMC-AH) continues to evolve and keep pace with the global demands, adding value to Member States of FAO.

Building on the first eleven years of success, the Centre rebranded its platform in 2018 as EMC-AH, with the full support of the Crisis Management Centre for Animal Health Steering Committee in November 2017. The new name reflects the modernization of the platform and new way of working to better address the needs of the future. Further, the inaugural EMC-AH strategic action plan 2018 2022 released in June 2018 clearly states the vision, mission, and core functions of EMC AH for the coming five years with the aim of reducing the impact of animal health emergencies.

EMC AH’s annual report reflects EMC AH’s new way of working under its strategic action plan and addresses EMC AH performance and actions for the twelve-month period of November 2017-October 2018. During the reporting period, EMC AH contributed to strengthening resilience of livelihoods to animal health-related emergencies and zoonoses through the core pillars of its strategic action plan: preparedness, response, incident coordination, collaboration and resource mobilization. The annual report illustrates EMC-AH’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

FAO’s Member States have an ongoing need for a holistic and sustainable international platform that provides the necessary tools and interventions inclusive of animal health emergency management. EMC-AH strategic action plan requires a substantial commitment of resources to implement the full range of proposed activities, and EMC-AH must maintain key personnel essential to carry out its objectives and components of the 2016-2019 FAO Strategic Framework that addresses increased resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises (Strategic Programme five [SP5]).

As a joint platform of FAO’s Animal Health Service and Emergency Response and Resilience Team, and in close collaboration with related partners and networks, EMC-AH is appropriately positioned to provide renewed leadership, coordination and action for global animal health emergencies.

Mam czasami odjazdy niesprowokowane środkami, jakieś lśnienia, jakąś biel bez końca, ale całkowicie na jawie. Dziś wybrałem się do sklepu tradycyjnie wróżąc sobie ze znalezionych znaków. Zadałem sobie pytanie: czego (na skutek wielu filmów politycznych, geostrategicznych, wyborczych itp.), jako Polacy, powinniśmy się obawiać? I po 20stu krokach znalazłem taki mini kołpaczek od czegoś o średnicy 3ch cm. Przyglądam się i widzę trójząb wystający z fali. Następne pytanie: czy chodzi o Ukraińców, czy o potop? Po 100u metrach znajduję coś plastykowego w kształcie komiksowego dymka o barwach żółtoniebieskich... Dla mnie wszystko jasnym! Nie sugeruję się żadnymi twierdzeniami, ani żadną postacią! Ale lubię przebywać w towarzystwach, od których mogę dowiedzieć się czegoś o czymś dla mnie nieznanym. Nie miejcie mi za złe, że piszę o tak "płaskich" rzeczach, ale każdy proces przekształceniowy wymaga bytów pośrednich... Nie jest możliwym przeskokiem ze wspólnoty pierwotnej do komunizmu jaką była ponoć Mongolia swojego czasu... Ciekaw jestem, czy ktoś z Was ma takie odczucia? Pozdrawiam Wszystkich

Garuda Muda, sebutan Timnas Indonesia U-23, berada di zona timur. Timnas Indonesia tergabung di Grup K bersama Vietnam, Thailand, dan Brunei Darussalam.

Bila dilihat, Grup K merupakan negara-negara yang berada di kawasan Asia Tenggara. Namun sudah jelas, grup ini sangat berat.

Pasalnya, Vietnam merupakan finalis Piala AFC U-23 2018. Mereka juga akan menjadi tuan rumah Grup K di babak kualifikasi Piala AFC U-23 2020. Sedangkan Thailand merupakan tuan rumah Piala AFC U-23 2020.

Perjuangan Timnas Indonesia U-23 di babak kualifikasi Piala AFC U-23 2020 akan dimulai pada 22 hingga 26 Maret tahun depan.

Juara grup dipastikan lolos, sedangkan runner up akan dipilih empat atau lima akan ada empat atau lima runner-up terbaik dari 11 tim runner-up fase kualifikasi yang akan lolos tergantung apakah Thailand masuk dalam dua posisi teratas atau tidak di Grup K.

**WOOL FACT**
Did you know? The processing of wool for textiles has been well developed to take advantage of the various properties of wool and the different types of wool available. At the simplest level wool may be coarsely felted. For example, the felt covers for yurts in Mongolia. This felting is possible because of the wool fiber scales, which, when separated from the skin and facing opposing directions, catch onto one another, permitting the felting of wool into a firm mass of fibers held together by the interlocking action of the scales.
It may be spun into wool yarn from the fleece and either knitted or woven into textile, such s as fisherman knits from Ireland or Navajo blankets.
The wool may be thoroughly cleaned and mixed so that the fibers are not neatly alligned to nearby fibers. It is then spun into woolen yarn. This is a wool yarn where the crimp of the fibers is developing the maximum amount of insulating air space and is very squishy. The yarn also may be combed before spinning to align the fibers together to form a dense worsted yarn relatively low on air space. Wool yarns are made of fine soft wool fibers or thick, stiff fibers.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Presiden ke-5 RI Megawati Soekarnoputri mengajak negara-negara di Asia untuk mendukung proses perdamaian Korea Utara dan Korea Selatan di Semenanjung Korea. Dia pun menyebut bahwa Semenanjung Korea ini sebagai the peninsula of the sovereignty of Asian nation atau semenanjung kedaulatan negara-negara Asia.

Hal itu disampaikan Megawati ketika menjadi pembicara dalam forum internasional The KOR-ASIA Forum 2018 yang digelar di Seoul, Korea Selatan, Rabu (7/11/2018).

Megawati bercerita, dirinya sempat menetaskan air mata ketika April lalu, pemimpin Korea Selatan dan Korea Utara sepakat menandatangani Deklarasi Panmunjon untuk Perdamaian, Kemakmuran dan Persatuan Semenanjung Korea. Baginya, sejarah baru sudah dituliskan, bukan hanya bagi kedua Korea, tapi bagi bangsa di Asia.

"Bagi saya, Semenanjung Korea adalah semenanjung kedaulatan bangsa Asia," kata Megawati dalam keterangannya.

Setelah perdamaian di Semenanjung Korea tercapai, sambung Megawati, tugas berikutnya untuk Asia adalah terus menerus mengawal dan mengisi perdamaian. Dan itu dilakukan tanpa membatasi diri pada hal-hal yang terjadi semata-mata di benua Asia. Ini berdasar sebuah kesadaran, bahwa saat ini semua negara di dunia bergantung satu sama lain.

"Tak ada lagi negara dan bangsa dapat mengucilkan diri dari bangsa-bangsa lain. Urusan dan masalah dunia adalah juga urusan dan masalah Asia. Masa depan Asia bergantung pada pemecahan masalah internasional yang multidimensi," ungkap Megawati.

Oleh karena itu, lanjut dia, perdamaian di Semenanjung Korea sebaiknya memang menjadi simbol persatuan bagi bangsa-bangsa Asia. Yang bersatu karena sikap bersama untuk secara aktif terlibat dalam memberikan sumbangan positif bagi perjalanan umat manusia.

"Tugas kita selanjutnya untuk tetap menggalang persatuan, tak hanya di Asia tetapi juga dengan bangsa-bangsa lain, khususnya Afrika. Asia-Afrika," ujar Megawati.

 

Menginspirasi Negara Lain

Dia menuturkan, dengan hal itu, tentu menginspirasi negara lain. Salah satunya hubungan Asia-Afrika, yang terus dijaga.

"Terima kasih para pemimpin dan rakyat Korea Utara dan Korea Selatan. Anda sekalian telah menginspirasi Asia-Afrika dan dunia bahwa tak ada tugas lebih besar yang lebih penting dari memupuk sebuah perdamaian," jelas Megawati.

Dia pun, atas nama Indonesia, akan selalu menjadi bagian dalam menjaga perdamaian di Semenanjung Korea.

"Saya Megawati Soekarnoputri, mewakili rakyat Indonesia, selalu dan selalu akan menjadi bagian dari perdamaian di Semenanjung Korea. Semenanjung Korea, semenanjung kebangkitan Asia, semenanjung dimana sayap-sayap perdamaian Asia diterbangkan ke segenap penjuru dunia," pungkasnya.

Forum itu menggelar sejumlah seri pembicaraan dan diskusi panel mengenai isu Korea dan Asean, yang didukung penuh oleh The ASEAN-Korea Centre.

Di acara itu, selain Megawati sejumlah petinggi negara lain juga menjadi pembicara. Seperti mantan Presiden Mongolia Punsalmaagiyn Orchirbat, dan Deputi PM Tajikistan Davlatali Said.

Al parecer el dictador y la elite militar y civil de Cuba padecen un mal que bien pudiéramos llamar el síndrome del Quijote. Confunden el deseo con la realidad.

Sorprende que desde la troika suprema del país, integrada por Raúl Castro, Machado Ventura, el administrador Díaz-Canel, hasta el último de los grandes jerarcas de la nación crean que los lazos de "solidaridad" que había con la Unión Soviética pueden ser restablecidos, en parte o totalmente, con la Rusia de hoy.

Saben que no habrá subsidios, pero tienen la esperanza de que la exmadre patria del castrismo haga generosas concesiones en materia comercial, financiera y militar. Falsas ilusiones. La URSS "proletaria" de Marx y Lenin yace sepultada en las rojizas murallas del Kremlin. Y allí mismo brotó la otra Rusia, igualmente con ínfulas imperiales, pero nacionalistas y capitalistas de pies a cabeza: el dinero por delante, o no hay negocio.

Una buena muestra ha sido el reciente viaje del presidente designado, Díaz-Canel, a Rusia, a donde llegó con la misión de mendigar ayuda económica y militar. Rápidamente el segundo jefe del Gobierno ruso, Yuri Borísov, aclaró en el canal televisivo Rossía que la ayuda que su Gobierno prestará a Cuba no será en perjuicio de los intereses económicos de Rusia. Dijo que actuar de ese modo sería "insensato, inconveniente y podría repetirse la experiencia viciosa de la Unión Soviética".

"Por ello", remató, "al ayudar a Cuba y a otros países no perdemos de vista nuestros propios intereses".

Quizá algunos piensen que Borísov lo dijo para tranquilizar a los rusos, que rechazan que Moscú pueda regalar a Cuba el dinero que ellos pagan en impuestos. Pero no, Borísov envió un claro mensaje al jefe de Díaz-Canel: "Tovarich Raúl, Rusia no es la URSS".

Tal vez las ilusiones de La Habana se basan en que Putin es un exmayor de inteligencia, espía de la KGB en Dresde, Alemania Oriental, y todavía pudiera conservar un poco de su "corazoncito" soviético y darle una mano al castrismo.

No. Putin en suelo alemán vio desplomarse el Muro de Berlín y se dispararon sus ambiciones de poder y riqueza personal. Tenía magníficos contactos, y uno de ellos era Boris Yeltsin, quien en 1999 lo dejó como sustituto suyo. Desde entonces Putin es el hombre fuerte de un país de autocracias sinfín que jamás ha conocido la democracia moderna de Montesquieu, Locke, y Rousseau.

Gigante atómico con pies de barro, economía "emergente"


También la elite castrista supone que con las ínfulas imperiales de Putin y su antagonismo con EEUU Moscú puede desafiar cada vez más a Washington. Error doble: 1) Rusia tiene 7.000 ojivas nucleares pero Putin sabe hasta dónde pueden llegar sus atrevimientos geopolíticos, y 2) Rusia es un gigante atómico con pies de barro. No es parte del Primer Mundo.

La economía rusa es clasificada en la ONU como emergente, en un grupo especial llamado BRICS, que integran también China, Brasil, México, India y Sudáfrica. Pero como emergente es prima hermana de Turquía, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Polonia, Indonesia, Malasia y Tailandia, por debajo de Corea del Sur y Taiwán, integrantes del Primer Mundo.

En 1991, al perder Rusia las 14 colonias que completaban la URSS, los rusos se enteraron asombrados de que su país no era una potencia económica, sino que el Producto Interno Bruto (PIB) era inferior al de Brasil, igual al de México, y tres veces más bajo que el de la India. Y sigue siendo así. En 2017 el PIB de Brasil fue de 2,1 billones de dólares y el de Rusia fue de 1,6 billones. El de EEUU fue de 20 billones.

Como consecuencia de 74 años de comunismo, Rusia aún está atrasada con respeto a Europa Occidental. Sigue siendo un país exportador de materias primas, igual que en los últimos 200 años. Hoy los ingresos totales del Estado dependen en un 50% de esas exportaciones, sobre todo de petróleo, espina dorsal de la economía rusa, que 27 años después sufre aún las consecuencias devastadoras del "socialismo real". Últimamente su capacidad para satisfacer las necesidades económicas y sociales de la población no aumenta, sino disminuye.

Por su agresividad geopolítica Rusia sufre de sanciones económicas de EEUU y Europa. Encima tiene problemas de productividad que arrastra de la URSS. Según el Ministerio de Desarrollo Económico, el PIB en 2018 solo crecerá en un 1%, y hasta 2024 no logrará un 3%. La inflación subirá en 2019 a un 5%, algo fatal para el consumo y las inversiones. Y se estima que el barril de petróleo bajará a 56 dólares en 2019 y a 42 dólares en 2020.

La URSS fue un imperio con 15 repúblicas propias, verdaderas colonias soviéticas rusas a las que les succionaba sus riquezas, y otros seis países de Europa del Este y uno de Asia (Mongolia) bajo su total control político. Lenin y sus herederos formalizaron con carácter comunista el antiguo imperio iniciado por Iván el Terrible, primer zar ruso (César en ruso), en el siglo XVI, y ampliado por Pedro el Grande en el siglo XVIII.

Ese eso es lo que añora Putin, pero resulta inalcanzable en el siglo XXI. La URSS tenía 22,4 millones de kilómetros cuadrados, una superficie mayor que los 22,2 millones de toda América Latina. Y el doble de la superficie de un continente, Oceanía.

Si Moscú logró tener cohetes intercontinentales nucleares y naves espaciales fue porque aquella URSS colonialista dedicaba el 17% de su PIB a la esfera militar, mientras el promedio mundial era de 1,1% en 1990, y un 5% en EEUU, según la organización Rand.

Ni modernización militar, ni más comercio

En fin, Rusia no está en condiciones de dar "ayuda fraternal" ni a Cuba ni a nadie. Lo que puede hacer es apoyar al castrismo políticamente, y de forma limitada coadyuvar a cierta reposición del obsoleto parque militar de la Isla, siempre que La Habana lo pague mediante ciertos créditos, como el concedido recientemente por 50 millones de dólares. Baste un detalle: si un avión ruso MIG-35 cuesta 40 millones de dólares, ¿qué modernización militar puede lograr Cuba con solamente 50 millones?

Tampoco es posible aumentar en grande el comercio bilateral. Cuba no tiene ni cash ni casi nada que venderle a Rusia. Ya ni azúcar produce. Hace poco importó 40.000 toneladas de azúcar de Francia. La zafra 2017-2018 fue tan desastrosa que se dejaron de producir 300.000 toneladas que ya estaban vendidas.

Rusia tiene interés en Latinoamérica. Por eso apoya a cuanto gobierno se opone a EEUU. Pero esa ambición tiene el handicap de los pies de barro. Solo intervendrá en Latinoamérica si saca claras ventajas económicas, como hace con el petróleo y el gas en Venezuela. Y aspira a seguir ocupando espacio económico y comercial en Sudamérica si las empresas estadounidenses no se espabilan. Rusia tiene aspiraciones hegemónicas de mayor alcance en el Medio Oriente y Asia Central porque es su entorno inmediato.

El experto militar ruso Igor Korótchenko declaró a la revista Sputnik que Rusia debe volver a Cuba e instalar allí tres bases militares, una de inteligencia electrónica para espiar a EEUU, una base para submarinos nucleares, y hasta desplegar allí sistemas de misiles.

Todo indica que fue un bluff para presionar al Gobierno de EEUU a que no salga del Tratado de Fuerzas Nucleares de Alcance Intermedio firmado por Gorbachov y Reagan en 1987 —que Rusia viola— y para presionar a Washington a que deje las sanciones a Rusia. Putin se ha endiosado con su ambición de gran potencia, pero no al punto de perder el contacto con la realidad.

Moscú no va a provocar una grave crisis con EEUU ni por Cuba ni por ningún otro país lejos de sus fronteras. Políticamente Moscú es aliado de Cuba, pero no ideológicamente. En Rusia el vocablo socialismo es una mala palabra. Ya en la patria de Stalin están vacunados.

Megawati menjadi satu di antara pembicara dalam forum ini dalam kapasitasnya sebagai mantan Presiden Republik Indonesia. Megawati dinilai selama ini aktif mendorong perdamaian di Semenanjung Korea.

Dalam forum tersebut dibagi ke dalam dua fokus pembahasan diskusi panel yaitu untuk hubungan Korea dan ASEAN dengan tema “Mutual Growth and Prosperity” serta pembahasan untuk kawasan Asia Utara dengan tema “New Challenges Road to the Future”.

          The bishop who reaped a hundred-fold      Cache   Translate Page      

Miao, India, Nov 7, 2018 / 07:00 am (CNA).- Many bishops spend their days carefully making plans to lead and manage the dioceses entrusted to them.

Bishop George Pallipparambil of the Indian diocese of Miao is different. He says that in his diocese, the planning is done by God. His job, he says, is to listen and respond.

Officially, his diocese has only existed since 2005. But Bishop Pallipparambil has been tending a flock in rural northeastern India for nearly four decades, watching it grow from 900 baptized Catholics in 1979 to more than 90,000 today, nearly 20 percent of the local population.

When he arrived, he had no plan, no church, no rectory. When asked how it happened, he told CNA simply “God did it.”

Early years

Until very recently, the diocese of Miao, situated along the Chinese border in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, was considered remote, nearly inaccessible.

When Pallipparambil arrived 40 years ago, the region was run by the Indian military as a kind of “state within a state.” Populated by ethnically Mongolian tribes often in violent conflict, it was, Pallipparambil recalls, “in a way forbidden for the Church.”

Originally from Kerala, in southern India, Pallipparambil assisted in setting up a school for tribal children who had migrated south, long before he ever thought of dedicating his ministry to India’s northeastern region.

As students from his school returned home well-fed, able to read and write, and Christian, the elders of warring tribes called a truce, and sent a message south with returning students.

Pallipparambil remembers the children delivering the message, which they had memorized: “Dear Father George, please come to us and tell us more about this God Jesus, who has done so much for our children.” He smuggled himself north in 1979, and has remained there ever since.

Pallipparambil’s first years were marked by trial. Priests were banned in the region, as was evangelizing.

One day, as he walked from village to village preaching the gospel with a lay man, he was arrested and held in the regional police headquarters. It was Christmas, 1980.

“We were not welcome,” he recounted with a smile. “We were picked up around 10:30 in the morning and detained and questioned for hours.”

Word of their arrest made it back to a nearby village in which he had been preaching.

“They finished their Christmas celebrations, and then all the men – a few hundred of them – came with swords and torches to the police station.”

The tribal elder confronted the police superintendent, telling him “Give me back my father.”

“Finally,” Pallipparambil recalled, “at about one-thirty in the night, we were taken back to our mission.”

Freedom in the Gospel

Pallipparambil found the people hungry for the Gospel. “They were living at the level of animism,” he said.

“For them, the Gospel was something very meaningful; it brings liberation in a larger sense but particularly it gave them a dignity they had not known before.”

Conversion to Christianity was and remains a contentious issue in India, but for Pallipparambil it is not a question of “making” converts, but allowing the transformative message of the Gospel to speak for itself.

“Conversion properly understood, especially in India, is like a child growing up – it’s natural. For them it was as simple as this: they were born, were living a primitive kind of religion and then they found something better.”

“Religion is a part of every person’s life, and they were enslaved by these animistic beliefs, which were all they knew,” he told CNA.

The “slavery” to their natural religion was practical, not only theological, Pallipparambil said. The only worship the tribal people knew was ritual animal sacrifice, the cost of which kept them in literal poverty.

“Christianity, the freedom of the Gospel, was also an economic liberation for them,” Pallipparambil explained. Suddenly it opened the communities up to medicine, education, all things that before they simply could not have.

Social development and the spreading of the gospel go hand-in-hand, according to Pallipparambil.

“We never concentrated on pushing the Gospel down anyone’s throat,” he said.

“Our primary goal was to help them, whatever was needed – education, medicine, whatever. These were the works that we did, but they understood. They saw we were there, living with them, staying with them, they saw the witness. Accepting the Gospel was a fruit of our work of love, freely given.”

Human dignity is key to the change, according to the bishop, who has opened 40 schools in the region over the last 30 years. But a literally biblical hundred-fold increase of baptisms cannot be attributed to a few schools.

Achieved without any formal plan for “Christianizing” the people, the results have been nothing short of staggering.

“It is an actual, direct intervention of the Holy Spirit in their lives, it’s not us,” Pallipparambil told CNA.

While the growth of the local Church itself is large, the bishop said that it is its effect on the wider local community which has been most important, comparing it to the gospel metaphors of salt, light, and leaven.

He said that compared to religious tensions which characterize much of the country an atmosphere of tolerance exists in the region. He told CNA this is a fruit of the Church’s presence.

“The reason for this is that among the tribal communities there is equality. The caste system is not there, and for this reason they see the dignity in the Gospel but have rejected Hinduism.”

Dignity of women

One thing Christianity has brought to the tribal communities is advancement for women, Pallipparambil told CNA .

“This was their society, that the women were for housework and for children.”

In many places polygamy was common, Pallipparambil said, noting that child-brides and selling daughters into marriage was also normal.

That is not the case anymore. But like the conversion from animism to Christianity, the change came from example and witness, not by insistence.

“We did not fight that directly, or insist on telling them it is wrong,” the bishop said. “Instead, we started educating these younger girls, organizing training courses for them, teaching literacy and trade skills to young women who really blossomed.”

As the young men left to pursue work or education elsewhere, these women stayed. In short order, the bishop said, they became the leaders of the village, supported by Catholic women’s groups, fostering community and common life where previously they had been totally dependent upon men.

“It was a little thing that completely transformed the entire world of these women.”

Today, in an inversion of generations of practice, these women select their husbands from eligible men of the community. What they always insist on, Pallipparambil told CNA, is that they marry a Christian, or a man who will become a Christian.

“Christianity is a marriage of equals, based on love. This was transformative for the tribes, but it has now spread across the whole state.”

Universal call to holiness

The spread of the Gospel has not just yielded social change or economic improvement, it has also brought about vocations.

When the diocese was founded in 2005 and Pallipparambil made its first bishop, a minor seminary was erected with it. At the same time, many of the young women educated by the Church choose to enter religious life.

While these vocations are welcome, the diocese remains committed to its evangelizing mission, and that includes its approach to vocations.

“They are really committed to the mission, because their parents were lay missionaries; they are the ones who brought the Church here, planted the Church, suffered for the Church.”

The emphasis on the local faithful as lay missionaries is at the root of the diocese’s origin, and its growth.

“When I came here, no missionaries were allowed to even enter. That is how I ended up in jail over Christmas. Everything had to be done by lay people. At first it was the village people themselves, then it was the children, students coming home twice a year from the school in the south.”

“They preached, they converted people, they baptized, and – since Mass was impossible and no priests were allowed – one of them would gather them together in the villages once a week and they would pray together, read the readings of the day, and sing hymns.”

Today, the diocese has 28 priests, with another 68 from religious orders. They serve the 90,000 Catholics spread across the 17 thousand square miles of the diocese, much of it unreachable by car. While another bishop might view this as an intolerable shortage of priests, almost an impossible situation, Bishop Pallipparambil sees it as the key to continued growth in the diocese.

“No one leaves anything for the priest,” he told CNA. “They are the Church, they have to bring the gospel; they know this because they built it.”

When a new community begins in a village, it starts with meetings in the home of a lay catechist, when they grow to the point of needing a church, they physically build it themselves.

“The priests are essential, or course, for hearing confessions and saying Mass. But it is the lay people who evangelize, who form the Church.

In the remote villages, lay missionaries are not bringing the people into a church somewhere else, they are staying there, building the Church.”

The model is a stark contrast to the reality facing many dioceses in the West, where churches are closing. Asked if he thinks the near-total reliance on lay evangelization can be a lesson for the Church elsewhere, Pallipparambil has no doubts.

“Absolutely. We have to give more room to the Holy Spirit and his operation, and less to the ‘heavy machinery’ that generally as Catholics we rely on.”

Formation, the bishop told CNA, is a crucial part of a Church in which the laity truly live the faith and are the Church.

“For me, the biggest fallacy is that we begin formation [at a certain age] and end formation with the reception of the sacraments. Actually we never start and we can never end it. Our entire life has to be an experience of God.”

“Yes, the catechists have to attend certain courses and complete certain credits, but that is pure theory. How does it help to spread the gospel? For this it has to have a real experience of God in your life, and bring this into contact with another.”

When this is done, the bishop said, the Church grows.

Missionary priesthood

Pallipparambil said that while it is difficult for priests to reach all diocesan communities as often as they would like, the important thing is that the faith is alive in them.

Next year, the Synod of Bishops will meet in Rome to discuss the Church in the Amazon. Already, several bishops have suggested that a crucial topic will be the ordination of married men for service in remote communities – very much like the communities in Miao.  

But Pallipparambil says Catholics have no interest in the idea of married priests in his diocese.

“I don’t like to discuss the topic at all, it is a never-ending discussion,” he told CNA.

“One thing I know is this, whenever I have a meeting with a number of young people, university age, I always ask them ‘Do you think more of you would become priests if you were allowed to get married?’ They always say very clearly, ‘we do not want married priests.’”

“One thing I am sure of is this: by baptism all of us are priests, let us enhance this ‘priesthood’ in the laity and let there be less insistence on this clerical solution to everything.”

The lesson of Maio seem especially relevant even for dioceses in the United States, where priests now find themselves stretched across several different parishes.

“Priests have to become a little more available so they can reach out to many more with fewer numbers. We have to change certain things with our thinking, our scheduling of priestly life, and become much more elastic.”

“We grow by interaction. We can all of us spend our lives locked in libraries or on websites reading everything, becoming an expert – a giant – but on our own. Will I not become much more useful to God if I know half of it, but live my whole life sharing it with others?”

Chicken-fried steak is a southern riff on the wiener schnitzel.

According to The Spruce Eats, German immigrants introduced the concept of fried steak (a riff on wiener schnitzel, or breaded, fried veal cutlets) to the southern United States in the 19th century.

Chicken-fried steak ― named for its preparation style, similar to how fried chicken is cooked ― and its cousin, country-fried steak, are variations on the theme of breading and frying meat. While the former dish is typically crispier and served with white gravy, the latter is often accompanied by brown gravy, which sometimes gets added to the steak in the final stages of the cooking process so the flavor can be fully absorbed.

Steak tartare has been traced to Mongolian horsemen and became popular in 20th-century Paris.

Despite a dearth of historical proof that Mongolian horsemen ate raw beef, steak tartare has nonetheless been traced to central Asia. The dish's name stems from the Latin word "Tartarus" (hell), due to its presumed association with barbaric nomads.

It became popular in the western world when Russians introduced this dish of chopped, uncooked meat (usually beef, horse meat more rarely), raw egg, and seasoning in Germany, according to The Real French Foods. From there, it gained traction as an haute cuisine staple at high-end hotels in Paris in the early 20th century. In fact, "steak tartare" is actually an abbreviation of "à la tartare," a French phrase referring to the sauce that accompanied the meat ― tartar sauce. However, most contemporary iterations are flavored with a mixture of Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, hot sauce, and ketchup.  

"You can tell a lot about a restaurant and a chef by how they execute beef tartare," Nick Fine, chef de cuisine at One Fifth in Houston, Texas, told Food & Wine. "Tartare is raw meat that's simply seasoned: When it's done correctly, it hits all the notes. When it's wrong, it's wrong."

All around updates in the TeX Live on Debian world: Besides the usual shipment of macro and font packages, we have uploaded a new set of binaries checked out from current svn, as well as the latest and shiniest version of biber to complement the macro update of biblatex.

The version for the binary packages is 2018.20181104.49075 and is based on svn revision 49075. That means we get:

  • new dvisvgm version 2.6.1
  • several bugfixes in dvipdfmx
  • addition of dviout-util (previously only available on Windows): dvispc, chkdvifont
  • various security related bugfixes

In addition to that, in Debian we switched to the separately packaged version of teckit instead of using the one shipped in TeX Live.

The version of the macro/font packages is 2018.20181106-1 and contains the usual set of updated and new packages, see below for the complete list. One important – though not functional – update is the one of hyph-utf8, where the license of the UK English patterns has changed from a TeX like license statement (changes allowed with renaming clause) that generates again and again puzzlement in the Debian community (latest instance is bug 912557, which actually spread out into other packages). Thanks to the original authors and the team of hyph-utf8 these patterns are now finally under the MIT license.

Biber has been updated to 2.12-1 which is compatible with the version of biblatex in the current set of packages.

The packages are already included in the archive but might need a bit until arriving at your local mirror.

Meet the Bird Man, my friend Ideree. (See him pictured here.) 

Why do I call Ideree the Bird Man? Because he’s more famous worldwide for his bird photography than for his pastoring a church or working with the leadership team of Asian Access. I tease him saying “Ideree, you are the most famous pastor in Mongolia.” He’s clearly embarrassed by that. But, check out his FB page and see the birds. While I love Ideree’s photography and can’t wait for his professional photos to come out from our trip, I’m even more impressed with what he’s doing in his church. His father and mother were pastoring when Asian Access began in Mongolia and he was assigned to drive for us during the first two cohorts. Later though, his father passed away, and Ideree became the pastor of the church. That’s where Asian Access helped him the most. 

He realized...

“I don’t have to be like other pastors or like all the famous church leaders out there. I don’t even have to be like my father.”

Ideree became one of “the few who is changing the many.” 

Ideree changed his paradigm for the church and they lost people after the transition from his father’s leadership. However, today his mother is leading another church and Ideree has 12 disciples leading small house fellowships or chapels that are intended to become churches. So, in many ways, Ideree is proving to be a very effective and fruitful pastor. 

Is he famous like other Mongolian pastors or world-renowned Christian leaders? No. As I said above, he’s more known as a bird photographer. But, Ideree is a very fruitful pastor and I’m proud of him! He is “changing the few who change the many” in Mongolia today.

          Meet Ariunbold: A "Bold" Vision for Church Planting      Cache   Translate Page

Meet ARIUNBOLD! (pictured here with Silk and me)

He has vision like I’ve rarely seen. It’s a God-given vision, passion, and gift mix that truly is rare among pastors these days but one that Asian Access loves to fan the flames for. Ariunbold truly is “Bold” in his faith and action.

When he joined the first A2 cohort in Mongolia almost 20 years ago, Ariunbold had started 3 churches. But through Asian Access he was inspired and equipped to take his unique gifts into a whole new stratosphere. He is the embodiment of our brand: “Changing the few who change the many.”

You have heard about him before from me. My first year with Asian Access, he was the one who consistently said,

“Joe, me servant.”

And again on this trip to Mongolia, he used that phrase several times. He was the one who said:

“Joe, there are Mongols in Russia, China, Kazakhstan, and Korea. And, (with a heightened voice some spit hitting my face) we need to reach them for the Gospel!”

Later I saw him in Seoul, Korea where he was trying to plant another church among Mongols living there. Today, you are not going to believe what he’s accomplished. Since graduating from Asian Access, he has planted 50 churches in four countries: Mongolia, Korea, America, and Canada. What a bold vision!

Through Ariunbold’s “Bold Vision” God is “Changing the few who change the many!”

Miao, India, Nov 7, 2018 / 07:00 am (CNA).- Many bishops spend their days carefully making plans to lead and manage the dioceses entrusted to them.

Bishop George Pallipparambil of the Indian diocese of Miao is different. He says that in his diocese, the planning is done by God. His job, he says, is to listen and respond.

Officially, his diocese has only existed since 2005. But Bishop Pallipparambil has been tending a flock in rural northeastern India for nearly four decades, watching it grow from 900 baptized Catholics in 1979 to more than 90,000 today, nearly 20 percent of the local population.

When he arrived, he had no plan, no church, no rectory. When asked how it happened, he told CNA simply “God did it.”

Early years

Until very recently, the diocese of Miao, situated along the Chinese border in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, was considered remote, nearly inaccessible.

When Pallipparambil arrived 40 years ago, the region was run by the Indian military as a kind of “state within a state.” Populated by ethnically Mongolian tribes often in violent conflict, it was, Pallipparambil recalls, “in a way forbidden for the Church.”

Originally from Kerala, in southern India, Pallipparambil assisted in setting up a school for tribal children who had migrated south, long before he ever thought of dedicating his ministry to India’s northeastern region.

As students from his school returned home well-fed, able to read and write, and Christian, the elders of warring tribes called a truce, and sent a message south with returning students.

Pallipparambil remembers the children delivering the message, which they had memorized: “Dear Father George, please come to us and tell us more about this God Jesus, who has done so much for our children.” He smuggled himself north in 1979, and has remained there ever since.

Pallipparambil’s first years were marked by trial. Priests were banned in the region, as was evangelizing.

One day, as he walked from village to village preaching the gospel with a lay man, he was arrested and held in the regional police headquarters. It was Christmas, 1980.

“We were not welcome,” he recounted with a smile. “We were picked up around 10:30 in the morning and detained and questioned for hours.”

Word of their arrest made it back to a nearby village in which he had been preaching.

“They finished their Christmas celebrations, and then all the men – a few hundred of them – came with swords and torches to the police station.”

The tribal elder confronted the police superintendent, telling him “Give me back my father.”

“Finally,” Pallipparambil recalled, “at about one-thirty in the night, we were taken back to our mission.”

Freedom in the Gospel

Pallipparambil found the people hungry for the Gospel. “They were living at the level of animism,” he said.

“For them, the Gospel was something very meaningful; it brings liberation in a larger sense but particularly it gave them a dignity they had not known before.”

Conversion to Christianity was and remains a contentious issue in India, but for Pallipparambil it is not a question of “making” converts, but allowing the transformative message of the Gospel to speak for itself.

“Conversion properly understood, especially in India, is like a child growing up – it’s natural. For them it was as simple as this: they were born, were living a primitive kind of religion and then they found something better.”

“Religion is a part of every person’s life, and they were enslaved by these animistic beliefs, which were all they knew,” he told CNA.

The “slavery” to their natural religion was practical, not only theological, Pallipparambil said. The only worship the tribal people knew was ritual animal sacrifice, the cost of which kept them in literal poverty.

“Christianity, the freedom of the Gospel, was also an economic liberation for them,” Pallipparambil explained. Suddenly it opened the communities up to medicine, education, all things that before they simply could not have.

Social development and the spreading of the gospel go hand-in-hand, according to Pallipparambil.

“We never concentrated on pushing the Gospel down anyone’s throat,” he said.

“Our primary goal was to help them, whatever was needed – education, medicine, whatever. These were the works that we did, but they understood. They saw we were there, living with them, staying with them, they saw the witness. Accepting the Gospel was a fruit of our work of love, freely given.”

Human dignity is key to the change, according to the bishop, who has opened 40 schools in the region over the last 30 years. But a literally biblical hundred-fold increase of baptisms cannot be attributed to a few schools.

Achieved without any formal plan for “Christianizing” the people, the results have been nothing short of staggering.

“It is an actual, direct intervention of the Holy Spirit in their lives, it’s not us,” Pallipparambil told CNA.

While the growth of the local Church itself is large, the bishop said that it is its effect on the wider local community which has been most important, comparing it to the gospel metaphors of salt, light, and leaven.

He said that compared to religious tensions which characterize much of the country an atmosphere of tolerance exists in the region. He told CNA this is a fruit of the Church’s presence.

“The reason for this is that among the tribal communities there is equality. The caste system is not there, and for this reason they see the dignity in the Gospel but have rejected Hinduism.”

Dignity of women

One thing Christianity has brought to the tribal communities is advancement for women, Pallipparambil told CNA .

“This was their society, that the women were for housework and for children.”

In many places polygamy was common, Pallipparambil said, noting that child-brides and selling daughters into marriage was also normal.

That is not the case anymore. But like the conversion from animism to Christianity, the change came from example and witness, not by insistence.

“We did not fight that directly, or insist on telling them it is wrong,” the bishop said. “Instead, we started educating these younger girls, organizing training courses for them, teaching literacy and trade skills to young women who really blossomed.”

As the young men left to pursue work or education elsewhere, these women stayed. In short order, the bishop said, they became the leaders of the village, supported by Catholic women’s groups, fostering community and common life where previously they had been totally dependent upon men.

“It was a little thing that completely transformed the entire world of these women.”

Today, in an inversion of generations of practice, these women select their husbands from eligible men of the community. What they always insist on, Pallipparambil told CNA, is that they marry a Christian, or a man who will become a Christian.

“Christianity is a marriage of equals, based on love. This was transformative for the tribes, but it has now spread across the whole state.”

Universal call to holiness

The spread of the Gospel has not just yielded social change or economic improvement, it has also brought about vocations.

When the diocese was founded in 2005 and Pallipparambil made its first bishop, a minor seminary was erected with it. At the same time, many of the young women educated by the Church choose to enter religious life.

While these vocations are welcome, the diocese remains committed to its evangelizing mission, and that includes its approach to vocations.

“They are really committed to the mission, because their parents were lay missionaries; they are the ones who brought the Church here, planted the Church, suffered for the Church.”

The emphasis on the local faithful as lay missionaries is at the root of the diocese’s origin, and its growth.

“When I came here, no missionaries were allowed to even enter. That is how I ended up in jail over Christmas. Everything had to be done by lay people. At first it was the village people themselves, then it was the children, students coming home twice a year from the school in the south.”

“They preached, they converted people, they baptized, and – since Mass was impossible and no priests were allowed – one of them would gather them together in the villages once a week and they would pray together, read the readings of the day, and sing hymns.”

Today, the diocese has 28 priests, with another 68 from religious orders. They serve the 90,000 Catholics spread across the 17 thousand square miles of the diocese, much of it unreachable by car. While another bishop might view this as an intolerable shortage of priests, almost an impossible situation, Bishop Pallipparambil sees it as the key to continued growth in the diocese.

“No one leaves anything for the priest,” he told CNA. “They are the Church, they have to bring the gospel; they know this because they built it.”

When a new community begins in a village, it starts with meetings in the home of a lay catechist, when they grow to the point of needing a church, they physically build it themselves.

“The priests are essential, or course, for hearing confessions and saying Mass. But it is the lay people who evangelize, who form the Church.

In the remote villages, lay missionaries are not bringing the people into a church somewhere else, they are staying there, building the Church.”

The model is a stark contrast to the reality facing many dioceses in the West, where churches are closing. Asked if he thinks the near-total reliance on lay evangelization can be a lesson for the Church elsewhere, Pallipparambil has no doubts.

“Absolutely. We have to give more room to the Holy Spirit and his operation, and less to the ‘heavy machinery’ that generally as Catholics we rely on.”

Formation, the bishop told CNA, is a crucial part of a Church in which the laity truly live the faith and are the Church.

“For me, the biggest fallacy is that we begin formation [at a certain age] and end formation with the reception of the sacraments. Actually we never start and we can never end it. Our entire life has to be an experience of God.”

“Yes, the catechists have to attend certain courses and complete certain credits, but that is pure theory. How does it help to spread the gospel? For this it has to have a real experience of God in your life, and bring this into contact with another.”

When this is done, the bishop said, the Church grows.

Missionary priesthood

Pallipparambil said that while it is difficult for priests to reach all diocesan communities as often as they would like, the important thing is that the faith is alive in them.

Next year, the Synod of Bishops will meet in Rome to discuss the Church in the Amazon. Already, several bishops have suggested that a crucial topic will be the ordination of married men for service in remote communities – very much like the communities in Miao.  

But Pallipparambil says Catholics have no interest in the idea of married priests in his diocese.

“I don’t like to discuss the topic at all, it is a never-ending discussion,” he told CNA.

“One thing I know is this, whenever I have a meeting with a number of young people, university age, I always ask them ‘Do you think more of you would become priests if you were allowed to get married?’ They always say very clearly, ‘we do not want married priests.’”

“One thing I am sure of is this: by baptism all of us are priests, let us enhance this ‘priesthood’ in the laity and let there be less insistence on this clerical solution to everything.”

The lesson of Maio seem especially relevant even for dioceses in the United States, where priests now find themselves stretched across several different parishes.

“Priests have to become a little more available so they can reach out to many more with fewer numbers. We have to change certain things with our thinking, our scheduling of priestly life, and become much more elastic.”

“We grow by interaction. We can all of us spend our lives locked in libraries or on websites reading everything, becoming an expert – a giant – but on our own. Will I not become much more useful to God if I know half of it, but live my whole life sharing it with others?”
