This was a record-#-finished month for me, too. Much Ado About Nothing (because I couldn't wait on The Play's the Thing podcast to finish it--this was my first time reading it). A Wonder Book by Nathaniel Hawthorne and a library cast-off book on Marco Polo (pre-reads). The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare and On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness by Andrew Peterson (family read-alouds very much enjoyed). And then Archimedes and the Door of Science (Morning Time). :-) No disappointments in this list and pretty easy reading aside from Shakespeare. Currently reading: CM's Vol 6 for my local book club, The Return of the King (this is taking me all year, lol), Future Grace by John Piper, This Country of Ours (audio preread), Ouachita Trail Guide by Tim Ernst (because: backpacking), The New Way Things Work by David Macaulay (co-reading with my 9yo), Walking from East to West (autobiography of Ravi Zacharias), Trial and Triumph, and Story of the World Vol. 3 (those last two are Morning Time Read-Alouds).

Former US Treasury secretary Hank Paulson warns of an 'economic iron curtain' if the US and China can't find a way to get along      Cache   Translate Page

US China lifting

  • Former US Treasury secretary Hank Paulson has warned of an "economic iron curtain" dividing the world if the US and China fail to resolve their burgeoning strategic differences.
  • Speaking from the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore, the 74th secretary of the US Treasury said the world is "arriving at a moment of change, challenge, and potentially even crisis."
  • Referring to the "unprecedented political pressure on cross-national supply chains" and "great power competition surges" across the Indo-Pacific, Paulson warned of a once-healthy strategic competition tipping into "a full-blown cold war."

Former US Treasury secretary Hank Paulson has told a forum in Singapore that if the US — consciously or otherwise — goes ahead and decouples from China, then it will likely isolate itself from the region and trigger a "full-blown" cold war.

Paulson spoke of an "economic iron curtain" cleaving the world into estranged spheres should the US and China fail to get their houses in order and resolve their burgeoning strategic differences.

Speaking from the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore, the 74th secretary of the US Treasury said the world is "arriving at a moment of change, challenge, and potentially even crisis."

Referring to the "unprecedented political pressure on cross-national supply chains" and "great power competition surges" across the Indo-Pacific, Paulson warned of a once-healthy strategic competition tipping into a "full-blown cold war" that could bring down the entire international system.

"As Treasury Secretary, I presided over the US response to the 2008 financial crisis, so I know a little something about systemic risk. And I simply cannot see how the international system can endure when the two countries that comprise some 40% of global GDP and over 50% of global growth are working at cross-purposes, attempting to de-integrate their two economies, and contesting the foundations of a rules-based order at every turn," Paulson said.

Sino-US ties have been getting icy over for some time now, with the headline-topping body-blows of a months-old trade war, just the tip of an iceberg weighed down by a shopping list of unresolved economic issues, from trade deficits to trademarks.

China's President Xi Jinping (习近平) took the latest potshots in an increasingly acrimonious relationship when on Monday he lambasted President Donald Trump's calling card "America First" policies.

Speaking from Hangzhou (杭州) where the Communist Party boss relished the chance to champion global free trade, Xi mocked the US administration's aggressive "beggar-thy-neighbor" (yi lin wei he 以邻为壑) approach to cross-border trade.

We need to talk ...

Wilting ties aside, Paulson said the US is in danger of falling victim to its own rhetoric on China's misdeeds.

A growing majority at home now see China not just as a strategic challenge to US interests but as a country whose rise has come pretty much at America's expense.

With this snowballing fear in the US that China has been using underhanded policies and sneaky strategies to build — most especially — an arsenal of indigenous high technologies, Paulson warned that the cold shoulder would not work in containing China.

"Some in the United States now advocate a Cold War-style technology denial regime," Paulson said. "No country, in my view, will 'divorce' a major nation that remains, even amid a slowdown, among the world’s fastest growing major economies."

He said China's habitual stealing of technology, its obligatory forced technology transfers for joint ventures and its totalitarian approach to internet governance and cross-border data flows were naturally raising serious alarm, but cautioned that both nations are now simply too tightly connected to just start cutting cords.

"Innovation and technology cannot be separated from business competitiveness."

"So, such a Balkanization of technology could further harm global innovation, not to mention the competitiveness of firms around the world."

Seemingly addressing the administration itself, Paulson warned that in its effort to isolate China, the US now "risks isolating itself."

Calling the US-China strategic interaction easily the most consequential of all, Paulson said its failure could put at risk "the very functioning" of the global system. "I am very sobered by the trajectory we are on now."

On China's great iron curtain

The path to avoiding an "economic iron curtain" descending across the Indo-Pacific would begin with China's embrace of basic economic reforms that would continue to open up its markets in the same way as its global competitors and partners.

At the same time the former secretary said the US kind of needed to grow up, tone it down and trust a bit more in its own values.

"Dial down the rhetoric," he said

"Strategic competition is a fact. We have compelling differences of national interest between our two countries. And we clearly have clashing security concepts, not least in the South China Sea."

Paulson also lamented the president's slash-and-burn attitude to multilateral institutions and especially his decision to nix the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP).

"To be blunt about this, I wish President Trump would reconsider his decision to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership. A TPP 2.0 would offer a ready-made vehicle to shape the trade environment in which Beijing operates," Paulson said.

But for all its fireworks and fury, Paulson insisted China does not pose an "existential threat" to American civilization.

"We should prepare for the obvious strategic challenges from China. But in doing so, let’s not sacrifice those values — or the commitment to openness — that has made us the strongest, most competitive, and most admired country in the world."

"In the 242nd year of our great democratic experiment, we should have more confidence in America and the resilience of our system."

The 'D' word

All couples face change, and the message out of Singapore was for China and the US to get over their differences and find a way forward, because there are no winners in a divorce.

"Frankly, deintegration is inevitable, and even necessary, in some areas — not least to protect our national security. But it is decidedly not in America’s interest to attempt this across the board."

And divorce doesn't really work well for global business.

"At this point, after 40 years, when we have had one kind of relationship but now, quite clearly, face the daunting task of transitioning to a new one – anchored in a realistic and more sustainable – strategic framework – divorce is a real risk.

"If China doesn’t move quickly, I suspect the calls for divorce will intensify. And it pains me to say that."

China's Hong Kong Mega Bridge Riles Former Colonialists       Cache   Translate Page
November 4, 2018 (Joseph Thomas - NEO) - Officially called the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, the 55 kilometre-long bridge-tunnel is an engineering marvel physically connecting Hong Kong and Macau to China's mainland.

Beyond providing links to the mainland, the bridge helps form a wider bay area, connecting several cities, spurring the movement of tourists, workers and goods.

Like the recently opened Hong Kong-mainland high-speed rail line, the bridge's completion has been met with widespread derision across Anglo-American media. No fault, real or imagined, escaped mention.

It is the political implications of the bridge's construction in particular that have riled China's former colonial concerns. The bridge is yet another very tangible example of Beijing exercising its sovereignty over all of its territory, including Hong Kong, taken back from the British and Macau taken back from the Portuguese.

Moscow has done likewise with the construction of the Crimean Bridge, exercising its sovereignty over the Crimean Peninsula reunited with Russia. A similar storm of derision swept Anglo-American headlines.

Western Media Decries the rise of Chinese Sovereignty

Encapsulating Anglo-American protests is the Washington Post's article, "The world’s longest bridge-tunnel brings China even closer to Hong Kong. Not everyone is pleased," which claims:
The bridge’s completion comes as China under Xi is extending its grip over Hong Kong, a city of 7.4 million that was given special status when it was handed back from the British to China in 1997.

Under the “one country, two systems” policy, Hong Kong’s economic and political systems are supposed to remain untouched for 50 years — until 2047 — and distinct from mainland China’s, allowing the territory to retain its own government, judiciary, currency and so on.
A flurry of infrastructure development, however, has served to physically bind the regions in a more tangible way. In late September, an $11 billion high-speed rail link opened between Hong Kong and mainland China, cutting the time between the territory and major Chinese cities.
Beijing is undeniably consolidating its control over these territories. They were taken from China by force by European, and later American invaders, occupied and only handed over once China began its rise to economic and military parity with the West. To this day, Washington and London attempt to exert influence over Hong Kong and more consequentially, through it, in efforts to politically undermine China's mainland as well.

But in according to the West's own maxim of might makes right, China's mega bridge represents a steel and concrete band tying these former colonial territories tighter to the mainland, squeezing out the last dwindling influence of these foreign interests.

The Washington Post and other articles across Anglo-American media referred to their reliable stable of "pro-democracy" politicians in Hong Kong to provide the illusion of local displeasure. As with the recent Hong Kong high-speed rail link, Claudia Mo, a Hong Kong politician and former AFP reporter, would decry the new bridge as Chinese encroachment on Hong Kong.

She would claim:
This project is so obviously a political symbol. I’m sure Beijing knew clearly that we didn’t quite need it and that it was not necessary for the time being. The bridge is a permanent fixture and permanent reminder that Hong Kong is forever and ever connected to the vast hinterland of mainland China.
It is all connected — the reclamation, bridge, high-speed rail. It is all telling Hong Kong that you are part of China, you are very much part of it, and you can’t get out of it.
What is often overlooked by Western commentary and analysis regarding Hong Kong, however, is the fact that "pro-democracy" and "pro-independence" politicians and activists like Mo represent the vestiges of colonial occupation. Since many of these politicians and activists still receive direct support from Washington and London to engage in subverting Beijing, in many ways they also represent modern-day imperialism within Chinese territory.

The bridge, the high-speed rail, do indeed declare Hong Kong as irreversibly Chinese, and there is no getting out of it anymore than London could leave the United Kingdom. If we could imagine the Chinese government attempting to say otherwise, and through funding political subversion, protests and propaganda attempting to exert influence over and through London, we may see just how absurd Anglo-American outrage really is regarding the finality of China's emergence as a fully sovereign nation and its control, desires and will regarding its own territory.

  6日下午,记者在乌镇枕水酒店专访了GSMA(全球移动通信系统协会)首席执行官John Hoffman(约翰·霍夫曼)先生,他还有个中文名叫洪曜庄。

Oct 1 Went to see Shamim Damji and her pharmacy, Samson's, at lunchtime as requested for weekly report but she was on a course.
2nd     Liz phoned in sick so a busy day with my right hand lady, dispenser Maureen. Liz was to prove such a pain I was very happy when she found another job. First day too cold to sit in the park for a lunchtime pipe.
3rd      Session. Took Deb and Katy to Saving Private Ryan. Over rated. Over American. Over gory. Sound poor but I loved the Psalm quoting sniper.
4th      Led in morning but David B said I was like a man whose team had lost 0-1 at home yesterday . Leeds had!
A few days with no diary entries prove David had correctly spotted my depression. Eventually it led to me being stopped leading services. This was the undiagnosed chronic bipolar IMO.
10th     To Potters Bar celebrating Leaper's silver wedding.
11th      DB led with a long confession of sin. SC seemed out of sorts.
17th      Worship leaders meeting better than expected and quite encouraging. Watched Devil's Advocate which has become a favourite film, one I have watched it several times which is a rarity. it has hidden depths and wood quotes too.
18th      Gave David birthday present of £30 which was towards a stereo which he promptly bought.
19th      Gave Maureen chocolates for her birthday. Housegroup at Judy's, Eph 3.
22nd     Becklers visit with Noah and an expensive bottle of Jack Daniels.
23rd      I am down and lacking in fellowship with the Lord. I think it is in part the strain of the new busy job. I changed work because free from councillor responsibilities I could work farther away rom Ealing as I no longer needed o be a at 7pm town hall meetings.
24th       With Katy to see Margery in hospital. She looked dehydrated.
25th        Did tandoori for pot luck in honour of Becklers who spoke in evening about his Pasadena based PCUSA mission work with unreached peoples. J&M here to hear them. Daily devotions are hard. I was yet to be definitely disciplined with daily devotions. Once again the undiagnosed bipolar contributed I am sure.
26th        Half term so road to work quieter. Liz back but still not really fit it seems and she did not react well to a disciplinary warning. Sabine from Samsons helped in morning.Visited Margery at Northwick park where parking is difficult and the long corridor to the wards totally depressing.
27th        Feeling better with devotions. Sometimes I would sing myself into work. Not because I felt good but because I wanted to praise as a duty until I felt better. The boss says the warning I was told to give liz was for continual health absences. First time failed to get a parking space at work.
28th        To Speedwell practice lunchtime meeting with a rep providing lunch and showing an embarrassing video on erectile disfunction. Good to meet three lady doctors. Sabine prefers me to Samson's shop. Ep4 housegroup at marbles.

Woodcarving exhibition set      Cache   Translate Page

An exhibition showcasing the practical uses and artistic qualities of Chaozhou woodcarving will open tomorrow at the Hong Kong Museum of History.

Speaking at the opening ceremony today, Director of Leisure & Cultural Services Michelle Li said the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau governments signed the Greater Pearl River Delta Cultural Exchange & Co-operation Development Plan 2014-2018 in 2014 to strengthen co-operation.

She said the Hong Kong Museum of History and Guangdong Museum launched an exhibition exchange programme this year, demonstrating the close relationship between the cultural institutes of both places.

Ms Li thanked the Department of Culture & Tourism of Guangdong Province, the Guangdong Museum and the Federation of Hong Kong Chiu Chow Community Organizations for bringing treasures of traditional Chinese art and culture to Hong Kong.

Chaozhou woodcarving is a traditional Chinese folk handcraft known as "gilt wood" and was inscribed onto the first national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

Highlight exhibits include a gilt wooden diamond-shaped food container featuring a pigmented lacquer painting of Wine from Wang Maosheng, and a large gilt wooden lobster and crab cage in openwork provided by Gu Liuxi who inherited the national intangible cultural heritage of Chaozhou woodcarving.

With 120 exhibits, the exhibition will also illustrate the Chaoshan community in Hong Kong's customs and traditions, including the Yu Lan Festival, Chaozhou opera, Chaozhou music, dietary habits and religious rituals.

The exhibition will run until February 25.

PREVISÃO DO TEMPO

Satélite:Tempo agora no estado do ceará

Untuk pemain lokal, CLS Knight punya A.A. Ngurah Wisnu Budhidharma S, Sandy Febiansyakh Kurniawan, Rachmad Febri Utomo, Arif Hidayat, Jan Misael Panagan, Firman Dwi Nugroho, Katon Adjie Baskoro, Bima Riski Ardiansyah, dan Mh. Saroni. Roster CLS memang belum lengkap.
