Oakland Raiders - Indianapolis Colts 28:42

Jeremiah Hurst Adds His Name To The List Of All Iowa Points Late Model Champions      Cache   Translate Page
In the fifty-second season of compiling the All Iowa Points Jeremiah Hurst becomes the twenty-third different driver to earn the title of Late Model champion. The list of champions includes ten National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame members Red Droste, Verlin Eaker, Ed Sanger, Curt Hansen, Gary Webb, Tom Hearst, Ken Walton, Roger Dolan,  Ray Guss Jr. and Joe Kosiski, and if not for health reasons Hurst might have been an All Iowa champion a few years earlier as he was the point leader mid-season before having to step away from the sport for a bit.

Teaming up with the Roberts Racing Team car #58, a team that won four straight All Iowa Points titles with Ray Guss Jr. from 2009 through 2012, Hurst had a stellar 2018 season taking seven feature wins and finishing in the top five an impressive forty-two times. Seventeen of those were runner-up finishes allowing him to edge out the defending champion Matt Ryan by eighteen points. It was another great year for Ryan with eleven feature victories in thirty-seven top five runs.

Three time All Iowa Points Modified champion Ryan Dolan (2010 - 2012) had his best season in a Late Model finishing in the third position with ten wins to his credit while early season leader Andy Nezworski ranked fourth taking nine feature wins. Todd Cooney who is still chasing his first AIP title despite having the most points accumulated in the division since the 2000 season rounds out the top five with eleven wins this year. Four time champion Rob Toland (2004, 2006-07, 2016) finished tenth.

The "Newcomer of the Year", or the driver who has never had a top five finish in the division until 2018 is Mike Mills who raced in the 9:1 Late Model division in Dubuque this season. Mills was tied for the 53rd position on the list.

We will continue to release the final 2018 All Iowa Points by division as this week goes on with the Modifieds up next.

Meet the Solar Bears player who has books written about him      Cache   Translate Page

Orlando Solar Bears forward Brady Shaw learned to read as a child with an entire book series written by his mother -- about him!

Now, imagine the shock in a classroom full of young schoolchildren when the 26-year-old hockey player finished reading a copy of "Brady Brady and the Great Rink" and revealed, “Yep, that’s me!”

As the Solar Bears prepared for their upcoming School Day Game on Nov. 6, Shaw and several of his teammates visited Foundation Academy in Winter Garden in late October to read to classrooms of young children who will be attending the 10:30 a.m. game against the Jacksonville Icemen.

Shaw naturally chose to read "Brady Brady and the Great Rink," one of the 15 titles in the "Brady Brady" series and his personal favorite.

While most of the stories in the popular book series are largely fictional -- no, Shaw never actually built a hockey rink in his backyard -- they draw their inspiration from his love of ice hockey as a child. Since 2004, the "Brady Brady" series has sold nearly 500,000 books.

Creating 'Brady Brady'

The genesis of "Brady Brady" was prompted when Shaw's mother, Mary, wanted to find a way to get her energetic 5-year-old son interested in reading after noticing a lack of sports-themed books geared toward young children.

“He was always in the basement, playing mini-sticks, or in the driveway, taking shots on net,’’ Mary Shaw told the Orlando Sentinel. “Then, I would drag him into the bookstore and the library and beg him to pick out a book. He would come out empty-handed.’’

She decided to take matters into her own hands.

“Growing up, I wasn’t much of a reader, so my mom started writing them as a hobby to get me more involved in books,” Brady Shaw explained. “She knew my interests were in sports, and hockey specifically, so she was able to write a couple of books and get me hooked.”

After Mary Shaw wrote an initial manuscript and paired it with illustrations from artist Chuck Temple, a meeting with representatives from Stoddart -- Canada’s largest publisher at the time -- resulted in a four-book deal, and from there, the series took off. Even after a scare when Stoddart filed for bankruptcy protection, Mary Shaw and Temple reacquired the rights to the series and formed their own publishing company, Brady Brady Inc.

From there, the series has resulted in a published list of 15 titles in hockey (12), baseball (2) and football (1), all featuring Brady Shaw’s always-smiling, illustrated doppelgänger – with the 16th book in the series due out next year.

That’s you?

What’s the fallout of being the inspiration for a famous book series?

As Brady Shaw progressed through youth hockey and eventually made it to the college ranks before turning pro within the Colorado Avalanche pipeline last season, his quasi-celebrity status had become a natural ice-breaker in the locker room and has helped Shaw bond with new teammates.

“[Solar Bears defenseman] Mike Monfredo doesn’t let me forget it much these days,” Shaw said with a smile.

In some instances, it’s a mind-blowing experience for Shaw's teammates when the realization that the Brady they’ve been skating with is the Brady Brady they read about as a child.

Solar Bears forward Colby McAuley was an avid reader of the series as a child and routinely made the book a must-buy whenever his school hosted a book fair.

“I’d get them and bring the books home,” McAuley said. “The next time I’m home, I’ll have to try and find them and have Brady autograph them. Growing up in a hockey family, that was one of the books you’d read as a young kid. Knowing who he is now, it makes the books even better.”

More importantly, the books have given Shaw a chance to connect with young members of the community. He’s given countless school visits in his hockey career, each geared toward helping children discover the magic of reading.

“I enjoy the visits,” Brady said. “It’s a way to give back, and to see the smile on a kid’s face, it make me feel young again.”

LA Clippers push women's empowerment with dating app deal      Cache   Translate Page

In the era of #MeToo a dating app has teamed up with a high-profile sports team to "shake up" a predominantly male-driven industry.

In March, the Los Angeles Clippers broke ground by signing a reported three-year $20 million sponsorship deal with "female empowerment" dating app Bumble, where women initiate contact with men.

The partnership launched with a #strongerwithher campaign at a Clippers game -- encouraging fans to honor women who impact their lives.

"There is a lot of fear that women are having in a time that women should have a voice, and having men who support that is incredibly important for us as women," Alex Williamson, Bumble's chief brand officer, told CNN Sport.

"That's what we're trying to do. I think the ripple effects of that are very powerful. It's really important to showcase the good guys," according to Williamson.

The Clippers -- who hired Gillian Zucker as president of business operations in 2014, one of a small but growing number of women in the top ranks of US sports -- are keen to promote their equality-driven message through the deal.

"This is a female empowerment brand and you are putting that brand on a men's sport's league jersey," Clippers' chief global partnerships officer Scott Sonnenberg told CNN sport. "That in itself is a story."

The deal places the dating app's logo as a patch on the Clippers' uniform, but extends beyond just that, according to Sonnenberg,

"With Bumble we have core values that are alike," he says, noting that the companies have worked on mentorship programs and creative programs for women in Los Angeles.

Although Bumble is best known for its dating app, it also features platforms for forming business contacts and friendships.

"We just thought it was a natural fit to open a partnership together for a common goal," added Sonnenberg.

'We don't focus on the Lakers'

Sonnenberg, who is responsible for building relationships with corporate sponsors, recently moved to the Clippers after 14 years with the Chicago Bulls, a team that consistently led the NBA in home attendance.

He was attracted by the chance to work for Clippers owner and Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer.

"Steve Balmer wants to be the first at everything," he says. "(He is) constantly pushing the envelope and challenging his executive team to do more and be better, and that is the kind of leader I was interested to learn from."

Sonnenberg will have his work cut out.

The Clippers' fan base has ebbed and flowed in its fourth decade in Los Angeles -- save for superfan Clipper Darrell -- and trading away Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan along with Blake Griffin over the past two seasons leaves the team without a single marquee player.

Meanwhile, their arena-mates at the Staples Center, the Los Angeles Lakers, acquired megastar LeBron James. How can the Clippers compete with that?

"Having a superstar in Los Angeles is not foreign," Sonnenberg says. "We don't focus at all on what the Lakers are doing, they are a great brand and a great organization.

"It's certainly challenging, there are a lot of professional teams in LA and that makes it difficult to stand out for us."

To help strengthen their identity the Clippers plan to build their own arena in the Inglewood section of Los Angeles.

"Steve (Balmer) has been very vocal about that," adds Sonnenberg. "Part of building our fan base is having our own home."

So far, the Clippers are still "exploring the possibility" of building the arena, which would open after its lease at the Staples Center expires in six years.

In the meantime, the Clippers, who missed the playoffs last season, need to put together a competitive team, Sonnenberg admits.

"With (experienced NBA executive) Jerry West and (coach) Doc Rivers and (basketball operations head) Lawrence Frank at the helm, we feel like we have the right people in place to help bring a championship team to LA," he says.

He cites the team's salary cap flexibility to sign free agents who come available after this season as something for Clippers fans to look forward to.

"We're more focused on what we're trying to do, and what we're trying to do is build a championship caliber team," he says.

Opportunities Abound If Israel and Gulf Nations Cooperate       Cache   Translate Page
(Arab News-Saudi Arabia) Dr. Ellen R. Wald - Gulf countries who choose to work with Israel could gain an advantage over those who do not. After all, Israel has the Middle East's most dynamic economy, best higher education system and a cultural experience that aligns easily with the rest of the region. As Egypt, Jordan and other groups have benefited from relationships with Israel, Gulf countries could find even more opportunities. In the last seven years the number of Arab students at Israeli universities has grown by 78.5%, according to Israel's Council for Higher Education. Today, 16.1% of students at Israeli universities are Arab. The writer teaches Middle East history and policy at Jacksonville University.

6 November 1933: Dr. Simon Hertz      Cache   Translate Page

November 6, 1933
Luxembourg

On this day Simon HERTZ is admitted to practice medicine in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. He is a descendant of a Hertz (also Herz) family of the Jewish faith, from the Trier, Germany area who settled in 1846 in Christnach, Luxembourg, later relocating to Waldbillig, Luxembourg, where he is born on July 14, 1907. An orphan at an early age, he is able to pursue studies in medicine in Paris, France, thanks to the help of relatives. As Nazi Germany invades Luxembourg on May 10, 1940, Dr. Simon Hertz flees Luxembourg and practices medicine for a while in Southern France. He arrives in New York on April 16, 1942, aboard the SS Guiné from Casablanca, Morocco. His destination in the USA is his cousin, Nathan Hertz. In the United States he repeats all medical exams as he becomes an American citizen. In August of 1943, Dr. Hertz volunteers in the US-Army and serves until the end of the war, being promoted to the rank of Captain of the 179th General Hospital. He is honorably discharged on September 11, 1946 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He remains in the United States until 1948, then returns to Europe and practices medicine in the city of Luxembourg. Doctor Simon Hertz passes away on August 9, 1983 in Crans-sur-Sierre, Switzerland.

          (Jacksonville) Smith & Wesson Model 625-2 - $ 1,250      Cache   Translate Page
I have for sale a beautiful original Smith & Wesson Model 625-2 45acp stainless steel revolver.

Specifications
Manufacture - Smith & Wesson
Model - 625-2 Model of 1989
Caliber - 45acp
Barrel - 3" Adjustable Sights with full lug
Finish - Stainless Steel
Condition - Gun was manufactured in 1989 according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson and it comes in a hard blue factory Smith & Wesson box which is not original to the gun. This gun is in pristine condition for a 29 year old gun. Gun has been stored in a climate controlled safe. The model of 1989 revolvers are somewhat rare in that they do not surface very often, especially one this nice and in a 3 inch barrel. It appears to have been a safe queen rather than a shooter. The stainless steel finish is in excellent condition. I can't remember ever firing this gun so I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. Lock up is very tight and bore is pristine.

If you need any additional information or pictures please do not hesitate to ask. Contact me at jwkpatrick at yahoo.com. Shipping is a flat $50.00 fully insured and the gun will be shipped from my FFL dealer to your FFL of choice. Buyer is responsible for complying with all Federal, State and Local laws concerning firearms. NO shipments to California. Payment may be made by money order or cashiers check. NO Paypal or Credit Cards. Not interested in any trades.

If you are local and want to inspect the gun in person we can do that also.

If this is listed, it is still available.

The Hurry Up: Safety Brian Branch Discusses OSU Offer, Buckeyes Send Out Two More Offers And An Introduction To 2021 Florida Safety Terrell Tutt      Cache   Translate Page
The Hurry Up is your nightly dose of updates from the Ohio State football recruiting trail, keeping tabs on the latest from commits and targets from around the country.
BRANCHING OUT

Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Alex Grinch gives Sandy Creek (Tyrone, Ga.) safety Brian Branch a call every week. But this week's conversation between the two sounded different than all the others.

Around 8:30 Monday night, Grinch dialed Branch's number and had an offer ready.

"It caught me by surprise because he calls me every week and I didn’t think this was the week he was going to offer. I was shock. I was speechless for like a minute," Branch said.

The offer is far from Branch's first. He also has interest from Louisville, Georgia Tech and South Carolina. Currently, 247Sports doesn't have a ranking for Branch. He's a 6-foot, 175-pound prospect in the class of 2020.

Over the summer, Branch attended a camp at the University of South Carolina, where he received his offer from the Gamecocks. He's also been on visits to Indiana and Georgia Tech ... and plans to be in Columbus soon.

"I haven’t been on any visits [to Columbus] yet but I hope to attend the Michigan game," he said. "I’m just looking for a coaching staff to actually care for you and can set you up in the long run."

Branch's recruiting process seems to be ramping up and the Ohio State offer should put in an express lane for others major programs to start calling. Branch is ready for it.

"I love everything about football, especially playing in big games where the crowd is into it," he said. "You work your whole life for that exact moment. It’s a blessing."

BUCKEYES SEND OUT TWO ADDITIONAL OFFERS

Branch wasn't the only prospect to receive a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes Monday.

Myers Park (Charlotte, N.C.) quarterback Drake Maye and Northmont (Ohio) linebacker Jestin Jacobs also announced offers from Ohio State.

Maye is in the class of 2021 and is considered a pro-style quarterback. He's listed at 6-foot-3, 180 pounds and is a legacy at North Carolina, where his father Mark played. The Tar Heels have offered May, as well as Tennessee and West Virginia.

He throws to wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad III, who was in Columbus alongside Maye this past weekend for unofficial visits.

As for Jacobs, the in-state outside linebacker is a four-star prospect that's currently committed to Iowa. Jacobs gave the Hawkeyes his pledge on May 11.

He's ranked as Ohio's 12th-best overall recruit in the class of 2019 and as the nation's 18th-best prospect at his position. He'll attend the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 5, 2019, alongside many Ohio State targets and commits.

AN INTRODUCTION TO FLORIDA SAFETY TERRELL TUTT

Sunday afternoon, Trinity Christian (Jacksonville, Fla.) running back Marcus Crowley flipped his commitment from Miami to Ohio State. Crowley is just the latest Floridian to commit to the Urban Meyer and company as the Buckeyes already boast of Shaun Wade and Tyreke Johnson on their roster — who are both from Jacksonville.

Terrell Tutt, a 2021 safety at Sandalwood High School — also in Jacksonville, seeing a trend? — would love to join that group of names.

Tutt is a 5-foot-9, 150-pound safety, with room to grow. His name is starting to trickle into multiple recruiting circle as he's been on early visits to Georgia Tech and FIU. He was also recently invited to the 2019 National Combine, in association with the All-American Bowl.

The National Combine features 600 of the nation's top underclassmen. Multiple scouting organizations, including 247Sports, are always in attendance and it gives the athletes one of their first real chances to make an impact. So, you might start to see Tutt's name more.

"I have taken visits to schools and, so far, my favorite has been Georgia Tech because of the area that’s around it [Atlanta]," Tutt told Eleven Warriors. "I plan to take plenty more and Ohio Sate would definitely be a top consideration."

While Tutt said he hasn't been in contact with Ohio State, he'd definitely welcome a call.

"I most definitely have an interest in Ohio State because of the coaching staff and the defensive backs the school produces," Tutt said. "But I would definitely like to talk to Ohio State on a personal Level."

For what it's worth, Tutt — who feels his best on-field skills are his vision, patience, technique and sense of attack — has been in brief contact with Crowley.

"We don’t know each other personally but we have talked and messaged each other," Tutt said. "His commitment does influence others [in the area] because he shows what it takes to get to that level, to a school such as Ohio State."

What It's Like to Live in a Hurricane's Destruction After the World Stops Caring      Cache   Translate Page

Hurricanes are nothing new to the Florida Panhandle. A lot of people around Panama City, where I live, consider hurricane season a fifth season that falls somewhere in between Summer and Fall. When the news stations go haywire, we throw hurricane parties and stock up on booze and snacks. We roll our eyes and snicker because we know that we'll get a few days off from work and have some extra bonding time with our friends. Worst-case scenario, we lose power for a day or two and see a few street signs blown down.

With the exception of Hurricane Opal in 1995, Bay County's track record has been good for so long that I often wondered when our lucky streak would finally end. I never could have imagined that when it did, it would be this detrimental.

If I were to make a guess, I'd say that 90 percent of all Bay County residents did not evacuate for Hurricane Michael. That's close to 170,000 people who endured winds peaking at 155 MPH.

In less than 20 hours, the storm went from cautionary to life altering.

Judging from afar, people will probably question our decision to stay. They might even go as far as to say it's our own fault. But what most people don't realize is that our City Center was not ordered to evacuate. Only the areas in threat of storm surge were - primarily our beach and anyone living in mobile homes. The irony is that most of our beach residents evacuated inland to Panama City, and Panama City was demolished.

Also, keep in mind that Hurricane Michael underwent major changes between 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, and 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct 10, and was upgraded from a category 2 to a category 4 storm. By the time it made landfall about 12:30 p.m., it was one notch away from being a category 5. In less than 20 hours, the storm went from cautionary to life altering. It changed so quickly that it was too late for people to get out. The hurricane's force was compared to a massive EF3 tornado (the third most devastating tornado). In terms of pressure, Hurricane Michael is the third most intense hurricane to hit the mainland United States, after Hurricane Camille in 1969 and an unnamed Labor Day hurricane in 1935.

In Panama City, we were fighting to survive while the rest of the world was back to business as usual.

My neighborhood was hit hard, just as hard as my mother-in-law's, my parents', my best friend's, my third grade teacher's. There wasn't an area of our city that wasn't heavily impacted. My family (four adults, one 4-year-old child, and two dogs) rode out the storm in my 1,400-square-foot home. It was terrifying, to say the least. Trees crashed around us, the walls shook with fury, and the wind whistled in our ears like a freight train. If we lost our roof, we devised a plan to sit in my car, which was parked under my carport. It wasn't much of a plan, but it was all we had. We got lucky and didn't lose our roof.

I later discovered that my friend, who lives one street over, did. She, her husband, their 5-year-old, and their 18-month-old huddled in their car during the worst part of the storm after their roof had collapsed. Another friend of mine lost her roof along with the safety of her car. She had no choice but to run outside, into flying debris, falling trees, and monstrous winds, to take cover at their neighbors' across the street. My friend Christy and her husband were trapped inside their home for three days after the storm with their 2-month-old and their toddler. By the time they were rescued, they were down to one bottle of water and no ice. The horror stories are endless.

Overnight, our town was transformed into a weather-beaten war zone. The first week of living in post-Michael conditions felt like living in apocalyptic times. I expected zombies to appear at any moment.

Overnight, our town was transformed into a weather-beaten war zone.

We had no running water, meaning we couldn't flush the toilets. We couldn't wash our hands, either; we had to ration the bottled water we had left for other things - like drinking. After the storm, we moved to my parents' house, where there is a pool. We often rinsed our hands in the black, murky, possibly snake-infested pool water, and then we used hand sanitizer to kill the germs. We obviously had no power, and no power means no air conditioning in 100-degree Florida weather. It also meant no street lights, no home lights, no refrigerators, and no way to charge our cell phones. Not that cell phones were of much use: more than 60 percent of all Bay County residents were left with zero wireless service. We had no way of contacting one another to see who was OK and instead drove around looking for loved ones. But driving around was dangerous, and there was no gas to refill the tank, so we couldn't drive far. If you were lucky enough to have a generator, you didn't have enough gas to run the thing. There was zero access to health care: our hospitals and clinics were demolished, and nurses and doctors were trapped inside their own homes.

But perhaps the scariest part of living in a city that is smashed to hell is the looters. A high percentage of homes were highly exposed to looters because they had no roofs and broken windows. There weren't enough authorities to guard every single street, so individuals had to take matters into their own hands, posting signs like "You loot, I shoot" or "weapon strong." One woman had her purse stolen right from her hands when looters trespassed into her home. So many cars were smashed by trees that people were forced to walk around instead of drive, adding to their vulnerability.

For every five people I know, four have lost their homes.

My husband, my son, and I stuck it out for a week, but we finally decided that we'd had enough. We also needed to get my son to a doctor. The day of the storm, he'd developed a nasty cough that was quickly getting worse. We drove five hours to Jacksonville to get him some medicine and to stay with some friends, hoping to return when things calmed down. Driving out of the wreckage and back into society felt perplexing. One-hundred miles up the road, they had cell service, flushing toilets, functioning restaurants, and gas. In Panama City, we were fighting to survive, while the rest of the world was back to business as usual. We tried to enjoy our time away, but we started to feel like we'd deserted our home. So on day six, we made our way back.

Upon our return, I'm not sure what I expected to see, but somehow leaving the mess and then returning made the reality of the situation truly sink in. Tears trickled down my face as we drove back onto the once-familiar streets that were now unrecognizable. Massive 100-year-old oak trees that once provided so many homes and parks with natural shade were blown to smithereens, their extensive six-foot-wide roots lifted from the earth, disintegrating entire yards. The 50- to 80-foot pine trees that populated every street and every yard were snapped in half, piled into colossal mounds that were so high, they blocked entire homes. Almost every roof carried a new shade of blue: tarps were their only barrier to block any potential rain.

It's been 29 days since Hurricane Michael, and our city is still in shambles. We are eternally grateful to all the linemen who came from all over the country. They restored our power in record time, and because of them, we are able to begin to put the pieces back together. As of now, 98 percent of our county has power and water, but the restoration of power doesn't mean our thriving community has been restored. We have some businesses reopening, but the ratio of open to closed is 1:10. A few grocery stores made it through, but the restaurants are few and far between. Our hospitals are only partially opened, and a massive amount of our clinics were wiped out. Countless doctors, lawyers, and teachers are twiddling their thumbs because they have no place to work. For every five people I know, four have lost their homes. They're either staying with family or have relocated to neighboring counties. Many of our schools are still being used as shelters, because there is no place for the homeless to go. When I use the word "homeless," I'm referring to the people who recently became homeless because of the hurricane.

But I am happy to say that aside from all the destruction, there is a light that shines bright. The old saying applies that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. I've never felt so proud to be a Bay County resident. We have pulled ourselves out of the rubble and, somehow, through all of the mess, managed to hold our heads high. Our community has become a team, and everyone is adopting terms like #850strong and #wewillrebuild. Because we know that Hurricane Michael is not the end of Bay County, it's a new beginning.

Rick Scott Unseats Incumbent Dem Sen. Bill Nelson      Cache   Translate Page
Much like the gubernatorial race in Florida, the contest between Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), a clash of two of the Sunshine State’s political heavyweights, went down to the wire on Tuesday. With 99 percent of the precincts reporting and more than 8 million ballots counted, Scott had a 55,000-plus vote lead over the incumbent Democrat Nelson in his apparent victory. Also much like Ron DeSantis in his contest against Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, Nelson outperformed Scott in Florida’s metropolitan areas of Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Orlando, West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. However, that wasn’t enough to carry Nelson. Scott carried an overwhelming majority of Florida’s counties overall. He will join the state’s soon-to-be senior Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) in the U.S. Senate, where Republicans were able to maintain control in Tuesday’s elections. Follow Jeff Poor on Twitter @jeff_poor

Hurricane Michael Relief Efforts Continue in Florida
Florida disaster relief
AFL-CIO

This is the second installment of AFL-CIO National Media Manager Carolyn Bobb’s documentation of Hurricane Michael relief efforts in the Florida Panhandle. Read the first piece here.

Disaster relief is a long-term commitment that can become more difficult once immediate needs are met. For the Florida AFL-CIO, which is leading Hurricane Michael relief efforts, the work of rebuilding now begins.

“We cannot forget our members. A lot of basic needs have been met and now we’re focusing on getting people back to some sense of normalcy in their lives, which includes getting members back to work,” said Teamsters National Disaster Relief Coordinator Roy Gillespie.

This next stage of recovery, known as Phase 2, is about stabilization, and it focuses on targeted union member outreach. Many people have had a chance to assess the damage to their homes, and now they’re able to begin the cleanup process. That’s where the Florida AFL-CIO team comes in, delivering key supplies like trash bags, bleach and sponges, along with clothes, diapers, laundry detergent and personal items.

The Florida AFL-CIO serves as a command and control center, fielding a constant stream of calls, texts and emails to figure out how to get the thousands of supplies to those most in need. The team also is able to help a key community partner. After receiving notice that a local Red Cross facility had poor lighting, they called Miller Electric Co. out of Jacksonville to assist. Within a few days, the lighting was fixed. This can-do attitude is a constant during this labor-led relief effort.

“Our hearts go out to all of our sisters and brothers and their families during this difficult time,” said Mike Williams, president of the Florida AFL-CIO. “We are going through all the requests for help and getting supplies out to the most impacted communities. Because of all the great volunteers, we’ve been able to coordinate Phase 2 supply distribution in hard-hit areas such as Panama City, Blountstown, Marianna and Wewahitchka.”

We see firsthand the dual lives many union members are living when we make our first Phase 2 delivery to Panama City 15 days after the hurricane hit. Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 624 member Greg Cramer finishes a shift at a nearby mill and then opens up the union hall so we can unload two trucks. He is part worker, part volunteer. It is a blessing to have a place to store and distribute these supplies because the rain is relentless for several hours.

The Phase 2 coordination is led by Executive Assistant Helen Parker of the state federation. Helen is a seasoned disaster relief coordinator, having worked on efforts after Hurricane Irma in 2017 and most recently in North Carolina, still recovering from its own hurricane. Husband and wife team Fred with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and Carol Croon with BESPA—who evacuated and came back to some pretty major house damage—are pros at organizing the supplies and sorting through clothing that has been donated.

The first distribution is a success, and at other sites over the weekend, some 100 families are able to pick up items that will help them get started on the long road to recovery. The Florida AFL-CIO will be there every step of the way. Anyone wanting to make donations may continue to do so through the Florida Workers Relief Fund.

See photos from Phase 2 of the recovery efforts.

Cadeau de Noël      Cache   Translate Page

Bonjour

Bouquins :

Neil Young : "Une autobiographie"
Points

Bruce Springsteen : "Born to run".

Attention, c'est long !

White Ceramic Creamers, Set of 2 Vintage Napcoware by EitherOrFinds      Cache   Translate Page

12.00 USD

These two mid-century vintage white Napcoware creamers or pitchers have a charming, raised embossed pattern of grapes and leaves and beaded detail around the edges. The handles also have great, distinctive detail.

Each creamer measures 3-1/2 inches tall by 4-1/2 inches wide (including handle). The paper Napcoware stickers are missing, but it is identifiable as Napcoware by the C-5467 coding.

The Napcoware company, or National Potteries Corporation, began producing porcelain and glass in 1938 in Bedford, Ohio. Its most prolific production happened during the 1950s and 1960s. Napcoware is prized by collectors because of the attention to design and detail. In 1986 the company moved its headquarters to Jacksonville, Florida.

Not only can the creamers be used as they were meant to be, to serve cream for coffee or tea, but they are lovely filled with flowers. Other uses are filled with brushes, pencils, and pens in the office or studio.

And of course they are a perfect addition to a white china collection, especially in a modern farmhouse or cottage decor.

The creamers are in very good condition except for some slight flea bites around the edges. This, however, is barely noticeable, especially when displayed in a cabinet or shelf.

International buyers, contact me about a shipping price to your country.

Keke Coutee unwilling to rush recovery      Cache   Translate Page
Injury Hamstring injury

Keke Coutee has dealt with strained hamstrings in both legs. He has missed the past two games since injuring his left leg against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The fourth-round draft pick from Texas Tech is improving and practiced on a limited basis last week, but doesn't plan to return until his leg is fully recovered to avoid a setback. "Until I'm 100 percent, I won't be back out there," said Coutee, who has 21 catches for 196 yards and one touchdown. "We're taking it day by day. I'm doing a little bit better every day. I'm definitely taking a little time during the bye." (Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson)

FF Today's Take: It is an understandable position since Coutee has strained both of his hamstrings. A return may not be far off, however, as the rookie practiced on a limited basis last week. With Houston on bye in Week 10, owners should assume Coutee will be questionable for Week 11 against the Redskins. DeAndre Hopkins and, to a lesser extent, Demaryius Thomas should see the majority of targets until the rookie returns.
Hartford Opera Theater Presents: New In November 9      Cache   Translate Page

Hartford Opera Theater will offer New in November 9, a collection of short operas and opera excerpts. This opera festival will play Sunday, November 18 (7pm) at The Cathedral House at Christ Church Cathedral, 45 Church Street, Hartford, CT. Tickets are available now at https:// www.hartfordoperatheater.com as well as at the door; $10 students and seniors and $20 general admission.

New in November 9 will feature these operas:

A Bridge for Three by Nathan Fletcher (Libretto: Megan Cohen) Inspired by the real life story of an 1897 daredevil who jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge with homemade wings and survived, A Bridge for Three looks at three New Yorkers from three different historical eras who encounter each other in the midst of a shared plunge off the bridge..The three characters are Jimmy James (1897), professional daredevil, Roland Archister (1929), business tycoon and father, and Molly, a teenage girl from the present day.

Excerpt from The Loathly Lady by Paul Richards (Libretto: Wendy Steiner) This opera is based on the Wife of Bath's Tale by Chaucer, and features a Knight who visits different literary characters throughout history to answer the eternal question: What do women want? In the two scenes presented, the Knight visits with Titania and Oberon from A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Sheherazade.

Excerpt from Coal Creek by Dawn Sonntag Coal Creek was a gold mining community in remote east-central Alaska during the 1920s. The opera is based on the actual historical facts and characters as described in Douglas Beckstead's A World Turned Upside Down: The History of Coal Creek. Both scenes take place in Frank Slaven's roadhouse; Slaven was one of the first miners to come to Coal Creek.

Nathan's short film collaboration with writer/ director Adam Taylor, Someone Like Me (L'opera di Facebook), has been described as a "must-see" (Jenna Simeonov, Schmopera), and "...amazing... Charming, dirty, irreverent, and a ton of fun" (Peter Szep, co-founder, New York Opera Alliance). Tony Solitro, Composer Tony Solitro composes concert and stage music that is "fraught with tension" and "amusingly intricate." Politics, history, literature, drama, and visual art inspire his compositions. Examples from recent projects include: No More in Darkness, a meditation on Alexandra David-Neel's pioneering journey to Tibet; More Beautiful Than Night, a cycle of gay love songs interweaving romance, sensuality, and humor; living- despite | living-against, incorporating the syncopated rhythms of protest chants; and Les Bouteilles de la Table Ronde, a surrealist drinking song for women, integrated within a mixed-media installation.
"Delightfully executed with sidesplitting hilarity," Tony's mythology-infused comedy Triangle will be presented during the National Opera Association's 2019 Conference in Salt Lake City as one of three finalists for the Dominick Argento Chamber Opera Competition. Commissioned by Boston Opera Collaborative and premiered in partnership with Boston New Music Initiative, it was hailed "a standout favorite" and praised for its "spiky, smashing, blasting" orchestrations (the Intelligencer). In his 2016 vignette She's Fabulous-a "wonderfully humorous" satire featuring two bitter opera divas-Solitro conjured "spastically dramatic and emotionally volatile music... juxtaposing lush arias with brisk recitatives" (the Intelligencer).

Awarded the Grand Prize in the David Walter Composition Competition (International Society of Bassists), Tony's string quintet Shadow Confrontations was composed for bassist Joseph Conyers (Assistant Principal, Philadelphia Orchestra) and recorded with the Daedalus Quartet. He was awarded fellowships and artist residencies at Yaddo, Brush Creek, Kimmel Harding Nelson, VCCA, and the Brevard Music Center. He earned his Ph.D. as a recipient of the George Crumb Music Fellowship from the University of Pennsylvania and his M.M. from the Longy School of Music on a Nadia and Lili Boulanger Scholarship.
