Masters degree worth it for career switch?      Cache   Translate Page
What is the feasibility of switching into a new (tech/engineering) career by getting a masters degree in it? How much does quality of school matter? Or is it kind of a waste of time?

I recently went back to school and completed a BS in applied math. Now I'm working in a field which I don't love at all and wondering what I can do to potentially get out.

I'm wondering if it would be worth it to get a masters degree at one of the local state schools (Cal State Northridge or LA; though I would happily apply to better schools in the area like UCLA if I thought I had a chance of getting in). I would aim for something tech-y, either engineering (leaning toward civil or EE) or CS (I know this sounds kind of flighty, but rest assured I'm thinking quite intently on what I want to choose, and am mentioning this more to solicit guidance on prospects on switching into those particular fields when I get the masters). My goal would be to improve my resume so that I could get a skilled tech job where I'm working on technical projects of actual import, rather than what I'm currently doing. I would love to get a building job with LA or one of the surrounding cities, or at a tech company building interesting products/software.

I've thought about going for an MBA, but to me that seems more like a degree for people in management, and what I'd love to learn is how to DO something interesting. I've also thought about going to a coding boot camp, but I'm concerned that I wouldn't be able to get a good job AND that I'd be siloed away from good positions due to a lack of a real CS degree. I've ALSO thought about getting a masters in something more personally edifying than useful (English, poli sci, or a foreign language), but I'm not sure that I can justify spending the time or money before I've done something to improve my career prospects.

I did okay at my school (UC Irvine, better than 3.0 GPA), but didn't really build relationships with my professors so don't know if I'd be able to get good letters of recommendation. I would highly prefer to do a part-time masters, but if that's not really a thing I would see about saving money for a year or two to be able to fund going full-time. My biggest regret about getting a math degree is that I don't really do anything with any of the knowledge I learned in school, and it seems like getting a more tech/engineering degree would help to remedy that, as well as provide a path to a career where I also do these interesting things.

Has anyone else done this? Any advice?

NGƯỜI MỸ GỐC CHÂU Á CÓ THỂ BIẾN QUẬN CAM THÀNH BIỂN XANH HAY KHÔNG? (Viet Thanh Nguyen)       Cache   Translate Page

ELECTION DAY 2018 - VOTE YOUR SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS!!      Cache   Translate Page

THE POLLS ARE OPEN TODAY from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

NEW! Use our BFA Voter App to look up candidates on your computer or mobile device: OhioGunVote.com

Election Day is here.

We hear it every two years, "This is the most important election of our lifetime!" Obviously, every election can’t be "the most important." But it can be the most important one to date.

Today is a critical election for Ohio, for the U.S.A, and for freedom-loving gun owners everywhere.

At this point in election cycles, I’m always personally vested in multiple campaigns. There are candidates I’ve worked with and for, gotten to know their campaign staff, often talking to them at all hours of the day and night. Often I’ve also become acquainted with candidate’s family. This week I got a big hug from one of my first candidate’s daughters, who now has a son learning to drive! Such are strong bonds and friendships formed on the campaign trail.

But this year is different. For the first time I’m nervous about more than a few key elections. I’m scared for the future of our state and nation. It has weighed on me like no other election and, in talking to friends, I know I am not alone.

There are always tight elections, where a tiny percentage of voters make up the margin of victory. Sometimes the difference is only a few (or even just one) vote. This year, there are many elections that are tied, or within the margin of error in the never-ending string of polls.

Real Clear Politics has Sherrod Brown (D) up 6 over NRA & BFA endorsed and "A-rated" Jim Renacci. How is a man who was named the most liberal Senator (understand that is LEFT of Bernie Sanders!!!) representing a right leaning, battleground state like Ohio? How can someone who voted for Trump, or votes for Mike
DeWine/Jon Husted, Dave Yost, Keith Faber, Frank LaRose, Robert Sprague, Craig Baldwin, or Mary DeGenaro also vote for someone further left on the political spectrum than an avowed socialist?!

These are odd political times indeed. But in such odd times, there is incredible opportunity. All of the above races are close enough that gun owners can easily control the outcome if we all go out and vote our rights. But if we stay home, or worse yet vote against our endorsed candidates, we feed the fake news narrative that we are a fringe that can be ignored. We help George Soros and Michael Bloomberg and Everytown and Moms Demand Attention and every other radical "take all your guns" group fund-raise and convince politicians that it is safe for them to take away your right to keep and bear arms or exercise your right to self-defense.

Losses today, will need to be paid back, with interest we don't have. Wins today will bear fruit and return on our investment for years to come. Such is the nature of this election, and being involved in lobbying and legislation for 20 years I know this all too well. This is why I’ve been nervous about this election like none before. This is why I beg of every one of our supporters not just to vote for our candidates, but do encourage all those you know to get out and vote with us.

Ohio has 99 House seats up for election. There will likely be seats swapping from Republican to Democrat, and from Democrat to Republican. Net gain for either party is anyone's guess. Half of the Ohio Senate is up for election. Every race matters.

Please make sure to vote and remind friends and neighbors to vote too. Experts agree that voter turnout will be a deciding factor in many tight races.

Every U.S. Congress seat is up for election. We will not have a chance to dethrone our vehemently anti-gun, anti-freedom, anti-self-defense Senator again until 2024.

Elections matter. Vote for the people that will fight for the things that are important to you. Gun owners could control every race if we voted together. The only reason firearms are still a political issue is because gun owners continue to vote for people who are trying to deny us the right to own and use our guns.

To protect your rights, you must vote for candidates who understand and respect the Second Amendment. And it is vital that you vote in EVERY RACE, including those for local offices.

THE POLLS ARE OPEN TODAY from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

NEW! Use our BFA Voter App to look up candidates on your computer or mobile device: OhioGunVote.com

He is also Board President of Buckeye Firearms Association, and recipient of the NRA-ILA's 2011 "Jay M.           Free CCW Licenses for Military Members      Cache   Translate Page
ccw license for vets

Senate Bill 81, sponsored by Senator Terhar (R-8), was signed into law in August and became effective today, Monday, November 5, 2018.

SB 81 specifies that active duty military and retired and honorably discharged veterans will have their fees waived for initial and renewed Concealed Handgun Licenses (CHLs).

NOTE: This does NOT mean military members can carry concealed without a license. You must still go through the same licensing process, and your fee will be $0.

Veterans are reminded that many sheriff offices still require applicants to bring an approved passport size photograph with their completed application. Sheriffs also vary greatly in the forms of payment they accept. Check with your sheriff’s office to follow their particular rules.

Ohio residents may apply for a CHL in the county of residence, or any adjoining county. Non-residents may apply in the county they work in, or adjacent counties.

There is a statewide cap of $1,500,000 per year for this benefit. This equates to 19,480 to 30,000 licenses depending on the mix of people obtaining or renewing their CHL. (Temporary licenses not considered.) Last year, there were 131,345 licenses issued. Military members would need to exceed 15 - 23% of all licenses for the state to reach the cap.

Military members' training does not expire, so their DD-214 or a statement of accepted training satisfies the requirement for proof of training (minimum 8 hours, including a minimum of 2 hours range time). The requirement for “competency training” was removed years ago, so anyone with an expired license can renew their CHL using their expired license as proof of training.

Military members and veterans are cautioned to review the Attorney General book on concealed carry and use of deadly force. The “rules of engagement” are much different in the military than under Ohio law. In cases of self-defense, Ohio law is different than every other state, and the United States. Hopefully that can be addressed in the coming weeks. See HB 228.

Many of our military members have paid for our freedoms with their lives. Those who are still active, retired, or honorably discharged should not have to pay for a license to exercise their God-given right to self-defense.

Our veterans thank Senator Terhar, Senate President Obhof, Speaker Smith and all members who voted for this legislation.

The Act is only 10 pages. Click here to download SB 81.

Franklin County Sheriffs department has published a video explaining their procedures.

Jim Irvine is Buckeye Firearms Association Chairman, recipient of the NRA-ILA's 2011 Jay M. Littlefield Volunteer of the Year Award and CCRKBA's 2012 Gun Rights Defender of the Year Award.

FROSTKEEP STUDIOS UNVEILS NEW GAME MODES FOR REND      Cache   Translate Page
FROSTKEEP STUDIOS UNVEILS NEW GAME MODES FOR REND Classic and Exploration Modes Debut for Early Testing on the Public Test Realm (PTR) IRVINE, CALIF. – Nov. 6, 2018 – Frostkeep Studios announced today the debut of two new game modes for Rend – Classic and Exploration – on its Public Test Realm (PTR). Both game modes came highly-requested from players and include changes to Research Sparks and Ascension Points. The new game modes were developed in parallel with Rend’s Early Access roadmap features for Fall-Winter and will officially go live this month once initial testing is completed on the PTR. The new modes, Classic and Exploration, will unshackle the world of Rend for players, delivering open-ended gameplay free from pre-established factions and shielded strongholds. Players will be free to weave their own solitary tale in Rend as they encounter other players, deciding whether to remain independent or work collaboratively. Unlike the original game mode – now called Faction War – Ascension through spirit collection will not be a win condition and Reckonings will not occur in the new modes – promoting uninterrupted gameplay on persistent 60-player servers. In Classic, players will be able to battle for supremacy by laying siege to each others’ bases, waging PvP wars, capturing Control Points, and collecting player bounties. While Exploration offers a purely PvE experience, without the ability to attack other players or their bases. Both modes allow players to band together in clans, and all progression is per-character and there will be no reputation system. Spirits remain harvestable, rewarding XP and Spirit Residue – though Yggdrasil’s spirit totals will remain unchanged. The latest update also sees Research Sparks undergo significant changes to facilitate the new modes, but also to improve Faction War’s current format. Sparks will now drop from creatures – with each family offering one of the four types. Ascension Point management will also be updated, moving from a per-server basis to a global tally tied to each player’s account. Ascension Points earned from gameplay in any of the three game modes and Ascension Perk unlocks will now count for all servers. For further details on the new game modes, please visit:  https://www.rendgame.com/news/article/rend-roadmap-survival-game-modes. Or for more information on Rend’s Early Access Roadmap, visit: https://www.rendgame.com/roadmap. For more information about Rend, please visit the game’s official Steam page or www.RendGame.com.

Lucca Comics & Games 2018 – Speciale      Cache   Translate Page

Inkcouragement: Writing In A Hellscape, NaNoWriMo Edition

Please welcome to Inkcouragement stage, author E. Katherine Kottaras (How to Be Brave; The Best Possible Answer), who's here to discuss an unfortunately very timely topic: writing while feeling discouraged by the world around you. Take it away, Katherine!

(Have a candle nearby.)

NaNoWriMo is a fully physical endeavor, requiring not only the bodily space to type 50,000 words in 30 days but also the emotional and psychological energy and strength to pour our stories – our characters’ pains, desires, and loves – our own pain, desire, and love – into a manuscript, and to do it in a self-imposed pressure chamber that binds us into a space that is constricted by time.

This year’s NaNoWriMo pressure chamber has the added variable of the upcoming 2018 U.S. national midterm election, one of the most important elections in history, as well as substantial repercussions that will lead us either further down the path of love, or deeper towards fear and hate. To be fair, the influence of the political hellscape is always there either impacting us directly or existing just outside our writing space, but there are times when, as much as we want to give ourselves the space to create – to dedicate ourselves to our own creative lives (often so we can reflect on how that hellscape is affecting us and figure out how to fight against it) – there are headlines, so many godawful headlines, and it’s impossible – and even more so, unconscionable – to look away.

So then. Here you are. November 5th, and it’s the day before the election. Mandy W.’s told me that many of her friends’ NaNos took a nosedive in 2016 (my writing project did, too – I couldn’t write for six months). She asked me to write about how to stay motivated when everything around you is terrible and your heart's just not in it. It’s an important question, and it leads to more: What do you do on the days when everything is terrible and the words just won’t come? How can you tap into the rage and fury while also making it a space for discovery and healing? What are you doing to keep your creative fires burning strong and bright?

Light the candle.

Offer your gaze at the light. Take a deep breath.

Sit with these words for a moment:

Your rage and fury. Your discovery and healing. Your creative fire.

First, ask yourself: What is fueling your creative fire today?

More often than not, for me, it’s joy. Elizabeth Gilbert writes brilliantly about the myth of the Tormented Artist. She writes that we need not fetishize our suffering, that “my desire to work – my desire to engage with my creativity as intimately and freely as possible – is my strongest personal incentive to fight back against pain.” Like Gilbert, I am at my writing best when I have been going for hikes, eating my daily apple, and sleeping through the night.

But sometimes the fuel is the rage. Especially these days. I spent two weeks straight obsessively watching and listening and reading everything I could on the Kavanaugh hearings. I listened to Dr. Christine Blasley Ford. I observed his temper tantrum. I shed tears at the injustice – which is one of just many injustices of the world.

And then, I turned off the TV, I went off social media, and for two weeks, I wrote. In fact, within a span of 17 days, I wrote the last 15,000 words. (Not quite NaNoWriMo pacing, but that’s a lot for a slow writer like me).

The manuscript I was working on is a feminist alternative historical YA novel about Victoria Woodhull, who was the first woman to run for president in 1872. Woodhull argued against marriage as a form of sexual slavery and for the principles of free love and self- determination for women. She attempted to be the leader of a #MeToo type movement, and so of course, government cronies used her testimony as a way to degrade her, bring ruin to the suffrage movement, and deflect from the reality that was rape culture.

Let’s just say that I RAGE-WROTE the end of this book. I wrote with the awareness that after 146 years, not much has changed. As I did, I kept the following words from Bessel van der Kolk close: “Trauma, by definition, is unbearable and intolerable … Nobody wants to remember trauma. In that regard society is no different from the victims themselves. We all want to live in a world that is safe, manageable, and predictable, and victims remind us that this is not always the case. In order to understand trauma, we have to overcome our natural reluctance to confront that reality and cultivate the courage to listen to the testimonies of survivors.”

Some days, we watch the news and we listen to the survivors, bear witness to the pain; some days, we are the survivors at our own keyboards, facing the unbearable, grappling with the intolerable, pouring our souls onto the page.

Some days, these testimonies are the kerosene.

But also: What is stifling your creative fire?

Some days, the rage is too much. Sometimes the anxiety – the incredible prospect of so many unknowns – is too much. After all, creative fires need air and space.

I teach a combined class of yoga and writing where we work with both the physical and emotional spaces of the writer. In yoga, we play against the edge of our physicality: muscle, bone, organs, blood, pulse. In writing, we play against the edge of consciousness, memory, imagination. The unconscious mind can be terrifying, and yet we make the choice to deal with the darkness rather than block it out completely. When I am writing, I try remind myself that as I play against edges of my writing, I need to take care of myself, that just as in a yoga class, it’s my choice to enter a pose, or not – it’s my choice to explore a memory, write a scene, let myself go there – to spend the next four hours on Twitter, waiting for the most recent poll updates – or not. Our bodies hold stories, and it’s our choice to lean into those spaces, or not.

As you are reading this, maybe, right now, you’re thinking about your WIP and you’ve realized that you need to blow out that candle and walk away. Down the hallway. Out the door. Around the block. For five minutes, or maybe for an hour. Maybe you need to lie down, feet propped up on a pillow, in a dark room with quiet music playing. Maybe you need to watch some Salt Fat Acid Heat (because it’s the best new show on TV) or the newest episodes of The Good Place (Have you seen Chidi’s complete nervous breakdown yet? Peeps Chili FTW!).

Remember, Audre Lorde said, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”

Or maybe you’ve realized that you need to DO something, maybe even something political, like calling your representative, writing postcards, or texting voters. Maybe you need to attend a meeting and help organize to take a stand on an important local city issue that has national and even global reverberations. I find that when I do these things, I feel less isolated, less cynical, and more connected and hopeful – I remember why I write.

And when I do return to the page, I bring to mind the questions: Why have I started writing this story? Who did I light my creative fire for in the first place? What connections did I make, with my own spirit or with others, that I can bring back and infuse into these pages? I was talking to my friend, Akilah Brown, an amazing writer and teacher who is doing NaNoWriMo with her students this semester, and she reminded me that we write because “even if it feels pointless, the world needs your voice and your story.”

Fire requires space to burn.

Give yourself some space.

Some days, your creative fire needs it.

And please, keep writing. The world needs your light.

Brian Kemp Knows Who The Hackers Are, And It's The Democrats Who Warned Him About Hackers      Cache   Translate Page

Georgia's Republican candidate for governor, who also happens to be in charge of running Georgia's election, announced Sunday that he was "investigating" Georgia's Democratic Party for supposedly trying to hack the state's election systems. (Those would be the computer systems he has previously said couldn't possibly be compromised, at least if Russia were doing it.) Now, if you want to get all picky about it, the reality is that Democrats alerted Kemp's office to a security problem in his computer systems, and then he turned around and accused them of "hacking," which really is some impressive fuckery, isn't it?

Kemp's office announced the alleged investigation with a very subtle all-caps headline: "AFTER FAILED HACKING ATTEMPT, SOS LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION INTO GEORGIA DEMOCRATIC PARTY." And then of course the office briefed the press on all the evidence that would warrant such a serious accusation two days before the election, haha we are kidding of course.

What pretty quickly became clear, however, was that Kemp's office was accusing Democrats of "hacking" because they had called attention to a potential security problem with the state's voter registration systems, as the Washington Post explains:

Candice Broce, a spokeswoman for the secretary of state's office, said in an interview that Democrats were in possession of an email with script attached to it that, if launched, could have been used to extract personal voter registration data."

Our position is that these were failed attempts to hack the system," Broce said. "All the evidence indicates that, and we're still looking into it."

Democratic officials, in turn, accused Kemp of "defamatory accusations" and released the email in question, showing that it had been forwarded to a Democratic volunteer by someone not affiliated with the party who was flagging a potential data vulnerability. The volunteer forwarded the email to the party's voter protection director, who shared it with cybersecurity experts, who in turn alerted Kemp's office, they said.

Got that? Someone sent the Dems information about a possible security problem, the volunteer who got the email sent it to an appropriate higher-up, who then had cyber people look at it and take the evidence to to the authorities.

Then the Secretary of State's office accused the people trying to warn about the problem of hacking the election! If Brian Kemp is elected governor, expect witnesses to bank robberies to be accused of being in on the plot, because how else would they know so much about the robbery, huh?

Is there more? Of course there's more! Turns out others have been trying to call attention to the security vulnerabilities too:

Two voting rights attorneys suggested that Kemp launched the probe as a distraction, hours after they told authorities about potential security flaws in the electronic voter systems he is responsible for maintaining.

"We alerted the authorities. We expected Mr. Kemp to take action. We were surprised to see the apparent response to that was accusing [the Democrats] of hacking," David D. Cross, a Washington attorney who is helping sue Georgia to make it use paper ballots, said at a news conference Sunday afternoon.

This sort of shit is nothing new for Kemp, of course: As Wired and Gizmodo both note, Kemp accused the Department of Homeland Security of trying to "hack" Georgia computers in 2016 when in fact a DHS investigation turned up only examples of routine computer traffic. When it comes to actually improving computer security, frankly my dear, Kemp doesn't give a damn.

If you're really hot on getting all the cyber details, they're outlined by WhoWhatWhy, which explains the nature of the security hole:

Just before noon on Saturday, a third party provided WhoWhatWhy with an email and document, sent from the Democratic Party of Georgia to election security experts, that highlights "massive" vulnerabilities within the state's My Voter Page and its online voter registration system.

According to the document, it would not be difficult for almost anyone with minimal computer expertise to access millions of people's private information and potentially make changes to their voter registration — including canceling it.

The article goes on to say several security experts said the registration website code -- which is publicly viewable with any browser's tools -- definitely looked insecure, although of course they didn't test that because doing so would be illegal. Here's one very astonished geek:

"For such an easy and low hanging vulnerability to exist, it gives me zero confidence in the capabilities of the system administrator, software developer, and the data custodian," Kris Constable, who runs a privacy law and data security consulting firm, told WhoWhatWhy. "They should not be trusted with personally identifiable information again. They have showed incompetence in proper privacy-protecting data custodian capabilities."

So Kemp's office rewarded the Dems for their vigilance in protecting the integrity of the vote by accusing them of being evil hackers. Isn't that beautiful? University of California Irvine law school professor and political scientist Richard Hasen writes at Slate,

If this is true, it doesn't show Democrats "hacking" to manipulate election results. It shows Democrats, like many others, pointing out the glaring security flaws in Georgia's voting system. To turn this around and blame Democrats is an act of political chutzpah by an election official on par with nothing else I've seen.

Once the blatant fuckery on the part of Kemp's office became clear, Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams wrote in a statement, "Kemp's false accusations against the Democratic Party of Georgia were nothing more than a pathetic attempt to cover up for his failures," which if you ask us is putting it mildly.

And Kemp's campaign? The bastards tried once again to say they had saved Georgians from some dangerous bad behavior by Democrats, who -- as power-hungry radicals will -- brought the problem to the attention of the authorities:

Ryan Mahoney, Mr. Kemp's campaign spokesman, said in a statement late Sunday that the effort to "expose vulnerabilities" in the voter system was an "act of desperation" by Democrats.

"This was a 4th quarter Hail Mary pass that was intercepted in the end zone," he said. "Thanks to the systems and protocols established by Secretary of State Brian Kemp, no personal information was breached. These power-hungry radicals should be held accountable for their criminal behavior."

Translation: We don't know how to do computer security, but we sure do know how to slime people. Also, everything we know about politics we learned from our Labrador retriever, who assures us she was guarding the meatloaf that somehow ended up on the floor. Or half of it.

Brian Kemp is scum, and his people are scum. Georgia, please vote these bastards out, and for fuckssake elect Democrat John Barrow as the next Secretary of State. Foxes shouldn't be watching the henhouse, and they sure as hell shouldn't be designing the damn thing.

US elections: Democrats seize control of Congress in setback for Trump       Cache   Translate Page

Democrats seized control of the lower house of Congress on Wednesday in the midterm elections, dealing a stern rebuke to Donald Trump almost two years into his polarising, roller coaster presidency.

Fox and NBC television networks called the result in the United States House of Representatives, while confirming expectations that Trump's Republicans will retain control of the Senate.

The verdicts in the House and Senate were based on incomplete results as vote counting continued across the country and some states were still voting in a congressional election cast as an unofficial referendum on Trump.

Trump called his rival in the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, late on Tuesday night and congratulated her on regaining a Democratic majority in the House, congressional staffers said.

Pelosi, currently the House minority leader, will now be the majority leader after the newly elected members take oath.

Her deputy chief of staff Drew Hammill told reporters that Trump also acknowledged Pelosi’s call for bipartisanship in her victory remarks.

The result upends the balance of power in Washington, where Trump has enjoyed an easy ride from Republican dominance of both houses of Congress since his shock election in 2016.

Democrats will now be able to block legislation and light a fire under Trump's feet with investigations of his opaque finances and Russian interference in his 2016 election, and possibly push for impeachment.

Read: Americans elect Muslim women to Congress for the first time

Giddy predictions by Democrats of a so-called "blue wave" landslide in the House were still premature, even if a majority appeared guaranteed.

Trump was watching the results roll in from the White House, where he spent the day holed up with friends and family.

Democrats confident

Americans voted enthusiastically on Tuesday, with long lines quickly forming at polling stations from New York to California and from Missouri to Georgia.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 seats in the 100-member Senate and 36 governorships were up for grabs.

Democrats quickly made important gains in the House, but Republicans defended in crucial races, like incumbent Andy Barr of Kentucky, whose House seat had seemed at risk.

In the Senate, Republican Mike Braun snatched the seat from Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly, but corruption scandal-tainted Senator Bob Menendez saved his seat for the Democrats in New Jersey.

Pollsters, gun shy after getting their 2016 presidential prediction wrong, urged caution.

Trump had fought hard before polling day, crisscrossing the country to claim that Democrats would introduce socialism and making incendiary attacks on illegal immigration that opponents denounced as racist.

Even so, Democrats were highly confident, with Nancy Pelosi, the party's top leader in the House, saying "it's just a question of the size of the victory".

Former vice president Joe Biden, often touted as a possible Democratic candidate to take on Trump in 2020, said he'd have been "dumbfounded" not to win the House.

Results were to continue trickling in through the night, with the last polls closing in Alaska at 0600 GMT on Wednesday.

Buzz on the streets

According to Michael McDonald of the US Elections Project, 38.4 million Americans cast their ballots early ahead of this election, compared with 27.4 million in the 2014 midterm.

And on the streets there was a palpable buzz all day.

"We have already seen huge turnout, people out and about knocking on doors, making sure everybody gets out there, but I think turnout will be very, very high," Democratic candidate Katie Porter, who is running in Irvine, California, against two-term Republican incumbent Mimi Walters, told AFP.

On the other side of the country, in Atlanta, Georgia, voters waited in line for nearly two hours to cast ballots, according to local media reports.

Trump himself noted the energy as he wrapped up a punishing schedule of rallies around the country that were intended to boost Republican candidates — and his own brand heading towards reelection in 2020.

"The midterm elections used to be, like, boring," Trump told a crowd in Cleveland, Ohio, on Monday.

"Now it's like the hottest thing."

Jobs and fear

Voting in Chicago, James Gerlock, 27, a Republican, said he wanted to see more of the soaring economic growth that Trump says is the fruit of his business-friendly policies.

"I am extremely happy with the economy," Gerlock said.

"I just want to keep everything moving, because I'm loving it."

But Democrats have been fired up by anger at Trump's extraordinary attacks over the last few weeks against immigrants, claiming that his opponents seek to throw open the borders to "drug dealers, predators and bloodthirsty MS-13 killers".

Trump has sent soldiers to the Mexican border, threatened to have illegal immigrants shot if they throw stones, and vowed to restrict citizenship rights.

Beto O'Rourke, a charismatic Democrat who lost in a closely watched bid to dethrone Republican Senator Ted Cruz in Texas, told voters that Trump was wrong, describing his state as built from "immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees".

Your Election Day Podcast Playlist      Cache   Translate Page

Congratulations, you made it to Election Day! After months (maybe years?) of Twitter fights and mind-numbing debates on cable news, you’re finally heading to the polls to cast your ballot in one of the most tightly watched midterm elections in modern history.

Voting lines can get long, so we’re here to help you pass the time and stay informed. Below you’ll find a list of 10 Slate podcasts to listen to while you wait at your polling place.

1. The “She’s Running” Edition

Ever since Donald Trump’s election, many women across the country have been angry, to put it mildly. And they’re translating that anger into action: In addition to marching and canvassing, there’s a record number of women seeking political office this year. It’s why The Waves, our podcast on feminism, gender, politics, and culture, released a special episode for the midterms.

This episode, which was a collaboration with Glamour magazine, features Waves regulars Hanna Rosin and Christina Cauterucci talking with Celeste Katz, senior political reporter for Glamour, and Latifa Lyles—vice president of the National Network to End Domestic Violence, member of the D.C. Democratic State Committee, and former Obama administration official.

Listen to the episode here, or get the show via Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, Stitcher, or Google Play.

2. The Meme Midterms

Reporters Will Oremus and April Glaser are bringing you a special episode of If Then, Slate’s podcast about technology, to discuss the midterm elections and the role of Silicon Valley and online media in the American democratic process.

Journalists Kevin Roose from the New York Times and Paris Martineau of Wired join Glaser and Oremus to discuss issues of online speech, misinformation, and election interference. Former White House Deputy Chief Technology Officer Ed Felten also joins the show to look at election security, voting systems, and the very, very outdated tech that we use to cast our ballots.

Listen to this episode here, or get the show via Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, Stitcher, or Google Play.

3. The “Most Important Election of Our Lifetimes Since the Last Election” Edition

For the last 13 years, the Political Gabfest, Slate’s flagship podcast, has been bringing listeners the context and political analysis that really matters, complete with a side of Washington cocktail chatter.

For a deep dive on the midterms, the hosts—John Dickerson of CBS, Emily Bazelon of the New York Times, and David Plotz of Atlas Obscura—speak with David Axelrod, former senior adviser to Barack Obama.

Listen to the episode here, or get the show via Apple Podcasts, Overcast,Spotify, Stitcher, or Google Play.

4. The State of Red-State Democrats

President Trump has wanted to make this election about the caravan, and red-state Democrats are feeling the pressure. So how will Trump’s immigration rhetoric shape close races?

Politics writer Jim Newell joined What Next, Slate’s new daily news podcast, to discuss what lies ahead for Democrats in conservative states.

Listen to the episode here, or find What Next via Apple Podcasts, Spotify, TuneIn, Stitcher, Overcast, Google Play, or iHeart.

5. Political Parties, American Tribes

The U.S. electorate has begun to organize itself by worldview. It’s something explained in the new book, Prius or Pickup?: How the Answers to Four Simple Questions Explain America’s Great Divide, by political scientists Marc Hetherington and Jonathan Weiler.

Last week on The Gist with Mike Pesca, Weiler and Hetherington explained why philosophical differences fall along party lines—and why that might be dangerous for American society in the long term.

Listen to the episode here, or get the show via Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, Stitcher, or Google Play.

6. Democrats Shouldn’t Take Latino Votes for Granted

León Krauze knows Latino voters well. In addition to being a news anchor at the Spanish-language television network Univision and a native of Mexico, he’s co-host of Trumpcast, Slate’s podcast about the 45th president. Last week, he talked with Roberto Suro, a professor of public policy and journalism at the University of Southern California, about the much-buzzed-about Latino vote and the 2018 midterms.

Listen to this episode here, or get the show via Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, Stitcher, or Google Play.

7. Is It Time to Freak Out About Voting?

Dahlia Lithwick talks with Rick Hasen, a Slate contributor and professor of law and political science at University of California–Irvine, about how free and fair the midterm elections will be in light of recent Supreme Court rulings on voting rights.

Listen to the episode here, or get the show via Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, Stitcher, or Google Play.

CAMINHA COMEMORA ARMISTÍCIO DA GRANDE GUERRA      Cache   Translate Page

BlizzCon 2018 – Speciale      Cache   Translate Page
Da Heroes of the Storm, si passa a uno dei giochi di punta: l’MMO World of Warcraft.

A Bridge for Three by Nathan Fletcher (Libretto: Megan Cohen) Inspired by the real life story of an 1897 daredevil who jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge with homemade wings and survived, A Bridge for Three looks at three New Yorkers from three different historical eras who encounter each other in the midst of a shared plunge off the bridge..The three characters are Jimmy James (1897), professional daredevil, Roland Archister (1929), business tycoon and father, and Molly, a teenage girl from the present day.

Excerpt from The Loathly Lady by Paul Richards (Libretto: Wendy Steiner) This opera is based on the Wife of Bath's Tale by Chaucer, and features a Knight who visits different literary characters throughout history to answer the eternal question: What do women want? In the two scenes presented, the Knight visits with Titania and Oberon from A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Sheherazade.

Excerpt from Coal Creek by Dawn Sonntag Coal Creek was a gold mining community in remote east-central Alaska during the 1920s. The opera is based on the actual historical facts and characters as described in Douglas Beckstead's A World Turned Upside Down: The History of Coal Creek. Both scenes take place in Frank Slaven's roadhouse; Slaven was one of the first miners to come to Coal Creek.

Triangle by Tony Solitro (Based on a play by Jane Martin) Arthur and Joyce are in a relationship, but uptight, type A Joyce is jealous of Arthur's admiration for another woman, Aphrodite. Joyce invites Aphrodite to her and Arthur's shared apartment, in an effort to try and ascertain if anything improper has actually happened between Arthur and Aphrodite. CREATIVE BIOGRAPHIES

Megan Cohen, Librettist Megan Cohen is a playwright, opera librettist, performance artist, game writer, and multi-tasker based in San Francisco with 100+ scripts onstage worldwide already under her name. http://plays.megancohen.com

Nathan Fletcher, Composer Nathan Fletcher (b. 1992) is a New York-based composer, arranger, tenor and pianist. In January 2018, his 20-minute chamber opera, A Bridge for Three, written with librettist Megan Cohen and commissioned by the Washington National Opera for its American Opera Initiative Festival, premiered at the Kennedy Center; its score has been described as "melodious [and] neo-Romantic" (Anne Midgette, The Washington Post) and "gorgeous" (Alan Savada, Opera-L). Nathan's short film collaboration with writer/ director Adam Taylor, Someone Like Me (L'opera di Facebook), has been described as a "must-see" (Jenna Simeonov, Schmopera), and "...amazing... Charming, dirty, irreverent, and a ton of fun" (Peter Szep, co-founder, New York Opera Alliance). Selected for numerous festival screenings, Someone Like Me took home the Audience Favorite and Judges' Award prizes at the July 2018 Iron Mule Short Comedy Film Festival in Brooklyn.

Nathan's compositions have been performed around the country at venues and events such as Opera America's National Opera Center in New York, the New York Festival of Song's 2016 NYFOS Next Festival, The Bushnell in Hartford, the American Choral Directors Association's (ACDA) National Symposium on American Choral Music in Washington, D.C., and the 2015 ACDA National Conference in Salt Lake City. His incidental score for The Picture of Dorian Gray, presented in May 2017 at the University of Oxford's Michael Pilch Studio Theatre in the United Kingdom, was praised by Katie Stanton of The Oxford Student as "haunting... [and] genuinely moving throughout."

Nathan's eclectic musical interests inform his arrangements for many types of ensembles. His version of Michel Legrand's classic tune, "Watch What Happens," was premiered by the UConn Jazz Lab Band under the direction of John Mastroianni in April 2015. In March 2017, his choral arrangement of the traditional African-American spiritual, "Deep River," was premiered by the Choir of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York under the direction of Ryan Jackson, and went on to receive its U.K. premiere at the 2017 Festival of Liturgical Music at St Mary's Priory in Abergavenny, Wales, performed by Icosa under the direction of Luke Mather.

A recipient of numerous prizes for excellence in composition, Nathan received an Honorable Mention in the 2017 ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, having been a finalist in 2015 and 2016. Nathan was also a finalist in the American Choral Directors Association's 2014 Brock Student Composition Competition.

Tony Solitro, Composer Tony Solitro composes concert and stage music that is "fraught with tension" and "amusingly intricate." Politics, history, literature, drama, and visual art inspire his compositions. Examples from recent projects include: No More in Darkness, a meditation on Alexandra David-Neel's pioneering journey to Tibet; More Beautiful Than Night, a cycle of gay love songs interweaving romance, sensuality, and humor; living- despite | living-against, incorporating the syncopated rhythms of protest chants; and Les Bouteilles de la Table Ronde, a surrealist drinking song for women, integrated within a mixed-media installation.
"Delightfully executed with sidesplitting hilarity," Tony's mythology-infused comedy Triangle will be presented during the National Opera Association's 2019 Conference in Salt Lake City as one of three finalists for the Dominick Argento Chamber Opera Competition. Commissioned by Boston Opera Collaborative and premiered in partnership with Boston New Music Initiative, it was hailed "a standout favorite" and praised for its "spiky, smashing, blasting" orchestrations (the Intelligencer). In his 2016 vignette She's Fabulous-a "wonderfully humorous" satire featuring two bitter opera divas-Solitro conjured "spastically dramatic and emotionally volatile music... juxtaposing lush arias with brisk recitatives" (the Intelligencer).

Awarded the Grand Prize in the David Walter Composition Competition (International Society of Bassists), Tony's string quintet Shadow Confrontations was composed for bassist Joseph Conyers (Assistant Principal, Philadelphia Orchestra) and recorded with the Daedalus Quartet. He was awarded fellowships and artist residencies at Yaddo, Brush Creek, Kimmel Harding Nelson, VCCA, and the Brevard Music Center. He earned his Ph.D. as a recipient of the George Crumb Music Fellowship from the University of Pennsylvania and his M.M. from the Longy School of Music on a Nadia and Lili Boulanger Scholarship.
