After Irma, After Maria: Caribbean Women Writing the Storms
Saturday, November 17 @ 11:30 am
Room 8301 [Building 8, 3rd Floor)

Modern Caribbean literature captures not just the endemic mismanagement of natural resources and public projects, but also the enduring chasm between promises of progress through major infrastructures and the outcomes of natural disasters for average citizens.

In this panel, four Caribbean writers reflect on the devastation from Hurricanes Irma and Maria to many Caribbean islands whose economies rely on tourism; they pay considerable attention to the Caribbean bodies caught in the crosscurrents of a catastrophic natural history. With Edwidge Danticat (Haiti), Loretta Collins Klobah (Puerto Rico), Tiphanie Yanique (Virgin Islands), and Jessica Pabón-Colón (Puerto Rico).

Unknown Histories of the Caribbean
Saturday, November 17 @ 1:30 pm
Room 8301 [Building 8, 3rd Floor)

This panel will discuss how writers from the Caribbean have attempted to construct alternative images of the present and future from the histories of slavery and colonialism that haunt the Caribbean and its diasporas. In parallel with these invented stories, archival registers give unexpected details of the unknown histories of the Caribbean and allow for scrupulously researched literary works to emerge alongside tales of imagination.

With Natalie Hopkinson (Guyana), author of A Mouth is Always Muzzled; Patrick Bellegarde-Smith (Haiti), author of In the Shadow of Powers; Dantes Bellegarde in Haitian Social Thought; Michael Barnett (Jamaica), author of The Rastafari Movement: A North American and Caribbean Perspective, and Judy Raymond (Trinidad), author of The Colour of Shadows. Moderated by Donna Aza Weir-Soley, author of Eroticism, Spirituality, and Resistance in Black Women’s Writings.

Murder and Mayhem in the Caribbean

Join Marilène Phipps, author of Unseen Worlds; Katia D. Ulysse, author of Mouths Don’t Speak, and Fabienne Josaphat, author of Dancing in the Baron’s Shadow, as they discuss the ways in which their writings respond to cultural presumptions about Haitian identity. The adjustment to a new culture brings forth changes in identity and concept of self. In the case of Haiti, how do these changes affect the motherland – and the Haitian communities of the Diaspora?
In this panel, academics and experts in the literary field will speak to the issue of Haitian migration, racial, gender, and national identity, and ultimately, of life in the balance. With Pauris Jean-Baptiste (writer), Pierre Buteau (historian), Inéma Jeudi (journalist), and Claude Charles (ethnologist). Moderated by Marleine Bastien, Executive Director of FANM

#MeToo Movement in the Afro-Caribbean Communities
Sunday, November 18 @ 5:30 pm
Room 8301 (Building 8, 3rd Floor)

In many African-Caribbean communities, reactions to the #MeToo movement often reflect a lack of adequate thought about abuse; in fact, these reactions can even indicate increasing levels of gender-based violence as a norm. Women brave enough to come out with their ordeals are often silenced or made to face backlash for their choice to demand justice. Academics and writing professionals will discuss the blurry lines between abuse and what is considered “normal” gender relations and “natural”’ male behavior in Haiti and other African-Caribbean countries, and present ideas on ways that literature can support the women in impoverished/conflict countries. With Judite Blanc (research psychologist), Monique Clesca (UN Specialist), Marlene Chouloute-Hyppolite (writer), and Georges Bossous (human rights activist). Moderated by Anaïse Chavenet (literary publicist). [In Haitian Creole with simultaneous interpretation into English]

Lord Gwynplaine

Jean-Bernard Pouy, Patrick Raynal

7.11.2018 9:56

Varhain keskiviikkona 7. marraskuuta laukaistiin Metop-sarjan kolmas satelliitti, joka tuottaa laajasti tietoa ilmakehän kemiasta, ilmanlaadusta ja UV-säteilystä.

Ilmakehän kemian tutkimus tehostuu entisestään, kun Metop-sarjan kolmas satelliitti, Metop-C, laukaistiin avaruuteen Kourousta, Ranskan Guyanasta. Satelliitin mukana olevat GOME-2- ja IASI-instrumentit täydentävät ja jatkavat jo 11 vuotta kestänyttä seurantaa. Pian käytössä on yhtäaikaisesti kolme paria identtisiä instrumentteja, joilla kerätään kattavasti tietoa ilmakehän kemiasta.

Suomen rooli on siten keskeinen pitkien ilmakehän kemiaa kuvaavien satelliittiaikasarjojen tuottajana.

GOME-2-aerosolimittaukset näyttävät selvästi, kuinka syksyn 2018 Kalifornian metsäpaloista lähteneet savut kulkivat Pohjois-Amerikan ja pohjoisen Atlantin yli, kunnes saapuivat Eurooppaan ja Suomeen saakka. Kuva on otettu 25. elokuuta 2018.

Tietoa kerätään kolmella satelliitilla yhtä aikaa

Ensimmäinen Metop-sarjan satelliitti, Metop-A, laukaistiin vuonna 2007.

It is a collection of 30 extremely wry and witty short stories written by the inimitable Saki (the pen name for H.H. Munro). The setting is in the midst of upper class English society during the Edwardian Period, the period between the Boer War and World War when the British Empire reached it's peak. Devotees of Downton Abbey will find themselves on familiar ground, save for the slightly disconcerting presence of Clovis. Clovis Sangrail, the nominal central character about whom these stories revolve, is a typical Saki hero: young, vain, effete, worldly, slightly cruel, a bit decadent and extremely witty. Included in this collection are some of Saki's very best works, including "Mrs. Packleetide's Tiger", "The Background", "The Jesting of Arlington Stingham", "Tobermory", "Sredni Vastar", "The talking-Out of Tarrington", "Filboid Studge" and "The Secret Sin of Septimus Brope". Both Saki, and the world about which he wrote so well, came to an end during with World War I. Nevertheless, few writers have ever been able to achieve Saki's level of irony, satire, wit and sophistication. It was a terrible loss, both to Britain and the reading public everywhere, when Saki was killed on the Western Front in 1916. ---End Quote--- 168 pp. *The Scarlet Pimpernel* by Baroness Orczy Public Domain in the US and Life+70. The year is 1792. The French Revolution, driven to excess by its own triumph, has turned into a reign of terror. Daily, tumbrels bearing new victims to the guillotine roll over the cobbled streets of Paris.... Thus the stage is set for one of the most enthralling novels of historical adventure ever written. The mysterious figure known as the Scarlet Pimpernel, sworn to rescue helpless men, women, and children from their doom; his implacable foe, the French agent Chauvelin, relentlessly hunting him down; and lovely Marguerite Blakeney, a beautiful French exile married to an English lord and caught in a terrible conflict of loyalties--all play their parts in a suspenseful tale that ranges from the squalid slums of Paris to the aristocratic salons of London, from intrigue on a great English country estate to the final denouement on the cliffs of the French coast. There have been many imitations of The Scarlet Pimpernel, but none has ever equaled its superb sense of color and drama and its irresistible gift of wonderfully romantic escape. ---End Quote--- 275 pp. *The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry* by Gabrielle Zevin Amazon US: $9.04 | UK, CA, AU From Goodreads: ---Quote--- A. J. Fikry's life is not at all what he expected it to be. His wife has died; his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history; and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. Slowly but surely, he is isolating himself from all the people of Alice Island—from Chief Lambiase, the well-intentioned police officer who's always felt kindly toward him; from Ismay, his sister-in-law, who is hell-bent on saving A.J. from his dreary self; from Amelia, the lovely and idealistic (if eccentric) Knightley Press sales rep who persists in taking the ferry to Alice Island, refusing to be deterred by A.J.'s bad attitude. Even the books in his store have stopped holding pleasure for him. These days, he can only see them as a sign of a world that is changing too rapidly. And then a mysterious package appears at the bookstore. It's a small package, though large in weight—an unexpected arrival that gives A.J. the opportunity to make his life over, the ability to see everything anew. It doesn't take long for the locals to notice the change overcoming A.J., for the determined sales rep Amelia to see her curmudgeonly client in a new light, for the wisdom of all those books to become again the lifeblood of A.J.'s world. Or for everything to twist again into a version of his life that he didn't see coming. ---End Quote--- 260 pp. *The Water Rat of Wanchai (The Deadly Touch of the Tigress)* by Ian Hamilton AmazonUS (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I1WAHR0) $9.99 | AmazonCA (https://www.amazon.ca/Water-Rat-Wanchai-Ava-Book-ebook/dp/B00IOW9ZAW) $7.93 | AmazonUK (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Deadly-Touch-Tigress-Ava-Lee-ebook/dp/B005KKWBVQ) £2.99 | AmazonAU (https://www.amazon.com.au/Deadly-Touch-Tigress-Ava-Lee-ebook/dp/B005KKWBVQ) $12.99 ---Quote--- Winner of the Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel A CBC Bookie Award: Mystery and Thriller, Finalist A Quill & Quire Book of the Year An Amazon.ca Editors’ Pick In the first electrifying book of the series, Ian Hamilton introduces us to Ava Lee — the smartest, most stylish heroine in crime fiction since Lisbeth Salandar. In exchange for his help, he decides he wants a piece of Ava’s $5 million action and will do whatever it takes to get his fair share . . ---End Quote--- 400 pp. *Bedelia *by Vera Caspary Amazon U.S. (https://smile.amazon.com/Bedelia-Femmes-Fatales-Vera-Caspary-ebook/dp/B009KSJZF4/), $9.99 | Amazon CA (https://www.amazon.ca/Bedelia-Femmes-Fatales-Vera-Caspary-ebook/dp/B009KSJZF4/) $8.99 | Amazon UK (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bedelia-Femmes-Fatales-Vera-Caspary-ebook/dp/B009KSJZF4/), £8.63 | Amazon AU (https://www.amazon.com.au/Bedelia-Femmes-Fatales-Vera-Caspary-ebook/dp/B009KSJZF4/) $15.44 | Kobo U.S. (https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/bedelia-4) $11.19 | Kobo CA (https://www.kobo.com/ca/en/ebook/bedelia-4) $15.19 | Kobo UK (https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/bedelia-4), £8.63 | Kobo AU (https://www.kobo.com/au/en/ebook/bedelia-4) $16.71 ---Quote--- Long before Desperate Housewives, there was Bedelia: pretty, ultra femme, and "adoring as a kitten." A perfect housekeeper and lover, she wants nothing more than to please her insecure new husband, who can't believe his luck. But is Bedelia too good to be true? A mysterious new neighbor turns out to be a detective on the trail of a "kitten with claws of steel"—a picture-perfect wife with a string of dead husbands in her wake. Caspary builds this tale to a peak of psychological suspense as her characters are trapped together by a blizzard. The true Bedelia, the woman who chose murder over a life on the street, reveals how she turns male fantasies of superiority into a deadly con. ---End Quote--- ---Quote--- "Vera Caspary's gift was perhaps more subtle, and deadly [than Jim Thompson, David Goodis, and Charles Willeford]." --Robert Polito, author of Savage Art: A Biography of Jim Thompson "You must read Bedelia to see just how slick Miss Caspary's techique of soft-shoe terror can be--how frightening she can make the chatter at an innocent dinner party, the lure of a lady's deshabille, the glimpse of a black pearl in a dresser drawer." --The New York Times "A sinister entertainment 'especially for admirers of the psychological horror story.'" --The New Yorker "A tour de force of psychological suspense, Desperate Housewives meets Double Indemnity in Caspary's Bedelia." --Liahna Armstrong, President Emerita, Popular Culture Association ---End Quote--- 240 pp. *Wild Strawberries* by Angela Thirkell Faded Page (https://www.fadedpage.com/showbook.php?pid=20160420): Free | US$5.99, AU$12.99, UK £3.99 ---Quote--- Deliciously funny, to use a Thirkellism. This book is absolutely perfect to read when you are feeling glum and under the weather -- it will make you laugh out loud. The upper-class characters at its centre are ridiculously wonderful, all so self-absorbed that they pay no attention to other people and are constantly getting hold of the wrong end of the stick. Lady Emily's attempts to organise everyone and everything are sensibly ignored by the lower-class characters who actually get things done. The bunch of French royalists seemed a bit of a bizarre idea, but just added to the joyful chaos. I think my favourite scene was the lunch in the restaurant with David, Joan and Mary -- sparks fly from Thirkell's pen in a positively Austenish way. ---End Quote--- ---Quote--- A summer at an English Country-house in the 1930s, with all the accompanying silliness and minor inconveniences and class issues that one might expect from such a setting. It is laugh-out-loud funny: there is a wonderfully irreverent joy in the foibles, idiocies, and innocent pleasures of minor gentry. ---End Quote--- 227 pp.
50th Anniversary of Shirley Chisholm’s Election      Cache   Translate Page
Today is the 50th anniversary of Shirley Chisholm’s election to Congress as the first African American woman. Chisholm represented Brooklyn, New York in a district that was newly reapportioned and was majority African American and Hispanic. She served seven terms in Congress and ran for president. Shirley Chisholm was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1924 to two immigrant parents from Guyana and Barbados. Chisholm started her career as a nursery school teacher and earned a master’s degree in early childhood education from Columbia University in 1951. In 1960 she became a consultant to the New York City Division of Day Care and in 1964 she became the second African American to serve in the New York State Legislature. Four years later a new Congressional district was created in Brooklyn, inspiring Chisholm to run for Congress with the campaign slogan “Fighting Shirley”. In Congress she continued to fight for the issues that mattered most to her including racial and gender equality, education, and ending poverty. Chisholm introduced more than 50 pieces of legislation, was a co-founder of the National Women’s Political Caucus, and was the first black women to serve on the Rules Committee. In 1972 Shirley Chisholm was the first […]

Captain Lanning, who won the toss at Providence Stadium and elected to bat first, led from the front after a slow start saw Australia fall to 8-3, losing three wickets in six balls.

Signs of human activity are hard to come by on the plateau of Mount Roraima, a sandstone tepui, or table-top mountain, that rises out of the jungle below. But on the mesa sits a small man-made marker that marks that spot at which the borders of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana meet.

The 12-square-mile summit area of Mount Roraima was unexplored until 1884. What at first appeared to be a barren landscape above the teeming jungle was soon discovered to harbor many fascinating plants that had adapted to the environment, dotted with caves and canyons.

One of the rare signs of a human activity on the tepui (meaning "house of the gods" in the native Pemon language) is a whitewashed stone pyramidal structure. About seven feet tall, the marker sits on the tripoint where the borders of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana all meet.

The Mount Roraima tripoint marker was erected during a joint expedition between Venezuela, Brazil and British Guiana in 1931 (Guyana achieved its independence from the United Kingdom on May 26, 1966). One side of the marker is clearly marked with the word “Brasil” and the nation's national shield, and the other with “Venezuela.” The Venezuelan side also bears a bronze plaque and the geographical marker “BV-0,” referring to the zero point between the two national boundaries (with no mention of Guyana). The Guyanese side, meanwhile, is almost blank save for some barely legible and crudely done lettering (you can see it in this 360-degree image).

Even this isolated table-top mountain couldn't escape political squabbling. Venezuela and Guyana have been engaged in a long-running border dispute stemming from Venezuela's claims to the western portion of Guyana, which it claims as the Venezuelan region of Guayana Esequiba (and which, if recognized internationally, would push Guyana off the top of Mount Roraima and then some). Hence the “BV-0” and Venezuela's stanch lack of recognition of Guyana's place on the tripiont marker.

But as things stand, any adventurous soul who manages to reach the summit area of Mount Roraima can wrap his or her arms around the tripoint marker and claim to be in three different countries at once.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — West Indies were given a warm reception when they arrived here Monday evening to complete their final preparation for the Women's Twenty20 World Cup which bowls off at the Guyana National Stadium on Friday.

The reigning World champions were hosted in a cocktail reception at the cultural Umana Yana venue which was attended by Guyana Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo; Director of Sport Christopher Jones, along with several other government officials.

West Indies face New Zealand in their final official ICC warm-up on Wednesday night before clashing with Bangladesh in their opening preliminary match two days later.

Dancers perform one of their cultural routines during the cocktail reception for West Indies Women.

The fixture will be one of 11 preliminary matches being staged at the National Stadium here and Nagamootoo said Guyana's hosting of the tournament – the first ICC stand-alone women's event – was a major turning point in sports for the country.

“When we talk about the glass ceiling, Guyana has not only touched it, we have in fact smashed it and I think that the T20 competition in Guyana featuring women's teams would be amazing to all of us who would like to see the full empowerment of our women, not only in the arena of politics and administration but in the arena of sports and the arena of culture,” said Nagamootoo.
