The rest of the movie is pretty by the numbers by comparison in my view. To me the only dramatic bit was the pilots who keep dying in early tests and the astronauts amounting to being guinea pigs for geopolitical gamesmanship but the movie plays this as some Homeric monument.

PNG bishops call for asylum seekers to be admitted to Australia      Cache   Translate Page

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, Nov 6, 2018 / 04:01 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Police in Papua New Guinea are moving sick refugees and migrants out of the capital city in preparation for a major economic conference, drawing ongoing criticism from the country’s Catholic leaders.

The refugees and migrants are being sent back to Manus Island off the northern coast of the country, where asylum seekers trying to reach Australia are being housed in poor conditions.

The Australian government has sent hundreds of asylum seekers to the island for processing since 2012, and around 70 men had been taken to Port Moresby, the capital, for medical treatment.

As many as 10 of the men being moved had not finished their treatment, but were told they would return in a month to complete it, Guardian Australia reported. One man reportedly attempted suicide after he was told he would be sent back to Manus Island without treatment.

Authorities are justifying the move by saying that the city’s hospital is needed for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference delegates and conference employees who may need medical treatment. APEC is scheduled to begin meetings in Port Moresby Nov. 12.

The Papua New Guinea Bishop’s Conference recently called for all the refugees and asylum seekers to be brought to Australia by Dec. 25, saying that their country cannot continue to provide adequate care.

“We are deeply concerned that the human rights of the refugees and asylum seekers have been breached as they were forcibly sent to [Papua New Guinea]; and Australia's policies has caused us reputational damage,” a panel convened by the bishops wrote Nov. 1.

“We, the participants are speaking on behalf of the women and children on Manus who are the victims of Australia's policies. The men have suffered enough from prolonged detention. Enough is enough. The time has come to let them go.”

About 650 migrant and refugee men are currently living on Manus Island, according to The Guardian. Conditions are bad, according to Behrouz Boochani, a Kurdish Iranian journalist, who said the men are suffering widely from mental and physical illness. The conditions at the camps have been condemned by Church leaders and human rights groups.

Australia has had a system of “third country processing” since 2012 for asylum seekers who come to Australia by boat without a valid visa. The system transfers the asylum seekers to other countries, where they are processed based on that country’s laws.

Many of those seeking asylum in Australia come from Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Iraq, and Iran, travelling by boat from Indonesia. They are typically intercepted by the Australian navy before reaching land, and are then sent to detention camps in Papua New Guinea and Nauru, a small Micronesian nation.

The government of Australia made an agreement with the government of Papua New Guinea in 2013, providing that migrants sent to Papua New Guinea from Australia would be settled there if they are found to be refugees. Otherwise they would be sent back to their country of origin or another country where they have legal residence.

Papua New Guinea is facing a medication shortage, an outbreak of polio, increased rates of tuberculosis, and funding crises in health and education, according to The Guardian.

The West African Drumming Ensemble is open to all Buffalo State students, faculty, and staff, plus community members who want to experience and share the power of group drumming. Using djembes, dundun drums, and iron bells, this ensemble performs traditional music of the Mande ethnic groups living in Guinea, Mali, Senegal, and the Ivory Coast. Ensemble members practice proper drum techniques while layering rhythms together and improvising over the music. This ensemble is in demand; performing at various campus events and at Music Department concerts. In addition to exciting, intricate rhythms, performances also include traditional songs, dances, and costumes.

Alumni update – Ben Cooper (‘16) experienced a new way of life in Peru as a Peace Corps volunteer

Ben’s back.

Ben Cooper, a 2016 environmental engineering graduate, has returned from Peru and his two-year assignment as a sanitation and water engineer with the Peace Corps. He left in late April 2016 and returned to the U.S. in June grateful for his lessons shared and learned. (See Headed to Peru from 2016.)Admiring the Andes -- Ben Cooper ('16) was able to travel in South America during his two years in the Peace Corps as a sanitation and water engineer.

Cooper said the favorite part of his daily experience was living a different culture.

“So much of the Peace Corps' message is centered not just in the sustainable development aspect but mostly in the intercultural exchange,” Cooper said. “Being in such a small rural village for two years really gives you a chance to learn a whole new way of life, and I would say that was the best part about serving in the Peace Corps.

“From learning a new language, trying new foods -- such as guinea pig -- or celebrating local holidays, it really pushes you outside your comfort zone and teaches you a lot. Not to mention getting to share my story with locals and teach them about what life is like here in the United States.”

Cooper finished his undergraduate degree in environmental engineering in the spring of 2016 and departed for Peru immediately to train with the Peace Corps as a sanitation and water engineer. During the next three months, the focus was on intense language skills in Spanish and technical training.

“I knew next to no Spanish when I arrived in Peru,” he said, “but with the help of my host family and Peace Corps language instructors, I was able to have a functional amount of Spanish by the end of my training. I built off of it during the next 24 months in my community.

"The people of Venecia live simple farm lives. But ... I was always welcomed and offered a plate of food by my neighbors." - Ben Cooper ('16)

“In the summer of 2016, I was assigned to Venecia, a small mountain village high in the Andes. Conditions were very rural. The city closest to us was a three-hour drive through a mountain pass. Communications in and out were limited.

“I spent my first three months studying my community, doing house visits, and getting to know the conditions before I decided I could best serve by helping to improve the availability of treated water, which I did by working with key community members to develop low-cost chlorination systems.”

Cooper said materials and funding were minimal.

“Since we lived so rurally, I had to either use what we had or go to the city to bring in materials we were missing,” he explained. “The chlorination systems we were building were made from repurposed plastics and modeled from larger systems; large buckets from hardware stores to hold the mother solution, IV tubing from our local health post to regulate the flow rate, other odds and ends that went toward keeping it simple but effective.”

Cooper said once the system was installed, he spent a lot of time teaching the individuals who will be maintaining the system.

“Getting any kind of funding for a project didn’t come easy,” he continued. “Luckily I was able to work with my community to write a grant, which led to funding that we used to implement a water treatment system for 280 families. I would say that was my largest victory during my service.”

Cooper said that outside of the technical skills he gained, learning how to live a more humble life is the most valuable lesson he took away from his time in Peru.

“The people of Venecia live simple farm lives, typically in adobe brick homes. Conditions are usually cold and/or wet. But, no matter what was happening, I was always welcomed and offered a plate of food by my neighbors. They were always interested in just talking to me and hearing my perspective on what was going on and what I was working on.”Spartan Engineer Ben Cooper implemented a water treatment system for 280 families in the Andes Mountains as a Peace Corps volunteer.

Before the Peace Corps, Cooper added, he thought the latest iPhone was a necessity – “but now I feel it can be as simple as running water in your home.”

Cooper, who is from Wyandotte, returned to the U.S. in June and spent the summer catching up with his family and friends. He recently moved to Chicago and has joined Arcadis as an environmental engineer.

Radio interview with Alan Jones, 2GB      Cache   Translate Page

ALAN JONES: Prime Minister, good morning.

PRIME MINISTER: G’day Alan.

JONES: Prime Minister, just getting the message across before we go onto this other stuff. Daniel Andrews, the Premier of Victoria, has signed up to a secret agreement with China on a global infrastructure program. Has that been discussed with your Government?

PRIME MINISTER: It hasn’t been discussed with me, no, and that was a bit of a surprise when I saw it the other day. You know, we’ve had a very consistent policy on the Belt and Road Initiative now for years and we don’t have an MOU with the Chinese Government on those things. We’re getting on with business with China as you know, I mean Marise Payne will be up there, she is on her way up there today and Trade Minister Simon Birmingham, he has been there. You know, China is a very important business partner to Australia and that’s going well and that’s great. But we’ve always had a very consistent position on this and we’ve always been clear about it and when these things happen, then that creates mixed messages and it would have been helpful I think is they had been a bit more engaging on that.

JONES: Have you spoken to Andrews?

PRIME MINISTER: No I haven’t, he hasn’t spoken to me about it either.

JONES: But he’s signed an MOU, he’s signed an MOU – a Memorandum of Understanding – without raising this with the Federal Government and won’t release the details.

PRIME MINISTER: Well he should, and he should be upfront with the Victorian electors, he’s in the middle of an election at the moment. He doesn’t seem to have even explained it to his own Labor colleagues. I mean, foreign policy is the domain of the Commonwealth Government. I’d like to give him a few tips on how he should be running his police force down there because if you’re living in Victoria, he hasn’t been doing a pretty crash hot job on that. So if we want to start going over each other’s lines and giving advice about how we should run each other’s shows, how about having a police force in Victoria like the one we have in NSW. That might do a lot to give safety to people in Victoria.

JONES: Prime Minister, you’re past involvement in tourism – and this is of interest to all Australians – the Gold Coast is an important destination. I note you’ve tipped in $112 million of federal money for this what I think is the 3A project for the Light Rail and that’ll take it from Pacific Fair down to Burleigh Heads.

PRIME MINISTER: Yep.

JONES: Surely there’s got to be infrastructure money to knock down Coolangatta Airport in the interests of tourism and build something that is international, and then to get the Light Rail down to Coolangatta Airport. I mean how… why is that impossible?

PRIME MINISTER: Well first of all on the Light Rail, that’s the next stage. I think there are plans to take it all the way down. Now we’ve put $112 million as you say to get it down to Burleigh, going from Broadbeach down to Burleigh. Now we’ve put our money in, the state government yet hasn’t put their money in. It’s a bit like, you know, what we’ve been trying to do with Pines River up north on the Bruce Highway. I mean, we’ve put our money in and we’ve been trying to get the state government to do it for years. And so I’ve just announced up here today – we’re in Rockhampton today – we’re putting $800 million into the ring road project up here in Rockhampton which will be enormously important for their future economy and how things are going to operate up here. And as you know, we’ve put the investment into the pipeline project to secure Townsville’s future water supply, that’s $200 million. So we’re investing in the infrastructure that is going to make a very big difference to Queensland and we want the state government to pony up as well.

JONES: Sure, but I’m just saying, as a former tourism bloke, Coolangatta Airport, this is a mecca, the Gold Coast. People come from all over the world to go to the Gold Coast and it’s just a mess. A mess. Why can’t there be infrastructure money to rebuild Coolangatta Airport?

PRIME MINISTER: Well the owners of the airport I’m sure if they want to take it further would put forward proposals and they’d discuss that with the state government in particular and with the Commonwealth as is necessary. I mean, it is a very important part of the infrastructure of the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast is going to continue to be a very big city.

JONES: Absolutely.

PRIME MINISTER: And the light rail, which we have already invested in. This will take our investment to about $570 million in that Gold Coast project and you know, it’s a linear city, it’s not like Sydney or Melbourne or Brisbane for that matter. It’s a long strip as we know, and what it didn’t have was a spine in terms of a public transport spine, and that’s what we’ve been investing in. Now you know, it’s the biggest investment our Government has made in light rail anywhere in the country and I thought it was a very… the right place to do it, because you’ve got to build the infrastructure for the people and that’s what we’re doing there. And Coolangatta Airport, you know that will continue to grow and take international flights and if there’s further work that needs to be there I’m sure the Gold Coast Council and the state government will get together and start working on that project.

JONES: Can I just make this point to you, because the bus is about campaigning. You’re starting on the campaign trail, obviously they are now voting in America as to the future of Donald Trump. But his campaign was nothing if it wasn’t an attempt to differentiate in a big, big way how he was different from his opponents. Now, I don’t know whether you have noted or your staff have pointed out to you the recent provincial elections in Canada in the biggest province, Ontario. Now there was a bloke who was almost, I mean I have to say, incoherent in speech but nonetheless the Ontario economy was fantastic. Unemployment terrific, the lowest for several decades, GDP growth was 2 per cent, but the Ontario Financial Post wrote, “When voters looked at the economy this time, they plainly couldn’t get past one aspect of it that was actually in horrible shape – energy affordability.” Now this Kathleen Wynne was the Liberal leader – the equivalent for my listeners to the Labor Party – and the Financial Post, “Despite a favourable economic situation in Kathleen Wynne’s favour, it was her Party’s epic mismanagement of the electricity file in particular that dominated her opponents platform and captured voters’ minds. Meanwhile, her cap and trade system of carbon dioxide taxes was slowly making most other forms of energy needlessly more expensive as well. Liberal clownery on electricity prices almost defies description. Between 2008 and 2016, Ontario’s residential electricity costs grew by more than 70 per cent.” Now, ours have grown by more than 100 per cent.

In terms of differentiating yourself from the other side, why wouldn’t you say simply well look, we’re out of Paris, instead of just saying we’re going to go after the big generator companies. We’re going to slash billions of dollars from the subsidies, get rid of these renewable energy subsidies and you’ve made a massive differentiation from the other crowd.

PRIME MINISTER: Well Alan, we are getting rid of the subsidies. The subsidies are going out.

JONES: 2020.

PRIME MINISTER: What we don’t have…

JONES: 2020.

PRIME MINISTER: Is a reductions target that actually goes to 45 per cent. I mean, 26 per cent doesn’t make any difference to electricity prices at all, we’ve talked about that before. A 45 per cent emissions reductions target, which is Labor’s plan if they’re elected, then that will see an increase in electricity prices greater than what we saw from Julia Gillard’s carbon tax. So that’s the difference. There’ll be higher electricity prices under Labor and they’ll have a renewable energy target of 50 per cent.

JONES: It’s just that Paris, the name, the word Paris is a metaphor for hanging onto a past which has failed us. They are saying if you could just get out of this Paris thing, which is non-binding, but it is a metaphor and while ever you hang onto Paris and the signatories to Paris, people say, “Oh well he’s clinging to the past.” To carve a new future, right.

PRIME MINISTER: I’m not though, Alan. I’m not stuck in the past. I’m not interested in symbolism, I’m not interested in metaphors, I’m interested in electricity prices going down and what I’m telling you that 26 per cent we’re going to hit in a canter, it’s not going to make any difference to electricity prices. Angus Taylor is…

JONES: Then you don’t need Paris, rip it up.

PRIME MINISTER: Well Paris is also important to all of our Pacific neighbours, Alan, as I have discussed with you before. This is a very important issue within our own region and there are concerns…

JONES: Why, because global warming… what, because global warming is going to wash away the islands in the Pacific? That’s crap.

PRIME MINISTER: Well Alan, you’re entitled to that view and they’re entitled to their view where they live.

JONES: What, do you think that’s going to happen?

PRIME MINISTER: That’s not the point Alan.

JONES: Do you think that Bondi Beach is going to finish up at Bathurst?

PRIME MINISTER: No I don’t think that Alan, I don’t think that at all. But what I am saying is we have real strategic issues in the Pacific and the south-west Pacific, and all of these things have to be managed. I don’t think there’s any value, any value at all on electricity prices, it’s not going to change electricity prices one jot. Absolutely one jot.

JONES: No, but do you think all these rent-seekers in the Pacific should get money that you’ve said you’re not going to contribute to Paris. We’ve already tipped in $200 million. They’re rent-seekers, they just want money.

PRIME MINISTER: No I don’t think that’s very respectful to the Pacific Islands, Alan, I really don’t, and I don’t share that view. They’re part of the world in which we live here and we’ve always been doing the right thing by them and we think back to Papua New Guinea, they did the right thing by us when it came to our Diggers. So we have a very special relationship with the Pacific and we need to, for our own interest as well as that it’s part of the community and family of nations we live in in this part of the world. We do the right thing by them, they’ll do the right thing by us.

JONES: Ok two ones. The other things I talk about a major differentiation. Will you be cutting back, publicly and significantly, because we’ve got the world’s highest per capita immigration intake. Are you going to reduce the rate of immigration? This is a big issue out there, it’s all my correspondence, that’s what they’re talking about.

PRIME MINISTER: Alan, what our immigration policy is going to be, they are going to be built from the ground up. You’ve heard what Gladys has been saying in NSW, you’ve heard what has been said in other states and what our immigration policy should be is the sum of the number of people that our infrastructure can support. And instead of doing a top-down approach, what I’m doing with the states and territories now is saying, “You tell me how many people you can accommodate in your state and around your state.” And our immigration numbers will be based on how many people those states can support with the infrastructure and services they can provide.

JONES: So people listening to you will say well therefore it’s got to be cut because they know that they can’t accommodate what they’ve got now.

PRIME MINISTER: Well we’ll do the sums. In Sydney and in Melbourne I think that’s true.

JONES: When will you have them done?

PRIME MINISTER: Well the immigration programs are set in every Budget, Alan, but what happens here, I’m up in North Queensland, Rockhampton – Central Queensland I should say – North Queensland later today. But they say they can take another 10,000 people here in Rockhampton with the existing services and infrastructure they have. In Adelaide, they want more people… and the jobs. That’s why we’re putting the ring road in at $800 million. In Tasmania, their population is increasing and they want to increase it more. In South Australia, it’s the same. In Western Australia…

JONES: Do you think that’s what the people want, is that what the public are telling you?

PRIME MINISTER: That’s what they’re telling me in those states Alan, it is.

JONES: Ok. Righto, I want to get something before we go. Negative gearing, this is another big, big issue out there. There’s two big issues, population and Paris are two big issues. Negative gearing and stealing money from retirees. We’ll talk again next week I know but can I have a word from you on those two issues, negative gearing and Labor and stealing the money from the retirees.

PRIME MINISTER: Well, on negative gearing and increasing the capital gains tax by 50 per cent too, by the way, that’s a lose-lose. It’s a lose if you own a home and it’s a lose if you’re renting a home because your rent will go up and the value of the home you’re in or own as an investment property will go down. Now the Labor Party seems to think this is the best time in the world to do this because, you know, the market’s soft. Well, that’s what they thought about the mining industry when they came up with that stupid idea of the mining tax.

The Labor Party has a knack of finding the worst possible time to hit people with ridiculous taxes. And on the self-funded retirees, and retirees more generally, I mean there are literally a million people who are going to be hit by this $5 billion tax on retirees who did nothing other than buy Australian shares through their tax refund, they get some extra money. I mean, there’s thousands of people.

JONES: Right, we’ll start there next week. We’ll start there next week. You go, I’ve got to go and thank you for your time, talk to you next week.

PRIME MINISTER: Good on you Alan, cheers. Bye.

Information Minister Presents Topics at Interministerial Council Meeting      Cache   Translate Page
Following the Interministerial Council meeting on November 6, the Minister for Information, Press and Radio, and Minister Spokesperson for the Government, Eugenio Nze Obiang, presented the topics that were analyzed during the meeting, which took place at the Ministry for Finance, Economy and Planning.

The Minister stated that, during the meeting, the Presidency of the Government presented the draft project for a Decree granting the name of “October 12 2018, 50th Anniversary“ to the Promenade in Malabo, which was the setting for the military and popular parade during the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Equatorial Guinea’s Independence.

Nze Obiang indicated that he had sanctioned a legal instrument in order to bring about this popular wish, and the promenade would be called October 12 - 50 Years of National Independence Promenade.

They also analyzed the Membership Convention for the National Gendarmerie of Equatorial Guinea in the Organization of African Gendarmeries (OGA), presented by the Minister of State for National Security, Nicolás Obama Nchama. This is an instrument to confront the situation of international criminality through international cooperation within the framework of the exchange of assistance between all countries in general, and the various institutions in African countries in particular, in order that this cooperation serves as an instrument of security, guaranteeing both the interests and the stability of the African continent. Its aim is also to contribute towards the fight against the new challenges that are affecting the internal security of States, and increase the capacity to prevent crises.

In order to achieve that, it is necessary for the body of the National Gendarmerie to take the initiative and join the OGA, and to also harmonize effective cooperation. The Government gave the go-ahead to this instrument, so that it can follow its legal procedure.

The commission charged with verifying the various income sources at ministerial departments also submitted information to the Interministerial Council. Nze Obiang stated that the Government is aware of the need to find different sources of income, without affecting the well-being of the population.

The Minister and Government Spokesperson also mentioned the collection of non-petroleum income, and stated that in recent months this income had increased and surpassed forecasts, “This is a good information, but the Prime Minister once again recommended to members of the Government to double their efforts in order that what belongs to the State coffers finds its destination”, he noted.

Furthermore, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Simeón Oyono Esono, presented some instruments that the Government has to ratify, agreements on cooperation between the republic of Equatorial Guinea and the Republic of Yibuti and Portugal; the agreement on reciprocal extension of visas on diplomatic, official and service passports between Equatorial Guinea and the Russian Federation; and the convention for Central Africa on the control of small arms, ammunition and all parts and components, known as the Kinshasa Convention.

Ambassador in Brussels Meets Various European Counterparts      Cache   Translate Page
With the recent opening of the ACP Office for South-South and Triangular Cooperation in Malabo, the Equatorial Guinea Ambassador in Brussels, Carmelo Nvono-Ncá, had important diplomatic activities to notify his colleagues in the European capital for the functions and aims of this significant office.

On October 29, Nvono-Ncá met the new Spanish Ambassador, Beatriz Larrotcha Palma, to whom he stressed that Spain would particularly value this important achievement by the only Spanish-speaking country in Africa.

Furthermore, the Ambassador met François Roux, the Belgian Permanent representative in the European Union, to whom, in addition to reporting on the opening of the headquarters, he stressed the intentions of the Equatorial Guinea Embassy in Brussels to carry out a powerful visibility campaign for this achievement, both in Brussels and in the rest of Europe, beginning at the start of 2019.

Nvono-Ncá also notified ambassador Roux about the visit of the Equatoguinean delegation next week in Brussels, which will underline the progress that has been made in Equatorial Guinea’s plural political system.

She pursues what she thinks is a prestigious job in the frontier’s “finest kitchen,” but instead finds herself in a matchmaker’s agency . . .
Isaak Gunderson is one of Helena, Montana’s most eligible bachelors, but he’s too focused on running for mayor and his family’s business to think about a wife and family. His twin brother, Jakob, is supposed to be too busy as well, yet sends for a mail-order bride anyway. Isaak doesn’t want to fuel an ongoing rivalry with his twin, but this tempting newcomer can’t be ignored. If only she’d come to Helena a different way and loving her wasn’t a betrayal . . .

Guest post from Gina & Becca

Dear Reader,
What’s better than fulfilling a dream? Why…taking the journey with a friend, of course. And we have the army to thank for it. Gina, whose father spent most of his army career at Fort Sill, had just moved back to Lawton, Oklahoma when Becca’s husband received orders to Sill. We were both looking for friendship and found a kindred spirit.
When we first conceived the Montana Brides series over Frappuccinos (Gina) and Chai Tea Lattes (Becca) at our local Starbucks, we set out to make our make our mail-order bride stories different.
The first thing we decided on was setting our series in Helena, Montana because, in 1888, the city boasted the most millionaires per capita in the United States. We liked the idea of a former mining town grown into a cultured city and that it wasn’t the usual isolated ranch setting for a Western.
We also wanted to create stories of mail-order bride romances gone wrong. In fact, our original series title was Mail (Dis) Order Brides. We brainstormed all the ways a mail-order bride story could go sideways and settled on our top three: a widow before a wife; two brothers, one bride; and a deceitful—though well-meaning—matchmaker. The Kitchen Marriage is the second book in this series and puts our heroine, Zoe de Fleur, between twin brothers, Isaak and Jakob Gunderson. Like our first bride, Emilia Stanek (The Promise Bride), Zoe shows up in town knowing no one. Does that sound familiar? As a former military kid and current military wife, we are very familiar with needing to start over, forge new friendships, and make strangers into family.
Thank you for taking a journey into the past with us. We pray you find our stories filled with hope, humor, and happily-ever-afters.
Sincerely,
Gina Welborn and Becca Whitham

My Review

A very different type of mail order bride story, especially when the perspective bride is lied to when she only reads French. Now who was the culprit who lied? Well, a delightful youngster who is very street smart, and becomes our Zoe’s unofficial brother, or a brother of the heart.
This is the second book in this series that I have read, and as enjoyable as the first. When our Zoe arrives, she is pledged to a twin brother, one who seems to like her and the other thinks she is a gold digger.
There is a theme of danger here, and if you read the first book you know what is happening, but if now there is enough information provided. Will Zoe find her happiness ever after? I found her speaking English with her French accent delightful, and she sure found food as a way into the hearts of the locals, but as you will see she needs to be careful of whom she trusts, not all are as they appear.
Will Jakob wake up and see what a treasure he is being offered, and will Isaak wake up and realize whom Zoe really is? There are answers here, but there is also danger, and our girl is way too trusting and loving!
A read you don’t want to miss, and yes, it can be read alone.

I received this book through Celebrate Lit, and was not required to give a positive review.

Face to Face: Looking at Objects That Look at You, thru Dec 9      Cache   Translate Page
The Hearst staff and 14 UC Berkeley freshmen have co-curated a global selection of objects that depict human faces in different ways. The exhibit asks: Why and how do crafting traditions of the world so often incorporate human faces, and how do people respond to those faces? Objects such as West African helmet masks and Roman sculpture illustrate varying conceptions of the “ideal” face, while Japanese tobacco boxes and ancient Peruvian portrait jars raise the question of what a facial expression can mean. Additional objects, including Chinese bamboo figurines and Caroline Mytinger’s paintings of Papua New Guineans, represent the contrast between portraying faces of one’s own ethnic group versus those of another. Visitors are invited to examine the way they themselves depict and interpret faces in their everyday lives. This timely exhibit cultivates critical thinking about crucial issues such as stereotyping, representation and misrepresentation, and snap judgments.

Alongside the exhibit, the Hearst Museum will be continuing its monthly Lounge Lecture series. These lectures, hosted in the cozy Lounge of Anthropological Discoveries, will focus on topics related to the exhibit and give visitors the opportunity to learn and discuss in an intimate and casual space. Featured speakers include Ken Goldberg, who will speak about the history of “the uncanny”, and Paul Koudounaris, who will speak about global death and funerary practices. In addition to lectures, the Hearst will also be hosting a variety of hands-on and performance events ranging from caricature drawing workshops to Maori song and dance demonstrations.

UK-based Nordgold has lowered its production guidance for 2018, after third-quarter output fell short of management expectations, following a rockslide at the Russia-based Berezitovy mine. Precious metals miner Harmony Gold’s production increased by 30% to 378 510 oz of gold in its first fiscal quarter ended September 30, compared with the 290 644 oz produced in the first quarter of the prior financial year. The boost in the group’s production and cash flow generation, CEO Peter Steenkamp commented on Tuesday, is owing to its Hidden Valley mine, in Papua New Guinea (PNG), and its Moab Khotsong operation, in South Africa.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is now ranked by the World Bank as a lower-middle-income country, largely due to mining-related income. Yet, stepping into remote villages in the South Fly District of Western Province, along the southern border with Australia, one is viscerally confronted with the lack of national expenditure or international finances in the region. Whether understood as corruption, rent-seeking, leakage, profit margins, or the high personnel costs of expatriate aid programs, surprisingly little PNG government, international aid, or global mining investment actually reaches these villages

David Wilkie - Blind-Man's Buff [1812]
The oil sketch for this picture is dated 1811 and many drawings exist for the composition and individual elements. Wilkie dated the final painting 1812, but was still working on it in 1813, redoing figures, with models to sit for him, his usual practice from which he had departed. Wilkie was paid 500 guineas for the finished work which hung in the Upper Anti Room at Carlton House with works by Adriaen and Isaac Ostade, Jan Steen and others. In 1823 it was sent to the King's Lodge (later Royal Lodge) in Windsor Park, the home of the King's sporting and rustic paintings.

2019: Atiku criticize President Muhammadu Buhari over Resourses management      Cache   Translate Page

ABUJA- Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2019 general elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has again chided President Muhammadu Buhari over the management of the nation’s resources under his administration.
In a statement by the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organization, APCO, the PDP flag bearer accused the President of persisting in the financial profligacy that has seen the APC “destroyed a once thriving economy.”

The statement read: “The Buhari government has announced that it is making a $500,000 donation to Guinea Bissau, along with other material donations. “Our response is to ask why a nation that has been officially named as the world headquarters for extreme poverty, will donate her resources to others instead of using them to solve pressing domestic problems?

High gold prices hurt demand on Dhanteras      Cache   Translate Page

New Delhi: In line with expectations, the sale of gold this Dhanteras across metro cities was subdued owing to high prices of the precious metal.

Gold prices are currently around the highest levels in the last few years. In Delhi, gold was priced around Rs 32,600 per 10 gram on Monday.

Dhanteras is considered an auspicious occasion for buying gold.

"In Delhi, demand on Dhanteras fell around 40 per cent from last year as gold prices are highest in the last three-four years," said an employee with Nihalsons Jewellers, based in the capital.

Another employee with Haryana Jewellers in Delhi said: "You can see crowds in the shops, but most of them do not end up buying."

In the country's financial capital -- Mumbai -- too traders said sales were down 40 per cent on year-on-year basis.

"Though there are crowds, people are not buying as per the expectations, but merely making token purchases of 5-10-20 gm to mark the auspicious day. Mostly gold coins/ or guineas are moving while small, medium or big articles of jewellery are virtually ignored," said Mumbai Jewellers Federation President Rakesh Shetty.

Similarly, demand for the yellow metal in Kolkata during the day was down 10 per cent as prices were around 7 per cent higher than last year, India Bullion and Jewellers Association's West Bengal President Pankaj Parekh told IANS.

"Dhanteras was expected to bring the much needed rejuvenation in the market but this year jewellery sales have not yet picked up so far," he said.

According to Parekh, the depreciation in rupee and rise of international gold prices by around 3-4 per cent in the last two months have pushed the domestic prices of the metal to Rs 32,700 (including GST) per 10 gm during this year's Dhanteras from Rs 30,500 last year.

Somasundaram P.R., the World Gold Council's Managing Director for India, said organised players in the market seem "better placed" in comparison to the unorganised participants due to "transparency measures" including the use of digital wallets.

"Anecdotal feedback from industry suggests that though footfalls seems to be good, demand could be moderate," he said. The recent sharp increase in prices could weigh on the consumer wallet though, limiting purchases during this season, he said.

However, there were some voices of positivity, too.

The All India Gem & Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) said contrary to the expectations, gold and jewellery sales have zoomed during Dhanteras and the positive trend is expected to continue till the upcoming winter wedding season.

"The past three days have surprised even the industry. People are literally out in droves in shops and showrooms to make gold purchases. For two months, till last Saturday, the market situation was extremely gloomy," said GJC President Nitin Khandelwal.

"Our expectation is that USD may touch around Rs 85 in the near future, given the current international scenario. Along with that, gold itself would shoot up to Rs 45,000 per tola (10 gm). Plus, the upcoming winter marriage season is also driving up the sales," Khandelwal told IANS.

Jewellers have now set their eyes for the wedding season starting this month which is likely to firm up demand for gold for jewellery. The marriage season generally starts in November and lasts till March.

Gold sales average on 'dhanteras' in Mumbai      Cache   Translate Page

Mumbai: Keeping in tune with expectations, gold sales have notched a sharp fall of 40 per cent this year compared to 2017 Diwali owing to high prices and overall negative market sentiments, a leading retailers body said on Monday.

"Though there are crowds, people are not buying as per the expectations, but merely making token purchases of 5-10-20 gm to mark the auspicious day. Mostly gold coins/guineas are moving while small, medium or big articles of jewellery are virtually ignored," said Mumbai Jewellers Federation President Rakesh Shetty.

However, another industry body, the All India Gem & Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), said that contrary to expectations, gold and jewellery sales have zoomed during 'dhanteras' and the positive trend was expected to continue till the upcoming winter wedding season.

"The past three days have surprised even the industry. People are literally out in droves in shops and showrooms to make gold purchases. Since two months, till last Saturday, the market situation was extremely gloomy," said GJC President Nitin Khandelwal.

However, this time the purchases - mostly in small jewelleries of 10 gm (1 tola) or multiples - is for end-user purposes and not as investments, with the prospects of gold prices shooting up with the likely increase in US dollar rates soon.

"Our expectation is that USD may touch around Rs 85 in the near future given the current international scenario. Along with that, gold itself would shoot up to Rs 45,000 per tola (10 gm). Plus, the upcoming winter marriage season is also driving up the sales," Khandelwal told IANS.

The market sentiments are positive despite the gold rates going up from Rs 30,000/tola in 'dhanteras' 2017 to around Rs 31,500/tola this year, which portends good for the industry.

Adopting a cautionery stand, World Gold Council Managing Director P.R. Somasundaram said that though the feedback from the industry suggests good footfalls, "the demand could be moderate" in view of the recent sharp increase in gold prices.

"Organised players seem better places, a trend that has become evident in recent years after a spate of transparency measures. Digital wallets and online buying also seem to be growing in popularity, though they are relatively small," Somasundaram said.

A common periodic representation of interaural time differences in mammalian cortex.

Neuroimage. 2018 02 15;167:95-103

Authors: Salminen NH, Jones SJ, Christianson GB, Marquardt T, McAlpine D

Abstract
Binaural hearing, the ability to detect small differences in the timing and level of sounds at the two ears, underpins the ability to localize sound sources along the horizontal plane, and is important for decoding complex spatial listening environments into separate objects - a critical factor in 'cocktail-party listening'. For human listeners, the most important spatial cue is the interaural time difference (ITD). Despite many decades of neurophysiological investigations of ITD sensitivity in small mammals, and computational models aimed at accounting for human perception, a lack of concordance between these studies has hampered our understanding of how the human brain represents and processes ITDs. Further, neural coding of spatial cues might depend on factors such as head-size or hearing range, which differ considerably between humans and commonly used experimental animals. Here, using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in human listeners, and electro-corticography (ECoG) recordings in guinea pig-a small mammal representative of a range of animals in which ITD coding has been assessed at the level of single-neuron recordings-we tested whether processing of ITDs in human auditory cortex accords with a frequency-dependent periodic code of ITD reported in small mammals, or whether alternative or additional processing stages implemented in psychoacoustic models of human binaural hearing must be assumed. Our data were well accounted for by a model consisting of periodically tuned ITD-detectors, and were highly consistent across the two species. The results suggest that the representation of ITD in human auditory cortex is similar to that found in other mammalian species, a representation in which neural responses to ITD are determined by phase differences relative to sound frequency rather than, for instance, the range of ITDs permitted by head size or the absolute magnitude or direction of ITD.

I purchased this giant electro butt plug called the «Stanley». Nobody has been able to fit it, until today. Slave Tony is my guinea pig. The acrylic plug is conductive in four different areas to make his anus contract and pulse uncontrollably. I position the plug to shock directly on the prostate. I try different methods to see how much I can make his internal organs spasm out of his control. I decide that the slow, steady fuck to his ass looks the most interesting. The plug slowly sucks in and out of his ass uncontrollably. His prostate begins to make leak pre-cum. I am sure with time I could train him to orgasm with only anal stimulation via the electro plug.

The pendant and earrings set was made to comfort a grandmother who lost her precious granddaughter WAY too soon. The set of 6 patchwork pendants was made as part of a larger set. The buyer sent me a list of names, and which colors to feature in each pendant.

You send us a 1/4 teaspoon of your pet's cremation ashes and we make something special just for you. In these items, the silver-white dust is the ashes. We promise to handle your pet's cremains with the utmost of respect, and return what we do not use with your finished product.

Dichroic Glass: We normally work with dichroic glass, so here is a blurb about it. It is not possible to capture all the nuances of dichroic glass in photographs. That, of course, means that you will have an even more dynamic piece of jewelry when you are wearing it. We work primarily with dichroic glass. Di-chroic means two colored, or multicolored) . This type of glass transmits light in one wavelength, & reflects light in two other wavelengths. It is common for dichroic glass to appear as 2 or 3 different colors, simultaneously. Dichroic glass is coated with electronically excited metallic particles in a vacuum chamber, at elevated temperatures. In our studio, we start with large sheets of glass which we cut into small pieces. These pieces are specially arranged & melted together in a kiln to form our jewelry.

The pet memorial pieces are custom-made and handcrafted at Hayden Brook Studios. FL, USA.

Customer Feedback:

***** Oh. My. Goodness. They are PERFECT! I want to get a picture so I can share, but exquisite doesn't do them justice. The larger piece actually matches the shirt I had on when I opened them perfectly. WOW! You have really made me very, very happy and I want to share everywhere. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

***** Love love love~! Thank you. The one with the bubble I think is cool the way the ashes sort of move up and down. After seeing the crosses I decided to give mine to my 96 yr old mother in law (for now). I had thought she wouldn't use one, but after seeing them I changed my mind.

*****IT'S PERFECT! EXACTLY what I wanted! I am so freaking excited!! Seriously - it made me cry. Thank you so much! You have no idea how much I love it, and appreciate how much thought you put into it. Seriously! I showed the picture to my husband, and he said that it was perfect for me. I can't wait to show everyone! And, I can wear it as a necklace, right? [Answer is YES.] I should have asked you for some business cards - we have adoption meets once a month, and we're all "crazy" guinea pig people. Thank you so much for giving me a piece of art that can travel on my backpack, and memorialize my sweet guinea pigs. It's exactly what I hoped for!

***** I am MORE than pleased with my purchases. They are even more beautiful than they appeared on a computer screen. I have received so many compliments and others want information about where I purchased them. Thank you so much. I will be ordering more jewelry for family members.

***** Love my cross!!! The entire process was a wonderful experience. My dads ashes were used in the jewelry and it is a very awesome piece. It is truley one of a kind. I HIGHLY recommend them!!

***** This necklace is the most meaningful piece of jewelry I own. I can now carry my beautiful and dear mother in law close to my heart, wherever I go. She was truly a second mother to me, and she was taken too early from this world. The shop owners were absolutely a dream to work with, and they made sure to create a beautiful and custom piece that I would treasure forever. Whereas other cremation jewelry is quite over priced (and definitely out of my budget), Brook and Laurie are able to offer this jewelry at affordable prices as a service to those who are grieving or want to honor their loved ones. I am so thankful for them, and I highly recommend this shop! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

***** Hayden, my earrings are just awesome!!! I love the colors that you used, and I can't wait to dress up and wear them! This pair and the ones that I purchased last year for my girl friends are truly works of art. Thank you again for working with me :-)

***** I received my beautiful memorial necklace tonight. Its so bright a cheery, a wonderful way to remember my beloved grandparents. Thank you for your clear communication, fast service and respect shown to my loved ones. I will definitely purchase again.

***** A stunning piece of jewelry; I'm sure the ashes have made the shape of a fish and my husband loved fishing! Good people to deal with!

***** I sent a letter describing my dear husband along with pictures of him and they captured him beautifully in their work. It is gorgeous. I only wish he were here to enjoy it with me. I would highly recommend Hayden Brook for any work you want done. I simply love it.

Footballer shoots at goal

Liverpool will look to firm their grip on top spot in Group C when they travel to Serbia for their UEFA Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klopp's side hold a one-point lead over Napoli at the midway point of the group stage, with two wins and one defeat from their opening three games.

The Reds kicked off their European adventure with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Paris Saint-Germain on matchday one, before being beaten 1-0 by the Azzurri a fortnight later.

They ran out convincing 4-0 victors over Zvezda at Anfield last time out, but will face a tricky return tie in the Serbian capital.

The champions of Serbia are bottom of the pool, having picked up just one point in three matches and shipping 10 goals in their last two outings.

Vladan Milojevic's troops made a good enough start after holding the Naples outfit to a goalless draw, but heavy defeats to PSG (6-1) and the Merseysiders have left their Champions League hopes in tatters.

Two of their final three encounters are at home, which Red Star will look to use to their advantage with the backing of a partisan crowd inside the Rajko Mitic Stadium.

In team news, Klopp welcomes back Naby Keita, who missed the last four games with a hamstring injury he sustained on international duty with Guinea.

Xherdan Shaqiri has stayed on Merseyside to avoid any potential unpleasantness with Serbian fans following his controversial goal celebration against their national team at the 2018 World Cup.

Jordan Henderson also misses out as he continues to work on his fitness after a hamstring problem, while Nathaniel Clyne is absent due to illness.

Re: Sex tourism in Gambia...      Cache   Translate Page
From www gvnet.com I transfer the fllowing passage.

Human Trafficking and Modern-day Slavery

The Gambia is a source, transit, and destination country for children and women trafficked for the purposes of forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation. Within The Gambia, women and girls, and to a lesser extent boys, are trafficked for sexual exploitation, in particular to meet the demand for European sex tourism, and for domestic servitude. Boys are trafficked within the country for forced begging by religious teachers and for street vending. Transnationally, women, girls and boys from neighboring countries are trafficked to The Gambia for the same purposes listed above. Primary source countries are Senegal, Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Benin. Trafficking of Gambian boys to Senegal for forced begging and Senegalese boys to The Gambia for the same purpose is particularly prevalent. Gambian women and girls are trafficked to Senegal for domestic servitude, and possibly for sexual exploitation. Gambian women and children may be trafficked to Europe through trafficking schemes disguised as migrant smuggling. Reports in the last two years of Gambian, Senegalese, and nationals of other neighboring countries being transported from The Gambia to Spain by boat appear to be predominantly cases of smuggling rather than trafficking. - U.S. State Dept Trafficking in Persons Report, June, 2008 [
