I just came from Gambia. I must say I have never had such respect for gay people until I saw a couple of gay Gambians at Romano in Bakau. These guys are openly gay and effeminate and couldn't care who knows inspite of the local anti gay laws and the stupid president's gay death threats. Romano plays host to a live band every Sunday night which goes on til 3.30 am Monday morning. Although the weekly event is not necessarily a gay event/venue, this event does attract some gay Gambians. These guys are good "mbalax" dancers. It is customary to give them a few Dalasis (the local currency) if you appreciate their artistry. You don't have to though. You can simply watch then walk up to them to congratulate them thereby striking a conversation. Ensure any express of interest is done discreetly when they are alone or away from their female friends. Interestingly, some of these guys were arrested few years ago but it still has not stopped them expressing themselves. Some of them are well known homosexuals.

I am planning on visiting the Gambia next year.
But: how safe are you as a single white gay male travelling alone?

I am not extremely feminine, but you can see I am gay.
I want to visit the Gambia for the sun and the nice beaches, having dinner in the evening and a few drinks in a bar.
Will be staying at a middle class hotel (2 or 3 stars) in the coastal region.
Will be taking occasional trips but not looking for sex since I have been warned how dangerous that is.

Just for taking a trip like I described above and refusing offers of sex (just because I do not go on vacaction for sex) how dangerous can that be for me?

Human Trafficking and Modern-day Slavery

The Gambia is a source, transit, and destination country for children and women trafficked for the purposes of forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation. Within The Gambia, women and girls, and to a lesser extent boys, are trafficked for sexual exploitation, in particular to meet the demand for European sex tourism, and for domestic servitude. Boys are trafficked within the country for forced begging by religious teachers and for street vending. Transnationally, women, girls and boys from neighboring countries are trafficked to The Gambia for the same purposes listed above. Primary source countries are Senegal, Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Benin. Trafficking of Gambian boys to Senegal for forced begging and Senegalese boys to The Gambia for the same purpose is particularly prevalent. Gambian women and girls are trafficked to Senegal for domestic servitude, and possibly for sexual exploitation. Gambian women and children may be trafficked to Europe through trafficking schemes disguised as migrant smuggling. Reports in the last two years of Gambian, Senegalese, and nationals of other neighboring countries being transported from The Gambia to Spain by boat appear to be predominantly cases of smuggling rather than trafficking. - U.S. State Dept Trafficking in Persons Report, June, 2008 [

Oba of Benin to Prince of Wales - "Return our artifacts stolen since 1897"      Cache   Translate Page

Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has asked the Prince of Wales, Charles George, to support the agitation for the repatriation of ancient Benin artifacts which were taken to the United Kingdom in 1897 by the British authorities.

He stated that the repatriation of the artifacts would enable him to establish Oba Palace Museum for the promotion of tourism in Benin City, Edo State.

The monarch made the demand in a statement he delivered during a closed-door meeting with the heir to the British royal throne at the UK High Commissioner residence in Maitama, Abuja, on Tuesday.

Other traditional rulers at the meeting included the Ooni of Ife, Enitan Ogunwusi; Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar; Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe; Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, and others.

Charles, who had earlier visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, was on the last leg of his tour of the Gambia, Ghana, and Nigeria with his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

The Benin monarch traced the relationship between his kingdom and the British empire and lauded the robust collaboration between the two kingdoms over time.

Ewuare said, “Suffice to say that Nigerians in general and Benin people in particular will be most delighted to have your royal highness throw his royal weight behind our efforts to have some of our ancient artifacts that were taken in 1897 from the Royal Court of Benin returned to Benin to establish Oba Palace Museum for the promotion of tourism in Benin City, Edo State.”

The Oba told journalists after the meeting that the meeting discussed security and development issues in the country, including girl child education, action against human trafficking, illegal migration among others.

The Emir of Kano said the parley also discussed climate change, immigration, demographic explosion, population control, and their consequences.

He said, “The population of Nigeria today, is four, five times what it was in 1960, we are moving from 45 million to about 200m; We are not looking at the level of desertification, the erosion in Niger Delta, the loss of the reserve in Chad Basin. Basically, there is population explosion and you got diminishing resources.”

Despite the population explosion in the country, Sanusi stated that Nigerians had not changed the way they built houses, adding that everyone wanted a plot of land, noting that this had forced the government to convert farmlands to residential areas.
Prince Charles cancels trip to Jos over security concerns      Cache   Translate Page

The Prince of Wales has canceled his trip to Jos in Plateau State, Nigeria, over security concerns, following months of deadly clashes between nomadic herders and farmers in the restive region.

Mailonline reports that Prince Charles and his second wife, Camilla, arrived in the Nigerian capital Abuja on Tuesday, on the tail end of a West African tour that has included Gambia and Ghana.

They were expected to travel to Jos on Thursday, the last day of their stay, to discuss peace-building and conflict resolution.

“Due to operational constraints beyond our control, we have decided at this time not to include Jos during their royal highnesses’ visit to Nigeria.

“We are delighted to have an exciting programme of activity in Abuja and Lagos which will showcase those issues close to the Prince’s and the Duchess’s hearts.

“The decision was taken upon advice from the Nigerian government and others involved in security and operational aspects of the visit,” said a British foreign office spokeswoman on Monday.

Jos, the Plateau state capital of about one million people, is nestled in the hills of central Nigeria and has frequently been the scene of violence.

Plateau state lies in Nigeria’s so-called Middle Belt that separates the predominantly Muslim north from the largely Christian south.

It has long been a hotbed of ethnic, sectarian and religious tensions that flare up during election season.

Nigerians are set to vote in hotly contested presidential polls in February 2019.

Earlier, President Muhammadu Buhari hosted Prince Charles and Camilla at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The couple were received at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Muhammed Bello.

After the airport formalities, they were driven to the Presidential Villa where they were received by the President.

They arrived the Presidential Villa at about 2.20pm.

Buhari was joined by top government officials to welcome them.

After the welcome formalities, they retired into the President’s office where they held talks.

They did not address reporters at the end of the meeting.

How house design affects malaria mosquito density, temperature, and relative humidity: an experimental study in rural Gambia.

Lancet Planet Health. 2018 Nov;2(11):e498-e508

Authors: Jatta E, Jawara M, Bradley J, Jeffries D, Kandeh B, Knudsen JB, Wilson AL, Pinder M, D'Alessandro U, Lindsay SW

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Unprecedented improvements in housing are occurring across much of rural sub-Saharan Africa, but the consequences of these changes on malaria transmission remain poorly explored. We examined how different typologies of rural housing affect mosquito house entry and indoor climate.
METHODS: Five typologies of mud-block houses were constructed in rural Gambia: four were traditional designs with poorly fitted doors and one was a novel design with gable windows to improve ventilation. In each house, one male volunteer slept under a bednet and mosquitoes were collected indoors with a light trap. Typologies were rotated between houses weekly. Indoor conditions were monitored with data loggers and the perceived comfort of sleepers recorded with questionnaires. We used pyschrometric modelling to quantify the comfort of the indoor climate using the logger data. Primary measurements were mean number of Anopheles gambiae and mean temperature for each house typology.
FINDINGS: In thatched-roofed houses, closing the eaves reduced A gambiae house entry by 94% (95% CI 89-97) but increased the temperature compared with thatched-roofed houses with open eaves. In houses with closed eaves, those with metal roofs had more A gambiae, were hotter (1·5°C hotter [95% CI 1·3-1·7]) between 2100h and 2300 h, and had 25% higher concentrations of carbon dioxide (211·1 ppm higher [117·8-304·6]) than those with thatched roofs. In metal-roofed houses with closed eaves, mosquito house entry was reduced by 96% (91-98) by well fitted screened doors. Improved ventilation of metal-roofed houses made them as cool as thatched houses with open eaves. Metal-roofed houses with closed eaves were considered more uncomfortable than thatched ones with closed eaves. In metal-roofed houses, ventilated houses were more comfortable than unventilated houses before midnight, when people retired to bed.
INTERPRETATION: Closing the eaves reduced vector entry in thatched houses but increased entry in metal-roofed houses. Metal-roofed houses with closed eaves were, however, protected against malaria vectors by well fitted screened doors and were made comfortable by increasing ventilation. House designs that exclude mosquitoes and are comfortable to live in should be a priority in sub-Saharan Africa.

Gambia

How safe are gay tourists in the Gambia?      Cache   Translate Page

Whished i could tell something different.
Have been in The Gambia more then 10 times, and still come there.
All the times i have been there, i never met a real gay. Some boys do act as if they are gay,
but they do so to get something from you, money, a ticket to Europe, education or what else.
As a moslim country with a president that has said that all gays should be killed, you should not expect
sympathy overthere. Ofcourse, like everywhere in the world, there are people who use there brains
and untherstand that gays are also human, and need respect!
But don't tell that The Gambia is a paradise for gays
Absolutly not!!!!!!!!!

Agree with you regarding Gambia, you should also include other Islamic countries in Africa such as Senegal,Mali,Mauritania,Sudan. These are places to be avoided at all costs, they are extremely intolerant of gays, and risk your life, just for a few minutes of fun. No amount of money or any other incentive would ever lure me to visit such barbaric countries.

From www gvnet.com I transfer the fllowing passage.
