Spicy Salami Spread (Nduja) – Almost Instant Soft Serve Salami      Cache   Translate Page
I’m not saying this spicy salami spread is as good as traditional nduja, but I am saying this takes about 3 months less time to make, and still delivers most of the characteristics that make this Calabrian delicacy so amazing. And just in case you’re not familiar with nduja, a few of those characteristics are a rich, spicy, super-savory flavor, and soft, luxurious texture.

Finding some decent salami to use should be simple enough, but depending on where you live, the oil-packed Calabrian chilies may not be as easy to acquire. Any decent Italian market will carry them, so ask your Calabrian friends where they shop, but if that doesn’t work, you can find them online as well. Or, you could use another spicy, jarred pepper product like Sambal, or simply use fresh hot chilies like Fresno, or cherry peppers. If it’s spicy, and it’s a pepper, it will work.

You can substitute bacon for the pancetta, but since bacon is smoked, your final product will taste significantly different. Not bad, just different. In any event, the wonderful ways you can use this are extensive. I gave a few ideas in the video, but other highly recommended uses include adding it to pasta sauces, salad dressings, ravioli fillings, and even as a pizza topping.

Having said that, this stuff is so unique, and delicious, your guests might not leave you with much to experiment with, which is fine, since this is so fast and easy to produce. So, with peak entertaining season right in front of us, I really do hope you give this a try soon. Enjoy!

Ingredients for about 2 cups Spicy Salami Spread (Nduja):
4 ounces sliced or diced pancetta, cooked, fat reserved
1/3 cup seeded hot Calabrian peppers
3 tablespoons Calabrian pepper oil from the jar
12 ounces sliced salami
1/4 room temp butter
2 or 3 tablespoons olive oil, or as needed to adjust the texture to your liking

Man sentenced to 354 years in prison in highway shootings      Cache   Translate Page

FRESNO, Calif. — A judge in central California has sentenced a man who terrorized motorists by randomly shooting at them to 354 years to life in prison.

The Fresno Bee reports Jorge Gracia was sentenced Monday in Fresno.

A jury last month found Gracia guilty of shooting randomly at cars along a highway in six separate occasions.

Most of the shootings last year happened along Highway 145 near Kerman, Fresno. Vehicles were struck by gunfire, but no one was injured.

Prosecutor Katherine Plante says Gracia "was terrorizing the community" and that in one case bullets came a few feet away from a child strapped into a car seat.

Hey, what's up, 2:30 a.m.? Democrats won the House (with some fucking SWEET pickups, Sharice Davids HIIIIII!) barely? By the skin of our teeth? At this moment, that's a 25-seat pickup when John Boehner's "grassroots" Tea Party crew (LOL) had a pickup of SEVEN THOUSAND seats out of 435? Cool cool. We won the House and we don't have to move to Canada hardly at all.

In the morning, we'll have some good news for you. There is good news, in a lot of places, and we don't even have to resort to dogcatcher, route 5, New Mexico, to bring it to you. But a whole fucking lot of us were expecting the 500 percent increase in youngs, and one million percent increase in MAD NASTY WOMEN, to show the world, and ourselves, that America doesn't hate us and want us to die. That given the INSANE push to get EVERYONE VOTING, we would properly whomp that dick and his craven enablers. We were expecting VINDICATION from the polls, and instead, it's just ... a midterm, and a middling one, from the looks of it, here at 12:30 "mountain time," if that even exists. MY, that smarts!

You need to take a break from "politics"? I don't blame you. Just check back in tomorrow. It's our own fault for thinking we had chances in places like Texas and Georgia*, just because the people we had running there were smart and kind and empathetic and educated and everyone loved them, and the people they had running there were Ted Cruz and the actual offspring of a Hills Have Eyes kid and his mother-sister-grandma-aunt.

Ron DeSantis -- Rick? Whatever your name is, I am talking to you.

*Georgia, you get a fuck of an asterisk, I mean GODDAMN.

Maybe in the morning it will be a much better scene. Maybe we'll clean up in Orange County, California -- sure, why not -- but we sure as fuck won't clean up in Bakersfield or Fresno or wherever the hell Devin Nunes lives, because that cow-husbander is REALLY GOOD AT CONGRESS and should STAY IN IT FOREVER, because they still need to get to the bottom of Benghazi, there just haven't been enough investigations yet for Devin Nunes to not read before he demands another investigation, because he can't read good and also fucks cows.

Did I mention I am DRUNK and MAD? You can't tell because I am expert at typing, but that brings us to MOTHERFUCKING NANCY PELOSI. See, if the Democrats had lost, they should fire Nancy Pelosi. But if they had won, they should fire Nancy Pelosi. LUCKILY, at now a.m., we're in the sweet spot of "middling sort of blue wave" that means we should fire Nancy Pelosi. See, Republicans HAAAATE her. And folks who did not love Hillary Clinton, even though she stayed neutral in the race regarding Hillary Clinton, HAAAATE her. And Tim Ryan, a mediocre white dude far to her Right who wants her job, HAAAATE her. And tonight she said some nonsense about "bipartisanship," because low-info voters who make up most of America because America's stupid looooove "bipartisanship," so she said "dumb stupid words maybe we can trick Trump into giving us everything we want 'bipartisanship,'" so now everyone HAAAATE her. They are all like, "do we know anyone who is 30 and who has never run a Congress, or even been in Congress, who can take her job, because she is so polarizing which will never ever happen to any other Speaker of the House, Fox News will definitely love them for sure, is Paul Ryan available, no, he resigned after one term, maybe Maxine Waters who is definitely awesome but also we forgot the part about 'Fox News,' OH Barbara Lee, nobody at Fox could have a problem with that, let's by all means let the Republicans choose a speaker for us, because the middle aged and old women who do all the work for the party have not been insulted enough in the past two years and Hillary better go the fuck away but MITT ROMNEY IS IN THE SENATE NOW AND JOHN MCCAIN IS DOING EACH OF THE FIVE SUNDAY SHOWS FROM HEAVEN AND REBECCA IS NOT MAD ENOUGH TONIGHT."

Hang on, drinking.

Hang on, smoking and farts.

Wait, another fart.

Oooh, Scott Walker lost, what was I saying, oh it was FARTS!

Fuck you, go to bed, give me money, I love you.

Wonkette is the world's only website, and I will see you in the morning unless I see you first.

"It's the highest spirit of any election party in which the candidate is down 13 points," said Janz campaign manager Heather Greven.

Ohio State Must Be More Impressive Down the Stretch to Make Up Ground in College Football Playoff Race      Cache   Translate Page

Even though two teams ranked ahead of Ohio State last week lost on Saturday, the Buckeyes didn’t move up at all in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings.

As LSU only fell to No. 7 despite suffering its second loss of the season to Alabama, and West Virginia jumped up to No. 9 after its win over Texas this past weekend, Ohio State remains 10th in the race to make the four-team playoff field.

There’s still a lot that can happen in the next four weeks of football, and the Buckeyes have at least two opportunities remaining on their schedule for resume-boosting wins. It’s clear at this point, though, that the Buckeyes have some serious ground to make up in the eyes of the committee.

At the No. 10 spot, Ohio State is the lowest-ranked team among six Power 5 teams with only one loss. No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Georgia, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 8 Washington State and No. 9 West Virginia are all ranked higher despite also having one losses, and LSU is ranked ahead of the Buckeyes – as well as the Cougars and Mountaineers – even though the Tigers have two losses.

College Football Playoff chairman Rob Mullens said on a teleconference Tuesday night that the Buckeyes failed to move up in the rankings because of their lack of a convincing victory in their 36-31 win this past weekend against Nebraska, which came just one game after their 49-20 loss to Purdue.

“They did struggle a bit against a 2-7 team, and that’s two weeks in a row that they’ve struggled a little bit,” Mullens said. “They still have a quality win over Penn State on the road, they beat TCU in Texas when TCU was at full strength, but the last couple of weeks, Ohio State hasn’t been as strong as they were in the middle part of the year.”

While the Buckeyes have won eight of their nine games this season, they haven’t won the eye test in recent weeks. Even before their loss to Purdue, they weren’t particularly impressive in their 30-14 win over Minnesota and 49-26 win over Indiana, two teams whose records are just 4-5 this season.

Here’s the good news for the Buckeyes: If they can win on the road this Saturday at Michigan State, who is now ranked 18th in the CFP rankings are being unranked last week, that should be viewed as another quality win in the eyes of the committee. If the Buckeyes can beat Michigan in their regular season finale on Nov. 24, that will help their resume even more.

In between, it would certainly help the Buckeyes to be dominant at Maryland on Nov. 17, considering that the Terrapins are just 5-4 this season.

College Football Playoff Rankings
Rank # Team Record
1 ALABAMA 9-0
2 CLEMSON 9-0
3 NOTRE DAME 9-0
4 MICHIGAN 8-1
5 GEORGIA 8-1

7 LSU 7-2
8 WASHINGTON STATE 8-1
9 WEST VIRGINIA 7-1
10 OHIO STATE 8-1
11 KENTUCKY 7-2
12 UCF 8-0

The bad news for the Buckeyes is that even if they beat Michigan, it’s only guaranteed that two other teams will lose in front of them (Alabama plays Georgia and Oklahoma plays West Virginia).

Would two wins over teams that are currently ranked and a Big Ten Championship Game win – which is, of course, much easier said than done, especially considering the level at which Michigan is playing right now – be enough for Ohio State to vault up six spots from where it is now?

It wouldn’t be unprecedented. Ohio State was ranked just 14th in the second week of College Football Playoff rankings in 2014, and of course, the Buckeyes went on to earn the fourth spot in the playoff field and win the national championship.

In 2015, Oklahoma was ranked 12th and Michigan State was ranked 13th in the second week of rankings before going on to earn spots in the playoff field.

In each of the last two years, however, all four teams that have made the College Football Playoff have been ranked within the top five by the second week of playoff rankings.

With No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Notre Dame all undefeated and all but guaranteed to make the playoff if they win out, there could be only one spot available to the Buckeyes even if they can make a leap in the rankings.

Their top competition for that spot appears likely to be whoever wins the game between Oklahoma and West Virginia on Nov. 24, if that team also wins out and wins the Big 12 Championship Game, and Washington State if it wins out and wins the Pac-12 Championship.

Even though LSU is still ranked No. 7 right now – Mullens said Tuesday that the Tigers remained that high because they currently have the most wins over top-25 teams (No. 5 Georgia, No. 16 Mississippi State, No. 24 Auburn) – it would come as a surprise if they remained above a 12-1 Big Ten champion Ohio State team when they can finish with a record of no better than 10-2 (Alabama has already clinched the SEC West title).

Likewise, it would come as a surprise if Georgia lost the SEC Championship Game and remained ahead of Ohio State (though Georgia winning out could be a death spell for the Buckeyes, as Georgia and Alabama would likely both make the playoff if both finish with just one loss).

It’s far from a foregone conclusion – and perhaps not even considered likely at this point – that Ohio State will win the remainder of its regular-season games, considering how impressive Michigan looks coming off a 42-7 win over Penn State. Right now, the Buckeyes need to just focus winning on each of their remaining games of the schedule, because the playoff conversation will be irrelevant to them if they don’t.

That said, it would certainly help their cause if they can make a statement with a convincing win over Michigan State on Saturday, because simply winning out – even with a looming date against the Wolverines – might not be enough for Ohio State if it can’t convince the committee that it’s a better team than it’s looked so far.

Ohio State Ranked No. 10 in the Second College Football Playoff Rankings       Cache   Translate Page

Ohio State debuted at No. 10 in the College Football Playoff rankings last week, and that's where the Buckeyes stayed this week after a 36-31 win over Nebraska.

The top Alabama and Clemson remained in the top-two spots with Notre Dame sliding into the No. 3 spot after LSU's loss and Michigan moving up into the No. 4 spot. The next two teams on the outside are No. 5 Georgia and No. 6 Oklahoma.

Four other Big Ten teams cracked the top-25 with Penn State checking in at No. 20, Iowa at No. 21, No. 18 Michigan State and Michigan cracking the top six.

Michigan State's' No. 18 rankings sets up a top-20 matchup between the Buckeyes and the Spartans in East Lansing this weekend.

AP Top 25: Boston College climbs to No. 17      Cache   Translate Page

No. 7 West Virginia re-entered the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll after another weekend in which the number of ranked teams losing reached double digits.

Unanimous No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Notre Dame remained unchanged, and No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Georgia and No. 6 Oklahoma each moved up a spot. The Mountaineers surged from No. 12 after beating Texas on a go-ahead 2-point conversion in final minute.

Ten ranked teams lost this weekend, four in games against other ranked teams. Over the last two weeks, 21 ranked teams have lost, the most over a two-week span since the AP poll expanded to 25 in 1989.

Iowa State was ranked for the first time this season, one of five teams to move into the ranking this week.

POLL POINTS

There are seven teams in the ranking after Week 10 of the regular season that already have lost three times. If that seems like a lot, it is. Last season after Week 10, there were three teams in the Top 25 that had lost three games. In the previous five years, from 2012-16, there were a total of five teams ranked in the Week 10 AP poll that already had lost three times.

What's going on?

A few logistical changes to the college football season are at least a part of the increase. The Big Ten went to a nine-game conference schedule in 2016, joining the Big 12 and Pac-12, meaning more opportunities for those teams to pick each other off.

The Big 12 restarted its conference championship game last year after six-year hiatus. That condensed the conference's regular season, which from 2011-16 ran through the first weekend of December. Also, there has been an increase in September conference games in recent years.

Still, the only scheduling change throughout the Football Bowl Subdivision this season is in the Sun Belt, which became the final conference to add a championship game.

In conclusion: There are more opportunities for teams to lose, so the new normal is likely somewhere between this season's seven ranked three-loss teams by Week 10 to last season's three.

THIS WEEK IN 'BAMA

Alabama has been ranked in the top 5 for 49 straight weeks, the second longest streak to Miami's 55 weeks from Oct. 8, 2000-Oct. 26, 2003. There have been three other streaks of 48 straight top-five appearances:

Alabama, preseason 2011-Dec. 8, 2013.

Ohio State, preseason 1973-Sept. 20, 1976.

Oklahoma, Nov. 16, 1953-Nov. 11, 1957.

UP

All those ranked teams losing propelled a few teams to new heights in the Top 25.

— No. 13 Syracuse moved up nine spots to its best ranking since 1998, when the Orange got to No. 11.

— No. 14 Utah State is up four spots and has its best ranking since finishing 10th in 1961.

— No. 16 Fresno State moved up four spots. The Bulldogs were last ranked this high in 2015, when they reached 15 with Derek Carr at quarterback.

— No. 17 Boston College jumped seven spots and has its best ranking since 2007, when the Eagles last played in the ACC championship game and spent much of the season in the top 10.

DOWN

— Unbeaten No. 11 Central Florida fell two spots after beating Temple 52-40. The Knights ran their winning streak to a nation's best 21 straight games.

— No. 9 LSU slipped five spots after being shut out by Alabama.

— No. 19 Florida dropped six spots after losing for the second straight week.

— No. 21 Penn State fell seven places after being blown out by Michigan.

IN

There is a lot of recycling going on in the Top 25 this season. While Iowa State is in for the first time since last season, No. 20 Washington, No. 22 North Carolina State, No. 24 Michigan State and No. 25 Cincinnati all reappeared in the poll.

OUT

Utah fell out, leaving the Pac-12 with only two ranked teams, No. 10 Washington State and No. 20 Washington. The last time the Pac-12 had only two ranked teams was Oct. 16, 2016.

— Houston and Virginia had one-week stays in the Top 25 after making their debuts last week.

— Iowa and Texas A&M fell out after losing for the second straight week.

CONFERENCE CALL

SEC — 6 teams (1, 5, 9, 12, 18, 19).

ACC — 4 (2, 13, 17, 22).

Big Ten — 4 (4, 8, 21, 24).

Big 12 — 4 (6, 7, 15, 23).

American — 2 (11, 25).

Mountain West — 2 (14, 16).

Pac-12 — 2 (10, 20).

Independent — 1 (3).

RANKED vs. RANKED

No. 18 Mississippi State at No. 1 Alabama. A second straight ranked opponent for the Tide — if that even matters.

No. 2 Clemson at No. 17 Boston College. The biggest game left on Clemson's schedule. BC could shut the Tigers out of the ACC championship game with a victory.

No. 8 Ohio State at No. 24 Michigan State. The Buckeyes have become college football's biggest soap opera.

College football Top 25 roundup: No. 1 Alabama beats No. 4 LSU 29-0      Cache   Translate Page

BATON ROUGE, La. — Tua Tagovailoa threw two touchdown passes and ran 44 yards for a score in his toughest test this season, Alabama's defense stifled No. 4 LSU, and the top-ranked Crimson Tide remained unbeaten with a 29-0 victory Saturday night.

Tagovailoa took the field wearing a brace on right knee, threw his first interception of the season late in the first half and also played into the fourth quarter for the first time this season. None of those developments proved consequential. He was 25-of-42 passing for 295 yards and moved as well as well as he needed to, particularly when he sprinted up the middle of the field or his long TD run in the third quarter to give Alabama (9-0, 6-0 SEC, No. 1 CFP) a 22-0 lead.

Tagovailoa limped off the field after that play, went into the medical tent for some treatment and rode a stationary bike on the sideline, but returned for the next series.

LSU (7-2, 4-2, No. 3 CFP) entered a chance to control of the SEC Western Division with a victory, but that began to decreasingly realistic with every possession.

Alabama led 16-0 by halftime and forced LSU punts on the Tigers' first nine possessions. LSU drove to the Alabama 15 on its 10th series early in the fourth quarter, only to miss a field goal with 10:45 to go.

Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow completed 18 of 35 passes for 184 yards. He was sacked five times and had a pass intercepted.

NO. 2 CLEMSON 77, LOUISVILLE 16

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Travis Etienne ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns and 350-pound defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence added a 2-yard scoring burst for Clemson.

The Tigers (6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference, No. 2 CFP) improved to 9-0 for the third time in four seasons and can wrap up their fourth ACC Atlantic Division title next week at Boston College.

Trevor Lawrence threw a pair of early touchdown passes. Etienne went over the 1,000-yard rushing mark and scored his ACC-leading 15th touchdown. Tavien Feaster added 101 yards rushing.

Freshman Lyn-J Dixon ran for 116 yards, the second time this season Clemson has had three runners with 100 or more yards. They finished with a season high 492 yards rushing.

Linebacker Isaiah Simmons had a pick-six, the Tigers collected five sacks, coach Dabo Swinney's eldest son Will caught a TD pass and even "Big Dex," a junior defensive tackle projected as a can't-miss, NFL first-rounder got in on the fun in the Tigers' "Fridge Package" against overmatched Louisville (2-7, 0-6).

NO. 3 NOTRE DAME 31, NORTHWESTERN 21

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Ian Book threw for threw two touchdown passes and ran 23 yards for a score in the closing minutes to lead Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish (9-0, No. 4 CFP) remained in line for a playoff spot and continued to build on their best start since the 2012 team went undefeated before losing to Alabama in the BCS championship game. The Wildcats (5-4) had won four in a row to grab the Big Ten West lead and they stayed in this one when it looked like Notre Dame was ready to pull away.

Book threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to a leaping Miles Boykin in the corner of the end zone and a 47-yarder to Michael Young in the third to give the Irish a 21-7 lead. He sealed it in the closing minutes when he turned up the left side for that 23-yard run.

NO. 5 MICHIGAN 42, NO. 14 PENN STATE 7

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Shea Patterson accounted for three touchdowns and Michigan put together a dominant performance on defense.

The Wolverines (8-1, 6-0 Big Ten, No. 5 CFP) moved a step closer toward their goals of winning a conference championship for the first time since 2004 and earning their first spot in the College Football Playoff. The Nittany Lions (6-3, 3-3, No. 14 CFP) scored with 1:59 left, avoiding getting shut out for the first time since 2001 against Michigan.

Karan Higdon ran for 132 yards and a score that put the Wolverines up 35-0 early in the fourth quarter. Michigan held Penn State to 186 yards and forced three turnovers, including Tommy Stevens' interception that was returned 62 yards by Brandon Watson for a touchdown.

NO. 6 GEORGIA 34, NO. 11 KENTUCKY 17

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — D'Andre Swift ran for a career-high 156 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries against Kentucky's vaunted defense and Georgia wrapped up its second straight Southeastern Conference Eastern Division title.

Swift had an 83-yard breakaway in the third quarter that gave Georgia (8-1, 6-1, No. 6 College Football Playoff) a 28-3 lead. He also had a nifty 20-yard scoring run in the second period when the game was close. Elijah Holyfield ran for a career-high 115 yards on 18 carries, scoring on a 4-yarder in the third quarter.

Georgia rushed for a season-high 331 yards to earn a spot in the SEC championship game Dec. 1 in Atlanta. Kentucky (7-2, 5-2, No. 9 CFP) has never reached the SEC championship game, which has been played every year since 1992.

NO. 7 OKLAHOMA 51, TEXAS TECH 46

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Kyler Murray recovered from a pair of early interceptions that led to a two-touchdown deficit, throwing for 360 yards and three touchdowns and running for 100 yards and another score to rally Oklahoma.

Trey Sermon set career highs with 206 yards rushing and three TDs as the Sooners (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) stayed in the hunt for a return to the College Football Playoff with their 19th straight win in a true road game and 14th consecutive November victory.

Oklahoma was seventh in the first playoff rankings released this past week.

The Red Raiders (5-4, 3-3) led 31-28 at halftime, but freshman quarterback Alan Bowman didn't return in the second half of their eighth straight loss against a Top 10 team going back to 2012. Texas Tech officials didn't immediately say why Bowman left the game.

Texas Tech punted three straight times without getting a first down after Jett Duffey replaced Bowman again, just as he did five weeks ago when Bowman sustained a partially collapsed lung against West Virginia. Bowman returned two weeks ago against Kansas.

Duffey then started moving the Red Raiders, and they pulled within two on his 4-yard scoring pass to Zach Austin on fourth down midway through the fourth quarter. But Robert Barnes intercepted the 2-point conversion pass and returned it 98 yards for two points and a 44-40 OU lead.

NO. 8 OHIO STATE 36, NEBRASKA 31

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — J.K. Dobbins ran for three touchdowns and Dwayne Haskins Jr. passed for two more scores to help Ohio State beat Nebraska.

After Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to JD Spielman to pull within five with 3 minutes left, Dobbins pounded away for two first downs to run out the clock.

Before the late Nebraska score, Dobbins broke through the right side and romped for a 42-yard touchdown with 5 minutes left to give Ohio State (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten, No. 10 CFP) breathing room.

Dobbins rushed for a season-high 163 yards — only his second 100-yard game this season. Running back Mike Weber added 91 yards on the ground.

Martinez threw for 266 yards and touchdown and rushed for two scores for Nebraska (2-7, 1-5).

NO. 10 WASHINGTON STATE 19, CALIFORNIA 13

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Gardner Minshew threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Easop Winston Jr. with 32 seconds left to lift Washington State past California, extending WSU's long-shot quest to crash the College Football Playoff.

Minshew threw for 334 yards for Washington State (8-1, 5-1 Pac-12, No. 8 CFP), which is also seeking its first Pac-12 North title. The Cougars have a 12-game home winning streak, fourth-longest in the nation.

Chase Garbers threw for 127 yards and ran for 67 for Cal (5-4, 2-4).

This is Washington State's first 8-1 start since 2002.

NO. 12 WEST VIRGINIA 42, NO. 15 TEXAS 41

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Will Grier threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Gary Jennings with 16 seconds left, and then ran in the 2-point conversion to lift West Virginia past Texas.

Grier broke his finger on a run to the pylon in the first quarter of a loss to Texas last year, and his winning run came on a similar scramble. But there was no defender near him this time as he held the ball up while crossing the goal line untouched.

The 2-point conversion came moments after Grier connected with David Sills. Texas had called timeout just before the ball was snapped so the Mountaineers had to line up again. Grier dropped back, took a step into the pocket, and then swung out to his left to break for the corner of the end zone.

Grier drove the Mountaineers (7-1, 5-1 Big 12, No. 13 CFP) to the win after Texas grabbed a 41-34 lead on Sam Ehlinger's touchdown throw to Devin Duvernay with 2:34 to play.

Grier finished with 346 yards passing and three touchdowns, two to Sills.

Ehlinger passed for 356 yards and three scores and also ran for a touchdown for Texas (6-3, 4-2, No. 17 CFP), which has lost two in a row.

MISSOURI 38, NO. 13 FLORIDA 17

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Drew Lock picked apart Florida's defense for the second straight year, throwing three touchdown passes to lead Missouri.

Lock completed 24 of 32 passes for 250 yards, with scoring throws to Albert Okwuegbunam, Kam Scott and Emanuel Hall that stunned the Swamp. Fortunately for the Gators (6-3, 4-3 Southeastern Conference), they won't have to face the senior and possible first-round draft pick again.

They might have seen the last of Feleipe Franks, too.

Coach Dan Mullen benched Franks late in the third quarter — the home crowd cheered wildly — and backup Kyle Trask promptly directed a 75-yard touchdown drive in which he converted two fourth downs. Trask found Josh Hammond in the end zone on the second one for a 7-yard score that made it 35-17.

The Tigers (5-4, 1-4) responded with a field goal that essentially sealed their first SEC win of the season and sent fans scrambling for the exits.

ARIZONA STATE 38, NO. 16 UTAH 20

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Manny Wilkins threw three touchdown passes to N'Keal Harry and Arizona State beat Utah, knocking the No. 16 Utes out of sole possession of first place in Pac-12 South.

The Utes (6-3, 4-3 Pac-12) lost quarterback Tyler Huntley to a broken collarbone in the third quarter. The loss snapped Utah's four-game winning streak.

Huntley was injured when he was hit while forcing a throw with 5:33 left in the third quarter. Freshman Jason Shelly replaced him and the offense struggled after that.

Harry caught nine passes for 161 yards, including TD catches of three, 23 and 61 yards. His three TD catches were a career high. Wilkins completed 19 of 24 for 285 yards and three scores with one interception. Eno Benjamin rushed for 175 yards, including a 44-yard TD run that sealed the victory with 4:12 to play. Arizona State (5-4, 3-3) gained 536 yards against a Utah defense that had been ranked No. 1 in the Pac-12.

SMU 45, NO. 17 HOUSTON 31

DALLAS (AP) — Ben Hicks threw for 318 yards and four touchdowns and SMU beat Houston, the second time in three years the Mustangs upset a ranked Cougars team.

The Mustangs (4-5, 3-2 American) never trailed, jumping out to a 17-0 lead after Hicks threw his second TD, a 17-yarder to Tyler Page less than a minute into the second quarter. Houston played its first game as a ranked team under second-year coach Major Applewhite.

Hicks threw three touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in the shocker two years ago, when SMU beat the then-No. 11 Cougars 38-16 and knocked them all of the way out of the poll.

After Houston (7-2, 4-1, No. 17 CFP) got to 38-31 on quarterback D'Eriq King's 3-yard touchdown run with 9:34 left, the Mustangs went on a time-consuming 13-play drive that ended with Ke'Mon Freeman's second touchdown run, an 8-yarder with 2:43 left. That drive was interrupted for about 90 minutes because of lightning and heavy rain. Freeman ran 20 times for 107 yards.

NO. 18 UTAH STATE 56, HAWAII 17

HONOLULU (AP) — Darwin Thompson and Gerold Bright each ran for three touchdowns as Utah State extended its winning streak to eight games.

The Aggies (8-1, 5-0 Mountain West) amassed 601 yards of total offense, including 426 rushing, and had a pair of 28-point quarters to pull away from the Rainbow Warriors (6-5, 3-3).

Thompson rushed 13 times for a career-best 141 yards and scored on a pair of 1-yard runs, as well as a 26-yard sprint. Bright carried a career-high 16 times for 121 yards and found the end zone on runs of 18, 47 and 9 yards.

Jordan Love threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ron'quavion Tarver and ran in a 1-yard score on the final play of the first quarter.

Cole McDonald threw a pair of touchdown passes for Hawaii, which finished with 390 yards of total offense.

PURDUE 38, NO. 19 IOWA 36

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Spencer Evans made a 25-yard field goal with 8 seconds left, lifting Purdue past Iowa and back in the Big Ten's West Division title hunt.

David Blough threw three touchdown passes to Terry Wright and topped the 300-yard mark for the fifth time this season. The Boilermakers (5-4, 4-2 Big Ten) have won five of their last six and beat their third ranked team this season — the first time they've achieved that feat since 2003 — to move within one game of division leader Northwestern.

The Hawkeyes (6-3, 3-3) lost their second straight road game despite Nate Stanley's big day. The junior quarterback threw for 275 yards with one TD and ran for another but the conference's No. 2 scoring defense allowed a season-high point total. And when the Hawkeyes needed one last stop, Blough drove Purdue 43 yards to set up Evans for the winning kick.

NO. 20 FRESNO STATE 48, UNLV 3

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Marcus McMaryion threw for two touchdowns and 274 yards and Fresno State's defense had a near-perfect game.

Fresno State (8-1, 5-0 Mountain West) won its seventh straight and ended its two-game losing streak to the Rebels. The Bulldogs kept their one-game lead in the West Division over San Diego State, which won at New Mexico 31-23 Saturday night.

McMaryion completed 26 of 35 passes and rushed for 39 yards as his defense held UNLV to 175 total yards of offense through three quarters.

KeeSean Johnson had eight receptions for 97 yards to move his streak to 45 consecutive games with a catch. Coming into Saturday, Johnson led the nation in active career receptions at 234.

Fresno State's defense only allowed the Rebels over midfield twice in the first three quarters.

Charles Williams, a Fresno native, was the lone bright spot for UNLV (2-7, 0-5) as he rushed for 121 yards on 16 carries. UNLV's Max Gilliam was 14 of 30 for 98 yards for the Rebels, who will not be bowl eligible due to the loss.

NO. 22 SYRACUSE 41, WAKE FOREST 24

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Eric Dungey rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown, Jarveon Howard ran for two scores and Syracuse beat Wake Forest.

Dungey — whose average of 294.1 total yards per game ranks second in the ACC — was 23 of 35 for 157 yards and also ran for a 26-yard score to help the Orange (7-2, 4-2, No. 19 CFP) win their first game as a Top 25 team since the Dwight Freeney days in 2001.

Moe Neal added an 8-yard score, Chris Elmore had a 5-yard TD run and Andre Szmyt kicked two field goals for Syracuse, which earned its first conference road victory in more than two years.

Sam Hartman was 21 of 37 for 275 yards for the Demon Deacons (4-5, 1-4) with two touchdown passes.

NO. 21 MISSISSIPPI STATE 45, LOUISIANA TECH 3

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Nick Fitzgerald threw for 243 yards and four touchdowns and Mississippi State beat Louisiana Tech.

Mississippi State (6-3, No. 18 CFP) didn't have much trouble, scoring 21 points in the first quarter of what quickly turned into a lopsided game. Fitzgerald completed 17 of 28 passes and threw his touchdowns to Stephen Guidry, Deddrick Thomas, Kylin Hill and Jesse Jackson.

Fitzgerald also ran for 107 yards. Mississippi State has a 16-3 record during Fitzgerald's career when he breaks the 100-yard mark.

Louisiana Tech (6-3) was competitive in a loss to LSU this season, but its second game against a Southeastern Conference opponent didn't go well. J'Mar Smith completed 14 of 30 passes for 98 yards.

NO. 24 BOSTON COLLEGE 31, VIRGINIA TECH 21

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Travis Levy ran for two touchdowns and Boston College beat Virginia Tech to set up a huge home game against Clemson next week.

BC (7-2, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference, No. 22 CFP) limited the Hokies to 32 yards in the third quarter and erased a 14-7 deficit with 21 unanswered points after halftime. First-place in the ACC Atlantic Division will be on the line when the second-ranked Tigers visit Boston College.

Ryan Willis threw for 281 yards with three touchdown passes for Virginia Tech (4-4, 3-2), but the Hokies lost their third straight at home for the first time since 1992. It came on a day when they could have moved into a share of first place in the Coastal Division with a victory.

AUBURN 28, NO. 25 TEXAS A&M 24

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Seth Williams caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jarrett Stidham with 1:41 left and Auburn rallied to beat Texas A&M.

The Tigers (6-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) had a 14-point outburst over the final 5:14 and the defense came up with big stops. Stidham delivered big on both final drives.

Kellen Mond and the Aggies (5-4, 3-3) pushed the ball into Auburn territory on their final drive, converting a fourth-and-5. Then a holding call pushed them back across midfield and Mond's desperation pass into the end zone was incomplete. Officials put a second back on the clock, and Mond was sacked by Nick Coe on the final play.

Nelson e Winnie

Fresno Has The State's Largest Hmong Population. This Group Is Making Sure Their Voices Are Heard      Cache   Translate Page
To get the “I Voted” sticker, you have to understand how the voting process works. And for some refugees in the Valley, it can seem really complicated. Take the Hmong community: Many of the elders fought for the U.S. in the CIA’s secret war in Laos. When they resettled in areas like Fresno, they lacked the tools to become civically engaged. But their kids and grandkids grew up here and now, a group of them are working hard to make sure their elders cast their ballots. To do that, they’re transporting voters and translating propositions. In the week leading up to the election, though, callers with Hmong Innovating Politics, or HIP, spoke to voters in Hmong, Lao and English. They’ve spent weeks contacting Fresno’s Southeast Asian American community to see if voters need any assistance. “The work that we’re doing is important because we speak the language that they do,” says Kathy Vue, who works part-time with HIP. ”There’s a lot of trust when somebody who, you know, speaks Hmong calls

It’s Tuesday, November 6th, 2018. Today, you can’t escape the elections. We hear from two political science professors about the issues on the ballot in Fresno and in Bakersfield. We also talk to one very young city council candidate whose political aspirations go back to the farm worker’s movement. Plus we talk to a group that’s addressing voting barriers for Hmong elders in Fresno, and look at the origins of the “I Voted” sticker. And later, we talk to the documentary filmmakers whose movie, “Free Solo” is showing this week around the Valley. They captured Alex Honnold climbing El Capitan in Yosemite, without any ropes. Listen to the podcast above to hear this week's weekly news and culture magazine, "Valley Edition."

On election day, some students can get extra credit if they show teachers their “I Voted” sticker. Others post selfies on social media with the hashtag #IVotedSelfie. Some people drop off their mail-in ballots just to get the sticker. But, why? What does it mean? Fresno State student Charie Payne says she likes wearing it, especially as an African American woman. “I really cherish and value the history that comes along with the ability to vote because I know the people that came before me worked so hard and endured a lot just for us to be able to vote today, and I don’t take that for granted,” Payne says. For student Veronica Cruz it’s her first time voting. “I look forward to getting it and it also shows that I voted so it could give other people motivation to vote,” the 19-year-old says. Cruz says selfies featuring “I Voted” stickers are all over her social media feeds too. “On SnapChat especially," she says, "I think a lot of people just post their sticker.” Brittney Smith says she

Kentucky Drops One Spot in New AP Football Poll      Cache   Translate Page

The Top 25 teams in The Associated Press college football poll, with first-place votes in parentheses, records through Nov. 3, total points based on 25 points for a first-place vote through one point for a 25th-place vote, and previous ranking:

Top storylines for college football Week 11      Cache   Translate Page
After what transpired around the nation last weekend, the college football Week 11 schedule may seem like somewhat of a let down. But don’t be fooled by the lack of ranked-versus-ranked showdowns — there’s a ton at stake. Starting with a big-time Mountain West battle on Friday night and running through an ACC clash that could tilt playoff rankings, this weekend’s slate of games has plenty of entertainment value. These are the biggest storylines we’ll be watching unfold around college football in Week 11. Friday night Mountain West showdown Fresno State has been flying largely under the radar because it plays in the Mountain West and hasn’t gotten much air time, but these Bulldogs have plenty of bite. Featuring the nation’s second-best scoring defense and a potent offense led by quarterback Marcus McMaryion, Fresno State has rocketed up the rankings on the back of seven straight wins. A trip to Boise is the last huge test for the Bulldogs before the end of the regular season. Many a team has struggled to conq

Identical twin California sisters give birth two hours apart

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Identical twins have given birth about two hours apart from each other.

The Fresno Bee reports Wednesday that BaoKou Yang went into labor first on Sunday. Shortly after, her sister BaoNhia Yang told her she was experiencing pain and "might be in labor with you." BaoKou gave birth at 6:59 p.m. Sunday.

Her sister then delivered at 8:48 p.m.

Both gave birth to daughters who almost were the same weight. The identical twins are from a family of 14 children and say they were inseparable growing up in Fresno. The sisters had bet on who would give first but say they never thought it would be so close since their due dates were two days apart.

They say they're excited that their babies will share a birthday just like them.

Here's where you can legally consume marijuana in the US in 2018      Cache   Translate Page

marijuana protest

The United States is gradually becoming the land of the red, white, and green.

Michigan on Tuesday became the tenth state to legalize marijuana after voters passed Proposition 1, making it the first Midwestern state to legalize the drug.

Four states voted on marijuana legalization measures in Tuesday's midterm elections. Voters in Utah and Missouri also passed initiatives to legalize medical marijuana, though an initiative in North Dakota failed.

Marijuana legalization is sweeping the US: In June, Oklahoma voted to legalize medical marijuana, joining the number of other states that already have medical marijuana laws on the books.

In January, Vermont became the first state to legalize marijuana through the legislature, rather than a ballot initiative, when the governor signed the bill into law.

Support for the drug reached new highs in 2018. A Gallup poll showed that 64% of Americans favor legalization, and even a majority of Republicans back it.

Ten states and Washington, DC have now legalized marijuana for recreational use for adults over the age of 21. And 33 states have legalized medical marijuana, representing roughly one-fifth of the US population.

Here's a summary of where Americans can legally light up — no doctor's letter required — in 2018.

Alaska

Adults 21 and over can light up in Alaska. In early 2015, the northernmost US state made it legal for residents to use, possess, and transport up to an ounce of marijuana — roughly a sandwich bag full — for recreational use. The first pot shop opened for business in late 2016.

Alaska has pounced on the opportunity to make its recreational pot shops a destination for tourists. More than two million people visit Alaska annually and spend $2 billion.

California

It was the first state to legalize medical marijuana back in 1996. California became even more pot-friendly in 2016 when it made it legal to use and carry up to an ounce of marijuana.

The law also permits adults 21 and over to buy up to eight grams of marijuana concentrates, which are found in edibles, and grow no more than six marijuana plants per household.

But not all Californians can legally smoke marijuana, depending on where they live. Many cities in the Central Valley, including Fresno and Bakersfield, have moved to ban recreational sales.

Colorado

In Colorado, there are more marijuana dispensaries than Starbucks and McDonalds locations combined. The state joined Washington in becoming the first two states to fully legalize the drug in 2012.

Residents and tourists over the age of 21 can buy up to one ounce of marijuana or eight grams of concentrates. Some Colorado counties and cities have passed more restrictive laws.

Ohio State remains No. 10 in College Football Playoff rankings, go back to politics: Doug Lesmerises      Cache   Translate Page

The Buckeyes saw Kentucky drop behind them and West Virginia move ahead of them.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- More important things are happening in the world than Ohio State staying No. 10 in the second College Football Playoff rankings, so we're going to keep this short.

If something had really happened to shift the future of the Buckeyes, we'd let you know.

It didn't.

No. 10 in the first rankings last week, the Buckeyes stayed there because they moved past former No. 9 Kentucky (which lost to Georgia), but were jumped by former No. 13 West Virginia (which beat Texas).

Ohio State also remained behind two-loss LSU, which fell from No. 3 to only No. 7 after getting smoked and shutout by No. 1 Alabama. There's a little too much SEC love there.

But it won't matter. As before, the Buckeyes have a playoff path, and if the 12-1 Big Ten champion is either Ohio State or current No. 4 Michigan, that Big Ten champion will probably make the playoff.

It helped the Big Ten some that Michigan State appeared in the rankings at No. 18 after not making it last week. Five Big Ten teams were ranked: No. 4 Michigan, No. 10 Ohio State, No. 18 Michigan State, No. 20 Penn State and No. 21 Iowa.

I have no idea why the 6-3 Hawkeyes are ranked. Too much Big Ten love.

Here's the full playoff top 25, with how the teams moved from the week one to week two rankings.

Please Note: "Place a carbon monoxide alarm with a digital display on a seat in the motor vehicle when you are out driving in emergency snow conditions (or always for that specific). Harmful levels of carbon monoxide (CO) can penetrate inside a motor vehicle just due to prevailing winds and exhaust not moving away from the vehicle but under it. If you want to learn more about carbon monoxide, begin measuring it with a personal CO monitor everywhere you go." Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

We have all been CO poisoned, some more than others
The following link takes you to a site with views from those who have been poisoned. The seriousness of carbon monoxide poisoning, the grief, suffering and disorientations experienced are clearly portrayed with the intent to help others and prevent future poisonings. With respect, please visit: Carbon Monoxide Survivor

What is in the air you are breathing right now?

What will you be doing today; walking into poison?
Who will be responsible for the air you breathe?
You may be the only person who can prevent your own poisoning.
We are all vulnerable to carbon monoxide exposure and poisoning.
Everyone has been poisoned by CO and will be poisoned again. The degree of the poisoning depends upon allowing yourself to be in a situation where someone else controls the air you breathe and the mechanisms for alarming notification.

Please read the alarm information on the package and in the instructions that come with the carbon monoxide alarm. Know that if it is a U.L. 2034 Listed product (or CSA 6.19 Listed), it is a high level alarm that has been tested to alarm no sooner than 70 PPM at the lowest (the alarm must resist for one hour when above this level) and when over 400 PPM before 15 minutes at the highest concentration, after resisting alarming for 4 minutes when over this level.

Know when your fire department and emergency responders begin wearing their breathing apparatus and what their civilian evacuation levels are for carbon monoxide; it may be as soon as the gas is present in your presence. Pregnant women, infants & children, people with heart & respiratory struggles, those suffering depression or chronic headaches and all people of vulnerable health should be alerted as soon as the gas begins to concentrate, around 10 PPM (parts per million) or lower.

You most likely need a low level carbon monoxide detector to sound off when carbon monoxide hazards are just beginning, not after you’ve been exposed to levels that make you have headaches, flu-like symptoms, increased tiredness, heart stresses or worse.

Do not take risks with carbon monoxide. Take responsibility for the air you breathe and the combustion systems you are responsible for. If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for others, unless you think $45.00, high level protection is good enough.

Help prevent injuries and deaths; don’t guess about carbon monoxide. Measure carbon monoxide for safety and knowledge. The more you test the more you learn. GET BUSY

Measurement is continuing education at its best. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

World Health Organization says air pollution is the 'new tobacco'
AccuWeather.com
Air pollution is the “new tobacco,” Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. He warned that the simple act of breathing is killing 7 million people a year and harming billions more. - Nine out of 10 people breathe polluted air, or over 90 percent of the world’s population suffers toxic air. - The world continues to grow in population size, and technologies continue to increasingly pump out dirty emissions. 'Inexplicable': Power plants' pollution limits weak by world standards
The Sydney Morning Herald
Pollution controls for major coal-fired power stations in NSW are so weak that they are comparable to "fairly under-developed third world countries", a US energy expert says. - Dr Ron Sahu, a California-based air quality consultant, said the environment protection licences (EPLs) at the Mt Piper, Eraring and Vales Point plants were "very weak". - “It is inexplicable," said Dr Sahu, who has worked in Kenya, India, the US and China. "Your neighbouring drycleaner [in the US] would have a stronger licence, and I’m only half exaggerating.” (More)

Getting to Know You: A Big Red Halloween      Cache   Translate Page
A column dedicated to the folks in the pews. Written by Dale Buchanan It is Wednesday, October 31, and Halloween is here. Gayle has volunteered to help with serving snacks at the Big Red neighborhood party. As we drive, yours truly is reminiscing about Halloween in his childhood. I grew up in a village seven miles north of Fresno. Halloween was exclusively for children and celebrated in the pleasant autumn streets. There were no sidewalks and no street lights. The only part adults played was to provide candy and be the recipients of our tricks. I remembered that in those days “trick or treat” was more than a polite request. It was understood that those laughing spooks and goblins were actually threatening a trick if there was no treat. This old man smiled in delight as memories of tricks played were recalled as the children of Hi-way City for one night of the year turned our ramshackle village into a magic place where we ruled. The Halloween party was scheduled from five to eight p.m. Gayle and I strolled in right at four p.m. She went straight to the kitchen for her marching orders. I went into the Fellowship Hall, found an out-of-the-way place, pulled out my pen and notebook, and watched the evening unfold. My first observation was that a whole lot of preparation was going into this party. My second realization was the presence of what I call “The People of the Pews.” They were busy as bees—organized and efficient. They were in fact a great functioning crew—diverse, happy, and above all each and every one working. This reporter remains amazed at the involvement of the number of Big Red congregants who step out of the pews to serve the church and the community. The primary focus of this weekly report is on individual members and their stories. However, there are many activities that require a group effort and our dedicated pew people are experts in these social activities. My reluctance turned to delight as I watched these talented folks combine their respective talents to make Halloween happen at the Big Red Church. At just five p.m. costumed children of all ages, along with their smiling and costumed parents, began to arrive. Traditional Halloween decorations provided a fun atmosphere. The assigned crew members assumed their positions at the serving tables and began to serve the excited children and their happy parents. From where I sat near an open door, I could hear the strains of spooky music playing. I stopped a busy crew member and inquired. The hurried answer was, “Oh, the organ is haunted.”  This I had to see. I stepped outside and heard our pipe organ pealing out traditional haunted music. I walked in the sanctuary and there was our beautiful pipe organ covered in spider webs and being played flawlessly by a grinning skeleton. His legs were lying on the floor, his boney fingers were poised above the keys, and the organ magically produced the haunting sounds of Halloween. Everyone who walked in—from toddlers to seniors—was spellbound. Meanwhile, back in the Fellowship Hall, the little […]
