Is The Anti-Iran Front Still Viable?      Cache   Translate Page

Israel’s current preoccupation with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and the Jamal Khashoggi murder in Istanbul, have diverted attention from the nefarious activities carried out by the Islamic Republic of Iran throughout the Middle East, and particularly in Syria.  For now, the above developments have put on hold the anti-Iran alliance the Trump administration has been pressing for last month, and has given the Iranian regime a respite.  The downing of the Russian spy plane over Syria by the Assad regime, which was initially blamed on Israel, has impacted somehow on the previous understanding between Israel and Putin’s Russia.  In the meantime, Russia has supplied the Assad regime with the S-300 Missile defense system. Israel has significantly reduced its operations in Syria, which enabled Iran to increase its activities inside Syria, and foment trouble in Gaza.

The recently imposed U.S. sanctions against Iran have had a deleterious impact on the Iranian economy.  It has placed the regime of the Ayatollahs in a defensive mode.  A second wave of U.S. sanctions commenced on November 5th, 2018, targeting Iran’s energy, shipping, and shipbuilding sectors, as well as transactions with the Central Bank of Iran.  The aim of this set of sanctions is to deprive the Iranian regime of funds to advance their nuclear program, and the development of ballistic missiles.  The Iranian people, in an unprecedented wave of protests that spread throughout Iran’s major cities, and in spite of severe consequences, demanded that the regime invest in Iran, and the Iranian people.  The protesters charged the regime with enabling the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) to waste the nation’s oil revenue and the $150 billion it received as a “bonus” from the Obama administration (for agreeing to sign the nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) on imperial schemes.  They have argued that the money should be invested at home instead of spending it in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and Yemen.

The Saudi-Qatari rift has also hampered the creation of a unified anti-Iranian bloc.  It has weakened the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).  The Qataris are now allied with Turkey.  Ankara has sent an expeditionary force of 3,000 strong to Doha and in return, received $15 billion from Qatar to cover its swollen debt.  The Saudis have accused Qatar of supporting terrorism, and in fact the Doha regime has been a staunch supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, including Hamas in Gaza.  Turkey’s dictator, Erdogan, has been flirting with Russia and Iran, and has openly exhibited his anti-western sentiments.  He has purchased from Russia the S-400 surface-to-air missiles, and helped Iran launder its oil revenue.  In the initial Trump administration calculation, Turkey was meant to be a part of the anti-Iran coalition, along with Israel and the Gulf states.  Instead, Erdogan is currently busy with embarrassing the Saudis over the Khashoggi murder at the Saudi embassy in Istanbul.

The Islamic Republic is worried that the U.S. might join Israel in its efforts to expel the Iranian extensive presence in Syria.  Iran however, is using this window of opportunity when Israel is limiting its attacks on Iranian targets in Syria, and the U.S. being preoccupied with the mid-term elections, to provide Hezbollah with sophisticated guidance systems that would improve the accuracy of the missiles aimed at Israel.  According to a western intelligence officer, “The Iranians are trying to come up with new ways and routes to smuggle weapons from Iran to its allies in the Middle East, testing and defying the West’s abilities to track them down.”

For too long, the U.S. refrained from confronting the Iranian regime, out of hope that inaction against the Iranian regime would empower the purported moderates in Tehran.  The previous U.S. administration also held an overriding desire to wash its hands of the Middle East.  This entrenchment however, has only encouraged the Ayatollahs regime inherently maligned behavior, including its periodic testing to the limits of the nuclear deal, continued progress on advanced centrifuges, ballistic missile testing, and regional expansion.  In addition, the Tehran regime supports terrorism and the propagation of virulent anti-American ideology.  Ironically, many of these actions make the regime increasingly unpopular at home, and overextended abroad.

According to the U.S. State Department Executive Summary report titled “An Outlaw Regime: A Chronicle of Iran’s Destructive Activities, “The regime’s primary tool to execute this mission since 1979 has been the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC is the most powerful conglomerate in Iran, spreading and consolidating its control over much of Iranian life. Its navy regularly threatens freedom of navigation in the Persian Gulf while its Aerospace Force directs the country’s ballistic missile program in defiance of Security Council resolutions. Its Ground Forces are deployed abroad to bolster the Assad regime and its Basij paramilitary force is mobilized at home to surveil and harass ordinary Iranians. Finally, its extra-territorial IRGC Quds Force (IRGC-QF) leads the Islamic Republic’s destabilizing support for proxies and terrorist groups.”

The Islamic Republic’s illicit activities include undermining the integrity of the global financial system.  The Iranian regime relies on opaque and fraudulent financing activities to fund its proxies and support its proliferation of ballistic missiles and other weapons.  Last year, the IRGC-Quds Force was exposed for using front companies to move funds, procure restricted materials and technologies, exploit currency exchange networks in neighboring countries, and produce counterfeit currency.

Iran’s repeated and systemic abuse of human rights is in violation of international laws and norms.  It persecutes civil society activists and marginalizes ethnic and religious minorities.  The Ayatollah regime denies due process, and regularly falls short of its own legal standards. Its prisons are notorious for mistreatment and torture, and its use of capital punishment is excessive and extends to minors.  Outside its borders, Iran and its proxies have committed numerous human rights abuses, including targeting innocent civilians in Syria, and arbitrarily detaining Sunnis in Iraq.

Last September in New York, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with the foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain, to advance what the administration coined as the “Arab NATO.”  Secretary Pompeo stressed the need to defeat the Islamic State, and other terrorist organizations, as well as ending the conflicts in Syria and Yemen, and “stopping Iran’s malign activity in the region.”  Unfortunately, President Trump’s willingness to remain engaged in the Middle East following the defeat of the Islamic State is questionable.  The burden of compelling Iran to roll back its regional presence, especially in Syria, and interdicting Iran’s military supplies to Hezbollah in Lebanon, falls primarily on Israel’s shoulders.  Saudi Arabia and the Emirates are involved in confronting Iran’s weapons proliferation in Yemen.  U.S. involvement in the anti-Iran alliance is limited to partnering with the Kurds on the ground in Syria and Iraq.  The latter presents a significant obstacle to Iran’s ambitions to dominate both Syria and Iraq.

Without strong military backing from the U.S., Israel might be constrained by Russia from freely operating in Syria against Iran.  The Khashoggi murder, as contemptible as it was, must be put behind us, and allow the Saudis and the UAE to focus on Iran.  The rest of the Sunni Arab states are unlikely to contribute to the anti-Iran alliance, and Turkey’s support in such an alliance is certainly not forthcoming.  The U.S. envisioned anti-Iran coalition can only become a viable reality if the U.S. is ready to actively participate, and commit its military might only when it becomes necessary.

Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa

With news reports in Turkey on Sunday morning claiming that murdered journalist Jamal Khahsoggi’s body had been transported in suitcases from Istanbul, another major news story developing in the Middle East threatens to undo peace in the region, according to BBC.

Sheikh Ali Salman, who is the most important opposition leader in Bahrain, an Islamic country ruled by a royal family not wholly different from Saudi Arabia, has been imprisoned for life after being accused of spying for Qatar.

Middle Eastern allies Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the UAE cut off economic ties with Qatar last year after claiming that the country was funding terrorist groups in collaboration with Iran. Although Qatar denies the claims vigorously, Bahrain’s public prosecutor said that the country intends to overthrow their constitutional order and “colluded” with Sheikh Ali Salman to reach that end.

A última vitória de Ayrton Senna foi há 25 anos      Cache   Translate Page
The 1993 Australian Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at Adelaide on 7 November 1993. It was the final round of the 1993 Formula One season.
Ayrton Senna finished his six-year spell with McLaren (before joining Williams for 1994) by taking his only pole position of the season (the only pole for the season not won by Williams drivers), and his fifth victory of the year. It was the last race that Senna won. This was the last race for cars with active suspension, which was banned from the 1994 season. Having taken his actively suspended Lotus 99T-Honda to victory in the 1987 Monaco Grand Prix, Senna was the first and the last driver to win a race driving an active suspension car.
It was the last race for four-time World Champion Alain Prost. Senna was so overcome with emotion, knowing his great rival was retiring, that he embraced Prost on top of the rostrum. (Prost's contract with Williams initially included a clause forbidding Senna from joining the team as his team-mate). Riccardo Patrese and Derek Warwick also retired from Formula One after this event, the former having competed in 256 Grands Prix (a record that stood for fifteen years until being beaten by Rubens Barrichello), and the latter signing off on a return year after two seasons' absence from the sport.
Two of the sport's more prominent sponsors withdrew from Formula One after this race. The Williams team's association with both Canon, which had started in 1984, and Camel led to the retirement of one of the sport's more iconic liveries; the famous Williams white, red, yellow and blue colour scheme being replaced by the blue and white of the Rothmans cigarette brand for 1994. Camel's withdrawal also meant the Benetton team were obliged to switch to sponsorship from Japanese cigarette brand Mild Seven for the following season. Canon would not reappear as a Formula One sponsor until the 2009 Singapore Grand Prix, in which the logos appeared on the flanks of the Brawn GP team's cars.

Yemeni Forces Kill, Arrest Dozens of Saudi-led Mercenaries in Al-Baydaa: Military Spokesman
November 5, 2018
The Yemeni army and popular committees managed to kill, injure or arrest scores of the Saudi-led mercenaries after carrying out a special operation against their sites in the central province of Al-Baydaa, according to a military spokesman.
General Yehya Saree’a added that the Yemeni army and popular committees destroyed and seized a large number of vehicles for the mercenaries during the operation which claimed major commanders among the Saudi-led forces.
Yemen has been since March 2015 under a brutal aggression by Saudi-led coalition, in a bid to restore power to fugitive former president Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.
Tens of thousands of Yemenis have been injured and martyred in Saudi-led strikes, with the vast majority of them are civilians.
However, the allied forces of the Yemeni army and popular committees established by Ansarullah revolutionaries have been heroically confronting the aggression with all means, inflicting huge losses upon Saudi-led forces.
The Saudi-led coalition – which also includes UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Sudan and Kuwait – has been also imposing a blockade on the impoverished country’s ports and airports as a part of the aggression.

Yemeni Forces Repel Saudi-led Renewed Offensive on Hodeidah

November 5, 2018
hodeidah
Yemeni forces managed to repel a wide-scale offensive by the Saudi-led coalition on the port city of Hodeidah, inflicting losses upon the aggression forces on Sunday.
Spokesman of Yemeni armed forces Brigadier General Yehya Sarih said that aggression forces were inflicted heavy losses in the last 24 hours, noting that the number of those killed in the foiled offensive surpassed 200.
Dozens of vehicles were also destroyed by the Yemeni forces, Sarih said, pointing out to the intensified strikes by the Saudi-led coalition.
The Saudi-led warplanes waged more than 65 airstrikes on al-Mandhar, Hodeidah airport, Killo-16 in al-Duraihmi district, Yemeni media reported.
“Committed to Escalation”
On Monday, the Saudi-led coalition claimed it was “committed to de-escalating hostilities” in the Arab impoverished country.
“The coalition is committed to de-escalating hostilities in Yemen and is strongly supportive of the UN envoy’s political process,” a source in the Saudi-led coalition told AFP on condition of anonymity.
The coalition’s remarks come few days after US officials were talking about halting the war on Yemen.
US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the US had been watching the conflict “for long enough,” and that he believed Saudi Arabia and the UAE were “ready” for talks.
Mattis’ call was later echoed by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who urged the coalition to stop airstrikes in Yemen’s populated areas, saying the “time is now for the cessation of hostilities.”
“Escalation Evidence of US Remarks Falseness”
For his part, Head of the Supreme Revolutionary Committee, Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, on Monday considered the military escalation an attempt to hinder any talks aimed at stopping the war and bringing peace.
“This escalation is evidence of the falseness of US statements demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities, while it is the actual commander in the war ” al-Houthi said in a statement.
He added that when the coalition countries failed to achieve any victory in the western coast, they started to bomb the residential neighborhoods in Hodeidah city committing new massacres against civilians, including women and children.
“It was customary to have a military escalation following any US statement of peace or talk about the humanitarian side,” al-Houthi said.

Netanyahu secretly met Omani FM in Germany — report-Israeli TV says February talks helped pave way for PM’s visit to Muscat; discussion said to have focused on Iran, advancing bilateral ties-By TOI staff-6 November 2018

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met secretly with Oman’s foreign minister in February, helping lay the foundations for the premier’s visit to the Gulf sultanate last month, Israeli television reported Friday,According to Channel 10 news, Netanyahu’s meeting with Yusuf bin Alawi was held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, a major gathering of top political and defense leaders from across the world. The meeting was put together by Mossad head Yossi Cohen who played the lead role in the contacts between Israel and Oman, the report said. The report, which cited an unnamed senior Israeli official, said the meeting was the first between Israeli and Omani political figures since the Mossad-led outreach to Oman began in April 2017.The official told the network Netanyahu and bin Alawi discussed Iran and advancing ties between the countries.Like most Arab states, Israel and Oman do not have formal diplomatic relations, though officials from the two countries have previously met.Netanyahu’s surprise visit to Muscat in October to meet with Omani Sultan Qaboos bin Said was the first of its kind by an Israeli leader in over two decades and highlighted the growing thaw between Israel and Gulf states. The Prime Minister’s Office said after the trip Netanyahu and his wife Sara were invited to the Omani capital by Qaboos “after lengthy contacts between the two countries.”Israel and Oman said in a joint statement the two leaders discussed “ways to advance the peace process in the Middle East as well as several matters of joint interest regarding the achievement of peace and stability in the Middle East.”Though neither country directly mentioned Iran in statements after the meeting, analysts noted Oman could serve as a backdoor channel to Tehran.Though a member of the Saudi-dominated Gulf Cooperation Council, Oman has stayed out of the rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia and often acted as a regional mediator. It notably hosted secret talks between US and Iranian officials that helped lead to the 2015 nuclear deal curbing Tehran’s nuclear program, an agreement strongly opposed by Netanyahu. The Channel 10 report said neither Israel nor Oman informed the United States of their warming diplomatic ties. The meeting between Netanyahu and Qaboos was welcomed by the White House, with an envoy for US President Donald Trump saying it was a “helpful step for our peace efforts.”Following the meeting in Oman, bin Alawi urged other Middle East states to accept Israel and said the country would help promote peace efforts between Israel and the Palestinians.Speaking at the same conference, Bahraini Foreign Minister Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa expressed backing for Oman’s efforts to promote Israeli-Palestinian peace, and Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said peace talks would help normalize diplomatic ties between Israel and the Arab world, according to Reuters.Bin Alawi this week travelled to the West Bank city of Ramallah to update Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas on the meeting between Qaboos and Netanyahu.Palestinian officials have largely remained silent on Netanyahu’s trip to Muscat, though top negotiator Saeb Erekat said the Arab world should remain committed to the Arab Peace Initiative. The proposal offers a normalization of diplomatic ties and a formal end to the Israeli-Arab conflict in exchange for the establishment of a Palestinian state on the so-called 1967 lines and a “just” solution to the refugee issue.Israel has previously offered support for some of the initiative’s tenets but balked at others pertaining to refugees and returning the Golan Heights to Syrian control.

Khashoggi killing: Erdogan accuses ‘highest levels’ of Saudi gov’t-Turkish president criticizes authorities in Riyadh for refusing to answer key questions about journalist’s murder-By AFP-NOV 6,18

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the order to murder Jamal Khashoggi came from “the highest levels” of the Saudi government Friday as he promised no let-up in the hunt for his killers.A month on from Khashoggi’s murder in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Erdogan said he did “not believe for a second” that King Salman was to blame. But he pointedly failed to absolve Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of responsibility for unleashing a “death squad” against the outspoken Saudi journalist whose death has badly tainted the kingdom’s de facto ruler. And in an editorial for Khashoggi’s former employer, The Washington Post, Erdogan accused authorities in Riyadh of refusing to answer key questions about the murder, despite their arrest of 18 suspects a fortnight ago.Erdogan’s comments came shortly after one of his top lieutenants charged that Khashoggi’s dismembered body was “dissolved” in the consulate as part of an effort to leave no trace of the killing.“Over the course of the past month, Turkey has moved heaven and earth to shed light on all aspects of this case. As a result of our efforts, the world has learned that Khashoggi was killed in cold blood by a death squad, and it has been established that his murder was premeditated,” Erdogan wrote in The Post.“We know that the perpetrators are among the 18 suspects detained in Saudi Arabia. We also know that those individuals came to carry out their orders: Kill Khashoggi and leave. Finally, we know that the order to kill Khashoggi came from the highest levels of the Saudi government.”But he said his government would keep asking other questions “the Saudi authorities have refused to answer”, such as the whereabouts of Khashoggi’s body and who ordered his assassination. The murder of the royal insider-turned-dissident has provoked widespread outrage and sharp criticism from Washington, usually the staunchest of allies. While President Donald Trump has ruled out halting arms deal with Riyadh as a punishment, his administration has effectively withdrawn support for the Saudi-led coalition’s war in Yemen in a stark illustration of the cooling of ties.Addressing mourners at a memorial service in Washington on Friday, the murdered journalist’s fiancee called on Trump to back Turkey’s efforts to investigate his death.“I would like to send this message to Mr Trump: I would like him to support Turkey’s legal efforts in trying to bring light to the situation and to discover the whereabouts of his body,” Hatice Cengiz said in a recorded message.Turkey’s chief prosecutor said this week that Khashoggi was strangled as soon as he entered the consulate and also confirmed the body was dismembered.Yasin Aktay, an advisor to Erdogan, hinted in an article published on Friday that the body may even have been destroyed in acid.“We now see that it wasn’t just cut up, they got rid of the body by dissolving it,” an official in Turkey’s ruling party, he told the Hurriyet newspaper.“According to the latest information we have, the reason they cut up the body is it was easier to dissolve it.”A Turkish official has previously told The Post that “biological evidence” found in the consulate garden indicated the body was likely disposed of near the murder scene.Saudi authorities have denied Turkish police permission to search a well in the garden, but allowed them to take water samples for analysis, according to local reports. The murder has strained the decades-old alliance between the United States and Saudi Arabia, with Trump calling it “one of the worst cover-ups in history”.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose country shares Riyadh’s hostility to Iran, condemned the murder but stressed the need for stability in Saudi Arabia.“It is very important for the stability of the world, for the region and for the world, that Saudi Arabia remain stable,” Netanyahu told reporters Friday on a visit to Bulgaria. After initially insisting Khashoggi left the consulate unharmed, then saying he died in a brawl during an interview gone wrong, the Saudi regime admitted he was killed, blaming a “rogue operation”.The crown prince has denounced the murder as “repulsive” and denied any involvement.

Toronto police release remains of Bruce McArthur's alleged victims to families-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-November 6, 2018

Toronto police say some of the men believed to be victims of alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur can now be laid to rest.Acting Insp. Hank Idsinga says investigators have released some of the remains of the eight men found buried at and near a Toronto home where McArthur used to work as a landscaper.Idsinga declined to say exactly how many sets of remains have been released, calling the effort a "work in progress" that he hopes concludes "sooner than later."McArthur, 67, stands accused of killing eight men, most of whom had with ties to Toronto's gay community between 2010 and 2017.They are: Skandaraj Navaratnam, 40, Andrew Kinsman, 49, Selim Esen, 44, and Abdulbasir Faizi, 44. Bottom row, from left to right: Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam, 37, Dean Lisowick, 47, Soroush Mahmudi, 50, and Majeed Kayhan, 58.Investigators spent months recovering and identifying the remains, which were found in planters and a ravine near the home.Police also sifted through past cases and combed other properties as part of their probe, but Idsinga has previously said that there is currently no evidence to suggest any additional alleged victims.

GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

B.C. wildfire action plan focuses on collaboration with First Nations-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-November 6, 2018

After two record-breaking wildfire seasons, the B.C. government released a new plan this week to improve emergency management.A large focus of the action plan is working with First Nation communities, said Doug Donaldson, B.C.'s Minister of Forests. These communities can provide resources in several ways, including their knowledge of burn areas and manpower. The plan commits to creating a new dedicated First Nations coordination operational staff with opportunities for First Nations and emergency managers to discuss strategies, and to provide training and public education resources to better support the needs of First Nation communities. The new action plan includes strategies to anticipate areas most at risk for fire, and to organize multiple resources quickly during the peak of wildfire season."When fires actually broke out in nearby communities we would have the incident management team come in and right away meet with First Nations… to incorporate local knowledge into the fire action plan,"  Donaldson told All Points West host Robyn Burns."In the past, those meetings would take perhaps seven days to get underway."Training communities-Communities in wildfire-affected areas will be trained in prevention and safety practices through the Community Resiliency Investment Program to mitigate risk of damage to homes, according to Donaldson.Prescribed burns are also included in the report and he said they plan to make more progress with this practice than in the past."We're looking at a multi-year prescribed burning project, and that includes assessing the training required both within our own staff… but also increased capacity within communities to be able to do that," he said.Recovery of the land and local economies are outlined in the report with plans for reforestation, expedited cutting permits for salvageable timber, and ensuring the annual allowable cut is proportional to the affected supply. With files from All Points West.

Iran’s Khamenei: Trump has ‘disgraced’ US prestige-Lashing out at Washington days before sanctions to be reimposed, supreme leader says America is in decline and will be the ultimate loser against Islamic republic-By Agencies-TOI-NOV 6,18

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Saturday that US President Donald Trump has “disgraced” US prestige and would be the ultimate loser from renewing sanctions on the Islamic republic.“This new US president… has disgraced the remnant of America’s prestige and that of liberal democracy. America’s hard power, that is to say their economic and military power, is declining too,” he said on his Persian Twitter account, quoting a speech in Tehran.A defiant Khamenei dismissed the renewed US sanctions — including an oil embargo — that take effect on Monday.“The challenge between the US and Iran has lasted for 40 years so far and the US has made various efforts against us: military, economic and media warfare,” he said.“There’s a key fact here: in this 40-year challenge, the defeated is the US and the victorious is the Islamic republic.”On Friday, the Trump administration restored US sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, but carved out exemptions for eight countries that can still import oil from the Islamic Republic without penalty. The sanctions take effect Monday and cover Iran’s shipping, financial and energy sectors. They are the second batch the administration has re-imposed since Trump withdrew from the landmark accord in May.The 2015 deal, one of former president Barack Obama’s biggest diplomatic achievements, gave Iran billions of dollars in sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program, which many believed it was using to develop atomic weapons. Trump repeatedly denounced the agreement as the “worst ever” negotiated by the United States and said it gave Iran too much in return for too little. In a statement issued Friday night, Trump said, “Our objective is to force the regime into a clear choice: either abandon its destructive behavior or continue down the path toward economic disaster.”Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the sanctions are “aimed at fundamentally altering the behavior of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He has issued a list of 12 demands that Iran must meet to get the sanctions lifted that include an end to its support for terrorism and military engagement in Syria and a halt to nuclear and ballistic missile development. He said US allies such as Turkey, Italy, India, Japan and South Korea will receive temporary waivers allowing them to continue to import Iranian petroleum products as they move to end such imports entirely. But proponents as well as the other parties to the deal — Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the European Union — have vehemently defended it. The Europeans have mounted a drive to save the agreement without the US, fearing that the new sanctions will drive Iran to pull out and resume all of its nuclear work.Friday’s announcement comes just days before congressional midterm elections in the US, allowing Trump to highlight his decision to withdraw from the deal — a move that was popular among Republicans.Washington says it wants a new deal with Iran, curtailing its regional interventions and missile program — demands which have been flatly rejected by Tehran.

Iran inaugurates production line of local fighter jets ahead of US sanctions-Defense minister says domestically made Kowsar aircraft symbolizes Islamic Republic’s battle against ‘global ‘arrogance’ led by the US-By TOI staff-NOV 6,18

Iran on Saturday inaugurated the production line of its domestically produced fighter jet, a day after the Trump administration announced the reimposition of remaining US sanctions on Tehran to ramp up economic pressure on the Islamic Republic.Defense Minister Gen. Amir Hatami said the production line highlighted the capabilities of Iranian experts despite “sanctions by enemies,” according to state-run news outlet Press TV.Hatami said inaugurating production of the Kowsar fighter was “the very symbol of fighting the [global] arrogance and standing against the excessive demands of the imperial system, which is being led by the Great Satan, the United States.”Speaking at an industrial complex in the Isfahan province, Hatami added that the “fourth-generation” fighter, with “advanced maneuvering capability” and multi-purpose radar would be service the entire Iranian Air Force “soon.”Hatamui’s announcement comes days before the US sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal were set to be reimposed on the Islamic Republic. The sanctions take effect Monday and cover Iran’s shipping, financial and energy sectors. They are the second batch the administration has reimposed since Trump withdrew from the international accord in May.Iran promotion of HESA Kowsar upgrade assembly line; extending service life for the F-5E/F Tiger II type aircraft, originally built by Northrop and exported to Iran during the mid 1970's. pic.twitter.com/lMDVJ496MS— Mark Pyruz (@INTELonIRAN) November 3, 2018-The US has sold hundreds of billions of dollars of weapons to Iran’s regional rivals, and says the reimposition of the crippling sanctions is a bid to force Tehran to end its military deployments and support for militias in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon, and elsewhere in the region.Iran unveiled the Kowsar fighter in August, but analysts quickly noted similarities between the Iranian jet and the American F-5 fighter, made by Northrop-Grumman in the 1950s, and expressed doubts that the plane was actually new.At the time, state TV said the Kowsar had already been through successful testing and showed footage of the plane on the runway, though the broadcast stopped before the plane took off.The F-5 was sold to Iran in the 1960s and first entered operation in the Iranian Imperial Air Force in 1965. In the West, the F-5 line of jets is mostly used for training purposes.Iran has already used the F-5 platform — and, some observers suggest, actual parts from its aging fleet of non-flying F-5s — to develop its newer jets. The Saeqeh, first flown in 2004, was one such plane. In 2013, Iran unveiled its “first,” domestically-made fighter jet, the Qaher F313, but it was quickly derided by numerous experts in the West who said the plane was actually a plastic model, and was unable to fly.

European signatories to Iran nuclear deal condemn new US sanctions-France, UK, Germany and EU ‘deeply regret’ American measures, call accord ‘essential for the security of Europe, the region and the whole world’-By AFP-5 November 2018

PARIS — France, Germany, Britain and the European Union issued a joint condemnation Friday of the US move to place fresh sanctions on the Iranian economy, vowing to protect European companies doing “legitimate” business with Tehran.“We deeply regret the reimposition of sanctions by the United States stemming from their withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action,” the statement said in reference to the hard-fought 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.Struck between world powers and Tehran after years of fraught negotiations, the deal was aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear capabilities in exchange for sanctions relief. But US President Donald Trump announced in May that he was walking away from the deal and would reimpose sanctions, leaving the EU scrambling to protect companies that have forged trade links with Iran.Friday’s statement from EU nations defended the deal as “essential for the security of Europe, the region and the whole world.”“Our objective is to protect European economic actors involved in legitimate commercial trade with Iran,” it added.Europe will also seek to “maintain financial channels operational with Iran and to ensure the continuation of Iranian oil and gas exports,” it said.US officials said Friday that Washington was adding 700 individuals and entities to its Iran blacklist and pressuring the global SWIFT banking network to cut off Tehran when expanded sanctions are put in place next week.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the sanctions were aimed at getting Tehran to halt its nuclear activities and what the US says is broad support for terrorism in the region. The EU says 12 consecutive reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency show that Iran has stuck to the terms of the deal.

US reimposes all sanctions on Iran lifted under nuclear deal-Pompeo says new measures aimed at forcing Tehran to give up ‘its well-documented outlaw activities,’ grants temporary waivers to 8 countries-By Matthew Lee-TOI-5 November 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration on Friday announced the reimposition of all US sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, ramping up economic pressure on the Islamic Republic as President Donald Trump completed the unraveling of what had been one of his predecessor’s signature foreign policy achievements. The sanctions, which will take effect on Monday, cover Iran’s shipping, financial and energy sectors and are the second batch the administration has reimposed since Trump withdrew from the landmark accord in May. The rollback ends US participation in the nuclear deal, which now hangs in the balance as Iran no longer enjoys any relief from sanctions imposed by the world’s largest economy.Shortly after the announcement, Trump tweeted a movie poster-like image of himself walking out of what appears to be fog with the phrase “Sanctions are Coming, November 5.”With limited exceptions, the sanctions will hit countries that do not stop importing Iranian oil and foreign firms that do business with blacklisted Iranian entities, including its central bank, a number of private financial institutions, and state-run port and shipping firms, as well as hundreds of individual Iranian officials.pic.twitter.com/nk2vKvHuaL— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 2, 2018-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the sanctions are “aimed at fundamentally altering the behavior of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He has issued a list of 12 demands that Iran must meet if it wants the sanctions lifted. Those include ending support for terrorism and military engagement in Syria and a complete halt to its nuclear and ballistic missile development.“Our ultimate aim is to compel Iran to permanently abandon its well-documented outlaw activities and behave as a normal country,” Pompeo told reporters in a conference call with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. “Maximum pressure means maximum pressure.”Pompeo said eight nations will receive temporary waivers allowing them to continue to import Iranian petroleum products for a limited period as they move to end such imports entirely. He said those countries, which other officials said would include US allies such as Turkey, Italy, India, Japan and South Korea, had made efforts to eliminate their imports but could not complete the task by Monday. The waivers, expected to be announced Monday, will be valid for six months, during which time the importing country can buy Iranian oil but must deposit Iran’s revenue in an escrow account. Iran can spend the money but only on a narrow range of humanitarian items. Pompeo said two of the eight countries would wind down imports to zero within weeks.Mnuchin said 700 more Iranian companies and people would be added to the sanctions rolls. Those, he said, would include more than 300 that had not been included under previous sanctions.“We are sending a very clear message with our maximum pressure campaign: that the US intends to aggressively enforce our sanctions,” he said.Iran hawks in Congress and elsewhere were likely to be disappointed in the sanctions as they had been pushing for no oil import waivers as well as the complete disconnection of Iran from the main international financial messaging network known as SWIFT.One group that has been highly critical of the deal welcomed the new sanctions but said there should be no exceptions.“We encourage the Trump administration to fulfill the promise of a maximum pressure campaign — no exceptions — until Iran permanently and verifiably changes its behavior,” United Against a Nuclear Iran said in a statement. “Oil and gas firms, including those from friendly countries like India, South Korea and Japan, should not be granted sanctions waivers. Similarly, financial entities — including SWIFT — must sever ties with Iranian banks and financial institutions.”Mnuchin defended the decision to allow some Iranian banks to remain connected to SWIFT, saying that the Belgium-based firm had been warned that it will face penalties if sanctioned institutions are permitted to use it. And, he said that US regulators would be watching closely Iranian transactions that use SWIFT to ensure any that run afoul of US sanctions would be punished.Pompeo, meanwhile, defended the oil waivers, saying US efforts to cut Iran’s petroleum revenue had already been successful. He noted that since May, when the US began to press countries to stop buying Iranian oil, Iran’s exports had dropped by more than 1 million barrels per day.Pompeo and Mnuchin both said the sanctions will have exceptions for humanitarian purchases. The 2015 nuclear deal, one of former president Barack Obama’s signature foreign policy achievements, gave Iran billions of dollars in sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program, which many believed it was using to develop atomic weapons. Trump repeatedly denounced the agreement as the “worst ever” negotiated by the United States and vowed to withdraw from it during the 2016 presidential campaign.Trump and other critics of the deal said it gave Iran too much in return for too little, allowed Iran to gradually resume nuclear activity that could eventually be used for weapons development and did not address any of the country’s other problematic activities.Obama-era officials as well as the other parties to the deal — Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the European Union — have vehemently defended it. The Europeans have mounted a drive to save the agreement from the US withdrawal, fearing that the new sanctions will drive Iran to pull out and resume all of its nuclear work.

New defence for Infowars in copyright case? "Pepe the Toad"-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-November 5, 2018

The internet trolls who turned Pepe the Frog into a hate symbol may be disappointed to hear a new claim about the cartoon character's origins, courtesy of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' Infowars website .Infowars' attorneys claim in a court filing Thursday that Pepe the Frog creator Matt Furie based his character on a "pre-existing, strikingly similar" Argentine cartoon character named "El Sapo Pepe," or "Pepe the Toad."That's a new defence for Infowars against a copyright infringement lawsuit that Furie filed in March over the site's sales of a poster copying the character.Infowars' attorneys argue Furie could be precluded from asserting any copyright interest in his creation if Pepe the Frog is an "unauthorized derivative work" based on Pepe the Toad. Or it could "at least severely the scope of copyright protection in the character," they wrote."You've got to ask yourself if Mr. Furie's work is truly original," Infowars attorney Marc Randazza said during a telephone interview Friday. "I think it's at least worth taking a closer look."Louis Tompros, one of Furie's attorneys, said the California-based cartoonist had never heard of "El Sapo Pepe" before receiving a letter from Infowars's attorneys about it."So, it definitely did not inspire his creation of Pepe,' Tompros wrote in an email Friday.A federal judge set a July 2019 trial date for the lawsuit Furie filed against Infowars in Los Angeles. It was the second such case that Furie has brought as part of a legal campaign to reclaim his creation.Infowars' website is the online platform for right-wing radio host Jones. Furie's lawsuit says he didn't authorize the site to sell a poster that depicts the anthropomorphic frog alongside images of Jones, President Donald Trump, far-right agitator Milo Yiannopoulos and other right-wing figures.Jones has described the lawsuit as a "publicity stunt" and said he views it as an expression of political speech protected by the First Amendment."My listeners understand this is all frivolous," Jones told The Associated Press in March.Infowars was selling the Pepe-adorned "MAGA" poster for $29.95 and says it was created by "renowned artist and patriot" Jon Allen. Jones said Infowars has sold about 1,000 of the posters but added that it's hardly one of the site's most popular items.Furie's "chill frog-dude" debuted in a 2006 comic book called "Boy's Club" and became a popular canvas for benevolent internet memes. But the user-generated mutations grew increasingly hateful and ubiquitous more than a year before the 2016 presidential election, when Furie's creation become an online mascot for white nationalists, neo-Nazis and other right-wing extremists. The Anti-Defamation League branded Pepe as a hate symbol in September 2016 and promoted Furie's efforts to reclaim the character.Twitter banned Jones and Infowars from the social media platform earlier this year for abusive behaviour . Jones has been sued by targets of his conspiracy theories, including parents of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012. Jones questioned whether the shooting rampage was a hoax.Michael Kunzelman, The Associated Press.

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Entering a modal-UN chief warns of famine in Yemen, urges halt to violence-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-November 5, 2018

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Friday that Yemen could face "the worst famine we have seen in decades" and urged the country's warring parties to immediately halt the violence. The UN chief told reporters "the urgency of the humanitarian crisis leaves no room for complacency" and the "building wave of momentum" for peace must be seized.UN humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock warned last week that "there is a clear and present danger of an imminent and great big famine engulfing Yemen" that could affect 14 million people — half of the country's population. The conflict began in 2014 when Houthi Shia rebels toppled the internationally recognized government. A Saudi-led coalition allied with the government has been fighting the Houthis since 2015.Guterres said more and more countries are engaged in helping create conditions for the warring parties to understand the need to cease hostilities and engage in serious negotiations. He urged the coalition and the Houthis "to overcome obstacles and resolve differences through dialogue" at UN facilitated talks later this month.Guterres stressed that "violence must stop everywhere — with an immediate halt around critical infrastructure and densely populated areas.""My objective is to appeal to the parties to the conflict to understand that there is an opportunity that must be seized, and to say that the humanitarian situation is so dire that if that doesn't happen" the world will have to deal with a famine in Yemen next year, he said."I must say, I hope the voice of reason will prevail," Guterres said.

Khashoggi crisis may tip Middle East power balance towards Turkey-October 2 killing inside Saudi consulate in Istanbul, by a team sent from Riyadh, has already severely tarnished Arab state’s reputation-By Ezzedine SAID-TOI-NOV 5,18

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AFP) — The murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi could alter the power dynamic in the Middle East by strengthening Turkey’s influence at Saudi Arabia’s expense as they compete for leadership of the Islamic world, analysts say. This certainly appears to be the goal of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the main regional supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, which Saudi Arabia and its allies Egypt and the United Arab Emirates consider a terrorist group. The killing inside the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul by a team sent from Riyadh on October 2 has already severely tarnished Saudi Arabia’s global reputation. But it is the potential involvement of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, the oil-rich Gulf nation’s de facto leader known by his initials MBS, that could permanently damage Riyadh’s influence in the region. After initially insisting Khashoggi left the consulate unharmed, then saying he died in a brawl, the Saudi regime finally stated he was killed by a “rogue operation” and arrested 18 suspects, some with links to the crown prince.Analysts say Erdogan could use the ensuing crisis to weaken the 33-year-old prince, even potentially leading to the royal family removing him from power — though that seems unlikely.“The killing of Khashoggi has proven to be a golden opportunity for President Erdogan to pressure Saudi Arabia and work towards presenting Turkey as the new leader of the Muslim world,” said Lina Khatib, director of Middle East and North Africa Programme at Chatham House.“The Khashoggi crisis is a big geo-political gamble for Turkey and so far it looks like it is playing the game masterfully. But Turkey alone will not be able to push for the removal of MBS. The ball lies in the American court,” she added. For Erdogan, promoting the Muslim Brotherhood — which Saudi Arabia has sought to marginalize in the Arab world and which was ousted from power and brutally repressed in Egypt in 2013 by current President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi — is at the heart of this power struggle. The Turkish leader could also try to extract concessions from Riyadh for its ally Qatar, facing a Saudi blockade backed by the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt since 2017.“I think that Erdogan sees this as an opportunity to push back against a triple entente in the Middle East that opposes his policies. That triple entente is composed of MBS, MBZ’s (Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan) UAE and Sissi’s Egypt,” said Soner Cagaptay, director of the Turkey Research Program at the Washington Institute.“These three countries, all Arabs, oppose Erdogan’s policies of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. Now Erdogan sees a golden opportunity because MBS is vulnerable.”But Sinan Ulgen, president of the Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy, said “it remains to be seen whether Ankara can continue to leverage this conjuncture and turn it into a permanent advantage raising Turkey’s regional influence to the detriment of Saudi Arabia”.Nicholas Heras, an analyst at the Center for a New American Security, said the Khashoggi case was the “latest chapter in Turkey and Saudi Arabia’s ongoing contest over which country is better” to lead the Muslim world.“Erdogan clearly seems to believe that he can use the Khashoggi crisis as a way to cut Prince Mohammad bin Salman, and by extension, Saudi Arabia, down to size,” Heras added.By not directly pointing the blame at the crown prince over Khashoggi, Erdogan is seeking to keep him under pressure, according to Karim Bitar of the Paris-based French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs think-tank.“Erdogan knows that he still has ammunition that could weaken MBS in the international arena so basically he is rolling the dice these days trying to figure out how to maximise his profit after this huge Saudi blunder,” he told AFP.While the Muslim Brotherhood is important to Turkey, the West — especially the United States — is wary of the group and wants to focus any pressure on the crown prince towards ending the Yemen war and lifting the blockade on Qatar, the experts said.“I expect the blockade on Doha will likely come to an end in the near future and the Saudis find a way to support the UN’s efforts in Yemen,” said Steven Cook of the Council on Foreign Relations.Bitar noted that the US administration relies on Prince Mohammed’s support for any possible peace plan for the Israel-Palestinian conflict as well as containing Iran, long a Saudi foe.Washington could also push the crown prince towards “a rapprochement with Israel and to maintain a hawkish line towards Iran”, Bitar added.

Emerging Gaza ceasefire to significantly ease blockade — report-Lebanese daily says Egypt prepared to slash 70% of its own border restrictions under 3-year truce deal; Israel will be required to grant work permits and expand fishing zone-By TOI staff-NOV 5,18

An emerging cease-fire agreement aimed at calming months of violence on the Israel-Gaza border will last for three years and see a significant easing of the blockade on the Hamas-controlled territory, Lebanon’s Al-Akbar newspaper reported Saturday.According to the report, the deal being brokered by Egypt stipulates a gradual stop to the ongoing, Hamas-orchestrated violent border protests and maritime flotillas over the next two months. In addition, Hamas will be obligated to punish Gazans caught engaging in violent demonstrating along the border with Israel. In return, Egypt will permanently open its Rafah border crossing and lift 70 percent of its blockade on the Hamas-controlled territory, the report said, citing officials familiar with the emerging agreement.Al-Akbar said the deal would require Israel to grant 5,000 work permits for Gazans, and expand the Strip’s fishing zone from nine to 14 nautical miles.Israel had no immediate comment on the report. In addition, the paper reported the Palestinian Authority would pay 80% of the salaries of Hamas officials in Gaza, and would not object to Qatar bankrolling those wages for at least six months, like it has in the past.Within the framework of the agreement, the report said various economic projects in Gaza would be advanced to create jobs for some 30,000 jobs and alleviate the humanitarian situation in the Strip. The truce is slated to last three years and will be under the supervision of the United Nations and Russia. At later stage after the deal is implemented, Al-Akbar said Egypt would work to advance a prisoner exchange deal between Israel and Hamas. The report was released after Friday’s weekly protests along the Gaza border saw a significant decrease in violence.According to the Hamas-run health ministry in the strip, 12 Palestinians were injured from live Israeli fire, and dozens injured from tear gas inhalation. The Associated Press said the figures were the lowest reported since the start of the demonstrations seven months ago.Official Fatah account posts a picture of what it says is a member of the Hamas-run security forces forcibly preventing protesters from approaching the border fence between Gaza and Israel https://t.co/XAgD08xXWL— Adam Rasgon (@adamrasgon1) November 2, 2018-A senior Hamas member said the clashes were scaled down to give diplomatic efforts a chance amid talk of a breakthrough in months of Egyptian-led negotiations. The official Twitter account of PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah faction even posted a picture of what it claimed to be a member of the Hamas-run security forces forcibly preventing protesters from approaching the Gaza border fence during Friday’s protests.Khalil al-Hayya said the terror group was “testing” Egyptian-led efforts to broker a ceasefire to ease an 11-year-old blockade on Gaza, but warned the clashes would resume if the blockade was not lifted. The IDF put turnout Friday at some 7,000 demonstrators with about half of those present approached the border fence, while the rest remained at a distance and did not clash with soldiers. The protest ended earlier than usual. For months, Egypt and UN officials have been engaged in indirect talks between Hamas, the Islamist terror group that runs the Gaza Strip, and Israel.Israel has accused Hamas, which is sworn to the destruction of the Jewish state, of leading the protests and using them as cover to carry out attacks against troops stationed the border.Last week, seven Palestinians were reported killed in the weekly border protests. The bloodshed was followed by rockets launched at Israel by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group, which were met with and retaliatory Israeli airstrikes, dashing hopes of what was expected to be a calmer week in Gaza.Since the often violent protests began on March 30, over 150 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire during demonstrations and clashes along the border, including a number of people who broke through the fence into Israel. Dozens of the fatalities were Hamas members. During that time, one Israeli soldier has been killed by a Palestinian sniper.

Palestinian-American woman detained at airport, to be deported-Immigration authorities say decision to deny Susan Abulhawa entry due to past incident at border crossing and not connected to BDS-By AFP-5 November 2018

A Palestinian-American writer has been detained on arrival at Israel’s main airport and will be deported, Palestinian and Israeli officials said Friday.Susan Abulhawa was refused entry at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport on Thursday evening, said a spokesman for the Palestinian Literature Festival, which Abulhawa had been set to attend. She appealed the decision in an Israeli court Friday morning but her appeal was rejected, meaning she was likely to be deported in the coming hours, the spokesman added.Abulhawa, author of the novel “Mornings in Jenin,” had been due to appear at panel events in both Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Ramallah during the festival, which is co-sponsored by the British Council.Immigration authority spokeswoman Sabine Haddad told AFP the writer was refused entry because of an incident in 2015 when she refused to answer questions by security personnel when attempting to enter though a land crossing from neighboring Jordan.“She was refused entry then and told that the next time she arrived she had to coordinate in advance,” Haddad said in Hebrew. This time “she landed without arranging entry in advance.”Haddad added that Abulhawa’s detention was not related to support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. In March 2017, Israel’s parliament passed a law barring entry to supporters of BDS, which seeks to isolate the Jewish state internationally.Last month an American student spent two weeks in Israeli detention appealing an entry ban over her past involvement in a campus group that supports boycotting Israel.Lara Alqasem was eventually allowed to enter Israel after its Supreme Court overturned a lower court ruling upholding the state’s decision to deny her entry.Alqasem’s detention came after a number of other high-profile cases in which travelers to Israel were questioned over their political views and alleged support for BDS, drawing scrutiny to the law barring boycott supporters.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Egyptian delegation tours Gaza clashes as promised calm largely holds-Hamas member says violence reined in to give Egyptian truce efforts a chance, but warns of escalation if blockade not lifted-By TOI staff and Agencies-5 November 2018

An Egyptian security delegation toured the Gaza border protests Friday, and even though thousands of Palestinians turned up, they were the quietest in several months, witnesses said. The visit came amid efforts by Egypt to broker a ceasefire between Israel and the Gaza Strip’s Hamas rulers. The delegation briefly attended the demonstrations in northern Gaza, a statement from the head of the organizing committee said. Eyewitnesses said a car carrying the delegation briefly drove to a protest site a few hundred meters from the border, before departing.A senior Hamas member said the clashes were scaled down to give diplomatic efforts a chance amid talk of a breakthrough in months of Egyptian-led negotiations.Khalil al-Hayya said the terror group is “testing” Egyptian-led efforts to broker a ceasefire to ease an 11-year-old blockade on Gaza.Fiercer clashes will resume if the blockade remains in place, al-Hayya warned.Israel and Egypt largely sealed their borders with Gaza after Hamas seized control in 2007 from the Palestinian Authority, citing a need to prevent weapons smuggling.Thousands again gathered at multiple sites near the frontier Friday but largely stayed away from the border fence, AFP correspondents said.Security forces loyal to Hamas prevented protesters from approaching the border too closely, the correspondents said. The Haaretz daily put turnout at some 7,000 demonstrators and quoted the Israel Defense Forces as saying about half of those present approached the border fence, while the rest remained at a distance and did not clash with soldiers. The protest ended earlier than usual. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said 32 Palestinians were injured during the protests, including seven by Israeli fire, which The Associated Press said was the lowest casualty figures reported since the start of the demonstrations.Armed factions in Gaza on Thursday had agreed to rein in violence along the security fence in light of the latest Egyptian-efforts to reach a ceasefire with Israel.A senior Hamas member told the Ynet news site groups in Gaza agreed to stop protesters from burning tires, throwing firebombs and approaching the border during rallies until Sunday. He said the protesters would also refrain from launching incendiary devices toward Israel over the weekend.Egypt and UN officials have been engaged in indirect talks between Hamas, the Islamist terror group that runs the Gaza Strip, and Israel.Israel has accused Hamas, which is sworn to the destruction of the Jewish state, of leading the protests and using them as cover to carry out attacks against troops stationed the border-Since often violent protests began on March 30, over 150 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire during protests and clashes along the border, including a number of people who broke through the fence into Israel. Dozens of the fatalities were Hamas members. One Israeli soldier has been killed by a Palestinian sniper. In a statement after a meeting of their leaders in Gaza on Thursday, Hamas and Islamic Jihad said the marches would continue, albeit without violence. Both groups praised Egyptian and UN efforts to broker a deal.A separate statement by Islamic Jihad carried by Israeli media threatened that it would use a “new tactic” along the border, without providing details.A leader of the Iran-backed terror group told Haaretz the Egyptians had agreed to work to curb any Israeli response to the protests over the next three weeks. The unnamed official said the protests could be called off after that period if Israel keeps to its commitment to ease a blockade on the Strip. There was no comment from Egyptian officials.Last week’s clashes, in which seven Palestinians were reported killed, was followed by Islamic Jihad rocket launches at Israel and retaliatory Israeli Air Force raids, dashing hopes of what was expected to be a calmer weekend along the border.

This is my Part 2 stories in Bahrain, dated 26 August 08.

(If you enjoy reading these stories then check out my autobiographic book via http://www.lulu.com and type in my pename of Jon Kwame Abbott, or use the book's title (PDAL) but in full kindly.)

In October ’79 I was sent to Bahrain from Dubai to do a fresh sales campaign in there, also under the supposed care of YBA Kanoo, their Gulf HO in fact. There I was unhappily housed in their bloody singles’ Expat’s residence with three other (straight) Brit pricks and situated not far from The British Club.
A. Feeling my way around town on my first free weekend, I picked up a Saudi guy, aged about 22/24 perhaps, and who was close to becoming a fighter pilot, he said. He was dressed in full gulf Arab rig and very statuesque and handsome he looked too. He took me back to his hotel where I met a younger (say aged 17/18) cousin of his sitting in his room. Soon, the first guy had intimated to me that he’d like to fuck me there and then and so I dropped my trousers and bent over for him. He took out his already biggish, almost black member and started his assignment. While bending over I moved to grab the younger guy, sitting opposite and not 3 or 4 feet away, but he didn’t wish to share his already hard cock in his pants with me, unfortunately. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, and in panic stations the pilot and I both quickly adjusted our clothing and he said in Arabic to come in, I guess. A new guy entered and they spoke for a few minutes. After that guy had left the room, the pilot officer guy got up and made for me to lower my pants again so he could finish what he’d started a while back. I obliged and he completed a not unpleasant fuck, with me still in a semi bent-over stance. After we’d dressed he asked me to follow him and we went into a room down the corridor. In that room there were about 4 or 5 other youngish Saudis who, I guess, all got a word-by-word story of our recent sexual endeavours just ended. They spoke excitedly together in Arabic and soon the pilot officer said to me that one of the guys present wanted a fuck me too. Always one for a new adventure I agreed and I was motioned to drop my pants and lean up across the side of the bed, my knees on the floor. The new eager guy dropped himself to a squatting position behind me, having already brought out his hard cock, I guess, and over the next 2 to 3 minutes he had a good fuck. All the other guys in the room became quite giggly and very excited at this bold, middle-aged whiteman (Oyibo in Yorouba and Blofonio in Ga languages) allowing himself to get fucked in semi-public. But outside the Gulf region one would be paying very good money for such services, so after him I had two other guys service me too and all went off very, very well all round, I felt. One of the polite guys came to the front door of the hotel to politely see me off, saying as I left that I should return tomorrow. But the next day was a full working day for me so it never happened, worst luck.
B. One of the very best pick-up joints I discovered in Bahrain was the lower bar in The Hotel Diplomat in Manama township. One needed only to buy oneself a couple of beers (all the locals used to by four each at a time) and sit down somewhere prominent. It would take less than 5 or max 10 minutes before a likely horny Arab would saunter up and ask if he could buy me another couple of beers. If I fancied the guy I’d say OK and that would be that, happily!! One evening I was up by the bar and started talking to a very negroid Arab (see his lovely photo in my Profile, if you like), dressed in European kit. He was called Hassan was to learn and son he said he needed to visit the bathroom. After at least 10 minutes he was still missing and I thought he’d left quietly but no, he reappeared and came back towards me. He suddenly tried to squat down onto his haunches as if exercising, but then I saw that he was trying to hide an enormous cock erection in his trousers. Geez, I said under my breath and we both shot out of the hotel, and at his suggestion, to his car. He drove me out of town towards the Saudi waterway area and soon we stopped and got out. I went round and he brought out his lovely big, black and well-shaped 8inch minimum hard, round cock for me to inspect and then play with, while he kissed me passionately up top. Soon he intimated, without saying a single word, he’d like to fuck me and I turned around with alacrity and very much hope and expectation, and he did not disappoint either. Although only 19 years old he knew how to use his glorious black member very expertly, and then he drove us back to Diplomat Hotel for my car, and all within say 30/40 mins maximum of having left it. I was due to depart for Damman, Saudi, soon afterwards and he even came to the airport to see me off. He came fully dressed in his long white Arabic garb and he looked even more beautiful and sexy than he had two days earlier, and that was where I took his photo I’ve attached in my Profile for all of you guys to drool over and, I hope, enjoy as much as I had all those years previously?? (Plz look out for my PART 3 in Saudi Arabia stories soon.)

'Paradise Discovered, At Last' PART 2 in Bahrain      Cache   Translate Page

Jamal Khashoggi's Murder Finally Brings Media Attention to the Plight of Arab World's Exiled Critics      Cache   Translate Page
Will it embolden or neuter the Arab world's autocratic regimes?

The gruesome and dramatic killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Turkey has captivated media outlets around the world.

A columnist for the Washington Post, Khashoggi had been living in the United States since 2017 as a Saudi exile.

Some have frowned upon this excessive coverage, wondering why one particular instance of Saudi butchery was making headlines, while the Saudi-backed war in Yemen has been going on for years, has claimed the lives of thousands of children and hasn’t received a fraction of the attention.

But I think the coverage of Khashoggi’s murder is important. As an expert in Arab media, I’ve studied the cyberactivists who work to bring about political and social change in the Arab world.

For the first time, the media is bringing widespread attention to the real dangers faced every day by opponents of Arab regimes living abroad.

This was not the first, nor will it be the last, government-orchestrated crime against Arab journalists and activists who are living in exile. However, before Khashoggi’s death, many of these crimes went unnoticed or underreported.

The Arab Spring fizzles – and many flee

Beginning in 2011, waves of opposition to the regimes in power swept through six Arab countries: Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain.

Known as the Arab Spring, many of these protest movements had a similar set of demands: freedom, dignity and democracy.

Some of these countries were long led by dictators, such as Hosni Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for 30 years; Moammar Gadhafi, who ruled Libya for 42 years; and Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who ruled Tunisia for 23 years. It was the first time in decades that these countries witnessed popular uprisings that shook the thrones of political leaders and ousted them from power.

Tunisia was able to chart a relatively smooth, peaceful path toward reform and democratization.

But it ended up being the exception.

The rest of the Arab Spring countries had brief dalliances with democracy, only to revert to a system of political oppression and authoritarianism.

Today, Libya is torn by sectarian strife; Yemen is being bombed day and night; Syria is experiencing the worst civil war in modern history; Egypt returned to a military dictatorship far worse than Mubarak’s; and Bahrain’s uprising was suppressed.

Fearing for their lives and safety – and unable to openly organize and express themselves – many of the leading Arab Spring activists and journalists fled their home countries.

Some, such as Egyptian blogger Wael Abbas, didn’t make it out and remain imprisoned in their home countries. Others, such as Egyptian blogger Maikel Nabil Sanad, are now living in exile.

Although Saudi Arabia wasn’t officially one of the Arab Spring countries, anti-government protests did crop up across the nation in 2011 and 2012. There was enough concern among the ruling class to further crack down and suppress opposing voices.

The heightened repression and stifling of freedom of expression in Saudi Arabia forced many dissidents and opponents to flee the country and, like their Arab Spring peers, exercise their opposition in the diaspora.

For many years, Jamal Khashoggi worked as a journalist in Saudi Arabia, eventually becoming editor-in-chief of the Saudi Arabian daily al-Watan. But in 2003, authorities removed him from his position after one of his columnists wrote a piece critical of an Islamic scholar. Khashoggi moved to London, bounced around the Middle East, and regularly wrote for the Dubai-based periodical al-Arabiya.

An attack on one, an attack on all

While Khashoggi eventually relocated to the U.S. in 2017, many political bloggers and activists who oppose Arab ruling regimes have moved to Turkey.

Dr. Ayman Nour, for example, was arrested in Egypt in 2005 for daring to run as a presidential candidate against former President Hosni Mubarak. After the military coup in Egypt in 2013, Nour founded al-Sharq, a Turkey-based opposition TV channel, which aims to expose the repression and authoritarianism of the current Egyptian regime.

Shaken by Khashoggi’s murder, he and a number of prominent Arab and Turkish figures created the group “Jamal Khashoggi Friends Association” to raise international awareness about this hideous crime and the alarming message it sends to other opponents of autocratic regimes.

To activists like Nour, the attack on Khashoggi is an attack on everyone in the Arab opposition movement in the diaspora.

Unfortunately, their safety in their host countries has been far from guaranteed. In recent years, there have been a number of tragic incidents of violence and aggression directed at some of these activists.

Last year, Ahmed Barakat broke into the Istanbul apartment of his cousin, Syrian opposition activist Orouba Barakat, and her daughter, Halla Barakat, a journalist who worked for the Syrian opposition channel Orient News TV, and gruesomely slaughtered both of them. Many suspect that Ahmed Barakat, a former Free Syrian Army fighter, had been directed by the Assad regime to carry out the murders.

In March of this year, Saudi women’s rights activist Loujain al-Hathloul was plucked from the streets of Abu Dhabi by security forces who returned her to Saudi Arabia, where she remains imprisoned.

After Khashoggi’s murder, I reached out to a Syrian-American journalist living in exile in the United States, but who has contact with people in Turkey. Due to safety concerns, she spoke with me under condition of anonymity.

She noted that “especially after Khashoggi’s murder…the Turkish government [has] adopted tougher security measures.” But his death was only the latest. “Several Syrian opposition figures have been previously targeted and killed in Turkey,” she added.

Saudi opposition weak at home and abroad

Why aren’t the loudest voices opposing Khashoggi’s murder Saudi ones?

The country is, in many ways, a paradox.

On one hand, it has a very large, young, tech-savvy population and is the country with the fourth-largest number of Twitter users in the world.

On the other hand, however, there’s no freedom of the press, and public debate is pretty much nonexistent.

This explains why there has been complete silence inside Saudi Arabia around Khashoggi’s death aside from the ruling regime’s narrative, which has evolved from denial, to evasion, to partial confession.

While there has been a growing movement of Saudi opposition in the diaspora, unlike the Egyptian and Syrian opposition movements, which have been more organized and capable of creating their own associations, Saudi opponents remain few and far between. They are mostly young activists using their social media platforms to voice individual criticisms.

One such activist is Omar Abdulaziz. A friend of Khashoggi’s, the young Saudi dissident lives in Montreal, Canada.

Using his YouTube, Twitter and Instagram accounts, Omar is openly critical of the Saudi regime for its repression, corruption and human rights violations.

His vocal opposition hasn’t gone unpunished. In August 2018, the Saudi regime arrested two of his brothers and some of his friends in an act of retaliation. Yet, Omar has insisted that he won’t be silenced, intimidated or blackmailed.

Following Khashoggi’s murder, Omar described the Saudi crown prince as an “illegitimate leader” and a “killer” on Twitter and YouTube.

Because the price of activism – even abroad – can be so high, the public-facing Abdulaziz is an exception. Most Saudi opponents will keep a much lower profile, using pseudonyms or posting anonymously.

What happens next?

Authoritarian Arab regimes have tightened their grip on power and escalated their mechanisms of repression in the years since the Arab Spring uprisings.

Many of these regimes have been enabled by their own people, many of whom are either apathetic or supportive of their repressive policies: They prioritize the promise of stability over the dream of freedom.

They’ve also been emboldened by the current American administration, which practices a brand of realpolitik that prioritizes its economic interests over its values when dealing with autocrats and dictators.

But the death of Arab opponents such as Jamal Khashoggi doesn’t signal the death of Arab opposition.

With the whole world watching, texting, tweeting and chatting, I believe that many of these governments will eventually be condemned in the court of public opinion, both at home and abroad.

If anything positive came out of the tragic murder of Khashoggi, it is that there has finally been extensive global media attention given to an extrajudicial killing in the diaspora.

The Saudi regime might think twice about trying to pull off something similar.

Art Review: 'I AM: Contemporary Middle Eastern Women Artists and the Quest to Build Peace,' Cathedral of St. Paul      Cache   Translate Page
It's not often Vermonters get to view artwork by major contemporary women artists of the Middle East. A traveling exhibition of single works by 31 such artists, now on view at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Burlington, is an extraordinary opportunity to do just that. "I AM: Contemporary Middle Eastern Women Artists and the Quest to Build Peace" includes works by Arab and Persian artists who are Muslim or Christian. Seven are from Bahrain; the rest are from Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Iran, Palestine, Yemen, Morocco, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Iraq or Saudi Arabia. The range of mediums represented is gratifyingly diverse, from oil and acrylic paintings to photography, collage, ink on paper, digital prints, scanography, mixed media, sculpture and, in one case, human hair affixed to calf vellum. Some of the artists are based or were trained in the UK, the U.S. or Europe. High-end auction companies Christie's and Sotheby's represent a few of them, and nearly all have been exhibited and collected internationally. All the works are for sale, and these artists' integration in the global art market accounts for why the show would seem at home in any contemporary gallery in any major U.S. city. So, how did it end up on the concrete walls of St. Paul's, an Episcopal church? "I AM" is a peace-building project of Caravan, a nonprofit founded in Egypt in 2009 by Paul-Gordon Chandler, an American Episcopal priest. The son of a minister, he grew up in Senegal "surrounded by other faiths and art," Chandler said during a phone call, and was educated in Côte d'Ivoire and England. He launched Caravan during a 10-year posting in Cairo; its mission is to use the arts to unite people of different backgrounds and faiths in an effort to build sustainable peace. Caravan's art exhibition began as a citywide East-West arts festival in Cairo that continued annually until 2013, when president Mohamed Morsi was overthrown. That year's exhibition traveled to London while Caravan itself moved, with Chandler, to Chicago. Every Caravan exhibition since has also toured the U.S. St. Paul's former dean and rector, the Very Reverend Jeanne Finan, who retired in October, had been following Chandler's work. She emailed him when she spotted an online call for venues for "I AM." Thus Burlington became the last — and smallest — stop on the tour of an exhibition that opened at the Jordan…

Uber's board reportedly held a 'marathon meeting' as it grapples with its ties to Saudi Arabia      Cache   Translate Page

uber ceo dara khosrowshahi

  • Uber's board held a "marathon meeting" last week, Bloomberg reported, as the company grapples with its ties to Saudi Arabia in the wake of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi's murder.
  • The Kingdom now reportedly owns more than 10% of the ride-hailing firm, which is eyeing an IPO as valuable as $120 billion next year.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi was one of the first to pull out of Saudi Arabia’s Future Investment conference in October after the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, but behind the scenes, his board has been working in overdrive to ensure the international debacle doesn't once again embroil the company in a wave of bad press.

The company’s board held a "marathon meeting" last week, Bloomberg News reported, with all directors in attendance, including former CEO Travis Kalanick and Saudi official Othman Al-Rumayyan, who manages the Kingdom's Public Investment Fund.

Saudi Arabia, through "direct and indirect holdings" now owns more than 10% of Uber, Bloomberg also reported. That's double the 5% stake Uber said the Kingdom had purchased in 2016 for $3.5 billion, and could cause a headache for Uber as it races towards an IPO as soon as next year.

An Uber spokesperson declined to comment, but confirmed the board did hold its regularly scheduled board meeting last week, as it does every quarter.

Like Khosrowshahi and fellow Uber board member Ariana Huffington, most of Wall Street was quick to shun the Saudi Arabian conference, colloquially known as "Davos in the desert." BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon and US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin all opted to skip the event, yet Kalanick was seen in Riyadh that week, according to Bloomberg.

SoftBank, another Uber investor, has also accepted $45 billion worth of funding for its investments, according to Bloomberg. The Japanese company's Vision Fund is heavily invested in transportation initiatives including GrabTaxi, GM Cruise, and Nvidia.

Lyft, Uber's closest competitor that's also racing towards an IPO, isn't immune to the Saudi shadow. Saudi prince  Prince Alwaleed bin Talal led a $247.7 million investment in the company, which now has a roughly 35% market share in the US, that translates to a 5.3% stake, Reuters reported.

"Uber is creating lots of jobs in Saudi Arabia and making life easier for drivers, customers and shareholders," Saudi's Al-Rumayyan said at the conference last month. "We did not have these interests before and we want to enhance these sectors."

This Manama Dialogue was attended by key defense and foreign policy decision makers including General James Mattis; US Secretary of Defense, Brett McGurk; Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmad Al Khlifa; Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adel Al Jubeir; Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi; Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yousef bin Alawi; Oman’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Taro Kono; Japan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ursula von der Leyen; German’s Minister of Defense, Elisabetta Trenta; Italy’s Minister of Defense, Raychelle Omamo; Kenya’s Secretary of Defense, Abdisaid Ali; Somalia’s National Security Adviser, Jean-Christophe Belliard; Deputy Secretary General, Political Affairs, Political Director, European External Action service. Yet, surprisingly, the media had ignored the gathering of these important persons?

The speeches of these representatives were characterized mainly as Iran bashing and condemnations, particularly the speeches of the American representatives; Mattis and McGurk, and the Bahraini and Saudi ministers. While their governments are pursuing hegemonic policies within the region, they accuse Iran of pursuing a hegemonic Iranian Crescent, previously called Shi’ite Crescent, covering Lebanon, Syria and Yemen. Iran did not impose itself on these countries. Lebanese Hezbollah requested Iranian help to free Lebanon from the 1982 Israeli occupation. Syria requested Iranian help to defeat American/Israeli/Gulf States supported terrorist groups. Yemen cannot get any outside help due to the air and sea siege imposed by American/Saudi/UAE’s forces.

'Paradise Discovered, At Last' PART 2 in Bahrain      Cache   Translate Page
