Additive manufacturing, the so-called three-dimensional (3D) printing, is a revolutionary emerging technology. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is the most used 3D printing technology in which the melted filament is extruded through the nozzle and builds up layer by layer onto the build platform. The layers are then fused together and solidified into final parts. Graphene-based materials have been positively incorporated into polymers for innovative applications, such as for the mechanical, thermal, and electrical enhancement. However, to reach optimum properties, the graphene fillers are necessary to be well dispersed in polymers matrix. This study aims to emphasise the interest of producing ABS/graphene oxide (GO) composites for 3D printing application. The ABS/GO composite filaments were produced using dry mixing and solvent mixing methods before further melt extruded to investigate the proper way to disperse GO into ABS matrix. The ABS/GO composite filament with 2 wt.% of GO, prepared from the solvent mixing method, was successfully printed into a 3D model. By adding GO, the tensile strength and Young’s modulus of ABS can be enhanced. However, the ABS/GO composite filament that was prepared via the dry mixing method failed to print. This could be attributed to the aggregation of GO, leading to the die clogging and failure of the printing process.

Plant-based meats are finally taking off: animal-free beef is popping up everywhere from high-end burger joints to, uh, biochemical research facilities.

Fine, plant-based and 3D-printed burgers, steaks, and chicken cutlets haven’t quite yet liberated the world’s livestock. But the technology behind these scientific snacks is progressing — with enough support, food researcher Jacy Reese predicts in a new book that we could replace a good chunk of traditional meats in a matter of decades.

Let Them Eat Steak

If we want to prevent catastrophic levels of global climate change, we need to farm and eat less meat. The various startups working on fake meat, perhaps the most famous of which is Impossible Foods, are pursuing an ambitious workaround: bringing cheap, sustainable food to the world without completely making people give up meat.

“In addition to contributing towards decreasing the effect of livestock on climate change, desertification and avoid animals slaughter, the development of these kinds of technological advances should help the populations living in the rural areas of our planet to have better access to healthy food and a varied diet,” Giuseppe Scionti, a biomedical researcher who found a way to 3D print realistic chicken cutlets and steaks, told Futurism.

But major governments need to step in if these plant-based meats are ever going to get out of bougie restaurants and into the hungry mouths of the world.

Without massive structural investments, Fast Company’s reporting corroborated, plant-based meats will be stuck as a fad diet and may never become widespread and inexpensive enough to help the world.

Inspired by the shells of arthropods, such as lobsters and beetles, a team at Purdue University developed the paste with similar toughening mechanisms in the material, which uses its “built-in” weakness to actually make it stronger, said Jan Olek, a professor in Purdue’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering, in a Purdue news release.

Cement paste is a key ingredient of concrete and mortar—materials that are widely used in construction. Currently, cracks in these types of materials weaken them, which makes buildings or other structures built with them more prone to damage or collapse under mechanical stress.

However, by mimicking the exoskeletons of arthropods (which have ways inherent in the material to control how damage spreads) in printed layers of the material, researchers have managed to develop a base cement material that is more resilient than what is currently used, they said.

Researchers compared their novel design to the strength it requires to break a bunch of uncooked spaghetti noodles rather than a single one. The 3D-printing process itself actually is integral to developing these stronger, cement-based materials that mimic this dynamic because it allows for custom control of material fabrication, said Mohamadreza "Reza" Moini, a Purdue Ph.D. candidate of civil engineering, who worked on the research.

"3D printing cement-based materials provides control over their structure, which can lead to the creation of more damage and flaw-tolerant structural elements like beams or columns," he said in the news release.

Adding Layers

Researchers used a number of layering architectures to create inherently resilient cement structures, including ones called "honeycomb," "compliant," and "Bouligand" designs, they said.

By experimenting with each, they could observe new behaviors in a 3D-printed cement structure once it hardened. In the Bouligand architecture, for example, researchers found they could take advantage of weak interfaces to make a material more crack-resistant, Moini said. A compliant architecture showed the material acting differently, with cement-based elements behaving like a spring despite being comprised of brittle material.

The Purdue team also used micro-CT scans to gain a better understanding of how hardened 3D-printed, cement-based materials behave to take better advantage of their weak characteristics—such as pores found between the printed layers—to create strength, they said. A paper published in the journal Advanced Materials and a video on YouTube describe the scientists’ methods in more depth.

Researchers plan to continue their work to explore other ways that structures made from 3D-printed cement paste can behave more resiliently under mechanical stress or other damage, they said.

In 2010 ben ik in het kader van een profielwerkstuk over 3D printen begonnen aan de bouw van de Mendel. Helaas hebben we die nooit helemaal werkend gekregen: simpele prints kwamen er eigenlijk nooit goed uit. Vanwege tijdsgebrek en andere prioriteiten heeft hij jarenlang ongebruikt in de kast gestaan maar inmiddels begint het steeds meer te kriebelen om hem nog eens goed onder handen te nemen. De electronica die we toen gebruikte was gebaseerd op een vroeg prototype voor het RAMPS 1.X? bordje en ik vermoed dat die nooit helemaal lekker gewerkt heeft. Ook de extruder hebben we nooit goed afgesteld gekregen. Ik zou beide dan ook graag vervangen voor iets nieuws. In 8 jaar is er veel veranderd en ik ben dan ook benieuwd wat jullie op dit moment zouden aanraden. Qua stepper motors en mechanica zit ‘ie naar mijn idee best goed in elkaar, ik denk dat met het vervangen van de electronica en extruder er best nog acceptable prints uit kunnen komen. Of denken jullie dat dit verspilde moeite is en zou het beter zijn om helemaal aan iets nieuws te gaan bouwen?

Bit of an update and expansion on this, I checked more with some local folks on the Pronsole input handling, and it does work fairly reliably on linux at least, albet a bit rough in some parts. When connecting to a printer you would use the "connect" command, which will attempt to connect to an available plugged in printer in its default config. If you type "help command" it will list the number of available comm ports to connect to, so you can type "connect COM5" and it will attempt to reach a printer connected to that port, if any if the default does not connect properly.

After that, the command prompt should feature a temperature gauge and progress percentage, such as 0/215, 0%>, which is the current temperature, set temperature, and percentage complete on print, this doesn't include the bed temperature however, which you'll need to use the "gettemp" command for. From there you would need to use the load command to initialize a G-Code file for printing by typing "load C:/myfolder/my_model.gcode", then use the print command and it should automatically begin heating and printing, if you type "help print" it will tell you what gcode file you have currently loaded, in case you don't want to print the wrong file by mistake, or change it by loading a different file. The Monitor command can also give regular feedback on the prints progress every 5 seconds, but no temperature feedback. You can also adjust the temperate on the fly by using the "settemp" and "bedtemp" commands, and the "eta" command can give you a rough estimate on how long the print will take, note that the estimate can fluctuate as its going. For regular updates on temperature and progress, all you'll need to do is hit enter to refresh the command prompt.

Typically when a print is finished the print head will automatically home to its starting position and set the temperatures back to a cool off mode, which is where things might get a bit tricky if you want to abort a print in progress. What you want to do is type the "pause" command which will stop the print but not reset the nozzle or bed temps, use the "home" command to return it to its starting position, and then the "off" command, which will shut everything off, even the cooling fans. You can reconnect to the printer and use the "reset" command to reinitialize the fans and system, but this isn't exactly a very graceful way of doing it, although it should be mostly okay as the nozzle and bed will start cooling when the heaters cut. Another would be to pause, home, and manually set the bed and nozzle temps to zero to cool off with the fans active, or just cut the power altogether.

If anybody plans on playing around with 3D printers, I would encourage you to try seeking out a local hacker or maker space, if one is available. They'll likely have a 3D printer on hand that you can experiment with using the Pronsole to get a feel for it, as opposed to dropping 200$ to 300$ on one with gnarly assembly that you may or may not use, heh.

CAD and simulation company, Autodesk, has taken a role in the series by offering examples of current engineering projects and by providing software for the program’s visuals. “Autodesk’s support of Project Impossible began early in the series development. We recommended and introduced our customers doing groundbreaking engineering projects and provided Autodesk employees as subject matter experts throughout the series,” Liz Nugent, manager of Autodesk Brand Partnerships, told Design News. “We also provided financial and technical support as well as software for the show. The post-production for the series is done with Autodesk Flame, Autodesk 3ds Max, and Autodesk Maya.”

Autodesk’s involvement in Project Impossible came after Autodesk worked with the History Channel on a Modern Marvels episode. “The ‘Panama Canal episode of Modern Marvels was extremely successful for the History Channel. Through the production process and historical discovery of that episode, the team at Radiant Features became familiar with Autodesk, our software, and the projects that have been created using our 3D design tools,” said Nugent. “Once Radiant Features had the idea for Project Impossible, they asked us to collaborate.”

Looking at the Engineering of Major Projects

The show focuses on extraordinary engineer challenges and on projects that solve human problems. “The program highlights innovative solutions to human and environmental challenges,” said Nugent. “Viewers will be amazed by the technology, the human ingenuity, the massive projects and machines, as well as the stories of the individuals who are making it all happen.”

Autodesk has been involved in the programs covering Iqaluit Airport, Lightning Motorcycles, CyArk (the company that completed a scan of Mt. Electric motorcycles are gathering momentum, whether we like it or not. And customizers are slowly starting to discover the potential of e-bikes—which makes our job here way more interesting.

But there’s one shop we’d never have pegged as early adopters: Urban Motor of Berlin. Peter Dannenberg and his crew have made a name for themselves building classy petrol-driven machines, using old school techniques. So this battery-operated whippet based on the KTM Freeride E is a literal volte-face.

Peter refers to this project as a 180 degree turn for the shop. “As you know, we usually build ‘mechanical’ bikes,” he says, “and use ‘real’ materials, like metal and leather.”

“Our designs are made by hand, with a pen. 3D scanning, 3D design, 3D printing and synthetic materials…that’s almost revolutionary.”

Observation of this new material - 3d printing with filaments - for a permanent outdoor display 

As we know PLA could stay outdoor for 2 years or more (no other published data from users) in Europe.  There has been a 4 meter high sculpture printed with normal infill printed as an outdoor sculpture.   And one in Amsterdam as a statue.  (more research to be done)

To know the exact temperature/conditions inside the glass volume we need to use a thermometer.

The upper part is in PET. White lace plate is in PLA. 
As it is an outdoor installation, with a glass enclosure and bottom lighting, it gets very hot inside. 

We could see after one day in the sunlight, the PLA started to warp a little, it demonstrates buckling and gives a flying aspect to the disk. 

The glass covered volume turns into a "solar slow cooking device".
It is very interesting and we will observe how much warping will continue, and would be very good to have results over one years time. 
 How will the "Human Heart is made of Flesh" survive 4 seasons ?  What behaviors will we see?

We already know the traditional materials, metal and stone; glass has been historically tested to with stand sun rays.  However with wood, it is much more delicate.  And with stone, over time, there will be wind etching too.  Soft wood will not last.  Soft stone will be etched by the wind if left outside unprotected.  What kind of new materials we could use to last longer than the traditional ones?  Carbon fiber?  maybe.  :)

Here, I am looking at my first 3d sculpture living in the desert.

I am looking forwards to seeing photos of this Heart over a years time.

We held a discussion on the 3D printing technology. Although the new printing technology has come into existence for quite some time, it has only been about 5 years since the technique becomes known to the public. Of je moet kijken of je ergens een los frame kan bestellen en daar al je onderdelen op zetten. Maar zou inderdaad de elektronica (mainboard) nieuw kopen en de nozzle, daar heeft men behoorlijk wat stappen gemaakt, en het frame van de mendel was lang niet zo stug als menig ander frames nu.Is de draadeind / driehoek constructie van de Mendel dan zo inferieur aan de nieuwe (aluminium hoek/H-profielen) dan? Moet zeggen dat ik de driehoek constructie inderdaad alleen maar bij de Mendel toegepast heb gezien maar had nooit het idee dat de constructie zo slecht was dat het invloed op de print zou hebben. Ender 3 ziet er verder interessant uit maar zo te zien alleen als compleet pakket te krijgen? Dan valt er weinig van de Mendel te herbruiken...
