Japanese tycoon going on SpaceX rocket says he trusts Musk      Cache   Translate Page

TOKYO — The Japanese online retail tycoon who plans to travel to the moon on the SpaceX rocket says he respects and trusts Elon Musk as a fellow entrepreneur, despite his recent troubles.

"Twitter can get you into trouble," Yusaku Maezawa, chief executive of Zozo Inc., said Tuesday at the Foreign Correspondents' Club in Tokyo. "And that can be said of Elon Musk, too."

Musk's tweet in August that declared he had secured financing for a Tesla buyout got him in trouble with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Under a settlement, Tesla and Musk each must pay a $20 million penalty. Musk also stepped down as Tesla's chairman.

Maezawa, 42, who is also quite active on social media, intends to be a passenger on Musk's Space X, the first-ever private commercial space trip, scheduled for blastoff in 2023, to orbit the moon, in what Maezawa has dubbed his "#dearMoon Project."

Maezawa said he got a good feel for Musk's character by visiting Tesla, and seeing the relationship Musk had developed with his employees.

"They believe in Elon Musk," he said. "That kind of company is marvelous. I felt that as another entrepreneur."

Although Maezawa said nothing was decided yet on who was going with him on the space travel, he said he wanted to take visual artists, fashion designers and musicians from a variety of backgrounds, including the actress he was dating, Ayame Goriki, "if she proves to be a good match for the mission."

Maezawa said his company has a twitter policy, and experts go over his tweets in advance. Sometimes he gets emotional on social media, but he is careful not to say anything that might hurt his company, he said.

Recently, he took to his twitter and Instagram accounts to lash out at online hecklers, who had ridiculed his halting rendition of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" on an expensive Stradivarius violin he had just purchased.

Maezawa is known for lavish purchases, including artworks by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. But he is equally known for sharing them with the public.

He shrugged off the possible dangers of space, just as he brushed off the risks of tweets and associations with Musk.

"There is no end if you start thinking about that," he said of the risks.

Maezawa said he has not yet started training for the mission, but he has been getting regular medical checkups and is brushing up on his English.

In a nation where people tend to be focused on blending in and getting along, Maezawa has stood out. Forbes magazine estimates his wealth at $2.9 billion.

Maezawa ran an import CD business and played in a rock band before he embarked on his online fashion business with his shopping site Zozotown.

Recently, he has begun making clothes, such as a wearable technology called Zozosuit. The suit, splattered with hundreds of dots, takes body measurements with a software application, ensuring a good fit.

Maezawa said nicely fitting clothes bring smiles and the moon trip's purpose also is to add to happiness.

The world remembers the first words of the 1969 Apollo astronaut Neil Armstrong, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," he said.

Maezawa has a message of his own that he says will be more casual, akin to the lyrics he loved playing in rock bands growing up.

All I want to say is this: Wouldn't the world be a better place if there is peace?" said Maezawa.

Október 8-án a SAOCOM 1A-s argentin műholdat segített pályára állítani, melyet SpaceX Falcon 9-es hordozórakétái repítettek a magasba Kaliforniából, helyi idő szerint 19:21-kor. A küldetés igen látványosra sikerült, különösen a kilövés első fázisa, amikor leválik a hajtórakéta a műholdról.

m d mill, You wrote: "<i>No, I just think that this is even less likely. Your logic is faulty. Shipping raw Titanium to earth from the moon or elsewhere, once it is mined and purified is the relatively easy part, and makes the most economic sense.</i>" First you tell me that you are not thinking that raw material will be brought back to Earth, then you suggest that is your expectation. Something is faulty, but it is not the logic. A company called Made In Space is demonstrating that manufacturing in space may not be as difficult as many people assume. "<i>just show me.</i>" Was I unclear in my answer to your original request? Later you deviated from this request, so I replied to those deviations (as I am about to do in the next paragraph). NASA itself is not the joke. It has talented, knowledgeable, and skilled workers. Its management may be motivated more by politics than science or exploration, and it is <i>most definitely </i>not well used by Congress. It was Congress that directed NASA to make SLS without giving a mission for it to accomplish, and Congress even directed some of SLS's design to NASA, as though Congress is the rocket scientist rather than NASA's workers, resulting in an expensive rocket in search of a purpose (hence the proposed (F)LOP-Gateway). These problems do not make NASA a joke, they make some of NASA's most publicized projects jokes. JPL is fantastic, and -- although I did not like working with its personnel -- Goddard produces excellent science at a fairly reasonable cost. "<i>On reflection my, original post was reasonable and correct.</i>" Apparently, in your mind, if you can't "<i>see how extra earth missions are going to see a profit</i>" then you project your lack of imagination onto everyone else, too, and there is no convincing you otherwise. Meanwhile, I am going to continue celebrating the other seven billion people, their imaginations, and their ability to make their own dreams come true, even when -- like SpaceX's reusable first stage -- they <i>do </i>have to accomplish the "impossible" in an economical manner.

Cache   Translate Page

Cache   Translate Page

NASA's Hubble space telescope just lost a vital part, and one of its backups is 'acting drunk.' Here's why astronomers haven't lost hope.      Cache   Translate Page

hubble space telescope orbiting earth satellite hst nasa heic0908c

  • A vital part inside the Hubble Space Telescope, which records stunning images of the universe, failed on Friday.
  • The part is called a gyroscope and helps Hubble point at celestial objects.
  • It's the third of six total gyros to fail since 2009, when astronauts last serviced Hubble. Another gyro is acting "drunk," one official said.
  • NASA may start using a single gyro to extend the telescope's lifespan, but this would limit the observations Hubble can make.
  • When Hubble dies, NASA will have a few ways to get rid of — or rescue — the bus-sized cylinder.

The Hubble Space Telescope is famous for the stunning images it records of the universe, from distant galaxies to dark storms on Neptune and even plumes of water shooting from alien moons.

But the Earth-orbiting spacecraft won't last forever. NASA, the European Space Agency, and other Hubble partners got a sobering reminder of this fact last week, when a vital part called a gyroscope failed.

Hubble's gyros help tell the telescope that it's aimed at the right spot in space. Friday's event marked the third failure of six total gyros that astronauts installed in 2009. So Hubble is left with three such devices — the exact number NASA needs to keep the telescope operating normally.

Following the failure, the 12-ton, school-bus-size observatory went into safe mode, NASA said on Monday. But it's not the end.

"Hubble's instruments still are fully operational and are expected to produce excellent science for years to come," NASA said.

However, the space agency is not yet out of the woods: One of Hubble's three remaining gyros is on the fritz and not functioning reliably.

"We've had some issues with this gyro in the past, and we've got some possible leads on the current problem," Ken Sembach, director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, which operates Hubble, told Business Insider. "But the thing that's been clear on Hubble is that these gyros all have a mind of their own. I don't think anybody really knows what's going on with it right now."

NASA plans to continue investigating the issue while the telescope is in safe mode, ideally until a fix is found. But it has a pre-planned option if Hubble is limited to two working gyros.

How Hubble's gyroscopes work and why they're so important

hubble space telescope hst cutaway diagram pointing gyros gyroscopes reactions wheels guidance sensors nasa

Hubble orbits Earth at 17,000 mph and rotates constantly to fixate on a particular object or new region of space.

The spacecraft has no rocket thrusters to orient itself. Instead, internal motors called reaction wheels spin up to provide momentum. The rest of Hubble responds by "pushing" in the opposite direction, causing it to rotate.

If Hubble doesn't know exactly where it's pointing, it'd miss targets and send back blurry pictures.

That's where the gyros come in. Hubble's gyros — ideally, three working at a time — act as an ultra-accurate balancing system that helps the telescope move in the most precise way possible.

hubble space telescope gyroscope gyro part nasaEach Hubble gyro is a small cylinder with an internal "float" that spins thousands of times per minute. A special fluid helps the float spin effortlessly for more than five years without fail. Two small wires — each finer than a human hair — measure any change in the spin and turn that into an electrical signal.

The signal feeds into computers, which tell the telescope's reaction wheels how and when to move.

"You need the gyros to know where you are in space. Once you know where you are, you can tell the spacecraft to turn this way or that way," a Hubble telescope team member told Business Insider. (He asked to remain anonymous because he wasn't yet permitted by NASA to speak to press about the issue.)

Instruments called fine guidance sensors, which look for fixed patterns of stars in the sky, also help keep Hubble aware of its position. And the telescope has magnetic sensors that provide some orientation data as well. But none of these devices are as great as the gyros, which are among the most accurate and stable ever made, according to NASA.

Hubble's first set of six gyros failed somewhat rapidly — bromine in the liquid ate away at the sensing wires — so NASA astronauts installed six new-and-improved gyros in 2009, dramatically extending Hubble's life.

Still, Sembach said even these newer devices are finicky, fragile, and will eventually fail.

"Everything inside has to be working just right in order for these things to work," he said.

How a 'drunk' gyro might cut into Hubble's future observations

hubble extreme ultra deep field infrared uv deepest patch night sky nasa stsci

Since NASA retired its space shuttles in 2011, it has not had a spacecraft able to service Hubble and replace the gyros.

So Hubble's three gyros are what's left to work with for the foreseeable future.

"So far, they seem to be doing well, minus this one that's acting drunk," Sembach said, referring to the third and oddly behaving gyro.

If Hubble's engineers can't figure out what's wrong with the "drunk" gyro and fix it with new software, they'll shut it down.

"If the outcome indicates that the gyro is not usable, Hubble will resume science operations in an already defined 'reduced-gyro' mode that uses only one gyro," NASA said. In that case, the agency would also turn off one of the remaining two "good" gyros to prevent wear-and-tear and extend the telescope's lifespan.

V838 Monocerotis red nova candidate supergiant star nasa hubble esa

That change would amount to a roughly 50% cut in the area of sky Hubble could observe at a given moment. So the telescope would have to wait longer to study certain objects. It'd also be unable to move quickly enough to target surprise objects, such as exploding stars.

"Another potential downside is that observations that require tracking of moving targets (think objects closer than Jupiter) may be difficult to observe since these are normally done under gyro-only control," Sembach said in an email to Business Insider. (A newly discovered comet or a rogue interstellar asteroid might be two examples.)

Running on one gyro instead of three could add up to a 10% hit to the observatory's efficiency, Sembach said, but he added: "overall the science will be very similar (i.e., great!)."

"While reduced-gyro mode offers less sky coverage at any particular time, there is relatively limited impact on the overall scientific capabilities," NASA said.

On the plus side, saving one gyro for later might help Hubble operate well into the era of the James Webb Space Telescope, or JWST, which is NASA's next-generation, infrared-light-sensing observatory. It's scheduled for launch in 2021.

"Hubble is the world's premier astronomical facility, and it will be until JWST is launched," Sembach said. "Even then, it will have capabilities that'd complement JWST."

What will happen to Hubble after it stops working?

point nemo oceanic pole of inaccessibility google maps usgs nasa noaa labeled thumb

Eventually, the telescope will stop working altogether.

"This weekend's events remind us the spacecraft is aging, and that it will eventually have an end-state," Sembach said. "NASA and the scientific community will have to address this at some point."

Without some kind of intervention, Hubble is expected to crash to Earth in the mid-2030s. Although it's unlikely Hubble would hit anything after falling from space, NASA and its partners have committed to make sure Hubble doesn't pose any threat.

To that end, astronauts who serviced the telescope in 2009 screwed on a grappling fixture. This allows for a spacecraft to dock with Hubble, giving NASA a variety of options to deal with its observatory.

"You could grab it and de-orbit in the Pacific Ocean, because you don't want it hitting an inhabited area," Sembach said.

If that's the case, NASA would likely target the most remote region of the Pacific, a zone sometimes called "Point Nemo" or the "spacecraft cemetery."

Another option is for an uncrewed spacecraft to boost Hubble to a very high and stable orbit above Earth, where it would likely remain for thousands of years.

"Or you could potentially go back and service the thing," Sembach said. "Right now that's not possible, but maybe in 10 years. Who knows?"

There is a fourth (more radical) option: A large, next-generation commercial vehicle, such as a modified spaceship of SpaceX's upcoming Big Falcon Rocket system, could capture Hubble and bring it back to Earth for display in a museum.

"I would not be opposed to that," Sembach said.

Você viu as imagens do último lançamento da SpaceX? Elas são espetaculares!      Cache   Translate Page

Cache   Translate Page

#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

Seja bem-vindo ao Sistema Solar, "The Goblin"!

"Cirurgia cerebral" no rover Curiosity

Voyager 2 saindo do Sistema Solar

Elon Musk’s ‘Favorite’ Brain Teaser That He Asks Candidates At SpaceX Interviews      Cache   Translate Page

SpaceX founder Elon Musk might have been immortalized for smoking some things up, but he takes his hiring processes seriously, as detailed in his autobiography, Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, that was written by American business columnist Ashlee Vance.

According to Vance, Musk spent the early years of SpaceX interviewing almost every one of his 1,000-odd employees, including janitors and technicians, and continued to personally communicate with budding engineers as the company expanded.

These workers would likely be familiar with Musk’s “favorite” riddle that he’s known to ask at interviews:

“You’re standing on the surface of the Earth. You walk one mile south, one mile west and one mile north. You end up exactly where you started. Where are you?”

In the video below, CNBC’s career advice segment Make It takes to the streets to ask people of various backgrounds if they can answer the question.

Evidently, the riddle ends up confusing most.

One man jokingly throws a guess, saying, “I’m up there. Up there is where Elon Musk lives. I am a Tesla owner… so I’m there with him.”

If you’re equally stumped, here’s one of the answers: it’s the North Pole. If you start from there and walk one mile south, one mile west, and then one mile north, your path will create a triangle that leads you back to the North Pole.

Musk would also follow up with the question, “Where else could it be?” The answer is the South Pole, which many engineers are less likely to answer.

Regardless, Vance pointed out that Musk isn’t so concerned about whether applicants can present the actual solutions. Rather, he’s keen on assessing how they process information, as well as their problem-solving skills.

Posing the brain teaser allows Musk to observe if an interviewee can take ownership of a project’s issues or merely work in a team.

“People [who] really solved the problem, they know exactly how they solved it,” Musk once said. “They know the little details."

Is there an updated timeline on unmanned Mars missions and/or manned Mars missions? Seems like the quoted timeline is out of date! "The next time Earth laps Mars and they’re side by side is 2016—too soon to do anything. But when it happens again in the summer of 2018, don’t be surprised if a vehicle with a SpaceX logo on it touches down on Mars. Musk has thrown out a rough prediction of 2025 or 2027 for the Neil Armstrong of Mars to take that famous first step onto the planet." Also curious to see how this bet pans out: "I ended up in a strong disagreement with someone about this timeline, and now I have an upsettingly big bet on the line that a human will set foot on Mars before January 1, 2031."

Comment on On Tesla: Open Letter Proposal For Your Consideration by Taylor Marks      Cache   Translate Page
Terrible proposal. Getting governments involved would be a massive mistake. Every anti-EV organization on the planet - from shorts to the oil industry to the ICE manufacturers - would point at it and say it was proof that EVs can't make fiscal sense. Elon's other highly successful company, SpaceX, has publicly talked about how involving the government and accepting financial support from them was a massive mistake in the past and that they don't intend to do it in the future. Government funding always comes with political strings attached. An example of an obvious issue - any government will be incentivized to turn this into a jobs program. Reducing man-hours per output isn't desirable for the government. Just look at the Space Launch System - it's a lousy rocket being funded by the US government, and part of the requirements is it has to involve people in every US state. So instead of the rocket costing $50-100M to launch the way a comparable SpaceX rocket does, it costs $2B to launch, because they have 20x people involved in the project. It's like road work in the US. It never freaking ends - you just see dozens of people standing around doing nothing for months or years on a project that only requires 20% as many people a few weeks. Why? It, like anything else involving government funding, is a jobs program. Government and efficiency are absolute opposites. If you want the maximum number of EVs built, tell the governments to just get out of Tesla's way. Remove stupid laws keeping Tesla from building stores/service centers/superchargers/factories. And don't make it Tesla specific - get out of everyone's way.

James Murdoch Slated To Replace Elon Musk As Tesla Chairman      Cache   Translate Page

Media mogul James Murdoch is at the top of the list to replace Elon Musk as the chairman of Tesla, according to the Financial Times, citing two people briefed on the discussions. Murdoch has reportedly signaled that he wants the job.

Mr Musk agreed to leave the chairman’s post to settle a Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit alleging he broke securities laws in August when he wrote on Twitter that he had “funding secured” to take Tesla private. He will remain chief executive.

Two people briefed on the discussions said Mr Murdoch, who is currently a non-executive director of Tesla, was the lead candidate for the job, which is required by the SEC to be an independent chairman. Another person said external options were still being considered. -FT

Musk, on the other hand, favors Tesla's lead independent director, Antonio Gracias, for the role - however Musk has been told that Gracias may not be sufficiently independent due to his history of long-term involvement with SpaceX.

Gracias's firm, Valor Equity Partners, invested in Tesla in 2005 - selling its IPO shares in 2010. He is currently an investor in SpaceX.

Murdoch will step down as CEO of 21st Century Fox following the media group's sale of entertainment assets to Walt Disney, and is considering setting up a technology investment fund. Murdoch previously stepped down as chairman of Sky following its acquisition by Comcast.

"The Tesla chairman job is perfect for James," said one person briefed on the conversations. "He’s working on this fund and will be sitting next to Elon . . . he’s going to get access to so much deal flow."

Murdoch recently spoke highly of Musk at a recent Goldman Sachs conference.

"It’s been a really fascinating experience," said Murdoch, adding. "What’s exciting about the company and about Elon is the goals are so audacious. He’s an entrepreneur who has some really audacious goals about what can be created and what can be settled for."

Mr Murdoch, who is a friend of Mr Musk, joined Tesla’s board last year as one of two new independent directors brought in to strengthen a group that has frequently been criticised for bowing to Mr Musk’s wishes. However, the appointments have had no effect on the mercurial Mr Musk this year, and Mr Murdoch has participated in recent decisions that have brought the board additional criticism. -FT

The Tesla board has yet to come to a decision on Musk's replacement and may also turn to an external candidate. Musk has until mid-November to find a replacement after having agreed to a 45-day window to step down as part of the settlement agreement with the SEC. That said, the enforcement agency will extend the deadline upon request.

Key paragraph: SpaceX recently began seriously attempting to recover Falcon 9 payload fairings, albeit almost exclusively during West Coast launches in order to let Mr. Steven attempt to catch the parasailing halves in the Pacific Ocean. Thus far, SpaceX engineers and technicians have not yet solved the challenging problems, although fairing halves have reportedly landed as few as
